- 0:40we have a we have a couple
- 0:41special guests and a
- 0:42special topic because today
- 0:45is all around first
- 0:46responders and nine eleven
- 0:48and a program that started
- 0:50here in ohio um and has
- 0:52grown exponentially in a
- 0:53short amount of time uh
- 0:55called the climb and so I
- 0:58have matt shingledecker
- 1:00And Kristen Sleeper with me?
- 1:03Did I get that right?
- 1:04Okay.
- 1:05You did.
- 1:06And Kristen is the Director
- 1:08of Law Enforcement
- 1:09Initiatives here in the state of Ohio.
- 1:12And Matt Shingledecker,
- 1:13if you don't know him,
- 1:15longstanding OG CrossFitter
- 1:18and is doing amazing things
- 1:20with his affiliate,
- 1:24helping people in all aspects of life,
- 1:27make a better life using
- 1:29crossfit as that model so
- 1:31with these welcome first of
- 1:33all welcome to both of you
- 1:34thank you brother
- 1:36So, Matt,
- 1:38I've known Matt since twenty
- 1:40fourteen Cincinnati
- 1:42regionals when we were
- 1:44volunteering together at
- 1:46the at the regional level of CrossFit,
- 1:48the sport.
- 1:50And we got put on the same
- 1:51team back then and and been
- 1:54friends ever since.
- 1:56And it's been an awesome experience.
- 1:58And I got to know Kristen
- 1:59just five minutes ago.
- 2:04So I want to dive into the climb.
- 2:07This started a year ago,
- 2:10and it started because you
- 2:11had relationships already
- 2:13because some other
- 2:14initiatives you had started.
- 2:15So Matt, walk us through that.
- 2:17Yeah, so we,
- 2:20myself and my business partner,
- 2:22Debbie Wagner, we co-own CrossFit,
- 2:25this nice little gym behind us here.
- 2:28We started working,
- 2:30we've been working with the state for,
- 2:33The better part of seven
- 2:34years in working with
- 2:36juveniles in the juvenile system,
- 2:40using CrossFit for that rehabilitation.
- 2:42Right.
- 2:42And that has put us in
- 2:45contact with a lot of
- 2:47pretty important people.
- 2:48One of those being Director Andy Wilson.
- 2:50So Andy is the director of
- 2:52public safety prior to that.
- 2:55He was director of law for
- 2:57Governor DeWine.
- 2:58And he came alongside of us to say,
- 3:00you know, hey,
- 3:01this juvenile program that
- 3:02you've got is pretty successful.
- 3:04How do we learn more about that?
- 3:06And how do we spread that
- 3:07throughout the state of Ohio?
- 3:09We've got eighty eight
- 3:10counties and we've got one
- 3:12program that's keeping
- 3:13recidivism rates in the
- 3:14twenty percent range or
- 3:16twenty three percent range,
- 3:17which is one of the lowest
- 3:18ranges across the nation.
- 3:19How do we expand that?
- 3:21So that took us on a journey.
- 3:23to start working with more
- 3:24people inside of the state to say, okay,
- 3:26here's a program that is
- 3:28both mental and physical
- 3:31tied together that, that creates success.
- 3:34And whether it's CrossFit or any type of,
- 3:37I would say any type of
- 3:38organized functional
- 3:40movement that's coach led is,
- 3:43is really the perfect
- 3:45mixture of what makes success.
- 3:47It doesn't necessarily have
- 3:48to be in a CrossFit gym,
- 3:50Um,
- 3:51we use that model because it's
- 3:52successful for us,
- 3:54but as long as it's coach
- 3:55led and it's community
- 3:56surrounded or community developed,
- 3:58that's where the success comes from.
- 4:00So we, um,
- 4:02started working with Andy in the
- 4:06state highway patrol.
- 4:07So two years ago, uh,
- 4:10almost three years ago now,
- 4:12Andy wanted to do Murph
- 4:14with the state highway patrol cadets.
- 4:17Um, so Andy's a CrossFitter, um,
- 4:21knew it well.
- 4:22Hey,
- 4:22how do we get the cadets ready to do
- 4:26full blown Merc?
- 4:27So he and I and Debbie worked together on,
- 4:30we'd go to the Academy
- 4:32every Friday morning for
- 4:33about two months and train
- 4:35these cadets on how to do Merc.
- 4:37We did that first year and
- 4:39it was a huge success.
- 4:40We partnered with Rogue.
- 4:41We had it at the Rogue facility.
- 4:43Um, it went over really, really well.
- 4:46Um, from that standpoint, um, Andy's like,
- 4:49okay,
- 4:50How do we grow this?
- 4:51How do we really involve the
- 4:54heart of this state when it
- 4:57comes to our first responders?
- 5:00How do we involve everyone?
- 5:01And we were sitting at a
- 5:03table at the police academy
- 5:06or there at the Ohio State
- 5:07Patrol Academy.
- 5:09And Debbie was like, well,
- 5:10why don't we do something
- 5:11around nine eleven?
- 5:12Perfect.
- 5:13Right.
- 5:13There are four hundred and
- 5:15twelve first responders
- 5:16that passed during nine eleven.
- 5:18And how do we.
- 5:19Honor those that have fallen.
- 5:22Also pay tribute to and
- 5:25respect those that are are
- 5:26in the field today.
- 5:28Well, let's come together on nine eleven.
- 5:30Pretty important.
