Cubs struggles continue, Chiefs documentary, Eugene Rapay talks Cyclones & the Voice of the Chiefs Mitch Holthus & the Chicken Coop Contest · The Lunch Rush with Trent Condon

• 0:11
All right, good afternoon. Welcome to Miller and Condon on
• 0:14
a Friday, the last non football Friday until early Feb.
• 0:24
Put that in your pipe and smoke it.
• 0:27
Miller and Condon with you. Trent Condon, Ken Miller talking
• 0:29
sports with you for the next couple of hours.
• 0:32
Appreciate your starting your afternoon here with us on the
• 0:35
Iowa Sports Radio Network. Wherever you're listening.
• 0:38
We're grateful that you are, whether that be in State 8 or on
• 0:41
the iheart app. Here's what's coming up on our
• 0:44
program in the next couple of hours.
• 0:46
We'll start with our friend Eugene Repay covers Iowa State
• 0:49
for the Des Moines Register. Matt Campbell's final press
• 0:53
conference prior to the K State game was held yesterday.
• 0:56
We'll recap that pick Eugene's brain on some of the training
• 1:00
camp stories. But he's been able to glean
• 1:02
where they started, where they're at, etcetera.
• 1:04
But Eugene Repay on Iowa State when he joins us here coming up
• 1:08
in about 25 minutes. Then we'll hear from Mitch
• 1:11
Holtis. It is on tape today as the
• 1:14
Chiefs are in Seattle for pre season game number 2.
• 1:18
After that, we'll give 4 of you an opportunity to win some grub
• 1:21
from the chicken coop. Three locations in Urbandale,
• 1:25
12725, Meredith, West Des Moines, 60th and Ashworth and in
• 1:28
Ankeny just southwest of the OR of the D Mac campus on oral
• 1:34
labor. So that's coming up to at the
• 1:36
end of the first hour of the show, Tom Caker will talk Hawks
• 1:39
to kick off our number 2, and I'm guessing a very happy Mike
• 1:43
Palm from Circa Sports will join us about 1:30.
• 1:47
I'll go behind the counter and pick his brain.
• 1:50
Circa had a major, major win here today.
• 1:53
For those of you new to the show, yes, we talk about Circa a
• 1:56
lot. The reason we're on the air is
• 1:59
because Circa Sports, they are primary sponsor A.
• 2:03
It's a real easy ask for both Trent and I to endorse something
• 2:06
that we absolutely both believe 1000% in, in this in what they
• 2:12
do both sports wagering and the property itself and just the the
• 2:16
the human beings behind the property.
• 2:18
But they were awarded circa circa David, the Goliath. 2 of
• 2:24
them, FanDuel DraftKings, 3 entities for two non tethered
• 2:30
sports wagering licenses in the state of Missouri, KC, Saint
• 2:34
  Louis, Saint Joe, Independence, Springfield.
• 2:37
Who am I missing? You're getting a lot of.
• 2:39
Them major major cities FanDuel ran third circa got one of the
• 2:45
two DraftKings and circa. This is a huge win for this
• 2:48
little engine that could well done Circa sports.
• 2:51
So Mike Palm on that and of course we'll get some of the
• 2:53
latest numbers what he's seeing etcetera, etcetera.
• 2:56
Busy week out there as they hosted Best Bash 5 and their
• 2:59
contest continue with both the millions of their Survivor and I
• 3:03
think we'll probably stop there because I'm guessing a lot of
• 3:05
our audiences. You never know, though.
• 3:08
Yeah, you never know. How great would it be, though,
• 3:10
if we find out that there is an Iowa entry?
• 3:13
In that $100,000 buy in contest that's essentially the same as
• 3:17
Survivor, but it's just obviously fewer people going for
• 3:20
a, a nice prize but well done circle.
• 3:22
We'll get to that at 1:30. So I guess we should start with
• 3:26
the we do a little baseball. Owen Casey made it in time.
• 3:29
Did you see his first swing in as a major leaguer?
• 3:32
I didn't. Oh my God, Trenton it this had
• 3:35
double extra bases written all over it.
• 3:37
Dave Schneider, who's not a left fielder for the Blue Jays.
• 3:40
He's kind of a utility guy. He's up and down between Buffalo
• 3:43
and AAA and the big club in Toronto and he was in left
• 3:47
field. He took a he kind of took a bad
• 3:48
angle to the ball, but made an unbelievable recovery.
• 3:52
Superman catch flying through the air, glove fully extended.
• 3:56
He's a short little dude. He's like 5859, but robbed Owen
• 4:00
Casey of a hit first pitch he saw from a Hall of Famer be Hall
• 4:05
of Famer Max Scherzer did not fall and he would not get a hit
• 4:09
for the remainder of the game. You found a price right as we
• 4:12
were getting on here. So I I found it, it was minus
• 4:16
180th FanDuel -155. So they expected him to, yes.
• 4:21
-155 at a couple other places. So it was out there and it was
• 4:25
right as it was announced. I was surprised to even see that
• 4:27
in the prop market, but I think it was 4 different places that
• 4:30
had it listed there. The smooth swing that he has.
• 4:33
He really? Does that left-handed stick?
• 4:35
It just lefties look better swinging a baseball bat.
• 4:37
They do swinging a Golf Club. Do you agree?
• 4:39
The left-handed? Shooting a hockey puck.
• 4:41
Yeah, it just those lefties and he's got kind of everything that
• 4:44
you're looking for. I'm I'm excited to watch him.
• 4:46
Well, you can't won't get a chance today.
• 4:48
Trent, as Craig Counsel in his infinite wisdom, is going to
• 4:50
keep his ass staple to the bench.
• 4:52
Give him a day, maybe to reconfigure himself.
• 4:55
It's. It was a busy day getting.
• 4:57
There Fairpoint Day game today. Council.
• 5:00
Yeah, Council's getting killed for a number of things.
• 5:02
His bat, his batting order. I mean, there's two guys are
• 5:05
hitting right now, Nico Horner and Matt Shaw, and they're 7th
• 5:08
and 8th in the in the batting order.
• 5:10
But maybe he'll get an opportunity to pinch it.
• 5:12
I'm guessing he'll get his opportunity tomorrow.
• 5:15
It's going to be a part of the chicken coop giveaway here.
