- 0:08Speaker 1: Welcome to The Favorites, the podcast part of the Action
- 0:13Speaker 1: Network and proudly presented by Bett three sixty five. I
- 0:18Speaker 1: am Chad Moman, Chief Content Officer of the Action Network.
- 0:24Speaker 1: We've got a massive NFL show today with one of
- 0:29Speaker 1: the biggest NFL podcasters in the business. I'm not officially
- 0:36Speaker 1: introducing him yet. That's what's known in the entertainment biz
- 0:41Speaker 1: as a tease. I am joined as I am in
- 0:44Speaker 1: every episode by my bff, my companion, my compadre, professional
- 0:48Speaker 1: better mister Simon Hunter.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Hello, So I'm in hellot Chad. How you doing, brother?
- 0:58Speaker 1: You are as everyone knows. You're in Hawaii for god
- 1:04Speaker 1: knows how long. I can't even keep up with it.
- 1:06Speaker 1: But you're wearing a little Hawaiian shirt today.
- 1:10Speaker 2: Yeah, because someone sent me a nice Eagles Hawaiian shirts.
- 1:13Speaker 2: I thought I'd busted out for the NFC show. Definitely
- 1:17Speaker 2: missing home, so anything I get from back home I
- 1:19Speaker 2: try to either wear or just you know, incorporating into
- 1:22Speaker 2: my life. So that going for the Sixers as well. Chad.
- 1:25Speaker 2: I was either not going to show up today or
- 1:27Speaker 2: be a static today. And luckily I'm here today because
- 1:30Speaker 2: the Sixers finally, finally, beat Boston at home in the playoffs.
- 1:35Speaker 2: I know it doesn't sound crazy to people, but Dolanbiad
- 1:38Speaker 2: is one in ten straight up headed into last night
- 1:40Speaker 2: in the playoffs against the Celtics. So not saying I
- 1:44Speaker 2: gave up Chad, but I gave up when they came
- 1:46Speaker 2: back in that game, I gave up. I'm one of
- 1:48Speaker 2: those Sixers fans. I'm kind of burned out, but there's
- 1:51Speaker 2: new hope. All we need is James Runner score forty
- 1:53Speaker 2: points and we can win every game.
- 1:55Speaker 1: As you know, Joel Embiid had a great line. The
- 1:59Speaker 1: Celtics Sixers isn't a rivalry because they always beat us.
- 2:04Speaker 1: But as you know, as you know, I'm old and
- 2:08Speaker 1: in the late seventies early eighties, when I was just
- 2:12Speaker 1: a lad, I in addition to being a Bulls fan,
- 2:17Speaker 1: I was a massive, massive Doctor J fan. And of
- 2:20Speaker 1: course my nickname growing up outside Chicago was doctor C.
- 2:23Speaker 1: And I could I could give you the starting lineup
- 2:26Speaker 1: for the Philadelphia Philadelphia seventy six ers from nineteen eighty three.
- 2:29Speaker 1: I could probably go ten deep on their roster. I
- 2:32Speaker 1: would play basketball in my driveway and pretend I was
- 2:36Speaker 1: legendary spectrum Pa announcer Dave Zincoff, and I'd announce the
- 2:41Speaker 1: whole team with myself on it while I was playing
- 2:43Speaker 1: in the driveway. And in those early eighties years, the Sixers,
- 2:48Speaker 1: until they got Mosim Malone, could not get by the Celtics,
- 2:52Speaker 1: and it would give me stomach aches watching them try
- 2:56Speaker 1: to beat the Celtics. So I empathize with you, man.
- 3:00Speaker 2: Chad, that's your show. So you're a true American and
- 3:01Speaker 2: most American team and all of the American sports literally
- 3:04Speaker 2: named after our independence, our Freedom Day. The seventy six Ers, Chad,
- 3:08Speaker 2: weren't our American colors. I love that you're a fan.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And I just want to say one more thing. The
- 3:11Speaker 2: Boston fans. All these Boston fans talking shit. When was
- 3:14Speaker 2: to the Boston's last MVP in basketball chat? Do you
- 3:17Speaker 2: know when? Uh?
- 3:20Speaker 1: Probably Larry Bird.
- 3:21Speaker 3: Yeah, So shut the fuck up.
- 3:23Speaker 2: All right, Hopefully we get a championship this year. But
- 3:25Speaker 2: I cannot take these Boston fans like Sanka Gratz and
- 3:28Speaker 2: your MVP. It's fun. This was a fun year watching
- 3:31Speaker 2: Joel embiid. Let us enjoy something.
- 3:32Speaker 1: Please, Boston fans, I did love I like I love
- 3:36Speaker 1: Philly fans so much. And I did love watching the
- 3:40Speaker 1: crowd shots at the end of the game yesterday when
- 3:44Speaker 1: it looked like they were just going to be in agony,
- 3:47Speaker 1: and then they were just euphoric and you could see
- 3:51Speaker 1: them cheering before the refs officially called Marcus Sparts shot
- 3:57Speaker 1: as being too late. You could see them jump and
- 4:00Speaker 1: they were going nuts. It was it was great, It
- 4:02Speaker 1: was totally great. We're gonna get to the football stuff
- 4:07Speaker 1: in one second with our very special guest. As a reminder,

- 5:45Speaker 1: It's always more fun when you're interacting. Matt Mitchell will
- 5:48Speaker 1: send me the questions. I promised NFL. I promised big
- 5:53Speaker 1: time NFL podcaster NFL expert Nate Tice ah. You can
- 6:01Speaker 1: hear him on the very popular podcast The Athletic Football Show.
- 6:08Speaker 1: Nate Welcome, thanks for having me.
- 6:12Speaker 4: You first teased me as the biggest podcaster, which I
- 6:16Speaker 4: thought was very literal because I am six five, So
- 6:19Speaker 4: I thought that was like, hey, that he is not lying.
- 6:21Speaker 3: That is what it says on the ten is just
- 6:24Speaker 3: the biggest NFL podcaster. So let's just keep it right there.
- 6:27Speaker 4: We don't have to look at talk about numbers or
- 6:28Speaker 4: viewership or anything like that.
- 6:29Speaker 3: What's that's what I mean, height and weight right there,
- 6:32Speaker 3: I'm exact.
- 6:32Speaker 1: Literally the biggest, the big podcaster.
- 6:35Speaker 3: Yeah, exactly.
- 6:36Speaker 2: I like that.
- 6:38Speaker 4: But hearing you know, people they're a fan of Chicago,
- 6:42Speaker 4: Boston and Philly sports. As a person that's cheered for
- 6:45Speaker 4: a team from Seattle, in Minneapolis and Jacksonville my entire life,
- 6:50Speaker 4: it's really funny to hear.
- 6:52Speaker 3: Like the big city people like just go like they.
- 6:54Speaker 4: Talk about their teams like they're the scrappy underdogs and
- 6:57Speaker 4: like the there's only one hundred thousand fans I cheer
- 6:59Speaker 4: for this team ever, and it's like, meanwhile, you look
- 7:02Speaker 4: at the markets also coming in right here. Simon, by
- 7:05Speaker 4: the way, is that I was a little low on
- 7:08Speaker 4: not low. I thought the Eagles would a playoff team
- 7:10Speaker 4: this year, but like I took me about week seven
- 7:12Speaker 4: till I fully come around on them this year, and
- 7:14Speaker 4: i'd Eagles fans coming after me. They're just like no one,
- 7:17Speaker 4: you know, nobody believes in us. Nobody talks about the Eagles.
- 7:20Speaker 4: It's like you guys are like the fourth biggest media market.
- 7:22Speaker 3: What are you guys talking to? What are you talking about?
- 7:24Speaker 4: You're not the scrappy underdog like you think you are. Sorry,
- 7:27Speaker 4: Invincible is not every year for you, guys, But no, sorry,
- 7:30Speaker 4: but thanks for having me.
- 7:31Speaker 2: Log rant to.
- 7:32Speaker 4: Say, big, big, big, big, big podcaster literally right here,
- 7:36Speaker 4: but also very happy to be here on the show.
- 7:39Speaker 1: So let me ask you a question. I have a theory, okay,
- 7:42Speaker 1: and I talk about on this show all the time.
