- 0:07The second 1959 Major League Baseball All-Star game took place at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Monday, August 3rd, 1959.
- 0:16This was the first year that the MLB would play two All-Star games during the summer, a tradition that would only last for four years.
- 0:22This was also the first mid-summer classic held on the West Coast.
- 0:26The American League was managed by the Yankees' Casey Stengel. The Yankees had won the World Series over the Braves in 1958,
- 0:33and this game would mark Casey's eighth All-Star game that he managed in the past 11 years.
- 0:38The starting lineup featured five future Hall of Famers, Yogi Berra, Nelly Fox, Luis Aparichio, Mickey Mannell, and Ted Williams.
- 0:46The National League was managed by the Braves' Fred Haney. Milwaukee had won the World Series in 1957 and the NL Pennant in 1958,
- 0:54making this the second year in the row that Haney would lead the National League stars.
- 0:58Their starting lineup would also include five future Hall of Famers, Stan Musial, Ernie Banks, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Don Drysdale on the mound.
- 1:07This audio recording is from the NBC Radio broadcast featuring announcers Bob Neal and Russ Hodges.
- 1:13Well, there's great crowd in the Los Angeles Coliseum that probably is around 50,000 at the moment. Mark is now, as the players go back to their dugouts,
- 1:25Drysdale continues to warm up off to the right, Jerry Walker continues to warm up to the left.
- 1:27The umpires are coming up, and very shortly now, this 1959 Second All-Star game will be underway.
- 1:35First let's pause, 10 seconds for station identification.
- 1:47WGY, WGFM's connected.
- 1:54The umpires now have moved after the plate. Working back of the plate today, calling balls and strikes in the National League will be Bill Jokowski.
- 2:01Charlie Barry of the American League will be at first base. Tony Benzon of the National League will be out at second.
- 2:07Bill Summers of the American League will be at third.
- 2:10Down the right field foul line will see National League will be Ken Burkhart, and representing the American League down the left field foul line will be Hank Starr.
- 2:19So as manager Fred Haney meets out there with the umpires and awaiting the arrival of manager Casey Sangle of the New York Yankees,
- 2:27and as the whole general atmosphere of baseball now centers on home plate as Casey Sangle moves out to discuss,
- 2:34along with the umpires, just a brief review of the ground rules which they discussed rather carefully before the game.
- 2:41It is my pleasure now to turn you over to the gentleman who will take you along in the first half of this ball game.
- 2:46I'm broadcast to the voice of the San Francisco Giants, Fred Podgett.
- 2:51Thank you Bob Neal, you did a wonderful job of setting the stage and explaining the rather complicated ground rules set up.
- 2:58We'll get busy right now with the starting lineups.
- 3:01Undoubtedly both managers will let this great crowd of Los Angeles see most of the stars of the afternoon goes on,
- 3:07but this is the way they will start the game.
- 3:10For the American League team in the visiting gray, the National League team, the home team here,
- 3:16playing at first base from the Boston Red Sox, Pete Reynolds.
- 3:21At second base, Little Nelly Fox of the Chicago White Sox hitting in the number two spot,
- 3:26and starting in left field, and he drew at big innovation as we've ever heard here, Ted Williams, behind the plate,
- 3:34Yogi Berra hitting in the number four spot from the New York Yankees,
- 3:39in center field, Mickey Matel hitting five, in right field, a youngster and a great ball player, Roger Maris from Kansas City.
- 3:49Over at the third base spot, Frank Malzone from the Boston Red Sox.
- 3:55At shortstop and for a while today a lot of folks thought that this kid might be the bad boy,
- 4:01so small is Louis Apparecio of the Chicago White Sox, and what a glove man he is and a good hitter.
- 4:07And the lucky right hander, Jerry Walker, who has won eight and lost five on the season with a fine earned run average of 2.63,
- 4:16from the Baltimore Orioles will be the starting pitcher.
- 4:20For the nice to league all-stars at second base from Cincinnati, Johnny Temple.
- 4:26At third base from the St. Louis Kignal, Ken Boyer.
- 4:30In right field, baseball's leading average hitter, Hank Aaron from Milwaukee.
- 4:37In center field, the Giants great center fielders from San Francisco, Willie Mays.
- 4:41At shortstop, Ernie Banks from the Chicago Cup.
- 4:47Starting at first base and he got a wonderful ovation to Stam Museum.
- 4:52From the Kignal, in left field, Wally Moon from the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 4:58Atcher, Del Crandall from the Milwaukee Braves.
- 5:02And Don Drysdale, whose overall record on the season is 14 wins and 6 defeats goes to the Hill.
- 5:10And the nice to league all-stars take the field wearing their own whole uniform.
- 5:14Basically white, but at third base, Boyer will wear the Cardinal Red sweatshirt at shortstop Banks with the blue sweatshirt and cap.
- 5:24And the center with the white uniform, the orange and black insignia of the Giants.
- 5:29And flowing around as each player can be identified easily by his own peculiar mannerisms of the colors that the two teams wear.
- 5:38So we're about ready for the first pitch of the second All-Star Game of 1959.
- 5:44And it's a big thrill. And the fans of Los Angeles have responded in a wonderful style, as Bob Neal told you, a crowd of approximately 50,000.
- 5:52And of course, here in Los Angeles, we have quite a bit of sunshine and heat blistering down, although there is a breeze blowing.
- 5:58Quite a good one, in fact. And it's blowing out straight towards center field to those cavernous top field reaches where you've really got to tag the ball.
- 6:07Here we call the great pitching of Drysdale in the first All-Star Game on the Fifth Hitler's Wall.
- 6:13And Don is out there to try to do that again this afternoon, as he will face the leadoff batter
- 6:20of the Boston Red Sox, leading off with the American League All-Star.
- 6:24Pete Reynolds, the left-hander, Pete, can slap that ball to any field, and he is batting 3-15.
- 6:30A tough man to keep off the base. Here's the first pitch. Drysdale fires a strike call over the outside corner.
- 6:39Bill Jocowski going with the right hand. One strike is the count.
- 6:43Drysdale into the wind up again. Let's up and is low with ball one. One ball and one strike.
- 6:53Comparatively shallow outfield alignment. That very close left field screen has Wallymoon playing well toward left center.
- 7:01Don Drysdale winds and throws again. There's a swing on this strike too.
- 7:10Reynolds, as Bob Neil reminds me, is a fellow that hits the left field a lot, takes a lot of the pitch,
- 7:16and can whip it over there into left field, plays second and first,
- 7:21backed at one time, plays some shortstop for the Washington Club.
- 7:25The count is one ball and two strikes. Drysdale fires. There's a swing and a strike.
- 7:31Pete Reynolds goes down on strike.
- 7:35Drysdale hits the inside corner with a blast ball that really had a whiskered on it.
- 7:40The matter coming up now is Nellie Fox. He's up there now, one of the most colorful that you'll ever see.
- 7:47Nellie a veteran of these all-star games. One of those fellows that never seems to take the big cut at the baseball,
- 7:55but every once in a while he muscles up and he'll pound one out of the lot.
- 7:59Just a bit. A left-hander against Drysdale. John lets up and is inside with ball one.
- 8:06One ball and no strikes with one down, the base is empty.
- 8:10The bumper of Ted Williams is off to our left, swinging a couple of clubs around.
- 8:14A real sentimental choice for this game. Drysdale fires again. Here's a swing and a foul strike back to the screen.
- 8:23Count is one and one. Bill Joukowski calling balls and strikes. We have the six umpires today with umpires manning the left and right field foul line.
- 8:35Drysdale throwing one and one to Fox. Mrs. Outside ball two.
- 8:41Count is two and one. Drysdale's very seldom comes overhand. It's mostly a three-quarter delivery and an occasional one that comes in by way of third base.
- 8:52A virtual crossfire. The young right-hander is ready. The count is two and one. He throws.
- 8:57Here's a swing and a foul strike to the left going back into the state. Count two balls and two strikes.
- 9:06There's plenty of room to chase foul flies down the left field line, particularly for the third basements.
- 9:13Down the right field line, the stands get out very quickly.
- 9:18Count even up on number two, Nellie Fox, is two and two. Here's Drysdale picking. Here's a pop foul out of play again on the count holding.
- 9:26And two balls and two strikes. This is really a shirt sleeve crowd today.
- 9:32Plenty of colors, not a cloud in the sky. A beautiful picture for America's national fat time.
- 9:42Drysdale shakes off a sign from Crandall and Nellie Fox decides to back out now with one down on the base of empty, top of the first inning and no score.
- 9:51A Dodger right-hander fires. Here's a swing and a flat foul to the left side out of play. That one didn't miss the screen very far.
- 9:58The count holds with two balls and two strikes.
- 10:04One player missing today from the Naisal League team, Orlando Cepeda, who bruised his wrist Friday, re-injured excitedly, sat out Sunday and it was decided that they should stay at home and take additional treatment.
- 10:19A two and two pitch, outside ball three. Drysdale attempts at a curve that failed to get the corner and the count goes to three balls and two strikes.
- 10:29John is having a fabulous year for the Los Angeles Dodgers. One of the prime reasons why they're a real contender.
- 10:37Now the count is three and two to Nellie Fox. Drysdale fires. Fox takes wide. It's ball four.
- 10:43So Nellie Fox walks because the first base runner of the second All-Star game was 1959 and the batter will be the sumbered Ted Williams.
- 10:53And we wonder if Ted is going to try to rise to the challenge of the sensitive right field screen.
- 10:59It takes a big poke to get over there, but Ted has the type of power that when he hits him, they'll go out of any part.
- 11:06May switches into right center. Aaron down the line. Drysdale throws. Williams takes a strike call.
- 11:13Fastball over the outside corner. Wally Moon is playing at least 150 feet away from the left field line, giving Williams all of that left field screen if he wants to swing there.
- 11:24Big Ted Wedding, adding two cruddy roaches to swing and a ground ball down the first base line, taking the museum.
- 11:32He's been thrown into Johnny Temple. Williams is out. Moving to second base on the play is Nellie Fox.
- 11:39That's way going from Sam Mewsfield to Johnny Temple. Here is Yogi Berra, the Yankees' great star for Lowe's Ready Here.
- 11:52Yogi steps in with a season's batting average of $292. A real veteran of All-Star play, a left handed batter.
- 12:02Nellie Fox at second base. Drysdale studying him now. Two down the runner-off. Here's the pitch for Drysdale and here's a swing and a high pop foul out of play. Strike one.
- 12:22Two men down on the top of the first inning. With Ferro up there now who can punch the ball to any field, Moon, the left fielder, has moved closer to the left field line.
- 12:34May still sheds into right center. Newfield very deep at first base and Aaron down the line and right. Drysdale pump delivers. Strike two call.
- 12:44Why did it get the inside corner of the left handed batter? That is on two.
- 12:55Now Drysdale decides to take a trip to the Rosenberg. In the on-back circle is the Yankees' great all-round player Mickey Meville.
- 13:07Don Drysdale ready. Yogi very awaiting. Here's the pitch to Yogi, ball one. One ball and two strikes the count.
- 13:21Now the count one and two is Drysdale as Ferro down to the two strike count. Don is ready again. The pitch to Yogi.
- 13:31Fast ball wide, ball two and a count of two and two. You know you love this game of baseball but if you had to stand up there against a fellow like Drysdale, particularly as the right handed, you know I think you might lose a little bit of your vets for the game.
- 13:48You never like to see much of the ball. It comes right out of that uniform of his and it comes mighty fast. Ready for the two and two pitch to the left.
- 13:57That's three on the side of the track. Well the Americans leave all the time. On the top of the first inning. No runs, no hits, no errors. One left on.
- 14:07And so at the middle of the first inning the score is nothing to nothing.
- 14:15Now against young Jerry Walker. Johnny Temple standing in, batting 3-28, the great second factor for the Cincinnati Red Leg. Jerry Walker with his record of eight and five. The Livers Temple takes high on him side, ball one.
- 14:30Johnny is a pest. He can get on there in any way at all. He doesn't mind getting nipped by a pitch if it means a ball game.
- 14:37Great knowledge of the strike zone and enough power to get him out of the park. Ball two high on him side as Jerry Walker curves seems to take off a bit.
- 14:48So Temple now looks down to Billy Herman coaching at first base to see what the instructions are on the two and old pitch.
- 14:56The American League All-Star trail the score in the top of the first inning. Johnny Temple is leading off with an actually all-star.
- 15:02Jerry Walker throws two and all. Temple takes strike one, a fast ball on the inside corner. Johnny has not swung the bat so far.
- 15:10Now two balls and one strike.
- 15:13Temple is a kind of a kid that just bought his way on to the ball club.
- 15:19Rated too small for a long time, but they found out that he's had what it takes.
- 15:24He attempts to butt and fouls it off. Strike two. Even up two and two. This is Jerry Walker from Ada, Oklahoma.
- 15:34And he is just a brothel boy, only 20 years old, weighs 190 pounds and stands six feet.
- 15:48Not even up a two and two now.
- 15:54Walker throws.
- 15:55Temple swings a line by, they take the left field, down the grass wing to the screen.
- 16:00Temple is fine for two and he is in there when they stand up double.
- 16:06Jerry Walker, the youngest pitcher ever to pitch in the All-Star game, has Johnny Temple life went over shortstop and as Ted Williams came in,
- 16:15not a tipping the catch, but to make the pick up, the ball took an upward hop over his left shoulder.
- 16:20He did not touch the ball. It is good as a two-way pitch.
- 16:25And now against Jerry Walker, about our Kim Boyer, hitting 3-0-1 during the regular season with a St. Louis Kite.
- 16:34And he supplies a lot of their power and a lot of their runs batted in.
- 16:40He is a definite threat in any part. 18 overs on the season. 65 runs batted in.
- 16:48No score, the nice and weak threatening. Jerry Walker throws, Boyer takes ball one inside.
- 16:55Shot one and all. Johnny Temple on a second.
- 16:59The outfield of Williams, Manel and Merritt in just about a straightaway defense against the right-handed hitting Kim Boyer.
- 17:09Ready for the one and all pitch. Walker throws various ball two too low.
- 17:13Boyer has a good fastball. I rather Walker has a good fastball, but he tried to get over the inside corner,
- 17:19but it was a trifle low on the count. Two balls and no strike.
- 17:29Johnny Temple and Mellie Clark, two of the smallest men on the field exchanging greetings out at second base.
- 17:37Henry Aronson in the on-deck trepels.
- 17:39Walker throws now and Boyer swings, rounds one to the right side.
- 17:43The clock picks up throws the first.
- 17:45Hint time, moving to third base is Johnny Temple.
- 17:48So the nice and weak off-dive has the chance to score first with a runner at third and one down,
- 17:53and Henry Arons stepping up to the plate. What a year he's having and what a ball player he is.
- 18:00There's a hand for the introduction of Aronson. Aaron batting 3-66.
- 18:05With 29 home runs and 87 runs batted in.
- 18:17They're better in the game. The American leg is playing in field back.
- 18:21Not too worried about the possibility of scoring the first run.
- 18:25The pitch not Aaron. Low ball one.
- 18:27Woody Mays will follow. Aaron number 44 in his Milwaukee uniform.
