Transcript
- 0:07Speaker 1: This media podcast. Welcome to Meat Eater Trivia, the only
- 0:11Speaker 1: game show where conservation always wins. I'm your host, Spen
- 0:15Speaker 1: to New Arton. Today we're joined by special guest Dr
- 0:19Speaker 1: Grace Surdivant. In addition to her, we also have Steve Brody,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Janice Chest, Your Seth cal and Maggie Smith. Now, Grace,
- 0:27Speaker 1: how do you feel about Trivia? Under prepared? Underprepared? But
- 0:32Speaker 1: it's going to be a great time. Okay. I like
- 0:34Speaker 1: that attitude. Now, if you're not familiar, Grace, this is
- 0:36Speaker 1: a ten round quiz show with questions born out of
- 0:39Speaker 1: meat eaters for verticals what you're hunting, fishing, conservation and cooking,
- 0:44Speaker 1: And there is a prize. Meat Eater will donate five
- 0:47Speaker 1: dollars to the conservation organization of the winners choosing. So far,
- 0:50Speaker 1: we've met Steve when six times, Brody went for Jhannice
- 0:53Speaker 1: win three, and Clay Seth, Corin Chester and Dustin Hoff
- 0:57Speaker 1: have each one once. Now I have an update for you,
- 0:59Speaker 1: Steve on scorekeeping. Well, you're not gonna like this update either.
- 1:05Speaker 1: I was trying to solicit listeners to help us gather
- 1:09Speaker 1: some data on Meat eat Trivia, but before that episode
- 1:12Speaker 1: even published. Since it's weeks away from going out, I
- 1:15Speaker 1: had somebody reach out who had already taken the liberty
- 1:17Speaker 1: upon themselves to do that anyway. So they have been
- 1:20Speaker 1: gathering how many each person has gotten right when we've
- 1:24Speaker 1: gone into overtime, what people's win percentages, how much people
- 1:27Speaker 1: have donated to certain organizations. It is coming along nicely.
- 1:31Speaker 1: It's not ready yet, but you're gonna be blown away
- 1:33Speaker 1: by all the data we have. What I'm not like
- 1:35Speaker 1: about that can give him a little preview that gave me.
- 1:38Speaker 1: We will. We'll start trickling out some of this information
- 1:40Speaker 1: over the next few weeks. But one of the most
- 1:42Speaker 1: important data points that we have so far is correct
- 1:45Speaker 1: answers per round and Brodie is winning about he actually
- 1:54Speaker 1: did included in the spreadsheets each time Steve makes a complaint.
- 1:59Speaker 1: There was one episode were you were really on one.
- 2:01Speaker 1: I think you had twelve complaints more than one question
- 2:07Speaker 1: averaging question, but then other episodes you only had like
- 2:10Speaker 1: two or three. So I think we should have backtrack
- 2:13Speaker 1: figure out what happened to you that morning, or or
- 2:15Speaker 1: what happened the night before, if your kids got in trouble,
- 2:18Speaker 1: what their grades were, and then we might be onto
- 2:21Speaker 1: something there. So the data is coming along nicely. I
- 2:23Speaker 1: don't need anybody else to reach out to the mediator
- 2:25Speaker 1: inbox because we have our official statistician. No, that's great,
- 2:29Speaker 1: thank you? Who is that? Can you tell us that
- 2:32Speaker 1: not yet? More? More coming soon? Now? Today's episode is
- 2:35Speaker 1: going to be a little bit different. That's because this
- 2:37Speaker 1: episode drops on June twenty nine, which is one day
- 2:41Speaker 1: after we release the first episode of season two of
- 2:44Speaker 1: Pardon My Plate, four days after South gets married. This
- 2:48Speaker 1: has nothing to do with that, but I like that now.
- 2:52Speaker 1: If you're not familiar, Parton My Plate is the show
- 2:54Speaker 1: I host on our YouTube channel where we cook critters
- 2:56Speaker 1: that most folks assume are inedible. So to celebrate the
- 2:59Speaker 1: new season, every question today is going to have something
- 3:02Speaker 1: to do with the animals we eat on Pardon My Plate.
- 3:06Speaker 1: That means each of these questions is going to have
- 3:07Speaker 1: a tie to carp, coot, coyote, muskrat, crow, bobcat, goldfish,
- 3:13Speaker 1: or skunk. Don't worry. I know what you're showing all,
- 3:16Speaker 1: but I don't think you described it well. It's not
- 3:20Speaker 1: that people widely regard to be inedible. There is a
- 3:22Speaker 1: spirited debate about the edibility, and usually it falls on
- 3:28Speaker 1: the end of the spectrum though that says they are inedible. Yeah,
- 3:31Speaker 1: but it's generally the thing where people is generally where
- 3:34Speaker 1: people comment on the lack you know, I mean, like,
- 3:37Speaker 1: like you don't here. I guess you could do one
- 3:39Speaker 1: on jellyfish for instance. Never mind, I'll take that back.
- 3:42Speaker 1: You're right. Hey, um, it's Marmot on the up and coming.
- 3:46Speaker 1: If we go to a season three, I think we'll
- 3:48Speaker 1: have to do Mormont, definitely seeing them all over right now,
- 3:51Speaker 1: that'd be just cleaning those things as a challenge. I
- 3:54Speaker 1: think you should do jelly fish. So it's like a
- 3:56Speaker 1: little fat. It's very hard to scam a lot of
- 4:00Speaker 1: a lot of fat somebody doesn't eat. We have not
- 4:04Speaker 1: done Prayer. That would also be on season three. Have
- 4:08Speaker 1: you done a new Tria? No, another good one. We
- 4:13Speaker 1: do have roadents. So now don't worry if you've never
- 4:15Speaker 1: seen the show. You'll still be able to participate in
- 4:17Speaker 1: today's round of trivia because these are still questions from
- 4:20Speaker 1: our four verticals, and to compete in today's round of trivia,
- 4:23Speaker 1: I've also invited Maggie Smith, the producer of Pardon My Plate,
- 4:27Speaker 1: Maggie has put more hours into this show, so she
- 4:30Speaker 1: should be well equipped to answer questions about all the
- 4:33Speaker 1: weird things we eat. How you feeling, Maggie? Bringing on
- 4:37Speaker 1: all right? Now, before we get to Trivia, we have
- 4:41Speaker 1: some housekeeping to take care of. On a previous episode
- 4:43Speaker 1: of Trivia, I asked where the annual World Champion Squirrel
- 4:46Speaker 1: Cookoff is held. The correct answer was Arkansas, but the
- 4:50Speaker 1: World Champions Squirrel Cookoff reached out and said that after
- 4:52Speaker 1: a decade of taking place in Bentonville, they're moving to Tennessee.