• 5:18
Will Casey get a hit today or tomorrow?
• 5:21
And again, the chicken coop rules, if you haven't played in
• 5:24
the last 40 days, you're eligible whether you've won or
• 5:26
not, you can't play for that 30 day period.
• 5:29
So that will be one of the questions.
• 5:31
Trent and I will get to it about 10 minutes or so before.
• 5:34
Noon and gift certificates from the last couple of weeks will be
• 5:37
going out. We're going to be catching up.
• 5:38
Vacation, we're catching up. If you're been waiting or
• 5:41
waiting for a call, we will get to you today, this afternoon,
• 5:44
and those will be all going out this afternoon for the last few
• 5:46
weeks. Stuff and you'll be in your hand
• 5:48
in time for football season, which gets underway here next.
• 5:52
Week And Speaking of the chicken coop, remember all August long?
• 5:54
That's huge. Half price wings, the best wings
• 5:57
in town has voted by by city view and Miller endorsement,
• 6:00
Trent Condon endorsement. It is right there.
• 6:03
Great wings half off here through August now.
• 6:06
They extended it. It was only a July promotion,
• 6:08
but so popular it's going to last through last through
• 6:11
August. So I found the show last night.
• 6:12
Thanks to one of our listeners. JA Scott, I I didn't know that
• 6:16
the Kingdom was coming out. Did you know about it?
• 6:19
I remember hearing about it. Did we talk about it?
• 6:22
Was that the show that they wanted Taylor Swift to have a
• 6:24
role in and she declined? I don't remember that.
• 6:27
It wasn't that a talking point at some point last year anyways.
• 6:33
I just knew that, yes, there were cameras filing around.
• 6:35
There was going to be a documentary.
• 6:37
I remembered that part of it, but until I saw the same tweet
• 6:39
from J Scott last night, I didn't realize it was coming
• 6:42
  out. I I watched episode 1 last
• 6:44
night. You might be aware I'm not the
• 6:47
biggest chiefs fan shocker. Respect the hell out of them
• 6:51
don't root for them with any bone in my body.
• 6:54
He pains me to say that this team is as good as they are.
• 6:57
It was pretty good. It was pretty good.
• 6:59
You know why it was good A we know the part the all of them.
• 7:03
We know we follow the team. Mitch joins us everyday he's a
• 7:07
big part of it. Blair Kirkov has numerous
• 7:10
appearances in the show. So it's good to see people that
• 7:13
you know that we actually have on and no etcetera.
• 7:16
But just the story in the behind and and their quest to, you
• 7:19
know, become the first team to win back-to-back to back and
• 7:23
what what impressed me last night not yeah, it didn't
• 7:26
impress me because I didn't know the back story of how they got
• 7:30
to Kansas City. I knew they moved from Dallas to
• 7:33
  Kansas City. The old.
• 7:35
Texans. The old Texans, but I don't, I
• 7:37
did not know what was behind it. So Lamar Hunt, what's the what's
• 7:44
the the hunt now that owns it's Griff nuts Griffin.
• 7:47
It's not a weird name. It's Clark Hunt.
• 7:49
Clark Hunt is the face of them now.
• 7:56
You and I probably wouldn't have hung out with in college.
• 7:59
He doesn't look like he's the most fun dude.
• 8:01
Sure, right. But he's the richest dude, so
• 8:03
  maybe. We would have.
• 8:05
We would have found that out. Right.
• 8:07
But you know, regardless of his the fun he's had in his life or
• 8:10
not, he has pretty lot of fun because he owns the Super Bowl.
• 8:12
But just but his I guess it would be his grandfather.
• 8:17
You know, he saw the success of the NFL and this is in its
• 8:20
infancy and tried to get an expansion team and in Dallas
• 8:27
before the Cowboys. And they said, no, no, we're
• 8:31
good. We don't need any more teams,
• 8:32
we're good. But at this point there was
• 8:34
mostly an East Coast league with, you know, the, the, the
• 8:37
Giants and the, the, the Eagles and dot dot dot.
• 8:40
And then the two teams out West, the, the Niners and, and the
• 8:43
Rams and the old man, the Lamar Hunt, I got her name right.
• 8:48
Lamar Hunt said, oh the hell with you, I'm going to start my
• 8:52
own league. And they found 9 owners.
• 8:54
That's how the AFL. And that's how the AFL started,
• 8:57
and it started in Dallas. So you know what the NFL did?
• 9:00
Screw you. Put a team there, we're going.
• 9:02
To put an NFL team there and reading the writing on the
• 9:06
proverbial hall a wall rather, Hunt decided to move his team to
• 9:11
Kansas City and the rest is history.
• 9:12
And the merger would soon happen and we'd have AFC versus NFC and
• 9:16
we'd have the matriculating down the field and it's it was a
• 9:20
really I'm glad I watched it. Baseball was over at that point.
• 9:23
It was a light night of baseball.
• 9:25
The Braves had dispatched the Mets.
• 9:27
The Diamondbacks were kicking the crap out of the Rockies.
• 9:30
So I. Blowing a lead against the
• 9:31
Tigers. Yeah, I don't watch the end of
• 9:33
  that. God, just unbelievable.
• 9:35
Picked our thrown out at home and Phil drawn in just it's just
• 9:39
a well, you're going nowhere anyways, You may as well lose,
• 9:42
right? But glad I watched it.
• 9:44
Glad I was tipped off to it and obviously Taylor Swift is a big
• 9:49
part of it without being part of it.
• 9:51
Sure, right. The behind the scenes as to, you
• 9:53
know, how they're going to, you know, get the most famous person
• 9:56
in the world into the building, etcetera.
• 9:57
And is this real or not? And the people that you know
• 9:59
might MENA Kimes, this is this is just fabricated.
• 10:02
This is just it's really it was really good.
• 10:04
I'm glad I watched it. If you get a chance, I think you
• 10:06
should. Speaking of Taylor, did you
• 10:08
  watch outside of any? Clips.
• 10:09
No nothing. No, I'm not a big podcaster but
• 10:12
but it was hard. Like you click on one and you're
• 10:15
on that the. Algorithm gets you.
• 10:17
The algorithm gets what's it called?
• 10:18
It's not the for you. It's the whatever it is on
• 10:22
Twitter, you click, it's for you.
