- 0:26Speaker 2: Welcome to me Eater Radio Live. It's eleven am Mountain Time.
- 0:31Speaker 2: That's one pm for our friends in Kalamazoo, Michigan, on
- 0:35Speaker 2: Thursday May twenty second, exactly one week before my forty
- 0:40Speaker 2: seventh birthday. Okay, yeah, I'm fresh out of a yoga studio.
- 0:45Speaker 2: But right now we're live for me Eater World headquarters
- 0:48Speaker 2: in Bozeman. I'm your host, Yanisma tell Us, and today
- 0:52Speaker 2: I'm joined by Brody Henderson and Corey Caulkins. On today's show,
- 0:58Speaker 2: we're gonna chat mountain lions with my friend Mart George.
- 1:02Speaker 2: We're trying a new segment called gear Talk, where we
- 1:04Speaker 2: talk about equipment we love. We'll pause for listener feedback,
- 1:08Speaker 2: so get those questions coming in the chat. We each
- 1:12Speaker 2: brought in a special item that will share and show
- 1:14Speaker 2: and tell. We might have a conversation with fishing guy
- 1:18Speaker 2: Josh Miller and his Lucky Fishing Charm and Turkey co
- 1:22Speaker 2: Captain Ryder. I don't know if I pronounced that right.
- 1:26Speaker 2: It's got kind of a funny spelling. We'll discuss haircuts
- 1:30Speaker 2: as well, but first we're going to tell hunting stories.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Corey Brody. Great to see you, fellas. Corey, do you
- 1:37Speaker 2: smell that updog?
- 1:39Speaker 3: You know we had about a dozen hot dogs in
- 1:42Speaker 3: here last week? Is that the updog you're referring to?
- 1:45Speaker 2: What's up dog? Is the answer to my question?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Oh what's up dog?
- 1:49Speaker 2: Thank you?
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah? Okay, not much.
- 1:51Speaker 2: Gay For those of you listening in at home, These
- 1:53Speaker 2: boys thought that joke would really land with you guys,
- 1:56Speaker 2: So I hope you're all giggling.
- 1:58Speaker 4: That wasn't my joke. That was Corey's joke.
- 2:00Speaker 3: Ori and Phil, Hey, this is your script. Just remember that.
- 2:04Speaker 2: I'm owning it. I'm gonna own it. It does smell.
- 2:09Speaker 2: I'm not smelling it, but you guys are saying you
- 2:11Speaker 2: smell hot dogs because a week ago Randall was in
- 2:13Speaker 2: here pounding hot dogs. Did anybody else have any I
- 2:16Speaker 2: had one?
- 2:17Speaker 3: Yeah, Phil had one. I think Lake and Tony Peterson
- 2:20Speaker 3: had one. It was dog week, so we celebrated four
- 2:23Speaker 3: legged dogs and the food variety hot dogs, the Wiener dog.
- 2:27Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm kind of sorry I missed out on that.
- 2:30Speaker 3: You should have been here. Yeah, we had some steamed
- 2:31Speaker 3: buns and some hot mustard.
- 2:33Speaker 2: Super tasty hot mustard as in spicy or warmed up.
- 2:38Speaker 3: Well, it was warmed up when you put it on
- 2:39Speaker 3: the hot dog.
- 2:41Speaker 4: I like sweet hot mustard.
- 2:43Speaker 3: Oh, I like the spicy brown.
- 2:46Speaker 2: We recently at Turkey Camp had Olympia provisions frankfurter. Those jokers.
- 2:54Speaker 2: I'm not kidding. I didn't measure them, but they're over
- 2:57Speaker 2: a foot long. It says right on the package. More
- 3:01Speaker 2: meat than your bunk can handle.
- 3:03Speaker 4: Wow, So did you double bottom?
- 3:06Speaker 2: Uh?
- 3:06Speaker 1: No?
- 3:07Speaker 2: I cut him in half and went went to two
- 3:10Speaker 2: francs in one.
- 3:11Speaker 4: Bun, cook him on sticks or on a stove, a stove.
- 3:15Speaker 2: Top yep, yep. Just made it quick and easy and
- 3:18Speaker 2: got everybody fed. But yeah, extremely tasty frankfurt. They also
- 3:23Speaker 2: make this sausage become fond of. It's a I don't know,
- 3:29Speaker 2: pretty plain Jane pork sausage, but it stuff. It's got
- 3:33Speaker 2: some chunks of Swiss cheese in it, and then smoked
- 3:35Speaker 2: just a little bit delicious. Wow. So kind of Olympia prevision.
- 3:39Speaker 2: Like a cheddar brought, or like a cheddar brought but
- 3:43Speaker 2: upscale up high end, yes, no high tempt cheese in there, right.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah, where can you find these?
- 3:51Speaker 2: It's legit. I believe you can get them. I know
- 3:54Speaker 2: for sure because the owner was telling me that he
- 3:56Speaker 2: recently got into Whole Foods, which he was very happy about.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But I think you can get him all over the place.
- 4:02Speaker 2: But yeah, Olympia Provisions. Check it out. Yeah, it's Memorial weekend.
- 4:05Speaker 2: Go get your hot Oh yeah, there you go. You
- 4:07Speaker 2: want to try something different than just the old Oscar
- 4:10Speaker 2: Meyer hunt stories. Who wants to go first?
- 4:16Speaker 4: Well, you're you're up first. It looks like, oh well,
- 4:19Speaker 4: unless you want to be like the big Finally, I'm happy.
- 4:22Speaker 2: Listen, I got it. I got a couple of dandies.
- 4:26Speaker 2: I'm gonna start with this one. Have you guys ever
- 4:29Speaker 2: heard Steven Ranella blow on a crow call?
- 4:33Speaker 4: Yeah, but he's not I know where you're going with this.
- 4:37Speaker 4: I don't think he's trying to sound like a crow
- 4:39Speaker 4: He's just trying to make a bunch of like irritating noise.
- 4:43Speaker 2: You're one hundred percent right. I know this as well.
- 4:47Speaker 2: I've always been like right next to him, right when
- 4:49Speaker 2: he blows his loud one and then he goes I
- 4:51Speaker 2: know it doesn't sound like a crow call, but it
- 4:53Speaker 2: gets results, you know, And I'm like okay, cool, Yeah,
- 4:56Speaker 2: that works. Okay, this is what happened this weekend though.
- 4:59Speaker 2: Maybe and my youngest are out, get on a bird
- 5:03Speaker 2: in the roost, aren't quite in the right spot, have
- 5:06Speaker 2: a hand, fly down just out of range. But then
- 5:09Speaker 2: she goes over little rise. Gobbler follows her, so we
- 5:12Speaker 2: end up sort of paralleling them along. He's gobbling decent.
- 5:15Speaker 2: We're like peeking over these little hills. I can see them.
- 5:17Speaker 2: They're in this giant medal. So we're kind of pinned,
- 5:21Speaker 2: and I'm telling Mabel, listen, we're just gonna be patient,
- 5:24Speaker 2: and when they make a mistake by going into a
- 5:27Speaker 2: little drawer around a corner, we're gonna make a move.
- 5:30Speaker 2: And Maybel don't care if we call the bird in
- 5:32Speaker 2: or if she bush wackx it right, she just wants
- 5:34Speaker 2: a dead gobbler. So we're sitting there being patient, just
- 5:38Speaker 2: kind of watching them feed through this metal, and all
- 5:41Speaker 2: this sudden I hear wo w W and I look
- 5:48Speaker 2: at Maybe like, what the hell was that?
- 5:51Speaker 1: You know?
- 5:51Speaker 2: She's like, I don't know. And a couple of minutes
- 5:55Speaker 2: go by and it didn't just it just didn't register
- 5:57Speaker 2: with me at first. And a couple minutes go by.
- 6:00Speaker 3: Woe wee.
- 6:01Speaker 5: I go, oh, that's someone like replicating Stephen Ranella's or
- 6:06Speaker 5: Steve's call. I doubt I think he was in Alaska,
- 6:11Speaker 5: but I'm like, it was very startling to me. Well,
- 6:14Speaker 5: sure enough, we're like watching these turkeys and all of
- 6:17Speaker 5: a sudden, those turkeys are like doing this.
- 6:20Speaker 4: How close was it, like, did it sound like that
- 6:23Speaker 4: guy was on tap of you?
- 6:24Speaker 2: No, because we eventually saw him. So basically, there was
- 6:27Speaker 2: a big giant meadow that kind of led up to
- 6:29Speaker 2: this hill, and he was on top of the hill.
- 6:31Speaker 4: But he was after the same birds.
- 6:34Speaker 2: Well I don't know if he was because he was
- 6:36Speaker 2: shot calling, yeah right, so I don't know if he knew.
- 6:39Speaker 2: He had probably heard those birds from a distance and
- 6:41Speaker 2: they had come in and was trying to, you know,
- 6:43Speaker 2: relocate him. Again, I don't know for sure if these
- 6:47Speaker 2: turkeys saw the guy, because not long after we saw
- 6:51Speaker 2: the turkey spook, I see the guy like hot footing
- 6:53Speaker 2: it across the ridge trying to catch him, which is crazy.
- 6:56Speaker 2: He ain't gonna catch a turkey after you spook him,
- 6:58Speaker 2: you know. But I'd always agree with Steve, like, oh,
- 7:03Speaker 2: you're probably right, You're just making a loud noise, you'd
- 7:06Speaker 2: get a shock gobble. Great, these turkeys might have had
- 7:10Speaker 2: an adverse reaction to that sound, sure, because they definitely
- 7:14Speaker 2: when they heard that we were looking right at them,
- 7:17Speaker 2: their heads popped up and they were like, what's up,
- 7:21Speaker 2: you know, and they sort of started looking. And then again,
- 7:24Speaker 2: I don't know at what point they saw the dude,
- 7:27Speaker 2: or if they saw the dude, but it didn't last
- 7:28Speaker 2: much longer, and Mabel had her first experience of what
- 7:31Speaker 2: it's like hunting public lane when it doesn't go right.
- 7:34Speaker 4: It's kind of it'd be interesting to know if the
- 7:36Speaker 4: noise is what spooked him. I was in Pennsylvania a
- 7:40Speaker 4: couple of years ago turkey hunting, and we were hunting
- 7:42Speaker 4: kind of a small couple hundred acres and there were
- 7:46Speaker 4: some other dudes hunting the next property over, and first
- 7:50Speaker 4: thing in the morning, like we happen to be right
- 7:52Speaker 4: on the edge of that, you know, like the property line,
- 7:55Speaker 4: and I was cutting loose with a coyote call, and
- 7:58Speaker 4: this other turkey hunter like pops up next to us.
- 8:01Speaker 4: He's like, we don't use those to shut like he
- 8:03Speaker 4: was pissed that I was using a coyote Howler, which
- 8:06Speaker 4: I've always had like excellent results with, Like before fly down,
- 8:11Speaker 4: He's like that just scares the turkeys. Like I don't know,
- 8:14Speaker 4: it's worked pretty good for me in the past. But
- 8:17Speaker 4: maybe a noise could, you know, an adverse noise could
- 8:20Speaker 4: do it.
- 8:22Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 8:22Speaker 3: I was hoping you were going to say, after you
- 8:24Speaker 3: heard that noise that you looked over and saw a
- 8:26Speaker 3: blue jay or something actually making the noise.
- 8:29Speaker 2: I wish. Yeah, No, it was. It was startling and
- 8:33Speaker 2: it was definitely out of place. It just took me
- 8:36Speaker 2: a second to register exactly what the hell it was.
- 8:39Speaker 3: Well, did you guys get any birds? Then after that mishap.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Mabel did not. We end up we moved spots and
- 8:45Speaker 2: did a not a big loop, not a power loop,
- 8:48Speaker 2: but we did another loop. And I'm proud of her
- 8:50Speaker 2: because the couple days before we did do a power
- 8:53Speaker 2: loop and eleven year old, I think she's stuck with
- 8:55Speaker 2: me for like seven miles oh a pound in the
- 8:59Speaker 2: ground and making lots of crow calls and loud yelps
- 9:03Speaker 2: with no zero responses. We had some crappy weather. Some
- 9:10Speaker 2: wind makes it tough, you know, anytimes sun's out, guns
- 9:14Speaker 2: out with turkeys, you know, when the sun's out, they're
- 9:16Speaker 2: playing ball, and it's nice they're playing ball. When it ain't. Sure,
- 9:20Speaker 2: you can still kill them, but it's just it's not
- 9:23Speaker 2: as much fun. It's not as easy, for sure. So
- 9:26Speaker 2: we ended up killing uh, I don't know. We killed
- 9:31Speaker 2: Aina killed the tom at a different location on the
- 9:34Speaker 2: way out there Thursday morning, and I doubled up on Jake's.
- 9:39Speaker 2: My wife doubled up on Jake. She and I were together.
- 9:42Speaker 2: She shot one. The rest of them were staying around,
- 9:44Speaker 2: and she looks at me. I'm like, yeah, shoot another one.
- 9:46Speaker 4: Oh yeah. When a gang of them comes in and
- 9:50Speaker 4: you're holding two tags.
- 9:51Speaker 2: Yeah, you know. A couple guys on Instagram, you know,
- 9:56Speaker 2: had to say something about because I was like, well,
- 9:59Speaker 2: tom's are hard to find. So I was happy that
- 10:01Speaker 2: when we shot these jakes and they're like, well, yeah, no,
- 10:03Speaker 2: wonder there's toms are hard to find when you're pounding
- 10:05Speaker 2: the jakes.
- 10:08Speaker 1: There.
- 10:08Speaker 2: Certainly there is some truth to that, but also hunting
- 10:11Speaker 2: public land, it's like and all the other things that
- 10:15Speaker 2: love to eat turkeys. Right, it's hard to say that
- 10:18Speaker 2: if us killing two jakes would have equalled more jakes
- 10:21Speaker 2: next year, or if it's gonna be the or sorry
- 10:24Speaker 2: more Tom's next year, or if it's gonna be the
- 10:26Speaker 2: same amount. Certainly there would have been two more that
- 10:28Speaker 2: maybe would have made it. But we all know that.
- 10:31Speaker 2: You know, what are the chances that turkey makes it
- 10:33Speaker 2: from egg to two year old gobbler? It's like one
- 10:35Speaker 2: in fifty or something crazy like them.
- 10:38Speaker 4: Yeah, Like I get it, like the not killing Jake.
- 10:41Speaker 4: Things like maybe back east where there's just a lot
- 10:44Speaker 4: more hunters and a lot more hunting pressure, and some
- 10:47Speaker 4: of those turkey populations are yeah, on their way down.
- 10:52Speaker 4: But it's just a different situation out here.
- 10:56Speaker 2: Oh for sure. Yeah, Brent Reeves tell you it's sacrilege,
- 10:59Speaker 2: you know, do it down there. They just will not
- 11:01Speaker 2: shoot jakes unless you're a kid where it's your first
- 11:03Speaker 2: time hunt hunt. And the way I'm looking at it,
- 11:06Speaker 2: I'm like, man, that's turkey schnitzel walking around on today, and.
- 11:10Speaker 4: It's still like you're taking whether it's a gobbler or jake,
- 11:13Speaker 4: you're taking a turkey out of the population.
- 11:17Speaker 3: Right, you know, Well you can shoot hens in the
- 11:19Speaker 3: fall breeding season. Yeah, well in Montana. Yeah, referring to so.
- 11:28Speaker 2: Yeah, everything was bushwhacked, didn't call in nothing in Montana.
- 11:33Speaker 4: Listen, this is I've been wanting to have this conversation
- 11:36Speaker 4: about bushwhacken for.
- 11:37Speaker 2: A while, Like, what's happened?
- 11:40Speaker 6: I had a drop for this.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Oh no, it's like there are there's a certain contingent
- 11:45Speaker 4: of turkey hunters that really look down their nose at bushwhacken,
- 11:50Speaker 4: like the purity of calling them in. I get it,
- 11:53Speaker 4: But if you've ever tried to, like stock a turkey,
- 11:58Speaker 4: you might like, if you haven't tried it and then
- 12:00Speaker 4: you go try it, you might have a different opinion
- 12:02Speaker 4: about it because they're not easy to stop.