- 4:56Speaker 1: In Well, according to them, it would suck if the
- 5:01Speaker 1: Super Bowl was in Cleveland for forty straight years, so
- 5:04Speaker 1: they want to give the rest of the country a
- 5:06Speaker 1: chance to experience the squirrel cooking competition, taking it on
- 5:09Speaker 1: the road over to Joyce's or Grace's house. Did you
- 5:13Speaker 1: call me Joyce? Yeah, that's interesting. I haven't been called
- 5:16Speaker 1: Joyce before you in the it does. I'll give you that.
- 5:22Speaker 1: So if you live in Tennessee and you want to
- 5:24Speaker 1: see the World Champion Squirrel cook Off, we're competing it.
- 5:27Speaker 1: It's coming there in October. I think we could probably
- 5:29Speaker 1: convince them to come to Bosing, Montana sum year too. Well,
- 5:32Speaker 1: if they want a change of scenery, they should go
- 5:33Speaker 1: a little farther than like Tennessee. It's right there. It's
- 5:36Speaker 1: not very far. Little steps, little sets, squirrel hunt teeth
- 5:39Speaker 1: down there in the neck of the woods where you were.
- 5:41Speaker 1: You were born and raised in Tennessee, right, Mississippi, Granada, Mississippi.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Because I was a full time student at Vanderbilt, it
- 5:48Speaker 1: was a contested issue. The first runner up did contest
- 5:52Speaker 1: my win, but because I was a full time resident
- 5:58Speaker 1: of the site of Tennessee for the required time period,
- 6:02Speaker 1: the second place contested it. Yeah. Is it a thing?
- 6:06Speaker 1: Is it anything in pageantry where somebody would like grow
- 6:09Speaker 1: up in Texas, but they're gonna move to North Dakota
- 6:12Speaker 1: because that's easier to compete there. People have done that. Now,
- 6:15Speaker 1: I I did not grow up like Toddler's and tears.
- 6:17Speaker 1: I'm not like a like born and bred pageant girl. Um.
- 6:21Speaker 1: I'd like to think I'm not a stereotypical pageant girl. Um,
- 6:25Speaker 1: but it was a really cool experience. So I'm not
- 6:27Speaker 1: gonna like knock it, but um, but yeah, I have
- 6:30Speaker 1: heard of people going that far as to move to
- 6:32Speaker 1: a state that did not have as strong of contenders,
- 6:36Speaker 1: like when Hillary Clinton's all a sudden like I'm running
- 6:40Speaker 1: first Senate in New York. Doctors in Pennsylvania now. Also,
- 6:46Speaker 1: a listener brought to my attention that the Nebraska Game
- 6:49Speaker 1: in Parks Commission is now hosting a Nature Nerd Trivia Night.
- 6:54Speaker 1: Their first event was held in May and took place
- 6:56Speaker 1: at five bars across the state. You were allowed to
- 6:58Speaker 1: compete in groups of five. I've and the reprises for
- 7:01Speaker 1: the winning teams. It's unclear wind Nebraska will hold their
- 7:04Speaker 1: next Nature Near Trivia night, but good on them for
- 7:06Speaker 1: combining a few of our favorite things, nature, trivia and beer.
- 7:10Speaker 1: They didn't say how to turnout was you know, I
- 7:12Speaker 1: haven't heard how it is. That sounds like a great idea.
- 7:15Speaker 1: If Montana did that, we'd have a team for sure.
- 7:18Speaker 1: Every state should get on that action. Yeah, that's great.
- 7:21Speaker 1: With that, we were onto trivia play the drop, Phil, Look,
- 7:26Speaker 1: I need to know what I stay under? Win everything?
- 7:30Speaker 1: How just tend to win everything? Game on Suckers now
- 7:42Speaker 1: a reminder here all ten questions will have some sort
- 7:45Speaker 1: of tie to pardon my play, which is available on
- 7:47Speaker 1: YouTube right now. Question one the topic is conservation and
- 7:51Speaker 1: it is multiple choice. According to the U s GS,
- 7:56Speaker 1: which of these animals is not found in Alaska? Goldfish, crow, common,
- 8:03Speaker 1: carp or coyote. Again, according to the U s G S,
- 8:08Speaker 1: which of these animals is not found in Alaska? Is
- 8:13Speaker 1: it goldfish, crow, common, carp or coyote. Steve, you probably
- 8:20Speaker 1: have the best connection to Alaska in this room? How
- 8:22Speaker 1: do you feel? Not cocky? Not cocky? Grace is very
- 8:28Speaker 1: proud of her answer, showing it off to the room.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I don't think anybody's trying to cheat off by paper
- 8:34Speaker 1: with this topic. Honestly, I think we're waiting on you.
