- 0:00First word, you said, probably not.
- 0:02If you do, I'd love to talk to you afterwards because you've
- 0:05got quite the memory is very possible.
- 0:07You've been told what your first word was.
- 0:10Maybe it was mama or daddy or breakfast.
- 0:15I don't know what that first word may have been, but it did
- 0:20not take any of us. Probably very long.
- 0:23Once those first words started coming out for us to be able to
- 0:28string a couple of words together to Make a question
- 0:31because little children learn very early.
- 0:35The desire for asking questions. In fact, you've probably
- 0:40experienced with a child where they can take your name and turn
- 0:43it into a question. They come into your room, knock
- 0:46on your door mama. And so they're saying your name.
- 0:49But they've asked they said your name in the form of a question.
- 0:53It usually doesn't take us very long.
- 0:56Once we start learning to ask questions to start asking the
- 1:00question, why interview parents ever been asked a series of why
- 1:04questions by a child. That come from various and
- 1:08Sundry topics, that question, why?
- 1:13I want to thank just for a moment about Jesus asking a, why
- 1:16question in Matthew chapter 26 and verse 50.
- 1:19And he did not ask the why question because he needed some
- 1:24information. In fact, God never asks
- 1:27questions because he needs to learn information that he does
- 1:31not already know you remember, I believe it's the first recorded.
- 1:35Question in scripture Genesis chapter 3 and verse 9 where God
- 1:38is Walking, In The Garden, in the cool of the day and he calls
- 1:41out to Adam and Eve. Where are you?
- 1:43God not know where they were. Of course, he knew where they
- 1:46were. He asked that question for their
- 1:51benefit, not for his and they asked to follow up questions.
- 1:55And to Genesis chapter 3, verse 11 after they explained where
- 1:59they were and why they were where they were God, then asks.
- 2:04Well, who told you you were naked.
- 2:06And then question number 3. Have you eaten of the fruit that
- 2:10I forbade you to eat? And God already knew the answer
- 2:15to all those questions. So when God asked questions in
- 2:19scripture, he's not asking questions because he's needing
- 2:21to obtain some information that he does not know.
- 2:24He asks questions for the benefit of the person to whom,
- 2:29he's asking the question in the passages that were read for us
- 2:34this morning from John Chapter 13, brother Danny reading, those
- 2:39passages for us and then just a moment ago, the Reading from
- 2:44Matthew chapter 26 we knew we know very well that Jesus knew
- 2:50exactly who would betray him. He knew when he was going to be
- 2:55betrayed, he knew where he was going to be betrayed.
- 2:58He knew why he was going to be betrayed.
- 3:02And yet in verse 50 of Matthew chapter 26, Jesus asks, Judas
- 3:08friend. Why have you come?
- 3:11Was it for? Jesus need to understand what
- 3:17was going on. I don't know and we can
- 3:23speculate this morning and it's really not what we're going to
- 3:27do. Well, this morning, we can
- 3:28speculate the reason for Jesus asking this question and it may
- 3:33be, especially in the way. The question is introduced
- 3:38friend. Can you imagine how that would
- 3:41cut even to a heart of of a man like Judas where he knows?
- 3:48That he's doing this for all the wrong reasons.
- 3:52He knows that he is doing something, in fact, he admits it
- 3:55later on in that same chapter, Matthew chapter 26.
- 3:57He knows he is he has conspired against an innocent man.
- 4:06And maybe the reason for Jesus, asking the question on this
- 4:09occasion, is he wanted Judas to have one more opportunity?
- 4:16To come to his senses and make the necessary changes in his
- 4:21heart and his mind. Maybe it's Jesus in a show of
- 4:27love, in a show of compassion, in a show of Mercy.
- 4:31He has given Judas every opportunity Under the Sun to not
- 4:35go through with this. Most people when they know their
- 4:37cover is blown, if they are up to something that is no good.
- 4:41They'll kind of pause before they go through with it.
- 4:46And so in John Chapter 13, the reading that brother, Danny read
- 4:49for us this morning. Judas is cover is blown.
- 4:54Jesus says Judas. I know what you're going to do.
- 4:57And now what you're going to do. Please do quickly.
- 5:01Judas knew exactly what Jesus was talking about.
- 5:04He immediately excused himself from the table and went out to
- 5:07begin the process of betraying the Lord.
- 5:12His cover was blown. The one that he's going to
- 5:15betray knows, he's going to betray him and yet he is so set
- 5:22in his heart. For what he is set out to do
- 5:26that. Nothing is going to change his
- 5:28mind by. I'm sorry.
- 5:29I forgot to mention this. I'm just now looking down here.
