- 0:07Speaker 3: The world's original podcast. Welcome to Patriots Unfiltered, presented by Toyota.com.
- 0:21Speaker 2: I kind of like short weeks.
- 0:22Speaker 4: The amount of cramming that, like, obviously no one.
- 0:25Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. Like, I don't matter.
- 0:27Speaker 5: Is there a test? So with Brendan Schooler back, is
- 0:30Speaker 5: Oklahoma in play? You mean the Longhorn package? Is that
- 0:32Speaker 5: what it is?
- 0:33Speaker 2: Like, that's not just a fine.
- 0:34Speaker 6: No.
- 0:34Speaker 2: He's losing a game check.
- 0:35Speaker 7: Yep.
- 0:36Speaker 5: Yep. Well, he should. Animals.
- 0:38Speaker 2: Well, have you ever spit at anybody in your life?
- 0:40Speaker 5: I have. Oh. When I was a kid. Yeah, when
- 0:42Speaker 5: I was a kid. Back in my day, you know.
- 0:45Speaker 5: Crap like that happened on the schoolyard all the time.
- 0:47Speaker 5: On the schoolyard. That's where things were settled.
- 0:49Speaker 2: Frontier justice.
- 0:51Speaker 5: If we were doing the old Dan Shaughnessy head-to-head matchup,
- 0:54Speaker 5: you know, clam chowder versus deep dish pizza, you know,
- 0:57Speaker 5: clam chowder. Would you pay to listen to Kyle Shanahan? Yes.
- 1:00Speaker 2: Would you pay to listen to Ben Johnson?
- 1:02Speaker 8: Can I expense it?
- 1:03Speaker 2: This is Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Presented by Toyota.com. Patriots Unfiltered.
- 1:09Speaker 5: All right, welcome to Patriots Unfiltered. It is Tuesday here
- 1:13Speaker 5: at Gillette Stadium. It seems like a long time since
- 1:17Speaker 5: the Patriots played. A lot has happened in between. But
- 1:20Speaker 5: we're going to talk. We'll go back a little bit
- 1:22Speaker 5: and talk about that Chicago game. And then, Paul, your
- 1:25Speaker 5: friends in Stripes had a really good weekend. I'm sure
- 1:28Speaker 5: you have a lot to talk about there.
- 1:30Speaker 2: They're on fire.
- 1:31Speaker 5: Oh, my God. Even I was upset. It's Evan. It's Paul.
- 1:34Speaker 5: It's me. It's Deuce. It's Matt in the booth.
- 1:36Speaker 2: I was tweeting about it before it even got egregious.
- 1:39Speaker 8: Don't get in trouble like the head coach.
- 1:40Speaker 5: I know. Careful.
- 1:42Speaker 2: Don't get fined.
- 1:42Speaker 5: I'm not even talking about our game. I'm talking about us.
- 1:45Speaker 5: games on Sunday.
- 1:45Speaker 2: My game was uneventful.
- 1:46Speaker 5: Yeah, comparatively. I think Will Campbell got screwed. But anyway,
- 1:51Speaker 5: all right. Let's talk Patriots football. What? Nothing. Okay.
- 1:59Speaker 9: I am curious because we haven't, even though it's been
- 2:02Speaker 9: a few days, I haven't got a chance to hear
- 2:04Speaker 9: from you and from Evan thoughts on the game. You know,
- 2:07Speaker 9: Mike and I emptied the notebook for two hours post-game.
- 2:10Speaker 2: Oh, yeah.
- 2:11Speaker 5: No, I mean... Broke it down.
- 2:13Speaker 2: We did. Broke it down. I think I think I
- 2:15Speaker 2: might have taken a nap in the middle of the postgame.
- 2:17Speaker 5: You said it on the postgame show, Paul. If you're
- 2:19Speaker 5: going to lose a game, this is the game. On
- 2:20Speaker 5: the road, banged up Thursday night. That's the one you
- 2:24Speaker 5: circled and said, this is the game to lose. Obviously,
- 2:28Speaker 5: the Patriots had a chance to win the game, but
- 2:30Speaker 5: I just think they didn't have enough that night. Everyone says, oh, well,
- 2:38Speaker 5: the Drake May interceptions. Well, I think that was negated
- 2:41Speaker 5: by the Ramondre Stevenson crazy touchdown at the end of
- 2:44Speaker 5: the half.
- 2:45Speaker 2: They were fortunate to have a chance at the end
- 2:47Speaker 2: of the game.
- 2:48Speaker 5: Right.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And, you know, they ultimately fell short.
- 2:51Speaker 5: Yeah. So I'm not, you know, I wasn't losing any
- 2:55Speaker 5: sleep from that game. I hope we play him again
- 2:59Speaker 5: this year. You know what that means, right?
- 3:03Speaker 2: No, I'm unfamiliar with it. It'll be in the postseason.
- 3:06Speaker 5: And only one game in the postseason.
- 3:08Speaker 2: Right. Probably the Super Bowl. They still do that third
- 3:10Speaker 2: place thing now?
- 3:11Speaker 7: Right.
- 3:12Speaker 9: Now, that would be, I mean, I would say the
- 3:14Speaker 9: one thing that I came away with from a big
- 3:17Speaker 9: pitcher standpoint, forget about the Patriots and the Bears, just
- 3:20Speaker 9: the NFL's got to be thrilled to have these two
- 3:22Speaker 9: young guys go head-to-head in prime time and both play,
- 3:25Speaker 9: you know, I mean, I thought Caleb Williams was really good.
- 3:28Speaker 9: Drake May made, obviously, a big mistake, but he was
- 3:32Speaker 9: really good in the third quarter, man, in that drive. Ev,
- 3:36Speaker 9: I want to get your thoughts on this. I call
- 3:37Speaker 9: the third quarter touchdown drive the best drive of Drake
- 3:40Speaker 9: May's career.
- 3:41Speaker 8: Deuce told me that.
- 3:42Speaker 2: Yeah. And I've been getting mocked about it ever since.
- 3:46Speaker 2: I think.
- 3:47Speaker 8: Well, tell.
- 3:47Speaker 5: Why?
- 3:48Speaker 2: I just thought it was basically all... It'd be one thing.
- 3:52Speaker 9: If he just, like, dropped back and threw one of
- 3:54Speaker 9: those perfect 50-yard bombs, you know, dropped it right in
- 3:57Speaker 9: the bucket, which we've seen him do many times. This
- 4:00Speaker 9: was play after play after play.
- 4:01Speaker 2: The pressure's coming. It gets there. He knows where it's
- 4:04Speaker 2: coming from.
- 4:04Speaker 9: He avoids it, and then just makes the right play,
- 4:07Speaker 9: like hits Hunter Henry or hits, you know, Ramondre. Whoever,
- 4:10Speaker 9: you know, nothing, like, nothing that really stood out specifically,
- 4:16Speaker 9: but I thought almost every play... was him, like, just
- 4:20Speaker 9: making a play. He was being him on that drive. And,
- 4:23Speaker 9: you know, the 30, you know, culminated with a beautiful
- 4:26Speaker 9: 30-yard seam route, kind of fittingly, a similar kind of
- 4:29Speaker 9: play as the one he threw the pick on.
- 4:32Speaker 2: You know?
- 4:33Speaker 8: Exact same play.
- 4:34Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 4:34Speaker 4: So, Redden just got a little bit more separation on
- 4:37Speaker 4: this one, better throw. But they, I thought, like, big picture-wise,
- 4:42Speaker 4: I just, we were talking about this on Catch-22, I
- 4:44Speaker 4: think that not to get corny about it, but, like,
- 4:47Speaker 4: that might be the future quarterback matchup in the league. Like,
- 4:51Speaker 4: you know, those two guys are going to be the
- 4:54Speaker 4: two of the best quarterbacks in football for hopefully a
- 4:56Speaker 4: very long time.
- 4:56Speaker 5: And I think the league should be happy that Caleb
- 4:58Speaker 5: Williams ended up with Ben Johnson because he's got him
- 5:01Speaker 5: playing good quarterback.
- 5:03Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 5: Playing the position well.
- 5:05Speaker 4: I mean, both guys have good coaching staffs around them
- 5:08Speaker 4: and good organizations around them. So I think that they,
- 5:13Speaker 4: you know, that is... maybe someday those two guys play
- 5:17Speaker 4: each other in a super bowl. I don't think that
- 5:19Speaker 4: that's crazy to think. And so from that standpoint, it
- 5:22Speaker 4: was cool to be, see the Patriots in a game
- 5:25Speaker 4: like that with their quarterback fully operational and his ability to,
- 5:30Speaker 4: what I thought was for Thursday night was a pretty
- 5:33Speaker 4: crazy game plan by Dennis Allen.
- 5:35Speaker 2: There was a lot, they threw a lot at him.
- 5:37Speaker 4: I thought a lot of pressure, a lot of those
- 5:39Speaker 4: eight up fronts, a lot of different simulated pressures and
- 5:42Speaker 4: things like that. And guys coming and guys dropping and,
- 5:45Speaker 4: all that kind of stuff. And I, it started slow,
- 5:48Speaker 4: but as the game wore on, I thought Drake may
- 5:50Speaker 4: started to get a beat on what they were doing
- 5:52Speaker 4: and was starting to make plays against it.
- 5:54Speaker 5: Do you think Josh McDaniels was also getting a beat
- 5:56Speaker 5: on what they were doing? Sure. Yeah.
- 5:58Speaker 4: Uh, but you know, I put a lot of the,
- 6:01Speaker 4: the pre-snap stuff on, on the quarterback and like it
- 6:04Speaker 4: is talking to, um, to him a little bit in
- 6:06Speaker 4: the locker room. Like he, he just mentioned that he
- 6:09Speaker 4: really likes that he has control of the protections and,
- 6:13Speaker 4: in the system because he knows where the, the protection
- 6:17Speaker 4: is going. So like, if he knows who's going to
- 6:20Speaker 4: be unblocked and he knows, uh, you know, where there
- 6:23Speaker 4: may be a little bit vulnerable. So, you know, you're
- 6:25Speaker 4: talking about the, the play he made to Chisholm where
- 6:28Speaker 4: he made the guy miss and rolled out to his
- 6:29Speaker 4: right and threw the ball to Chisholm for 16 yards.
