- 0:00Speaker 1: Football at 4 time at 1231 on a Tuesday. A
- 0:04Speaker 1: special Football at 4 powered by the Inside the Birds podcast.
- 0:07Speaker 1: And it is brought to you by the Fanatic Sportsbook
- 0:09Speaker 1: at Ocean Casino Resort in Atlantic City.
- 0:12Speaker 2: I heard a great crowd over there for the Eagles
- 0:13Speaker 2: last night.
- 0:14Speaker 1: And probably a big crowd today for the Phillies and
- 0:18Speaker 1: the Braves. But let's take a look at what happened
- 0:21Speaker 1: last night.
- 0:22Speaker 2: An absolute beatdown by the Bears tonight.
- 0:28Speaker 1: Let's get Adam Kaplan's takeaways from the Eagles' loss against
- 0:31Speaker 1: the Bears. He joins us now for a special football
- 0:33Speaker 1: at four here on the Sports Bash. Adam, well, we
- 0:36Speaker 1: stayed up late, and that was not worth our time.
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah, Mike, it was not the way I thought it
- 0:43Speaker 3: would go. Look, I got that one wrong. I picked
- 0:45Speaker 3: the Eagles to win it. But what you can't know is,
- 0:49Speaker 3: and we knew this was going to come at some point,
- 0:52Speaker 3: how Dennis Allen, defensive coordinator for the Bears, would adjust
- 0:54Speaker 3: to what the Eagles did offensively in the first two
- 0:56Speaker 3: games at I would throw a lot of intermediate area
- 1:00Speaker 3: over the middle where the Bears took that away, and
- 1:02Speaker 3: Sean Manion did not adjust to the adjustment. That was
- 1:05Speaker 3: a big problem there. And after the run game was fantastic,
- 1:08Speaker 3: they finally broke out the running game. It was great
- 1:10Speaker 3: in the first half. Absolutely pathetic, Mike, just to explain
- 1:15Speaker 3: how bad their offense was in the second half. Less
- 1:18Speaker 3: than 70 total yards in the second half, which is
- 1:20Speaker 3: particularly embarrassing. When the defense knows you have to throw,
- 1:24Speaker 3: like they're playing off coverage, or like, you know, go ahead,
- 1:26Speaker 3: we're trying to get up anything deep. And the Eagles
- 1:29Speaker 3: still couldn't do anything. They dropped linebackers and coverage. You
- 1:32Speaker 3: saw what T.J. Edwards did to them. And a former
- 1:35Speaker 3: Eagles linebacker and hurt struggle to read what they were
- 1:38Speaker 3: trying to do. And, I mean, 41 yards in the
- 1:40Speaker 3: passing game, the second half was an absolute embarrassment. Really bad.
- 1:44Speaker 3: And also, Mike, we should mention Braden Mann was not
- 1:46Speaker 3: as good. Braden Mann had a couple punts he'd probably
- 1:48Speaker 3: like to have back.
- 1:49Speaker 2: Well, let's look at this.
- 1:50Speaker 1: Do you see a regression in this passing game? We
- 1:52Speaker 1: thought it was actually moving forward. Is it going backwards?
- 1:56Speaker 3: Yeah. i'm not going to say that yet it's a
- 1:58Speaker 3: fair question because it was terrible last night in the
- 2:00Speaker 3: second half uh... what what we want to see when
- 2:04Speaker 3: they play the ramps this week in philly is now
- 2:08Speaker 3: that you have this blueprint okay hurts now it's becoming
- 2:12Speaker 3: a much better timing passer now that a defense takes
- 2:15Speaker 3: that away from what's the second act here for only
- 2:18Speaker 3: for hurt not only for hurts but for sean manning
- 2:21Speaker 3: the first year play callers only now called it the
- 2:23Speaker 3: place for three games what's his adjustment to the adjustment
- 2:27Speaker 3: Getting backs involved. Well, we know that the Eagles are
- 2:29Speaker 3: the worst screen team in maybe the history of the
- 2:31Speaker 3: National Football League. They're pathetic. They're bad. Mike, I've been
- 2:35Speaker 3: railing all this on your show for at least three
- 2:37Speaker 3: years now. Right when you think they can't get to
- 2:40Speaker 3: a new low, they achieve even a lower low. I mean,
- 2:44Speaker 3: they're a little... You heard the Mendoza line. They're half
- 2:47Speaker 3: of the Mendoza line, which is to... If you don't
- 2:50Speaker 3: remember Mario Mendoza. They're terrible at that. I don't like
- 2:55Speaker 3: to be one of those people who says it's predictable,
- 2:57Speaker 3: but when you see this orbit motion, it's okay. With Lemon,
- 3:02Speaker 3: we kind of know where this is going to go
- 3:04Speaker 3: because they've done it. They've just reversed the way that
- 3:06Speaker 3: they've done it each week. Well, the Bears snuffed it out.