- 5:31A lot of CrossFit people
- 5:33already do a memorial
- 5:34workout in that time.
- 5:36Why don't we try to
- 5:37collectively create
- 5:39something that all first
- 5:41responders can do,
- 5:42regardless of your skill or
- 5:43ability or your location?
- 5:45So the nine eleven climb was created.
- 5:48We worked a little bit with
- 5:50Rich Froning on creating
- 5:52the actual workout.
- 5:55And that first year, Kristen,
- 5:57what did we have, like a week?
- 6:00Last year,
- 6:01because it was one of those things like,
- 6:02hey, this is a great idea.
- 6:05And if anyone knows Director Wilson well,
- 6:08he's all in.
- 6:09And once it's on,
- 6:10just get out of the way
- 6:11because it's going to make it happen.
- 6:12So we kind of threw this
- 6:13together last year in a
- 6:15very short amount of time.
- 6:17This year,
- 6:17we've had quite a bit more lead up to it.
- 6:21And we're trying to make it bigger than,
- 6:23you know, bigger next year,
- 6:24even than what it is this year.
- 6:26I'll let Tristan jump in on
- 6:28kind of the state side of
- 6:29what this event means for
- 6:33first responders and maybe
- 6:34what Tristan can explain a
- 6:36little bit about, you know,
- 6:37her job and what her
- 6:38responsibilities are.
- 6:39But that's kind of the start
- 6:41of what we have today.
- 6:44Yeah,
- 6:44so as the Director of Law Enforcement
- 6:46Initiatives,
- 6:47I have a bunch of different
- 6:49programs under me.
- 6:50But as Matt said,
- 6:52Director Wilson and
- 6:53Governor DeWine both are
- 6:55very intent on helping
- 6:57first responders in any way
- 6:58and public safety in general.
- 7:00So I have both law enforcement recruitment
- 7:02and first responder wellness.
- 7:04The Office of First
- 7:05Responder Wellness started
- 7:07a few years ago and the
- 7:08focus has largely been the
- 7:10mental health side, which as you know,
- 7:13is very important to
- 7:14address and to get at that
- 7:17stigma and to get people
- 7:18talking and to help with
- 7:20the resources that we can.
- 7:22We are moving into more now
- 7:25the physical wellness and
- 7:27physical health side.
- 7:29and trying to pair physical
- 7:31and mental wellness
- 7:32together because we're
- 7:33trying to really address
- 7:34whole person health.
- 7:35And when you think about first responders,
- 7:37they are the people that
- 7:38are helping other people all the time.
- 7:41And who's taking care of
- 7:42them really is kind of the
- 7:44focus of my office.
- 7:45And in partnerships with
- 7:47Matt and Debbie and others,
- 7:49we're trying to find ways
- 7:51to bring resources to first
- 7:52responders in the state.
- 7:55So the nine-eleven climb, I'll be honest,
- 7:57my first week that I worked
- 8:00for the Department of
- 8:01Public Safety was the week of the MRF.
- 8:04And luckily,
- 8:04Director Wilson had asked me a
- 8:05few weeks in advance if I
- 8:07wanted to participate.
- 8:08So I got a little bit of
- 8:09prep time because I'm not a CrossFitter.
- 8:11I'm actually a runner.
- 8:13um so I prepped for that and
- 8:15kind of saw the energy
- 8:17around that and just the
- 8:18camaraderie and the
- 8:19teamwork that went into it
- 8:21and then we started talking
- 8:22about the nine eleven event
- 8:24um and last year we did and
- 8:25matt's right we kept it
- 8:27very fairly small we kept
- 8:28it to the cadets and the
- 8:29academy staff for the
- 8:30highway patrol um and then
- 8:32a few others and then it was kind of
- 8:34once we were done with it,
- 8:35it was this was a great success.
- 8:37What can we do now?
- 8:38And how can we make this bigger?
- 8:40And Director Wilson, of course,
- 8:42is always challenging us like,
- 8:43like Matt said,
- 8:44so throwing throwing audibles, curveballs,
- 8:48all those things.
- 8:48But this year,
- 8:50we turned our focus a little bit more to
- 8:55How we can incorporate
- 8:55people both in the in-person event, also,
- 8:58of course,
- 8:59the CrossFit affiliates or any
- 9:01gym or any first responder
- 9:03place of business.
- 9:04So a post or the firehouse or whatever,
- 9:07or even people doing it at
- 9:09their house with their family.
- 9:11One of the things that we
- 9:12know is that sometimes
- 9:14people can be a little bit
- 9:15hesitant about doing CrossFit.
- 9:17And so one of the pushes
- 9:18that I made this year was
- 9:20to try to incorporate more
- 9:21than just CrossFit.
- 9:22So we're gonna have people that can walk,
- 9:24that can climb stairs,
- 9:26we're gonna do yoga.
- 9:27We're really trying to make,
- 9:29trying to address whole person health.
- 9:31And, you know,
- 9:32of course the mental side
- 9:33and the physical side, and we just,
- 9:35you know, the director said the other day,
- 9:37he wants people to come and
- 9:38stand shoulder to shoulder,
- 9:39And do this and, you know,
- 9:41forty one minutes and
- 9:42twenty seconds dedicated to
- 9:43those four hundred and
- 9:44twelve first responders
- 9:45that lost their lives.
- 9:48That's right.
- 9:49That's incredible.
