- 1:33Speaker 4: All right, ladies and gentlemen, Today today's show, we're gonna
- 1:36Speaker 4: we're gonna address I don't know if I want to
- 1:39Speaker 4: use that word. We're gonna discuss youth football. We're gonna
- 1:44Speaker 4: talk about, you know, what the experience is like in
- 1:48Speaker 4: coaching it, and what is the experience in all of
- 1:54Speaker 4: the challenges that come with it, and a lot of
- 1:57Speaker 4: times when we're talking about that, we're talking about, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 4: the league breakups and and what that does too.
- 2:07Speaker 2: To some of the parents and how the parents feel.
- 2:10Speaker 4: And I've got and I'm gonna introduce them here in
- 2:13Speaker 4: just a second, but I've got two South Charleston coaches
- 2:16Speaker 4: here today to kind of kind of kind of give
- 2:18Speaker 4: the insight to what it is that they go through coaching.
- 2:24Speaker 4: Both of them have situations where they're coaching their son.
- 2:28Speaker 4: Because that'll obviously be a conversation, you know, as the
- 2:31Speaker 4: term as as we know it as daddy ball. A
- 2:36Speaker 4: lot of parents are upset when they see that. So
- 2:42Speaker 4: let me let me introduce my one of my one
- 2:49Speaker 4: of my really really really really good friends that I
- 2:52Speaker 4: have uh had the opportunity to to meet in youth football,
- 3:01Speaker 4: mister Kinder. And what what what what makes what makes
- 3:06Speaker 4: this relationship really struggle is that he is a diehard
- 3:11Speaker 4: Packer fan. And I don't know if I've ever actually
- 3:14Speaker 4: asked you, how did you become a Packer fan?
- 3:17Speaker 2: I want to ask you that.
- 3:18Speaker 5: All right. So I was about seven years old whenever
- 3:22Speaker 5: I've become a green Bay fan. We were sitting in
- 3:24Speaker 5: my living room watching the green Bay game and I'm
- 3:28Speaker 5: pretty sure it was a Thanksgiving game against the Detroit Lions,
- 3:32Speaker 5: and we intercepted a ball and they formed a circle.
- 3:37Speaker 2: You notice that you're saying we yeah.
- 3:39Speaker 6: Okay, yeah, Well you know I am a Packer.
- 3:42Speaker 5: Okay, I'm working on getting a part of the ownership.
- 3:46Speaker 2: Okay, I'm with you.
- 3:48Speaker 5: So green Bay, they intercepted the ball, they formed a
- 3:51Speaker 5: circle around the guy that intercepted the ball, and he
- 3:54Speaker 5: ran it back for a touchdown. I just thought that
- 3:56Speaker 5: was the coolest thing ever. And I've been in cheesehead
- 3:58Speaker 5: ever since.
- 3:59Speaker 4: Okay, I guess I can't hold that against you. A
- 4:03Speaker 4: father of six. Yep has been coaching for five years
- 4:08Speaker 4: at South Charleston. Also coaches basketball in the basketball league
- 4:13Speaker 4: for a church league. That's been for seven years, or
- 4:21Speaker 4: that's the seven years with youth football.
- 4:23Speaker 5: Yeah, seven years with you football. We're going on our
- 4:25Speaker 5: fourth year at New.
- 4:26Speaker 2: Fire Beast and you're over and you run that.
- 4:28Speaker 5: I do, yes, Me and my wife we run that
- 4:30Speaker 5: ministry out of our Church's becoming pretty successful.
- 4:33Speaker 2: That's good. That's good stuff, all right.
- 4:36Speaker 4: And Fred Fred Waldern and Fred has been with us
- 4:41Speaker 4: season four seasons.
- 4:43Speaker 7: Four seasons, coaching three.
- 4:44Speaker 2: And you also coach your son.
- 4:47Speaker 4: Tell us a little bit about your relationship and coaching
- 4:50Speaker 4: before I kind of give you a little bit more
- 4:52Speaker 4: of an introduction. Tell us a little bit about your
- 4:55Speaker 4: son and the relationship that you and him have, because
- 4:57Speaker 4: I think it's a really special relationship that that I
- 5:00Speaker 4: don't know if everybody knows it, and I think it's
- 5:02Speaker 4: something important to know.
- 5:04Speaker 7: This one's a little different. You had mentioned the daddy
- 5:07Speaker 7: bass situation. I'm one of the coaches now that I
- 5:10Speaker 7: prefer not to coach my kid. I prefer to This year,
- 5:13Speaker 7: I stood back and let you know, kinder take the
- 5:16Speaker 7: reins and step up and give him more, you know,
- 5:19Speaker 7: of an opportunity. And I've held back and stayed with
- 5:22Speaker 7: the younger league, by the younger players. But starting off
- 5:28Speaker 7: our first season with him, me coaching with him, you know,
- 5:31Speaker 7: it was a little rocky. You know, it was hard
- 5:34Speaker 7: to just you know, juggle that coach on the field
- 5:37Speaker 7: and at home. Right this thing between him and I,
- 5:42Speaker 7: and I pulled the trigger and I was like, I
- 5:44Speaker 7: think this year I want to kind of kick him
- 5:46Speaker 7: off the kender and let kinder coach him and other coaches,
- 5:50Speaker 7: you know, to step back and stay with the little guys,
- 5:53Speaker 7: which I do prefer coaching the smaller little you know,
- 5:56Speaker 7: the little guys that just come into it.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Okay, And he's forty three years old and has lived
- 6:03Speaker 4: in South Trust in his entire life. And he's been
- 6:06Speaker 4: with the football program for four seasons now. So anytime,
- 6:14Speaker 4: ladies and gentlemen, when we start talking about news football,
- 6:18Speaker 4: it's always kind of touchy. It's always somewhat of a
- 6:24Speaker 4: of somebody gets hurt, somebody gets you know, they get
- 6:28Speaker 4: mad at what we say or what we don't say,
- 6:30Speaker 4: or you know, why did we say that? And and
- 6:35Speaker 4: I want to make the case that youth football K
- 6:40Speaker 4: through six is the development age of the future kids
- 6:49Speaker 4: who are going to play in middle school and high school,
- 6:56Speaker 4: and winning, while everybody loves to win, yeah, cannot be
- 7:05Speaker 4: the the ultimate goal.
- 7:08Speaker 5: No, And I think I think that's exactly the path
- 7:11Speaker 5: that we're going down.
- 7:12Speaker 6: That's wrong, in my opinion, in youth football.
- 7:16Speaker 4: So elaborate a little bit. What what what what does it?
- 7:20Speaker 4: How does it bother you? And what what are you
- 7:22Speaker 4: seeing that you think makes it that we're heading down
- 7:26Speaker 4: that way?
- 7:27Speaker 5: Well? I, uh, back when my oldest son he started
- 7:30Speaker 5: playing for a Tornado, I noticed that when I taking
- 7:34Speaker 5: the practice, they had a pretty good squad, you know
- 7:36Speaker 5: what I mean, they were good back then.
- 7:39Speaker 6: They were.
- 7:39Speaker 5: And I noticed that he played on the line because
- 7:42Speaker 5: he was a little bit heathier back then.
- 7:43Speaker 6: And and uh.
- 7:45Speaker 5: They never once in six weeks showed the lineman how
- 7:49Speaker 5: the block, showed him anything. They they focused mainly on
- 7:53Speaker 5: their running backs and getting them out on the edge
- 7:57Speaker 5: and scoring and they were good at it. But uh,
- 8:00Speaker 5: you know, I mean they never taught to kids anything right,
- 8:04Speaker 5: and you can still see that today with you know,
- 8:07Speaker 5: everybody's talking about, well we beat down this team forty
- 8:10Speaker 5: two to nothing. We beat this kid this team thirty
- 8:13Speaker 5: to nothing. You know, and you never see them actually
- 8:16Speaker 5: out there showing the kids how to properly block or
- 8:20Speaker 5: that any of the fundamentals blocking and tackling any of that.
- 8:24Speaker 6: You know. So I'm one of.
- 8:26Speaker 5: The coaches that will tell you straight up that win
- 8:30Speaker 5: is the least important thing that I care about. You know,
- 8:32Speaker 5: your kids safety is by far my most priority, and
- 8:37Speaker 5: teaching them the fundamentals and development of the game would
- 8:40Speaker 5: be the second.
