- 0:08Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to another episode of Two Shot
- 0:10Tuesday, Barry Nixon with the one and only Jason Riley.
- 0:13We are very pleased to be with you once again, the podcast you
- 0:16can consume and we invite you to whenever you have a break at
- 0:20work. And Jason, you've been working
- 0:22hard, as have I. But before we talk about how
- 0:25hard we we work here at Two Shot Studios, let's wet our whistles
- 0:30with our first shot of the evening.
- 0:32And then let's dive headlong into this thing, because it is
- 0:34damn cold out there, Jay. It sure is, Barry, but we're
- 0:39going to be warmed up and I have a feeling we may sync up on our
- 0:41shot if it's the same as the last little while.
- 0:44I'm going to the Bear face, one of our favorites from the
- 0:46Whiskey Global. I continue to enjoy that bottle.
- 0:49How? What have you got?
- 0:50Jay, we are perfectly In Sync, my friend.
- 0:53Here's to you. Cheers.
- 0:57Yeah, Jay, once you put that in my mind about the Maple syrup,
- 1:01that's all I taste now. Yeah, I was.
- 1:04Fantastic. The notes change a bit, like I'm
- 1:06getting less of the Maple syrup on this one, huh?
- 1:09I'm getting more or. Maybe more, I got a little more
- 1:12heat than I did the last time we had this.
- 1:14So and you've got, maybe you've got more of the Maple syrup in
- 1:16that syrup in that bottle. I'm not sure exactly how the
- 1:19levels work, but I'm enjoying it.
- 1:22Bear Face Whiskey. I'm glad we discovered that one.
- 1:25I'm glad it was our first stop on the tour at the Whiskey
- 1:29Global that we continue to discuss.
- 1:31We enjoyed it so much. It was fantastic.
- 1:33And one last thing before we move on.
- 1:35It's Canadian. Yeah, we know how important it
- 1:37is to support Canada and all Canadian products, whether they
- 1:41be liquid or whether they be something you can sit on.
- 1:43Support Canada. We're all about that here.
- 1:45Even gaseous ones, Yeah, solid, liquid, gaseous.
- 1:50So if there's a gaseous product that you're thinking of that's
- 1:53Canadian and you have an option, go with the Canadian gas.
- 1:57Yeah, that's a, that's a good call.
- 1:59All right, let's get into this thing, Jim.
- 2:01All right, let's do it. You know what?
- 2:02This is a pretty big episode just from the way that you kind
- 2:06of pumped it up today because you have quite a dilemma on your
- 2:09hands, Mr. Nixon, and I'm here to help solve that dilemma.
- 2:13Why don't you share with our listeners, with our viewers
- 2:16exactly what you what? What's what's tearing at you?
- 2:19Hey. What's tearing at you?
- 2:20What's making you consider ending your own life?
- 2:23It's not that bad, but I will say this, I have put my
- 2:27entertainment for the evening, the fate, my fate in your
- 2:31capable hands because arriving today at The Newsroom was 2K
- 2:37releases and I don't know which one to choose.
- 2:40So, viewers and listeners, I turned this over to Jason
- 2:44because he's the only guy who I trust to make this decision on
- 2:47my behalf. I got Shin Godzilla in 4K, the
- 2:51limited steelbook. We've heard good things and John
- 2:55Carpenter's part of his Apocalypse trilogy in the Mouth
- 2:59of Madness starring Sam Neil, and that came in the Super
- 3:02deluxe Arrow release. Jay you may want to.
- 3:05I know you haven't seen it, but maybe when you do see it, you
- 3:07might want to consider Arrow always does a great job with all
- 3:10their supplements. I got to tell you, I love all
- 3:12the extra non disc swag that they include.
- 3:15And this thing is it looks like a Bible, Jay.
- 3:17It's thick and it's and it's going to look fantastic on my
- 3:20shelf anyway. I've turned it entirely to you.
- 3:24My fate is in your hands, Sir. Well, because we've got to
- 3:27stretch on for a few more minutes, I'm going to ask you
- 3:29questions to help us get to the right solution for you.