- 7:44Speaker 1: Simon doesn't disagree with me, but he knows it invites
- 7:52Speaker 1: listener ire, so he doesn't outwardly agree with me. Okay,
- 7:56Speaker 1: But as someone who you know your father, as you've mentioned,
- 8:01Speaker 1: you mentioned Seattle, you mentioned Minnesota, you mentioned Jacksonville, happen
- 8:04Speaker 1: to be places where your father was a coach, and
- 8:09Speaker 1: so I have a theory about NFL coach. I have
- 8:14Speaker 1: a theory about Jacksonville and Carolina and to a certain extent,
- 8:23Speaker 1: Tennessee Indie. Like the teams that are in the NFC
- 8:28Speaker 1: and AFC South, they've got regional fan bases, will never
- 8:34Speaker 1: have national fan bases. No one will ever care about
- 8:37Speaker 1: them the way they care about other teams that have
- 8:41Speaker 1: developed more of a history over the years. I feel
- 8:44Speaker 1: like their nicknames are nondescript other than the Colts and
- 8:47Speaker 1: the Saints, like the logos are nondescript, like they're just
- 8:51Speaker 1: not memorable. As someone who is connected to the Jacksonville franchise,
- 8:57Speaker 1: tell me your thoughts on that.
- 8:59Speaker 4: I agree to an extent because they are they those
- 9:02Speaker 4: teams like the Jaguars and the Panthers especially, they have
- 9:04Speaker 4: the Curse of the nineties. So it's you know, exactly
- 9:08Speaker 4: when those teams are founded just by their colors, like
- 9:11Speaker 4: you know exactly, like that was the nineteen ninety four
- 9:13Speaker 4: ninety five TiAl going on there. But I also think
- 9:16Speaker 4: it's those original where are now NFC East teams. They
- 9:20Speaker 4: you know, they run as many teams back then and
- 9:22Speaker 4: so they had a more more big fan base.
- 9:26Speaker 3: And also people.
- 9:27Speaker 4: Love winners, and if you look at obviously you guys do,
- 9:31Speaker 4: not just in a betting sense, but just people. People
- 9:33Speaker 4: will hop on bandwagons over the years. And I think
- 9:35Speaker 4: that all those older teams, as you guys know too,
- 9:38Speaker 4: is that those older teams, they were winning a lot
- 9:40Speaker 4: of games. When they break down, who have the biggest
- 9:42Speaker 4: kind of media falling or fan falling. It's all the
- 9:46Speaker 4: big cities that you expect, the Giants, you know, Washington,
- 9:50Speaker 4: the Cowboys, and then there was the teams that were
- 9:52Speaker 4: good for the Steelers, the Packers, like there's no reason
- 9:56Speaker 4: green Bay should have a national falling. But people love
- 9:59Speaker 4: that band wagon that's sixties. Those sixties teams were really
- 10:02Speaker 4: really good. So it's easy to cheer for a winner.
- 10:04Speaker 4: So I think there's that's that double whammy is that
- 10:07Speaker 4: you're not of those big big markets like Carolina and Charlotte,
- 10:10Speaker 4: you know, or Jacksonville, Lataday, Ax.
- 10:12Speaker 2: And Indy a little bit.
- 10:14Speaker 4: But it's also it's not their team. That's a big
- 10:16Speaker 4: thing too. It's happening here in Vegas right now with
- 10:18Speaker 4: the Raiders. Is Raiders, yes, have a lot of fans nationally,
- 10:22Speaker 4: but local Vegas fans are kind of like, well, it's
- 10:25Speaker 4: not really our team, you know, that was LA's and
- 10:28Speaker 4: Oakland's and you know Bay Area that's not US but
- 10:30Speaker 4: the Vegas gold Knights.
- 10:31Speaker 3: Oh.
- 10:32Speaker 4: But one of why the biggest gold Knights have a
- 10:34Speaker 4: ton of fans because they won, they.
- 10:36Speaker 3: Win, they win.
- 10:37Speaker 4: Everybody loves a winner. So it's at that combination of
- 10:40Speaker 4: big city early big city teams which are usually in
- 10:42Speaker 4: the Northeast and some of the Midwest, but then also
- 10:45Speaker 4: who was winning early on, and then those parents had
- 10:47Speaker 4: kids and then kids. Well I grew up in Arizona,
- 10:51Speaker 4: but my dad was from Milwaukee, so I'm a huge
- 10:54Speaker 4: Packers fan. So it's like it's easy to cheer for
- 10:56Speaker 4: winners rather than pile on to the Cardinals. So long
- 10:59Speaker 4: story short, I think there is it is tough to
- 11:01Speaker 4: build that franchise and build that fan base. It's more
- 11:04Speaker 4: of like a decade generational thing because now we're seeing
- 11:07Speaker 4: more Jaguars fans come up because now it's been around
- 11:10Speaker 4: for almost thirty years and so now they can recall
- 11:12Speaker 4: some of those guys Tony Boselli, you know, most some
- 11:15Speaker 4: of those players that played for that franchise earlier. So
- 11:17Speaker 4: it's kind of you need time, but winning can really
- 11:20Speaker 4: can really amp it up a little bit, make a well,
- 11:23Speaker 4: put some nitro into that fan base.
- 11:25Speaker 1: I haven't heard anything you've said since you said I
- 11:27Speaker 1: was right.
- 11:30Speaker 3: Hey, that's exactly what my wife says too. Yeah, that's a.
- 11:35Speaker 1: Simon. I know you agree with me. You just don't
- 11:37Speaker 1: want to say it. You're afraid that you're afraid of people.
- 11:39Speaker 1: Like everyone knows, you don't like to go after people.
- 11:41Speaker 1: You don't like to get criticism on the Twitter, and
- 11:44Speaker 1: so this keeps you from getting the criticism on the Twitter.
- 11:47Speaker 2: I will say this, once they become the London Jaguars,
- 11:50Speaker 2: they will be the biggest team in the world chats,
- 11:52Speaker 2: so you will just literally and just wait.
- 11:55Speaker 4: I'll tell you what some of those I get about
- 11:58Speaker 4: the Twitter wrath. Though, there's certain fan bases, usually russ
- 12:01Speaker 4: Belt oriented fan bases that if you say.
- 12:05Speaker 3: Any of they get that, they get mad quick.
- 12:09Speaker 4: Buffalo Buffalo fans are kind of cool with me. Bill's
- 12:12Speaker 4: fans because I was early on going like, hey, Josh
- 12:14Speaker 4: Allen's turning it around, so they I kind of got
- 12:16Speaker 4: a card with them. But then like other fan base
- 12:19Speaker 4: and then Bengals fan base. Fan base has been the
- 12:21Speaker 4: funniest for me. Because they hated me a couple of
- 12:23Speaker 4: years ago because I was like, they're getting lucky, they.
- 12:25Speaker 3: Shouldn't make a run, and then they make a run
- 12:27Speaker 3: to the super Bowl, so it's like, you know, put
- 12:28Speaker 3: a bowl in my brain.
- 12:30Speaker 4: But then that last year, I was like, man, the
- 12:32Speaker 4: Bengals are really turning it around.
- 12:34Speaker 3: They really come around. So Bengals fans are all about.
- 12:35Speaker 4: They hopped on our podcasts like Bandwagon, very quickly as
- 12:39Speaker 4: soon as we're positive about them. But if they're in
- 12:41Speaker 4: the Ross Belt, you know that weather turns south and
- 12:43Speaker 4: you're criticizing their team, they'll hop on Twitter and yell
- 12:46Speaker 4: at you for weeks on end.
- 12:49Speaker 1: All right, well, listen, we're gonna talk about NFC teams.
- 12:53Speaker 1: And I know that producer Matt Mitchell gave us a
- 12:56Speaker 1: very specific outline about how we should do this and
- 13:01Speaker 1: what we should be doing. And I think it's hard
- 13:07Speaker 1: to transition from nondescript teams in metro areas that are
- 13:12Speaker 1: transient that also had the number one overall pick in
- 13:18Speaker 1: the NFC in the NFL Draft and then drafted a
- 13:22Speaker 1: pee wee size quarterback. Did you have an opinion on
- 13:26Speaker 1: Bryce Young? I mean, you're a guy who was much
- 13:29Speaker 1: more qualified than me, probably is equally qualified as Simon
- 13:33Speaker 1: to analyze the quarterback class and give us your take
- 13:37Speaker 1: on if this was the right call for the Carolina Panthers.