- 18:38The nice league team in the white uniform. The American league in the traveling gray.
- 18:43Temple down the line. The pitch to Aaron.
- 18:45A swing and a high flat on the right field line.
- 18:47Temple tagging up. Coming over quickly as Roger Merritt makes the catch coming across the line.
- 18:51Here's a throw into the plate. Johnny Temple passes.
- 18:54Well, Aaron he scored. And Hulgie was up the line trying to block the plate.
- 19:01And the Temple just fell to him and came on into the score with the ball getting away.
- 19:07So the nice league leads on the sacrifice by Hank Aaron. One to nothing.
- 19:15Now, Fulgis had a lot of success in this policy.
- 19:19Season with the giant, Woody Mays. On the season, not quite up to his usual average, but always a threat.
- 19:27The center field of Woody Mays batting 293. Jerry Walker winds both to Mays.
- 19:33Mays take high on the inside. 4-1. Two down bases empty.
- 19:40Nice to lead one. American league nothing in the bottom of the first inning.
- 19:47Ready for the one and open to River Jerry Walker. Mays swings round to Deuce III.
- 19:51There's a neat pick up a mouthful of the throw across the run. Mays is retired.
- 19:55And so are the nice league all-stars.
- 19:58In the bottom of the first inning. One run. One hit. No errors. Nobody left on.
- 20:03At the end of the inning, the score is nice to lead one. American league nothing.
- 20:09In the top of inning number two in the second all-star game of the season.
- 20:14From the Coliseum of Los Angeles. Leading off will be Mickey Mapp.
- 20:18Mapp will be followed by Roger Merritt and then by Frank Malzone.
- 20:22And the ball is a throw to see this kid step up to the plate in baseball uniforms.
- 20:28Mapp is batting 2-90 on the air. 55 runs batted in and 20 home runs.
- 20:34Getting left handed against Don Drysdale who winds and throws and Mapp will take 4-1.
- 20:41Lower than Mapp.
- 20:45One of the real long range drivers in the history of baseball.
- 20:52Drysdale pitches again to Mapp. That is low for ball team.
- 20:57Two balls, no strikes.
- 21:02With the baseball season now past the 100 game mark.
- 21:06The interest in the national pastime during the months of August and September always is here at the.
- 21:13The 2-0 pitch. A lot of strike call on the inside.
- 21:17Drysdale giving the big motion. Got the inside corner. It's 2-1.
- 21:25The 2-1 wind up. The fast ball a swing on the miss.
- 21:29The amount of foul chips that the ball was held onto by Crandell at a strike two.
- 21:33And a count of two and two. Mapp is leading off in the top of the second.
- 21:38As the nice to lead leads one to nothing.
- 21:41Johnny Temple scoring from third on a sacrifice fly hit down the right field line.
- 21:47Off the bat of Hank Aaron.
- 21:51Two balls, two strikes to shout to wind up but Don Drysdale the pitch.
- 21:55A bump past the mound. Inflictly, Mapp cannot make the play and Mapp will.
- 22:00Goes off his specialty. A two strike one. And he dragged it past Don Drysdale.
- 22:05Nice tried to charge the ball in his second base.
- 22:08Could not come up with it and it is a base hit for Mickey Mato.
- 22:11And the first hit off Drysdale this season and the all-star game competition as he had gone through against the American Lakers.
- 22:19In the first game played in Pittsburgh.
- 22:22Matt and I is right fielder Roger Merritt. Kansas sitting his averages three twenty-six.
- 22:30Roger has fourteen home runs. A left handed hitter.
- 22:34Drysdale goes to first and Mato was almost caught doing the wrong way.
- 22:38As museum tagging high on the shoulder as Mato was sliding back in.
- 22:46A left handed batter Merritt's leading.
- 22:48Drysdale goes to first again. Mato is back. You have to keep Mickey close.
- 22:53And with this big crowd here the incentive to steal is undoubtedly there.
- 22:57He has stolen seventeen times for the Yankees on the field.
- 23:01Museum keeping him close. Drysdale looks over there.
- 23:06Now pitches he doesn't go swing and a miss for Merritt. Strike one.
- 23:13There's so many facets of the game of baseball that are filling and players like these all-stars can do them about all.
- 23:20They can hit the ball out of the lot. They can steal. They can perform the sensational fielding feats.
- 23:25There goes Mato. The ball's one on and missed. It's over the second base.
- 23:29And there's Mato. He's out of space.
- 23:37Roger Merritt's long at the ball. Good catch. Randall's fired a strike to Rony Banks and Mato is out-flighting.
- 23:45So the count now is two strikes on the left handed batter Merritt.
- 23:50Drysdale double checks the count. It is two strikes.
- 23:55Here's Don winding the throw again. This is outside. Ball one. One ball and two strikes.
- 24:04It certainly took a perfect throw by Dale Crannell to get Mickey Mantle and that was right on the button.
- 24:16Now waiting for the one and two pitch. Drysdale sends it in. Outside for ball two and two.
- 24:24Nicely leading one to nothing in the top of the second inning with one out.
- 24:30Mickey Mantle is just thrown out of tension in the stable second.
- 24:36It's a two and two count to Roger Merritt. Drysdale throws a let up to topside ball three.
- 24:44Three balls to strike.
- 24:51Can't get over the size of this crowd. The mistake in horseshoe. The Coliseum in Los Angeles. A wonderful turnout.
- 24:58Three and two pitch. Now swings him into strike three.
- 25:04Drysdale gets him down to three and two count. That's when he reaches back and gets something extra.
- 25:09And he's really ended class ball buzzing today.
- 25:15The third baseman now, Mike Malzone from the Boston Red Sox.
- 25:20Starting 277. Has 64 runs batted in. Tough man at that plate. Drysdale throws two in. There's a long drive for Les Pio and Ritman to make it.
- 25:29And it's up over the swing call. Home run for Malzone.
- 25:34Mike Malzone ties it up.
- 25:46So that ties up the game is one one and Bob I believe that gives you an indication of the way the sentiment goes here today.
- 25:53I believe it's off of a nice delete because it was just a little polite round of applause for Malzone.
- 26:01Here is Roy Abernico the shortstop from Chicago playing for the American League All-Star betting 273.
- 26:10High on inside ball one.
- 26:17The drive by Malzone for the home run not particularly well hit but well above the screen.
- 26:23It's his first All-Star home run. The next pitch to Abernico is inside for ball two and a count of two and all.
- 26:32Don Drysdale checking the scoreboard. The count two and all the score tied at one one.
- 26:38The ball is played by the ball.
- 26:40The ball is played by the ball.
- 26:43The ball is played by the ball.
- 26:46The ball is played by the ball.
- 26:48The ball is played by the ball.
- 26:56Now here's the three and all pitch by Don.
- 27:01There's a strike called on the inside corner to Abernico wearing his number 11 from the Chicago White Sox.
- 27:07One of the lightest men in baseball.
- 27:09Three one pitch.
- 27:11Rounding ball foul at the plate. The count goes to three and two.
- 27:15Three balls. Two strikes.
- 27:17Two down bases empty.
- 27:19The American League All-Stars. One the National League All-Stars. One on the top of the second half.
- 27:28Drysdale ready. Puzzles and ends.
- 27:31Ball four. Lower and outside.
- 27:33Drysdale not overly fond of that call as he walks his second man.
- 27:38He's given up two hits and one run.
- 27:42And Jerry Walker. The youngest man he would have picked in the All-Star game is coming up.
- 27:47Jerry Walker.
- 27:50And with Abernico at first base again the American League All-Stars made a nice little throw.
- 27:57Here's Drysdale looking at Abernico over at first.
- 28:07Lob's over there.
- 28:10He's got a much better toss than that.
- 28:12He was just putting that one on the showcase so to speak.
- 28:16Now no pitch to Walker. High for ball one.
- 28:21One ball and no strike with two down and runner at first base.
- 28:26And he's leading number two in the All-Star game in the Coliseum and looking into the California.
- 28:32There goes Abernico and the ball is taken for a strike and Carndall lost the ball.
- 28:38It bounced off his glove. He did not have a chance to make the throw.
- 28:42And since Abernico was running that will be considered a stolen base during the season.
- 28:48And Chicago he had 33 up until today so he gets on there. Now the nice delivery decided to warm up a relief pitcher at Drysdale
- 28:57is having a bit of trouble out there and it's Roy's face.
- 29:03One-on-one pitch. Walker swings and misses strike two.
- 29:09Two men out the score is tied at one-one.
- 29:15Carndall with another try now to Don Drysdale.
- 29:19Big down stretches. Now steps off.
- 29:23Abernico moving back into the bag. The second baseman toppled the shortstop bank.
- 29:28Not trying to keep him too close.
- 29:33Account one ball and two strikes. Drysdale fires. There's a swing and a miss on a curve in the...
- 29:38It is strike three and the side is retired for the American League All-Star. One run on one hit.
- 29:45There were no errors. One man is left gone.
- 29:48And as we move to the bottom of any number two it's a tie game at one-one.
- 29:55Ernie Banks leads off and swings on the first pitch and fouls it down the third base line.
- 30:00Strike one. Banks is batting three-tenths.
- 30:04In Chicago where he plays for the Cubs they call him Mr. Everything.
- 30:08He has 99 runs batted in with 29 on this five-triple and 16 doubles.
- 30:14An average of three-tenths for this right-hander hitting shortstop.
- 30:17Facing right-hander Jerry Walker.
- 30:20Walker throws. Right-spring foul tips is strike two.
- 30:27Walker is something of a surprise starter by Casey Stengel who had intended to start his own great reliever Ryan Deren.
- 30:33But he had to use Aaron yesterday and Walker certainly showed all-star clasp.
- 30:39Here's the picture of Banks. They're just swinging the ground ball slowly.
- 30:41He hits the left side. Shots him miles off over the first base pin-time.
- 30:45Ernie Banks is out. That's one down.
- 30:48In the second inning there's the American League All-Star.
- 30:51You're on the side. You're tied at one watch.
- 30:53Number six on the third quarter.
- 30:55San Muzio.
- 30:59One of the greatest of all time, San Muzio.
- 31:03On the St. Louis kite.
- 31:06Ruber has it that San the man may retire.
- 31:09We don't know about that. We're taking the bet to see him in the All-Star game.
- 31:14Here's the picture of Muzio that is high and outside for ball one.
- 31:19Muzio appearing in his 17th All-Star game has a batting average of three-oh-nine for those 17 games and nine runs batted in.
- 31:27Left out here with a count of one ball and no strike.
- 31:30Jerry Walker throws again. The man swings and fouls it back.
- 31:33Strikes one and one.
- 31:42One ball, one strike.
- 31:47Certainly wonderful that they have that cool breeze here today.
- 31:50As you know, this part of the country can get mighty warm during August, but it's very comfortable.
- 31:55One-on-one pitch, a slow curve and a swing and a foul strike too.
- 32:03Can't get over the ploy of that Jerry Walker out there.
- 32:07Only 20 years old appearing in an All-Star game.
- 32:11For all of the excitement he's portraying, he might just as well be pitching back on the stand lots of Ado Oklahoma.
- 32:20Now Walker facing Stan Muzio.
- 32:26Jerry Wines throws the stand that is low and outside, ball two and two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 32:36Yolkebara working behind the plate. Miles Groom at third, Apreet short short.
- 32:40Foxes second and Ronald at first.
- 32:42Williams, Madeline Merritt for starting out field. Still in there here in the bottom of the second inning.
- 32:46Two and two pitch to Muzio, a curve ball and a foul, and she took a late swing and fouled it back to the screen.
- 32:55Stan was looking for one in the wheelhouse, but that one wasn't in there, but he had the swing to protect.
- 33:05Two balls and two strikes.
- 33:10Jerry Walker gets the new baseball now.
- 33:13They're deep from Muzio on the infield and outfield with the exception of Williams who's playing a shallow left.
- 33:19Here's the two-two pitch, high for ball three.
- 33:23So the count goes to three and two on Stan Muzio.
- 33:33The target now from Yolkebara.
- 33:37The three and two pitch for Walker. There's a swing and a high foul left field out of play.
- 33:44And there's an all-star game.
- 33:46Susan here for some lucky fan back there.
- 33:49Three and two to count.
- 33:51There was a new baseball back to Jerry Walker.
- 33:58Muzio, Kichowsky and Yolkebara in a bit of a conversation at the play.
- 34:10Now the three and two pitch.
- 34:12Here's Yolke fouls another one deep to left field.
- 34:15That's out of play also and the count holds that three balls and two strikes.
- 34:30Walker gets another baseball.
- 34:34New Zealand at six U.S. batting style of his.
- 34:37Left-handed hitter, crouching low at the plate.
- 34:41Now the pitch inside ball four.
- 34:45Walker came in with a slider that missed the corner and Muzio draws the base on ball.
- 34:49And becomes the second base runner for the nice to make all-stars.
- 34:53There's a story side at one line in the bottom of the second inning.
- 35:01All the move. A member of the Los Angeles Dodgers after having had quite extensive service with the St. Louis Karten.
- 35:08The season's average is two ninety-two.
- 35:11New Zealand's first base was one down in the bottom of the second inning.
- 35:15Right-handed Jerry Walker hurling for the American League All-stars.
- 35:19Fires the Wally Moons.
- 35:20High ball one.
- 35:23One ball, no strike.
- 35:28Casey Stengel said that he might have to use a lot of pitchers today as he doesn't want to put too much weight on any pitchers' shoulders.
- 35:36Seven of his heralds have worked recently.
- 35:39Now the pitch to Moon, the text takes a foul strike over the outside.
- 35:43Fast ball up an eight.
- 35:44One and one.
- 35:51One ball and one strike to the left-handed batting Wally Moons.
- 35:56Muzio leading away.
- 35:58Walker throws.
- 35:59There's a swing and a foul of the screen.
- 36:01Two.
- 36:07Jokowski sent the new baseball out to Jerry Walker.
- 36:15Moon moves the bat around very well and there's a threat to hit the ball off the left field screen here at the Coliseum.
- 36:20He can pick him outside and also has the power to hit it over the right field fence.
- 36:25Muzio ready to go to fix the Moon a let up and a line.
- 36:31And he's facing a double play.
- 36:35He's runnig making a headlong dive off the bat.
- 36:38And it's no run.
- 36:39No hits, no errors.
- 36:40Nobody left on.
- 36:41It's a hand of two innings.
- 36:43The story is all tied at one watch.
- 36:49The imaginary golf star send up Pete Reynolds and his swings and fouls one that apparently winged catcher Del Crandall just a bit.
- 36:59Here's that it's hitting on the fleshy part of the left arm.
- 37:02But he's all right.
- 37:04That's what often happens in this game.
- 37:05You turn into sensational play and it's your turn to bat to lead off and that's Pete Reynolds who made the stab with a line drive by Wally Moons and turned it into the double play.
- 37:15Strike one drive the line throws again inside for a ball.
- 37:21Reynolds, Fox and Williams in the top of the third inning.
- 37:25The two clubs tied at one watch.
- 37:29Here's the one and one pitch now.
- 37:31Reynolds swings fouls it off strike two.
- 37:37His first time at bat Reynolds watch a strike out victim.