- 5:31The invitation song is 538 538 will be our invitation song this
- 5:36morning after the lesson. And so maybe it's the Lord
- 5:44showing us his capacity to love to forgive his capacity, for
- 5:50mercy. And he's giving Judas just one
- 5:54more opportunity, one more opportunity to come to his
- 5:58senses and to think about the motivation behind what he is
- 6:03doing and that's the word. I want to spend a moment
- 6:05reflecting on this morning, that word motivation because God from
- 6:10the very beginning has always been concerned about motivation
- 6:16when it comes to serving and obeying him.
- 6:20Why We do what we do in every act of worship, where the cliff
- 6:26we were talking about this Wednesday night.
- 6:28And you mentioned, I think his brother Holland that you had
- 6:30heard talk about the, you just named the act of worship and we
- 6:35can look to a scripture that shows that God is interested in.
- 6:38Not just the What the how he's interested in the why?
- 6:43For example, with regard to our prayer life, you remember that
- 6:45great Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew chapter 6, beginning
- 6:47in verse 5 for about the next ten verses Jesus talks about the
- 6:50prayer life of his disciples. And he says, when you pray, I
- 6:54want you to consider your motivation.
- 6:55I'm just kind of summing up what he has to say in those few
- 6:59verses there in Matthew chapter 6.
- 7:01When you pray, don't be like the Hypocrites.
- 7:04And what does he go on? To say about the Hypocrites who
- 7:07love to have their prayers heard by men.
- 7:09They use these flower. We were flowery words.
- 7:12They stand and very, Places. And they say these, Meaningless
- 7:17hypocritical prayers because they're motivated by the
- 7:22impression that they're giving off to those that are hearing
- 7:24them. Pray.
- 7:26And so, Jesus says, when you pray remember what he says, go
- 7:29into your closet in this place of solitude, in this place of
- 7:32isolation where it's just you and God because at that point, I
- 7:35know what's motivating. You to pray this prayer.
- 7:40You're motivated by your relationship with the Father,
- 7:44James chapter 4 and verse 3. The Holy Spirit through James
- 7:47says, remember you ask and do not receive because you ask
- 7:51amiss that word, basically means you were asking with improper
- 7:56motivation so that you may spend it that it is the answer that
- 8:02you're hoping to receive from the prayers that you may spend
- 8:06it on your pleasures. So James is saying you ask you
- 8:10pray and you do not receive because you're not properly
- 8:12motivated When you pray to the father.
- 8:16So we can see, there is a why given to us when it comes to
- 8:19prayer, when it comes together around the Lord's table.
- 8:23It's not just the what? It's not just the emblems.
- 8:26Yes. They are important.
- 8:28Those emblems are extremely important.
- 8:30It's not just the water. It's not just the wind doing on
- 8:33the first day of the week. But what is the motivation?
- 8:37I appreciate it, brother Pete, taking our thoughts, to First
- 8:39Corinthians chapter 11. And when you continue a couple
- 8:42of verses past the verses that he reminded us of this morning,
- 8:46you see to two things that are happening when we commune with
- 8:50the Lord around his table. Where does earning the Lord's
- 8:55body? We're thinking about that body
- 8:57was brought that was broken. We're thinking about that blood
- 8:59that was shed. And while we're Discerning, the
- 9:01Lord's body. We are examining ourselves.
- 9:05And realizing how desperately me, how desperately we need that
- 9:09broken body in that shed blood. And so the motivation behind get
- 9:14around the table, is it just some ritual that we do?
- 9:18We've been doing in its habitual and our mind is not involved in
- 9:22it, or are we doing the, why this do?
- 9:26Why in remembrance of me? Discerning my son's body that
- 9:32was broken for your sin and examining yourself while doing
- 9:37so so that you can see why you so desperately needed him to do
- 9:41that for you giving second Corinthians 9:7.
- 9:46So let each one of you give as he purposes in his heart, not
- 9:49grudgingly or of necessity for God, loves a cheerful Giver.
- 9:52So, why are you giving are you giving because you feel
- 9:54obligated to do so, are you giving?
- 9:56Because you're expecting a blessing in return, or You
- 9:59giving cheerfully and what is the motivation behind that
- 10:02cheer, because you're so thankful for the way this is
- 10:06that God has provided for you over the previous week and you
- 10:08were want to return a portion of what he has blessed you with its
- 10:13thankfulness. Its gratitude, the why behind
- 10:16our giving is mentioned for us in Scripture.
- 10:20When we sing, we're told in First Corinthians 14 and verse
- 10:2315 to sing with the spirit to sing with the understanding.
