- 0:28super foods and cleansing to sort of help reach people or
- 0:31help people reach their optimum level of health. So Dr. Josh
- 0:36Axe, welcome to the show. Thanks for being here.
- 0:38Dr. Josh Axe: Excited to be here.
- 0:39Host: What do you think are some of the the most dangerous trends
- 0:43that you're seeing in health, particularly as business people,
- 0:47that we might have to be aware of?
- 0:49Dr. Josh Axe: Sure, well, you know, there are a lot of a lot
- 0:51of both good trends and bad trends out there. I would say
- 0:55when it comes to sort of bad trends, you know, a lot of these
- 0:59things have happened for a long period of time, and that's just
- 1:02sort of sitting at your desk all day long. And the other thing
- 1:06would be, obviously, just poor diet choices. And I would say
- 1:09one that one of the things that would goes along with that is a
- 1:12lot of these energy shots today. You know, I think a lot of times
- 1:16we think, okay, I want that quick fix. I want that little
- 1:19boost of energy. And so even things like five hour energy
- 1:22today, and there's things much, much worse than that. But you
- 1:25know, whether you're stopping in a gas station or a convenience
- 1:28store just going to your regular restaurant, they have these
- 1:31little things everywhere. And you know, doing these large
- 1:35amounts of especially, I know coffee too, over the past 20
- 1:39years, has become the meeting place for so many business you
- 1:43know, small business meetings and things along those lines.
- 1:46But you know all of that excess caffeine and all of the
- 1:49stimulants over time, your body becomes dependent upon them, and
- 1:54it really isn't, isn't good for your body. So on the flip end of
- 1:57that, I think eating a diet that's higher in especially
- 2:01vegetable juices. And so for me, I one of the things I've taught
- 2:04my patients for years is, hey, let's not overdo the coffee. Not
- 2:08that a cup of coffee a day for most people in the morning isn't
- 2:11going to be a big issue. In fact, I think it's. It can be
- 2:14healthy and fine for some people, but, you know, I get the
- 2:16same buzz, and even a different type of buzz, and improved
- 2:20health benefits from doing vegetable juice. And the great
- 2:23thing about vegetable juices is they sell these Now oftentimes
- 2:26where they do a process called Cold pressurization instead of
- 2:32pasteurization, which is better. And so you can pick these up at
- 2:35Whole Foods. Even sometimes, Starbucks will have some of
- 2:37these juices. You know, I think that that's actually a great
- 2:41option, is to do some veggie juice, because veggie juice is
- 2:44getting like a high, concentrated dose of fruits and
- 2:48vegetables. Actually. In fact, one glass of veggie juice can be
- 2:50the equivalent of eating five to six servings, at least, of
- 2:54vegetables. And so it is kind of like a day's worth of vegetables
- 2:58in one single glass. A lot of these naked juices and odwalia
- 3:01juices. The problem is, is that it's pure fruit juice, and
- 3:05sometimes they're even putting fruit juice concentrates in
- 3:08there. And so the great thing about vegetable juice is that
- 3:10it's going to be much lower in sugar, much higher in nutrients.
- 3:14And, you know, and not to say that a little bit of sugar, that
- 3:17there's no issue with a little bit of sugar, if you're getting
- 3:19some sugar from carrots and beets and a veggie juice, or
- 3:22even a little bit of grapefruit juice or lemons or things like
- 3:26that. A little bit of sugar isn't that bad. But the problem
- 3:28with most of these, again, the naked juices, is they're pretty
- 3:31much pure fruit juice and just really a lot of sugar.
- 3:36Host: So talk to me about the five hour energy shots.