- 37:46Gene Connolly is throwing in the bullpen.
- 37:48Drive Dale swings the batter swings and fouls it off as Drive Dale fight it in.
- 37:52And it's one and two.
- 37:54Like you Gene Connolly, who has been a big help to the Philadelphia field for more than likely be the mid-winning pitcher today.
- 38:02Drive Dale of course is scheduled to go only three.
- 38:09Reynolds waiting for the one and two pitch.
- 38:11Don delivers as a swing and a foul over the visitor dugout back out of play.
- 38:22The count is one and two.
- 38:23The two clubs are tied.
- 38:25One has the only home run of the ball game.
- 38:32Another swing and another foul.
- 38:35Here to see baseball is a special.
- 38:38The great players of the American and National League.
- 38:43Ready for the one and two pitch.
- 38:45A let up is outside for ball two and two.
- 38:52Two strikes. Reynolds played straight away with moon guarding the left field line quite a bit.
- 38:58Two, two pitch.
- 38:59Back three calls.
- 39:01First ball on the inside corner and Reynolds walks back to the bench.
- 39:05Drive Dale striking out the assistive.
- 39:08And Nellie Fox, who came the first base run of the day when he walked back in the first inning, is up now.
- 39:14This is the top of the third with one down on the bases empty and the score tied at one one.
- 39:21Nellie.
- 39:23Frankie Crosetti coaching over at third and Jeryn lets go Nellie.
- 39:28Here's the pitch.
- 39:30Outside it's a ball.
- 39:34Cook and Lavageetto coaching over at first.
- 39:38Count one ball and no strikes.
- 39:40Drive Dale walks off the hill to do a bit of landscaping out there.
- 39:46I like to keep that mound as smooth as possible.
- 39:49One of them kicks the puck, lines high, face hits the right field.
- 39:53Inquickly as Aaron picks it up, gets it back into the infield and foxes on with hit number three for the American League.
- 40:03Nellie.
- 40:08Nellie had the first hit.
- 40:11He butted past the mound and beat it out.
- 40:13He was thrown out of the ceiling and with two downs, Mow's home forward over the left field screen.
- 40:18Here's Ted Williams.
- 40:20Drive Dale pitches and boy there's a big swing in the mid-dike line.
- 40:24Williams had ideas on that one and you can see why that fellow's had such a fabulous batting career.
- 40:34There's a quick go to first base.
- 40:37Fox is back in.
- 40:39Williams batting 4-17 in all-star league competition.
- 40:43Who'll ever forget the game that he broke up back in 1941 with that dramatic home run in Detroit.
- 40:47There's a high giant that's centered well back in the left center of his Wally Mound.
- 40:52He's got room and he makes the catch.
- 40:55And it is half number two.
- 40:57That ball was made 50 homers in the right center with him almost straight away to center.
- 41:02And Moon, who had skated well down towards center field, made the catch.
- 41:07Two downs, Fox had to go back to first.
- 41:10And here is Yogi Berra.
- 41:13Strikeout victim his first time.
- 41:17Score tied at 1-1, top of the third inning.
- 41:20Melly Fox, who wrapped a single to right field, is on at first.
- 41:24Drive Dale throws to first quickly.
- 41:26Mugula attempts no tag as the runner is back in.
- 41:33Don Drive Dale checks at first again and quickly flips to first.
- 41:40Fox has only four fields on the field, but he's a very heady base runner.
- 41:47Now the pitch to Yogi, there's a swing in the long drive to right field, a shot at chance.
- 41:51Back is 10, and let's call it con for a homer to Yogi Berra.
- 42:07And it is amazing that Yogi's first all-star game home run.
- 42:13He's had a lot of other hits, and he's played in a lot of all-star games,
- 42:16but that is his first home run in all-star competition.
- 42:19And the American League lead at 3-1, as Melly Fox go ahead of him.
- 42:24Here's the pitch to Mannel, him side for a ball.
- 42:26That homer by Berra pulls sharply down the line,
- 42:29sailed over the 333 foot mark, and had a lot of room to spare.
- 42:34The American League leading, 3-1.
- 42:38Mannel batting, a count one ball and no strikes.
- 42:41A let up is in side for a ball two and no strikes.
- 42:49Berra apparently was waiting for that one.
- 42:52Now the two and all pitch to the make is low on outside, ball three.
- 42:58So the American League starting to show its power.
- 43:04Now the three and all pitch.
- 43:06Strike called over the outside, it's 3-1.
- 43:12Yogi Berra on the season has 14 homers for the game,
- 43:15and he picked a tough part to hit his first all-star game homer.
- 43:18That strike two calls, and Mannel over the outside,
- 43:21he can't join through 3-2.
- 43:25Now in his 11th all-star game, gets his first all-star homer.
- 43:293 and 2 pitch, ball four outside, Mannel walks.
- 43:35Drydale gives up his third base on balls.
- 43:39He has allowed four hits, three runs.
- 43:43His club trailing now 3-1 on the top of the third,
- 43:46and right fielder Roger Merritt, the strike advocate
- 43:49on his first trip to the plate is up now.
- 43:53The first time that he's been selected for all-star play, it has not appeared.
- 43:57Drydale loves the first, and Mannel is back in.
- 44:03Mannel without feeling his first time.
- 44:06Here's the pitch to Merritt, there's a liner in the right field,
- 44:08and it's coming quickly, and makes the grab on the run to the diamond.
- 44:12In the top of the third, it is two runs, two hits, no errors.
- 44:16One left on, and the score going to the bottom.
- 44:19Of hitting number three, it's 3-1 American League.
- 44:26Mannel, Crandall leading off in the bottom, getting number three.
- 44:30We'll have a pitch hitter for the nice league all-stars.
- 44:33Early win is joined for the American League.
- 44:37Crandall with the season's average of 254, takes the swing and misses, strike one.
- 44:47Here's the first hearing in his fourth all-star game,
- 44:50is running 125 with one out of eight.
- 44:53Here's Walker Thorey, here's the line drive foul on left field, strike two.
- 44:57Eddie Matthews is out on strike, he will act as the pitch hitter.
- 45:01Ford Don Drydale, who has wound up his three innings.
- 45:06New catchers chatting to each other up there.
- 45:09Gilder Baran, Mannel Crandall.
- 45:15Cattle on two, score three-one, the American League leading.
- 45:23Jerry Walker, closer to Crandall, more one outside.
- 45:32Crandall acts as the captain of the Milwaukee Braves,
- 45:36and reminds you a lot of a quarterback.
- 45:39Here's a pitch inside for Borough two.
- 45:43He's always straightening up during the game to position somebody to act as the holler guy.
- 45:53He has a count of two balls and two strikes as he leads off, and Walker throws.
- 45:57Crandall fouls it to the right, the count holds a two and two.
- 46:05Jim Connick continues to throw for the National League early win for the American League outside.
- 46:15The count now has two balls and two strikes,
- 46:17Bill Crandall leading off in the bottom of the third inning,
- 46:19Jerry Walker into the wind up the pitch,
- 46:21foul back, and a continued count of two and two.
- 46:28Two balls, two strikes.
- 46:31Later on in the day, of course, we'll get the official paid attendance.
- 46:34It has to be a big one.
- 46:41Jerry Walker pitching for the American League throws to Crandall,
- 46:45Bill beats another foul at the place, and it holds that two and two.
- 46:54No changes for either club as yet.
- 46:56We'll see the first change when it comes to pitch it turned to bat.
- 47:00Eddie Mathews will bat for Don Drysdale.
- 47:09Walker and Crandall hanging in there, the two and two pitch.
- 47:12Crandall lines one of the center field, base hit.
- 47:15Letting overcooked him to pick it up as Maddox.
- 47:18Fires behind the runner, and Crandall has to slide back in.
- 47:23As Maddox goes off in a power that's fine throwing off.
- 47:29Crandall makes a big turn expecting a throw to go into second,
- 47:33and Crandall there with that base ball on its way to third.
- 47:36And it's hit number two for the nice to leave off, Crandall.
- 47:39And Eddie Mathews is up now.
- 47:42Mathews playing in his fifth all-star game, has had one out of 11,
- 47:47and he is batting for Don Drysdale, who worked three innings,
- 47:51gave up three runs, four hits, walked three and struck out five.
- 47:58To leave the Crandall at third base,
- 48:01Walker delivers high on outside ball one.
- 48:05Jerry has walked one man, Sam Musings.
- 48:08Bottom of the third inning, the tempo of the game increases.
- 48:12Now that one team has established a lead,
- 48:15and the national lead, the sentimental favorites here in Los Angeles,
- 48:19because of their team, the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- 48:23To leave the Crandall, here's the pitch, Mathews falls into the screen.
- 48:27Thank one and one.
- 48:30And we have four to two here.
- 48:32There's a flexing glass backstop, ground level,
- 48:38and they cut the sailing back there once in a while,
- 48:41kicks you up.
- 48:44Nobody down a lot of the plate, but Del Crandall,
- 48:47and Eddie Mathews is the batter.
- 48:53Ready for the one and one pitch, here's a swing and a high foul to the right,
- 48:58out of play.
- 49:01Counted one ball and two strikes.
- 49:13Right hander, Jerry Walker, only 20 years old,
- 49:15is one of eight in last five for the Baltimore Orioles.
- 49:22And he doesn't appear to be overawed by this all-star game situation at all.
- 49:30Mathews waiting on the one and two pitch now.
- 49:34Jerry Walker's ready to throw. Mathews swings and misses strike three.
- 49:38Eddie was fighting an even 373 runs,
- 49:41and he went down, going for a high fastball toward the outside.
- 49:48That is strikeout number one for Walker.
- 49:51And here is Johnny Temple, the second baseman.
- 49:54Temple doubled over a shortstop, his first time at that, went to third.
- 49:59On an infield over off the bat of Ken Boyer and scored,
- 50:02when Aaron hit a high flight on the right field line,
- 50:05caught by Merritts, but deep enough for Temple to score.
- 50:09Crandall at first with one out.
- 50:11Jerry Walker throws, strike called over the outside corner to me.
- 50:20Crandall blocked the goal there at first, but didn't.
- 50:25Mathews temple checks with Billy Herman,
- 50:28who coaches for them a walkie-braise during the regular season.
- 50:31Walker throws the first base to Ronald, back in his Crandall.
- 50:42Here's the right hander ready again. Walker throws the temple.
- 50:45The only attempt to butt misses is a throw to first base, and Crandall is barely back in.
- 50:50Temple is telling Bill to Koffke that he did not monitor balls,
- 50:53but it is called strike two just the same.
- 51:01This time pass today, the Koffke calling the balls and strikes.
- 51:05Chollibera, a very rather at first,
- 51:09on his infield of second base, and Bill summers at third,
- 51:12with Burr Card and Stewart taking care of the left and right field foul line.
- 51:17Temple is at a count of two strikes now, a good man hitting that ball to right field.
- 51:21Jerry Walker throws, Johnny Temple swings in front of a high drive to center,
- 51:25Mathews back half-room, waiting makes the catch at number two.
- 51:33Well that puts it all up to ten ball here, it's a nice league all-star,
- 51:36better do any scoring here, and the bottom of the third inning with two down.
- 51:41American League leading, three to one on the bottom of the third.
- 51:49Boyer appearing in his third all-star contest.
- 52:00He's been applying here in his two other games, he has four out of six up until today,
- 52:06four out of seven now, the fifth to Boyer, strike over the outside corner.
- 52:13Ken's a right hander-hitter in one of the three Boyer brothers to make the big leagues,
- 52:19Floyd, Cletus, and Kenny.
- 52:26The only one stretch out of fifth to Boyer, low for a ball and it's one and one.
- 52:32Matt's seen some changes now after three innings as manager Casey Stengel and Fred Haney
- 52:37have some great stars at the Water Shield offensive on the West Coast.
- 52:47The counter is one and one, straight away in deep defense in all departments against Ken Boyer.
- 52:56He's got the crannel at first, now the pitch, low for ball two, two balls and a strike.
- 53:05The American League one ahead, off Don Drysdale on the top of the third inning,
- 53:11with Yogi Berra, over to the right field three.
- 53:17After two and one stretch here it is to Boyer, a take wide for ball three.
- 53:22The slider, went a little too far, got three balls and a strike.
- 53:36So now Boyer looks down and quietly at Billy Harlan, the third base coach.
- 53:42Crandall is in on the secret.
- 53:45Three and one-six, there's a swing and a foul down the third base line, the count three and two.
- 53:50Now in this situation Crandall will be going, and yelling because the fan down the left field line
- 53:59failed to stop that ground ball as it was bounding into the field and then a park attendant, got it.
- 54:10It's three and two to Ken Boyer.
- 54:12Two down, three one in the American League, leading the right to the league,
- 54:16Callateam and Los Angeles, a quick go to first base and Bill Crandall is back in.
- 54:26Now ladies and gentlemen, three and two to Ken Boyer, off the foul.
- 54:30Ken Boyer, off the walk, and up to the left field, off the drive.
- 54:40Another new baseball after Jerry Walker.
- 54:44The breeze and one of quite a bit of force is going straight out toward center field.
- 54:51Certainly not a gale, but it's enough to cool off the Callateam and help fly balls that are hit near the fences out in that direction.
- 54:59Again the three-two stretch, the Crandall goes, here's a high pop up to the left side of the infield,
- 55:05waiting for it as Apparecchio, and the shut-up has it and they've died as they tired.
- 55:10No runs, one hit, no errors, one man is left off.
- 55:13At the end of three, the American League three, the national league one.
- 55:18Do you, do you want, do you really want a decent game?
- 55:25Do you really want a decent game?
- 55:29That's the way, that's the way, that's the way, that's the way, that's the way, that's the way, that's the way.
- 55:40We now have 30 seconds for station identification.
- 55:45WGY 810 on your radio dial, WGF and Schenectady.
- 55:49Well it's the hottest team in town, Jim Shultz and the team of expert mechanics and salesmen at Schenectady Plymouth.
- 55:56Sales are zooming, trade-ins bring more, the service is unbeatable.
- 56:00Drive up Plymouth from Schenectady Plymouth, 1016 State Street.
- 56:08Get out, 32.
- 56:17A new pitcher for the NICELIG, Tim Conway comes in and if Gary Walker walks to the bench for the American League all-size,
- 56:24he was given a fine then.
- 56:27This young right-hander worked the first three innings against the Power League and NICELIG team and held them the two hits.
- 56:33Confidently, it could have had a shutout and it not been for a bad hop on a single hit by Johnny Temple in the first minute,
- 56:40resulted in a double, it's a ball bounded over the head of Ted Williams.
- 56:44He went through four three innings, gave up one run, allowed two hits.
- 56:49Walked one and struck out one.
- 56:52So now, Jim Conway, formerly with the Milwaukee Braves, the full left of Boston Braves,
- 56:58and now with the Philadelphia Fills, is the oncoming pitcher.
- 57:04Conway is making an appearance in his third all-star game.
- 57:08He has one-one while losing one.
- 57:11A towering right-hander and a great basketball player with a Boston Celtic.
- 57:14The pitch to Frank Malzone is low on him's side for ball one.
- 57:18Conway represents the only player change for the NICELIG so far today.
