- 0:02Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, your home for
- 0:06Speaker 1: deer hunting news, stories and strategies, and now your host,
- 0:11Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon. Welcome to the Wired to Hunt Podcast. I'm
- 0:16Speaker 1: your host, Mark Kenyan in this episode number two D
- 0:19Speaker 1: and to Dan the show. We're kicking off another year
- 0:22Speaker 1: of our radio mini series in which we chat with
- 0:25Speaker 1: hunters from all across the country each week to get
- 0:28Speaker 1: the latest intel on current deer activity and the tactics
- 0:31Speaker 1: that are working. Right now, all right, welcome to the
- 0:47Speaker 1: Wired Hunt Podcast, brought to you by on X, and
- 0:49Speaker 1: this is our first episode of two thousand nineteen of
- 0:54Speaker 1: our RUT Radio series. But we're actually calling out something
- 0:57Speaker 1: slightly different this year. We're calling rut Fresh Radio. But
- 1:02Speaker 1: it is the exact same things that you've heard over
- 1:04Speaker 1: the last three seasons. We're calling this rout Fresh Radio.
- 1:08Speaker 1: I will give you a very quick behind the scenes
- 1:11Speaker 1: explanation here because our buddy Spencer new Hearth. While you, Spencer,
- 1:16Speaker 1: you started something called RUT Fresh I think last year,
- 1:19Speaker 1: right a blog in which you were sharing written RUT
- 1:23Speaker 1: reports that kind of went along with the same kinds
- 1:26Speaker 1: of things we were talking about on RUT radio. And
- 1:28Speaker 1: when you joined the Mediator team, which happened when last
- 1:32Speaker 1: year earlier this year October. Okay, so when you joined,
- 1:38Speaker 1: we decided, hey, we should keep ret Fresh Reports going,
- 1:40Speaker 1: but we're of course and keep rut Radio going. And
- 1:43Speaker 1: it could get kind of confusing if we had the
- 1:44Speaker 1: two same things but with slightly different names. We decided
- 1:48Speaker 1: to combine the names. So there's going to be the
- 1:52Speaker 1: same RUT Radio mini series that we do here in
- 1:54Speaker 1: the podcast. We're just gonna call rut Fresh Radio, and
- 1:57Speaker 1: then you're gonna have rut Fresh written reports on the
- 2:00Speaker 1: mediair website to right, That's right. Those are going to
- 2:03Speaker 1: start in October, okay, sweet. So for those that aren't
- 2:06Speaker 1: familiar with what we do here on this series, this
- 2:09Speaker 1: is going to be a series that we are running
- 2:11Speaker 1: in addition to the regular wire Dump podcast each week,
- 2:14Speaker 1: and it's going to run from this week all the
- 2:16Speaker 1: way to the end of the two thousand nine hunting season.
- 2:19Speaker 1: Give me the cliff notes on what folks can expect, Spencer.
- 2:22Speaker 1: This is the fourth season of doing this mini podcast.
- 2:27Speaker 1: These episodes are going to come out every single Wednesday,
- 2:30Speaker 1: and every week I'm going to talk to some highly
- 2:33Speaker 1: respected white tail hunters from across the country and get
- 2:37Speaker 1: the latest reports from what they're seeing, what the buck
- 2:40Speaker 1: activity has been like, uh, if the moon face has
- 2:43Speaker 1: changed anything, if the weather pattern to mess stuff up,
- 2:47Speaker 1: what those food sources look like in their area, if
- 2:50Speaker 1: the bachelor groups are still together, if calling works right now,
- 2:53Speaker 1: if signmaking has started, all of that stuff. And so
- 2:57Speaker 1: we get a breakdown of what they've been seeing in
- 3:00Speaker 1: the past few days, and then also prediction on what
- 3:02Speaker 1: they expect to come in the coming days. Right, that's right,
- 3:05Speaker 1: And the idea of this podcast is to give you
- 3:08Speaker 1: the freshest intel possible. Good at give you guys a
- 3:12Speaker 1: peep behind the curtain here. But we are recording this
- 3:14Speaker 1: on a Tuesday in this episode will drop Wednesday morning,
- 3:18Speaker 1: so the reports that you're hearing are less than twenty
- 3:21Speaker 1: four hours old, and hopefully if you are somebody who
- 3:24Speaker 1: is a weekend warrior hunter, this will give you some
- 3:27Speaker 1: ideas of what to do in the upcoming weekend. You're
- 3:30Speaker 1: gonna hear some great reports on here from hopefully somebody
- 3:35Speaker 1: in your neck of the woods, and maybe they'll say
- 3:37Speaker 1: something that you pick up on um and it helps
- 3:40Speaker 1: you make an informed decision for an upcoming hunt. That
- 3:44Speaker 1: happens to me almost every week prior to a hunt.
- 3:47Speaker 1: I'm using this intel hopefully just like you guys are,
- 3:51Speaker 1: and it's really helped me in a lot of cases
- 3:53Speaker 1: in the past. Yeah, I'll say another thing that we've
- 3:56Speaker 1: both kind of spoken to over the last couple of years,
- 3:58Speaker 1: we've started seeing not only there's is there value in
- 4:01Speaker 1: these the very recent intel part of it, but then
- 4:05Speaker 1: also what I've started to do is I will go
- 4:07Speaker 1: back and listen to the prior year or previous couple
- 4:10Speaker 1: of years during the same date range, and then you
- 4:12Speaker 1: can start to pick up on certain trends. So, for example,
- 4:17Speaker 1: this is the first week of September, we're gonna hear
- 4:19Speaker 1: from people that are hunting, you know, right now. But
- 4:22Speaker 1: if we went and listened to last year's episode from
- 4:24Speaker 1: the first week of September, we might find certain things
- 4:27Speaker 1: to talk about that might relate to this year as well.
