- 0:33Hamster with a blunt pen knife for doing quicker quicker.
- 0:36Hello everybody and welcome back to a hamster with a blunt pen
- 0:40knife. I am Elliot and I am saddling up
- 0:45for another, well, the final instalment of the Gunfighters
- 0:49with my good friend and usual person who does this, Joe Ford.
- 0:54Saddling up, you say? Well.
- 0:57Sounds hopeful. We've done a story about Cowboys
- 0:59out in the in the OK Corral, lots of men in in chaps and
- 1:03tight trousers and I'm surprised that there's been a severe lack
- 1:06of innuendo. Innuendo.
- 1:08All right, so I'll make up for it.
- 1:09I shall turn this into an episode of RUP.
- 1:11And so, mind you, look, we've both got a bit of scruff around
- 1:14our faces. We would make pretty good
- 1:15Cowboys, don't you think? I mean, I'll be the minceest
- 1:18cowboy you've ever seen. Yeah, I mean, I, I, yeah,
- 1:21wouldn't be, wouldn't be strong enough to do any of it.
- 1:23But, you know, I'd like to wear a hat.
- 1:25I've been purposely growing my hair out for fun so I I feel
- 1:28like I've looked. I do look.
- 1:30Like hair right now, this is no good for anyone listening
- 1:32because they can't see you, right.
- 1:34But when I was, when I was a teenager, you know, sort of
- 1:38curtains were all in. Yeah.
- 1:40And I tried desperately, like, you've got a fabulous wave going
- 1:43on here, so hang curtains. Please don't let me insult.
- 1:46You. Oh no.
- 1:48Your hair is desperate. What?
- 1:50What is so badly when I was younger?
- 1:53It it all go back this into into yeah, a dissection of a
- 1:58dissection of my hair. So if you don't want to listen
- 1:59to politics, but. They're here for it.
- 2:03But it does now it is long enough where if I kind of
- 2:07basically I got really bored of, I've had the same haircut for
- 2:10about 10 years. And I do that by just waxing
- 2:14like literally creating a hard parting in my own hair.
- 2:17And then it falls like that naturally.
- 2:19Now I create in my own sort of the way my hair grows.
- 2:24But I, I always had, I always have it sort of short back
- 2:27inside, but I really like it when it's long and WAVY.
- 2:29So I purposely kind of mess it up now.
- 2:31So sometimes it does fall into curtains because I'll kind of
- 2:33comb it into the place. But then throughout the day I go
- 2:36run my hand through it and I it ends up sort of form of falling
- 2:38like this. And so it's it's a complete mess
- 2:41at the moment, but I really like it long so.
- 2:44Yeah, you like it long, do you? A hard parting, you say?
- 2:49I like a hard parting I did. Promise you I would.
- 2:51I mean, everything you say now is going to be an innuendo for
- 2:55the rest of the episode. Yeah, well, I dread to think
- 2:57what anywhere that you can make out of the phrase short backing
- 2:59sides. I mean, do you know what, right?
- 3:04Your hair looks so well, quaff, you're there.
- 3:08I mean, I will put you in for a shampoo advert because you're
- 3:10worth it. Oh, well, thank you.
- 3:13That's if anybody's listed. I'm, I'm available for voice
- 3:16work and now apparently for hair work as well.
- 3:17That's right. Absolutely, he's a man of many
- 3:20talents, although I suppose our talents today will be stretched.
- 3:26Give your bum the bum by forcing ourselves to endure.
- 3:30Sorry, Enjoy the gunfires Episode 4, which is called the
- 3:37Corral Horse. It's called the OK Corral.
- 3:40What else would it be called? Well, can I ask you, do you like
- 3:43seeing men sort of drawing their pistols and firing long
- 3:47distances? Oh absolutely.
- 3:50Like I said in episode 1, Episode 2, Swords and swords and
- 3:53guns, Swords and guns. Can I ask you, you know, like
- 3:56how far? How far can you fire your gun?
- 4:00If I if I try I was trying to think for funny.
- 4:04You're quite a young man, you know, so I hear that you can
- 4:08fire it quite far. Depends how well hydrated I am,
- 4:10but I don't know what, I don't know what it is.
- 4:13I keep having these dreams about Roman soldiers falling on me
- 4:16with their swords. You do.
- 4:18OK. Is that a line from the myth
- 4:20makers? It's filthy.
- 4:22It's filthy, yeah. And there's a line, isn't there
- 4:25about a bacanite at a first orgy?
- 4:28Yes, it's it's a dirty story. Is it?
- 4:31Is it, Is it Cassandra, who says in the myth makers, Yeah, about
- 4:34Roman soldiers falling on her with her sword?
- 4:36Say we don't. Listen to her.
- 4:38We don't need much help interpreting that one.
- 4:41She's right though, isn't she? She's right throughout that
- 4:43entire story. Yeah.
- 4:44Trust Vicki. Don't bring that horse in.
- 4:47But because she's such a an old ham.
- 4:50Well, there we go. Well, Are you ready to insert
- 4:55episode 4? I.
- 4:59You've never should have said that about innuendos.
- 5:03There we get. Yeah, we're filling.
- 5:04Up. Please tell me if you get
- 5:05uncomfortable at any point, all right?
- 5:07I'm just, I'm just not as good as you.
- 5:09So my, my, I'll keep trying to rebuff the way that it just
- 5:13makes me laugh more You. Can rebuff me any day.
- 5:17Good grief. I did that in the first episode,
- 5:19perhaps where I made I can't even remember.
- 5:20It wasn't even very good innuendo.
- 5:22And then I had to pause because I made myself laugh too much.
- 5:26You laughed at your own joke. Yeah, I have to do.