• 10:23
Is that what it is for you? Yeah, for you and following,
• 10:27
Right. So, so I click on one and I get
• 10:29
a million of them. It was really good.
• 10:31
It was so Tara was watching. The whole thing started at 6:00,
• 10:34
so I had to record a podcast of my own for the lockdown at 6:00
• 10:38
when I got back with Jack. And so she started up right
• 10:42
away, went upstairs, had dinner. She hit pause.
• 10:45
And then I'm doing things I had to like change the air filter in
• 10:48
the car. Had a couple of just errands
• 10:49
around the house that I'm running around with.
• 10:50
So you're pretty handy. Yeah, not.
• 10:52
  At all. Not at all.
• 10:54
I took a lot of I. Didn't know where the air filter
• 10:56
was. Well, YouTube goes a long way in
• 10:58
helping you figure out all of their point.
• 11:00
Yeah, yeah. Back in the old days, there was
• 11:01
no chance that was going to be happening.
• 11:02
But I'm. And every time I come back in
• 11:04
and she's she's still watching. The thing was a couple hours.
• 11:07
It wasn't. That long, It was that long.
• 11:09
And so I'd sit there and watch for 5 minutes.
• 11:11
Or what are they talking about now or anything interesting.
• 11:14
But she loved it as a huge Taylor Swift fan.
• 11:17
My daughter loved it as a Taylor Swift fan.
• 11:19
There were I think some entertaining parts about it, but
• 11:22
it's just so weird. And then you see the views.
• 11:24
I she pointed at one point, there's 1.4 million people
• 11:28
watching at that time that were watching that thing on YouTube,
• 11:32
watching it live. It just, it takes it to another
• 11:35
level. So from there, since we didn't
• 11:37
get a chance to talk about it yesterday, we got something
• 11:39
coming out next week. Speaking of documentaries, as
• 11:41
we're waiting for football, we are deep into.
• 11:44
Another football documentary. And this one I'm as excited
• 11:48
about, sight unseen. Bigger than the SEC the any
• 11:52
given Saturday. Bigger than that, more excited
• 11:55
about that and it's about this is exciting as I've been since
• 11:59
we go back to 2020 at MJ. Oh my God, last, never forget
• 12:02
that. This is, and that was for
• 12:03
different reasons. That's all we had.
• 12:06
This is about the 1990s Dallas Cowboys.
• 12:10
  Really. The White House How?
• 12:12
Do they get into the White House?
• 12:14
From a review that I was reading last night, they don't the the
• 12:18
Michael Irvin talks about everything, does he?
• 12:20
You want to talk about the hookers, You want to talk about
• 12:22
the blow, you're going to get it.
• 12:23
Plenty of both. Yeah, Michael Irvin is going to
• 12:26
talk about it. I read, then another review
• 12:29
afterwards. Heard incredible things on that
• 12:31
one. This is I mean Apex for me 90s.
• 12:36
Football. It just it, it felt like it was
• 12:38
the biggest thing. It was my age.
• 12:40
It was me becoming a sports fan at that kind of level, kind of
• 12:43
everything together. And I hated the Cowboys because
• 12:45
they were so good. And that would kind of take it
• 12:48
to another level. But the stories, the mystique,
• 12:51
all those things are all together.
• 12:54
One thing I also did here is maybe it's the first 5-10
• 12:57
minutes, a little bit slow. Getting out of the gate feels
• 12:59
like, oh, is this just going to be a Jerry Jones production?
• 13:02
After those first 10 minutes, though, it gets past that and it
• 13:05
becomes really, really good. So I wonder if there was ever a
• 13:08
way to measure this, and I'm guessing there isn't.
• 13:11
The 90s Cowboys versus the 86 Mets because they put the fun
• 13:18
meter in the red zone. They did that.
• 13:21
They did, yes. Doc Gooden and Strawberry and
• 13:24
even Keith Hernandez and Lenny Dykstra and dot dot dot.
• 13:29
Throwing firecrackers at people. So on, so on and so on and so
• 13:32
forth. This guys were they pushed the
• 13:34
boundaries. Now they really and truly did
• 13:37
it. And we know from listening to
• 13:38
the history of the Cowboys, they did as well.
• 13:41
So what? So what's this on?
• 13:43
Is it one of the? Netflix.
• 13:44
So it's another Netflix. It's a Netflix one.
• 13:46
It will be premiering I believe next Tuesday, August 19th.
• 13:49
  Is that next? Next Tuesday?
• 13:50
Let me bring up my calendar quick.
• 13:51
Yes, that is on Tuesday as it'll be premiered.
• 13:54
How many episodes do you know? Great question.
• 13:57
Let me see if I can find a little bit more about the
• 13:59
episodes and kind of the nuts and bolts about it.
• 14:01
I believe, I'm almost positive it's multiple, multiple episodes
• 14:05
though. Let's see how many episodes.
• 14:08
Let's see if anything pops up here.
• 14:10
What's a I got 10 episodes? Holy mackerel, how are we
• 14:13
supposed to get through that before the football season?
• 14:15
Well, it's the week zero, and then there's nothing until
• 14:17
Thursday. We're gonna have a busy week
• 14:19
  next. Week.
• 14:19
Yeah, it's. Real tough being us.
• 14:22
Watching really is. I can't wait.
• 14:25
Even as A10 parter, I am pumped up for this one.
• 14:29
And each about less than an hour I'm guessing.
• 14:31
I would think, yeah. Good stuff.
• 14:33
All right, I'm glad you glad you clued me in on that one, as I
• 14:37
was glad I was clued in on the Chiefs last night.
• 14:39
I guess two of them, two episodes came out last night.
• 14:41
I got through one, but I plan on, you know, getting back to
• 14:44
it. Did you see that we are retiring
• 14:47
an icon today? The news from Hawkeye Land.
• 14:50
Yes, Hawkeye, Elvis is hanging it up now, Is it?
• 14:53
Do you know what it's related to?
• 14:55
I read David Eichel's article about it.
• 14:57
Yeah, and it's not health. It's not because I thought there
• 15:00
was an issue there. He's just, he said he's slowing
• 15:02
down. So basically he just wrote
• 15:04
through kind of all his reasonings and more than
• 15:07
anything it's just that, well. Isn't isn't he located now in
• 15:10
San Francisco? Doesn't he live in California?