- 8:37Speaker 1: I might take it all. You never know, Underdog. Everybody
- 8:41Speaker 1: have an answer, Go ahead and reveal your answers. We
- 8:44Speaker 1: have Steve saying crow, Grace saying goldfish, Seth saying crow,
- 8:49Speaker 1: Brody saying common, carp, Cal saying carp, Marge saying carp,
- 8:54Speaker 1: Chester saying goldfish, and Janice saying coyote. The correct answer
- 8:58Speaker 1: is carp. It. Craws have been in Alaska for long
- 9:03Speaker 1: as long as humans have. Coyotes showed up about one
- 9:06Speaker 1: hundred years ago in the southeastern part of the state,
- 9:09Speaker 1: and goldfish have recently been found in numerous ponds in
- 9:13Speaker 1: urban areas, including Jewel Lake, Cheney Lake, and Taku Lake
- 9:17Speaker 1: in Anchorage. What did accounted if um like one of
- 9:20Speaker 1: the university ponds and Anchorage had like carpon? You know
- 9:24Speaker 1: they they've actually had a few instances where goldfish have
- 9:28Speaker 1: showed up or carp in urban ponds, but they still
- 9:31Speaker 1: have declared that carp have not entered Alaska's boundaries. Buddy
- 9:35Speaker 1: mine up. There's been an Alaska Fisheries forever met him
- 9:39Speaker 1: through Steve, so I knew that one well done well.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Technically goldfish is a carp So you know that. That's
- 9:45Speaker 1: why we went common carp We're onto question too, what
- 9:49Speaker 1: you what you have? That's right? I thought yours was stupid.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And the topic is cooking. A long standing tradition allows
- 10:02Speaker 1: many Catholics in the Great Lakes region to eat muskrat
- 10:05Speaker 1: during Lent. What is the first day of Lent? Oh,
- 10:11Speaker 1: but we're gonna be pissed. Who's gonna be pissed? My grandmother? Oh? No,
- 10:17Speaker 1: says Graham. Now again, A long standing tradition allows many
- 10:21Speaker 1: Catholics in the Great Lakes region to eat muskrat during Lent.
- 10:25Speaker 1: What is the first day of Lent. You're looking for
- 10:28Speaker 1: a date. No, Oh, Peggy's gonna be up upset to Chester.
- 10:36Speaker 1: So you're you're anticipating getting a lot of blowback for
- 10:38Speaker 1: not knowing this. Yeah, like God had one son, it's
- 10:44Speaker 1: his name. It changes every year. I'm looking for what
- 10:50Speaker 1: day every year does Lent start on? Gosh? I thought
- 10:57Speaker 1: this would be a gimme for the room. I'm just like,
- 11:00Speaker 1: I wish the question would have been what the setup was?
- 11:03Speaker 1: I mean that as I wish you'd been looking for
- 11:05Speaker 1: the answer that you gave in the setup. But I
- 11:10Speaker 1: think you're talking about how they eat muskrats. I don't
- 11:12Speaker 1: think it was exclusive. Can you say the question one
- 11:16Speaker 1: more time? One more time? Here? A long standing tradition
- 11:19Speaker 1: allows many Catholics in the Great Lakes region to eat
- 11:22Speaker 1: muskrat during Lent. What is the first day of Lent? Steve,
- 11:27Speaker 1: you should be very happy with this question. It seems
- 11:29Speaker 1: as though no one else in the room knows it.
- 11:31Speaker 1: I didn't write cockily, Okay, I'm not unhappy with my answer.
- 11:36Speaker 1: Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 11:39Speaker 1: We have Steve saying Good Friday, Grace saying Day after
- 11:43Speaker 1: Fat Tuesday. Seth saying Wednesday, Brodie saying Friday before Easter,
- 11:49Speaker 1: Cal saying ash Wednesday, Marge saying ash Wednesday. Chest you're
- 11:52Speaker 1: saying four weeks before Easter. Here, Joanna saying day after
- 11:56Speaker 1: fat Tuesday. And I think the correct dancer is ash Wednesday,
- 12:02Speaker 1: which I believe is the day after fat Tuesday, right, correct,
- 12:05Speaker 1: So we'll give it to you. I'm sorry they were
- 12:12Speaker 1: very Tuesday, but you can't think of Wednesday that correct,
- 12:19Speaker 1: two days after the day before once a year now.
- 12:29Speaker 1: The genesis of eating muskrat during Lent goes back to
- 12:33Speaker 1: the early eighth century. It all started after a parish
- 12:36Speaker 1: in Detroit made a special exemption that allowed Catholics eat
- 12:40Speaker 1: muskrats during Lent so that they wouldn't starve to death
- 12:43Speaker 1: during a series of hard springs that caused rural missionaries
- 12:47Speaker 1: to run low on food. So you're still accepting that answer,
- 12:53Speaker 1: I will take the day after Fat Tuesday that is
- 12:58Speaker 1: also known as ash Winds Day. I want people to
- 13:00Speaker 1: know I'm not complaining about that. When you take you
- 13:05Speaker 1: like I can't name it, No, not taking just Wednesday.
- 13:08Speaker 1: Did you say Wednesday? You said one day Wednesday. I'm
- 13:11Speaker 1: complaining about it because the Catholics don't actually acknowledge fat Tuesday. Okay,
- 13:16Speaker 1: we will give it to you for saying we're on
- 13:18Speaker 1: the question. Three said Wednesday every bit as good as
- 13:24Speaker 1: day after Tuesday. The topic is okay, Tuesday the day
- 13:32Speaker 1: said the day after fat Tuesday, not any Tuesday. Tuesday
- 13:36Speaker 1: day is Wednesday, girlfriend, Diana Tuesday. That's not what it
- 13:42Speaker 1: sounds like. Well, we gave a specific Tuesday, not just
- 13:47Speaker 1: a general specific protection in it. But you said what day?
- 13:56Speaker 1: One hundred percent Yanni and Grace get it. And I'm
- 13:59Speaker 1: going to defer Phil for if Seth gets in Seth
- 14:02Speaker 1: or Phil says that Seth does, we will give it today.
- 14:11Speaker 1: I named the day, but it's not it's once a
- 14:14Speaker 1: year in the day, and they got it. It's once
- 14:16Speaker 1: a year. You just say you named fifty two days.