- 12:04Speaker 2: I guarantee you that half the people that look down
- 12:08Speaker 2: on it is because yeah, they haven't tried it, or
- 12:11Speaker 2: they or they have a little bit and they can't
- 12:13Speaker 2: do it right because it's too hard to Like, it's.
- 12:16Speaker 4: Way harder than stocking a spot in stock rifle, hunt
- 12:21Speaker 4: for mule, deer, elk or whatever.
- 12:23Speaker 3: Oh yeah, man, try stocking an eagle in the tree.
- 12:25Speaker 3: They got the same eye sight.
- 12:26Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. I always say, man, a turkey doesn't
- 12:30Speaker 2: have to hundred yards two hundred yards, doesn't have to
- 12:33Speaker 2: look over and go, oh I just saw Corey Kulkin
- 12:35Speaker 2: skyline himself. He just sees like some hat brim Yeah,
- 12:40Speaker 2: move ninety degrees and he goes, I don't know what
- 12:43Speaker 2: that was exactly, but I'm gonna just go the other
- 12:46Speaker 2: directions just to be sure. Because ever since I was born,
- 12:51Speaker 2: ever since I came out of my mom's kloac, something's
- 12:54Speaker 2: been trying to eat. Yeah, listen, it's just the way
- 12:59Speaker 2: it is. I still do. I love calling them in, Yes,
- 13:02Speaker 2: which is why I'm going to tell you this story.
- 13:04Speaker 2: Because in Colorado a bush whacked one two. I couldn't
- 13:09Speaker 2: call one in there. They were super hand up. But
- 13:12Speaker 2: I get to Wisconsin, I got one day to hunt, well,
- 13:16Speaker 2: I had two, but I knew the second day was
- 13:18Speaker 2: just going to pour rain all day, so it wasn't
- 13:21Speaker 2: gonna be a good day at turkey hunt. So I
- 13:24Speaker 2: have kind of chased a couple off the roost, but
- 13:27Speaker 2: they get onto the neighbors and I can't call them
- 13:30Speaker 2: back in. And long story short, I've criss crossed four
- 13:33Speaker 2: hundred acres for like four hours, maybe longer, yeah, because
- 13:37Speaker 2: I probably started at five. Now it's noon. I'm heading
- 13:40Speaker 2: back camp, kind of worn out, coming down one last
- 13:43Speaker 2: ridge still calling, and I get an answer. Sweet, do
- 13:48Speaker 2: a little loop. I kind of know where they're at.
- 13:51Speaker 2: I'm set up on this I set up on this
- 13:52Speaker 2: little bench, and I got the roll of the bench.
- 13:55Speaker 2: Definitely not fifteen yards away, maybe closer to ten. It's
- 13:59Speaker 2: not far I tried to get. I tried to back
- 14:01Speaker 2: off the edge a little bit so I could have
- 14:04Speaker 2: a little more room to work. But everything behind me
- 14:06Speaker 2: was kind of ex there's no shade. And right where
- 14:09Speaker 2: I was there was a pine tree and it was shaded.
- 14:11Speaker 2: I was like, man, it'd be better to hide in
- 14:13Speaker 2: the shade. So I sit down. I don't even call.
- 14:17Speaker 2: I just do a couple scratches in the leaves bah
- 14:21Speaker 2: and there's two birds, like right, gobble on top of
- 14:24Speaker 2: each other. Got my gun up, I'm ready, and I
- 14:27Speaker 2: can hear him walking. That's one of the beautiful things
- 14:30Speaker 2: about hunting them in the eastern deciduous forest, man, is
- 14:33Speaker 2: when they're on those dry, crunchy oak leaves, you can
- 14:37Speaker 2: just hear them coming. I can taste the schnitzel at
- 14:40Speaker 2: this point, you know, well, the first one pops up,
- 14:44Speaker 2: blue and white head head pops up, looks for half
- 14:49Speaker 2: a second full strut. You know, I'm like, oh sweet,
- 14:54Speaker 2: and I don't shoot. I hesitate for whatever reason, because
- 14:58Speaker 2: I was just enjoying the show. I guess. Well, where
- 15:01Speaker 2: he popped up just his right my lookers left, there's
- 15:04Speaker 2: like a double trunked oak, and he like immediately is
- 15:07Speaker 2: behind it, and.
- 15:10Speaker 4: Which normally is a good thing because you can like
- 15:12Speaker 4: totally get into position right right.
- 15:14Speaker 2: But there's two birds, so I'm thinking, well, no big deal,
- 15:18Speaker 2: I'm just gonna track through that tree. When he pops
- 15:21Speaker 2: out the other side, gonna I'm gonna roll him. You know,
- 15:24Speaker 2: he's close. How close, like I said, less than fifteen Well,
- 15:29Speaker 2: I get like halfway through this double trunk tree and
- 15:31Speaker 2: I just look out of the corner of my eye
- 15:33Speaker 2: and the second gobbler's head pops up. Well, this dude
- 15:36Speaker 2: is not white and blue. It's full red. And when
- 15:40Speaker 2: I see him, I'm thinking, okay, I should probably need
- 15:42Speaker 2: to swing back and shoot him. Well as I'm just
- 15:45Speaker 2: thinking that that bird puts one time and is in
- 15:48Speaker 2: it on his wings, and the other bird is on
- 15:50Speaker 2: his wings. I never even seen this the first one again,
- 15:53Speaker 2: and both of them pitch off into the woods, never
- 15:57Speaker 2: to be touched by Yanni's tss Wow. Moral of the
- 16:03Speaker 2: story is like, take your first I wasn't in like
- 16:09Speaker 2: full kill mode even though I had just been pounding
- 16:14Speaker 2: it for seven eight hours. And here's my opportunity. I
- 16:18Speaker 2: could have rolled him, and I just hesitated, and there
- 16:22Speaker 2: you go. It was bad. Like my stomach. I haven't
- 16:26Speaker 2: had like a stomach in the in the bottom of
- 16:29Speaker 2: my was This wasn't what I'm trying to say, like
- 16:31Speaker 2: the you know when you get that pit feeling in
- 16:34Speaker 2: your in your stomach.
- 16:35Speaker 3: And say, my stomach falls out of itself.
- 16:37Speaker 2: Yeah, something like that. Like I haven't had that that
- 16:39Speaker 2: bad for a while. Like I was close to camp
- 16:42Speaker 2: five minute walk and I almost didn't want to go
- 16:45Speaker 2: back to tell the story because it was hurting me
- 16:47Speaker 2: so bad.
- 16:48Speaker 4: Yeah, some of them that I muffed it. It's good
- 16:51Speaker 4: to have those hunts now and then that really hurts.
- 16:53Speaker 2: Yes, it's good to be humbled. That's why I love
- 16:56Speaker 2: the Wild Turkey because that joker humbles me. And and
- 17:00Speaker 2: uh yeah, so that's about all of my turkey hunting stories.
- 17:06Speaker 4: Yeah, a little a little while back, I was out
- 17:10Speaker 4: with my older son and uh sprung him out of
- 17:15Speaker 4: school after he had a good baseball game the night before,
- 17:18Speaker 4: and we got into the spot, slept it, slept in
- 17:23Speaker 4: the truck, got up, hiked into our spot, hit the
- 17:28Speaker 4: coyote haller a few times, didn't hear anything. Hit it again,
- 17:31Speaker 4: didn't hear anything. Hit it again, like real aggressively, and
- 17:35Speaker 4: wam three gobbles. I'm like, okay, I kind of know
- 17:39Speaker 4: where're at, but we we're just like a little too
- 17:43Speaker 4: late with the light and so like I didn't want
- 17:46Speaker 4: to push it and get in there tight and have
- 17:48Speaker 4: malready on the ground and see us.
- 17:50Speaker 2: So we set up.
- 17:52Speaker 4: It was probably I don't know, it was more than
- 17:55Speaker 4: two hundred yards away, right, but I just didn't want
- 17:59Speaker 4: to move. I was like, we're just gonna be patient
- 18:01Speaker 4: and they'll come, like and we I called and they'd answer.
- 18:04Speaker 2: I called.
- 18:05Speaker 4: They weren't getting any closer. We ended up sitting in
- 18:08Speaker 4: that spot for an hour and it was cold, like
- 18:12Speaker 4: like cold enough that I was getting ready to be like,
- 18:14Speaker 4: screw it, We're gonna walk just to warm up and
- 18:16Speaker 4: get closer. And we hear like obviously in range, but
- 18:25Speaker 4: the same thing over a little lip. This hent just
- 18:28Speaker 4: starts making a racket like yelping and cutting and yelping
- 18:33Speaker 4: and cutting to the point where I was looking for you,
- 18:35Speaker 4: to the point where I was like, Hayden, I think
- 18:38Speaker 4: there's a dude down there, because it was just it
- 18:40Speaker 4: sounded almost unnatural. It was so like aggressive and loud,
- 18:44Speaker 4: you know what I mean. I was like, I think
- 18:46Speaker 4: there's a guy in here with us, And I was
- 18:48Speaker 4: like my heart was just like broken at that point.
- 18:53Speaker 2: But then I see Hayden gun.
- 18:55Speaker 4: I see Hayden like shift his gun this way, and
- 18:58Speaker 4: I see that hen's.
- 18:59Speaker 2: Head popped up.
- 19:01Speaker 4: I was like, don't shoot, that's a hen. She ends
- 19:04Speaker 4: up coming into I don't care decoys a lot, but
- 19:07Speaker 4: I had him that time, and we had a quartz
- 19:10Speaker 4: strut jake and then a hen on the ground. She
- 19:13Speaker 4: came up to those decoys puffed up like a gobbler, strutting,
- 19:18Speaker 4: making all kinds of noise, like not paying any attention
- 19:21Speaker 4: to the Jake decoy, just walking circles around that hen,
- 19:25Speaker 4: very irritated, and then kind of like gave up on
- 19:30Speaker 4: it and wandered off. And then we see a lone
- 19:34Speaker 4: gobbler out at like eighty ninety yards and he takes
- 19:37Speaker 4: a long time coming in. He gets to like, oh,
- 19:41Speaker 4: thirty five forty and I'll tell Hayden to cut loose
- 19:44Speaker 4: on him. Immediately after he shoots, we hear three gobbles
- 19:51Speaker 4: also in range, like right from where that hen came from.
- 19:55Speaker 4: I'm like, can you see him?
- 19:56Speaker 6: Can you see him?
- 19:57Speaker 4: Can you see him? And finally it's like I see him.
- 19:59Speaker 4: And they get in decoys and do the little dance
- 20:02Speaker 4: around the decoys and when we get a couple of those.
- 20:07Speaker 4: Nice you had three gobblers in one morning, well one gobbler,
- 20:11Speaker 4: oh to Jays. Yeah, so that was exciting because he's
- 20:14Speaker 4: never had that kind of show before and it like
- 20:18Speaker 4: reinforced to me and definitely him like if you sit tight,
- 20:23Speaker 4: like good things will happen.
- 20:24Speaker 2: Oh yeah. So I'm guilty of walking too much when
- 20:28Speaker 2: it's a Turkey season for sure. Yeah.
- 20:32Speaker 4: Last weekend of the season this weekend here in Montana.
- 20:35Speaker 4: So I'm gonna take my younger kid. We're going camping,
- 20:37Speaker 4: and we're going to camp in a spot where we
- 20:39Speaker 4: might have a sh shot at a at a turkey nice.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Good. So, so he hasn't been out at all, just
- 20:46Speaker 2: timing man sports and whatnots. Yeah, yeah, priorities.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Yeah, I was in town and country the other day,
- 20:59Speaker 3: and it was coming around the poultry aisle and saw turkey,
- 21:02Speaker 3: and I went and crept in real slow, and then
- 21:04Speaker 3: I went up and smacked him. He was frozen. So
- 21:07Speaker 3: that was my turkey hunting I did this year.
- 21:09Speaker 6: My congrats.
- 21:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I didn't buy him, but I could have could
- 21:12Speaker 3: have could have tagged that one, could have.
- 21:13Speaker 2: Tagged that one.
- 21:14Speaker 3: But I've been bear hunting.
- 21:15Speaker 2: Yep, you've been bear hunting. Yeah. How many days did
- 21:18Speaker 2: you put in bear hunting? Man?
- 21:19Speaker 3: It was pretty quick this year. Only three. Typically I
- 21:22Speaker 3: hunt I don't know, ten to fourteen days. It's easy
- 21:25Speaker 3: for these long days to just get in a couple
- 21:27Speaker 3: hours after work, and I call that a day because
- 21:29Speaker 3: it ends up being an eight hour adventure.
- 21:31Speaker 2: Yep.
- 21:33Speaker 3: But I went the last week of April, spotted a
- 21:37Speaker 3: bunch of bears. Ended up going back to the same
- 21:39Speaker 3: spot the first weekend in May and stayed overnight. Spotted
- 21:42Speaker 3: a bear in the evening, and then in the morning,
- 21:46Speaker 3: was hyper focused on the drainage that I saw him
- 21:48Speaker 3: in and found him again about two miles away. Closed
- 21:52Speaker 3: the distance to.
- 21:53Speaker 2: Two miles from where you first inspired him, or two
- 21:55Speaker 2: miles from where you were at.
- 21:56Speaker 3: About two miles from where I first spotted him. Sorry,
- 22:00Speaker 3: I glassed him up two miles away, what I'm trying
- 22:03Speaker 3: to say. And then probably an hour and a half later,
- 22:06Speaker 3: I was within ninety yards of him and I shot
- 22:08Speaker 3: him on the run running away. Biggest bear I've ever harvested.
- 22:11Speaker 3: He spooked him, I did me, Yeah, yeah, I was
- 22:15Speaker 3: trying to play the wind as the thermals were switching around.
- 22:18Speaker 3: They moved so much all the time, but in the spring,
- 22:21Speaker 3: the bruins especially are just cruise in Roman looking for
- 22:24Speaker 3: that fresh patch of grass or new flowers or something dead.
- 22:28Speaker 3: And I watched this guy cruise probably a solid half
- 22:31Speaker 3: a mile, and he luckily stopped in the drainage that
- 22:34Speaker 3: I last watched him go into.
- 22:36Speaker 4: But you couldn't see him until you were on top
- 22:38Speaker 4: of it.
- 22:38Speaker 3: Right, Yeah, he went into this stick not super thick,
- 22:41Speaker 3: but thick enough to where I couldn't see him until
- 22:42Speaker 3: I was on him and got up into this into
- 22:45Speaker 3: the drainage that he was in, and figured he had
- 22:48Speaker 3: left because I didn't see him. I was about to
- 22:50Speaker 3: set up in predator call and I heard a stick
- 22:52Speaker 3: pop right below me and then just saw a flash
- 22:54Speaker 3: of black probably that was probably forty yards away, and
- 22:58Speaker 3: then he would I could tell he was running away
- 23:01Speaker 3: and there was this little gap between some a tree
- 23:03Speaker 3: and a cliff, and I shot him right through that
- 23:06Speaker 3: little gap, probably about ninety yards.
- 23:08Speaker 2: Could was he full on hauling ass or fast.
- 23:10Speaker 3: As he could go? He's a he had a big
- 23:13Speaker 3: butt on him, so he couldn't go very fast.
- 23:16Speaker 2: I mean embarrassed that. You know they do thirty forty
- 23:18Speaker 2: miles an hour.
- 23:19Speaker 3: Yeah, this guy, like I could tell by the way
- 23:21Speaker 3: he was running, was huge. And I knew he was
- 23:23Speaker 3: big when I saw him from miles away, like I
- 23:25Speaker 3: wanted to kill him. I could tell it was a
- 23:26Speaker 3: bore from that far away.
- 23:28Speaker 2: Uh.
