- 1:32Speaker 4: The story you are about to hear is true.
- 1:38Speaker 3: The names have been changed to protect the innocent.
- 1:40Speaker 4: The Big Hate.
- 1:48Speaker 3: You're a detective sergeant.
- 1:50Speaker 5: You're assigned a homicide detail.
- 1:52Speaker 4: A 25-year-old man is found hiding in a freight car
- 1:55Speaker 4: in a deserted train yard. In his arms, he holds
- 1:58Speaker 4: the body of a dead woman. The victim's identity is unknown.
- 2:02Speaker 4: The suspect refuses to talk. Your job?
- 2:04Speaker 5: Investigate.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Dragnet.
- 2:16Speaker 6: The documented drama of an actual crime. For the next
- 2:19Speaker 6: 30 minutes, in cooperation with the Los Angeles Police Department,
- 2:23Speaker 6: you will travel step by step on the side of
- 2:25Speaker 6: the law through an actual case transcribed from official police files.
- 2:29Speaker 6: From beginning to end, from crime to punishment, Dragnet is
- 2:33Speaker 6: the story of your police force in action.
- 2:39Speaker 3: It was Tuesday, January 18th. It was cold in Los Angeles.
- 2:42Speaker 7: We were working the night watch out of homicide detail.
- 2:45Speaker 7: My partner's Frank Smith. The boss is Captain Warman. My
- 2:47Speaker 7: name's Friday. I was on the way back from the
- 2:49Speaker 7: record bureau, and it was 10.38 p.m. when I got
- 2:51Speaker 7: to room 42. Homicide detail.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Joe?
- 2:55Speaker 7: Hi.
- 2:55Speaker 3: Did they cop out to anything yet? Nothing.
- 2:58Speaker 5: I keep asking him questions. Might as well be talking
- 3:00Speaker 5: to myself. He might be in a state of shock.
- 3:03Speaker 3: No, I don't think so.
- 3:03Speaker 5: You got anything on him from R & I?
- 3:05Speaker 3: No, he's clean. You and Stahl want to get over
- 3:07Speaker 3: to the morgue, roll the dead woman's prints?
- 3:09Speaker 5: Yeah, sure. Maybe you'll have better luck with it. See
- 3:11Speaker 5: you later.
- 3:12Speaker 3: Yeah, sure. Here's your driver's license, Gordon. Better put it
- 3:24Speaker 3: back in your wallet.
- 3:26Speaker 5: Gordon?
- 3:27Speaker 2: Gordon?
- 3:28Speaker 3: Put it back in your wallet.
- 3:32Speaker 7: Now look, son, I don't think you're helping yourself much
- 3:34Speaker 7: by keeping quiet.
- 3:35Speaker 3: There's a lot of explaining to be done here. I'm
- 3:36Speaker 3: afraid you're the only one that can do it.
- 3:40Speaker 5: Gordon?
- 3:42Speaker 7: All right, son, it's just a matter of time. You're
- 3:44Speaker 7: going to have to tell somebody sooner or later. Why
- 3:45Speaker 7: don't you tell us now? Come on, what do you say? Well, look, son,
- 3:51Speaker 7: I'll tell you the truth. I don't get the reasoning
- 3:53Speaker 7: behind all this. We know there's nothing wrong with you.
- 3:56Speaker 7: We know you can talk, all right. You talked to
- 3:57Speaker 7: the officers in the radio car who brought you in.
- 3:59Speaker 7: You know as well as I do, you're going to
- 4:01Speaker 7: have to explain what's happened here. You're going to have
- 4:03Speaker 7: to explain that dead body. You want to get it
- 4:05Speaker 7: over with now? Look, Gordon, if you didn't kill the woman,
- 4:09Speaker 7: you haven't anything to worry about. And if you did,
- 4:11Speaker 7: we're going to find out anyway. Who was the woman, Gordon?
- 4:18Speaker 7: Will you tell me that much?
- 4:19Speaker 3: What's her name?
- 4:21Speaker 7: You know her very long? Did you know her very long?
- 4:25Speaker 7: What was she to you? Do you want to tell
- 4:27Speaker 7: me that? She's a fairly middle-aged woman in her early 50s,
- 4:31Speaker 7: I'd say.
- 4:31Speaker 3: Is that about right? Was she your mother, Gordon? Older sister, maybe?
- 4:38Speaker 3: Any relation at all? What's the matter, son? You feeling sick?
- 4:48Speaker 3: How about a cigarette?
- 4:49Speaker 5: All right.
- 4:51Speaker 3: Bother you if I smoke? I hope you haven't got
- 5:00Speaker 3: the idea we're trying to trick you into anything, Gordon.
- 5:02Speaker 7: We've got a dead woman on our hands here. We've
- 5:04Speaker 7: got to find out why she's dead. Now, what do
- 5:06Speaker 7: you say? No use looking up at the clock, son.
- 5:09Speaker 7: We're stuck here till we find out about that woman.
- 5:12Speaker 7: That goes for both of us.
- 5:16Speaker 3: Homicide Friday. Oh, yeah, Jack. No, not right now. Ought
- 5:20Speaker 3: to be back in about a half hour. Yeah, a
- 5:22Speaker 3: half hour. Right, I'll tell them to call you. Bye.
- 5:27Speaker 3: I got an idea, Gordon.
- 5:28Speaker 5: What?
- 5:28Speaker 3: Might help set your mind at ease. Now, number one,
- 5:32Speaker 3: if you think we're out to build.
- 5:33Speaker 7: A frame against you on this thing, let me tell
- 5:34Speaker 7: you that you're wrong, and I'll prove it to you, son.
- 5:36Speaker 7: I'm going to tell you exactly what we know about
- 5:38Speaker 7: this case, everything. And when I'm finished, maybe you can
- 5:40Speaker 7: fill in the blank spots for.
- 5:41Speaker 5: Us, huh?
- 5:43Speaker 3: What's the matter, you're heady? Some aspirin in my locker
- 5:45Speaker 3: there if you want some.
- 5:48Speaker 8: No?
- 5:49Speaker 1: All right.
- 5:50Speaker 3: Here's all we know about it.
- 5:54Speaker 7: One of our radio cars, 1A4, answered a call from
- 5:57Speaker 7: the night watchman down in the freight yards.