- 5:29That all the time for me. I was going to say, you know, if
- 5:32you've got to love yourself, isn't you?
- 5:34What self love are you talking about?
- 5:36Yeah, yeah. We better go to episode 4 quick.
- 5:42Wow. Whose turn is it to count in?
- 5:44I can't Remember Me, you, me. I think it's me because you
- 5:48start. I think it's you.
- 5:49That's right. You start us off.
- 5:51I'll finish us. Thank you. 321 off we go.
- 5:58My favorite, my favorite Bodden Alan Partridge.
- 6:02I love Alan Partridge. I love modern Alan Partridge
- 6:04especially. And he's talking about, I can't
- 6:06remember what it is, but a special lady in his life.
- 6:08And he says because I I wouldn't go so far as to say she
- 6:12completes me, but she certainly finishes me off.
- 6:18I love Alan Partridge. I think for anybody who likes
- 6:22Alan Partridge and has ears to listen most of the early stuff
- 6:26and even some of it now of coming on podcast is essentially
- 6:28me just slipping Alan Partridge references where I can for fun.
- 6:31And only about two people have ever noticed.
- 6:33So if you're really into Alan Partridge, go go and listen.
- 6:37Real stiff that corpses, good grief, have.
- 6:41You ever been? As stiff as that corpse.
- 6:45Only when I am trying to sort of do public speaking.
- 6:50Not because I find it sexy, but just because I clap up.
- 6:53I fucking hate public speaking. You know, when you you're in a
- 6:57ring and it's like a oh, a get to know you question, you have
- 7:00to stand up and oh man, I perspire and oh, it's just
- 7:03awful. If I can, if I can do, if I have
- 7:07lines, I can do it fine. You know, I performed, you know,
- 7:11shows and monologues and songs, everything I could do.
- 7:14They're absolutely fine. But if I don't know what I'm
- 7:16saying and I've got to speak, especially about myself now,
- 7:19forget it, forget it. I can't do it.
- 7:21I hate it. I mean, you've done quite well
- 7:23today on this podcast. Thanks.
- 7:26Well, you know, it's such a lovely, inviting.
- 7:31Oh, save it, all right. Oh, look who's this guy?
- 7:36Actually, do you know what? Right.
- 7:38Please, this man has just entered the scene.
- 7:40Now, I don't know who he is, but he's got a very impressive
- 7:43moustache. Is.
- 7:44It bat, someone said Bat. I don't know if that.
- 7:45Was is it Bat Masterson? Is that?
- 7:47Right. Oh yeah, of course, because yes,
- 7:49the yeah, Hartnell there takes I'm pretty being called Pop.
- 7:51Take a look down below, he is wearing the tightest trousers
- 7:55you've ever seen. I think the subtitles are
- 7:57covering the. Oh, this is where he touches the
- 8:00body. Look.
- 8:01Oh dear. I love jokes with with Hartwell
- 8:09about him having issues with how he's, you know, how he's
- 8:13addressed like him getting getting annoyed there about
- 8:16being called Pop. I love his when he first meets,
- 8:18when he first meets Stephen, isn't it?
- 8:19And he's like, yeah. And he's like, don't, yes, don't
- 8:22call me Doctor or no, don't call me Doc, isn't it?
- 8:24Yeah, don't call me Doc. And then he goes, yeah, whatever
- 8:27you say, Doc. And then he looks in with those
- 8:29eyes and then immediately tour. Doctor, really I've.
- 8:33Just realized something and please don't take a rude meaning
- 8:36of this. There are almost two generations
- 8:38between us. You could call me Pop, you know.
- 8:42Good grief. Yeah, I don't know because I'm.
- 8:4644 I mean, I would have actually been quite young.
- 8:49I was going to say because I've not asked, I've not asked you
- 8:51your age, but that's because, you know, I'm, I'm the one who
- 8:54gets asked like a step and everyone's like, you know, blow
- 8:57me out. How young are you?
- 8:58But it feels feels rude to do it the other way around.
- 9:00But I might start if everyone wants to question me about my
- 9:02age and whilst I go. Yeah, all right, but you have to
- 9:04tell me. About 27, aren't you?
- 9:06You're 27. I'm 44.
- 9:08Yeah, nice. I'll make a note of it.
- 9:09I'll have to ask everybody anytime I do it because it'll
- 9:11come up next time I do strictly, I'll get.
- 9:14I'll ask because I'm sure, but I'll ask if you're.
- 9:16In return, without Please tell me your age, it was Luke Malloy,
- 9:20who is just turned 30, that you are now officially the youngest
- 9:24contributor to a Habsur Blum pen knife.
- 9:26Well, but as you said to me, as you said to me the other day,
- 9:29you think that I'm 27 but with the spirit of a a middle-aged
- 9:34man. You've got a copy of the gun
- 9:36fighters target book, all right. Yeah.
- 9:38I don't know how many of the TikTok generation have that.
- 9:42I've got, I've got to compensate somehow, you know?
- 9:45Compensate for what? Well.
- 9:52Oh boy, oh boy. But that, that is the that's not
- 9:57what I'm not quite sure what I meant.
- 9:59I think I just bet I'm very proudly into the things that I'm
- 10:02into. And yeah, it's definitely got a
- 10:07Doctor Who mainly that's a nice straight.
- 10:10Space. Yeah, absolutely.
- 10:13That's how I've spent my entire life, you know?
- 10:17But I think there was a probably a version of me that would have
- 10:21been a bit ashamed by it, and now I just don't.