- 14:20Speaker 1: That could mean tomorrow. He meant, like, what day does
- 14:23Speaker 1: it land on? Well, Land's on Wednesday. You give it
- 14:25Speaker 1: to him. I quit. I gotta pull a Steve right
- 14:29Speaker 1: now and kind of complain about the way Spencer worded
- 14:31Speaker 1: that question because he didn't he didn't say, like what
- 14:34Speaker 1: do they refer to it as? Or like what do
- 14:36Speaker 1: they call it, and he just said what day does
- 14:38Speaker 1: it fall like? And said Wednesday? Wednesday, whatever, I got
- 14:44Speaker 1: it wrong either way. Let's just some worry that I
- 14:46Speaker 1: could argue that it was Friday. Whatever, let's go, I'm
- 14:50Speaker 1: gonna name the day it's not. But you guys have
- 14:53Speaker 1: the idea. Oh yeah, that counts because there's always question three.
- 15:06Speaker 1: The topic is biology. This word describes the scavenging diet
- 15:12Speaker 1: of crows and coyotes, which means they feed on rotting
- 15:15Speaker 1: carcasses without participating in the killing of the animal. Can
- 15:20Speaker 1: you re reread it? This word describes the scavenging diet
- 15:25Speaker 1: of crows and coyotes, which means they feed on rotting
- 15:28Speaker 1: carcasses without participating in the killing of the animal. Steve
- 15:34Speaker 1: had a quick answer. The rest of the room, though
- 15:36Speaker 1: not so much quite cockily, all point out Maggie. Meggy
- 15:40Speaker 1: knew it right away, she says, Brody knew it. You
- 15:43Speaker 1: felt it right away, like Humunculus told you. My Humunculus
- 15:48Speaker 1: and me both knew. I'm pretty sure I finished writing
- 15:51Speaker 1: before Steve. Wow, Maggie is too fra the heat. Does
- 16:00Speaker 1: everybody have an answer? No? But I know when they
- 16:03Speaker 1: throw it up and be like, yes, of course, I'm
- 16:06Speaker 1: not happy with my answer. Go ahead and reveal your answers.
- 16:09Speaker 1: We have Steve saying carrion grace without an answer, Seth
- 16:13Speaker 1: saying scavenger, Brody saying Carrie and saying Carrie, and Mark
- 16:17Speaker 1: saying Carrie in Chessie without an answer, in Jana saying
- 16:21Speaker 1: Carrie and that is the correct answer Carrion, She's Marge.
- 16:24Speaker 1: I'm pooned from Every spelling is not part of the
- 16:31Speaker 1: game unless I say it either. It is the right day, right.
- 16:36Speaker 1: Did you know all this stuff before, you like wrote
- 16:38Speaker 1: all this stuff for these shows or is it just
- 16:40Speaker 1: fresh in your mind? She found it out two days before.
- 16:43Speaker 1: I'm otherways before. Other animals with carrying diets include vultures, hyenas, crabs,
- 16:55Speaker 1: and beatles. Many carrion eaters are also gorge eaters, which
- 16:59Speaker 1: means they fill their stomachs and crops beyond what you
- 17:02Speaker 1: think is their natural limit. Run. The question for the
- 17:07Speaker 1: topic is fishing. This river, which has produced multiple state
- 17:12Speaker 1: record carp was dammed up to create famous reservoirs like
- 17:16Speaker 1: Guntersville Lake, Wheeler Lake, and Kentucky Lake. So I'm looking
- 17:23Speaker 1: for the name of a river. This river which has
- 17:25Speaker 1: produced multiple state record carp was dammed up to create
- 17:29Speaker 1: famous reservoirs like Guntersville Lake, Wheeler Lake, and Kentucky Lake Grace.
- 17:37Speaker 1: How you feel about this, it's sort of your from
- 17:40Speaker 1: your part of the world. I'll take a look at
- 17:42Speaker 1: the map. A stumped room. I mean, I wrote down
- 17:46Speaker 1: an answer, but I have very little confidence. Does everybody
- 17:49Speaker 1: have an answer? That's what? Now? You know? Something I
- 17:55Speaker 1: realized before I come to Steve, I wonder Brody reads
- 18:00Speaker 1: my ship this reflective glass surface. Something I realized is
- 18:07Speaker 1: that I always bounced these questions off of my wife
- 18:09Speaker 1: before I come in and play, and sort of helps
- 18:11Speaker 1: me gauge how hard the round is. In the last
- 18:14Speaker 1: couple of times, she gets half as many right as
- 18:18Speaker 1: the winner. And I'll tell you last night when we played,
- 18:20Speaker 1: she got five right. So today's winner she nine to
- 18:24Speaker 1: ten range. Well, ten's out. Hasn't everyone missed already? H?
- 18:29Speaker 1: That's not Maggie a Ringerie's all right, let's go go
- 18:38Speaker 1: ahead and reveal your ants. We have Steve saying the
- 18:41Speaker 1: Kentucky River, Gray saying Tennessee River, Seth saying the st
- 18:45Speaker 1: Lawrence Brody saying Ohio River, cal saying the Ohio River,
- 18:49Speaker 1: Maggie without an answer, Chester saying the Arkansas River, in
- 18:52Speaker 1: Ghannis saying the Tennessee River. We do have a correct
- 18:56Speaker 1: answer in the room. It is the Tennessee River. Oh
- 18:59Speaker 1: my hey, yes, And just for the record, Joannest and
- 19:07Speaker 1: I are across the table from each other and not
- 19:08Speaker 1: reading off each other's here in protection. How do you
- 19:17Speaker 1: know Kentucky Lake? I know is in the area. Kentucky
- 19:23Speaker 1: Lake is on the border of Kentucky and Tennessee, and
- 19:26Speaker 1: it's very confusing when you're there. Gundersville and Wheeler are
- 19:30Speaker 1: the two biggest lakes in Alabama, both of which were
- 19:32Speaker 1: formed by Dam's on the Tennessee River. Guntersville has hosted
- 19:36Speaker 1: the bass Master Classic three times and Wheeler Lake has
- 19:38Speaker 1: hosted at once. Run to question five, we'll get a
- 19:41Speaker 1: scoreboard update after this from Phil and this next great
- 19:45Speaker 1: question comes to us via Joe Heywood. If you have
- 19:47Speaker 1: a question you think is right for meata to trivia,
- 19:49Speaker 1: you can send it to trivia at the meat Eator
- 19:52Speaker 1: dot com. More hen which is a type of bird
- 19:56Speaker 1: related to coots in the rail family, was the winning
- 20:00Speaker 1: word at the script spelling b so for the first
- 20:04Speaker 1: time ever in trivia history. I need you to spell
- 20:07Speaker 1: the answer to correctly, and that is more hen. You
- 20:11Speaker 1: need to spell more hand again. This was the winning
- 20:16Speaker 1: word at the two scripts spelling B and it is
- 20:21Speaker 1: a type of bird related to coots in the rail family.
