Transcript
- Lucas: Hey Luna, ready for another episode of Learn German with Fexingo? Luna: Absolutely, Lucas. I've been practicing my gym phrases, but I keep getting stuck on one thing. Lucas: Oh yeah? What's that? Luna: Asking for a towel. I mean, I know 'Handtuch' is towel, but I always mess up the sentence. Lucas: Ah, that's a classic. Let's nail it today. So the key phrase is: 'Ich brauche ein Handtuch.' That means 'I need a towel.' Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Okay, I think I got it. Lucas: Good. Now, if you want to ask where the towels are, you say: 'Wo sind die Handtücher?' The plural of Handtuch is Handtücher. Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Right, so that's asking 'Where are the towels?' Lucas: Exactly. And if you need to ask someone directly, you can say: 'Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich?' — 'Do you have a towel for me?' Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? That's polite. I like that. Lucas: Yeah, it's formal. Now, if someone tells you where the towels are, they might say: 'Die Handtücher sind dort.' — 'The towels are over there.' Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. So 'dort' means 'over there'. Lucas: Yep. And one more: 'Kann ich ein Handtuch haben?' — 'Can I have a towel?' Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? That's straightforward. So which one would I use first? Lucas: I'd start with 'Ich brauche ein Handtuch.' Then if you don't see them, ask 'Wo sind die Handtücher?' Luna: Okay, let me try a mini-scene. I walk up to the front desk and say: 'Ich brauche ein Handtuch.' Then they point and say: 'Die Handtücher sind dort.' Lucas: Perfect. You've got it. And if they're out, they might say 'Tut mir leid, wir haben keine Handtücher mehr.' But that's for another day. Luna: Oh, that's sad. But good to know. Lucas: So let's practice all five phrases once more. Repeat after me: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Luna: Ich brauche ein Handtuch. Lucas: Wo sind die Handtücher? Luna: Wo sind die Handtücher? Lucas: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? Lucas: Die Handtücher sind dort. Luna: Die Handtücher sind dort. Lucas: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Luna: Kann ich ein Handtuch haben? Lucas: Great. Now you're ready for the gym. And if you find these episodes useful, you know what keeps them ad-free? Listener support. If you'd like to help, you can buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Yeah, it's a nice way to say thanks and keep the podcast going. Lucas: Exactly. So, back to towels. Imagine you're at the gym and you forgot your towel. You go to the front desk and say: 'Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich?' Luna: Haben Sie ein Handtuch für mich? And they say: 'Ja, hier bitte.' Lucas: Perfect. And you reply: 'Danke schön!' Alright, that's all for today. Keep practicing, and we'll see you next time. Luna: Tschüss, Lucas!