- 3:38Dr. Josh Axe: Now, there are things worse than five hour
- 3:41energy, in fact, when we first all of these energy drinks got
- 3:44in the market, I've written several articles on especially
- 3:47things like Red Bull, and there were other ones out there that I
- 3:51think were even they were even pulled off the market because of
- 3:54it was causing heart issues in people. In fact, some people
- 3:57were having heart failure and heart issues from drinking all
- 4:01of these energy drinks, five hour energy came along. They've
- 4:04done a great job. The good thing about them is they do have
- 4:08better ingredients in theirs, which I think is a bonus. But
- 4:11still, a lot of these things are stimulants, and it depends on
- 4:15the person as well. For some people, if somebody is getting
- 4:18plenty of rest, somebody has a personality that's very calm and
- 4:23that's their natural state, they may actually do better with a
- 4:26five hour energy and not have as many long term issues. But
- 4:30again, even if it's natural, doing stimulants, relying on a
- 4:33stimulant for your body all of the time typically isn't the
- 4:37best. But I would say, if somebody has an issue, let's
- 4:40say, like adrenal fatigue, caffeine and stimulants can
- 4:44actually really wear on your adrenal glands over time and
- 4:47again. This isn't for everybody. That's what's kind of hard about
- 4:50answering questions sometimes, is five hour energy. For some
- 4:53people, their bodies might do fine with it, and for other
- 4:56people, long term, it's really going to cause some potential
- 4:59issues. Use, especially with the adrenal glands, kidneys and
- 5:03those types of things.
- 5:04Host: So veggie juice, though, that's the that's the safe play.
- 5:07Dr. Josh Axe: It's the safe play. You know, people use it.
- 5:09And you know, everything from Gershon therapy and the
- 5:12treatment of cancer to naturally boosting energy to cleansing to
- 5:15detox. In fact, if somebody is looking for an energy boost, the
- 5:19ultimate vegetable is beets beet juice. They're actually studies
- 5:22now on triathletes and on athletes and increasing their
- 5:27endurance time, their stamina, their overall strength. It
- 5:30actually contains something in it called nitric oxide. I think
- 5:33this is interesting that many of us are aware of Lance Armstrong
- 5:36and being banned from cycling and and a lot of professional
- 5:40cyclists today, including what Lance Armstrong was busted for,
- 5:44is got busted for something called blood doping, and that's
- 5:46where he's actually oxygenating his red blood cells. And the
- 5:51amazing thing is, is if you're consuming beet juice, you're not
- 5:54doing it to the degree they were doing it, but you're doing it in
- 5:56a completely natural and healthy way. In fact, beet juice
- 5:59increase nitric oxide naturally in your body. So it's great for
- 6:03people for improving their heart health, but it is incredible for
- 6:07naturally increasing your stamina, energy and endurance.
- 6:09And so again, if you want a natural energy boost, beetroot
- 6:13juice or beet juice is is fantastic.
- 6:16Host: So what do you think are some other misconceptions, like
- 6:19foods that people have where you go, Hey, I think I'm eating
- 6:22healthy, but really, as it turns out, it's I'm not eating healthy
- 6:25at all.
- 6:26Dr. Josh Axe: Yeah, well, I actually have an article on my
- 6:28on my health website, that really gets into the health
- 6:32foods that people think are healthy and that really aren't
- 6:36healthy at all. And so all I can go ahead and walk everybody
- 6:40through what some of these, what some of these foods are. But for
- 6:43starters, you know, one of the biggest ones, and I kind of
- 6:45mentioned this earlier, but there's no doubt, the fruit
- 6:47juice. So many people think it's healthy. It's it's definitely
- 6:50not. It's just it's so much concentrated sugar. Now, eating
- 6:53fruit by itself, or eating fruit in a smoothie, fine, when you go
- 6:57to the grocery store, we're buying pasteurized orange juice
- 7:00or or, you know, or the kids apple juice. Now, if you're
- 7:03actually doing fresh pressed juice from fruits, some people
- 7:07are going to do great with that. Other people it may be too much
- 7:10sugar, but if that's really the only extra sugar you're getting
- 7:13during the day, it's not going to be issues. If you just got
- 7:16done with a really hard workout, or you're about to work out,
- 7:19it's not going to be an issue either, because your body is
- 7:21going to burn up all of that sugar. So again, doing fruit
- 7:24juice around the workout, not as much of an issue, either. But
- 7:27let's say somebody has sensitive blood sugar, of course, a
- 7:29diabetic, or just your average person today, who's even just a
- 7:32few pounds overweight. In that case, no doing fruit juice, even
- 7:36fresh, fresh pressed juice. Now, again, it's different. If it's
- 7:40okay, you've got quite a few vegetables in there as well. And
- 7:44then you're doing like you're juicing one apple as part of
- 7:47your juice mixture. Again, not really much of an issue there as
- 7:50well. I think that's completely fine for just about everybody,
- 7:53unless, again, somebody is in a semi diabetic or diabetic state.
