- 0:02Speaker 1: This is really cool. Jeff Kent finds out that he
- 0:06Speaker 1: is a Hall of Famer hours later, joining us right
- 0:08Speaker 1: now on foul Territory. Jeff, congratulations, like honor, long long,
- 0:14Speaker 1: long overdue. I've been one of those guys every job
- 0:17Speaker 1: I've been at MLB Network, here, whatever, So this was
- 0:20Speaker 1: really cool for me to see. What was it like
- 0:22Speaker 1: for you to hear the news?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Overwhelming because you know I had left the game, you know,
- 0:28Speaker 2: I being on the ballot for ten years and you know,
- 0:31Speaker 2: being about in the middle pack, you know, I kind
- 0:33Speaker 2: of understood the math, and you know, I'm more of
- 0:35Speaker 2: a realist and more of a mathematical guy, which is
- 0:38Speaker 2: you know, okay, it's not in the works. You know,
- 0:40Speaker 2: the arguments aren't good enough. That's fine, So I let
- 0:44Speaker 2: the game go. And the game has come rushing back
- 0:48Speaker 2: in a fast way. You know, the anticipation of this
- 0:52Speaker 2: wasn't there for me because I wasn't thinking about it,
- 0:55Speaker 2: didn't talk about it much. Agent mentioned it to me
- 0:58Speaker 2: a couple of days before happened. You said you better
- 1:01Speaker 2: stand by, and I said, yeah, okay, right. You know,
- 1:03Speaker 2: so we're out at the ranch hunting and fishing and
- 1:05Speaker 2: moving cows, and riding motorcycles and uh, you know, making
- 1:09Speaker 2: dinner for our the cast that we had at the house.
- 1:12Speaker 2: It wasn't a watch party, and uh, you know, the
- 1:15Speaker 2: call had come in and unprepared, that emotion just hits.
- 1:19Speaker 2: And let me tell you, you know, the fire extinguishers
- 1:21Speaker 2: in my eyes just went off, and uh that's how
- 1:24Speaker 2: the day went.
- 1:25Speaker 3: I just don't know why it took so long. I'll
- 1:28Speaker 3: tell you.
- 1:28Speaker 4: I fight.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I've been fighting for you for years. Thank you every
- 1:30Speaker 3: time the Hall of Fame boat comes up, all time
- 1:33Speaker 3: leader and home runs for a second baseman, you got
- 1:35Speaker 3: a World Series, you got an MVP, Like what else
- 1:37Speaker 3: you have to do? I just can't figure out how
- 1:39Speaker 3: it took so long. Yeah, Like to me, if I
- 1:42Speaker 3: look at I'm looking at your stats right now as
- 1:44Speaker 3: the second baseman to throw up these numbers? What took
- 1:47Speaker 3: so long? And I know you said you never thought
- 1:49Speaker 3: it would happen, But now that it's here, are you
- 1:51Speaker 3: gonna be like why did it take so long?
- 1:52Speaker 2: To some of these people, Well, I'm grateful for guys
- 1:55Speaker 2: like you. Both. You guys have arguing and debating about
- 1:58Speaker 2: that to keep me in the in the mix of
- 2:00Speaker 2: of an argument, you know, but I think if you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and I haven't answered it this way yet, but but
- 2:05Speaker 2: you've reminded me of something, is is I think too
- 2:08Speaker 2: much of what the Hall of Fame or or or
- 2:11Speaker 2: the media has done or the arguments have been, is
- 2:14Speaker 2: we try to compare my era to guys like Ryan
- 2:18Speaker 2: Sandberg total different area or Joe Morgan and I and
- 2:22Speaker 2: I kept hearing about, well Jeff Kent doesn't match up
- 2:25Speaker 2: to Joe Morgan in this category. Well, how we played
- 2:28Speaker 2: in different stadiums with the game was played differently, you know,
- 2:31Speaker 2: you played a long time, so you so for me,
- 2:34Speaker 2: the money lies in the RBIs was my mantra run produce.
- 2:38Speaker 2: You want to get paid, you.
- 2:41Speaker 3: You got you gotta drive in runs.
- 2:44Speaker 2: You got to produce runs. You got to drive in runs,
- 2:46Speaker 2: and you gotta score runs and and so so that's
- 2:49Speaker 2: kind of how my game was patterned. Is that's how
- 2:52Speaker 2: we won games driving in runs. And so so maybe
- 2:57Speaker 2: there has you know, that has something to do with
- 2:59Speaker 2: it where And I'm and I'm grateful that now that
- 3:02Speaker 2: you know, people compare me to my era and I
- 3:05Speaker 2: believed as a player as you did, that you were
- 3:06Speaker 2: the best guy I believe that.
- 3:10Speaker 1: Diferent.
- 3:11Speaker 2: I believed that was the best second basement in my era,
- 3:14Speaker 2: and I always wanted to be but it was I
- 3:16Speaker 2: wanted to be the best second basement for my team
- 3:18Speaker 2: so we could win, and and and all. That's kind
- 3:20Speaker 2: of how it pound out.
- 3:21Speaker 3: I love it. Yeah, I'm I'm just happy for him.
- 3:25Speaker 3: I mean, I'm happy because when I saw who was
- 3:28Speaker 3: on this ballot, and I'll fight to the death. You
- 3:31Speaker 3: played with Barry, and I played with Barry for a year,
- 3:34Speaker 3: best hitter I ever saw to me, love him or
- 3:37Speaker 3: hate him. The fact he's not into me is an
- 3:39Speaker 3: absolute joke. Clemens not in you know, Clemens, absolute joke,
- 3:43Speaker 3: no matter what you want to say. But you got
- 3:46Speaker 3: in before Barry, Yeah, the whole time.
- 3:50Speaker 2: All run guy, Well, you're right. I played with Barry
- 3:54Speaker 2: and Roger. Yeah, and Barry was, you know, one of
- 3:57Speaker 2: the best players I ever saw play the game, no doubt.
- 4:00Speaker 2: I played with Barry for a long time. He and
- 4:01Speaker 2: I butted heads, you know, made a big deal about No. No,
- 4:05Speaker 2: we fired each other. We lit each other's ass on fire.
- 4:08Speaker 2: He played well, I played well. He played a lot
- 4:10Speaker 2: better than I did. He was a good player and
- 4:13Speaker 2: Roger Clemens. He was that son of a bitch, was
- 4:15Speaker 2: a battler. He fought like hell all the time, and
- 4:19Speaker 2: fight and fight and fight. So I don't have a
- 4:22Speaker 2: boat in the game, so you know, I'll skirt the
- 4:25Speaker 2: answer everybody is you guys can go ahead and talk
- 4:28Speaker 2: about it. That's not my game, and I've tried to
- 4:30Speaker 2: stay away from that. But you know, those baseball, Baseball
- 4:35Speaker 2: has lost, even with Murph and Mattingly too, and those
- 4:38Speaker 2: guys Murph ought to be here. Baseball has lost a
- 4:41Speaker 2: generation of great players that I think ought to be
- 4:45Speaker 2: in the Hall of Fame. It's hard for me to
- 4:47Speaker 2: say that I'm just rookie at this, you know, matching
- 4:50Speaker 2: my name up compared to the other guys is it's
- 4:53Speaker 2: still hard for me to do. But I watched those
- 4:56Speaker 2: guys knowing that they were that great ought to be there.
- 5:00Speaker 2: I'm not saying that because I'm here now, but uh, Baseball,
- 5:03Speaker 2: I wish as a fan of the game, as a
- 5:06Speaker 2: as a player of the game, knowing that there were
- 5:08Speaker 2: so many great players before me, after me, or before
- 5:12Speaker 2: me and during my career, that you know that the game,
- 5:16Speaker 2: the museum has lost some of those players and you know,
- 5:19Speaker 2: Barry and Roger you know, may get lost, but you
- 5:22Speaker 2: know whether they're in or not. You know that's that's
- 5:24Speaker 2: not my choice. Brother.
- 5:25Speaker 1: Were you surprised that you saw your name? You get
- 5:27Speaker 1: the call and then you're like, who else? Because you
- 5:29Speaker 1: would be doing this tour with someone else and you're
- 5:32Speaker 1: riding solo and the voting process is complicated. They only
- 5:35Speaker 1: can vote for three.
- 5:36Speaker 2: Yeah, well, you're asking me another question I haven't answered.
- 5:38Speaker 2: I haven't had an answer to, which is when they
- 5:41Speaker 2: called me, they say, okay, Jeff, you're in, and I went, okay, thanks,
- 5:44Speaker 2: hung up the phone, and I'm sitting there going, uh,
- 5:47Speaker 2: I forgot to ask who else? So I'm watching with
- 5:50Speaker 2: my family because my family didn't know, and I said, hey,
- 5:53Speaker 2: let's just watch TV. You know, they were at the
- 5:55Speaker 2: ranch and I'm in dirty clothes and we're just watching
- 5:57Speaker 2: on TV MLB network on TV say just watch this.