- 5:59Speaker 3: He told the officers that he'd.
- 6:00Speaker 7: Spotted a man wandering around down at the far end
- 6:03Speaker 7: of the train yards near the west gate. Watchman only
- 6:06Speaker 7: saw him at a distance, but he said he could
- 6:08Speaker 7: make out the man and that he saw that he
- 6:10Speaker 7: had a woman with him. She must have either been
- 6:12Speaker 7: sick or she had too much to drink because the
- 6:14Speaker 7: man appeared to be dragging her along with him. The
- 6:17Speaker 7: two of them disappeared behind a line of boxcars on
- 6:19Speaker 7: the siding. When the watchman went out to look for
- 6:21Speaker 7: the two people, he couldn't find them. Called a radio car,
- 6:25Speaker 7: and when the officers got there, they started searching. I
- 6:28Speaker 7: finally found you hiding back in the corner of an
- 6:30Speaker 7: empty boxcar there.
- 6:32Speaker 3: You were holding that dead woman in your arms.
- 6:35Speaker 7: There wasn't anything the officers could see that might have
- 6:37Speaker 7: caused the woman's death. There were no marks on the body,
- 6:40Speaker 7: nothing visible anyway. When they tried to question you, all
- 6:43Speaker 7: that you'd tell them was your name and that you
- 6:45Speaker 7: didn't want to live, that you didn't care.
- 6:46Speaker 3: What happened to you. That's about the size of it, Gordon.
- 6:50Speaker 3: Did I leave anything out? Gordon?
- 6:53Speaker 1: Oh, yeah.
- 6:54Speaker 3: There is something else.
- 6:55Speaker 7: From what we could gather, the dead woman had been
- 6:57Speaker 7: doing some drinking before she died. Matter of fact, looks
- 6:59Speaker 7: like she was a pretty heavy drinker.
- 7:01Speaker 3: And another thing.
- 7:02Speaker 7: We know you and the woman got into the train
- 7:04Speaker 7: yard down by the west gate. We know that you
- 7:06Speaker 7: dragged your body across the freight yards to that empty boxcar.
- 7:09Speaker 3: That they found you hiding in.
- 7:10Speaker 7: The heel marks from her shoes lead from the sidewalk
- 7:13Speaker 7: through the dirt directly to the door of that boxcar.
- 7:16Speaker 3: We could see where you.
- 7:17Speaker 7: Dragged your body from the door back to the corner
- 7:19Speaker 7: of the car. Now, that's the whole story so far, Gordon.
- 7:23Speaker 7: You want to fill in the rest?
- 7:25Speaker 3: Son, how about it? Who is the woman? All right, look.
- 7:34Speaker 7: How about these items we found in your pocket, Gordon?
- 7:36Speaker 7: This address book here. Is this the woman's name in here?
- 7:39Speaker 7: Or this handkerchief with a lipstick on it?
- 7:44Speaker 3: Were you out with another girl tonight? Were you, son?
- 7:47Speaker 3: If you were, it might help to tell us who
- 7:49Speaker 3: she is. Do you hear me, son?
- 7:53Speaker 7: How about this lady's ring you had in your pocket?
- 7:55Speaker 7: Name Elizabeth engraved on the inside.
- 7:57Speaker 3: Does that tie in at all, Gord? Who's it belong to?
- 8:03Speaker 3: Homicide Friday. Oh, yeah, Frank. You got an ID on it?
- 8:07Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 8:09Speaker 5: H-O-F-F-M-A-N.
- 8:12Speaker 3: 2N?
- 8:13Speaker 1: Right.
- 8:14Speaker 3: You going out there now? Okay, take O'Donnell with you, huh? Right,
- 8:17Speaker 3: let me hear from him.
- 8:18Speaker 1: What?
- 8:19Speaker 3: No, no, not yet.
- 8:20Speaker 7: No.
- 8:20Speaker 3: All right.
- 8:21Speaker 1: Bye.
- 8:24Speaker 7: That was my partner, Gordon. The officer who was in
- 8:26Speaker 7: here with you. They took the dead woman's fingerprints.
- 8:28Speaker 3: They've got her identified, son.
- 8:31Speaker 7: It's Elizabeth Hoffman, age 52 years, music teacher. Last known address,
- 8:36Speaker 7: 5473 6th Avenue. They're on their way out there now
- 8:40Speaker 7: to check it.
- 8:40Speaker 3: All right, relax, Gordon. That window doesn't lead anywhere.
- 8:44Speaker 7: Now, you want to take another look at this ring?
- 8:48Speaker 7: You got a fair idea that it means something, Gordon.
- 8:50Speaker 7: They examined the dead woman's hands. They know she was
- 8:52Speaker 7: wearing a ring recently. Her name's Elizabeth Hoffman. Name Elizabeth
- 8:56Speaker 7: engraved inside this ring. Now, look, boy, we're going to
- 9:01Speaker 7: get the answer sooner or later.
- 9:02Speaker 5: How about it?
- 9:02Speaker 3: What were you doing with this ring in your pocket? Now,
- 9:06Speaker 3: let me tell you something, young fella. I don't know
- 9:07Speaker 3: what's bothering you, but whatever it is, we're going to
- 9:09Speaker 3: find it out.
- 9:09Speaker 7: Now, get it through your head. You're in a bad spot.
- 9:11Speaker 7: If you're not interested in helping yourself, then neither am I.
- 9:13Speaker 7: The monkey's on your back. You're going to have to
- 9:15Speaker 7: help scratch it off.
- 9:15Speaker 3: Now, get with it.
- 9:16Speaker 5: What's it all about?
- 9:20Speaker 3: All right, let's have your driver's license. Come on, get
- 9:22Speaker 3: it out. All right, I'll take it. Gordon John Miller,
- 9:28Speaker 3: 2055 Malcolm Avenue, Los Angeles. Hello, information. Do you have
- 9:40Speaker 3: a phone listing for 2055 Malcolm Avenue? Thank you. Yes, ma'am. Mm-hmm.
- 9:50Speaker 1: 3-2-1-9-2.
- 9:50Speaker 3: Thanks a lot.
- 9:59Speaker 5: Put the phone down.