- 13:42Speaker 4: I think it's scary to draft a true historical outlier.
- 13:47Speaker 4: That there's a last quarterback under two underd pounds to
- 13:50Speaker 4: be drafted in the first round was Jim McMahon in
- 13:53Speaker 4: nineteen eighty two, So this is no way. Yeah, the
- 13:57Speaker 4: last one to go in the first round. The last
- 13:59Speaker 4: one to go the first three round was Pat White
- 14:00Speaker 4: in two thousand and nine, and so you got you're
- 14:04Speaker 4: depending on a historical outlier. I appreciate the mental side
- 14:06Speaker 4: of Bryce Young, like he does do a lot of
- 14:08Speaker 4: the quarterback things well, but it's not only just his
- 14:10Speaker 4: size and his weight. It's the lack of kind of
- 14:15Speaker 4: overwhelming arm strength or arm talent, and also athletic ability,
- 14:18Speaker 4: Like he is a good mover and a good athlete,
- 14:20Speaker 4: but he's one hundred ninety pounds, So it's kind of
- 14:22Speaker 4: one of those things where it's like he better be
- 14:23Speaker 4: he better be a good athlete, but he's not a
- 14:26Speaker 4: rare athlete, you know, a lamar, a lamar or a
- 14:29Speaker 4: Mike Vick or any of those guys that are true,
- 14:31Speaker 4: true plus plus plus athletes. And on top of it,
- 14:34Speaker 4: Kyler and Russell Wilson, the guys that he's getting compared
- 14:37Speaker 4: to the shorter quarterbacks. Those guys were drafted to be
- 14:39Speaker 4: baseball players. They have true plus arm talent, and I
- 14:43Speaker 4: don't think Bryce Young has that. And I do appreciate
- 14:46Speaker 4: a lot of his game, but it's I wouldn't be
- 14:48Speaker 4: bent on him as the number one pick, So I
- 14:50Speaker 4: am a little scared. Even if I do like his game,
- 14:52Speaker 4: I do like him as a player, but I actually
- 14:55Speaker 4: do like how the Panthers are set up, if we
- 14:56Speaker 4: do want to talk about that, but I'll talk about
- 14:58Speaker 4: that sect.
- 14:58Speaker 3: But Bryce Young was a little little for me.
- 15:00Speaker 4: I ended up having him as my quarterback three in
- 15:02Speaker 4: this class just because the size and lack of overwhelming
- 15:05Speaker 4: arm talent.
- 15:06Speaker 3: Those are my concerns with him.
- 15:08Speaker 1: All right, So Simon, I'm gonna ask you this first.
- 15:13Speaker 1: Sure I actually haven't asked you this yet in any
- 15:16Speaker 1: of sort of our podcasts. If we look at the
- 15:19Speaker 1: whole big picture for the NFC right now, what single
- 15:23Speaker 1: team do you think has helped themselves the most this offseason.
- 15:27Speaker 1: I got an opinion, but I want.
- 15:29Speaker 2: To hear you. I mean, if we're saying just compared
- 15:31Speaker 2: to what they were the last year, it's gonna be
- 15:34Speaker 2: the Bears. I think they have the biggest win total
- 15:36Speaker 2: jump up from last year. And it's just a team
- 15:38Speaker 2: that it was all there, Chad. We already talked about
- 15:41Speaker 2: they just had the money, They have the quarterback. They
- 15:43Speaker 2: just need to surround that quarterback with the pieces and
- 15:45Speaker 2: build an offense around it. So the Justin Fields thing, forever,
- 15:49Speaker 2: we'll talk about Atlanta passing on him, Carolina passing it.
- 15:52Speaker 2: Just these teams that pass them will never make sense.
- 15:54Speaker 2: Now he's you know, Field is in an amazing situation
- 15:57Speaker 2: with this Bears team where you have two years now right,
- 16:00Speaker 2: you have exactly what we had with Hurts with the
- 16:02Speaker 2: Eagles last year. It's like they're giving them the weapons,
- 16:05Speaker 2: You're giving them the offense, and now there's no excuses.
- 16:07Speaker 2: Like Justin Fields, he had excuses the last two years.
- 16:10Speaker 2: Everything was built in for those excuses. Now it's gone.
- 16:13Speaker 2: Now this is what you want as a Bears fan.
- 16:15Speaker 2: So to me, we already talked about their wintild I
- 16:17Speaker 2: love them at seven and a half. I think that's
- 16:19Speaker 2: a nice overplay, especially in that division. It's just again,
- 16:22Speaker 2: we're gonna go through all these NFC teams. It's a
- 16:24Speaker 2: changing up guards. We talked about I think two years ago,
- 16:27Speaker 2: the Rogers, the Brady's, the Staffords, that was eventually gonna flip.
- 16:31Speaker 2: These guys are gonna get old. This was gonna change.
- 16:33Speaker 2: Did it happen a lot sooner than I thought it would?
- 16:35Speaker 1: Yeah?
- 16:35Speaker 2: I did not think Stafford's arm was gonna fall off,
- 16:37Speaker 2: and I mean Rogers would be out of the division,
- 16:40Speaker 2: out of the NFC so quick. So to me, it's
- 16:44Speaker 2: kind of a fun wonky year of we already talked about,
- 16:47Speaker 2: like Hurts, is he really a number one guy in
- 16:49Speaker 2: the NFC? Chad? It's kind of crazy to think that way.
- 16:51Speaker 2: But the NFC, the turnover has been so insane that
- 16:55Speaker 2: you know, just just thinking a team that improved so
- 16:57Speaker 2: much from last year that could take a huge jump.
- 16:59Speaker 2: It's gotta be the Bears. It's just wide open there.
- 17:01Speaker 2: They're in a division that they easy can win. This
- 17:03Speaker 2: division people are hyping up Detroit. This is exactly where
- 17:06Speaker 2: you want to be, Chad. Do you want to be
- 17:07Speaker 2: in a division that the team that hasn't made the playoffs,
- 17:10Speaker 2: or they do make the playoffs, or just a joke
- 17:12Speaker 2: every year like Detroit is the most hype team in
- 17:14Speaker 2: your division. So to me, the biggest jump I'm expecting
- 17:17Speaker 2: will be the Chicago Bears.
- 17:18Speaker 1: Well, look right now with bet three six five. The
- 17:22Speaker 1: Chicago Bears. I think I bet them earlier this year
- 17:26Speaker 1: at one hundred to one. They are now fifty to
- 17:30Speaker 1: one at bet three six five. Nate, I know on
- 17:34Speaker 1: your podcast on the Athletics NFL podcast, which is very good,
- 17:40Speaker 1: you had interesting comments about the Bears and what they've
- 17:44Speaker 1: done with their money, how they've managed it, and how
- 17:47Speaker 1: they positioned themselves for next season. Explain yourself.
- 17:50Speaker 3: Oh man, I say a lot of words, so I'm
- 17:53Speaker 3: not exactly how which you want.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Me to run back to you. Matt Mitsure gave me.
- 17:57Speaker 3: The quote, Well was it this off season?
- 17:59Speaker 1: The Bears had a lot of money in their wallet,
- 18:02Speaker 1: said the biggest podcaster of all NFL podcasters.
- 18:07Speaker 3: Literal biggest.
- 18:08Speaker 1: But they didn't let it burn a hole in their pocket.
- 18:11Speaker 1: They kept next off season's cap space and draft capital.
- 18:17Speaker 1: This team is feisty.
- 18:19Speaker 3: Ah, feisty, Yes, that was the term I used. Also huge.
- 18:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 18:23Speaker 4: I'm also big on their overplay. I'm very bullish on
- 18:25Speaker 4: the Bears, even we talked about the roster moves. I
- 18:28Speaker 4: actually really like Ibra flu Smettie Flus, their head coach.
- 18:32Speaker 4: What what the Bears are? Yeah, I there's something to them.
- 18:37Speaker 4: He's a ball coach, and I meet that as a
- 18:40Speaker 4: very complimentary sense. We want these guys to be CEOs.
