- 0:46Speaker 3: Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
- 0:47Speaker 4: This is Carl Ly with Let's Talk, and I have
- 0:50Speaker 4: my co hosts, both of them in the building today,
- 0:53Speaker 4: Lisa Odie and Hollis Lewis, Hello, Hello and uh we.
- 1:00Speaker 4: Today has been one of those days when there's there's
- 1:03Speaker 4: so many different types of topics in it all over
- 1:06Speaker 4: the place, and we've been trying to figure out exactly
- 1:09Speaker 4: where we were going to go and so but the
- 1:12Speaker 4: first one that I think that I thought was really
- 1:15Speaker 4: really interesting was the situation with Rich Rodd at WVU.
- 1:20Speaker 4: They've actually have fifty nine new players now that's a lot.
- 1:28Speaker 3: That's a team. I mean, that's basically a team, you know.
- 1:33Speaker 4: And and my and my question in that is.
- 1:39Speaker 5: Is that isn't that the most Hollis and Division one
- 1:41Speaker 5: was that crazy?
- 1:42Speaker 2: Right now?
- 1:42Speaker 3: Yeah? Right now? Yeah, that's that's the top. Yeah, have you?
- 1:48Speaker 3: Are you changing? Are you?
- 1:50Speaker 4: My thing to that is, let's say that the old
- 1:53Speaker 4: WVU was doing this type of defense, this type of offense,
- 1:57Speaker 4: and the players that I have and the offense in
- 2:00Speaker 4: the defense that I'm going to do, maybe they don't
- 2:03Speaker 4: fit it. But I don't even think it's a matter
- 2:06Speaker 4: whether they fit it or not. I think this is
- 2:08Speaker 4: just the reality of what and again we beat the
- 2:11Speaker 4: subject up to death, but this is the reality of
- 2:13Speaker 4: college sports. Bobby Hurley coach at Connecticut. I think they
- 2:18Speaker 4: won a championship last year. He's going to fifty. His
- 2:22Speaker 4: team is going to be different.
- 2:24Speaker 3: You know.
- 2:24Speaker 4: I was watching an interview where he was saying that,
- 2:27Speaker 4: and if like, you're a new coach, and he was
- 2:28Speaker 4: a head coach somewhere else, you're going to bring other
- 2:31Speaker 4: players with you. So it's going to be whether regardless
- 2:33Speaker 4: of whether it's new system, same system, the reality is
- 2:37Speaker 4: if you get a new coach, go ahead and get
- 2:39Speaker 4: prepared to get a new team.
- 2:40Speaker 5: And that's pretty much been historically true, right, I mean degree, not.
- 2:45Speaker 3: To this degree, I think.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I think what you would do is you go out
- 2:49Speaker 4: and you look for the players or position players that
- 2:53Speaker 4: you needed and feel them. You're not like or you
- 2:56Speaker 4: might bring your quarterback, your center, your line. Yeah, but
- 2:59Speaker 4: I mean fifty nine is like office defense specialty.
- 3:03Speaker 6: You know now that you said that they would have
- 3:06Speaker 6: to sit out a year right if they were. So
- 3:09Speaker 6: that's why it didn't happen quite a true.
- 3:11Speaker 4: I mean, and then you got Arizona at fifty three,
- 3:13Speaker 4: you got Mississippi State at fifty one. So the top three,
- 3:16Speaker 4: I mean, you're talking about fifty and nobody is under
- 3:19Speaker 4: forty five. I shouldn't say an nobody's but of the
- 3:23Speaker 4: top teams, nobody the least amount of players that they've
- 3:28Speaker 4: that they have replaced brought in forty five.
- 3:32Speaker 3: That's wow.
- 3:33Speaker 4: Man.
- 3:33Speaker 6: Now, I wonder how many of those teams have a
- 3:35Speaker 6: new head coach besides WVU.
- 3:37Speaker 5: That would be interesting.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I'm sure, I'm sure there's something that there's got to
- 3:41Speaker 4: be a few of them. Sure, But even at that, man,
- 3:45Speaker 4: I mean you know, you're just getting ready to start
- 3:47Speaker 4: spring ball. I mean, because you look at like North
- 3:49Speaker 4: Carolina has a new coach. Obviously WVU has a new coach.
- 3:55Speaker 4: I'm thinking Arkansas may have a new coach.
- 3:58Speaker 5: And they're they're in that lineup right with I.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Said, if you get it, like I said, it's almost
- 4:03Speaker 4: a guarantee if you get a new coach in college football.
- 4:05Speaker 4: To ask that college sports today, particularly basketball football, you're
- 4:10Speaker 4: gonna have a new squad and go ahead.
- 4:15Speaker 3: So you're saying that, and I think that's true.
- 4:20Speaker 4: My question, Lisa is, so when my coach leaves, do
- 4:26Speaker 4: I need to start thinking about where?
- 4:28Speaker 3: Where am I gonna pack my bags? How I'm gonna
- 4:30Speaker 3: pack my bags?
- 4:31Speaker 4: Because because I'm either gonna get sent or I'm gonna leave,
- 4:35Speaker 4: Am I right?
- 4:36Speaker 3: I mean?
- 4:36Speaker 6: I mean, I mean yes, fundamentally, either you're gonna sit
- 4:41Speaker 6: or you're gonna leave. But also I think too, not
- 4:43Speaker 6: only you have to look at whether you're a philosophy's
- 4:45Speaker 6: lineup with the same coach because what the rules were
- 4:48Speaker 6: and what the you know, the expectations were of the
- 4:51Speaker 6: former coach may not be the same as the new
- 4:54Speaker 6: one coming in. So you got to make sure you're
- 4:55Speaker 6: ready for that too, because already rich Rod's had some
- 4:58Speaker 6: things out there and so media that he's he's made
- 5:01Speaker 6: some changes and they're and they're they're I mean, they're
- 5:04Speaker 6: pretty they're pretty out there. He's pretty pretty.
- 5:07Speaker 3: TikTok dances. Yeah, I'm gonna say, do you want to?
- 5:10Speaker 3: You want to? Got to read it out.
- 5:11Speaker 4: A little piece of that, you know, that's that's Yeah,
- 5:14Speaker 4: the one I know is TikTok dances, and that's big.
- 5:17Speaker 4: You know, That's what players do, That's what young kids do.
- 5:19Speaker 4: That's what young people do. Yeah, you know what I'm saying.
- 5:22Speaker 4: So again, I think that's one he'll probably eventually lose.
- 5:26Speaker 3: You think you'll lose that.
- 5:27Speaker 4: You're gonna lose that one eventually. That's just what they
- 5:30Speaker 4: do now, you know, that's part of who they are.
- 5:33Speaker 6: Yeah, for sure, You're right, that's all. That's what kids do,
- 5:36Speaker 6: adults for that matter.
- 5:38Speaker 4: Let me ask a question, Lisa, do you think far
- 5:41Speaker 4: as the movement of college football, do you think it's
- 5:44Speaker 4: anything other than for the sake of movement. Do you think,
- 5:48Speaker 4: like now, kids aren't necessarily looking at I mean, I
- 5:52Speaker 4: guess they would consider philosophy and playing time and all
- 5:54Speaker 4: these other factors. But do you think some of it
- 5:57Speaker 4: is just saying, hey, I've been here two years, this
- 5:59Speaker 4: is time to go some where else. I want to
- 6:00Speaker 4: try something else just for the sake of doing it.
- 6:02Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:02Speaker 6: Sure, I mean they've got a they've got a passport
- 6:04Speaker 6: to go wherever they want, whenever they want.
- 6:08Speaker 5: I mean pretty much.
- 6:09Speaker 6: I mean, so you know, if they if they think
- 6:10Speaker 6: that the pastors are greener somewhere else, why not go
- 6:13Speaker 6: try it up.
- 6:13Speaker 4: Well, do you think it's even a matter of pastors
- 6:15Speaker 4: green and somewhere else, or you're just moving just because
- 6:18Speaker 4: I just want I just want to go somewhere, Like
- 6:20Speaker 4: I literally think, like I've heard like Kevin Durant say
- 6:23Speaker 4: something similar where he's just like basically, I'm just going
- 6:26Speaker 4: other places just to try it all. I just think
- 6:28Speaker 4: I personally think that they there's a there's a there's
- 6:31Speaker 4: an idea of all. Right, I was here, I know
- 6:36Speaker 4: exactly what it is, what's happening here. Now, let me
- 6:41Speaker 4: see if I can go somewhere else, regardless of whether
- 6:45Speaker 4: or not I had success or failure where my original
- 6:50Speaker 4: home is. I have to put my name out there
- 6:54Speaker 4: because I think I can go somewhere else and maybe
- 6:58Speaker 4: it's just better. And I just don't under like, I
- 7:01Speaker 4: don't I don't understand that.