- 10:00Speaker 3: You ready to tell us?
- 10:03Speaker 5: No, I won't tell you.
- 10:04Speaker 3: All right. Any way you want it, Gordon.
- 10:09Speaker 5: You can't call them. You can't. I won't let you.
- 10:12Speaker 5: You can't call them. All right.
- 10:13Speaker 2: Take it easy.
- 10:13Speaker 8: They can't tell you.
- 10:14Speaker 5: They don't know.
- 10:14Speaker 4: Give me the phone.
- 10:15Speaker 5: You can't. All right.
- 10:15Speaker 1: Sit down.
- 10:16Speaker 8: I said sit down.
- 10:17Speaker 3: If you won't answer the questions, we'll find somebody who will.
- 10:19Speaker 3: Give me your wrist. Now, sit still.
- 10:25Speaker 7: Now, the sooner you get it through your head you're
- 10:26Speaker 7: not here on a traffic ticket, the better. You're going
- 10:28Speaker 7: to stay cuffed to that chair until we're ready to
- 10:30Speaker 7: book you. I'm sick of treating you like a baby.
- 10:33Speaker 3: They can't tell you.
- 10:34Speaker 2: They don't understand.
- 10:37Speaker 6: They can't tell you.
- 10:38Speaker 3: They can't be any worse than you. Now, sit still there.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Shh.
- 10:44Speaker 5: Shh.
- 10:51Speaker 7: Hello, is this the Miller residence? 2055 Malcolm Avenue? My
- 10:55Speaker 7: name's Friday, ma'am. Police department, Central Homicide.
- 10:57Speaker 3: Who's this speaking, please?
- 11:00Speaker 8: I see.
- 11:00Speaker 3: Miss Miller, are you related to a Gordon Miller? Your brother? Uh-huh. No,
- 11:05Speaker 3: he's not hurt. There's nothing wrong with him.
- 11:07Speaker 9: Ma'am?
- 11:08Speaker 3: Yes, he's here. We're holding him. I wonder if you'd
- 11:10Speaker 3: be kind enough to come down here to the city hall.
- 11:12Speaker 3: It's the city hall, yes, ma'am.
- 11:13Speaker 5: It's important.
- 11:15Speaker 3: We'd like to talk to you. No, as soon as possible. Yeah,
- 11:18Speaker 3: you can get in through the Main Street entrance. Main Street, M-A-I-N.
- 11:22Speaker 7: It's room 42, 4-2 on the main floor. Just ask
- 11:24Speaker 7: for Friday. That's my name. All right, thank you.
- 11:27Speaker 4: Goodbye.
- 11:27Speaker 3: It's your sister, Lillian. She's on her way down, Gordon.
- 11:32Speaker 5: It's not going to help. She doesn't know. None of
- 11:35Speaker 5: them know.
- 11:36Speaker 3: Who's them? You mean your family?
- 11:38Speaker 5: You shouldn't have called. They don't know about it. They
- 11:41Speaker 5: can't tell you. Why did you have to call?
- 11:45Speaker 3: You know why, Gordon. We gave you plenty of chance
- 11:47Speaker 3: to tell us yourself. The answers have to come from somewhere.
- 11:50Speaker 5: What answers? What do you want me to say?
- 11:55Speaker 3: Homicide Friday.
- 11:56Speaker 1: What?
- 11:58Speaker 3: How's that again? No, I'm afraid you have the wrong extension.
- 12:01Speaker 3: You want vice detail. Just a minute. I'll have your
- 12:03Speaker 3: call transferred. Yeah, would you give this call to 2607? Yeah,
- 12:08Speaker 3: thank you.
- 12:13Speaker 5: I asked you What do you want me to say?
- 12:16Speaker 4: What do you want?
- 12:16Speaker 3: It's pretty simple, Gordon. Just tell us what happened tonight,
- 12:18Speaker 3: will you?
- 12:20Speaker 5: She's dead, isn't she? Elizabeth?
- 12:22Speaker 3: Yes, that's right.
- 12:24Speaker 5: There's nothing else to say. I killed her.
- 12:27Speaker 3: Why did you kill her, son?
- 12:29Speaker 5: I'm not sure, really.
- 12:30Speaker 3: I'm not.
- 12:32Speaker 5: I think I felt sorry for her. I killed her, though.
- 12:36Speaker 5: I know that one.
- 12:37Speaker 3: You murdered the woman, but you don't know why?
- 12:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:42Speaker 5: I keep trying to remember.
- 12:43Speaker 1: I can't.
- 12:44Speaker 5: It doesn't seem real.
- 12:45Speaker 3: You been drinking, Gordon?
- 12:47Speaker 5: Yeah. Two or three days. We were going to have
- 12:51Speaker 5: dinner tonight. We started drinking cocktails before. Quite a few.
- 12:56Speaker 5: We never had dinner.
- 12:57Speaker 3: What do you mean by we?
- 12:58Speaker 5: The two of us. Elizabeth and I. Elizabeth Hoffman.
- 13:04Speaker 3: Where were you drinking?
- 13:06Speaker 5: I don't know. I'm telling you the truth. I keep
- 13:09Speaker 5: trying to remember.
- 13:10Speaker 3: No marks on the body, Gordon. None we could see anyway.
- 13:12Speaker 5: How'd you kill her? I killed her. That's enough, isn't it?
- 13:16Speaker 5: I murdered her. Please don't talk anymore.
- 13:20Speaker 3: I'm sorry, son. That's not even half the story. You
- 13:22Speaker 3: admit you killed a woman. You won't tell us why.
- 13:24Speaker 3: You won't tell us how.
- 13:26Speaker 5: They wouldn't let her alone. They kept hounding her. They
- 13:31Speaker 5: drove her out of her mind. Come on, son.
- 13:36Speaker 3: Snap out of it. That's not going to help any.
- 13:37Speaker 3: All right, come on.
- 13:40Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 13:40Speaker 3: Now, what's it all about? What'd you have to do
- 13:42Speaker 3: with it?
- 13:43Speaker 5: Known her for 10 years. She was my music teacher. Piano.
- 13:49Speaker 5: Brilliant woman. Elizabeth was a real artist.
- 13:53Speaker 3: You've been taking piano lessons from her for ten years,
- 13:55Speaker 3: is that right?