• 15:12
Well, he was in Minneapolis for the longest time, was he?
• 15:14
And yeah, I'm not. Sure where he is.
• 15:15
He's a California. Resident that's tough to pull
• 15:18
  off. You sure it is?
• 15:19
Even Minneapolis is difficult to pull off the the number of
• 15:22
  games. I saw him.
• 15:23
Remember seeing him at the Pentagon in South Dakota.
• 15:25
Do you? And when he did it there, yeah,
• 15:28
he was kind of like the Marlins man.
• 15:29
He is. He was all all over the place,
• 15:31
every football game obviously, and what he did, and it was
• 15:34
something that my kids always got a crack out of.
• 15:36
Did they? I mean a big smile.
• 15:37
He looked. The part I gotta give him
• 15:39
credit, man, he pulled it off. He did and put a lot of miles
• 15:42
  on. I didn't realize Freddy was a
• 15:44
bit based in Minnesota before he got.
• 15:46
I'm pretty sure he's in California now.
• 15:48
End of an era. So when did it start?
• 15:50
  Do you remember? When?
• 15:51
About 15 years ago. So it's been that long.
• 15:53
Yeah. So going back to 2010.
• 15:54
Do you know why he started? No.
• 15:57
Did the article I did. I saw the article I didn't read.
• 15:59
This and I'm only about halfway through.
• 16:00
OK. So yeah, that didn't get into
• 16:02
kind of the nuts and bolts of it just the beginning, I mean.
• 16:05
Did he, did he make a living being a fake Elvis prior to
• 16:08
  that? Did he working?
• 16:09
Oh, is it for the No, no, no. Now we know how he's able to
• 16:12
travel to. These gigs and yes in I'm
• 16:15
reading a skimming through here, he has moved to California a
• 16:17
couple years. Ago, that's what I thought,
• 16:18
that's what I. Thought one of my favorite
• 16:20
memories though is the picture when Iowa goes to Carolina with
• 16:24
Woodbury and Giselle. Giselle hits the late shot for
• 16:28
the only time in his career, and they're chest bumping and in the
• 16:33
background of the picture he has Elvis.
• 16:34
There's Hawkeye Elvis just screaming about as loud as both
• 16:38
of those guys were as he was seated underneath the basket.
• 16:40
That's still what have I. That's my favorite and what I
• 16:43
  think. Hawkeye, Elvis.
• 16:44
That's the image that always pops into my head.
• 16:45
No, that's good. Hopefully they'll come a time
• 16:48
when basketball games, you know, the that, that that portion of
• 16:52
the fan base, we're not looking at him.
• 16:54
We're actually looking at students doing something crazy
• 16:57
behind close to the floor, you know, as as it's long overdue
• 17:01
because I I guess that would be you know what, trying to find an
• 17:06
an example, an Iowa State related one.
• 17:09
What would it be a particular personality?
• 17:12
Cyclone Larry on Twitter. He's one, absolutely.
• 17:15
  X. But that's Mike in Waterloo.
• 17:18
Yeah, but I'm talking about it, yeah.
• 17:19
At the game. At the game, though.
• 17:22
I can't think of anything. I can't think of anything would
• 17:24
be, what do they call it, cyclone?
• 17:25
Well, we had the the Waldo guy, the Jim Carrey look alike.
• 17:29
Oh, that's yeah, yeah, yeah. That was short lived, though.
• 17:32
That was short lived. That's not bad.
• 17:33
He Yeah. Nobody's been able to stretch it
• 17:35
  like Hawkeye. Alps.
• 17:35
No, no, no, no. You're right.
• 17:37
You're right. The Jim Carrey thing.
• 17:39
And he kind of annoyed me. Like the kid umpire after a
• 17:42
  while. Yeah.
• 17:43
Went too far for it. He was seeking the camera.
• 17:45
Oh, gotcha. Yeah, the another one.
• 17:47
Remember, a couple years ago, there was a kid dressed up as
• 17:49
the Pope. He was in the Hawkeye student
• 17:51
section. And I think it was maybe just
• 17:54
  one game. That was it.
• 17:57
  Don't remember that. Yeah.
• 17:58
He was just up as a Pope. And he'd be, he had a Twitter
• 18:01
account then right afterwards, and I don't think he wore the
• 18:03
outfit again, or at least the TV cameras.
• 18:05
That that would be the thing, too.
• 18:06
You get seen once, all right, Then TV cameras start to pick
• 18:08
up. What if you get seen once and
• 18:10
you just keep wearing it and TV doesn't pick it up again?
• 18:13
Yeah. He's wearing a Pope outfit every
• 18:15
  game. Yeah, that.
• 18:16
That does sound very fun. Good stuff.
• 18:18
All right, underway on a Friday. We're going to talk to Eugene.
• 18:23
Repay covers Iowa State. Matt Campbell met the media
• 18:26
yesterday. We're going to be previewing a a
• 18:28
real game that's. Unbelievable, isn't it?
• 18:30
It's truly unbelievable. I I think August might fly by as
• 18:33
any as fast as any of the months.
• 18:34
I really do. Once you get to that point, it's
• 18:37
just like, whoa, whoa. And no, no, yeah, The fair ends
• 18:41
this week, right? And kids go back to school when
• 18:44
this is the 15th. Do they have another full week
• 18:46
at home? Yes, another full week at home
• 18:48
before things start, at least for us in West Des Moines on the
• 18:50
25th. 25th So they got 10 days left.
• 18:54
  All right, it's 1220 on a Friday.
• 18:57
  We'll take a break. We'll come back.
• 18:58
Eugene Repay, We're here from Mitch Holtis this hour. 4 of you
• 19:02
will get a chance to win some grub from the chicken coop this
• 19:05
hour. Lots to get to Miller and Condon
• 19:07
underway on a Friday. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
• 19:10
Network. I'm Mary Condon coming up on
• 19:22
12:30 on a Friday, the Iowa Sports Radio Network momentarily
• 19:27
Eugene repay from the Des Moines Register on Iowa State.
• 19:31
Mitch Holtis will hear his recorded piece as he sets the
• 19:35
scene for Chiefs in Seattle. And then four of you will get a
• 19:38
chance to win grub from the chicken coop Eugene Repay.