- 7:05Speaker 3: See I understand it. I don't like it, but I said,
- 7:08Speaker 3: I get it.
- 7:09Speaker 4: It's just I think far as the continuity of you know,
- 7:12Speaker 4: what we've known is like college sports has changed, and
- 7:15Speaker 4: it's it's hard to keep up, you know what I mean,
- 7:18Speaker 4: It's hard to keep up because when you don't have
- 7:20Speaker 4: this guy I was thinking about, like a guy like
- 7:21Speaker 4: Tim Duncan, right, he was just he probably could have
- 7:24Speaker 4: left after his freshman year, but he stayed at Wake
- 7:27Speaker 4: Forest for like four years and it was a staple
- 7:29Speaker 4: and you knew he was going to be there. And
- 7:31Speaker 4: I just don't know if you're going to have like
- 7:32Speaker 4: those type of guys like moving forward, you know, any longer.
- 7:36Speaker 3: And I think that's why, you know, even like kind
- 7:38Speaker 3: of the law of like college.
- 7:39Speaker 4: Sports for women is going to grow if they can
- 7:43Speaker 4: sort of maintain the continuity that doesn't exist in men's sports.
- 7:47Speaker 3: In that good point, I really hope.
- 7:49Speaker 4: That the women women's sports, they don't they don't open
- 7:53Speaker 4: that door. I just think that it's just so inviting
- 7:57Speaker 4: and it's and sometimes it's it's for your ego. I'm
- 8:00Speaker 4: going to get out there and see who's all out there.
- 8:03Speaker 4: It's likely who wants me, who wants me, you know,
- 8:06Speaker 4: and not appreciative of who's got you already. You know
- 8:11Speaker 4: what I'm saying, Because there's some appreciation that you have
- 8:15Speaker 4: to give to a place that you played, you produced,
- 8:19Speaker 4: they appreciated you, they cheered for you, and now you're
- 8:23Speaker 4: just up and leaving solely because I want to see
- 8:27Speaker 4: what's out there.
- 8:28Speaker 6: Yeah, and I think to it also depends on the
- 8:30Speaker 6: skill set of the player, like some players are. Just
- 8:33Speaker 6: if you're at that elite level excuse me that you
- 8:35Speaker 6: know you're playing and you want better nil, then you're
- 8:39Speaker 6: going to be more specific about where you're going. Your
- 8:41Speaker 6: passport's going to be a little more limited. Whereas if
- 8:43Speaker 6: you're just a player that you know, you're just out
- 8:45Speaker 6: there having a good time and want to see what
- 8:47Speaker 6: things are about, you're just going to go out there.
- 8:48Speaker 3: And I totally agree with that.
- 8:52Speaker 4: But there's been players who have jumped out there into
- 8:55Speaker 4: the portal and not getting hit. Yes, a lot, you know,
- 9:00Speaker 4: there's a lot of them because because again you got it,
- 9:05Speaker 4: you gotta have had you gotta have body of work,
- 9:09Speaker 4: you know, to get it to get in the pot.
- 9:10Speaker 4: You can't say well, because I wasn't playing. I was
- 9:13Speaker 4: sitting behind Hollis. I'm just gonna jump into the portal
- 9:16Speaker 4: and hope somebody's gonna get me. Dude, you ain't got
- 9:18Speaker 4: no film. We don't know nothing about you. Why Yeah,
- 9:23Speaker 4: And like, and we're about to have some guests on
- 9:26Speaker 4: here in a couple of minutes, and I just want
- 9:27Speaker 4: to give a little opening. Uh, We're gonna talk to
- 9:30Speaker 4: some track athletes and and and I'm all right, and
- 9:33Speaker 4: I want to know and I know like you ran
- 9:36Speaker 4: track in college, you ran track in high school. And
- 9:42Speaker 4: I think it's one of those things where we're starting
- 9:44Speaker 4: to slowly get back to track because I think particularly
- 9:47Speaker 4: for football players and just athletes in general, we're seeing
- 9:50Speaker 4: the importance of it. So I think we gotta we
- 9:52Speaker 4: gotta guess on the line.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Can you hear me? All right?
- 9:57Speaker 4: Uh? And this is a coach for West Virginia State
- 10:01Speaker 4: University track team. Now, brother, how you say your last name?
- 10:05Speaker 4: We took three of us. We think we got Yeah,
- 10:12Speaker 4: it's John boys.
- 10:14Speaker 7: Boys.
- 10:21Speaker 4: I think I got the first part right, But so
- 10:25Speaker 4: so just tell us a little bit about yourself. Like
- 10:28Speaker 4: I mentioned you the track coach at the West Virginia
- 10:31Speaker 4: State University. The track team both men and women, have
- 10:34Speaker 4: seen some pretty historical success over the last two seasons
- 10:37Speaker 4: for an upstart program. So kind of what's your background coach?
- 10:42Speaker 7: Oh, for sure, Yeah, you can't forget cross country as well.
- 10:46Speaker 7: We do have cross country. But my background is I'm
- 10:49Speaker 7: originally from Harford, Connecticut. You know, I went to school
- 10:53Speaker 7: in Connecticut. My mom worked in the court system. My
- 10:57Speaker 7: dad worked as he worked for elevated selles, elevated parts
- 11:01Speaker 7: and things like that. But my background really I was
- 11:04Speaker 7: a multi sport athlete Boston soccer and track and field,
- 11:08Speaker 7: a little bit of football. But I got a bachelor's
- 11:11Speaker 7: degree in sports education and kinesiology and a master's degree
- 11:15Speaker 7: in health administration. I got my master by the time
- 11:19Speaker 7: I was twenty one. But just my work, ethic and everything,
- 11:23Speaker 7: I owe it to my parents and my grandmother, where
- 11:27Speaker 7: we just taught that we always got to come to
- 11:30Speaker 7: the table with half right. So when I took over
- 11:34Speaker 7: this program at West Virginia State, I've seen a gold mine.
- 11:38Speaker 7: In my opinion. I had about maybe ten other job offers.
- 11:41Speaker 7: But I've seen locations, I've seen how close you were
- 11:44Speaker 7: to ideal cities and things like that, and I knew
- 11:48Speaker 7: if it was built right that it would sell and
- 11:51Speaker 7: be marketable.
- 11:53Speaker 4: Now, where were you at prior to prior to coming
- 11:56Speaker 4: to Stay? Where was your coaching jobs before that?
- 12:00Speaker 7: I see, that's interesting. So my first coaching job was
- 12:04Speaker 7: a graduate assistant position at Regis's College. I graduated college
- 12:10Speaker 7: undergrad and then I went to Canada for a year
- 12:13Speaker 7: to run pro but my time in Canada. Within six
- 12:17Speaker 7: months in Canada, I got a phone call to do
- 12:20Speaker 7: a free master's degree as a graduate assistant. So I
- 12:23Speaker 7: took that opportunity because I knew there wasn't many opportunities
- 12:27Speaker 7: to get a free master's degree, especially at a school
- 12:29Speaker 7: like Regi's College when it's around sixty to seventy thousand.
- 12:32Speaker 6: Dollars a year.
- 12:33Speaker 3: Wow.
- 12:34Speaker 7: So that from there, graduating from there, I brought that
- 12:37Speaker 7: program they first All American and nationals with Fatima Saint Hilaire,
- 12:42Speaker 7: and we won the conference on the many and women's
- 12:45Speaker 7: side two years straight that I was there and broke
- 12:47Speaker 7: every school record multiple times. So from there, I went
- 12:50Speaker 7: to Utica College in Upstate, New York and I was
- 12:53Speaker 7: under Jim Lemu as an assistant coach now and went
- 12:58Speaker 7: there and we broke almost every school record and we
- 13:00Speaker 7: took I think six kids to nationals as well. But
- 13:05Speaker 7: our mentored My mentors have been Harvard and Keppa at
- 13:09Speaker 7: Harvard as well. And then I went to LESA McCrae
- 13:12Speaker 7: in North Carolina and uh we we brought them their
- 13:16Speaker 7: first All American indoors along with two other three national
- 13:20Speaker 7: qualifiers as well. Then I went to Post University and
- 13:26Speaker 7: I took a program in Connecticut. It was close to
- 13:29Speaker 7: their home, and I thought it was monkling, you know
- 13:32Speaker 7: what I mean, But you know, God reminded me, like, nah,
- 13:35Speaker 7: it's so they they announced it like it within three
- 13:39Speaker 7: months to take a job. They pulled me into the
- 13:41Speaker 7: office and they go, hey, we're gonna cut the track program,
- 13:44Speaker 7: but we're gonna keep it online. You could keep the pay,
- 13:47Speaker 7: but we don't want you to bring anybody else in.