- 13:56Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 13:57Speaker 9: Elizabeth was arranging a concert tour for me. South America,
- 14:00Speaker 9: this fall. She said she was sure I'd be a success.
- 14:03Speaker 5: I couldn't fail.
- 14:04Speaker 9: Concerts in eight cities, all over South America. We were
- 14:08Speaker 9: going this fall. We were going to leave in August.
- 14:11Speaker 3: Not have anything to do with her death?
- 14:13Speaker 5: I guess so. No way.
- 14:16Speaker 9: She did everything for me, and I had to kill her.
- 14:19Speaker 9: Only one who believed in me. I can't tell you.
- 14:23Speaker 9: Last two years, I didn't have any money to pay
- 14:24Speaker 9: for my lessons.
- 14:25Speaker 5: She didn't care. She even fed me, took care of
- 14:28Speaker 5: me when I was sick once. She did everything for me.
- 14:32Speaker 3: You know, this is pretty hard to understand, son. She
- 14:34Speaker 3: did everything for you. Then why did you kill her?
- 14:37Speaker 9: What makes you think that's important? She's dead, and I
- 14:41Speaker 9: killed her. You always ask why. It's not important how
- 14:45Speaker 9: she died.
- 14:45Speaker 3: It is to us. Now, how'd you kill her, Gordon?
- 14:48Speaker 3: Why'd you take her body down to the freight yards?
- 14:49Speaker 9: You should have known Elizabeth when she was alive.
- 14:53Speaker 5: You never met a woman like her. Just wonderful. Talent.
- 14:57Speaker 5: She was brilliant. Understanding. Great woman.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Warm.
- 15:03Speaker 5: No one like her, Sergeant. Great human being.
- 15:05Speaker 3: She drank quite a bit, didn't she, Gordon?
- 15:07Speaker 5: Yes. She drank.
- 15:10Speaker 9: Reason for it, though. Reason for everything. Sat away with
- 15:14Speaker 9: a lot of brilliant people. She'd drink once in a while.
- 15:17Speaker 3: She drank more than that, didn't she?
- 15:18Speaker 5: She had a reason for it. Who are you to
- 15:21Speaker 5: sit in judgment on her?
- 15:22Speaker 9: Elizabeth was a brilliant artist, great woman, great. One of
- 15:26Speaker 9: the finest musicians in the country, a great woman.
- 15:28Speaker 3: She was a drunk and a bad drunk. Now, let's
- 15:30Speaker 3: face it, son, you know that as well as I do.
- 15:31Speaker 5: You're a liar. She wasn't.
- 15:32Speaker 1: You're a rotten liar.
- 15:33Speaker 3: Six drunk arrests in 14 months.
- 15:35Speaker 7: That's what her card reads in the record bureau. Those
- 15:37Speaker 7: are the only times we know of. Now, how many
- 15:39Speaker 7: can you add to it?
- 15:41Speaker 5: She drank. She thought it was the only way out
- 15:44Speaker 5: for her. Wasn't any other way.
- 15:46Speaker 3: Yeah, well, you're talking in circles here, Gordon. Get it
- 15:48Speaker 3: straightened out, will you?
- 15:50Speaker 5: You want to know why Elizabeth drank? Go ask my family.
- 15:53Speaker 5: They'll tell you. They'll tell you a lot of things
- 15:55Speaker 5: if you want.
- 15:55Speaker 3: To believe it. What can they tell me that you can't?
- 15:57Speaker 5: Nothing. But they'll try and pretend they know liars. I
- 16:00Speaker 5: don't want any part of them. And they don't want
- 16:02Speaker 5: any part of me.
- 16:03Speaker 3: Don't you live with your family now, Gordon?
- 16:05Speaker 5: I haven't seen them for a year. I don't want
- 16:06Speaker 5: to see them.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Why not? Don't you get along with them? Your father
- 16:09Speaker 3: and your mother?
- 16:10Speaker 5: My mother's dead. Died when I was 12. Just my
- 16:16Speaker 5: father and my sister.
- 16:17Speaker 3: What's the matter? Don't you get along with them?
- 16:19Speaker 5: I just want them to let me alone, that's all.
- 16:20Speaker 5: Just let me alone.
- 16:21Speaker 3: How about Elizabeth Hoffman? Your family know her pretty well?
- 16:24Speaker 5: Yeah, they know her. I didn't understand her, though. I
- 16:28Speaker 5: really loved her. She loved me.
- 16:30Speaker 3: I don't think I follow you, son.
- 16:32Speaker 9: I knew you wouldn't understand. I was in love with Elizabeth.
- 16:35Speaker 9: She was in love with me.
- 16:36Speaker 5: We were going to get married.
- 16:37Speaker 3: You're 25 years old, Gordon.
- 16:38Speaker 5: Is that right?
- 16:40Speaker 1: Yes.
- 16:40Speaker 3: Elizabeth Hoffman was 52. That's what our records show here.
- 16:44Speaker 5: What about it?
- 16:45Speaker 7: 27 years difference. That's a little unusual, wouldn't you say?
- 16:49Speaker 5: Whatever. Everything that's great is unusual. That's what makes it great.
- 16:54Speaker 5: I loved her. Time didn't make any difference. A few years,
- 16:56Speaker 5: what's that? I loved her more than any woman in
- 16:59Speaker 5: the world. She meant everything.
- 17:02Speaker 9: I didn't care if she drank. I didn't care if
- 17:04Speaker 9: she was old. You don't stop being beautiful just because
- 17:08Speaker 9: you grow old. Elizabeth was beautiful.
- 17:11Speaker 3: Well, drinking didn't help her much.
- 17:12Speaker 5: I don't care about that. I'll still say it. She
- 17:15Speaker 5: loved me and I loved her. Believe me, please, I
- 17:18Speaker 5: loved her.
- 17:20Speaker 3: All right, I believe you, son. Let me ask you this.
- 17:23Speaker 8: Yes.
- 17:24Speaker 3: You say you respected her. She was talented. You were
- 17:26Speaker 3: grateful to her. She was generous.
- 17:28Speaker 7: She made sacrifices for you, did everything for you that
- 17:30Speaker 7: she could.
