- 0:00The Shadow Dossier. Act I. The Woman Who Walked
- 0:06In. In November 1945, an American woman named
- 0:13Elizabeth Bentley walked into an FBI field office
- 0:16and began describing, in exhaustive detail, a
- 0:21network of Soviet intelligence sources that reached
- 0:24deep into the United States government. She was
- 0:27not a defector from a foreign country. She was
- 0:30an American, a former Vassar graduate, and until
- 0:34recently, one of the network's own couriers.
- 0:39Bentley had drifted toward communism in the 1930s
- 0:44and through a relationship with a Soviet intelligence
- 0:47handler named Jacob Golos. became a courier moving
- 0:51documents and information between Soviet contacts
- 0:54and their sources inside Washington agencies,
- 0:58including the Treasury Department, the Office
- 1:01of Strategic Services, and other wartime offices.
- 1:05When Golos died in 1943, Bentley effectively
- 1:09inherited parts of his network. By 1945, Bentley
- 1:22had grown afraid of Soviet handlers who she believed
- 1:25distrusted her, and of the FBI closing in. She
- 1:29chose to come forward voluntarily, and over months
- 1:33of debriefing, she named more than 80 individuals
- 1:37she said had passed information to Soviet intelligence
- 1:40through her network, including a Treasury Department
- 1:43official named Nathan Gregory Silvermaster. who
- 1:47ran a separate ring of sources and a Justice
- 1:50Department official named William Remington.
- 1:56Her allegations were explosive and, at the time,
- 2:01nearly impossible to prosecute. Much of what
- 2:04she offered was her own testimony about conversations
- 2:08and deliveries, without the kind of corroborating
- 2:11physical evidence that a courtroom demanded.
- 2:14Several of the people she named were investigated,
- 2:17called before congressional committees, and in
- 2:20some cases lost their government careers, but
- 2:23very few were ever criminally convicted based
- 2:26on her testimony alone. Act 3. The press called
- 2:32her the Red Spy Queen. Bentley testified publicly
- 2:39before Congress in 1948, the same year Whitaker
- 2:43Chambers made his own allegations against Alger
- 2:45Hiss, and newspapers gave her a lurid nickname
- 2:49that stuck for the rest of her life, the Red
- 2:52Spy Queen. It was a title that flattened a complicated,
- 2:56frightened informant into a tabloid character,
- 2:59and it shaped how seriously, or unseriously,
- 3:03many people took her claims for years afterward.
- 3:09Soviet intelligence, for its part, took her defection
- 3:13with total seriousness. Internal Soviet cables
- 3:17later revealed that Bentley's decision to go
- 3:20to the FBI forced Moscow to shut down or bury
- 3:24nearly every network she had touched. A mass
- 3:28retreat of Soviet intelligence assets across
- 3:31the American government carried out almost overnight
- 3:34once her cooperation became known through their
- 3:37own sources inside Washington. For decades, Bentley's
- 3:49specific individual accusations remained largely
- 3:52unverifiable. treated by skeptics as the overheated
- 3:57claims of an unstable and possibly self -serving
- 4:01witness. That changed with the declassification
- 4:04of the Venona program's deciphered Soviet cables
- 4:08beginning in 1995. Venona corroborated the substance
- 4:13of her account to a remarkable degree. confirming
- 4:16that Silvermaster's ring existed largely as she
- 4:20described it, and that a striking number of the
- 4:22people she named did, according to Soviet intelligence's
- 4:26own internal communications, in fact provide
- 4:30material to Moscow. Elizabeth Bentley died in
- 4:371963, having spent her later years testifying
- 4:41periodically teaching, and living with a reputation
- 4:44that outside intelligence circles remained largely
- 4:48a punchline. It took the Soviet Union's own archives
- 4:52and America's own broken ciphers, both opened
- 4:55up long after her death, to establish that the
- 4:58Red Spy Queen had, in her own uneven and self
- 5:03-interested way, been telling the government
- 5:05something largely true. This concludes declassified