- 3:09Speaker 3: And the other thing is, Mike, and Jeff and I
- 3:11Speaker 3: talked about this on our postgame show, the Eagles receivers
- 3:14Speaker 3: and tight ends blocked terribly for that play. Just embarrassingly bad.
- 3:18Speaker 2: Adam, they had Zach Ertz out there blocking. I know.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I know. Well, look, he's out there. You have to.
- 3:24Speaker 3: He's a tight end, but that's not good.
- 3:26Speaker 2: Well, if he's out there, then you don't call that play.
- 3:28Speaker 3: I guess, Mike. This is where I mentioned this also
- 3:33Speaker 3: on our show today. This is something that's totally inside football.
- 3:35Speaker 3: This is a little bit higher level. But I've got
- 3:38Speaker 3: this from coaches over the years. Sometimes, like a head coach,
- 3:42Speaker 3: he's what's called a senior offensive assistant because he's an
- 3:44Speaker 3: offensive coach. They don't have one. Sirianni was, as we
- 3:49Speaker 3: were told when he was hired in 21, was thinking
- 3:51Speaker 3: about it. And then he decided not to do it,
- 3:54Speaker 3: and that's been a mistake. And they need someone to
- 3:57Speaker 3: get Manion and Sirianni and say, hey, look, I'm looking
- 4:00Speaker 3: at this. It's just something to keep an eye on.
- 4:03Speaker 3: Because they did not adjust last night. They think they
- 4:05Speaker 3: only had one scoring drive. But I know Dallas Allen's
- 4:08Speaker 3: really good.
- 4:09Speaker 2: And they got lucky to score on that drive.
- 4:11Speaker 3: I know. It was incredible. You don't give her that.
- 4:14Speaker 3: That was awesome, by the way.
- 4:15Speaker 2: He was great on that drive.
- 4:18Speaker 3: That was an awesome job by Hurts. Great job. But
- 4:21Speaker 3: Mike Dennis Allen, look, he's great. He's a top-five defense coordinator.
- 4:26Speaker 3: They're a very average, talented team. We broke this down
- 4:29Speaker 3: with Greg Cosell on our pregame show. They're not very talented.
- 4:33Speaker 3: But they executed well defensively in the Eagles. This is
- 4:36Speaker 3: not good. So to move along here, Chris Shula, who's
- 4:40Speaker 3: the defense coordinator for the Rams, look, we know he's
- 4:42Speaker 3: not going to have Myles Garrett. That's a big deal.
- 4:45Speaker 3: But he coaches very, very well. They did a really
- 4:47Speaker 3: good job against the Rams, by the way. They did.
- 4:50Speaker 3: excuse me, against the Broncos Sunday night. That's not why.
- 4:53Speaker 3: It was not about their defense. They had some bad penalties,
- 4:58Speaker 3: untimely penalties. Some would question some of them. But the
- 5:02Speaker 3: bottom line is, Mike, now Sean Mannion has to adjust.
- 5:06Speaker 3: This is his first bad game. He's going to have
- 5:08Speaker 3: to adjust to what they were doing.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Run game. They come out 72 yards in the first
- 5:12Speaker 2: half from Barkley. What happened?
- 5:15Speaker 3: The block is domestic, and I love the velocity. Once
- 5:18Speaker 3: Barkley made the zone cut, He saw it, and he went.