- 3:33I do want to say the only my first foray into Arrow is was
- 3:38the spawn release. No extra swag, no real steel
- 3:43book of any kind really. I don't want to say it was let
- 3:46down, but it was that was a bit of a disappointment.
- 3:49But I am, as you know, I have a purchase in from Arrow US and
- 3:54I'm excited to have one of their exclusives come.
- 3:55I'll talk about that in December when it arrives.
- 3:58Yeah, that's a good call. Now why you didn't get the extra
- 4:01stuff, Jay is usually if you are going to get an extra bit from
- 4:05Arrow, you got to look for the letters L&E beside the release.
- 4:10If you see that, then yeah, well, there you go.
- 4:13They just sort of shipped it and that's fine.
- 4:15Not every release needs to be as thick as the Bible, but some do,
- 4:19and so I invite you to look for that next time you decide to
- 4:22buy. Yeah, I guess they weren't
- 4:23expecting Spawn to be a real big seller enough for them to go
- 4:27through the effort of, you know, some of the extra work that they
- 4:31would have, the extra cost of bringing in, which I'm sure they
- 4:33would have passed along to me. So it would have been nice to
- 4:35have, especially because it was. And I don't want to detract from
- 4:38your two choices, but just while we're on the Arrow releases,
- 4:41because it's based on a Todd McFarlane Image crop comics
- 4:45property. Like, he's an artist, he's a
- 4:47writer. It could have come with a signed
- 4:49first issue of the comic. It could have come with so many
- 4:52different things, character sketches, the development of
- 4:55these characters because they had been around for years before
- 4:58being there. So if I'm an Arrow, I'm like,
- 5:01you didn't just miss that. They didn't just miss that fact.
- 5:03There was a conscious choice to said no, no, no plastic case
- 5:06sleeve, one disc, special features on that disc and that's
- 5:12it. Not Blu-ray with the special
- 5:14features. Ship it, get it done.
- 5:16Not that cheap and we're going to pocket this money from the
- 5:20suckers that like Spawn, which is not a great movie, but
- 5:23fantastic looking, I will say that.
- 5:25Fantastic restoration and we're going to invest that money into
- 5:28things like what's the movie you got?
- 5:30What's the name in the mouth of Vadnais?
- 5:32Part of the John Carpenter Apocalypse Trilogy?
- 5:35J This movie needed to be handled with a little more
- 5:38loving care, and clearly they've done that, at least from the
- 5:41from the packaging perspective. OK, so we've talked about that.
- 5:45Let's talk about let's get you to a movie this evening, shall
- 5:48we? Let's get you to a movie.
- 5:50I need something to do Jay. I need your help.
- 5:51Let's. Shin Godzilla that you purchased
- 5:54when I brought it up because you're such a fan of Godzilla -1
- 5:59And I had been served up a Google ad for Shin Godzilla
- 6:03saying it was being released again in theaters.
- 6:06And it had been I think in Japan, maybe limited release as
- 6:10well in the US and even Canada. And this was one that we had
- 6:13missed. This was, I believe, a 2016 that
- 6:15has been called superior to Godzilla -1.
- 6:20Right. And when I read that, yeah, it
- 6:22is that you're treading on some sacred ground, because I really
- 6:25couldn't find a single thing wrong with -1 I thought -1 was
- 6:28amazing. Probably the best of the bunch.
- 6:31So could this be perfection on top of perfection?
- 6:35Like just because 1 is. Better perfection, Jay.
- 6:39Double perfection, perfection plus one because you have, you
- 6:42have Godzilla -1 perfection plus one.
- 6:45Well done. So perhaps this could be an
- 6:49absolute like don't go in there looking for issues.
- 6:53I would say when you do watch this, and you will watch both at
- 6:56some point, it's not like we're throwing one away.
- 6:58No, we're not. It's a first.
- 6:59So I want you to because I'm, I'm a little worried you might
- 7:02be going in looking for flaws that will sort of dispute
- 7:07knocking this precious Godzilla -1 from its perch.