- 10:28And what is it that we're supposed to be understanding
- 10:30while we sing? Well, for one thing, we're to
- 10:34understand the audience to whom that singing is supposed to be
- 10:37headed toward. Ephesians chapter 5, and verse
- 10:4019, singing, and making melody in your heart, to the Lord.
- 10:44That's where it's headed. We're not supposed to be
- 10:48entertaining ourselves. We're not supposed to be trying
- 10:51to show off. Our the range of notes that we
- 10:54can hit or the different parts that we can sing the design
- 10:58behind the singing. With the understanding
- 11:00understanding these words, realizing these words are
- 11:04intended to be a show of praise to the Lord.
- 11:09Colossians. 3:16 Says that we sing with Grace, in our heart to
- 11:12the Lord. So we're probably partially
- 11:15motivated when we sing. By our love for the Lord and
- 11:18what he has done for us. Lord, you are worthy of this
- 11:21praise. You are worthy of this honor.
- 11:24You are worthy of the time that we are spending in.
- 11:26Offering these words to you. The motivation behind our
- 11:31singing is important. The motivation behind our
- 11:35teaching and preaching Paul understood this.
- 11:38In First Corinthians chapter, 14 and verse 19 in the church.
- 11:41I would rather speak five words with my understanding that I may
- 11:45teach others also than ten. Thousand words in the tongue.
- 11:48Paul realized there would be no value to those to whom he was
- 11:53teaching. If he preaches in a tongue.
- 11:57There's no interpreter present for them to glean anything.
- 11:59From the words. He's saying if he's just
- 12:01speaking in a tongue so that he can show off the spiritual gift
- 12:05that he's been endowed with. He realizes, there is no value
- 12:07in that because God is not being honored and people are not being
- 12:12taught. And so, Paul says, I would
- 12:15rather say five words that make sense, that will bring someone
- 12:18closer to Christ than a thousand words in a tongue.
- 12:23Motivation, indeed is important to the Lord.
- 12:28And so now I want to bring this closer to home.
- 12:33Let's make some personal application this morning, and
- 12:35let's take the question that Jesus asked in Matthew chapter
- 12:3826, and verse 50. And let's not just look at
- 12:40Jesus, asking that question to Judas.
- 12:43I want you this morning for a moment to take that question and
- 12:49I want you to Envision Jesus asking that question to you.
- 12:52Here's the scenario. I'd like for us to consider for
- 12:55a moment hypothetical, because, of course, we can't see Jesus
- 12:58with our Earthly eyes in the way that they were able to in
- 13:02Matthew chapter 26, but I want you to imagine for a moment that
- 13:05Jesus had a has allowed us. He allowed us this morning to
- 13:10see him physically. We know he's here.
- 13:13With a spiritually. We know he is present.
- 13:16We just cannot see him with the limitations that we have with
- 13:20these Earthly eyes. Now.
- 13:22We should imagine for a moment that this morning.
- 13:26The greeter was Jesus in the flesh.
- 13:29And Jesus is holding out his hand and he's handing you the
- 13:32bulletin this morning. And his question is, is he
- 13:36shakes your hand friend? Why have you come?
- 13:40Why did you show up? It's at 408 Westbridge Street
- 13:44this morning. Why are you here?
- 13:49Why have you come? Now, I want you to take just a
- 13:53moment. Then in your mind.
- 13:54I want you to process the honest, because we know what is
- 13:58Jesus. He is a discerner of the
- 14:00thoughts and intents of the heart so you can try to give him
- 14:03what he wants to hear. But he's going to see through
- 14:06all that. And so I want you to think for a
- 14:09moment. What would be your honest
- 14:13reaction? Excuse me, your honest answer.
- 14:18To Jesus asking you upon your arrival at the church building
- 14:22this morning friend. Why have you come?
- 14:26Why are you here? Let me give you a few examples
- 14:30of what I hope. Our answer would not be.
- 14:34Number one, what I hope our answer would not be is.
- 14:37Well, I'm afraid I would go to hell.
- 14:40If I didn't show up for worship every Sunday that I can.
- 14:46Fear is an okay motivating factor early on in a
- 14:52relationship. I mean, parents isn't part of
- 14:56our relationship with our children when they are young.
- 14:58Isn't there a little bit of a fear factor involved in that?
- 15:03A fear of punishment, a fear of consequence for being
- 15:06disobedient. And probably If we're honest,
- 15:10most of us, especially if we were baptized at a relatively
- 15:14young age. We were probably motivated,
- 15:17maybe strongly to obey the gospel to be baptized because
- 15:22of, I don't want to go to hell. I'm afraid of the thought of
- 15:28going to hell, if I die before, I'm baptized, and for most of
- 15:32us, that was probably part of what motivated us to make that
- 15:36decision, but as we grow and as we mature in the faith,
- 15:40hopefully, none of our motivation to serve God.