- 9:51You said that when you first
- 9:53started this job that you
- 9:55weren't a CrossFitter,
- 9:56but I look behind you.
- 9:58I see barbells.
- 9:59I see plates on the wall.
- 10:01Are you in a garage gym now?
- 10:03I'm actually in my home gym
- 10:06um and my husband so when
- 10:08covid hit um my husband
- 10:11started buying all the
- 10:13things from rogue and ref
- 10:15and and all of those and
- 10:16and every every time like
- 10:17every couple months now
- 10:19he's like I have this new
- 10:19piece of equipment that I
- 10:20want to buy and it's just
- 10:22okay go ahead but yeah we
- 10:23have a pretty nice setup in
- 10:25our basement um still not a
- 10:27crossfitter but I give it a
- 10:29try every now and then yeah
- 10:31why the poster
- 10:33Oh,
- 10:33the poster that actually was a poster
- 10:37in the movie theater in
- 10:39where my husband grew up.
- 10:41I don't know.
- 10:41I don't know if he was in
- 10:42high school or whatever.
- 10:44And he told his mom that he
- 10:46really wanted the poster.
- 10:48And she was,
- 10:50my mother-in-law's just a
- 10:51gracious human being.
- 10:52She went back to the movie
- 10:53theater and said,
- 10:54how much can I buy that for?
- 10:55And I think they charged her like,
- 10:56thirty bucks or something like that.
- 10:58But that's kind of the focal point.
- 11:00I love it.
- 11:01And of course, you know,
- 11:02support law enforcement, right,
- 11:03with bad boys.
- 11:06So, Matt,
- 11:06what are the chances we get her
- 11:08to be a full CrossFitter as
- 11:10these years go on?
- 11:11Well, so, you know, if you see the barbell,
- 11:14she's already doing
- 11:15CrossFit style workouts,
- 11:17whether she calls it CrossFit.
- 11:20The challenge is, and I think,
- 11:22I'm not sure,
- 11:23I'm going to put her on the spot.
- 11:24She keeps asking me when we
- 11:26go for Wednesday to do the event.
- 11:29So there is a live portion of this event.
- 11:31Um, that, uh, that is an invite portion.
- 11:33So when we go there,
- 11:34I typically do myself and several others,
- 11:37Debbie and Dale King.
- 11:38And we'll talk about that in a minute.
- 11:39Um,
- 11:39we'll do the event at six AM and then
- 11:42everyone will come and kick off there.
- 11:44The, the, uh, old crew stadium at eight.
- 11:47And I think.
- 11:49Tristan is going to join us
- 11:51for that CrossFit workout at six.
- 11:53I'm not sure yet.
- 11:53I'm not putting her on the spot.
- 11:55Look, I will join you.
- 11:56I am the mother of three kids.
- 11:59So every day I have to
- 12:00schedule out what time I
- 12:01have to be where and whatever.
- 12:03And so I've already in my
- 12:04head and I've already told my husband,
- 12:06I got to leave here by five
- 12:07thirty on Wednesday morning.
- 12:09Right.
- 12:11I'll be there, Matt.
- 12:13Scott, she will be a CrossFitter for that.
- 12:16That's the beauty of CrossFit, right?
- 12:18It's infinitely scalable.
- 12:19That's right.
- 12:20It doesn't matter if you're
- 12:21the mother of three kids or twelve kids.
- 12:23You can CrossFit just like the rest of us.
- 12:26Yeah.
- 12:27You know, so anyway, so...
- 12:29So first you talk about Rich
- 12:31programming this for you.
- 12:33Is this year the same
- 12:34workout as it was last year?
- 12:37And how easy was it to get
- 12:38Rich to write this workout?
- 12:40Took about fifteen minutes.
- 12:43So through, yes, this is the same workout.
- 12:46As a part of the Expanding
- 12:48Horizons Juvenile Probation
- 12:49Program and our trauma training,
- 12:52we've partnered with Mayhem
- 12:55several years ago.
- 12:56And how do we grow that program?
- 12:59How do we get the word out?
- 13:00How do we get the message out?
- 13:01You know, for us, it's a, it's a,
- 13:03it's a God led heartfelt
- 13:05mission and who better in
- 13:07this world to partner with
- 13:09than Rich and Jake Lockhart
- 13:11and Jimmy Hensel and that whole team.
- 13:13So we were down there
- 13:15actually for a meeting with
- 13:17Rich and Jake and that whole group.
- 13:20When this thing dropped, you know,
- 13:22a year ago and, you know,
- 13:24director Wilson's like, Hey Debbie,
- 13:25great idea.
- 13:26Thumbs up.
- 13:26Let's do the nine, a lot of them event.
- 13:27We're like,
- 13:28Oh, my God.
- 13:29OK, now we got to come up with a workout.
- 13:32So we literally asked, you know,
- 13:34Froning and Rich is like, yeah,
- 13:35give me fifteen minutes.
- 13:38They came back and he's like, here you go.
- 13:39Here's the movie.
- 13:40Here's the movements.
- 13:41Here's the scaling.
- 13:41Here's everything like, OK,
- 13:43that's perfect.
- 13:44And, you know, like Kristen said,
- 13:46I think it's great that this year.
- 13:49as she said, is expanding.
- 13:50We want to involve as many
- 13:52people as possible.
- 13:53So yes,
- 13:54you can come and do the functional
- 13:55movements.
