- 0:00Speaker 1: And the former world boxing champion Anthony Joshua has announced
- 0:03Speaker 1: his next fight against the social media star turned boxer
- 0:07Speaker 1: Jake Paul in a sanctioned heavyweight about next month. So
- 0:10Speaker 1: Joshua's last fight saw him lose to Daniel Dubois. The
- 0:14Speaker 1: upcoming match in Miami will be the biggest test of
- 0:17Speaker 1: Jake Paul's career, whose highest profile victory was against Mike Tyson,
- 0:22Speaker 1: who is fifty eight last year. Let's get more now
- 0:25Speaker 1: on this with former professional boxer David Hay himself a
- 0:28Speaker 1: former heavyweight champion. David really good to talk to you
- 0:31Speaker 1: today and get your thoughts on this. So this is
- 0:33Speaker 1: a big money fight, one hundred million pounds potentially. Are
- 0:37Speaker 1: you confident it'll happen?
- 0:40Speaker 2: I wasn't confident when I first heard about it.
- 0:42Speaker 3: It sounds like one of those fairy tale fights that
- 0:44Speaker 3: people talk about but don't actually go over the line.
- 0:47Speaker 3: I heard this three four months ago, I just dismissed it.
- 0:51Speaker 3: I heard it a week ago. I went along with
- 0:55Speaker 3: it by deep down I thought this isn't going to happen.
- 0:57Speaker 3: And today it's been made official. Paul is going to
- 1:01Speaker 3: get in a ring in a boxing match. Boxing gloves
- 1:04Speaker 3: to mix it with one of the most dangerous heavyweights
- 1:07Speaker 3: on the planet, someone who has Olympic gold medalist, won
- 1:11Speaker 3: the heavyweight championship twice, although he lost his last fight
- 1:14Speaker 3: against a very good Daniel Dubois.
- 1:16Speaker 2: He's a top ten heavyweight on the planet.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Versus Internet sensation, someone who's a late comer to boxing
- 1:26Speaker 3: and has boxed at a very moderate level. I'm talking
- 1:29Speaker 3: domestic level, and he lost to Tommy Fury for instance,
- 1:35Speaker 3: and Tommy Fury who he lost to, Versus Anti Joshua.
- 1:38Speaker 2: They're two completely different sports.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So I commend Jake Paul for putting himself in harm's
- 1:45Speaker 3: way because boxing is a dangerous game. People have died
- 1:47Speaker 3: in the ring, people have been seriously injured maimed, and
- 1:52Speaker 3: he believes in himself enough to do it on a
- 1:54Speaker 3: massive scale because it's not about the money.
- 1:57Speaker 2: He's got enough money.
- 1:58Speaker 3: This is him wanting to push the boundaries of reality.
- 2:02Speaker 3: He's manifested an amazing life for himself. He's a superstar,
- 2:06Speaker 3: and I think he wants to try and do the
- 2:08Speaker 3: unthinkable that you know he wants to this is it's
- 2:11Speaker 3: an insane challenge.
- 2:12Speaker 2: He's put himself up more but you've got to give
- 2:14Speaker 2: him credit.
- 2:16Speaker 1: You're say an insane challenge. You've described it before as
- 2:18Speaker 1: Jake Paul being a cat versus Anthony Joshua's lion. I mean,
- 2:24Speaker 1: they're not equally matched on any sense, are they.
- 2:27Speaker 3: There's not one element of their boxing skill set that
- 2:32Speaker 3: Jake Paul can come fifteen to twenty percent in regards
- 2:37Speaker 3: to Anti Joshua. He's a completely different specimen. You'll see
- 2:41Speaker 3: what it looks like when they stand next to each other.
- 2:44Speaker 3: And Anti Joshua is not a bodybuilder. You know, he's
- 2:47Speaker 3: a prime athlete. He's someone who's dedicated his life to this.
- 2:50Speaker 3: He lives to it. He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke. He's
- 2:54Speaker 3: a real clean athlete who is going to inflict some
- 2:57Speaker 3: horrendous damage to Jake Paul.
- 3:00Speaker 2: And I hope we've got a referee in there.
- 3:02Speaker 3: Who's quite compassionate, because if Jake Paul is left you
- 3:07Speaker 3: up against the ropes of Anthony Joshua unloading on him,
- 3:12Speaker 3: it could be the end for him.
- 3:13Speaker 2: Literally, it could be his last day on earth.
- 3:16Speaker 1: I mean, if if you fear that they are this mismatch,
- 3:19Speaker 1: do you think the fight should really go ahead? If
- 3:22Speaker 1: you're fearing for Jake Paul's life.
- 3:24Speaker 3: In reality, it shouldn't go ahead. It shouldn't go ahead.
- 3:28Speaker 3: There's no there's no reason for it too. If you're
- 3:30Speaker 3: a commission and your job is to look after the fighters,
- 3:34Speaker 3: make sure their medicals are good, make sure this guy
- 3:36Speaker 3: is fit to fight this guy. This guy is not
- 3:39Speaker 3: much bigger than this guy. The reason why they're there
- 3:42Speaker 3: is so the fighters are protected. But in this in
- 3:45Speaker 3: this situation, Jake Paul is so valuable to the whole
- 3:49Speaker 3: infrastructure of boxing. Everybody involved is going to earn five
- 3:53Speaker 3: to ten times more than it would do on any
- 3:55Speaker 3: other night of their life.