- 18:43Speaker 4: I thought one of the coolest things that he did
- 18:44Speaker 4: was as soon as he came to the Bears, he goes,
- 18:46Speaker 4: I'm not taking I'm not doing Blake play calling for
- 18:48Speaker 4: the defense. Defense coordinators, got it, I got I got
- 18:50Speaker 4: too much on my plate.
- 18:52Speaker 3: I love that.
- 18:52Speaker 4: I love the humbleness of understanding that I'm not a
- 18:55Speaker 4: guru and I'm not like it like this is my
- 18:57Speaker 4: defense and letting his guys go to work. I really
- 18:59Speaker 4: like the offensive coiner Luke Getzi.
- 19:02Speaker 3: I think that what they had to work with last
- 19:05Speaker 3: year in Chicago was it was bad.
- 19:07Speaker 4: It's even worse than people realized the level of talent
- 19:10Speaker 4: that Chicago team had last year. And there's games they
- 19:13Speaker 4: gave the Eagles a fight. They're really well coached on
- 19:17Speaker 4: offense and defense, and it's a classic like can't or
- 19:19Speaker 4: won't kind of thing. The people were getting on them
- 19:21Speaker 4: like why don't they do this?
- 19:22Speaker 3: Why don't do this?
- 19:23Speaker 4: It's like, I don't think they can because they have
- 19:25Speaker 4: no talent and that's why they can't do what you
- 19:27Speaker 4: guys are yelling about them to do. So I'm optimistic
- 19:30Speaker 4: about that coaching staff and then that now we're talking
- 19:32Speaker 4: about the talent and flux that they got the Bears
- 19:34Speaker 4: from my answer for this question as well, that you
- 19:36Speaker 4: guys had about who's most improved, and it was just
- 19:38Speaker 4: because they had that roster or that salar cap space,
- 19:41Speaker 4: the draft picks and all that. I love Darnell Wright,
- 19:44Speaker 4: their first round pick this year from Tennessee. He was
- 19:48Speaker 4: right neck and neck with me for me for Paris
- 19:50Speaker 4: Johnson as offensive tackle one. I like the defensive tackles
- 19:54Speaker 4: they took on Day two. I love the running back
- 19:57Speaker 4: Roshawn Johnson and the receiver Tyers Scott from Cincinnati.
- 20:00Speaker 3: I really like those pieces as Day three guys.
- 20:02Speaker 4: Tyler Scott I think will have great synergy with Justin
- 20:04Speaker 4: Fields because he's a deep threat and everything. The Dj
- 20:07Speaker 4: Moore thing part of the trade. They did everything. They
- 20:10Speaker 4: did a lot of things right this offseason. Was it
- 20:12Speaker 4: all perfect, like they did they get some edge rusher?
- 20:15Speaker 4: Did they get some you know, did they go with
- 20:17Speaker 4: Jalen Carter at the ninth pick? No, But for what
- 20:20Speaker 4: they were given, I really liked what they did this offseason.
- 20:22Speaker 4: And I'm with you guys where I'm bullish on their
- 20:24Speaker 4: over win totals, and I think that they can make
- 20:26Speaker 4: some noise in that division. And I do think they
- 20:28Speaker 4: are going to be feisty. But and on top of that,
- 20:31Speaker 4: I am optimistic on Justin Fields. I'm excited to see
- 20:34Speaker 4: what he can be as a thrower this year because,
- 20:36Speaker 4: like Simon said, he has no more excuses as a thrower.
- 20:38Speaker 4: Those pockets will be cleaner, he'll have a little bit,
- 20:41Speaker 4: he'll have much better weapons. So I'm optimistic about him.
- 20:44Speaker 4: But now it's like, now I can't keep making up
- 20:46Speaker 4: excuses abouts receiver runing the wrong route or running a
- 20:49Speaker 4: short route. It's like, Okay, let's see what you got Justin.
- 20:51Speaker 4: But yeah, I'm pretty pretty high on the Bears this year.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Justin Field's college graduate from the Ohio State University on
- 21:00Speaker 1: his way to becoming the single greatest quarterback in the
- 21:03Speaker 1: history of the Chicago Bears. But here's the thing. I
- 21:08Speaker 1: can't believe I'm saying this. Look, I love the Bears.
- 21:10Speaker 1: I love everything they did, I love their draft. I'm
- 21:13Speaker 1: super excited about how they're managing the cap, how they're
- 21:16Speaker 1: managing resources. Acquisition. Season has been great. I know this
- 21:22Speaker 1: is counter but the Philadelphia Eagles after the Super Bowl,
- 21:27Speaker 1: we're on the precipice of potentially falling into a contract
- 21:34Speaker 1: and talent abyss right, And we didn't know what was
- 21:39Speaker 1: going to happen with Jalen Hurtz. Could he get a
- 21:41Speaker 1: cap for a team friendly contract. We knew they were
- 21:44Speaker 1: going to lose their top running back. There were questions
- 21:48Speaker 1: about what was happening in the front seven. They were
- 21:51Speaker 1: a little bit thin. They lost one of their best
- 21:55Speaker 1: linebackers to the Bears in free agency. How he does
- 22:00Speaker 1: what how he does and makes the obvious choices, doesn't
- 22:06Speaker 1: try to outthink himself or anybody else. He gets Jalen Carter,
- 22:12Speaker 1: He makes really smart pick with Nolan Smith. He builds
- 22:16Speaker 1: back what you need to build on the offensive line,
- 22:20Speaker 1: Like I love he built the defensive backfield. The Eagles
- 22:25Speaker 1: were the best team in the NFC last season, and
- 22:30Speaker 1: I feel like they natally got better, but they put
- 22:33Speaker 1: themselves in a position to be better for a longer
- 22:35Speaker 1: period of time. Also because of the contract they signed
- 22:38Speaker 1: with Jalen Hurts. I'm surprised neither of you brought that up,
- 22:41Speaker 1: especially you Simon.
- 22:44Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like the general general fans know
- 22:47Speaker 2: that though the Eagles are the best, they just went
- 22:49Speaker 2: to Super Bowl.
- 22:50Speaker 1: It's right, they don't know that they were also in
- 22:54Speaker 1: a kind of precarious position after the Super Bowl, like
- 22:58Speaker 1: they had potentially a lot of talent hole and in
- 23:00Speaker 1: the span of three months, they've made themselves equal to
- 23:03Speaker 1: what they were on paper or potentially better in the
- 23:06Speaker 1: longer term, a.
- 23:07Speaker 2: Talent hold on what though they won their home game,
- 23:10Speaker 2: their first home game, they won thirty eight to seven.
- 23:12Speaker 2: Their second one, I think they won thirty eight to
- 23:14Speaker 2: seven Chad, So it's like, yeah, if they dropped fourteen
- 23:16Speaker 2: points out of that, sure, maybe it'd be a little
- 23:19Speaker 2: closer game. But the biggest reason the Eagles are just
- 23:22Speaker 2: a boring team to talk about is no one else
- 23:23Speaker 2: in the NFC improved to catch them. Right the forty
- 23:25Speaker 2: nine ers, we don't know who the hell is going
- 23:28Speaker 2: to be their quarterback right, and then you go to
- 23:30Speaker 2: the Cowboys. I love talking cowboys. It's fun to shoot
- 23:33Speaker 2: on the Cowboys, but it's boring. It's like, Okay, is
- 23:35Speaker 2: dad going to take that next step? How the hell
- 23:38Speaker 2: do we know? There's just there's no team who put
- 23:39Speaker 2: ahead of them. So it's kind of I get what
- 23:42Speaker 2: the media was trying to make a case the Eagles
- 23:43Speaker 2: were gonna slip a little bit. There was just nothing there.
- 23:46Speaker 2: Like even the linebacker they lost to, you guys, Chad,
- 23:48Speaker 2: he wasn't that great until last year, like he improved
- 23:51Speaker 2: every year. But there's nothing like, you know, having people
- 23:54Speaker 2: step in and run a boring zone defense. That's literally
- 23:56Speaker 2: what we did last year. We ran the defense that
- 23:58Speaker 2: was we will let you stablish ninety nine times that
- 24:01Speaker 2: one hundredth time won't kill us. You're not gonna score
- 24:03Speaker 2: a touchdown here. We're gonna hold you to a field goal.
- 24:05Speaker 2: It's a boring defense, but it worked. I mean, once again,
- 24:08Speaker 2: who knows how their defense is gonna be the upcoming year.