- 13:56You can come in and do the
- 13:57CrossFit workout or call it
- 13:59functional fitness,
- 13:59whatever you want to call it.
- 14:01Or you can walk or you can do yoga.
- 14:03The goal of there,
- 14:04the goal really is you're
- 14:05there with others.
- 14:07If you think about what she said with Andy,
- 14:10community that surrounds
- 14:11these people is the most important thing.
- 14:14Without community, we have nothing.
- 14:16We can never do anything on our own.
- 14:17And
- 14:18what we find in,
- 14:20in whole health and
- 14:21wellness is especially in
- 14:22the first responder,
- 14:24brother and sisterhood is
- 14:25there's a lot of isolation,
- 14:27too much isolation,
- 14:28especially coming out of COVID.
- 14:30And the goal is to break
- 14:31that isolation down and get
- 14:33people to come back together.
- 14:35And we prefer to do in a, you know,
- 14:38in some type of a physical format.
- 14:40So that's the rich froning.
- 14:41That's the side of it.
- 14:42That's how long it took him.
- 14:45I think the,
- 14:46The cool thing about this project,
- 14:49you know,
- 14:49last year we had a couple of
- 14:51weeks to get it around.
- 14:52This year, working with Kristen,
- 14:55it's been a completely
- 14:56different show for us.
- 14:57It's been very precise and
- 14:59very programmed and everything,
- 15:01every step along the way,
- 15:02it seems like it's already,
- 15:04everything's been taken care of.
- 15:05And Kristen has done a great
- 15:06job with that.
- 15:08The biggest gap I think we
- 15:10had is we didn't really
- 15:12know who participated last year.
- 15:14We had no idea.
- 15:15We sent flyers out.
- 15:17We tried to get as many people involved.
- 15:20We tried to call as many
- 15:21CrossFit owners as we could
- 15:23in email to say, hey,
- 15:25let's see if you can get
- 15:26your first responder
- 15:26offices involved with this.
- 15:28But we had no way of tracking.
- 15:30So that was one of the things this year.
- 15:32Like, how do we track this?
- 15:35So Emily Kaplan and BSI and Dale King,
- 15:39who you know,
- 15:40real well.
- 15:40And Kristen knows real well,
- 15:42came alongside and said, Hey, let us,
- 15:43you know,
- 15:44let us help you through that process.
- 15:46You know,
- 15:47the goal that Emily and Dale and BSI has,
- 15:51you know,
- 15:52at the heart of it is how do we
- 15:53get the right information
- 15:55to the right people,
- 15:56the correct information,
- 15:57not what people want you to hear.
- 15:59What's the,
- 16:00what's the true story behind medicine,
- 16:04behind functional fitness,
- 16:05behind everything that's
- 16:06health and wellness.
- 16:08And then at the root of it,
- 16:10Everything that was created originally,
- 16:13if you think about CrossFit
- 16:15in its original format,
- 16:16was for first responders.
- 16:18It was for military first responders.
- 16:20And that's, I think, from Emily.
- 16:22I don't want to put words in
- 16:23Emily and Dale's mouth.
- 16:24But if you think about the
- 16:25true meaning behind what
- 16:27they do is ultimately to help.
- 16:30those men and women in blue
- 16:32that are out there every
- 16:33day serving our community,
- 16:35whether it's police, fire, EMS, dispatch,
- 16:40anyone that works in that public service,
- 16:44that's who we want to
- 16:45surround ourselves with.
- 16:46And I think at the root of it, Kristen,
- 16:47that's your heart.
- 16:49So just a shout out to BSI
- 16:51and what they've been able
- 16:52to do to create a link and
- 16:53help us get the word out.
- 16:56So as someone who's worked
- 16:58for the state of Ohio for
- 16:59twenty one years,
- 17:00one thing I know is we use
- 17:02too many acronyms.
- 17:03So BSI stands for Broken
- 17:05Science Initiative.
- 17:06That's right.
- 17:07If you're new to this and
- 17:09Broken Science Initiative
- 17:11is the program that Greg Glassman,
- 17:14Emily Kaplan started.
- 17:16And now Dale King is a big
- 17:18part of and and basically
- 17:21trying to get the truth out as to.
- 17:24um, what's really happening with science.
- 17:27Um,
- 17:27and they have partnered with you and
- 17:29the client to give like a
- 17:31registration link.
- 17:33So, you know,
- 17:34exactly who has signed up for
- 17:36this program.
- 17:37And that was, that was big for us because,
- 17:40you know,
- 17:41going back to what we'd said
- 17:42about last year,
- 17:42we just didn't know who participated.
- 17:44Um,
- 17:45and we wanted to be able to track that.
- 17:48We want to,
- 17:48we want to be able to say thank
- 17:50you to those that jumped in and then
- 17:53What are ways we can grow this?
- 17:58How do we have every
- 18:00firehouse and every police
- 18:02station have this on their
- 18:04calendar so they can do it in the office?
- 18:08They can do it at home.
- 18:10They can find a CrossFit
- 18:11affiliate or any gym for
- 18:13that matter that says, hey,
- 18:15for forty one minutes and twenty seconds,
- 18:17we want to come together and move.
- 18:22When we do that, we share that suffering,
- 18:24so to speak with others.
- 18:25It, it creates, it changes us mentally,
- 18:28right?