• 19:41
Des Moines Register joins us. Matt Campbell met the media
• 19:44
yesterday for the final time prior to headed to Double it
• 19:47
where Travis Hines will be on location covering for the
• 19:52
  register. Eugene Trenton.
• 19:53
Ken, thanks for coming on. How are you?
• 19:56
I'm great, I'm great. We're almost almost there, guys.
• 19:58
  Almost there until season kickoff.
• 20:00
Yeah, absolutely. Ready or not, here it comes,
• 20:02
right? You know what I want to start
• 20:04
with you is a guy that I forgot about really transferred in.
• 20:09
You know, we, we obviously the two receivers took our our
• 20:12
center stage when it comes to the to the need area of
• 20:16
replacing Higgins and Noel and obviously McDonough on the
• 20:19
defensive line going to play a big role.
• 20:21
What kind of camp did Trey Bell one of the corners?
• 20:23
  Is he a JUCO? I don't recall.
• 20:25
Regardless of of where he transferred him from.
• 20:29
What if? What kind of fall has Trey Bell
• 20:32
had and will Do you believe he's earned one of those starting
• 20:35
spots? Yeah, Trey Bell is a fascinating
• 20:39
player. He he came in from the FCS level
• 20:41
Lindenwood, where he was actually originally A2 sport
• 20:45
athlete committed to play both basketball and football before
• 20:49
deciding he actually loved football more, even though he's
• 20:51
primarily a Hooper and decided to go full time with it.
• 20:54
And and now here he is at Iowa State.
• 20:56
He's a guy that comes in with some athleticism, some length,
• 20:59
some speed. For him, the biggest adjustment
• 21:02
will be getting used to the the tempo and the physicality and
• 21:05
just the faster pace of play at the Big 12 and FBS level.
• 21:09
But so far the the reviews for him has been great since he came
• 21:12
in during the spring. They really lauded his his
• 21:15
smarts, his IQ and they felt like it'd only be a matter of
• 21:18
time for just got acclimated to the demands of the physicality
• 21:22
and the and the speed of the game.
• 21:24
And now here we are about what, like 5 months after he came in
• 21:28
or four or five months after he came in and he's just continued
• 21:31
to just draw a good praise. He's coming along well.
• 21:34
I think he's a guy that will definitely need to watch him and
• 21:36
him and Quentin Taylor Junior seem to be the the leading
• 21:39
candidates for that corner spot betting to go yeah as well.
• 21:43
But I I think Terry Bell's a guy that that they're high on and I
• 21:46
think we're going to have to get used to seeing him starting
• 21:49
alongside John, says Williams. They won't say exactly who it'll
• 21:52
be yet, but I think he's a guy that will definitely get a good
• 21:54
piece of the action this fall. You know, you can just mention
• 21:57
the transfers of one of them, Townsend.
• 21:59
I think we've been talking about so well, so much more than
• 22:01
Townsend, but something that was brought up that it was kind of
• 22:04
the back of my mind too is the return game and just how good he
• 22:06
was at Central Florida. That was a huge piece of last
• 22:10
year and a big conversation. You Jean, you're new, we're on
• 22:12
the beat. But for years and years under
• 22:14
Campbell, they struggled mightily in so many aspects of
• 22:17
special teams. Really felt like that that was
• 22:20
they they wrapped a bow on that one a year ago and getting
• 22:22
Townsend there to help out in returns feels like that's going
• 22:25
to go a long way as special teams being good again this
• 22:27
year. Yeah, Travis Hines showed me
• 22:30
some clips and and some low light plays on special teams and
• 22:33
and got to be up to speed on that front.
• 22:36
I know Jalen Noel was was great in in that regard.
• 22:40
And they want to use Townsend in a similar manner with the way
• 22:43
that they use Noel. Just a guy that can line up
• 22:45
almost anywhere on the field, but then also be a guy that can
• 22:49
help out on the return game. I think Townsend will help give
• 22:52
  that continuity. Sure.
• 22:54
Well, you know, we'll we'll have to see how it how it translates.
• 22:56
We haven't seen him yet in action, but they're very high on
• 23:00
him and just what he can provide was just that versatility and on
• 23:03
offense, but also just another returning threat that will help
• 23:06
out and and kind of take the torch from Jalen Noel.
• 23:09
I appreciate it, whoever it was in the media.
• 23:11
The first question that was posed to Coach Campbell
• 23:14
yesterday was regarding the new availability, the new injury
• 23:17
report, whatever you want to call it.
• 23:19
Seemed like he I, I don't know if he didn't want to answer it
• 23:23
or he was certainly wasn't comfortable in answering it.
• 23:26
What did you take away from his really his non answer?
• 23:29
And I think he said that he's just not up to speed on it.
• 23:32
And I'm paraphrasing up to speed on it enough to to comment it on
• 23:36
it at that point. I, I kind of found that strange.
• 23:38
That just kind of caught him off guard, seemingly.
• 23:42
Yeah, no, I think we've seen that that gamesmanship from
• 23:45
Campbell before where, you know, it's just never really a
• 23:49
straight up answer with how guys are feeling.
• 23:52
Are they actually going to be available?
• 23:53
Are they actually on the mend? Are they dead a day or are they
• 23:56
actually suffering through a more serious injury and it'll be
• 23:58
longer than that. I think that The thing is, is
• 24:01
everyone just curious from media to to fans and to coaches, you
• 24:06
know, what are the penalties, right?
• 24:08
You know, how strictly is it going to be enforced?
• 24:09
Is it actually going to be enforced?
• 24:11
When I saw the report come out about the the Big 12 move, I'm
• 24:14
like, this is great. But then also we've seen guys
• 24:17
like Bill Belichick in the NFL where everyone's questionable.
• 24:20
And what does that even mean? Like does that even actually
• 24:23
change anything? If if guys are just going to be
• 24:25
day-to-day or questionable? I think you know, what was it
• 24:28
for six or eight years Tom Brady was listed as day-to-day like
• 24:31
and we all know he played. So I, I would love to know what
• 24:35
exact, what the exact protocol is, what are the penalties and
• 24:39
and just how you know, is there still going to be an element of
• 24:42
gamesmanship from coaches or, or just how direct and how honest
• 24:45
and how forthcoming it'll be? One of the position groups we're
• 24:49
trying to figure out because of all the injuries last year and
• 24:51
now so many guys with experience is linebacker didn't feel like
• 24:55
Coach Campbell was quite ready to to even really give you a too
• 24:58
deep and how it looked. He mentioned seemingly every
• 25:00
single guy. What do you believe?