- 6:00Speaker 2: So they didn't know. So I'm sitting there watching and
- 6:02Speaker 2: and then they come up and say only one player,
- 6:04Speaker 2: and I go I looked at my wife and I go,
- 6:07Speaker 2: holy crap, you got to be kidding me. More guys
- 6:10Speaker 2: aren't in. And it was Murph is who I was
- 6:12Speaker 2: really thinking and maddingly too. I play. You know, Manly
- 6:15Speaker 2: was a coach of mine, you know, love him too.
- 6:17Speaker 2: But uh, unbelievable that that it happened. And I got
- 6:22Speaker 2: a I got a shoulder. A lot of the media
- 6:23Speaker 2: attention to you. Nobody else when that phone call came.
- 6:26Speaker 3: You didn't tell.
- 6:26Speaker 2: Anybody I TV. I grabbed the wife while I'm crying
- 6:30Speaker 2: and holding having her hold me up so I don't
- 6:33Speaker 2: fall down. And then we had to sit down at
- 6:35Speaker 2: the table because we were actually putting dinner on the
- 6:37Speaker 2: table at the ranch. And and so I mean the
- 6:41Speaker 2: garlic bread was coming out of the oven. You know,
- 6:43Speaker 2: you got to eat garlic bread warm. So we were
- 6:46Speaker 2: right there at that moment when the call came in.
- 6:48Speaker 2: So talk to her for two three minutes. Uh, Jane
- 6:52Speaker 2: had called me and then sat at the table hurry
- 6:56Speaker 2: up and ate baked spaghetti and garlic bread while I
- 6:59Speaker 2: got the TV going on the background, and my wife knew.
- 7:02Speaker 2: So my wife had told everybody, Hey, maybe we ought
- 7:04Speaker 2: to go and living or watch TV. So nobody knew.
- 7:07Speaker 2: And so with the family friends of ours, and then
- 7:09Speaker 2: my two boys were there, Uh with their.
- 7:12Speaker 3: G How long of a timeframe are we talked? They
- 7:14Speaker 3: so who called you? Jane?
- 7:16Speaker 2: Jane did, yeah, so how long like it say?
- 7:18Speaker 3: She called you at six o'clock? And then it was right,
- 7:22Speaker 3: it was right.
- 7:22Speaker 2: It was right before six, yeah, right before six. And
- 7:25Speaker 2: you know you I hold it in. So I got
- 7:28Speaker 2: a rag on my lap wiping tears down while I'm
- 7:30Speaker 2: eating spaghetti, and that's like, well, my boy was looking
- 7:34Speaker 2: at me, like because I never played with my phone
- 7:35Speaker 2: at the at the table, so my boy was looking
- 7:38Speaker 2: at me, going, what are you watching the.
- 7:39Speaker 3: Game down there?
- 7:40Speaker 2: Dad?
- 7:41Speaker 1: This is my boy.
- 7:42Speaker 2: This is my twenty one year old's twenty two year
- 7:44Speaker 2: old son to play for the Yankees. And I said, no, no,
- 7:47Speaker 2: I'm I'm I'm all right.
- 7:48Speaker 5: Wow.
- 7:50Speaker 3: I don't know if I could have kept that one in.
- 7:51Speaker 1: That was well played.
- 7:52Speaker 3: I don't know if I could have kept that one
- 7:54Speaker 3: in though, because I would have probably been running down
- 7:56Speaker 3: the street naked saying I'm in the Hall of Fame.
- 7:58Speaker 2: Well it was, uh, let me tell you, it was
- 8:01Speaker 2: a It was a tough moment when Jane had called
- 8:03Speaker 2: Jane's awesome. You know, she she acted like a mother
- 8:06Speaker 2: figure to me when she was calming me down. I
- 8:09Speaker 2: had my grandson who was in the background crying. My
- 8:12Speaker 2: boys were helping with dinner, set the table. Dad is
- 8:15Speaker 2: over there screwing around on the phone, and they're all
- 8:17Speaker 2: looking at me like, what the hell are you doing?
- 8:18Speaker 4: Dad?
- 8:18Speaker 2: And so so I kind of I was kind of
- 8:21Speaker 2: presenting this to them as that because my boy. More
- 8:25Speaker 2: to the story, my boy is always fighting me, because
- 8:27Speaker 2: I'm always telling hey, son, you gotta do this, this
- 8:29Speaker 2: and this. Well, what he does? You look, Dad, you're
- 8:31Speaker 2: not in the Hall of Fame. You kept telling me
- 8:33Speaker 2: doing that.
- 8:34Speaker 4: That's what That's what I did.
- 8:36Speaker 2: When I afterwards, I said, I hugged him. I said,
- 8:39Speaker 2: good luck to you now, kid.
- 8:41Speaker 1: Right, all right?
- 8:42Speaker 3: So I got asked the question what team Giants?
- 8:46Speaker 2: Well, for me, you know, I'm not picking, but I
- 8:49Speaker 2: think it's obvious. The Giants is when my career finally
- 8:53Speaker 2: flipped and turned. You know, when I got to San Francisco,
- 8:56Speaker 2: I had been I'd been nurtured through you know, the
- 8:58Speaker 2: New York Mets. You know, I guess you could say
- 9:01Speaker 2: refined through the Mets, playing in that tough environment, and
- 9:05Speaker 2: then I get to you know it. You know, Jerry
- 9:09Speaker 2: Hunsicker was with the Mets and the Flying going to
- 9:14Speaker 2: Cleveland for two months, and then they traded me over.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Brian Sabian and Ned Cltie picked me up from Cleveland
- 9:23Speaker 2: for Matt Williams in San Francisco. And by that time,
- 9:27Speaker 2: you know, my career was ready. I played, I think
- 9:29Speaker 2: I played fairly well in New York, but my career
- 9:31Speaker 2: was ready to finally take off. Dusty Baker. Of all
- 9:36Speaker 2: the managers I've had my career, I don't think there
- 9:39Speaker 2: was anybody better that knew how to push the right
- 9:42Speaker 2: buttons to get the best out of player. And he
- 9:45Speaker 2: didn't want just you and what you did. He wanted
- 9:48Speaker 2: more of what you could do. And that's that's what
- 9:51Speaker 2: he presented to me, is is I want you to
- 9:53Speaker 2: give me.
- 9:54Speaker 4: More, Jeff, give me more.
- 9:56Speaker 2: Be as good as Barry, be as good as some
- 9:58Speaker 2: of these other guys that had come before you. He
- 10:02Speaker 2: Dusty would talk a lot about Bobby Bonds too and
- 10:04Speaker 2: how he it, and he wanted more out of me.
- 10:07Speaker 2: And he didn't compare me to those guys, but he
- 10:09Speaker 2: was trying to push me, and you know, and that's
- 10:11Speaker 2: what propelled my career in San Francisco. Played the longest
- 10:14Speaker 2: time in San Francisco went to the World Series, won
- 10:17Speaker 2: the MVP. So you know my other other teams Houston and.
- 10:23Speaker 5: LA.
- 10:23Speaker 2: You know, two years in Houston and four years in LA.
- 10:26Speaker 2: So you know, how do you argue that it might
- 10:28Speaker 2: not be San Francisco.
- 10:29Speaker 1: Yeah, that makes sense. What about a reach out? So
- 10:31Speaker 1: it hasn't been that much time, And of course the
- 10:34Speaker 1: best call is from the Hall itself and from Jane,
- 10:36Speaker 1: but anybody notable so far that's worth shouting out, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: take us inside. Did you get a text from an
- 10:44Speaker 1: old teammate or a celebrity or just somebody that was like,
- 10:47Speaker 1: oh wow, it's cool, this is really cool to reach out.
- 10:49Speaker 2: I got, Yeah, you know, just some of the former
- 10:51Speaker 2: Hall of Fame guys, the guys that I watched back
- 10:53Speaker 2: in the old days. Alan Trammel was one of them.
- 10:56Speaker 2: You know, I bet your money Sandberg, you know, rest
- 10:59Speaker 2: his soul, he would have reached out to me. You know,
- 11:01Speaker 2: he was a guy that I really appreciated, that played
- 11:04Speaker 2: the game, and he was a guy that I wanted
- 11:05Speaker 2: to be better than only because he was that good.
- 11:08Speaker 2: He set the bar and and all athletes ought to
- 11:12Speaker 2: pick a narrow focus on who they want to be
- 11:15Speaker 2: or be better than and and be better than that
- 11:18Speaker 2: guy and and and I hope my kid does the
- 11:20Speaker 2: same to.
- 11:20Speaker 3: Me, So is your son now going to try and
- 11:22Speaker 3: be better than dead?
- 11:23Speaker 2: Well, he better now because the one thing he's got
- 11:26Speaker 2: on me is he doesn't have a championship. And that's
- 11:28Speaker 2: probably the most disappointing part of my career is is
- 11:31Speaker 2: is I don't have a an official championship.