- 7:10I don't want that. Because let's keep in mind,
- 7:12Barry, you now own both. They're both your children.
- 7:15And you know, as I've heard well described about children, I've
- 7:19heard there was a father that said with children, multiple
- 7:23children. I do play favorites.
- 7:26But that changes. From day-to-day.
- 7:28So I Ioffer that wisdom to you, Barry.
- 7:31What do you think? Thank you.
- 7:33As a couple of non dads, this is amazing stuff.
- 7:35Yeah, it really is now. OK, I took your advice, in fact.
- 7:41Well, I guess ultimately it was Google that served it to you,
- 7:44but then you felt it incumbent upon you to serve it to me.
- 7:47So thank you for doing that. I've not seen in Godzilla, so I
- 7:50purchased this sight unseen, Jay, based on your
- 7:53recommendation. Also on the tomato score, which
- 7:56is very high, they said it's quite different though in terms
- 7:59of like this one is more Godzilla is.
- 8:03I think he's kind of more sinister, whereas in -1 he
- 8:07looked to be a little bit like he was trying to help.
- 8:11And so this one is more like back to him just wanting to
- 8:15destroy things and, you know, in inflicting terror on the the
- 8:18city of Tokyo. So I don't know.
- 8:22Now they both have subtitles. Sometimes when people are tired,
- 8:24they don't want to read. So I'm not saying I'm tired
- 8:27today, but. These are factors, Jay.
- 8:30These are facts. How are you feeling?
- 8:31How are you? Feeling great, in fact.
- 8:33So you could read for an hour, 45, two hours.
- 8:36You're, I hope, decided to fold too, but it might be I I didn't
- 8:40check. The run.
- 8:40So that's important too. I hadn't even considered your,
- 8:42your, you know, emotional and physical well-being at this
- 8:45point, so. Well, some of that factors to
- 8:47picking a movie, Jay. Yeah, Shin Godzilla's I
- 8:50understand it was the license coming back to Toho or they had
- 8:54moved away now from these US? Toho, OK.
- 8:59They license it out to be and so they've licensed it out to the
- 9:02US group that made the Kong Godzilla and all that kind of
- 9:05stuff. Now they've brought it back and
- 9:07Shin Godzilla was kind of, as I understand it, their reset and
- 9:11things were going to go from there.
- 9:12But then somehow, and I don't know how Godzilla -1 came into
- 9:16play. So they obviously made a very
- 9:18different movie. I, I, they have licensed it to
- 9:20two different studios. I'm not sure how that works.
- 9:23Right. Yeah.
- 9:24So either way, I'm excited to see it and I got to say it is a
- 9:27very handsome steel book. So they did a nice job with the
- 9:30packaging. Important.
- 9:32So that is important. You know, let's talk about the
- 9:35mouth of madness for a minute. Let's do it inside the mouth of
- 9:38madness. The mouth of madness.
- 9:39Just in the mouth. In the Mouth of Madness, Yeah.
- 9:43Part 2. Part 1.
- 9:44Part 3 of the trilogy. That's a good question.
- 9:48I don't know. I know it's just part of said
- 9:50trilogy. I don't know where it sits and I
- 9:54if you were to press me on, what are the other two?
- 9:57We'd have to. We'll be right back.
- 9:59It would be one of those. Situations.
- 10:01OK, I see. Yeah, but.
- 10:03It's irregardless. It is in the mouth of madness,
- 10:06yeah. In the mouth of Madness.
- 10:08So we don't know that it's like it's not built like a Star Wars
- 10:11trilogy where one builds another.
- 10:13It's more thematic, the trilogy, right?
- 10:14Is that true? That is my understanding, Jay,
- 10:18from the minimal amount of research that I.
- 10:20Did great. So so you could be walking into
- 10:23a Part 2. And so I'm also concerned about
- 10:25this. I don't want you to be confused
- 10:27for a lot of the night. So if you're coming in on a
- 10:30hard, hard Part 2, you could have little satisfaction going
- 10:34in and then be left hanging if it's a true trilogy.
