- 0:10Speaker 1: Hi, my name is Jennifer Lawrence and you're listening.
- 0:15Speaker 2: To Movie Meltdown.
- 0:24Speaker 3: It's showtime.
- 0:25Speaker 4: The following feature has been rated R by the Motion
- 0:28Speaker 4: Picture Association of America. It is intended for mature audiences
- 0:33Speaker 4: and parental discretion is advised.
- 0:35Speaker 5: Our nuclear reactor pumping out one million kilowatts of power.
- 1:11Speaker 3: I'm a nerd, and I'm pretty proud of it.
- 1:24Speaker 6: What's up, and welcome to Movie Meltdown.
- 1:26Speaker 7: We are coming to you live via digital recording from
- 1:28Speaker 7: the Bardstown here in Louisville.
- 1:30Speaker 5: I once again am Brian. I'm Greg.
- 1:32Speaker 8: I'm Lucy.
- 1:34Speaker 7: And I know normally you guys like to leave your
- 1:36Speaker 7: guests sitting there for 15 minutes and make them be
- 1:38Speaker 7: really quiet, but I thought I would go ahead and
- 1:41Speaker 7: bring you in now. Our special guest, the reason we're
- 1:43Speaker 7: here today, is Chris and Graham from Comedy Film Nerds.
- 1:46Speaker 6: Great to be here.
- 1:48Speaker 9: Hello.
- 1:48Speaker 6: And I thought it was neat, too, because when we
- 1:51Speaker 6: first came to the room, like the showroom, we were like, oh,
- 1:54Speaker 6: this is a cool place. Maybe we'll find the green room.
- 1:56Speaker 6: You guys were sitting in the green room quietly waiting
- 1:59Speaker 6: for us to discover you.
- 2:00Speaker 5: Mm-hmm.
- 2:01Speaker 6: It's not like, hey, guys, back here.
- 2:02Speaker 4: No, no.
- 2:03Speaker 6: They're like, shh.
- 2:04Speaker 9: Don't make a sound.
- 2:05Speaker 6: Let them find us.
- 2:05Speaker 9: See what those weirdos do. If they don't find us,
- 2:08Speaker 9: we don't do the show.
- 2:09Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 2:09Speaker 6: No, we're doing the show without them. We'll be like,
- 2:11Speaker 6: so the guys are in the other room. Where's all
- 2:13Speaker 6: that whispering coming from?
- 2:14Speaker 7: Shh.
- 2:15Speaker 6: There they go.
- 2:16Speaker 5: It's a hide-and-seek podcast. Didn't know that.
- 2:18Speaker 9: It's a good hide-and-seek podcast.
- 2:19Speaker 6: We didn't tell you that.
- 2:20Speaker 9: Like a scavenger hunt. That sounds delightful.
- 2:23Speaker 6: 45 minutes till the guest found us. So we only
- 2:25Speaker 6: got a few minutes left to talk. I mean, you
- 2:27Speaker 6: left us a trail of earbuds.
- 2:30Speaker 5: Tweaked audio earbuds.
- 2:31Speaker 6: Thank you very much.
- 2:32Speaker 5: So those are your sponsors.
- 2:34Speaker 6: That's sponsor plug, plug.
- 2:35Speaker 9: Nice. What do we have that in? I like to
- 2:37Speaker 9: see it.
- 2:38Speaker 6: Use the code.
- 2:39Speaker 10: Nope.
- 2:40Speaker 6: Down.
- 2:40Speaker 7: Anyway. So, um, technically Graham, you've been on here before. Um,
- 2:46Speaker 7: years and years ago, back when you were a fledgling
- 2:48Speaker 7: little show.
- 2:48Speaker 6: And you were like, you.
- 2:51Speaker 7: Know, actually, I think Doug was kind of like, would
- 2:53Speaker 7: you please take this guy off my hands for an hour?
- 2:55Speaker 6: And I'm like, all right, I'll do you a favor, Doug.
- 2:57Speaker 7: So, you know, we kept you busy for a little
- 2:59Speaker 7: while while Doug took a nap. But I think we
- 3:02Speaker 7: at least got a basic with you that time. So, Chris,
- 3:04Speaker 7: this is your first time.
- 3:05Speaker 5: Glad to be here.
- 3:06Speaker 7: We'd let you kind of do a little intro to
- 3:08Speaker 7: you and, you know, I guess how you got into
- 3:10Speaker 7: comedy and then how you and why you hooked.
- 3:13Speaker 6: Up with this guy. Yeah. Well, the story is remarkably similar.
- 3:17Speaker 6: I went to film school, started doing stand-up, came out
- 3:20Speaker 6: to L.A., made a bunch of short films, written screenplays, television,
- 3:26Speaker 6: and hooked up with Graham on an Internet show. This
- 3:30Speaker 6: is before Internet shows were viable or popular. Or no
- 3:33Speaker 6: one even knew what the Internet was yet. And then
- 3:37Speaker 6: we had a lunch meeting a couple years later. I'm like, hey,
- 3:41Speaker 6: did you know the Internet could do this? No, I didn't.
- 3:44Speaker 10: A couple years later, let's call it 10. Let's call
- 3:47Speaker 10: it 10 years later.
- 3:49Speaker 6: I'm not good with dates. I'm still downloading porn.
- 3:51Speaker 9: Hold on.
- 3:52Speaker 10: That's why I always win at Leonard Maltin, because he
- 3:55Speaker 10: doesn't understand time.
- 3:56Speaker 6: I don't understand time, dates, or reality. You'll do fine
- 4:01Speaker 6: on our show, man. You'll do fine. So, Graham and I,
- 4:06Speaker 6: we actually started the website first, comedyfilmnards.com. We wanted it
- 4:09Speaker 6: to be kind of a portal for comedians, filmmakers, film talk,
- 4:13Speaker 6: film discussion. We wanted to make it very different in
- 4:17Speaker 6: the fact that it came from a love of film
- 4:20Speaker 6: and a film knowledge first, and then it was funny.
- 4:23Speaker 6: We would never just start making fun of movies or
- 4:26Speaker 6: just making movie jokes. We really came from a background
- 4:29Speaker 6: of filmmaking really and.
- 4:31Speaker 7: You're really trying to branch out from what is on
- 4:34Speaker 7: the internet otherwise yeah everyone else who has a show
- 4:37Speaker 7: i don't know who i'm.
- 4:38Speaker 6: Talking about it not our show but so and that's
- 4:41Speaker 6: where we expanded we added the podcast and we've expanded
- 4:43Speaker 6: the um the website and now we're we're our next
- 4:47Speaker 6: big expansion will be for to help filmmakers with digital
- 4:50Speaker 6: distribution we have four films right now including graham's uh
- 4:53Speaker 6: l'afghanistan which you pay whatever you want That's a special
- 4:59Speaker 6: model of pay what you think is fair. The rest
- 5:01Speaker 6: of them are about $ 11. 99. And what we're going to
- 5:04Speaker 6: do is open it up to more filmmakers for digital
- 5:07Speaker 6: distribution because iTunes takes way too much of a cut.
- 5:11Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 5:13Speaker 6: The whole point of what we're doing is to eliminate
- 5:15Speaker 6: the middleman artists, um, writers, filmmakers, comedians need to go
- 5:18Speaker 6: directly to their fans. And that's one of the reasons
- 5:20Speaker 6: we joined the all things comedy network is because they,
- 5:23Speaker 6: it was run by two comics and they share the
- 5:26Speaker 6: same philosophy. Yeah.
- 5:28Speaker 7: You guys have streamlined it and sort of found your audience. And, uh,
- 5:32Speaker 7: so I guess we just need more.
- 5:33Speaker 6: Well, yeah, but we're, we're very pleased that the way
- 5:38Speaker 6: things are going and the audience that we have is amazing. And, uh,
- 5:42Speaker 6: I know we've gone on podcasts where it's like, oh man,
- 5:44Speaker 6: we hate our audience. They're such weirdos and creeps. I'm like,
- 5:48Speaker 6: what does that say about you then? Yeah. What are
- 5:50Speaker 6: you doing?
- 5:51Speaker 9: Who are you attracting?
- 5:52Speaker 6: That you are ashamed of the people who listen to you.
- 5:54Speaker 8: Yes.
- 5:55Speaker 6: We have awesome people. Ours just made us a comic book.
- 5:57Speaker 6: Starring us.
- 5:59Speaker 9: Isn't that awesome? Isn't that cool?
- 6:00Speaker 6: Isn't that awesome? Yeah, we get cool swag. We get
- 6:03Speaker 6: cool stuff from Japan. I mean, really, really fun, great audience.
- 6:06Speaker 6: You guys people do this.
- 6:07Speaker 11: Cupcakes yeah i know big fan japan she's awesome uh
- 6:13Speaker 11: made us cupcakes with our logo on them god wow
- 6:15Speaker 11: like we have all kinds of cool stuff that's it's
- 6:17Speaker 11: that's and like that's part of the thing.
- 6:19Speaker 6: They had ricin but they were still really good they
- 6:22Speaker 6: were high gluten yeah as much as they could pack
- 6:24Speaker 6: into it just for gram.
- 6:26Speaker 10: And i've been in the middle of it there was
- 6:27Speaker 10: a transformer yeah So, uh, no, but we, you know,
- 6:31Speaker 10: Chris and I talked about this early on when we
- 6:33Speaker 10: first were hatching the plan for.
- 6:35Speaker 9: This in 2007, the website launched in April of 2008.
- 6:38Speaker 10: And then about a year and a half after that
- 6:41Speaker 10: was when the podcast came out.
- 6:42Speaker 9: Um, Was like creating.
- 6:44Speaker 6: Or as I say, two weeks later.
- 6:45Speaker 5: Two weeks later, yeah.
- 6:46Speaker 10: We met in 94, and then a couple weeks later,
- 6:49Speaker 10: we hatched it all together.
- 6:50Speaker 6: And then we drove here.
- 6:52Speaker 9: That's in Chris's timeline.
- 6:53Speaker 6: And then I had two children.
- 6:56Speaker 9: Right in that same month.
- 6:57Speaker 5: Somewhere in that.
- 6:58Speaker 9: Maybe six weeks? Yeah, maybe six weeks.
- 7:00Speaker 6: Very similar.
- 7:02Speaker 10: Where we wanted to create a community, you know, and
- 7:05Speaker 10: we really found that. Like on the message boards and
- 7:09Speaker 10: on the Facebook fan page. and on Twitter that we've
- 7:13Speaker 10: got this community of fans that love talking about movies.
- 7:17Speaker 10: And we've really done a good job, I think, of
- 7:22Speaker 10: we always say keep the debates friendly, keep them nice.
- 7:24Speaker 9: This isn't some political talk show.
- 7:28Speaker 10: So, you know, when people have even called us out,
- 7:31Speaker 10: like recently I got called out for some of the
- 7:33Speaker 10: comments I made in the Star Trek spoiler rep episode.
- 7:36Speaker 6: I have some for that, too. But they're very nice.
- 7:40Speaker 9: Oh, snap. Here we go. Nothing smokes out a nerd
- 7:44Speaker 9: like Star Trek.
- 7:45Speaker 8: No.
- 7:46Speaker 9: Holy shit.
- 7:46Speaker 6: And I'm more Star Wars, but you know.
- 7:48Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 7:49Speaker 5: It doesn't matter.