- 17:31Speaker 3: Is that right? She loved you and you loved her.
- 17:33Speaker 3: You were going to marry her.
- 17:35Speaker 5: Yeah. This fall, on the way to South America. Going
- 17:38Speaker 5: to be married. What we always wanted. Elizabeth would have
- 17:44Speaker 5: been so happy. So happy.
- 17:46Speaker 3: Yeah, well, then why did you kill her?
- 17:47Speaker 2: Joe?
- 17:49Speaker 1: Yeah, Frank.
- 17:50Speaker 3: See you in a minute?
- 17:52Speaker 5: Yeah. Sorry to interrupt you. Something I think you ought
- 17:55Speaker 5: to know.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 17:57Speaker 5: John and I checked the boarding house the Hoffman woman
- 17:59Speaker 5: was staying at. Checked her room. It's clean. Everything in order. Uh-huh.
- 18:02Speaker 5: Miss Miller had the room next to her. Shook his
- 18:04Speaker 5: place down, too.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Anything?
- 18:05Speaker 5: His bags were all packed. Looked like he was ready
- 18:07Speaker 5: to go. Something else.
- 18:09Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:09Speaker 5: On the kitchen sink, bottle of poison.
- 18:22Speaker 6: You are listening to Dragnet. Authentic stories of your police
- 18:26Speaker 6: force in action.
- 18:27Speaker 5: Tuesday, January 18th, 1155 p.m.
- 18:28Speaker 8: My partner Frank Smith and I.
- 18:31Speaker 6: Continued questioning the murder suspect, 25-year-old Gordon Miller.
- 18:43Speaker 7: While he freely admitted to the murder of his music
- 18:46Speaker 7: teacher and fiancée, 52-year-old Elizabeth Hoffman, we still were unable
- 18:50Speaker 7: to get him to give us a good reason for
- 18:51Speaker 7: the murder. Whenever we put the question to him, he
- 18:54Speaker 7: either refused to answer or he was evasive. We got
- 18:57Speaker 7: the same results when we questioned him about how he
- 18:59Speaker 7: killed the Hoffman woman.
- 19:00Speaker 3: Where he killed her.
- 19:02Speaker 7: 12.20 a.m., the interrogation went on.
- 19:04Speaker 5: But you ought to remember where you killed her, Gordon.
- 19:05Speaker 5: You say the two of you left the rooming house,
- 19:07Speaker 5: you stopped for some drinks, and you went for a walk.
- 19:09Speaker 5: Where'd you walk? Down Arlington Avenue. We kept walking, then
- 19:11Speaker 5: we turned off. We walked for a long time.
- 19:13Speaker 3: Were you anywhere near the freight yards when you killed her?
- 19:15Speaker 3: Can you remember that?
- 19:16Speaker 5: No, I don't know. Like a nightmare.
- 19:17Speaker 7: There's so much of it, I guess I don't want
- 19:18Speaker 7: to remember. And what's the last location you can recall, Gordon?
- 19:21Speaker 7: I mean, before you found yourself.
- 19:22Speaker 3: In the freight yard.
- 19:23Speaker 5: Olympic Boulevard, I think. Someplace on Olympic. Kept walking and walking.
- 19:26Speaker 5: I don't even remember why. You remember packing your suitcases
- 19:29Speaker 5: before you left the boarding house? Packing? Yeah, I think
- 19:31Speaker 5: I do. Elizabeth and I talked about going away for
- 19:33Speaker 5: a few days, someplace out of town. I think we're
- 19:35Speaker 5: going to go tomorrow.
- 19:36Speaker 7: They checked both your rooms, Gordon, yours and Elizabeth Hoffman's.
- 19:38Speaker 7: They found your bags packed, but there was nothing about
- 19:40Speaker 7: her room that indicated she was going away. Everything was
- 19:42Speaker 7: in order.
- 19:43Speaker 3: Can you explain that?
- 19:44Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 19:44Speaker 9: Maybe she didn't have time, hadn't gotten around to it.
- 19:46Speaker 5: I guess you found the poison, too. That's right. I
- 19:49Speaker 5: got it two days ago. We thought about it. We
- 19:50Speaker 5: even wrote a letter explaining why we'd do it.
- 19:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 19:52Speaker 5: We didn't have the courage, though. Neither one of us.
- 19:55Speaker 5: Talked about it and decided to forget it. I've told
- 19:58Speaker 5: you everything. There isn't anything else to say.
- 19:59Speaker 8: Friday?
- 20:00Speaker 3: Yeah. Oh, all right, Jeff. Send her in, please. You're
- 20:05Speaker 3: Lillian Miller, is that right?
- 20:06Speaker 8: Yes, that's right.
- 20:07Speaker 5: I don't want to see her. I don't want to
- 20:08Speaker 5: see her. She's your sister, Gordon. She wants to see you. Please,
- 20:10Speaker 5: keep her out. Keep her away.
- 20:13Speaker 1: Gordon?
- 20:14Speaker 3: My name's Friday, Miss Miller. Come on in, please. Have
- 20:17Speaker 3: a chair, will you?
- 20:17Speaker 8: Thank you. How are you, Gordon? Been such a long time.
- 20:21Speaker 8: How have you been?
- 20:22Speaker 5: Chair, Miss Miller? Thanks.
- 20:25Speaker 8: Well, kid, what is it, Gordon? What's the trouble about? Honey,
- 20:29Speaker 8: what is it? Won't you even look at me?
- 20:31Speaker 5: Get out of here. Let me alone.
- 20:33Speaker 3: Get out.
- 20:33Speaker 8: Please, Gordon, don't. I'm here to help you, honey. They
- 20:36Speaker 8: called me tonight. They said you're in trouble. What is it?
- 20:38Speaker 8: Let me help you, please.
- 20:39Speaker 5: You can't help. She's dead now. Will you go home?
- 20:41Speaker 5: Elizabeth's dead. I killed her.
- 20:44Speaker 8: Merciful God, no.
- 20:45Speaker 5: Will you take her out of here, Sergeant? Tell her
- 20:47Speaker 5: to go?