- 6:32Speaker 4: And he knew that they were sliding the protection cause
- 6:35Speaker 4: he slid it. So they knew that he was sliding
- 6:37Speaker 4: to the left. So if that guy off the right
- 6:40Speaker 4: side came, he was going to be unblocked. And so
- 6:43Speaker 4: he had, that was on Drake. Like he had to
- 6:45Speaker 4: account for that player somehow with his legs or whatever.
- 6:48Speaker 4: So I think that, you know, he it's, it was
- 6:51Speaker 4: kind of like a mature quarterback performance in that sense
- 6:53Speaker 4: that he was able to keep his head and, you know,
- 6:56Speaker 4: really start to figure out and solve some of those problems.
- 6:59Speaker 4: I was a little bit disappointed by the defense. I,
- 7:02Speaker 4: and look, it's a great quarterback and Ben Johnson.
- 7:05Speaker 2: I don't, you guys all know how I feel about him.
- 7:08Speaker 5: But if you want to be a top five quarterback,
- 7:11Speaker 5: that's the type of offense that you, you stop. Yeah.
- 7:14Speaker 4: It just felt like, um, you know, 17 missed tackles, uh,
- 7:19Speaker 4: you know, a couple of coverage busts that really cost them. Um,
- 7:22Speaker 4: you know, they just gotta be a little bit more
- 7:25Speaker 4: fundamentally sound.
- 7:26Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 7:27Speaker 4: And I, that was disappointing to me that it felt
- 7:30Speaker 4: like that game came down to Drake may kind of
- 7:34Speaker 4: having to do it all. Like he had to make
- 7:35Speaker 4: plays against the defense. He's got no running game. He's
- 7:39Speaker 4: on third string guards. The defense isn't making any plays.
- 7:42Speaker 4: So he just kind of had to be perfect. And
- 7:45Speaker 4: he throws one pick in the end zone to Raritan,
- 7:47Speaker 4: and they lose the game.
- 7:48Speaker 1: Echoes my thoughts entirely. As I said on the TV
- 7:52Speaker 1: show earlier, I'm kind of willing to give them a
- 7:54Speaker 1: pass for this one as a Thursday night kind of game,
- 7:57Speaker 1: but they're on double secret probation for me. I think
- 8:00Speaker 1: the way Evan put it is like, this isn't an
- 8:03Speaker 1: overly talented defense. It's a defense that needs to play
- 8:06Speaker 1: flawlessly together And when they do that, I think that
- 8:09Speaker 1: they're good. But I don't think they have the talent
- 8:12Speaker 1: to overcome lack of pressure, blown coverages, you know, those
- 8:17Speaker 1: kind of mistakes. So I find this game frustrates me
- 8:20Speaker 1: the more I get away from it. And I completely
- 8:22Speaker 1: feel like Drake May, Hunter Henry, and Ramondre Stevenson in
- 8:27Speaker 1: spots are kind of doing their part. Everything else kind
- 8:29Speaker 1: of feels stuck in neutral to me right now. And
- 8:31Speaker 1: part of that is injuries and guys are banged up,
- 8:34Speaker 1: not just people who are missing, but guys who are
- 8:35Speaker 1: banged up.
- 8:36Speaker 5: I get the perfect medicine for what you're talking about.
- 8:38Speaker 1: Give it to me now.
- 8:39Speaker 5: The Miami Dolphins. Oh, there we go.
- 8:41Speaker 2: That pass defense, especially.
- 8:43Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 8:43Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 8:44Speaker 1: I just, I'd like to see more. And I, you know,
- 8:46Speaker 1: there were so many missed tackles, so many frustrating plays
- 8:49Speaker 1: where I just, when I dwell on it too long,
- 8:53Speaker 1: I start to get more and more worked up about like,
- 8:55Speaker 1: what are we doing here? Because there's a lot of
- 8:57Speaker 1: veterans on this defense that, you know, you're hoping that
- 8:59Speaker 1: we're going to merge with some of the younger players
- 9:01Speaker 1: and And I think some of the younger players have
- 9:03Speaker 1: shown some positive strides. They can't do it all by themselves, though.
- 9:06Speaker 1: Elijah Ponder is not ready. Gabe Ackes is not ready yet.
- 9:08Speaker 1: They're great. I love to see them play. I love
- 9:10Speaker 1: to see them make mistakes and learn from them. But
- 9:12Speaker 1: you need more out of the veterans, too. They can't
- 9:15Speaker 1: disappear in games like that.
- 9:15Speaker 5: The missed tackles and the blown coverages. That's the two things.
- 9:18Speaker 5: Because otherwise, Caleb Williams is good. Their offense is good.
- 9:22Speaker 5: They're going to score points. You can't help them, especially in.
- 9:25Speaker 1: The got to have a moment where you got a
- 9:26Speaker 1: third and long at their eight yard line or whatever
- 9:29Speaker 1: it was. You have an opportunity to get a stop,
- 9:31Speaker 1: get a punt. And you're you got good field position. And,
- 9:33Speaker 1: you know, to Evan's point, they're not getting turnovers. So
- 9:36Speaker 1: you're not getting short fields. Paul pointed out the closest
- 9:39Speaker 1: short field they got was when they missed the field goal.
- 9:41Speaker 1: You know, you're still on your side of the field
- 9:43Speaker 1: with that. So it's just they're not.
- 9:45Speaker 5: Going to help.
- 9:45Speaker 9: Evan said, like, you know, it's it's all on Drake May.
- 9:50Speaker 9: And certainly in that Thursday night game, it was all
- 9:52Speaker 9: on Drake May. Because the defense didn't play a great game.
- 9:57Speaker 9: And the running game, they didn't have much. I thought
- 10:00Speaker 9: the pass protection. I'm not blaming the pass protection. But
- 10:03Speaker 9: as Evan said, Dennis Allen got after it. And they
- 10:07Speaker 9: got home more often than not. And Drake just had
- 10:09Speaker 9: to make a guy miss. Or as Evan explained, because
- 10:13Speaker 9: he's sliding protections and knowing where it's coming from, he
- 10:16Speaker 9: knows where he's got to go. to avoid, you know,
- 10:19Speaker 9: I think he only got sacked twice, but I mean,
- 10:21Speaker 9: he didn't have too many times where he was back
- 10:23Speaker 9: there surveying the field.
- 10:24Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 10:25Speaker 9: Um, and, and I just don't think he's getting a
- 10:27Speaker 9: whole lot from the wide receivers either. And, you know,
- 10:29Speaker 9: we can talk about AJ Brown a little bit as
- 10:31Speaker 9: we continue. This was one of those funny games to me.
- 10:34Speaker 9: I think it was an eyelash away from being an
- 10:37Speaker 9: absolute blowout.
- 10:38Speaker 8: Um, 10 to nothing.
- 10:40Speaker 9: Well, it's 10, nothing. Then it's 10, seven. It's 13, seven,
- 10:43Speaker 9: because I have earmuffs on this one. Um, The egomaniac
- 10:48Speaker 9: coach of the other team decides to hand the ball
- 10:50Speaker 9: off forward to an offensive lineman, which cost them four points,
- 10:54Speaker 9: which was, to me, just a ridiculous, dumb call. And
- 10:57Speaker 9: then not knowing the rule on top of it all,
- 10:59Speaker 9: I think, makes it even worse. So it could have
- 11:01Speaker 9: been 17-7 there. And then they go down and make
- 11:05Speaker 9: it 20-7, you know, with 14 seconds left in the half,
- 11:09Speaker 9: which could have been, as I said, 24-7. And then
- 11:13Speaker 9: you got, like, nine guys in the end zone. I mean,
- 11:15Speaker 9: you rush six, and everybody else is in the end zone.
- 11:17Speaker 9: And did you guys see, like, these highlights of, like,
- 11:20Speaker 9: the effort that the guys from Chicago had, like, chasing
- 11:24Speaker 9: from Andre Stevenson around?
- 11:25Speaker 5: You got him. No, you got him.
- 11:27Speaker 9: So, you know, it could have easily been 24-7 at
- 11:31Speaker 9: the half. Then they come out in the second half,
- 11:33Speaker 9: they go right down the field. It could have been 31-7,
- 11:35Speaker 9: and then we're not talking about any of this. However,
- 11:38Speaker 9: as my buddy Tommy and Quincy likes to say on
- 11:41Speaker 9: Felger and Mass, however.
- 11:44Speaker 2: It wasn't 24-7. It wasn't 31-7.
- 11:47Speaker 9: They were able to make that play at the end
- 11:49Speaker 9: of the half, and they got themselves back in the game.
- 11:51Speaker 9: And here's the frustrating part for me. At 27-21, you
- 11:55Speaker 9: had two possessions and did nothing with them. And again,
- 12:00Speaker 9: it would have been a steal of the game, however
- 12:03Speaker 9: you want to call it, that I do think Chicago
- 12:05Speaker 9: was the better team for the majority of that game.
- 12:09Speaker 9: But they miss a 53-yard field goal. You take over
- 12:11Speaker 9: on the 43-yard line, you go three and out. That
- 12:15Speaker 9: can't happen.
- 12:15Speaker 2: Yeah. That can't happen.
- 12:17Speaker 9: I thought there was one of his rare bad throws
- 12:19Speaker 9: on first down, and then he gets sacked when he
- 12:21Speaker 9: just gets an avalanche on him on second down, third
- 12:24Speaker 9: and 20.
- 12:26Speaker 2: That's the game right there. That was your chance to
- 12:27Speaker 2: steal the game.
- 12:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 12:29Speaker 4: And, you know, it's tough because he made so many
- 12:32Speaker 4: good plays in this game.
- 12:33Speaker 8: He was really good.
- 12:34Speaker 4: And good plays out of structure, like just running around
- 12:36Speaker 4: and making guys miss in the backfield and making throws.
- 12:40Speaker 4: And it just felt like it all kind of, the
- 12:44Speaker 4: offensive line injuries, like the receiver is not necessarily hitting
- 12:47Speaker 4: on all cylinders right now.
- 12:49Speaker 2: And like when they really needed it.