- 7:50Speaker 9: Unbelievable.
- 7:51Speaker 10: It's true. And that's the kind of thing. We've learned
- 7:55Speaker 10: about movies from our fans.
- 7:57Speaker 6: Everyone's got one foot into Star Trek. Yeah. Except for J.J. Abrams.
- 8:02Speaker 9: It's more like a toe.
- 8:03Speaker 6: I'll give you that one, then. But yeah, it is funny.
- 8:07Speaker 7: You do find that there are a lot of people
- 8:09Speaker 7: out there. And there are a lot of smart people
- 8:11Speaker 7: out there. And you just have to weed through the
- 8:13Speaker 7: morons on the internet. And you find your fan base.
- 8:16Speaker 7: And those are the good people that support you and
- 8:18Speaker 7: that keep coming back every week.
- 8:20Speaker 9: We early on would call out. people's uh shitty postings.
- 8:24Speaker 10: Or comments we would literally because you should we treated
- 8:27Speaker 10: them like hecklers yeah this isn't some anonymous thing fucko
- 8:30Speaker 10: like i'm coming at you you want you know who
- 8:32Speaker 10: i am you know what i look like i will
- 8:34Speaker 10: come at you and if you want to hide behind
- 8:36Speaker 10: your itunes profile well then go suck it.
- 8:39Speaker 7: Well we had that we had somebody that we we
- 8:42Speaker 7: said something horrible on the show and it was it
- 8:43Speaker 7: was pretty blatantly stupid but it was like meant to
- 8:46Speaker 7: be like we were just like making a gross over
- 8:49Speaker 7: exaggeration about something and we did it on purpose And
- 8:52Speaker 7: then somebody called out with, like, this ridiculous fact of
- 8:55Speaker 7: how that.
- 8:55Speaker 6: You really alienated this many people in your audience. And, like,
- 8:59Speaker 6: I sent him this big long. How do they know
- 9:01Speaker 6: how many people you have?
- 9:02Speaker 9: Yeah, exactly.
- 9:03Speaker 7: But, like, he, like, sent me this, like, you know,
- 9:05Speaker 7: angry little post. And I, like, I sent him this
- 9:08Speaker 7: big long, like, well-worded one.
- 9:10Speaker 6: And he was like.
- 9:11Speaker 9: Oh well I didn't expect you to answer it.
- 9:12Speaker 7: Like he then came back with a normal like well
- 9:15Speaker 7: word you can calm them down yeah and.
- 9:17Speaker 6: He's just like oh well we've.
- 9:18Speaker 10: Gotten plenty of email manifestos about certain things and I've
- 9:22Speaker 10: written back and gone well actually this is the point I.
- 9:24Speaker 7: Was making and they go oh okay I was like,
- 9:27Speaker 7: we were joking. I don't know if you got that.
- 9:29Speaker 9: A lot of comedy.
- 9:31Speaker 6: And then there's that small percentage where it doesn't matter.
- 9:34Speaker 7: It was like, the people we were making fun of,
- 9:37Speaker 7: one of the people's on the show that we were
- 9:38Speaker 7: making fun of.
- 9:39Speaker 6: So, I mean, you're supposed to pay attention to that.
- 9:41Speaker 9: I said, we got one of those. And the person's
- 9:45Speaker 9: gripe was somewhat... There was some validity to it. That's
- 9:50Speaker 9: the other thing. Because we weeded out a lot of
- 9:51Speaker 9: the wingnuts, when we do get a gripe email, it's like, oh,
- 9:54Speaker 9: this is a reasonable thing.
- 9:57Speaker 10: This is like an argument a friend of mine would
- 9:58Speaker 10: bring to my attention or something.
- 10:00Speaker 6: Or like something on the site that's not working or
- 10:02Speaker 6: something like that.
- 10:02Speaker 9: Well, that's been really helpful.
- 10:04Speaker 6: We need to know that, yeah. And our message boards
- 10:07Speaker 6: just went through that right now. It's like, you guys
- 10:09Speaker 6: need a moderator. And we're like, okay, well, you want
- 10:10Speaker 6: to do it? Yeah, sure. So now we have a
- 10:12Speaker 6: message board moderator.
- 10:13Speaker 9: Sucker, got the job.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:15Speaker 6: And then there was comments like, well, you know, the
- 10:17Speaker 6: message boards, we can't really change the topics and all
- 10:20Speaker 6: that stuff. And it's like, all right, we'll let the
- 10:22Speaker 6: moderator do it. So it took it. We do everything
- 10:24Speaker 6: at a very slow pace. But it gets done. Working
- 10:26Speaker 6: on a shoestring. It gets done. I understand that. It
- 10:29Speaker 6: took us weeks. But now, you know, the moderator has
- 10:31Speaker 6: power to change everything on the message boards and everything's
- 10:34Speaker 6: going a lot smoother. Now we're just having some problem
- 10:36Speaker 6: with spammers. Like what happens is that we were going to.
- 10:40Speaker 6: Spammers on the message boards, as everyone does.
- 10:43Speaker 5: I've seen a few of them.
- 10:44Speaker 6: The capture wasn't working or something. So we put in
- 10:46Speaker 6: all these safeguards to get rid of the spammers. And
- 10:50Speaker 6: then people were emailing and going, hey, I can't get through.
- 10:54Speaker 6: Now my post is spam. I can't make my smart-ass comment.
- 10:58Speaker 6: The best part was that the guy that recommended these
- 11:00Speaker 6: spam filters was the first one that got bounced when
- 11:04Speaker 6: we turned them on. Oh, robots. So we're still finding
- 11:09Speaker 6: that balance, but we're almost there.
- 11:11Speaker 9: Very nice.
- 11:13Speaker 6: All right. Well, I guess if we want to.
- 11:14Speaker 9: That's our show.
- 11:15Speaker 12: Thanks, guys.
- 11:15Speaker 10: That's it.
- 11:16Speaker 5: We're done.
- 11:30Speaker 7: If we want to get into the grind here, we had,
- 11:33Speaker 7: you know, we were trying to come up with a
- 11:34Speaker 7: good topic. Grammy said we'll throw out a general summer
- 11:37Speaker 7: movies kind of thing. So I'm assuming you meant like
- 11:41Speaker 7: Summer 42 and A Summer Place and, you know, the.
- 11:43Speaker 6: Frankie and Annette movies. I'm prepared to do an hour
- 11:46Speaker 6: on these. So I hope you brought your game.
- 11:48Speaker 9: I could talk about the Mark Harmon Vehicle Summer School.
- 11:51Speaker 6: Yes.
- 11:52Speaker 9: Because we in that movie helped design our first website.
- 11:57Speaker 6: Exactly.
- 11:58Speaker 9: But bam. You didn't know that was going to happen today,
- 12:00Speaker 9: did you?
- 12:01Speaker 6: I thought it was all just an excuse for you
- 12:02Speaker 6: to talk about the endless summer.
- 12:04Speaker 5: But, you know.
- 12:05Speaker 9: I wish I could talk about that.
- 12:06Speaker 6: It's a surf movie.
- 12:06Speaker 9: We could talk surfing all day.
- 12:09Speaker 7: But no, I figure we can hit it however you want.
- 12:12Speaker 7: We can do stuff that's already come out. And then
- 12:15Speaker 7: I've got a list of stuff coming out later this
- 12:17Speaker 7: summer if we want to address what we think of
- 12:20Speaker 7: some of these upcoming releases.
- 12:21Speaker 6: So I don't know. Do we want to get into
- 12:23Speaker 6: Star Trek? It's your show. Why don't you guys pick?
- 12:28Speaker 7: We did a little on it at the beginning, but
- 12:29Speaker 7: I hadn't even seen it then, so I don't think
- 12:31Speaker 7: I've talked about it.
- 12:33Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 12:33Speaker 9: My take on it was like there was a lot.
- 12:35Speaker 6: Of negative stuff I heard at the very beginning.
- 12:38Speaker 7: And then I saw it and I was just like,
- 12:40Speaker 7: to some extent, I'm like, I don't even know what
- 12:41Speaker 7: you're griping about. Like, if you were on board with
- 12:43Speaker 7: the first one, it's a lot more of that. Like,
- 12:46Speaker 7: it has some of the problems the first one did,
- 12:48Speaker 7: but I'm like, it's still just big, dumb fun.
- 12:51Speaker 6: Well, that goes to a different issue. And this is
- 12:54Speaker 6: true with all movies, especially big summer blockbuster movies. Expectations
- 13:00Speaker 6: and also chatter. And when those things don't necessarily match
- 13:03Speaker 6: up or you hear too much or you have too
- 13:05Speaker 6: much of one, It's not going to match up when
- 13:07Speaker 6: you see the film. Like if you go into Star
- 13:09Speaker 6: Trek and you haven't heard anything, you've avoided Facebook, that's
- 13:12Speaker 6: the best way to see big summer movies. Stay off
- 13:14Speaker 6: of Facebook. Yeah, it really is. You've got to go dark.
- 13:17Speaker 6: You really do right before you see these movies because
- 13:19Speaker 6: there's so much chatter. Pretty much. And the other thing is, too,
- 13:22Speaker 6: it's like what kind of expectations are you bringing to
- 13:25Speaker 6: the table? Did you like the first one? Did you
- 13:26Speaker 6: hate the first one? And I will definitely agree with you.
- 13:30Speaker 6: There was a lot of things that happened in the
- 13:32Speaker 6: second one that kind of happened in the first one.
- 13:33Speaker 6: So if you weren't happy with the stuff in the
- 13:35Speaker 6: first one, or it happens worse in the second one.
- 13:39Speaker 6: We found, like, I was actually more forgiving on the
- 13:41Speaker 6: first one. And I still liked the second one, but,
- 13:44Speaker 6: you know, the lack of attention to detail on the
- 13:48Speaker 6: science fiction elements in certain plot points really was like, okay,
- 13:51Speaker 6: now that's just sloppy.
- 13:52Speaker 7: You know, I.
- 13:54Speaker 10: and we talked about it on the show and, and
- 13:55Speaker 10: cause we, we talked about it on our regular episode.
- 13:57Speaker 10: Then we did a spoiler alert episode.
- 13:58Speaker 12: Right.
- 13:59Speaker 6: So we've talked about it. Geeks don't ever like to
- 14:03Speaker 6: talk about.
- 14:05Speaker 9: Stuff.
- 14:06Speaker 10: But the thing that happened was we sort of, I
- 14:09Speaker 10: think Chris and I both kind of had a, wow,
- 14:11Speaker 10: that was fun while we were watching it. And then
- 14:14Speaker 10: afterwards started thinking, wait a minute. And when we talked
- 14:17Speaker 10: about that on the show, we got a lot of
- 14:19Speaker 10: posts and stuff from people who were, who were saying
- 14:21Speaker 10: the same thing. Like, that was a fun ride, but
- 14:23Speaker 10: then afterwards you go, wait, what's this thing and that thing?
- 14:26Speaker 6: You almost have buyer's remorse a little bit after you
- 14:30Speaker 6: see it because the movie does such a great job
- 14:34Speaker 6: of bringing you into the world and tricking you and
- 14:36Speaker 6: using all the big, epic kind of tricks to bring
- 14:40Speaker 6: you into the world. And really, it was like Prometheus.
- 14:44Speaker 6: It falls apart on the details. I have huge issues
- 14:46Speaker 6: with Prometheus.