- 5:22Speaker 3: And this was the first time. The esteem penalty was legit.
- 5:24Speaker 3: He hooked the defender. The sad thing about it, Mike,
- 5:26Speaker 3: it had nothing to do with the success of the play.
- 5:29Speaker 3: But when you hook your arm, they're going to call it.
- 5:31Speaker 3: They have to call it. And that took away another
- 5:33Speaker 3: big run, so he would have had over 100 yards
- 5:35Speaker 3: probably for the first half, Mike. That's amazing. So the
- 5:38Speaker 3: second half, Mike, they did blitz the run a little bit.
- 5:42Speaker 3: They crowded the middle. I didn't think Barkley was as
- 5:45Speaker 3: patient as he was, as he was in the first half.
- 5:48Speaker 3: And they took that away. And then obviously, Mike, You
- 5:52Speaker 3: can't run the football when you're behind so far. I mean,
- 5:55Speaker 3: they just were too far behind, and they had to
- 5:56Speaker 3: throw it. And also, Mike, look, they got ball control.
- 5:59Speaker 3: The thing that shocked me, Mike, is they didn't ball
- 6:01Speaker 3: control with the run game. Yeah, the Bears ran the
- 6:04Speaker 3: ball better on the second or first half that you
- 6:06Speaker 3: could shut them down. Their pass game was their quick game,
- 6:09Speaker 3: control the clock. And we'll get to defense in a second.
- 6:12Speaker 3: That was the story, is they were able to, with
- 6:14Speaker 3: their short passing game.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Applin football at four here on the Sports Bash.
- 6:19Speaker 1: You talk about they could not sustain the run game
- 6:21Speaker 1: and a lot of that offensive line issues.
- 6:24Speaker 2: Juergens, what do you think?
- 6:30Speaker 3: Here's the thing. Their combo blocks are really good in
- 6:32Speaker 3: the first half. We're going to talk to Greg Cosell today.
- 6:35Speaker 3: We taped the Inside the Tape show. So we're going
- 6:37Speaker 3: to ask him specifically what happened in the second half
- 6:39Speaker 3: about the run blocking. But in terms of, I don't
- 6:44Speaker 3: think that's what Willie Lampkin in there. We're way too
- 6:46Speaker 3: early for that. First of all, they're 2-1-1. They certainly...
- 6:51Speaker 3: Drew Kendall has actually been a nice surprise. He's been great.
- 6:53Speaker 3: He hasn't been perfect. Far from it. But he's been okay.
- 6:56Speaker 3: But this is a brand new scheme. Let's not forget.
- 6:59Speaker 3: They've never run this type of scheme. So you've got
- 7:02Speaker 3: to give it a little bit of time here.
- 7:03Speaker 2: Yeah, I know.
- 7:04Speaker 1: By the way, I thought Kendall played pretty well last night.
- 7:06Speaker 1: He was the one guy that looked like he had
- 7:07Speaker 1: a solid night.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I thought he did a good job. We want to
- 7:10Speaker 3: ask Greg for what he saw.
- 7:13Speaker 2: But.
- 7:14Speaker 3: They have to get the timing down. Now, the good thing, look,
- 7:17Speaker 3: they've only run the ball well for two of them.
- 7:18Speaker 3: That's not good. But at least they know it works now. And, look,
- 7:24Speaker 3: Aaron Donald's coming to town. We know that Donald's not
- 7:27Speaker 3: the same player he once was, but he's still going
- 7:28Speaker 3: to be in the Hall of Fame. He still knows
- 7:30Speaker 3: how to play. I'm looking forward to seeing what the
- 7:33Speaker 3: Eagles are going to have new. I'm really curious to
- 7:35Speaker 3: see how Sean Mannion regroups and his offensive coaches regroup
- 7:39Speaker 3: after this game. This was an abomination. To have seven points,
- 7:43Speaker 3: I'm sorry, no points in the second half, that's bad, man.