- 10:24I don't care. Oh, so you skipped all of that
- 10:28sort of borrowed embarrassment we all had in our, what, early
- 10:3320s? No, it was mostly my 20s
- 10:35actually, where I was like, oh, should, might be, should not
- 10:37have grown out of this by now. Then I hit my 30s and I was like
- 10:40oh fuck it. I think going to going going to
- 10:44art school gave me that like horribly annoying phase of being
- 10:47able to kind of be a bit pretentious and into art stuff
- 10:51and be like maternity. Yeah.
- 10:53Yeah, and then I've sort of and you know, don't get me wrong, I
- 10:56was still basically the same person at university, but you
- 10:59know, you get to you get to be a bit more pretentious about
- 11:01stuff. And now I currently have a side
- 11:02of it and I just say I like what I like.
- 11:05And also as well my life, you know, sorry this is all getting
- 11:09a bit. So this is your life.
- 11:12But you know, my for everyone who's I always think of Reeves
- 11:18and Mortimer with that and to get like a little a little sort
- 11:22of Glock and spit out and go this is your life.
- 11:28But yeah, you know, like. I've got work here by the
- 11:30episodes, you know. Well, I've got to I've got to
- 11:34demonstrate to people for again, I might be I might be 27, but
- 11:37yeah, I at least I know, I know my readable for my freeze of
- 11:40Mortimer. I'm not just.
- 11:43Did you hear that, you old folkies out there?
- 11:4527 All right, I know you guys can't remember bat bat far, but.
- 11:49I've not just all about maybe with TikTok dances and.
- 11:53TikTok dances? Really.
- 11:55Oh, the first, apparently what they do over there.
- 11:58Oh, OK, you'll never catch me. Down now you sound 44.
- 12:02Apparently that's what they do over there.
- 12:04Look proudly creative, but with two left feet, I was never.
- 12:07Very presence on your podcast. You should know all about this
- 12:09stuff. We do and I have an account
- 12:12mostly to see what we post and that is about it.
- 12:16But. I only see videos of kittens
- 12:19really. Yeah, To be fair, my, yeah, my,
- 12:23my feed is, is our podcast, Yeah.
- 12:25Or videos of cats doing stuff. And I'm pretty happy with that.
- 12:28Now you might be wondering why we've spent the last sort of 10
- 12:33minutes of the gunfighters flirting, making innuendo and
- 12:38talking about cat TikTok videos. And that's because not a lot
- 12:42happens in Episode 4 until the gunfight.
- 12:43It's just a lot of standing around.
- 12:46People talking about there's going to be a gunfight.
- 12:49We've got to get ready for a gunfight.
- 12:51A gunfight's coming. But.
- 12:53In the same breath, you've still got Hartnell touching the body,
- 12:56you know, you've got new characters coming.
- 12:58There is there is stuff happening, but there's there's
- 13:00no narrative happening. And you get Hartnell saying that
- 13:04he would never, he would never raise his gun in anger.
- 13:08Which again, I'm going to rail against people who talk about
- 13:12how there are later incarnations of the Doctors that just will
- 13:15kind of wield guns Willy nilly and they find all of the, the,
- 13:19they find all the stuff to be a bit overblown.
- 13:22But I think that the First Doctor should have set the
- 13:25template by saying that he would never raise, never raise a gun
- 13:28in violence and anger. Raising guns in anger Willy
- 13:32nilly. I mean, how many openings are
- 13:34you offering me here? Well, not as many as you used
- 13:37to. It's true.
- 13:41It's true. It is true.
- 13:44OK, but those. So that's it.
- 13:46We just sort of skip back from either sides.
- 13:48Now the doctors. There's a bit in the minute
- 13:50where the doctor is literally just sitting around the
- 13:51breakfast table with Dodo going well, my child, I don't suppose
- 13:54we're going to be able to stop this scum fight.
- 13:56Oh well. Oh well, let's go.
- 13:58Come on. But usually, like you look at, I
- 14:03look at the myth makers. So that's Donald Cotton's last
- 14:06one. And that last episode, it is
- 14:08packed full of story. I mean, almost too much because
- 14:12Stephen gets hurt, doesn't he? Obviously there's the the huge
- 14:15massacre Vicky leaves. Like there's so much going on in
- 14:19that episode 4 compared to this. Yeah, they're not.
- 14:24Again, I love, I love this sort of having fun with it.
- 14:26It's not big on it's character work.
- 14:28No, it's jokes. You know, we're not learning
- 14:32much about Stephen or Dodo. I mean, it's nice to spend more
- 14:35time with Dodo and she feels proper fleshed out in this one.
- 14:40It's a shame that. She just gets back.
- 14:44Oh no, we've just had this less we talk maker.
- 14:46Yeah. So is it net?
- 14:48Is it war machines? Next isn't.
- 14:49It. Oh, savages.
- 14:50Oh no, Savages next. Yeah.
- 14:51And then? Actually, she's pretty great in
- 14:53that as well. You know she goes off Explorer
- 14:55in the city. I really I really love the
- 14:58savages again took me to listen to the to the audio just got on
- 15:01its own for fun to be like wow I really like this.
- 15:04But I I think the savages is really special and doesn't get
- 15:07talked about enough. And I love those Teller snaps,
- 15:09especially the end of episode 4. Was it 3 when they rescued
- 15:12Hartnell from the city? And he looks absolutely fucked
- 15:14up. He is he's he's costumes toured
- 15:17and he looks like he's out of breath.
- 15:19It's brilliant. Well, you've got Frederick
- 15:20Yeager, isn't it? As Jaino doing the heart?
- 15:22No impression once he's been through the brain sucking
- 15:25machine. I am really, I'm really excited
- 15:28for the animation. They announced it.
- 15:30I don't I've seen the trailer. I'm not I'm not sold by how
- 15:35they've portrayed sort of the look of the savages.