- 15:43Whether it is showing up with his brothers, with his children,
- 15:47our brothers and sisters to worship him.
- 15:48Whether it's engaging in Acts of service, whether it is doing
- 15:52what we can to spread the gospel.
- 15:53Hopefully, none of that is Motivated by fear because what
- 15:57does John tell us in 1st John chapter 4, beginning in verse
- 16:0018, there is no fear in love, but perfect love, casts out fear
- 16:06because we're fear is, there is torment.
- 16:09He who fears has not been made perfect in love.
- 16:14John at this point in time, his come to such a maturity in his
- 16:18faith and his walk with Christ. John's not motivated to do what
- 16:22he does to make the sacrifices that he's making.
- 16:26To encourage the Brethren. Like he's been trying to
- 16:28encourage them to write through inspiration.
- 16:30The letters, he's riding. He's not motivated by a fear of
- 16:32condemnation. He's not motivated by a fear of
- 16:35going to hell. He's motivated by this perfect.
- 16:40Love. Jesus.
- 16:42I'm so thankful for what you came in.
- 16:45Did I am so thankful that you came in such a time where John
- 16:48could say we can't? But John could say the way that
- 16:51he opened his first epistle. First, John chapter one, the one
- 16:56that we've beheld, the one that we touched, the one that we
- 16:59heard the one that we looked upon.
- 17:05And so John was motivated by his love by his gratitude, by his,
- 17:09by his thankfulness. So as we grow and mature in the
- 17:13faith, we should be able to mature to a point where yes, you
- 17:17should a fear of Hell still still be there.
- 17:20It should be. We should when we think about
- 17:24hail. We should fear the the very
- 17:26thought of spending one second there, but that should not be
- 17:29what is motivating us in our Christian walk.
- 17:33We're being motivated by perfect, love by God's perfect,
- 17:38love for us, and coming to an understanding of what he has
- 17:42done for us and then realizing I just owe him so much in return.
- 17:46I can never repay him for it. I can never earn my salvation,
- 17:48but I just want to do what I can to show him how much I love him.
- 17:55Being motivated by love as parents, don't we appreciate our
- 18:00children doing what we asked them to do when they get to the
- 18:03point where they're no longer fearing the consequence if they
- 18:07don't. But they've come to just love
- 18:12and respect you as their mom or their dad.
- 18:16They appreciate all the sacrifices that you've made the
- 18:18ways that you've provided, the things that you've done.
- 18:21And so, the motivation has now turned into a love and a
- 18:25respect. Don't we, as parents loved and
- 18:29longed for that point, our relationship with our kids,
- 18:31where there's no longer a Fear Factor.
- 18:35It's what's involved in a relationship is motivated and
- 18:38fueled by a genuine love. Hopefully that would not be the
- 18:43way any of us would answer. Jesus question this morning.
- 18:46Number two. Because I feel obligated to
- 18:50worship on Sunday. I feel like it is my duty.
- 18:55I was raised in a Christian home and I got drugged to church
- 19:01every Sunday. And so I feel obligated to go.
- 19:04It's just, you know part of the routine.
- 19:08I've got to check off the Box. Hopefully, none of us are
- 19:13motivated by sense of obligation.
- 19:18Jesus knew that his disciples would not be able to last long
- 19:21with the Temptations and the struggles and the tribulations
- 19:26that he knew were going to be coming their way as his
- 19:29followers. He knew that a sense of Duty was
- 19:33not going to be enough to fuel them to go through all of those
- 19:36things. So that's why I said in John
- 19:3914:15 if you love me, keep my Commandments.
- 19:43I know you're going to be able to Keep On Keepin On, I know
- 19:46you're going to be able to deal with all the issues that are
- 19:48coming. Scuse me if you love me.
- 19:54If that's what your fuel is by. Then I know you're going to be
- 19:58able to handle all of these hardships, all of these
- 20:02difficulties, all these persecutions, if you're fueled
- 20:05by love, and not by obligation. If you love me, keep my
- 20:09Commandments. Do any of us?
- 20:12Get any real joy and satisfaction.
- 20:16Out of for those of us that have children for your children,
- 20:21doing something for you and they are only doing it because they
- 20:24feel obligated to do so, does that does that bring any kind of
- 20:29Joy satisfaction to the heart of a parent?
- 20:34It doesn't doesn't don't we understand how empty it is.
- 20:39When we know someone is doing something for us only because
- 20:42they feel obligated duty-bound to do it.
- 20:46We get no love out of, we get no satisfaction out of that.
