- 0:56story. Well, we're going to read the
- 0:58second chapter of Matthew, which will go through the story of
- 1:02some special visitors from the East, which is a wonderful part
- 1:06of our Christmas tradition that we love to celebrate.
- 1:10And even though this happened a little while after Christmas, it
- 1:12kind of get condensed as we celebrate this time of year.
- 1:16So settle in as we read this together and get our hearts
- 1:20ready to welcome that Saviour born on Christmas Day in only
- 1:26four short days time as we read together.
- 1:29Matthew, chapter 2. Jesus was born in Bethlehem in
- 1:45Judea during the reign of King Herod.
- 1:49About that time some wise men from eastern lands arrived in
- 1:54Jerusalem asking where is the newborn king of the Jews.
- 2:00We saw his star as it rose, and we have come to worship him.
- 2:06King Herod was deeply disturbed when he heard this, as was
- 2:10everyone in Jerusalem. He called the meeting of the
- 2:12leading priests and teachers of religious law and asked where is
- 2:17the Messiah supposed to be born? In Bethlehem in Judea, they
- 2:21said. For this is what the prophet
- 2:23wrote. And you, O Bethlehem and the
- 2:26land of Judea, are not least among the ruling cities of
- 2:30Judah. For a ruler will come from you
- 2:33who will be the shepherd for my people Israel.
- 2:37When Herod called for a private meeting with the wives men, and
- 2:41he learned from them the time when the star first appeared.
- 2:44Then he told them, go to Bethlehem and search carefully
- 2:48for the child, and when you find him come back and tell me so
- 2:54that I can go and worship him too.
- 2:57After this interview the wives men went their way and the star
- 3:01they had seen in the east guided them to Bethlehem.
- 3:05It went ahead of them and stopped over the place where the
- 3:07child was. When they saw the star they were
- 3:11filled with joy. They entered the house and saw
- 3:15the child with his mother Mary and they bowed down and
- 3:19worshipped him. Then they opened their treasure
- 3:23chests and gave him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
- 3:28When it was time to leave, they returned to their own country by
- 3:32another route, for God had warned them in a dream not to
- 3:36return to Herod. After the wise men were gone, an
- 3:41Angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream.
- 3:44Get up, flee to Egypt with the child and his mother, the Angel
- 3:49said. Stay there until I tell you to
- 3:52return, because Herod is going to search for the child to kill
- 3:56him. That night, Joseph left for
- 3:59Egypt with the child and Mary his mother, and they stayed
- 4:03there until Herod's death. This fulfilled what the Lord had
- 4:08spoken through the prophet. I called my son out of Egypt.
- 4:13Herod was furious when he realized that the wise men had
- 4:16outwitted him. He sent soldiers to kill all the
- 4:19boys in and around Bethlehem who were two years old and under.
- 4:24Based on the wise men's report of the star's first appearance,
- 4:28Herod's brutal action fulfilled what God had spoken through the
- 4:32prophet Jeremiah. A cry was heard in Rama, weeping
- 4:37and great mourning. Rachel weeps for her children,
- 4:41refusing to be comforted, for they are dead.
- 4:47When Herod died, an Angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to
- 4:50Joseph in Egypt. Get up, the Angel said.
- 4:55Take the child and his mother back to the land of Israel,
- 4:58because those who were trying to kill the child are dead.
- 5:03So Joseph got up and returned to the land of Israel with Jesus
- 5:07and his mother. But when he learned that the new
- 5:10ruler of Judea was Herod's son Archelaus, he was afraid to go
- 5:16there. Then after being warned in a
- 5:18dream, he left for the region of Galilee.
- 5:22So the family went and lived in a town called Nazareth.
- 5:26This fulfilled what the Prophet said.
- 5:29He will be called a Nazareian. Jesus, give us moment to pause.
- 5:47Give us quiet times in the next coming days as we approach
- 5:51Christmas. To settle our hearts and to open
- 5:56them to you. To open them to the incredible
- 6:00gift of you. Of your birth.
- 6:04Of you coming miraculously from your heavenly form to this
- 6:12vulnerable little baby, putting yourself in our way in the midst
- 6:18of us so that we could not miss you, so that we could know who
- 6:23you are and what you're like. Thank you, Jesus, for this
- 6:30incredible gift of yourself to us.
- 6:36We love you and we just treasure you and all that you do for us.
- 6:43As we approach this special time of celebration.
- 6:47We pray all of this in your wonderful name.
- 6:51Amen.