- 57:27The NICELIG team throws to Malzone, low for ball two.
- 57:30Malzone went over the left field screen in the first time at bat.
- 57:38This is the fourth game for Malzone in all-star competition.
- 57:44Here's the two-and-old pitch now.
- 57:47Zag got back ball over the outside.
- 57:50It's Malzone, Aparichiel and a pinch hitter for Jerry Walker.
- 57:55In the top of the fourth inning.
- 57:59The catch is two-and-one. Conway wide throws.
- 58:02Malzone takes ball three. High on the outside, it's three-and-one.
- 58:10We've all been a strike.
- 58:19Here's Conway firing again.
- 58:21Malzone swings and pops at high foul and out of sight of the left even though Kenny Boyer shoots it all the way to the sixth.
- 58:29The NICELIG team, in fact, with its starting line with moon and left, mazes instead of airing and right.
- 58:35Boyer at third.
- 58:37Banks at short. Temple at second.
- 58:39Gagele at first.
- 58:43Crandall catching and him Conway the only replacement.
- 58:47The three-and-two pitch to Frank Malzone.
- 58:49Now, the back to Conway.
- 58:51Here's who the highly-roasted first.
- 58:53And Gagele's a big hand.
- 58:55Conway's showing his fast-kick ball ability and went far up in the air to come down with that.
- 59:02Now, Willie Aparichiel is about it.
- 59:07It's third all-star game.
- 59:10One of the real speedsters of the game.
- 59:12And on the season, about in 273, where they should go to the white spot.
- 59:16And one of the big leaders, while they're leading the league.
- 59:20Here's Conway pitching. Aparichiel swings and fouls it to the right. Strike one.
- 59:30In goes the Rosenberg again.
- 59:36Malzone, number 11.
- 59:38Another Aparichiel, number 11 waiting.
- 59:40Swings down to slowly to the left side. Up with it is Boyer. Hips to first. And Aparichiel is out for out number two.
- 59:47Now, the American lady has sent up a pitch hitter.
- 59:50Holder starting pitcher, Jerry Walker.
- 59:54He's runnig in the on-back circle. He'll go to the bench.
- 59:58Let's have a hitter up here.
- 1:00:02And Gene Woodling, who's having a fabulous season with the Baltimore club, is coming up to pinch it.
- 1:00:09Pinch it for Jerry Walker.
- 1:00:14Your attention, please.
- 1:00:17The last time I've had him, Woodling, has had some days here of late.
- 1:00:23From the bottom of the line.
- 1:00:24Late for headlines when he drives in all the runs.
- 1:00:26That is 341 on the season with 61 runs by the end and 15 homers.
- 1:00:31And Gene has always been the type of hitter.
- 1:00:34When he gets in a streak with that beautiful group swing of his, it's almost impossible to get him out.
- 1:00:39A stocky left-handed batter.
- 1:00:45Against Connors, Gene throws. Woodling flings and pops his foul to the left and out of place. Strike one.
- 1:00:57It's a nice to wait to use one pinch hitter Matthews, who would like to strike that victim.
- 1:01:02And Woodling, starting to play, crouching very low as Connors throws.
- 1:01:06Gene flings on a change-up curve and it's strike two.
- 1:01:11Two down the base is nothing.
- 1:01:13The American League All-Star is leading, three to one.
- 1:01:19The on-two-pitch for Connors to win, a bounding ball beats the first base.
- 1:01:22Grab the stand, use your left-muse, and runs over and ties the wagon as bad as you can.
- 1:01:27And he draws a big hand for that and Connors gets a hand too.
- 1:01:30No runs, no hits, no errors, nobody left on.
- 1:01:33When moved to the bottom of the fourth inning, the score of the game is American League three, nice to league one.
- 1:01:38Here in the Coliseum in Los Angeles, California, where the score is the American League three, the nice to league one,
- 1:01:43a new hurler comes on early win. He has been selected for All-Star competition six times.
- 1:01:49He has been in five games.
- 1:01:53And early has one win to his credit and no defeat in All-Star competition.
- 1:02:00On the season, this great right-hander for the Chicago White Sox is 1-14 while losing six.
- 1:02:07And it's one of those active players around who has given a stand-up, reaching the 300 mark in victory.
- 1:02:16He will face Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Ernie Banks in the bottom of inning number four.
- 1:02:25And at his first time, set a sacrifice on the season.
- 1:02:33Here's how he's going to win.
- 1:02:37All-Star.
- 1:02:41The first time that one might have to miss a pitching turn or two, he's having a picture made the other day,
- 1:02:47and the bench collapsed about, as it's early says, about ten big fat guys fell on him.
- 1:02:54But his foot appears to be alright.
- 1:02:57The one and only left, wing of the next player, and on a high-breaking career ball,
- 1:03:01they're broken across the letters, the count is one and one.
- 1:03:06The American League All-Star is leading, three to one.
- 1:03:10Henry Aaron Banks, over the 400 mark for a long time on the season, now at a patty, three-sixty-six.
- 1:03:19One and one pitch, Aaron goes for a high-fast ball and doesn't get it, strike two.
- 1:03:28The count is one and two.
- 1:03:38Early when studies these signs, no other changes in the American League defense.
- 1:03:44Just in the pitchers' box.
- 1:03:47Here's the one and two pitch, not Aaron.
- 1:03:50A swing and a high popper, yet right near the mouth, coming over third base with miles on,
- 1:03:56and Frank makes the one-handed catch, as it's apparently, but it's not adding more to the best,
- 1:04:01but he was able to blow this one-handed.
- 1:04:04Now we'll bring up Willie May.
- 1:04:10And Mays and Wynne face each other many a time in the World Series of 1954,
- 1:04:17and also many times in spring training, as early as a pitcher for the Cleveland Indians for years,
- 1:04:23when they trained against the Giants over in Arizona.
- 1:04:27When studying Willie Mays, with one down and the bottom of the four-finnings,
- 1:04:32and Willie has been feeding everything high, if this is not a Willie, there's a curved, nice call on the inside corner.
- 1:04:38Boy, he broke off a beauty.
- 1:04:43Mays batting 293 on the season for the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:04:49Early when Wynne throws again, curve, and misses outside, it's a ball, one and one.
- 1:04:57Ball and strike with one down, the nice, linked fan here getting a bit impatient, starting to level those hands together.
- 1:05:04They want some activity.
- 1:05:08Here's the one and one, since Mays is swinging a high top of the short right field.
- 1:05:12Nellie Fox is getting back, getting a beat on it now, and he makes the catch for out number two.
- 1:05:18Two men down, and Ernie Banks, the great shortstop of the Cubs, will be up.
- 1:05:24Ernie's down about the third, his first time.
- 1:05:33Mays appearing in his fifth All-Star game, has batted 11 times with three hits.
- 1:05:38Two doubles, he's looking for his first All-Star home run.
- 1:05:43Early when delivers, Banks takes a slider, tight called over the outside.
- 1:05:50The American League leading three to one with two down, the base is empty, and the bottom of the fourth inning.
- 1:05:56As Wynne Wynne delivers again, Banks takes the high curve inside for a ball one and one.
- 1:06:01On occasion, but not too often, Wynne will show you the knuckleball, only one he figures, and he has you set up for it perfectly.
- 1:06:11It's not his Sunday pitch at all.
- 1:06:14With one and one fastball, a swing and a strike two, one and two.
- 1:06:27Straight away, and big defense for Ernie Banks.
- 1:06:33Now the one and two delivery.
- 1:06:35That swings and misses, that's it, and the nice moves are out of order.
- 1:06:39No hit, no errors, nobody left on, and so at the end of the fourth inning, the score is the American League three, the nice to league one.
- 1:06:55There is a lineup change for the nice to league.
- 1:06:58Stan Mugil has been relieved at first base, and Frank Robinson will go into shape over there.
- 1:07:05As we have the top of the order up for the American League, Pete Ronald, Nellie Fox and Chad Williams.
- 1:07:16Jim Connelly in his first inning of pitching, retired the tail end of the batting order, Miles on Apparicio, and Gene Woodling, with no difficulty.
- 1:07:27Now you'll be facing the top of the order, Ronald, Fox and Williams.
- 1:07:30In the top of the fifth, the American League leading three to one, a home run by a fellow John accounting for one of their runs, a two run over by Yogi Berra over the distant right field screen for their three,
- 1:07:40a double by Johnny Temple, and a sacrifice fly by Hank Aaron, accounting for the only run for the nice to league all the time.
- 1:07:49Connelly pitching to Pete Ronald from the red sock, there's a batter hit slowly to the right side, and is fouled before Frank Robinson at first base can pick it up.
- 1:07:59Well, Ronald's a one.
- 1:08:04Ronald's in a great battle for the American League batting title last season with no doubt of a last few days of the campaign by his own teammates, Ed Williams.
- 1:08:16Pete hit some of the crotch, choked up a bit, and his left hand is batting stance.
- 1:08:23Chalice outfield defense against him, Connelly gives it the fastball down low for ball one.
- 1:08:30One ball and one strike.
- 1:08:36Gene Connelly throws again now, fastball is inside ball two. Connelly came straight over the top that time.
- 1:08:43Gene's ragged with the field nine and seven. Philadelphia club had trouble winning on the West Coast in regular season play until Connelly picks into a win hole with a giant that field stadium in San Francisco.
- 1:08:56Ball three, high and inside with a fastball.
- 1:08:59Real one.
- 1:09:02White wall out, he with the dazzling knuckleball, but warming up with Elston Howard.
- 1:09:09Connelly is low, ball four, and Pete Ronald walks with Connelly, walks his first man and submits his first base runner, but he came off.
- 1:09:20Drivesale with the first three, gives him three runs all earned on four hits, walk three and struck out five.
- 1:09:29Now, Nellie Fox will be the batter in Bill Sandel, decide this would be a good time to go out and have a chat with Gene Connelly.
- 1:09:40With Wilhelm warming up, we saw early women head for the showers and that must have been case to single general idea, just that early pitch one in.
- 1:09:51Wilhelm is firing them up a ball down the left-hand line. Nellie Fox had a conference with Cookie and I was getting out of his first base coach.
- 1:10:01They tell Ronald all about it. Ronald is on the back now. Fox is a good man for the front order hit and runs.
- 1:10:07Killed up on the club. Here's the lead at first base.
- 1:10:13The overhand curve called a strike and Nellie Fox went selected for an all-star play nine times and has appeared in eight games.
- 1:10:21Overall average is 346. Today a perfect right here with a walk and a single.
- 1:10:26Top of the fifth inning, three to one, the American League leading. Connelly checks his first post to Fox again a pitch out, but the runner Pete Ronald's first was not going.
- 1:10:37And Williams has a couple of pieces of lumber. It is loosening up down to our left.
- 1:10:45The temperature of the call of team today is 70.
- 1:10:49But just Fox left 1,000. The left side out of play and it's a count of one ball and two strikes.
- 1:11:04One to the count. No matter down or on a first.
- 1:11:08Frank Robinson right on the back with the runner. Connelly throws and Fox wins and grabs it to Johnny Temple to go to second to bank for one back to third. No double play.
- 1:11:18Just one out on the fourth and second base. Johnny Temple number four to running bank number six if you're starting.
- 1:11:24And again for his good attack. In the game here is said with you.
- 1:11:29That is found out the first to fly to left.
- 1:11:36The legend for all star plays 16 times.
- 1:11:44Here's the latest place to pitch to Williams low for ball one.
- 1:11:48That is had only one real good cut at a ball today. That was his last time up when he started he liked to audience.
- 1:11:54With a tremendous way he knows but you can certainly see that wonderful rhythm and power that he presents.
- 1:12:03It's currently set to change up. This is the outside for ball two.
- 1:12:08A quick throw to first base and sliding back in there and then first is Mellie Fox.
- 1:12:13He tore up quite a bit of Los Angeles rule of stake getting back in there.
- 1:12:20Count to ball most right.
- 1:12:25That was him. The left side of it.
- 1:12:27Conway throws the head strike at the name of fast ball on the inside corner.
- 1:12:35The count out to one.
- 1:12:39The fans thrilling to the threat of said Williams is the 21 pictures.
- 1:12:43We're going to follow the right side. The count goes to two and two.
- 1:12:49Had injury problems throughout his entire career.
- 1:12:52More than his shaft up break.
- 1:12:55Like it was in an all star game a few years ago in Chicago.
- 1:12:58They collided with the left field scoreboard and broke his wrist.
- 1:13:03He's had numerous other injuries mostly during spring training.
- 1:13:07Here's the two pitchers for Williams and swinging a little strike three.
- 1:13:11Conway's ducking out on a free throw ball.
- 1:13:16Up at the plate now. Held him out.
- 1:13:19Responsible for the two run late in the morning American League.
- 1:13:21It's the homers.
- 1:13:23Over the eastern right field swing.
- 1:13:25One of the toughest parts for the left-handed hitter for the homer.
- 1:13:28In base box.
- 1:13:30Two down.
- 1:13:31Out of the fifth inning.
- 1:13:33Ronald who walked in that first base.
- 1:13:36Conway to face Yogi.
- 1:13:40A trick.
- 1:13:41I cleared inside ball one.
- 1:13:44There's been selected for all star place 12 signs as appeared in 10-missions.
- 1:13:55Jim Conway fires again to Yogi.
- 1:13:57There's a curve that gets in over the letters on the outside of called strike one and one.
- 1:14:05Four hits for the American League all star.
- 1:14:07Just two for the National League.
- 1:14:12Shipped around to the right on Yogi now.
- 1:14:14Conway comes in wide with ball two.
- 1:14:17Count two and one.
- 1:14:25Walley Moon the left fielder.
- 1:14:28Well down at left center giving Yogi all of the left field line.
- 1:14:32Here's the two and one pitch.
- 1:14:33Bear swings and fouls in that direction.
- 1:14:35Hits out of play back among the strike table.
- 1:14:42Heave it up.
- 1:14:43Two balls.
- 1:14:44Two strikes.
- 1:14:49Base ball interest and rivalry here on the West Coast intense between the Giants and the Dodgers.
- 1:14:56Here's a curve and a swing and a foul back and a continued count of two and two.
- 1:15:00Then with the fact that Milwaukee is visiting the West Coast, first the place that Francisco and then Los Angeles during the coming week.
- 1:15:07Everybody wants to take it to the body.
- 1:15:10And the same for the hills around all of the other cities in the American League.
- 1:15:15Here's Conway's two-two pitch to Bear swinging a back three in the side of the track.
- 1:15:20No run, no hit, no errors.
- 1:15:22One left knock.
- 1:15:24Moving to the bottom of inning number five.
- 1:15:26The score is American League three, nice to league one.
- 1:15:31That's way left field for the American League.
- 1:15:35Moving to the bottom of inning number five.
- 1:15:37And ready to take over now as we have a few lineup changes.
- 1:15:41You've heard this fellow on many of the famous sports events, the Bulls games.
- 1:15:45All-Star and World Series sports.
- 1:15:47And the season you're here with the cool interview. Bob Neal.
- 1:15:50Thank you very much, Rod.
- 1:15:51Hello everybody.
- 1:15:52We're ready to move into the last half of the fifth inning here in the College
- 1:16:20and we're going to take a look at the game.