- 20:48We get no joy out of that. God has made us.
- 20:54He's Puttin us. Some some things that are a
- 20:56likeness to him. And I believe that God has that
- 21:01same emotion. Where he gets, no joy, he gets
- 21:05no satisfaction out of people, doing things in his name, or for
- 21:10him that are strictly being done out of obligation or Duty.
- 21:15There's no mode. There is no joy that comes to
- 21:18the heart of our God. When we serve him in that way,
- 21:24hopefully, none of us this morning would have to honestly
- 21:27respond friend. Why have you come to Jesus a
- 21:30well? I know, you know, my heart, you
- 21:33know, my mind. I'm just gonna have to go ahead
- 21:34and say it because I you already know it.
- 21:36I felt duty-bound. I felt obligated to be here this
- 21:40morning. Number three.
- 21:44Hopefully, none of us would answer the question this way.
- 21:48Well. They're folks that expect me to
- 21:52be here. And if I don't show up, I'm not
- 21:55gonna be able to check off the box and then I'm going to have
- 21:57my care group leader calling or sending an email or a text.
- 22:00Hope you're okay. I've got family members that are
- 22:04members this particular congregation.
- 22:05And I know if I don't show up, they're going to think I'm sick
- 22:08or something's going on. So I got to get there.
- 22:11Make my presence known so that I don't have anybody breathing
- 22:15down my back trying to. Hopefully, none of us. show up
- 22:23to worship our creator, our Lord, Our Savior on Sunday
- 22:27because There's someone who's expecting us to be there and
- 22:34we'll be in a little bit of trouble if we have to come up
- 22:37with some excuse. Excuse me.
- 22:46You know, how you can know? If you're doing a self
- 22:49examination of how this is, not what motivates you to worship,
- 22:54your lord, is that you don't even think about.
- 22:57When you're out of town on a Lord's day as to whether or not
- 23:01you're going to worship with the sayings because all of a sudden,
- 23:04now, you're out of town. There's No accountability from
- 23:08those that. Know you, there's nobody, that
- 23:12knows you're in this particular Town.
- 23:13There's nobody that knows you were supposed to be there.
- 23:16There's nobody, you know, personally at the closest,
- 23:18Irrigation to where you were staying.
- 23:21And if you struggle At that moment, as to whether or not
- 23:27you're going to choose to worship with the Saints at a
- 23:29congregation closest to where you are.
- 23:33If that's something that you juggle, if that's something that
- 23:36you contemplate, if that's something that she's, I will
- 23:38should I should I not? Then whether you realize it or
- 23:42not, it may be. That that's part of what's been
- 23:45motivating. You all along.
- 23:48Is that your not? If your thought is, if it's the
- 23:52Lord's day, whether I'm at home, or I'm in Willow switch, Wyoming
- 23:58or I'm in Timbuktu. I'm going to find a Congregation
- 24:03of the Lord's people, and I'm going to worship with them and
- 24:05physically possible if that's your mindset.
- 24:08It doesn't matter where I am. If I'm healthy, if I'm able to
- 24:11time allows where you're not being restricted by health or
- 24:14whatever work. I'm going to be worshiping with
- 24:18the Saints. If that's something that you
- 24:22debate with, in your heart, in your mind, then it baby that
- 24:25you're struggling. With this, there are other
- 24:29people who expect me to be there.
- 24:32And so I better be so that the heat will be off.
- 24:36Number four. Hopefully, we never answer the
- 24:40question in this way so I can be entertained.
- 24:47So, I can be entertained. What is this?
- 24:52We're here together this morning.
- 24:53We are here for a worship. What service, right?
- 25:01Is service a word we use. When we are receiving something
- 25:06or a serve, as a word that we use, when we are giving
- 25:09something. Worship service.
- 25:14There's one audience member when we worship and that audience
- 25:18member is God. There is one, who is the
- 25:21beneficiary of what it is? Everything else that happens?
- 25:25Should we be stirred up on to love and good works when we're
- 25:28here? Yes, Hebrews 10 verse 24 says
- 25:30that we should. Should we receive some
- 25:33encouragement when we gather together as Brothers and Sisters
- 25:36in Christ? Well, if we're doing our job,
- 25:38yes, somebody somewhere should be encouraging us and as we
- 25:41should be doing for others. Should we be warmly greeted?
- 25:44Yes, if we're doing our job, sure.
- 25:46As we should be warmly, greeting others, there's some secondary
- 25:49benefits that come with gathering with the Saints, but
- 25:52those are secondary. The primary reason why we gather
- 25:57together to worship is to provide something.
- 26:00To the one who is the recipient. Of that worship the audience
- 26:06member being one, the audience member being God.