- 18:29It creates that bonding
- 18:30through shared suffering
- 18:32that allows us to maybe
- 18:34break the walls of
- 18:35isolation down just a little bit.
- 18:37Um, you know, let's be honest.
- 18:39We, what we find in,
- 18:42in our facility and other
- 18:44facilities like it,
- 18:46people that come through
- 18:47our doors when they're having a tough day,
- 18:49they're probably
- 18:51more often than not ready to
- 18:54talk to their coach or the
- 18:58individual that they just
- 18:59shared suffering for an
- 19:00hour with about their
- 19:02struggles before they go
- 19:03home and take it to their
- 19:04spouse or take it to their
- 19:06workplace or take it to their boss.
- 19:09And that shared suffering
- 19:11creates a bond that,
- 19:13that is unlike anything else.
- 19:15So when you couple that with
- 19:17the mental awareness of, Hey,
- 19:21I'm not the only one struggling here.
- 19:24I know you're probably
- 19:25struggling with something as well.
- 19:27You create something much
- 19:28bigger than yourself.
- 19:30And what we're finding,
- 19:31and Kristen can probably
- 19:33talk to this way better than I can,
- 19:35we're not seeing that in
- 19:37the first responder brother
- 19:40and sisterhood today.
- 19:41There's a lot of self-isolation.
- 19:44Well,
- 19:44that was actually my next question
- 19:46was for Kristen, and that is that
- 19:49one of the reasons this
- 19:50started is to first
- 19:52responders are the backbone
- 19:53of this country.
- 19:55Like they are there to save
- 19:57all of our lives.
- 19:59And it sounds like that
- 20:00you're the state of Ohio
- 20:02wanted to jump in because
- 20:05what you care about is the
- 20:06health and wellness of your
- 20:08first responders.
- 20:09And how do we bring
- 20:10awareness to that in a way
- 20:13that promotes physical fitness?
- 20:15Am I, am I on the mark?
- 20:18Yeah, I think that, again,
- 20:22there's a lot about mental health
- 20:26And there are a lot of
- 20:27programs out there to
- 20:28address that and address
- 20:30things in a reactive sense.
- 20:31Right.
- 20:32So somebody goes on a
- 20:33critical incident and they, you know,
- 20:36it's a really terrible
- 20:37situation or whatever.
- 20:38They have peer support after the fact,
- 20:41you know,
- 20:41somebody to talk to or they
- 20:43might be referred to go to
- 20:45counseling or something
- 20:46like that or therapists.
- 20:48And there are some people
- 20:50and first responders,
- 20:51especially law enforcement,
- 20:53are a group of people that
- 20:54just won't do that.
- 20:56And, you know, they put up their shield,
- 20:59they put that uniform back on,
- 21:00they go back the next day
- 21:01and they're tough, right?
- 21:02And they have to be.
- 21:03And again, first responders,
- 21:05any of them are responding
- 21:06to people on their worst day.
- 21:09And then they're doing it a
- 21:10few minutes later on the
- 21:11next call that they get.
- 21:13And it's that the whole
- 21:14issue is who's taking care of them,
- 21:16who's giving them time and
- 21:18giving them space and also
- 21:19addressing what their needs are.
- 21:22Because like Matt is referring to,
- 21:25they may not want to talk to somebody,
- 21:27but they may want to go to
- 21:28a gym or a facility.
- 21:30and, you know, run a few miles,
- 21:32do some CrossFit, heaven forbid,
- 21:34they want to do some burpees.
- 21:37But, you know, they,
- 21:38they may want to use the
- 21:40physical side as an outlet,
- 21:43as opposed to talking to
- 21:44somebody about it,
- 21:45because maybe there's just
- 21:46less stigma attached to going to the gym.
- 21:50And so our,
- 21:51our goal and our focus is
- 21:52really to address
- 21:54all of those things and and
- 21:56whole person you know one
- 21:57thing that we don't talk
- 21:58enough about is first
- 21:59responders sleep and how
- 22:01much sleep they get and
- 22:02their nutrition and what
- 22:03they're eating you know
- 22:04they're sitting in a patrol
- 22:05car all day driving around
- 22:07they're sitting in a
- 22:07dispatch you know behind a
- 22:09desk at the dispatch site
- 22:10and they're they're taking
- 22:11these phone calls all day
- 22:13and are they getting up and
- 22:14moving you know physically
- 22:15moving or whatever so with
- 22:17this event and moving
- 22:18forward like we would like to address
- 22:22whole person health and find
- 22:24ways to bring resources to
- 22:26first responders around the
- 22:28state of Ohio.
- 22:29And there just aren't enough
- 22:31in a proactive sense like
- 22:33that to build that
- 22:34resiliency and to address
- 22:36those physical needs.
- 22:38There just aren't enough
- 22:39programs out there yet.
- 22:40And so this this climb and our, you know,
- 22:43the Office of First
- 22:43Responder Wellness are two
- 22:45of the things that we're
- 22:46going to utilize to try to
- 22:47bring those resources if we can.
- 22:50So Matt,
- 22:51last year this was a very
- 22:52Ohio-centric campaign.
- 22:55With Broken Science
- 22:56Initiative creating a
- 22:58registration portal for you guys,
- 23:01naturally that's made it
- 23:03more of a nationwide event.
- 23:05Have you had directors from
- 23:07other agencies across the
- 23:09country reach out to you
- 23:10about this event?