- 15:37But it's such a weird story to do for the animation range that
- 15:40I'm really excited for it. I was.
- 15:42Offered a ticket to the BFI screening, but I just hate those
- 15:45group events. I just hate crowds, so I
- 15:49declined. Yeah.
- 15:51Oh my God, look at Dodo. Woo.
- 15:53Wait for the gun. I'm here.
- 15:57Oh my dear. I'm not in the slightest bit of
- 15:59danger. She's.
- 16:00Dressed like Annie Oakley in this story.
- 16:03I don't know how. I've really just got to realise,
- 16:05actually, you look for like Annie Oakley.
- 16:07I mean, I don't object too much to the plot slowing down because
- 16:13you've got Dodo, Doc Holiday and the doctor in this camp.
- 16:17You've got Johnny, Ringo and Stephen in the other camp.
- 16:20And so there's great. It's, forgive me, engorged with
- 16:24charm, this story. Yeah, and like I say, I know
- 16:27that they're not doing. They're not doing.
- 16:29Oh, sorry. It's a the dot collar.
- 16:31There's a real good, real good example for why some men should
- 16:35just keep wearing hats. Because he, he did.
- 16:37He looked all right of his hat on quite, you know, quite
- 16:40handsome in that distinguished way.
- 16:41They took his hat off. And that hairline is fighting
- 16:43for his life. Doesn't Hartle look great with a
- 16:46martial star on him as well? Again, that's what would be
- 16:49about that costume, just feeling so like natural for the time
- 16:52period that yeah, in that silhouette, he just looks like a
- 16:54cowboy character. He looks like Doctor Marshall
- 16:56with the hat and then that start act on.
- 16:59And he opens his mouth and goes and here's your wretched weapon,
- 17:02you know, take it back. I I do feel, though, like the
- 17:06expectation is that the doctor will be part of the like he will
- 17:10walk down the the Main Street at the end with the others and be a
- 17:15part of the action somehow. Not far gun but.
- 17:19Yeah, but it would be. Some some really clever, you
- 17:21know, like if you just fire up there for the power of
- 17:24mathematics, we can go bunk, bunk, bunk, bunk and knock them
- 17:27all out with a sign. Which is is what they do in Red
- 17:30Dwarf. That's where I took it from.
- 17:33Oh look, he's got his little glass of milk.
- 17:34Look, finally. Yeah, I love that he's into his.
- 17:41He's into his milk. Although actually sorry, you
- 17:43know, I'm sorry. I'm not going to pick tolls of
- 17:46the gunfire. But you were saying earlier
- 17:48about this is again to say, you know that your life is over.
- 17:53The in in the book they go, you know, explain that he doesn't
- 17:57have any aspirin on board. He's got machines for bones and
- 18:01everything. And that's why he goes and gets
- 18:02his tooth full. And again, I don't have a
- 18:04problem getting his tooth full because the story needs to
- 18:05happen. I'm not complaining.
- 18:07But of course, in the the Daleks, Barbara has a headache
- 18:11from the radiation. Susan does make her up a little
- 18:13cup of liquid, which goes here you are drink this get ready
- 18:16headache. And she has it.
- 18:16And straight away she's like, oh Blimey, that has helped.
- 18:18But I'd do. A Terran sticks and cover it
- 18:20with a line then and say that that was the full supply.
- 18:22I'm afraid that. Oh yes, Barbara's.
- 18:25Barbara's had it all. Selfish Barbara.
- 18:27Honestly, to be my dear, my dear child, we're just going to have
- 18:31to sit here and talk until the plot gets ready for the for the
- 18:35climax. It's we felt I was also like,
- 18:39again, you can't be a doctor fair about like being pedantic
- 18:43about things because I was trying to just like read some
- 18:45information about this and sort of see what people, other people
- 18:48were saying. And one of the bits of, of
- 18:51supposed trivia that I stumbled across was that it was the first
- 18:53time that Doctor Who had ever gone to the United States as a
- 18:56saying. And I was like, bullshit.
- 18:58They go to the top of the Empire State Building in the chains
- 19:02which so. A truly accurate representation
- 19:06of America there. Absolutely.
- 19:07A lone Texan man standing on top of the Empire State Building.
- 19:12Or that poor fella that's showing around the tour party.
- 19:14You know, the lady with the hat. Here we are on top of the the
- 19:18Empire State Building. It kind of reminds me of the IT
- 19:23reminds me of the tour guide for the For the Alamo from Pee Wee's
- 19:27Big Adventure. Actually, this is quite nice,
- 19:30Hartnell coming across to the other side and saying, you know,
- 19:35one, I'm taking Stephen with me and two, just call it off.
- 19:40You're all going to end up dead. And I think again, I'm, I'm not
- 19:46so squared up on it, but I, I think there was a lot of, there
- 19:52was a lot of attempts at diplomatic negotiation to stop
- 19:57the gunfight at the OK Corral, you know, because I think it's,
- 20:01it's one of those beautiful myths, isn't it?
- 20:03We have that everyone there, everyone wanders around with
- 20:05their, their pistols on their hips and so on, on a steals you
- 20:09drink in a bar and they get shot in the back of the head.
- 20:11But it was, you know, towns and settlements have gun.
- 20:15I mean, you can see in the there's that sign that says no
- 20:16shooting in the saloon in the story.
- 20:18You know, this was. A way to settle disputes.
- 20:21But it was the last resort. It was not quite as blood first
- 20:24as I think people like to. Mike was saying in the book that
- 20:29there was a law that you weren't allowed to carry a gun in a town
- 20:33at all. Well, I.
- 20:35Think we see so much stuff about Cowboys always outlaws, whereas
- 20:39the actual general day-to-day life is very, very boring.