- 23:28Speaker 3: And I saw him the night before.
- 23:30Speaker 2: And did he have to leave it?
- 23:33Speaker 3: No, it was so close that I just put it
- 23:35Speaker 3: right behind the shoulder and that's where it went.
- 23:37Speaker 4: Did you bring in a picture of him?
- 23:39Speaker 3: No, I didn't, got it up on my Instagram.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I saw them Seaman Calkins great big nogging on him.
- 23:47Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:48Speaker 2: Yeah, that looked like it looked like a bandy.
- 23:50Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 23:50Speaker 3: I'm tickled his skull. I mean it hasn't had time
- 23:53Speaker 3: to you know, do the the green scored the skull
- 23:56Speaker 3: at twenty inches.
- 23:58Speaker 4: So which is being seen minimum mm hmm.
- 24:01Speaker 3: So it might shrink under that again, we'll see. But yeah,
- 24:04Speaker 3: got the hide in the freezer, fat in chunks, ready
- 24:07Speaker 3: to render. Meets in the freezer, feeling good.
- 24:11Speaker 2: Nice. What are you gonna do with the hide?
- 24:13Speaker 3: I'd like to get a rug made, but we'll see.
- 24:15Speaker 3: I'm gonna have to save up a couple of paychecks
- 24:17Speaker 3: for that one.
- 24:18Speaker 2: Dude. It's not cheap, I know.
- 24:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 24:21Speaker 2: I don't want to say I'm going on a guaranteed hunt.
- 24:23Speaker 2: But the outfitter that I'm going with next week in Manitoba,
- 24:28Speaker 2: he's texting me, I think two days in a row
- 24:30Speaker 2: and one days, like we killed four last night And
- 24:34Speaker 2: the next day he's like, we killed five last night.
- 24:36Speaker 2: I'm like, oh, on is that like you forgot about
- 24:39Speaker 2: one and that was from two nights ago, or you
- 24:42Speaker 2: guys killed nine bears in two days. It's like, oh yeah,
- 24:44Speaker 2: we got nine and two days. And then he just
- 24:46Speaker 2: like lists all of the numbers baited. You know in Manitoba.
- 24:51Speaker 2: Sounds like there's a lot of bears there, so not
- 24:55Speaker 2: guaranteed but high probability. Yeah, I'm not looking forward to
- 25:02Speaker 2: the rug bill.
- 25:04Speaker 4: Yeah, it's a big one I've got.
- 25:05Speaker 2: I think I'm just gonna tan it and just hang it.
- 25:08Speaker 3: It depends on how big.
- 25:09Speaker 4: I was just talking about this man, like that's what
- 25:12Speaker 4: I did with my first bear, which was a giant,
- 25:15Speaker 4: And for two years I just looked at that tan
- 25:18Speaker 4: thing hanging there, just like wishing I had gotten a
- 25:21Speaker 4: rug maid and then I had a rug made out
- 25:22Speaker 4: of it.
- 25:23Speaker 3: Yeah, if they have a big old noggin, I mean,
- 25:25Speaker 3: I feel like it's worth foaming that out just so
- 25:27Speaker 3: you can relive that.
- 25:28Speaker 2: Did it cost you any less or more when you
- 25:31Speaker 2: got a taxi? It'll cost you a few.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Hundred less if you get it tanned first, because otherwise
- 25:36Speaker 4: they got to send it off to get tanned before
- 25:38Speaker 4: they make the rug.
- 25:39Speaker 2: Yeah, because I don't. I wanted to sit right on
- 25:43Speaker 2: the floor in front of my wood right would burn
- 25:46Speaker 2: and stove, and I don't really have that set up
- 25:48Speaker 2: yet for it, so I don't. I don't need the
- 25:50Speaker 2: rug right now.
- 25:51Speaker 3: Yeah, we'll see what kind of bear you get. See
- 25:53Speaker 3: how big his head is first. That's exciting, though, that's.
- 25:57Speaker 4: Some newspaper up in that head. After you get oh yeah,
- 26:00Speaker 4: there you.
- 26:00Speaker 2: Go, all right? Do we need to move on, Phil,
- 26:03Speaker 2: I think it's time. All right. Well those were good
- 26:05Speaker 2: hunting stories, fellas, Thank you, all right? Next, Oh, catch
- 26:12Speaker 2: Crayfish Counting the Stars is now available in paperback.
- 26:15Speaker 4: Right here here it is.
- 26:17Speaker 2: Why does it take take them like two years to
- 26:21Speaker 2: decide to put something out in paperback? So the time.
- 26:24Speaker 4: Varies, but it's the decision that the publisher makes based on,
- 26:28Speaker 4: you know, when they think the timing is right for
- 26:30Speaker 4: a paperback.
- 26:31Speaker 2: But obviously it's based on probably on sales of the
- 26:34Speaker 2: sure art cover too, right, Yeah, yeah, yeah, So it's
- 26:37Speaker 2: done well enough enough to release it in paperback.
- 26:41Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, So it's out now. Lots of cool activities
- 26:46Speaker 4: in there for for your kids, outdoor activities, Corey, what's
- 26:50Speaker 4: your what's your favorite one in there?
- 26:52Speaker 1: Man?
- 26:52Speaker 3: There's a lot of good stuff in here, but how
- 26:54Speaker 3: many of you actually done with your kid?
- 26:58Speaker 2: Man Marshall, To.
- 26:59Speaker 3: Be honest, I haven't looked through the whole book. I
- 27:01Speaker 3: this is one of those where you could just like
- 27:02Speaker 3: flip to a page, yeah, and then you know, like
- 27:05Speaker 3: find the the most recent chapter that they're talking about
- 27:08Speaker 3: and just go from there. Like a couple of winters ago.
- 27:11Speaker 3: We flipped to the make your own aquarium, and we
- 27:14Speaker 3: did that, caught a little uh really perch from a
- 27:17Speaker 3: local pond and maybe threw them in there find an antler.
- 27:21Speaker 3: That's pretty fun to do this the time of year.
- 27:23Speaker 3: But I flipped to go rock hounting, and we're gonna
- 27:26Speaker 3: go look for some quartz and agates this weekend.
- 27:30Speaker 2: Oh nice.
- 27:30Speaker 3: It kind of just spun off reading this book. Great
- 27:34Speaker 3: ideas in there.
- 27:35Speaker 2: Yeah, and that's easy to do right there. Go for
- 27:37Speaker 2: a walk and pick some rocks. Oh, easy peasy. You'll
- 27:41Speaker 2: go for just those two rocks. But your kid will
- 27:43Speaker 2: come back with a box of rocks. Oh, it could
- 27:47Speaker 2: just be gravel. Yeah.
- 27:48Speaker 4: I've had to rewild some rocks recently.
- 27:51Speaker 2: Oh, I do all the time. Yeah, because my wife's
- 27:54Speaker 2: my wife is bad about it. The kids are kind
- 27:56Speaker 2: of like e but my wife like will not let
- 27:59Speaker 2: a piece of pet trified would stay on the banks
- 28:01Speaker 2: of the yellows. It's coming home for sure.
- 28:04Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm be honest. What's your what's your favorite one?
- 28:08Speaker 2: I'll be honest. I haven't done many, uh, but I
- 28:10Speaker 2: did do one before the book was out, and then
- 28:13Speaker 2: wrote the the little how to to Do It, which
- 28:17Speaker 2: was to build a PVC bow, which is an idea
- 28:20Speaker 2: I think I got from Jimmy Miller. But uh, yeah, man,
- 28:23Speaker 2: it's super easy. And uh, you still need to make
- 28:27Speaker 2: some arrow Is there how to make some arrows? Along
- 28:29Speaker 2: with the.
- 28:30Speaker 4: No, we didn't go that far. That's that's getting serious.
- 28:34Speaker 2: Yeah, so you gotta have we I just used old
- 28:38Speaker 2: hunting arrows of mine. But you just take a chunk
- 28:41Speaker 2: of PVC and some string and cut some notches in
- 28:44Speaker 2: the PVC and use some tape for a little handle
- 28:47Speaker 2: in a in a arrow rest and uh, you got
- 28:51Speaker 2: yourself a bow that Uh my kids they ran around
- 28:54Speaker 2: in Princess.
- 28:55Speaker 4: I remember when they were little running around. Yeah, yeah,
- 28:59Speaker 4: just flinging those bars all around. See an arrow.
- 29:03Speaker 2: Yeah, you gotta gotta wear a helmet in the backyard.
- 29:07Speaker 2: What about what's you? What's your?
- 29:09Speaker 4: There's a couple in there that I'm partial to. The
- 29:12Speaker 4: track and animal and the read animal sign one. I
- 29:14Speaker 4: think that teaches kids a lot, like looking at poop,
- 29:19Speaker 4: looking at whatever hair, feathers, whatever they can find, you know,
- 29:23Speaker 4: maybe it's a snake skin on the ground. Like I
- 29:26Speaker 4: just think kids are like naturally, Like the biophilia thing
- 29:32Speaker 4: is like just built into them. So like, those are
- 29:35Speaker 4: a couple of activities that play into that that I
- 29:38Speaker 4: like a lot, and it's going to teach them to
- 29:40Speaker 4: be a better hunter, you know. But there's I don't know,
- 29:45Speaker 4: seventy five more activities in there, like everything from gardening
- 29:52Speaker 4: to fishing to like history, there's all kinds.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Of All the kids that I know that have that
- 29:57Speaker 2: book love it. Yep, yeah, absolute, I love it.
- 30:00Speaker 3: Yeah, such a great one to just throw in the
- 30:02Speaker 3: camper in the back of the truck if you're even
- 30:03Speaker 3: just going to a local parks. So many activities in there, Yeah,
- 30:07Speaker 3: you wouldn't just think about Yep.
- 30:09Speaker 2: All right. This kind of ties it together with activities
- 30:12Speaker 2: for kids, getting kids into hunting, and also Mabel's turkey
- 30:15Speaker 2: because she didn't get a turkey when we were out
- 30:18Speaker 2: on our big trip, but she did kill a Yanni's
- 30:23Speaker 2: ranch bird the other night. Oh that's been causing some
- 30:28Speaker 2: strife and actually Jennifer's not home, my wife. But when
- 30:31Speaker 2: we told her, she's like, I told you guys not
- 30:33Speaker 2: to kill that bird. And we're like, did you We
- 30:36Speaker 2: thought you just said like you didn't want us to
- 30:38Speaker 2: kill that bird. You didn't say you can't kill that bird.
- 30:42Speaker 2: We tried to kill him two other days, one time
- 30:44Speaker 2: in the evening, and he stayed over the roll and
- 30:47Speaker 2: then he just kept gobbling. And finally I'm like, did
- 30:49Speaker 2: he roost? And I went and peeked over the hill,
- 30:51Speaker 2: and sure enough he's in the tree. So the next morning,
- 30:54Speaker 2: my oldest and I we get up at five am
- 30:57Speaker 2: and I got her sitting on the deck like in
- 31:02Speaker 2: the dark, waiting for it to get light. Well I
- 31:04Speaker 2: didn't cause I dropped back to call a little bit,
- 31:06Speaker 2: so I didn't see. But the gobbler was in plain
- 31:09Speaker 2: view of a them, and so of course, like it
- 31:12Speaker 2: was doomed from the beginning because even uh, I don't know.
- 31:16Speaker 2: Jennifer's like, you guys are killing a half domesticated bird.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, kind of like this person doesn't live
- 31:24Speaker 2: in suburbia, like everybody around us lives on ten to
- 31:28Speaker 2: forty acres or something. There's coyotes around, there's foxes around.
- 31:33Speaker 4: Wolves.
- 31:34Speaker 2: Sure you know these are not quite I mean sure
- 31:36Speaker 2: other people feeding them. Yes. Well, anyways, the other evening
- 31:41Speaker 2: we could hear him goblin across the way. I told Mabel,
- 31:44Speaker 2: I said, just go out there, and every thirty minutes.
- 31:46Speaker 2: Just give a couple of strokes on the box call
- 31:48Speaker 2: he'd answer. And then after dinner, Mabel's like, that's probably
- 31:52Speaker 2: getting too late.
- 31:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 31:52Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, you're probably too late, but just keep
- 31:55Speaker 2: listening and looking. And we're cleaning up and a looks
- 31:57Speaker 2: out the window. He's right there, you know. Oh like
- 32:00Speaker 2: oh boy. So anyways, we go out there. It doesn't
- 32:03Speaker 2: take much, make a few calls, peek around the corner
- 32:06Speaker 2: of the garage, kill him. And uh. Maybe she's very
- 32:11Speaker 2: aware that it's like a different hunt than what we
- 32:14Speaker 2: were just experiencing on our Turkey camp trip. But it's
- 32:18Speaker 2: not what I want to talk about. What I want
- 32:19Speaker 2: to talk about is that she's very skittish around gutting
- 32:25Speaker 2: and the processing. My oldest one. I'll put her up
- 32:28Speaker 2: against anybody in this office. She might not be as
- 32:30Speaker 2: fast as you, but if you could give her a
- 32:32Speaker 2: whole deer and she could process it. At this point,
- 32:35Speaker 2: at the age of thirteen, she's good at it. She
- 32:38Speaker 2: enjoys it. Maybe on the other hand, like sticking her
- 32:42Speaker 2: hands up in that turkey's cavity and pulling those guts out,
- 32:45Speaker 2: fighting it, fighting it. So my question is of core.
- 32:49Speaker 2: You haven't gotten there. You're gonna have to deal with
- 32:51Speaker 2: this at some point. But like, for kids that like
- 32:54Speaker 2: to kill stuff, do you force them if they're not
- 32:58Speaker 2: into dealing with guts and processing, do you force them
- 33:02Speaker 2: to do it anyways, because that's part of the deal.
- 33:06Speaker 4: I mean, I can't. It hasn't been a problem with
- 33:10Speaker 4: my boys. If anything, they're like curious about it. They're
- 33:15Speaker 4: like interested in it. You know, with fish, they want
- 33:17Speaker 4: to see what's in the stomach, they want to see
- 33:20Speaker 4: what's in the crop. I mean, forcing a kid to
- 33:25Speaker 4: do something is maybe not ideal, but you should at
- 33:32Speaker 4: least I think you got to get him involved in
- 33:34Speaker 4: some of the steps, right. But yeah, I mean i'd
- 33:39Speaker 4: lean towards like you killed it, you're cleaning it.
- 33:43Speaker 2: Well, because it used to be just like you kill it,
- 33:45Speaker 2: you eat it, right. Yeah, that's like the original version
- 33:48Speaker 2: of this. And then I think sort of as because
- 33:51Speaker 2: I know Steve would just bring me home to his mom,
- 33:54Speaker 2: and his mom would kind of prepare it and then
- 33:56Speaker 2: they would eat it, right. I think that's kind of morphed.
- 34:01Speaker 2: As we've become parents to we're like we're like, oh no,
- 34:04Speaker 2: there's this other thing too, like you need to be
- 34:05Speaker 2: involved in the whole process, right, because we want them
- 34:08Speaker 2: to be. But what I'm scared of is if I
- 34:11Speaker 2: force it too much, then she she's gonna be like,
- 34:14Speaker 2: screw it, I don't even kill a turkey. I'll go
- 34:16Speaker 2: play volleyball.
- 34:17Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, maybe you try doing it in steps, man,
- 34:20Speaker 4: Like will she cut the breast off the carcass or.
- 34:26Speaker 2: She's yeah, man, she's not huge into any of that stuff.
- 34:32Speaker 2: Once it's in the bag and I ask her to
- 34:34Speaker 2: run the seiler, yeah she'll do that. I mean, I
- 34:37Speaker 2: guess if I was in that situation, I'd rather like
- 34:41Speaker 2: and worried about that you're gonna turn her off a
- 34:44Speaker 2: hunting all together.
- 34:45Speaker 4: I'd rather have her go hunting with me and not
- 34:49Speaker 4: do it and force her to do it and then
- 34:52Speaker 4: she doesn't want to go hunting, you know what I mean?