- 26:12If you've ever heard someone say as they're leaving a worship
- 26:16service, I didn't get anything out of that.
- 26:20Then you realize you are in the presence of someone who didn't
- 26:22realize why they were there to begin with.
- 26:26Worship is not something. We simply experience is not
- 26:30something that happens to us. Secondarily.
- 26:35Yes. Should we when we leave a
- 26:38worship service, feel edified feel encouraged, feel stirred
- 26:41up, feel more motivated to keep on keeping on.
- 26:43Yes, those things. We should be able to leave with
- 26:47especially if we are interacting with one another, the way that
- 26:50we should be interacting with one another when we gather
- 26:53together. So all those things should be
- 26:55happening. But they're not the primary.
- 27:00Reason for why we gather together.
- 27:03The primary reason is something different entirely.
- 27:09Number 5. Hopefully, none of us would
- 27:12answer. Jesus question friend.
- 27:13Why have you come with this response?
- 27:16Because attending worship is how I measure my faithfulness to
- 27:19God. My relationship with God, pretty
- 27:24much Rises and falls with. Whether I show up on Sundays to
- 27:28worship with my brothers and sisters in Christ.
- 27:30It's the main thing I do for God every week.
- 27:34I don't spend a whole lot of time during the week doing
- 27:36things for him. I don't spend a whole lot of
- 27:38time during the week studying his word.
- 27:40So I've really measure my faithfulness to God on showing
- 27:43up on Sunday. Hopefully, that is not the
- 27:45reason that any of us would give to Jesus Friend.
- 27:48Why have you come? That?
- 27:50This is Basically, the end-all-be-all of my
- 27:53relationship with you. Hopefully attending the worship
- 27:59of the Lord on Sundays Wednesday's.
- 28:01Whenever we gather together is just an example of our
- 28:07faithfulness to the lord. It's just one of the things that
- 28:11we do to show how much we love him to show how much we
- 28:14appreciate him to show how thankful we are for him.
- 28:18And for what he has done for us by no means.
- 28:20Should it be the end-all be-all the measuring stick?
- 28:24Sometimes we use a phrase and I think Well, intended, when we
- 28:27use it, sometimes there are people who become erratic run,
- 28:31faithful in their attendance to worship and we may say about
- 28:34that person. We need to get them back in
- 28:35church. Well, what we really need to do
- 28:40is get behind, what's motivating, them to lay out and
- 28:43figure out what we need to do, to try to stir them back up to
- 28:47loving the Lord. So that, that will be just one
- 28:49of the many examples of their faithfulness to the Lord.
- 28:52And that is their faithfulness in attendance to the worship
- 28:55Services of the Lord. Then finally this morning of the
- 29:01types of answers that I hope none of us would give to this
- 29:04question. Number 6.
- 29:07Because I'm seeking validation. It seems to me more and more in
- 29:13our particular culture. Among many, they are constantly
- 29:18looking. I think social media is kind of
- 29:20fueled this. To an unhealthy level.
- 29:23We're constantly looking for validation, for affirmation for
- 29:27things that make us feel good about who we are.
- 29:30We've even got songs that are sung pop songs that have been
- 29:34written recently. You were born this way.
- 29:36So however, it is that that you were behaving and acting.
- 29:39You were born this way. You were just following the
- 29:42impulses that you were born with your following, the sexual
- 29:45orientation that that you chose not what was assigned to you by
- 29:51the law. Word.
- 29:54And so, so much of our culture is obsessed with this looking
- 29:59for seeking validation affirmation.
- 30:03I want to feel good about who I am.
- 30:05I want to feel good about what I'm doing.
- 30:07I want to be accepted. I don't want to be judged.
- 30:12And unfortunately, some of that has filtered into the religious
- 30:15world where people are going and they're attending religious
- 30:19services and they're wanting to hear words of comfort words, of
- 30:23validation words of affirmation. And there's a place for that at
- 30:29times. There's a time and a place Rush
- 30:33together together and really encourage and make each other
- 30:36feel good and make each other feel loved.
- 30:41Is that the only thing we should be looking for when we gather
- 30:43together? As Brothers and Sisters in
- 30:46Christ, as children of the Living, God for affirmation what
- 30:51we really need to be looking for when we come as we are
- 30:56reflecting on, what God has done for us.
- 30:58Is we reflecting on what he has taught us through his word?
- 31:01What we really should be seeking his transformation.
- 31:05Not simply validation. Be not conformed to this world
- 31:11Romans 12:2, but be ye transformed by the renewing of
- 31:15your mind. That word that's translated,
- 31:18transform Romans. Chapter 12 to is the same word
- 31:21that is used in Matthew chapter 17 and Mark chapter 9, the two
- 31:27examples that we have of Jesus Transfiguration on the mountain,
- 31:31in the presence of Peter James and John.