- 11:35Speaker 3: Talked about this today, But so you were on Blue
- 11:39Speaker 3: Jays in ninety two. Yeah, so you were.
- 11:41Speaker 2: Got I got traded for Coney at the last day
- 11:44Speaker 2: of the trade.
- 11:46Speaker 1: Yeah, but he's saying he didn't get to.
- 11:49Speaker 2: What I need to get the stream. I didn't get
- 11:51Speaker 2: to be that guy who's all doused up in beer
- 11:54Speaker 2: and champagne, sitting on the floor in his underwear and
- 11:58Speaker 2: everybody's gone, and you get to sit on the floor
- 12:01Speaker 2: in the corner by yourself and just go there's nothing
- 12:05Speaker 2: else to do.
- 12:06Speaker 3: It's better, It's better than you think. No, I'm sorry
- 12:09Speaker 3: for you for that. And I knew at least you
- 12:11Speaker 3: got a ring. Yeah right, I've traded in. You want
- 12:14Speaker 3: all of mine just so you can help me do there?
- 12:15Speaker 3: You give me all your rings I'll take I'll give
- 12:18Speaker 3: you my ring, give me the all of fame.
- 12:21Speaker 1: That's really good. Well, Jeff, we really appreciate you stopping by. Congratulations.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, thank you, well deserved. It's about time. Things that
- 12:30Speaker 3: I've ever seen, so I'm really happy one of those
- 12:33Speaker 3: for two thousand and four.
- 12:34Speaker 1: Hey, the Giants, the ballot was packed, all this stuff.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I get it right, there's lots of our part of
- 12:39Speaker 1: the problems. But you were talking about it is like
- 12:40Speaker 1: there's certain players that were not getting you know, voted in,
- 12:43Speaker 1: and then it just gets messy. There's a lot of
- 12:44Speaker 1: guys at forty percent and whatever. So you were just
- 12:47Speaker 1: one where we're like, Jeff Kent's got to be in right, like,
- 12:50Speaker 1: look at those stats for a second basement. So anyway,
- 12:53Speaker 1: appreciate it.
- 12:53Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, thanks for.
- 12:54Speaker 2: Being baseball man. Thanks for what you guys do for
- 12:56Speaker 2: baseball too.
- 12:57Speaker 1: Thank you. That's on on Derek and then what that's
- 13:01Speaker 1: going to look like.
- 13:02Speaker 6: Honestly, I look, he was a really good candidate in
- 13:06Speaker 6: twenty nineteen when Roco got the job, right.
- 13:09Speaker 1: I was having conversations with.
- 13:10Speaker 6: Him in the days up until it, thinking he was
- 13:13Speaker 6: gonna get the job, and they love him they love
- 13:15Speaker 6: the communication. I think that they get the enhanced version
- 13:19Speaker 6: of him now, the guy that has learned and you
- 13:22Speaker 6: can hear it. And I talked to a lot of
- 13:24Speaker 6: people at the GM meetings last month about how he
- 13:27Speaker 6: spent his time after getting fired, and he went and.
- 13:31Speaker 4: Basically looked for how do I improve myself?
- 13:34Speaker 1: How do I change?
- 13:35Speaker 6: And he's talking to Ben Cherington about this, he's talking
- 13:38Speaker 6: to Tim Bloom, He's talking to all his friends in
- 13:41Speaker 6: the game that he has massed over twenty years at
- 13:43Speaker 6: the major league level and trying to like learn from
- 13:46Speaker 6: what didn't go right in Pittsburgh. I think that's a
- 13:48Speaker 6: very healthy way to kind of go about things. And
- 13:52Speaker 6: if you're getting that version, and he already has a
- 13:54Speaker 6: rapport with the front office, I think it's a good
- 13:56Speaker 6: move for the Twins.
- 13:59Speaker 1: It's funny. This is going to be the great transition
- 14:02Speaker 1: that I stole from someone on social media. Derek Shelton
- 14:05Speaker 1: goes from the pirates who don't want to spend a
- 14:08Speaker 1: penny during the entire time period. YEP, I need aj
- 14:11Speaker 1: to hear this joke too.
- 14:12Speaker 3: Right, Sean Harlan Twins legend, what's up?
- 14:16Speaker 1: Derek Shelton goes from the Pirates for years, they don't
- 14:18Speaker 1: spend a literal dime gets hired by the Twins. Now
- 14:21Speaker 1: we're talking about if the Twins are gonna get rid
- 14:23Speaker 1: of his Stars, while the Pirates just threw an offer
- 14:26Speaker 1: out to Kyle Orber So lucky Derek. But that's my
- 14:29Speaker 1: transition again as to what do you think is going
- 14:31Speaker 1: to happen with the Twins over the offseason, Because it
- 14:34Speaker 1: sounded like they were going to trade one or two
- 14:36Speaker 1: of the three, right, Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan and maybe
- 14:39Speaker 1: Byron Buxton and then Ken Rosenthal. Your colleagues report the
- 14:42Speaker 1: other day made it seem like they're not going to
- 14:44Speaker 1: trade any of them, right.
- 14:45Speaker 6: So I think that they've been saying that but didn't
- 14:50Speaker 6: have clarity on what they want to do. Derek Falvey
- 14:52Speaker 6: at the GM meetings said he wanted to build around
- 14:55Speaker 6: Pablo Lopez, Joe Ryan, and Byron Buckson. In that wish
- 15:01Speaker 6: seem far fetched. Look, the ownership situation is still in
- 15:04Speaker 6: flux now it does. I've been told it's on track.
- 15:06Speaker 6: I've been told that they are gonna have it finalized
- 15:09Speaker 6: by the end of the year, and.
- 15:10Speaker 4: They have any selling or keep the twenty thirty percent,
- 15:13Speaker 4: whatever it is.
- 15:15Speaker 6: But basically, Derrek Falby went in saying, I would like
- 15:18Speaker 6: to do this, I would like to have these guys
- 15:20Speaker 6: on board. Now it sounds like he's gotten some more
- 15:23Speaker 6: certainty towards that, and that means that Byron bucks and
- 15:25Speaker 6: Byron Buckson wants to go if they're not winning, if
- 15:29Speaker 6: they're tearing down, which is totally understandable. Byron Buckson loves Minnesota.
- 15:33Speaker 6: It's a great market. He's he's grown up there. He
- 15:36Speaker 6: committed to, Like he said, I'm a Twin for life.
- 15:39Speaker 6: But he also wants assurances they're going to be playing
- 15:41Speaker 6: for this And it sounds like everybody's hearing the same thing,
- 15:45Speaker 6: that the Twins are going to build up around this,
- 15:48Speaker 6: and what does that really mean?
- 15:50Speaker 1: Look, this is right now.
- 15:52Speaker 6: I think the other day Fangrafts projected them to be
- 15:54Speaker 6: eighty two and eighty So that's not great. But if
- 15:58Speaker 6: you can add twenty million dollars and payroll and get
- 16:00Speaker 6: to one fifteen, you're gonna outspend most of your division.
- 16:04Speaker 1: You're who knows what the Tigers are doing with school?
- 16:06Speaker 6: Who knows if schoobol they're an injury from schooball away
- 16:09Speaker 6: from being in bad spot themselves. Cleveland doesn't seem like
- 16:13Speaker 6: it's gonna spend. So, you know, does an eighty five
- 16:16Speaker 6: win team have a shot in n Ail Central if
- 16:18Speaker 6: you can get there.
- 16:20Speaker 1: I mean, it's a lot of work.
- 16:21Speaker 6: To get to maybe two or three more wins, and
- 16:24Speaker 6: that doesn't when you do the mat I'm like, my
- 16:28Speaker 6: mind says you should tear it down. But you also
- 16:30Speaker 6: are at a point with your fan base where you've
- 16:33Speaker 6: lost them. You need to start gaining them back. And
- 16:37Speaker 6: so I think they're proceeding forward. I still don't know
- 16:40Speaker 6: what that looks like. And it's gonna be a lot
- 16:42Speaker 6: of work to get to eighty five wins.
- 16:44Speaker 7: All the trade, everything it revolves around Byron Buxton. Yes,
- 16:47Speaker 7: you said he wants to be there for life, all
- 16:49Speaker 7: that stuff. Everyone's saying, well, if they trade Joe Ryan,
- 16:52Speaker 7: if they trade Pablo Lopez, all this is there a
- 16:55Speaker 7: case where they don't make any moves, And Byron says, wait, wait, wait,
- 16:59Speaker 7: wait wait, we're not getting it. We haven't gotten any better.
- 17:02Speaker 7: I know you haven't traded those pitchers. I would still
- 17:05Speaker 7: like out because there's a chance he could say yes.