- 13:51Speaker 7: And I made the decision to leave. I said, you
- 13:54Speaker 7: know what, I'm gonna leave. I did a lot of
- 13:55Speaker 7: interviewing at a few schools and I took the job
- 13:59Speaker 7: at Jinia State University. I do have some family members
- 14:02Speaker 7: that graduated from there, and it just seemed like the
- 14:06Speaker 7: right thing to do at the time.
- 14:08Speaker 3: I'm glad you took it.
- 14:09Speaker 4: Yes, sir, Hey, So this is Curlee Man and I
- 14:12Speaker 4: coached football there and I've always thought that football athletes
- 14:18Speaker 4: should run track. You ain't never told me that because
- 14:21Speaker 4: you couldn't.
- 14:23Speaker 3: I hear, yeah, So ignoring him.
- 14:32Speaker 4: So one of one of the interesting things that I'm
- 14:35Speaker 4: wondering is are you recruiting these players coming in or
- 14:40Speaker 4: have you been able to get a couple of football players,
- 14:43Speaker 4: a couple of basketball players, a couple of people from campus,
- 14:45Speaker 4: or how have you actually managed to where are you
- 14:50Speaker 4: finding these athletes from?
- 14:53Speaker 7: I think I just built my brand. I used to
- 14:55Speaker 7: do a lot of private coaching still to this day,
- 14:58Speaker 7: our private coach Professional Professional MMA. But I've always delivered
- 15:04Speaker 7: my promises. So I remember our coaches, King named Joe
- 15:07Speaker 7: in Massachusetts. He was a He was a Caucasian mail
- 15:10Speaker 7: about six foot five, two thirty and his grandfather paid
- 15:14Speaker 7: me to train him in the forty yard dash. He's like,
- 15:17Speaker 7: I need him to go sub you know, sub five seconds.
- 15:20Speaker 7: So y'all actually won a championship at Auburndy University as
- 15:24Speaker 7: I think at a lineman. But I remember they gave
- 15:26Speaker 7: me a month and I got him down to four
- 15:28Speaker 7: to seven at like and his weight dropped down I
- 15:30Speaker 7: think two thirty. I think he came in at two fifty.
- 15:33Speaker 7: So if you look at my track record, no matter
- 15:36Speaker 7: what school I've been at, I've always brought in fifty
- 15:39Speaker 7: to thirty kids every year. I've always broken records every year.
- 15:43Speaker 7: And I haven't had one university that I've been at
- 15:45Speaker 7: that I didn't have a national qualifier. But I just
- 15:50Speaker 7: I've been looking for my moment. But based off my
- 15:54Speaker 7: motivation and my drive, the opportunities was really never there.
- 15:57Speaker 7: I always had to work under somebody, a boss, always
- 16:00Speaker 7: get a promotion somewhere else, and I had the experience.
- 16:03Speaker 7: My best friend is kay Don Samuel's.
- 16:04Speaker 4: National You want to jump in, and I think the
- 16:08Speaker 4: more the question is is like, are the athletes that
- 16:11Speaker 4: you currently have on the team, are they coming are
- 16:13Speaker 4: they already like playing other sports at West Virginia State,
- 16:15Speaker 4: or they're being being recruited to come in and run.
- 16:19Speaker 7: They're being recruited. They're being recruited, but sure, you know,
- 16:22Speaker 7: I think a mindset was to bring in uh, you know,
- 16:25Speaker 7: bring kids that was already But when I got there,
- 16:28Speaker 7: I realized to have a perfect formula to to build
- 16:31Speaker 7: a team so quick. I had to bring in kids
- 16:33Speaker 7: that knew nothing about the university and that I could
- 16:36Speaker 7: mold and create a championship mentality. Not saying the other
- 16:40Speaker 7: sports don't have a championship mentality, but you know, if
- 16:44Speaker 7: you're in track, there's a speciftic mentality. One hundred is
- 16:50Speaker 7: not good enough sometimes.
- 16:51Speaker 5: Yeah, high coach, this is Lisa Odie. How are you, Tony?
- 16:55Speaker 5: Thanks well, good, thanks thanks for coming on the show.
- 16:59Speaker 5: I just have a quick questquestion about the way you
- 17:01Speaker 5: typically have a track practice for your players.
- 17:05Speaker 6: How do you structure it to address like the different
- 17:09Speaker 6: athletic needs and abilities of your of your kids.
- 17:11Speaker 7: Great question, So I mean for me, I'll shoot you.
- 17:15Speaker 7: I worked probably fifteen or seventeen hours a day and
- 17:18Speaker 7: that's all season long, that's three seasons. So I will
- 17:22Speaker 7: we start, I wake up five am every morning, we
- 17:25Speaker 7: drive them over to Lailey Phiel. We probably start practice
- 17:28Speaker 7: around six o'clock wow, and then we have two groups.
- 17:31Speaker 7: We layer it so I have a six am group
- 17:34Speaker 7: of seven am group and an eight am group, and
- 17:36Speaker 7: we kind of layered practice so when one come in,
- 17:38Speaker 7: one is finishing up and we'll go based off event groups.
- 17:42Speaker 7: The only event groups I don't coach as of right
- 17:44Speaker 7: now is the throats. Last year I coached everything by myself.
- 17:48Speaker 7: But we will go in especially and what helps me
- 17:53Speaker 7: is in the preseason I will do a range of
- 17:55Speaker 7: motion testing and I'll have them come in through things
- 17:59Speaker 7: like Olympic List. I have a pet coming Thomas. He
- 18:03Speaker 7: helps me for free, but we'll accept them early in
- 18:06Speaker 7: season to know what every athlete individual need is and
- 18:09Speaker 7: from there I will go in and I'll build a
- 18:12Speaker 7: twenty seven week program understanding that that might change, but
- 18:16Speaker 7: we will have something to go off and.
- 18:19Speaker 4: We don't have much time, so I know currently, you
- 18:22Speaker 4: guys had a very successful season this year and you
- 18:25Speaker 4: got one of our favorites.
- 18:26Speaker 3: We actually interviewed her. We got Candas.
- 18:28Speaker 4: You guys are at Nationals right now, so just tell
- 18:31Speaker 4: us a little bit about that experience. Is like taking
- 18:33Speaker 4: an athlete like Candas who's a local athlete.
- 18:36Speaker 3: Ranted. Capital has had a great career so far as state.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Now you are Nationals.
- 18:41Speaker 7: Now working with Kandas has been amazing. I actually did
- 18:44Speaker 7: a whole research project on Candas.
- 18:48Speaker 1: Man.
- 18:51Speaker 7: She should have been here last year, but she was
- 18:54Speaker 7: always sick. So I sat Candas down, I said, what
- 18:56Speaker 7: should go? She's you know, she said she wanted to
- 18:58Speaker 7: run pro. I said, man, I've been around professional athletes
- 19:01Speaker 7: my whole life. This is what it's going to take.
- 19:03Speaker 7: I said. The key ingredient is sacrificed.
- 19:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 19:06Speaker 7: You can't You can't do both. You gotta sacrifice every day.
- 19:10Speaker 7: So working with Canas when I got her, she definitely
- 19:13Speaker 7: was talented. She was a diamond in the rough. But
- 19:16Speaker 7: I've never seen someone so uncoordinated before. We spent the
- 19:21Speaker 7: whole summer working together. You know, we spent summers planning communication.
- 19:26Speaker 7: I mean, her work work is amazing. She'll text me
- 19:29Speaker 7: at one am and watch her race and then say hey,
- 19:33Speaker 7: I've seen X, Y and Z. And she knows a
- 19:34Speaker 7: month because she knows, she knows what's starting new programs
- 19:38Speaker 7: that I gotta stay up long nights that come with
- 19:40Speaker 7: the territory.
- 19:41Speaker 4: So we gotta bring me because I'm sorry, we gotta
- 19:44Speaker 4: wrap it up. So just tell us just again, you
- 19:48Speaker 4: guys made it to nationals. Like I said, I think
- 19:51Speaker 4: you did ray well in the conference this year and
- 19:54Speaker 4: last year. So just let people in and I want
- 19:56Speaker 4: to say this before we go. You guys do an
- 19:58Speaker 4: excellent job on social media, like you said, pitting the product,
- 20:01Speaker 4: pitting the brand of West Virginia State track out there.
- 20:04Speaker 3: So just tell people how they can find you.
- 20:08Speaker 7: Yeah, you can find us on social media on Instagram.
- 20:12Speaker 7: Our Instagram account is WV as you underscored TSXC. And
- 20:19Speaker 7: then if you go online and just type in West
- 20:21Speaker 7: Virginia State University, my contact information is on there. The
- 20:25Speaker 7: main message I want to send to West Virginia if
- 20:27Speaker 7: you if you talented and you know you, you know
- 20:29Speaker 7: you got some talent and you just need to develop.
