Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Please welcome everybody. My name is Daniel Ferson.
- 0:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:03Speaker 3: Here he is Daniel McPherson. Beast is available on stan
- 0:07Speaker 3: June four. He is starring in it, looking very ripped,
- 0:10Speaker 3: and he's joining us in the studio right now.
- 0:12Speaker 4: Hello, mate, was.
- 0:13Speaker 2: Twelve months ago. This is the body Fat's gone up.
- 0:15Speaker 2: I'm still look at it guard jeez.
- 0:18Speaker 3: So it's all about mma, right, I'm looking at a
- 0:21Speaker 3: photo here.
- 0:21Speaker 4: I mean, Jesus, how hard was that to do?
- 0:25Speaker 5: It?
- 0:25Speaker 4: Was?
- 0:25Speaker 2: It was one of the hardest things I've ever done
- 0:27Speaker 2: in my career, to be honest, and thankfully I had
- 0:31Speaker 2: three years to train for it. So I was given
- 0:32Speaker 2: the script way back in twenty twenty two when I
- 0:34Speaker 2: was doing a film with Russell up on the Gold Coast,
- 0:37Speaker 2: and for whatever reason, it kept falling out, and that
- 0:39Speaker 2: finance kept falling out of Russ's schedule kept changing, and
- 0:42Speaker 2: so I ended up thinking I had maybe six or
- 0:45Speaker 2: nine months initially get to get to get ready, and
- 0:46Speaker 2: I ended up having nearly three years. So I just
- 0:48Speaker 2: kept going and kept training and kept yeah, kept improving
- 0:52Speaker 2: over the.
- 0:52Speaker 5: Course of that three years. Because Dan I struggled to
- 0:55Speaker 5: just find the motivation to make it to the gym
- 0:57Speaker 5: once a week, Like, were there times where you faltered
- 1:00Speaker 5: or were you just like, I am going to be
- 1:02Speaker 5: half naked for a movie.
- 1:03Speaker 1: That's funny to figure it out.
- 1:05Speaker 2: Caffeine and vanity for two things that drive you know,
- 1:07Speaker 2: but also knowing that your bare naked bucket but is
- 1:10Speaker 2: going to be on screen for generations to come, you know.
- 1:13Speaker 2: So and also MMA has got such an incredible fan
- 1:17Speaker 2: base around the world.
- 1:18Speaker 1: You have to get it right.
- 1:19Speaker 2: The entire movie falls over if when someone throws a
- 1:22Speaker 2: punch it doesn't look legitimate.
- 1:24Speaker 1: So but mate, I went off into a theater in
- 1:26Speaker 1: the middle of that.
- 1:27Speaker 2: So in between that, I did a six month tour
- 1:29Speaker 2: with John Waters a Woman in Black through winter, you know,
- 1:32Speaker 2: one hundred and thirty shows. I mean, that's not conducive
- 1:35Speaker 2: to sleeping, to exhaustion to and also to staying in
- 1:39Speaker 2: fight shape. So I finished that Woman in Black tour
- 1:41Speaker 2: at the end of August and we started filming this
- 1:46Speaker 2: the end of November.
- 1:47Speaker 1: So that was a really quick quick turnaround.
- 1:48Speaker 6: But if you let yourself go now or is that
- 1:50Speaker 6: what you're saying.
- 1:51Speaker 2: I've ebbed and flowed, but I was I was in
- 1:53Speaker 2: pretty sharp shape by the time we got up to Thiland.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You know, we shot in front of ten thousand people
- 1:58Speaker 2: up there in Bangkok, Thailand, and at a real one championship. Yeah,
- 2:03Speaker 2: we shot at a real one championship event and in
- 2:05Speaker 2: Bangkok to film the sort of the end of the
- 2:08Speaker 2: crescendo of the film.
- 2:09Speaker 6: So, so could you fight anyone then?
- 2:11Speaker 1: I mean I could try. I don't know how how
- 2:15Speaker 1: would go.
- 2:15Speaker 2: But no, there's a huge step up even you know
- 2:18Speaker 2: from from where I got to to there's so many
- 2:22Speaker 2: great martial arts gyms in Sydney and around the country.
- 2:26Speaker 2: And then obviously you know MMA has taken off. But
- 2:28Speaker 2: Brent Foster, who plays my nemesis in the film, great actor,
- 2:33Speaker 2: but also multiple nine ten time world champion black belt
- 2:37Speaker 2: in I think four or five different martial arts himself,
- 2:40Speaker 2: came in and choreographed to fight against So I was
- 2:43Speaker 2: being elevated by the guys in the cage, you know.