- 12:51Speaker 4: They just didn't have quite enough in the reservoir to
- 12:54Speaker 4: like pull something out and pull another drive out of it. But, uh,
- 12:58Speaker 4: you know, I just thought looking at the two sides
- 13:01Speaker 4: of the ball, like I just, I was more concerned
- 13:03Speaker 4: coming out of this game about the defense definitely than
- 13:06Speaker 4: the offense, even though they missed those opportunities. But, um,
- 13:10Speaker 4: you know, you give up a, a touchdown on third
- 13:13Speaker 4: and 17.
- 13:15Speaker 8: Basically untouched. Untouched on a screen.
- 13:18Speaker 2: It's just bad ball.
- 13:19Speaker 5: It's bad.
- 13:21Speaker 4: So you just can't do those types of things defensively
- 13:24Speaker 4: and consistently and expect to win games.
- 13:27Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 13:28Speaker 1: I thought like Christian Ellis was kind of the embodiment
- 13:30Speaker 1: on the other side of the ball where he's all
- 13:32Speaker 1: over the place making tackles, but then I'm sure you
- 13:34Speaker 1: saw it looked like he didn't get the call on
- 13:36Speaker 1: that one big play and he ran to the flat
- 13:38Speaker 1: and it's wide open.
- 13:39Speaker 4: Yeah, it looked like that was a miscommunication, which is like,
- 13:42Speaker 4: two weeks in a row now that they've busted a
- 13:43Speaker 4: coverage and given up like a, a huge play, you know,
- 13:46Speaker 4: Omar Cooper Jr.
- 13:47Speaker 8: Touchdown two weeks ago.
- 13:49Speaker 4: And then this week, but I, I watching it, I
- 13:51Speaker 4: thought that was kind of the only time that that happened.
- 13:54Speaker 4: I was concerned that that was going to be like, Oh,
- 13:56Speaker 4: you know, all over the tape, like the dolphins pass
- 13:58Speaker 4: defense where it's like they're busting coverages all over the place.
- 14:01Speaker 2: But it was really that.
- 14:03Speaker 4: In the, in the third and 17, like those were
- 14:05Speaker 4: the two kind of backbreaking plays, the 58 yard or
- 14:08Speaker 4: the burden and that one. So I, I just, Overall,
- 14:12Speaker 4: I just think defensively, their zone coverages, and we were
- 14:16Speaker 4: breaking this down on catch with all the numbers, like
- 14:18Speaker 4: the zone coverages right now are ineffective. They're 30th in
- 14:22Speaker 4: the league in EPA in zone coverage. And I think
- 14:25Speaker 4: all of this kind of ties back to pass rush.
- 14:28Speaker 2: I was just going to ask you how much you
- 14:29Speaker 2: thought it was related to the lack of pressure.
- 14:31Speaker 4: So when they play man-to-man coverage, when they're third in
- 14:34Speaker 4: the league in EPA in man coverage, which makes sense,
- 14:37Speaker 4: they have a 50% pressure rate, the second best in
- 14:39Speaker 4: the league. When they play zone coverage, it drops to 29%.
- 14:43Speaker 4: Because in zone, if you blitz, now you don't have
- 14:47Speaker 4: as many people in zone to stop the coverage. So
- 14:50Speaker 4: if you blitz, then you're exposing the back end in
- 14:53Speaker 4: zone coverage. But if you play with a four-man rush
- 14:56Speaker 4: and you don't have a great four-man rush, then the
- 14:58Speaker 4: quarterback's got all day. So like, I think they're in
- 15:01Speaker 4: a tough spot with those own coverages of like, you know,
- 15:04Speaker 4: what do we do? Do we blitz out of them?
- 15:06Speaker 4: Do we rush for, can we get home with four?
- 15:09Speaker 4: And then when you play these good quarterbacks, like if
- 15:11Speaker 4: you're not getting home and you're not getting pressure and
- 15:14Speaker 4: you're in zone, they're going to pick you apart.
- 15:16Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 15:16Speaker 4: And that's exactly what, what's been happening. So, uh, they,
- 15:20Speaker 4: their run game offensively, their zone coverage is defensively right now,
- 15:23Speaker 4: or they're kind of their Achilles heel. Yeah.
- 15:26Speaker 5: All right. Paul, you kind of mentioned it a little earlier.
- 15:29Speaker 5: We need to talk about A.J. Brown a little bit
- 15:32Speaker 5: and what he's doing and his situation health-wise, perhaps, and
- 15:38Speaker 5: his role in the offense right now because we were
- 15:42Speaker 5: hoping for more.
- 15:42Speaker 2: They need more.
- 15:43Speaker 5: And maybe it's too early to expect that because he's
- 15:46Speaker 5: coming off that injury and maybe he came off a
- 15:49Speaker 5: little bit sooner than he should have. But I'm not
- 15:52Speaker 5: seeing that physical– 50-50 type of play that's needed on
- 15:58Speaker 5: some of these balls. And I think a couple of
- 16:01Speaker 5: them were catchable. I'm just not seeing a lift. He's
- 16:05Speaker 5: waiting for the ball to get to him, in other words.
- 16:07Speaker 5: And he's not going and getting it and beating the
- 16:09Speaker 5: other man like you would for a rebound in the
- 16:12Speaker 5: NBA or something.
- 16:13Speaker 1: I don't think the short week helped him with that
- 16:15Speaker 1: injury and that recovery. I mean, there's one comeback he
- 16:18Speaker 1: ran that we all, watching it live, were like, geez,
- 16:21Speaker 1: it takes him a while to hammer down and come
- 16:23Speaker 1: back out of it. So how much of it is
- 16:26Speaker 1: you're just going to have to deal with this for
- 16:27Speaker 1: the rest of the season, which is what Troy said
- 16:30Speaker 1: when the injury happened. He's going to be dealing with
- 16:32Speaker 1: that the rest of the year, which sounds like a
- 16:33Speaker 1: knife through your heart when you hear a receiver say that.
- 16:36Speaker 1: But what's real and how much better can he get
- 16:38Speaker 1: on the fly? Does this longer break help him get
- 16:40Speaker 1: a little healthier for Miami? Does the bye week in
- 16:42Speaker 1: a couple weeks help him? I think he's better than this.
- 16:45Speaker 1: I'm trying to flush him. this along with some of
- 16:47Speaker 1: the things that were from that Thursday night, do the show.
- 16:49Speaker 5: He was better than this in the summer. Oh yeah.
- 16:52Speaker 8: He was better against the Jets.
- 16:54Speaker 5: It's not like we're going back to last year, like
- 16:57Speaker 5: a couple months ago.
- 16:58Speaker 6: Yep.
- 16:58Speaker 5: He was better than this.
- 16:59Speaker 1: Right.
- 17:00Speaker 4: That's just kind of why I pushed back on like the,
- 17:03Speaker 4: the high ankle thing, because. he was open all day
- 17:06Speaker 4: against the jets. They just didn't catch the ball. He
- 17:09Speaker 4: was literally open the entire game. This game, it was
- 17:13Speaker 4: what four or five days, whatever you want to count
- 17:15Speaker 4: a Thursday night game after just playing 52 snaps against
- 17:18Speaker 4: the jets five days earlier.
- 17:20Speaker 8: And this one, he looked, he looked tired.
- 17:22Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 17:22Speaker 8: He didn't look as explosive.
- 17:24Speaker 4: He didn't look as, uh, you know, as quick, you know, I, I,
- 17:27Speaker 4: but is that, Conditioning is that bouncing back in between
- 17:32Speaker 4: games with the injury. So that's why I'm trying not
- 17:36Speaker 4: to overreact to how he looked in the game because
- 17:40Speaker 4: I think that it was a tough spot to ask
- 17:42Speaker 4: him to play that many snaps on Sunday and then
- 17:45Speaker 4: come right back on Thursday and be his usual self
- 17:48Speaker 4: on Thursday.
- 17:48Speaker 5: But you can just imagine if he did get back
- 17:51Speaker 5: to form, the difference he could make.
- 17:54Speaker 11: In the offense.
- 17:54Speaker 1: I desperately need him.
- 17:56Speaker 4: He's making a slight difference just by being out there.
- 17:59Speaker 4: Just by literally being out there, he's already making a
- 18:02Speaker 4: little bit of a difference, but great players like that,
- 18:05Speaker 4: you want to make plays on top of being a
- 18:07Speaker 4: decoy and taking coverage and things like that.
- 18:09Speaker 1: Give me Matt Collins back. I know after this week,
- 18:12Speaker 1: he'll be eligible. Hopefully, he's able to come back. I
- 18:15Speaker 1: think he's another one. We just know Drake loves to
- 18:17Speaker 1: throw to him in big situations, and then maybe it
- 18:19Speaker 1: takes a little bit of pressure off A.J. Brown and
- 18:21Speaker 1: lets him ease back in, but I totally agree with
- 18:24Speaker 1: everything you haven't said.
- 18:25Speaker 2: I just, my question.
- 18:26Speaker 1: And I think everybody's question is, is like, how much
- 18:28Speaker 1: better can it get this season? How, you know, how
- 18:30Speaker 1: healthy can he get? What will he look like coming
- 18:32Speaker 1: down the stretch? You got to go into Kansas city
- 18:35Speaker 1: on a Monday night game. That should be a hell
- 18:36Speaker 1: of a game. You're going to need real AJ Brown
- 18:39Speaker 1: for that one. You know, if you're going to come
- 18:40Speaker 1: out of there with a win. So luckily there's a
- 18:43Speaker 1: little down period with Miami. We'll see if they can
- 18:45Speaker 1: get through this one without getting a top notch performance
- 18:47Speaker 1: from him. But like you said, Fred, they're going to
- 18:49Speaker 1: need him if they want to do anything.
- 18:50Speaker 5: So let's now talk about the injury situation. What, new
- 18:54Speaker 5: reports do we have in terms of status well ben
- 18:57Speaker 5: brown brown was out yeah he walked through you know
- 19:01Speaker 5: of all the injuries that happened in that jets game
- 19:03Speaker 5: it looked like ben brown's was the worst but you
- 19:05Speaker 5: know he might be back at practice uh how about
- 19:08Speaker 5: carlton davis yeah he's.