- 20:48Speaker 8: You don't know what you're saying, honey. He's not in
- 20:50Speaker 8: his right mind, Sergeant. I know he isn't. Please, Gordon,
- 20:53Speaker 8: you have to let us help you. I called Dad
- 20:55Speaker 8: before I left. He's on his way here now. We'll
- 20:57Speaker 8: get you a lawyer. Don't worry, honey. It'll be all right.
- 21:00Speaker 8: Everything will be all right.
- 21:01Speaker 5: She's dead. Can you bring her back?
- 21:03Speaker 8: You couldn't have killed her, couldn't you?
- 21:05Speaker 5: Hounding her, torturing her. Why couldn't you let her alone?
- 21:07Speaker 5: Why couldn't you let us alone?
- 21:08Speaker 8: We only did it for you, Gordon. We thought it
- 21:10Speaker 8: was best for you.
- 21:11Speaker 5: You fool, you fool.
- 21:12Speaker 8: Say anything you want, Gordon. I don't care, but let
- 21:14Speaker 8: me help you, please. It doesn't count what I am.
- 21:16Speaker 8: Just let me help you.
- 21:18Speaker 5: I'll get it. Okay, then. Henry Miller, the boy's father.
- 21:23Speaker 5: I don't want to see him in here. I don't
- 21:25Speaker 5: know him. He's not my father.
- 21:26Speaker 3: All right, take it easy, Gordon.
- 21:27Speaker 8: Please, honey, try to understand. We only want to help.
- 21:29Speaker 5: Who's in charge here?
- 21:31Speaker 3: My name is Friday, Mr.
- 21:32Speaker 5: Miller.
- 21:32Speaker 3: This is my partner, Sergeant Smith.
- 21:33Speaker 5: The handcuffs on my son.
- 21:34Speaker 3: Gordon, who did it? Who put them on you? I did, Mr.
- 21:37Speaker 5: Miller.
- 21:37Speaker 3: The only way we could settle him down.
- 21:38Speaker 10: Taking quite a bit of authority in your hands, aren't you?
- 21:41Speaker 10: Get them off of him right now. No reason to
- 21:42Speaker 10: handcuff him.
- 21:43Speaker 5: Sorry, can't be done.
- 21:44Speaker 10: I said take them off. I have a little influence
- 21:46Speaker 10: in this town. I'll see to it that the police
- 21:48Speaker 10: commission hears about this. Now, what's my son doing here, anyway?
- 21:51Speaker 8: It's the Hoffman woman, Dad. Elizabeth Hoffman.
- 21:53Speaker 5: What about her?
- 21:54Speaker 8: She's dead. Gordon says he killed her. Dad, we've got
- 21:57Speaker 8: to do something.
- 21:57Speaker 10: Don't tell him anything, Gordon. Don't say a thing. I'll
- 22:00Speaker 10: get a lawyer for you right away. I know what
- 22:01Speaker 10: your rights are. Don't tell him anything.
- 22:03Speaker 3: Did you know Elizabeth Hoffman, Mr. Miller? I knew her slightly.
- 22:06Speaker 10: Can't see what this fuss is all about anyway.
- 22:08Speaker 5: Woman wasn't any good to begin with. No good at all.
- 22:10Speaker 5: You ought to be glad I'm handcuffed to this chair.
- 22:12Speaker 5: I never thought of hitting you before. I'd like to
- 22:14Speaker 5: do it now.
- 22:15Speaker 8: Please, Gordon, don't say those things.
- 22:16Speaker 10: As far as I can remember, you've been nothing but trouble. Now,
- 22:19Speaker 10: either you snap out of it this time or you're
- 22:20Speaker 10: on your own.
- 22:21Speaker 3: I'm sick of this.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Police stations, trampy women keeping you out of jail.
- 22:24Speaker 10: Either you start to realize who's boss in this family
- 22:26Speaker 10: or there's going to be real trouble. Find yourself out
- 22:29Speaker 10: in the cold, you'll stay there.
- 22:30Speaker 5: Get him out of here. Get him out of my sight.
- 22:32Speaker 8: Please, Dad, he's not well. Try and understand.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Enough, Gordon. I'll send a lawyer for you. That's all
- 22:36Speaker 5: I'll do.
- 22:37Speaker 10: If you make up your mind I'm boss, you can
- 22:38Speaker 10: come home. If not, you can stay away. Figure it
- 22:40Speaker 10: out for yourself.
- 22:41Speaker 5: I don't care. I hate you. I hope you never
- 22:43Speaker 5: forget it. I hate you.
- 22:44Speaker 1: Dad.
- 22:45Speaker 5: I'll see you at home, Lillian. It's a maid's night out.
- 22:48Speaker 5: Lock the door before you go to bed.
- 22:50Speaker 8: Please, Dad, we've got to help. Don't leave, Dad. It's God,
- 22:56Speaker 8: dear God.
- 22:58Speaker 5: Sergeant.
- 22:59Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 22:59Speaker 5: Will you lock me up now? I'm tired.
- 23:01Speaker 3: All right, Gordon. Just a minute. Frank, you want to
- 23:03Speaker 3: stay with him? Yeah, okay. Miss Miller, would you like
- 23:06Speaker 3: to step outside for a minute or something? I'd like
- 23:08Speaker 3: to ask you.
- 23:08Speaker 8: Yes, all right. You'll let me see Gordon again?
- 23:11Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am. Come on this way.
- 23:18Speaker 8: Now, look.
- 23:19Speaker 3: How about this Elizabeth Hoffman, Miss Miller? Did you know
- 23:21Speaker 3: her at all?
- 23:22Speaker 8: I tried to talk to her. I even offered her
- 23:24Speaker 8: money if she'd let Gordon alone. It wasn't any use.
- 23:26Speaker 8: She'd been drinking. She wouldn't even listen. She kept saying
- 23:29Speaker 8: she was going to marry Gordon.
- 23:30Speaker 3: Well, what's the big attraction, do you know? I mean,
- 23:31Speaker 3: between your brother and that woman.
- 23:33Speaker 8: There's only one thing Gordon ever really wanted. He wasn't
- 23:36Speaker 8: too interested in women, things like that. All he wanted
- 23:39Speaker 8: was to be a musician, a great pianist. That's all
- 23:41Speaker 8: he ever wanted. The sad part about it is he'll
- 23:43Speaker 8: never make it. I think Don D.P. knows that. When
- 23:47Speaker 8: he was a kid, Dad sent him to the finest teachers.