- 2:47Speaker 5: I mean, you're no stranger to dancing when it comes
- 2:49Speaker 5: to the choreography of a fight scene. Dancing that kind
- 2:51Speaker 5: of thing, is it similar or no?
- 2:52Speaker 2: No, Well, there's a reason I hosted that show and
- 2:54Speaker 2: never danced on it because because I was terrifically bad.
- 2:58Speaker 2: But no, that that kind of rhythm and that that
- 3:00Speaker 2: kind of I'd probably be a better dancer now from
- 3:03Speaker 2: the fight.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Training that the thing went the other way around, you know.
- 3:06Speaker 2: So, But no, I had to had to learn all
- 3:08Speaker 2: that had to look authentic and then make it look entertaining.
- 3:10Speaker 2: And then and then when you finish there you turn
- 3:12Speaker 2: around and go have to act opposite Russell krutt Wells.
- 3:14Speaker 3: Another thing you acted in that, I know Georgie wants
- 3:18Speaker 3: to bring up when you.
- 3:19Speaker 5: I mean, I would like to say that I've achieved
- 3:21Speaker 5: quite a lot over the course of my life and career,
- 3:23Speaker 5: but I might give it all the way for one
- 3:25Speaker 5: day on the set of this television show.
- 3:30Speaker 4: The Bill.
- 3:31Speaker 6: Wow.
- 3:32Speaker 4: When I grew up, my parents always had this playing.
- 3:35Speaker 4: What was that ABC?
- 3:36Speaker 1: Like a thirty Saturday night?
- 3:39Speaker 5: Yeah, yes, and it just makes me so happy. And please, please,
- 3:48Speaker 5: You've been so generous with your time, but please just
- 3:50Speaker 5: entertain me here. What was that time in your life?
- 3:53Speaker 2: Like?
- 3:53Speaker 5: What was the set like?
- 3:54Speaker 1: It was amazing.
- 3:55Speaker 2: So I I was twenty one when I moved to London.
- 3:58Speaker 2: I just finished Neighbors. It was my second job. I
- 4:01Speaker 2: went I actually I went over to the musical theater.
- 4:03Speaker 2: So I toured God's Spell around the UK, and the
- 4:06Speaker 2: producer of Godspell's brother was the head of ITV Studios
- 4:11Speaker 2: casting in the UK. So listen, we've just we've just
- 4:13Speaker 2: blown up sun Hill. We've sacked twenty three actors and
- 4:16Speaker 2: we need a whole bunch of new faces because there's
- 4:18Speaker 2: these new producers.
- 4:19Speaker 4: Come in and Bobby.
- 4:20Speaker 2: So I went in and I was like, how can
- 4:22Speaker 2: this little pretty kid from Cronulla, from neighbors, you know, somehow,
- 4:26Speaker 2: somehow I end up in phill PC Taates Sierra Oscar
- 4:30Speaker 2: from three five five.
- 4:32Speaker 5: Ye.
- 4:35Speaker 2: They were so they were so gracious, they were so
- 4:37Speaker 2: we welcoming, and they had all like all the originals
- 4:39Speaker 2: like Judy he played True tru Trudy he played June
- 4:43Speaker 2: Sorry Stroke on live radio, and Graham Cole and Des
- 4:49Speaker 2: and all those great characters. They'd done a show out
- 4:52Speaker 2: on Bondo Beach, so that had just done. They've done
- 4:55Speaker 2: a couple of episodes in Australia. They all loved Australia.
- 4:57Speaker 2: So there was just so welcoming. So I was twenty
- 5:00Speaker 2: on twenty two living in London earning pounds when it.
- 5:02Speaker 4: Was a big star.
- 5:06Speaker 3: So like Alec the Pom. Do you recognize Daniel from
- 5:09Speaker 3: the bill.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, I'm very starstruck.
- 5:13Speaker 3: You do the two way thing when they say Siera
- 5:17Speaker 3: Oscar receives.
- 5:18Speaker 2: Five over Oscar two five six receiving over copy that.
- 5:23Speaker 6: Yeah, it's pretty good.
- 5:26Speaker 1: There's probably four when it was on television.
- 5:28Speaker 5: Ye, it's the impact that you have, the lasting legacy.