• 25:02
What? How is this thing going to
• 25:03
shake? Who are going to be the starters
• 25:04
at the linebacker group? Without, you know, they, they
• 25:08
keep the the doors closed for practices and scrimmages.
• 25:11
But my, my guess is that there will definitely be go to guys,
• 25:14
guys like Caleb Bacon, maybe a guy like Will McLaughlin, Carson
• 25:18
Willis or Caleb Rosina, and then you'll have guys that come in.
• 25:23
One thing that Colby Cratch and Campbell had talked about during
• 25:25
the offseason was figuring out guys strengths and specialties
• 25:29
and, you know, potentially utilizing different guys or
• 25:32
mixing guys in depending on the down and distance.
• 25:35
If you need someone who's maybe better pass coverage or someone
• 25:38
who's better as like blitzing on short yardage, maybe you'll put
• 25:42
those guys in. I think that they'll they
• 25:44
definitely have their their primary line.
• 25:47
But you know, I thought it was interesting.
• 25:49
Chavez hide asked. What are you going to lean on
• 25:52
certain people or is it going to be like hockey lineups where you
• 25:55
you just sub them in and sub them out?
• 25:57
So I think that they they got to have their go to guys, but I
• 26:01
wouldn't be surprised if they mix guys in and just have a
• 26:03
rotation and kind of keep all those mouths happy and then keep
• 26:06
everyone engaged in it. One of the guys that got a lot
• 26:10
of a lot of chatter is as this this August has been James Neal.
• 26:16
I wonder if his trajectory is similar to where Jalen Travis
• 26:20
was. Obviously Travis just got there,
• 26:22
played one year after coming from the Ivy League and turned
• 26:24
himself into fourth round pick. I wanna say you think with the
• 26:28
Colts? Yeah, and, and, and seemingly
• 26:32
listening to to Coach Campbell and to Clanton, Neil is, is
• 26:36
maybe following in those footsteps a little bit that
• 26:39
maybe, you know, that light bulb that that takes different
• 26:42
people, different lengths of time to come on.
• 26:45
It might be shining brightly for James Neil that he may have an
• 26:48
opportunity to continue playing football after his eligibility
• 26:52
expires this year. Yeah, One thing with James
• 26:55
O'Neill is he was primarily a basketball player growing up.
• 26:58
Didn't get into football until the senior season of high school
• 27:02
when friends would ask him, coaches would beg him to play.
• 27:04
And then finally, when I was senior of high school, he was
• 27:07
like, all right, you know, I'll give it a shot.
• 27:09
Let's let's go. Ends up helping his team win a
• 27:11
state title in Georgia, Goes the JUCO route.
• 27:14
And now here he is at Iowa State.
• 27:16
So this is only really his fifth or sixth year of playing
• 27:19
football and there's just so much room for him to grow.
• 27:23
Going into the spring football session, he talked about just
• 27:27
being overly hungry, getting that starting job back.
• 27:30
And so far it seems like he's his undying determination has
• 27:34
paid off. He's put in a lot of work this
• 27:37
offseason. Coach Clinton and Coach Campbell
• 27:40
have both been very, very high on on just the way that he
• 27:44
performed this fall and and through spring camp.
• 27:48
Coach Clinton called him the most improved player that he's
• 27:51
seen of anyone in the offseason. And so it sounds like this is a
• 27:55
guy that's going to be locking down that left tackle spot.
• 27:57
His athleticism, you know, he waited his time behind Jalen
• 28:02
Travis probably picked up a thing or two from him.
• 28:04
I think with him also playing a guard and tight end, that also
• 28:07
just helped his overall development as a player.
• 28:10
And now he's a guy that's looking to reclaim that full
• 28:12
time starting spot in 2025 as a senior.
• 28:16
Him and Tyler Miller just anchoring those tackle spots.
• 28:19
It should should be fun to watch.
• 28:21
And of course, the the interior line is still being worked out.
• 28:23
But when you have those two guys as a foundation, that should
• 28:26
vote for good. Thanks for the Cyclones.
• 28:28
Eugene, as you go into another year on the beat, where are your
• 28:32
expectations with this squad getting to know him as you have
• 28:34
here over the last year or so, where where do you see this team
• 28:38
at this point in time? Because, boy, it feels like the
• 28:40
variance can be very high for this Iowa State team.
• 28:43
Yeah, I think the ceiling can be very high.
• 28:46
You know, of course there you have to replace those those
• 28:49
studs wide receivers that are on the NFL and also the secondary
• 28:52
lost some great leaders and a couple of pieces are also now
• 28:55
playing on Sundays. I think with Iowa State, the
• 28:59
ceiling is very high, but also the floor is very high as well.
• 29:01
Like I think that this is a team that should win at least eight
• 29:04
games this this fall. You know, of course, 11 win
• 29:07
season and and everything I happened last year is just such
• 29:10
a big thing to follow. And the schedule is a little
• 29:12
tougher this year. But I still think that Iowa
• 29:14
State has a lot of pieces back. I think if the linebackers and
• 29:18
and just the new starters on defense, if that D line can
• 29:21
start to get more pressure on the quarterback, they should be
• 29:23
in good shape. You know, with the way that I I
• 29:26
see Iowa State, like people ask me if you had to guess like a
• 29:30
record, I have them at at 9:00 and 4:00 just kind of early,
• 29:34
early season, you know, without seeing any action.
• 29:37
I have them finishing nine and four and winning a bowl game.
• 29:40
But you know, which is which is good.
• 29:41
I think that they'll still be in the race with the Big 12.
• 29:44
Big 12 is just very wide open this year.
• 29:46
So we won't really know until the game start.
• 29:48
But I, I do see my, I do see Iowa State just kind of in the
• 29:52
mix in the run, in the running as one of the top five, six
• 29:56
teams. And, and just I think we'll
• 29:58
really like one of those what we saw last year where it really
• 30:01
came down to the last game of the season to see who gets into
• 30:03
those, the title game. Good stuff, Eugene.