- 1:16:22And going out into right field is Rocky Calabido.
- 1:16:24We've got some changes in the umpire and two.
- 1:16:26Bill Summers of the American League will take over at the plate.
- 1:16:29And going down to third base will be Ken Berthart.
- 1:16:37And out in right field is Bill Joukowski.
- 1:16:40Now Joukowski's coming out now. He'll get out on the third base.
- 1:16:42We'll take some for you as they work out.
- 1:16:44And that's Frank Robinson is coming along and Robinson who took over at third base at first base with family as you moved in there now first time at bat.
- 1:16:53So Bill Summers works the plate.
- 1:16:55And Frank Robinson steps in.
- 1:16:59Fine ball player from the center of Red Lake started as an outfielder.
- 1:17:03Has moved to first base.
- 1:17:04Has been a great help to find your Freddie Hutchinson in the Red Lake.
- 1:17:07The outfield shades to the left.
- 1:17:08First pitch by win.
- 1:17:09A swing of John Deacon and Paulie Caring and it is going back and it is over to Robinson.
- 1:17:17Robinson picks on that first pitch.
- 1:17:19Summers will win a fast ball and he drives it high over the left field fence.
- 1:17:22Left center field fence if you will about 335 feet away.
- 1:17:26Well done, I think.
- 1:17:27Now they quiet up to this time.
- 1:17:29Suddenly strikes with devastating force and they pick up a run and it's three to two.
- 1:17:34Robinson on the first pitch gets his first off-side game homerun.
- 1:17:38Up there now is Wally Moon.
- 1:17:40He lines into a double play on a fine flag and a line drive by the first base on C. Ronald.
- 1:17:46Wally Moon left hand batters, stands deep in the box.
- 1:17:49The outfield playing him straight away.
- 1:17:51Now he's on the third move in just off the edge of the grass.
- 1:17:54Earl Winn, the veteran right hander, deals a field ball at top five ball one.
- 1:18:01Nationally prepares now to make a number of changes. They've got a lot of activity along the sidelines.
- 1:18:09Earl Winn looking into Yogi Barra is set and fires down.
- 1:18:13There is a curve outside ball two. Two balls, no strike.
- 1:18:16The batter, Wally Moon and the American League League 3-2 are playing in the last half of the set-thinny.
- 1:18:22Four hits for the American League, three hits for the National League and it's been some big ones.
- 1:18:26Pan Jones is throwing in the bullpen for the National League. Fine right hander from the San Francisco Giants.
- 1:18:33Winn takes down the sign, very deliberate wind-up, two ball delivery.
- 1:18:38There's a curve that catches the outside corner and it's two and one.
- 1:18:43There's a fine breeze blowing up towards the outfield.
- 1:18:50And the fans really enjoying this one.
- 1:18:52Earl Winn with the sign is ready. Fires on the two-one pitch, it's outside ball three.
- 1:18:57Three balls and a strike now to Wally Moon. The National League with nobody outbounding in the last half of the set-thinny,
- 1:19:03they've drawn within one run of the tie.
- 1:19:07Yolly Fox drifting back at second base, Pete Reynolds deep at first.
- 1:19:12And Earl Winn, back at the spotter, three-one.
- 1:19:15Comes down with the next pitch and it's a high curve outside ball four.
- 1:19:19So the National League gets Wally Moon on first base.
- 1:19:22And there's a runner there with Del Cando coming along.
- 1:19:26Cando got a single right through the center in the third inning.
- 1:19:32So Earl Winn now has his word cut out for him as Del Cando, who can hit the long ball
- 1:19:38and who's a cagey veteran of experience at that place.
- 1:19:41Slightly open stance now, zone is backed up from the third base back about two or three steps.
- 1:19:47The outfield is shading around to the left now, it's Colby Donight's center.
- 1:19:51Reynolds holds against the runner to look by Winn.
- 1:19:54And the pitch fired down to Cando. He fires to Boney Fox just, and it is grabbed by Winn for the out.
- 1:19:59Time to bump that ball and top it up right inside the plate.
- 1:20:02Grab by early Winn for out number one and Wally Moon hustles back to first.
- 1:20:13Number 15 coming up there now is Joe Cunningham.
- 1:20:18He's done an outstanding job for the St. Louis Cardinals this year.
- 1:20:21He's a good fan about it.
- 1:20:24Now the season has been hitting the 3-43, flying in the outfield.
- 1:20:32So now Nellie Fox and Earl Winn get together to have a little visit on how they're going to pitch to this young man.
- 1:20:38He can swing that big bat and the difference in the ball game at the moment is only one run.
- 1:20:43American League 3 the nice league 2 and the base runner on it first with only one man out.
- 1:20:51Dilley O'Dowell a left hander working in the American League ball fan.
- 1:20:54Here's the check by Winn, the check on the runner's first hand to pitch.
- 1:20:57Now side ball one.
- 1:21:00Winn may be bothered a little by the bandage that he has around his left ankle
- 1:21:05and is reported to you during a safety checking session for the team.
- 1:21:11Part of the platform collapsed and an early sound about five members of the white stock sitting on him.
- 1:21:16Throw to first, back throw, back safely.
- 1:21:20One ball no side.
- 1:21:23Easy lob over to first, he's back safely.
- 1:21:29Alright, Cunningham who stands very deep in that box, he's almost taken hands there with umpire Bill Summers working the place.
- 1:21:36Look over to first in the place, one down, about to the left right, I believe you're having a piece of the box.
- 1:21:41Throw to first, he's too late. Fourth play at second base.
- 1:21:44While our slow rowers have to wait for it to come along and he tossed it over to the fourth.
- 1:21:51But Cunningham gets on.
- 1:21:56So Cunningham on a few of his shots, he's on that batting for the counter.
- 1:22:01And Junior Gilliam is coming along.
- 1:22:04Junior is a quick hitter batting from the left side against the right hander early win.
- 1:22:08Gilliam batting 3-19 and he'll get a big hand, as he represents the Los Angeles Tigers.
- 1:22:17Early win now with a runner first two out, playing in the last defense inning.
- 1:22:21He has won to Gilliam outside with a curve and it's all won. The vaccine wins for the knuckleball yet.
- 1:22:31Vader Pinson, a very fast man, has come in to run for Cunningham.
- 1:22:41So Pinson, Vader Pinson, a very quick foot of youngsters, comes in to run for Joe Cunningham.
- 1:22:48With the battered Junior Gilliam, swinging that wood in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:22:50The homer by Barry in the third gave him two minutes free.
- 1:22:53The batter leaves away. Win takes the stretch and takes a look at him.
- 1:22:56The National League got a run on a double and it's back to five-and-a-half.
- 1:22:56Pinson has been away the pitch. It's just outside and it's all two. Two balls, no strike.
- 1:23:00The homer is going to run for the second.
- 1:23:02Well that home run ball has been a big one today. Not too many of them, but what had been hit has gone for an important run.
- 1:23:06The homer is going to run for the second.
- 1:23:10The homer is going to run for the third.
- 1:23:14The homer by Barry in the third gave him two minutes free. The National League got a run on a double and it's back to five-and-a-half.
- 1:23:20The first inning to take an early lead.
- 1:23:22And now the National League threatened here in the fifth inning as Robinson hits one for a homer on.
- 1:23:26They have a run on at first two outs.
- 1:23:28All two counts of the batter, Junior Gilliam again wins.
- 1:23:30Pits on the runner.
- 1:23:32There goes Pinson. The pitch is hung on and fouled back.
- 1:23:36So Pinson gets a tremendous jump on a pitcher and can really fly.
- 1:23:40It started down the second, comes back as the ball is fouled off.
- 1:23:44Two balls in the strike.
- 1:23:54David Pinson has had 16 steals on the season so far.
- 1:23:58So you get an idea of just how fast and loose this young man is.
- 1:24:02Win is mindful of it, throws over to first, he's back safely again.
- 1:24:10Sets now by Win. Pinson bobbing him a little bit, edges away. Two balls in the strike.
- 1:24:14Mark and his feet and Win now tips off the runner.
- 1:24:18Fans are loving it.
- 1:24:20Alright, once again Pinson jumps off to a lead. There's Win with a threat.
- 1:24:24And the pitch coming down to Gilliam.
- 1:24:26Outside, ball free. Three balls in the strike. Win misses with the curve.
- 1:24:32Well Gilliam now steps out.
- 1:24:36Takes a look down to the third base coach.
- 1:24:40Pete Reynolds holding against the runner at first base.
- 1:24:44Pinson now looks into Gilliam and they kind of exchange the niceties of the afternoon and Win would like to be in on it.
- 1:24:51Takes off the first line from Yogi Barr.
- 1:24:54Now takes the second Pinson edges away.
- 1:24:57Three-one pitch with outside ball for and the National League has runners at second and first.
- 1:25:08So Junior Gilliam up there battling for Johnny Temple draws a lock.
- 1:25:15And Tim Boyer who was a very flinty and big star for the National League in 1956 in Washington not only with his great defensive play,
- 1:25:24but with his big crowd he's up there now. He's headless in two times at bat.
- 1:25:28He has not faced early Win. His two previous efforts were against the young right-handed Jerry Walker.
- 1:25:35So a fast man at second and a speed third first and the stretch now by Win with the outfield slanted around to the last.
- 1:25:40The first pitch coming down a fast ball over the outside corner for strikes.
- 1:25:45Win despite his many years in baseball can still reach back and blister one through there.
- 1:25:50Plus he is a cumulative fast knowledge of how exactly to work with these batters.
- 1:25:56Fletcher's once again looks back to the runner at second Pinson and deals one and is high on outside and it's one-on-one.
- 1:26:03One ball, one strike.
- 1:26:07Win the last half of the fifth inning and the excitement starts to build.
- 1:26:12As manager Fred Haney digs into his reserves and Casey Sangle goes for his and all of these all stars
- 1:26:20teaching his own right fine Major League ball player.
- 1:26:23One-one delivery. Half swing side to go. Check it. It's outside. Two balls and a strike.
- 1:26:28Breaking ball. Drop down and outside.
- 1:26:30Calabito who's taken over in right field is on a line in right center making a battle over in left center and back near the screen in left is Al Keyline.
- 1:26:41Now zone backed up along the line at third base and Appalachio deep at York.
- 1:26:46Foxy shaded over near second.
- 1:26:48The runners lead away now. Pinson at second junior Gilliam at first and early win ready with a two-one delivery.
- 1:26:54Pinson on the outside corner and it's two and two. Get that fast ball just above the belt over the outside corner.
- 1:27:00Two-two count with two outs. Two on and a big pitch coming up.
- 1:27:10Pinson now moves down the line from second. Gilliam again leads away from first and win with a strike.
- 1:27:16Pinson is ready. Fire to the batter. Five ball three. Three balls and two strikes. Time to get him to go for that high fast ball.
- 1:27:24The Boyle is having none of it and it's now three and two. A post out and a pressure mount.
- 1:27:34National League fans predominantly here in the Los Angeles Coliseum. About 50,000 of them.
- 1:27:41And of course we're just guessing. Second go now as early win takes a look back to the runners and there we go.
- 1:27:47The three to 50's. Now time for a four to make it to the loaded.
- 1:27:59Well early win now has the bases loaded and one of the most amazing young men in baseball today.
- 1:28:06Hey there, come along. So let's pick where all these gentlemen are at the moment.
- 1:28:13We got Peter Pinson over at third base. At second base is Junior Gilliam and Boyle is on at first.
- 1:28:22Mike Wilhelm going in the bullpen for the American League. Hank Aaron the batter.
- 1:28:27He has sacrificed with a five ball that's brought in a run and he's up to the third base and first pitch to him.
- 1:28:33He's outside and it's ball one.
- 1:28:40Base is loaded. National League coming up here in the last half of the fifth inning.
- 1:28:45Four hits for the American League, three hits for the National League and it's three to two with the American League leading.
- 1:28:50Here's the pitch coming down. Wings and fouls it off. Back on the screen and it's one and one.
- 1:28:59One of the amazing things about Hank Aaron is this youngster who's been a terror of the National League for so many years with his fine hitting.
- 1:29:06He knows our competition has never had an extra base hit.
- 1:29:10So that I'm sure is something of great concern to early win. He's mindful of it and he'll be working with extreme caution but with the bases loaded.
- 1:29:18How careful can you be? Base is loaded.
- 1:29:24There's a swing and a ground ball out of first base and taken by Pete Reynolds.
- 1:29:29That's all. As Hank Aaron grounds out to Pete Reynolds.
- 1:29:33One run for the National League and a lead off home run by Frank Robinson.
- 1:29:36There were no errors and three men are left on at the end of five for winning the score.
- 1:29:40The American League three, the National League two.
- 1:29:45We're going to have a new batterie now as we move into the top half of the sixth inning for the National League, Sam Jones.
- 1:29:52He has done an outstanding job for the San Francisco Giants who has won 14 games while losing 10 on the season so far.
- 1:29:59And his 14 victories equals his first winning year of his career.
- 1:30:03So now in the National League lineup we will have Charlie Neal at second base.
- 1:30:10Junior Gilliam will be at third.
- 1:30:15As a pitcher, Hal Smith from the Cardinals will catch and make him out of a base Jones. A pitch zone, a fast ball outside, ball one.
- 1:30:28Hal Smith working back of that play as Sam Jones gets set to go and he fires on the one ball delivery and he gets the strike over.
- 1:30:37Never forget watching the no hit game pitch by Sam Jones against the pitch strike pilot some years ago. Walk the bases, pull in the ninth inning then strike out the next three men.
- 1:30:45Filed off to the left and it is a one ball two strike count to Mickey Maddow.
- 1:30:50Maddow so far today got a single in the second inning when he pushed the box by the starting pitcher for the National League, Don Drysdale.
- 1:30:56He walked in the third so he's one for one. One ball and two strikes and we're playing in the top of the sixth inning.
- 1:31:02The American League leads three to two. Here's the delivery. Outside and it's two balls two strikes.
- 1:31:13Junior Gilliam at third. Ernie Banks at shortstop. Charlie Neal at second. Frank Robinson at first. The two to pitch. Outside ball three. Just missed with that one.
- 1:31:29Wally Moon is still in left field. Willie Mays is still out in right center and Mike Aaron is out in right field.
- 1:31:36So a full count to Mickey Maddow. Jones sets the three to delivery.
- 1:31:39Full on a drive to the right of the field. Going out there is Willie Mays. He's got it and now number one.
- 1:31:47Willie Mays makes it look so easy as he just drifts up there and he casually catches that ball.
- 1:31:53There's no indication that he's taking it easy. That's his great drive and ability of catching that ball.
- 1:32:00Rocky Colabido who has 31 home runs on the season. Strong right hand batter from the Cleveland Indians.
- 1:32:08Deep in the batter's box and Sam Jones who's no stranger to him used to be a teammate as fires a fast ball going outside. Ball one.
- 1:32:17Moon back near the shadow of the pension left field. Willie Mays over in left center. Deep in right is.
- 1:32:23There's a back ball for a strike. A beautiful pitch on the outside corner. One ball in one strike.
- 1:32:29Colabido comes over to the on-back circle where Frank Malzone has the rosin bag.