- 20:43So do you reckon some of this is, you know, the fiction
- 20:47becomes myth, becomes fact? Yeah, I think it all ends up
- 20:51just kind of because I suppose it's also a really difficult
- 20:55time to. And again, it's why I say it's
- 20:57more like the myth makers than a pure historical because there's
- 21:01so much of this stuff is more passed down in in oral tradition
- 21:05or is, you know, written down by sort of, you know, third
- 21:08parties. This is all stuff that's told by
- 21:11other people who were there to people at campfires, to people
- 21:13in other settlements that's then kind of recorded as fact.
- 21:17And I don't think you ever, I think it's hard.
- 21:19It's kind of like pirates. It's really hard.
- 21:21I think to get a true representation on what actually
- 21:23life was was like. Because we like the romantic
- 21:27myth a hell of a lot more. Well, like in in all the movies,
- 21:31you know, you get lots of references to like showgirls,
- 21:35don't you? And things like that.
- 21:36In the theatre, it's bullshit. That's just them.
- 21:40They were prostitutes. The men went to these towns, to
- 21:43Fark. That's why you get Marco
- 21:45Lightley's House of Sin in the Book of the Gunfires, and he's
- 21:50very explicit as to why, what you know what the girls were
- 21:54about. But obviously in a movie, in a
- 21:56musical or something like that, they ain't going to show a lot
- 21:58of hookers hanging about the place.
- 22:00So they just dress them up as as showgirls.
- 22:02And we also get a lot of it from other media and other movies.
- 22:06I mean, the whole Stetson hat thing is all just, that's not
- 22:11accurate at all. You know, it was people.
- 22:14People wear hats because, yeah, people wear hats because of the
- 22:17sun. But, you know, you're talking
- 22:19Bola, Bola caps and more sort of things like that.
- 22:23But it just looks cool. And it was used in very famous
- 22:26cowboy movies that have become the template, I think the the
- 22:29original or one of the original film versions of Treasure Island
- 22:34as Long John Silver speaking with the very.
- 22:36Yeah, the West Country pirate accent that has now just become,
- 22:40that's your pirate voice. But it's just he was just doing
- 22:43a West Country accent for that movie and it's now.
- 22:46I think if you're doing a. Great.
- 22:48Parody of a Western, which is technically what this is, right?
- 22:51Yeah. Then just having all the
- 22:54cliches, factual accuracy be damned, is absolutely fine.
- 22:59It's actually kind of a shame they never did pirates because I
- 23:01would have quite liked to have seen there.
- 23:03No, you say more. Look at this camera, it's just
- 23:05lovely. And you get it, both sides.
- 23:08They're just, I feel like they're outside here.
- 23:11I know they're in a studio. No, but it does feel and that
- 23:14shot as well, like it's difficult to crane and everyone
- 23:17talks about is it the searches? I think we'll look it up because
- 23:20I'm wrong. Everyone talks.
- 23:20There's that really famous crane shot from the end of that
- 23:22Western, and I know that goes much higher than that, but you
- 23:25got to think it was probably only about 10 years before this
- 23:28and this is being made in ATV Studio.
- 23:30I can't quite understand that they were just firing their guns
- 23:34about 5 metres away from them and didn't hit them once and
- 23:38they were just continually walking towards them.
- 23:41I've no idea. There's probably there's
- 23:43probably a combination of, you know, action cliche, you know,
- 23:50taking liberties and then also probably something that had the
- 23:53handguns of being very reliable or accurate.
- 23:55But I'm not. Again, I'm not up enough on my
- 23:58Wild West history. I know Johnny Ringo is now
- 24:01holding a gun to Dodo's head, which means she's not entirely
- 24:05to blame when she gets away, but really, she's responsible for
- 24:08him dying because Doc Holiday isn't going to shoot him while
- 24:12she's there. She shoves him away and then he
- 24:14gets shot. He looks a bit like, only in
- 24:16those close-ups, he looks a bit like James Khan.
- 24:19But yeah, of course, he's got the Doc Holiday.
- 24:21He's got the little eringer. And in the book, right, he
- 24:25literally describes him as shooting Johnny Ringo where it
- 24:31would hurt the most. That's your imagination.
- 24:36Oh yeah, OK. But he dies screaming in pain.
- 24:40Lovely, I'm going to have to read it now.
- 24:42Oh. It's a really good book.
- 24:45Remind you the reading's great as well.
- 24:46Shane Rimmer's reading. He really sounds like an old
- 24:49time westerner. I have got the I also again, if
- 24:53I could have, I've been, I've been wanting to get like hooked
- 24:57up with a proper like VHS player.
- 25:01And yeah, so I know you can hook them up now to modern TV's with
- 25:05technology, but like a proper old CRTTV because I think you
- 25:08get that effect. They've got the gunfighters on
- 25:09video and I would have loved to have watched this on cassette.
- 25:12I think it adds to the atmosphere of it so much more,
- 25:15but I haven't got the money. Going back years and years now
- 25:18but fucking VHS isn't the tracking.
- 25:21You'd have white lines going because because they go all the
- 25:24way through. Oh my God.
- 25:26I'm very, I don't know, I was going to say fortunate.
- 25:29I suppose people wouldn't necessarily say fortunate or
- 25:31unfortunate either way, but I kind of grew up on the, you
- 25:34know, on the cusp of video and and DVD kind of both being a
- 25:40thing. But I had AI had a video player
- 25:42still for a really long time because they were cheap and easy
- 25:44to get a hold of. It was the best way for me to
- 25:47get a hold of movies because if I could buy a, you know, if I
- 25:49buy videos for less than a less than a pound because I don't
- 25:53want them anymore. And I had a video player, it was
- 25:55quite good. So I do still have a lot of
- 25:57nostalgia around for AHS, which again, probably also makes me
- 26:00sound much older, much older than I am.