- 14:46Speaker 9: It falls apart on the details. That's a little unfair
- 14:48Speaker 9: to Star Trek.
- 14:49Speaker 8: It is.
- 14:49Speaker 9: Prometheus is an egregious crime.
- 14:52Speaker 6: But they shared a writer. That's one of the problems.
- 14:55Speaker 6: And you can see that, those fingerprints on both movies.
- 14:58Speaker 9: Was it Lindelof?
- 14:59Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 15:00Speaker 6: Well, it was the lost guy, wasn't it? It was
- 15:01Speaker 6: the lost guy, yeah. You're done writing science fiction. Yeah,
- 15:06Speaker 6: and it was the, because it was the exact same problems.
- 15:09Speaker 6: It was like, you can't introduce the science fiction element
- 15:12Speaker 6: ignore it, or make it magic. And then just, you
- 15:14Speaker 6: have to be a logical programmer.
- 15:15Speaker 10: Oh, you mean like you get on five seasons of
- 15:17Speaker 10: loss and just introduce bullshit and then spend an entire
- 15:20Speaker 10: episode about summoning love affair?
- 15:22Speaker 6: And here's the problem. It's like, in somebody, in a
- 15:26Speaker 6: creator's head, they're like, well, this validates me. You know,
- 15:28Speaker 6: look how great it did. Magic validates me. Yeah, and
- 15:31Speaker 6: so I'm just going to keep doing this. It's like
- 15:32Speaker 6: Pirates of the Caribbean when you look at those movies.
- 15:35Speaker 6: The first one, it was okay. It actually had a
- 15:38Speaker 6: little bit of logic and a script progression to it.
- 15:42Speaker 6: The other ones after that, you're like, well, just kind
- 15:44Speaker 6: of making it up as we go along.
- 15:46Speaker 9: It's like that bullshit ending of Lost.
- 15:50Speaker 7: See, I will give you the big part I agreed
- 15:52Speaker 7: with was Magic Blood. I don't understand the point of.
- 15:55Speaker 6: I mean, that is just such a quick fix. Resurrection Blood?
- 15:57Speaker 6: yeah well yeah magic.
- 15:58Speaker 7: Just magic blood that like fixes all your problems and
- 16:01Speaker 7: like in the old series where it took a movie
- 16:03Speaker 7: to fix that thing we just painted you know the
- 16:05Speaker 7: corner we just painted ourselves into and it didn't work.
- 16:07Speaker 6: And we're done the genesis device yeah was flawed it
- 16:10Speaker 6: didn't work and it was still an entire movie to
- 16:12Speaker 6: get that to work and it was still didn't work so.
- 16:15Speaker 7: I'll give you that one that i definitely had issues
- 16:17Speaker 7: with um the one i was gonna say i think
- 16:20Speaker 7: you were almost like thinking too smart for regular people
- 16:24Speaker 7: Or human beings, really, because I remember you had an
- 16:26Speaker 7: issue with the Uhura fight on there.
- 16:29Speaker 6: I kind of liked that, because I was like.
- 16:31Speaker 9: The fight with Spock on the shuttle?
- 16:32Speaker 6: Yeah, because I was like, that's a relationship.
- 16:35Speaker 7: I was like, Vulcan or not, that dude is in
- 16:37Speaker 7: a relationship right now, and she is pissed.
- 16:40Speaker 6: And the purpose of that scene was like, it was
- 16:42Speaker 6: played for laughs, it was comic relief. The problem with
- 16:45Speaker 6: it is it just didn't read well. It didn't really work.
- 16:48Speaker 10: Some people, some fans of ours who listened to that
- 16:51Speaker 10: and then didn't agree, they were... one of the justifications
- 16:54Speaker 10: that I've heard was that was, these are all the young,
- 16:57Speaker 10: they're all kids, they're all young.
- 16:58Speaker 9: So they're not mature enough.
- 16:59Speaker 6: Then why are they officers?
- 17:00Speaker 5: Why do they have their own ship?
- 17:02Speaker 9: Flying a fucking skillion dollar ship.
- 17:05Speaker 6: Starfleet 90210, is that what we have?
- 17:08Speaker 9: I don't give a shit.
- 17:09Speaker 5: And I'm like, well, if Aaron Spelling gives you this shit,
- 17:12Speaker 5: you can fly.
- 17:14Speaker 6: So Tori's the captain now?
- 17:15Speaker 5: Wait a minute.
- 17:16Speaker 6: And what's really funny is not all of them are
- 17:17Speaker 6: that young. You know, Karl Urban, not in his 20s.
- 17:21Speaker 9: And it's one of my pet peeves that Hollywood, when
- 17:25Speaker 9: they do this. Like, I remember.
- 17:27Speaker 5: Star Trek babies?
- 17:28Speaker 9: No, I remember Apollo 13, the movie. Yeah. I liked
- 17:32Speaker 9: most of it.
- 17:33Speaker 10: When they're in the capsule arguing with each other, I've
- 17:36Speaker 10: heard interviews with the actual astronauts going, we had no
- 17:40Speaker 10: goddamn time to argue.
- 17:42Speaker 9: Because we had to get the fuck back to Earth.
- 17:45Speaker 6: We were going to suffocate in space.
- 17:47Speaker 9: And I hate that when they're like, we need to
- 17:48Speaker 9: put a human element in there. These are the most
- 17:50Speaker 9: trained people in the world, in Star Trek, in the
- 17:53Speaker 9: goddamn galaxy. And they're really going to be like, you're
- 17:56Speaker 9: not my boyfriend. Like, shut up. It demeans the strength.
- 18:01Speaker 10: Of uhura it really does star trek like she is
- 18:04Speaker 10: she oh she's just a high school girl like all
- 18:06Speaker 10: women are dumb teenagers is that what you're saying we're
- 18:09Speaker 10: all high star.
- 18:09Speaker 6: Trek was always a much more mature like i mean
- 18:13Speaker 6: it really was it was always like it was always
- 18:15Speaker 6: science fiction for smart people and it always that's the
- 18:18Speaker 6: way it progressed you know until the last couple tv
- 18:21Speaker 6: shows but um What's interesting, too, is you look at, like,
- 18:25Speaker 6: with J.J. Abrams, really?
- 18:27Speaker 9: Star Trek and Star Wars? Would a young Kate Mulgrew
- 18:28Speaker 9: be arguing with her boyfriend when she first got into
- 18:31Speaker 9: the Federation?
- 18:32Speaker 6: No way.
- 18:33Speaker 7: She was a great representation of a captain and especially
- 18:36Speaker 7: a female captain. I guess we hadn't progressed to that
- 18:39Speaker 7: point yet.
- 18:40Speaker 10: She was a great leader who was also female. She
- 18:45Speaker 10: was a great female leader, but also it wasn't like, oh,
- 18:47Speaker 10: she's a good leader.
- 18:48Speaker 9: For a girl. She was an amazing leader, the way
- 18:50Speaker 9: she was written and the way she acted.
- 18:52Speaker 6: And the way she performed it, that was never an issue.
- 18:54Speaker 6: The issue was that the franchise was so tired by
- 18:59Speaker 6: that time. Like, oh my God, the only thing we
- 19:01Speaker 6: can make it better is, all right, add more Borg.
- 19:03Speaker 6: with breasts uh but but what i.
- 19:06Speaker 1: Mean it's some board titty in there that's how it
- 19:08Speaker 1: works i believe but but now look at like if
- 19:10Speaker 1: you look back when star trek was popular and when
- 19:13Speaker 1: star wars was popular they were just coming out they
- 19:15Speaker 1: were huge franchises uh although star trek was interesting where
- 19:18Speaker 1: it got canceled and then brought back.
- 19:20Speaker 6: Yeah this is how ridiculous it is you know jj
- 19:22Speaker 6: abrams is rebooting both franchises what if when you know
- 19:26Speaker 6: say in the 70s or even the 80s you're like
- 19:28Speaker 6: oh george lucas is gonna do star trek You'd be like, what?
- 19:32Speaker 6: That makes no sense. You know, they're not, they're completely different.
- 19:35Speaker 6: There's more people in Hollywood that can do things that
- 19:38Speaker 6: understand licenses and properties. Like, he was a big Star
- 19:43Speaker 6: Wars fan. I'm excited to see what he'll do with
- 19:45Speaker 6: Star Wars. He admitted, didn't really care for Star Trek.
- 19:47Speaker 5: Great.
- 19:48Speaker 6: Give him the entire property. Well done, Hollywood. So it's really,
- 19:54Speaker 6: it goes to the heart of the problem with Hollywood
- 19:56Speaker 6: is there's more than four people that can make big movies.
- 19:58Speaker 6: There really are. So, you know, open up the Rolodex studios.
- 20:03Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 20:04Speaker 7: Yeah, that one worries me a little bit, just because
- 20:07Speaker 7: they are such different approaches. Which, again, I mean, Star
- 20:09Speaker 7: Trek became very much Star Wars when he took over.
- 20:12Speaker 6: Yeah, he would be, you know, Aronofsky would be a
- 20:14Speaker 6: great director for a Star Trek movie. You look back
- 20:16Speaker 6: at a movie like Pi, you know, or even The Fountain,
- 20:20Speaker 6: you know, there's such an intelligence to that science fiction.
- 20:22Speaker 6: Even The Fountain kind of went everywhere. But with Pi,
- 20:26Speaker 6: you saw that. I'm like, that's hard science fiction. You
- 20:28Speaker 6: could see him, and especially with the way he can
- 20:31Speaker 6: direct actors and relationships with the wrestlers, It would be
- 20:35Speaker 6: a great choice for Star Trek.
- 20:36Speaker 5: It would be interesting.
- 20:37Speaker 6: It would definitely be a different direction for them.
- 20:40Speaker 5: I think, though, with Star Trek, to me, I'm not
- 20:43Speaker 5: the world's biggest Star Trek fan. I've always been.
- 20:45Speaker 6: The Star Wars fan.
- 20:46Speaker 5: Oh, then you should direct one of the movies.
- 20:49Speaker 6: We'll give you the next one.
- 20:50Speaker 5: I've always saw Star Trek the show and Star Trek
- 20:52Speaker 5: the movies as completely different things. The movies are popcorn
- 20:57Speaker 5: fun movies. broad audience star trek the show is a
- 21:02Speaker 5: little bit hard science.
- 21:05Speaker 6: Fiction the medium is the message and.
- 21:07Speaker 5: So star trek the tv show is almost the canon
- 21:10Speaker 5: to me the the movies were crazy you're saving whales
- 21:14Speaker 5: no this this is a dumb plot you know so
- 21:17Speaker 5: the the movies i don't really care about jj abrams
- 21:20Speaker 5: but if they were to come back with we are
- 21:22Speaker 5: going to reboot star trek the series they're going to
- 21:25Speaker 5: have to have a true Star Trek fan to even
- 21:27Speaker 5: go down that path.
- 21:28Speaker 6: Well, what they would do is they would, the way
- 21:30Speaker 6: they have been doing it, I doubt they'd do any
- 21:32Speaker 6: of the characters they've already been done. It's such a
- 21:34Speaker 6: huge world and universe.
- 21:35Speaker 7: I can't believe they did it with the movie, really.