- 20:26Speaker 1: More hand, Phil, how you think you would do on
- 20:29Speaker 1: this one? If I were to ask you to spell
- 20:31Speaker 1: more hand, you think you'd get it. I learned a
- 20:33Speaker 1: new word for the first time today and it was
- 20:35Speaker 1: more hand. Okay, it's gotta be tricky, so it's not
- 20:41Speaker 1: sound it out very good, but I couldn't spell it.
- 20:49Speaker 1: A matter of fact, when I was trying to tell
- 20:51Speaker 1: Brody about the other day, it took about fifteen minutes
- 20:53Speaker 1: to find it on Google. I don't know what to
- 20:55Speaker 1: start writing in. Everybody have an answer looking for you
- 21:05Speaker 1: to spell morhan. Let's just wrap it up. Be honest,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you're just waiting on I mean, yes, the h gets everybody. Yeah,
- 21:22Speaker 1: this is not writing a new version of the word.
- 21:24Speaker 1: I'm ready go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 21:26Speaker 1: Steve going m O r h e n Grace going
- 21:31Speaker 1: m you O r h e n n e Seth
- 21:34Speaker 1: saying m ou r h e n. Brody saying m
- 21:38Speaker 1: o o r h e n, Cal saying m o
- 21:41Speaker 1: O r h e n. Mark saying m a u
- 21:45Speaker 1: r e h t n. That's very creative. Chest You're
- 21:48Speaker 1: going m o o r e h e n and
- 21:51Speaker 1: Janice going m o h r h e n. He
- 21:54Speaker 1: crossed out m o o r h e n. You
- 21:58Speaker 1: guys did pretty well. The correct dancer is m o
- 22:01Speaker 1: o r h e n. Right there, Phil r h
- 22:09Speaker 1: e n. That seems like an easy Here's here's why
- 22:13Speaker 1: I was put mine down thinking that I was just
- 22:15Speaker 1: thrown it away. Harreni Logan won this year's spelling be
- 22:20Speaker 1: with that word. In the competition's first ever lightning round tiebreaker,
- 22:24Speaker 1: the fourteen year old eighth grader from San Antonio spelled
- 22:27Speaker 1: twenty one words correctly in the nineties scond spell off,
- 22:30Speaker 1: while her competitor only got fifteen. Right. Congrats, Hareni. Now
- 22:34Speaker 1: if you thought that was the easiest, because it was.
- 22:36Speaker 1: When they did the lightning round tiebreaker this year, they
- 22:39Speaker 1: made them of a much easier difficulty. So that's why
- 22:41Speaker 1: Morehan doesn't seem as complicated. That's what you think was
- 22:46Speaker 1: to some people. Phil hit the scoreboard day Uh in
- 22:52Speaker 1: the last place. Uh with no points on the board yet,
- 22:56Speaker 1: is Chester the dister tester? He's a ster now yeah
- 23:00Speaker 1: lately Yeah, And with one point coming up next to
- 23:03Speaker 1: seth uh tied tied for third place, we have Grace
- 23:09Speaker 1: and Steve with two points. Tied for second place, we
- 23:13Speaker 1: have Maggie, Janie and Brody with three and then with
- 23:15Speaker 1: four points in first place. A man who's been getting
- 23:18Speaker 1: a lot of ship for his trivia performance lately is
- 23:20Speaker 1: cal calhead So seths only correct answer is Wednesday? Is
- 23:26Speaker 1: that what you're saying? Then, I don't feel bad at all.
- 23:29Speaker 1: You got you got it, nailed it. Halfway through the
- 23:40Speaker 1: game of Tribute, we're onto question six. The topic is trapping.
- 23:45Speaker 1: In nineteen what became the first US state to ban
- 23:49Speaker 1: the sale of fur products? In nineteen what became the
- 23:55Speaker 1: first US state to ban the sale of fur products?
- 23:59Speaker 1: Now this is relevant because many of the animals we
- 24:02Speaker 1: eat on part of my plate are typically harvested for
- 24:05Speaker 1: their for you're honest, how you feel about this one?
- 24:09Speaker 1: Like a okay, that's pretty good, Calaman in lead, how
- 24:17Speaker 1: you feeling shaky? Because there's a ton of articles because
- 24:22Speaker 1: to another state followed me after and I can't remember
- 24:26Speaker 1: which one is in the lead, and it was like
- 24:28Speaker 1: a pretty big asterisk, yeah, big time because I can't
- 24:35Speaker 1: remember where it does everybody have an answer, kind of
- 24:39Speaker 1: go ahead and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying
- 24:41Speaker 1: New York, Great saying California, Seth saying California. Brod He's
- 24:46Speaker 1: saying California, cal saying New York, Maggie saying California, Chester
- 24:52Speaker 1: saying California. Everybody guesses either New York or California, and
- 24:57Speaker 1: nors like North Dakota, and the correct answer is California. Now.