- 10:38I don't think you feel about that.
- 10:40I think you hit it earlier. I think it's trilogy in in theme
- 10:44only. They're not connected stories.
- 10:46Got it. OK.
- 10:47That's important so that that sort of puts the cities as you
- 10:50can go in and enjoy this as a complete movie in itself.
- 10:53Now I do have a question about runtimes.
- 10:55You may not know the answer to this.
- 10:56What are the runtimes of each film?
- 10:58Do you have any idea? That's a great question as well,
- 11:00Jay, a very well thought out question.
- 11:02And unfortunately, I do not at this time have the answer, but I
- 11:07do hope it's sub the two hours because as you know, that's the
- 11:10the wheelhouse that you and I like to live in for when it
- 11:13comes to movies nowadays. OK, so there's hope.
- 11:15We're going by hope it's around 2 hours.
- 11:17Hope Godzilla -1 was just about two hours if I remember
- 11:21correctly. I think it was, yeah, it was
- 11:23like 2 O1. It was like just crested two if
- 11:25I recall. But that was you didn't feel
- 11:27that runtime, Jay. And I challenge anybody who says
- 11:30that they felt that runtime. Yeah, to.
- 11:32Yeah, but but it gives us a window into what Shin might be.
- 11:36And then on John Carpenter, his movies are usually in then like
- 11:401:45 to 2:00 or like 145 range. Yeah, they don't overstay their
- 11:45welcome. So that's good.
- 11:46So it kind of gives us an idea. Like us?
- 11:48Yeah, it's a movie you can enjoy on your break if your break was
- 11:51a full 2 hours. Yeah, exactly.
- 11:54OK, so we got, we think we're safe on the sequels.
- 11:56How are you feeling about the look?
- 11:59So one's a steel book, the other's not, Or they're both
- 12:01steel books. Yeah, Arrow doesn't really do
- 12:03steel books. That's one thing you'll notice.
- 12:06So. That's not a steel book.
- 12:08So the one's plastic and the other's a steel book.
- 12:11Right, but the arrow 1 is, like I said, is is thick as a Bible.
- 12:14So it's it's a loaded package. It's a handsome package, but
- 12:18it's just not made of steel. Whereas the Shin Godzilla, they,
- 12:21they made it steel, which is cool.
- 12:25So how are you feeling then? And that's why where I'm getting
- 12:27to this tonight. How do you feel your Dexterity
- 12:30Steel books are very easy to open.
- 12:31Everything's contained. This other one is quite large
- 12:35and you might feel the need to kind of flip through.
- 12:37Are you kind of in a in a restless mood where you would
- 12:40like to flip through things like lobby cards and booklets?
- 12:42I might I might like to do a little flipping and check out
- 12:45those lobby cards. And also, you're right about
- 12:47having more non disc swag in the package, but it all kind of
- 12:51slides out at the same time and then you're kind of fumbling for
- 12:54a second or two. So is it as smooth a, you know,
- 12:58operation as just popping the disk out of the steelbook?
- 13:01Probably not. But how are you feeling tonight?
- 13:04I the way I kind of hear it is you're OK with that?
- 13:06You wouldn't mind maybe flipping looking at some things, OK.
- 13:09I'm ready to flip, Jack. I think I've made a decision
- 13:14and. Should we have our second shot
- 13:16before you render said decision? Yeah, I could see you have the
- 13:19face of a true adjudicator you have, given you've weighed all
- 13:23the facts and the case. I can't wait to see what I'm
- 13:26going to be watching tonight. Jay, it's some Bare Face whiskey
- 13:30coming right at you. And you called me the face of an
- 13:33adjudicator. The bare face of an adjudicator.
- 13:36Right here. Outstanding.
- 13:38Cheers. We're still getting that Maple
- 13:42syrup, Jay. Yeah, it's.
- 13:44Perfect time of year for this kind of whiskey.
- 13:47It really is. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 13:48We're tapping the trees and we're getting the syrup.