- 17:10Speaker 6: I think that he wants to know that they're not
- 17:13Speaker 6: tearing it further down. And look, they can do a
- 17:16Speaker 6: lot with a little Last year they had ten million
- 17:18Speaker 6: in free agency. They got Harrison Vader, they got Danny Koolohm,
- 17:22Speaker 6: and they got Ty France and they did pretty well
- 17:24Speaker 6: for themselves as far as the production.
- 17:26Speaker 1: They got for ten million dollars.
- 17:28Speaker 6: They are the team that typically shops at the end
- 17:31Speaker 6: of January early February. They Donovan Solano signed for two
- 17:35Speaker 6: million bucks a couple of years ago.
- 17:36Speaker 1: When they won the division. They're good at finding these guys.
- 17:38Speaker 6: They got Carlos Santana and got him the big one
- 17:42Speaker 6: year deal with Cleveland.
- 17:44Speaker 1: They got him for five million dollars. They find these guys.
- 17:46Speaker 6: I think there's enough to still operate and make Byron
- 17:52Speaker 6: think they are going to win. But the one thing
- 17:53Speaker 6: this all centers around is they're starting rotation right now
- 17:57Speaker 6: as it's projected, you know, with Pabe Lopez, with Joe Ryan,
- 18:02Speaker 6: with Bailey over with TOAJ Bradley. It's the seventh best
- 18:05Speaker 6: rotation in baseball. So you have a lot of cheap,
- 18:08Speaker 6: affordable starting pitching that's young and talented. And if they
- 18:12Speaker 6: can mold these guys, and that's Look, this is all
- 18:14Speaker 6: very dependent on guys living up to their abilities.
- 18:19Speaker 1: Essentially, they need young players. You know this, you.
- 18:22Speaker 6: Were there for it all. It's just twenty years later,
- 18:26Speaker 6: like you need the young guys to play up to
- 18:28Speaker 6: their abilities. They have a lot of young talent. But
- 18:30Speaker 6: I think they feel like that that rotation is a
- 18:33Speaker 6: good backbone to build off of and maybe we can
- 18:36Speaker 6: get there.
- 18:36Speaker 1: Yeah, ranked that I think it's Fangrafts.
- 18:38Speaker 3: Okay, because I was I never heard anyone say that
- 18:42Speaker 3: they're the seventh best rotation.
- 18:43Speaker 6: Yeah, the projections came out there today and Fangrafts had
- 18:46Speaker 6: them at eighty two and eighty.
- 18:47Speaker 3: I mean wow, even without doing anything, without doing that's no.
- 18:51Speaker 3: Obviously there's other moves and maybe a seventy five.
- 18:55Speaker 1: What would they have Matt last year? By the way, right,
- 18:58Speaker 1: look they've been they lost ninety two games. They probably
- 19:01Speaker 1: had him at five hundred life but when.
- 19:02Speaker 6: They were okay, they were a five hundred club at
- 19:04Speaker 6: the time of the selloff, So they lost ninety two
- 19:06Speaker 6: games because they traded ten guys.
- 19:08Speaker 4: I mean, I'm surprised I didn't get traded, Like, I trust.
- 19:10Speaker 3: Me, he tried. Nobody wanted you that was the problem.
- 19:13Speaker 1: I know I was.
- 19:15Speaker 4: I was willing to throw in cash, but now you
- 19:18Speaker 4: know it.
- 19:18Speaker 6: Definitely, the projection systems are always a little off, and
- 19:23Speaker 6: the Twins have been off three to four wins a
- 19:25Speaker 6: couple of times. They have an entirely new coaching staff.
- 19:28Speaker 6: They have major leaguers on the coaching staff. It's gonna
- 19:30Speaker 6: be a very interesting mix. You know, Grady Size more,
- 19:33Speaker 6: LaTroy Hawkins. It's it's gonna be. They need to sell
- 19:38Speaker 6: some hope, I think, is really what this is coming
- 19:40Speaker 6: down to you. If you trade Joe Ryan right now now, granted,
- 19:43Speaker 6: if you trade Joe Ryan and got multiple major league
- 19:45Speaker 6: pieces back, that's one thing. If you if you made
- 19:47Speaker 6: the Matt Williams trade and got Jeff Kent and Jose
- 19:50Speaker 6: Vizcaino back.
- 19:51Speaker 1: Like you know that, that's a like a one.
- 19:54Speaker 3: In a million. But can they compete with what they have?
- 19:58Speaker 3: I know, eighty two and eighty, but can they really
- 20:01Speaker 3: compete with what they have? I mean yeah, So basically
- 20:05Speaker 3: the reason they're not tearing it down is because of
- 20:07Speaker 3: the division. They're right, and they believe that if with
- 20:09Speaker 3: a couple of pieces out it, they can win this division.
- 20:12Speaker 3: But then my next question is somebody that I do
- 20:14Speaker 3: like the Twins. I like the organization. There's still a
- 20:16Speaker 3: million people that I know from when I was there
- 20:18Speaker 3: twenty five years ago. But my question is is that
- 20:21Speaker 3: enough competing and then getting in right because let's say
- 20:25Speaker 3: it doesn't go right, Yeah, and then it gets to
- 20:27Speaker 3: July again, they trade ten more guys. Like the fans
- 20:29Speaker 3: are as you know, are already on kind of edge.
- 20:32Speaker 1: Oh they are. That's exactly what's going to happen. Though,
- 20:34Speaker 1: by the way, if it doesn't go right, they'll do
- 20:35Speaker 1: it again. That's I think that's a plan.
- 20:38Speaker 6: Like you sell the idea that you you can't just
- 20:43Speaker 6: get out right now.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Your your ticket base is already very low as it is.
- 20:48Speaker 6: If you tell them right now you're trading Joe Ryan
- 20:50Speaker 6: and Pablo Lopez and especially Byron Buckson, especially when Barron
- 20:53Speaker 6: Buckson Twin for life, you're going to decimate that fan base.
- 20:56Speaker 4: So you go in, you take a shot at it, because.
- 20:59Speaker 6: The centrals win, and if you're in a good spot,
- 21:02Speaker 6: they have a really good farm system with it. They're
- 21:04Speaker 6: loaded with outfielders, with young outfielders at Triple A and
- 21:08Speaker 6: Double A like there's talent to move around if you're
- 21:12Speaker 6: in a position to win. But I just don't know
- 21:15Speaker 6: how you could just crush the fans again before the
- 21:18Speaker 6: season even starts, so knowing that you can win the division, like,
- 21:23Speaker 6: I guess that that this motivation. I mean, look, two
- 21:26Speaker 6: years ago fans were so high off of beating Toronto
- 21:30Speaker 6: and winning the first playoff game or first playoff game.
- 21:32Speaker 1: And since two thousand and.
- 21:33Speaker 6: Four series, since you guys beat the A's like and
- 21:38Speaker 6: then end. Yes, I have quoted you on that, but
- 21:42Speaker 6: the you know, I mean, you think about it and
- 21:45Speaker 6: it's it's doable, but it's just a lot of work
- 21:48Speaker 6: and a lot of things have to go right, and
- 21:50Speaker 6: so you kind of have you realize how risky it is.
- 21:55Speaker 3: I just don't know. It's got I don't know. I mean,
- 21:57Speaker 3: I love Shelton. I've known Sheldon forever.
- 21:58Speaker 4: Yeah, way, what do you.
- 21:59Speaker 1: Want when you say I don't know?
- 22:01Speaker 3: I just they're not going to.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Dollars pay I would because that's not it's not happ
- 22:06Speaker 1: serve that at some point the Q score in Minnesota
- 22:09Speaker 1: for the Twins is about as low as it's ever
- 22:11Speaker 1: been right now because of everything.
- 22:13Speaker 3: He just talked about but I would love for them.
- 22:15Speaker 3: I mean, I know they got Korea.
- 22:17Speaker 1: The fans. He told that the fans he was selling
- 22:20Speaker 1: and they were like, thank god, it's been decades of this.
- 22:21Speaker 1: And then he said, just kidding, I'm actually the right guy.
- 22:24Speaker 1: I'm just kidding. That's the worst.
- 22:26Speaker 3: Thing you could actually actually didn't it go we're selling,
- 22:29Speaker 3: but we want Joe to still have a job.
- 22:31Speaker 6: And then no, no, okay, Joe wanted to oversee the transition.
- 22:34Speaker 6: I think there was a little bit of a message
- 22:35Speaker 6: mixed up.
- 22:36Speaker 1: I think we were freaking out of that.
- 22:38Speaker 4: Of course, stay on, we're talking about Joe.
- 22:41Speaker 6: But of course now they're selling a portion of the
- 22:43Speaker 6: team and he is staying on, so like he is
- 22:46Speaker 6: going to get to be the control guy.
- 22:47Speaker 1: This is a sweet deal.
- 22:48Speaker 4: How long, right? I think didn't they just sell down
- 22:51Speaker 4: their death though?
- 22:52Speaker 3: Really?
