- 0:26Today here on mystery archives, we explore this nightmarish
- 0:30tragedy and tell the untold story of Gore Orphanage.
- 1:02The year was Nineteen. Oh, two and a religious zealot
- 1:05named. Reverend Johan sprunjer decided
- 1:08to establish an orphanage on Gore Road and the Vermillion
- 1:12area. He and his wife katharina had
- 1:16moved to Ohio after their prior orphanage had burned down in
- 1:21Burn, Indiana. All those located on Gore Road,
- 1:26the actual name of the orphanage was Light Of Hope.
- 1:30Although, its name would not fit its future reputation.
- 1:36The new orphanage consisted of four sets of farm buildings
- 1:40covering a total of five hundred and forty three acres.
- 1:44A magnificent Greek style mansion house at abandoned on
- 1:48the property as well. And it to had a strange and
- 1:51tragic backstory originally built by a man named Joseph
- 1:56Swift in the 19th century. It housed elaborate Furnishings
- 2:01ornate, Woodwork and marble columns but happiness soon
- 2:06turned to tragedy when Swift's five-year-old daughter suddenly
- 2:09passed away. And within a matter of months is
- 2:1324 year old son, would also pass shortly after both of these
- 2:18terrible happenings, the Swift family Investments, began to dry
- 2:22up, forcing Joseph, to sell his once dream.
- 2:26Home to a man named Nicholas Wilbur, Who was a renowned
- 2:30spiritualist. Mysterious rituals and seances
- 2:34were said to have been conducted regularly in the secluded
- 2:38Mansion. Conjuring up the spirits of
- 2:42deceased children. The spirits were said to inhabit
- 2:45a particular room within the Mansion itself and that Wilbur's
- 2:49own children or psychic and could communicate with them on a
- 2:54regular basis. Tragedy would also be fall
- 2:58Wilbur as well for of his grandchildren would died at the
- 3:02Mansion during a diphtheria epidemic.
- 3:05The Mansion was then abandoned in 1901 roughly one year prior
- 3:10to sprunjer purchasing the land, sprung GE did not.
- 3:14However, try to use this Mansion as part of his orphanage, he
- 3:19decided to utilize it as part of a self-sustaining religious
- 3:22community. Instead, it housed a small
- 3:26chapel and a printing press proudly stamping Bibles and
- 3:30other religious. Sprinted there with wide of
- 3:33Hope. The orphanage grew to be quite
- 3:36large population. Wise housed over 100 children at
- 3:40any given time, boys lived in a farm called the Hughes Farm
- 3:45while the girls lived at the Howard Farm, but rumors of
- 3:49darkness and despair would begin to plug Light Of Hope.
- 3:53Orphans frequently ran away from the home often waiting through
- 3:57the Vermillion, River to escape and many children soon told
- 4:02horrific stories of abuse. Neglect and slave labor.
- 4:08They described their diet consisting of calves, lumps, hog
- 4:12heads and sick cattle if they were fed at all.
- 4:16Their food was also often cooked in the same pot.
- 4:19So that were used for boiling undergarments, and the
- 4:23allegations didn't stop here. They would go on to describe
- 4:27rat-infested quarters where the children lived and how the rats
- 4:31would Often by children, as they tried to sleep.
- 4:35The children also only had one tub per Farm to bathe in, and
- 4:39they can only bathe every two weeks and had to use the same
- 4:44water as the other children. Stronger would also apparently
- 4:49rent the children out to neighboring, Farms, as laborers
- 4:53for a price, it would beat the children with a thick leather
- 4:57strap. If any of them dared to step out
- 4:59of line illness was apparently only treated via prayer and the
- 5:06children didn't receive a proper education as they were meant to
- 5:11and 1909 a formal investigation was conducted by the state of
- 5:15Ohio. But because there were no laws
- 5:18on the books. At the time, they failed to be
- 5:20able to do anything about the situation.
- 5:24The sprung girs would ultimately admit to many of the allegations
- 5:28that were lobbied against them. The fate of Light Of Hope would
- 5:32soon come to fruition. However, Mr. Springer died.
- 5:36Just two years after the conclusion of the investigation,
- 5:40leading to the closure of the orphanage and 1916, after years
- 5:45of financial troubles, the children would be dispersed
- 5:50throughout the local community and or return to any relatives
- 5:54that would take them. But unlike the infamous Legend,
- 5:58there is actually no evidence of the orphanage burning down
- 6:01whatsoever. But there is an eerily similar
- 6:05event that happened about 40 miles away from where Light Of
- 6:09Hope is located. shortly before the orphanage investigation and
- 6:141908 a disaster took place and the town of Collinwood the
- 6:20school mysteriously, caught fire and caused the deaths of 176
- 6:25students and for adults. These poor souls either burned
- 6:30to death or were trampled in the ensuing chaos.
- 6:34According to Witnesses, the children attempted to exit the
- 6:38building through the main stairwell, but it was already
- 6:41blocked by flames. The majority then tried to make
- 6:45their way to the rear exit of the school but it was
- 6:48unfortunately locked crammed together.
- 6:52With little to no room to move the fire swept from hallway to
- 6:56hallway. Consuming all in his path.
- 7:00The cries of the children disturb desperate parents and
- 7:03onlookers who could do nothing to save them. after the tragedy,
- 7:08the school's janitor would be accused of setting the blaze,
- 7:12but was later, proven innocent He himself lost four children in
- 7:16the fire and was terribly burned, trying to rescue one.
- 7:21And for a time he was detained by the police and protective
- 7:24custody to keep the residents from lynching it.
- 7:29This terrible and very real event, is what more than likely
- 7:33inspired the Tall, Tales of Gore Orphanage, perhaps the details
- 7:38were mixed up or interwoven for one reason or another, it could
- 7:43be that after the fire many families from Collinwood moved
- 7:46away, many of them to wear Light Of Hope is located at the time.
- 7:52The fire itself brought an end to the town of Collinwood
- 7:55leading to its annexation into Cleveland just two years after
- 7:59the tragedy. Although Gore Orphanage are
- 8:03Light Of Hope also shared a dark past, it would also experience a
- 8:08fire, but one, much different than the legend after its
- 8:12abandonment. They quickly became a dwelling
- 8:14ground for teenagers and troublemakers the Swift Mansion
- 8:18soon. Became covered in graffiti and
- 8:21would be burned down in 1923 more than likely by the same
- 8:26culprits. This is what remains of the site
- 8:30today. And although there is no
- 8:32evidence of anyone passing away during the days of Light, Of
- 8:36Hope orphanage, there certainly is a dark past and multiple
- 8:40deaths that have taken place upon the land, the dark rituals
- 8:44and seances conducted within the Swift mansion in.
- 8:47And of itself could have conjured something into this
- 8:50world, that shouldn't be here. And since its abandonment, a lot
- 8:55of paranormal activity has been reported in or around the site
- 8:59apparitions. Disembodied voices, balls of
- 9:04light screams and ghostly hand prints are just some of the
- 9:09strange paranormal activity that has been reported on Gore
- 9:13Orphanage Road. And whatever the case may be,
- 9:17whether the stories are true or false, one can say with
- 9:21certainty, that given the dark events of the land that were
- 9:24aware of, it's not surprising that this Legend Continues to
- 9:28live on today. And that gor orphanage has
- 9:32earned its spot in history as Ohio's.
