Latest / Early Edition with Ryan Bridge / Ryan Bridge: Another example of bureaucracy undermining government policy
Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: You've got to ask yourself who's running the show. Another
- 0:03Speaker 1: example of bureaucracy seemingly undermining the government on its cost
- 0:08Speaker 1: cutting plan, which remember from the start, from the outset,
- 0:11Speaker 1: they said, no frontline job's going latest thing. You've got
- 0:15Speaker 1: a Health New Zealand manager who did a PowerPoint to
- 0:18Speaker 1: ninety staff about upcoming changes. They indicated that jobs could
- 0:22Speaker 1: be cut, including get this, four hundred and seventy doctors
- 0:26Speaker 1: and fourteen hundred nurses. What who on earth thought that
- 0:31Speaker 1: was okay? Did they do it on purpose? Is it
- 0:33Speaker 1: a middle finger to the government and to the commissioner
- 0:36Speaker 1: Lesta Levy? The truth is we don't really know at
- 0:38Speaker 1: this point, Levy says, and he's quoted a newsroom is saying,
- 0:42Speaker 1: is this reluctance, is this resistance or is this sabotage?
- 0:49Speaker 1: Fair question? He's promising consequences. It's totally unacceptable. But it's
- 0:54Speaker 1: not an isolated incident. Ordering a Tamadiki is another agency
- 0:57Speaker 1: cutting funding left front and center to services. I think
- 1:00Speaker 1: many keywis would consider frontline like counseling. The stories get
- 1:04Speaker 1: in the press and then there's a back down, and
- 1:07Speaker 1: we've had public service leaking against the government. Loads of examples,
- 1:12Speaker 1: at least six major leaks that I could recall. There
- 1:16Speaker 1: was that Cabinet paper on the Foreign Housing investors, the
- 1:19Speaker 1: Treaty Principles Bill, stuff that has been leaked. You can't
- 1:23Speaker 1: know for sure the motivations in each case, but it
- 1:26Speaker 1: doesn't take a rocket scientist to work out that there
- 1:29Speaker 1: is huge resistance to the Coalition government's agenda within parts
- 1:34Speaker 1: of pockets of the bureaucracy. They need raining in. The
- 1:38Speaker 1: examples here need to be set, I think, and if
- 1:41Speaker 1: the message falls on deaf as well, maybe they need
- 1:45Speaker 1: to be marched out the door. For more from news