- 24:10Speaker 2: But I just know their offense. That was the whole
- 24:13Speaker 2: key to this. It's like if they keep their offense,
- 24:15Speaker 2: if they re signed hurts, they're brought back Aga. They
- 24:18Speaker 2: still have Smith on the outside and got her at
- 24:20Speaker 2: tight end and that o Lion Chat. I just I
- 24:23Speaker 2: never really wavered about it. To me, it's just a
- 24:24Speaker 2: boring team. The Eagles. We expect regression that just isn't
- 24:28Speaker 2: regression there because there's no really competitive team to challenge them.
- 24:31Speaker 2: So you know, it's something that loves good football. I
- 24:33Speaker 2: think the Cowboys to them is their biggest challenger. The Cowboys. Historically,
- 24:37Speaker 2: when you play a divisional foe, no one's gonna know
- 24:40Speaker 2: you better. So that's the only team, honestly, not the
- 24:42Speaker 2: forty nine ers. It's the Cowboys. They're really worry me.
- 24:44Speaker 2: It's just a team that they know the Eagles really well.
- 24:47Speaker 2: Like they both play each other so well every year,
- 24:49Speaker 2: so I get where you're coming from. They're just it's
- 24:51Speaker 2: just a boring team, honestly, the Eagles, Like everyone's gonna
- 24:54Speaker 2: bet they're over, everyone's gonna take hurts for MVP. It's
- 24:57Speaker 2: just it's gonna be business as usual again. We talked
- 24:59Speaker 2: about it last year, first time in NFL history, first
- 25:01Speaker 2: time ever in NFL's history, a new coach and a
- 25:04Speaker 2: new quarterback, five years between two different Super Bowls, so
- 25:07Speaker 2: It's all about Howie. That's the key here. It's like
- 25:10Speaker 2: the players change, the coaches change. You got Howie, you
- 25:14Speaker 2: got Stotland, the greatest offensive line coach in football. It's
- 25:17Speaker 2: all gonna work chat. So that's just my view. And
- 25:19Speaker 2: the Eagles they're kind of a boring team. I don't
- 25:20Speaker 2: want to HiPE him too much, but holy shit, man,
- 25:23Speaker 2: are they really good.
- 25:25Speaker 3: I'm glad he brought up Stotland though, because it's that.
- 25:27Speaker 3: That's the thing too.
- 25:28Speaker 4: It's like, as long as he's there, psyching can leave
- 25:31Speaker 4: the offensive Cordier.
- 25:31Speaker 2: It's like, hey, the.
- 25:33Speaker 4: Bread is buttered by that offensive line. So he's there,
- 25:37Speaker 4: and they always have a plan for the offensive defensive line.
- 25:40Speaker 4: That's why I love about Howie's even though he's a
- 25:43Speaker 4: kind of stat NERD's.
- 25:44Speaker 3: Dream, or at least everybody, but they all want to be.
- 25:47Speaker 4: It's hilarious that he doesn't chase like, yes, he chased
- 25:49Speaker 4: receivers and everything, but he goes no offense defensive line
- 25:52Speaker 4: like we're we're always replenishing those positions, and that's why
- 25:55Speaker 4: they are in this position to do this. So you
- 25:58Speaker 4: can drop in a quarterback and let him develop. When
- 26:00Speaker 4: Jalen hurts when he can just sit in the pocket
- 26:02Speaker 4: and clean pockets. And so I always just love that
- 26:05Speaker 4: with Howie is just he knows, he knows where the
- 26:07Speaker 4: strength of an NFL team is built, and he has
- 26:10Speaker 4: no kind of questions about that.
- 26:12Speaker 1: So interestingly at be three sus five, the Eagles are
- 26:18Speaker 1: eight to one to win the Super Bowl. Uh, the
- 26:21Speaker 1: San Francisco forty nine ers seven to one to win
- 26:26Speaker 1: the Super Bowl. UH. And in the conference the hold on,
- 26:33Speaker 1: I can't find it, hold on, hold on to win
- 26:38Speaker 1: the NFC title. What's interesting is the Eagles are three
- 26:42Speaker 1: to one, the Niners are three and a half to one. Okay.
- 26:48Speaker 3: And also the Cowboys have Mike McCarthy now too. That's
- 26:51Speaker 3: is calling place.
- 26:52Speaker 4: That's the thing every time I get optimistic about the
- 26:55Speaker 4: Cowboys Mike, because I actually do like some of the
- 26:57Speaker 4: things I did this offseason, it's like Mike McCarthy's calling plays.
- 27:00Speaker 2: Now.
- 27:01Speaker 3: God, I always just always keep that in the back
- 27:03Speaker 3: of your mind when you talking.
- 27:04Speaker 1: About the Yeah, well listen, Nate, Yes, if I can
- 27:10Speaker 1: read back one of your many quotes from.
- 27:13Speaker 3: Your a lot of words from.
- 27:16Speaker 1: The Athletics NFL podcast, Mazy Smith was the last piece
- 27:22Speaker 1: this defense needed. Yeah, if these off season moves click
- 27:26Speaker 1: on this roster, watch out. Yeah, explain yourself the.
- 27:33Speaker 4: Other off season moves just to kind of check the
- 27:36Speaker 4: check that kind of conversation pieces they trade for Stefan
- 27:39Speaker 4: Gilmour and Brandon Cooks on either side of the ball.
- 27:41Speaker 4: I usually don't say that a thirty two or thirty
- 27:44Speaker 4: three year old cornerback is like a really good kind
- 27:47Speaker 4: of king making move. But for the Cowboys, they were
- 27:50Speaker 4: able to get through with basically bottom tier second corners
- 27:53Speaker 4: outside of Treyvon Diggs last year, which is kind of
- 27:55Speaker 4: remarkable of how aggressive they play, how much man coverage
- 27:59Speaker 4: they play. But why I said the Mazee Smith signing
- 28:01Speaker 4: for a draft pick their first rounder this year is
- 28:05Speaker 4: when they had last year when they traded for Jonathan Hankins,
- 28:08Speaker 4: who was a big nose tackle from the Raiders. They
- 28:11Speaker 4: traded for him, and after he came on board, their
- 28:14Speaker 4: run defense just.
- 28:14Speaker 3: Exploded in a good way.
- 28:16Speaker 4: I guess it exploded offense, it's a better way to
- 28:19Speaker 4: phrase that, but they became the best run defense on
- 28:21Speaker 4: first and second down in the NFL when Jonathan Hankins
- 28:24Speaker 4: was on the field, And it's like was even close.
- 28:26Speaker 4: And why that matters. I'm talking about Jonathan Hagens talking
- 28:29Speaker 4: about Maaze Smith. It's the same position nose tackle, So
- 28:32Speaker 4: they got a younger, more explosive best comparisons like don
- 28:36Speaker 4: Terry Poe type nose tackle that could be disruptive even
- 28:39Speaker 4: if he doesn't fill the box score. The rest of
- 28:41Speaker 4: that defense is so fast with Michaeh Parsons, DeMarcus Lawrence,
- 28:46Speaker 4: even just outside of that, they're like Donovan Wilson, Jay
- 28:49Speaker 4: Ron Curse, all these guys they fly around, and so
- 28:53Speaker 4: getting a guy like Mazie Smith to kind of shore
- 28:55Speaker 4: it up and hold the fort on the interior built
- 28:58Speaker 4: through the spine of their defense kind of lets all
- 29:00Speaker 4: those skill guys, those fast guys fly around and go rogue.
- 29:04Speaker 4: Sometimes their defense goes rogue and they make up for
- 29:06Speaker 4: it because they're so fast. It's opposite of how the
- 29:08Speaker 4: Eagles play. Everybody's a sound, perfect zone. Everybody's sound and safe.
- 29:13Speaker 4: The Cowboys are flying around, running around, blitz, we're running
- 29:16Speaker 4: man coverage. Then we'll switch it off and uncover too.
- 29:18Speaker 4: So now he's just getting more this kind of soundness
- 29:21Speaker 4: in the middle. With Leyton vander esh as well, I
- 29:24Speaker 4: compared him to Machalele, the old soccer player, you know,
- 29:27Speaker 4: kind of he was the central defender kind of shorted
- 29:29Speaker 4: up for the real Madrid. I know, I'm really just
- 29:32Speaker 4: turning the numbers here with that reference right there, but
- 29:34Speaker 4: I think that Mazy Smith just helps out the defense
- 29:37Speaker 4: as a whole and just really unlocks with the speed.
