Latest / Kenny Wallace Media / Joey Logano Explains Why He Wore Blatantly Illegal Gloves
Transcript
- 0:00Jenna Fryer AP NASCAR showed us your glove today, and it was.
- 0:05Geez, Jenna, you know we put it on the pole.
- 0:07You want to talk about that first or do you want to go
- 0:09straight to that? Were you wearing the glove
- 0:10today? Are.
- 0:13You wearing the glove at the Daytona 500?
- 0:15He's wearing my gloves, my SFI gloves.
- 0:18Roger said that he spoke to you and he was very disappointed in
- 0:22that. It looked very blatant to us.
- 0:25When the team comes to you and says wear this glove, you just
- 0:28say OK. I mean, yeah, you know, it's
- 0:34kind of how a lot of things work and you know, as a driver you,
- 0:38you know, you you work with the team and hey, I'm going to take
- 0:42a portion of responsibility of that too.
- 0:44Obviously, I should I put the glove on?
- 0:47You know, it said I didn't build a glove and go make it on my
- 0:50own. I can't sew, OK.
- 0:55So yeah, I mean that's what it was and you know, we have
- 0:58conversations about it. What I'm proud about his team is
- 1:01that, you know, yeah, that was a tough situation for us.
- 1:03It's hard to go through and embarrassing for sure.
- 1:07But the fact that we got through it and just move on and and
- 1:12focus on the next week and we show that we have some speed in
- 1:14our race car and be able to put it on the pole here kind of says
- 1:18to me is a statement type lap. So proud of that.
- 1:21I did that. I honestly had motivation.
- 1:22But does this does it make this pole mean any more?
- 1:25The fact that you went out there and had speed without, we assume
- 1:30any sort of. I got plenty of motivation,
- 1:33really. Ever since you said I wasn't
- 1:34going to make the playoffs this year, I've had plenty of
- 1:36motivation. OK, so I'm I'm a good, I'm in a
- 1:38good place. And you know, the thing about
- 1:43the glove is they say, well, you know these things aren't tested
- 1:46for fire retardant and stuff like did you do you feel like
- 1:49you put yourself in a sort of unsafe?
- 1:51No position, No. I I personally did not.
- 1:55If if I ever, you know, I wouldn't ever put myself in a
- 1:58situation where I feel unsafe. I have kids.
- 2:00I have a wife. I have a family that I care way
- 2:02more about than race cars. And yeah, no, I feel concerned
- 2:07about what we did. I didn't race with it.
- 2:09So qualifying on speedways is pretty simple, Jeff.
- 2:14It's it's one thing to come out and have super Speedway poles,
- 2:17but to do this at first downforce check, I mean with the
- 2:21the the new car, are you surprised that you expect this
- 2:24to happen? I didn't expect it.
- 2:27When I saw our short run speed in practice, I was kind of like
- 2:30this this might not be where we need to be.
- 2:32We we showed that we had a great long run speed.
- 2:34Our second run we made an adjustment, went back out and
- 2:36was like oh wow, we're like really competitive car's driving
- 2:39pretty good so I felt good about that.
- 2:41But our short run like fire off, we weren't real fast.
- 2:44We weren't far up the board and then barely made it through the
- 2:47first round, you know, just by the skin of our teeth there.
- 2:51But and then be able to, you know, make some adjustments.
- 2:55I was proud of what Paul and and the guys were able to do, to be
- 2:58able to make it adjustment the car driving closer to perfect
- 3:02and for the second round and be able to put it up here.
- 3:04I really didn't think after the first round we had a chance of
- 3:07putting it on a pole, so I'm proud of the adjustments that we
- 3:12made there. So we got some work to do
- 3:13tonight for sure. But the first pit stalls, nice.
- 3:17Obviously starting up front for the Pencil 400 in the Pencil
- 3:19Mustang, huge for our race team. So that makes dinner tonight a
- 3:23little bit easier for me. So it's good.
- 3:27And then we'll fire off tomorrow and hopefully get a bit more
- 3:30short run speed and we can make our long runs really good.
- 3:34What's that? Yeah, Yeah.
- 3:38All right. We have time for two more.
- 3:40Joey's got to get up to the Fox booth, so we'll go there in the
- 3:43middle. Got three in the middle, Reed
- 3:46and then Jerry. Good.
- 3:47Brian Twining bets Words Media Group.
- 3:49Joey, we saw you do this last year and then we all know how
- 3:52the race went. How optimistic are you about the
- 3:54new body style and what you got to see in the very limited
- 3:57amount of practice time that you guys will have the long run
- 4:00speed to maintain track positions?
- 4:02Yeah, we're we're still uncertain of what the the new
- 4:06dark horse Mustang will be like. You know, it's really
- 4:11challenging to unload at a track like Vegas with limited practice
- 4:17where you can't change many things, right?
- 4:18We can't go to throwing springs and stuff at this car and you're
- 4:21going off of really not much like physical notes with this
- 4:27car, some of what we had last year.
- 4:28But the Arrow numbers are different with this car and
- 4:32you're putting a lot of trust into what the wind tunnel
- 4:35numbers spit out and how much of it's real and how much of it is,
- 4:40you know, fabricated or different.
- 4:41You know, like there's a lot of, there's a lot of what ifs
- 4:44between SIM world, wind tunnel world to reality is a lot of
- 4:48things that can be different. So really hard to make those,
- 4:51those changes to your car and getting that balance right.
- 4:53And so it took us a couple runs obviously to do that.
- 4:56We still got a lot to learn with the car, but yeah, good start
- 5:00for sure. Reed Spencer with the NASCAR
- 5:02wire looked like the wind picked up quite a bit for the second
- 5:05round and it also looked like from the ghost car that that you
- 5:10rolled one and two really well and that that that's that's
- 5:13where you had the advantage of everybody else.
- 5:16Yeah gosh I I got to think it's wind that made the difference
- 5:21because the first run I was pretty slow through one and two
- 5:25all the way through the corner sounds like man I I only thing
- 5:31you think of the change for for straightaway speed wasn't our
- 5:33change if we're no means it was going to have to bend by the
- 5:36wind maybe they had a big gust a first run or something that held
- 5:39me back a little bit because that just doesn't doesn't seem
- 5:43to make sense. We were really good through one
- 5:46and two on the second time. The first time we're, we're
- 5:48horrible through there. So you're wide open either way,
- 5:51right? So the only variable there is
- 5:53really the wind. Jared Jordan kicking the tires
- 5:55on it while I was going to ask about the wind, but I'll go to
- 5:57my backup question I I talked to Brad earlier and he said the
- 6:00glove likely probably doesn't have that big of a deal, but it
- 6:04might make people feel better. Is it more important to feel
- 6:06better than than to worry about the glove site situation?
- 6:10I didn't feel better after it, I can tell you that much.
- 6:13So it's directionally better. How much better?
- 6:16Probably nothing. That's the part that hurts the
- 6:18most. It was even worth it.
- 6:20So yeah, it it didn't do anything to speak of.
- 6:23It's directionally an area that everybody goes to try to, you
- 6:27know, block that, that whole, you know, you see everyone put
- 6:31their hand there. We just try to cover more space.
- 6:34All right. Joey, congratulations on this
- 6:36poll. Good luck tomorrow.
- 6:37Thank you.