- 21:38Speaker 6: One of those things, that was going to piss off
- 21:40Speaker 6: some nerds. Look how skeptical people were when Next Generation
- 21:42Speaker 6: came out. Like, oh, there's no way this is going
- 21:44Speaker 6: to be any good and this is awful. I remember
- 21:46Speaker 6: Patrick Stewart doing on an interview saying even the studios
- 21:50Speaker 6: thought this is going to tank. We've got one season.
- 21:53Speaker 6: No one's going to watch this. And it was an
- 21:56Speaker 6: instant hit. And Patrick Stewart said as soon as they
- 22:00Speaker 6: saw the ratings, they started hiring more writers and producers
- 22:04Speaker 6: after that because everything was on a shoestring. Those special
- 22:07Speaker 6: effects in the first seasons were rough. And you look
- 22:10Speaker 6: at it too, and that was a series that Gene
- 22:13Speaker 6: Rodbury was still involved with. You have the other series
- 22:17Speaker 6: that were very hit and miss until they just kind
- 22:19Speaker 6: of really went off the rails and then like, hey,
- 22:21Speaker 6: time to give it a rest. Now, I will give J.J.
- 22:24Speaker 6: Abrams a lot of credit. He really did invigorate the franchise,
- 22:27Speaker 6: and I'm excited to see what's going to come next. Okay,
- 22:31Speaker 6: so I don't want to dwell on the Star Trek thing.
- 22:34Speaker 7: The only other one I was going to, well, other
- 22:36Speaker 7: than if you go online, there are geeks, and I'm
- 22:38Speaker 7: going to steal your line, there are geeks in way
- 22:40Speaker 7: deeper basements than you and I.
- 22:42Speaker 6: That have made a list.
- 22:44Speaker 7: Of how many admirals have gone rogue in the different
- 22:46Speaker 7: series over the years. So that idealized, yeah, I was
- 22:50Speaker 7: just like, that can't, because you were saying that. I
- 22:52Speaker 7: was like, yeah, it's kind of weird. But I was like,
- 22:54Speaker 7: that can't be the only time. Like, it's such a
- 22:56Speaker 7: standard plot for any story. Because that was Gene Roddenberry's vision.
- 22:59Speaker 7: That's how it was like the utopian society.
- 23:02Speaker 6: But they've, yeah, they've introduced a bunch of them.
- 23:04Speaker 9: That's the one I was like, okay, that's fair.
- 23:06Speaker 6: They weren't, yeah, but they weren't as brutally cold-blooded as
- 23:10Speaker 6: the killing machines. Yeah, he's crazy. Yeah, he's crazy.
- 23:13Speaker 9: They all had some sort of idealized notion.
- 23:17Speaker 6: Of that they were doing the right thing.
- 23:18Speaker 9: That they were doing something right, and it just was.
- 23:20Speaker 6: Not just a warmonger.
- 23:22Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, this guy was just like.
- 23:23Speaker 6: Oh, it's... Just killing Starfleet officers just because they get
- 23:26Speaker 6: in his way.
- 23:27Speaker 9: Right, oh, he's a Halliburton. Yeah. You know, like this
- 23:30Speaker 9: one was.
- 23:32Speaker 7: and then the only other thing i was gonna say
- 23:33Speaker 7: and it took me i didn't realize that when i
- 23:34Speaker 7: watched it the first time the the carol character like
- 23:38Speaker 7: everybody has issues as to why the hell she's there
- 23:40Speaker 7: other than to be in her underwear which you know
- 23:42Speaker 7: that's fine who doesn't you know who who didn't see
- 23:44Speaker 7: kirk looking at her like that didn't surprise me but
- 23:47Speaker 7: did you realize who that character is in the other timeline.
- 23:52Speaker 13: Yeah that becomes his ex it becomes yeah yeah that's
- 23:54Speaker 13: his baby mama so i'm like obviously they're just planting
- 23:57Speaker 13: that seed like Granted, she should have had a hell
- 23:59Speaker 13: of a lot more to do in this movie, but
- 24:00Speaker 13: I was like, that's the reason she's there. It's because
- 24:03Speaker 13: they're planning for seven movies, and they want to make
- 24:05Speaker 13: sure to work this relationship in somewhere down the line.
- 24:08Speaker 9: So let's just make her show up.
- 24:09Speaker 6: So, yeah, I agree she should have had a lot
- 24:11Speaker 6: more to do.
- 24:12Speaker 9: She should have had a lot more to do, and
- 24:13Speaker 9: then all she does is in her underwear. Like, it's Kirk, right? Like,
- 24:17Speaker 9: she's a cute blonde. She could be in a nun outfit,
- 24:21Speaker 9: and he would be.
- 24:22Speaker 6: He would have still been checking her out.
- 24:25Speaker 7: I did want to ask, did anybody else... Get the
- 24:27Speaker 7: feeling of another movie in that opening scene. Because to me,
- 24:30Speaker 7: it was almost exact. It was almost beat for beat,
- 24:33Speaker 7: and I liked it.
- 24:34Speaker 5: I appreciated it.
- 24:35Speaker 6: Why did he grab the scroll again? To get that little...
- 24:39Speaker 6: To me, I was like.
- 24:39Speaker 9: Someone was like, oh, he grabbed it to distract them.
- 24:41Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 24:42Speaker 10: He intentionally grabbed that to run, and he knew he
- 24:45Speaker 10: was going to get chased and distract them and have
- 24:48Speaker 10: no exit strategy and jump off.
- 24:50Speaker 6: To distract them from not noticing him.
- 24:53Speaker 9: He knew he was supposed to not get.
- 24:57Speaker 6: Yeah, prime directive and wait, now I grab something.
- 24:58Speaker 9: But we grab the skull just in case I break
- 25:00Speaker 9: the prime directive.
- 25:02Speaker 7: Truthfully, I really liked that scene because it was fun
- 25:04Speaker 7: and it did sort of show a dynamic with the
- 25:07Speaker 7: cast that I think was sometimes missing in that first movie.
- 25:10Speaker 6: But I think... as it like started and they started
- 25:14Speaker 6: chasing him like is this just the opening.
- 25:16Speaker 14: To raiders now because there's guys throwing spears at you
- 25:19Speaker 14: and they're tribal dudes and so wait jj abrams is
- 25:22Speaker 14: ripping off spielberg that never happens uh i don't know
- 25:25Speaker 14: i was just like this is really obvious to me
- 25:28Speaker 14: but i mean it's his hero i guess he does
- 25:29Speaker 14: what he thinks is right but i was like go
- 25:32Speaker 14: load up.
- 25:33Speaker 4: I just.
- 25:35Speaker 6: Oh, he went boop-boop?
- 25:35Speaker 9: Yeah, he went boop-boop. Yeah, that's exactly what he did.
- 25:39Speaker 6: And you speak that language. If you need to get it,
- 25:44Speaker 6: we can break here. Oh, let's take a break. Yeah,
- 25:46Speaker 6: take a break. We'll hang out.
- 25:49Speaker 10: Okay.
- 25:50Speaker 9: Sorry, guys.
- 25:51Speaker 6: The road's getting long. I know you don't travel very much.
- 26:19Speaker 4: Golden, pure, creamery butter. Rich, flavorful, satisfying. That's what it
- 26:23Speaker 4: takes for the finest buttered popcorn, and that's what we use.
- 26:26Speaker 4: See for yourself why there's no showtime treat to equal
- 26:29Speaker 4: the crisp, delicious flavor of hot popcorn that's bathed in
- 26:32Speaker 4: real melted butter. It's at the concession stand now.
- 26:50Speaker 3: Everybody's going to Bikini Beach to have fun in the
- 26:55Speaker 3: sun with that musical beach party gang. Frankie Avalon, Annette Funicello,
- 27:02Speaker 3: Martha Heyer, Harvey Lembeck, Don Rickles. and special guest star
- 27:07Speaker 3: Kenan Wynn. I am determined to prove that you young
- 27:11Speaker 3: people are borderline cases leaning toward feeblemindedness with an abnormal
- 27:15Speaker 3: preoccupation with sex. Bikini Beach. Surfing monkey shines versus the
- 27:24Speaker 3: call of love. Bon Zippers rats versus the beach party
- 27:30Speaker 3: gang going drag strip.
- 27:36Speaker 6: A secret weapon.
- 27:37Speaker 2: Yes, love.
- 27:41Speaker 8: A secret weapon. Yeah!
- 27:46Speaker 3: Everybody's going to Bikini Beach.
- 27:48Speaker 6: Do you believe this?
- 27:50Speaker 5: Hey guys, look what I've got.
- 27:52Speaker 6: Check out these awesome earbuds I'm using right now.
- 27:56Speaker 7: Look at that.
- 27:56Speaker 6: That's wood right there. That's actual wood. Why would you
- 28:00Speaker 6: use wood to make technology? Because they're... It's like... They're steam.
- 28:06Speaker 7: Is steampunk really wood?
- 28:08Speaker 6: I thought it was more of a brass thing.
- 28:09Speaker 7: Well, you got to work the wood in to hold
- 28:11Speaker 7: the brass together. These are the fancy high-end steampunk versions
- 28:15Speaker 7: with a mic built in, mind you.
- 28:17Speaker 6: But yeah, where would I get these you wonder? Tweaked Audio.
- 28:24Speaker 6: Way to pitch. You want to hear more, you say? TweakedAudio.com. Hey,

- 28:39Speaker 7: pair in a while and I was using the knockoff
- 28:41Speaker 7: crappy ones I bought at the store. And I got
- 28:44Speaker 7: these and put them in.
- 28:45Speaker 6: I was like, oh, shit, that's right. These are actually
- 28:47Speaker 6: really good. So they are professional quality earbuds, mind you.
- 28:51Speaker 7: And, you know, noise reducing, compatible with your iPods and
- 28:56Speaker 7: most phones, unless you have a dumb phone.

- 30:16Speaker 15: listening to Movie Meltdown.
- 30:24Speaker 9: I'm Chainsaw.
- 30:25Speaker 6: I'm Dave.
- 30:26Speaker 5: We'll see you at the movies.
- 30:34Speaker 4: It's part of your problem, you know. You haven't seen
- 30:37Speaker 4: enough movies. All of life's riddles are answered in the movies.
- 30:42Speaker 4: And now, on with the show.
- 30:45Speaker 6: The End.
- 31:11Speaker 8: So don't see that movie?
- 31:14Speaker 6: I had fun with it.
- 31:16Speaker 9: I just think it has some issues. But that was
- 31:19Speaker 9: just like, boy!
- 31:21Speaker 7: It was almost beat for beat in certain moments from Raiders.
- 31:26Speaker 7: I was just like, we all know he's your hero.
- 31:31Speaker 7: Why wouldn't you disguise it a little and steal from
- 31:33Speaker 7: Lucas for a minute?
- 31:34Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 31:34Speaker 9: Steal from somebody else! We all know you steal from Spielberg.
- 31:38Speaker 9: That's your thing.
- 31:39Speaker 5: That was strange.
- 31:42Speaker 9: That's a little love letter. And that's usually, I mean,
- 31:46Speaker 9: you look at Super 8, I mean, it's so blatantly.
- 31:49Speaker 6: Don't get me started on fucking Super 8. Yeah, well,
- 31:51Speaker 6: I mean, it's so blatantly.
- 31:52Speaker 7: It was great for the first half hour. And again,
- 31:54Speaker 7: that story with the kids is a really good story.