- 29:40Speaker 3: Of the rest of his players.
- 29:41Speaker 4: So it was a draft pick I didn't know I wanted,
- 29:45Speaker 4: you know, like when I was a neutral fan, I
- 29:47Speaker 4: was like, oh, that pairing, Yeah, I like that, And
- 29:51Speaker 4: so it was one I've gotten really excited about because
- 29:53Speaker 4: what I think the repercussions of what will happen for
- 29:56Speaker 4: the rest of his teammates on that defense. So I
- 29:58Speaker 4: think there's not gonna be much regression on the cow
- 30:00Speaker 4: Boys defense, But you know, just the offense we have
- 30:02Speaker 4: to still figure out with Mike McCarthy Collin plays.
- 30:05Speaker 1: By the way, the Dallas Cowboys right now bet three
- 30:08Speaker 1: sixty five twelve to one to win the Super Bowl
- 30:15Speaker 1: right there with the New York right there with the
- 30:18Speaker 1: New York Jets. Come on, come on, that's just ridiculous.
- 30:24Speaker 1: The Cowboys are also plus five point fifty to win
- 30:29Speaker 1: the NFC. I don't think there's value on any of
- 30:34Speaker 1: these that we've talked about so far. But let me
- 30:37Speaker 1: ask a couple of YouTube questions. Okay, Simon, I'm gonna
- 30:42Speaker 1: start with you. Who is the best team to win
- 30:48Speaker 1: the fewest games this year in the NFC? So what
- 30:53Speaker 1: team do we think is really good is actually not
- 30:55Speaker 1: going to win a lot of games, but will look
- 30:58Speaker 1: good losing games.
- 31:01Speaker 2: I mean, I feel like the easy answer will be
- 31:02Speaker 2: the Lions. It's just they're gonna be the all hype
- 31:05Speaker 2: team coming into the year. I think the end of
- 31:07Speaker 2: the year eight and two, the public just loves the Lions.
- 31:10Speaker 2: I think most better is like them as well. That
- 31:14Speaker 2: just would not be shocking to me them not falling apart,
- 31:17Speaker 2: but just them not being as good as people think
- 31:19Speaker 2: they're gonna be, just because it's a team that I
- 31:23Speaker 2: just don't know if I'm buying in on the coaching yet.
- 31:25Speaker 2: I know they retain a lot of their guys. They
- 31:26Speaker 2: did well not losing guys, but man, I still have
- 31:30Speaker 2: a lot of questions about this Lions team. I don't
- 31:32Speaker 2: know if they fix a lot of their issues on defense,
- 31:34Speaker 2: which was any team any team could run on the Lions.
- 31:38Speaker 2: Like That's why I'll never get why they passed on Carter.
- 31:40Speaker 2: They were giving up. I mean, I feel like the
- 31:42Speaker 2: Eagles set the tone for their entire season. Eagles Week one,
- 31:44Speaker 2: I think ran for two hundred yards on them and
- 31:46Speaker 2: that was just how it was all year for them.
- 31:47Speaker 2: So a team that I think people have high hopes
- 31:50Speaker 2: before that could easily disappoint gotta be the Lions.
- 31:54Speaker 3: The Lions is a good one.
- 31:55Speaker 4: And if you're just looking at like maybe over under
- 31:58Speaker 4: total and to to see who's gonna miss it by
- 32:00Speaker 4: that much, I would look at the Saints, who are
- 32:02Speaker 4: right now, I think at nine and a half, I
- 32:04Speaker 4: think is their win toldal right now? Kind of know
- 32:07Speaker 4: what Derek Carr is And also you know, it's is
- 32:11Speaker 4: that much difference between Dalton and Jamison Jamis Winston said
- 32:15Speaker 4: Jameson Williams. It's taking the Lions Jamis Winston kind of
- 32:18Speaker 4: like you know tandem that we've seen there. It's just
- 32:21Speaker 4: that the really and there's a lot of players I
- 32:23Speaker 4: like it on Saints. I love Chris olave here was
- 32:25Speaker 4: my Rookie of the Year pick last year. You know,
- 32:28Speaker 4: we'll see what happens with Michael Thomas. But you know,
- 32:30Speaker 4: but defensively, they lost a lot, especially their defensive line.
- 32:34Speaker 4: And for a team that doesn't blitz much. They run
- 32:37Speaker 4: some you know, simulated pressures where they bring four, but
- 32:40Speaker 4: they're still only bringing forward. It's not a true blitz.
- 32:43Speaker 4: They need rugged, badass defensive linement, and they lost three
- 32:47Speaker 4: of them this past offseason. So that defense has been
- 32:50Speaker 4: such a strength the last couple of years, kind of
- 32:52Speaker 4: low key one of the best defenses to watch, and
- 32:56Speaker 4: statistically as well, that Saints defense the last couple of years.
- 32:59Speaker 4: I think that defense gets a drop off even if
- 33:02Speaker 4: the offense, you know, gets a half bump off up
- 33:05Speaker 4: or a tier bump up. I just can see them,
- 33:07Speaker 4: like one injury and then the whole thing just you know,
- 33:10Speaker 4: house of cards just falls apart. So I think that
- 33:12Speaker 4: Saints team is kind of one that's their toe the line,
- 33:15Speaker 4: or they're walking a thin line between you know, a
- 33:18Speaker 4: ten win season or a five or six win season.
- 33:20Speaker 4: Hopefully they didn't trade next year's first round or because
- 33:23Speaker 4: or they have no kind of ambition to trade any
- 33:25Speaker 4: future draft picks like they like to do. So that
- 33:27Speaker 4: the Saints I'm kind of uneasy with, even if I
- 33:30Speaker 4: do like a lot of other players.
- 33:32Speaker 1: Saints are at nine and a half wins at bet
- 33:34Speaker 1: three six five, Detroit Lions at nine and a half
- 33:36Speaker 1: wins at bet three six five. Nobody mentioned either of
- 33:41Speaker 1: the teams that were nearly record setting in winning one
- 33:48Speaker 1: score games in which there is always some kind of
- 33:51Speaker 1: regression the following season. That is the Vikings and the Giants.
- 33:56Speaker 1: And if you were to say to me, if I
- 33:59Speaker 1: were to answer that quick question about sort of which
- 34:01Speaker 1: good team will lose the most games and probably look
- 34:05Speaker 1: good doing it, it's hard not to go with the Giants,
- 34:11Speaker 1: like they're going to be playing the Cowboys, who could
- 34:14Speaker 1: be improved. They're going to play in the Eagles, who
- 34:16Speaker 1: I think are as good, if not better. So why
- 34:21Speaker 1: are we not talking about the Giants at eight and
- 34:23Speaker 1: a half wins at bet three six five as the
- 34:26Speaker 1: team that will regress the most?
- 34:29Speaker 3: I guess I guess saw both of them regret.
- 34:33Speaker 4: Maybe in my head already have them regressing, so maybe
- 34:35Speaker 4: my discussion, I don't see either of them as playoff teams.
- 34:38Speaker 3: So like maybe in my own head I was like, oh, yeah.
- 34:41Speaker 4: There were only when seven eightish games anyway, so maybe
- 34:45Speaker 4: that's my answer with it, but I agree with maybe
- 34:47Speaker 4: especially the Giants. The Giants punched above their weight because
- 34:50Speaker 4: they're so well coached and they like what they basically said,
- 34:54Speaker 4: Daniel Jones, You're not going to ruin the game for us.
