Transcript
- 0:00Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:04culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:07media, the creator economy and the digital space every Monday
- 0:11through Thursday. I'm your host, Lauren Meisner,
- 0:14the founder of the youth digital media brand Centennial World.
- 0:19Welcome back to Mini scroll, everyone.
- 0:22And before I get into the stories for today, I wanted to
- 0:26say something very exciting. Just a little tidbit.
- 0:29It's it's like small, but one of my listeners messaged me
- 0:34yesterday saying, Oh my God, do you listen to The Who weekly
- 0:37podcast? Because they mentioned infinite
- 0:39scroll in their latest episode. So I listened and I heard the
- 0:44little segment and it was so sweet.
- 0:45They talked about how one of their friends loves Infinite
- 0:48Scroll, the podcast, my podcast, I assume.
- 0:52So if you are that friend who loves Infinite Scroll and you've
- 0:55been talking about us with your friends, thank you so much
- 0:59because it was so exciting to hear that mention Who Weekly is
- 1:02obviously a really big podcast in the US And yeah, it was just
- 1:06exciting to hear that little bit of love.
- 1:08All right, so I have like 2 1/2 stories for you guys today.
- 1:14So the first story, obviously we need to talk about how Brianna
- 1:18Chicken Fry and Zach Bryan have split after over a year of
- 1:22dating. So yesterday, obviously I didn't
- 1:25do mini and this all happened yesterday and I was like what a
- 1:28day. What a day to not be doing my
- 1:31daily Internet culture news podcast.
- 1:34So yesterday country singer Zac Bryant announced on his
- 1:37Instagram stories that he had split from Brianna Chicken Fry.
- 1:40And I was just talking to the girls that work for me at the
- 1:43office before I came to record. And we were joking about how
- 1:47like we are probably one of the only podcast like pop culture E
- 1:50podcast that would like explain who Zac Bryant is and not
- 1:54explain who Brianna Chicken Fry is.
- 1:56OK, so Zac wrote this on his Instagram stories.
- 1:59Oh also, I'm in another blazer moment.
- 2:01Sorry I forgot to address it. I'm going to a fashion show
- 2:03after work for like a brand like a L'Oreal event and it's a
- 2:07fashion show and it's cocktail attire and it's freezing in this
- 2:10office. So that's why I'm looking so
- 2:12formal because I feel like every time I'm not in active wear and
- 2:16sweater it looks a little bit out of place for the pod.
- 2:19But anyways, that is why. OK so Zach wrote on his
- 2:23Instagram stories addressing something.
- 2:25Brianna and me have broken up with each other and I respect
- 2:28and love her with every ounce of my heart.
- 2:30She has loved me unconditionally for a very long time and for
- 2:33that I'll always thank her. I've had an incredibly hard year
- 2:36personally and struggled through some pretty severe things.
- 2:39I thought it would be beneficial for both of us to go our
- 2:41different ways. I am not perfect and never will
- 2:44be. Please respect Brianna's privacy
- 2:46and space in this and if you have it in your heart, mine too.
- 2:50With everything I am and to anyone I let down I am sorry.
- 2:54I try my best in everything. I failed people that love me and
- 2:58mostly myself. I will say people have been
- 3:00comparing this statement to the statement he made when he broke
- 3:03up with Deb, who was his, I think like longtime girlfriend,
- 3:08maybe fiance. No, he was married before Deb
- 3:10Sorry, I don't know the Zach Bryan lore very well, but I know
- 3:14that Deb was the woman that he was dating, I believe before
- 3:18Brianna. And everybody has been saying
- 3:20that Brianna's like quote UN quote, like copying her.
- 3:22I don't subscribe to that. But the statement is similar in
- 3:26the sense that in the statement that he made when he broke up
- 3:28with Deb, he said the same thing of like, she's loved me through
- 3:32something. And then he said something about
- 3:33like, you know, please respect Deb's privacy at this time.
- 3:37Like just trying to be it's giving like Jax Taylor, you
- 3:40know, like, it's giving toxic guy that wants to be seen as
- 3:45this like, martyr, as like the good guy.
- 3:48And so says stuff like that. And like loves to take blame
- 3:52because then he can be the wounded guy that just like, you
- 3:56know, is so messed up and knows that he isn't wants to be
- 4:00better, but like just keeps messing up and getting in his
- 4:03own way and like can't figure it out.