- 31:58Speaker 7: I could care less about the rest of it. But,
- 32:02Speaker 7: I mean, he has the... characters there he's got the
- 32:05Speaker 7: heart of the movie is fine it's all the extremities
- 32:08Speaker 7: that are dying it's like lost 60 percent of the
- 32:13Speaker 7: loss is really good.
- 32:14Speaker 5: The rest of it is the worst i've.
- 32:16Speaker 7: Ever seen yeah after the first like season started and
- 32:21Speaker 7: i kind of saw it was getting to be one
- 32:23Speaker 7: of those you can't just pick up i'm like you've
- 32:24Speaker 7: got to be in from day one i was like.
- 32:26Speaker 5: I don't have time for this.
- 32:28Speaker 9: It's like i don't have as much.
- 32:30Speaker 6: To invest in it Six years later, I was like, yeah,
- 32:33Speaker 6: it's a good thing. I still don't have much time.
- 32:36Speaker 5: Speaking of looking back on when you mentioned the Raiders thing,
- 32:40Speaker 5: my daughter, we were watching, obviously, an episode of Doctor Who.
- 32:44Speaker 5: And there's one episode, they're on a space station. Thousands
- 32:49Speaker 5: of years in the future, blah, blah, blah. It's stranded,
- 32:53Speaker 5: and at one point, the Queen says to the Doctor,
- 33:00Speaker 5: you're our only hope.
- 33:02Speaker 6: And I was like, okay, here we go.
- 33:04Speaker 9: I kept quiet. I kept quiet.
- 33:06Speaker 5: But then the two of them get sucked down into
- 33:10Speaker 5: what looks like a trash compactor, right? And there's trash everywhere.
- 33:14Speaker 5: What year was this? This was, oh, this was, no,
- 33:18Speaker 5: this was 2007, probably. And she goes, what.
- 33:22Speaker 9: Are we watching, Star Wars?
- 33:24Speaker 5: And I was like, I love my children.
- 33:26Speaker 6: Way to call them out.
- 33:28Speaker 5: That's a good moment.
- 33:29Speaker 6: Way to call them out.
- 33:31Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 33:31Speaker 5: Turned out to be they were on a tongue instead
- 33:33Speaker 5: of a trash compactor, but they were feeling around the
- 33:35Speaker 5: ground because they thought something was alive.
- 33:37Speaker 9: Get on top of it.
- 33:39Speaker 5: Yeah. So I was very proud of her.
- 33:41Speaker 9: All right, let's do it. All right.
- 33:48Speaker 6: But yeah, okay, so we can move on from Star Trek.
- 33:50Speaker 6: We've geeked out enough on that. You keep saying that,
- 33:51Speaker 6: yet you haven't done it. Right. Other thing. Let me
- 33:55Speaker 6: tell you about Starfleet Academy.
- 33:56Speaker 9: No, okay.
- 33:57Speaker 7: So i don't know where else do you want to
- 33:59Speaker 7: just kind of hit the list of stuff coming out
- 34:01Speaker 7: or um.
- 34:02Speaker 6: I think whatever you want to do it's always much.
- 34:04Speaker 7: More fun the bigger ones yeah the perspective let's talk
- 34:06Speaker 7: about things we don't know what we're talking about yet
- 34:08Speaker 7: like i.
- 34:09Speaker 5: Said last year prometheus was the best movie i hadn't seen.
- 34:12Speaker 7: Yet that's true and i was looking forward to that
- 34:14Speaker 7: man was i wrong i kind of knew i was
- 34:16Speaker 7: gonna be wrong is the sad part i was like
- 34:18Speaker 7: I'm going to miss so much on this. I have
- 34:20Speaker 7: such high hopes and it's not going to be.
- 34:22Speaker 5: I saw the trailer and I was like, this trailer
- 34:24Speaker 5: is the greatest sci-fi movie I've ever seen.
- 34:26Speaker 6: Don't watch the movie. I should have stopped there.
- 34:28Speaker 9: Yeah, that's it.
- 34:30Speaker 8: Can we hit on The Hangover 3 at some point
- 34:31Speaker 8: just so there can be some purpose to my having
- 34:33Speaker 8: watched it?
- 34:34Speaker 6: Go ahead. Go to town.
- 34:36Speaker 8: No, I mean, that's it. That's really all I have.
- 34:39Speaker 6: That was awesome.
- 34:40Speaker 8: When I was told that this was going to be
- 34:41Speaker 8: a summer movie episode, I'm not a comic book person
- 34:45Speaker 8: or a Star Trek person. So I decided to go
- 34:47Speaker 8: the comedy route.
- 34:48Speaker 5: Or a summer person.
- 34:49Speaker 6: She sees everything.
- 34:50Speaker 5: She sees more than me.
- 34:52Speaker 9: She's a winter poetry person. That's okay.
- 34:55Speaker 8: That's my wheelhouse.
- 34:58Speaker 6: Has anybody noticed how much that term?
- 34:59Speaker 8: We'll be looking forward to it. But so I watched
- 35:02Speaker 8: that one night, and then the next day I watched
- 35:05Speaker 8: The Internship. So that was my summer viewing.
- 35:07Speaker 10: Wow.
- 35:08Speaker 6: I'm sorry. And you haven't hanged yourself?
- 35:10Speaker 9: Wow.
- 35:11Speaker 8: Actually, The Internship was not terrible, and I actually found
- 35:14Speaker 8: it really interesting to watch it back-to-back with The Hangover 3,
- 35:17Speaker 8: mostly because it was exactly the same premise as Old School,
- 35:21Speaker 8: It was like he had sort of borrowed Todd Phillips'
- 35:24Speaker 8: film from 10 years ago. But in doubt, it was
- 35:27Speaker 8: so much heart. It was actually a really lovely sort
- 35:30Speaker 8: of movie. And the fact that he brought Owen Wilson in,
- 35:33Speaker 8: and there were all these pep talks. I'm looking at
- 35:35Speaker 8: the table, and clearly no one has seen this film
- 35:37Speaker 8: but me, or has any intention to do so.
- 35:39Speaker 7: But I was thinking 10 years ago, it might have
- 35:41Speaker 7: been an actual good time to make that movie, where
- 35:44Speaker 7: Google's not really cutting-edge technology right now. It just seems
- 35:47Speaker 7: so dated for them to be excited to go to Google.
- 35:50Speaker 10: Are they spending the whole movie unclear on technology?
- 35:56Speaker 9: We worked in a watch factory where we never had
- 35:58Speaker 9: email accounts.
- 35:59Speaker 8: Well, kind of. But it's also, it's very much old
- 36:02Speaker 8: school in that they have to assemble this team of
- 36:05Speaker 8: misfits who are going to.
- 36:07Speaker 6: Revenge of the nerds.
- 36:08Speaker 8: But it actually, it kind of... And he makes Owen
- 36:12Speaker 8: Wilson the romantic hero. Because Vince Vaughn wrote it and everything.
- 36:16Speaker 8: And so, I don't know. I kind of liked that
- 36:18Speaker 8: he just gave Owen Wilson something to do. And that
- 36:20Speaker 8: he sort of celebrated. Like being in a movie. Like
- 36:23Speaker 8: being in a movie. Like a way to spend his time.
- 36:25Speaker 16: Not good.
- 36:26Speaker 8: And then made him heroic in it, which I thought
- 36:28Speaker 8: was a lovely gesture of friendship.
- 36:30Speaker 5: If Lucy is giving a seal of approval to being
- 36:34Speaker 5: in friendship, it's probably pretty good.
- 36:39Speaker 8: It could have had a lot to do with the
- 36:40Speaker 8: fact that I had suffered through The Hangover 3 the
- 36:43Speaker 8: night before.
- 36:43Speaker 6: At that point, your eyes are like, I just need
- 36:45Speaker 6: to see anything. What did you think of The Hangover 3?
- 36:50Speaker 8: The same thing I thought of The Hangover 2 and
- 36:53Speaker 8: maybe also The Hangover.
- 36:55Speaker 5: Which is?
- 36:56Speaker 8: It was just boring. Well, the thing is, it has
- 37:00Speaker 8: no heart, and the internship actually had a lot of heart.
- 37:03Speaker 8: I mean, those Hangover movies are so cynical at this point.
- 37:06Speaker 8: First one was just one joke, and then the second
- 37:08Speaker 8: one was a repetition of that joke, and then the
- 37:10Speaker 8: third one is just like.
- 37:11Speaker 6: Well, the third one did something different. It had no jokes.
- 37:15Speaker 9: Nice move.
- 37:15Speaker 8: A fresh approach.
- 37:16Speaker 12: Yeah.
- 37:16Speaker 10: It became an action movie where it's just like, oh,
- 37:19Speaker 10: it's not these regular Joes that got into some shenanigans
- 37:21Speaker 10: in Vegas.
- 37:22Speaker 9: They're like accessories to murder.
- 37:24Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 37:24Speaker 9: It was like insane.
- 37:26Speaker 8: It's just movies about terrible people doing terrible things.
- 37:28Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 37:29Speaker 9: It's like, oh, none of this.
- 37:30Speaker 6: Which can be really compelling if done properly.
- 37:33Speaker 4: Right.
- 37:33Speaker 9: But that's not easy to do.
- 37:35Speaker 6: No, it isn't. It's very hard to do but when
- 37:38Speaker 6: it's done right it's hilarious like observe and report is
- 37:41Speaker 6: a good example of that uh the entire black adder
- 37:44Speaker 6: series on bbc is uh is like you're like okay
- 37:48Speaker 6: that's how you do horrible people correctly.
- 37:51Speaker 7: It's it's hard to go that dark and still make
- 37:53Speaker 7: it an enjoyable.
- 37:54Speaker 5: Movie but that's like breaking bad my wife and i
- 37:57Speaker 5: would look at each other goes who are the person
- 37:59Speaker 5: we're rooting.
- 37:59Speaker 6: For yeah yeah exactly what.
- 38:01Speaker 9: This guy right And he's kind of an asshole.
- 38:04Speaker 6: Yeah, he's the worst cancer.
- 38:06Speaker 10: And he just gets worse.
- 38:08Speaker 9: And yet you still root for him.
- 38:10Speaker 5: I'm like, I like the drug dealer only. Like the
- 38:13Speaker 5: old drug dealer kid that can't get his shit together.
- 38:15Speaker 9: That's the only one I like.
- 38:16Speaker 2: I know.
- 38:17Speaker 9: That's the most redeemable guy.
- 38:19Speaker 6: Right. Did we want to address Pain and Gain? Or
- 38:22Speaker 6: should we leave it behind?
- 38:24Speaker 8: I did some research and did notice that it was
- 38:26Speaker 8: an April 11th release.
- 38:27Speaker 6: So it might be. It's a spring film.
- 38:30Speaker 13: Okay.
- 38:30Speaker 8: But you know I love a spring film.
- 38:32Speaker 5: You're a spring kind of guy.
- 38:33Speaker 6: Spring cleaning. Clean out the studio vaults. Get rid of
- 38:37Speaker 6: all these cobwebby movies that no one wants to see.
- 38:39Speaker 7: I just liked your concept and it almost made me
- 38:42Speaker 7: rethink it because I didn't want anything to do with it.
- 38:43Speaker 7: But yeah, the fact that it's all about misinterpreting the
- 38:47Speaker 7: American dream. And if there's ever a director that understands
- 38:51Speaker 7: misinterpreting the American dream, it's Michael Bay.