- 23:12So we've had other facilities,
- 23:14other CrossFit affiliates
- 23:15reach out and sign up to host.
- 23:18And we've talked to Denver.
- 23:22So Debbie and I work with
- 23:24the state of Colorado and
- 23:27particularly Denver County, Colorado.
- 23:29And we've worked with them.
- 23:30They are going to
- 23:31participate in this event as well.
- 23:34So it's starting to spread
- 23:37slowly but surely.
- 23:38And if you think,
- 23:39I want to go back to what Kristen said,
- 23:42about how do we why do we
- 23:45want people to move why do
- 23:47we feel that tying the
- 23:49mental health along with
- 23:51the physical health is the
- 23:53best way to do it and and I
- 23:55would say that all that the
- 23:56proof is in the pudding if
- 23:57you look at what dale king
- 24:00has done with um with the
- 24:02addiction services that he provides
- 24:05And the background that Dale
- 24:06has in successfully working
- 24:11with individuals through
- 24:14mental health and wellness
- 24:17provides success.
- 24:18You look at the program that we run,
- 24:21you know, for seven years,
- 24:22we've run a track record of
- 24:23twenty three percent recidivism rate.
- 24:25in juveniles,
- 24:26which typically is in the
- 24:27seventy or eighty percent,
- 24:29meaning seventy percent of
- 24:30the time a youth comes off for probation,
- 24:34they're right back on
- 24:34probation in years one, three or five.
- 24:38Right.
- 24:39And Dale has the same success.
- 24:41If you look at what Dale and
- 24:43BSI and that group is doing
- 24:46and what we're doing,
- 24:47the numbers are there.
- 24:49So Greg Glassman always used to say, hey,
- 24:53I can't tell you about CrossFit.
- 24:54Just come in and give it six months.
- 24:56I don't care if it's CrossFit or not.
- 24:58Find a organized group of
- 25:01individuals that's led by a
- 25:03coach that provides a
- 25:06physical outlet where you
- 25:09can share that suffering,
- 25:11whether you're walking or
- 25:11doing yoga or doing
- 25:13functional movement at some
- 25:15type of intensity.
- 25:16where you can share that
- 25:17together and give it six months.
- 25:19And I guarantee your life
- 25:20will be different.
- 25:22And that's what we need
- 25:23first responders to do.
- 25:25We need to, like she said,
- 25:27they put on that shield every day, right?
- 25:30But that shield on the other
- 25:31side probably has cracks in it.
- 25:33And those cracks lead to
- 25:35devastation if not taken care of.
- 25:38And we're trying to do that
- 25:40by bringing people together
- 25:42in this initiative.
- 25:45So Kristin, I have a follow up to you.
- 25:47You have this one big event
- 25:49every nine eleven to
- 25:51promote awareness to this.
- 25:53What are the steps from that
- 25:55day to make it make it
- 25:58stick throughout the three
- 25:59hundred and sixty four other days?
- 26:01I think that's a great question,
- 26:04and I don't know that I
- 26:05have an answer to it,
- 26:06but I think that it needs to be routine.
- 26:11movement, whether it's events, you know,
- 26:14there's obviously this is a big event.
- 26:17But what about, you know,
- 26:18monthly events or challenges.
- 26:20So one of the things that my
- 26:23office started a couple
- 26:25months ago was we just
- 26:26started a physical fitness
- 26:27challenge for the month.
- 26:29And
- 26:30again that is that you're
- 26:32kind of standing shoulder
- 26:33to shoulder or you're doing
- 26:34push-ups right next to each
- 26:35other in the office or
- 26:36squats or whatever it is um
- 26:39but it's a challenge right
- 26:40and it gets people talking
- 26:42it gets people moving um
- 26:43and also you know
- 26:44addressing other things
- 26:46like breathing you know how
- 26:48that that can improve your
- 26:49sleep or whatever grounding
- 26:51and how that can just
- 26:52improve your overall mental
- 26:54and physical health and I think that
- 26:56Making it a routine is
- 26:59something that we're going
- 27:00to be pretty diligent about.
- 27:03Not sure what that looks like.
- 27:04I don't know how many more
- 27:05workouts everybody can come up with.
- 27:08And if they include burpees, you know,
- 27:09I may not do them.
- 27:10But, you know,
- 27:12I think it has to be
- 27:14dedicated time and energy
- 27:17to all of wellness and health.
- 27:22And I think that's what my
- 27:23office is hopefully going
- 27:24to be focused on.
- 27:26So I'm going to dive a little deeper.
- 27:28Has there been any thought
- 27:29to partnering with
- 27:32different gyms or partnering with,
- 27:35you know,
- 27:35there's these programming apps
- 27:37out there that send a
- 27:38workout of the day every day,
- 27:40partnering with them that, you know,
- 27:42the state police force get
- 27:45to use this at a discounted
- 27:47rate or whatever,
- 27:49or things of that nature to
- 27:52promote fitness beyond this one day?
- 27:56Yeah,
- 27:57there are a lot of apps that are
- 27:59available.
- 28:00There are agencies that
- 28:02actually use those apps.
- 28:03One of them is the Cordico app.
- 28:05And it's really,
- 28:06there's so many different
- 28:08law enforcement and first
- 28:09responder agencies that
- 28:10addressing it holistically
- 28:12is somewhat difficult.
- 28:15But I think that that is
- 28:17definitely something that
- 28:18we could explore.