- 8:41Speaker 4: So and Fred, you've had an opportunity to to to
- 8:47Speaker 4: watch and to coach. Yes, how different is it when
- 8:54Speaker 4: you're not coaching compared to actually physically being out there
- 8:58Speaker 4: and you're again you're with the young eat the k
- 9:01Speaker 4: through choos, so you're out there with them.
- 9:05Speaker 2: It is. It's got to be a difference.
- 9:08Speaker 7: Well, I'm open minded. When we first put Tanner into
- 9:12Speaker 7: football my first season, I got to watch Kender. It's
- 9:15Speaker 7: Kender's reason why I am in football and coaching in football.
- 9:18Speaker 7: He pulled me in the last bit of the season
- 9:20Speaker 7: that we were parents and you know, supporting our kids
- 9:23Speaker 7: and the players. You know, when I was there, I
- 9:28Speaker 7: had already some experience at that, you know, dealing with
- 9:31Speaker 7: the teaching kids and stuff was my previous place of employment,
- 9:35Speaker 7: you know, knowing that, hey, it's tough, it's a you know,
- 9:38Speaker 7: you got to be out there and understand what they're
- 9:40Speaker 7: going through. You know, every you know, every coach is different,
- 9:44Speaker 7: but there's you know, pretty much only one group of
- 9:47Speaker 7: parents for those players. And you know, when you step
- 9:50Speaker 7: out on the field, it is a complete different ball
- 9:52Speaker 7: game when you're coming to coaching the kids. I mean,
- 9:54Speaker 7: everybody things speaking, go out there and just tell this
- 9:57Speaker 7: kid this and they get at that moment or kill us.
- 9:59Speaker 7: Tell us kid not to do this, and they'll stop
- 10:01Speaker 7: that moment. You know, it's a big difference between being
- 10:05Speaker 7: a parent and being a coach.
- 10:07Speaker 4: I had asked one of the gentlemen from our practice
- 10:11Speaker 4: that comes to our practice a bunch, and I asked him,
- 10:15Speaker 4: you know, about the possibility.
- 10:17Speaker 2: Would he be willing to coach.
- 10:21Speaker 4: And he and he responded, he said, no, you know,
- 10:26Speaker 4: I just don't think I could I could do it.
- 10:29Speaker 4: And when I hear that, you know, I think I
- 10:35Speaker 4: think parents, and I think if you've got a kid,
- 10:40Speaker 4: if you've got a young kid, and all of a
- 10:42Speaker 4: sudden you want to take on for us, maybe fifteen
- 10:46Speaker 4: or eighteen kids all in and around that same age.
- 10:52Speaker 4: That's a that's a challenge because you're trying to get
- 10:54Speaker 4: these kids to actually to pay attention Unlike the classroom
- 11:01Speaker 4: like yesterday when when when we took a break, when
- 11:04Speaker 4: when when the younger kids took the break, and I
- 11:07Speaker 4: and and maybe your team was out there too. They're
- 11:09Speaker 4: grabbing stuff, they're swinging stuff and hitting each other. They're
- 11:14Speaker 4: like having they have fun anytime other than when they're
- 11:18Speaker 4: locked into the idea of actually participating in a drill.
- 11:25Speaker 4: How do you how do you mentally? And and and
- 11:28Speaker 4: of course I did. I'll tell them myself. I was
- 11:32Speaker 4: I was working for you a little bit yesterday and
- 11:36Speaker 4: and went off on the kids because they weren't paying attention.
- 11:39Speaker 4: You know, how do you how do you? How do
- 11:42Speaker 4: you manage that both between both of you?
- 11:45Speaker 5: It can get it can get difficult at times, you
- 11:48Speaker 5: know what I mean. But I think, uh, some of
- 11:51Speaker 5: what really helps me out is that, you know, I
- 11:53Speaker 5: try to understand that they're all, you know, anywhere between
- 11:57Speaker 5: five and ten years old, you know, so they don't
- 12:00Speaker 5: really understand the you know, respect aspect of things. They
- 12:04Speaker 5: don't understand what football really demands out of you. So
- 12:09Speaker 5: it's kind of our job as their coaches to teach
- 12:12Speaker 5: them that. And that's not something that you can teach
- 12:14Speaker 5: them in six weeks in a season, right, That's something
- 12:17Speaker 5: that you have to develop over time with these kids.
- 12:20Speaker 5: And I think that's what helps me out with the
- 12:23Speaker 5: kids that I have that I've coached now for four years,
- 12:25Speaker 5: five years straight, as they have had me for so
- 12:28Speaker 5: many years, So they understand what I demand out of
- 12:31Speaker 5: them and I ask out of them, and you know,
- 12:34Speaker 5: I'll be able to say hey, you know, and they
- 12:36Speaker 5: all pay attention, but if say one of my assistants
- 12:39Speaker 5: do it, then they're not paying any attention to him whatsoever.
- 12:42Speaker 5: So I think that, you know, it takes it takes
- 12:46Speaker 5: quite some time to be able to teach these kids
- 12:49Speaker 5: that stuff, and you got to sometimes get down on
- 12:52Speaker 5: their level, you know what I mean, And understand, Listen,
- 12:54Speaker 5: I wasn't a good kid back when I was seven
- 12:57Speaker 5: years old, you know what I mean. I got thrown
- 12:59Speaker 5: out of a couple of foot ball games at seven, so
- 13:02Speaker 5: you know what I mean. So I could see that,
- 13:05Speaker 5: So you gotta kind of understand. You know, hey, look,
- 13:07Speaker 5: you know, let me walk you over here and sets
- 13:09Speaker 5: you down and find out what's really happening and why
- 13:12Speaker 5: you're acting the way you're acting, and then we can
- 13:15Speaker 5: kind of go from there and try to adjust it.
- 13:16Speaker 6: And you know what I mean.
- 13:17Speaker 4: So, Fred, you're to me when I when I I
- 13:23Speaker 4: watch you coach, when I watch your mannerisms, it's interesting
- 13:27Speaker 4: to me because your your your mannerisms as a person
- 13:32Speaker 4: is a calm, collective, thoughtful kind of individual that doesn't
- 13:38Speaker 4: always fit the coaching realm.
- 13:41Speaker 2: And and you're.
- 13:43Speaker 4: And you're good with the kids that that you deal with,
- 13:47Speaker 4: and which are the younger kids? How do you is
- 13:52Speaker 4: that just your nature that you just keep you you
- 13:55Speaker 4: push into trying to trying to work.
- 13:57Speaker 2: With these kids? I think that do you add on
- 14:01Speaker 2: to it?
- 14:01Speaker 4: Do you have to add on to that calmness and
- 14:05Speaker 4: patience to to to make it.
- 14:10Speaker 2: Work for you? Uh?
- 14:14Speaker 7: Years of like with these kids at that age. I
- 14:17Speaker 7: mean my whole life, I've been around little kids, babysitting
- 14:20Speaker 7: and all that stuff and everything. And I guess the
- 14:24Speaker 7: training I've had, you know, and of course me the
- 14:28Speaker 7: experience I've had, it's really helped me you know, I
- 14:31Speaker 7: have a lot of people come up and that's the
- 14:32Speaker 7: first thing they say, how do you have the patience
- 14:34Speaker 7: for it? How do you how do you have the
- 14:35Speaker 7: patience for it? You know? These kids, to me, I
- 14:39Speaker 7: set myself I think it's a little bit of a
- 14:40Speaker 7: challenge too, Like can I take this five year old
- 14:43Speaker 7: and this six year old and open my eyes up
- 14:46Speaker 7: at the end of the season and see him grow
- 14:48Speaker 7: progressively through the season and in a positive manner of
- 14:52Speaker 7: you know, getting better at football or behaving better. It's
- 14:56Speaker 7: you know, I look at everything was you know, I
- 14:59Speaker 7: guess it's kind of like a challenge for me. That's
- 15:01Speaker 7: why I'm getting more out of it. I was like,
- 15:03Speaker 7: I want to see these kids at the end of
- 15:04Speaker 7: the season are going up to the next level with
- 15:06Speaker 7: kinder and be successful a little bit, you know. So
- 15:11Speaker 7: and so that's what I'm kind of shooting for and
- 15:14Speaker 7: your group, the young group.
- 15:16Speaker 2: I mean, you know, for me.