- 4:04Like he can be that guy. Like he can be that like wounded
- 4:07little bird. That's what it's giving me.
- 4:08But again, I don't know the Zach Bryan lore that well.
- 4:12And then Brianna like almost immediately posted on her
- 4:14stories and she wrote, hey guys, I'm feeling really blindsided
- 4:17right now. Going to hop off social media
- 4:19for a while and attempt to heal privately.
- 4:22When I'm ready, I'll be back and ready to talk.
- 4:24I love you guys so much. Thank you all for your kind
- 4:27words. Remember, you are so loved and
- 4:29everything's always going to be OK.
- 4:32So people were like, Oh my God, like blindsided in the sense of
- 4:36blindsided by this breakup or blindsided that he posted about
- 4:40the breakup. So she then posted a YouTube
- 4:43video confirming that no, he did not break up with her over an
- 4:47Instagram story. He announced it publicly and she
- 4:50was not made aware of that. She said that she found out
- 4:53because people were messaging her.
- 4:54He did not tell her that he was going to post this and they had
- 4:58only broken up the day before. Zach posting on his Instagram
- 5:02that we broke up and I had no idea that post was going up.
- 5:08He didn't text me, he didn't call me.
- 5:10I just woke up to a bunch of texts being like, are you OK?
- 5:12And I'm like, did my fucking dad die?
- 5:17And yeah. So I'm like completely
- 5:19blindsided by that. You see I was swollen my faces.
- 5:21I've been crying for like 5 days straight.
- 5:24Sorry if this video is going to be a lot of jumping around, but
- 5:27I I'm just, I'm at the point where it's like, how can you
- 5:35give someone everything and like love them so unconditionally,
- 5:42like through stuff that you shouldn't because you just love
- 5:46them when you want them. Like you see the good enough
- 5:51like how can you? This is so embarrassing.
- 5:58I don't give a fuck. How can you like give every oz
- 6:03of yourself to someone and then like be discarded of in a few
- 6:10days? It's really, really
- 6:15heartbreaking. And I don't want to talk about
- 6:19details right now. I don't want to talk about I
- 6:23don't want to talk about it yet. I will, obviously.
- 6:27But right now, like I wanted to heal privately and I didn't even
- 6:33know that he was going to post that and we broke up yesterday.
- 6:37Something that's being missed, I think, in some of the recounts
- 6:39of this situation is that it seems like Zach addressed his
- 6:45breakup one day after he was spotted on Raya.
- 6:50So he was spotted on Raya. These could be fake screenshots,
- 6:53but there were screenshots going around TikTok, Twitter, and
- 6:57Reddit of him on Raya. And then like the next day or
- 7:00like a few hours later, he posted that he and Brianna had
- 7:04broken up. So then Brianna said in her
- 7:06YouTube video that they'd only been broken up the day before
- 7:09when he posted that. So the day he broke up with
- 7:12Brianna, he went on Raya, presumably, allegedly.
- 7:17So Brianna has been offline. She's had some people posting on
- 7:20her stories and just saying, like, you know, Brianna's not
- 7:23online, but like, she's checking in.
- 7:24She is going to be back on the podcast next Wednesday.
- 7:27So she's just taking, like, it seems about a week off to just
- 7:31kind of like deal with this. And I can't imagine what it
- 7:33would be like to have to deal with like a breakup on social
- 7:36media like that, especially when it wasn't something that you
- 7:39wanted. And then your ex who broke up
- 7:41with you after. I would say we all kind of know
- 7:44as like fans or peripheral fans, Like we know that he didn't seem
- 7:48to treat her the best. There were always like lots of
- 7:50rumors about cheating and things like that.
- 7:52And you know, he seemed to be, he did seem to be in like kind
- 7:55of a difficult place the last few months just from his social
- 7:59media activity we'd seen and stuff.
- 8:01So anyways, I think having to deal with this now so publicly
- 8:06when you did not choose the breakup, but you also had no
- 8:09idea that they were going to make it public so soon after
- 8:12that would be very difficult. Now.
- 8:13Dave Portnoy has entered the chat.
- 8:15Dave is obviously Brianna. Oh my God.
- 8:17Was going to say boyfriend, boss, her boss and has been for
- 8:22a long time. Her boss, her friend.