• 30:06
Appreciate it. Eugene repay Des Moines
• 30:08
Register, desmoinesregister.com. Eugene covers Iowa State.
• 30:12
Thank you, bud. We'll talk to you in a few
• 30:13
  weeks. Appreciate Eugene.
• 30:14
  Thank you. Thank you guys.
• 30:16
Yeah, good to talk to you, Gene Repay, as we check in on Iowa
• 30:19
State. All right, we'll hear from Mitch
• 30:21
Holtis, the voice of the Kansas City Chiefs, his pregame
• 30:25
thoughts prior to Seattle and Kansas City tonight.
• 30:27
Miller and Condon, Iowa Sports Radio Network, 1245.
• 30:33
Welcome back, Miller and Condon on the Iowa Sports Radio
• 30:36
Network. We take you until 2 time to hear
• 30:41
from Mitch Holtis. This is a no no in radio talking
• 30:44
about two restaurants sponsored pieces in the same segment but
• 30:48
here we go. The first one is our friends at
• 30:51
Papa John's who make it possible for Mitch Holtis the voice of
• 30:55
the Kansas City Chiefs to join Trenton I every day during
• 30:58
Chiefs training camp normally joins us live as he will on
• 31:02
Monday, but they're in Seattle for their second pre season game
• 31:06
tonight. Mitch momentarily on what he
• 31:07
expects to see. Full stop. 21 right now.
• 31:12
First four callers at 515-284-5966. 515-284-5966 If
• 31:19
you have not participated in the chicken coop contest in the last
• 31:23
30 days and that was your opportunity to do so, we'll give
• 31:26
you 4 questions and a tie breaker.
• 31:28
You get the most right. You will get a $50.00 gift

• 31:38
51528459 and six, six. Again, if you participated in
• 31:42
the last 30 days, you are ineligible.
• 31:46
Here is Mitch Holtis, the voice of the Chiefs, on what he
• 31:48
expects to see tonight. Okay fellas, here's your
• 31:52
checklist for tonight's game. Yep, it's a game night and I
• 31:55
hope, Ken, you're wearing your game jersey in the hallway.
• 31:59
Same with you, Trent. But anyway, here's your
• 32:01
checklist going into the night's game against the Seattle
• 32:04
Seahawks. One who can keep the consistency
• 32:08
with the younger receivers, Jalen Royals, Taekwon Thornton
• 32:11
and Nico Ramijo. We're all good last week at
• 32:13
Arizona, but can they do it again against a good Seattle
• 32:16
  secondary? Remember, there's 14 wide
• 32:19
receivers in camp, but only 6 probably will make the 53 man
• 32:22
roster on Labor Day weekend. And receivers #5 and number
• 32:26
Dicks on that list must be special teams contributors.
• 32:30
We're going to talk about all that tonight.
• 32:32
The battle at running back will be influenced tonight.
• 32:34
Carson Steele is fighting to get a spot.
• 32:37
But can Elijah Mitchell, the free agent from the 49ers, show
• 32:40
a burst? Kareem Hunt probably won't play
• 32:42
tonight. He's got a minor quad injury.
• 32:44
Tight end. Can Robert Tonyon, the former
• 32:46
Packers star, can he become the new Blake Bell on this team?
• 32:50
Tonyon led the Chiefs in receiving last week at Arizona,
• 32:53
but can he do it again tonight? And then their second year tight
• 32:56
end, Jared Wiley. The seven rookies in the 2025
• 32:59
draft class are next on the list.
• 33:01
They all have left an impression in this camp and it last week at
• 33:05
Arizona, but can they do it again?
• 33:08
And the undrafted free agents, a guy like wide receiver Jason
• 33:10
Brownlee now especially Josh Simmons, will be under the
• 33:13
microscope again, expected to get more repetitions.
• 33:17
And then there's also the rookie defenders, cornerback Noel
• 33:20
Williams and defensive in Ashton Gelati.
• 33:23
And then finally, we're going to get into more detail on who's
• 33:25
going to play and who won't play tonight.
• 33:27
But expect a lot of snaps for Chiefs backup quarterback
• 33:30
Gardner Minshew. Those snaps will be valuable,
• 33:33
especially the snaps he gets with the number one offensive
• 33:36
line, because that gives you a real world laboratory.
• 33:39
If shudder to think Patrick Mahomes would get hurt during
• 33:43
the regular season. So there you go, there's your
• 33:45
checklist. It's the Chiefs and the Seahawks
• 33:48
in preseason game #2 and thanks to the folks at Donald's.
• 33:52
Far to the Donalds, as I should say, and Papa John's Pizza.
• 33:55
It's State Fair time. It's time for Papa John's Pizza
• 33:58
at papajohns.com. News specials are worked on in
• 34:02
the lab right now in Johnston. The Mitch Holtz is the voice of
• 34:06
the Kansas City Chiefs. What to watch for tonight as the
• 34:10
Chiefs take on Seattle in preseason game number two of
• 34:14
three. And they make some valid points,
• 34:16
  right? Obviously, Simmons, the
• 34:17
offensive line focal point, some of the receivers, there's so
• 34:21
many of them. You're going to have to do
• 34:22
multiple things to earn your spot.
• 34:24
Gardner, Mitchell, get his reps with the offensive line and #1
• 34:28
offensive line. Sounds to me like we won't see a
• 34:30
lot of #15 and not a real big surprise.
• 34:35
Again, if you missed it earlier, if you get a chance, if you're
• 34:37
on ESPN Plus or they're going to replay it again, I thought the
• 34:41
Kingdom, the special on the Kansas City Chiefs was a very
• 34:44
worthwhile watch. I saw episode one last night.
• 34:46
Going to get to the other one episode to at some point over
• 34:50
the weekend and just let this story unfold as as it may.
• 34:55
All right, Fort contestants going to participate in the
• 34:58
chicken coop giveaway. Again, the chicken coop
• 35:01

• 35:11
Oral Labor Rd. For all four of you, Jason,
• 35:14
John, Jay and Daniel, your tiebreaker gentleman is the
• 35:19
combined score of both NFL games tonight.
• 35:22
There are two NFL games tonight. You know, one of them, the
• 35:26
Chiefs in Seattle, the other one the Titans and the Falcons.