- 4:29Speaker 1: Maybe last year's episode someone said, hey, we got a
- 4:32Speaker 1: cold front. Then September five, it got dear moving like crazy.
- 4:36Speaker 1: And if you have it to be hunting this week
- 4:38Speaker 1: on September five or eighth or whatever, and you have
- 4:41Speaker 1: a coal front coming, you can say, hey, that worked
- 4:43Speaker 1: for Tony back then, I bet you that might help
- 4:45Speaker 1: me this year. So listen to this week's episode, but
- 4:48Speaker 1: if you've got extra time, you might want to go
- 4:50Speaker 1: back and listen to one of the three previous seasons
- 4:54Speaker 1: during the same date range, and you can find other
- 4:56Speaker 1: things that could help you too, right, haven't you seen
- 4:57Speaker 1: that as well, Spencer, Yeah, definitely, And I can already
- 5:01Speaker 1: see one way that is going to be quite different,
- 5:05Speaker 1: um is how the summer weather is now affecting these
- 5:10Speaker 1: really early season haunts. For example, most of the country
- 5:14Speaker 1: had a very wet spring and summer. I know specifically
- 5:17Speaker 1: in the Great Plains it was that way. But then
- 5:19Speaker 1: I also learned through this week's interviews that some of
- 5:22Speaker 1: these other places dealt with the same thing, and it
- 5:24Speaker 1: really changed some early season tactics. Tony Peterson is a
- 5:29Speaker 1: guy that if you've listened to Wire to Hunt before
- 5:32Speaker 1: or read anything he's written, or you know, checked out
- 5:35Speaker 1: his podcast, you'll know that early season he loves to
- 5:39Speaker 1: focus on watering holes. It's a great place to pattern
- 5:43Speaker 1: a book, and it's a great place to avoid people
- 5:45Speaker 1: because everyone else kind of likes those safe field edge setups.
- 5:49Speaker 1: And this year Tony was hunting in Nebraska who we
- 5:52Speaker 1: will hear from later um, And he said there was
- 5:55Speaker 1: so much water available and everything was so wet that
- 5:57Speaker 1: that plan just went out the window and he had to,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know, change up what he was doing because those
- 6:03Speaker 1: water hole setups were not gonna work. And it was
- 6:05Speaker 1: the same thing from the guys we talked to in Tennessee,
- 6:07Speaker 1: South Carolina and in North Dakota. Yeah, so who else
- 6:11Speaker 1: are we hearing from? We start off in Tennessee with
- 6:14Speaker 1: Jacob Myers from The Southern Outdoorsman. Then in Nebraska we
- 6:17Speaker 1: talked to Tony Peterson from the Hunt for Real podcast.
- 6:20Speaker 1: In South Carolina from Cut four Outdoors is Cameron Busby,
- 6:24Speaker 1: and then in North Dakota Dylan Lens from the Breaking
- 6:27Speaker 1: Point TV. There was a ton of success from this
- 6:30Speaker 1: year's group of guys. On the first episode, Jacob Myers
- 6:33Speaker 1: in Tennessee they killed two bucks. Uh, Tony de Brat,
- 6:37Speaker 1: Tony Peterson from Nebraska, he's already on his way home
- 6:40Speaker 1: back Minnesota because him and his body both tagged out.
- 6:43Speaker 1: And then Dylan Lens in North Dakota from the Breaking
- 6:46Speaker 1: Point they killed one on opener as well. Nice awesome, Well,
- 6:51Speaker 1: I am our chronological or is gonna be a little
- 6:54Speaker 1: bit wonky here because I am in North Dakota on
- 6:56Speaker 1: my own North Dakota hunt. But the Regular Wire podcast
- 7:00Speaker 1: that comes out tomorrow was recorded before that hunt, so
- 7:03Speaker 1: I don't want to give too much away yet. Um.
- 7:06Speaker 1: The very light report is that I saw a decent
- 7:10Speaker 1: amount of activity just prior to opening day, and on
- 7:14Speaker 1: opening day there was a pretty decent amount of movement,
- 7:17Speaker 1: but it slowed down significantly after that, possibly hunting pressure
- 7:21Speaker 1: related or possibly because it got super hot. Um. That
- 7:26Speaker 1: is my very light activity report from North Dakota. Can
- 7:30Speaker 1: I Can I just leave it at that? Well, let
- 7:32Speaker 1: me know one thing, are you dealing with the same
- 7:34Speaker 1: thing as everyone else? That everything is wet and there's
- 7:37Speaker 1: plenty of water That that is not a focal point
- 7:41Speaker 1: of your early season Sits definitely not a focal point
- 7:43Speaker 1: of my sets here. Um, not so much because like
- 7:47Speaker 1: I was going to keen on water holes anyways, but
- 7:49Speaker 1: there's there's there's a river right through this area that's
- 7:52Speaker 1: providing water everywhere. Um, So that just wasn't going to
- 7:55Speaker 1: be a factor from the get go. Um, but I
- 7:58Speaker 1: can say that definitely stuff is lushed that I will
- 8:00Speaker 1: say there's there's food everywhere, seemingly a lot of green vegetation,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and that has led to deer activity being very spread out.
- 8:07Speaker 1: It doesn't seem if there's one food source that they're
- 8:09Speaker 1: keying in on. Um. There's so much natural brows that
- 8:13Speaker 1: the activity has just been kind of willy nilly um.
