- 0:18This video is specifically designed to help you understand
- 0:21what do you do if your partner or your friend or even your kid
- 0:24is diagnosed with autism or somebody you look and even as an
- 0:27adult. So we're going to go through
- 0:30some things like some typical protocol, which is the things
- 0:32that you can take on board if you've just found out this one,
- 0:34you know, is diagnosed with autism and how you can support
- 0:37them and and support you. Also, I just want to say that if
- 0:40you are having any mental health issues and you don't want the
- 0:42stress and the struggle of going out to try and find a
- 0:44counsellor, I highly recommend an app called Better Help.
- 0:47This is not sponsored better help is LinkedIn, the
- 0:49description down below, but it's an app on your phone that you
- 0:52can download and you can use that app to connect to a
- 0:55counsellor within 24 to 48 hours and they will connect to you via
- 0:59video or just chat or even audio phone call and you can have a
- 1:02session with them completely from the comfort of your home.
- 1:04Super accessible, super good and you can find specific people who
- 1:07deal with just ADHD or autism or mental health issues totally up
- 1:11to you. So check out better help in the
- 1:13link in description down below and by using the link out as
- 1:15well. So that's kind of cool.
- 1:16OK, so the first thing to do if you are, you know, with on who
- 1:20you love and they are diagnosed with autism, you know, I would
- 1:23say that understand and educate yourself all about autism.
- 1:27You know, watching videos like this, reading magazines, signing
- 1:29up to newsletters with subscribing some blogs about
- 1:32going to the National Artistic Society meet ups or any charity
- 1:36that you know have meet ups or social groups, go to those and
- 1:39learn about the subject of autism.
- 1:41The second thing you should do is be supportive and apathetic
- 1:43towards the individual who has the autos discussion condition
- 1:46because they're going to a lot try to adjust themselves and
- 1:49starting up their diagnosis means that they are like this
- 1:52now and they're trying to become more themselves and they just
- 1:56need your support and understanding.
- 1:58You have to encourage open communication and provide a safe
- 2:00space for the personal spectrum to express themselves.
- 2:03And this is essential because if you can't express yourself and
- 2:06you can't kind of like be yourself around somebody who you
- 2:09love about your condition and then you're kind of not really
- 2:12moving forward, you're kind of being stuck at a standstill.
- 2:15So the more open you can be with somebody, the better.
- 2:18So just try and promote that open communication.
- 2:20Recognizing and respecting the unique strengths and challenges
- 2:23is very crucial to this. Because if you don't understand
- 2:26their challenges and their uniqueness, then they're going
- 2:28to feel kind of like a bit left out or maybe feel quite
- 2:30alienated from a situation and their uniqueness may not be seen
- 2:34as such. You can also seek professional
- 2:37help from therapists and autism specialists that can be really
- 2:40beneficial for or the people who are on the autism spectrum are
- 2:43people who are loved ones of people on the autism spectrum.
- 2:45It doesn't just have to be the autistic person getting therapy.
- 2:48You know the family can benefit from this too if they're finding
- 2:50a struggle. Promoting a dependence and
- 2:53allowing the autistic person to make decisions for themselves is
- 2:56encouraging. It's encouraging because
- 2:58autistic individuals will have issues with executive
- 3:00dysfunction which is organizing, planning, being independent and
- 3:04these things are take a mental health toll on an autistic
- 3:07person when they find struggles in these areas.
- 3:10But above all, being patient and flexible, accommodating the
- 3:13needs that generally contributed to autism to help the well-being
- 3:17of the person you love. He's got to be so awesome and
- 3:20all pay from dividends because the happier the person is then
- 3:22the easier life is and the easier life is the easier Rd.
- 3:25you get. Encouraging social
- 3:27communications and providing opportunities for social
- 3:30interaction is really crucial because autistic people will
- 3:33have issues with social interaction, they'll have issues
- 3:35socialising in general and finding opportunities to
- 3:38socialise may be quite difficult.
- 3:40So encouraging those would be amazing.
- 3:43But the most significant thing is self-care for both an
- 3:45individual and the autism loved one.
- 3:48Both of you need self-care. Self-care means taking a brief
- 3:52when you need it, making sure you're not overdoing it, making
- 3:54sure that your needs are met and their needs are met completely.
- 3:58Because what's going to happen is if you do everything for the
- 4:00other person, then you're going to burn out.
- 4:02And you can't be of support when the person you need to support
- 4:06needs you when you need support yourself.
- 4:08So it's a whole thing. Self-care is important and it's
- 4:11number one guys. If you enjoyed this video, give
- 4:13it a like share this video and I'll see you in the next one
- 4:15guys, peace.