- 7:57But yeah, again, it really, it really depends on the person.
- 8:00But just to give you an example, if you are doing a big, let's
- 8:03say a 20 ounce, a big thing, and it's almost mostly juice, you're
- 8:07getting probably 60 to 70 grams of sugar in a 32 I think about
- 8:12that, a 16 ounce soda. You know, there's typically 40 grams of
- 8:14sugar when fruit juice, it's pretty close. I mean, you're
- 8:17going to have 60 to probably almost 80 grams of sugar. Well,
- 8:20it just depends. But either way, it's a lot of sugar in one
- 8:24sitting, without any fiber, and so it's just something to be
- 8:27conscious of. And again, if you're working out your your
- 8:30body will burn it up. And in that case, it's probably not a
- 8:32concern.
- 8:33Host: Wow.
- 8:33Dr. Josh Axe: Yeah, well, I have a whole, a whole thing here, of
- 8:36several things, and we don't have to spend a lot of times on
- 8:38these, but one of the things that surprises some people is
- 8:40there is a lot of farm fish today, and especially if
- 8:44anybody's buying tilapia or just regular salmon, most a lot of it
- 8:47is farm now. Again, if it says wild caught, well, great. It's
- 8:50wild caught. That fish is fantastic for fruit, for your
- 8:54health. But you know, a lot of these farm fish today, they
- 8:57contain what are called PCBs. They also contain dioxins and
- 9:02these are toxins that shouldn't be in there. And also, you know,
- 9:06one of the things that salmon is touted for is it's omega three
- 9:09fatty acids, and it's a specific ratio of omega three to omega
- 9:13six fats. And omega three fats are anti inflammatory, and most,
- 9:17almost everybody, has heard of omega three fats at this point,
- 9:20and they're great for your health. But if a if a fish has
- 9:24been farmed, it's omega three fats are typically 10 times
- 9:27lower than in wild caught fish. And so you know, if somebody is
- 9:31buying fish, wild caught is 10 times superior nutrients
- 9:36oftentimes, or at least an Omega three fat ratio, and then
- 9:39oftentimes, and then also it's completely free of toxin. So
- 9:42that's a much better option as well. And I would say, just a
- 9:44few other foods to consider and keep out of your diet. Another
- 9:48big one is canola oil. Many people think canola oil is
- 9:50healthy. The problem is, 90% of canola oil today is either it's
- 9:55genetically modified and it's partially hydrogenated so in
- 9:59most cases. It's just as bad as any other vegetable oil. And
- 10:03then I would say artificial sweeteners. This is something a
- 10:05lot of people are still using. It surprises me, even in the
- 10:08business world, and they think, Oh, I'm gonna do, you know, a
- 10:11Coke Zero, or some sort of diet soda. And you know, Splenda
- 10:16breaks down into chlorine in the body, and those high levels of
- 10:19chlorine basically suffocate your cells. They lead to other
- 10:22illnesses over time, and they actually one of the biggest
- 10:25problems is artificial sweeteners, whether it be
- 10:28aspartame or splendor, also known as sucralose, is they kill
- 10:32off probiotics in your gut. And that's one of the big thing, and
- 10:36there's actually several studies on this, is that they kill off
- 10:39that good gut flora, which 80% of your immune system is located
- 10:44in your gut. So if you're consuming artificial sweeteners,
- 10:47it can decrease nutrient absorption. It can cause a
- 10:51condition called leaky gut over time, even increasing your risk
- 10:53of allergies, food sensitivities, other health
- 10:57issues and so again, artificial sweeteners is probably one of
- 11:01those other things I still see a lot of people doing, but it's
- 11:04definitely pretty, pretty destructive to everyone's
- 11:07health.