- 26:05We're learning that you are the oldest soul to contribute to how
- 26:08I still now. I hate streaming and I love I
- 26:12love videos. This shot here, so it's from the
- 26:15top of the stairs of them shooting him.
- 26:18That's gorgeous. I just think as well the
- 26:20bloodbath is great, man. There's people dying left, right
- 26:23and centre here. And that's again, you know, this
- 26:26stunt work of having having fall off that railing is very
- 26:31impressive. The doctor goes now as we count.
- 26:34Oh well, everybody's dead. We may as well go.
- 26:37I would love to. I might get a hold of this on
- 26:39it's one of those stories, but I might get a hold of it on DVD
- 26:42just because, I mean, I don't think there's going to be a
- 26:45season 3 box fit for a long time, which I understand why,
- 26:51but I would love to this one of those stories.
- 26:53But now actually watching it, there's so much in the technical
- 26:56craft and this is so impressive. I would like to see, I'd like to
- 27:00just absorb as much information about how they actually managed
- 27:02to do half this shit. I.
- 27:05Was actually joking. He literally walked in going
- 27:08well all the Clantons are dead and he's dead.
- 27:10There we go. I love this little, this little
- 27:13like I don't know what he's like the livery or whatever that
- 27:15they've landed in. Very it's reminding me of, you
- 27:21know, Totters, Totters Lane, you know, the junkyard.
- 27:25It's it looks like that quite a lot actually.
- 27:28I love that ending for Doug Holiday as well.
- 27:30There is, mate. Rustled him up a wanted poster.
- 27:33Keep my reputation intact so they don't think I'm a good guy.
- 27:40Oh and Dodo, now she hears the singing, doesn't she?
- 27:44Do you know who sings the song with the Ballad of the Last
- 27:46Chance Saloon? I can't, I can't remember her
- 27:50name, but I don't know if the name is the name significant?
- 27:53Yes, because. You would have seen her in a new
- 27:56series episode, but probably not one you'd want to remember.
- 28:01She plays the lady who works in the shop in closing time who
- 28:07thinks that Matt Smith and James Corden are a gay couple.
- 28:10Of course, isn't she? Is she also this is this might
- 28:14be my my she also that character that that the actor is Linda
- 28:20Baron, isn't it? Isn't she also from Come Outside
- 28:23enough? It's I think she hosted Come
- 28:26Outside, which for me as a child, that's the informative
- 28:29kids TVI. Mean.
- 28:31I mostly remember her as Captain Rack in Enlightenment.
- 28:34The evil pirate woman. In Oh yeah of course see the
- 28:38only surviving the surviving footage of the sandwiches we've
- 28:41got there, which is always nice to see keep.
- 28:43Going fuck a duck. No, they're shovelling the
- 28:47shovelling the film into the furnace as we speak.
- 28:50It's why I always it's why if I always want, well, not everyone,
- 28:53I suppose, but why it'd be really nice to get it'd be nice
- 28:55to get all the stories back, but it'd be nice to get episode 1 of
- 28:58Celestia toy maker that has footage from the massacre and
- 29:03some other things like, well, it's got it's got a master plan
- 29:05footage in it, doesn't it as well?
- 29:07Because Stephen says, hey, look, there's me on Kemble.
- 29:09Do you know why? Earlier after we managed to
- 29:11successfully talk about almost every single William Hartnell
- 29:15story there. So we've hit our brief.
- 29:18And we actually talked about the gunfighters at the end.
- 29:21We did, We did. I thought you'd be quite
- 29:22surprised, actually. I think we managed to touch it
- 29:24at least 10 minutes per episode. There's at least 40 minutes of
- 29:27the gunfighters in there, more than the sensor rights.
- 29:33Before we depart, we need to elucidate our three fabulous
- 29:38reasons that we would recommend that whoever's listening to
- 29:41right now press stop, go straight to their shelf and puts
- 29:45the gunfighters on. If you go 1st and then I'll go
- 29:48next and then we'll go back and forth.
- 29:51OK, the first one for me, and it's the most obvious one, is
- 29:56the humor. I think it is dreadfully funny.
- 29:59I think sometimes I love, I love the science fiction stories, but
- 30:03I think sometimes they can just get a little bogged down in
- 30:06technicalities and science stuff.
- 30:08And you know, again, if you listen to the Season 5, we've
- 30:12got 2 Vargas and a Marga. They're so sometimes it all just
- 30:15gets a little bit planet BLOB from the whatever.
- 30:17And it's so refreshing to just have very, very witty scripting
- 30:23and also brilliant physical comedic acting.
- 30:27And it's it's nice, nice to be able to see.
- 30:29I think you should take the opportunity to be able to enjoy
- 30:31the fact that you can watch William Hartl doing very good
- 30:34physical comedy because one of the only surviving stories from
- 30:37this season. So that's going to be my reason.
- 30:40My first one that I've got a sort of segue from that to mine,
- 30:44which is William Hartnell himself.
- 30:46And something you said in episode 1 is that he's, you
- 30:49know, way more comfortable doing historicals and comedy, that he
- 30:54is doing sort of earnest science fiction or when he has to say a
- 30:57load of technobably gobbledygook.
- 31:01And he's just sublimely. I mean, we've pointed out quite
- 31:04a few times where he's made us laugh to, you know, holding them
- 31:07all up at the bar, putting his hand on the body, disgusting
- 31:11habits, you know, all of this, Mr. Werp, It just gives him
- 31:15countless opportunities to do what he does best, which is
- 31:18great comedy. So William Hartnell was my first
- 31:21thing. My second, and I think it's
- 31:24something actually that I'm going to have to thank Joe for,
- 31:29that is, is just the technical aspects of the story.