- 34:55Speaker 2: Totally.
- 34:55Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 3: My kid was with me on a turkey hunt last year,
- 34:58Speaker 3: and it was pretty funny because I'm like, all right,
- 34:59Speaker 3: now I got to gut this thing, and he's like,
- 35:01Speaker 3: oh gross, and started walking towards the truck and then
- 35:05Speaker 3: he like stopped and wanted to watch and got very
- 35:07Speaker 3: curious about halfway through and the next thing, you know,
- 35:09Speaker 3: he's like looking up into the turkey and wanting to
- 35:12Speaker 3: get his hands dirty and so that I never.
- 35:14Speaker 4: Went through that gross thing.
- 35:16Speaker 3: Man, It's just like a lot of curiosity.
- 35:18Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I got one in one kind of
- 35:21Speaker 2: hung out with the turkey's guts for thirty minutes, and
- 35:25Speaker 2: I was sort of heading towards the sauna and she
- 35:28Speaker 2: was running around the side of the house with like
- 35:30Speaker 2: different pieces. What's this? Then she'd come back, what's this?
- 35:33Speaker 2: Come back? She took like fifty pictures. Yeah, she doesn't
- 35:37Speaker 2: mind getting getting in there.
- 35:38Speaker 3: Yeah, you mentioned fish. That's a great starting point. I
- 35:40Speaker 3: feel like something about fish and the lack of eyebrows
- 35:43Speaker 3: that maybe or eyelashes.
- 35:46Speaker 4: May smell really bad.
- 35:50Speaker 3: Boy do they ever?
- 35:53Speaker 1: Uh?
- 35:53Speaker 2: Okay, we're gonna do a We're gonna request that you guys,
- 35:59Speaker 2: the listeners. We're gonna do a listener hot tip off showdown,
- 36:06Speaker 2: So we want you guys to send in a hot tip.
- 36:09Speaker 2: We're gonna play it next week. If I was here,
- 36:12Speaker 2: i'd host it on this show on my birthday. But
- 36:14Speaker 2: I'm gonna be in Manitoba hopefully looking over a bunch
- 36:18Speaker 2: of bears eating donuts and maple syrup. Ah, but Brody
- 36:25Speaker 2: wants hot tips for taking kids hunting, fishing, camping, that
- 36:30Speaker 2: sort of stuff because we're celebrating the paperback release of
- 36:34Speaker 2: Catch Crayfish count Stars. Yeah, what do you want to
- 36:37Speaker 2: add to that.
- 36:37Speaker 4: Brody, Well, we'll take all everyone's gonna send us all
- 36:42Speaker 4: those parents out there. It doesn't have to be from parents,
- 36:45Speaker 4: but I imagine the bulk of it will be from parents.
- 36:49Speaker 2: But I think if your kid has a hot tips too,
- 36:52Speaker 2: coming straight from the source and them to it.
- 36:54Speaker 4: Yeah, But anyway, we'll we'll look through everything we got.
- 37:00Speaker 4: We're gonna take the three what we think are three
- 37:03Speaker 4: of the best ones. Then in next week's show, the
- 37:07Speaker 4: hosts are gonna vote.
- 37:08Speaker 2: On the winner.
- 37:10Speaker 4: Now, the three finalists that are gonna compete will all
- 37:14Speaker 4: get a copy of the book, the paperback copy, and
- 37:19Speaker 4: then the winner will get this bad boy knife here.
- 37:23Speaker 4: You want to pull it out and show.
- 37:24Speaker 2: It, Yeah to the super sharp MKC.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Maybe like, if you give that knife to your kid,
- 37:32Speaker 4: be awful careful with it.
- 37:33Speaker 2: Yeah, guaranteed you're gonna need some band aids. So if
- 37:36Speaker 2: you're the lucky winner, you're gonna give that let your kid,
- 37:39Speaker 2: mess with it, get yourself some band aids ahead of time.
- 37:41Speaker 3: This is the Montana Knife Company flat Tail yep, little
- 37:45Speaker 3: collab we did with m great do it all hunt night.
- 37:49Speaker 4: So like sixty to ninety is a long hot tip video.
- 37:54Speaker 4: Keep it says SYNCD folks like sixty seconds is ideal
- 37:59Speaker 4: and then just send that. Send your videos to radio
- 38:01Speaker 4: at the meeteater dot com. That's that's the right address.
- 38:04Speaker 2: Scord, Yes, sir, and.
- 38:05Speaker 4: We'll vote on him next week.
- 38:08Speaker 3: Send it.
- 38:09Speaker 2: That'll be fun radio at themeeteater dot com. All right,
- 38:14Speaker 2: now on to our first guest, Bart George joining us today.
- 38:22Speaker 2: He's the wildlife program director for the Cowspell Tribe. Bart,
- 38:26Speaker 2: thanks for joining us. If meat Eater has a mountain
- 38:30Speaker 2: lion expert, Bart is it. We filmed Idaho Mountain Lion
- 38:36Speaker 2: in season seven of meat Eater with Bart. Bart's been
- 38:39Speaker 2: on several metater podcast episodes. There's a great one where
- 38:42Speaker 2: he tells the story of almost losing one of his
- 38:46Speaker 2: hounds and having himself having a very close encounter with
- 38:49Speaker 2: the mountain lion. You should go. I can't. I couldn't
- 38:51Speaker 2: find the episode number, sorry, but search around meter podcast
- 38:56Speaker 2: you can find it. Maybe Choreo'll find it now. And
- 38:58Speaker 2: he was also on a On the Hunt episode with
- 39:01Speaker 2: Yours Truly where I followed along as Bar performed the
- 39:06Speaker 2: research that we're going to talk about today. Bar.
- 39:10Speaker 1: How are you, I'm well, yeah, thanks for having me.
- 39:14Speaker 2: Yeah, you're welcome. All right. Explain like where the study
- 39:19Speaker 2: came from, how was built, how is how is it executed?
- 39:23Speaker 2: But save the results here for a minute.
- 39:26Speaker 7: Yeah, yeah, of course. So, like you mentioned, I worked
- 39:30Speaker 7: for the Callispell Tribe. I'm also a hound handler in
- 39:32Speaker 7: northeast Washington. I keep dogs and have for don't know
- 39:38Speaker 7: fifteen or so years here the state of Washington. You know,
- 39:42Speaker 7: hound hunting is illegal here, so there's not a lot
- 39:46Speaker 7: of people with dogs. So when they're you know, when
- 39:51Speaker 7: cougars get in trouble, typically it's with pets or small
- 39:54Speaker 7: livestock in our area. The state has a pool of
- 39:57Speaker 7: folks that they'll call to come out and deal with
- 40:00Speaker 7: that situation. Typically it's treat that cat and if it's
- 40:04Speaker 7: killed something, the state kills it. So Bruce, who's also
- 40:09Speaker 7: on that episode, both the episodes of My kind of
- 40:13Speaker 7: My Hunting Partner mentor whatever, he and I have been
- 40:17Speaker 7: doing this for quite a while, you know, fifteen years,
- 40:20Speaker 7: we're getting these calls from the state every you know,
- 40:23Speaker 7: once a month or something like that, until about twenty
- 40:25Speaker 7: eighteen and nineteen.
- 40:27Speaker 1: It really picked up. And I don't know what the
- 40:29Speaker 1: change was.
- 40:30Speaker 7: We didn't we have no way of really knowing that,
- 40:33Speaker 7: but we started seeing a real increase in depredations. And
- 40:38Speaker 7: you know, when there's a depredation, we go out, catch
- 40:40Speaker 7: that cat, kill it, and it becomes property of the
- 40:45Speaker 7: state and typically it's discarded. So you know, as a
- 40:51Speaker 7: as a hunter, as a tribal representative, whatever, its kind
- 40:55Speaker 7: of goes against what we all stand for. To see,
- 40:59Speaker 7: it's such a cool charismatic you know, species and carcass
- 41:04Speaker 7: just get pitched in the dumpster. So Bruce and I
- 41:08Speaker 7: kind of started brainstorm of kind come up with a
- 41:10Speaker 7: way to to have some sort of proactive response for
- 41:14Speaker 7: the state. So when you know, a real common narrative
- 41:18Speaker 7: when we were at these depredations, you know, we'd be
- 41:22Speaker 7: talking to the farmer or the operator and say, yeah,
- 41:24Speaker 7: you know, this cat was hanging around a week ago
- 41:27Speaker 7: on my neighbor's place and then I got a you know,
- 41:30Speaker 7: trail camera picture of it or I got to ring
- 41:32Speaker 7: doorbell picture of it or whatever a couple of days ago,
- 41:35Speaker 7: and it hadn't caused any trouble. But now here it
- 41:37Speaker 7: you know, killed lamas or pets or whatever. So we
- 41:42Speaker 7: kept here, you know, we heard that a lot, and
- 41:44Speaker 7: we got to thinking, like, what if we'd been out
- 41:47Speaker 7: here a week ago when it first showed up and
- 41:50Speaker 7: and chased that cat off, would it have still hung
- 41:54Speaker 7: around and killed something.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Or would it have you know, left the area or
- 41:59Speaker 1: we don't. We didn't know. So he's kind of started
- 42:01Speaker 1: brainstorm and working.
- 42:02Speaker 7: With the WFW enforcement crew that we're you know, we're
- 42:07Speaker 7: working with all the time, and we came up with
- 42:11Speaker 7: this idea to our hat in the cat, but we
- 42:13Speaker 7: didn't really know what that looks like yet, and we
- 42:15Speaker 7: didn't have the technology to do it. And I'll get
- 42:21Speaker 7: into that a little bit in the In the episode,
- 42:23Speaker 7: you kind of get us to see what we're doing
- 42:25Speaker 7: with the callers and different things. So I was buying
- 42:29Speaker 7: some callers from buddy up there at w Pounce of play.
- 42:35Speaker 7: He's really he's a tech guy, you know, he's like
- 42:37Speaker 7: an engineering background. He's into that kind of stuff more
- 42:41Speaker 7: than I am, for sure, And he came up with
- 42:44Speaker 7: this idea to develop the sleep mode on our garment callers.
- 42:49Speaker 7: So then I could put a collar on a cat.
- 42:53Speaker 7: That picture you got up as actually the largest cougar
- 42:56Speaker 7: ever collared that we know of. He's one hundred and
- 42:58Speaker 7: ninety seven pounds.
- 42:59Speaker 1: Man cat we caught right here nodding. He's a whopper man.
- 43:03Speaker 1: He's big. That was for the state of Washington. We
- 43:06Speaker 1: called that cat for.
- 43:08Speaker 7: Them on their Predator Prey project.
- 43:11Speaker 2: That's what that's what an almost two hundred pounder looks like.
- 43:15Speaker 3: Yeah, you could see the folds in his arm. How
- 43:16Speaker 3: much fat he's got just up around his neck.
- 43:19Speaker 2: Wow.
- 43:19Speaker 7: Yeah, if he'd have taken a couple more bites, he'd
- 43:22Speaker 7: have tipped the two hundred pound mark. Anyways, So working
- 43:27Speaker 7: with Buddy and he came up with this idea for
- 43:29Speaker 7: a sleep mode on a garment caller. So the survey caller,
- 43:32Speaker 7: you know, was the typical wildlife caller. It's big, kind
- 43:35Speaker 7: of clunky. Things got a long battery life though, four
- 43:38Speaker 7: years of battery life if it's programmed properly. But but
- 43:41Speaker 7: the garment callers, you know, you only get a couple
- 43:44Speaker 7: of days out of those.
- 43:45Speaker 1: With the dogs.
- 43:48Speaker 7: So we needed a way to get real time data
- 43:51Speaker 7: from a cat, but have it long last long enough
- 43:55Speaker 7: that we could you know, revisit this thing, you know,
- 43:58Speaker 7: for five or six weeks. So the sleep mode that
- 44:01Speaker 7: that Garment developed with Buddy self kind of made that possible.
- 44:05Speaker 7: So we were able then to couple like a regular
- 44:07Speaker 7: dog tracking collar onto our regular survey caller and uh.
- 44:15Speaker 1: And then revisit that.
- 44:17Speaker 7: Cat, you know, periodically and see how it's responding to
- 44:21Speaker 7: our hazing.
- 44:24Speaker 1: So that's that was kind of the next to the thing.
- 44:26Speaker 7: Then we needed to come up with a stimuli, and
- 44:29Speaker 7: we kicked that idea around and you know, in a
- 44:31Speaker 7: perfect world, we'd have had a whole bunch of time
- 44:34Speaker 7: and a bunch of folks helping and a big budget
- 44:36Speaker 7: and everything, and we would have tested a whole bunch
- 44:39Speaker 7: of different stimuli. But we settled on human voice just
- 44:41Speaker 7: because for you know, public safety hiking, for people yelling
- 44:46Speaker 7: at a cat to you know, move it along, or
- 44:48Speaker 7: whatever else. We just thought human voice made the most sense.
- 44:51Speaker 7: But I would have liked to test it, you know,
- 44:53Speaker 7: dogs barking or an engine or car horn honking or
- 44:57Speaker 7: whatever as the stimuli. So the stimuli that we settled
- 45:03Speaker 7: on was Meat Eater podcasts. It works nicely and you
- 45:08Speaker 7: guys have big, loud voices and everything else, and yet
- 45:11Speaker 7: there's not a lot of dead time in it. Other
- 45:13Speaker 7: podcasts with like long gaps and people like ruminating silently,
- 45:19Speaker 7: that doesn't we wanted. We wanted constant talking.
- 45:22Speaker 2: So you're saying, this is a crew of talkers we
- 45:24Speaker 2: have here.
- 45:25Speaker 7: Yeah, Man, when Steve gets going, he doesn't stop, he
- 45:27Speaker 7: doesn't come up rare. It's like, keeps it going, constant talk.
- 45:32Speaker 7: And that's what we wanted. We didn't want to have
- 45:33Speaker 7: gaps or music or anything else.
- 45:35Speaker 2: Yeah. So and you so you were, Yeah, you were
- 45:38Speaker 2: measuring basically what you were walking towards collared lines. You
- 45:42Speaker 2: knew the location, and then you were measuring, and you
- 45:45Speaker 2: had a loud speaker playing the Mediator podcast. It was
- 45:49Speaker 2: eighty decibels, right.
- 45:51Speaker 1: Yep, eighty decibels.
- 45:52Speaker 7: And that's a you know, that's a kind of an
- 45:53Speaker 7: outside voice, right, you know, you're at a cocktail party.
- 45:57Speaker 7: Eighty decibels probably wouldn't be obnoxious when you're out in
- 46:00Speaker 7: the woods, like and it's quiet, it's loud enough that
- 46:02Speaker 7: it's carrying a couple hundred yards. Yeah, so we expected
- 46:07Speaker 7: those cats be hearing us approach with this human voice stimuli,
- 46:11Speaker 7: and we're able, Like I said, we know exactly where
- 46:12Speaker 7: they're at. We're looking at our handheld, we know where
- 46:14Speaker 7: we're at, where the cat's at. We approach with this
- 46:18Speaker 7: human voice, and we're watching. As soon as that cat
- 46:21Speaker 7: gets up to his feet and kind of flees, we stop,
- 46:26Speaker 7: gather up our data and we see how it responds
- 46:29Speaker 7: to us, like how does it you know, how scared
- 46:32Speaker 7: of us is is it?
- 46:35Speaker 1: So we're able to major then how far that cat moved.