- 22:52Speaker 1: Yes?
- 22:52Speaker 6: And I think this is something to make the team
- 22:55Speaker 6: more attractive in two years.
- 22:56Speaker 1: I look, you're you're looking at right now.
- 22:58Speaker 6: They had five hundred million dollars debt or four hundred
- 23:00Speaker 6: and four point thirty, but we're talking about like interest
- 23:04Speaker 6: on that was somewhere around forty to fifty million dollars
- 23:06Speaker 6: a year. People were wondering where the debt comes from.
- 23:09Speaker 6: Two or three years ago, they were looking at they
- 23:11Speaker 6: were going into twenty twenty, they were looking at two
- 23:13Speaker 6: point three million tickets sold. They'd sold that the year before.
- 23:16Speaker 6: The pandemic happens. They just brought in Josh Johnson. No fans,
- 23:21Speaker 6: No think about all that lost revenue. The Washington Nationals
- 23:24Speaker 6: had the same exact thing happened to them. They had
- 23:26Speaker 6: won the World Series. They were looking for a big
- 23:28Speaker 6: business here. The Twins somehow kept all their employees. They
- 23:32Speaker 6: didn't furlough anybody. They cost themselves a ton of money
- 23:34Speaker 6: that way. Twenty twenty one was terrible. They drew one
- 23:37Speaker 6: point three million fans. Twenty twenty two was one point eight.
- 23:41Speaker 6: They get Korea doesn't resonate with the fans.
- 23:44Speaker 1: Wait, I need to bast forward this because then in
- 23:46Speaker 1: twenty twenty three, it's magical they still in a playoff series.
- 23:51Speaker 1: And then what do they do rug the fans? I know, right,
- 23:54Speaker 1: they saved by cutting some budget in that narrative could
- 23:58Speaker 1: have been reversed. It was maket sales and potentially success
- 24:01Speaker 1: on the field. That's the part the messaging. The pull
- 24:04Speaker 1: out has no feel for how to run an operation.
- 24:07Speaker 1: I'm telling you that's it's a no brainer kind of thing.
- 24:10Speaker 6: I mean that messaging, the timing of it was so
- 24:13Speaker 6: rough for them, and I think if they could do
- 24:16Speaker 6: it again.
- 24:17Speaker 4: You know, Look, they lost their their TV deal that year.
- 24:20Speaker 6: Like they went from sixty million guaranteed, which was in
- 24:23Speaker 6: baseball terms, a horrible TV deal compared to all these
- 24:27Speaker 6: other teams. They were the one that's I think one
- 24:30Speaker 6: or two as far as the worst and TV. And
- 24:32Speaker 6: now they're on MLB TV and I there's no way
- 24:35Speaker 6: they're making even sixty million.
- 24:36Speaker 1: So they knew what was coming.
- 24:38Speaker 6: They had to cut payroll at some point in this
- 24:40Speaker 6: you're paying money to get target field every year. I
- 24:42Speaker 6: think that the twenty five million is their rent there.
- 24:45Speaker 6: They're paying interest on the debt. So before you've thrown
- 24:49Speaker 6: a pitch, you're your fifty or sixty five million in
- 24:52Speaker 6: the hole right there.
- 24:53Speaker 3: Leg but you can leg.
- 24:54Speaker 1: And also that we can make that actually the whole organ.
- 24:59Speaker 6: Yeah, I think there's a whole players association that would
- 25:02Speaker 6: love to see those bus yes tell yeah, but you know,
- 25:05Speaker 6: I mean you look at it and so you can
- 25:07Speaker 6: understand maybe why they felt they needed to do that,
- 25:10Speaker 6: but the timing of it was just terrible. It took,
- 25:12Speaker 6: like you said, it pulled the royout from under fans
- 25:14Speaker 6: who were so excited and it's just been two years
- 25:16Speaker 6: of misery since.
- 25:17Speaker 1: So last thing here, and just give me a thumbs
- 25:21Speaker 1: up or down. Do any of the three that we
- 25:23Speaker 1: started this conversation off with actually get traded or do
- 25:26Speaker 1: you agree with what Ken's hearing right? Which that can change,
- 25:31Speaker 1: But do you think opening day those three right and
- 25:34Speaker 1: Lopez Buxton are on the Twins Because for our audience,
- 25:37Speaker 1: national audience, they want to know if any of their
- 25:39Speaker 1: teams can acquire those guys. So this is a big answer.
- 25:41Speaker 6: Okay, the only way that they're not is if the
- 25:44Speaker 6: Twins get a deal that improves them immediately, where you
- 25:49Speaker 6: trade Joe Ryan and you get two and a half
- 25:51Speaker 6: major leaguers and another guy something like that.
- 25:56Speaker 1: They're not going to tear down.
- 25:58Speaker 6: That's my belief. They're not going to tear down at
- 26:00Speaker 6: this point. If they traded Joe Ryan, it would have
- 26:03Speaker 6: to be to get healthier, which Joe Ryan is the
- 26:06Speaker 6: type of player that could get you healthier because of
- 26:08Speaker 6: the desire to a frontline starting pitcher like that, So
- 26:12Speaker 6: I could see that, but I think that that's the
- 26:15Speaker 6: kind of the caveat they if they can't get better,
- 26:18Speaker 6: they'll they'll try to find free agent bargains. Maybe they
- 26:21Speaker 6: trade you know, Bailey Ober, maybe they trade Trevor Larnick
- 26:24Speaker 6: guys like that.
- 26:25Speaker 1: And shift money around.
- 26:26Speaker 6: But I truly think they probably won't get that deal
- 26:30Speaker 6: for Joe and then go forward with this group.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Got it? Okay, Dan, Good to see you. Appreciate you, guys. Yeah,
- 26:35Speaker 1: that's Dan Hayes. You can follow all of his work
- 26:37Speaker 1: Twitter and also including the great articles in The Athletic
- 26:40Speaker 1: that finds are a hot number right now, maybe about
- 26:42Speaker 1: the Fizzle. If their guys aren't available, hey we're back side.
- 26:45Speaker 1: If Sharma is here, and you can check out all
- 26:48Speaker 1: of his work in the Athletic covering the Cubs, and
- 26:49Speaker 1: you can listen to him on Northside Territory all the
- 26:52Speaker 1: time with Patrick Mooney. Good to see you, I see you, guys.
- 26:56Speaker 1: Let's get right into Baz. You've been writing and talking
- 26:59Speaker 1: about how the Hubs might dance. What do you always
- 27:02Speaker 1: like to say? You say, kiddie pool, So then what's
- 27:04Speaker 1: the opposite of that? Deepend deepend maybe be participating in
- 27:08Speaker 1: the deep end this year for free agents and maybe
- 27:11Speaker 1: signings as well. Can you elaborate on that.
- 27:14Speaker 5: Yeah, I mean they're interested in Alex Bregman right now?
- 27:16Speaker 5: What's what's the market for Alex Bregman. It's kind of
- 27:19Speaker 5: the same as it was last year, at least the
- 27:21Speaker 5: finalists of last year, Boston, Detroit and the Cubs. Detroit
- 27:26Speaker 5: is similar to the Cubs in the sense that they
- 27:28Speaker 5: don't seem to want to be super aggressive and and
- 27:31Speaker 5: just like blow out their their budget for a big
- 27:36Speaker 5: name guy. That's that's kind of like what they've done
- 27:39Speaker 5: the past couple of years, right, and the Cubs have
- 27:41Speaker 5: done that at touch they're completely different.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Okay, that's just the Cubs and the Tigers. That's what
- 27:46Speaker 3: you're comparing.
- 27:47Speaker 5: Well, Oh, I mean this is not my This is
- 27:49Speaker 5: not me endorsing that.
- 27:54Speaker 3: That's like six seven.
- 27:55Speaker 4: Those are not I don't even nobody even knows what
- 27:56Speaker 4: you means.
- 27:58Speaker 5: Those are the behaviors of those Yeah, Scott Harris.
- 28:02Speaker 3: Did come from the Cubs. That's where you learned it from. Yeah,
- 28:05Speaker 3: let's go Cubs.
- 28:06Speaker 1: I don't.
- 28:08Speaker 5: I think what they're looking for here is for Boston
- 28:11Speaker 5: to end up with another bat that's not Alex Bregman.
- 28:15Speaker 5: That happens and suddenly the market collapses for Bregman and
- 28:19Speaker 5: you're in like.
- 28:20Speaker 4: A two team race with Detroit.
- 28:22Speaker 5: And I think I could see the Cubs, you know,
- 28:24Speaker 5: ending up with Bregman. That's the position player side. Their
- 28:27Speaker 5: priorities pitching. They're going to add pitching. Whether it's one
- 28:31Speaker 5: name I haven't heard with them is Framber Valdez, and
- 28:34Speaker 5: I believe that's an age related thing. He's over thirty.