- 15:19Speaker 4: I'm standing on the sidelines and I'm trying to watch
- 15:22Speaker 4: them run a play or or play defense and stop
- 15:25Speaker 4: them and I'm seeing how they didn't stop them or
- 15:29Speaker 4: oh that was a good stop. I'm not really for me,
- 15:33Speaker 4: it's it's it's a little bit harder because I'm not
- 15:36Speaker 4: hands on to see where they come from. Not that
- 15:39Speaker 4: I can't see that we can get better, and we're
- 15:42Speaker 4: getting better, but the process it must feel really, really
- 15:48Speaker 4: really good to you when you see just even like
- 15:52Speaker 4: some of the scrimmage, like the scrimmages the other day,
- 15:54Speaker 4: like you know those some of those tackles were like
- 15:57Speaker 4: big tackles, And I have to say, I have to
- 16:00Speaker 4: throw a shout out to to to.
- 16:05Speaker 2: Uh Bo. I mean.
- 16:07Speaker 4: No, no, God Bear, Yeah, I gotta throw a shout
- 16:12Speaker 4: out the bear because I'm telling you this, this young
- 16:19Speaker 4: kid gave us for the last couple of years as
- 16:25Speaker 4: no interest, like he had no interest whatsoever to really
- 16:29Speaker 4: be out there. Mom is mom is, Mama is a
- 16:32Speaker 4: great mom and and a and a and a and
- 16:35Speaker 4: a stern mom. And so once you start, you're you're finishing.
- 16:41Speaker 2: And man, some of the tackles that he's making now and.
- 16:46Speaker 4: Now he's and and everybody knows what a middle linebacker is,
- 16:49Speaker 4: and I think you all had him at middle linebacker.
- 16:51Speaker 4: So you're talking about a kid who is gone from
- 16:56Speaker 4: like is.
- 16:56Speaker 2: He even gonna? What's he doing out there?
- 16:58Speaker 4: Like there's no reason for him to be out there
- 17:00Speaker 4: to now to a middle linebacker who is making tackles
- 17:05Speaker 4: like in that scrimmage against saying he's like making solid tackles.
- 17:09Speaker 7: He made. He made some pretty solid tackles at the
- 17:12Speaker 7: previous at the grid. Yes, there too, he did very
- 17:14Speaker 7: well there. Once he gets you know, once we sit
- 17:18Speaker 7: down and say hey, this is your job, this is
- 17:20Speaker 7: what your responsibility is, he he takes into that, you know,
- 17:24Speaker 7: and you know he doesn't, you know, he'll progress a
- 17:27Speaker 7: lot quicker to me. I noticed, like just pulling him
- 17:30Speaker 7: for a second and say hey, come back here for
- 17:32Speaker 7: a second, let me talk to you. And then he
- 17:33Speaker 7: goes right back ontter and he does it, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 7: and he catches on fairly quickly on what he needs
- 17:38Speaker 7: to do.
- 17:39Speaker 5: And this is the same kid that was doing front
- 17:41Speaker 5: flips on the five yard line.
- 17:43Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, and that's that's just some that isn't
- 17:47Speaker 4: I'm telling you that, you know, because you can't see it.
- 17:51Speaker 4: You're just listening to us and assuming that we're telling
- 17:54Speaker 4: you the truth.
- 17:55Speaker 2: It's a it's amazing to.
- 17:57Speaker 4: Me as a as a player, as a former player
- 18:01Speaker 4: who's been around football when you see that kid.
- 18:06Speaker 2: Two years ago, three years ago, you're.
- 18:09Speaker 4: Saying, I don't I don't think second like, I don't
- 18:14Speaker 4: think that he's going to be that kid, you know,
- 18:17Speaker 4: like he's you know, it's gonna be tough of mom
- 18:20Speaker 4: because you know he's just not he's just not.
- 18:24Speaker 2: He just doesn't have it.
- 18:25Speaker 4: And then all of a sudden, you wake up in
- 18:28Speaker 4: this season and he's as physical as anybody on your team.
- 18:34Speaker 7: Well the previous season. I think late in the last season,
- 18:37Speaker 7: I had told our head coach, I've see team Doug.
- 18:40Speaker 7: I said, you know, this kid's could have prevailed. He's
- 18:43Speaker 7: going to be a threat. I said, don't you know,
- 18:46Speaker 7: make sure you remember, like look into him. He's going
- 18:48Speaker 7: to be something, you know, and he had he's showing it.
- 18:51Speaker 7: You know that he is could be a running the
- 18:53Speaker 7: ball and also in the defense aspect.
- 18:56Speaker 5: So yeah, and I think that's why you can't give
- 18:58Speaker 5: up on these kids, you know what I mean?
- 19:00Speaker 6: Yeah, they might be this way.
- 19:02Speaker 5: And we have one and I won't mention his name,
- 19:04Speaker 5: but we call him speed Bump because we're always tripping
- 19:07Speaker 5: over him, you know what I mean. But you tell
- 19:10Speaker 5: me in two years that the kid won't snap it
- 19:12Speaker 5: together and become one of the better ones. I mean,
- 19:14Speaker 5: you just can't work.
- 19:15Speaker 7: We're giving our full resources into these kids, you know,
- 19:18Speaker 7: and they're I mean, if they don't get it this season,
- 19:21Speaker 7: next season, next season, but they're still when every time
- 19:25Speaker 7: the season is done with I'll you know, I pick
- 19:29Speaker 7: up pretty much most of the coaches I've worked with
- 19:31Speaker 7: over the last four years that we're walking away that
- 19:34Speaker 7: these kids have severely learned and gained something somehow out
- 19:38Speaker 7: of that season of being with our program, being coached
- 19:41Speaker 7: by us, and being part of a team and a family.
- 19:44Speaker 7: That's one thing I've looked at too, like hey, you know,
- 19:47Speaker 7: I mean if they made two sacks, if they made
- 19:50Speaker 7: two touchdowns, or if they you know, the goals they
- 19:53Speaker 7: set themselves, they'll set goals for them. Will come up
- 19:55Speaker 7: and tell them like, hey, do you think next practice,
- 19:57Speaker 7: man is try to go this practice and do this.
- 20:00Speaker 4: And we have a kid, we have a kid that
- 20:01Speaker 4: you know is really struggling to pay attention.
- 20:05Speaker 2: You know, you guys know who who that who that
- 20:08Speaker 2: kid is pay attention.
- 20:09Speaker 7: That's that's a good sixty.
- 20:12Speaker 2: But we but we got we got one. We got
- 20:16Speaker 2: one one that stands out and I my, my hat's off.
- 20:20Speaker 4: To mom because she's not she's not giving up on him,
- 20:28Speaker 4: and and and and I'm and I'm let me.
- 20:30Speaker 2: Just justify this.
- 20:32Speaker 4: This conversation right here is about the good of you football.
- 20:38Speaker 4: It's it's the things that, yeah, you don't see on Sunday.
- 20:43Speaker 4: It's the things that you don't necessarily see if you're
- 20:45Speaker 4: not at practice. And sometimes even if you come to
- 20:49Speaker 4: practice and you see it, you think.
- 20:50Speaker 2: It's something else.
- 20:52Speaker 4: This is the This is the good in the in
- 20:55Speaker 4: the in the coaches who coach, and the parents who
- 20:58Speaker 4: are are dedicated to getting their kid there every day.
- 21:02Speaker 4: And and even to the point of I'm not letting
- 21:05Speaker 4: him quit. Mom gets him out there. He was ducking
- 21:11Speaker 4: a drill and Mom was the one who caught it.
- 21:15Speaker 4: And she comes out on the field and gets on
- 21:18Speaker 4: him and tells him, no, you're going to be part
- 21:21Speaker 4: of this tackling drill. And now he came up and
- 21:25Speaker 4: asked to get into the scrimmage the other day.
- 21:30Speaker 5: That's awesome. And you know what, he even knocked the
- 21:32Speaker 5: kid down. He even got a pancake coming off the line.
- 21:35Speaker 2: And that that that My hat's off to you guys,
- 21:40Speaker 2: and and and and the people.
- 21:41Speaker 4: Who don't know you football are never really paid or
- 21:46Speaker 4: like it or think it's anything.
- 21:48Speaker 2: I'm telling you these coaches.