- 11:08Host: You know, one of the other things that I always wonder
- 11:09about is Caesar salad. You know, it's like...
- 11:12Dr. Josh Axe: Well, it depends. You know, of course, romaine
- 11:14lettuce is a great bitter lettuce. It's good for your good
- 11:17for your liver, your gallbladder and some of your other organs.
- 11:20But, yeah, the problem is, is some of these salads today have
- 11:23more dressing than they do lettuce and vegetables, and so,
- 11:27you know, if you're doing, let's say you're doing a small amount,
- 11:30let's say a tablespoon of a natural Caesar that's made with,
- 11:34let's say cashews or macadamia or something like that. Let's
- 11:39say more of a natural substance, you know, a vegan based recipe.
- 11:43I think that's okay, you know, to do a couple tablespoons of
- 11:47that. But yeah, traditional Caesar today is loaded with
- 11:51soybean oil. And we know soy is a major issue today in terms of
- 11:55increasing estrogen in men, increasing the risk of cancer in
- 11:58women. And so they have what are called phytoestrogens. So again,
- 12:01most of them have soybean oil and cotton seed oil, which are
- 12:04it's a genetically modified oil, really high in calories as well.
- 12:08But again, the other, the bigger issue is that it's a
- 12:10hydrogenated oil. And so yeah, I agree with you most. If you're
- 12:14going to just go to a regular restaurant and buy a regular
- 12:17Caesar salad, it is not good for your health. It's yeah, and I
- 12:21think, you know, a great replacement is doing, you know,
- 12:24olive oil and balsamic vinegar or something along those lines,
- 12:28or even buying a natural in fact, there, if you go to a
- 12:30place like Whole Foods, if that's in your area, you can
- 12:32probably find a more natural Caesar. And you still want to
- 12:35use that in moderation, but that's, that's at least a better
- 12:38option.
- 12:39Host: So I want to talk about some stress level stuff. What
- 12:42are some things we can do to kind of manage the stress level
- 12:45a little bit?
- 12:46Dr. Josh Axe: You know, for stress, here's what I think a
- 12:50lot of people don't realize, is that, and I know that you do
- 12:53realize this, but stress is healthy if it's taken in doses.