- 7:48Speaker 1: And you talk about Mannion, I mean, the tight end
- 7:51Speaker 1: spot was an issue last night. I mean, we talked
- 7:53Speaker 1: about Ertz, but I just couldn't get anybody open or
- 7:55Speaker 1: throw a pass to Johnny Munt, you know, as a
- 7:58Speaker 1: safety valve. I mean, and it seems like if this
- 8:02Speaker 1: offense doesn't have a solid pass-catching tight end, and I
- 8:05Speaker 1: talked about this with Jeff yesterday, who's the third option
- 8:08Speaker 1: if that tight end is not a part of this?
- 8:10Speaker 3: Mike, well, Makai Lemon had a couple nice plays last night,
- 8:13Speaker 3: no doubt about it. The 16-yarder especially. Excuse me, 19-yarder.
- 8:21Speaker 3: He is the slot receiver. That's why they're playing a
- 8:22Speaker 3: lot of personnel, which means three receivers, one back, one
- 8:24Speaker 3: tight end. Now, part of it's because Goddard's not playing.
- 8:28Speaker 3: But if you're going to play that much 11 personnel,
- 8:30Speaker 3: you need more explosive plays. Now, Wicks was much less
- 8:34Speaker 3: of a factor. Both were nice plays. On your point, Mike,
- 8:38Speaker 3: they've got to get more out of the receiver group now.
- 8:41Speaker 3: Hollywood Brown didn't play because of that late-week ankle injury.
- 8:45Speaker 3: Not that he's really played a lot of receiver, but
- 8:46Speaker 3: they need explosive plays. They've got to get him healthy.
- 8:49Speaker 3: Elijah Moore did play last night. He was invisible. They
- 8:53Speaker 3: need another tight end, Mike, badly. By the trade deadline,
- 8:56Speaker 3: we're not surprised if they add one. They don't have
- 8:58Speaker 3: a choice right now. Without Goddard, Mike, they are sunk
- 9:01Speaker 3: at tight end.
- 9:02Speaker 2: All right, let's go to defense. Last night, no sacks,
- 9:05Speaker 2: no turnovers.
- 9:06Speaker 1: You know, that's the first time that that has happened
- 9:10Speaker 1: since the 2021 Week 9 game against the Chargers, that
- 9:15Speaker 1: the Eagles have done this in a regular season game.
- 9:17Speaker 1: No sacks or a takeaway in the same game. That's
- 9:20Speaker 1: what happened last night. They're not getting enough pass rush.
- 9:23Speaker 3: They're not, and they did up their blitz percentage. Godard
- 9:26Speaker 3: looked really good and explosive, Mike.
- 9:29Speaker 2: And Keenan was 11 for 11 against it.
- 9:31Speaker 3: I know, but, Mike, he looked good. The one pass,
- 9:34Speaker 3: which I couldn't believe– The way he threw across his body, like,
- 9:38Speaker 3: Bernard beat his man badly. It's when you say, great job. Like,
- 9:43Speaker 3: if you play tennis like I do, when someone hits
- 9:45Speaker 3: a great shot against me that I can't defend, great job. Hey,
- 9:48Speaker 3: you did a great job. The run defense overall was
- 9:52Speaker 3: very good. They got a little tired, I think, from
- 9:54Speaker 3: being on the field. Weather, by the way, is not
- 9:56Speaker 3: a factor. No excuse there. But how about Jordan Davis play?
- 10:00Speaker 3: with it more? Or Jomo? That surprised me.
- 10:02Speaker 2: You wondered if Jomo got.
- 10:04Speaker 1: He had a couple penalties.
- 10:06Speaker 3: Well, the bad one, obviously, was the fourth down. That's inexcusable.
- 10:11Speaker 3: And overall, the ten penalties, that can't happen.
- 10:14Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 10:15Speaker 3: That was bad, Mike. The ten penalties. It was good.
- 10:18Speaker 3: I mean, very under control. Guys have got to be smarter.
- 10:22Speaker 3: I mentioned the hook on Steen. You can't do that.
- 10:25Speaker 3: I don't care what the result of the play was.