- 5:32Speaker 4: All right, we're going to take your calls.
- 5:34Speaker 3: Anything you want to ask Daniel McPherson, give us a call.
- 5:37Speaker 3: Thirteen one oh sixty five more coming up with him
- 5:39Speaker 3: right here on Kiss j Yeah, you're on Kiss. You
- 5:47Speaker 3: got my key, You've got Brooklyn, you got Georgie Tallony.
- 5:49Speaker 3: Hang it out, Daniel McPherson.
- 5:52Speaker 1: Good morning, stuck there as well.
- 5:54Speaker 3: We are beast available on stand June four. You look bloody,
- 5:58Speaker 3: ripped in it made. We're getting people calling in there.
- 6:00Speaker 6: I want to have a chat to here on thirteen
- 6:02Speaker 6: six five.
- 6:03Speaker 4: Here we go, Chloe, Hello, Hi, guys, Hi, what do
- 6:07Speaker 4: you want to Chloe?
- 6:10Speaker 5: Daniel? Obviously, Neighbors was a long time ago.
- 6:13Speaker 3: I was just wondering, do you keep in touch with
- 6:15Speaker 3: anyone from the show.
- 6:16Speaker 2: Oh, Neighbors was a long time ago. That was February
- 6:20Speaker 2: nineteen ninety eight was when I started down there. I yes,
- 6:24Speaker 2: I got a really nice message from Brooks Satchwell the
- 6:27Speaker 2: other day after.
- 6:27Speaker 1: Seeing Beast, which was cool. Who was in that? Like
- 6:31Speaker 1: my era?
- 6:32Speaker 2: Just into Stapleton and keep in touch with Jesse Spencer.
- 6:35Speaker 1: I saw it over in Chicago a little bit. Oh
- 6:37Speaker 1: my god, I loved him on him nod bless Yeah.
- 6:41Speaker 4: Right, how did you feel when it wrapped up?
- 6:43Speaker 6: Were you involved in the hang on they did too?
- 6:45Speaker 4: Well?
- 6:45Speaker 1: Yeah, I felt a short change.
- 6:47Speaker 2: I had this incredible like outpouring on Twitter when it
- 6:51Speaker 2: was still Twitter, and hey, what that show did for me?
- 6:53Speaker 1: And it meant to me in those years.
- 6:54Speaker 2: And I went back and I did the finale with
- 6:56Speaker 2: Tody and everybody, and then.
- 6:58Speaker 1: You know, we watched it go to air. Oh and
- 7:01Speaker 1: we sort of all walked away from the sunset. Wasn't
- 7:03Speaker 1: that amazing sake? Coming back? Yeah?
- 7:08Speaker 4: Well, let's go on again. Well I serves him, right, Hey,
- 7:12Speaker 4: Lauren's got a question. Hello Lauren, Hi guys, Hi dad, Lauren.
- 7:17Speaker 5: So my question is you're obviously a dud to a
- 7:21Speaker 5: really young boy. Do you think that your transformation in
- 7:26Speaker 5: Beast scared him? Oh?
- 7:28Speaker 6: Like physically.
- 7:29Speaker 1: Yeah, my son.
- 7:30Speaker 2: My son is six and a half now Austin, and
- 7:34Speaker 2: you know he started watching me train for that when
- 7:36Speaker 2: he was three years old. Did it scare him, Yeah,
- 7:39Speaker 2: it's some of some of the stuff in the film
- 7:40Speaker 2: is probably not not.
- 7:44Speaker 1: For for a six year old little brain.
- 7:45Speaker 2: But what he did do was watch me train and
- 7:47Speaker 2: box and fight, so that he has now started kids
- 7:50Speaker 2: MMA class, so he does a little bit of jiu
- 7:52Speaker 2: jitsu and a little bit a bit of a bit
- 7:53Speaker 2: of boxing and with a bunch of other kids his age,
- 7:56Speaker 2: and it's I'm so glad he did, and I'm so glad.
- 7:58Speaker 1: I'm so glad that he was able.
- 7:59Speaker 2: To watch me as a living example of training, of
- 8:02Speaker 2: exercising and of committing to something and he'll get to
- 8:04Speaker 2: watch that for the rest of his life.