• 35:29
So we're going to put those together.
• 35:31
Combined score closest without going over is the tiebreaker.
• 35:35
Jason is up first. Hello, Jason.
• 35:38
  How are you? Good.
• 35:39
How are you guys? Doing well, The Padres and the

• 36:00
Well, if so, you're going to say yes.
• 36:02
Either one of those. You get them both.
• 36:03
Yeah, you get them both. Seattle is a 3 1/2 point
• 36:06
  favorite over the Chiefs tonight.
• 36:09
I'll take Seattle. Does Vladimir Guerrero junior
• 36:13
hit a home run tonight versus Texas?
• 36:16
Not bigger, but you know what, Jason?
• 36:18
This weekend, this weekend, three-game series against Texas.
• 36:22
Does he hit a home run this weekend?
• 36:24
  I'll say yes. OK.
• 36:25
And the tiebreaker? Four teams, two games combined.
• 36:30
Score closest without going over. 64.
• 36:35
Jason, have a good weekend, man. Thank you.
• 36:36
  You too. Thanks.
• 36:37
Appreciate it. John's with Miller and Condon.
• 36:40
Hi, John. John, are you there?
• 36:44
  Hey, how are you? Good.
• 36:46
  How are? You good?
• 36:47
Padres, Dodgers. Who wins this three-game series?
• 36:51
Will Owen Casey get a hit today or tomorrow?
• 36:54
Yeah, Seattle's a 3 1/2 point favorite over the Chiefs
• 36:57
  tonight. Go Chiefs.
• 37:00
Vladimir Guerrero. Does he hit a home run this
• 37:02
weekend? Yeah, I think he will.
• 37:06
  Combined score. Atlanta, Tennessee, Seattle,
• 37:09
Kansas City closest without going over.
• 37:14
  I'll say 67. Thanks, John.
• 37:16
  Have a good weekend. Yep.
• 37:19
Jay is with Miller and Condon. Hi, Jay.
• 37:21
  What are you doing? Good.
• 37:23
  Padres. Dodgers.
• 37:25
Who wins the three-game series? Padres.
• 37:28
Owen Casey. Will he get a hitter either
• 37:30
  today or tomorrow? I'm sorry.
• 37:33
One more time you broke up. No.
• 37:37
  I think that's a no. That's a no.
• 37:38
OK, Seattle gives 3 1/2 to Kansas City tonight.
• 37:43
I will take Kansas City. Does Vladimir Guerrero hit a
• 37:45
home run this weekend against Texas?
• 37:50
Think that was another no. That's another no.
• 37:52
Yeah, OK. That's OK Combined score closest
• 37:56
without going over the two NFL games tonight, Jay. 50. 353 I
• 38:01
  heard. All right.
• 38:03
Thank you, Jay. Have a good weekend, you.
• 38:05
  Bet you too. Thank you.
• 38:06
  Thank you. And Daniels next.
• 38:08
  Hi, Daniel. Howdy.
• 38:11
All right, Padres, Dodgers, three-game series.
• 38:13
  Who wins? Let's go, Dodgers.
• 38:16
Will Casey get a hit today or tomorrow?
• 38:19
Yes. Seattle gives 3 1/2 to the
• 38:22
  Chiefs tonight. Let's go Seattle.
• 38:26
Vladdy Junior home run this weekend against Texas.
• 38:31
Yes. Combined score the two NFL games
• 38:34
tonight closest without going over Daniel.
• 38:38
Let's go 51. 51 You have a good weekend, Daniel.
• 38:41
  Thank you. Thank you.
• 38:42
Appreciate it. Appreciate our good friends at
• 38:45
the Chicken Coop for making this promotion available each and
• 38:49
  every Friday. Any consensus?
• 38:52
No consensus this weekend. I was taking a peek though to
• 38:55
see what the odds are for the series this weekend with the
• 38:58
  Dodgers. What is it?
• 38:59
And the Padres? Take a take a guess, Padres.
• 39:01
Come into the weekend as a as the leader in the division, but
• 39:08
it's the Dodgers and they just, people just love to bet on them.
• 39:11
  What is it? -210.
• 39:13
That's crazy. Now it's also plus 160 on the
• 39:16
buy back. This is at DraftKings.
• 39:17
A $0.50 gap between the two. That's what you.
• 39:21
Get We wonder why Circle got a Missouri.
• 39:23
  Last year's. Example #1412. $0.50 gap between
• 39:28
  a series price. That's nuts.
• 39:30
Absolutely nuts. Who do you like?
• 39:34
At that price, the Padres, Yeah, I do too now.
• 39:36
King was supposed to start for them tonight.
• 39:38
Oh, he's not. No, he's back on the IL.
• 39:40
He made one start after being out since May.
• 39:43
And it's. Kershaw for the Dodgers tonight.
• 39:45
So I think they're going to go. Was it Vasquez, the guy that
• 39:48
they sent down when King got brought?
• 39:49
I think that's who it is. But yeah, Michael King, who was
• 39:52
so good the first six weeks of the year and I got hurt.
• 39:55
Then he comes back and now he's got a knee problem.
• 39:57
At least not another arm problem.
• 39:58
Yeah, I guess. But at plus 160 still I I.
• 40:01
At that price I would definitely be shopping on the pod.
• 40:04
Dylan sees versus Blake Snell tomorrow and then in the finale,
• 40:08
  Darvish Glass. Boy, that's good.
• 40:10
Darvish Glass now 310 Sunday afternoon Sunday Night Baseball,
• 40:13
Seattle at Mets. Love that that Seattle gets an
• 40:16
opportunity there. That is going to be the Little
• 40:18
League game though, isn't it? Oh, is that where it is?
• 40:20
I think this is that. Well, it's that.
• 40:22
Time of year seemingly, right? Yeah, that's going on.
• 40:24
  You're probably right. All right.
• 40:26
Great that the Mariners are in it though.
• 40:28
I'm I'm with you. Some new blood.
• 40:29
Yep, I'm with you. Hour 2 coming up next, Tom Caker
• 40:32
leads it off Mike Palm from Circus Sports, about 130 Trent's
• 40:35
plays of the day. Miller and Condon, thanks for
• 40:37
being with us. It's the Iowa Sports Radio
• 40:39
  Network.