- 1:32:38Colabido took over from Roger Maric. Maric was hit with him two times in bat and Colabido is getting his first swing in the bat.
- 1:32:46Here's the one one delivery. A curve and he drives it deep in the left and it's foul.
- 1:32:50Make a souvenir out there for the folks.
- 1:32:54Thoughts one ball, two strikes.
- 1:32:59Colabido has developed a little trademark of flexing his back muscles which is just tapped back down in there.
- 1:33:09He sort of draws a beating point that bat out like a rifle at Sam Jones. Jones ready to throw that arm up there. Here comes the one two quicks.
- 1:33:16A side arm. Back ball outside. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:33:23Russ can check me on this. I don't think Jones ever comes down with the same pitch for the same batter in three times.
- 1:33:30Two two deliveries. Frank's been called as he holds a fast ball in the outside corner. That ball jumps over the corner and Colabido took it.
- 1:33:39So Sam Jones records the strikeout. That's the strikeout. Recorded by Max and Lake Pitches Bay.
- 1:33:44John Gladfield had five in his three innings. Conley worked two in the strikeout too.
- 1:33:48And Jones records one. There's two out in the bat and now Frank Malzone. His home run in the second inning.
- 1:33:54The American League back into a one one tie. Three to two American League. The Pitches Malzone.
- 1:34:00Texas swinging the ball. Drops outside and low on its ball one. One ball no strike.
- 1:34:10Gilliam guarding that foul on its third back up two or three steps. Jones set for the big motion. Fire's outside and it's ball two.
- 1:34:18That's the bad one. I'm fired up. Summer's taking a good look at it. Summer's a six over at the turn of the fifth inning from I'm fired up.
- 1:34:29Joukalki holds about the same size and the choice all of these men in blue have not only dedicated their lives to baseball but work at it every minute.
- 1:34:38There's a half swing but it catches the inside corner and it's like one.
- 1:34:44Jones trying to check his swing but that ball of Jones moved and caught the inside corner two and one two out. Nobody asked.
- 1:34:51Three runs on four hits. No errors for the American League. Two runs three hits. No errors for the National League.
- 1:34:56Then some fine pitching here this afternoon. Here's Jones with a two one delivery.
- 1:35:01There's a fly ball hit deep in the center field. Well he made a change. He's having a approach to best skills on ball.
- 1:35:07It's a good catch by Willie Mays like an end going up for a football catch and he makes the catch and that's all for the American League in the sixth inning.
- 1:35:15Nothing to cross and at the end of five and a half innings of play.
- 1:35:20Now in the middle of the sixth inning the score is the American League three the National League two.
- 1:35:26Here's what's in Nellie Park leaves the diamond and sure enough he went out of his way to touch third base.
- 1:35:31He's had these little two positions and most of them can't tell you why but there are many things they have good reasons for and that includes shaving the Gillette way.
- 1:35:39As Nellie's teammate Louis Apparecio puts it I never owned a smoother shaving razor than that Gillette adjustable.
- 1:35:45It's fast and comfortable. Yes comfort is the story for never before has it been a razor like the Gillette adjustable.
- 1:35:52You simply turn the adjusting dial to get nine different degrees of edge exposure and edge angle to fit your exact requirement.
- 1:35:59It's easy to find the setting for you. A turn to the left gives less exposure dial to the right for more blade edge.
- 1:36:06The Gillette 195 adjustable is the one piece razor changes blade instantly rinses clean back and it's so with this guarantee we guarantee the finest shave you've ever had of your money back.
- 1:36:17You fans have gone so for the 195 adjustable you may have a little trouble finding it.
- 1:36:21Over years I received the use of pie within a few days in Tim's family case with Gillette blue blade dispenser on the $1.95.
- 1:36:42I'm going to have a few changes in the American League now. You put it is white bull home of the Baltimore Orioles will help spend so many years working over there in the National League.
- 1:36:54We'll pitch first to Willie Mays and do a new catch of Sherm roller pop the foul over near the stand.
- 1:36:59Joe Pete Ronald trading his eyes right near the foul line. He's got it.
- 1:37:02The foul ball taken by Pete Ronald as Willie Mays goes on that hooker ball of white willow and found it off.
- 1:37:12Willow has had a rather incredible career with the former New York Giants.
- 1:37:16Now San Francisco Giants he worked for many years.
- 1:37:20There's an excellent relief for them and drifted in the American League.
- 1:37:27As banks playing and fouling it off back of the screen come Sherm roller. I don't know what it'll have a chance to win might bring it back in its out of play.
- 1:37:35Willow my guess you could say reached the height of his career last September 20th when he pitched a no run no hit game versus New York.
- 1:37:43One and nothing.
- 1:37:46So the American League now facing perhaps one of the most devastating home run it is in the National League or any bank. The man with the quick list or as Russ says as they say over in Chicago Mr. Everything.
- 1:37:57I feel around the left. Willhelm gives him a fluttering knuckleball it's over for Sykes and it's like two.
- 1:38:05No ball to Sykes.
- 1:38:10Next week he's out of the back and it's not hold to strike.
- 1:38:18Some folks say that all will have really needs to do to get warmed up as the manicures nails.
- 1:38:25But the knuckleball really jumped around and when White has good control of it which he usually does.
- 1:38:33He started off this year racking up nine straight victories. There's nothing in two six days of playing and he's playing this one out of fly ball deep in the center.
- 1:38:41He's got it.
- 1:38:43And he's back changing that net play to a fastball but he learns that the center field is two out of the sixth inning.
- 1:38:49Right.
- 1:38:51Two down and Frank Robinson who puts an estimate within a run of a tie. The American League is leading three to this is the last half of the sixth inning.
- 1:38:58Robinson hit a home run in the fifth inning. That one came off early when he walked in the second inning off Young Jerry Walker.
- 1:39:06The pitch is a fastball. Willhelm changing up and coming down with a fastball.
- 1:39:11About 90 percent of his deliveries are net plays.
- 1:39:15Ready now fires the right hand batter. This one way wide goes back.
- 1:39:20One ball and one strike.
- 1:39:31One and one two out nobody on.
- 1:39:36The American League leading by one run three to two the score. Willhelm's back with a one one set. There's a swing a solid back to the box back out of a second.
- 1:39:54And the hit to now even four feet. The American League got only two hits off Jerry Walker. There's young 20 year old right handed who left the ball game after three innings having allowed only one run stuck out one.
- 1:40:07And only two bases early when works the fourth and willhelm here working in the sixth inning.
- 1:40:17Left hand batting Wally Moon is up there over the first he's back safely. Frank Robinson the base runner first.
- 1:40:28Brian Jiren is throwing slow ball one.
- 1:40:34Brian Jiren up and throwing in the American League bullpen.
- 1:40:38The greatest danger for willhelm is with a man on one ball delivery. There's a swing and a five ball hit in the center field. Man will just be back to backing. He has room and he makes the chance to be up.
- 1:40:49So the sixth inning no runs one hit. There were no errors and one man is left on for the next league. And at the end of the sixth inning the score is American League three the next league two.
- 1:40:59Top of the seventh inning and for the American League facing Sam Jones will be the bottom portion of the lineup.
- 1:41:08Louis Apparicio is going to come up there.
- 1:41:12Imagine the folks around Oklahoma way are really singing the praises tonight of the young Jerry Walker.
- 1:41:18Everybody here both National League and American League just generally baseball fans. Youngster only 20 years old. There's only been an organized baseball for a few years coming in and doing such an incredible job.
- 1:41:30Millie O'Dell has joined Ryan Jiren in the bullpen. O'Dell the left handed from Baltimore Ryan Jiren the number one fastball releaser for the New York Yankees.
- 1:41:40And Sam Jones will try his luck here in the top of the seventh inning against Louis Apparicio. Little Louis has done just about everything you could ask for a ball player and more.
- 1:41:51He's been a really strong man. He didn't only box but she called the white box so far this year. Made incredible stops and has an amazing arm and can run.
- 1:42:01Swings the bat pretty well. Looks at a fastball outside ball one.
- 1:42:04Sam Jones working now for the National League. Diaseo Farad calmly in the fourth and Jones came on in the sixth.
- 1:42:11Next delivery. There's a strike. Jones who has great motion sort of pivots around on his right foot and kind of conceals his arm with a twist of his hip motion and then kicks that leg and brings that ball around.
- 1:42:23One ball and one strike. The delivery. Fastball. On outside. Two balls and one strike.
- 1:42:30On deck for the American League. Coming up as a pinch hitter is Tony Kubek. Two balls and a strike. Fastball outside.
- 1:42:40All three. So, like Wilhelm is going to lead. He did a fine job.
- 1:42:53Three one pitch. Swung on. Top foul. Coming over his house. This may have a chance forward. It is out of play. And it stands on the count of three balls. Two strikes.
- 1:43:02Nobody out. Apparicio leading off. This is the top of the seventh inning.
- 1:43:08Fans have seen some magnificent pitching by both sides today. And they've seen some fine defensive play and they have seen the power demonstrated with the home run.
- 1:43:18Apparicio stands in there. Fans flat footed about halfway deep. Now bends over to the way. Three two deliveries. Wow this one back. Count holds three and two.
- 1:43:31Kubek is just really getting back in the shape after a collision with Gail McTugel in a series some weeks ago.
- 1:43:47Two strikes. Apparicio away. There's an X-50. Tired to check his swing but Jones gets it over the inside corner for strike three.
- 1:43:54Apparicio becomes a strikeout victim. And for Jones that's his second. And nine strikeouts recorded by National Expecute.
- 1:44:04Tony Kubek comes up now at the bat for Royce Wilhelm. Tought a lot of the Billy O'Dell Ryan Duren for the American League in the last half of the seventh.
- 1:44:18First pitch is slow floating serve. There's a little hind inside. Ball one.
- 1:44:25Al Smith of the Cardinals working back at that plate. Sam Jones on the mound and moving in close to third is Junior Gilliam.
- 1:44:35Gilliam protecting against the slap on the left side of the infield has moved within about a step of the infield grass at third. The outfield playing straight away.
- 1:44:48Two balls and no strike. Jones that by the fastball down low ball three. Three balls no strike. The American League is leading three two.
- 1:44:59We're playing in the top of the seventh inning. Tony Kubek batting for Royce Wilhelm. Left hand batter strong. Wicks gets the strike.
- 1:45:07Three and one as Jones ups that good fastball right down the middle.
- 1:45:14Coaching at third for the American League. Harry Cuffillado Jettos the manager of Washington coaching at first. Three one delivery.
- 1:45:21Like you'll call he got another fastball. Well that Jones has lost that can get back in there and find that mustard seed and really spread it all over that ball. He can fire.
- 1:45:31And with his motion he makes that ball jump in there.
- 1:45:38Now pitching the Tony Kubek he's ready and comes down with it and he just missed outside ball four.
- 1:45:46So Kubek is on first walk given up by Jones. One up and Pete Reynolds about it. Reynolds about it we can go. He shifted over to first base.
- 1:45:59He has stuck out twice today. He's walked. He's a never been this man with that bat and only leads away. Takes a fastball hand outside ball one.
- 1:46:12One of the teams the American League took some slow motion pictures of Reynolds to show to the batters to show how he concentrates on the ball.
- 1:46:19Takes the strike and it's one one. They discovered with the slow motion films that Reynolds looked at ball and practically could read the signature of the person in the league if it came up there.
- 1:46:28Really concentrated on it.
- 1:46:30So the first by Jones. The ball gets fired Robinson and going the second is Tony Kubek. The ground roll holds him there as the ball bounces into the sand.
- 1:46:38Jones just fired that ball over to first. Now presumed with the San Francisco Giants the first baseman is probably always anticipating that throw.
- 1:46:48And that's not just head yet. So it'll be. And the first day of the ballgame is charged against the pitcher. Sam Jones on the floor with the last only two back to go the second.
- 1:47:00That feels straight away. One ball camp. Pete Reynolds about it one one. I was a curve and two balls in the track.
- 1:47:14Three to two. The American League is leading and they're threatening here in the seventh inning. Kubek with the long lead in second.
- 1:47:20Gilliam again with that left hand batter up there not far away from the back of third. A curve outside ball three.
- 1:47:28Part of the ball and thanks to him over to field. He fumbled it momentarily and they have got thanks for the matter.
- 1:47:36So it was all game going here until the seventh inning and two areas in a row. Now I have put the American League with runners at third and a runner third.
- 1:47:48One of those matches that bounced back through the box is Jones reached out with his bare hands. The ball was deflected just out of his fingertips and as bank had broken for the ball he had to sort of retrace his steps and reach for it and the ball just dipped off the end of his drop.
- 1:48:02So three to two. The American League lead and they now have a chance to add to their lead as Nellie Fox steps up there with one hit in two official times at back.
- 1:48:14Runners at third and first and only one out. Jones ready. Spins one. That's a little high on outside ball one. Gilliam right on the edge of the grass at third.
- 1:48:24Ernie Banks shaded over near second. Charlie Neal is backed up at second base and Reynolds of course the base on his first team held there by Robinson.
- 1:48:32One ball delivery. Jones flies out in the left field curving foul. That's little nally Fox during the regular season.
- 1:48:43Final magician with that net.
- 1:48:57The youngster has popped out of his fans to get that foul ball and the officer is not chasing him. There's no funny thing. He just wants to warn them that the baseball field is a diamond in south and it's in close years and time is extended strictly for the ball players and not for the youngsters.
- 1:49:17In the baseball people don't want to have a souvenir. They don't want to get killed if a line drives them back there and these youngsters are out in the field. One more one strike and that pitch is high and it's ball two.
- 1:49:28Two balls in a strike now. Nellie Fox about it.
- 1:49:35Charlie and three two and they're threatening to cook something up here with Tony Cuback the base runner third coming down the line. Ronald holding closest first. Jones ready to one.
- 1:49:47Ronald holds the second and coming in the store is Tony Cuback. Fox lined the shot by the pitcher and right out of a second base in the center field and L.R.P. she was throwing early in the ball game and up and throwing for the nice league.
- 1:50:05Nellie Fox drives in the run with a single and is hit number five.
- 1:50:15Well about an hour ago he's making his first appearance batting in the number three spot he took over for Ted Williams in left field.
- 1:50:22He had a home run in the first offside game in Pittsburgh this year and runners in second and first and he takes the fastball inside the back to the web or one.
- 1:50:30C.L.I.N. batting three twenty three. Suffered a complex factor earlier this year but has apparently recovered and he's ever dangerous.
- 1:50:45Jones ready fires down on the fastball it's blown outside ball two. Al C.L.I.N. of the Detroit Tigers finds out of high school moves right into the big league.
- 1:50:56Four to two the American League is leading this is the top of the seven. Jones and Cuback delivers the curve that's not so run it's two balls in a strike.
- 1:51:04Four hits a beautiful curveball. Jones starts it right at these right hand batters and then it just lands right over.
- 1:51:13Now field around to the left. Pete Ronald in second and L.R.P. Fox at first.
- 1:51:17There's a swing and a fly ball hit in the shallow center field coming in as Willie May's poised under and he's got it.
- 1:51:23Looks at basket under and made the grab on it. Throw in the second base and we have two out.