- 12:57You know, I my wife and I work out all the time, and but we
- 13:02always take at least one day a week off, and typically two. And
- 13:06the reason is, is when we work out, we work out hard, it's when
- 13:09we don't schedule in times of rest that you're gonna have an
- 13:12issue. And so again, you can work as hard. I mean, in most
- 13:15cases, you can work really, really hard, be into things, and
- 13:18give it your all, but you have to take at least one day a week
- 13:22off, and you at least in you have to schedule things
- 13:24throughout your day that get your mind off things and allow
- 13:27your body to rest. And so you know your mind, in a way, is a
- 13:30muscle. It has to work if you never rest it. It's just like,
- 13:34you know if you're trying to work your you know your biceps
- 13:39over time, if you give it too much of a load, day after day
- 13:43after day, you're left in these heavy dumbbells, eventually
- 13:45you're going to tear it, you're going to injure it. And the same
- 13:47thing can happen with our with our with our minds and our
- 13:50emotions if we overdo it. And so one of the things I've had my
- 13:53patients do over the years is get out a sheet of paper, have
- 13:55them write down on the left side everything that is stressing
- 13:58them out, and their work hours and kind of all, you know, we
- 14:01kind of brainstorm and write out all those things on the right
- 14:04shot side of the sheet of paper. I have them write down all of
- 14:07the things they love to do, things that bring them joy,
- 14:10things that help take their mind off, things and and whether that
- 14:14be going for a walk or going to the mall or watching a movie by
- 14:18themselves, whatever it is, we kind of write down all those
- 14:22things that they love to do. And so we go down the left side, and
- 14:25we start figuring out, okay, how do we better deal with this
- 14:28situation? What can you get out of your life? Because a lot of
- 14:31times we have too many things we're doing, and what things
- 14:34that you can say no to? And then on the right side, we start
- 14:36scheduling those things in, because a lot of us have a work
- 14:39schedule. We have scheduled in to bring kids to soccer
- 14:42practice, or whatever it is. You really need to schedule in times
- 14:46of rest, times of joy, you know, in times to live life and and I
- 14:52see this in a lot of people, in business professionals, this is
- 14:54something where I understand, I'm type A, I will go out there
- 14:58and I, I'll put in an 80 hour week. Week or I would if I
- 15:01didn't have scheduled in times of rest. And understanding this,
- 15:04in fact, there's a great book that really hits on this topic.
- 15:07It's called the powerful engagement. It's a it's a great
- 15:10business book that everyone might enjoy. But they really
- 15:12talk about this, and they actually have done studies on
- 15:15business executives, and they found they were much more
- 15:17effective when they schedule it in times of rest, and that might
- 15:21look like you once a day, taking a 30 minute walk in the
- 15:23afternoon and kind of letting your brain recharge and get
- 15:27refreshed. Even something as simple as that makes a big
- 15:29difference. Even, you know, taking your time and working out
- 15:32in the middle of the day, even if it's just 30 minutes that it
- 15:35allows to reset your brain. In fact, in the book, they really
- 15:38talk about it takes 20 minutes of not thinking about and
- 15:41concentrating on something for your brain to reset. And if you
- 15:43can take 20 to 30 minutes completely away from thinking
- 15:47and being engaged, it really allows your body to sort of
- 15:50reset there. So anyways, I think in terms of stress, you know,
- 15:54that's an important thing to consider, and I talked about the
- 15:56business side, it's a similar thing, though, with parents,
- 15:58whether you're a business exec you're not. I know a lot of moms
- 16:01out there, sure, they're with kids all day, and they probably
- 16:05get zero alone time in an average week. And so one of the
- 16:09things I work with those moms are doing is getting three hours
- 16:13by themselves a week, and so they can walk through the mall
- 16:16or do lunch with the best friend or whatever it might be. But
- 16:18this is really, I think it's important for everyone to try
- 16:21and do you know, I know everyone has a different spiritual
- 16:23beliefs, but this is a, this is something, you know, taking a
- 16:26Sabbath or a day off. Just gonna say that from from the beginning
- 16:29of time. And if you look in other cultures, both in Asian
- 16:32culture, European culture, there is a very long time in the
- 16:36middle of day where people are resting. So, you know, in
- 16:39Europe, lunch is definitely longer, typically an hour and a
- 16:41half to two hours, in some cases, in Asia, again, it's, you
- 16:45know, there's times for tea and those sort of things in the
- 16:49middle of the day. And so a lot of times, I know business execs
- 16:51in the US are working from 6am to 10pm I mean, that's that can
- 16:59be common.
- 17:00Host: Well there is a lot here, as you can tell my friends.
- 17:03We're a fan of your mission, so you're doing a good thing. So
- 17:06keep at it, my friend.
- 17:07Dr. Josh Axe: Thanks for having me. I love your podcast. Love
- 17:10your mission, what you're doing, and I just really appreciate you
- 17:12having me on your show.