- 31:34It's the word that we get our word metamorphosis from.
- 31:38What do you think of, when you think of a metamorphosis?
- 31:43Do you think of just some subtle alteration?
- 31:50Just just always, did you get your haircut?
- 31:52I can't tell for sure or not. No, we're not talking about a
- 31:59subtle change. We're talking to Metamorphoses
- 32:05where Jesus on that mountain was transfigured from that body,
- 32:08that he inhabited, while he was in the flesh on the earth, to
- 32:12his glorified state. Radically dramatically different
- 32:18from the appearance that he had held onto In the Flesh for some
- 32:2333 years. And so what God is calling for
- 32:27us to do is to be transformed. Look with me is as we start to
- 32:33wind down this morning. 2nd Corinthians chapter 3. 2nd
- 32:41Corinthians chapter 3, there's a very powerful illustration that
- 32:44Paul uses near the end of this chapter.
- 32:47About how God is supposed to change us.
- 32:53From our image to the image that he is calling for us to be
- 32:58beginning around verse 13. Paul takes them back to believe
- 33:01it's Deuteronomy chapter 29. You remember the what is
- 33:06described in that chapter where Moses?
- 33:09I think it's Exodus 29 where Moses received the law in your
- 33:13member and being in the presence of the Lord.
- 33:15His face shown to the point where it scared the nation when
- 33:21he came back down from the mountain.
- 33:23And they were scared to even look at him and because of that
- 33:26he would put a veil on his face until the effects of being in
- 33:30the presence of the Lord wore off physically speaking from his
- 33:33face. And so, Paul is talking a little
- 33:35bit about that issue with the veil and Moses wearing the veil
- 33:39and how he makes this. Analogy here where it's the veil
- 33:47in essence. He did the nation of Israel from
- 33:51being able to see the transforming power of the Lord,
- 33:55and how it was being revealed in the face of Moses.
- 33:59And so the people were not allowing the lesson from that to
- 34:02sink in. As it could have, we're being in
- 34:05the presence of God. Causes transformation.
- 34:10It causes a change. That is visible, not just
- 34:14internal, but you can see it in the person who's been changed
- 34:18after being in the presence of the Lord.
- 34:21And so there was a lesson really that was lost on the people.
- 34:24They didn't benefit as much from Moses encounter with the Lord
- 34:28and how it changed the appearance of his face because
- 34:30of the veil that Moses put on because of the fear that they
- 34:33had and looking at Moses in that state.
- 34:36Look with me in verse 16 of second Corinthians chapter 3.
- 34:39Nevertheless, when it shall turn to the Lord, the veil shall be
- 34:42taken away. Now, the Lord is that spirit and
- 34:45where the spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty, but we all
- 34:48with open face beholding as in a glass.
- 34:51The glory of the Lord are changed into the same image from
- 34:55glory to glory, even as by the spirit of the Lord.
- 35:00Here's what Paul is saying. Spiritually speaking, when we
- 35:03behold the Lord's face when we allow what he did for us to sink
- 35:08into our heart, when we meditate upon it.
- 35:11When we spend some time in meditating upon what his will is
- 35:15for our lives. What happens is we are changed.
- 35:18We are change Verse 18 into the same image from glory to glory,
- 35:22even as by the spirit of the Lord.
- 35:25It is a transformation that is visible to everyone who
- 35:30encounters us. And so what we should be seeking
- 35:34when we gather together in God's presence with his people.
- 35:39We don't need to be looking just for validation and affirmation.
- 35:44We need to look for what part of my life does.
- 35:48God still need me to transform. What kind of metamorphosis, what
- 35:55area of my life? Needs to be changed in such a
- 35:59dramatic way. Where everybody went around me
- 36:01will be able to notice. as we close this morning, I want to
- 36:06think about what the only acceptable answer to that
- 36:10question would be I want you to put yourself back out there in
- 36:13the lobby, Jesus, in the flesh is held out his hand friend.
- 36:18Why have you come? There's only one acceptable
- 36:22answer. Lord, cause you're here.
- 36:27And I love you. And where else would I be?
- 36:32There's the only acceptable answer to that question.
- 36:36Lord, I knew you'd be here. I didn't know, I'd get to see
- 36:38you in the flesh, but I knew you'd be here.
- 36:42I knew your people would be here.
- 36:44And because of how much I love you.
- 36:49Where else would I be? It's You Lord, my motivation is
- 36:55you. You're the reason why I'm here.