- 34:56Speaker 4: You're gonna have you just run play action at nakeds
- 34:58Speaker 4: and then you need to throw it down the field
- 35:00Speaker 4: to run. And that was their offense last year. And
- 35:02Speaker 4: let's get say, quant a whole bunch of touches. Let's
- 35:04Speaker 4: just do some pony offense. And then on defense, they
- 35:06Speaker 4: had nobody at linebacker, they had nobody really playing corner,
- 35:11Speaker 4: and they still were okay at times, which is like,
- 35:14Speaker 4: again credit to their coaches. So they might play exactly
- 35:18Speaker 4: the same this next year, even with a little bit
- 35:20Speaker 4: better talent, still seem like an eight win team. But
- 35:22Speaker 4: the Vikings, though, is they're trying to bridge between this
- 35:26Speaker 4: like quasi reload, quasi rebuild, but also kind of quasi
- 35:30Speaker 4: and competing right now, and I think that could easily
- 35:33Speaker 4: fall apart too. They wait, like I think their point
- 35:36Speaker 4: differential last year was five hundred. Anyways, like I think
- 35:39Speaker 4: they actually had a negative point differential last year, and
- 35:42Speaker 4: plus the fumble luck, I think they had, they've had.
- 35:44Speaker 4: They've so much going against them this year, and on
- 35:46Speaker 4: top of it, they've lost some talent too.
- 35:48Speaker 3: And yes, I know they.
- 35:49Speaker 4: Drafted some guys. Everybody has a draft, but I do
- 35:51Speaker 4: see the Vikings. Maybe in my head, Cannon, I already
- 35:54Speaker 4: pictured them already losing or being underwhelming and not being
- 35:56Speaker 4: a playoff team. So maybe that was not my answer
- 35:58Speaker 4: for the question, but I agree with that makings. I
- 36:00Speaker 4: can see you having an easy drop off this year.
- 36:03Speaker 1: Nate Tice, once again agreeing with Chad Molman Simon, Yeah.
- 36:07Speaker 2: I think one of my first bets I gave out
- 36:09Speaker 2: was the Giants under it's just it feels like it's
- 36:11Speaker 2: just by the book kind of play. It's a team
- 36:12Speaker 2: that I didn't. I didn't I put the lines over
- 36:15Speaker 2: them and the Vikings. Guy, I think Nate nailed it
- 36:17Speaker 2: where it's like we both everyone expects both of these
- 36:19Speaker 2: year to regress. The Vikings lost even though a defense
- 36:21Speaker 2: sucked last year. They lost a ton of starters from
- 36:24Speaker 2: last year's defense. On the flip side of the Giants,
- 36:27Speaker 2: I could see them improving, honestly, like they had no
- 36:30Speaker 2: receivers and Daniel Jones still somehow made it work, and
- 36:32Speaker 2: they were still gritting out these wins when he would
- 36:34Speaker 2: run for these random ass third downs and run for
- 36:37Speaker 2: ten yards and get her first down.
- 36:39Speaker 4: Well, his favorite betts last year was Daniel Jones rushing
- 36:41Speaker 4: overs like at every game.
- 36:43Speaker 2: It was the best and it just kept hitting like
- 36:46Speaker 2: he kept anytime he needed to make a play, he
- 36:48Speaker 2: kept making those plays. So it's one of those that
- 36:50Speaker 2: they were fortunate they had incredible coaching. But their regression
- 36:54Speaker 2: we all expect across the board for them is that
- 36:56Speaker 2: they won't have these fourth quarter comebacks they had. I
- 36:59Speaker 2: think it was more at the first six games they had,
- 37:03Speaker 2: they were down in the fourth quarter, not even single digits,
- 37:05Speaker 2: double digits, and they came back and won those games.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Like everyone's gonna remember that Lamar game. I mean they
- 37:10Speaker 2: were losing. I think Lamar had the ball, They're up ten.
- 37:14Speaker 2: I don't know if you picked it or funneled the ball.
- 37:15Speaker 2: They took it back for a touchdown. The next play
- 37:18Speaker 2: he got the ball back, he threw a pick and
- 37:19Speaker 2: they scored a touchdown. It was like a walk off winner.
- 37:21Speaker 2: So the Giants just had a lot of things bounced
- 37:23Speaker 2: their way. I'm with Chad, I expect the division to
- 37:26Speaker 2: be better. I mean, obviously the Commanders are. They're one
- 37:29Speaker 2: of those teams people are gonna better for wor worst
- 37:31Speaker 2: team in football next year, makes sense. But the Cowboys Eagles,
- 37:35Speaker 2: we expect them just to be as good. And I
- 37:37Speaker 2: just you know, when I look at this Giants team
- 37:39Speaker 2: did a lot of luck out of division, I just
- 37:41Speaker 2: don't see it repeat itself. Usually these coaches when they
- 37:44Speaker 2: take over a new gig, you don't have much tape
- 37:46Speaker 2: on their offense. They're gonna run. That's hard to really
- 37:48Speaker 2: prepare for. Now you have a whole offseason of the
- 37:50Speaker 2: most brilliant minds of football looking at this offense. He's
- 37:54Speaker 2: just gonna be different for this Giants team. So I
- 37:56Speaker 2: think the pressures on the Giants because they paid all
- 37:58Speaker 2: these guys, I see no pressure the Vikings. This feels
- 38:01Speaker 2: like a true tear down burnet team this upcoming season,
- 38:04Speaker 2: where it's well Kirk's last last year in the deal,
- 38:07Speaker 2: they got nothing on defense. They drafted a new I receiver,
- 38:10Speaker 2: which is awesome and good, that then not address any
- 38:12Speaker 2: of the real issues. That was a really stupid draft
- 38:15Speaker 2: pick by the Lakings. So once again, I just they
- 38:17Speaker 2: ad a home run on the Jefferson pick. Everything else
- 38:20Speaker 2: this team has done these last ten years just does
- 38:22Speaker 2: not really work, this Vikings team. So it's tough to say.
- 38:25Speaker 2: But in that division, I got it lines and I
- 38:28Speaker 2: got at the Bears, and then I do have it
- 38:30Speaker 2: really close between the Lakings and Green Bay. So that's
- 38:32Speaker 2: how I see is shaping up in that North division.
- 38:35Speaker 1: Hey, Nate, quick aside, there's a great question that came
- 38:39Speaker 1: in that I want to ask that I think is
- 38:41Speaker 1: really interesting. But since you have a six month old
- 38:44Speaker 1: and before the pod we were talking about kids, I
- 38:47Speaker 1: want to give you a little preview of what you're
- 38:50Speaker 1: headed for. While we were having this conversation, my phone
- 38:54Speaker 1: was ringing and it was my sixteen year old son,
- 38:57Speaker 1: and I know that he's home, so he's calling me
- 39:00Speaker 1: from somewhere in the house. So I texted him while
- 39:04Speaker 1: the phone is ringing, recording a pod done in a
- 39:08Speaker 1: little bit emergency question mark. He responded, Yes, the TV
- 39:15Speaker 1: in basement has no sound. Oh no, I wrote back,
- 39:20Speaker 1: that's not an emergency. He wrote back, we have different
- 39:24Speaker 1: definitions for emergency.
- 39:30Speaker 3: I can't wait for that.
- 39:33Speaker 1: I wrote back, You're funny, and that's why I don't
- 39:36Speaker 1: leave you with strangers, so good luck to parenting. Here
- 39:44Speaker 1: is here are two questions from listeners. This is from
- 39:50Speaker 1: AMP listener A Learn and I think it's a great question.
- 39:56Speaker 1: Could we ever see a defensive MVP? And the reason
- 39:58Speaker 1: he's asking this is because Micah Parsons is two hundred
- 40:02Speaker 1: to one. We know what an insane athlete he is.
- 40:05Speaker 1: We know he's bulken up to play defensive end. It's
- 40:08Speaker 1: very possible this guy sets a single season sack record.
- 40:13Speaker 1: Could that make him make him an MVP? Would that
- 40:16Speaker 1: make him a value buy for MVP at two hundred
- 40:20Speaker 1: and one, Simon.
- 40:23Speaker 2: No dumb bet. Cooper Cup had the greatest buy receiver
- 40:26Speaker 2: season we'll ever see, most likely, and he didn't even
- 40:29Speaker 2: come in a sniff length of winning MVP. It's just
- 40:32Speaker 2: it's a QB award. It's just the way the league is.
- 40:35Speaker 2: If we have a lockout season, I don't hate that bet.