- 31:32I always watched it and I I have always enjoyed it and found it
- 31:34funny, and that's kind of why I liked it.
- 31:37But until really watching it, I hadn't actually quite taken into
- 31:40appreciation just how impressive everything is.
- 31:44I mean, I always knew that the set is the set is incredible.
- 31:48The ambition is insane. But yeah, the camera moves and
- 31:52the thing that the the way Rex Tucker directs the story is just
- 31:56sublime and so, so difficult to pull off and I think just makes
- 32:00it a joy to watch personally. My second thing then, in this
- 32:05madly experimental season is the song which no other Doctor Who
- 32:13story is narrated by. Technically terrible song, but
- 32:21it does tell the story, right? It really does.
- 32:23It does guide you through the story and it provides extra
- 32:27laughs during really dark moments.
- 32:29It's curtains for Charlie after he's just been shot dead.
- 32:34So I just, I just think, and that's something that really
- 32:37people point out and say This is why This is a Dog.
- 32:40Isn't that song. It doesn't grate on me, that
- 32:43song at all. I must say I never really found
- 32:45it. I don't know.
- 32:45I don't find it to be irritating.
- 32:47I don't, you know, sometimes it's a little inappropriate, but
- 32:51yeah, it doesn't never rub me the wrong way personally.
- 32:53Should you ever think that Linda Baron is not given a good
- 32:56attempt, may I please direct you all back to episode 1 where
- 33:00Elliot and I sung the song and that's what you could have had
- 33:03for 4 episodes, all right? Could have really hard not
- 33:06trying to do it actually. I'd like to hear that.
- 33:10I would like to hear that for me, the 3rd I'm going to be a
- 33:14bit cheeky here because there are a lot of things that I could
- 33:16espouse about why this is great, but I'm going to say look, it's
- 33:20three-part it's four parts. Sorry, it's four parts in a
- 33:24season that has, you know, a a brilliant 12 or 13 to predicate
- 33:30what you think you know, darling, master plan and in
- 33:32seasons to come, which we have sort of end the six past.
- 33:35Sometimes it's just nice to put on a really concise 4 four
- 33:38episode story. You're in and out.
- 33:40It's only a couple of hours and you can just watch it in an
- 33:43evening and have fun. And I have the attention span
- 33:46for longer parts, but sometimes it is just nice to you have to
- 33:51put it on and just enjoy it I think.
- 33:53You know, when we was enduring or one of those six parts in the
- 33:55Strictly Season 5. I mean, imagine if we'd had a
- 33:58couple of four parts in there, it would have been lovely.
- 34:00It would have been really, it would have been really nice.
- 34:02Yeah. I love the gunfire.
- 34:03Imagine the gunfires as the six parter.
- 34:06I I'm going to say something now that's going to really shock
- 34:10everybody, but my last reason is Dodo.
- 34:13OK. And just deal with it,
- 34:15everybody, because Jackie Lane does exactly what you want at
- 34:19the start of a comedy West. And she comes out and goes, my
- 34:21God, I'm in the Wild West. Yippee.
- 34:23You know, And she wants to hang out with Calamity Jane and Sam
- 34:27Bass. She's playing on the piano.
- 34:29She's abducted by Doc Holiday. She holds him hostage.
- 34:33She's involved with the the finale.
- 34:35She's responsible for Johnny Ringo's death.
- 34:39I mean, she's all over the story.
- 34:40And do you know, this is one of the very rare 60 stories where
- 34:46you can see photographs of the rehearsals?
- 34:49There's pictures in the rehearsal room of this one.
- 34:51And it feels like they're having the best time putting this
- 34:54together. And Jackie Lane looks like she's
- 34:56having the best time of everybody.
- 34:57So I know a lot of people don't rate dodo, but sometimes
- 35:01enthusiasm can get you a long way and in a comedy it gets you
- 35:05really far. So dodo.
- 35:09It's insanely my last reason. I think that can be sort of
- 35:15unspoken for sometimes when when we're going back and looking at
- 35:18them, especially in hindsight. And it's I know that it is being
- 35:21made for the audience, but I think their their schedules are
- 35:24so gruelling and so nightmarish to work through.
- 35:29And yeah, this is this is William Hartnell's third year
- 35:32going at it. And I think sometimes just for
- 35:34the cast, it's nice that they've got a four episode comedy set in
- 35:38the Wild West again. So that William Hartnell wanted
- 35:41to do, you know, it was kind of there to keep him sweet.
- 35:43And if Jackie Lane's enjoying herself and Peter Purves is
- 35:46enjoying himself and William Hartnell is enjoying himself, I
- 35:48think that comes across on the screen.
- 35:49And I'm just glad that they didn't have to sort of endure, I
- 35:52don't know, another 12 weeks of doing something like Master Plan
- 35:55I. Mean super rare to have a story
- 35:58in the 60s where someone doesn't have a week off.
- 36:01Yeah, everybody's there. Yeah, William Hartnell doesn't
- 36:04turn invisible halfway through the story.
- 36:07Well, we was going to talk about the Ark, wasn't we?
- 36:09You and I, as are into talking about the Hartnell era.
- 36:13I'm kind of pleased because he switched to the gunfire.
- 36:17I like the Ark a lot. Yeah, I love, I love the Ark,
- 36:20but I think it's one of those stories that it, it is quite,
- 36:26it's almost sort of typical 60s sci-fi Doctor Who.
- 36:30And it is very enjoyable and there's lots to talk about.
- 36:32But I feel like it's had a bit of a reappraise and some people
- 36:35really don't like it, but some people do like it.