- 38:53Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 38:54Speaker 6: I was like, you got a point.
- 38:54Speaker 10: If there's ever a guy who doesn't deserve to enjoy
- 38:57Speaker 10: the American dream, it's Michael Bay.
- 38:59Speaker 16: All right.
- 39:00Speaker 6: I thought that was... You know what? There was some
- 39:02Speaker 6: criticism where like, oh, the painting game was Michael Bay's Fargo.
- 39:06Speaker 6: And you know what? What's really interesting is technically that's correct.
- 39:10Speaker 6: But technically it's correct because if you take a horrible,
- 39:14Speaker 6: talentless filmmaker who doesn't understand character, plot, story, action, or
- 39:19Speaker 6: movie making, and you had him make like a really
- 39:23Speaker 6: quirky crime drama, that's what he would make because he
- 39:26Speaker 6: has no idea what to fill the frame with.
- 39:29Speaker 9: That's an insult. to the entire state of North Dakota.
- 39:33Speaker 5: We're sorry.
- 39:34Speaker 7: We take no responsibility. Okay, if we want to move forward,
- 39:38Speaker 7: do we want to just go to Man of Steel?
- 39:39Speaker 5: All right.
- 39:41Speaker 6: Except we don't want to talk about Supergirl movies. Yeah,
- 39:42Speaker 6: I haven't seen this one. Well, none of us have
- 39:44Speaker 6: seen it yet. Yeah, it's not here yet. So, I
- 39:47Speaker 6: don't know.
- 39:47Speaker 2: I'm concerned.
- 39:47Speaker 6: I'm concerned.
- 39:51Speaker 7: He's an odd director, especially for that franchise or new franchise,
- 39:55Speaker 7: whatever they're planning on it becoming.
- 39:57Speaker 9: You know what?
- 39:57Speaker 6: It's really going to boil down to how hands-on Christopher
- 40:00Speaker 6: Nolan was. That was the only good thing was adding him.
- 40:04Speaker 6: In this whole kind of process. Was his name just
- 40:06Speaker 6: slapped on it and Zack Snyder kind of did whatever
- 40:08Speaker 6: he wanted?
- 40:09Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 40:09Speaker 6: Was he involved in the development? Was he looking at Dale?
- 40:12Speaker 6: All that stuff. We don't know. We don't know exactly
- 40:14Speaker 6: how hands-on he was. Now, Zack Snyder is definitely hit
- 40:18Speaker 6: or miss, but the guy definitely has vision.
- 40:20Speaker 7: I mean, he's an amazing filmmaker, it just sometimes misses massively.
- 40:25Speaker 6: You know what Zack Snyder needs? Zack Snyder needs a
- 40:28Speaker 6: Christopher Nolan looking over his shoulder. And if that mix
- 40:33Speaker 6: kind of happens properly, it could be an amazing movie, because...
- 40:37Speaker 6: with Zack Snyder kind of making it look amazing and
- 40:41Speaker 6: just jaw-dropping visuals, and then you have Christopher Nolan adding
- 40:45Speaker 6: all the meat to pretty much the story and characters.
- 40:48Speaker 6: It could be great. So I'm actually really excited about it.
- 40:50Speaker 6: I think it could be really good.
- 40:53Speaker 10: The thing, I've been very excited about it, and we
- 40:56Speaker 10: just had Pete Holmes on the comedy film.
- 40:59Speaker 9: Nerd show we did at the Limestone Festival.
- 41:02Speaker 10: And one of the things that he brought up, which is,
- 41:05Speaker 10: you know, he doesn't, he's always hated Kryptonite. He's always
- 41:09Speaker 10: thinking it's a bullshit plot device, you know, that Superman,
- 41:11Speaker 10: everything's going great, no one can beat him, and then.
- 41:13Speaker 7: It's the only plot device for a Superman movie.
- 41:16Speaker 10: So, he's actually, you know, he's heard that they're not
- 41:21Speaker 10: using it in this film. And I think that, to me,
- 41:24Speaker 10: is really interesting.
- 41:26Speaker 6: Now, I actually don't have the aversion to Kryptonite that
- 41:30Speaker 6: the other people seem to have. And the reason I
- 41:33Speaker 6: like it is because that you know, like when you
- 41:36Speaker 6: have somebody that's that invulnerable, you know, it's kind of
- 41:38Speaker 6: like that yin and yang. Everything's got a weakness. It
- 41:40Speaker 6: doesn't matter how strong or powerful it is. But the
- 41:44Speaker 6: point that I agree with Pete is it's just done
- 41:46Speaker 6: in such a ham-handed way. It was like, all right,
- 41:49Speaker 6: here's kryptonite. Now you have to stop. If kryptonite was
- 41:52Speaker 6: used in a more creative or interesting fashion, like in
- 41:55Speaker 6: the comic books, sometimes you would see different colored kryptonite
- 41:58Speaker 6: that have different Which they've never.
- 42:00Speaker 5: Really done in the live action, the cartoons.
- 42:02Speaker 6: They grabbed it a little bit in one of the
- 42:04Speaker 6: Superman movies when he's sitting in the bar flicking.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Superman 3.
- 42:08Speaker 6: I think it was Superman 3, yeah.
- 42:09Speaker 5: That was just the one they made wrong.
- 42:11Speaker 6: Richard Pryor added tar to it, if I remember correctly. Yeah, yeah,
- 42:14Speaker 6: they touched on it, but it was like, but that's
- 42:16Speaker 6: the kind of way where you could make it a
- 42:18Speaker 6: little more interesting, the whole kryptonite thing. Or is it,
- 42:22Speaker 6: maybe it makes him sick or something like that, that
- 42:25Speaker 6: now there has to be, or makes him weaker or whatever, so.
- 42:29Speaker 6: So I'm not, I'm on board with whatever. I'm like,
- 42:32Speaker 6: I'm keeping an open mind. If they did use kryptonite
- 42:34Speaker 6: in a different way, I'd be on board with it.
- 42:36Speaker 6: If there's no kryptonite in the movie, I don't care.
- 42:37Speaker 6: I'm just, I want to see the movie. Zod made it.
- 42:40Speaker 6: I mean, now it's interesting with, with their casting on
- 42:43Speaker 6: that one.
- 42:44Speaker 9: I think it's great casting.
- 42:45Speaker 6: We need to get him on the show.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:46Speaker 6: And I hope, I hope they, uh, I hope they
- 42:48Speaker 6: make him a little more sympathetic too, because even in
- 42:51Speaker 6: the comic books, you know, Zod was like, he was
- 42:52Speaker 6: a general and, uh, You know, he just, he turned bad. But,
- 42:56Speaker 6: you know, there is a whole backstory back there where
- 42:58Speaker 6: he was looking out for the people of Krypton.
- 43:00Speaker 8: Yeah, I think he's perfect casting for that if anybody
- 43:02Speaker 8: saw The Iceman.
- 43:03Speaker 9: Oh, he's so great.
- 43:04Speaker 8: He's so great in The Iceman. And I left The
- 43:06Speaker 8: Iceman wishing that The Iceman got away with it. And
- 43:08Speaker 8: I was like, oh, his family must feel.
- 43:10Speaker 6: Terrible watching this movie.
- 43:11Speaker 8: And they walked away from him. And clearly this was
- 43:14Speaker 8: a good-souled person. And then I did a little research.
- 43:16Speaker 8: I was like, no, he was a cold-blooded, terrible... He's
- 43:19Speaker 8: the world's most terrible human being. But Michael Shannon did
- 43:22Speaker 8: just imbue him with this real soulfulness that made you.
- 43:25Speaker 10: Which is why he's a good actor and why I
- 43:29Speaker 10: think his Zod is going to be really interesting.
- 43:31Speaker 9: And I think it is going to bring in something.
- 43:32Speaker 6: The only shot of him is just him yelling.
- 43:34Speaker 9: That's all we've seen so far. But I think Michael
- 43:37Speaker 9: Shannon's acting ability is.
- 43:39Speaker 10: Going to bring the Zod that you're talking about in
- 43:42Speaker 10: the comics with the big backstory that has some sympathy
- 43:45Speaker 10: to it. Which I find so interesting and I think
- 43:51Speaker 10: that always makes the best villains. is when there's a
- 43:55Speaker 10: part of you that just goes, or they're just terrifying.
- 43:59Speaker 9: Right. Like Bane is just scary. You have no sympathy
- 44:04Speaker 9: for him.
- 44:05Speaker 10: Well, even then, you kind of do because, oh God,
- 44:06Speaker 10: he was thrown into this pit.
- 44:08Speaker 6: He has a horrible backstory.
- 44:09Speaker 9: He does have a horrible backstory. You see how he
- 44:11Speaker 9: was created and that he has the League of Shadows.
- 44:17Speaker 7: I think this movie hinges on the Zod performance because
- 44:20Speaker 7: I think, like we said, you don't, There's not that
- 44:23Speaker 7: much you can do with Superman. I mean, you have to,
- 44:25Speaker 7: which is why I thought it was weird they give
- 44:26Speaker 7: it to Zack Snyder because he's such a squeaky clean.
- 44:29Speaker 6: Superhero that it's hard to do. I think that's still
- 44:32Speaker 6: kind of a cliche because with Hollywood, I mean, there
- 44:34Speaker 6: is a lot you can do with Superman. It hasn't
- 44:36Speaker 6: been done. It's really, there's, you know, years and years
- 44:40Speaker 6: of really interesting movies and, not movies, but comics and stories.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Too good.
- 44:45Speaker 6: Like when you look at... you know, all of the
- 44:48Speaker 6: other villains, like Brainiac. Why haven't we seen Brainiac yet? Who, like, literally.
- 44:52Speaker 10: Do you remember the depiction of Superman in the Dark
- 44:54Speaker 10: Knight graphic novel?
- 44:55Speaker 9: You know what I mean? Who was sort of Reagan's lapdog.
- 44:58Speaker 8: Yes.
- 44:58Speaker 9: You know what I mean?
- 44:59Speaker 5: That would be interesting.
- 45:00Speaker 9: Wasn't that great? And he fought Batman and he was so, like.
- 45:04Speaker 6: He was the Boy Scout. He really was.
- 45:06Speaker 9: He was the Boy Scout and he was like, oh, Bruce,
- 45:08Speaker 9: you're crazy.
- 45:09Speaker 10: Holy war. Like, you're the reason they outlawed us. You know, like,
- 45:13Speaker 10: his sort of anger towards.
- 45:17Speaker 10: Bruce Wayne's fanaticism like what an interesting character that.
- 45:21Speaker 6: Would be yeah there's so much you could do and
- 45:22Speaker 6: by the way that's when they released the animated versions
- 45:25Speaker 6: of those Dark Knight Returns the part one and part
- 45:26Speaker 6: two they're really good most.
- 45:29Speaker 7: Of the animated series yeah the Red Hood I mean
- 45:32Speaker 7: that was all really good yeah.
- 45:34Speaker 6: The next big one, I guess, well, Monsters University. They're
- 45:37Speaker 6: going to make a ton of money regardless, so who cares?
- 45:39Speaker 6: I mean, you can't... They're going to do what they do.
- 45:42Speaker 6: But it's a question of do they deserve to? And
- 45:45Speaker 6: the answer is, if it's good, yes.
- 45:47Speaker 9: The first one was fun.
- 45:48Speaker 6: I mean, it's not the.