- 28:19And one of the things that
- 28:20we're asking through this
- 28:23event is for local agencies
- 28:25facilities, affiliates, gyms, whomever,
- 28:29to open their doors and say, come on in,
- 28:31come be part of this.
- 28:33And we want that to
- 28:35hopefully open up some partnerships.
- 28:38We were contacted the other
- 28:39day by a gym owner who his
- 28:42gym is located right across
- 28:43the street from a police department.
- 28:45And so he works with them on
- 28:47a regular basis to try to
- 28:50Rehab them if there's an
- 28:51injury or just help them
- 28:53with workouts or whatever it is.
- 28:56Some of this stuff is not
- 28:58necessarily a state
- 29:00initiative we can encourage,
- 29:01but the locals, I mean,
- 29:03if you go into all of these
- 29:04local communities,
- 29:05they're very supportive of
- 29:06their first responders.
- 29:07And so some of this is just
- 29:08the awareness of, you know, this,
- 29:10this facility exists, come on in,
- 29:12you know, use the gym or whatever,
- 29:14whatever it happens to be.
- 29:16Um,
- 29:16in addition to any types of programming
- 29:18that we can, we can put on.
- 29:21The awareness too,
- 29:22because there's so many
- 29:23different flavors of
- 29:24fitness out there that
- 29:26people like we talk,
- 29:28the three of us probably do
- 29:29a different type of fitness
- 29:31from each other because of
- 29:33what our needs are.
- 29:34Right.
- 29:36Um,
- 29:36And maybe just awareness to
- 29:38what all is available out there.
- 29:40Some gyms have like PTs in
- 29:43the gym that can help with rehab.
- 29:46You know,
- 29:47there's just a lot of different
- 29:49possibilities out there.
- 29:51And I think awareness is
- 29:52just a big thing that needs
- 29:53to be promoted.
- 29:55Scott, I would add in my perfect world,
- 29:59if you think about what we
- 30:01do from an affiliate owner perspective,
- 30:06If I if I look at, you know,
- 30:08I'm sitting in Salina, Ohio.
- 30:11It's a population of ten
- 30:12thousand Mercer County
- 30:13population of sixty five or
- 30:17seventy five thousand.
- 30:18It's pretty rural.
- 30:18Right.
- 30:19You know, I look at the fire,
- 30:22the firehouse here.
- 30:23We've full time firefighters
- 30:26and they have a section in
- 30:27their firehouse.
- 30:28They could do physical
- 30:29fitness in a perfect world.
- 30:31I see this as.
- 30:34groups like us, you know,
- 30:36partnering with facilities like that,
- 30:39doing something in-house, working,
- 30:42you know,
- 30:42having every firehouse that
- 30:44houses full-time firefighters,
- 30:47full-time police,
- 30:48having the ability to do
- 30:51functional movement, functional fitness,
- 30:54call it, I don't care what,
- 30:56inside of their facility, right?
- 30:59Whether that's on duty or off duty,
- 31:01something that allows them
- 31:03Maybe they don't have an opportunity.
- 31:05And if you think about a lot of families,
- 31:06they're, you know,
- 31:08first responders are
- 31:09working odd shifts as it is.
- 31:11They've got families, right?
- 31:13So when they're not working,
- 31:14they're trying to dive into
- 31:15their family life,
- 31:16kids and sports and all of that.
- 31:19You start to look at, yeah, well, you know,
- 31:21fitness is you just have to
- 31:22schedule it out of your day.
- 31:24For a first responder,
- 31:25that's sometimes extremely difficult.
- 31:28They don't have, you know,
- 31:29a nine to five or an eight
- 31:31to five like you and I do.
- 31:32Um,
- 31:33so how do we bring it to the firehouse?
- 31:35And, you know,
- 31:36one of the things that I
- 31:37would love at some point is
- 31:38to introduce programs that
- 31:40we could partner with state
- 31:41entities that says,
- 31:42here's a program that we
- 31:44could help you kick off the ground,
- 31:47find us a firehouse and
- 31:49let's do it inside of the facility.
- 31:52And now it's there, it's there.
- 31:53So it's not, you know,
- 31:55it's not something that, Hey, they're,
- 31:56they have to come to us.
- 31:57They can supplement their
- 32:00personal fitness in a gym like ours.
- 32:03but it's driven through the office,
- 32:06through the facility that
- 32:07they're working for.
- 32:09But anyways, I just, you know,
- 32:11those are ideas that I have.
- 32:13And I know Kristen and I
- 32:13have talked about that briefly,
- 32:15but those are our thoughts.
- 32:18So before I let you guys go,
- 32:20the details of this event, nine,
- 32:21eleven is this Wednesday, I believe,
- 32:23correct?
- 32:26And so for your event,
- 32:27you're kicking it off with
- 32:28a live workout at, if people don't know,
- 32:33we have an old soccer stadium,
- 32:35not that old,
- 32:36but they built a brand new one.
- 32:37So this one isn't being used
- 32:39as much here in Columbus.
- 32:41And that's where you're
- 32:42kicking it off is the old crew stadium.
- 32:46Do you have the workout
- 32:47published anywhere?
- 32:49Yeah.
- 32:49So it's on the flyer that we send out.
- 32:52I know that we posted it on our,
- 32:56web pages.
- 32:56Kristen, has the state shared that out?
- 33:00Yes.
- 33:00What's your web page?