- 36:37But you never hear anybody talk anything nice about the gunfires
- 36:39at all. So finding out that we both had
- 36:41a love of the gunfires to laugh away.
- 36:44Through it. Although, you know, we were
- 36:45talking about the earnest science fiction.
- 36:47There's nothing more earnest than that fella in the arc.
- 36:50Listen to him, my people. You know the one in episode 1?
- 36:53Oh man, he's terrible. I do and I, I I do love the I
- 36:57find the the monoids are adorable and ridiculous, and
- 37:00again, it's everything that I love in Doctor Who.
- 37:02If you can't quite. Long You know, you could maybe
- 37:04I'm quite a good We put a ping pong ball on your foreheads.
- 37:07Yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah.
- 37:12Take him to the security kitchen.
- 37:15Well look, before we go very quickly, will you please tell
- 37:19everybody once again where they can find you elsewhere and about
- 37:23your fabulous Co star as well? Yes, absolutely.
- 37:26So if you want to hear more of what I've got to say, you can
- 37:29find Come Along pond, the come along POM podcast on Spotify, on
- 37:35Apple, on Google, you know, a variety of other things with.
- 37:41Anywhere where you find your podcasts.
- 37:43Yeah, Amazon. So many, so, so many places with
- 37:48my wonderful Co host Dan, We talk about an episode of Dogs
- 37:52who every other week and we analyse it and we laugh about
- 37:57it, we reminisce about it and we also mostly talk about how gay
- 38:02is or isn't, because that tends to be our it's great fun.
- 38:09We we really like doing it. It's always just unfair.
- 38:11We don't take ourselves very seriously.
- 38:13So I think you'll enjoy it. You know, we, we probably
- 38:17recommend following our Instagram if you want to keep up
- 38:19with any of the information. It's just come on podcast.
- 38:22But if there's reasons why we're not uploading episodes or
- 38:24something's happening, you know, that's the main place you can go
- 38:27to. But we do also do a cinema
- 38:29podcast together, which everybody should listen to
- 38:30because have only just launched it, so we'd like more people to
- 38:34go over there. It's called Surfing Cinema and
- 38:38we just talk about any movie we feel like talking about in
- 38:41general. Use your movie podcast as
- 38:44springboard into actually finding new films, because I'm
- 38:48sure you'll be talking about films that I've never seen.
- 38:50We've just done. Let's see, we've we've done.
- 38:53Yeah, we did. We did the we did X Maxine and
- 38:58Pearl, and then we did Wicked and we did The Wizard of Oz.
- 39:03And we've done a thing about how people are absolute twats at the
- 39:06cinema bar these days. And probably in this, our most
- 39:10recent episode should be on Nosferatu.
- 39:14The most recent Nosferatu. So I mean.
- 39:16Of all of those, I've only seen two of them and then the two
- 39:19campus ones, Wicked and The Wizard of Oz.
- 39:21We like to, sometimes we do new releases, sometimes we do older
- 39:24things. Sometimes we just talk about
- 39:25what we want to, whatever we want to talk about.
- 39:27You know, it's the same kind of thing with with coming upon.
- 39:30We're not, we're not married anymore really to a, a linearity
- 39:35in a format. We just, you know, it's our
- 39:37podcast. We talk about what we want to
- 39:38talk about. We're not married to the
- 39:42linearity there speaks a true Doctor Who fan.
- 39:47It's a it's a better way of saying timey wimey, which I
- 39:49refuse to say for reasons. Please do refine when saying
- 39:53that. But, you know, you said at the
- 39:56start of that little biog there that for those people that want
- 40:00to hear more, well, I do want to hear more of you.
- 40:03And we've already got a path ahead of us.
- 40:07Please, will you tell everybody where we're going next so we can
- 40:10explore the entirety of the Second Doctor 0?
- 40:14Oh, absolutely. And I am.
- 40:18I'm just going to you. Forgot myself.
- 40:20Have you? Have you?
- 40:21I mean, well, do you want me to do?
- 40:22I can. I was going to say I was going
- 40:23to go through all of them, but do you want me to just say the
- 40:25Second Doctor's one or do you? Want me to say yeah, no, let's
- 40:27let's do it at the end of each one?
- 40:29OK, that's all right. That's all right.
- 40:30I know what one is. I know what one it is because
- 40:32it's the macroto. That's easy.
- 40:33OK, I thought I was going to go for all of them.
- 40:34I was like, hang on, let me just double check.
- 40:36That's the way. Well, this is gay.
- 40:39Yes. So next time, say as a as a, as
- 40:42a springboard to just really complained and talk about the
- 40:45Second Doctor's era, we're going to talk about the macro terror,
- 40:49a brilliant, brilliant story from again, powder dry, but
- 40:53Second Doctor's best season, which is season 4.
- 40:56Can you do the Harlem Fling? If I try hard enough.
- 41:00We were killed. Well, I do have Scottish lineage
- 41:04so I probably should at some .0. My God.
- 41:06Well then, everybody prepare yourselves for the TikTok
- 41:09footage that's now going to come out of the hump.
- 41:11No, I got no time for that. No, but if you're all lucky,
- 41:15maybe a bit of rough and tumble. You know what, I'm going to cut
- 41:21it there. Always good to run with an
- 41:22innuendo. Thank you very much for your
- 41:25time today. It's been an absolute.
- 41:27I mean, we've been going for four hours.
- 41:28It's been an absolute. Pleasure I had.
- 41:30I had great fun. Thank you.
- 41:32It's really good. Until we head to the unnamed
- 41:34colony of we haven't got a fucking clue what planet is on
- 41:38either, but there's going to be cheerleading and a lot of crabs.
