- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Tuesday, it's the 25th of
- 0:16February and you have tapped on play because it is time,
- 0:20friends, time for us to sit down, open up God's word and
- 0:25read another chapter together. This is a chapter that, oh,
- 0:30it's, it's not pretty. This is a chapter where God says
- 0:34the reason things don't go well for you kings and your nations
- 0:37is because you continually turn your back on me.
- 0:40And if you open up your Old Testament and read the prophets
- 0:45of Amos and Hosea, this is the situation.
- 0:48This is the part of the history of Israel and Judah that they
- 0:52speak into. So it is a time when God called
- 0:55his prophets to speak up and say, listen, you are not going
- 1:00the way I want you to. And oh, if only history could
- 1:04tell us that things change. And the king said, oh, oh, silly
- 1:08us, I'm sorry, Lord, you've given me everything.
- 1:11Why don't I just follow you? No, alas, it is not to be.
- 1:15And things will go not so well, particularly this week as we
- 1:19read for Israel in the north, as the nation of Assyria will grow
- 1:23in its power. And all will not be well for
- 1:26Israel. But we'll get to that in the
- 1:28next few days. But for now, let us settle back
- 1:32and hear this part of the story as we read together.
- 1:35Second Kings, chapter 14. Amaziah, son of Joash, began to
- 1:50rule over Judah in the second year of the reign of King
- 1:54Jehoash of Israel. Amaziah was 25 years old when he
- 1:59became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem 29 years.
- 2:03His mother was Jehoidin from Jerusalem.
- 2:07Amaziah did what was pleasing in the Lord's sight, but not like
- 2:11his ancestor David. Instead, he followed the example
- 2:15of his father Joash. Amaziah did not destroy the
- 2:18Pagan shrines, and the people still offered sacrifices and
- 2:22burned incense there. When Amaziah was well
- 2:26established as king, he executed the officials who had
- 2:30assassinated his father. However, he did not kill the
- 2:33children of the assassins, for he obeyed the command of the
- 2:36Lord as written by Moses in the Book of the Law.
- 2:40Parents must not be put to death for the sins of their children,
- 2:44nor children for the sins of their parents.
- 2:47Those deserving to die must be put to death for their own
- 2:50crimes. Amaziah also killed 10,000
- 2:54Edomites in the Valley of Salt. He also conquered Sailor and
- 2:58changed its name to Jokthiel, as it is called to this day.
- 3:04One day Amaziah sent messages with this challenge to Israel's
- 3:08king. Jehoash, the son of Jehovah has
- 3:11and grandson of Jehu. Come and meet me in battle.
- 3:17But King Jehoash of Israel replied to King Amaziah of Judah
- 3:21with this story. Out in the Lebanon mountains, a
- 3:25Thistle sent a message to a mighty cedar tree.
- 3:28Give your daughter and marriage to my son.
- 3:32But just then a wild animal of Lebanon came by and stepped on
- 3:36the Thistle, crushing it. You have indeed defeated Edom
- 3:41and you are proud of it, but be content with your victory and
- 3:45stay at home. Why stir up trouble that will
- 3:47only Bing disaster on you and the people of Judah?
- 3:51But Amaziah refused to listen. So King Jehoash of Israel
- 3:56mobilised his army against King Amaziah of Judah.
- 4:00The two armies drew up their battle lines at Beth Shemesh in
- 4:04Judah. Judah was routed by the army of
- 4:07Israel and it's army scattered and fled for home.
- 4:11King Jehovah of Israel captured Judas King, a Messiah, son of
- 4:15Joash and grandson of Aiziah, at Bethshemesh.
- 4:20Then he marched to Jerusalem and demolished 600 feet of
- 4:24Jerusalem's wall from the Ephraim gate to the corner gate.
- 4:29He carried off all the gold and silver and all the articles from
- 4:33the temple of the Lord. He also seized the treasures
- 4:36from the royal palace along with hostages, and then returned to
- 4:40Samaria. The rest of the events in
- 4:44Jehoash's reign and everything he did, including the extent of
- 4:47his power and his war with King Amaziah of Judah, are recorded
- 4:52in the Book of the History of the Kings of Israel.
- 4:56When Jehoash died, he was buried in Samaria with the kings of
- 5:00Israel, and his son Jeroboam the Second became the next king.
- 5:05King Amaziah of Judah lived for 15 years after the death of King
- 5:09Jehoiah of Israel. The rest of the events of
- 5:13Amaziah's reign are recorded in the Book of the History of the
- 5:17Kings of Judah. There was a conspiracy against
- 5:21Amaziah's life in Jerusalem and he fled to Lakish, but his
- 5:25enemies sent assassins after him and they killed him there.
- 5:30They brought his body back to Jerusalem on a horse and he was
- 5:34buried with his ancestors in the city of David.
- 5:37All the people of Judah had crowned Amaziah's 16 year old
- 5:41son Uzziah as king in place of his father Amaziah.
- 5:46After his father's death, Uzziah rebuilt the town of Ilath and
- 5:50restored it to Judah. Jeroboam the Second, the son of
- 5:55Jehoash, began to rule over Israel in the 15th year of King
- 5:59Amaziah's reign in Judah. He reigned in Samaria 41 years.
- 6:05He did what was evil in the Lord's sight.
- 6:08He refused to turn from the sins that Jeroboam son of Nebat had
- 6:13LED Israel to commit. Jeroboam the Second recovered
- 6:17the territories of Israel between Libo, Hamath and the
- 6:20Dead Sea, just as the Lord, the God of Israel, had promised
- 6:25through Jonah son of Amitai, the prophet from Gathefa.
- 6:30For the Lord saw the bitter suffering of everyone in Israel,
- 6:34and that there was no one in Israel, slave or free, to help
- 6:38them. And because the Lord had not
- 6:40said He would blot out the name of Israel completely, he used
- 6:44Jeroboam the Second, the son of Jehoash, to save them.
- 6:49The rest of the events in the reign of Jeroboam the Second and
- 6:52everything he did, including the extent of his power, his wars,
- 6:57and how he recovered for Israel, both Damascus and Hamath which
- 7:01had belonged to Judah are recorded in the Book of the
- 7:05History of the Kings of Israel. When Jeroboam two died, he was
- 7:10buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel.
- 7:13Then his son Zechariah became the next king.
- 7:25Ah Lord, we can get just so tied up in our day to day life that
- 7:31we forget that you walk beside us and that you guide our hands
- 7:36and you have a keen interest not just in the overarching events
- 7:42of the world, but in our daily life and routine.
- 7:46Lord, as we see that you walked with both of those nations, with
- 7:51all your people, we know that you walk with us today.
- 7:56Lord, whatever challenges we face today, help us know that we
- 8:00never face them alone. And as our heart needs to decide
- 8:05to whom it swears allegiance, Lord, may that always be you.
- 8:10And the temptations to place other things above you would be
- 8:14quelled and that we would remain true to you.
- 8:18Our Lord, we love you and we want to continue to place you at
- 8:22the highest place in our lives, purify our hearts, shape our
- 8:27minds, and draw US ever into your warm embrace.
- 8:32Our loving, patient, merciful God, ah, we adore you and we
- 8:40worship you. And we pray all of this in the
- 8:43name of Jesus, Amen.