- 28:38Speaker 5: That's going to be a top tier contract. I don't
- 28:40Speaker 5: think they want to give that contract to a guy
- 28:42Speaker 5: at that age, but he fits perfectly for the Cubs.
- 28:45Speaker 1: That's the type of picture you'd love to see.
- 28:47Speaker 5: A postseason history gets the ball on the ground, does
- 28:50Speaker 5: get swing and miss two with that defense, Framber Valdez,
- 28:52Speaker 5: I feel like.
- 28:53Speaker 4: Would be a stud. He already is a stud, but
- 28:55Speaker 4: like even better. Uh.
- 28:57Speaker 5: I just don't. I don't think that's the direction they're going.
- 28:59Speaker 5: They were in on cease. I think that's the most
- 29:02Speaker 5: frustrating thing for fans to hear they were in. They
- 29:04Speaker 5: were they were at Yeah, they were bidding on that guy,
- 29:08Speaker 5: but they obviously didn't spend enough or or put enough
- 29:13Speaker 5: money on the table for him.
- 29:16Speaker 4: Sure, I think it's am.
- 29:18Speaker 5: I, it's match Gallen and and Michael King.
- 29:22Speaker 4: Those are the three names that I have heard the most.
- 29:27Speaker 5: They haven't put the full court pressure on King just yet,
- 29:30Speaker 5: but I do think that's it's kind of like playing games,
- 29:32Speaker 5: trying to wait to see where that market goes. Uh
- 29:35Speaker 5: those but I would expect one of those three to
- 29:38Speaker 5: be a cup And I think that's you know, is
- 29:42Speaker 5: this the what you want to see from the Cubs
- 29:44Speaker 5: in the sense that, you know, going after Kyle Tucker,
- 29:48Speaker 5: going after Dylan sing after I know, but I'm saying
- 29:51Speaker 5: free agency, going after the very top of free agency.
- 29:55Speaker 5: I don't think they're they're doing that, but I am
- 29:57Speaker 5: getting more feedback that, Look, the Cubs are doing a
- 30:00Speaker 5: better job at least engaging on the top of the
- 30:03Speaker 5: market than they were.
- 30:05Speaker 1: In previous years.
- 30:05Speaker 4: They weren't.
- 30:06Speaker 5: They were just skipping that part of free agency outside
- 30:09Speaker 5: of like you know, being in and I'm using quotes
- 30:12Speaker 5: here uh on on Shoheo Tani which seemed like Fata
- 30:16Speaker 5: compley right that they just haven't been there since. Really
- 30:22Speaker 5: they signed Darvish and I guess, you know, I should
- 30:24Speaker 5: give them credit for getting Dancy Swanson, but that was
- 30:27Speaker 5: a crazy shortstop off season. So it's just they're they're
- 30:31Speaker 5: They're not the Mets, they're not the Yankees, they're not
- 30:33Speaker 5: the Dodgers.
- 30:34Speaker 4: The way they behave, I agree with AJ.
- 30:37Speaker 5: I'd love to see them behave in that manner, much
- 30:39Speaker 5: more fun, I think, yeah, But I think that you know,
- 30:42Speaker 5: they're at least making a little bit more noise and
- 30:45Speaker 5: a little more engaged than they had been in the
- 30:47Speaker 5: in previous winters.
- 30:49Speaker 7: What's are those three lines up in all the Cubs
- 30:53Speaker 7: ringam a row of well, we don't want too old,
- 30:56Speaker 7: we don't want some way, we want this, we don't
- 30:58Speaker 7: want to spend too much, not to long. So is
- 31:00Speaker 7: it Gallon am I? Or is it Michael King?
- 31:04Speaker 1: I think Michael King's a great fit.
- 31:07Speaker 5: Michael King is someone that I think fits in, would
- 31:11Speaker 5: would fit in with that clubhouse.
- 31:13Speaker 1: I think his.
- 31:13Speaker 5: Upside is that of pretty much you know, is he
- 31:17Speaker 5: is he an ace? I don't know if he could
- 31:19Speaker 5: say that just yet. He doesn't have the with his
- 31:21Speaker 5: injury history, I think that's the main concern. But I
- 31:24Speaker 5: think what he brings his upside, and they have a
- 31:27Speaker 5: plan to keep him healthy. I think that's something that's
- 31:30Speaker 5: really important. They believe they can. They have seen some
- 31:34Speaker 5: things with his delivery that have led to these injuries,
- 31:36Speaker 5: and they can kind of minimize that risk and kind
- 31:40Speaker 5: of get him to that point where he looked like
- 31:42Speaker 5: a one or two when he was at his best
- 31:44Speaker 5: with the Yankees and the and the Padres, and and
- 31:47Speaker 5: kind of keep that extended for more than half a
- 31:50Speaker 5: season or just one season. They could give him a
- 31:52Speaker 5: three or four year deal and hope for the majority
- 31:54Speaker 5: of that he's pitching at a really high level. I
- 31:56Speaker 5: think he's one of, like arguably the best fit. I
- 31:59Speaker 5: just don't know what exactly they think of him. I
- 32:02Speaker 5: I think an opinion across the league is split on
- 32:05Speaker 5: of my eye, but he has There are some people
- 32:07Speaker 5: you talk to and say, this guy has ace upside.
- 32:10Speaker 5: There are some people you talk to and they say,
- 32:12Speaker 5: I don't like the fastball and the breaking ball isn't
- 32:14Speaker 5: that impressive. I don't think it'll get major league hitters
- 32:18Speaker 5: out as consistently as other, you know, top of the
- 32:21Speaker 5: rotation guys, and I think that's nitpicking. And when you
- 32:24Speaker 5: get to nine figure deals. I think that's what front
- 32:27Speaker 5: offices do they nitpick, and I think, what do you
- 32:30Speaker 5: think he is?
- 32:30Speaker 4: Is he an ace? Or is he a three?
- 32:33Speaker 5: And that's where if the bidding gets to one twenty
- 32:36Speaker 5: one fifty for am I, then suddenly I think the
- 32:39Speaker 5: Cubs are asking a little more questions about him and
- 32:42Speaker 5: really digging in and saying, do we like the characteristics
- 32:45Speaker 5: of all these pitches? Clearly, clearly he's a high level pitcher,
- 32:49Speaker 5: and I think they they'd be getting an obvious rotation upgrade.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Do they want to spend that type of money.
- 32:55Speaker 5: That's why I think between those two that's where I
- 32:57Speaker 5: really look. It's it's am I or or or King,
- 33:01Speaker 5: And King's the guy that I go back to.
- 33:03Speaker 3: All and they said there was a question about Amanaga too,
- 33:05Speaker 3: and he's been okay. First year was good, and the
- 33:07Speaker 3: last year obviously first sure he was really good. Yeah,
- 33:10Speaker 3: I think the same questions were there for him. So
- 33:13Speaker 3: I don't know, it's all what you believe. No one
- 33:15Speaker 3: else really believed Demaga was gonna be great, and first
- 33:17Speaker 3: year he was unbelievable, So it's kind of like peger
- 33:19Speaker 3: tails and what do you mean? But my question is
- 33:22Speaker 3: position player. So Kyle Tucker's not coming back. They pretty
- 33:25Speaker 3: much said that you go on trade for him, You
- 33:26Speaker 3: make the trade with cam Smith and parades and all
- 33:29Speaker 3: that and make that move. But what's next for them?
- 33:32Speaker 3: Because you have Dans, We obviously have Nico. Yeah, you
- 33:35Speaker 3: have Bush at first right, you have a catcher, you
- 33:37Speaker 3: have the outfield pretty much set, probably Musa to right field,
- 33:42Speaker 3: say it back to rightfield. But so what do they
- 33:44Speaker 3: go and get? What do they need third base?
- 33:46Speaker 4: Yeah?
- 33:46Speaker 5: I think, I mean, but they have Shaw. They like
- 33:48Speaker 5: to improved the second half by Asteros. Is you know
- 33:51Speaker 5: he got I guess you could see the d Yeah.
- 33:54Speaker 5: I think you're gonna see a lot of him. I
- 33:56Speaker 5: think you're gonna see a lot of Casey. I don't
- 33:59Speaker 5: think they're gonna go out out and get other than Bregman,
- 34:02Speaker 5: who they are absolutely interested in.
- 34:03Speaker 4: I don't think they're desperate for offense.
- 34:07Speaker 5: I think they want to get their younger players more
- 34:09Speaker 5: regular playing time. I think they want to see Casey
- 34:11Speaker 5: out there. They they liked what they saw offered by
- 34:14Speaker 5: a Seros. I think they were a little bothered at
- 34:17Speaker 5: what's the you know, disappointed. I guess that Casey Casey
- 34:20Speaker 5: got hurt right before he was going to get a
- 34:22Speaker 5: ton of playing time. He got a concussion, and that
- 34:25Speaker 5: was I think that was something that they wanted to
- 34:27Speaker 5: see an extended run for him, see what he could
- 34:30Speaker 5: do with regular playing time. Bia Sarius got that regular
- 34:33Speaker 5: playing time, took off and was on the playoff roster.