- 46:37Speaker 7: Away, and when it stops, we'd hop on, you know,
- 46:41Speaker 7: we'd radio back. They turned the dogs loose, and the
- 46:43Speaker 7: dogs would come to us, find the cat track and
- 46:46Speaker 7: they'd run that cat tree it the first time we'd
- 46:49Speaker 7: treat it. We'd mark it with paintballs, permanent paint, and
- 46:52Speaker 7: that was kind of the only hands on, you know,
- 46:56Speaker 7: that was the only real whatever hazing that we did,
- 46:59Speaker 7: other than the dogs parking. We wanted to test if
- 47:02Speaker 7: it could associate then, like this human voice approaching it
- 47:06Speaker 7: and then this negative interaction. So we did that with cats,
- 47:11Speaker 7: and we would do that four times with each cat,
- 47:15Speaker 7: and that was kind of our data set, so each
- 47:17Speaker 7: cat had its own unique sort of data set with
- 47:19Speaker 7: four points on it. We also did a control portion,
- 47:24Speaker 7: so then we would take cats and approach them. It's
- 47:30Speaker 7: exactly the same way with the speaker playing, and when
- 47:34Speaker 7: they mobilized, they'd leave, and then we turn around and
- 47:37Speaker 7: just walk OUTZ no hazing. We just wanted to see
- 47:41Speaker 7: how that cat would respond.
- 47:42Speaker 2: Yeah, and how many how many total cats did you
- 47:45Speaker 2: end up collaring and doing this too? Well?
- 47:49Speaker 1: We collared more. We ended up trying to.
- 47:51Speaker 7: You know, we had some trouble at first getting technology
- 47:54Speaker 7: figured out. I think totally total cats collared and handled
- 47:58Speaker 7: was around fifty. Uh. We got complete data on forty
- 48:03Speaker 7: one cats. Okay, that's a pretty good, pretty good sample size.
- 48:09Speaker 7: It's a little bit heavy on males, but not bad.
- 48:11Speaker 7: So we were able to get you know, they were
- 48:15Speaker 7: all adults. We didn't call our sub adult animals and
- 48:19Speaker 7: we tried not to. We tried not to capture females
- 48:22Speaker 7: that had accompanying young just because it muddies the data.
- 48:25Speaker 1: When we show up.
- 48:25Speaker 7: And there's three cats there, we don't know which one
- 48:29Speaker 7: runs first. Is it is you know, one of those
- 48:31Speaker 7: sub adults get spooked and runoff and the mom follows
- 48:34Speaker 7: her like.
- 48:34Speaker 1: We just didn't know.
- 48:35Speaker 2: Sure, sure, so independent.
- 48:37Speaker 1: Aged independent cats or what we were after?
- 48:45Speaker 4: All?
- 48:45Speaker 2: Right, So these cats all heard Steven Reel's voice a
- 48:49Speaker 2: whole bunch. How did they How did they react to that?
- 48:55Speaker 7: Uh?
- 48:56Speaker 1: Positively, I guess, or negatively, I don't tell you. Look
- 48:59Speaker 1: at it.
- 48:59Speaker 7: They were they learned to avoid us. It really indicated
- 49:04Speaker 7: that the pursuit with the dogs can alter their response
- 49:09Speaker 7: to this sort of what should have been a BE
- 49:10Speaker 7: nine stimulus with the human voice. So it's called a
- 49:15Speaker 7: it's called a flight initiation distance project.
- 49:18Speaker 1: And they do it with birds a lot because birds
- 49:19Speaker 1: are easy.
- 49:20Speaker 7: Right, If a bird sitting on a telephone pool our point,
- 49:22Speaker 7: you can walk out and measure how close it lets
- 49:24Speaker 7: you get.
- 49:24Speaker 1: And all that stuff. Sure, cougars are a lot harder
- 49:27Speaker 1: than that. They're secretive.
- 49:30Speaker 7: So this is kind of the first flight initiation distance
- 49:33Speaker 7: project with cats and our data, you know, for Project Cats.
- 49:38Speaker 1: I'm looking at it right now. The our mean.
- 49:41Speaker 7: Flight initiation distance increased from seventy five at our first
- 49:47Speaker 7: interaction seventy five meters to one hundred and twenty eight
- 49:51Speaker 7: meters by the fourth interaction, so almost double, which is
- 49:54Speaker 7: pretty good when you start thinking about this. Limitations so
- 49:57Speaker 7: that they can only hear you from so far away,
- 50:00Speaker 7: So sure, one hundred and twenty eight meters is pretty
- 50:03Speaker 7: good distance. And then the distance moved. It was really interesting.
- 50:09Speaker 7: It almost doubled, went from two hundred and seventy eight
- 50:12Speaker 7: meters to five hundred and eighty two meters.
- 50:14Speaker 1: Wow, they really wanted to get away from us.
- 50:17Speaker 7: By the end of this thing, they recognized that, you know,
- 50:20Speaker 7: this person approaching me is bad news. It means something bad.
- 50:24Speaker 7: It's about to happen.
- 50:26Speaker 2: Yeah, when you when you hear Stephen Ranella coming through
- 50:28Speaker 2: the woods, there's going to be a pack of hounds
- 50:31Speaker 2: not long after.
- 50:33Speaker 7: Right, if you're of wildlife and you hear Renella walking
- 50:35Speaker 7: towards you, bitter skidattle. The control portion was interesting, and
- 50:41Speaker 7: that was a little bit later in the game. We
- 50:43Speaker 7: really struggled with how to develop this control idea, so
- 50:46Speaker 7: it didn't start until about midway through the project. We
- 50:49Speaker 7: wanted to first see if we were getting good data
- 50:51Speaker 7: on our project cats, and the control cats showed an
- 50:57Speaker 7: interesting thing. Our flight and issue distance decreased. You know,
- 51:02Speaker 7: it started at sixty eight. We only had a value
- 51:06Speaker 7: about I think twelve for our control cats, but started
- 51:10Speaker 7: sixty eight, which is very close to what we saw
- 51:12Speaker 7: with our project cats at seventy five, and it actually
- 51:16Speaker 7: decreased down to thirty five meters. So by the end
- 51:19Speaker 7: of that project, those cats recognized pretty quickly that this
- 51:22Speaker 7: human voice doesn't isn't that scary, It doesn't mean very
- 51:25Speaker 7: much to them so interesting?
- 51:28Speaker 2: So was and was it didn't show clearly that basically
- 51:31Speaker 2: with every touch point it was getting closer by just
- 51:36Speaker 2: a little bit, or or was it kind of all
- 51:38Speaker 2: over the place? Would you jump sometimes from sixty eight
- 51:41Speaker 2: to fourteen or was it like always sixty eight, then fifty,
- 51:45Speaker 2: then forty and then twenty.
- 51:47Speaker 7: Yeah, there were certainly some cats that weren't that linear,
- 51:51Speaker 7: but there were some that really tracked like you're describing,
- 51:53Speaker 7: really closely to that that was a.
- 51:56Speaker 1: Little heavy on toms.
- 51:58Speaker 7: We ended up with a lot of thmbs eight in
- 52:00Speaker 7: the project, so we don't know if the females would
- 52:04Speaker 7: have responded accordingly, but yeah, by there's some of those cats.
- 52:09Speaker 1: You know, thirty five meters is just the meme, But
- 52:11Speaker 1: three or four of those cats by the last approach
- 52:16Speaker 1: we were walking up and looking at you know, we'd
- 52:18Speaker 1: stop at ten meters. That was kind of what we call,
- 52:21Speaker 1: you know, close enough.
- 52:23Speaker 7: We'd stop at ten meters and we'd be laying there
- 52:25Speaker 7: in the brush and looking at each other. So those
- 52:29Speaker 7: cats weren't afraid of us at all. That human voice
- 52:32Speaker 7: they had recognized is not something to be concerned with,
- 52:37Speaker 7: which is really interesting.
- 52:38Speaker 5: You know.
- 52:38Speaker 7: That's like when you think about these cats in parks
- 52:41Speaker 7: and along hiking trails and stuff like that, you know,
- 52:44Speaker 7: there's maybe one hundred people a day walking by, talking
- 52:48Speaker 7: to each other and stuff, and they've just learned like
- 52:50Speaker 7: just be still and let them pass.
- 52:52Speaker 2: Sure, yeah, it's a wonder we don't have more attacks.
- 52:57Speaker 2: And you know, who knows who can explain that. But
- 53:01Speaker 2: all right, so you can see there's like two I
- 53:05Speaker 2: don't know, there's a lot of ways to look at this,
- 53:06Speaker 2: but it's like one, it's it's good information for the cats,
- 53:11Speaker 2: right and for saving cats because as opposed to you
- 53:15Speaker 2: guys just coming out killing these cats and then they
- 53:18Speaker 2: go into the dumpster. Like, if you can show that
- 53:21Speaker 2: these cats by a little bit of hazing then learn
- 53:25Speaker 2: to stay away from humans, that saves cat lives, right, So.
- 53:29Speaker 7: Yeah, that's the idea, right, we want those things out
- 53:32Speaker 7: on the landscape for leap, for hunters or for whatever else.
- 53:36Speaker 2: Yeah, just I don't know, be a part of the
- 53:40Speaker 2: landscape that is wildlife out there. So like, how has
- 53:45Speaker 2: the research been received or are people reading it looking
- 53:50Speaker 2: at it? And then is it changing any minds or
- 53:53Speaker 2: is it affecting management at all? Management thoughts decisions in Washington.
- 54:00Speaker 7: Uh, you know, I don't know if it's made any
- 54:03Speaker 7: major you know, led to any changes just yet. I
- 54:06Speaker 7: think it's being well received for the most part. There's
- 54:10Speaker 7: of course, people trying to.
- 54:11Speaker 1: Make it into something that it's not on you know,
- 54:15Speaker 1: it's not a silver bullet.
- 54:17Speaker 7: It's not it's not going to correct all cougar public
- 54:22Speaker 7: safety issues or defordations or whatever.
- 54:24Speaker 1: But I think it's another.
- 54:25Speaker 7: Tool for managers to consider when you know, you have
- 54:29Speaker 7: a landscape with lots of people on it and lots
- 54:32Speaker 7: of cougars around and you want to kind of lead
- 54:35Speaker 7: to that sort of safe coexistence. It just gives managers
- 54:39Speaker 7: another tool, and I think it's being received by the
- 54:42Speaker 7: managers fairly well.
- 54:43Speaker 1: In that way.
- 54:46Speaker 7: You know, there's a there's a lot of movement right
- 54:49Speaker 7: now with cougar management across the West, there's a you know,
- 54:53Speaker 7: people aren't going anywhere. Cougar populations seem to be stable
- 54:57Speaker 7: or increasing in a lot of places. Say I'm hopeful,
- 55:01Speaker 7: I'm hopeful it gets picked up, and people kind of
- 55:03Speaker 7: consider that before you know, killing a cat potentially needlessly,
- 55:10Speaker 7: and also when they're thinking about you know, policy and
- 55:14Speaker 7: opportunities for hound handlers to get out and sort of
- 55:17Speaker 7: recreationally pursue these catches, and maybe an opportunity to get
- 55:21Speaker 7: ahead of some of these things altogether just through recreational
- 55:24Speaker 7: hound pursuits.
- 55:25Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, it's such a weird idea. Like before
- 55:28Speaker 2: I got into hound hunting, I would have never thought
- 55:32Speaker 2: that there would be people out there that'd be like,
- 55:34Speaker 2: oh yeah, I just want to go and chase these cats.
- 55:36Speaker 2: I don't even need to kill them, Like just like
- 55:38Speaker 2: going out and you know, participating in trying to catch one,
- 55:43Speaker 2: catching them, taking pictures, and then leaving them. That will
- 55:46Speaker 2: be plenty to keep me excited. Now that I've done it,
- 55:51Speaker 2: Like I totally get it. Like you don't have to
- 55:54Speaker 2: have a kill season to have hound people be super
- 55:59Speaker 2: into it.
- 56:01Speaker 7: Oh yeah, yeah, it's just it's a cool thing and
- 56:03Speaker 7: a lot of you know, hound handlers have been really
- 56:06Speaker 7: strong advocates for wildlife protections across the West. Just recently
- 56:10Speaker 7: in Wyoming is the hound groups that they kind of
- 56:14Speaker 7: squashed a bill that would have, you know, an idea
- 56:18Speaker 7: that would have really probably damaged while cougar populations in
- 56:22Speaker 7: that state, and that you know, hound handlers have came
- 56:27Speaker 7: came to the plate several times to sort of protect
- 56:29Speaker 7: cats because they want something to do on the weekends,
- 56:33Speaker 7: they want to be pursuing cougars, taking their picture, working
- 56:38Speaker 7: their dogs. I mean that's kind of the important thing.
- 56:40Speaker 7: Now that you have mingus, you sort of recognize how
- 56:43Speaker 7: much you know that having a dog in the hunt
- 56:46Speaker 7: saying really means.
- 56:48Speaker 2: Oh yeah, that's another thing too. If you're out there
- 56:50Speaker 2: and your dog's not there because he's out on injured
- 56:53Speaker 2: reserve or whatever, you might as well just stay home
- 56:55Speaker 2: because it ain't no fun once.
- 56:58Speaker 7: You've got your own dogs in the races.
- 57:00Speaker 2: On Well, Bart, thanks for doing the work and thanks
- 57:04Speaker 2: for coming and telling us about it. If anybody wants
- 57:08Speaker 2: to learn more about this project or actually look at
- 57:11Speaker 2: your the results of the research, where can they go
- 57:14Speaker 2: to find that.
- 57:16Speaker 7: I emailed you guys over a copy of the final publication.
- 57:20Speaker 7: You can share that if you'd like.
- 57:23Speaker 1: You know, that episode that.
- 57:24Speaker 7: The episode that we did really describes the process of
- 57:28Speaker 7: the hazing pretty well.
- 57:30Speaker 1: They can check that out also.
- 57:33Speaker 2: Okay, cool, thank you. Have a good day, Bart. We'll
- 57:38Speaker 2: be in touch soon.
- 57:39Speaker 1: All right, thank you, thank you.
- 57:42Speaker 2: All right, I'm watching the clock. Finally after an hour,
- 57:45Speaker 2: I see that we've burned up sixty minutes and you've
- 57:48Speaker 2: got to the first listener feedback. Yeah, we haven't even
- 57:51Speaker 2: gotten a listener feedback, So we're gonna do that. I'm
- 57:53Speaker 2: gonna also while Phil is doing that, I'm gonna also
- 57:57Speaker 2: ask you guys to sort of just, you know, in
- 57:59Speaker 2: the chat kind of vote you guys would rather hear
- 58:02Speaker 2: gear talk or show and tell.
- 58:05Speaker 6: Because here's the thing I was gonna I was gonna
- 58:08Speaker 6: call an audible. I'm gonna suggest something because this is
- 58:11Speaker 6: if the audience hasn't noticed, this is a little this
- 58:13Speaker 6: shows a little different this week. We had to make
- 58:15Speaker 6: a last minute change, so we're kind of just mixing
- 58:17Speaker 6: things up in the field of the show is a
- 58:19Speaker 6: little it's it's it's a little unfamiliar. So I'm thinking
- 58:22Speaker 6: we just do one listener feedback, very very familiar to me. Sure,
- 58:27Speaker 6: I think we just do one listener feedback at the
- 58:29Speaker 6: very end. It'll be the last thing we do. I
- 58:30Speaker 6: think we can cruise through gear Talk and Show and Tell,
- 58:33Speaker 6: just back to back.
- 58:34Speaker 1: I like it.
- 58:34Speaker 3: I think Phil wants to share his sound drops and
- 58:37Speaker 3: I really want Okay, that's true.
- 58:39Speaker 2: I forgot that he had roll a special news.
- 58:41Speaker 6: I just I just hate cutting things it because we
- 58:43Speaker 6: had to cut something last week and it made me
- 58:45Speaker 6: feel bad.
- 58:46Speaker 2: All right, Well, Josh Miller, if you're watching or listening,
- 58:51Speaker 2: you know, get your program together so you can join
- 58:53Speaker 2: us on a future episode, because it's going to be
- 58:57Speaker 2: entertaining for everybody when we uh, when we get to
- 59:01Speaker 2: see how you run this program. Because I got a
- 59:03Speaker 2: lot of questions for Josh in this program, all right,
- 59:07Speaker 2: So I like that. So we're gonna save listener feedback
- 59:10Speaker 2: for the end. That's what you want to do, Phil, Yeah,
- 59:12Speaker 2: I'll get some more questions in. Okay, bring some more questions.