- 45:50Speaker 7: Best thing they'd ever done, but it's definitely above just
- 45:53Speaker 7: about every other kids' movie out there because it was Pixar.
- 45:55Speaker 6: Right.
- 45:57Speaker 5: Pixar, I.
- 45:59Speaker 5: Until Cars 2, I said they could do no wrong.
- 46:05Speaker 5: Even A Bug's Life, great.
- 46:06Speaker 6: It was great.
- 46:08Speaker 5: But Cars 2 really... They were phony.
- 46:12Speaker 6: Wait till Planes 1, 2, and 3.
- 46:13Speaker 7: We've got to get that trilogy out there.
- 46:16Speaker 5: So, yeah, we'll see. I mean, you know, this feels
- 46:19Speaker 5: like a money grab, but I liked.
- 46:21Speaker 6: Monsters, Inc. It's fun. Let's see. We'll see.
- 46:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 46:26Speaker 6: I think, and the other thing is you've got to
- 46:27Speaker 6: remember with Pixar, no one could keep that streak going forever. Yeah.
- 46:31Speaker 6: I mean, the fact that they did so many amazing
- 46:33Speaker 6: movies over and over and over again with none of
- 46:37Speaker 6: them that were mediocre, it's pretty remarkable.
- 46:39Speaker 7: I think it's because they were sort of flying under
- 46:41Speaker 7: the radar. Like, it took so many before people started
- 46:43Speaker 7: putting that pressure on them. Like, People would just see them,
- 46:46Speaker 7: and they would like them, but it's.
- 46:47Speaker 6: Still, like, in the beginning, they weren't making tons of money. Like,
- 46:50Speaker 6: it seemed like it was.
- 46:51Speaker 7: Video before, like, yeah, like, Toy Story made all its
- 46:54Speaker 7: money on video, way after the fact, you know? It's like,
- 46:57Speaker 7: they weren't cashing in until, and then at that point,
- 46:59Speaker 7: there was so much pressure that, yeah, it's like, something's
- 47:02Speaker 7: gotta give, so.
- 47:04Speaker 6: Next would be World War Z. Yeah, I'm a little
- 47:07Speaker 6: worried about this one.
- 47:08Speaker 5: Yeah, jury's out on that one, I don't know. I.
- 47:10Speaker 10: I maintain that this is going to be a good movie.
- 47:14Speaker 10: And I realize now I'm going way out on an island.
- 47:18Speaker 6: I have hope for it.
- 47:19Speaker 9: Four more people are like, they're like falling by the wayside. Like, no, Graham,
- 47:23Speaker 9: this is going to blow. And all the.
- 47:25Speaker 10: Stories of the reshoots and the three different endings and
- 47:27Speaker 10: all that stuff. I think, and I know I am
- 47:30Speaker 10: swinging for the fences with this one. It is going
- 47:33Speaker 10: to be one of those rare instances that all the
- 47:38Speaker 10: chaos of it It ends up going to be a
- 47:42Speaker 10: good movie. Why do I say this? Because Brad Pitt
- 47:47Speaker 10: doesn't make shitty films. He makes movies that might miss
- 47:50Speaker 10: the mark or whatever. But Brad Pitt is so involved
- 47:55Speaker 10: in his career. And because he's one of those, he's
- 47:59Speaker 10: on the short list of A-list actors.
- 48:02Speaker 9: He can come in and say, I want this, this,
- 48:04Speaker 9: and this. And he's always doing it.
- 48:06Speaker 6: Wasn't his production company put this together too?
- 48:09Speaker 10: It's not his ego. It's not this other stuff. He's like,
- 48:12Speaker 10: I want to make a good film. And he knows
- 48:16Speaker 10: how to do that.
- 48:16Speaker 9: He's been doing it for 15, 20 years.
- 48:19Speaker 6: Now, I will predict, regardless of whether the movie is
- 48:22Speaker 6: amazing or unbelievably awful, huge opening weekend. It doesn't matter.
- 48:27Speaker 6: It's zombies. I mean, at this point, anything zombies.
- 48:30Speaker 10: I think I'll say this. I doubt if it is
- 48:33Speaker 10: going to be awful. I think there's going to be
- 48:35Speaker 10: some cool shit in there that everyone's.
- 48:37Speaker 9: Going to like.
- 48:38Speaker 6: They're putting that on the poster.
- 48:41Speaker 9: It won't be awful. A must-see.
- 48:44Speaker 5: You won't ask for your money back.
- 48:46Speaker 9: I think there's going to be some scenes that are
- 48:48Speaker 9: just going to be breathtaking. And I think that you're
- 48:52Speaker 9: going to.
- 48:54Speaker 10: I think it's going to be one of the cooler
- 48:57Speaker 10: visions of a zombie film because we've always seen.
- 49:01Speaker 9: it in it's just this town or this street and
- 49:05Speaker 9: how they do it which is sure that's compelling this is.
- 49:07Speaker 6: One of the first ones where you see the whole world.
- 49:09Speaker 10: I asked them when I saw The Purge I always
- 49:11Speaker 10: ask where's the rest what the fuck's going on in
- 49:13Speaker 10: the rest of the world even The Walking Dead which
- 49:15Speaker 10: is a series I really like I always go just
- 49:17Speaker 10: America where's the rest of the world what the fuck
- 49:19Speaker 10: is going on in the rest of the world you
- 49:20Speaker 10: know any of them so this one is going to
- 49:22Speaker 10: show us what the rest of the world is doing
- 49:26Speaker 10: and how different cultures and governments are going to react
- 49:31Speaker 10: to this and I think that is going to be
- 49:33Speaker 10: the part that makes you go holy shit in addition
- 49:37Speaker 10: to uh.
- 49:40Speaker 9: I like frenetic crazy zombies.
- 49:42Speaker 5: You know? I think that's cool.
- 49:44Speaker 7: I'm worried more about the CG. I'm kind of iffy
- 49:47Speaker 7: on the scenes that I've seen. I think there's so
- 49:49Speaker 7: much potential for that story. And I do want to
- 49:51Speaker 7: see that scope and like the vision of it.
- 49:53Speaker 5: I'm worried about it.
- 49:54Speaker 6: And if you just take it scene by scene, the
- 49:55Speaker 6: scenes are amazing. I mean, everything from the traffic scenes
- 49:59Speaker 6: to even the scene on the plane, it's terrifying. And
- 50:02Speaker 6: it's amazing. So we'll just see how it comes together
- 50:04Speaker 6: as a movie.
- 50:06Speaker 7: Yeah. I just don't want it to. Go down that
- 50:09Speaker 7: road that, what's the Will Smith one? I really love
- 50:14Speaker 7: the whole opening in that. And it just gets bogged
- 50:16Speaker 7: down by the bad CG zombies. Whoever said we should.
- 50:19Speaker 6: Do CG zombies should hopefully got fired.
- 50:22Speaker 5: I hope so.
- 50:23Speaker 10: And they tried to give this couple CG zombies personalities.
- 50:28Speaker 9: And that was like, dumb.
- 50:29Speaker 10: I think where this one, and I could be wrong,
- 50:32Speaker 10: what I've only seen thus far is that they are
- 50:36Speaker 10: like a hive. So that, to me, if we're just
- 50:40Speaker 10: seeing them in this giant chaos, like massive lunatics running
- 50:45Speaker 10: at you, I think that's where you'll go, oh, God,
- 50:47Speaker 10: this is believable.
- 50:48Speaker 7: And there's no other way to do that. So, I mean,
- 50:50Speaker 7: I'd give them, you know, there's no other way to
- 50:52Speaker 7: make that happen. But it still worries me. Like, that's
- 50:55Speaker 7: the part I think that worries me most is the CG.
- 50:58Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:58Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 51:00Speaker 6: What is next? The Heat?
- 51:02Speaker 7: The Heat.
- 51:04Speaker 5: The Heat?
- 51:05Speaker 7: That's the Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy vehicle. They're both really
- 51:11Speaker 7: entertaining and seem like great people.
- 51:14Speaker 6: It could be okay.
- 51:15Speaker 10: It could be one of these movies, and studios will
- 51:18Speaker 10: do this, especially with comedies. When there's a smart comedy,
- 51:23Speaker 10: they will cut a dumb trailer.
- 51:25Speaker 6: To bring in.
- 51:27Speaker 5: The dumb masses of people.
- 51:29Speaker 9: You can cut a smart trailer.
- 51:34Speaker 10: That will get huge numbers of people. Like, assuming everyone's
- 51:38Speaker 10: an idiot, I think is a mistake. It's made over
- 51:41Speaker 10: and over again.
- 51:42Speaker 9: It's made over and over again.
- 51:43Speaker 10: Because, again, I think Paul Feig is a very good director.
- 51:44Speaker 10: Melissa McCarthy is fucking hilarious. Sandra Bullock in the right
- 51:48Speaker 10: movie can do it.
- 51:49Speaker 6: But assuming that everyone's an idiot and you have a
- 51:51Speaker 6: cable news network. You're doing okay.
- 51:55Speaker 5: Well, I think we were just talking about Bridesmaids. I
- 51:59Speaker 5: saw that and Hangover 2 together. We were talking about
- 52:03Speaker 5: double features. And Bridesmaids was billed as dumb. All you saw...
- 52:09Speaker 5: And it wasn't.
- 52:09Speaker 6: It was a smart movie. The trailer looks really dumb.
- 52:11Speaker 5: You had people in the theater that were kind of like, wait,
- 52:14Speaker 5: this is a drama. Some of the parts of it.
- 52:17Speaker 5: And it was a, you know, it was... there was
- 52:19Speaker 5: a lot of thinking going on in that film. Whereas
- 52:22Speaker 5: the hangover, not hangover two, not so much. Uh, but
- 52:24Speaker 5: it was, yeah, the trailer.
- 52:26Speaker 10: Was like, Oh, the girl shits her pants or whatever.
- 52:28Speaker 9: And it was like, that's such a small part of that.
- 52:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 52:31Speaker 8: Well, the good news is they didn't waste all the
- 52:32Speaker 8: good jokes in the trailer. So, right.
- 52:36Speaker 6: It wasn't a great trailer.
- 52:37Speaker 5: Um, is that a Nickelodeon or what?
- 52:40Speaker 9: You guys know you have a carousel downstairs?
- 52:43Speaker 5: I'm going to go right in.
- 52:44Speaker 9: I don't know what you're talking about.
- 52:45Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 52:47Speaker 7: Uh if we want to stray away from really dumb
- 52:49Speaker 7: wide release movies i do really want to see a band.
- 52:52Speaker 6: Called death is gonna hit limited oh it's great uh
- 52:56Speaker 6: we have a review on this site um dean haglin.
- 52:59Speaker 7: It's online but i'm like if it hits here in
- 53:00Speaker 7: the theater i kind of might wait it's only about
- 53:03Speaker 7: a month yeah it looks really awesome um okay i'll
- 53:07Speaker 7: jump to the next really big one lone ranger.
- 53:12Speaker 6: We just talked to one of the guys that worked
- 53:13Speaker 6: on it.
- 53:14Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 53:15Speaker 5: What was his take?
- 53:16Speaker 6: Well, he was the grip, so he... He knows the
- 53:19Speaker 6: real story. Yeah, he actually thought that the scenes he
- 53:21Speaker 6: worked on, he thought it looked kind of cool, like
- 53:23Speaker 6: parts of the Caribbean... with a train yeah.