- 34:35Speaker 5: He wasn't impactful in the playoffs because they had kind
- 34:38Speaker 5: of a set lineup and they weren't going to force
- 34:40Speaker 5: him into the lineup. But he he had he had
- 34:42Speaker 5: some in bats and he had impacted some games and
- 34:45Speaker 5: you kind of saw, oh, that's what this guy can do.
- 34:48Speaker 4: So guy, Yeah, I don't love the idea of this
- 34:51Speaker 4: prospects and go get what you need.
- 34:53Speaker 5: Yeah, I think I think that's an option. I do
- 34:55Speaker 5: think there are some trade candidates out there. There's a
- 34:57Speaker 5: lot of pitching available by a trade, and I think
- 35:00Speaker 5: they will listen and explore that. Mackenzie Gore, Edward Cabrera,
- 35:05Speaker 5: those are some names that I've heard that they were
- 35:07Speaker 5: certainly in on them at the deadline, and I think
- 35:09Speaker 5: they're gonna revisit that. I think the trade rumors kind
- 35:12Speaker 5: of slowed for a while. I heard that it's gonna
- 35:15Speaker 5: pick up this week. I think we're gonna hear some rumors.
- 35:17Speaker 5: I think we're gonna hear some things, and I expect
- 35:19Speaker 5: the Cubs to be involved in that, how aggressively.
- 35:22Speaker 4: Who they get That's.
- 35:24Speaker 5: That's I think the question that I don't have an
- 35:25Speaker 5: answer to yet, but they will. I'm almost sure they'll
- 35:28Speaker 5: engage again on the TRADEMARKT and those are two names
- 35:31Speaker 5: that I have heard.
- 35:33Speaker 7: The Shoa, the Shoda. Rumors that the Cubs actually didn't
- 35:37Speaker 7: want him to accept the qualifying offer.
- 35:40Speaker 4: Do you know?
- 35:40Speaker 7: Are they true or are they not true? I have
- 35:42Speaker 7: a hard time believing it. But you're more of the
- 35:45Speaker 7: you know more of the Cubs than we do.
- 35:47Speaker 5: I wouldn't say they didn't want him to accept it.
- 35:50Speaker 5: I think they were preparing for a situation where he
- 35:54Speaker 5: wouldn't accept it, and they had kind of gotten wrapped
- 35:58Speaker 5: their minds around that. Here is how we attacked the
- 36:01Speaker 5: offseason without showed him Managa. I know he had some
- 36:04Speaker 5: really bad outings and he didn't pitch Game five of
- 36:07Speaker 5: the NLDS at all, and that says a lot. I
- 36:10Speaker 5: just don't think they were happy with where he was.
- 36:12Speaker 5: They they weren't in a place where they could trust him.
- 36:15Speaker 5: And you listen to Greig Council talk about this guy,
- 36:16Speaker 5: especially when he was at his best. He absolutely has
- 36:19Speaker 5: a ton of faith in showed to him Anaga. It's
- 36:21Speaker 5: about getting him back to that spot. And I really
- 36:24Speaker 5: think the hamstring issue just threw him off his game.
- 36:27Speaker 5: His arm slot was off, his vela was down a
- 36:30Speaker 5: tick or two, and look, he's the type of guy
- 36:32Speaker 5: that isn't throwing ninety five plus, so that a ticker
- 36:35Speaker 5: two is gonna throw everything off because he's all about
- 36:38Speaker 5: command and we knew he was gonna have home run
- 36:41Speaker 5: issues and that I think the tick or two down
- 36:43Speaker 5: led to the home run issues being exacerbated, and it
- 36:47Speaker 5: just it was a real issue at the end of
- 36:49Speaker 5: the season, especially when they weren't solo home runs. You
- 36:53Speaker 5: could that. I believe it was Game two of the NLDS.
- 36:57Speaker 5: They jumped out to that three to nothing lead and
- 37:00Speaker 5: to have it just go away immediately and because of
- 37:03Speaker 5: home run issues by shadow Managa, I think that that
- 37:06Speaker 5: was a major issue and they're gonna work on it,
- 37:08Speaker 5: and that there's no doubt that they have the infrastructure
- 37:12Speaker 5: in place and that he has the work ethic to
- 37:14Speaker 5: get things right. So I don't think they're disappointed. I
- 37:17Speaker 5: think they It would be more that they weren't one
- 37:20Speaker 5: hundred percent sure that he'd accept it. They and they were,
- 37:23Speaker 5: and they were preparing for reality without without him, and
- 37:26Speaker 5: had kind of gotten to the point where they thought,
- 37:28Speaker 5: here's what we can do, here's how we can spend
- 37:31Speaker 5: that money. And now he's back and they're gonna work
- 37:33Speaker 5: with him, and I think they it's a it's a
- 37:35Speaker 5: good relationship, so he could thrive once again with the Cubs.
- 37:39Speaker 3: It's funny to me, though, span Matthew Boyd on the
- 37:41Speaker 3: other day and he pitched on short rest. Yeah, how
- 37:44Speaker 3: team like the Cubs And I listen, I know, uh
- 37:48Speaker 3: I just the ready uh rookie of your jeeves. Oh Horton,
- 37:53Speaker 3: Kate Horton. Kate Horton got hurt, so they were missing him.
- 37:56Speaker 3: But how do the Cubs not have enough depth to
- 37:58Speaker 3: not throw a guy on short rest after they only
- 38:01Speaker 3: played three games? And you know, they played three games
- 38:03Speaker 3: in the wild card, won him and then they have
- 38:05Speaker 3: to bring Matthew Boyd. But like they didn't have anyone else,
- 38:07Speaker 3: you know, I think there had to be someone they
- 38:09Speaker 3: could have.
- 38:09Speaker 5: You could make the argument, and the way he pitched
- 38:11Speaker 5: in the playoffs, Colin Ray, you could have absolutely made
- 38:15Speaker 5: that argument.
- 38:16Speaker 1: I think, you know, some people.
- 38:18Speaker 5: Would have said, Hey, add Javier Asad back to the roster,
- 38:21Speaker 5: the playoff roster, and have him start that game. I
- 38:25Speaker 5: think they consider those options and felt Matthew Boyd on
- 38:28Speaker 5: short rest was the best option. But I think this
- 38:32Speaker 5: goes to what their plan is this offseason. I think
- 38:34Speaker 5: they agree with you that they did not have a
- 38:36Speaker 5: pitching kid. Horton was awesome. I think he's on the press.
- 38:39Speaker 1: I mean, you know, I could talk about him for
- 38:41Speaker 1: a while.
- 38:41Speaker 5: I think he's on the press being like one of
- 38:43Speaker 5: the better pitchers in the game, like a j I.
- 38:46Speaker 5: You know I didn't cover you that. I think I
- 38:48Speaker 5: was in the clubhouse with you. Look maybe for a
- 38:50Speaker 5: season or two early on in my career, at the
- 38:53Speaker 5: end of your career. But my assumption is if you
- 38:56Speaker 5: worked with Kate Horton, you'd love him, dude. Yeah, and
- 38:59Speaker 5: he doesn't. You got to slow him down. Is the
- 39:02Speaker 5: type of like, he's a young guy, rookie and and
- 39:05Speaker 5: I thought he carried himself like a veteran.
- 39:07Speaker 3: So so, so here's my question. On Kate Horton. I
- 39:10Speaker 3: did his I did his debut. It was against the
- 39:12Speaker 3: Mass He didn't start, no, no, okay, which I still
- 39:16Speaker 3: cannot figure out. And we asked counsel this before the game.
- 39:20Speaker 3: He didn't want him his first big beginning to face Sodo,
- 39:23Speaker 3: Lindor and Alonso. Yeah, okay, the first time he faced
- 39:26Speaker 3: him though, they came up with the bases loaded, right,
- 39:29Speaker 3: So I just I just did they not know him
- 39:32Speaker 3: well enough? Because after watching him, I mean, this dude is.
- 39:35Speaker 5: I think they wanted a softer landing. Yeah, but in
- 39:37Speaker 5: New York, I agree, you know, like why not?
- 39:40Speaker 4: This is a guy that's used to Yeah, he's used
- 39:42Speaker 4: to it. May as well let him experience what he's
- 39:45Speaker 4: always going to.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Give up a run whoever he started that game is.
- 39:48Speaker 5: Yeah, he I think he proved himself and I think
- 39:51Speaker 5: he showed who he is over the course of that
- 39:55Speaker 5: this season and and there there's no doubt that they
- 39:57Speaker 5: would have loved to have him in the playoffs. But
- 39:59Speaker 5: you know, I think they saw that they were short.
- 40:02Speaker 5: After Justin Steele got hurt, after Kate Horton got hurt,
- 40:05Speaker 5: they said, we don't want to end up in this situation.
