- 0:01Rare are those individuals who can take up a practice and not
- 0:04see any result whatsoever, yet continue on with endless
- 0:09patience and persistence. We look at the example of
- 0:13Milarepa, the great Yogi of Tibet, who spent a number of
- 0:17years doing hard labour at the behest of his guru Marpa, and
- 0:22who was not granted any teachings.
- 0:25Yet even Milarepa did not do this without a sense that there
- 0:28were real powers and achievable results if he persevered.
- 0:34His time learning and practicing the magic arts showed him the
- 0:38powers available and their real and tangible results.
- 0:43Who could endure the dark night of the soul if he had not
- 0:48previously had experiences that showed him the light, the power,
- 0:52the peace of the spiritual experience?
- 0:57Most people who take up yoga seriously actually do so after
- 1:01some kind of experience of an opening.
- 1:04Danny and Brinkley, struck by lightning, was pronounced dead
- 1:08and came back to life with a vision, a knowledge and a
- 1:12mission. The real and lasting impact of
- 1:15the practice he took up afterwards shows the power of
- 1:19the spiritual force to redirect the life, the focus and the
- 1:24understanding. Widely reported experiences
- 1:28include the rising of a powerful force from the base of the spine
- 1:32up through the top of the skull, or a sense of a descending force
- 1:37drilling or raining down from above into the being.
- 1:42It is not just the physical experience, however, that shows
- 1:45the power of the yogic force. A review of one's life and how
- 1:50the psychology has changed, how the reactions have changed, show
- 1:54the power of the inward view that yoga brings with it.
- 1:59There arise new powers of patience, peace, focus and
- 2:04concentration in action, an inner sense of contentment or
- 2:08joy, a new power that yields results in whatever field one
- 2:13tends to focus. As the Gita says, yoga ha
- 2:18karmasuko Shalom. Yoga is skill in works.
- 2:24When certain types of experience arise, they change everything
- 2:28for the individual. There are new sources of
- 2:31inspiration. There may be a rising, a form of
- 2:34intuition. There are new ways of seeing
- 2:37that break out of the narrow step by step approach of the
- 2:41logical intellect and move swiftly and surely to a new
- 2:45level of understanding and with it a new power of action.
- 2:51Many find they are able to move the focus of their awareness
- 2:54within their being in the head, between the eyebrows, in the
- 3:00heart, in the solar plexus, and experience different results
- 3:05depending on the Nexus they have opened in so doing.
- 3:10When we look at the lives most people live, they seem to fixed
- 3:14in a firm routine, unchanging, invariable, seemingly laid out
- 3:20in a line from birth to death. The yogic practitioner's life is
- 3:25vastly different and we observe changes in patterns, changes in
- 3:30responses, changes in understanding, growth,
- 3:35development, experimentation. Sri Robindo observes quote.
- 3:41The invisible force producing tangible results both inward and
- 3:45outward is the whole meaning of the yoga consciousness.
- 3:50Your question about yoga bringing merely a feeling of
- 3:53power without any result was really very strange.
- 3:57Who would be satisfied with such a meaningless hallucination and
- 4:02call it power if we had not had thousands of experiences showing
- 4:07that the power within could alter the mind, develop its
- 4:11powers, add new ones, bring in new ranges of knowledge, master
- 4:16the vital movements, change the character, influence men and
- 4:20things, control the conditions and functionings of the body,
- 4:25work as a concrete dynamic force on other forces, modify events,
- 4:30etcetera, etcetera? We would not speak of it as we
- 4:34do. Moreover, it is not only in its
- 4:38results, but in its movements that the force is tangible and
- 4:43concrete. When I speak of feeling force or
- 4:46power, I do not mean simply having a vague sense of it, but
- 4:51feeling it concretely and consequently being able to
- 4:55direct it, manipulate it, watch its movements, be conscious of
- 4:59its mass and intensity, and in the same way of that of other,
- 5:04perhaps opposing forces. All these things are possible
- 5:09and usual by the development of yoga.