- 20:31Speaker 7: This is a place where you could develop. No one
- 20:34Speaker 7: here on the team was a fire star recruit. We all,
- 20:37Speaker 7: all the asses us here have been developed. This is
- 20:40Speaker 7: we're not looking for a finished product, but we're looking
- 20:43Speaker 7: to produce here.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Nice coach, we appreciate you being on and promise you,
- 20:49Speaker 4: me and Hollis at least will be down there to
- 20:51Speaker 4: check it out. Come down and take a look at
- 20:53Speaker 4: you and maybe we can steal lease since she can
- 20:55Speaker 4: get a chance.
- 20:55Speaker 3: So we'll be down and check you out.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Okay, thanks, that sounds good.
- 21:00Speaker 3: Thank you.
- 21:01Speaker 5: Thank you.
- 21:03Speaker 4: So to me when I just in listening to him, Yeah,
- 21:13Speaker 4: you don't really find track coaches. Quote track coaches that
- 21:19Speaker 4: invested in and intense. That's you know, he could be
- 21:22Speaker 4: a coach, he could be a football comer.
- 21:24Speaker 3: And I love it.
- 21:25Speaker 4: And I think just getting back to it when we
- 21:27Speaker 4: because I know we spent a lot of time on
- 21:29Speaker 4: this show talking about you know, athletes here locally, and
- 21:32Speaker 4: one of the things I will always say is that
- 21:35Speaker 4: we have to as far as football and basketball players
- 21:37Speaker 4: develop athletes, boys and girls, we have to get back
- 21:40Speaker 4: to track.
- 21:41Speaker 7: We have.
- 21:42Speaker 3: Track has got to be almost a baseline.
- 21:45Speaker 7: It is.
- 21:46Speaker 4: I can tell people this. Without track, I don't have
- 21:51Speaker 4: the football career that I have. It's it's speed, it's endurance,
- 21:57Speaker 4: it's all of those kinds of things that you that
- 22:00Speaker 4: you don't think matter. And I I was thinking about
- 22:03Speaker 4: you last night and did your experience running track, because
- 22:07Speaker 4: you know, it's kind of just you out there, did
- 22:09Speaker 4: that correlate to your position playing cornerback, because it's like, really,
- 22:13Speaker 4: I think if cornerback and track is almost kind of
- 22:15Speaker 4: one to one. Really, it's just you it's it's yes,
- 22:20Speaker 4: I think I think so. And part of that is
- 22:23Speaker 4: is because speed is everything on the car. You know, Now,
- 22:29Speaker 4: when I say everything like there's people who can run you.
- 22:32Speaker 4: If you can be faster than a whole lot of folks,
- 22:36Speaker 4: that makes the coverage a whole lot easier because you're
- 22:38Speaker 4: not You're not worrying about that particular guy.
- 22:40Speaker 3: That's just the mentality.
- 22:41Speaker 6: You're just and conditioning. Doesn't it make it conditioning year round?
- 22:45Speaker 6: I mean that way you're not losing so much over
- 22:47Speaker 6: your your spring and summer months.
- 22:50Speaker 3: That's a good point.
- 22:51Speaker 4: I'm talking about sixteen week workout playing, but four weeks
- 22:55Speaker 4: of training camp for sixteen weeks or the season.
- 22:58Speaker 3: So I'm putting in sixteen.
- 23:01Speaker 4: Weeks, five days, five days a week now, all through
- 23:05Speaker 4: the off season, just to get through four weeks of camp, right,
- 23:10Speaker 4: and then sixteen games. The sixteen games is easy. Yeah, sure,
- 23:15Speaker 4: you know, sure, camp is easy. Conditioning. I'm not worried
- 23:19Speaker 4: about the conditioning. I don't have to worry about that, not,
- 23:21Speaker 4: not with my off season program, right, you know. So
- 23:25Speaker 4: we're getting ready to take a quick break and we
- 23:27Speaker 4: will be right back.
- 23:28Speaker 8: Let's face it, bad things happen to good people seriously
- 23:31Speaker 8: injured in a car accident, trucking accident, or even wrongfully arrested.

- 24:30Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, we are back, and Hollis,
- 24:33Speaker 4: we have a we have another guest.
- 24:34Speaker 3: Yeah, we have another guy.
- 24:35Speaker 4: And again on this show, we spend a lot of
- 24:37Speaker 4: time talking about youth athletics, youth sports. You know coach
- 24:41Speaker 4: he runs the youth program down at the City of
- 24:44Speaker 4: South Charleston. We've all been involved with youth sports as
- 24:47Speaker 4: some capacity. So we have a not not only a
- 24:50Speaker 4: youth athlete on the line, but we have an all
- 24:54Speaker 4: amerriage a national championship. Are you there, hello, Yes, I'm here,
- 25:02Speaker 4: all right, So we have Ashlynd Newton. Newton, I mess
- 25:08Speaker 4: up with your name?
- 25:09Speaker 3: Hello? Hello? Hey, so hi.
- 25:16Speaker 9: Hello.
- 25:17Speaker 4: So, first of all, congratulations you won from you won
- 25:21Speaker 4: the long the national a you long jump, and then
- 25:25Speaker 4: you got second place in the sixty meter hurdles.
- 25:28Speaker 3: Is that correct?
- 25:30Speaker 10: Yes, that's correct.
- 25:31Speaker 3: Okay, So how was that experience?
- 25:35Speaker 10: That experience was really kind of fun. I mean, well
- 25:40Speaker 10: it was kind of hard to because in the sixty
- 25:43Speaker 10: meter hurles I kind of fell started twice and that
- 25:47Speaker 10: made me a little bit nervous going into the finals.
- 25:49Speaker 7: Sure.
- 25:49Speaker 4: Yeah, so and talk to us about overcoming that adversity
- 25:53Speaker 4: where like you were maybe afraid you won't get disqualified,
- 25:57Speaker 4: and then you had to actually.
- 25:58Speaker 3: Come back and then do the race. So So how
- 26:00Speaker 3: was that? Just say, coming back from that?
- 26:04Speaker 10: How was like coming back from that?
- 26:07Speaker 3: Yes, I was.
- 26:08Speaker 10: I was just like, Okay, I got to pull it together.
- 26:11Speaker 10: I just got to persevere and do it nice.
- 26:15Speaker 3: Ashley.
- 26:16Speaker 4: This is this is Curl Lee and I And I'm
- 26:18Speaker 4: sure that you you probably don't know anything about me.
- 26:21Speaker 4: And I'm only going to preface this by saying, I
- 26:24Speaker 4: was a professional athlete for quite a while and in
- 26:28Speaker 4: high school I tried to run.
- 26:31Speaker 8: I was.
- 26:32Speaker 3: I was a track guy.
- 26:33Speaker 4: Okay, And I love the hurdles, right, I loved them.
- 26:37Speaker 4: I thought they were like the coolest thing ever. So
- 26:41Speaker 4: I I tried to run the hurdles and I get
- 26:45Speaker 4: into We're in the first meet.
- 26:47Speaker 2: That we have.
- 26:48Speaker 4: We're Lately Field, which is our big field here in
- 26:50Speaker 4: West Virginia. I get over the first hurdle, I'm good.
- 26:54Speaker 4: I get over the second hurdle, I'm good. I'm thinking,
- 26:57Speaker 4: oh man, I'm good. Third hurdle, the heel, My heel
- 27:01Speaker 4: caught the top of the hurdle. I literally went over.
- 27:06Speaker 4: I took out two hurdles over and I was like never,
- 27:14Speaker 4: I said, no way I could run it. So my
- 27:17Speaker 4: hat is off to you, because to me, that is
- 27:21Speaker 4: the most That skill set in hurdles has to be
- 27:26Speaker 4: the greatest skill set. And how old are you? I
- 27:35Speaker 4: couldn't do it at eighteen and you're doing it at
- 27:39Speaker 4: the highest level at eleven. My hat is off to
- 27:43Speaker 4: you because I just can't imagine how much time you
- 27:46Speaker 4: have to put in. What help me with this? What
- 27:50Speaker 4: is your what is a typical workout day for you?
- 27:54Speaker 4: Let's say for the hurdles specifically, what would you do?
- 27:58Speaker 4: What would be your normal day?
- 28:01Speaker 10: So for the hurdles, my normal day would be I
- 28:05Speaker 10: do some stretches, do some quick sprints, then I'll start
- 28:11Speaker 10: doing like some hurdle howts. Then I'll start doing full
- 28:15Speaker 10: approach to the hurdles.