- 8:16Speaker 1: And maybe that had to do with it being such
- 8:18Speaker 1: a such a relatively wet summer out here compared to
- 8:21Speaker 1: other years. All right, Mark, well, I think we get
- 8:23Speaker 1: to these first colors um. And one more thing I
- 8:26Speaker 1: don't think that we spoke to was that these podcast
- 8:29Speaker 1: episodes are always going to be short. So these episodes
- 8:31Speaker 1: are gonna be around thirty minutes, super digestible. Hopefully you
- 8:34Speaker 1: can kill it on your way to work in the
- 8:36Speaker 1: morning and then that puts you in a white tail
- 8:39Speaker 1: hunting mood. Yes, and I will I will add, though,
- 8:42Speaker 1: as I sometimes do, I will drag these things longer
- 8:44Speaker 1: because I'm a rambler. So I gotta give one more
- 8:47Speaker 1: update Spencer Um. Sort of in tandem with these podcast episodes,
- 8:53Speaker 1: we also released a new video series over on the
- 8:56Speaker 1: Mediator that describes how to kill a buck during different
- 9:01Speaker 1: portions in the hunting season, and it was you, myself
- 9:04Speaker 1: and Tony Peterson. We got together and we broke down
- 9:07Speaker 1: each month into a first half in the second half,
- 9:10Speaker 1: and then discussed what our ideas would be, what our mindset,
- 9:13Speaker 1: what our tactics would be during each one of those
- 9:15Speaker 1: segments of the year. So, for example, the video that's
- 9:18Speaker 1: already come out, how to Kill a Buck September, we
- 9:21Speaker 1: went and we each shared a couple of the high
- 9:23Speaker 1: level ideas we'd be thinking about in early September one hunting,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and then we picked an example property and we dissect
- 9:29Speaker 1: that property. We look at an aerial view of the property,
- 9:31Speaker 1: all three of us and walk through where we would
- 9:34Speaker 1: consider hunting, how we would consider hunting it, each one
- 9:36Speaker 1: of us kind of sharing our own perspectives, and then
- 9:39Speaker 1: one of us actually had hunted that property, and then
- 9:42Speaker 1: that would be the last person to go. And then
- 9:44Speaker 1: we'd say, hey, you were right about this or I
- 9:45Speaker 1: saw this was very similar to what you guys are
- 9:47Speaker 1: guessing um and I think those turned out pretty interesting
- 9:50Speaker 1: and very helpful. So the first one is available on
- 9:53Speaker 1: the Meat Eater YouTube channel right now. We will have
- 9:56Speaker 1: new episodes coming every other week, right that's right, and
- 9:59Speaker 1: we are bring kicking down a variety of different properties
- 10:03Speaker 1: in these videos, public and private, from Pennsylvania to Oklahoma,
- 10:08Speaker 1: to Wisconsin, to Kentucky to Ohio and everything in between.
- 10:12Speaker 1: So hopefully if episode one talking early September and a
- 10:17Speaker 1: property in Kentucky doesn't apply to you, that one of
- 10:19Speaker 1: these next ones will. Yeah, we we We can't cover
- 10:22Speaker 1: every single region every single time, but you can definitely
- 10:25Speaker 1: still pull pieces and parts that can apply to your
- 10:28Speaker 1: own specific situation. So with that said, Spencer, uh, should
- 10:32Speaker 1: I shut it down and let you take it for
- 10:34Speaker 1: the interviews? Yeah? Good luck in North Dakota, and I
- 10:37Speaker 1: hope you're sending me a BBD tax very soon. Thanks man,
- 10:40Speaker 1: I hope so too. But before we move on, I
- 10:42Speaker 1: want to tell you guys about the biggest sale of
- 10:44Speaker 1: the year going on over at First Light for today only.

- 11:00Speaker 1: and the Marino Killing Hoodie, which is the most versatile
- 11:03Speaker 1: bass layer that I own. To take advantage of First

- 11:14Speaker 1: Don't miss out on these deals alright. And joining us
- 11:18Speaker 1: on the line first is Jacob Myers from the Southern
- 11:20Speaker 1: Outdoorsman podcast in Tennessee. Jacob in Tennessee, what would you
- 11:24Speaker 1: say the buck activity is ben lately? On a scale
- 11:26Speaker 1: of one to ten, I'd say since the Velvet buck
- 11:30Speaker 1: hunt on the twenty three, it's been probably close to
- 11:33Speaker 1: seven or eight right now, So the deer have definitely
- 11:35Speaker 1: been feeding quite a bit in the afternoon. Uh. You know,
- 11:38Speaker 1: they're still you know, kind of grouped up, so you'll
- 11:40Speaker 1: be able to go out anywhere you have eggs, especially
- 11:42Speaker 1: any kind of beans right now. Uh. You just being
- 11:45Speaker 1: able to see deer quite easily, especially if you have
- 11:47Speaker 1: advantage point where you can glass from. You're seeing deer
- 11:49Speaker 1: moving throughout the day. I know on that Velvet hunt
- 11:52Speaker 1: on when we were able to kill our deer, we
- 11:55Speaker 1: were seeing deer moving as early as four o'clock in
- 11:57Speaker 1: the afternoon, Bucks, Jacob. In most of the country and
- 12:01Speaker 1: early early openers like September one, But you guys are
- 12:04Speaker 1: hunting like seven eight nine days. And how does that
- 12:08Speaker 1: Tennessee early velvet season change from how you'd maybe be
- 12:12Speaker 1: hunting right now. Yeah, Actually I have not had previous
- 12:16Speaker 1: experience hunting that early. Uh. So Tennessee puts on a
- 12:19Speaker 1: where they classifyed they market it as a velvet buck
- 12:22Speaker 1: hunt for the whole state. It's open to private land
- 12:25Speaker 1: for the whole state. Uh. And this year it was August.