- 19:10Speaker 4: Been practicing he's practiced a little bit last week too
- 19:13Speaker 4: so hopefully that was like a ramp up and then
- 19:14Speaker 4: they're planning on him playing in miami on sunday so
- 19:18Speaker 4: uh we'll see with that but for once they actually
- 19:21Speaker 4: came out of this game like without any major injuries
- 19:24Speaker 4: uh so um that that was good you know barmore
- 19:26Speaker 4: fell on the ball trying to strip sack caleb williams
- 19:29Speaker 4: at the end of the game knocked the wind out
- 19:31Speaker 4: of him uh so that that one wasn't a major
- 19:33Speaker 4: injury and that was kind of the only real scare
- 19:36Speaker 4: so uh they at least finally they come out of
- 19:38Speaker 4: a game without any real injuries so that's yeah.
- 19:41Speaker 1: Yeah that's kind of the thing i've just been thinking
- 19:43Speaker 1: about in my head is like the guys that they've
- 19:46Speaker 1: actually lost no question tough you've lost a couple guards
- 19:49Speaker 1: now you're down to fourth fifth string but like i
- 19:52Speaker 1: just think it's the overall attrition of guys that are
- 19:55Speaker 1: playing hurt and i don't know what to degree but
- 19:58Speaker 1: you look across the injury report and it's across the board.
- 20:01Speaker 1: I mean, Carl Davis, Christian Gonzalez, Kevin Byard, Craig Woodson,
- 20:05Speaker 1: Christian Ellis, Morgan Moses, AJ Brown, Draymond Jones. I mean,
- 20:09Speaker 1: now I'm not saying, look, this is the NFL guys
- 20:11Speaker 1: are going to be on the injury report. You got
- 20:13Speaker 1: to play through it. But I think when we talk
- 20:14Speaker 1: about this being a banged up team, I'm that that's
- 20:17Speaker 1: more to me. It's like, you're not getting the top
- 20:19Speaker 1: performance from a lot of the veterans that you really need.
- 20:22Speaker 5: Good point.
- 20:23Speaker 1: Um, you know, in the, in these situations, you just,
- 20:25Speaker 1: you need more. I need more out of those guys.
- 20:26Speaker 1: And look, I dream on Jones is a warrior. I mean,
- 20:29Speaker 1: Morgan Moses is a warrior. These guys are playing through stuff,
- 20:31Speaker 1: but at the end of the day, it's hurting the
- 20:34Speaker 1: performance on the field. And somehow they've got to figure
- 20:36Speaker 1: out a way to get healthy on the fly.
- 20:37Speaker 5: Yeah. Well, they've got a full week, you know, when
- 20:40Speaker 5: they had a little extra, so they had 10 days
- 20:43Speaker 5: since Thursday. So let's see Matt Collins.
- 20:47Speaker 2: I don't know why, but.
- 20:48Speaker 5: I'm not hopeful on that one. I don't know what,
- 20:51Speaker 5: What happened? No, it's just a gut feeling for me
- 20:54Speaker 5: that he won't be back soon.
- 20:56Speaker 2: Oh.
- 20:57Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 20:57Speaker 4: We always just worry about the calf as the precursor
- 21:00Speaker 4: to the Achilles. And if you play on a weakened calf,
- 21:04Speaker 4: then there's history of the Achilles popping from that. So
- 21:08Speaker 4: you have to be really careful about not coming back
- 21:10Speaker 4: too early.
- 21:11Speaker 5: Maybe it's just like what was said when it first
- 21:13Speaker 5: happened and kind of the mood of Vrabel when he
- 21:16Speaker 5: was talking about it. Like, I just get this feeling like,
- 21:20Speaker 5: I don't know. I'm not getting my hope up.
- 21:23Speaker 1: Probably, I don't know if you can read any. Did
- 21:26Speaker 1: you read anything that you just saw on the sideline,
- 21:28Speaker 1: I think? I remember, I think I saw him on
- 21:29Speaker 1: the sideline.
- 21:30Speaker 5: He was at the game.
- 21:30Speaker 1: Is that a positive sign or is that just generally whatever?
- 21:34Speaker 5: You know, before you get into the stadium or as
- 21:36Speaker 5: you get into the stadium, everybody has to have their
- 21:38Speaker 5: bags checked. And Hollins was behind us. And, you know,
- 21:43Speaker 5: usually when you see a player behind you, you say, hey,
- 21:45Speaker 5: you know, go ahead, get in front of us. He's like,
- 21:47Speaker 5: It doesn't matter. I'm not going anywhere. So he was
- 21:50Speaker 5: cool being in the back of the line. Was he
- 21:52Speaker 5: wearing shoes? No, he was not wearing shoes.
- 21:56Speaker 8: With a bad cap.
- 21:58Speaker 5: But I say that because he was in good spirits.
- 22:00Speaker 5: So at least there's that. He wasn't moping around, I
- 22:02Speaker 5: wish I could play. He was in good spirits.
- 22:04Speaker 1: Did you tell him your theory of, like, I don't.
- 22:06Speaker 2: Think you're going to be back?
- 22:07Speaker 5: No.
- 22:08Speaker 2: It's funny. I got the opposite impression with him. I
- 22:10Speaker 2: kind of thought.
- 22:12Speaker 9: It wasn't a foregone conclusion that he was going to
- 22:14Speaker 9: IR in the first place.
- 22:15Speaker 8: I agree with that. I mean, he spoke at his
- 22:17Speaker 8: locker right after it happened.
- 22:19Speaker 9: I thought he was going to actually give it a try,
- 22:21Speaker 9: maybe miss a game, and then all of a sudden
- 22:23Speaker 9: it went from he's doing some things at practice to, oh,
- 22:27Speaker 9: you know what, we're going to just put him on IR.
- 22:29Speaker 9: I thought that was kind of like one of those,
- 22:31Speaker 9: all right, let's just make sure he's healthy when he's back.
- 22:33Speaker 2: I hope you're wrong, Fred.
- 22:34Speaker 5: Yeah, I hope I'm wrong too.
- 22:36Speaker 9: Because I do think, I mean, whether it's him or Dobbs,
- 22:39Speaker 9: They need another guy, I think, because I don't think
- 22:42Speaker 9: you're going to get vintage A.J.
- 22:44Speaker 12: Brown.
- 22:45Speaker 9: I think you're going to get sort of a diminished
- 22:48Speaker 9: version of him. So he needs somebody, I think, to
- 22:50Speaker 9: help him.
- 22:52Speaker 5: Have we ever got the official word on what Dobbs'
- 22:55Speaker 5: injury is? I know it's a shoulder, but what happened?
- 22:58Speaker 2: He landed diving. Is it broken?
- 23:01Speaker 5: Is it a clavicle? What is it?
- 23:03Speaker 9: My guess is it's a separated shoulder, but I do
- 23:05Speaker 9: not know. I have not seen it.
- 23:08Speaker 1: If I had to guess, I would say an AC
- 23:10Speaker 1: joint sprain, third degree, which means you've got to put
- 23:14Speaker 1: a pin in it.
- 23:14Speaker 2: I've had it.
- 23:15Speaker 1: The collarbone pops off. It's different degrees. First degree, just
- 23:20Speaker 1: a little sprain. Two is what I had. Three is
- 23:22Speaker 1: all the way off. So I think three, you've got
- 23:24Speaker 1: to put a pin in it, and I think that
- 23:26Speaker 1: probably would be my experience.
- 23:28Speaker 5: There you go. Good doctor. I'm not going.
- 23:31Speaker 2: To step into that one. You're Achilles.
- 23:34Speaker 1: You're the Achilles guy.
- 23:35Speaker 5: Kind of staying on the injuries and their effect. Yes,
- 23:38Speaker 5: the Patriots run game needs work. I think what they had,
- 23:43Speaker 5: 17 attempts in the last game or something like that,
- 23:46Speaker 5: maybe 13. And they didn't do well. Other than Drake,
- 23:50Speaker 5: if you take Drake's numbers out, it was like under
- 23:53Speaker 5: four yards a carry.
- 23:54Speaker 2: 13. Yeah, 13 carries.
- 23:57Speaker 5: But having said that, I think the line's staying together.
- 24:01Speaker 5: It's holding up. It's not a disaster with the two
- 24:04Speaker 5: guards in there. So I have hope there that if
- 24:08Speaker 5: Ben Brown comes back and Morgan Moses gets a little
- 24:11Speaker 5: bit more healthy, that maybe they can get this run
- 24:14Speaker 5: game going a little bit.
- 24:15Speaker 1: I just, I feel, I hate to be Debbie Downer,
- 24:17Speaker 1: but like, I just like, when was the last time
- 24:19Speaker 1: they could run the ball? No matter who was blocking,
- 24:21Speaker 1: no matter who the running back was. I mean, you
- 24:23Speaker 1: had a little spurt with Corey Kiner at the end
- 24:25Speaker 1: of the Jets game, but you know, looking at the
- 24:27Speaker 1: scouting report, it was like, geez, they should be able
- 24:29Speaker 1: to run the ball a little bit against Chicago.
- 24:31Speaker 5: Nope.
- 24:31Speaker 1: It doesn't really seem to matter.
- 24:33Speaker 2: So I don't know. I've kind of have much faith.
- 24:34Speaker 1: I don't want to say I've given up, but like,
- 24:37Speaker 1: to say that all of a sudden this group's going
- 24:38Speaker 1: to get it and the holes are going to start opening.
- 24:40Speaker 1: Like when I watched the Rams and it's just guys
- 24:42Speaker 1: getting pushed down the field and it's like, you know, it's.
- 24:45Speaker 9: A tricky needle that Josh has to thread there too,
- 24:48Speaker 9: because you can't just throw the ball every play.
- 24:50Speaker 2: Yeah. So you have to, I mean, what do you
- 24:52Speaker 2: have 30 at 13 in this game?
- 24:54Speaker 9: Right.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Probably want a little bit more balanced even than that.
- 24:57Speaker 9: But at some point you can't just sit there and say,
- 25:00Speaker 9: I can't keep running the ball because all that's doing
- 25:03Speaker 9: is taking a play away from Drake.
- 25:05Speaker 5: May.
- 25:06Speaker 2: To be able to get this first down.
- 25:08Speaker 9: So I can imagine that's a tough balance there, but
- 25:12Speaker 9: I kind of agree with Mike, and I think Evan agrees.
- 25:14Speaker 2: I think the three of us talked about this a
- 25:16Speaker 2: little bit earlier.
- 25:17Speaker 9: I just don't know how you can expect them to
- 25:19Speaker 9: just suddenly start running the ball with more efficiency when
- 25:23Speaker 9: they really haven't done it.