- 59:16Speaker 2: Now we're on to gear Talk.
- 59:20Speaker 6: Let's talk about gear fa beat, Let's talk about sop
- 59:24Speaker 6: and beats. Let's talk about boots in bind candle patterns.
- 59:28Speaker 1: With young beats. Let's talk about let's talk about gear.
- 59:33Speaker 1: Let's talk.
- 59:35Speaker 6: Yeah, there we go. I told you, I told the
- 59:38Speaker 6: crew I was gonna do a different song. I was
- 59:39Speaker 6: gonna I was gonna do jive talking the begi's, But
- 59:42Speaker 6: there were just there were too many harmonies and I
- 59:44Speaker 6: was feeling lazy this morning. So we're not. I stuck
- 59:46Speaker 6: with that one.
- 59:47Speaker 3: If that was lazy, that's the nails at Phil.
- 59:50Speaker 2: We should just come up with a new segment every
- 59:52Speaker 2: week so that Phil has to.
- 59:53Speaker 4: Do a news to come in here at six in
- 59:56Speaker 4: the morning before everyone's here and like hide in here
- 59:59Speaker 4: and do yeah.
- 59:59Speaker 2: But you can hear it in his voice when he's
- 1:00:02Speaker 2: doing it. That's what he loves about his job. That's
- 1:00:05Speaker 2: what he loves about it. All right. Gear Talk wants
- 1:00:09Speaker 2: to go first.
- 1:00:11Speaker 4: Well, you're just going.
- 1:00:13Speaker 2: To order that it's written, all right, all right. I
- 1:00:17Speaker 2: recently I've had this cooler for a while, but I
- 1:00:23Speaker 2: got to use it again at Turkey Camp. We had
- 1:00:25Speaker 2: the right kind of weather. Last year Turkey Camp was
- 1:00:26Speaker 2: so cold. I didn't even bring these suckers out. Now. Listen,
- 1:00:29Speaker 2: this is mega expensive gear. I didn't pay for mine
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: but it's cool. Okay, yeah, no, puny. You can make
- 1:00:40Speaker 2: it cold. You can make ice if you want. Yes,
- 1:00:43Speaker 2: it is a solar powered cooler made by Dometic. Okay, roughly,
- 1:00:51Speaker 2: you're gonna be in to it. The core is gonna
- 1:00:54Speaker 2: go depending on the size, plus or minus a couple
- 1:00:57Speaker 2: of hundred bucks one thousand. Then you also need a
- 1:01:02Speaker 2: solar panel, and you also need a battery that stores there.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: You go, there's a picture of my setup. So the
- 1:01:11Speaker 2: juice goes, is captured by the solar panel, it goes
- 1:01:14Speaker 2: into the battery, is stored there, and then into the cooler.
- 1:01:17Speaker 2: You can't go direct solar panel to the cooler.
- 1:01:20Speaker 4: How many quartz is that cooler?
- 1:01:23Speaker 2: That one is? They call it the fifty five. The
- 1:01:26Speaker 2: nice thing about these coolers is that and I would
- 1:01:30Speaker 2: call them it's more of a refrigerator that is in
- 1:01:33Speaker 2: the shape of a cooler than it being an actual cooler.
- 1:01:36Speaker 2: It's definitely not as insulated as a yety. Like if
- 1:01:40Speaker 2: you just used it as a cooler and didn't have
- 1:01:42Speaker 2: power to it, it's not gonna work as well as
- 1:01:44Speaker 2: a YETI would, but if you've got it set up
- 1:01:49Speaker 2: like this and that battery, I haven't tried it just alone,
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: but you could probably not have sun or ditch a
- 1:01:55Speaker 2: solar panel. You could. I'm guessing you could run that
- 1:01:58Speaker 2: cooler at thirty eight degrees for three to four days
- 1:02:03Speaker 2: off that battery, which you know gets you through a
- 1:02:06Speaker 2: lot of camping.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: Trips Memorial Weekend.
- 1:02:09Speaker 2: But man, the real benefit And I don't know, is
- 1:02:13Speaker 2: it worth sixteen hundred bucks for the whole kit in kaboodle,
- 1:02:17Speaker 2: I don't know. You're gonna have to buy a lot.
- 1:02:19Speaker 2: You're gonna have to not buy a lot of bags
- 1:02:20Speaker 2: of ice for it to pay for itself.
- 1:02:22Speaker 3: Oh yeah, buck fifty a bag.
- 1:02:24Speaker 2: Yeah, But like not having the wetness in the bottom
- 1:02:30Speaker 2: of the cooler, not having to deal with the ice,
- 1:02:33Speaker 2: just constantly knowing that like, oh no, this thing at
- 1:02:37Speaker 2: all times is thirty three degrees or whatever you set
- 1:02:40Speaker 2: it up to. It's pretty sweet. Like it just takes
- 1:02:44Speaker 2: out that element of dealing with the ice, wondering if
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: your stuff's getting too warm, and especially like we we
- 1:02:51Speaker 2: had some birds that needed cooling down right. I used
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: to always bring a separate cooler with separate ice, keep
- 1:02:57Speaker 2: it locked down so that when I get to meet
- 1:03:00Speaker 2: I can jam it in there, it'll get cold and
- 1:03:02Speaker 2: I can get it home. Well, this time, we basically
- 1:03:05Speaker 2: just processed the birds, put them into ziplocks and gave
- 1:03:08Speaker 2: them their own little, you know, quadrant of that refrigerator,
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: and they're just in there doing their thing. No, don't
- 1:03:17Speaker 2: have to worry about any kind of meat.
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: Spoilers all the comforts of home.
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: Yeah. No, Listen, when your buddy showed up in camp,
- 1:03:24Speaker 2: which we had to do, they were giving me some shit.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: They're like, dude, like, did you have to like have
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: a note another trailer with you to carry all this with?
- 1:03:33Speaker 3: You say, it looks like it takes up the whole
- 1:03:35Speaker 3: back end of your taco.
- 1:03:36Speaker 2: It doesn't, actually, I mean, if you think about it,
- 1:03:39Speaker 2: I brought two and I was actually just swapping. I
- 1:03:42Speaker 2: would just unplug one and plug the other one in
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: and then they would they would work that way. But
- 1:03:47Speaker 2: that solar panel, it's skinny, so you just kind of
- 1:03:50Speaker 2: slide it in anywhere you want. The battery is I
- 1:03:53Speaker 2: don't know the size of maybe three NuGen bottles, so
- 1:03:58Speaker 2: it definitely doesn't take up any more room. But the
- 1:04:01Speaker 2: big benefit is that yeah, no ice, no ice, mess,
- 1:04:06Speaker 2: it's got a setting in there. I haven't done it yet.
- 1:04:09Speaker 2: I haven't been drinking as I'm getting ready for the
- 1:04:12Speaker 2: big race, so I didn't have to bring any ice
- 1:04:14Speaker 2: for cocktails. But it's got a deal where you can
- 1:04:17Speaker 2: go to the lowest setting and then you basically have
- 1:04:21Speaker 2: like a little mini compartment that sits right on the
- 1:04:24Speaker 2: compressor and you can actually make ice in the field.
- 1:04:27Speaker 3: That's a game changer.
- 1:04:29Speaker 2: If you like to have your whiskey on the rocks. Yeah, Brodi,
- 1:04:34Speaker 2: what do you got?
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: I got these bad little mama jamas here.
- 1:04:39Speaker 1: This is the sig.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: So these are the image stabilizing buying us that sig
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: hour makes. And I'm generally pretty slow to adopt like
- 1:04:54Speaker 4: new technology, but if you've never looked through these things, like,
- 1:04:59Speaker 4: it's impossible to explain to someone who hasn't looked through
- 1:05:02Speaker 4: one of these and just used the regular binos the
- 1:05:05Speaker 4: difference that it makes, like freehanding binos especially, I'm like
- 1:05:11Speaker 4: Western spot in stock hunts. It just sucks like you
- 1:05:14Speaker 4: have to have a tripod. You still do, but with these,
- 1:05:18Speaker 4: like you can kick back and throw them up on
- 1:05:21Speaker 4: your knees and actually do a little work with them
- 1:05:24Speaker 4: without a tripod, and it gives your neck and your
- 1:05:26Speaker 4: shoulders a break. You're not hunched over that that tripod
- 1:05:30Speaker 4: all day long, and you can certainly set them up
- 1:05:33Speaker 4: for a tripod. The reason I like these is not
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: for tripod glass and or big spot in stock hunts.
- 1:05:40Speaker 4: I like them because they're small. They're ten by thirties,
- 1:05:44Speaker 4: so they're light. They're light so like turkey season.
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: Great.
- 1:05:51Speaker 4: If I was a tree stand whitetail hunter, they'd be
- 1:05:54Speaker 4: ideal for that. And we've been talking about kids a
- 1:05:59Speaker 4: lot today, like they're awesome for kids because especially younger
- 1:06:03Speaker 4: kids just have trouble holding binos steady enough to look
- 1:06:07Speaker 4: at and you're like, the deer's over there, and they're
- 1:06:09Speaker 4: just like all over the place with those things, they
- 1:06:12Speaker 4: can actually see stuff. Yeah, so my boys will definitely
- 1:06:16Speaker 4: be carrying carrying those this fall deer hunting and stuff.
- 1:06:19Speaker 2: Yeah. They're small enough that I was carrying them in
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: the pocket. Yeah of my first light turkey vest.
- 1:06:25Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: Yeah, definitely, Like a ten by thirty is not not
- 1:06:28Speaker 4: a wide field of view, right, Like it's for long
- 1:06:31Speaker 4: range class and it's not going to be ideal. But
- 1:06:33Speaker 4: they make what are they twelve by fifties?
- 1:06:38Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't well, yeah, those are in the newer version.
- 1:06:41Speaker 2: Yeah that they make They have a bigger objective with
- 1:06:45Speaker 2: the bigger field of view. But I actually prefer these
- 1:06:49Speaker 2: older versions or the first not older, but the first iteration, Yeah,
- 1:06:54Speaker 2: just because it is a smaller package and it just
- 1:06:57Speaker 2: they're yeah, super tidy. Love it and I would probably
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: I'll carry I may even carry these.
- 1:07:05Speaker 4: And my regular glass and binos this fall like Deer
- 1:07:08Speaker 4: and Elk.
- 1:07:08Speaker 2: Count Yeah, like you said, for handholding when you're just
- 1:07:11Speaker 2: gonna like quickly need to scan the hillside or you
- 1:07:14Speaker 2: see something moving and you need to get on it quick.
- 1:07:16Speaker 2: Those things are amazing.
- 1:07:17Speaker 3: Yeah, I guess we're on the battery train or everything
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: that needs charging or takes batteries. But yeah, I am
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: in love with this new well it's not new, but
- 1:07:28Speaker 3: new to me. The uncharted supply companies the Zeus Air,
- 1:07:32Speaker 3: which is air inflator.
- 1:07:35Speaker 2: Uh A couple of time, one of those Corey beats me.
- 1:07:39Speaker 2: I thought your whole job was to keep me decked
- 1:07:42Speaker 2: out with all the bitch and stuff.
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: No, I'm also a podcast producer. But this thing will
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: pump up any tires, bike tires to truck tires. That
- 1:07:51Speaker 3: also will jumpstart vehicle up to a six liter diesel engine,
- 1:07:55Speaker 3: which I haven't had to use that yet. That's a
- 1:07:57Speaker 3: big battery is probably seven years old, so one of
- 1:07:59Speaker 3: these day it is not going to start for me.
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: I do have a little like pin leak in my
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: truck tire passenger side tire, so I've had to use
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: this every couple of days. Definitely gonna take it with
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: me camp and it's just a good thing to have
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: in the truck all the time. Also charge USB both
- 1:08:16Speaker 3: types of USB cords has a little handy danny flashlight
- 1:08:19Speaker 3: on it.
- 1:08:19Speaker 2: It'll blind you if you're not How much does that
- 1:08:21Speaker 2: thing cost?
- 1:08:22Speaker 3: Two hundred and fifty bucks?
- 1:08:24Speaker 4: That's reasonable.
- 1:08:25Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean there's.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: Some other ones out there, like Dwalt makes one, but
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: it's like three times the size. It's pretty amazing how
- 1:08:31Speaker 3: much power is packed into this little kit right here.
- 1:08:36Speaker 4: What kind of jacks does it got?
- 1:08:37Speaker 3: Like USB and like USB and USB C Yeah, so.
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: It comes with it's a little cables though to if
- 1:08:44Speaker 2: you had to have you had to hit your battery.
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: Yep, comes with the jumper cables and then they hose
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: to inflate your tire and it works. It's kind of slow,
- 1:08:52Speaker 3: but it works well. Like I've used it a few
- 1:08:54Speaker 3: times and I don't know, you can probably get all
- 1:08:57Speaker 3: four tires filled up on one like from to fill.
- 1:09:01Speaker 2: Like in my before the battery ran out.
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: It's pretty impressive. I've been carrying this thing everywhere, so
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: always good to have in the truck.
- 1:09:08Speaker 2: Okay, Corey wins geared talk.
- 1:09:10Speaker 3: Oh, I didn't realize it was a competition, all.
- 1:09:12Speaker 2: Right, Onto our next segment, show and tell.
- 1:09:16Speaker 4: Many the show.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: Good choice, Phil.
- 1:09:21Speaker 4: Many a shot.
- 1:09:24Speaker 6: This is my shriekiest one, A little out of my ring.
- 1:09:30Speaker 2: Spencer brought a rock? What else did you we.
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: Spent no rocks today?
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: Baby?
- 1:09:37Speaker 2: Of course, of course he brought a rock.
- 1:09:41Speaker 6: I love this. I love this bit of Yanni just
- 1:09:44Speaker 6: complaining about Spencer all the time. It's my favorite.
- 1:09:46Speaker 2: Well, I didn't know it. Spencer's the whole reason we
- 1:09:48Speaker 2: just don't get to come on here and tell hunting stories,
- 1:09:50Speaker 2: especially when all the viewers are like, tell us more
- 1:09:53Speaker 2: haunt stories.
- 1:09:54Speaker 4: This is like this show is kind of spends.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: This show is kind of his baby.
- 1:09:59Speaker 2: Is it?
- 1:10:00Speaker 3: You're the producer does a great job, but it's it
- 1:10:04Speaker 3: all started and you know, kind of morphs off the
- 1:10:06Speaker 3: Spencer's ideas. So hats off to Space.
- 1:10:08Speaker 6: Come on the show More Off and Yanni, you can
- 1:10:10Speaker 6: crash it and tell more hunting stories.
- 1:10:13Speaker 2: Hey love to have. Corey knows exactly when I'm available
- 1:10:15Speaker 2: at the hostep. All right for show and tell today,
- 1:10:19Speaker 2: I brought in my Axis buck euromount. And this is
- 1:10:26Speaker 2: from a buck that I killed with the Element boys
- 1:10:30Speaker 2: in let's see February of twenty four, so a little
- 1:10:34Speaker 2: over the over a year ago. I like the way
- 1:10:40Speaker 2: it turned out. This is my first animal that I've
- 1:10:43Speaker 2: ever sort of kept the velvet on. The outfitter and
- 1:10:47Speaker 2: the Element boys were really impressed. They say this this
- 1:10:50Speaker 2: might have been the biggest one they were going to
- 1:10:52Speaker 2: kill the whole season. They think that it's like top
- 1:10:56Speaker 2: ten or twenty archery sci axis. Oh yes, which.
- 1:11:03Speaker 4: Well, I've just never been close enough to a set
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: of those antlers to get a feel for Like looking
- 1:11:09Speaker 4: at it on video, you can't tell how big or
- 1:11:11Speaker 4: small they are. And this isn't a this isn't an
- 1:11:15Speaker 4: insult to you in any way, but those antlers are
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: smaller than I thought they would be.