- 28:16Speaker 4: See, I must see. My problem was I didn't do
- 28:19Speaker 4: none of the none of that on the Fronday. I
- 28:21Speaker 4: didn't know the war, So that's why.
- 28:25Speaker 5: I just didn't do it like you are.
- 28:27Speaker 4: Girl.
- 28:29Speaker 5: Hey, Ashon, this is Lisa Odie. How are you this evening?
- 28:34Speaker 9: I'm good, good, It's.
- 28:36Speaker 5: Good to have you on the show.
- 28:37Speaker 6: I'm so impressed with all your accomplishments. Hey, I just
- 28:40Speaker 6: have a quick question, and if you don't have an answer,
- 28:43Speaker 6: it's okay.
- 28:44Speaker 5: But I hope you do. Who is your biggest inspiration
- 28:47Speaker 5: in track and field?
- 28:48Speaker 3: Do you have one?
- 28:50Speaker 10: Yeah?
- 28:50Speaker 9: Too, my biggest inspira.
- 28:52Speaker 10: My biggest inspiration is my mom because because I always
- 28:58Speaker 10: try to be better than her.
- 29:00Speaker 3: Just a reference.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Her mother was a volleyball and track athlete at West
- 29:04Speaker 4: Virginia State during our time there. So uh Mi, Shelle Newton.
- 29:08Speaker 4: She was an All Conference of volleyball and track athlete.
- 29:11Speaker 4: So yeah, so you got some big shoes to feel.
- 29:13Speaker 5: Yeah, that's awesome. That's awesome answer.
- 29:17Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:17Speaker 4: So again, so, so what are your ultimate goals with
- 29:21Speaker 4: you know, track and kind of where do you see
- 29:23Speaker 4: yourself at like maybe in high school?
- 29:27Speaker 10: In high school, I want to try and make it
- 29:29Speaker 10: to the Olympics. And I also want to try and
- 29:34Speaker 10: jump and jumps.
- 29:37Speaker 3: Nice, I love it. Yeah. Is your is your mom?
- 29:42Speaker 3: Is she can? You can your mom?
- 29:43Speaker 1: Hear us?
- 29:45Speaker 3: Yes?
- 29:46Speaker 4: Yes?
- 29:46Speaker 3: Hello, How are you to tell me a little bit? Good? Good,
- 29:51Speaker 3: tell me a little bit about what you're seeing in
- 29:55Speaker 3: your daughter?
- 29:55Speaker 1: Like what is it?
- 29:56Speaker 4: Because because to me, just for just us listening to
- 30:00Speaker 4: her clearly like she's well advanced. To me, the mental
- 30:05Speaker 4: side of her is just amazing. Yeah, you know, so
- 30:10Speaker 4: tell us a little bit about like what this is
- 30:13Speaker 4: to you? Like when you when you listen to her,
- 30:15Speaker 4: you look at her and you see what she's doing,
- 30:17Speaker 4: like like what are you like?
- 30:19Speaker 3: You're in awe?
- 30:19Speaker 4: What?
- 30:19Speaker 8: What? What?
- 30:20Speaker 3: Tell us a little bit about that?
- 30:22Speaker 9: Really, I I really am in awe. I look at
- 30:26Speaker 9: her and I just remember myself at her age, and
- 30:29Speaker 9: I'm like, oh no, it's not even comparison, it's not
- 30:31Speaker 9: all at all. And and like she said, it was
- 30:35Speaker 9: surprising that she said that I was her favorite track,
- 30:38Speaker 9: because I know she really looks at a lot of
- 30:40Speaker 9: other ones, and you know that was that's that's saying something.
- 30:43Speaker 9: And I guess I'm doing something right. But in terms
- 30:46Speaker 9: of just mentally preparing her, you know, I just just
- 30:49Speaker 9: tell her like, hey, if you want to do this,
- 30:51Speaker 9: you can. If you don't, you don't have to because again,
- 30:54Speaker 9: at the end of the day, you're still just eleven
- 30:55Speaker 9: years old.
- 30:56Speaker 3: And uh.
- 30:57Speaker 9: And I want to make sure she her goals if
- 31:00Speaker 9: she wants to make it to the Olympics. I believe
- 31:03Speaker 9: that she can. In terms of athleticism, she has it all.
- 31:09Speaker 9: She not only that, she's a very good student too,
- 31:12Speaker 9: She makes all as she's just a really good person. Yeah,
- 31:18Speaker 9: she she really is, you know. And just to speak
- 31:20Speaker 9: a little bit to you know, her jumping in what
- 31:23Speaker 9: she is doing in her capabilities. Now, just to give
- 31:26Speaker 9: you a perspective, her best jump is a seventeen to six. Now,
- 31:32Speaker 9: seventeen feet jump now.
- 31:37Speaker 5: That can you please?
- 31:39Speaker 3: Can you please say that again?
- 31:42Speaker 5: Oh my goodness?
- 31:43Speaker 3: Are you.
- 31:46Speaker 6: In my dude?
- 31:46Speaker 9: It's just still indoor season. Well, we just finished indoor season.
- 31:50Speaker 9: She still has the whole outdoor season to kind of
- 31:54Speaker 9: really really do her best and her goal is to
- 31:57Speaker 9: try to get eighteen before the end of wow outdoor season.
- 32:01Speaker 3: So what what was the win? What was the winning
- 32:04Speaker 3: jump at the national the AU national championships.
- 32:08Speaker 9: So her jump was yeah, she was still she had
- 32:11Speaker 9: to win and jump. She was a foot and a
- 32:14Speaker 9: half behind the board for whatever reason, we couldn't get
- 32:16Speaker 9: our footing down, but she still out jumped everybody at
- 32:20Speaker 9: least by two or three feet. Wow, she jumped to
- 32:27Speaker 9: fifteen eleven.
- 32:28Speaker 3: Oh nice, Wow, you know that's not that's not eleven
- 32:33Speaker 3: year old jump. Yeah, I guess, I guess. So, So
- 32:41Speaker 3: what's what's next?
- 32:42Speaker 4: As far as you mentioned, so we had the indoor
- 32:45Speaker 4: AU season, that's national championship.
- 32:47Speaker 3: We did that. What's next after that?
- 32:50Speaker 9: So we're going into the outdoor season and we're going
- 32:53Speaker 9: to be participating in the USA Track and Field Division
- 32:58Speaker 9: as well as the A Division. So we'll be petering
- 33:02Speaker 9: back and forth through both of those divisions all the
- 33:06Speaker 9: way up to their national meet and that's usually in August,
- 33:11Speaker 9: end of July.
- 33:12Speaker 3: Awesome, one more time, so let's thot to ask.
- 33:20Speaker 10: Hi.
- 33:20Speaker 4: All right, so we're going to close out, and again
- 33:23Speaker 4: we congratulate you on everything you're doing and we just
- 33:25Speaker 4: hope that you keep on doing and keep on having
- 33:28Speaker 4: having fun and having a love for what you're doing.
- 33:30Speaker 4: So do you want to get any closing message? Where
- 33:33Speaker 4: can people find where can they learn more about Ashland?
- 33:38Speaker 10: They can check out my Instagram page that's ran by
- 33:41Speaker 10: my mom. All right, Sunshine seven.
- 33:45Speaker 3: Say that one more time.
- 33:48Speaker 10: It's all right sign Sunshine seven.
- 33:50Speaker 3: All right, thank you as we appreciate you, Thank thank you,
- 33:54Speaker 3: and good time much thank you. Now that Yeah, that
- 34:09Speaker 3: little girl right there would be my hero.
- 34:13Speaker 4: You know what I'm saying, Like even just hearing her,
- 34:16Speaker 4: just hearing her talk, and and Mom's sitting right there
- 34:21Speaker 4: and she's talking as if like she's grown up. You
- 34:25Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, Like, she's I I would love
- 34:30Speaker 4: and I'm gonna put this on you. We need to
- 34:31Speaker 4: get some kind of video of her. I'm sure mom
- 34:34Speaker 4: has recorded her running or something. We need we need
- 34:39Speaker 4: to we need to get that and if anything, just
- 34:41Speaker 4: put it on. Let's put it on. Let's talk so
- 34:43Speaker 4: other people can see it.
- 34:45Speaker 5: That would be great.
- 34:45Speaker 3: Yeah, because I think I think that's I.
- 34:47Speaker 4: Think she's a special, special athlete as a whole, she's
- 34:52Speaker 4: so so so Now we did that, We got to
- 34:54Speaker 4: get into the meet and gravy.
- 34:56Speaker 3: Now get to what we came for. Oh for coach,
- 35:03Speaker 3: I'm thinking.
- 35:05Speaker 5: I think it's daddy ball, all right, so.