- 25:24Speaker 2: And all the guys that.
- 25:25Speaker 4: Are on IR, like the two guards, Julian Hill, Reggie Gilliam,
- 25:29Speaker 4: like these are the guys that were either brought in
- 25:32Speaker 4: or here that are supposed to set a tone and
- 25:34Speaker 4: be able to run the football.
- 25:35Speaker 2: The run game stresses me out.
- 25:38Speaker 5: Do you think that the Patriots are candidates for doing
- 25:41Speaker 5: something before the trade deadline? I know Vrabel didn't rule
- 25:44Speaker 5: it out. You know, he's just being honest. Yeah, we'll
- 25:47Speaker 5: look at everything. We'll talk and we'll listen. But do
- 25:50Speaker 5: you think it's something they should do?
- 25:52Speaker 8: I mean, they definitely should be interested in anything.
- 25:56Speaker 2: But I just I don't know.
- 25:58Speaker 8: I think that.
- 25:59Speaker 4: They need to start to think about how they're running
- 26:02Speaker 4: the football and if they can do it differently to
- 26:04Speaker 4: be more effective running the ball. Because it's not just
- 26:08Speaker 4: that the run game doesn't go anywhere. It's impacting their
- 26:11Speaker 4: play action passing efficiency as well. So they basically just
- 26:15Speaker 4: have no run game or play action passing game that's
- 26:18Speaker 4: effective right now. So everything is drop back passing. It's
- 26:22Speaker 4: all Drake May in the shotgun dropping back and making
- 26:25Speaker 4: stuff happen. And that I mean, as the Cincinnati Bengals,
- 26:28Speaker 4: like that's a really tough way to consistently live with
- 26:32Speaker 4: your quarterback in the shotgun and just having to drop
- 26:35Speaker 4: back past 40, 45 times a game. Like it's just
- 26:39Speaker 4: not really a way that you want to be consistently.
- 26:41Speaker 4: And so the run game to me is also like
- 26:45Speaker 4: a goes hand in hand with play action passing.
- 26:47Speaker 2: And like that's what's more important to me is.
- 26:50Speaker 4: The explosives that you can generate and play action passing
- 26:52Speaker 4: off of your run game. They don't have that right now.
- 26:55Speaker 4: So their under center offense in general is down.
- 26:59Speaker 2: Near the bottom of the league.
- 27:01Speaker 4: So what do they do? You know, do they just
- 27:04Speaker 4: go all in and being a shotgun offense? You know,
- 27:07Speaker 4: do they spread teams out? Do they run more RPOs?
- 27:10Speaker 4: Do they run more pistol? Do they, you know, what
- 27:13Speaker 4: do you do to try to get the running backs
- 27:15Speaker 4: some room to breathe? Because I think Ramondre Stevenson's playing
- 27:18Speaker 4: out of his mind.
- 27:19Speaker 2: There's just no place to go. There's just no place
- 27:22Speaker 2: to go.
- 27:23Speaker 4: And Trayvon Henderson obviously has his issues, but he's never
- 27:26Speaker 4: in space either, unless they give him, like, a jet
- 27:29Speaker 4: sweep or an end around or something like that.
- 27:31Speaker 8: So it's just a.
- 27:34Speaker 2: It's really limiting their offense to, like.
- 27:36Speaker 5: So you're not buying, you know, some of your brethren,
- 27:39Speaker 5: all-22 stuff about vision when it comes to Henderson?
- 27:44Speaker 4: I think it's a factor, but I don't think it's
- 27:46Speaker 4: like he's leaving... huge chunks of yards on the field
- 27:49Speaker 4: because he has poor vision. I, I don't, I don't
- 27:52Speaker 4: see it that way.
- 27:53Speaker 8: Is he leaving some yards on the field?
- 27:56Speaker 2: Yeah, absolutely.
- 27:57Speaker 4: But I don't think that he's, you know, this would
- 28:00Speaker 4: have been a 30, 35 yard run.
- 28:03Speaker 5: If he had just seen this cutback lane and like,
- 28:06Speaker 5: I'd go for five or six yards.
- 28:08Speaker 4: Well, he got five or six on a draw that,
- 28:10Speaker 4: that everybody's claiming got him benched.
- 28:12Speaker 2: So I, I don't know.
- 28:14Speaker 4: Like it just, to me, this is, holistic it's the
- 28:18Speaker 4: blocking it's the scheme it's all of it it's not
- 28:21Speaker 4: just you know oh it's on this one person or
- 28:25Speaker 4: it's on this one thing that would fix it like
- 28:27Speaker 4: i don't know how you can play a better football
- 28:28Speaker 4: game than romandre stevenson did the other night and he's
- 28:31Speaker 4: he's running into a brick wall.
- 28:33Speaker 9: That's i think the problem and henderson's usage has gone
- 28:36Speaker 9: down the last couple of games and i don't know
- 28:38Speaker 9: how much of that is related to the ankle injury
- 28:40Speaker 9: that he suffered right in that jets game but I
- 28:43Speaker 9: think Evan makes a great point. Stevenson is doing so
- 28:46Speaker 9: many things really well right now that he's your best
- 28:49Speaker 9: option on first down if you want to run the
- 28:51Speaker 9: ball between the tackles, right?
- 28:53Speaker 2: Would you argue that?
- 28:54Speaker 7: No.
- 28:55Speaker 9: He's your best option on third down if you want
- 28:57Speaker 9: to try to keep Drake May healthy.
- 28:59Speaker 11: Yep.
- 29:00Speaker 2: Like he killed another guy the other night.
- 29:04Speaker 5: By the way, I like your split screen. You did
- 29:06Speaker 5: a good job explaining that. what we're looking at.
- 29:10Speaker 11: Yes.
- 29:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:11Speaker 4: We're doing a good job with those social, social team.
- 29:15Speaker 5: Sorry.
- 29:16Speaker 2: My bad for making content.
- 29:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 29:18Speaker 2: We're not a lot.
- 29:19Speaker 5: Don't listen to him.
- 29:21Speaker 2: We did a, we did an Eli Raritan one as well.
- 29:24Speaker 8: That's up now.
- 29:25Speaker 2: Only other guys on that show are allowed to make.
- 29:27Speaker 2: That's fun.
- 29:29Speaker 9: Mike and I, but I, It's hard. Like, what do
- 29:36Speaker 9: you do when Stevenson is your best option? as your
- 29:40Speaker 9: traditional first down, you know, bellwether back as well as
- 29:45Speaker 9: your best option is your third down back and pass protection.
- 29:48Speaker 2: And Oh, by the way, he had a hundred yards
- 29:50Speaker 2: the other night. Yeah.
- 29:51Speaker 9: And I understand I'm not getting lost in the yardage.
- 29:53Speaker 9: I understand that.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Whatever 48 of them came on a fluke play.
- 29:57Speaker 9: I'm not, but, there's still like four or five other
- 30:00Speaker 9: catches in addition to that, that were important plays.
- 30:02Speaker 5: In the game.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Very first play of the game, 19 yards to Stevens.
- 30:05Speaker 1: What were you guys clocking though with, with Henderson? Because I,
- 30:08Speaker 1: like we watching TV, it's like, sometimes I lose track
- 30:11Speaker 1: of guys and then it was all of a sudden
- 30:12Speaker 1: he like disappeared. Did you guys think he was benched
- 30:15Speaker 1: or I like, I was erring on the side of
- 30:17Speaker 1: he's banged up. They're going to limit him a little bit,
- 30:19Speaker 1: but Ben's gone for a while.
- 30:21Speaker 4: Bench is a strong word. Um, but, he's not running
- 30:26Speaker 4: the ball effectively. He's not pass blocking effectively.
- 30:29Speaker 8: So it's kind.
- 30:31Speaker 1: Of like end of the season.
- 30:31Speaker 2: I dropped the ball on that.
- 30:33Speaker 9: I was trying to ask Rabel that yesterday about Stevenson's usage. And, uh,
- 30:37Speaker 9: I didn't get my question in, but that.
- 30:39Speaker 2: Was on me.
- 30:40Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:40Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 30:41Speaker 1: It's like four injury questions. So you could have maybe
- 30:43Speaker 1: asked on the side.
- 30:44Speaker 5: Get in there.
- 30:45Speaker 9: No, I mean, it was my fault. I, I could
- 30:48Speaker 9: have been a big boy and just got my question
- 30:50Speaker 9: in and I allowed myself to get, you know, steamroll
- 30:53Speaker 9: shouted down or, You know, softly.
- 30:56Speaker 5: Yeah, well, it's a tough meet.
- 30:57Speaker 2: It is a tough crowd. It's a tough crowd.
- 30:59Speaker 5: You have to.
- 31:00Speaker 8: Ask them about good questions.
- 31:02Speaker 9: Not like I was expecting to get a good answer anyway,
- 31:05Speaker 9: you know. But, I mean, his usage is dropping.
- 31:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 31:10Speaker 2: Is Corey Kiner sort of taking his carries right now?
- 31:15Speaker 2: Is it health-related? I don't know.
- 31:16Speaker 4: It's just tough to find, like, what is he good
- 31:20Speaker 4: at right now? And I don't mean to be, like,
- 31:23Speaker 4: doom and gloom about it but like.
- 31:24Speaker 2: There's a wide open lane he can run right through it.
- 31:27Speaker 4: Right and they're not making wide open lanes so they
- 31:29Speaker 4: need guys like at least kiner is a little slippery
- 31:32Speaker 4: and can you know kind of you know navigate through
- 31:35Speaker 4: some some tight spaces and you know stuff like that
- 31:38Speaker 4: like it's not just on travion henderson they're just not
- 31:42Speaker 4: making the holes that they were making for him last
- 31:44Speaker 4: year where he had those opportunities to to take off
- 31:47Speaker 4: into the open field so that's, it's tough.
- 31:50Speaker 2: It's funny though.
- 31:51Speaker 1: Sorry, let's just say real quick, put a button on it, like,
- 31:53Speaker 1: we kind of talked about this all summer, of like, Travion,
- 31:56Speaker 1: we need more from him.
- 31:57Speaker 2: He's got to develop.