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, access deer is not a giant animal, right,
- 1:11:22Speaker 2: like it's an animal that you can buy yourself. Drag
- 1:11:25Speaker 2: along you know.
- 1:11:27Speaker 3: Sorry, I'll say in the video with the Element boys,
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: when you killed this thing, he looks huge on the hoof,
- 1:11:33Speaker 3: no offense to the beautiful trophy.
- 1:11:35Speaker 2: He's next to some doze. He's next to smaller box.
- 1:11:40Speaker 3: That really shows a size in that video.
- 1:11:41Speaker 2: I feel like, totally, what's I think the thing that
- 1:11:45Speaker 2: I'd like to share about it?
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: Though?
- 1:11:46Speaker 2: I mean, it's a great hunt, had a great, great
- 1:11:48Speaker 2: time with everybody there and Outlaw outfitters. If you're looking
- 1:11:53Speaker 2: for a good access deer hunt team, Outlaw I believe.
- 1:11:58Speaker 2: But yeah, so you guys know, oh what makes long
- 1:12:03Speaker 2: I guess trophies or whatever is long brow times? And
- 1:12:06Speaker 2: then I can't remember what they called these, something with
- 1:12:09Speaker 2: a pee it's uh. Anyways, when these are as tall
- 1:12:14Speaker 2: as the main beam, then he gets to be a
- 1:12:17Speaker 2: big boy. But this is a reminder to me that
- 1:12:22Speaker 2: for me to get excited about hunting and killing certain species,
- 1:12:28Speaker 2: I need to have some amount of exposure to them
- 1:12:33Speaker 2: more than I have with an axis to here. Now
- 1:12:36Speaker 2: that I've done it three days, I'm kind of excited
- 1:12:38Speaker 2: to go back. I'd like to go back during when
- 1:12:41Speaker 2: they're really roaring in the rut, which is middle of
- 1:12:43Speaker 2: summer in Texas. So it's kind of an adventure because
- 1:12:46Speaker 2: you're gonna be out there with the snakes, you know,
- 1:12:48Speaker 2: in the heat and the heat. But like now I
- 1:12:52Speaker 2: know a little bit about them, and I'm kind of
- 1:12:54Speaker 2: like it. I'm titillated by it and I want to
- 1:12:58Speaker 2: experience more of it. But like how excited these guys
- 1:13:01Speaker 2: were to see this animal? For me, I was like,
- 1:13:03Speaker 2: I don't know, it's like the fourth buck I've ever seen.
- 1:13:06Speaker 2: It's just another It's just another axis to me. I
- 1:13:11Speaker 2: don't know. Do you guys ever feel that? Unlike when
- 1:13:13Speaker 2: you're like when you come to new territory, new animal,
- 1:13:17Speaker 2: but like you don't know the landscape, you don't know
- 1:13:19Speaker 2: the animal. It's kind of hard to you don't have
- 1:13:22Speaker 2: a connection.
- 1:13:24Speaker 4: Right, especially with it'd be especially true with the species
- 1:13:29Speaker 4: like that, which isn't even native to North America.
- 1:13:33Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. You got to go to India, yea.
- 1:13:37Speaker 3: Yeah, I just recently did an odd ad hunt and
- 1:13:39Speaker 3: never seen one before, so I was basing everything off
- 1:13:41Speaker 3: a bigger sheep that I've seen thousands of and very
- 1:13:44Speaker 3: different animal, similar but different totally. That was difficult too.
- 1:13:48Speaker 2: Did you feel connection with that Ali dad or once?
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: No, once I put my hands on them, there was
- 1:13:54Speaker 3: a full on connection. But before that not.
- 1:14:03Speaker 2: All right? Brody? Would you bring Corey?
- 1:14:05Speaker 4: You want to help me?
- 1:14:09Speaker 3: It's a truck.
- 1:14:13Speaker 4: Do you go?
- 1:14:14Speaker 6: I feel like I need a drum roll? Here?
- 1:14:16Speaker 2: You do? These boys? For those of you just listening
- 1:14:20Speaker 2: and not looking, it's taking two of them to lift
- 1:14:23Speaker 2: up and and.
- 1:14:25Speaker 6: Move move a little bit further in there.
- 1:14:28Speaker 2: They're moving Rody's giant moose skull and antlers that you killed.
- 1:14:35Speaker 2: And was that last fall? Last fall?
- 1:14:40Speaker 1: Man?
- 1:14:41Speaker 2: What a beauty that's bigger than my dad's.
- 1:14:46Speaker 4: I guess I should sit down and talk about it.
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: Phil.
- 1:14:49Speaker 6: Yeah, this might be a problem. Sorry, we don't have more.
- 1:14:52Speaker 6: You can't like the situations?
- 1:14:55Speaker 4: Ye?
- 1:14:57Speaker 2: You you need me to help you to get positions.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: We're live, all right?
- 1:15:02Speaker 4: We can just rest it there maybe.
- 1:15:05Speaker 2: So.
- 1:15:05Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:15:05Speaker 4: This is my first and only bull moose Alaska Yukon
- 1:15:09Speaker 4: moose brought in for a couple of reasons, just because
- 1:15:15Speaker 4: moose antlers are super cool. But one of the reasons
- 1:15:20Speaker 4: is the bulls. And Yannis knows this from his dad
- 1:15:23Speaker 4: killing one and not in the same spot, but same
- 1:15:27Speaker 4: general zone of Alaska. The bulls in that area tend
- 1:15:32Speaker 4: to have these really big fronts. He's like Paul, almost
- 1:15:36Speaker 4: like a second palm, you know, and a lot a
- 1:15:40Speaker 4: lot of bulls will just have like a couple of
- 1:15:42Speaker 4: times coming out. So it just just makes these particular
- 1:15:46Speaker 4: bulls really really neat. The other reason I brought it
- 1:15:51Speaker 4: in is this is the first, uh, big game animal
- 1:15:55Speaker 4: whose skull I paid to have done. Normally, I clean
- 1:16:01Speaker 4: all my skulls by simmer numb and water and then
- 1:16:04Speaker 4: cleaning them up. I paid to have this one beetled.
- 1:16:08Speaker 4: And the main reason is is if you look how
- 1:16:11Speaker 4: this these antlers come off of the skull, you can't
- 1:16:16Speaker 4: get it down there in the pot. That's right, Like
- 1:16:19Speaker 4: there's a way to do it where you can make
- 1:16:21Speaker 4: notches in a big pot and all that, but I
- 1:16:23Speaker 4: didn't want to mess with it, so I paid to
- 1:16:25Speaker 4: have it beetled. And I think beadled skulls look better
- 1:16:28Speaker 4: then than can look better than.
- 1:16:31Speaker 2: Well, and they're definitely stronger. Yeah, they'll hold up longer.
- 1:16:36Speaker 2: Where's that? Where are you hanging that thing? Haven't decided yet,
- 1:16:39Speaker 2: so it's not even on a wall. Yea, yeah, I
- 1:16:41Speaker 2: just put the the uh, the wire, the wire into
- 1:16:47Speaker 2: it the other day.
- 1:16:47Speaker 4: So yeah, I gotta gotta pick a spot.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: How much you do you have you waited?
- 1:16:52Speaker 4: I'm guessing sixty.
- 1:16:55Speaker 2: You think, Yeah, I know when I went to that
- 1:16:59Speaker 2: D and C or DNE is that who shipped yours to.
- 1:17:03Speaker 4: Trophy Trophy Alaska Trophy Express.
- 1:17:08Speaker 2: I went into one of those in I think it
- 1:17:10Speaker 2: was Fairbanks, and we were going to ship my dad's
- 1:17:13Speaker 2: which was a pretty average fifty three fifty four inch
- 1:17:16Speaker 2: bowl or something, nice fronts, and there's a couple of
- 1:17:19Speaker 2: the big boys in there. Due they were so big
- 1:17:22Speaker 2: that I picked them up and could only hold them
- 1:17:25Speaker 2: long enough for a snap of picture before I had
- 1:17:27Speaker 2: to set them down.
- 1:17:28Speaker 4: Yeah, there was two bulls when we got back into
- 1:17:31Speaker 4: the town. The hangar from the air service we were using,
- 1:17:37Speaker 4: you know, there's there's twenty thirty bullskulls in there. There
- 1:17:41Speaker 4: was a sixty eight and a seventy two. The sixty
- 1:17:45Speaker 4: eight was like my thigh his bases and I'm guessing
- 1:17:49Speaker 4: weighed close to one hundred pounds, I mean amazing. So yeah,
- 1:17:54Speaker 4: like packing this thing out, my guess is around sixty
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: Corey says more. Yeah, maybe it's hard to say, but yeah,
- 1:18:04Speaker 4: it's like a lifetime for me than that. Let's put
- 1:18:08Speaker 4: the sucker down.
- 1:18:09Speaker 2: Okay, thanks for bringing that in. Yeah, that's that's a
- 1:18:15Speaker 2: lot of effort. Brody's really committed to this episode. Again,
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: if you're just listening at home, we were just looking
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: at Brody's how wide was yours? Mid fifty five inch
- 1:18:28Speaker 2: Alaska Yukon moves head beautiful? All right, Corey, Corey, would
- 1:18:35Speaker 2: you bring Corey brought an antler too.
- 1:18:38Speaker 3: It's the Horn episode, all right?
- 1:18:40Speaker 2: That thing is dark as can be. You found it
- 1:18:42Speaker 2: that dark if you and you added some shoe posa.
- 1:18:45Speaker 2: I told him it looks like a Roosevelt. Yeah.
- 1:18:47Speaker 3: Okay, now now looking it in the camera, it looks
- 1:18:49Speaker 3: a little better. But this is the coolest shed I've
- 1:18:52Speaker 3: ever found. And if you're if you're listening and not watching,
- 1:18:57Speaker 3: you should probably go watch. It's got teeny tiny fronts,
- 1:19:01Speaker 3: but it's third crab claws and splits and he's got maybe.
- 1:19:06Speaker 2: I ain't no crab claw, dude, you can't call that
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: a crab claw?
- 1:19:09Speaker 3: What is it? Lobster claw?
- 1:19:10Speaker 2: No? But I mean it's just like a three yeah. Yeah,
- 1:19:14Speaker 2: crab claw means it's like little bitty crab claw. It's
- 1:19:18Speaker 2: huge though.
- 1:19:19Speaker 3: Yeah, and I don't know that's like a twenty one
- 1:19:21Speaker 3: inch in line coming out of off his fourth off
- 1:19:24Speaker 3: his royal time.
- 1:19:25Speaker 2: Dude, that ding listen, Corey his numbers. There's no way
- 1:19:30Speaker 2: that's twenty one inches. That extra point there. It might be.
- 1:19:34Speaker 3: Seventeen you count it from down here there.
- 1:19:38Speaker 2: I'll have to learn give it, give it the old hand.
- 1:19:41Speaker 3: It might be seventeen. I can't remember the whole thing.
- 1:19:44Speaker 3: The whole thing scored. This shed scored one seventy eight.
- 1:19:49Speaker 3: And that's not guessing. That's yeah, boone and Crockett.
- 1:19:52Speaker 4: So one A three sixty plus so four hundo with
- 1:19:56Speaker 4: the spread yep, dang.
- 1:19:59Speaker 3: But the coolest part about this is how I found it.
- 1:20:01Speaker 3: So this bowl, Phil, I don't know if you want
- 1:20:03Speaker 3: to play the video.
- 1:20:04Speaker 6: Oh yeah, hold on a second.
- 1:20:07Speaker 3: I used to guide on a ranch in Montana here
- 1:20:10Speaker 3: and this bowl was found in September. This video was
- 1:20:16Speaker 3: taken by the ranch owner, slash Outfitter, And this is
- 1:20:21Speaker 3: the first time we had seen this bowl, anybody had
- 1:20:23Speaker 3: seen him. And this was in September twenty sixteen.
- 1:20:26Speaker 2: And is that the antler you're holding?
- 1:20:29Speaker 3: No, so this is so. Yeah, it's probably a year
- 1:20:33Speaker 3: or two years after this shed was dropped. When this
- 1:20:36Speaker 3: video was tacked, you can tell you regressed a little
- 1:20:39Speaker 3: bit every time. It's a little bit shorter, at least
- 1:20:42Speaker 3: on this side. Look at that in line off is
- 1:20:45Speaker 3: fourth is only seven inches.
- 1:20:48Speaker 4: They ever get him, so.
- 1:20:51Speaker 3: We couldn't kill him in September, we didn't have that
- 1:20:53Speaker 3: many hunters in archery season, but come rifle season, that
- 1:20:56Speaker 3: was like the bowl everybody wanted, just because he was
- 1:20:58Speaker 3: such a freak. I called him t Rex because he
- 1:21:00Speaker 3: just looked like a dinosaur.
- 1:21:02Speaker 4: Good name choice.
- 1:21:03Speaker 3: Yeah, And he eluded a lot of hunters for three weeks,
- 1:21:06Speaker 3: and my hunter on the third week really wanted to
- 1:21:09Speaker 3: fully commit to finding this one. And now the bull
- 1:21:11Speaker 3: had moved a few miles from where this video was
- 1:21:14Speaker 3: taken to another spot like a little juniper hell hole,
- 1:21:17Speaker 3: kind of Missouri break style, and he would people would
- 1:21:22Speaker 3: see him from far off, like not being able to
- 1:21:25Speaker 3: put much of a stock on him, or they'd see
- 1:21:27Speaker 3: him and try and put a stock on him. And
- 1:21:28Speaker 3: he eluded a lot of hunters, a lot of really
- 1:21:31Speaker 3: good guides that have killed a lot of elk, and
- 1:21:34Speaker 3: on the third week, my client and I were sitting
- 1:21:36Speaker 3: up on a knob looking down into the spot where
- 1:21:38Speaker 3: he was last seen. We caught a glimpse of a
- 1:21:40Speaker 3: huge bowl by himself at like eleven o'clock in the afternoon,
- 1:21:43Speaker 3: coming over a hill. We dropped everything and rallied down
- 1:21:46Speaker 3: to try and kill him, and the second drainage that
- 1:21:49Speaker 3: we went through, I stumbled across this shed sitting there
- 1:21:53Speaker 3: and nobody had seen him prior to that year, so
- 1:21:55Speaker 3: he was he was on the ranch obviously, at least
- 1:21:59Speaker 3: in the spring. I'm assuming the year before, maybe two
- 1:22:02Speaker 3: years before, but probably the year before. And then the
- 1:22:04Speaker 3: next week we didn't end up killing the bowl. It
- 1:22:07Speaker 3: ended up being another giant seven point that we passed
- 1:22:10Speaker 3: up because he really wanted this one. He ended up
- 1:22:12Speaker 3: killing a different bowl on the last day, but on
- 1:22:14Speaker 3: the next final week of the hunt, one of the
- 1:22:18Speaker 3: last days of rifle season, this bowl was killed in
- 1:22:20Speaker 3: the same exact area by another hunter, so he did
- 1:22:24Speaker 3: go down eventually. But yeah, it's the coolest shed I'll
- 1:22:28Speaker 3: ever find. And I'm not a shed hunter. I just
- 1:22:30Speaker 3: pick him up when I come across him. Shed hunting's
- 1:22:32Speaker 3: gotten a little out of control these days. And if
- 1:22:35Speaker 3: it's if it's hip, I'm not doing it.
- 1:22:40Speaker 2: Yeah, that's an amazing one.
- 1:22:41Speaker 3: That's my story.
- 1:22:42Speaker 2: That's so definite. Once in a lifetime shed.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: Yeah, Philler, we at the two hour mark.
- 1:22:47Speaker 6: Yet not quite that I think. I think, I think
- 1:22:50Speaker 6: there is going to be an extra commercial break, so.
- 1:22:52Speaker 2: We'll hit ninety minutes. Questions. I saw one, I for
- 1:22:56Speaker 2: sure want to answer about one week in November.