- 53:25Speaker 9: Because they built like a these giant sets.
- 53:28Speaker 6: A real working yeah i think it looks ridiculously horrible
- 53:31Speaker 6: that's my take on.
- 53:32Speaker 10: It it's funny like cowboys and aliens i went this
- 53:36Speaker 10: is going to be dumb fun lone ranger looks just.
- 53:38Speaker 7: Yeah just dumb without the fun well and i remember
- 53:40Speaker 7: when they first announced it we said this on the
- 53:42Speaker 7: show we were just like.
- 53:43Speaker 6: Who are they appealing to like.
- 53:45Speaker 7: Because he's usually aiming those for almost like a kid market.
- 53:48Speaker 7: I'm like, what kid knows what.
- 53:49Speaker 6: The Lone Ranger is? Or cares.
- 53:51Speaker 5: And cares.
- 53:52Speaker 7: Like, what kid is into cowboys at this point? Like,
- 53:54Speaker 7: there's so many other ways you could go and, like,
- 53:57Speaker 7: latch on to that audience.
- 53:58Speaker 6: But cowboys, I mean.
- 53:59Speaker 9: Because that TV series in the 50s was huge. Kids
- 54:03Speaker 9: went crazy.
- 54:04Speaker 6: It's a different generation. And Johnny Depp's the Lone Ranger, right?
- 54:07Speaker 10: No.
- 54:09Speaker 6: He thinks he's an Indian. He wants to be Tonto.
- 54:11Speaker 6: You don't argue with Johnny. Yeah, right.
- 54:14Speaker 5: He's a comedian.
- 54:15Speaker 6: Well, he thinks he's a lot of things.
- 54:17Speaker 7: The thing I wonder about it, though, is do you
- 54:19Speaker 7: think Tim Burton gets jealous when Johnny puts on the
- 54:23Speaker 7: makeup and funny costumes and when he does it for
- 54:25Speaker 7: that other guy?
- 54:26Speaker 5: Somebody else.
- 54:26Speaker 7: Because he's done it for five movies with him now.
- 54:29Speaker 7: He's rivaling the Tim Burton thing. He's moving up there.
- 54:33Speaker 9: Gore's taking him away. Do you think they have, like, a.
- 54:35Speaker 5: Little jealous, you know, love or something? A little love
- 54:38Speaker 5: triangle there.
- 54:38Speaker 6: But I wanted to make a movie with.
- 54:40Speaker 15: You, Johnny.
- 54:40Speaker 6: Johnny Depp had an open relationship.
- 54:42Speaker 7: Thank you.
- 54:43Speaker 6: I think it has to do with Johnny Depp's deal
- 54:45Speaker 6: with the Disney studio.
- 54:48Speaker 7: It's funny that he's got another one that he's sort
- 54:50Speaker 7: of racking up. And he's always a weirdo in his movies, too.
- 54:53Speaker 6: Why else would you?
- 54:54Speaker 7: The most normal you can make him is when he's
- 54:56Speaker 7: a lizard. That's the closest to a real character he's played.
- 55:00Speaker 5: Well, you know, for so long he played the I'm
- 55:03Speaker 5: not going to be the big budget actor. And now he's...
- 55:06Speaker 5: He's Will Smith.
- 55:07Speaker 9: I'm getting old.
- 55:07Speaker 5: I'm catching on. He's Will Smith. He's the, you know,
- 55:11Speaker 5: 100 million or nothing is what I want from this movie.
- 55:13Speaker 6: I remember them saying that they had to fight to
- 55:14Speaker 6: get him into Pirates of the Caribbean. I was like, oh,
- 55:17Speaker 6: everyone wants Johnny Depp.
- 55:18Speaker 16: Yeah.
- 55:19Speaker 6: He's like, I've got this house to pay for in France.
- 55:21Speaker 6: So rack him up.
- 55:22Speaker 8: Vineyard.
- 55:24Speaker 7: What else?
- 55:26Speaker 5: Pacific Rim.
- 55:27Speaker 6: Do we want to jump that far ahead? kind of
- 55:30Speaker 6: that same thing I don't know this is another one
- 55:32Speaker 6: where it looks like you know what would be kind
- 55:34Speaker 6: of cool if it's like an old school type Godzilla
- 55:36Speaker 6: movie which Guillermo del Toro might do he knows how
- 55:39Speaker 6: to do that stuff or it could be just like
- 55:42Speaker 6: you know Transformers it looks a.
- 55:44Speaker 10: Little Transformers-y to me Transformers meets Battleship.
- 55:48Speaker 6: But I have such faith in him I like him
- 55:50Speaker 6: but he's you know he's a really good and smart
- 55:53Speaker 6: director so I don't know again giving him the benefit
- 55:56Speaker 6: of the doubt here.
- 55:57Speaker 10: Yeah it might be that same thing like When you
- 56:00Speaker 10: get a smart director that makes a smart, big-budget action film,
- 56:04Speaker 10: the studio.
- 56:04Speaker 9: Then cuts together a dumb trailer. Yeah, yeah.
- 56:08Speaker 7: My only worry is how much, again, because now the
- 56:10Speaker 7: budgets are so huge on his movies, how much the
- 56:12Speaker 7: studio gets involved. If you let him make his movie,
- 56:15Speaker 7: he makes amazing movies. But if they start controlling everything
- 56:19Speaker 7: because he's got this hundreds of millions of dollars at stake, yeah,
- 56:22Speaker 7: it could mess it up.
- 56:25Speaker 6: I'm concerned on that, I suppose. So is the Calliope movie.
- 56:31Speaker 5: Have you seen the ads for R.I.P.D.? That looks dumb.
- 56:35Speaker 6: Oh, my God, yeah.
- 56:36Speaker 9: Well, I just watched it today. It's Men in Black.
- 56:39Speaker 6: I was like, it's Men in Black with the undead
- 56:41Speaker 6: instead of aliens. Like, almost exactly. Men in Black, but dumber.
- 56:44Speaker 7: You've got the young guy and the old grizzled cop,
- 56:47Speaker 7: only he's a cowboy now, and I'm just like, it's
- 56:49Speaker 7: exactly the same.
- 56:50Speaker 6: You really need a movie like that with the R.I.P.D.
- 56:53Speaker 6: during a summer to kind of be like the control
- 56:56Speaker 6: group for good or bad movies. Because then you go, okay, well,
- 57:00Speaker 6: it wasn't as bad as R.I.P.D. And then Black 2
- 57:04Speaker 6: was worse, so we got that going for us. So
- 57:05Speaker 6: you look at it like that. There's never been a
- 57:08Speaker 6: summer season where some huge budget horrible movie hasn't come out.
- 57:13Speaker 6: I mean, you're always going to have a Green Lantern.
- 57:14Speaker 6: You're always going to have one. And it's like, oh, okay, well,
- 57:17Speaker 6: it's almost calculated and weird. All right, well, this is
- 57:19Speaker 6: our big budget movie that we all think is going
- 57:21Speaker 6: to do great, but we know is going to tank
- 57:22Speaker 6: and no one's going to like. That's this one. Although.
- 57:25Speaker 8: Wasn't After Earth already that movie?
- 57:28Speaker 6: Not as huge of a budget. These were even bigger.
- 57:31Speaker 9: Or weren't they the same movie?
- 57:33Speaker 5: I can't decide.
- 57:34Speaker 6: So it's going to be either Lone Ranger or R.I.P.D.
- 57:37Speaker 6: is going to be the worst movie this summer. One
- 57:39Speaker 6: of those two.
- 57:41Speaker 9: With After Earth in the three position. Right.
- 57:46Speaker 6: I thought about going to see it for summer movies,
- 57:50Speaker 6: and I went... I just don't want to see it.
- 57:52Speaker 6: I couldn't bring myself to do it either.
- 57:54Speaker 5: Yeah, and that's what I came to.
- 57:56Speaker 6: I was like, I just don't go to a summer
- 57:58Speaker 6: movie because it's a summer movie. If it looks good, maybe.
- 58:02Speaker 9: But I'm like, that one just looks like a bad movie.
- 58:04Speaker 8: Yeah, and I'm kind of a completionist. I think I've
- 58:07Speaker 8: seen all the M. Night Shyamalan. And they're usually delightful
- 58:09Speaker 8: to just not laugh at him, but totally laugh at him.
- 58:13Speaker 8: And this one just seems tedious.
- 58:15Speaker 9: It's not an M. Night Shyamalan movie. I mean, it's
- 58:18Speaker 9: a Will Smith film.
- 58:18Speaker 6: It's as much as his last.
- 58:19Speaker 9: One wasn't an M. Night Shyamalan.
- 58:20Speaker 6: Will Smith just gave him some work, because after.
- 58:22Speaker 9: The Happening, he's not been.
- 58:26Speaker 5: Well, and then Avatar.
- 58:27Speaker 6: What was that?
- 58:28Speaker 5: Last Airbender.
- 58:29Speaker 6: That, again, didn't seem like one of his movies. Yeah,
- 58:32Speaker 6: but it made a lot of money, though, because it
- 58:33Speaker 6: was a kid's movie, pretty much.
- 58:35Speaker 5: My kids. It's the first film that they've ever... They're
- 58:39Speaker 5: nine and seven now, but it was the first film
- 58:41Speaker 5: they ever said, this is boring. Something that was made
- 58:44Speaker 5: for them. And they liked the Airbender stuff. They'd watched
- 58:46Speaker 5: all the cartoons. And they're like, this is boring. About
- 58:50Speaker 5: halfway through. And they got up and just did something else.
- 58:52Speaker 5: I'm like, okay.
- 58:53Speaker 6: That's bad.
- 58:54Speaker 9: I don't need to know anything else.
- 58:55Speaker 6: Daddy, put Blade Runner back on.
- 59:00Speaker 7: I watched the trailer today for Red 2.
- 59:03Speaker 6: Is it just the new Expendables other version? Yeah, it
- 59:06Speaker 6: really feels like that now. You know, Red 1 was
- 59:09Speaker 6: kind of fun, but again, it was a one joke
- 59:11Speaker 6: kind of thing. Do we need to see another one?
- 59:12Speaker 6: And the answer is no.
- 59:13Speaker 7: I mean, it looks like there's funny moments in it,
- 59:16Speaker 7: but again, and it's also Switch directors, I noticed, because
- 59:19Speaker 7: that's kind of what I like. That's the best thing
- 59:21Speaker 7: about the Red The first one was the fact that
- 59:23Speaker 7: it kept that graphic novel style. It really did not,
- 59:28Speaker 7: you know, when it would go to the postcards, it
- 59:29Speaker 7: would go to the little animated sequences in between cities.
- 59:32Speaker 6: Yeah, I don't know. It was at least kind of fun.
- 59:35Speaker 6: One of those sequels that's completely unnecessary. Cashing in.
- 59:39Speaker 9: Have you seen the thing? Our show's going to start
- 59:41Speaker 9: in about 10.
- 59:41Speaker 8: 15 minutes.
- 59:42Speaker 6: Okay, we can wrap it up then.

- 1:04:35Speaker 6: I hate her in movies.
- 1:04:37Speaker 9: So anyway.
- 1:04:38Speaker 8: My brother had a great idea for a cop show though,
- 1:04:41Speaker 8: which was going to be her and, oh, what's his name?