- 35:10Speaker 3: Let me, let me, let me I'm opening it up,
- 35:14Speaker 3: all right.
- 35:14Speaker 4: So the term daddy ball has been something that's been
- 35:21Speaker 4: around for a while, and it and it's my definition.
- 35:25Speaker 3: Of it is when when dad basically.
- 35:31Speaker 4: Tries to control everything about his son his daughter to
- 35:35Speaker 4: make them be part, not really part, but be the starter,
- 35:40Speaker 4: be the best player, all of that kind of thing.
- 35:43Speaker 3: That's actually a great definition.
- 35:44Speaker 6: Yes, that's you know, but there is a there is
- 35:46Speaker 6: an official definition. Okay, it's amazing what Google can do, right, GTS.
- 35:54Speaker 6: It's like, so I typed in daddy ball, and so
- 35:57Speaker 6: this is what I got. I got basically two separate definitions,
- 36:01Speaker 6: and I'm going to read it word for word for
- 36:02Speaker 6: you guys, and then you guys can tell me because
- 36:04Speaker 6: I have kind of I have an inclination of where
- 36:09Speaker 6: if we're going the route I think we are with Lebron,
- 36:11Speaker 6: which one really kind of is Lebron's category, so to speak.
- 36:16Speaker 6: So the first one is a term used to describe
- 36:19Speaker 6: when a parent coaches their child's sports team and favors
- 36:22Speaker 6: their child over other players.
- 36:24Speaker 5: That's one o. The second part is parent, a parent
- 36:27Speaker 5: creates a team around their child, even if their child
- 36:32Speaker 5: isn't a strong player.
- 36:34Speaker 3: Wow, I've seen yeah, show.
- 36:38Speaker 5: Right there to me, don't you.
- 36:40Speaker 3: There's some travel balls.
- 36:45Speaker 4: So let's just break it down because when we see
- 36:47Speaker 4: daddy ball, and when we say daddy ball, we're going
- 36:50Speaker 4: to keep it at the highest level.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:52Speaker 4: So we've seen the Primes, we've seen the LeVar balls,
- 36:56Speaker 4: we've seen the Richard Williams, and now you've got to
- 36:59Speaker 4: sit you in which Lebron and his son Bronnie, and
- 37:03Speaker 4: I think to the other ones that I previously mentioned
- 37:06Speaker 4: it's probably not so much of an argument as to
- 37:09Speaker 4: their merit to where they deserve to be. I think
- 37:13Speaker 4: that argument can be had with Bronni and Lebron's son,
- 37:17Speaker 4: and there was a recent event with him and Stephen A.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Smith. Stephen A.
- 37:20Speaker 4: Smith again, to my knowledge and to the talking points
- 37:24Speaker 4: that I've heard from Steven A. Smith regarding lebron Son,
- 37:28Speaker 4: it was always in reference to say, hey, he's okay,
- 37:31Speaker 4: he's a G League player, and Lebron did him a
- 37:34Speaker 4: disservice by putting this much on him. That's the talking
- 37:36Speaker 4: points that I've heard from Steven A. And I don't
- 37:38Speaker 4: agree with Stephen A A all the time, and I
- 37:41Speaker 4: just think it was in poor taste, It was immature,
- 37:47Speaker 4: and it was just almost a sucker move for Lebron
- 37:51Speaker 4: to get up into Stephen A. Smith face in that manner,
- 37:56Speaker 4: in that respect, in that setting, Yeah you want to.
- 38:02Speaker 6: Go, I can, I can, so I totally agree with
- 38:05Speaker 6: what you're Saint Hollis. I think that was a total
- 38:08Speaker 6: ambush and it was fourth side of a game. I mean,
- 38:11Speaker 6: that whole situation. If Lebron had an issue with what
- 38:14Speaker 6: Stephen has been saying about Brony throughout the season on
- 38:17Speaker 6: different you know, first takes or whatever.
- 38:19Speaker 5: Outside of first take, there were other ways to approach it.
- 38:22Speaker 6: He could have picked up the phone, he could have
- 38:24Speaker 6: called I think in one of the clips that I
- 38:27Speaker 6: saw Stephen A. Smith addressing all of this, he even said, Hey,
- 38:30Speaker 6: I would have flown out there and met with him
- 38:31Speaker 6: when I one, you know, he said, if it was
- 38:34Speaker 6: this much of an issue with him, he said, you know,
- 38:36Speaker 6: our relationships and I'm paraphrasing of course that they do
- 38:40Speaker 6: have an abrasive relationship anyway over the years. But then
- 38:43Speaker 6: I guess when this situation happened, it just kind of
- 38:47Speaker 6: pushed Lebron over the edge. But still the way he
- 38:50Speaker 6: handled it is the problem I have with the whole situation.
- 38:53Speaker 4: I would have made Lebron slap the fire out of
- 38:55Speaker 4: me and suit it for And okay, so even even
- 39:02Speaker 4: even to your point, hollis what I'm I'm looking at
- 39:06Speaker 4: this as as as being Lebron right, and you you're
- 39:11Speaker 4: talking about my son.
- 39:12Speaker 3: I one get that you I can't let you talk
- 39:17Speaker 3: about my son, but.
- 39:21Speaker 4: The situation, what the situation becomes is your son is
- 39:25Speaker 4: an NBA player and a grown man.
- 39:28Speaker 3: And a grown man, right, I my job.
- 39:33Speaker 4: You know, Lebron will talking about you know, or people
- 39:35Speaker 4: talking about Lebron's contract Stephen A. Is he his contractor
- 39:41Speaker 4: he is right there? Yes, he just got one. So
- 39:44Speaker 4: as good as Lebron is in playing, he's as good
- 39:48Speaker 4: as a commentator.
- 39:50Speaker 3: As you can get. Like him or not. I didn't
- 39:53Speaker 3: think about that, but that's like him or not as
- 39:55Speaker 3: a fair point.
- 39:56Speaker 4: So now when you walk up on him, it's no
- 40:00Speaker 4: different than somebody walking up to Lebron.
- 40:03Speaker 3: We even, we're easy. That's a fair point where you
- 40:08Speaker 3: finally got some good points. That is a good point.
- 40:12Speaker 3: We are even.
- 40:13Speaker 4: You don't have nothing on me point now because we
- 40:18Speaker 4: are equal. Okay, we're with you. So so now I
- 40:21Speaker 4: don't know how big you are because at the end
- 40:24Speaker 4: of the day, slap me and now let me tell me,
- 40:27Speaker 4: tell me where your career going. So so there could
- 40:32Speaker 4: not be any hands on and I jump in and
- 40:35Speaker 4: I think this little injury let Lebron got, I think
- 40:38Speaker 4: that's a suspension.
- 40:41Speaker 3: Do you think that it could be? Could it could be?
- 40:44Speaker 4: I think they don't want to say that, but I
- 40:47Speaker 4: think that's what this is. My pain, that's just conjecture,
- 40:50Speaker 4: that's just opinion. Okay, and and and it's valid.
- 40:55Speaker 3: I think again, stepping in for your son is fine.
- 41:01Speaker 4: The moment that your son becomes an NBA player, as
- 41:04Speaker 4: you call him, he's susceptible to any criticism from.
- 41:10Speaker 3: Any media outlet.
- 41:12Speaker 4: That and you don't have a and you don't have
- 41:14Speaker 4: a right to come back on you don't have that right.
- 41:19Speaker 4: But but to your point, is it okay for him
- 41:23Speaker 4: to step in? Not any accord at this point, because
- 41:26Speaker 4: I mean, even if they're talking about his personality or
- 41:29Speaker 4: what are taking personal shots, is it okay your son
- 41:33Speaker 4: is a professional athlete, he's on the same stage as you.
- 41:36Speaker 3: Is it okay at this point to step in with anything?
- 41:38Speaker 3: Or do you just let him go?
- 41:39Speaker 5: No, I think you. I think you should let him go.
- 41:42Speaker 3: To let him go.
- 41:43Speaker 6: But let's let's look at this from another angle. Let's
- 41:46Speaker 6: think about the way Browny was brought into the NBA.
- 41:48Speaker 6: We all know he got the opportunity because of his dad,
- 41:51Speaker 6: for we all know that dad at the highest level. Yes,
- 41:55Speaker 6: the whole conversation we're having daddy ball. But don't you
- 41:58Speaker 6: feel like no matter what Bronny does, people are hyper
- 42:02Speaker 6: critical of him. No matter what he does, he has
- 42:05Speaker 6: held to a higher standard because of the way he
- 42:07Speaker 6: got his opportunity compared to other players.
- 42:10Speaker 5: I'm not saying that that's right or wrong. I'm saying
- 42:13Speaker 5: that's simply what happens with him.