- 33:02I'm just going to try to pull it up.
- 33:09Yeah,
- 33:09let me see where it's at now that I
- 33:12think about that.
- 33:15You can go to our CrossFit Crave,
- 33:18CF Crave Instagram.
- 33:20I think it's on there.
- 33:21You put me on the spot now, Scottie.
- 33:24I don't help you on that.
- 33:26Debbie does.
- 33:26Where's Debbie at?
- 33:28She might be putting it in the comments.
- 33:30If you're reading comments,
- 33:31let me jump on.
- 33:33Yeah.
- 33:33If you go to, just go to my Instagram,
- 33:36go to coach underscore Schindelbecker.
- 33:38I've, I found it on your crave.
- 33:40There you go.
- 33:41I got it.
- 33:41So I'm going to share it.
- 33:43So it's there.
- 33:43And I think Kristen has it
- 33:45on some of your state sites or PDS,
- 33:49maybe.
- 33:51Yeah, there it is.
- 33:52So,
- 33:59So here it is.
- 34:00It's forty one minutes and
- 34:01twenty seconds of physical
- 34:02movement that you choose in
- 34:04honor of the four hundred
- 34:05twelve first responders who
- 34:06lost their lives.
- 34:08There is a CrossFit quad and
- 34:11it is one hundred stairs or steps,
- 34:14twenty burpees, thirty sit ups,
- 34:17forty lunges, air squats.
- 34:20And I'm assuming that that's
- 34:21depending on what you have.
- 34:25Yeah.
- 34:27And there's a workout explanation there.
- 34:30to do it.
- 34:30And then, like Kristen said,
- 34:32we're at the stadium,
- 34:33we're having walking, we're having yoga,
- 34:37and then you can climb,
- 34:38you can just climb the
- 34:39stairs if you'd like,
- 34:40or just walk the stadium steps.
- 34:42And the goal to offer those,
- 34:43the rest of those is, listen,
- 34:44you can do this anywhere.
- 34:46You can do it at home,
- 34:47you can do it at your fire station,
- 34:49your police station.
- 34:51The goal is there to move,
- 34:52preferably with others,
- 34:54meaning you're finding your
- 34:56partner or somebody
- 34:57that you can move with for
- 34:59forty one minutes and twenty seconds.
- 35:01And then we implore you to register.
- 35:04So if you click on that link,
- 35:06it takes you to the registration site.
- 35:09I don't know if that's a
- 35:10clickable link there on yours,
- 35:11but if you click on that,
- 35:13it takes you to the
- 35:13registration site where you can sign up.
- 35:17Tell us where you're doing
- 35:18the event at and it'll walk
- 35:21you through that whole process there.
- 35:24so that takes you to broken
- 35:27science yep um and their
- 35:31link is on there some not
- 35:32much and then you go to the
- 35:37link that they provide I'm
- 35:38trying and then there is
- 35:44events my share screen doesn't follow so
- 35:54Yeah, that's all right.
- 35:58I don't see it on here.
- 35:59I can get you the link, Scott.
- 36:03So what I'll do is after
- 36:04we're done with the show today,
- 36:06I'll get that link from Matt.
- 36:07I'll put it in the
- 36:10description of this video.
- 36:13And you can click on that to register.
- 36:16And really the important
- 36:17thing is move for forty one
- 36:19minutes and twenty seconds.
- 36:22If you want to do it in the
- 36:23CrossFit WOD that they provide, awesome.
- 36:26You get to do that.
- 36:27If you want to climb stairs,
- 36:28you want to go for a run, whatever,
- 36:31ride a bike, whatever it is,
- 36:33just move for forty one
- 36:34minutes and twenty seconds.
- 36:37Grab your friends and family, too.
- 36:39That's it.
- 36:40I was going to say,
- 36:42we prefer you to do that with others.
- 36:45And it's that shared suffering,
- 36:46that shared bonding that
- 36:49we're really looking for.
- 36:51Well, guys, this has been awesome.
- 36:53Is there anything I missed
- 36:54in my questioning that you
- 36:55guys want to get out there?
- 36:58Kristen?
- 37:00Not for me.
- 37:00Thank you.
- 37:02I think we're good here.
- 37:04Scott,
- 37:04I appreciate the time and putting us
- 37:07on and helping us get the word out.
- 37:09That's the biggest thing, I think.
- 37:11Sharing the message and
- 37:12sharing the word is
- 37:14probably the hardest thing to do,
- 37:16and I appreciate you
- 37:16jumping in and helping us out with that.
- 37:19Well, Matt, you know,
- 37:20you're one of my favorite
- 37:21dudes in this space.

- 37:30about whatever it is you
- 37:31want to talk about.
- 37:33What you are doing for our state.
- 37:38in this space is remarkable
- 37:40and should be commended by
- 37:42as many people as possible
- 37:44that know about it.
- 37:47Anytime you need a platform,
- 37:49you have this one.
- 37:50I appreciate it.
- 37:52None of this wouldn't happen
- 37:53if that girl that's sitting
- 37:54right in the middle of us,
- 37:56this wouldn't be a thing if
- 37:58it weren't for her hard work.
- 38:00I would not want the hours
- 38:02that she's put into this,
- 38:03I would not want that job.
- 38:06Again,
- 38:10this Wednesday move for forty one
- 38:12minutes and twenty seconds
- 38:13with a group of friends,
- 38:14group of family members,