- 31:58Speaker 1: And meanwhile, outside, it felt a lot of talk of, like,
- 32:01Speaker 1: he's RB1 now. Like, you know, a lot of the
- 32:03Speaker 1: fantasy angles on Travion were that, you know, he was
- 32:06Speaker 1: going to be the superstar of the backfield.
- 32:07Speaker 4: I don't want to, like, finger wag anybody, but Deuce
- 32:10Speaker 4: and I got a lot of heat last year for
- 32:12Speaker 4: being remandre people. And now everybody is like, oh, he's
- 32:17Speaker 4: much better than Travion. It's like, we've been trying to
- 32:19Speaker 4: tell you this for two years.
- 32:20Speaker 5: Everyone who, at this point in their careers... didn't say
- 32:25Speaker 5: that remandre is better. Just, they don't know ball.
- 32:27Speaker 4: Well, I'll ask you, we were, him and I, especially
- 32:30Speaker 4: we're taking heat for, for backing remandre.
- 32:33Speaker 5: Well, I think that was in the midst of a
- 32:34Speaker 5: couple explosive runs and everyone was, you know, we were
- 32:37Speaker 5: actually stars.
- 32:40Speaker 8: All right.
- 32:42Speaker 5: So tomorrow we'll turn the page and we'll talk about
- 32:44Speaker 5: this dolphins game coming up, but I do want to
- 32:46Speaker 5: talk about the weekend of football because we didn't have
- 32:50Speaker 5: a game and we had a chance to watch a
- 32:52Speaker 5: little bit of football. I, No, in my area, I
- 32:54Speaker 5: don't know about up in Peabody, Paul, but I had
- 32:56Speaker 5: the Ravens in the– who were they playing?
- 33:00Speaker 2: Bengals.
- 33:00Speaker 5: The Bengals game available. That's the game that I watched
- 33:04Speaker 5: because I don't have red zone.
- 33:06Speaker 2: You don't?
- 33:07Speaker 5: They turned it off on me.
- 33:08Speaker 4: Oh.
- 33:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm sorry. I watched the red zone.
- 33:14Speaker 9: But, yeah, I mean, that was obviously– it shows you
- 33:16Speaker 9: what Cincinnati can do when they start clicking. That's the best–
- 33:21Speaker 9: It's the best.
- 33:25Speaker 5: Trio in football.
- 33:27Speaker 2: No one has two receivers like that.
- 33:30Speaker 9: And when Burrow gets hot, five straight touchdown drives, this
- 33:36Speaker 9: is going to be another lost season for the Ravens
- 33:38Speaker 9: if they don't get Lamar Jackson. Oh, by the way,
- 33:39Speaker 9: I made an executive decision based on your comment when
- 33:44Speaker 9: we were.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Doing the picks last week.
- 33:47Speaker 9: No matter who you picked in the Cincinnati-Baltimore game, I
- 33:49Speaker 9: gave you credit for a win.
- 33:51Speaker 8: I picked the Bengals, correctly.
- 33:51Speaker 9: Because everybody said that if Lamar doesn't play, they want Cincinnati.
- 33:55Speaker 9: Lamar didn't play, so we all took Cincinnati.
- 33:58Speaker 5: Okay. Thank you, Paul.
- 33:59Speaker 8: I don't like that.
- 34:00Speaker 2: I just, in the interest of... I just want to
- 34:02Speaker 2: be fair.
- 34:03Speaker 5: Well, and I... And to be fair, that's what we
- 34:05Speaker 5: would have picked.
- 34:06Speaker 2: Right. We all said it.
- 34:08Speaker 8: Some of us picked the Bengals.
- 34:09Speaker 3: You did.
- 34:09Speaker 2: I picked the Bengals too. I watched two of the.
- 34:13Speaker 1: Next three Patriots opponents, the Packers and the Lions.
- 34:16Speaker 5: That Packers game. Let's talk about your friends and stripes
- 34:20Speaker 5: in that Packers game.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Okay.
- 34:22Speaker 9: So the roughing the passer thing is really getting out
- 34:25Speaker 9: of control. I thought there was a really bad one
- 34:28Speaker 9: on the Packers in that game. I thought there was
- 34:30Speaker 9: a really bad personal foul on the Lions in that
- 34:32Speaker 9: game that didn't get quite as much. talk, when the
- 34:37Speaker 9: little dump-off pass over the middle to the back, I
- 34:42Speaker 9: think it was Marshawn, what's his name?
- 34:44Speaker 2: The back?
- 34:45Speaker 8: Marshawn Lloyd.
- 34:46Speaker 6: Lloyd.
- 34:47Speaker 9: And the linebacker came up, the ball went off the
- 34:49Speaker 9: guy's hands, and the linebacker came up and knocked him over.
- 34:52Speaker 5: Right. Like, three steps.
- 34:54Speaker 2: It wasn't that late.
- 34:56Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 34:56Speaker 9: Like, and even Brady, which... as a complete aside, it
- 35:00Speaker 9: really makes me laugh listening to Brady. Tell me how
- 35:02Speaker 9: every roughing the passer is not a roughing the passer.
- 35:04Speaker 2: Meanwhile, he's up and screaming from the guy who we
- 35:08Speaker 2: could hear in the press box every time someone got
- 35:10Speaker 2: within 20 yards of him. Um, but I just think
- 35:14Speaker 2: that these, these calls are really having heavy impacts in games.
- 35:18Speaker 9: Um, I thought the more interesting element of the Detroit
- 35:21Speaker 9: green Bay game is Dan Campbell going for a fourth
- 35:24Speaker 9: and one from his own 24.
- 35:24Speaker 2: Um, I'm going to stun you here. I didn't hate it.
- 35:30Speaker 5: Really?
- 35:30Speaker 2: I didn't hate it.
- 35:31Speaker 9: At that point in the game? I'm not telling you
- 35:34Speaker 9: I would have done it. Tie game, about five and
- 35:37Speaker 9: a half minutes left from his own 24. He goes
- 35:39Speaker 9: for a four. His thought process is, I want to
- 35:41Speaker 9: make sure I get another possession.
- 35:42Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 35:44Speaker 2: I don't hate it.
- 35:45Speaker 9: I'm not telling you I would have done it. But
- 35:47Speaker 9: I understand what he was thinking. If I punt and
- 35:50Speaker 9: Green Bay drives, I don't see the ball again.
- 35:52Speaker 2: Right. They're going to take the rest of the clock.
- 35:55Speaker 2: They're going to kick a field goal and beat me.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Whereas if I.
- 35:57Speaker 9: Give them points, even if they score a touchdown, I'm
- 36:00Speaker 9: going to have three, three and a half minutes to
- 36:03Speaker 9: go down and match that. I'm going to have the
- 36:04Speaker 9: ball back again. And if I can hold them to three,
- 36:08Speaker 9: then I can have my chance to.
- 36:09Speaker 5: Get a touchdown. So that type of logic doesn't sound
- 36:11Speaker 5: like it's a Dan Campbell decision.
- 36:13Speaker 2: No, they're an analytics-based team.
- 36:15Speaker 8: Snaps for Dan Campbell.
- 36:17Speaker 2: I was so proud. Did you not hate it either?
- 36:19Speaker 5: Did you?
- 36:20Speaker 8: Of course I loved it.
- 36:22Speaker 5: Obviously.
- 36:23Speaker 2: I'm not willing to go love it. I'm not willing
- 36:25Speaker 2: to go loved it.
- 36:26Speaker 4: But like a coach that like actually got up and
- 36:29Speaker 4: explained like the logic behind it and not just.
- 36:33Speaker 2: You know, we always just like we could pick it.
- 36:35Speaker 4: Default to it's some spreadsheet and some nerd that told
- 36:39Speaker 4: him to go for it.
- 36:40Speaker 2: And like, he at least like got up at the podium.
- 36:42Speaker 4: And see any of this and explained the logic behind it,
- 36:46Speaker 4: which is exactly what Paul just laid out. It's a
- 36:48Speaker 4: possession game at that point of like, are you going
- 36:50Speaker 4: to get another possession or not? And they felt like
- 36:53Speaker 4: it was worth the risk because they were going to
- 36:55Speaker 4: be able to answer whatever green Bay did with the
- 36:58Speaker 4: ball and on the back end and it played out exactly.
- 37:01Speaker 8: Now in this case, it worked perfectly.
- 37:02Speaker 13: Right.
- 37:03Speaker 4: You know, now it doesn't always work that way now,
- 37:05Speaker 4: but in this case it did.
- 37:06Speaker 9: He got lucky that they not only forced the three,
- 37:10Speaker 9: it should have been a touchdown.
- 37:10Speaker 2: Josh Jacobs dropped the touchdown pass. Um, so it should
- 37:14Speaker 2: have been a touchdown.
- 37:15Speaker 9: They get lucky that they held in the three and
- 37:16Speaker 9: then they actually get a piece of the field goal
- 37:18Speaker 9: and block the field goal. So they come away with nothing.
- 37:21Speaker 9: So that's best case scenario, but I think he was content.
- 37:25Speaker 9: to give up a score knowing that he would have
- 37:27Speaker 9: time to match it if, if need be. But I
- 37:32Speaker 9: just find it funny, like how many people, and I'm
- 37:35Speaker 9: not telling you, you need to agree with the logic,
- 37:38Speaker 9: but I came in, you know, I'm watching red zone
- 37:40Speaker 9: with Beth, who is a casual football fan at best.
- 37:44Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 37:45Speaker 2: And I'm like, so what do you think she goes?
- 37:46Speaker 2: That's kind of crazy. Don't you think? And I, and
- 37:48Speaker 2: I told her what I thought.
- 37:50Speaker 9: I didn't know that, that Dan Campbell explained all that,
- 37:52Speaker 9: but it was kind of, to me, pretty clear what
- 37:55Speaker 9: he was thinking. And she goes, oh, that makes sense
- 37:57Speaker 9: because now they'll be able to go down. I come
- 37:59Speaker 9: in and I talk to Mike the next morning. I go,
- 38:01Speaker 9: so I'm not asking you if you agree or not.
- 38:04Speaker 9: I was like, what do you think they were doing?
- 38:05Speaker 9: He goes, well, they just want to make sure they
- 38:06Speaker 9: got the ball back.
- 38:08Speaker 1: He fist bumped me.