- 42:14Speaker 4: So are you saying like that may like make Lebron
- 42:17Speaker 4: a little bit more sensitive to the situation.
- 42:19Speaker 6: I think so. And also it's just he's an easier
- 42:21Speaker 6: target because his dad is Lebron.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Like Stephen A.
- 42:24Speaker 6: Smith would not spend as much time on the subject
- 42:27Speaker 6: of Bronni if his dad wasn't Lebron, if he was
- 42:29Speaker 6: just a run of the mill player, that.
- 42:33Speaker 3: I would disagree. I disagree.
- 42:35Speaker 4: I think anybody who brings their player, their son into
- 42:40Speaker 4: play and does the exact same thing that Lebron done
- 42:45Speaker 4: because we ain't draft I'm not drafting.
- 42:47Speaker 5: They don't get the notoriety and the media.
- 42:50Speaker 4: Ron to your point, I don't think we've ever seen
- 42:53Speaker 4: a situation in which basically Lebron strong armed the Lakers
- 42:56Speaker 4: and said, if you ain't getting him, you're not having me.
- 42:59Speaker 4: I don't think we've seen a bunch of the NBA, NBA, NBA,
- 43:03Speaker 4: particularly the NBA will stay there is filled with nepotism,
- 43:06Speaker 4: at this point, there's a lot of second and third
- 43:08Speaker 4: generation players, but I don't think we've ever seen a
- 43:10Speaker 4: situation like that exactly. And he should have never got
- 43:14Speaker 4: ever got off the bench. He should have never been in.
- 43:16Speaker 4: He should have never been in. Again, he should have
- 43:18Speaker 4: never been.
- 43:19Speaker 3: In the game. And then the fact that you know,
- 43:21Speaker 3: like he ain't on the team. Now, then how was
- 43:24Speaker 3: he in uniform?
- 43:25Speaker 4: How was he part of your dressing team that's gonna
- 43:29Speaker 4: come out on the out on the court and play.
- 43:31Speaker 3: He Lebron.
- 43:35Speaker 4: Took daddy ball to the to the epitome of demanding this.
- 43:40Speaker 4: So if you can demand this, then you got to
- 43:43Speaker 4: be prepared to take any criticism.
- 43:46Speaker 3: Because you because you're wrong. Your son couldn't play.
- 43:49Speaker 4: I can't disagree with that your son couldn't I don't
- 43:52Speaker 4: even have a rebut to that, no, Now, all.
- 43:58Speaker 3: That you named all right, players played hardware, They stepped
- 44:03Speaker 3: up and played.
- 44:04Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 44:05Speaker 3: Lebron's son did not cannot step up and play. Yeah.
- 44:10Speaker 3: And so ain't know you you mad at the commentator
- 44:12Speaker 3: who are saying he can't play?
- 44:15Speaker 4: Okay, but let me ask you another situation then, and
- 44:18Speaker 4: again this ain't daddy ball per se. But like the
- 44:20Speaker 4: Greek fig Giannis of Milwaukee. Basically he brought his brothers in,
- 44:24Speaker 4: So would that be similar or is that a different situation.
- 44:28Speaker 4: But the question, my question is because it's it's really
- 44:32Speaker 4: only daddy ball, brother ball, mom and ball. It's only
- 44:35Speaker 4: that if. To me, it only gets that way if
- 44:39Speaker 4: the players can't play. Okay, you know, if the players
- 44:43Speaker 4: can play, If they can you know, if they show
- 44:45Speaker 4: up then and then that's okay.
- 44:48Speaker 6: Even if the only reason they got the opportunity to
- 44:50Speaker 6: try out for the team was because it was daddy
- 44:53Speaker 6: or mommy or brother or whatever you're saying, it doesn't matter.
- 44:57Speaker 6: I'm gonna say there's undiscovered players out there that are
- 44:59Speaker 6: talented that will never get the opportunity to go play
- 45:01Speaker 6: at the NBA because they.
- 45:02Speaker 4: Don't absolutely But again, to those examples, you had to
- 45:07Speaker 4: actually physically, mentally, emotionally make the team. So I guess,
- 45:11Speaker 4: I guess what you're saying is that regardless of how
- 45:14Speaker 4: you got the opportunity, if you're right and you can play,
- 45:18Speaker 4: and you can, it is could. But at the point
- 45:21Speaker 4: that the point we're talking about, we're not sure he
- 45:24Speaker 4: can do that. If if if if I'm if I'm prime.
- 45:30Speaker 3: And my son.
- 45:31Speaker 4: I ain't gonna go to pro. I'm gonna just go
- 45:33Speaker 4: talk college. I'm gonna put my son in this position.
- 45:36Speaker 4: I'm gonna put his buddy at this position because I
- 45:39Speaker 4: know them, and I know what they can do.
- 45:41Speaker 3: Now we saw what they can do. They can play.
- 45:43Speaker 3: And while that you can make the case that's the
- 45:46Speaker 3: epitome of a daddy ball. But they can play. Okay.
- 45:49Speaker 3: See so I see.
- 45:50Speaker 4: I like that definition because I think you you've sort
- 45:53Speaker 4: of expanded it. So because to your point least, looking
- 45:57Speaker 4: at the second part of the definition, if I'm building
- 45:59Speaker 4: a team around my son and my son or daughter
- 46:04Speaker 4: they can actually play and do the job, then that's
- 46:06Speaker 4: a difference in the race. If I'm bringing somebody in
- 46:09Speaker 4: who just doesn't have the talent to do it. And
- 46:11Speaker 4: and you know, and basketball basketball, and I've seen this,
- 46:15Speaker 4: you know in you sports. Dad brings son, Son's a starter,
- 46:20Speaker 4: no issue, son can play, no issue, son shoots the
- 46:24Speaker 4: ball most of the time. It's an issue. Okay, you
- 46:29Speaker 4: know what I'm saying, Because at some point Dad's got
- 46:31Speaker 4: to say, hey, stop shooting past. You gotta pass it.
- 46:34Speaker 4: You know, you gotta be you gotta be a team.
- 46:36Speaker 4: It's got to be a team daddy balls. Okay, if
- 46:39Speaker 4: it's if it's managed, if you can manage it, and
- 46:42Speaker 4: which I think is really difficult, if you can manage
- 46:45Speaker 4: it to the point your son is just a player.
- 46:48Speaker 4: If my dad was a coach, Brown probably ain't playing.
- 46:51Speaker 4: I ain't he ain't he ain't he Probably I make
- 47:00Speaker 4: mistake Dad pulling me, and he probably pulling me for
- 47:03Speaker 4: the game. You should have known better than that. So okay,
- 47:07Speaker 4: so let me ask you this, leak. I think what
- 47:09Speaker 4: coach is saying, the issue ain't necessarily daddy ball. The
- 47:14Speaker 4: issue is saying pitting somebody who's not qualified or prepared
- 47:17Speaker 4: in the position.
- 47:18Speaker 3: Would you agree with that?
- 47:20Speaker 6: What's your thoughts on I mean, I think that that
- 47:22Speaker 6: is a good valid way to redefine it, because you know,
- 47:27Speaker 6: we always just think about, you know, daddy ball being
- 47:29Speaker 6: for those that aren't as capable as the other you know, teammates,
- 47:35Speaker 6: And now we're looking at it as Yes, as long
- 47:38Speaker 6: as daddy is first of all, he's regulated, and how
- 47:42Speaker 6: he lets his son participate in the sport, he doesn't
- 47:45Speaker 6: overemphasize his his son over the other players. That's part
- 47:49Speaker 6: of it, right, And then the other part is they
- 47:51Speaker 6: legitimately can play whatever sport it is, right, They are
- 47:55Speaker 6: legitimately qualified, right, Okay, I mean.
- 47:58Speaker 4: And I really can't be mad at that because I
- 48:00Speaker 4: didn't necessarily think about it like that. I think there
- 48:03Speaker 4: to your point, Lisa, there is a balance there because
- 48:05Speaker 4: even if he can or he or she, if they
- 48:08Speaker 4: can play, then there has to be an emphasis on
- 48:11Speaker 4: particularly talking about like little league, youth sportsbody else involved. Right.
- 48:15Speaker 4: But I just think, and again I'm looking at it
- 48:18Speaker 4: from maybe a different perspective. I just never thought we
- 48:21Speaker 4: would see like Daddy ball this much in our face
- 48:25Speaker 4: at the highest level of sports. I never thought I
- 48:28Speaker 4: would see an NBA player like this, or even a
- 48:31Speaker 4: prime to a degree how not necessarily his kids can play,
- 48:34Speaker 4: for sure, but just the marketing that he builts around them,
- 48:38Speaker 4: you know what I mean. I think we've seen this,
- 48:40Speaker 4: like even like a King Griffith, he played with his dad,
- 48:42Speaker 4: but I don't think it was a relationship where Dad
- 48:44Speaker 4: putting me on King is great. He's better than this, right, right,
- 48:47Speaker 4: So I just I never thought we would see it
- 48:50Speaker 4: at the highest level to this degree, and.