- 37:00I woke up this morning and I was grouchy and I wasn't feeling
- 37:03well. And physically speaking.
- 37:07I didn't feel like coming but my inner man, long to be in your
- 37:11presence. Because I know that's where you
- 37:15want me to be if at all possible, and I want to please
- 37:18you and so I want to be where you want me to be.
- 37:22The end of John chapter 6, when Jesus, preached that very
- 37:24difficult sermon. And most of that multitude
- 37:27thousands who had heard the sermon began grumbling and
- 37:30mumbling among themselves. These are difficult sayings who
- 37:32can understand it and many of them.
- 37:38It says, did not just leave on that occasion and come back
- 37:42later after, they had taken some time to process.
- 37:46The teaching is that they had just heard.
- 37:49What it says the end of John chapter 6 is they left never to
- 37:53walk with him again? You think Jesus knew?
- 37:59That the vast majority of that crowd as they left.
- 38:02We're leaving not just for that day, but for Lee, we're leaving
- 38:07for forever. So Jesus turns to his disciples
- 38:13around in verse 60. And following John chapter 6,
- 38:17you can almost feel the disappointment coming off the
- 38:19page when Jesus turns to his disciples.
- 38:21The 12, it seems to me that there's not many left other than
- 38:26them. And he says, are you also going
- 38:29to go away? You remember, Peter speaks up
- 38:34and says to whom shall we go? You alone?
- 38:39Have the words of life. Peter necessary, Lord.
- 38:47When he's asked, are you also going to go away?
- 38:50Where would we go? Is there a better place to be
- 38:54than with you? Are there better words to hear
- 39:00than the words that you've got to say to us?
- 39:03Is there better company to keep than the company in which we are
- 39:06in right now? Peter was answering his own
- 39:09questions when he had when he gave the answer.
- 39:14Lord to whom shall we go? There's nobody else.
- 39:17You're it. You're the one.
- 39:21You've got the words that are transformative.
- 39:25You've provided for us, a friendship.
- 39:27That is unparalleled. There's nowhere else.
- 39:32We'd rather be. So hopefully we ask ourselves
- 39:36this question friend. Why have you come wake up in the
- 39:38morning on the Lord's day? Any other opportunity that we
- 39:41have together together and Worship the Lord.
- 39:44What is our motivation? Because God is so concerned with
- 39:46the why? Why, why are you doing?
- 39:50What you're doing? Why are you saying what you're
- 39:52saying? Why are you going where you're
- 39:54going? Why?
- 39:58The only acceptable answer is going to bring a smile to the
- 40:01face of our savior for it. Where else would I be?
- 40:08It's the first day of the week. And your Saints are gathering to
- 40:14worship you. Where else would I go?
- 40:17Is there better company to key? Is there one with wiser words to
- 40:24give than you? Is the one who can offer me more
- 40:27than you've already given me. Where else would I be?
- 40:32Maybe there's someone here this morning.
- 40:34You're not a child of God. You've heard the word you
- 40:39believe it for some reason or another.
- 40:44You have hesitated, you have delayed.
- 40:47You have. Done what lot did for far too
- 40:52long, in Sodom and lingered in a place that you don't need to be
- 40:57outside of the saving blood of Jesus Christ.
- 41:01There is no hope. There is no words of comfort.
- 41:06That P can be given to someone outside of Christ.
- 41:09Should this life end in a moment by faith.
- 41:14You can repent of your sins confess.
- 41:16Jesus Christ, as Lord be baptized into Christ come out of
- 41:19that water and New Creation. Paul said, in Galatians chapter
- 41:223 and verse 27, for as many as have been baptized into Christ,
- 41:26have put on Christ your then wearing Christ.
- 41:29So that when we stand before the perfect god of the Universe on
- 41:34the day of judgment, he looks at us.
- 41:35He does not see our sins Saints in stained Soul.
- 41:40He sees his son for as many as have been baptized into Christ,
- 41:45have put on your wearing Christ so that God when he looks at
- 41:50that great multitude of On that day.
- 41:53I see my son. I don't see a sinner.
- 42:01Have you been walking in newness of life?
- 42:03If you are a child of God, maybe you've gone back to those old
- 42:07ways. Those old habits.
- 42:09Maybe your faith is grown cold. Maybe you need to renew your
- 42:15relationship with the Lord this morning.
- 42:16Maybe that's something you can do.
- 42:17Just between you and the Lord and your seat where you are.
- 42:20Maybe it's something that you would like to solicit.
- 42:23The prayers of your brothers and sisters in Christ.
- 42:25In your behalf of we can pray for you.
- 42:27Encourage you in any way, please come as Together.
- 42:29We Stand and sing.