- 40:07Speaker 3: Horton, Steele, Imanaga Hooyd ty On, there's five. Oh yeah,
- 40:12Speaker 3: so who you adding yeah or kicking out?
- 40:13Speaker 4: No? Well, I think that Steele isn't going to be
- 40:17Speaker 4: ready till May. Okay. I think they could force him.
- 40:20Speaker 5: Back, but I think they saw what happened with the
- 40:22Speaker 5: Marlins and Sandy al Contra. I don't think I think
- 40:25Speaker 5: they rushed him back. You know, I don't think they
- 40:27Speaker 5: want to rush Steel back. And I also think they
- 40:29Speaker 5: just they they're they're kind of the mentality like, we'll
- 40:32Speaker 5: figure it out when when Steal's back. Maybe maybe someone
- 40:36Speaker 5: gets sent down, maybe someone gets pushed to the.
- 40:38Speaker 4: Bullpend, maybe they go with six for a while.
- 40:40Speaker 5: I think they're just completely of the mindset of we
- 40:44Speaker 5: don't want to end up where we were in the playoffs.
- 40:46Speaker 5: They washed the postseason, the way pitching is used, the
- 40:49Speaker 5: way it dominated the postseason at times, and they said,
- 40:53Speaker 5: we're short on pitching. We'll, well, we're willing to take
- 40:56Speaker 5: a step back in offense if that's what needs to happen.
- 40:59Speaker 5: If we can't phil Kyle Tucker's role and the young
- 41:02Speaker 5: guys don't step up and bring the carry the offense again,
- 41:06Speaker 5: they're willing to take a small step back on offense
- 41:09Speaker 5: if it means they have pitching and pitching depth and
- 41:12Speaker 5: can rely on that defense which is elite, and and.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Carry them through the first round of the playoffs.
- 41:19Speaker 5: I think they they really want to add a lot
- 41:21Speaker 5: of pitching, both bullpen and starting.
- 41:22Speaker 4: But starting, you have to I.
- 41:25Speaker 1: Got one more for you. It's business, ye, But it's
- 41:27Speaker 1: the kind of question I like to ask on a
- 41:29Speaker 1: show like this. Some of the fans in the chat
- 41:31Speaker 1: were pointing out how Crane Kennedy, who's Crane Kenny who's
- 41:34Speaker 1: the team president, was on some show recently explaining how
- 41:36Speaker 1: the finances work and blaming Texas for not spending and whatever.
- 41:39Speaker 1: Can you help explain any of that because that's new
- 41:42Speaker 1: to me and I'm seeing articles.
- 41:44Speaker 5: Yeah, it's it's constant. They're the and I think it's
- 41:48Speaker 5: all of baseball thing. And I do think the Cubs,
- 41:51Speaker 5: you know, I don't I don't have their books, so
- 41:54Speaker 5: I can't see every bit of it. They they think
- 41:58Speaker 5: that they're that they have to a little bit more than
- 42:00Speaker 5: any other team when it comes to the taxes and
- 42:03Speaker 5: everything going around in the neighborhood and all that stuff. Look,
- 42:06Speaker 5: it sounds like excuse makes making and it and the
- 42:09Speaker 5: amount of money that the Cubs make, I think it's
- 42:12Speaker 5: really hard for fans to accept that.
- 42:14Speaker 4: It's really hard for me to accept that.
- 42:16Speaker 1: Uh, they're saying they're getting taxed I mean paraphrasing here, right, Yeah,
- 42:19Speaker 1: but like they're saying they're getting tax more than other
- 42:21Speaker 1: teams because of this.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Yeah, because of the city and the deal that they
- 42:25Speaker 5: had to get the ballpark to where it is now
- 42:28Speaker 5: and all the you know, all the renovations and everything,
- 42:31Speaker 5: and that's and.
- 42:32Speaker 1: The renovations that they own around the park, own around
- 42:35Speaker 1: the park.
- 42:35Speaker 5: Well, so so they this is this is all the
- 42:39Speaker 5: like you know, how you can massage these things. That's
- 42:42Speaker 5: not technically the Cubs. That's a separate company. It's owned
- 42:45Speaker 5: by the same piece is.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Why baseball is going to have a problem this conversation.
- 42:48Speaker 5: Yeah, so so that that doesn't count when it comes
- 42:51Speaker 5: like all that stuff around the ballpark. They own it,
- 42:54Speaker 5: but it's a separate company. So that's not So that's
- 42:56Speaker 5: why they have books.
- 42:57Speaker 1: That are but this is I don't have.
- 43:00Speaker 4: They're not they're not they're not the same.
- 43:04Speaker 1: It's important. I'm not going to spend ten minutes on this.
- 43:06Speaker 1: But when people wonder, why won't players just take a
- 43:10Speaker 1: salary cap to just split the money. The money you're
- 43:13Speaker 1: talking about here is directly related to the team, but
- 43:16Speaker 1: it's not, so they don't actually split a pot. I'm
- 43:19Speaker 1: just explaining why it'll get so complicated, specifically with Baseball's
- 43:23Speaker 1: trying to say, here's one revenue number, there, let's split it.
- 43:27Speaker 1: Owners are ready do this. They will spend every day
- 43:29Speaker 1: of their life splitting off every single thing they can
- 43:32Speaker 1: so they can tell players they're not making that much
- 43:34Speaker 1: money when they own hotels, restaurants, all these things that
- 43:38Speaker 1: complete Yankees just.
- 43:40Speaker 5: Said, they're losing money, right or not making as much
- 43:42Speaker 5: as you're not. Yeah, yeah, so you know, they they massage,
- 43:47Speaker 5: they change.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Yeah, It's just it sounds awful, Like I know, sometimes
- 43:54Speaker 1: it sounds like a broken record, but it sounds awful.
- 43:56Speaker 1: It sounds like owning a team really sucks. Yeah.
- 43:58Speaker 4: There, I don't I don't think fans want share that,
- 44:00Speaker 4: and I think.
- 44:01Speaker 5: They Yeah, I mean, I don't think anybody buys that.
- 44:04Speaker 4: That's the problem.
- 44:05Speaker 5: It's like nobody wants to hear it and nobody believes it.
- 44:08Speaker 5: So the only way you're going to convince us is
- 44:11Speaker 5: to open the books and have someone that really understands
- 44:13Speaker 5: this stuff take a.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Look at it, which they never do. Yeah, so here's
- 44:17Speaker 1: my point. Okay, people know where I stand, but they
- 44:19Speaker 1: need to think about what they're saying publicly when I
- 44:22Speaker 1: say they owner president, Like, you need to think about that,
- 44:25Speaker 1: because every time that comes out usually people are.
- 44:27Speaker 4: Like, yeah, no, sorry, I don't think they build too
- 44:30Speaker 4: high on you.
- 44:30Speaker 5: They're just gonna spend what they spend, and that, like
- 44:32Speaker 5: you just kind of have to accept it.
- 44:34Speaker 1: So I try.
- 44:35Speaker 5: I agree with Like, whenever you guys are railing on
- 44:38Speaker 5: the Cubs spending more, I agree, Patrick and I have
- 44:41Speaker 5: written about it a lot, but sometimes I just have
- 44:43Speaker 5: to force myself to look through the lens of this
- 44:45Speaker 5: is where the Cub's reality is. This is what Jed
- 44:48Speaker 5: and Carter and the rest of the front office have
- 44:49Speaker 5: to work with. So that's how I have to like
- 44:51Speaker 5: look at it. But if fans want to complain or
- 44:54Speaker 5: people want to say like they should be spending more,
- 44:57Speaker 5: I'm never going to argue with that because I agree
- 44:59Speaker 5: they always should be spending more.
- 45:00Speaker 4: Why shouldn't they spend like the Mets and the Dodgers.
- 45:03Speaker 4: Just just blow it out.
- 45:04Speaker 1: Yeah, you just can't spend every article in every North
- 45:07Speaker 1: Side Territory episode talk about it.
- 45:08Speaker 3: Then get some money. They could give her to that
- 45:10Speaker 3: stupid song after they if they sold that thing, that is.
- 45:15Speaker 1: The only thing that will get to Hot in Trouble.
- 45:18Speaker 3: You say, I said a song. I know, I hate
- 45:20Speaker 3: that stupid song. I know it's for a good cause.
- 45:24Speaker 3: I know, but I mean I can't hate it.
- 45:25Speaker 4: You're allowed.
- 45:26Speaker 1: You're good to you. Thanksobbing the Bible see after the
- 45:29Speaker 1: show and all that. But also North Side Territory with
- 45:32Speaker 1: the Hot Eve and with Patrick Mooney. Plenty of episodes
- 45:35Speaker 1: for you. I mean there's multiple per week. So if
- 45:37Speaker 1: you want to hear more of this, you know where
- 45:39Speaker 1: to go. Thanks again, Thanks guys,