- 1:51:30C.L.I.N. is up there now. L.R.I.N. has certainly been a big iron man for the Chicago White Fox. He's taken over for Yogi Bear on the season batting two sixty five.
- 1:51:44L.R. very quiet. Dan's fairly deep in the batter's box and then just slightly at the knee. Jones sends a fast ball inside and L.R. backs away.
- 1:52:00Now field straight away. Four to two the American League is leading. Five hits for the American League. Four hits for the N.I.N. League and two errors here in the seventh inning have not helped the N.I.N. League.
- 1:52:10Sowing error by Jones. A deflected ball and an error charged the bank. Next pitch he takes the strike and it's one and one.
- 1:52:19Lauer commenting with Al Smith the catcher on the beauty of that pitch. Fun over there by Jones.
- 1:52:26Sam Jones known as the two six. One one delivery. Strike the third out first to the way to Robinson and Lauer is going for third. Keep Reynolds big for third.
- 1:52:40And throw it down to the first base and Frank Robinson hit him on the heel of the glove, bounced away from him and it'll be another error.
- 1:52:49Air charge to the first base from Frank Robinson. Al Smith threw a strike down there right over the back.
- 1:52:56And on the play Reynolds is allowed to go to third base and that's the third error for the N.I.N. League. Runners the third and first and Lauer sends in there.
- 1:53:06One two pitch to him. A curve outside. Ball two second.
- 1:53:14Oh Pete Reynolds sends out there at third. Melly Fox at first. Two balls to Frank. And ready now is Jones.
- 1:53:22Tins one that just misses outside. Ball three.
- 1:53:29Al Smith handling the catching for the N.I.N. League. Empire Bill Summers working back at the plate.
- 1:53:37Bill Jokowski who started back at the plate worked the first four and a half and has moved to third base.
- 1:53:42And it varies out of second.
- 1:53:44Pete still takes it on and Jones is outside ball four and the bases are loaded.
- 1:53:51Those fans Jones have given up their second walk.
- 1:53:55Lauer Fates is throwing out there in the N.I.N. League both ends and making Melly come up against fans Jones.
- 1:54:05Well this is a tough situation for Jones.
- 1:54:09That third base run on Fox is on second. That first base is Sham Lauer and the pitch seminal.
- 1:54:16Back ball over the outside corner of Scythe.
- 1:54:21American League leading four or two as the American League starts to pile up some potential runs here in three minutes on in two minutes.
- 1:54:30Jones ready fires on the one strike pitch. It's playing in a miss and it's strike two.
- 1:54:36All right.
- 1:54:42Tom Drivedale who started for the N.I.N. League sitting right down in front of us.
- 1:54:47He liked Jerry Walker. Very nice. Fine looking young man.
- 1:54:51Two strikes here at the bases loaded. Jones ready fires and a half swing and it is ball one strike two.
- 1:55:01Here's the official play dependence. Seventy four thousand nine hundred and eighty two wonderful baseball fans from all around the United States and especially out here in the West Coast.
- 1:55:14Watching these all start coming to Madel twins and slices of foul and the fans out in the field can hold one ball two strikes.
- 1:55:25Matter is Mickey Madel. Here's two outs.
- 1:55:33Van Jones in a very tough spot as the American League tries to break this ballgame wide open. Here's the one that's coming down to Madel.
- 1:55:41Two goody misses and that is all as Van Jones strikes up Madel.
- 1:55:47Second strike out of the inning and the seventh inning for the American League. They get a run. They have one hit.
- 1:55:54There are three National Leagueers and three men were left on.
- 1:55:58The middle of the seventh inning. The score is the American League for the National League too.
- 1:56:05Number two.
- 1:56:07Al Cailine has moved over to the center field and Tony Kubeck has gone out into left.
- 1:56:13So Mickey Madel has come out.
- 1:56:15O'Dell is the new pitcher for the American League. The left hander fires first.
- 1:56:20The right hander is Mading Tester, Hal Smith.
- 1:56:24Hit growth is starting to throw in the... I guess he's on the on-back circle.
- 1:56:29Hit, hit, one on, popped up back to second base. Moving over there is Nellie Fox underneath the ball and on the edge of the grass he's got it.
- 1:56:37So Hal Smith up there leading off to the National League last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:56:41Fox to Nellie Fox, one out.
- 1:56:45O'Dell working here in the last half of the seventh inning.
- 1:56:50And we're going to have a 10-fitter for Sam Jones.
- 1:56:55Dick Groves comes on the back foot Jones.
- 1:56:59Go to right hand batter where it's number 24.
- 1:57:02O'Dell fires a pass ball over the outside corner for his strike on the season.
- 1:57:06Groves is batting 263. He's a fine runner and he's picked up for the 15th double so far in the 1959 campaign.
- 1:57:14Pick, kill, and the dirt.
- 1:57:16As the Dells fires the breaks off the curve it's one ball one strike.
- 1:57:20Four runs and five hits, no errors for the American League.
- 1:57:23Two runs on four hits and three errors for the National League.
- 1:57:26Kyle McCrack, who's been one of the most amazing pitches in baseball this year, starting to throw in the American League ball fan.
- 1:57:34There's a line one hopper to Louis Apparicio.
- 1:57:37Wines it up, fires it over the first and he gets in.
- 1:57:39Ball starts off as a liner, dips a little bit, and a one hopper to Apparicio.
- 1:57:44He throws him out at first and he's two down.
- 1:57:47Billy O'Dell gets the first two men to face him and he brings up Junior Gilliam. He came up.
- 1:57:57And he goes back in the leadoff spot for the National League.
- 1:58:05O'Dell delivers the curve that he fouls back.
- 1:58:15Junior Gilliam.
- 1:58:18Up, deal around to the left.
- 1:58:20Tony Kubeck in left, Al Cailan has moved to center and Rocky Calabito's in right.
- 1:58:24With Malzón in third, Apparicio and Fox are played all the way at short and second.
- 1:58:28Fastball is low, one ball one strike.
- 1:58:32Two outs, nobody on. Four to two, the American League leading the National League.
- 1:58:41O'Dell delivers a fastball for a strike, one ball two strikes.
- 1:58:48O'Dell, a classy little left hand here, has a good fastball.
- 1:58:53He's just one of the group of promising young pitchers that Paul Richards has developed over at Baltimore.
- 1:58:58He fouled off, not a play.
- 1:59:03Well, it's one and two.
- 1:59:08Junior Gilliam, wearing number 19.
- 1:59:11He stands fairly well away from the play, and his back is the right-handed.
- 1:59:18That three-quarters deep in the batter's box.
- 1:59:21O'Dell looks him over and is ready and delivers on the one-two.
- 1:59:24There's a curve, tipping low and inside, ball two. Two balls, two strikes.
- 1:59:2754,982 here today.
- 1:59:31Fine turnout.
- 1:59:36O'Dell, set two-two pitchers, fouled off.
- 1:59:40And the count holds, two balls, two strikes.
- 1:59:47The fans have seen a lot of baseball.
- 1:59:53Two exciting battles for the fans in both leagues will resume tomorrow.
- 2:00:00O'Dell delivers on the two-two. There's a swing and a foul.
- 2:00:03Cutting back in the stands, another souvenir, and a count holds. Two balls, two strikes.
- 2:00:12Some five-bill summers, setting off that play.
- 2:00:21The ball on the ball game, the home run hitting, and the pitching has been the big story,
- 2:00:26has occurred low, and it's ball three. Three balls, two strikes.
- 2:00:33There's O'Dell. Young left-hand is firing toward the American League.
- 2:00:38Gary Walker started, worked three. Early wind came on on the fourth, worked two.
- 2:00:41O'Dell works one, and O'Dell works here in the seventh.
- 2:00:44Now, a kicker to left field, and it is point over to the home run.
- 2:00:51Over to the left field swing for the home run by Junior Gilliam.
- 2:00:53And it puts the national lead right back into the ball game.
- 2:01:02There's Gilliam, the first one over that fence after it.
- 2:01:12Gilliam has had no previous all-star record, but he has now as he whacked the home run.
- 2:01:17Here's Tally Neal. He has been picking on that fence a bit late.
- 2:01:23First pitch to him, as the ground ball hit down to the third base, and now Zones on the ball.
- 2:01:27Pitch it up, fires to first, and he's down at first.
- 2:01:30Now, Zones, Fumble, that ball, picked it up, fired over to Pete Ronalds in time to get the runner.
- 2:01:35And in the seventh inning for the national league, they get a run on one hit.
- 2:01:39There's no-one left on, and at the end of seventh inning to play, the score is the American League four of the National League three.
- 2:01:46The broad face will be the pigeon out for the National League.
- 2:01:50Diageal started calmly in the fourth, Jones in the sixth, and Pace, who has an incredible record,
- 2:01:55has 14 victories, no defeat from the season, has 19 in a row over two seasons.
- 2:02:00Surprising fellow to look at him.
- 2:02:02Russ, of course, has an opportunity to see him.
- 2:02:04He doesn't stand too tall. He stands about five-eighths.
- 2:02:07But he's a pretty fancy pitcher, and he's ready to pitch to Colomito.
- 2:02:10Delivered, there's a guard keeping the left field, and it is gone!
- 2:02:14That one will be about halfway up in the Coliseum.
- 2:02:16Go out to Colomito.
- 2:02:18It's a long drive.
- 2:02:20High in the sands of the left field area of the Coliseum to make it five-threes.
- 2:02:26Pace delivered one pitch, and Colomito hit it out of here.
- 2:02:35Five-threes now.
- 2:02:39There's the home run ball.
- 2:02:41Third home run hit by the American League so far today.
- 2:02:47One by Malzón, one by Yogi Berra, and one by Colomito.
- 2:02:51Frank Malzón on the batter. Pace ready. Delivered.
- 2:02:56As the ground ball hits the right side, coming in is Charlie Neal.
- 2:02:59Up with it first, or Alvinson, he's out at first.
- 2:03:01One out in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:03:11There are Royce Pace as a perpose that he calls.
- 2:03:15Has a big motion for a little man, and it looks like he's really blinding it with his dazzling fastball.
- 2:03:21He's got a good fastball, but he has a port ball, which I guess acts pretty much like a knucklehead, doesn't it, sir Russ?
- 2:03:27Roy up ratio looks at a pass ball for a strike.
- 2:03:33One out in the top of the eighth inning.
- 2:03:35The American League leading now five-threes.
- 2:03:37It's coming down to up ratio.
- 2:03:39Twins and misses, back two.
- 2:03:41William keeping his eye on up ratio, now dripped back with a two strike count on him.
- 2:03:48Up ratio, a fine runner.
- 2:03:50Willie Mays has moved Calo in left center.
- 2:03:53There's a fastball on inside. One ball to strike.
- 2:03:57Wally Mowin on in left field.
- 2:04:00Willie Mays in left center. Hank Aaron in right.
- 2:04:03William at third. Banks at short.
- 2:04:05Charlie Neal at second, and Frank Alvinson at first.
- 2:04:08Hal Smith handling the catching, and it's outside ball two, as he tried a fastball in the outside corner.
- 2:04:17We have had three homeruns for the American League, and we have had two homeruns hit for the National League.
- 2:04:28Faith looks him over.
- 2:04:29Aparicio Fengen there. The two-two delivery is fun, and it's a fastball outside ball three.
- 2:04:34Hal Smith with the arm cocked ready to fire.
- 2:04:36But outside, says Umpire Bill Summers, and the count is full. Three and two. One up.
- 2:04:52Faith from New York State.
- 2:04:56Looks in now. He's set to work. Comes down with a three-two delivery.
- 2:05:00Plung arm popped out into shallow right center field. Moving over as Willie Mays, he lets Hank Aaron take this one and end at bat number two.
- 2:05:07Alright, nicely. He gets quite an outfield after now with Wally Mowin in left, Mays in center, and Hank Aaron in right.
- 2:05:16Fine seed. Fine throwing arm.
- 2:05:20Two down, and about an hour of chronic cue-back.
- 2:05:23Two-back came up to bat for Wilhelm in the seventh inning walk.
- 2:05:30He laid his floor to run as three errors. He swings and misses on the fourth ball of strike one.
- 2:05:43Faith ready.
- 2:05:45Lines and fires, and he's grown outside. One ball, one strike.
- 2:05:49Five runs on six hits. No errors for the American League. Three runs on five hits, and three errors for the National League.
- 2:06:02Throwing outside ball two. Two balls and a strike.
- 2:06:05Conny Cureback batting here in the half of the eighth inning.
- 2:06:11Two balls, one strike.
- 2:06:19Next hit to swing and miss, and it's strike two.
- 2:06:29Two balls, two strikes, two outs.
- 2:06:32Two-two delivery as they swing the foul-pip on, to my catcher, Hal Smith.
- 2:06:37So it goes as a strikeout in the eighth inning. One run on one hit. No errors, and nobody left.
- 2:06:44And so at the middle of the eighth inning, the score is the American League five, the National League three.
- 2:06:53Licks power now takes over at first base for the American League, and Cal McCleary has come on to take over the fishing.
- 2:07:00Cal McCleary, representing the Cleveland Indians. Also from Oklahoma, we've had a lot of Oklahomans fishing here today.
- 2:07:07You can comment from Oklahoma, Walter from Oklahoma.
- 2:07:10Now McCleary, he's 116 while losing four. We'll pitch first to Hank Aaron.
- 2:07:14The first pitch to him, a strike for the Cures.
- 2:07:18Hank Aaron, one of the truly great ball players of the National League and in all of baseball.
- 2:07:25He's got 29 home runs so far this year, and he's been playing with that 400 mark all year.
- 2:07:32Now, field around the left for him, McCleary steals one, he swings, and he misses, and it's strike two.
- 2:07:37McCleary has perhaps one of the sharpest breaking serves in the American League, and also has a very sneaky fastball.
- 2:07:43That's the batter's up. He's got a good ball.
- 2:07:46He's been in the American League and also has a very sneaky fastball. That's the batter's up.
- 2:07:55He's ready now, working on a two-strike count, comes down with it, and there's a curve that's a little low, and it's ball one-strike two.
- 2:08:01Last half of the eighth inning, the American League leaves in the ball game by a score of five to three.
- 2:08:10McCleary's ready, fires. There's a curve outside, and it's two-ball two-strike. Hermolala grabbing that one.
- 2:08:16Frank Malzone, Lillie Apparicio, Nellie Fox have gone all the way so far in this ball game, and big power taking over at first base.
- 2:08:27Here's the pitch to him. He's got to swing on a slow-breaking curve, and it's ball three. Three-ball two-strike.
- 2:08:33Well, this is a very big pitch for the National League and the American League alike, even though there's a two-hundred differential.
- 2:08:40You get a man on, things start moving around. On Beck is Willi Mays. Here's the three-two pitch.
- 2:08:46Wings out, a bouncer down a ball zone, up with the ball. Fires it across the power. He's out. One away in the eighth inning.
- 2:08:53And Camilo Pascual. Three-side kick, Pete Ramos. Sides the throw on the bullpen.
- 2:09:05Pascual and Ramos have been certainly the two strong men of the Washington Picking Staff in very close to these many years.