- 12:29Speaker 1: But last year they found c w D in the
- 12:32Speaker 1: western part of the state and actually made a c
- 12:34Speaker 1: w D zone and for that hunt. This year, in
- 12:37Speaker 1: that c w D zone, it was open on thirteen
- 12:41Speaker 1: pieces of publicly and track in that part of the
- 12:43Speaker 1: state in that zone, so we were able to hunt
- 12:46Speaker 1: one of those parcels of public Also, they opened it
- 12:48Speaker 1: for muzzleloader, which made it a really fun time to
- 12:51Speaker 1: go hunt. Uh. It really did change our thoughts on
- 12:54Speaker 1: hunting because we're going from you know, trying to focus
- 12:57Speaker 1: on you know, what we would think is later season
- 12:59Speaker 1: food story is down there. Uh, kind of getting away
- 13:02Speaker 1: from the egg trying to find for simmons and different oaks, UH,
- 13:05Speaker 1: to focusing strictly on agg especially soybeans. And it paid
- 13:09Speaker 1: off very quickly. We're able to shoot two deer within
- 13:12Speaker 1: twenty four hours of the hunt, and unfortunately, it wasn't
- 13:15Speaker 1: able to locate my dear because I made a non
- 13:17Speaker 1: lethal shot on that deer. But it's it's been fantastic.
- 13:20Speaker 1: It is this very different when you don't have experience
- 13:22Speaker 1: hunting that early in the season. Did you guys focus
- 13:25Speaker 1: on water at all? Hunting that early when I assumed
- 13:27Speaker 1: the weather was really hot, Actually we did not. So
- 13:31Speaker 1: this whole summer, we've had a pretty good amount of
- 13:33Speaker 1: rain in Tennessee, really the whole southeast, but over the
- 13:36Speaker 1: last month or so it's dried up just a little bit.
- 13:39Speaker 1: But where we were hunting, you know, you were still
- 13:41Speaker 1: finding you know, water pockets, you know, whether it was
- 13:43Speaker 1: you know, some puddles, a little bit of running water,
- 13:45Speaker 1: whatever it was. So you know, water wasn't a major
- 13:48Speaker 1: source of you know, finding and locating deer on that
- 13:51Speaker 1: hunt or really anytime recently late this summer, some parts
- 13:55Speaker 1: of Kentucky and Tennessee have been experiencing the h D.
- 13:58Speaker 1: Is that something that you've dealt with in in your
- 13:59Speaker 1: part of Tennessee, not necessarily in my part, but guess
- 14:03Speaker 1: there has been a few outbreaks. One County in UH
- 14:06Speaker 1: in general has had quite a few of outbreaks, which
- 14:09Speaker 1: is Hickman County, which is kind of middle Tennessee, midwestern Tennessee, UM,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and they've had quite a few outbreaks. Has been a
- 14:15Speaker 1: lot of landowners posting about finding quite a few dear dead,
- 14:19Speaker 1: which is unfortunate, but it doesn't seem like it's widespread
- 14:21Speaker 1: by no means. With that velvet season that Tennessee has,
- 14:24Speaker 1: and you can use a muzzleloader. UM that obviously allows
- 14:27Speaker 1: you to reach out and touch these deer at a
- 14:29Speaker 1: greater distance. So how do your setups look hunting with
- 14:33Speaker 1: a muzzleloader that early versus if you were bow hunting.
- 14:36Speaker 1: Funny you said that. So again, in that c w
- 14:38Speaker 1: D zone we could use muzzloaders. UH. The other part
- 14:41Speaker 1: of the state they could not. And really it kind
- 14:43Speaker 1: of did open up our mind of how we could
- 14:45Speaker 1: hunt them because in deer and velvet and agg um there,
- 14:50Speaker 1: in my experience, they're very easy to stalk up on.
- 14:52Speaker 1: And that's actually what we did for the second year.
- 14:54Speaker 1: The first year, my buddy was able to shoot it
- 14:56Speaker 1: out of his saddle, um, and you know, just to
- 14:58Speaker 1: be able to get a forty yards on his deer,
- 15:01Speaker 1: my dear, Actually we had his stock out into the
- 15:03Speaker 1: beans to get a shot at at sixty yards, which really,
- 15:07Speaker 1: you know, when the beans are so tall, you know
- 15:08Speaker 1: you're looking almost you know, you know, waist high as
- 15:11Speaker 1: taller beans. You know, you've got getting pretty close to
- 15:13Speaker 1: get a good shot at him. So that definitely did,
- 15:16Speaker 1: you know, change our way of hunting, but definitely made
- 15:19Speaker 1: it for you know, quite a fun hunting. I wish
- 15:21Speaker 1: you know, more people actually took part in that. So
- 15:23Speaker 1: Tennessee's regular deer opener still about twenty five days away
- 15:27Speaker 1: late September, So how will your tactics change when that
- 15:30Speaker 1: early when that opener comes versus what you were just hunting. Yes,
- 15:35Speaker 1: so when that season opens again, I hunt pretty much
- 15:37Speaker 1: strictly public line, and especially in Tennessee. One thing I
- 15:40Speaker 1: love to hit on early season up there is per simmons. Uh, definitely,
- 15:44Speaker 1: you know anywhere in mid to western Tennessee there's a
- 15:48Speaker 1: ton of for simmons, which is a great food source
- 15:50Speaker 1: early season, especially if you find a few tures that
- 15:53Speaker 1: are dropping or after a heavy storm has come through
- 15:55Speaker 1: and knocked a bunch to the ground, you'll absolutely find
- 15:58Speaker 1: a bunch of deer, and that's definitely and that first,
- 16:00Speaker 1: you know, four or five days of the season. It's
- 16:01Speaker 1: something I like to focus on. Unless you can find
- 16:04Speaker 1: a good being field that either was late planet that
- 16:08Speaker 1: hasn't turned yellow yet. Uh, you know, that can be
- 16:10Speaker 1: another good food source. But the problem is when you
- 16:12Speaker 1: hunt public, anytime you're around beings on public, you're gonna
- 16:15Speaker 1: have other guys there. So normally it's not uh, not
- 16:17Speaker 1: normally very efficient in my opinion, in that part of
- 16:21Speaker 1: the country. Going forward to the next week or so,
- 16:23Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 16:25Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten, I expect
- 16:28Speaker 1: once they come out of velvet, which right now they're
- 16:30Speaker 1: probably seventy five percent the deer still end velvet. I've
- 16:33Speaker 1: seen a few deer coming out, and I've got some
- 16:35Speaker 1: buddies that a run trail cameras that are seeing deer
- 16:38Speaker 1: starting to come out of velvet. But uh, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 1: as they come out of velvet and they start kind
- 16:41Speaker 1: of splitting up a little bit, I can uh normally
- 16:44Speaker 1: see them start kind of eating off those fields so much,
- 16:47Speaker 1: uh and really kind of start covering a little bit
- 16:48Speaker 1: more ground and kind of getting into their fall ranges.