- 3:56Speaker 2: So everybody's involved.
- 3:58Speaker 3: But at the end of the day, Ja Paul, as
- 4:00Speaker 3: you can see here, he's a good boxer.
- 4:02Speaker 2: I'm not saying he's a terrible boxer.
- 4:04Speaker 3: It's the equivalent of one hundred meter race and Anti
- 4:08Speaker 3: Joshua's is runs around ten seconds and Jake Paul's done
- 4:11Speaker 3: twelve twelve and a half seconds. The chances of Jake
- 4:15Speaker 3: winning that race unless something dramatically terrible happens to Anti
- 4:19Speaker 3: Joshuy breaks his leg on the way to the ring.
- 4:21Speaker 2: You know, I can't see any.
- 4:23Speaker 3: Version of reality where Jake Paul somehow finds a way
- 4:27Speaker 3: to win one round, let alone win the fight. You know,
- 4:31Speaker 3: if there's a one minute section of the fight that
- 4:33Speaker 3: Jake Paul does better than Anti Joshuin, that's a win
- 4:37Speaker 3: for Jake Paul. But that could be quickly over rid
- 4:41Speaker 3: by the damage that's going to be inflicted to him.
- 4:44Speaker 3: Box is a dangerous, dangerous game. Your brain isn't supposed
- 4:47Speaker 3: to rattle around in your head, particularly the way it's
- 4:50Speaker 3: going to for Jake Paul. When Anti Joshua starts letting
- 4:52Speaker 3: those punches fly. It's going to be brutal.
- 4:55Speaker 2: It's going to be. Yeah.
- 4:57Speaker 3: I hope they've got some real good paramedics close by
- 5:01Speaker 3: because it's it could be it could be that bad.
- 5:04Speaker 1: I mean, we know Anthony Joshua's history, and we know
- 5:07Speaker 1: the level that he boxes out, but he has been
- 5:08Speaker 1: out of the ring for fourteen months. I mean, what
- 5:10Speaker 1: do we know about his current form.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Anti Joshua could have been in a coma for the
- 5:14Speaker 3: last five years. He would have got over to woke
- 5:16Speaker 3: up out of bed, and he would win this fight.
- 5:19Speaker 3: He's it's completely he's two completely different specimens in there.
- 5:23Speaker 3: You know, I respect Jake Paul, and I don't want
- 5:25Speaker 3: to demean him or belittle him. I really respect what
- 5:29Speaker 3: he's done and what he's putting his body into. But
- 5:32Speaker 3: the reality is this is a is a bridge way
- 5:35Speaker 3: too far. And I know he's done some who would
- 5:37Speaker 3: have who would have thought he would have coming from
- 5:39Speaker 3: humble beginnings, he would have somehow made himself a megastar.
- 5:43Speaker 2: But he's done it. He's found a way.
- 5:45Speaker 3: To create businesses, and he's done some amazing things in
- 5:49Speaker 3: his life.
- 5:49Speaker 2: But this is just too far.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But I respect, I respected heart to want to put
- 5:54Speaker 3: his body in a position where it could be not
- 5:57Speaker 3: function as it should.
- 5:58Speaker 1: Afterwards, and briefly, David, what do you feel about about
- 6:02Speaker 1: people like Jake Paul coming into boxing, as you say,
- 6:05Speaker 1: manifesting how he is got here, not coming through the
- 6:09Speaker 1: traditional circuit that the boxes like Anthony Joshua have.
- 6:12Speaker 3: I think it's actually the best thing that's happened to
- 6:14Speaker 3: boxing in the last fifty years. I think the fact
- 6:17Speaker 3: that these KSI Jake Paul, Logan Paul, these big massive
- 6:22Speaker 3: Internet personalities decided that they want to get involved in
- 6:27Speaker 3: boxing and box each other. What that does is brings million,
- 6:31Speaker 3: hundreds of millions of kids from around the world who
- 6:33Speaker 3: would have been interested in boxing, all of a sudden,
- 6:35Speaker 3: they're tuning in for a boxing match. Maybe they want
- 6:37Speaker 3: to be like Jake Paul. Maybe they want to go
- 6:39Speaker 3: to their amateur boxing club and learn to box and
- 6:42Speaker 3: be a boxer like him. So I think it's fantastic
- 6:44Speaker 3: for the grassroots of boxing. Is the financial element of it,
- 6:48Speaker 3: because you remember on the undercard there will be fighters
- 6:52Speaker 3: earning career high paydays off the strength of this event.
- 6:55Speaker 3: The whole boxing community is financially stimulated as a direct
- 6:59Speaker 3: result of these YouTube boxers. So I'm all for it,
- 7:03Speaker 3: but I think maybe this is where it goes a
- 7:05Speaker 3: little too far. You know, I don't want to see
- 7:06Speaker 3: anybody get hurt. You know, Jake Paul getting seriously injured
- 7:10Speaker 3: in this fight isn't good for boxing, although it might
- 7:12Speaker 3: get great ratings. You know, safety should be paramount, and
- 7:17Speaker 3: unfortunately for him, he's voluntarily walking into a situation where
- 7:22Speaker 3: I can't see any way out of it.
- 7:25Speaker 2: Conscious.
- 7:26Speaker 1: David Hay, really interesting to talk to you today. Thank
- 7:29Speaker 1: you so much.
