- 0:13went Hey, listeners. This is Nick from scripture
- 0:17Central. And today's podcast addresses,
- 0:20the question, how does the parable of the willing and
- 0:23unwilling Sons teach about Christ?
- 0:30The day after Jesus, cleanse the temple, their Chief priests and
- 0:33Elders. Came to him and demanded to know
- 0:35why he performed such an action asking by what Authority doest,
- 0:39thou these things and who gave you this Authority in response.
- 0:44Jesus posed a question, where John the Baptist received his
- 0:47authority to baptize, which the priests and Elders, could not
- 0:50answer, Jesus responded. Neither tell I you by what
- 0:54Authority I do these things. Jesus done.
- 0:58Offered numerous Parables beginning with the parable of
- 1:00the willing and the unwilling sons while Jesus is moved to
- 1:04teaching with parables. In this instance may seem out of
- 1:06place John and Jenni Welch have observed that the parable of the
- 1:10willing and unwilling Sons is quite pertinent to the context
- 1:15while Jesus would not expand on his authority in any explicit
- 1:18terms. He would answer both of their to
- 1:21calculating questions. Only those who were spiritually
- 1:24attuned with then be able to discern his answer.
- 1:27Ultimately this Parable Embraces three elements of the Plan of
- 1:30Salvation one that the plan was set forth by the father in the
- 1:34premortal council in heaven to that Jesus was selected by the
- 1:38father in the premortal council in heaven.
- 1:41And three that the father had conferred Upon Jesus, the
- 1:45all-important authority to act in the father's name according
- 1:48to his will, this is especially evident when one examines the
- 1:52underlying Greek text, when the father approaches his first son,
- 1:56the King James version, records, the interaction thus, son go
- 2:01work. Today in my Vineyard, he
- 2:03answered and said, I will not but afterward, he repented and
- 2:07went this translation is ambiguous partially because the
- 2:11Greek itself is purposefully ambiguous and Modern English
- 2:14readers. Might understand that the Sun
- 2:16appears to be utterly refusing to go.
- 2:19However, the Greek text does not imply, this rather it should be
- 2:23translated more like it is not my will or my wish to go.
- 2:27When understood in this context it becomes clearer how this
- 2:30first son might typify Christ throughout his mortal Ministry.
- 2:34Jesus often said that he came to do not his own will but rather
- 2:38the will of the Father for I came down from heaven not to do
- 2:41mine own will but the will of him that sent me even in
- 2:45Gethsemane as Jesus suffered for the sins of the world.
- 2:48His prayer was to reconcile. His will with the father's o my
- 2:52father. If it be possible, let this cup
- 2:55pass from me. nevertheless, not as I will, but as thou wilt
- 3:01Similarly, the first son in this Parable reconciled himself to
- 3:04the will of his father and went to the vineyard John and Judy
- 3:07Welch note that the King James rendering as repented is
- 3:11unfortunate as the Greek employs a word with only a similar
- 3:15meeting, but not the same meaning, understanding the sun
- 3:18is reconciling his will with his father's allows us to understand
- 3:22more deeply how Jesus suffered willingly for us.
- 3:25The Second Son in this Parable, likewise desire to go into the
- 3:28vineyard but for drastically different.
- 3:31Reasons. Well, the King James version
- 3:33says that this son enthusiastically States.
- 3:35I go the Greek text simply reads.
- 3:39I yet this son did not do the will of the Father John and
- 3:43Jenni Welch note the similarities between this,
- 3:45Parable with accounts of the premortal council.
- 3:47In heaven found in Moses and Abraham.
- 3:51And Moses 4:1, Lucifer is recorded as giving a very
- 3:54similar response to the father. As the second son gives to his
- 3:59Lucifer's response. Focuses inordinately on the man
- 4:02himself seeking to draw the attention of those present
- 4:06behold here. Am I send me?
- 4:09I will be thy son and I will redeem all mankind.
- 4:13That one Soul shall not be lost, and surely, I will do it.
- 4:18Wherefore give me thine honor. Such a lofty response stands in
- 4:24stark contrast to the answer of Jesus Christ.
- 4:27Father thy will be done and the glory be thine forever.
- 4:32Thus, this Parable offers a direct declaration that Jesus
- 4:36Christ, is the first son who went to do the will of his
- 4:39father as he agreed to do in the premortal council, such a
- 4:43declaration would not have been lost on his audience.
- 4:46Either John and Jenni Welch note that the chief priests knew
- 4:50enough about Heavenly councils from their own Hebrew, prophetic
- 4:53Traditions as well as from Jesus open statements at the temple
- 4:57about coming to do the will of the father who had sent him that
- 5:01they would well have Understood what Jesus was talking about.
- 5:05Jesus Christ, is our perfect Exemplar from the very
- 5:09beginning. He recognized the father's will
- 5:11and sought to do all that was needed of him as we seek to
- 5:15follow. Jesus example.
- 5:17Then we can learn how we are to continually reconcile.
- 5:20Our will with God's by repenting of our sins, and seeking the
- 5:24presence of the Holy Ghost In Our Lives.
- 5:27We can, similarly see, this Parable is an invitation to
- 5:30follow Jesus example, as Jesus himself taught with the
- 5:34publicans and harlots heard, John the Baptist, preached in
- 5:36the wilderness they believed in his words and repented of their
- 5:40sins. In other words, they reconciled
- 5:42their will with the father's will allowing their desires to
- 5:45be swallowed up in his. Because of this Christ assured
- 5:49them, that they would have a place in the father's Kingdom
- 5:52that promised blessing of peace and enjoyment of the father's
- 5:55kingdom is similarly open to all who repent and follow Jesus
- 5:59Christ. As his disciples it is never too
- 6:02Too late, no matter where we are on life's path to leave our
- 6:06worldly desires behind us and follow him as we do.
- 6:11So we can have the same mentality that Jesus had.
- 6:15And similarly promised, the Lord, father thy will be done
- 6:19and the glory be thine forever. Thank you for listening to this