- 21:51Speaker 4: Not just my coaches here in the studio South Charleston,
- 21:56Speaker 4: but all these guys that are out there and women
- 21:59Speaker 4: who are out.
- 22:00Speaker 2: There on the field with these kids. Some have great talent.
- 22:04Speaker 4: Already, some some you really have to work at. And
- 22:10Speaker 4: and my hat's off to it. And I think it's
- 22:13Speaker 4: worth having this conversation about it, because if not, I
- 22:20Speaker 4: think we you know, we we failed to point this
- 22:25Speaker 4: out to.
- 22:26Speaker 2: To the parents.
- 22:27Speaker 4: And I'm hoping that, you know, we'll let all the
- 22:31Speaker 4: parents know that this was our conversation so that they
- 22:35Speaker 4: can come and hear us saying how proud we are
- 22:40Speaker 4: of these kids and and what what is actually happening,
- 22:44Speaker 4: you know, because I think my hat's off to the
- 22:48Speaker 4: coaches again. I mean, you guys are the you know,
- 22:54Speaker 4: I'm not overly hands on. I don't typically get out
- 22:58Speaker 4: there unless you know there's there's issue.
- 23:00Speaker 2: I try to Now Cavon now now he's.
- 23:04Speaker 4: He's he's becoming the coach with every tea you know,
- 23:07Speaker 4: which hats off here. He loves it, you know, he
- 23:11Speaker 4: gets excited when they do something and and he does
- 23:14Speaker 4: his muscle, his flex when they do their chess, they
- 23:19Speaker 4: love it, and and and and what I'm what, I'm
- 23:23Speaker 4: what I appreciate when I'm watching it. I can appreciate
- 23:28Speaker 4: the enjoyment of the coaches, appreciating the success and the
- 23:34Speaker 4: growth of the of these young kids.
- 23:39Speaker 2: And I'm not I'm not I want us to win.
- 23:42Speaker 2: I don't.
- 23:42Speaker 4: I don't want to. I don't want by any stretch.
- 23:44Speaker 4: I don't want anybody to think that I'm not interested
- 23:46Speaker 4: in winning.
- 23:48Speaker 2: But I'm telling you that the reality of.
- 23:53Speaker 4: What I see in the coaches I can appreciate and
- 23:57Speaker 4: and and have to respect it, you know. And so
- 24:01Speaker 4: my hat's off to you guys, and our parents specifically,
- 24:05Speaker 4: because I know we have these types of parents. Not
- 24:09Speaker 4: saying nobody else does it, but we have some parents
- 24:12Speaker 4: that are really wanting you to be on their kids.
- 24:16Speaker 2: They don't mind you being on their kids. They're telling you.
- 24:20Speaker 6: To get on them.
- 24:22Speaker 2: And that's sometimes is hard to find.
- 24:25Speaker 5: Yeah, because a lot of times it's not that way.
- 24:27Speaker 5: It's the office exactly.
- 24:28Speaker 2: Exactly, all right.
- 24:29Speaker 4: So ladies, gentlemen, we're going to take a quick break

- 25:55Speaker 4: I want to say that the ugly, let's go to
- 25:58Speaker 4: the ugly side of it.
- 26:00Speaker 5: Yeah, well, there's a lot more to talk about on
- 26:02Speaker 5: that Sideum, yeah, yeah.
- 26:03Speaker 2: There there is a there's a lot. I've tried my
- 26:08Speaker 2: best to try to understand the power, the power, where
- 26:21Speaker 2: the power.
- 26:22Speaker 4: Comes from in our leagues when you're in when we're
- 26:27Speaker 4: in charge.
- 26:29Speaker 2: And I'm and I'll and I'll say this out loud.
- 26:33Speaker 4: And and as and and as serious as I could
- 26:37Speaker 4: possibly be youth football. And I don't know what you
- 26:40Speaker 4: guys are gonna think when I say this, but I
- 26:44Speaker 4: will have you express your your thoughts and views on it.
- 26:50Speaker 2: Youth football has to have oversight.
- 26:58Speaker 4: We cannot, we cannot trust the adults in the room
- 27:04Speaker 4: to do the best thing for the league itself. And
- 27:10Speaker 4: when I say the league itself, it's teams. There should
- 27:13Speaker 4: not be there should never be a reason to have
- 27:17Speaker 4: to put out a team out of a league.
- 27:22Speaker 6: No.
- 27:24Speaker 4: What should happen is if the president. If I'm the
- 27:28Speaker 4: president and I act the fool, I say something, do something,
- 27:34Speaker 4: put ban me and put the pressure on the city
- 27:39Speaker 4: of South rulest and to put somebody else in. But
- 27:43Speaker 4: don't because everybody. What do we hear everybody's talking about
- 27:47Speaker 4: is what it's for the kids. We got to do
- 27:49Speaker 4: this for the kids.
- 27:50Speaker 6: Kids.
- 27:51Speaker 4: Well, you can't get the you you hurt the kids
- 27:54Speaker 4: when you get the adults.
- 27:57Speaker 2: Tell me what.
- 27:59Speaker 4: South Charles and has done to be out of any league.
- 28:04Speaker 4: I'm not I'm not talking specifically. We have not broken
- 28:08Speaker 4: any rules, we have not done anything.
- 28:10Speaker 5: We've not had one violation one. I mean, we've had
- 28:14Speaker 5: one coach thrown out of a game three years ago
- 28:17Speaker 5: and that was just cause the cost. And I mean
- 28:20Speaker 5: that's all we've done in the five years that I've
- 28:22Speaker 5: been president at South or presence at South Charleston.
- 28:25Speaker 9: SO and and fret I mean, do you I haven't
- 28:30Speaker 9: seen us present ourselves in a negative manner towards any
- 28:35Speaker 9: other program out there that you know that we should
- 28:39Speaker 9: be just like you know, vote, you know, voted off
- 28:44Speaker 9: the boat.
- 28:44Speaker 7: You know, sorry, you're you're done.
- 28:47Speaker 2: If and if let's let's assume, let's assume that.
- 28:53Speaker 4: If Charleston had done something, don't don't go after the kids.
- 29:00Speaker 6: It's not their fault. It's not the only reason that.
- 29:05Speaker 5: A whole team or a whole city should be banned
- 29:08Speaker 5: from the league is if you deemed it unsafe to
- 29:11Speaker 5: go to that place and play a game of football. Actually,
- 29:15Speaker 5: and there's not a city in this state that you
- 29:18Speaker 5: can deem unsafe to go play a game of college
- 29:20Speaker 5: football or college foot I'm sorry, youth football.
- 29:24Speaker 6: So I mean it's.
- 29:25Speaker 4: And and with and and you've got Dunbar playing out
- 29:28Speaker 4: in the out into the Huntington League.
- 29:30Speaker 5: Yeah, they're driving forty five minutes to an hour to play. Yeah,
- 29:32Speaker 5: we're driving forty five minutes to an hour to play
- 29:35Speaker 5: when we got three teams in our county, in our area.
- 29:39Speaker 2: Ten minutes away, ten minutes So what it.
- 29:42Speaker 6: Makes no sense.
- 29:43Speaker 4: And it's and it and it amazes me that the
- 29:49Speaker 4: political round doesn't want to.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Touch it, So I'll touch it. Somebody.
- 29:55Speaker 4: Somebody has Somebody has to Somebody has to touch this.
- 29:59Speaker 2: Somebody has to because.
- 30:00Speaker 4: If this dies out, if if if I stopped talking
- 30:03Speaker 4: about it, then it's going to be okay.
- 30:08Speaker 2: And and and.
- 30:08Speaker 4: Let me explain how this process works how they can
- 30:13Speaker 4: put a team out or how they put teams out.
- 30:17Speaker 4: So first thing that you have to do is you
- 30:20Speaker 4: have to call a meeting with everybody with the exception
- 30:24Speaker 4: of those teams.
- 30:26Speaker 5: Okay, which which is which just makes no sense? You
- 30:30Speaker 5: should have a right to defend yourself, right, you know.
- 30:34Speaker 2: So you then they vote in.
- 30:37Speaker 4: So they vote in the president and the whole board,
- 30:39Speaker 4: and the board is made up of coaches, which are
- 30:43Speaker 4: presidents or just presidents of the teams that are in
- 30:49Speaker 4: the league.
- 30:50Speaker 2: So we were not.