- 38:10Speaker 2: It's not that hard to figure it out, right? I
- 38:12Speaker 2: don't think you need to be a ball knower to
- 38:14Speaker 2: understand with five minutes. You should have heard some of
- 38:18Speaker 2: the people on the radio yesterday talking about he should
- 38:21Speaker 2: be fired.
- 38:22Speaker 9: That's an egregious mistake. That's a reckless, you know, like
- 38:27Speaker 9: put the team in that kind of like you don't understand. Like, again,
- 38:31Speaker 9: you don't have to agree with his decision. But you
- 38:34Speaker 9: don't understand it? You don't understand what he was doing?
- 38:36Speaker 9: I don't know how you don't understand it.
- 38:40Speaker 2: To me, it's blatantly obvious.
- 38:41Speaker 9: He was like, it's only going to take them a
- 38:44Speaker 9: minute or two from the 25-yard line as opposed to
- 38:47Speaker 9: the last five minutes of the game if I punt
- 38:49Speaker 9: and make him go 70 yards.
- 38:51Speaker 5: It's like letting someone score at the end of the game.
- 38:54Speaker 2: It's not that different. It's the same thing.
- 38:56Speaker 4: I just think, and I think everybody is complicit in this,
- 39:00Speaker 4: I don't think we do a great job of explaining
- 39:05Speaker 4: what is analytics when is it an analytic call when
- 39:08Speaker 4: is it not an analytic call and all that i
- 39:11Speaker 4: think everybody just assumes that every single time the mass
- 39:14Speaker 4: has to go for it on fourth but but that's
- 39:16Speaker 4: not the case.
- 39:16Speaker 5: But to do what he did is that saying that
- 39:19Speaker 5: i don't have faith in my defense.
- 39:23Speaker 9: I think it's saying i have faith in my offense
- 39:25Speaker 9: to match whatever i have to give up i don't
- 39:27Speaker 9: think it has anything.
- 39:28Speaker 5: To do with the defense there is a chance you
- 39:29Speaker 5: can stop him right like.
- 39:34Speaker 9: I mean yeah there's always a chance you could stop
- 39:36Speaker 9: him yeah so he's but he's guaranteeing and instead of
- 39:40Speaker 9: taking a risk that I'm going to get another possession
- 39:42Speaker 9: he's guaranteeing he gets another possession right I'll take that
- 39:46Speaker 9: right but Do you know what I'm saying?
- 39:48Speaker 5: I do. I know exactly what you're saying. But, you know,
- 39:51Speaker 5: you could also say, all right, we make it. We
- 39:54Speaker 5: convert the fourth and one or whatever.
- 39:56Speaker 2: Which, by the way, that deserves criticism. A horrific play
- 39:59Speaker 2: call by, what's his name? Petzig.
- 40:02Speaker 5: So you convert it. there's no guarantee you're going to
- 40:05Speaker 5: drive all that length of the field because you're on
- 40:07Speaker 5: your own 24. So there's risks both ways.
- 40:11Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 40:12Speaker 5: For sure.
- 40:12Speaker 4: I think that it was a borderline, you know, math
- 40:15Speaker 4: call because, and I think Ryan Pagnetti put this out there,
- 40:20Speaker 4: like it was fourth in like a yard and a half.
- 40:23Speaker 4: So it's kind of too far to sneak it. So
- 40:25Speaker 4: like sneaks, if you're a good sneak team, especially are
- 40:28Speaker 4: just like, 90% success rate or something crazy like that.
- 40:31Speaker 4: So if you have it in, like, fourth inside of
- 40:34Speaker 4: one and you can sneak it, then it's a clear
- 40:36Speaker 4: go situation. That was right on the border of, like,
- 40:40Speaker 4: this is almost two full yards that we have to
- 40:42Speaker 4: get here.
- 40:43Speaker 6: Right.
- 40:43Speaker 4: And is it, you know, so that was, that one was, like,
- 40:47Speaker 4: I would say the math would probably slightly lean go, but, like,
- 40:50Speaker 4: it wasn't a, it was a toss-up.
- 40:51Speaker 5: It's not like Goff is the best.
- 40:53Speaker 2: No, they're not a good sneak team because Goff's not
- 40:56Speaker 2: a really good quarterback.
- 40:56Speaker 5: By the way.
- 40:57Speaker 2: Mm-hmm.
- 40:58Speaker 5: I know you have the ear of the quarterback. Can
- 41:00Speaker 5: you tell him to tell Josh, second and one, no
- 41:04Speaker 5: more sneaks. You got the whole playbook at your, you know.
- 41:07Speaker 2: This one was particularly good. They didn't get it.
- 41:09Speaker 5: Yeah. So, like, second and one, let's try to do
- 41:12Speaker 5: something more than just get the first down.
- 41:15Speaker 8: I'll pass the note along.
- 41:17Speaker 5: Okay.
- 41:17Speaker 2: Just, you know. Politely.
- 41:19Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 41:19Speaker 5: For your father.
- 41:21Speaker 2: Yeah. For your father.
- 41:23Speaker 6: All right.
- 41:24Speaker 5: So that, yeah. And then there was another call in
- 41:26Speaker 5: that game, you know, that went against the Packers. I
- 41:29Speaker 5: forget what it was that it was just like, are
- 41:30Speaker 5: you kidding me?
- 41:31Speaker 2: There was a couple of bad penalty calls against the
- 41:33Speaker 2: Packers in that game. Oh, the intentional grounding.
- 41:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 41:36Speaker 2: Well, that was a tough call.
- 41:37Speaker 5: It was a terrible call. It was definitely in the
- 41:39Speaker 5: direction of a.
- 41:41Speaker 2: I just... It's a penalty that sort of draws my.
- 41:46Speaker 9: Roughly every passer in intentional grounding, the lack of consistency
- 41:50Speaker 9: with the way it's called.
- 41:53Speaker 2: Is troubling when you just watch these games. The worst
- 41:56Speaker 2: call of the weekend came in the game that you
- 41:57Speaker 2: were watching, the Bengals-Ravens. There was a guy for the Ravens,
- 42:02Speaker 2: I think it was Maffe, Boya Maffe, got cut blocked
- 42:06Speaker 2: on a screen.
- 42:07Speaker 5: Right, he got put, right?
- 42:08Speaker 2: He got cut to the ground.
- 42:10Speaker 3: Right.
- 42:11Speaker 2: And he fell. And the pulling guy for the... Did
- 42:13Speaker 2: you see this, Ev? The pulling guy for the Ravens
- 42:15Speaker 2: is coming around and fell over him.
- 42:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 42:17Speaker 9: And they called Mafe for cutting the legs out of
- 42:20Speaker 9: a blocker, which you're not allowed to do.
- 42:22Speaker 2: That's a penalty.
- 42:23Speaker 5: Right.
- 42:24Speaker 1: And just.
- 42:25Speaker 9: Zach Taylor was so mad that he called timeout to
- 42:28Speaker 9: keep yelling at the ref.
- 42:29Speaker 5: But the ref clearly states it has to be your
- 42:31Speaker 5: own impetus. It has to be your own impetus that
- 42:33Speaker 5: does it.
- 42:33Speaker 9: And, of course, they have the guys come on. It's
- 42:35Speaker 9: Serator and all these guys. And it's like, well, if
- 42:38Speaker 9: he's doing it, I'm like, you see it.
- 42:40Speaker 5: What do you think?
- 42:41Speaker 2: Do you think he did that on purpose?
- 42:43Speaker 4: I just don't understand why we have replay assist if
- 42:45Speaker 4: it's not going to assist.
- 42:46Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 42:48Speaker 4: On calls like that that are egregiously wrong calls, it
- 42:52Speaker 4: happens quick. You saw the guy flash. You saw the
- 42:56Speaker 4: guy get cut down. You thought it was an illegal situation.
- 42:59Speaker 5: It wasn't.
- 43:02Speaker 2: Pick up the flag. Let's move on.
- 43:04Speaker 4: You know, like grounding, I do think they do have
- 43:07Speaker 4: some replay assists because they usually wait a beat to
- 43:10Speaker 4: make the call. But that's another one where it's like,
- 43:13Speaker 4: all right, is there anybody in the area? Is he
- 43:14Speaker 4: outside the tackle box? Like those are hard things to
- 43:17Speaker 4: officiate in real time. So let's use replay assists to assist.
- 43:22Speaker 5: Then the other, it isn't pros, but the week, the Saturday,
- 43:26Speaker 5: did you watch the BYU game?
- 43:28Speaker 2: The BYU-UCF game?
- 43:30Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 43:30Speaker 2: And UCF decided to go for it from the one-yard line?
- 43:33Speaker 5: Did you watch that? I didn't see it.
- 43:34Speaker 2: I heard about it.
- 43:35Speaker 5: I mean, there was a call. I mean, at the end,
- 43:37Speaker 5: chaos ensued. Like, the refs completely lost control.
- 43:40Speaker 2: Oh, I didn't know the refs were involved.
- 43:42Speaker 5: Oh, it was just nuts at the end.
- 43:43Speaker 9: Tie game in the last minute and a half, and
- 43:46Speaker 9: it's fourth and goal from the one. And instead of
- 43:48Speaker 9: kicking the field goal to take the lead, they went
- 43:50Speaker 9: for it and got stopped.
- 43:51Speaker 5: Well, but... At the end, UCF has a chance to
- 43:56Speaker 5: kick a field goal. The field goal gets blocked. The
- 43:59Speaker 5: kicker recovers the ball and starts to run. They literally
- 44:04Speaker 5: take his helmet in a headlock and rip his helmet off.
- 44:08Speaker 5: He gets kicked out of the game. He has to
- 44:10Speaker 5: leave the game for play because his helmet came off.
- 44:12Speaker 5: It's like, where's the penalty? I couldn't believe it. They
- 44:16Speaker 5: literally had him around the helmet.
- 44:17Speaker 2: Was the field goal the last play of the game?
- 44:20Speaker 5: No, it wasn't the last play game because he ended
- 44:22Speaker 5: up coming back to do another kick afterwards.
- 44:24Speaker 8: Well, you only have to sit for one play.
- 44:26Speaker 5: Just for one play. But I'm saying it was a penalty.
- 44:30Speaker 5: They ripped his helmet off.
- 44:31Speaker 2: I understand, but he still has to come off the field.