- 13:50I love that. Meanwhile, Bearface is writing
- 13:52us going, there's no Maple syrup in this guy's.
- 13:54Could you stop saying Maple can? You stop saying that.
- 13:56Yeah, but it's just the notes, like you said.
- 13:58The notes, Jay. Notes you want to hear, you
- 14:01know, that's what you get. And maybe if not, if there's no
- 14:05Maple syrup, perhaps a line extension, maybe two shot
- 14:09Tuesday presents bare face with Maple syrup because we all
- 14:14connect, OK? We'll talk.
- 14:15I love it. Here's what I think.
- 14:18All right, here's what I think. I think that I think that
- 14:22there's AI see a little hesitation on your part.
- 14:25I think I hit not a nerve, but I hit the right tenor when I'm
- 14:27like, you might be right, Willie, looking to find faults
- 14:31in Shin Godzilla that aren't there that you won't appreciate
- 14:33finding. If you can kind of watch it when
- 14:35you're in a more relaxed mode, when you're like, God, I got to
- 14:38watch this movie. So that's one thing I noticed.
- 14:41The second is you didn't seem very concerned about walking
- 14:45into the middle of the trilogy and you're kind of set that it's
- 14:49thematic and you're pretty comfortable with it being
- 14:51thematic. But either way, the Barry T
- 14:53Nixon I know is a risk taker and a risk taker will go into the
- 14:57middle of a trilogy and go what, what, what's going on?
- 14:59I don't care. I'm enjoying it.
- 15:02Exactly. Yeah, you'll take it, the bull
- 15:04by the horns. And I also think that if you did
- 15:06get a bit confused, you might like to have some lobby cards to
- 15:09flip through while you're doing. Also reading after a long day at
- 15:12the office, working hard, doing a podcast on top of that can be
- 15:17fairly challenging. And I don't want you to lose any
- 15:19of ruling. Some might say Jay.
- 15:21Yeah, exactly. So for those reasons, I think
- 15:24we're already leaning. It's in the Mouth of Madness is
- 15:26what I think would be your best watch.
- 15:29OK, Jay, thank you very much. I will watch that and I will
- 15:32tell you all about it. Well, I will tell you some
- 15:35things about it because you haven't seen it.
- 15:37It's a great 1 and I do want us to watch it together at some
- 15:40point in the future, but I'll give you a spoiler free 30,000
- 15:46Foot View review. OK I love this for our listeners
- 15:51and our viewers. Before we go, want to do 1 quick
- 15:54RIP from the headlines? I do.
- 15:56I'm glad that we still have time.
- 15:57We do. We have time.
- 15:58We have time for a quick one. Here we go.
- 16:01Let's do interesting from thebbc.com.
- 16:04You've sent me this headline and I'm going to read just the
- 16:07headline. For those joining us for the
- 16:08first time, we give you the news one headline at a time.
- 16:12We don't go past the headline and we discuss it and we'll give
- 16:14you the full story. Here it is.
- 16:16Willpower doesn't exist, period. Why?
- 16:21So much of your health isn't your fault, Right?
- 16:24Somber. Yeah.
- 16:25Yeah. I feel like I'm.
- 16:26I'm hearing the goodwill hunting.
- 16:28It's not your fault. It's not your fault.
- 16:30It almost sounds like they're trying to let you off the hook
- 16:32for bad habits, Jay. Yeah.
- 16:35Doesn't that kind of feel like that?
- 16:37Oh, it's OK that you're not feeling great, or you're little,
- 16:40perhaps a little sluggish or whatever.
- 16:43It's not you. It's the medical system or it's
- 16:46the environment. I don't know.
- 16:47Or it's in your genes. It's like a genetic blame for a
- 16:50lot of these things. But basically it's saying
- 16:52willpower doesn't exist. So if it doesn't exist, so there
- 16:56we go. But if we take the headline and
- 16:58and as fact that willpower doesn't exist, what could be the
- 17:02thing that gets people to take on challenges and actually do?
- 17:05Like you quit smoking on a dime at one point in your life.
- 17:09Nicotine gone, didn't look back. That's true.