- 40:37Speaker 2: If we have a weird shortened season where it's like
- 40:40Speaker 2: they're only going to play thirteen or fourteen games, I
- 40:42Speaker 2: do not hate those kind of bets. But in a
- 40:45Speaker 2: normal season, I just never Since I've been a pro,
- 40:48Speaker 2: I mean, growing eleven years now, I've never not given
- 40:50Speaker 2: out a quarterback for MVP. It's just it's boring. But
- 40:53Speaker 2: that's just the way the award goes now. Unless a
- 40:55Speaker 2: running back runs for a shit ton of yards and
- 40:58Speaker 2: their team is the number one seed, is not going
- 41:00Speaker 2: to go to anyone else but the quarterback. So I
- 41:02Speaker 2: get where he's coming from. I love those kind of
- 41:04Speaker 2: long shot bets, but I just wouldn't do it. I mean,
- 41:07Speaker 2: is he gonna have thirty sacks? And is a guywaysing
- 41:09Speaker 2: me a number one seed? Because that's what you need
- 41:11Speaker 2: at two hundred and one, that's not good enough for me.
- 41:14Speaker 2: I need maybe three hundred four hundred to one to
- 41:16Speaker 2: really get that payoff. There.
- 41:17Speaker 3: You're betting on a once in a lifetime season.
- 41:20Speaker 4: Exactly, Yeah, not exactly where how I like to put
- 41:23Speaker 4: my money throw my money at. And even you look
- 41:27Speaker 4: at eight ish, yes or years ago, seven years ago,
- 41:29Speaker 4: JJ Watt was having incredible historic seasons. I mean, if
- 41:33Speaker 4: it's looking back at those stats, it's even more comical
- 41:36Speaker 4: now as as you get further and further away from it.
- 41:38Speaker 4: And JJ Watt's got a lot of you know, good pump,
- 41:42Speaker 4: a lot of people like JJ Watt, and he didn't
- 41:44Speaker 4: get a vote.
- 41:45Speaker 3: So that's that. Yeah, I don't think a.
- 41:47Speaker 4: Guy like Michaeh Parsons or anybody else like that would
- 41:50Speaker 4: have to be It has to be a perfect storm,
- 41:52Speaker 4: like you said, has to be a true true shatters
- 41:54Speaker 4: a record true true fifteen and two team fourteen and
- 41:58Speaker 4: three team all time defense, and then that's like and
- 42:01Speaker 4: they might even get a couple of votes, much less
- 42:03Speaker 4: getting the actual award.
- 42:04Speaker 3: So I like more like a dB.
- 42:07Speaker 4: For Defensive Player of the Year than a defensive player
- 42:10Speaker 4: for MVP, if that makes sense, as far as got
- 42:12Speaker 4: like an outlier beat.
- 42:14Speaker 1: One last question from Ian from Egan. He's listening on
- 42:20Speaker 1: AMP right now. Last year, Seattle was considered horrendous heading
- 42:24Speaker 1: into the season. By Christmas, they were contending for that
- 42:27Speaker 1: playoff spot. Who is this year's Seattle Nate As a
- 42:32Speaker 1: Seattle backer, I'll start with you.
- 42:34Speaker 3: Oh, I was a sale backer last year.
- 42:36Speaker 4: I had had over wins, i'd have playoffs, but I
- 42:39Speaker 4: was like I had over on there because I like,
- 42:41Speaker 4: I was a fan of GIDO.
- 42:43Speaker 3: If I had to pick.
- 42:44Speaker 4: A quote unquote a Seattle this year, it would be
- 42:46Speaker 4: the Falcons. Just that division. What the tape makeup that
- 42:50Speaker 4: offense is. I'm a big fan of Arthur Smith and
- 42:53Speaker 4: his offensive guru ship. I really do think he is
- 42:58Speaker 4: kind of an under rated play color right now because
- 43:00Speaker 4: people are too fascinated with Kyle Pitts's box score stats
- 43:03Speaker 4: as opposed to what he actually does as a play
- 43:05Speaker 4: color and a play designer. I think the defense will
- 43:07Speaker 4: not be great. I think they struggle to even be
- 43:10Speaker 4: like eighteenth in any advanced metrics DVOA or success rate
- 43:15Speaker 4: or anything like that. But if they can get to
- 43:17Speaker 4: that level twentieth eighteenth on defense, I think this is
- 43:20Speaker 4: a legit top ten offense. They were twelfth last year
- 43:22Speaker 4: in DVA, twelfth in EPA per play. I think they're
- 43:27Speaker 4: fifth in success rate as an offense last year, and
- 43:29Speaker 4: that's with Marcus Murriota throwing half the throws into the
- 43:32Speaker 4: stands like so and Tyler Olgiar and Cordero Patterson running back.
- 43:37Speaker 3: Now they got Bijon. I'm a fan of Desmond Ritterer.
- 43:39Speaker 4: I don't think he's going to be like a superstar
- 43:41Speaker 4: or anything, but I do think he could be an
- 43:43Speaker 4: average ish quarterback in this league, or above average. He
- 43:46Speaker 4: can get to that golf tire that's kind of like
- 43:49Speaker 4: my threshold. Can he get to the golf tire? And
- 43:51Speaker 4: I do think Rider can in a perfect world get
- 43:53Speaker 4: to that, and they're giving him no excuses. So Falcons,
- 43:57Speaker 4: I'm pretty bullshan because I do like their offense. I
- 44:00Speaker 4: think their offense could be really, really good, and I
- 44:02Speaker 4: think the defense they get an injection of talent as
- 44:05Speaker 4: a defensive coordinator from the Saints that will kind of
- 44:07Speaker 4: change things up of how he attacks, and I do
- 44:09Speaker 4: like that. I think Dp's kind of ran this course
- 44:12Speaker 4: as an NFL defensive coordinator. Even if I rarely respect
- 44:14Speaker 4: coach Piece, but I really like where the Falcons are
- 44:17Speaker 4: going as a team and I think they could surprise
- 44:19Speaker 4: some people this year first sweep.
- 44:20Speaker 1: Of course, we are in Atlanta Falcons podcast. We always
- 44:25Speaker 1: have been, to our detriment. We always will be, because
- 44:29Speaker 1: they are always the team that is undervalued in the
- 44:32Speaker 1: market because you know why, they're an NFC South team
- 44:36Speaker 1: and nobody gives a fuck. But if I can quote
- 44:39Speaker 1: you back, Matt Mitchell did such good research before this podcast.
- 44:44Speaker 1: It was one of the teams that he quoted you on. Okay, quote,
- 44:49Speaker 1: this team is clearly all in on their weird offensive
- 44:52Speaker 1: identity and I'm into it. I'm bullish on Arthur Smith
- 44:56Speaker 1: and this actual positionless foot Simon, you can have one
- 45:03Speaker 1: minute to give an answer for Ian from Egan's question
- 45:09Speaker 1: about who is this year's Seattle. I don't want people
- 45:13Speaker 1: to walk away from here not having your opinion on
- 45:16Speaker 1: this question.
- 45:18Speaker 2: My favorite left for dead. Nobody believes as US team
- 45:22Speaker 2: easily this season's gonna be Arizona. Arizona, They're terrible, they've lost,
- 45:26Speaker 2: They've got to the team. What do they have that's
- 45:29Speaker 2: left though? Chad Kyler Murray and we know this kid
- 45:32Speaker 2: when he's right. I mean, he's obviously one of the
- 45:34Speaker 2: top five best quarterbacks in the NFC, Like the NFC
- 45:37Speaker 2: just doesn't have good quarterbacks in that So to me,
- 45:40Speaker 2: at four and a half, he's worth the risk of
- 45:41Speaker 2: taking it over. It's like that Watson last year in Houston,
- 45:44Speaker 2: where I think they're over under with six and a half,
- 45:46Speaker 2: people are pounding the under. I think they might have
- 45:48Speaker 2: went six and ten. But it's one of those where
- 45:51Speaker 2: I agree Arizona's horrible. I don't thin they're gonna win
- 45:54Speaker 2: any type of Super Bowl, but four and a half
- 45:56Speaker 2: wins I could easily bet that over. It's same thing
- 45:58Speaker 2: where Seahawks weren't that good of a tea, but they
- 46:00Speaker 2: had the pieces there and they got lucky in different games.
- 46:02Speaker 2: So to me, if Arizona keeps NWK Hopkins, they keep
- 46:05Speaker 2: Kyler Murray head into the season, I don't hate them
- 46:08Speaker 2: to be a team that could easily go over four
- 46:09Speaker 2: and a half.