- 10:26Speaker 3: It's irrelevant. You cannot hook the player. Woolen, one of
- 10:30Speaker 3: them definitely was a foul. The other one was you
- 10:32Speaker 3: could go either way. Woolen, as Jeff mentioned, to start
- 10:37Speaker 3: our off-season shows, Woolen led the Seahawks in penalty yardage
- 10:41Speaker 3: last year. Total penalty is bad. That's bad. It can happen.
- 10:45Speaker 3: This is why the preseason means nothing to me, or
- 10:48Speaker 3: in this case, the off-season, it means very little. It's
- 10:51Speaker 3: what happens when the real games start, when you actually
- 10:53Speaker 3: have to play the right way. And Wollin and Kew
- 10:57Speaker 3: were fine the first two weeks, but they got tested
- 10:59Speaker 3: this game, and particularly Wollin, and he's got to do better.
- 11:03Speaker 3: But the scheme got them. You've got to give Ben
- 11:05Speaker 3: Johnson credit. This is interesting. I got my next-gen stats
- 11:08Speaker 3: stuff this morning. Case Keenum threw the ball the quickest
- 11:13Speaker 3: in the National Football League, 2.41 seconds per attempt. That
- 11:17Speaker 3: was done purposely to get the Eagles' pass rush, and
- 11:19Speaker 3: I've got to say it worked.
- 11:20Speaker 2: Sure did.
- 11:22Speaker 1: And obviously Keenum looked like a guy who trusted what
- 11:25Speaker 1: he was taught and what he was coached up. Hey,
- 11:27Speaker 1: throw the ball here. The guy will be open. He
- 11:29Speaker 1: saw pressure. He got rid of it. Threw to spots.
- 11:31Speaker 1: Guys were running open. I've been saying it for three weeks.
- 11:34Speaker 1: People haven't been agreeing with me. I think Jihad Campbell stinks.
- 11:37Speaker 2: He doesn't stink.
- 11:39Speaker 3: No, he doesn't stink.
- 11:40Speaker 1: Well, so far he's made zero impact and looks like
- 11:43Speaker 1: he has no instincts.
- 11:46Speaker 3: Okay, so instincts I'll tell you I agree with. It's
- 11:48Speaker 3: not that he has no instincts. He is so new
- 11:51Speaker 3: to this position. And it's just he's not there yet.
- 11:55Speaker 3: And there's a reason with the preseason. The coaches are
- 11:58Speaker 3: telling you that he's not ready. He needs more work.
- 12:02Speaker 3: You're going to have to be patient. He missed a
- 12:03Speaker 3: significant time last season. He's relatively new to playing linebacker.
- 12:07Speaker 3: It's a work in progress. Boy, they missed the Kobe Dean.
- 12:09Speaker 3: They missed A.J. Brown, no matter what the fans think.
- 12:12Speaker 3: As I told folks when they yelled at me, they
- 12:15Speaker 3: need someone to take away double teams. They need someone who...
- 12:20Speaker 3: somehow could lift coverage. They don't have that guy. Look,
- 12:24Speaker 3: Devontae's a great football player. Don't get me wrong.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Unbelievable catch he made last night, by the way.
- 12:28Speaker 3: That was great. Great adjustment on that play, on Jalen
- 12:31Speaker 3: Johnson was. But overall, Mike, they're still 2-1. How about
- 12:36Speaker 3: the Rams opening at minus 1.5? It's now minus 3,
- 12:39Speaker 3: so everyone's betting the Rams right now.
- 12:42Speaker 1: Eagles get the home game, and it's a noon game,
- 12:45Speaker 1: so you get that benefit there. If you win... and
- 12:47Speaker 1: can beat the Rams. You knocked them to 1-3 early
- 12:50Speaker 1: in the season. That would be a big-time win for Philly.
- 12:54Speaker 1: We'll get into that one later on this week. We've
- 12:56Speaker 1: got football at 4 early tomorrow as well with the
- 12:59Speaker 1: Phillies game. But Adam Kaplan was kind enough to join
- 13:02Speaker 1: us at an early edition of Football at 4 here
- 13:05Speaker 1: on the Sports Pass. The Eagles lose last night, and
- 13:07Speaker 1: it was an ugly one, 27-7. Thank you, Adam.
- 13:09Speaker 2: You got it.