- 17:13There's got to be some willpower, or at least some
- 17:14resolve, or what I like to call good old Barry Teenix and
- 17:17gumption. That's very nice of you, Jay.
- 17:19I was also a very young man when I decided to hang up my spurs
- 17:23when it came to tobacco, I think.
- 17:25In the woods. The only real motivator if
- 17:28willpower doesn't exist. If we're going to proceed with
- 17:30the assumption that it doesn't exist, the only thing I can
- 17:33think of that would motivate someone to change their life is
- 17:36to see examples in other people of what they might like to
- 17:40achieve. You know what I mean?
- 17:42So like if someone wants to change their body, for example,
- 17:45you might look to someone who is in shape and say, I want to
- 17:49emulate that person. Whatever they're doing, I'd like
- 17:51to do that. Too.
- 17:52Yeah, maybe it's, yeah, maybe it's.
- 17:55Yeah, exactly. So finding inspiration as
- 17:57opposed to willpower and then just having the, like, momentum
- 18:02to go on. You got to have a plan, some
- 18:05momentum. So that's, yeah, I think that's
- 18:08an interesting thing. Yeah.
- 18:09Now, do you think willpower is a real thing or not a real thing?
- 18:14I, I think I'm with you. I think it's more like you have
- 18:17a goal and you're kind of working towards it and you
- 18:20understand the consequences of making say bad choices or
- 18:24choices off of the path and you have to keep focused towards it.
- 18:27So maybe it's not so much will this kind of hanging on to
- 18:30something as aspirational, something that you're working
- 18:33towards. Yeah, so I agree.
- 18:36Perhaps willpower is dead. So if we agree with the first
- 18:38part of that or take it as it is, I'm just looking again, why
- 18:42so much of your health isn't your fault?
- 18:44Yeah, that's where. That's a bit.
- 18:47That that part kind of loses me a little bit because it it's
- 18:51kind of giving you an out. It's like letting you off the
- 18:53hook before you've even tried to maybe to do something like,
- 18:57yeah, you know what I mean? So I'm not sure that that's
- 18:59necessarily a positive thing if people are truly trying to
- 19:02change something in their life that isn't working to give them
- 19:06an out in the first head like at the second sentence.
- 19:10Is, yeah. I don't know, I'm just not sure
- 19:12and you should. Try it like I had like I'll
- 19:16share before we go on it is time to run.
- 19:18But like I had, I'm now taking a statin something for cholesterol
- 19:22that I had to take because it was up.
- 19:24And I said, before you put me on it, I want to have, you know,
- 19:27give me 60 days to just eat healthy.
- 19:29And I did I cooked. I you saw me.
- 19:31I was doing the Taco thing where I was had I had a wrap and
- 19:33chicken and I like, I was making it all home for like 60 days and
- 19:37I went hard and it just didn't come down enough.
- 19:39And then they said you should have this.
- 19:40It's mostly genetics and I took it and now it's down and
- 19:44everything's fine. So I, I couldn't get there a
- 19:47willpower alone, but I work towards it.
- 19:49And now I found that right balance and occasionally you
- 19:51need a little help from a little pink pill and that was fine in
- 19:54that case. So I don't know where I'm going
- 19:57with that, but it's like that, that health wasn't my fault.
- 19:59It wasn't because I was eating so terribly up to this point.
- 20:02It just I was more predisposed to have and, and it is in my
- 20:06family, I was more predisposed to have that.
- 20:08But there are solutions that I can work on to to do better.
- 20:12That's true. You can't change your genetics,
- 20:14but you can change your attitude, and I think that's a
- 20:17nice thing to leave our viewers and listeners with on this
- 20:20week's episode. We will be with you again next
- 20:23week as always, and we love being with you.
- 20:25And if you have anything you'd like us to discuss, leave
- 20:29something in the comments. So you guys should talk about X,
- 20:32because if one thing Jason and I are always up for, it's lively
- 20:36chat about things we don't necessarily know much about.
- 20:39So that's right. That's us.