- 23:49Speaker 8: After six months, they all said the same thing.
- 23:51Speaker 3: Yes, ma'am.
- 23:52Speaker 8: He'd never make it. Oh, he could play well enough,
- 23:54Speaker 8: but he certainly wasn't exceptional. He never improved. He just
- 23:58Speaker 8: stayed the same. When he started taking lessons from Elizabeth,
- 24:01Speaker 8: she convinced him he had a great talent, kept telling
- 24:03Speaker 8: him she'd make a great pianist out of him. The
- 24:05Speaker 8: last three years, she kept promising to take him on
- 24:07Speaker 8: a tour, Europe, South America. It never happened. I think
- 24:12Speaker 8: Gordon knew it never could happen.
- 24:13Speaker 1: I see.
- 24:14Speaker 3: Can you think of any reason at all why he'd
- 24:15Speaker 3: want to kill her?
- 24:16Speaker 8: There isn't any reason, none at all. Gordon didn't kill her.
- 24:18Speaker 8: He couldn't kill anyone, I'm sure of it.
- 24:20Speaker 3: I hope you're right, Miss Miller, for your brother's sake.
- 24:23Speaker 3: Would you excuse me for a few minutes, please?
- 24:25Speaker 8: Yes, all right.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You wait here.
- 24:26Speaker 3: You sit down if you want to. I'll be right back.
- 24:28Speaker 1: All right.
- 24:32Speaker 5: All set, Joe?
- 24:33Speaker 3: Yeah, in a minute.
- 24:35Speaker 5: Gordon, you ready to go?
- 24:36Speaker 3: I'd like to ask you one more question, son. I'd
- 24:38Speaker 3: like to have you tell me the truth on this one.
- 24:40Speaker 5: Yeah?
- 24:41Speaker 3: What did you have in common with Elizabeth Hoffman? She
- 24:43Speaker 3: was twice as old as you are. You gave up
- 24:45Speaker 3: a lot for her. She didn't have any money.
- 24:46Speaker 5: She was an alcoholic.
- 24:47Speaker 3: What was the big attraction?
- 24:49Speaker 5: Why did I love Elizabeth? Is that what you mean?
- 24:51Speaker 3: Yeah, that's right.
- 24:52Speaker 5: You tell me, Sergeant. Why do you love any woman? Why?
- 24:54Speaker 5: Because you need them.
- 24:56Speaker 1: You need them.
- 24:57Speaker 5: You can't be alone. Nobody can be alone. I needed Elizabeth.
- 25:00Speaker 5: That's why I loved her. There's only been two women
- 25:02Speaker 5: in the world who understood me. One of them was Elizabeth.
- 25:05Speaker 5: The other one was my mother. She died when I
- 25:08Speaker 5: was 12. Now they're both dead. Both of them. Only
- 25:11Speaker 5: ones who understood. My father didn't understand. He never did.
- 25:15Speaker 5: All he knows is business, making money, more money. That's
- 25:18Speaker 5: why he hated Elizabeth. He was jealous.
- 25:19Speaker 9: She understood me. She knew what I was like, knew
- 25:22Speaker 9: all about me. When I was with Elizabeth, I was safe.
- 25:24Speaker 9: I was happy close to her. There wasn't anything.
- 25:26Speaker 5: To be afraid of.
- 25:28Speaker 9: I'd go to her just like my mother. I'd put
- 25:29Speaker 9: my head on her shoulder and she'd put her arms
- 25:31Speaker 9: around me. I wasn't frightened anymore. I was safe.
- 25:34Speaker 5: Everything was all right, just like when I was a
- 25:36Speaker 5: little kid in the night. I'd call out for my mother.
- 25:38Speaker 5: She was always there. She'd put her arms around me
- 25:41Speaker 5: and everything was safe. I wasn't afraid. I needed her.
- 25:44Speaker 5: It was the same way I needed Elizabeth. Do you
- 25:46Speaker 5: understand now? Now, do you know why I loved her? Yeah,
- 25:50Speaker 5: I think I do. Only one question left. Why did
- 25:53Speaker 5: you kill her? I don't know. I really don't. Maybe
- 25:55Speaker 5: I'll remember. Look, Gordon, are you sure you killed her?
- 25:59Speaker 5: If she died in my arms, I must have killed her. Tomorrow, maybe.
- 26:03Speaker 5: Maybe I'll remember tomorrow. Is Lillian still here, my sister?
- 26:06Speaker 5: She's waiting outside. Did you hear my father, what he said?
- 26:10Speaker 5: Told her to be sure and lock the door?
- 26:12Speaker 3: Mm-hmm.
- 26:13Speaker 5: Just like my father. They don't have to lock that door.
- 26:17Speaker 5: It was locked 13 years ago.
- 26:18Speaker 3: How do you mean?
- 26:19Speaker 5: It was locked the day my mother died.
- 26:28Speaker 4: The story you have just heard was true. The names
- 26:31Speaker 4: were changed to protect the innocent.
- 26:34Speaker 6: On January 19th, an autopsy was performed at the county morgue,
- 26:37Speaker 6: city and county of Los Angeles, state of California. In
- 26:40Speaker 6: a moment, the results of that examination. The results of
- 26:51Speaker 6: the autopsy performed on the body of Elizabeth Hoffman showed
- 26:54Speaker 6: definitely that she had suffered from a chronic heart condition
- 26:57Speaker 6: aggravated by excessive drinking. Cause of death was listed as myocarditis,
- 27:01Speaker 6: inflammation of the heart muscle. Gordon Miller was released from
- 27:04Speaker 6: custody and completely exonerated of the death of Elizabeth Hoffman.
- 27:08Speaker 6: Eighteen months later, he took his own life.
- 27:20Speaker 4: You have just heard Dragnet, a series of authentic cases
- 27:23Speaker 4: from official files. Technical advice comes from the office of
- 27:27Speaker 4: Chief of Police W.H. Parker, Los Angeles Police Department. Technical advisors,
- 27:32Speaker 4: Captain Jack Donahoe, Sergeant Marty Wynn, Sergeant Vance Brasher. Heard
- 27:36Speaker 4: tonight were Vic Perrin, Herb Ellis, Harry Bartell, Joyce McCluskey.