- 25:05Speaker 1: Prior to the statewide band, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley,
- 25:09Speaker 1: and West Hollywood all band for sales at a city level.
- 25:13Speaker 1: Since then, other cities in Massachusetts, Michigan, and Florida have
- 25:16Speaker 1: made similar laws, but California remains the only state with
- 25:20Speaker 1: a statewide band now cal I'm not aware of New
- 25:22Speaker 1: York having a first sales ban. I don't. I don't
- 25:25Speaker 1: think that's right that the city do something like that,
- 25:28Speaker 1: because there's the entire garment district that was based around
- 25:32Speaker 1: for which is why it was a really interesting story, right,
- 25:35Speaker 1: And and the city band was um also shot full
- 25:40Speaker 1: of holes, much like the California thing where it's like,
- 25:43Speaker 1: but you know you can still have for it just
- 25:48Speaker 1: has to be brought in from someplace else and it
- 25:51Speaker 1: can't be like Okay, yeah, you just see someone with
- 25:59Speaker 1: some piece of fur on and they're gonna get I mean,
- 26:01Speaker 1: it's still stupid as ship. If you have a leather belt,
- 26:03Speaker 1: leather shoes, and a leather fast bike or jacket, that's fine.
- 26:07Speaker 1: If you got fur on, they say you need to
- 26:08Speaker 1: shave that fur off and turned out into leather b
- 26:12Speaker 1: else you're in trouble. We're onto question seven. The topic
- 26:16Speaker 1: is conservation. How many species of wildcats are native to
- 26:22Speaker 1: North America? Again? How many species of wildcats are native
- 26:28Speaker 1: to North America? See a lot of folks make making
- 26:32Speaker 1: lists on their white board. How many species of wildcats
- 26:37Speaker 1: are native to North America? Seth, you just doing the
- 26:41Speaker 1: math in your head. My fingers boiled a lot of
- 26:48Speaker 1: thinking here. I don't know if anybody has written down
- 26:50Speaker 1: an official answer yet. Grace, how you feel about this?
- 26:54Speaker 1: Just pulling a number out of thin air? Okay, but
- 26:56Speaker 1: you know what, sometimes you get lucky might be the
- 26:58Speaker 1: right one, might be the right one. And it was
- 27:01Speaker 1: souped up wild can't. Does everybody have an answer? Yes,
- 27:08Speaker 1: go for it. Maggie, you got an answer, Go ahead
- 27:12Speaker 1: and reveal your answers. We have Steve saying six, Grace
- 27:16Speaker 1: saying twelve, Seth saying five, Brody saying six, Cal saying five,
- 27:20Speaker 1: Maggie saying three, Chesters saying three, and Janice saying six.
- 27:23Speaker 1: We do have a correct answer in the room. It
- 27:26Speaker 1: is six. What are they? Steve, Bobcat Lynks, cougar, aslot,
- 27:31Speaker 1: jaguar jag or as Spencer says jaguar or as Spencer
- 27:37Speaker 1: would say, a jaguire rundy. That's why I asked you,
- 27:40Speaker 1: or as I say, jaguar uh jagger rundy, the small
- 27:45Speaker 1: Bobcat Lynks sugar aslot, jaguar, jaguar rundy. The smallest of
- 27:50Speaker 1: these six species is the jaguar rundi, which max is
- 27:53Speaker 1: out at about fifteen pounds, and despite their name, they
- 27:56Speaker 1: are most closely related to pumas and are occasionally spotted
- 28:00Speaker 1: in Texas and Florida. Does that one have another common name?
- 28:05Speaker 1: The small one? Not that I'm aware of, cat called
- 28:09Speaker 1: a serbal? Isn't there is that different? Oh, it's not
- 28:13Speaker 1: where am I thinking? And we do have a seventh
- 28:16Speaker 1: cat in North America, which is the domestic cat, but
- 28:19Speaker 1: it's not native to hear so it does not count.
- 28:21Speaker 1: We'll have to question eight. We will get a scoreboard
- 28:23Speaker 1: update from Phil after this. Skunks are one of the
- 28:28Speaker 1: only critters in the world that are immune to the
- 28:31Speaker 1: venom from what animal? Again, skunks are one of the
- 28:37Speaker 1: only critters in the world that are immune to the
- 28:40Speaker 1: venom from what animal? Maggie knew this one. I got
- 28:48Speaker 1: a couple of things I'm gonna put down. You can
- 28:52Speaker 1: pick which one you like. Can I ask a question
- 28:55Speaker 1: I might not answer. Is this like a specific or
- 28:59Speaker 1: like a height? You put down whatever you think is okay?
- 29:04Speaker 1: I will Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead and
- 29:10Speaker 1: reveal your answers we have. Steve, I want to preface
- 29:14Speaker 1: it by saying I'm having a rough game. Steve saying rattlesnake,
- 29:18Speaker 1: Gray saying snake, Seth saying rattlesnake, Brody saying snake, Cal
- 29:21Speaker 1: saying rattlesnake, Karin saying snakes Chester, You're saying rattlesnake, and
- 29:25Speaker 1: Jana saying rattlesto me saying we are not going to
- 29:27Speaker 1: accept snake Everybody got it right. They are immune to
- 29:31Speaker 1: all snake venom, so everybody all snake venom, all snake venom.
- 29:38Speaker 1: Other animals that are immune to snake venom include wood rats,
- 29:42Speaker 1: California ground squirrels, possums, domestic pigs, hedgehogs, honey badgers, and mongoose.
- 29:48Speaker 1: Studies have shown that skunks are unaffected by doses of
- 29:52Speaker 1: snake venom one hundred times higher than what it would
- 29:55Speaker 1: take to kill a dog. Spencer, Did you trap that
- 29:58Speaker 1: skunky eight? Or do you shoot it? We actually had
- 30:01Speaker 1: a landowner from out of town that had some problems
- 30:04Speaker 1: skunks where he sat the tramps, and over a couple
- 30:07Speaker 1: of days span he let me know when he got one.