- 2:09:13Ramos explaining today to us that they're concerned over in Washington about Pascual. He's about to very sore arm.
- 2:09:19Pitch coming to Willi Mays. Wings on, a bouncer to the third baseman. Now he's on on a big hot play as it goes. The first play, he's out.
- 2:09:27So McCoy gets to where the big head is of the National League to bounce out to the third baseman.
- 2:09:34And coming up now is Ernie Banks of the National League and Chicago Cubs. Banks did hit listen three times in a back.
- 2:09:43And that's unusual for this man with the great wrist. Two outs, picked by McCoy. Back ball, strike one.
- 2:09:59Here's McCoy's ready. Comes down with a one strike delivery. Just strikes two calls. Side to check but couldn't one-around.
- 2:10:11Now Taylor is out in left center field. Backed up in left is Tony Kubec in Rocky Coliseal in right center field.
- 2:10:17Now giving Banks all of that right field corner. Two strike delivery comes down as he tries to curve and it misses outside. One ball to strike.
- 2:10:25Two out, nobody on. Last half of the eighth inning. American League leading the National League five to three.
- 2:10:37Second delivery, outside and low and it's ball two. Two balls to strike.
- 2:10:48Banks is practically over at second base for Banks. They're taking it to Banks. He's going to pull that ball.
- 2:10:54Malzone guarding the line at third. Two, two pitch on the way. Wings at a curve and he misses strike three.
- 2:10:59Now McCoy comes in in the eighth inning and retires three of the big men for the National League and in the eighth nothing across for the National League.
- 2:11:07At the end of the eighth inning, the score is the American League five, the National League three.
- 2:11:13Big power at first base leads off against Roy Face in the top of the ninth inning.
- 2:11:17Face delivers, he hits the scribble on the first base line, taken by Robinson, steps on the baggies out.
- 2:11:22The ball is leading on the first pitch, got a hold of that fourth ball but dribbled it along the first base line, taken by Robinson who was able to grab the ball, step on first and it went out.
- 2:11:41Face came on and worked the eighth inning. Was met by, home run by Calabito, then put down the side and ordered.
- 2:11:47Nelly Park's about it, has two hits and three official times at bat. He's played the entire game, lined up by Face in the first pitch to Nelly.
- 2:11:56High outside ball one.
- 2:12:06Face looks in the house, and it's ready to work. And now the one ball pick. There's a swing there.
- 2:12:10Ground ball to the right side coming in for it is Carly Neal throws to Robinson, two out. Two up, two down.
- 2:12:20So Face has retired, and has five men to fake him. And Al Kline comes up there.
- 2:12:26Kline took over for Ted Williams, he's had one time at bat, hit a par ball in the center field.
- 2:12:33That field drips around just a simple two to the left. The American League leads five three, top of the ninth inning.
- 2:12:38Fits come down to Kline, swings about to the wrong fouls. Their baseline, Cercetti makes a nice stop on that one, throws it back over to Face.
- 2:12:49Cercetti looked in such marvelous physical trim, looks like he could take a glove and move out there and play.
- 2:12:57Face ready now, delivers to Kline, swings and fouls it back in its second.
- 2:13:05Five runs on six hits, no errors for the American League, three runs on five hits and three errors for the National League.
- 2:13:13The errors figured only in one run being scored. They came all in the seventh inning.
- 2:13:21Nothing in two-picks, one on, twice foul, going into the sand pounding right field.
- 2:13:27The shadows now started to drift out in the Coliseum, part of the left field area in the game.
- 2:13:33But it's been a truly beautiful day in California as Russ told you, not a cloud in the sky.
- 2:13:40No ball with two strikes, now Kline waiting as Roy Face gets set and deals on the two strikes hit.
- 2:13:46He takes and it's inside, gets the dip and it's one ball with two strikes.
- 2:13:53Sam Ball around, Dex. Face working carefully, Kline's got the power, one two deliveries, swings and fouls it one off.
- 2:14:05Count holes, that's one and two.
- 2:14:09We're on the last half of the ninth inning, the National League will have some big swingers coming along.
- 2:14:21Now Kline swinging that bat, here's the one two-picks, one on, foul, back, this one coming back out of play.
- 2:14:30So Kline distributing a few souvenirs around.
- 2:14:41If you've seen what's down to this game, there's seven new players in his lineup, started with a group of left handed.
- 2:14:51And it's been a battle, five, three, that's the short. Here's one two-picks, he fouls this one off.
- 2:14:59Kline, a very difficult man to fool.
- 2:15:03There's Roy Face working out there, but Face who has fooled some of the best hitters in baseball, trying to get out of this one with two out and nobody on.
- 2:15:12Deliveries and there's a swing and a miss, and that is strike three and that's all for the American League of the Ninth inning.
- 2:15:19Nothing is far, and at the end of eight and a half innings of play, short is the American League five, the National League three.
- 2:15:28Well, it's last half of the ninth inning, we'll be here as far as the nice league can send their last chance to get back into this one.
- 2:15:36Calvito pops out the right field, now Kline does back out the center, not the left field is Sonny Kubeck.
- 2:15:43Malzón and third up, we feel it's short, boxed, second power, first and Cal McLean comes out.
- 2:15:48Box, up, we feel Malzón, the only three-mile players in the American League to go all the way.
- 2:15:55The first league has had Aaron and Mays and Banks and Moon have gone all the way.
- 2:16:02So it's up to Cal McLean, man who started his baseball career in this National League, who himself admits that when he came out to the Pacific Coast Conference
- 2:16:11and learned to throw that good curveball, it helped him a great deal in his baseball career,
- 2:16:16and who last year moved into the kind of favorite role of an extraordinarily fine right-handed pitcher, has again repeated this year,
- 2:16:25and he's out there now working in the last half of the ninth inning.
- 2:16:32Well, but Frank Robinson, I'm sorry, the center-matter first baseman who has hit a home run in two times and bad is coming along.
- 2:16:41Robinson came on in the fifth inning, he's had two for two, a single in the sixth and a home run in the fifth.
- 2:16:47Now McLean's getting his first look at this big three-swinger.
- 2:16:52All right, the right-hand is set, the pitch coming down, he takes top five, ball one.
- 2:16:57Quick trying him with a fastball, five to three, the score, and that's making it two runs to tie it up.
- 2:17:06McLean's ready, and fires on the one ball pit, there's a strike for the curve.
- 2:17:12Goal at one and one.
- 2:17:21One ball and one strike.
- 2:17:26There's a smash, one-two, and a left-hand there, it's in there for a great hit, and Frank Robinson opens up the ninth inning
- 2:17:32for the nice league with a single in the left center, he's third hit of the day.
- 2:17:36Great hit off Carroll and three.
- 2:17:42And that's, he ends up the base, takes the piece.
- 2:17:46Nice league has had two home runs so far today.
- 2:17:50The American League has had three, and Walley Moon is up there now, a left-hand batter.
- 2:17:55Moon has gone all the way, lined into a double play, and a far more of a center field in his walk, and Smokey Burgess,
- 2:18:02on back for Pittsburgh, representing the Pittsburgh Pirates, and we're going to have some activity in the move then,
- 2:18:07hitting Raymores, goes to work once again for the American League.
- 2:18:11All right, the runner-first, Robinson leads away, McLean is ready to work, the pitch coming down, a 200-minute on a curve, back one.
- 2:18:19Well, the nice league fans here in the Coliseum in Los Angeles now moving to the edges of their seats,
- 2:18:25as a nice league team tries to pull itself together and get back into this when they fail by two.
- 2:18:31McLean checks on the runner, delivers a curve that's blown outside one-on-one.
- 2:18:36Here on Walley, of the American League White Sox handling the catchings, McLean's on the mound,
- 2:18:41now zone it's third after he feels it's short-cocks the second, and takes power at first base.
- 2:18:47That's from McLean, looks to the runner, the delivery.
- 2:18:51Down ball, foul off to the right, rolling over near the nice league dugout.
- 2:18:55Starts one ball and two sides.
- 2:19:00Nobody out, and the runner's first base.
- 2:19:11McLean's looking in, has the habit of popping that ball into his glove.
- 2:19:15Big Oklahoma lad takes the stretch, and the one-two delivery, back ball outside.
- 2:19:21Ball two, blown outside, is it left-hand battered?
- 2:19:25Walley Moons, who has delighted these Los Angeles Dodger fans who are in the tendon here.
- 2:19:34Back ball outside, ball two, blown outside, is it left-hand battered?
- 2:19:39Walley Moons, who has delighted these Los Angeles Dodger fans who are in the tendon here today,
- 2:19:47along with the rest of the baseball fans watching this game.
- 2:19:50Two-two-two, now to look to first, here she comes, foul, and it is two-and-two.
- 2:19:56Once hung on a curveball, just got a little piece of it, fouled it down at his feet.
- 2:20:04Multiburges, now the Pittsburgh Pirates on deck, and he's been a big man for those pirates this year,
- 2:20:10with sidelines for a while with a pox in hand, but he can swing that back, left-hand batter.
- 2:20:18Now I have to check my twist, to look to the run of the two-two-twist, outside, ball three.
- 2:20:25Trying to get him to go through fastball, and Walley Moons takes his swing, and it's a full count now, three-and-two.
- 2:20:31With Frank Robinson the base runner first, and the Imargamie leads by two-and-two,
- 2:20:36it's the five-to-three ball game. Each team with six hits, and that makes it committed three-and-two,
- 2:20:41the Imargamie has played her with ball.
- 2:20:45Not too straight away for the Imargamie, Calabio, Deacon, right, K-line, straight away in center.
- 2:20:50McLeese ready, fires on the three-and-two, here she comes, it's upside from all four.
- 2:20:55And the Imargamie is in the lead.
- 2:21:02So they have run as a second in first now for the National League,
- 2:21:07with Walley Moons drawing the base on ball, and moving Frank Robinson down the second.
- 2:21:14And Hal Smith is done a back from south.
- 2:21:21And that will undoubtedly back for the pitchers.
- 2:21:26Nobody out here in the last half of the ninth inning, the National League,
- 2:21:29with using the count itself out, is up there now with Hal Smith the right-hand batter.
- 2:21:33Runner's leading away, power looking for a month. Months at foul, trying to push it along the first base line.
- 2:21:38Big power driving in from first base, but the ball is fouled off.
- 2:21:43And yet Malzón, semi-anchored at third base, he's moved into the edge of the grass.
- 2:21:47The idea of course is to try and commit Malzón, get him to come in if they can,
- 2:21:52or get the runner over if they can.
- 2:21:56So that's what they're trying to do.
- 2:21:58McLeese trying to make it difficult for Smith to month that ball.
- 2:22:02Big power flying just off the edge of the grass at first, ready to drive in.
- 2:22:06McLeese with a stretch, the runner's edging away the pitches.
- 2:22:09Tires the bottom, he misses far, second two.
- 2:22:12McLeese, fire the pass ball, hummed it down there. Smith's time to reach it, the bottom, he misses for strike two.
- 2:22:21So the pressure amounts here in the last half of the ninth inning,
- 2:22:25as the tires of the National League come battling back against the stars of the American League.
- 2:22:30Not feel around to the left. Malzón even with the bag, has moved back a separate two.
- 2:22:36Power still flying a little wary right off the edge of the grass, McLeese stretches.
- 2:22:41The curve is inside and it's one-two.
- 2:22:49This has been a key-stop battle all afternoon.
- 2:22:51National League went out ahead with a run in the first inning,
- 2:22:53American League tied it up with one in the second, they got two in the third, and that's the way it's been going.
- 2:22:59Here's a one-two pitch, it's changing the net now.
- 2:23:01Back ball, back three.
- 2:23:05Throwing a play-kick to strike out.
- 2:23:09That's his second.
- 2:23:11Now tell me the fourth National League player that has stuck out today.
- 2:23:22American League players have stuck out for a long time.
- 2:23:25Mokie Burge is coming up, batting average on the season at 289, left-hand batter.
- 2:23:30I feel playing him straight away, collobita's over in the corner and right, the pitch coming down to him.
- 2:23:34When got, Ram Maldon goes to the first with a throw and he's out at first.
- 2:23:39He's going to go the second with a throw, but Foxy had to play deep and the three-person pick up with his left-hand batter could not get over inside the cover.
- 2:23:46And so Burge bounces out, but the runners move up, runners are second and save two there now, and it leaves it up now to Jilly Gilliam.
- 2:23:54Love Daly, knuckleball, pass ball, find a third ball, pick it from the center to the edge.
- 2:24:04So the tying runs are out on the bases. Two men out.
- 2:24:09Now Mokie Burge is hit the down ball on the left side, taken by Maldon, who could not throw the second, and had to go to first with a throw for the out.
- 2:24:16Two outs, Jilly Gilliam.
- 2:24:18Hit a home run. He's waiting now as the pitch from the plate comes down. If the curve is dropped, blow it inside.
- 2:24:25Ball one. Gilliam hit his home run with the right-hand batter.
- 2:24:30The batting left-handed against the right-handed counter-click.
- 2:24:34Potential tying runs on the bases. Robinson has third while he won the second.
- 2:24:38The pitch to Gilliam. Pitch, blow, ball, two, pick up.
- 2:24:42The out-match comes in. Go ahead, ball ten.
- 2:24:49One ball and one strike.
- 2:24:55That ball really jumped over there.
- 2:25:00One and one with two out and two on the pitch.
- 2:25:03Wings on the down ball right side, taken by Coward, a race for the Maldon. He's out with Coward's down first.
- 2:25:08So the American League wins the ball game five to three and in the ninth inning, no runs, one hit, no errors, and two men left for the National League.
- 2:25:17And the final score is the American League five, the National League three.
- 2:25:22Final score, American League five, run, pick, hit, no errors. The National League three, run, pick, hit, then three errors.
- 2:25:28In a moment we'll review the highlights of the game for you.

- 2:26:31Bob Neal, a great job of calling this game with the American League All-Star.
- 2:26:34He won by a score of five to three. Five runs, six hits, no errors. The three runs, six hits, three errors.
- 2:26:40What a day in the young career of Jerry Walker, who starts in his first big league game, 20 years old,
- 2:26:48and he has returned the winning picture of the day and the loser will be Don Drysdale.
- 2:26:54Don was tagged for the long home run by Yogi Berra, which put the American League on top three to one,
- 2:26:59and the National League never could quite catch up.
- 2:27:01Home runs on the afternoon, and there was only one that you could say was not really well tagged,
- 2:27:06and that was the home run by Frank Maldone early in the game,
- 2:27:09but real long well-op by Rocky Colovito, Yogi Berra, Frank Robinson, and Junior Gilliam.
- 2:27:14And this game at one time was just a fantastic dream, really came true.
- 2:27:19At 54,982, pay their way into the Los Angeles Califium to see the American League All-Stars and the National League All-Stars come to grips,

- 2:27:34as they jumbled their forces as well as they could, and came out with the type of baseball game that fans will continue to turn out to see.
- 2:27:43You'd have to signal out Gary Walker as the number one hero, the youngster,
- 2:27:46but it was a great team victory for the American League, and the two clubs are now, even on the season,
- 2:27:51the National League winning the first one and the American League winning the second game today by a score of five to three.