- 16:52Speaker 1: So when that happens, you know a lot of guys
- 16:53Speaker 1: will start freaking out because their deer, you know, the
- 16:56Speaker 1: patterns changed. They're coming to their you know, the camera
- 16:58Speaker 1: a couple of hours later or earlier than normal, which
- 17:01Speaker 1: gives guys kind of worried. But you just gotta stay
- 17:03Speaker 1: focused and try to find that betting area where they're
- 17:05Speaker 1: located at and try moving closer to him our jacobile.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Congrats on those bucks. I'm jealous that you guys get
- 17:11Speaker 1: to start hunting so early. And thanks for joining me.
- 17:14Speaker 1: I appreciate Spencer, Thank you all right and joining us
- 17:17Speaker 1: on the line. Next is Tony Peterson in Nebraska from
- 17:20Speaker 1: the Hunt for Real podcast. Tony, on a scale of
- 17:23Speaker 1: one to ten, what would you say the buck activities
- 17:25Speaker 1: been lately? Oh? Man, I would say probably pushing up
- 17:29Speaker 1: on an eight. You were currently on the road from
- 17:31Speaker 1: Nebraska to Minnesota and you're headed home early for good reason?
- 17:35Speaker 1: Is that right? We are? Man? Uh we uh. We
- 17:39Speaker 1: got down there a couple of days before the season
- 17:41Speaker 1: open on the first to glass and scouts the public
- 17:44Speaker 1: land and uh, my buddy and I I killed one
- 17:46Speaker 1: opening night. My buddy killed on the next day, and
- 17:48Speaker 1: now we're on Eariam home. Tony, you're one of the
- 17:51Speaker 1: best public land bow hunters. I know. I said this
- 17:54Speaker 1: multiple times over and it's just proved it again. So
- 17:57Speaker 1: tell me a little bit about those setups, because I'm
- 18:00Speaker 1: really interested in how you killed big velvet bucks and
- 18:03Speaker 1: back to back nights. Sure, we uh, you know, we
- 18:08Speaker 1: we planned on hunting water because it was you know,
- 18:11Speaker 1: it was gonna be hot. It was. It was eighty
- 18:13Speaker 1: degrees when I killed my buck at ninety when he
- 18:15Speaker 1: killed his, my buddy killed his. But there was water
- 18:18Speaker 1: everywhere down there. There's been so much rain. So as
- 18:21Speaker 1: soon as we got down there and we saw the
- 18:22Speaker 1: water situation, we switched to try to find some food.
- 18:25Speaker 1: And we thought some areas that had a ton of brows,
- 18:27Speaker 1: but there was no concentrated deer activity. And then we
- 18:30Speaker 1: found one good soybean field on public land that was
- 18:33Speaker 1: a little bit of a hike to get into, and
- 18:35Speaker 1: that was the ticket. As soon as I started glassing,
- 18:38Speaker 1: and I knew we were probably gonna live and die
- 18:39Speaker 1: by that field. Now, how obvious that this soybean field
- 18:43Speaker 1: wasn't Were you competing with other hunters in that area
- 18:46Speaker 1: because it seems like a place that most public land
- 18:48Speaker 1: guys would focus on. Um, you would think. So. The
- 18:53Speaker 1: good thing about the soybean field we found was I
- 18:55Speaker 1: knew about it. I knew there was a field there
- 18:57Speaker 1: from turkey hunting in this public land the spring, but
- 19:00Speaker 1: you could barely see it from any road, and it
- 19:03Speaker 1: wasn't It wasn't as obvious as it sounds. Maybe, And
- 19:06Speaker 1: you know, we got in there early and did did
- 19:09Speaker 1: some scouting in there. We did have two guys from
- 19:11Speaker 1: Michigan pull up the night before the season opened, but
- 19:14Speaker 1: they were they were really nice guys and they said, Oh,
- 19:16Speaker 1: if you guys are in there hunt, we'll just wait.
- 19:18Speaker 1: We're gonna be down here for a while. And so
- 19:20Speaker 1: those guys, uh, they just backed off of it because
- 19:22Speaker 1: it wasn't a very big spot and they that that
- 19:25Speaker 1: was cool that they did that, because they let us
- 19:26Speaker 1: have it, and we we ended up doing really well
- 19:29Speaker 1: in there. Now, he said, ordinarily you'd be focused on water.
- 19:33Speaker 1: What kind of water hunts do you like? Like little
- 19:35Speaker 1: stock dams or wallows or creeks or river crossing what
- 19:38Speaker 1: do those look like? Um, you know, in this in
- 19:42Speaker 1: this part of Nebraska where we were at it would
- 19:44Speaker 1: have been you know, cattle tanks and little ponds out
- 19:47Speaker 1: in the pastures, you know, anything anything around, some cover,
- 19:51Speaker 1: anything where you know, the white tails like good cover.
- 19:54Speaker 1: And if we could have find something tucked away, so
- 19:56Speaker 1: I had you know, my maps were just loaded with
- 19:59Speaker 1: way points of water. But there was there was water
- 20:02Speaker 1: absolutely everywhere, and it just was totally it was just
- 20:06Speaker 1: a worthless pattern for us. It wasn't gonna happen. Were
- 20:09Speaker 1: you seeing bachelor groups still together? Were these bucks traveling solo? Um?