- 27:40Speaker 4: Script by Jim Moser. Music by Walter Schumann. George Fenneman speaking.
- 27:53Speaker 5: Attend the Republican Convention on NBC.
- 28:05Speaker 2: Welcome back. Well, this is such an interesting episode. and
- 28:10Speaker 2: really does show the strength of Dragnet in its portrayal
- 28:15Speaker 2: of human drama. And it's a very dark story in
- 28:18Speaker 2: a way, even though it doesn't involve an actual crime.
- 28:23Speaker 2: As Gordon Miller is just this tragic figure whose real
- 28:31Speaker 2: emotional development really seemed to have stopped when... his mother died.
- 28:39Speaker 2: And there's this way where most people in this episode
- 28:45Speaker 2: don't even really treat him like an adult. The way
- 28:50Speaker 2: his father spoke to him in terms of how he
- 28:54Speaker 2: was bossing him around. Maybe you can think that had
- 28:59Speaker 2: to do with his dad being domineering. Then you have
- 29:04Speaker 2: his sister. you know, calling him a poor kid and, honey,
- 29:09Speaker 2: you know, it's just not a way that I've heard
- 29:15Speaker 2: adult women talk to their 25-year-old brother. And even Friday,
- 29:22Speaker 2: you know, I think the way that he was talking
- 29:26Speaker 2: to him at the beginning seemed more reminiscent sometimes of
- 29:30Speaker 2: the way Joe Friday might work with a young teenager.
- 29:36Speaker 2: And Friday says, I'm sick of treating you like a baby. Now,
- 29:40Speaker 2: any of these might just be like a one-off thing.
- 29:44Speaker 2: But I think when you have this many people doing
- 29:48Speaker 2: this sort of thing, it says something about the character.
- 29:52Speaker 2: And there was so much that he had invested in
- 29:55Speaker 2: this relationship with this older woman. that she was, in effect,
- 30:00Speaker 2: his whole world. And in a way, he was also
- 30:04Speaker 2: losing his own mother again. And it shows from a
- 30:07Speaker 2: police perspective that oftentimes you intersect with these painful situations
- 30:14Speaker 2: and there's not really a whole lot you can do.
- 30:17Speaker 2: Your part in a case like this is to find
- 30:20Speaker 2: out whether there was a murder or some sort of
- 30:23Speaker 2: actionable criminal offense. But that doesn't end up saying a
- 30:27Speaker 2: whole lot in terms of the ongoing underlying problem. Well,
- 30:31Speaker 2: now it's time to thank our Patreon supporter of the day.

- 31:02Speaker 2: another episode of Dragnet, but join us back here tomorrow
- 31:06Speaker 2: for yours truly, Johnny Dollar, where.
- 31:08Speaker 1: Right on the ball. Kind of had a hunch you
- 31:10Speaker 1: might be dragged in on this. How are you, Johnny? Well,
- 31:12Speaker 1: pretty good, Louie. Or rather, I'm not so sure. You
- 31:16Speaker 1: have any real leads on this case, Johnny? Yeah. Let
- 31:19Speaker 1: me hand you a thought for the day. Okay, sure.
- 31:21Speaker 1: Don't be surprised when you find that Lena Loomis isn't
- 31:24Speaker 1: at all broken up over this loss of her husband,
- 31:26Speaker 1: because she isn't. If you ask me, she's downright tickled
- 31:29Speaker 1: to death about it. Is that your snide way of
- 31:32Speaker 1: telling me that she's interested in somebody else? Somebody closer
- 31:35Speaker 1: to her own age? Johnny, if I could find out
- 31:38Speaker 1: who that somebody else is. But who knows? Maybe there
- 31:41Speaker 1: isn't any. Or maybe there's a dozen of them. I
- 31:43Speaker 1: don't know. This gal is the social type. One big
- 31:47Speaker 1: party after another, night after night, month after month, ever
- 31:50Speaker 1: since they got married. Lewis? Couldn't stay far enough away
- 31:54Speaker 1: from it all. Spent most of his time off on
- 31:57Speaker 1: hunting or fishing trips or out on his yacht. Funny
- 32:01Speaker 1: that he ever married her in the first place. Well,
- 32:04Speaker 1: when a gorgeous young charmer starts going at a poor,
- 32:07Speaker 1: lonely widower, nearly 60, well, what do you expect? Apparently
- 32:11Speaker 1: all she cared about was getting her hooks on his money.
- 32:14Speaker 1: What else? When did he go? Ten days ago. Got up,
- 32:18Speaker 1: had breakfast, announced he was going to spend the day
- 32:21Speaker 1: in Philadelphia. Walked out the front door, and that was
- 32:23Speaker 1: the last anybody ever saw. And what about enemies, Lou?
- 32:27Speaker 1: Not a one that anybody knows of. I mean, anything,
- 32:29Speaker 1: any reason to think he might have been hauled up
- 32:31Speaker 1: and murdered? The only reason to think he wasn't is
- 32:34Speaker 1: the fact he took some luggage, some clothing with him.
- 32:37Speaker 5: Well, that doesn't prove anything.
- 32:39Speaker 1: You've questioned his wife, of course.
- 32:40Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 32:41Speaker 1: When you get through talking to her, you'll know just
- 32:43Speaker 1: as much or as little as I do. Well, how
- 32:45Speaker 1: about his favorite hunting and fishing spots? Check them all.
- 32:48Speaker 1: Favorite and otherwise, nothing. You say that he owns a yacht? Owned.
- 32:53Speaker 5: Huh?
- 32:54Speaker 1: A sailboat, a big one. Kept it down in the
- 32:57Speaker 1: little town of Tuckahoe on the Tuckahoe River.
- 33:00Speaker 3: So?
- 33:01Speaker 1: He just happened to have sold that yacht two days
- 33:03Speaker 1: before he disappeared.
- 33:04Speaker 5: Ah.
- 33:06Speaker 1: Johnny... We haven't a single solitary thing to go on.
- 33:12Speaker 1: You sure about that, Lou? What do you mean? Not
- 33:16Speaker 1: even his.
- 33:17Speaker 2: I hope you'll be with us then. In the meantime,