- 30:54Speaker 4: South Hills, Saint Albans, Dunbar, and US and Charleston were
- 31:00Speaker 4: not invited to a meeting. At one point, there had
- 31:04Speaker 4: to have been a meeting to create a new league
- 31:08Speaker 4: with all these different teams. Now, whether or not these
- 31:10Speaker 4: teams all agreed or not, it ultimately at the end
- 31:13Speaker 4: of the day they said, okay, these teams are not
- 31:15Speaker 4: going to be in. Then they decided that they would
- 31:19Speaker 4: allow us twenty minutes to for the reason to make
- 31:25Speaker 4: a case why we should be in. After that took place,
- 31:29Speaker 4: they took South charlest I mean they took Saint Albans
- 31:31Speaker 4: and South Hills. Okay, we're left out. Us dumbar and Charleston.
- 31:42Speaker 4: I don't care what the reason is. I don't care
- 31:45Speaker 4: what the reasoning is, what it was. What bothers me
- 31:50Speaker 4: is the kids that you are leaving out. You don't
- 31:55Speaker 4: have to like me. I don't have to like you.
- 31:59Speaker 4: That's great when you're coaching, and if you're coaching, if
- 32:01Speaker 4: you're not doing anything bad. I just can't just say, well,
- 32:05Speaker 4: you know what, I don't like him. I'm gonna get
- 32:06Speaker 4: rid of him. That makes no sense to me.
- 32:09Speaker 2: And ladies and.
- 32:09Speaker 4: Gentlemen, I'm harping on this, and I'll get everybody else's
- 32:15Speaker 4: opinion here, but understand that.
- 32:20Speaker 2: When they do these things, they are hurting kids.
- 32:25Speaker 4: We have kids not playing because the parents are sick
- 32:28Speaker 4: and tired of.
- 32:29Speaker 2: Going through this. They don't want to travel.
- 32:33Speaker 4: When we have all these teams in the valley, it
- 32:38Speaker 4: makes no sense, you know.
- 32:39Speaker 2: And and and we appreciate the.
- 32:41Speaker 6: League that we're in absolutely.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Without any question, but the but why are we there?
- 32:49Speaker 4: Why are we The name of the league league is
- 32:52Speaker 4: Ohio River Valley.
- 32:54Speaker 5: And that ain't us work all val yah working all Baluce.
- 32:58Speaker 4: Yeah, So I mean that's that's kind of how I
- 33:02Speaker 4: see it. How do you guys feel how do you
- 33:04Speaker 4: guys address this in your own mind?
- 33:08Speaker 5: Well, you stated that you don't care what the reasoning is,
- 33:12Speaker 5: but I'm going to fight you back on it.
- 33:14Speaker 6: I do care.
- 33:14Speaker 5: I think that it is a I mean, you should
- 33:18Speaker 5: have to tell us the reason that we can't get
- 33:20Speaker 5: in there. You can't just go and say, well, we're
- 33:22Speaker 5: not accepting you and we don't have to tell you why.
- 33:26Speaker 5: I think that's a cowards way of doing things. And
- 33:29Speaker 5: I mean, you know how I am. I'm just going
- 33:31Speaker 5: to tell you the way I feel, and I just
- 33:33Speaker 5: feel like they're taking.
- 33:34Speaker 6: The cowards way out of it.
- 33:36Speaker 5: There's got to be an underlying reason why you did it,
- 33:39Speaker 5: and you should have to come out with that reason
- 33:41Speaker 5: why you did it and who's involved. I mean, it's
- 33:44Speaker 5: it makes no sense to me how you can form
- 33:46Speaker 5: a league. And I mean, I'm even going to say
- 33:49Speaker 5: that South Charleston's the good kid that sits in the
- 33:52Speaker 5: corner and doesn't even bother no one, because we haven't
- 33:54Speaker 5: in the five years that I've been here. So why
- 33:58Speaker 5: are you keeping them out? You know what I mean?
- 34:00Speaker 5: And I feel like they should have to explain that.
- 34:03Speaker 5: But man, I think the community should get behind us
- 34:05Speaker 5: and force them to kind of say that.
- 34:08Speaker 2: Yeah. I do agree.
- 34:09Speaker 4: I do agree with that, and I would like to
- 34:10Speaker 4: think that, you know, all the teams that are in
- 34:15Speaker 4: should ask the question or be able to say what
- 34:17Speaker 4: we did.
- 34:18Speaker 6: Yeah, because I mean they had to tell.
- 34:22Speaker 2: They had to tell these other people something I would
- 34:25Speaker 2: I would hope.
- 34:26Speaker 5: Yeah, I'm sure one guy didn't make the decision. Yeah,
- 34:28Speaker 5: somebody had to a great because there had to be
- 34:30Speaker 5: in a vote.
- 34:31Speaker 2: Fred.
- 34:32Speaker 7: Yeah, I mean I agree with Kender. I mean you
- 34:35Speaker 7: can't sit here and pick three teams and just automatically
- 34:40Speaker 7: say no and take two other teams and not come
- 34:45Speaker 7: out and say why. And you know, we're coaches, we're
- 34:51Speaker 7: sports programs. What do we I mean, we're supposed to
- 34:54Speaker 7: be role models. I mean it can balance out, like
- 34:57Speaker 7: look at yourselves, like instead of just saying no, like
- 35:00Speaker 7: you don't tell it tel players, No, you can't play
- 35:02Speaker 7: for us. You know, you know we don't like you.
- 35:04Speaker 7: You know, no, we're going to like to see you know,
- 35:08Speaker 7: we will either stand up and help with you, work
- 35:10Speaker 7: with you, or anything to that. But just coming straight
- 35:12Speaker 7: out and saying three teams no, sorry, you know, when
- 35:15Speaker 7: I had already allowed two other teams, you know, and
- 35:20Speaker 7: I felt there was some you know, I wish I
- 35:23Speaker 7: had a good word to say, not like closed door
- 35:26Speaker 7: communication between the two teams and then the other three teams,
- 35:31Speaker 7: because I just felt like, you know, I'll come on in,
- 35:34Speaker 7: you know, But us, I felt we were more restricted
- 35:36Speaker 7: than we were told.
- 35:37Speaker 2: No, you know, yeah, we didn't even like it was
- 35:40Speaker 2: just a straight no.
- 35:41Speaker 4: Yeah, like it was like you know, no, you can't
- 35:45Speaker 4: because you know, we had we had asked after the meeting,
- 35:49Speaker 4: we had asked, you know, and after they had let
- 35:51Speaker 4: Saint Aubans and South Hills in, we asked whether or not,
- 35:56Speaker 4: you know, would you reconsider try to get us in?
- 36:01Speaker 4: And and then there was no there was there was
- 36:03Speaker 4: literally no no response.
- 36:05Speaker 2: And and again.
- 36:07Speaker 4: I don't and I'm not trying to I'm not trying
- 36:10Speaker 4: to put anything on South Hills at all. But they
- 36:17Speaker 4: did have you know, they did bring in which was okay,
- 36:21Speaker 4: which was which which the board approved them to allow
- 36:26Speaker 4: these kids to come and play for them that were
- 36:29Speaker 4: super talented kids, super super talented.
- 36:33Speaker 2: I voted no on it.
- 36:36Speaker 4: But I got you know, but the boat passed and
- 36:38Speaker 4: they got so they were able to play. So quote
- 36:42Speaker 4: legally they were able to play. But if we would
- 36:47Speaker 4: have done.
- 36:47Speaker 6: That, it would.
- 36:51Speaker 4: I don't think I personally do not think that we
- 36:54Speaker 4: would have been allowed to do that. I don't think
- 36:56Speaker 4: Dunbar would have been allowed to do that. I don't
- 36:59Speaker 4: think Trump would have been able to have that opportunity.
- 37:03Speaker 5: And I mean these same kids went to Night Through
- 37:06Speaker 5: the year the year before.
- 37:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 37:08Speaker 5: So I mean, yeah, that right there tells you the
- 37:11Speaker 5: path that used football is going down well.
- 37:13Speaker 4: And then they the attempt was to go to Charleston
- 37:18Speaker 4: after after the nightro and so or from South Hills
- 37:23Speaker 4: they were going to go to they were gonna go
- 37:28Speaker 4: to Dumbar too or to Charleston to help Charleston, which
- 37:32Speaker 4: they would.