- 20:13Speaker 1: They were? They were bachelord up still. Um, you know,
- 20:16Speaker 1: we still probably I'd say thirty or the bucks we
- 20:20Speaker 1: saw were hard antlerd already of the rest. We were
- 20:24Speaker 1: still in velvet, and they were they were pretty grouped up,
- 20:28Speaker 1: but they were they were so concentrated in one part
- 20:30Speaker 1: of that bean field that you know, it might have
- 20:33Speaker 1: been kind of an illusion. They may have just been
- 20:35Speaker 1: feeding close by each other. But we definitely did see
- 20:38Speaker 1: some bucks that were still together. You just mentioned that
- 20:41Speaker 1: they were focused out in one corner of the bean field.
- 20:44Speaker 1: What was it about that area that got you just
- 20:47Speaker 1: set up there and got you to kill these two bucks? Um?
- 20:50Speaker 1: The corner of the bean field they were using most heavily.
- 20:53Speaker 1: Heavily butted up to the best patch of timber there
- 20:58Speaker 1: and which really isn't much the path ustard woods, but
- 21:01Speaker 1: it's the best cover, and it's the least visible spot
- 21:04Speaker 1: on the field. It kind of spilled down a little way,
- 21:06Speaker 1: so the elevation drops away, and it was just one
- 21:09Speaker 1: of those places where if you were glassing from the
- 21:12Speaker 1: other side of the field, you'd sometimes see them pop
- 21:15Speaker 1: out and go down in there, so you knew there
- 21:17Speaker 1: was something going on better there in the one place
- 21:20Speaker 1: that you couldn't really see, and I think I think
- 21:22Speaker 1: that's why they picked it. How early in the evening
- 21:25Speaker 1: were these books showing up um. Some of them were
- 21:28Speaker 1: living in it. The buck that I killed was betted
- 21:31Speaker 1: in there. When I hung my stand opening night, I
- 21:34Speaker 1: watched him get up and feed fifty yards away after
- 21:37Speaker 1: I got my stand hung, and then I watched another
- 21:39Speaker 1: bucket I had seen the previous night get up um
- 21:42Speaker 1: from inside the field. So they were you could see
- 21:45Speaker 1: when you got above these real lush, tall soybeans, you
- 21:48Speaker 1: could see all these little bomb crater looking at the
- 21:51Speaker 1: holes in the soybeans. And I think it was just
- 21:53Speaker 1: those bucks were spending so much time in there just
- 21:57Speaker 1: betting stand up feed. The bucket I killed actually ended
- 22:00Speaker 1: up bedding in front of me at thirty seven yards
- 22:02Speaker 1: for an hour, and I could see him seating while
- 22:04Speaker 1: he was laying down. Going forward to the next week
- 22:07Speaker 1: or so, what do you think that bucket ATVT is
- 22:09Speaker 1: going to be a skill of one to ten in Nebraska? Oh,
- 22:13Speaker 1: I would say with the coming forecast, I would say
- 22:16Speaker 1: it's gonna stay around a seven or eight probably. I
- 22:19Speaker 1: don't think it's going to change too drastically with all
- 22:22Speaker 1: those deer going hard anlard yet. All right, Tony, well,
- 22:24Speaker 1: congrats again, thanks for joining me. Always look forward to
- 22:27Speaker 1: hearing these public land adventures that you're on and way
- 22:30Speaker 1: to go on the awesome deer. Awesome, thanks buddy, alright
- 22:34Speaker 1: and joining us on the line. Next from South Carolina
- 22:37Speaker 1: is Cameron Busty from cut Forward Outdoors. Now, Cameron in
- 22:40Speaker 1: South Carolina, what would you say the bucket activity has
- 22:43Speaker 1: been in the last week or so on a scale
- 22:44Speaker 1: of one to ten, I'd say about a six. The
- 22:48Speaker 1: deer kind of getting into a little transition period between uh,
- 22:52Speaker 1: they're they're coming out of their summer velvet and they're
- 22:56Speaker 1: starting to get hard to him. There usually their velvet
- 22:59Speaker 1: right hair around Labor Day weekend, so we're kind of
- 23:03Speaker 1: in that transition period and we're trying to target in
- 23:06Speaker 1: on bucks for the summer patterns of the fall pattern.
- 23:09Speaker 1: So we're kind of one of these a little transitions
- 23:11Speaker 1: right now. So what would you say the ratio is
- 23:13Speaker 1: in South Carolina bucks that are still holding velvet to
- 23:16Speaker 1: ones that are hard horned. I'd say it's about hard
- 23:22Speaker 1: horn the bigger bucks right now, or they're they're a
- 23:26Speaker 1: hard horn they're usually the first ones get rid of it.
- 23:31Speaker 1: And so with these early season sits, when you're trying
- 23:34Speaker 1: to catch these bucks going from those summer patterns to
- 23:36Speaker 1: fall patterns, what are you focused on protecting? When I
- 23:40Speaker 1: started August fifteen, so August fix, they still have their
- 23:45Speaker 1: bilment on. They're pretty pretty consistent, so you can get
- 23:49Speaker 1: on the food tourse early. UM your field agg fields
- 23:53Speaker 1: we had We've had some success in big fresh cutovers
- 23:57Speaker 1: um a lot of regrowth out there, especially in the morning,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and those big cutovers seemed to play the big cutovers
- 24:02Speaker 1: off the egg fields and staging aary for them to
- 24:04Speaker 1: come back to bed. They'll hang out there and mill
- 24:06Speaker 1: out there and after her in the morning, they're coming
- 24:08Speaker 1: from food back to bed. What we did augustly the
- 24:11Speaker 1: te um August eight tenths, you're killed the monster, I
- 24:16Speaker 1: mean heavy warned eight pointer Um in a cutover just
- 24:21Speaker 1: like that in the morning. Um. But right now we're
- 24:23Speaker 1: gonna start getting on some transition lines. UM. Food still primary,
- 24:30Speaker 1: especially in the afternoons, because they're still kind of comfortable.