- 1:22:58Speaker 6: Oh yes, please do always skeptical to choose ones based
- 1:23:01Speaker 6: on programming that I don't know about, and I don't
- 1:23:03Speaker 6: want to, you know, cause any hubbubs. So if you
- 1:23:05Speaker 6: want to answer that one, to have at it.
- 1:23:07Speaker 2: Yeah, I can't remember who what the fella's name was.
- 1:23:11Speaker 2: I'll try to Forgal for that matter. But they asked
- 1:23:15Speaker 2: if there's going to be another one week in November show,
- 1:23:17Speaker 2: and if you didn't watch it, should go back and
- 1:23:20Speaker 2: watch it. But that's where a bunch of us were
- 1:23:22Speaker 2: hunting different locations, but on the same days, and then
- 1:23:25Speaker 2: we sort of showed the communication that we had through
- 1:23:29Speaker 2: text chats and just phone calls and sort of as
- 1:23:33Speaker 2: the one week in November went on, I thought it
- 1:23:35Speaker 2: was a cool idea. The problem with it is that,
- 1:23:38Speaker 2: like every kind of wants to be hunting somewhere, sometime,
- 1:23:42Speaker 2: we have other hunts that we might want to be doing.
- 1:23:45Speaker 2: It was hard to get everybody to do another one
- 1:23:48Speaker 2: cause I think we did two seasons so far. So
- 1:23:51Speaker 2: we just got an invite to go hunt somewhere pretty
- 1:23:55Speaker 2: far south, still in the United States, but southern where
- 1:23:58Speaker 2: the rut is later, and we could do this in January.
- 1:24:02Speaker 2: So we're trying to put together a one week in
- 1:24:04Speaker 2: January where we all would be on this on the
- 1:24:08Speaker 2: same location, hunting the same white tails.
- 1:24:11Speaker 3: That's cool.
- 1:24:12Speaker 2: Yeah, So it's in the works. Hopefully we will put
- 1:24:15Speaker 2: it pull it off this upcoming January, and you'll probably
- 1:24:19Speaker 2: get to see it fall of twenty six. Thanks for
- 1:24:21Speaker 2: the question, Garrett.
- 1:24:22Speaker 3: I still think we need to do one week in September,
- 1:24:26Speaker 3: get four guys out in different different states, hunt out,
- 1:24:29Speaker 3: see what the RT's like. Mm hmmm, use in reach.
- 1:24:32Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, we totally forgot. We're gonna check. I
- 1:24:35Speaker 2: forgot to put this in the intro. Let's check to
- 1:24:39Speaker 2: see if Yanni drew his wyoming.
- 1:24:42Speaker 6: Elk tag. Oh, that's a great idea. I'll play a
- 1:24:45Speaker 6: little music.
- 1:24:46Speaker 3: Yeah, we got time.
- 1:24:47Speaker 6: I'll play the price of white product music here.
- 1:24:50Speaker 4: Now, you seriously haven't looked yet.
- 1:24:52Speaker 2: I haven't. Oh boy, how long do you drop the
- 1:24:55Speaker 2: son of a gun?
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: No?
- 1:24:56Speaker 2: It no, it's signed me out Ago Yanni.
- 1:25:02Speaker 3: How many points do you have?
- 1:25:04Speaker 2: I think I had fourteen going into this year.
- 1:25:07Speaker 3: Must be hunting for a trophy unit.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: Then oh buddy, oh buddy, verify the information is correct. Yes, continue, This.
- 1:25:17Speaker 6: Is compelling podcasting. I love it. This was this was
- 1:25:21Speaker 6: Corey's this was my idea. It sounds like I'm being sarcastic,
- 1:25:25Speaker 6: but this is fun. Well, yeah, to do it live
- 1:25:28Speaker 6: on the show.
- 1:25:29Speaker 2: I didn't draw way non resident Malago and non resident
- 1:25:33Speaker 2: special elk unsuccessful for both man. Dang.
- 1:25:38Speaker 3: Times tough out here in the Western States.
- 1:25:40Speaker 2: It's crash back to the hoping board or whatever.
- 1:25:45Speaker 4: It'll just be to general season.
- 1:25:48Speaker 2: What a down? Or to end this podcast on.
- 1:25:53Speaker 6: Breaking we have breaking news from the live chat bring
- 1:25:56Speaker 6: it Randall Williams. Oh not hello, Mogo, I mean yes, hello,
- 1:26:00Speaker 6: but he said, did you hear, guys hear about Randall's
- 1:26:02Speaker 6: turkey hout this morning?
- 1:26:03Speaker 4: He got one?
- 1:26:07Speaker 2: Who was this guy?
- 1:26:09Speaker 6: I don't know. Possibly Max. I just know he didn't
- 1:26:12Speaker 6: invite me. But that's fine.
- 1:26:13Speaker 2: Pete Munich probably wow, way to go random breaking news.
- 1:26:19Speaker 6: Uh that bad luck for Yanni. Good look for Randall.
- 1:26:22Speaker 6: Congrats Randall.
- 1:26:23Speaker 3: He probably was hunting at Walmart.
- 1:26:26Speaker 6: Matias is upset that we didn't talk more ice fishing
- 1:26:30Speaker 6: this winter. Do you guys have any ice fishing stories
- 1:26:32Speaker 6: or anything fun happening?
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: Oh?
- 1:26:34Speaker 2: Man, I like it's because everybody's giving up on the
- 1:26:37Speaker 2: ice here in uh south in southwestern Montana.
- 1:26:42Speaker 4: There was good ice this year.
- 1:26:44Speaker 2: No, no, no, no, yeah, sorry I phrased that wrong.
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: They've given up on the fishing beneath the ice, whether
- 1:26:49Speaker 2: it's good or not, you just have to go a
- 1:26:52Speaker 2: long ways. Like there isn't great ice fishing. I mean,
- 1:26:55Speaker 2: I mean, if you're happy just catching these little perch
- 1:26:57Speaker 2: and blue gills out of the local ponds, sure, yeah,
- 1:27:00Speaker 2: but yeah, we just don't have it great. And so
- 1:27:03Speaker 2: I think everybody's like they don't know what's to drive
- 1:27:05Speaker 2: four hours for ice fishing? Yeah?
- 1:27:08Speaker 3: No, sorry, no good stories this year fly fishing this winter.
- 1:27:12Speaker 6: At the top, before the show even started, Tucker said,
- 1:27:14Speaker 6: how quick do we think the removal of federal lands
- 1:27:16Speaker 6: from the big beautiful bill will come up. Well, Tucker,
- 1:27:18Speaker 6: it's been about ninety minutes, so you guys want to
- 1:27:22Speaker 6: say anything about that?
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I figured by now hopefully most of
- 1:27:28Speaker 4: the people out there know what happened, that the sell
- 1:27:34Speaker 4: off of public lands was withdrawn, was cut out of
- 1:27:37Speaker 4: the bill, and our our home state Senator Ryan Zinkey
- 1:27:43Speaker 4: kind of led the charge to go rogue and go
- 1:27:47Speaker 4: against his Republican counterparts along with a small group of
- 1:27:51Speaker 4: other Western congressmen, and so that stuff got cut out.
- 1:27:55Speaker 4: It's not the land's not going to get sold. So
- 1:27:58Speaker 4: it's good news. But I'm assuming by now most people
- 1:28:01Speaker 4: have great What.
- 1:28:03Speaker 2: Was interesting to me is that I didn't catch the
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: talk about the public lands sell off anywhere besides my
- 1:28:12Speaker 2: sort of like hunting Instagram channel.
- 1:28:14Speaker 4: I saw it in a couple of like major news. Yeah,
- 1:28:18Speaker 4: so it was like it was almost and they mentioned
- 1:28:20Speaker 4: this morning when they went through what was cut out
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: of the bill. It was mentioned in there. It's great news. Unfortunately,
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: like I think that a lot of people aren't aware
- 1:28:32Speaker 4: that it, Like like there's a couple of things that
- 1:28:36Speaker 4: remained in that bill which aren't cool, which is the
- 1:28:41Speaker 4: boundary waters like mining right next to it could still happen,
- 1:28:48Speaker 4: and protections in anwar are being lifted Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
- 1:28:54Speaker 4: So while lands aren't getting sold, there's certainly public lands
- 1:28:59Speaker 4: that are are still in danger. So there's a reason
- 1:29:02Speaker 4: to keep paying attention to what happens with this.
- 1:29:04Speaker 2: That's right, So take a break for a day or two,
- 1:29:06Speaker 2: and then we got to get right back to the
- 1:29:08Speaker 2: fight and give your reps another call. Tell them how
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: you feel about mining next to the wilderness area in Minnesota,
- 1:29:17Speaker 2: and how you feel about drilling in an warm.
- 1:29:20Speaker 6: Yep yep, Devin says. Heynnas seen the new video with
- 1:29:25Speaker 6: you and Randall blowing stuff up with the new six
- 1:29:27Speaker 6: to seventy seven Fury cartridge. What was your favorite thing
- 1:29:29Speaker 6: to blow up that day and what did you like
- 1:29:32Speaker 6: about the cartridge?
- 1:29:34Speaker 2: Ah, the watermelon definitely looked the coolest. You know. We
- 1:29:39Speaker 2: did blow up some some sort of fake ballistics gel
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: animals that also had blood inside of the ballistics gel,
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: which was surprising. We didn't know that was a part
- 1:29:51Speaker 2: of it. So that was fun too. But I'd say,
- 1:29:55Speaker 2: if you're gonna go shoot something, the watermelon is the
- 1:29:58Speaker 2: thing to do. It's a little way, so you might
- 1:30:01Speaker 2: have to buy two so you can eat the other one. Ah,
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: the cartridge. Yeah, man, it's a short action, so it's
- 1:30:09Speaker 2: gonna be a lightweight gun with magnum power. But don't
- 1:30:13Speaker 2: you like about that? Yeah? I haven't gotten a hunt
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: with it yet, Hopefully this fall I will. I'll let
- 1:30:20Speaker 2: you know then.
- 1:30:21Speaker 6: Cool, that's not what I wanted to do.
- 1:30:25Speaker 2: Well, it's a big bull Cory. Hey, he got the
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: early morning turkey too. Looks like the sun's not even
- 1:30:33Speaker 2: over the horizon.
- 1:30:35Speaker 4: Sent a roost rocket up there to get him.
- 1:30:39Speaker 2: I've heard that one. Bro. That's good Randall wouldn't kill
- 1:30:42Speaker 2: a bird off the roost. That's a beauty.
- 1:30:47Speaker 6: Jackson says. If any of you used thermocell for mosquitoes,
- 1:30:51Speaker 6: I never heard them mentioned on the show when the
- 1:30:53Speaker 6: topic of mosquitoes is brought up. They work like magic
- 1:30:55Speaker 6: for Jackson.
- 1:30:57Speaker 2: Oh yeah.
- 1:30:58Speaker 6: Or if you guys have any other miss tips maybe.
- 1:31:02Speaker 2: Oh man, hard hard to beat thermoicelle along with deep
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: everything else. But thermo cells are great.
- 1:31:10Speaker 3: How heavy are they? I've never held one like heavy
- 1:31:13Speaker 3: A couple carrying around on a ten mile bear hunt.
- 1:31:18Speaker 2: I mean, yeah, if the if the mosquitoes were really
- 1:31:21Speaker 2: really bad, sure, because they're light. They're kind of bulky,
- 1:31:25Speaker 2: but they're light.
- 1:31:26Speaker 3: M Yeah, cool, I need to try one.
- 1:31:30Speaker 6: I don't know I have any of you. Is anyone
- 1:31:32Speaker 6: in this room hunted a mountain goat.
- 1:31:35Speaker 3: I've helped a couple of different buddies harvests.
- 1:31:37Speaker 6: Mount Okay, so yes Esbo says that they drew a
- 1:31:39Speaker 6: once in a lifetime mountain goat, Idaho tag any tips.
- 1:31:43Speaker 3: Get them before the snow gets too deep.
- 1:31:47Speaker 2: Don't learn the unit man in the country.
- 1:31:51Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, make sure if you're not in mountain shaped train, Yeah,
- 1:31:56Speaker 3: get in goat shape. Make sure you know the difference
- 1:31:58Speaker 3: between a nanny and a billy. That's tough.
- 1:32:02Speaker 2: Depending Yeah, he might most go tags though, aren't.
- 1:32:08Speaker 3: Most of them are? But yeah, I might as well
- 1:32:10Speaker 3: aim for a billy for sure.
- 1:32:14Speaker 6: Let's see, does anyone have any good crayfish or crawdad
- 1:32:18Speaker 6: recipes from our guy Leland. He's helping run a crayfish
- 1:32:21Speaker 6: BHA event in Arizona and he needs recipes to share.
- 1:32:25Speaker 4: Crawfish A two f a man. That stuff's great, and
- 1:32:29Speaker 4: then just the old crawfish boil. You gotta do that too, yeah.
- 1:32:34Speaker 2: Uh, specific recipes, I don't know.
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: I would.
- 1:32:37Speaker 2: I would just go to cajuncooking dot com for those two.
- 1:32:41Speaker 4: Any shrimp recipe it worked too or whatever?
- 1:32:44Speaker 3: You know?
- 1:32:46Speaker 2: Yeah, go, but what's that seafood boil that they like
- 1:32:50Speaker 2: to eat low Country or oh? That like the brand? Yeah,
- 1:32:54Speaker 2: I don't know. I think it's the brand is Louisiana,
- 1:32:58Speaker 2: isn't It might be louis You were down there for
- 1:33:01Speaker 2: a bunch of those boils, don't you remember, Thanks Louisyana brand. Yeah,
- 1:33:05Speaker 2: just buy like, go online and order a big box full.
- 1:33:09Speaker 2: They got jugs of the boil. You just pour in
- 1:33:12Speaker 2: with the water. Yeah, then you just dump all your
- 1:33:15Speaker 2: ingredients in there. It's easy.
- 1:33:17Speaker 6: Okay.
- 1:33:18Speaker 2: Uh.
- 1:33:18Speaker 6: You know what, guys, we just set the record for
- 1:33:20Speaker 6: the longest episode of media.
- 1:33:22Speaker 2: We did it. We did that last time I was host.
- 1:33:29Speaker 6: Let's go ahead and call it there.
- 1:33:31Speaker 2: I hope everybody enjoyed it.
- 1:33:32Speaker 6: I hope you know that you're completely even slowly moving
- 1:33:35Speaker 6: out of frame, Yanni, and now nobody can see you
- 1:33:38Speaker 6: at all.
- 1:33:39Speaker 2: I hope you all enjoyed it. I had a lot
- 1:33:42Speaker 2: of fun retelling our hunting stories and listening to Brody
- 1:33:45Speaker 2: and Corey's hunt stories. We should tell more hunt stories
- 1:33:47Speaker 2: on this show. You like hunting stories. Make sure you're
- 1:33:50Speaker 2: right in and say and put uh you know, attention, Spencer,
- 1:33:56Speaker 2: we love hunting stories.
- 1:33:58Speaker 3: I'll read it.
- 1:33:59Speaker 6: Maybe maybe we'll just have we'll have a two hosts
- 1:34:02Speaker 6: show soon. It'll just be you and Spencer, and you
- 1:34:04Speaker 6: guys can kind of compete for you know, meandering, fun
- 1:34:08Speaker 6: hunting stories without any sort of you know, like like
- 1:34:11Speaker 6: fenced in. And then you got Spencer trying to move
- 1:34:14Speaker 6: the show along. I think there's a lot of contention there.
- 1:34:16Speaker 6: I think it could be a really fun show. We'll
- 1:34:18Speaker 6: put a pull up at the end of see which
- 1:34:19Speaker 6: which format people like the best.
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: I just ran a race called Don't Fence me In?
- 1:34:23Speaker 2: So oh nice. Don't fence me in? Spencer, thank you
- 1:34:27Speaker 2: all for listening. We'll see you next week.