- 30:09Speaker 1: How sit with you? We we have an episode coming
- 30:13Speaker 1: out where we eat the thing and you can watch it.
- 30:15Speaker 1: Then I can't wait. Phil hit us with a scoreboard update. Alright,
- 30:21Speaker 1: well we have four players who are still in it. Actually,
- 30:26Speaker 1: I guess technically we have six. We have Steven Grace
- 30:30Speaker 1: tied for third place with four, We have Maggie and
- 30:33Speaker 1: Cal tied for second place with five, and tied for
- 30:37Speaker 1: first place Bertie Henderson and the Honest to tell us
- 30:40Speaker 1: a six points and my Nemesses. Question nine. The topic
- 30:46Speaker 1: is cooking. The National Outdoor Show, which features a muskrat
- 30:51Speaker 1: skinning contest and muskrat cooking contest, is held every year
- 30:56Speaker 1: in what East Coast state? Again, this is the National
- 31:01Speaker 1: Outdoor Show, which features a muskrat skinning contest and muskrat
- 31:06Speaker 1: cooking contest, is held every year in what East Coast state? Steve,
- 31:13Speaker 1: did you know this one right away? I wouldn't say that.
- 31:17Speaker 1: I got a strong feeling. Everything likes has a strong opinion.
- 31:27Speaker 1: How about you, Seth, You look like you had a
- 31:28Speaker 1: quick answer. I have a good feeling, but I there's yeah,
- 31:33Speaker 1: I have a good feeling, but I'm it might be
- 31:36Speaker 1: not right, not right. They they name a miss muskrat.
- 31:42Speaker 1: They do actually have anything. They do have a miss muskrat.
- 31:45Speaker 1: If you want to go compete, Grace, that ship sailed
- 31:49Speaker 1: a long time ago. O ACA. Does everybody have an answer?
- 31:54Speaker 1: I want to see what. I just need to see what.
- 31:56Speaker 1: Bro you go ahead and reveal your answers. We have
- 31:58Speaker 1: Steve saying Maryland, Grace, South Carolina, Seth saying Maryland, Brody
- 32:03Speaker 1: saying Pennsylvania, cal saying Pennsylvania, Maggie saying Pennsylvania, Chester saying Connecticut,
- 32:08Speaker 1: and Jana saying the correct answer is Maryland something bit
- 32:15Speaker 1: two in a row. Hey, it ain't over yet. In
- 32:21Speaker 1: an unrelated event, in Maryland is also home to a
- 32:24Speaker 1: muskrat leg eating World Championship. The winner of the one
- 32:29Speaker 1: competition was Chucky Love Hayward, who ate twenty legs in
- 32:33Speaker 1: three minutes. Second place went to the defending champion, peg
- 32:36Speaker 1: Leg Bramble, who ate nineteen muskrat legs. That's a good
- 32:40Speaker 1: way to get bone stuck in your throat, man. They
- 32:43Speaker 1: actually when when the competition is over, they have an
- 32:45Speaker 1: official judge, which I think is like the town mayor
- 32:47Speaker 1: that goes through and evaluates the plates to see how
- 32:50Speaker 1: many bones are around and to make sure that everybody
- 32:54Speaker 1: ate the muskrats, they said, they ate. Who's calling you?
- 32:57Speaker 1: Do you want to know? It's the punt gun salesman? Actually,
- 33:03Speaker 1: uh so, I'll hit him back up after this. The
- 33:06Speaker 1: punt gun should be here this month. I cannot wait.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Were onto the final question, Phil, give us a scoreboard update. Alright, Well,
- 33:14Speaker 1: in second place we have Brodie Henderson with six and
- 33:18Speaker 1: the Honest is in first with seven points, so I'm
- 33:20Speaker 1: like out. But a reminder, we are going to be
- 33:26Speaker 1: collecting data from every game of trivia, so you should
- 33:29Speaker 1: still try because they could affect your average score per game.
- 33:33Speaker 1: The topic is conservation. The Global Invasive Species Database named
- 33:40Speaker 1: T trout in the top one hundred worst invasive species
- 33:44Speaker 1: on the planet. What are they again? The Global Invasive
- 33:50Speaker 1: Species Database named T trout in the top one hundred
- 33:55Speaker 1: worst invasive species on the planet. Is this gonna what
- 33:59Speaker 1: are they? Listen? I already got a complaint. I haven't
- 34:04Speaker 1: even heard the answer, because are you gonna be asking
- 34:07Speaker 1: what's trout and what's not a trout? You said it
- 34:10Speaker 1: not me? That's the question real quick? Is this thing
- 34:15Speaker 1: in shootable condition? Can we take it out on private
- 34:17Speaker 1: land and touch it off for a while? Oh that's
- 34:19Speaker 1: that's like the finale of whatever we do with you know.
- 34:22Speaker 1: Remember the comedian Gallagher, remember you guys had a similar hairstyle,
- 34:28Speaker 1: Well he grew. Gallagher had two lines of humor, which
- 34:34Speaker 1: was he would do wordplay jokes. Then after boring everybody
- 34:39Speaker 1: with that ship, he would get out a giant sledgehammer
- 34:42Speaker 1: and smash fruit watermelons. Grace you never heard of this
- 34:47Speaker 1: fella watermelons, candle ops, and like people that were in
- 34:50Speaker 1: the know would like, bring a rain poncho. Well, we're
- 34:54Speaker 1: going to become like Gallagher with that punk gun. People
- 34:58Speaker 1: in the know will bring here and protect. Well, only
- 35:05Speaker 1: we knew somebody it help us out. Brodie, how are
- 35:10Speaker 1: you feeling about this question? I kind of want to
- 35:12Speaker 1: answer differently than I want to on the off chance
- 35:15Speaker 1: that I might be different than you Honice's answer, and
- 35:18Speaker 1: I'll like sneak up. The other part of it is yeah,
- 35:23Speaker 1: because there's a thing that I would think yes, but
- 35:26Speaker 1: I could also see him like particularly like the kind
- 35:29Speaker 1: of place we're in right now. I'll tell you why
- 35:32Speaker 1: this is relevant to part of my plates because common
- 35:35Speaker 1: carp also made the top one hundred worst invasive species.