- 8:05Speaker 5: Question without notice on that, because obviously sometimes MMA can
- 8:08Speaker 5: get a really bad rap in terms of masculinitymasically, role models,
- 8:12Speaker 5: et cetera, et cetera. You say it's a great thing
- 8:14Speaker 5: for your son, while.
- 8:17Speaker 2: Obviously structured discipline, and particularly anyone who's got a five
- 8:20Speaker 2: or six year old, all they want to do is
- 8:21Speaker 2: run around, scream, wrestle. They're so physical they're getting understand Yeah,
- 8:25Speaker 2: energy there, so there's a discipline to it. But also
- 8:27Speaker 2: they're growing up in an era, in an age that
- 8:29Speaker 2: I didn't grow up in, which is MMA UFC. Everything
- 8:33Speaker 2: is available twenty four to seven in the palm of
- 8:36Speaker 2: people's hands, It's on screens everywhere. There's a reason Alex
- 8:39Speaker 2: Volkovski is going to be one of the most recognizable
- 8:41Speaker 2: famous faces we have in sports in Australia. So I
- 8:45Speaker 2: believe that this next generation of children has to have
- 8:47Speaker 2: an understanding of physicality and of some sort of martial
- 8:50Speaker 2: arts and understand that the physicality of that kind of
- 8:53Speaker 2: world discipline totally rid.
- 8:56Speaker 4: Here's Sophie. Hello, you're on with Daniel. What do you
- 8:58Speaker 4: want to ask? Hi?
- 9:00Speaker 6: Daniel okay, So must have done a lot of training
- 9:04Speaker 6: in the lead up to the movie.
- 9:06Speaker 5: Did you get any injury?
- 9:09Speaker 1: I did? I did, George Burgess, we were just talking about.
- 9:12Speaker 2: I mean, I broke a lot of them were a
- 9:15Speaker 2: lot of my own fault, Like I was supposed to
- 9:16Speaker 2: have my hands in certain places, like you know, covering
- 9:18Speaker 2: my face, and when they weren't there, I would get
- 9:21Speaker 2: cracked in the.
- 9:21Speaker 1: Nose or things like that. So I did. I did
- 9:24Speaker 1: kind of snap my nose in the octagon in Thailand.
- 9:26Speaker 4: But the worst, yeah, I'll show you.
- 9:28Speaker 2: The photos and then but the best one was I
- 9:31Speaker 2: tore my adductor off the my off the bone in
- 9:34Speaker 2: the octagon with the phone. So I turned forty six
- 9:38Speaker 2: on ans a day, just gone. My body doesn't quite
- 9:40Speaker 2: heal as well as it used to in my younger
- 9:42Speaker 2: dancing days. And so yeah, that was probably the best one.
- 9:46Speaker 1: That was. That's been fourteen months of rehab.
- 9:48Speaker 5: When you say you like cracked your nose, right, how
- 9:52Speaker 5: many film execs come running to you and go, oh God,
- 9:57Speaker 5: are you okay?
- 9:58Speaker 2: Where's the insurance? If that was film me, if that
- 10:01Speaker 2: was kind of studio world or network world, you know,
- 10:03Speaker 2: I was working one of the TV networks where I
- 10:05Speaker 2: used to work. But in independent film, it's like everything
- 10:08Speaker 2: goes and it's a fight movie and everyone's and literally
- 10:10Speaker 2: in that moment, i'ment oh shit, and I've walked away,
- 10:13Speaker 2: I've straightened my nose, back up, jump back in, all right,
- 10:15Speaker 2: let's go again. And so that's what I love about
- 10:18Speaker 2: where I'm in my career at the moment. There's a
- 10:20Speaker 2: real freedom and independence to independent film. Hence the name,
- 10:24Speaker 2: and you know, you really just get to dive in
- 10:26Speaker 2: and do some cool stuff and you know, thanks to
- 10:29Speaker 2: people like Stam, we get to show it to the
- 10:31Speaker 2: entire country.
- 10:32Speaker 3: Well and if you want to watch it, it's going
- 10:33Speaker 3: to be available on stand June fourth, so not long
- 10:37Speaker 3: to go to go and check out bet.
- 10:39Speaker 6: Daniel McPherson, thank you so much for comingy that.
- 10:41Speaker 1: It's an absolute pleasure. Great to see you, legend.
- 10:43Speaker 4: All right, hit a celebrity gossip coming up for you.
- 10:46Speaker 3: Your final calls as well, thirteen one oh six five
- 10:49Speaker 3: if you want to call us up.