- 37:33Speaker 6: Yeah, and and and I mean they haven't been beaten.
- 37:36Speaker 4: And I'm telling you, these kids are going to be great.
- 37:42Speaker 4: And they do play and they play travel football and
- 37:45Speaker 4: and so so they so they know they know the game.
- 37:49Speaker 4: And my hat's off to to the dad and and
- 37:53Speaker 4: and to the kids. But again, it can't ever come
- 37:58Speaker 4: down to a single group or a group or a
- 38:04Speaker 4: tea or a player or a dad or coach wanting
- 38:09Speaker 4: what they want.
- 38:11Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean, you just can't there's no common sense
- 38:15Speaker 5: behind So let's take South Charleston and Dunbar, for instance.
- 38:19Speaker 6: There's a bridge that literally.
- 38:21Speaker 5: Connects the two cities, and we're playing two and a
- 38:25Speaker 5: half hours away from one another. So if we're all
- 38:27Speaker 5: the way up in Warren, Ohio, and they're all the
- 38:29Speaker 5: way and we don't even play it, yeah, I mean,
- 38:32Speaker 5: we don't even play it, you know what I'm saying.
- 38:33Speaker 5: So they're an hour that way, we're an hour and
- 38:35Speaker 5: thirty minutes of the opposite direction. So we got a
- 38:38Speaker 5: bridge that connects the two teams that's playing two and
- 38:40Speaker 5: a half hours.
- 38:41Speaker 2: Well, and these kids go to the school, same school bridge.
- 38:46Speaker 5: Yeah, so I mean you can't there's no rational reasoning
- 38:50Speaker 5: behind that whatsoever.
- 38:51Speaker 4: And I just and and I'm you know, and I've
- 38:54Speaker 4: talked to some different people. I've been on the phone
- 38:56Speaker 4: with a couple of different people, and just just to
- 38:59Speaker 4: be aware, I'm still in dialogue. Okay, I'm not. I'm
- 39:03Speaker 4: not done with it.
- 39:05Speaker 2: But I've talked to a number of people who just,
- 39:10Speaker 2: you know, they say, oh.
- 39:11Speaker 4: Man, that's wrong, you know, And let's be clear, let's
- 39:15Speaker 4: give them a benefit of the doubt. So in the
- 39:17Speaker 4: by laws, what they did, was they put what you
- 39:21Speaker 4: put is something that is specific to two teams.
- 39:26Speaker 2: We're grant funded the City of South Charleston. We don't.
- 39:29Speaker 2: We don't charge our kids all the time. We don't.
- 39:32Speaker 2: You know, we have we're city funded.
- 39:34Speaker 4: We have a budget, you know, And I know that's
- 39:39Speaker 4: that's that's that's unfortunate for a lot of teams who
- 39:42Speaker 4: don't have it. And it's a blessing to us, thank
- 39:46Speaker 4: thank goodness for for our mayor.
- 39:49Speaker 6: Okay, and so.
- 39:54Speaker 4: Having having had that that opportunity right to be city
- 40:01Speaker 4: funded now works against us because now you put in
- 40:07Speaker 4: the bylaw that you cannot be city funded.
- 40:10Speaker 5: I mean, come on, we're the only city funded team
- 40:13Speaker 5: around here.
- 40:13Speaker 4: Charleston goes out and anybody who's tried to write a
- 40:18Speaker 4: grant will tell.
- 40:18Speaker 2: You that ain't easy. That ain't easy. Charleston goes out,
- 40:25Speaker 2: gets a grant.
- 40:27Speaker 4: They're super excited because now they can buy safer helmets,
- 40:31Speaker 4: safe for shoulder pads, all of that, nice uniforms.
- 40:34Speaker 2: And in the bylaws you can't be grant funded. So
- 40:42Speaker 2: is that not targeted?
- 40:44Speaker 4: And how then do you how then do like communities
- 40:48Speaker 4: that that have low income parents, how do they afford
- 40:55Speaker 4: helmets and shoulder pads, cleats and pants and jerseys and
- 40:59Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff.
- 41:00Speaker 2: They can't.
- 41:01Speaker 5: It's hard to do it at any householder. Yes, you
- 41:04Speaker 5: know what I mean. So why why would you punish
- 41:07Speaker 5: a child because he doesn't have to fork out that money?
- 41:10Speaker 6: It makes no sense to me, you know, I mean, it's.
- 41:12Speaker 5: Not like we're recruiting kids from out of state because
- 41:15Speaker 5: we're a city funded team.
- 41:17Speaker 6: You know what I mean.
- 41:17Speaker 5: But if you and you know, as a coach, I
- 41:21Speaker 5: love I mean, Drawston's okay with me, But as a coach,
- 41:24Speaker 5: there are rivals, you know what I'm saying.
- 41:26Speaker 6: So you know, we want to plan.
- 41:27Speaker 5: But if you look at that team, they have two
- 41:30Speaker 5: or three different color helmets, you know what I'm saying,
- 41:33Speaker 5: because they don't have the finances to buy all the
- 41:36Speaker 5: same helmets. Now, why does it hurt your feelings that
- 41:40Speaker 5: they got a grant so they can have the same
- 41:42Speaker 5: color helmets on every kid? Now, don't that keeps you?
- 41:47Speaker 4: I'm like you, I don't. I don't want this to
- 41:49Speaker 4: be like a dig on Charleston. But they they've called,
- 41:54Speaker 4: they called, we provided shoulder pats, we've provided helmet. Sure,
- 41:59Speaker 4: why should because we should if we haven't, why shouldn't.
- 42:04Speaker 7: It comes down safety comes first, and I mean if
- 42:07Speaker 7: we reach out and help other teams and help other programs,
- 42:10Speaker 7: or we reach out to help for support, to make
- 42:13Speaker 7: sure that we are providing safety for the kids first,
- 42:18Speaker 7: there shouldn't be punished, shouldn't be you know.
- 42:20Speaker 6: Yeah, that's a pray report, you know what I mean.
- 42:24Speaker 4: Yeah, because I'm thinking, I'm thinking to we're never gonna
- 42:29Speaker 4: wear those gray pants that we used to wear. No,
- 42:32Speaker 4: I'm thinking about just getting letting trusting you know, if
- 42:36Speaker 4: they want them, because we're not using it. And then
- 42:39Speaker 4: we've got a ton of helmets that you know, we're
- 42:41Speaker 4: not we're never gonna go back to.
- 42:44Speaker 2: They can possibly even getting painted if they want it, you.
- 42:48Speaker 6: Know, still gonna be cheaper, and it's gonna be cheaper.
- 42:50Speaker 2: Than buying them.
- 42:51Speaker 4: So we're set up in a we're set up in
- 42:56Speaker 4: a system to where we're trying to be helpful to
- 42:59Speaker 4: program even if we even if we can't beat them.
- 43:03Speaker 6: Yeah I will one day.
- 43:05Speaker 2: Yeah, Yeah, we hopefully we can get there. We can
- 43:08Speaker 2: get there.
- 43:08Speaker 4: We'll get there, but but we want to again when
- 43:13Speaker 4: we say we're about all the kids, Yeah, we show that. Yeah, absolutely,
- 43:19Speaker 4: and it doesn't. It's not just draws it. I mean,
- 43:21Speaker 4: if dun Bar or somebody asked we would try to
- 43:26Speaker 4: get we would do anything we could to try to
- 43:28Speaker 4: help them.
- 43:30Speaker 2: You know, I think I had something.
- 43:32Speaker 7: Well, I was gonna say, also it goes into like
- 43:34Speaker 7: you don't have enough kids, we might be able to
- 43:36Speaker 7: reach out and you know, send you some kids or
- 43:40Speaker 7: stuff like that. But you mentioned I was like, I'll
- 43:42Speaker 7: never forget. You know, we had the issue with my
- 43:44Speaker 7: son with the helmet and all that stuff, and I
- 43:48Speaker 7: remember you you are first season. You really made sure
- 43:51Speaker 7: that safety came first. And some of these teams we
- 43:54Speaker 7: played that year, you know, sadly, as a parent, I
- 43:58Speaker 7: looked out there and saw some of these kids, I'm
- 44:00Speaker 7: not gonna name which teams. They were out there on
- 44:02Speaker 7: the field with helmets that they look like little bobbleheads
- 44:04Speaker 7: they weren't even fitting correctly. And being able to have
- 44:08Speaker 7: that resource to get them stuff the safety equipment properly
- 44:12Speaker 7: fitted and all that, you know, and if you know,
- 44:16Speaker 7: reaching out and help one another and stuff like that,
- 44:18Speaker 7: that's really is a positive thing and shouldn't be frowned upon,
- 44:22Speaker 7: you know. Voted against you know.