- 35:40Speaker 1: But I'm gonna be really pissed if it's what I
- 35:42Speaker 1: think it is. Does everybody have an answer? Go ahead
- 35:46Speaker 1: and reveal your answer. We have Steve saying what two
- 35:50Speaker 1: of them? Two of them? Well, I had Brooke right there,
- 35:52Speaker 1: Rainbow and Brooke Grace without an answer, Seth saying Lake
- 35:56Speaker 1: and Rainbow, Brodie saying Rainbow, and Brooke House saying brown
- 36:01Speaker 1: and rainbow, I had brown, Maggie saying rainbow and brown
- 36:07Speaker 1: chest you're saying Brooke and Lake in rainbow and brown. No,
- 36:14Speaker 1: I think somebody did get it right in the room.
- 36:16Speaker 1: The correct answer is rainbow and brown. Who had that?
- 36:20Speaker 1: Oh my god wins and I think Maggie also got
- 36:26Speaker 1: it and cal well because a rainbow and brown were
- 36:34Speaker 1: the answers how many species of char in the top one?
- 36:37Speaker 1: H that's what we're not aware by. Rainbow could also
- 36:43Speaker 1: be considered one of the world's most successful parasites, a
- 36:47Speaker 1: parasite off humans because brook chowd are definitely Yeah, but
- 36:53Speaker 1: they're like, I think, arguably more invasive than rainbows or brown.
- 36:58Speaker 1: That mean it's going to be like in the like
- 36:59Speaker 1: in a like Haul of Fame. Yanni has been on
- 37:05Speaker 1: rainbow are actually a salmon? Yeah, there's something nis like
- 37:10Speaker 1: in the like very very strong player these days. Yes?
- 37:14Speaker 1: Is that two in a row? Yes, sir. You've also
- 37:16Speaker 1: now caught up to uh Brody for total winds, So
- 37:20Speaker 1: Steve is going to be giving you the distinct guy
- 37:23Speaker 1: as well as Brody from now on. I've been trying
- 37:25Speaker 1: to stay under the radar, but those days must be
- 37:28Speaker 1: over now Janni's as the winner, you get to choose
- 37:31Speaker 1: where our five dollar donation goes. So what's it gonna be.
- 37:34Speaker 1: I'd like to donate it to the Veil Big Horn
- 37:37Speaker 1: Sheep Initiative. Now we might need to give them a
- 37:40Speaker 1: little bit of time so they can actually receive the money,
- 37:42Speaker 1: because this is like a very new organization and a
- 37:46Speaker 1: new initiative. But in Veil, Colorado, where Brodi used to live.
- 37:51Speaker 1: We actually never lived in Veil. We live in Eagle County,
- 37:54Speaker 1: which is the county that it's in. But there's a
- 37:57Speaker 1: very small chunk of winter for these bighorn sheeps that
- 38:01Speaker 1: live in the Gore Range where I got to hunt
- 38:02Speaker 1: and kill my sheep last year, and it's like the
- 38:05Speaker 1: whole winter range is like a hundred forty some acres,
- 38:09Speaker 1: well twenty four acres of it. Is trying to Veil Resorts,
- 38:13Speaker 1: is trying to develop it to housing four employees. World
- 38:20Speaker 1: needs more people to work at a ski. We had
- 38:22Speaker 1: an article about it, didn't we on the website, not yet,
- 38:25Speaker 1: but we will soon. And I imagine it would be
- 38:26Speaker 1: something that Cal's Weak and Review touches on as well.
- 38:29Speaker 1: That would be awesome if you would do that. For
- 38:32Speaker 1: cal sounds sounds right in the wheelhouse. Okay, so there
- 38:36Speaker 1: you go. If you're interested in it right now and
- 38:39Speaker 1: you can't you need more than what you can find
- 38:41Speaker 1: the meter website. You can also go to uh how
- 38:43Speaker 1: for wildlife dot org. They've got some stuff to uh
- 38:46Speaker 1: that you can do for the Veil Bighorn Sheep initiative
- 38:49Speaker 1: as well. It's right, we're gonna hit you over the
- 38:51Speaker 1: head with information about the skiers that we're trying to
- 38:54Speaker 1: build an important habitat for bighorn sheep. We thank you
- 38:59Speaker 1: really urging as a dominant na. Yeah, just emerging as
- 39:03Speaker 1: a dominant intimidating force. I think kind of at first, Yanni,
- 39:07Speaker 1: you maybe didn't get it, like what what we were doing?
- 39:09Speaker 1: What was going on? More days like oh, they were
- 39:13Speaker 1: the right answer. I don't have to ask it in
- 39:17Speaker 1: question for him, and it all started to click that
- 39:23Speaker 1: Tuesday Wednesday thing by a point one by two. Over you,
- 39:32Speaker 1: g Grayce and Maggie. Thank you for joining us today.
- 39:35Speaker 1: If you like today's episode of Mediator Trivia, then you're
- 39:38Speaker 1: going to like pardon my plate. Please go watch it
- 39:40Speaker 1: on our YouTube channel. Episode one where Steve and I
- 39:43Speaker 1: cook Muskrat is out right now. Episodes two and three,
- 39:46Speaker 1: where cal and I cook Crow and Janice and I
- 39:48Speaker 1: cooked Bob Cat, will be out next week. And that's
- 39:51Speaker 1: it for today's Around the Meetiator Trivia, the only game
- 39:54Speaker 1: show where conservation always wins s