- 24:32Speaker 1: They're not really getting too much pressure right now. We're
- 24:35Speaker 1: trying to stay out and not really bumping too hard
- 24:38Speaker 1: on the food. You mentioned that some of those caught
- 24:41Speaker 1: areas kind of function as staging areas in the mornings.
- 24:44Speaker 1: Does that mean that you've been doing some morning setups
- 24:46Speaker 1: this early in the season. Yes, actually we have. Actually
- 24:50Speaker 1: those have been most of our setups. Um. The farm
- 24:53Speaker 1: we hunt, it doesn't have egg The egg field is
- 24:56Speaker 1: not on the property. It's about um half mile the road.
- 25:00Speaker 1: So the deer are going to the hagfield tonight, but
- 25:04Speaker 1: we can't haunt the agg field. So we're catching them
- 25:07Speaker 1: coming back and they're using our cut over. It's a
- 25:11Speaker 1: two year old cut over. They cut it last year
- 25:13Speaker 1: and it's got vegetation that's probably nick highing and if
- 25:17Speaker 1: you get up on the edge of it and get
- 25:18Speaker 1: get high enough, and they're using that. I mean, we've
- 25:23Speaker 1: had an agatack days down here, so we're catching them
- 25:27Speaker 1: coming back to bed up the Creek games now coming
- 25:31Speaker 1: up here at the end of the week. It seems
- 25:33Speaker 1: like Hurricane Dorian maybe making contact with South Carolina. Do
- 25:37Speaker 1: you ever notice in the past that hurricanes affect the
- 25:40Speaker 1: deer movement before after hurricane and what does that look like?
- 25:44Speaker 1: Dorian is gonna be a little farther to our east
- 25:48Speaker 1: and more towards the coast. Were actually towards the center
- 25:50Speaker 1: of the state. But we've had hurries in the post
- 25:53Speaker 1: come come through and we've actually noticed buck moving right
- 25:59Speaker 1: before the storm. Or two years ago, we killed a
- 26:02Speaker 1: really really big eight pointer the day before hurricane came
- 26:06Speaker 1: and he learned he was up in October moving at
- 26:10Speaker 1: five o'clock in the afternoon. I mean, just something you
- 26:13Speaker 1: don't see, very rare, and there's a buck. We only
- 26:15Speaker 1: had a couple of pictures last year one of our
- 26:18Speaker 1: members because in North Carolina, you know, they had that
- 26:21Speaker 1: major storm I forget what the name of it was.
- 26:23Speaker 1: They came through last year. And he was hunting hadn't
- 26:27Speaker 1: had one huge I mean probably a hundred and sixty
- 26:30Speaker 1: five inch in North Carolina out in the bean fields
- 26:33Speaker 1: right in the middle of afternoon. Even so, I feel
- 26:35Speaker 1: like they know the storm is coming and it puts
- 26:39Speaker 1: up because they know the next days are going to
- 26:41Speaker 1: be bad going forward. Then in the sex week or so,
- 26:43Speaker 1: what do you think that bucket activity is going to
- 26:45Speaker 1: be on a scale of one to ten in South Carolina?
- 26:48Speaker 1: I feel like it's gonna pick up and probably be
- 26:51Speaker 1: about seven and I have eight before the storm. During
- 26:54Speaker 1: the storm, it could drop back to a three or four,
- 26:57Speaker 1: and then right after it should should get back to
- 27:00Speaker 1: about normal, so about five or six. I mean, it
- 27:04Speaker 1: could vary through out the week with the storm coming there. Alright, Cameron, well,
- 27:07Speaker 1: thanks for joining me and good luck to you and
- 27:08Speaker 1: everyone else from Cut four Outdoors. Thank you alright and
- 27:13Speaker 1: joining us on the line. Next is Dylan Lens out
- 27:16Speaker 1: of North Dakota from Breaking Point TV. Dylan, on a
- 27:19Speaker 1: scale of one to tendon, what would you say the
- 27:21Speaker 1: buck activity has been lately? I would say it's about
- 27:23Speaker 1: a six right now. Um, we had some warm weather
- 27:27Speaker 1: while we were out hunting through the opener of this
- 27:29Speaker 1: past weekend and started off strong with some high pressure.
- 27:33Speaker 1: We had some good buck movement and then it really
- 27:34Speaker 1: tailed off. Is that weather stabilized and uh, I didn't
- 27:38Speaker 1: have much daylight activity for bucks at once. That kind
- 27:42Speaker 1: of settled out. Someone in your group did have success though.
- 27:46Speaker 1: On was it opening night there in North Dakota? Opening night?
- 27:49Speaker 1: Are buddy and in script checked or JP as we
- 27:53Speaker 1: call him, uh took out an awesome velvet stuck on
- 27:57Speaker 1: opening night UM with quite a bit of daylight left,
- 28:01Speaker 1: so he was he was pretty fortunate to be in
- 28:02Speaker 1: the right place at the right time out there, and
- 28:04Speaker 1: I believe does this first of velvet white scales. So
- 28:06Speaker 1: it was a pretty awesome night. And what do those
- 28:09Speaker 1: setups look like that you guys were using. Was it
- 28:11Speaker 1: mostly field edgies. Yeah, it's almost all feel edges that
- 28:14Speaker 1: were hunting out there on North Dakota's a lot of
- 28:16Speaker 1: big marshes um where you can't really get in and
- 28:20Speaker 1: get on it. Didn't you know, access point to you know,
- 28:23Speaker 1: set up an ambush. So he kind of gotta pick
- 28:25Speaker 1: tree rows or small wood lots where we think we
- 28:28Speaker 1: can get the beer. Um while they're headed to food,
- 28:31Speaker 1: you know, leaving the big marshes and kind of in
- 28:34Speaker 1: a vulnerable spot. Tell me more about that buck that
- 28:37Speaker 1: your buddy killed. How early was that deer out moving?