- 8:23They do BFFS together and he tweeted dedicating this to at
- 8:28Brianna Chicken Fry on Twitter and he linked the song The
- 8:33Smallest man, Whoever lived by Taylor Swift.
- 8:36And then a very rogue tidbit that I don't think I will ever
- 8:39get over. Today Us Weekly published an
- 8:43article called Is Brianna's last name actually Chicken Fry?
- 8:46What? I feel like that Trisha Paytas
- 8:49sound like that TikTok sound where she's like, huh?
- 8:52What? Oh, OK.
- 8:54Like that's how my brain felt when I read that headline.
- 8:59I was like, excuse me? What?
- 9:03That's why the work that we do here at Infinite Scroll and Mini
- 9:06Scroll is so important so that we don't have pop culture
- 9:10journalists writing articles. Like, is Brianna's last name
- 9:13actually chicken fry? OK, OK.
- 9:16The next thing that I wanted to very quickly touch on this is
- 9:18like the half, the half of the 2 1/2 stories is that people are
- 9:23kind of up in arms because Colleen Ballinger was asked to
- 9:27and did speak at a high school recently.
- 9:30And I have not really dove into like the specifics of it.
- 9:35So this is going to be quite high level because I just
- 9:37thought it is kind of like a random tidbit story.
- 9:41So some people felt like the high school is being dismissive
- 9:43of like, everything that happened in how they framed the
- 9:47talk and also, you know, in inviting her in general.
- 9:51And I actually think, like, now that we've had some distance
- 9:55from the Colleen situation, it's been over.
- 9:58Well, I guess it's been almost a year and a half, almost a year
- 10:01and a half in December from when everything first started.
- 10:05I think, you know, it's interesting to look back because
- 10:09I believe in second chances. Depends what the person's done.
- 10:13But like I, I genuinely and generally do believe in second
- 10:16chances for people. I think when you live your youth
- 10:19out online, I think when you live so much of your life out
- 10:22online, you're publishing so frequently publicly in general,
- 10:26you know you're going to mess up.
- 10:27There's going to be things that you're not proud of, again,
- 10:32within reason. But I think in many instances
- 10:34what matters more is, you know, how those people end up moving
- 10:39on from that situation, reacting to that situation, addressing
- 10:43that situation. And also just like showing us,
- 10:46even if they haven't been called out, you know how their behavior
- 10:50changes over the years. Like, people do change and
- 10:53evolve, and people's beliefs change and their opinions on
- 10:57things change, especially as they get older.
- 10:59That aside, looking back at the Colleen Ballinger situation, it
- 11:06is like the Twilight Zone. I cannot believe that woman sat
- 11:12on the Internet and quite literally mocked all of these
- 11:19people that were calling her out.
- 11:20Not just the people that she hurt, like not just her fans,
- 11:23but just everyone in general who was saying hey, this behavior
- 11:26was not OK. Like what is going on?
- 11:28How did we not see this? How did you not see that this
- 11:30was inappropriate when you were a grown woman and she quite
- 11:34literally sat on the Internet and mocked everyone to their
- 11:39faces with a made-up children's song?
- 11:43And then after that was just like, hey, I'm back to vlogging.
- 11:47And, yeah, maybe that wasn't, like, the best move, but I still
- 11:52really didn't do anything wrong. Like, sorry.
- 11:57So yeah. Like, do I think that Colleen
- 11:59Ballinger should be speaking at high schools?
- 12:01No, Not because there are kids involved.
- 12:05And, you know, I think anything weird is going to happen there.
- 12:07I just, I think she doesn't deserve opportunities like that.
- 12:11She doesn't deserve to be platformed.
- 12:13And I don't even there's not even words for how little
- 12:17accountability she took because she really just like laughed at
- 12:20everybody. So that's my opinion on that.
- 12:24The last word that I wanted to talk about.
- 12:25So I wanted to address this tweet that is going viral.
- 12:30It has a stat. So this is going to sound a bit
- 12:33complicated until I explain it. So this tweet has a stat from
- 12:36the Wall Street Journal in it. And so this tweet reads insane
- 12:41stat from the Wall Street Journal that there are like 12
- 12:43million full time influencers in the US right now.
- 12:46That's 7% of the American workforce.
- 12:49No way a bubble like that is at all sustainable.
- 12:53So this tweet has over 1,000,000 views.
