Latest / Northman Coaching / Overcoming Wrath: Love, Not Revenge
Transcript
- Gary: This passage tells us not to harbor hatred toward another person. It calls us to address wrongdoing, then forbids revenge and bearing a grudge. It commands us to love our neighbor as ourselves. Notice how these instructions belong together. You can confront a wrong without cultivating hatred. You can speak honestly without planning payback. But wrath makes that fucking difficult. Sometimes it comes out through shouting. Sometimes it stays quiet. You replay the argument, you collect examples of their failures. You imagine the moment. They finally suffer enough to understand what they put you through. And you call it justice. But ask yourself, what outcome am I actually seeking? Do you want the harm to stop? Do you want responsibility and repair? Or would their pain satisfy you even if nothing improved? That's a hard question. It's also where free thinking begins.