- 28:39Speaker 1: Was he traveling with others? So he was actually coming
- 28:42Speaker 1: behind two doughs, Um, it was kind of a different situation.
- 28:45Speaker 1: He had crossed the road and a car had come
- 28:48Speaker 1: past right about when they crossed the road, so kind
- 28:51Speaker 1: of hurried that buck up, um coming towards the tree
- 28:54Speaker 1: line that he was sitting on, and he basically followed
- 28:57Speaker 1: the dosh down the trail and straight as to stand.
- 29:00Speaker 1: So it just worked out perfect. That was I believe
- 29:04Speaker 1: with another hour hour and a half of daylight left.
- 29:06Speaker 1: So it's really fortunate to have that movement that early.
- 29:09Speaker 1: You guys had a really short window there in North Dakota,
- 29:12Speaker 1: because I know a few years took off and are
- 29:14Speaker 1: now haunting Muley's when the window is that tight. Are
- 29:18Speaker 1: you hunting any mornings early in the season like this?
- 29:21Speaker 1: We truly don't hunt mornings in North Dakota just because
- 29:25Speaker 1: of our stand setups. Um, you know, we went in there,
- 29:28Speaker 1: we'd definitely be pushing dear off for food and we
- 29:32Speaker 1: aren't hunting betting areas, because like I said, you know,
- 29:34Speaker 1: they're betting out in the marches and that sort of thing.
- 29:36Speaker 1: So if we're going in the morning, we pretty much
- 29:38Speaker 1: blow the whole sit right off the bat. So kind
- 29:41Speaker 1: of getting out there where we think that deer headed to,
- 29:44Speaker 1: are in between where they're headed to and their betting
- 29:47Speaker 1: has worked out best for us. That's always happening in
- 29:49Speaker 1: the keeping. What was the ratio of velvet bucks to
- 29:52Speaker 1: hard worn bucks there in North Dakota while we were
- 29:55Speaker 1: out there this patch weekend, it was almost all still velvet.
- 29:59Speaker 1: We had one buck that was full hearted horns, had
- 30:02Speaker 1: some awesome horners of him actually uh right before he
- 30:06Speaker 1: lost his velvet and then he must have you know,
- 30:08Speaker 1: went and shredded it right nearby. And that was actually
- 30:10Speaker 1: in August, so that was pretty early. Um, but all
- 30:14Speaker 1: the other year that we had on camera or saw
- 30:17Speaker 1: while we were in the stand, we're still holding velvet.
- 30:20Speaker 1: So that was pretty cool. Had those opportunities while we
- 30:22Speaker 1: were there on those velvet buckets. Are you guys worried
- 30:25Speaker 1: about water sources all this time of year? Is that
- 30:27Speaker 1: something that you focus on just like you would these
- 30:29Speaker 1: food sources. How were we hunt in North Dakota. It's
- 30:32Speaker 1: so wet anyway, with all the marshes that first wet
- 30:36Speaker 1: of the years it's been out there, we haven't noticed
- 30:38Speaker 1: a heck of a lot of difference in you know,
- 30:40Speaker 1: their activity um pertaining to water. So I don't know,
- 30:45Speaker 1: you know, if you were in a drier area, maybe
- 30:47Speaker 1: it's be a little bit different because of how much
- 30:49Speaker 1: water is available to him this year. But we just
- 30:51Speaker 1: didn't notice that kind of you know change. I know,
- 30:54Speaker 1: you guys are potentially hitted back to North Dakota like
- 30:57Speaker 1: next week or so, how will your actors have changed
- 31:01Speaker 1: from just a few days ago to about seven days
- 31:03Speaker 1: from now. During the early season, we pretty much kind
- 31:06Speaker 1: of employed the same tactics and you know, really just
- 31:09Speaker 1: checking the cameras and trying to stay out of air
- 31:11Speaker 1: as much as possible, keeping them fresh, sneaking in during
- 31:15Speaker 1: broad daylight middle of the day when we know we
- 31:17Speaker 1: can get in there those deer in the marshes, they're
- 31:19Speaker 1: gonna see yea, We go in check the camera see
- 31:21Speaker 1: if they were in that area either you know, before
- 31:24Speaker 1: dark the night before or maybe move through on their
- 31:27Speaker 1: way back into bed in the morning. And then we
- 31:29Speaker 1: just try and pick that spot and play the wind
- 31:32Speaker 1: and hope that they're going to make that mistake again
- 31:34Speaker 1: or show up during daylight. Going forward. Then in the
- 31:36Speaker 1: six week or so, what do you think that bucket
- 31:38Speaker 1: activity is going to be on a scale of one
- 31:40Speaker 1: to ten in North Dakota. I would say it's still
- 31:43Speaker 1: going to be that six maybe seven area. It's really
- 31:46Speaker 1: gonna depend on the weather. I haven't looked at the
- 31:48Speaker 1: expended forecast, but you know, if we get a little
- 31:51Speaker 1: bit of cool front um and some higher pressure, I
- 31:54Speaker 1: think maybe those bucks will get on their feet a
- 31:56Speaker 1: little earlier. Our Dylan, thanks for joining me, good luck
- 31:58Speaker 1: on the rest of your traveling haunts and everyone else
- 32:00Speaker 1: from the Breaking Point TV. Thanks a lot you guys.
- 32:03Speaker 1: Good must as well, and that concludes this week's episode
- 32:07Speaker 1: of Wired Haunts rout Fresh Radio. Thanks to Jacob, Tony Cameron,
- 32:12Speaker 1: and Dylan for joining me, and thank you guys for listening.

- 32:33Speaker 1: four of rout Fresh Radio. Until next time, stay wired