- 48:53Speaker 6: It's seeming a bad taste in some of the NBA fans.
- 48:56Speaker 6: I think it's leaving a bad taste with.
- 48:58Speaker 4: The well and again to me, Lebron oft to go situation. Yeah,
- 49:03Speaker 4: you said, that's exactly where I was gady to go.
- 49:07Speaker 4: What that did for him is it knocks his legacy
- 49:12Speaker 4: that conversation. Yeah, because I think to degree you getting
- 49:16Speaker 4: your son there, that's one thing.
- 49:17Speaker 3: But Michael Jordan would never care for something good or not.
- 49:23Speaker 4: He would never because what Mike to me, what Mike's
- 49:28Speaker 4: gonna say about his son If his son can't make it.
- 49:31Speaker 3: Right, I can't put my name on you, exactly. I
- 49:35Speaker 3: can't put my name on you. Shame on Lebron for
- 49:38Speaker 3: putting his name on his son.
- 49:40Speaker 4: I ain't gonna say that. I ain't gonna I ain't
- 49:42Speaker 4: gonna say because here's here's here's the thing, here's the problem.
- 49:46Speaker 3: That's take the s O E. N off of it.
- 49:51Speaker 3: You put your name on it.
- 49:52Speaker 4: A potential NBA player and he failed. Did you not
- 49:59Speaker 4: know he was gonna fail? Maybe you didn't, may she
- 50:02Speaker 4: because at the end of the day, he is an
- 50:05Speaker 4: NBA player, He's a He's a player that Lebron stood
- 50:09Speaker 4: up for to hopefully be able to get him in
- 50:11Speaker 4: the NBA. He ain't his son, he's a he's a
- 50:14Speaker 4: potential NBA player. He got drafted because Lebron said draft okay.
- 50:19Speaker 3: And I'm with you.
- 50:20Speaker 4: I'm I'm leaning towards your way, but I guess I'm
- 50:24Speaker 4: looking at it just slightly different because my situation, my
- 50:27Speaker 4: my problem is is just that even the whole situation
- 50:30Speaker 4: with the son, the Banana bu boys, everything else, it
- 50:32Speaker 4: just don't foster environment of competitiveness.
- 50:36Speaker 3: This ain't to your point. This ain't like saying, all right, son,
- 50:40Speaker 3: I'm gonna give you this G league G league rip, then.
- 50:43Speaker 4: You got you got it from here five. That's a
- 50:45Speaker 4: difference because now you got that's total. Yes, you gotta
- 50:47Speaker 4: go take the bust with the team. You gotta go
- 50:49Speaker 4: take the little terrible charter for that's what the team.
- 50:52Speaker 4: You gotta go be a dog about it now, so
- 50:54Speaker 4: you gotta make your own way. I'm gonna give you
- 50:56Speaker 4: the boost up, but I'm not gonna carry you on
- 50:58Speaker 4: my back.
- 50:59Speaker 3: So I think it just for the bigger piece.
- 51:01Speaker 4: I mean, we've talked about All Star Games, we talked
- 51:03Speaker 4: about the style of play, and to me, the Lebron
- 51:07Speaker 4: era is just not one of just furious, dogged, just
- 51:11Speaker 4: competitiveness where we see guys just bite each other's head
- 51:14Speaker 4: off for the top spot. It's just like everybody homeboys
- 51:17Speaker 4: and everybody just nice and it's all friendly. It's just
- 51:21Speaker 4: it sucks to work there.
- 51:22Speaker 5: There's no sparks, no spirit.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Yeah, and the biggest spark is you getting in an
- 51:27Speaker 4: announcer's face that you a foot taller in and can pummel.
- 51:30Speaker 3: I saw Lisa. I saw earlier.
- 51:32Speaker 4: Today they were showing some clips of Lebron flopping oh man, okay,
- 51:41Speaker 4: and like and it's no contact, Like there's literally he's
- 51:44Speaker 4: falling and there's no contact.
- 51:46Speaker 5: And he's getting minutes of your life you'll never get back, right.
- 51:51Speaker 3: See when you okay, So I see you do that
- 51:54Speaker 3: on top of seeing you try to do this. But
- 51:59Speaker 3: I can't make you. I you know, I can't put
- 52:02Speaker 3: you in the goat conversation. I just can't.
- 52:05Speaker 4: You lost it because the goat has to be not
- 52:08Speaker 4: just I've never seen anybody. I've seen a When you
- 52:12Speaker 4: see great players who mess up, do something wrong, get
- 52:16Speaker 4: kicked out of the league, we say, oh, you know what,
- 52:18Speaker 4: he could have been one of the best players ever.
- 52:21Speaker 3: Yeah, when you mess up.
- 52:24Speaker 2: You.
- 52:25Speaker 4: You you don't get to get in the conversation of
- 52:28Speaker 4: being the best you could have been. I ain't gona
- 52:30Speaker 4: kick him out the time. I'm not kicking him out.
- 52:32Speaker 4: I thinking him out.
- 52:33Speaker 3: He ain't the goat. He's a goat, but he ain't
- 52:36Speaker 3: the go.
- 52:36Speaker 4: He's a great He's one of the best players ever
- 52:40Speaker 4: to play in the NBA.
- 52:41Speaker 3: On and off the court.
- 52:42Speaker 4: I would say on Jefnedy, he's playing longevity. All that
- 52:48Speaker 4: family man, all that my trouble. I appreciate that. I
- 52:50Speaker 4: appreciate the flat family man. But you let your family,
- 52:54Speaker 4: You let your Yeah, you let your family might need you.
- 52:59Speaker 4: You you what you did with your family is you
- 53:07Speaker 4: tried to make you tried to bulldog him into being an.
- 53:11Speaker 3: Nb NBA player like you. He ain't like you. He
- 53:17Speaker 3: ain't like you, because if he was like you, you
- 53:20Speaker 3: don't even have to bother. I know the second son
- 53:23Speaker 3: is like him. The second one is like that. Okay,
- 53:25Speaker 3: this one is not because because because yeah.
- 53:28Speaker 4: The second Bryce I think is his name and the
- 53:30Speaker 4: thing that and the thing that I think that Lebron
- 53:32Speaker 4: should have looked at is okay he when you came through,
- 53:37Speaker 4: you came through straight through like every everybody was looking
- 53:40Speaker 4: at you.
- 53:41Speaker 3: Everybody wanted you, everybody. He had the most pressure of
- 53:43Speaker 3: any history. Okay he did.
- 53:46Speaker 4: Now, when you look at your when you look at
- 53:49Speaker 4: your son, do you see that, do you see that
- 53:54Speaker 4: storm of people like, oh, we gotta get Bronnie, we
- 53:58Speaker 4: gotta get her. If you do, and it's a whole
- 54:02Speaker 4: it's a lot to that.
- 54:03Speaker 9: Yeah.
- 54:03Speaker 4: Yeah. And if you don't do it, like if you
- 54:06Speaker 4: don't see it bright, you gotta let him. You gotta
- 54:09Speaker 4: let him sit on the side, but get him a
- 54:10Speaker 4: good seat, get him a good seat.
- 54:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 54:16Speaker 5: I think we pressed up here on.
- 54:20Speaker 3: I just got I just felt like it was a
- 54:23Speaker 3: bad situation. I just thought it was a bad situation
- 54:26Speaker 3: that just was not conducive of goat behavior. Like I said,
- 54:30Speaker 3: you just don't.
- 54:31Speaker 4: Again, we're talking about him in the context of being
- 54:34Speaker 4: a professional athlete. I don't think I've ever heard anybody
- 54:38Speaker 4: say anything personal about that young man.
- 54:40Speaker 3: It ain't nothing nothing. Person is just professional athlete. That's
- 54:45Speaker 3: just Lebron. It's just Lebron's this ship.
- 54:46Speaker 5: Yeah, and we have to throw some kudos out to
- 54:48Speaker 5: Stephen A. Smith. I thought he handled this pretty well.
- 54:51Speaker 6: I mean, I've seen some AI stuff out there that
- 54:53Speaker 6: was totally fake that, you know, gave another perspective that
- 54:56Speaker 6: overall the interviews, he's been very you know, down to
- 54:59Speaker 6: earth about the explanations of how it happened and why
- 55:02Speaker 6: it happened, and he's he's been gracious.

- 55:06Speaker 4: hundred million dollar deal with esp I wouldn't.
- 55:09Speaker 3: Got me another honeymoon.