- 44:24Speaker 4: And and you guys, you guys know, I'll sit. I'll
- 44:27Speaker 4: sit in the equipment room no matter how hot it
- 44:30Speaker 4: is or the concession, and I'll fit helmets and shoulder
- 44:33Speaker 4: pads as long as it takes. And I'm not I'm
- 44:36Speaker 4: not trying to rush you through. I'm trying to make
- 44:39Speaker 4: sure that that everything is fitting. And it's what's what's
- 44:42Speaker 4: what's crazy about that though I've seen a couple of helmets.
- 44:46Speaker 2: I'm like, gosh, I must have missed that one.
- 44:47Speaker 4: You know, maybe you but but yeah, I think and
- 44:54Speaker 4: and and Fred, that's a that's a valid point. I
- 44:56Speaker 4: think at the end of the day, youth football has
- 45:02Speaker 4: to be about it. It has to be about safety,
- 45:05Speaker 4: and it has to be But before we can get
- 45:08Speaker 4: to safety, we have to get participation. And the way
- 45:12Speaker 4: you get participation is you make it as easy as
- 45:15Speaker 4: possible and you don't have the drama because parents don't
- 45:20Speaker 4: want They already know they got to bring their kids
- 45:22Speaker 4: to practice almost every day, they got to take them
- 45:24Speaker 4: to games every day or on the weekend on a Sunday.
- 45:28Speaker 4: Don't add any more drama to the mix. Because as
- 45:33Speaker 4: soon as you start talking about okay, we're not in
- 45:35Speaker 4: the league.
- 45:36Speaker 2: And how many how many times did you hear that
- 45:37Speaker 2: we were going to have to go three or four hours.
- 45:44Speaker 7: Flew for two months? Yeah, playing four and a half
- 45:47Speaker 7: hours every practice going on.
- 45:50Speaker 4: Yeah, somebody even said, yeah, we were going to practice practice.
- 45:55Speaker 7: I just to it's still affecting, no, as I just
- 45:58Speaker 7: recently talked to a parent of a previous player that
- 46:01Speaker 7: we have not seen and within you know, thirty seconds
- 46:06Speaker 7: that conversation, that's the first thing it was, is I
- 46:09Speaker 7: just I can't I can't travel.
- 46:11Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, I can't travel.
- 46:13Speaker 7: Here's a very talented kid, you know, has a good
- 46:18Speaker 7: future in youth football that you know that they really need,
- 46:22Speaker 7: you know, because some of these you know, these kids
- 46:24Speaker 7: out there today, they don't have the opportunity, you know,
- 46:28Speaker 7: and you take somebody that grows, you know, that has
- 46:31Speaker 7: a family household, that's not right in the valley, that
- 46:34Speaker 7: could be just outside the valley. The kids don't have
- 46:37Speaker 7: much of a social life, I hope that's the best
- 46:39Speaker 7: word I can say, much of a social life. And
- 46:41Speaker 7: here's a chance that you know, we're providing an easy
- 46:45Speaker 7: access and then we provide it, but then we get
- 46:48Speaker 7: have we have to tell them, sorry, you got to
- 46:50Speaker 7: drive an hour and a half away, you know, stuff
- 46:52Speaker 7: like that, and that's tough. You know, when things here locally,
- 46:56Speaker 7: it'd be more easier for these families to get these
- 46:58Speaker 7: kids to these games and be able to feel numbers
- 47:01Speaker 7: for because I think we weren't just hurting on that either.
- 47:04Speaker 7: I heard rumors one of the other teams is hurting,
- 47:07Speaker 7: you know, because the parents just don't want to drive
- 47:09Speaker 7: an hour and a half away or not.
- 47:12Speaker 5: You know, there's several teams that are suffering, and I
- 47:14Speaker 5: think our our first week of practice showed the consequences
- 47:17Speaker 5: from it, you know what I mean.
- 47:18Speaker 2: And I think I think you're right.
- 47:21Speaker 4: And I think that everybody, everybody's here in the valley.
- 47:27Speaker 4: I think everybody's down a little bit regardless of where
- 47:31Speaker 4: they're going to play. I think Charleston said they may
- 47:33Speaker 4: have had up ticking up tick in numbers, which I
- 47:38Speaker 4: would I hopefully they do, you know, I hope that
- 47:42Speaker 4: Dunbar would have an uptick. I know for us, our
- 47:47Speaker 4: parents in everything that we do in the city of
- 47:49Speaker 4: South Charlestan is usually in the City of South Charlestan,
- 47:53Speaker 4: you know what I'm saying, Like you know, we got
- 47:54Speaker 4: our own basketball league, we got a baseball league, and
- 47:56Speaker 4: we got our fields and all that and and I'm
- 47:58Speaker 4: not bragging. I'm making the case that that's a good
- 48:01Speaker 4: thing for our kids. So now when you start turning
- 48:05Speaker 4: too just one sport football and you've got to go,
- 48:09Speaker 4: you know, an hour and a half to a game,
- 48:12Speaker 4: hour and a half down, hour and a half back
- 48:15Speaker 4: and game time.
- 48:17Speaker 6: And multiple kids on.
- 48:20Speaker 7: I was up there from what nine thirty to five thirty.
- 48:27Speaker 6: Iron a half back.
- 48:28Speaker 7: You figure that that's a game we got. We got
- 48:31Speaker 7: families out there that have kids on all three teams,
- 48:34Speaker 7: you know, potentially all three, so they would have to
- 48:36Speaker 7: be there the same amount of time.
- 48:38Speaker 4: I'm getting asked almost every day like, you know, what
- 48:41Speaker 4: are we going to do with the A team?
- 48:42Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, and and.
- 48:45Speaker 4: One of the you know, one of the comments was,
- 48:48Speaker 4: you know, don't string us along.
- 48:50Speaker 2: I said, I'm not. I'm not.
- 48:51Speaker 4: I'm not stringing you along. I don't know when I
- 48:54Speaker 4: can When do you pull the plug on the kids
- 48:57Speaker 4: that are out there that are playing. I know that
- 48:59Speaker 4: the pairents, you know, you got maybe just a kid
- 49:02Speaker 4: on the A team, then you may not want to
- 49:05Speaker 4: have them practicing or whatever. And and we've got we've
- 49:09Speaker 4: got a young one specific young lady that's on our
- 49:13Speaker 4: a team I think could be so good and and
- 49:20Speaker 4: I personally feel like, gosh, I wish we could get
- 49:23Speaker 4: a team so she could play.
- 49:26Speaker 6: Yeah, we're four kids, shah.
- 49:28Speaker 5: Yeah, and the potential of them becoming so much better
- 49:32Speaker 5: is outstanding, is I mean, I get it, you know
- 49:35Speaker 5: what I mean, We're coming up the week one and
- 49:37Speaker 5: we still don't have enough. So, I mean I understand
- 49:40Speaker 5: the parents is frustrations.
- 49:42Speaker 7: They've given us what six or five weeks now being
- 49:45Speaker 7: there on practice.
- 49:46Speaker 6: Yeah, I mean that is loyalty out there.
- 49:50Speaker 7: Button still still hasn't pulled the you know frame and
- 49:54Speaker 7: brought you the helmet, brought you the paths and say
- 49:56Speaker 7: we're done. Still still staying strong with us. It was
- 50:00Speaker 7: an awful lot. And like Kender said, four kids, shah,
- 50:04Speaker 7: for these kids that put it on the work.
- 50:06Speaker 4: And if you if you're in the city of South Charleston,
- 50:08Speaker 4: if you're and you're listening to the show, if you know,
- 50:12Speaker 4: if you know some kids that hadn't actually signed up
- 50:16Speaker 4: but might be willing to play football, hey, have them
- 50:20Speaker 4: come to the wreck have them come to the Wreck
- 50:22Speaker 4: at any time.
- 50:23Speaker 2: They could sign up there. Practice will be six to
- 50:26Speaker 2: eight up at the Rock.