- 12:54It is, yeah, like I said, going viral and everyone's kind of
- 12:58debating if this is really a bubble, like what that stat
- 13:02really means. So I wanted to look into it
- 13:05further because I thought this is a very interesting tidbit.
- 13:09OK, so according to a report from the Keller Advisory Group
- 13:12titled Creators uncovered insights from a nationally
- 13:16representative study of US creators, they found out that
- 13:20out of 27 million paid creators in the US, quote, it is a full
- 13:25time job for 44% of them, which is 11.6 million with 32% which
- 13:31is 8.5 million doing it part time and 24 percent, 6.5 million
- 13:36doing it as a hobby, that there's a lot of hobbyists.
- 13:40There's also a lot of people doing full time influencing.
- 13:43According to the report quote full timers earn $179,000 per
- 13:47year versus $36,000 for part timers and $16,000 for
- 13:53hobbyists. So to put it into perspective,
- 13:56the 27 million paid content creators also represents 6% of
- 14:01Americans aged 16 to 54. When it comes to earnings, the
- 14:07average income for creators is $93,000 per year.
- 14:11However, this figure is skewed by top creators landing like 6
- 14:15figure brand deals and things like that, so it doesn't
- 14:18accurately reflect what most creators are making.
- 14:21It may be more accurate to look at the median, which sits around
- 14:26$10,000. As the report notes that
- 14:29approximately quote, half of creators make less than $10,000
- 14:32per year and 1/3 make under $2000 a year.
- 14:37So yes, this tweet was going viral and I was like, I need to
- 14:40look into these stats more. This sounds so vague and like
- 14:42how is that possible? The tweet feels like rage bait.
- 14:45I I don't think it is. I do not think that the original
- 14:48tweeter was trying to post anything inflammatory.
- 14:51I think that they were really just reading this like one off
- 14:54stat in this article and we're like, holy shit, this bubble is
- 14:59going to burst. And we've been talking about the
- 15:00influencer bubble bursting for a really long time.
- 15:02So he was like, this is not sustainable.
- 15:04And you know, it became this huge debate.
- 15:07However, when you look at the stats, it's clear that the
- 15:09actual money flowing into the creator economy is less than
- 15:15what that overarching stat might suggest or what you might imply
- 15:19from that. We think of like influencers and
- 15:21creators as multi millionaires but most of them are just if
- 15:26they are full time are making like middle of the road or
- 15:29slightly like better than middle of the road salaries.
- 15:32But still 11 million or nearly 12 million full time creators in
- 15:35the US. That still sounds like a giant
- 15:37number. However, that's also not taking
- 15:39into account how many jobs in multimedia, for example, could
- 15:44now be classified as like creators or even influencers.
- 15:47You know, if you think about like film makers or people that
- 15:50are trying to break into that entertainment space, they might
- 15:53be creating their own work for themselves and posting that on
- 15:58YouTube and on TikTok. And they're making money from,
- 16:00you know, Adsense or TikTok creator fund or even brand
- 16:03deals. But they in years past, you
- 16:07know, before social media would have been working in TV and film
- 16:09and they're using that to still work in, in TV and film or
- 16:12trying to work in TV and film. But they're making their own
- 16:15work to be able to have this portfolio.
- 16:18And therefore they are being labeled as like a creator or
- 16:21like an influencer because they're making money from social
- 16:23media by creating content, right?
- 16:25So I think when we hear stuff like this, it's important to
- 16:27like, dive into it a little bit more, especially because
- 16:32influencers, creators, like there's just such a stigma
- 16:36attached to their lifestyle, their income, how they make
- 16:40their money. And I think when you break it
- 16:43down a little bit more like this, it helps us digest.
- 16:48But regardless, like the creator economy, she's thriving.
- 16:50And I don't see this bubble bursting.
- 16:53Like the creator economy has replaced a lot of traditional
- 16:57media advertising, like I said, TV and film production roles,
- 17:02just it's just it's replaced so much or it's at least
- 17:05complimenting so much. And it's not all just like
- 17:09brands funneling money into this, right?
- 17:11Like a lot of it is from the platforms themselves, like
- 17:14YouTube, TikTok, I don't know, subscription models, things like
- 17:18that. So I just thought that was an
- 17:21interesting report to look at. Anyways, guys, that's it for
- 17:24today. Thank you so much for listening