- 50:28Speaker 4: They can come to the Rock and sign up there,
- 50:31Speaker 4: and we can take care of the application and get
- 50:33Speaker 4: it back down to the rec center, get you fitted
- 50:36Speaker 4: for helmets and shoulder pads and.
- 50:38Speaker 2: And make a team. Hey, we could, if we could.
- 50:42Speaker 2: If we can get.
- 50:42Speaker 5: Twelve, yeah, that's all you need. If we can get.
- 50:45Speaker 2: Twelve thirteen, maybe I would be happy. Yeah.
- 50:49Speaker 5: And that's only four kids, yeah, four kids, yes, And
- 50:52Speaker 5: so fifth and sixth graders.
- 50:54Speaker 4: If you enjoy the show and you're listening, please please,
- 51:00Speaker 4: And you live in South Charleston, and I don't even
- 51:03Speaker 4: make the case if you live anywhere that you haven't
- 51:06Speaker 4: signed up, and you're in our in our general area,
- 51:11Speaker 4: we'll take a shot at it. You know what I'm saying.
- 51:13Speaker 4: We'll we'll, we'll, we'll, we'll press the league. We'll press
- 51:16Speaker 4: the league. Like look, this will give us an eighteen ye.
- 51:20Speaker 4: I don't care how good you are, how we want
- 51:23Speaker 4: you to out We want you to be.
- 51:24Speaker 2: Out there to play.
- 51:25Speaker 6: Yeah, so.
- 51:29Speaker 4: Fred you can you got anything else you got to say,
- 51:31Speaker 4: and we'll get ready to close it up here you
- 51:34Speaker 4: got anything anything you'd like to say to the parents,
- 51:37Speaker 4: get off your chest or whatever.
- 51:39Speaker 7: First off, thank you Carl for having Kinder and I,
- 51:41Speaker 7: you know, I'll say thank you for Kinder.
- 51:43Speaker 2: That's right. Yeah, I don't want to hear him.
- 51:46Speaker 7: Yeah, you know Purple, you know four seasons. Of course,
- 51:51Speaker 7: this season, I'm allowed to say nothing about the Vikings,
- 51:54Speaker 7: but uh maybe next season I might switched up.
- 51:57Speaker 2: So you just put yourself on a long lift with
- 52:00Speaker 2: you come back.
- 52:03Speaker 7: But uh, one, I like to thank our community for
- 52:06Speaker 7: reaching out and supporting us. You know, that's one of
- 52:08Speaker 7: the biggest things, and all communities out there, I want
- 52:11Speaker 7: to say that too. You know, if you're listening, if
- 52:13Speaker 7: you don't have a kid that's in sports out there,
- 52:16Speaker 7: you can still reach out and support them by you know,
- 52:19Speaker 7: maybe reaching out and asking when our schedules are, you know,
- 52:22Speaker 7: and you know, go into a game or two. You know,
- 52:24Speaker 7: it's just you know, help support these programs, you know,
- 52:28Speaker 7: because you know, you know these programs. You know, we
- 52:32Speaker 7: need football to continue, we need support to continue. So one,
- 52:35Speaker 7: I like to say thank you to all of you know,
- 52:37Speaker 7: people out there supporting our city and everything. Parents out there,
- 52:42Speaker 7: you know, thank you you know, for allowing us to
- 52:45Speaker 7: give your kids an opportunity to go out there and
- 52:46Speaker 7: play football. You know, thank you for allowing us to
- 52:50Speaker 7: coach with kids and all that stuff. And you know,
- 52:53Speaker 7: we're going to do all we can for them and
- 52:55Speaker 7: be there for them. And you know, and we look,
- 52:58Speaker 7: you know, we're looking, and we got a game coming
- 53:00Speaker 7: up Sunday. Let's go out there and you know this,
- 53:02Speaker 7: play some football Sunday. So game time, Yeah, game time Sunday.
- 53:09Speaker 6: You got.
- 53:10Speaker 5: Well, I just would like to say, uh, you know,
- 53:13Speaker 5: we need to go back to taking the pride that comes.
- 53:16Speaker 6: With your communities.
- 53:19Speaker 5: Uh you know, I mean, take, for instance, you know,
- 53:22Speaker 5: South Charleston is where we started. We lived in South
- 53:25Speaker 5: Charleston five years ago and we came and played for
- 53:28Speaker 5: South Charleston Football and we eventually bought our house, thank
- 53:34Speaker 5: god that we were able to do, and we moved
- 53:36Speaker 5: across lanes and we still have the pride of South
- 53:40Speaker 5: Charleston football.
- 53:41Speaker 6: It's where we started, it's where we're born, you know,
- 53:44Speaker 6: where we.
- 53:44Speaker 7: Played, not just one kid, multiple kids.
- 53:47Speaker 5: And the thing of it is that people don't take
- 53:49Speaker 5: pride in where they live anymore. It's les let's run
- 53:53Speaker 5: to the easiest situation that we got, the best chance
- 53:55Speaker 5: for us to win a football game. Let's run there,
- 53:58Speaker 5: take our kid there. I think the youth sports needs
- 54:01Speaker 5: to get away from that, and it starts with the parents.
- 54:03Speaker 5: So I just asked that the parents, you know, look
- 54:06Speaker 5: into that and give some pride to your community, you know.
- 54:09Speaker 6: So that's all I got, and I appreciate you having
- 54:11Speaker 6: me on.
- 54:11Speaker 2: Here go Packers. That'll kill you from the next time.
- 54:17Speaker 7: I'm staying out of this title. I'm not in this
- 54:21Speaker 7: out there.
- 54:21Speaker 2: I'll close it. I'll close out by saying, like.
- 54:27Speaker 4: I just wish we could find a way that youth
- 54:29Speaker 4: football could be about the youth having fun, amen, and
- 54:34Speaker 4: not necessarily who's winning. Somebody's gonna win, There's no question
- 54:37Speaker 4: about that. Somebody's gonna win. But I think that where
- 54:42Speaker 4: we need to be is we need to enjoy the
- 54:45Speaker 4: opportunity for the kids to be out on the field
- 54:50Speaker 4: and just having fun.
- 54:53Speaker 2: Let the coaches coach.
- 54:56Speaker 4: And I think that if we do that, Like, I
- 54:59Speaker 4: just really truly think that if we do that, it
- 55:03Speaker 4: would just get better we as the adults. When you
- 55:07Speaker 4: start to do something that you think is going to
- 55:10Speaker 4: benefit you, your child or your team.
- 55:16Speaker 2: You're dead wrong.
- 55:20Speaker 1: You.
- 55:21Speaker 4: The role we have as the adults is to teach teamwork.
- 55:26Speaker 4: And the only way we can teach teamwork is we
- 55:29Speaker 4: have to be about our entire team, yes, not our
- 55:33Speaker 4: particular kid.
- 55:35Speaker 2: That doesn't work. I've never had I've never had a.
- 55:38Speaker 4: Child anywhere remotely close to being part of the football.
- 55:42Speaker 2: Program at all. But I have seen I have seen
- 55:49Speaker 2: kids give up.
- 55:52Speaker 4: I can see I've seen parents walk away, you know,
- 55:57Speaker 4: take their kids away, and I can't. I can't fite
- 56:00Speaker 4: you in that situation. But I'm just telling you that,
- 56:05Speaker 4: in this situation, creating this positive environment that is called
- 56:10Speaker 4: football and team and work ethic, I think you are
- 56:15Speaker 4: building something with your.
- 56:16Speaker 6: Child and I agree with that one hundred percent.
- 56:19Speaker 2: So that's that's that's that's all I got.
- 56:24Speaker 4: And gentlemen, I do appreciate I do appreciate you all
- 56:27Speaker 4: coming here and taking your time out and having a

- 57:05Speaker 1: your feet. Anything can be a win, yup, even the
- 57:08Speaker 1: feet that say shit's a bath for you? Wise villitary
- 57:11Speaker 1: Sweet couldn't play with big kids. I had to sit
- 57:13Speaker 1: in the street and watch from a distance. But over
- 57:16Speaker 1: time I grew. If I put in the work and
- 57:18Speaker 1: no time, I'm doing everything that I worked and prayed,
- 57:21Speaker 1: I'm mokay. If you ask me how did I do it,
- 57:24Speaker 1: I'm gonna say. You gotta work, cry shine, just mine