- 44:34Speaker 5: No, I understand that, but what I'm saying is.
- 44:36Speaker 2: Well, no, that's not true.
- 44:38Speaker 9: If they rule it's a penalty, then the guy does
- 44:41Speaker 9: not have to leave the field.
- 44:42Speaker 8: I don't see what difference that makes, but sure.
- 44:44Speaker 5: Because they're trying to buckle up his chin strap. Right,
- 44:47Speaker 5: they don't keep it... tight enough they're right that's why
- 44:50Speaker 5: i guess they're trying to encourage.
- 44:51Speaker 2: These guys the helmet comes off the helmet comes.
- 44:53Speaker 5: Off it shouldn't come off by itself yeah that's the
- 44:56Speaker 5: point yeah this did not they ripped it off the
- 44:58Speaker 5: guy had him like this and tugged and it came
- 45:01Speaker 5: off and there's no flag.
- 45:04Speaker 4: No flag i don't know anyway don't even bother with
- 45:08Speaker 4: the college game this is why.
- 45:10Speaker 5: Don't bother with the college game. Mini Belichick over here.
- 45:14Speaker 5: He's literally coaching in college. Obviously, I was rooting for
- 45:18Speaker 5: UCF to pull the upset.
- 45:22Speaker 2: But anyway.
- 45:22Speaker 5: All right. Anything else over the weekend that struck out
- 45:26Speaker 5: to you?
- 45:27Speaker 2: Patrick Mahomes versus Seattle's defense. I'm just enjoying.
- 45:29Speaker 8: Made me feel a little bit better.
- 45:30Speaker 14: Yeah, yeah.
- 45:31Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 45:32Speaker 5: That was... They're pretty good, you know.
- 45:34Speaker 2: Fun watch.
- 45:35Speaker 8: He looked worse than Drake did.
- 45:36Speaker 14: Yeah.
- 45:36Speaker 4: At least Drake may have played good for three quarters
- 45:38Speaker 4: and then fell apart. He didn't even play good at
- 45:41Speaker 4: any point.
- 45:41Speaker 2: In that game.
- 45:41Speaker 5: Everyone's saying now that they're too dependent on Kenneth Walker.
- 45:46Speaker 9: Well, they were missing... They don't have any of their players, right?
- 45:51Speaker 9: Wasn't Rice out of that game and now Thornton's out?
- 45:53Speaker 2: I mean, I know that... So.
- 45:56Speaker 2: What are we doing? Dobbs is out. We're talking about that.
- 46:00Speaker 5: I would hope Dobbs is better than Thornton. Well, no.
- 46:04Speaker 2: The stats wouldn't indicate that. Had a very big game.
- 46:09Speaker 5: But it's good for them to lose. That's a good thing.
- 46:11Speaker 2: I just thought it was.
- 46:12Speaker 5: What about those Giants?
- 46:14Speaker 2: No. JJ. So that ends my little Houston experiment.
- 46:18Speaker 9: Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was a big takeaway from the weekend.
- 46:21Speaker 9: I thought Houston had signs of life. And they could
- 46:24Speaker 9: do what they did last year, but now I would
- 46:26Speaker 9: say it's just not happening for them this year.
- 46:28Speaker 5: When's the last time a running back got called for
- 46:32Speaker 5: using his helmet?
- 46:33Speaker 9: Another egregiously bad call, even though he does do that.
- 46:36Speaker 9: And I've seen running backs get called for that, but
- 46:39Speaker 9: put that away.
- 46:40Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 46:41Speaker 5: I agree. I was always taught when you go into,
- 46:44Speaker 5: you lower your head.
- 46:45Speaker 2: Yeah, sure. He did it.
- 46:46Speaker 5: You know?
- 46:46Speaker 8: You were taught to lower your head?
- 46:47Speaker 5: Well, you're supposed to use your shoulder pads to get through.
- 46:50Speaker 5: I mean, you're not using your head, but you lower.
- 46:52Speaker 5: You get small. He uses his head intentionally.
- 46:55Speaker 8: Tuck your chin. This is why we have a concussion problem.
- 46:59Speaker 2: Like, lowering your head is one thing. I think he
- 47:01Speaker 2: invites contact with his head.
- 47:02Speaker 5: Oh, he lowers it.
- 47:03Speaker 2: And I think that's why he gets called for it.
- 47:04Speaker 2: He can't get enough. He uses it as a weapon. Yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 2: I know.
- 47:07Speaker 5: That's when he's in his hamstring, too, on a play.
- 47:10Speaker 5: He wouldn't admit it.
- 47:11Speaker 2: He did. No, he said that's why he pulled up
- 47:13Speaker 2: in overtime.
- 47:14Speaker 5: Oh, yeah, yeah. But on the sideline, he was telling
- 47:16Speaker 5: people to get away from him.
- 47:17Speaker 9: He had a 42-yard run in overtime that the next
- 47:20Speaker 9: play was a 30-yard. Like, say with everything that's wrong
- 47:23Speaker 9: with Houston, you know, they gave up 72 yards on
- 47:26Speaker 9: two runs in overtime.
- 47:27Speaker 4: I just can't believe what's happened to that Texans defense. And, like,
- 47:31Speaker 4: if you're the Texans and that, like, how does– D'Amico Ryan's.
- 47:35Speaker 8: Like, I don't know.
- 47:35Speaker 5: Inexplicable.
- 47:36Speaker 2: Because CJ Stroud's playing really well. Yeah. Yeah.
- 47:40Speaker 4: He's playing really well and their defense is completely falling apart.
- 47:44Speaker 4: And I can't really put my finger on why other than,
- 47:47Speaker 4: you know, they did change out some of their safeties,
- 47:50Speaker 4: but in.
- 47:50Speaker 2: The off season, but like he's been hurt.
- 47:53Speaker 5: Oh yes. I don't know.
- 47:55Speaker 4: It just, it seems like they still have most of
- 47:57Speaker 4: the talent, Stingley, Anderson, Hunter.
- 48:00Speaker 2: Lasseter's not played well.
- 48:01Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 48:01Speaker 2: That's the guy. uh, Kamari Lasseter.
- 48:04Speaker 4: He's like, well, he's their other corner.
- 48:06Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 48:07Speaker 1: He's, he's not Stingley's played either though. Right.
- 48:10Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 48:10Speaker 4: I think the whole, I mean, the whole day, but
- 48:12Speaker 4: like Will Anderson's been good, but like, you know, that defense,
- 48:16Speaker 4: like that is one of the biggest one eighties I've
- 48:20Speaker 4: seen from year to year from expectation, like all of
- 48:22Speaker 4: the above of a, of a unit just completely falling apart.
- 48:26Speaker 4: Like you watch Seattle on Sunday night and they're as
- 48:29Speaker 4: dominant as ever defensively name and worries everywhere. And like,
- 48:32Speaker 4: It's the same old Seattle, and this Texans defense is
- 48:35Speaker 4: just completely falling apart.
- 48:36Speaker 5: Yep. All right. Time for a break. I see your calls.
- 48:41Speaker 5: I see your emails. We'll get to that right after this.

- 50:43Speaker 1: Age and eligibility varies by jurisdiction.
- 50:45Speaker 4: There's a couple of guys, Greg Van Roten, one of
- 50:49Speaker 4: them eligible to be put on the clock.
- 50:51Speaker 2: Will we see him this week?
- 50:54Speaker 11: Probably won't see him today, but maybe this week we'll
- 50:57Speaker 11: see where that goes. Those guys, I think him and
- 50:59Speaker 11: Dell are eligible potentially to try to get back out
- 51:03Speaker 11: there and kind of see where that goes. But we'll
- 51:08Speaker 11: have to make a decision with Marcus Bryant. So probably
- 51:13Speaker 11: get us through today here and see where guys progress
- 51:15Speaker 11: and go from there.
- 51:17Speaker 1: Mike, what goes into managing IR for you the rest
- 51:20Speaker 1: of the season with the limited number of return spots?
- 51:24Speaker 11: Probably just the depth that you have at the position
- 51:28Speaker 11: or the need. And I don't think it's something that
- 51:32Speaker 11: you really want to make a habit of, but we're
- 51:35Speaker 11: in the position that we are. So kind of figuring out, one,
- 51:40Speaker 11: who's healthy, who's healthy enough to return. Some guys aren't.
- 51:45Speaker 11: And then we'll see where... where we go with the
- 51:48Speaker 11: depth at each position.
- 51:49Speaker 3: Is there a report that you guys moved on from Bryce?
- 51:51Speaker 5: I'm sorry?
- 51:52Speaker 3: Is there a report out there that you guys decided
- 51:54Speaker 3: to move on from Bryce Berninger as the punter? Can
- 51:57Speaker 3: you comment on that?
- 52:00Speaker 11: I mean, I think that I certainly appreciate what Bryce
- 52:03Speaker 11: has been able to do for us, and.
- 52:04Speaker 5: I think just.
- 52:07Speaker 11: That was... Those are tough decisions. I don't think those
- 52:10Speaker 11: are things that you necessarily take lightly, but... Once you
- 52:15Speaker 11: kind of get the specialists and the snap and the
- 52:19Speaker 11: hold and all the stuff that they do. We just
- 52:24Speaker 11: felt like this was best for us and best for
- 52:26Speaker 11: Bryce and give him an opportunity to kind of go
- 52:30Speaker 11: punt and see if somebody needs a punter. If we
- 52:33Speaker 11: would need him back and he was there, we would
- 52:36Speaker 11: want to have him back. You kind of make a
- 52:40Speaker 11: decision with a specialist and as long as it's going well,
- 52:44Speaker 11: which I think it is and.
- 52:45Speaker 5: Everybody else does.
- 52:46Speaker 11: You kind of just stick with it.
- 52:48Speaker 7: How much do you want to take care of a
- 52:49Speaker 7: guy like Bryce in that situation too, Mike, for what
- 52:52Speaker 7: he's meant to be?
- 52:52Speaker 11: Well, I mean, I think it's kind of twofold. It's
- 52:54Speaker 11: just give him an opportunity to go kick and have
- 52:57Speaker 11: an opportunity to go work out. You know, there's a
- 53:00Speaker 11: lot of things that he'll be able to do now
- 53:04Speaker 11: not being on IR.
- 53:06Speaker 7: Mike, do you have anything to say about Josh Muschnowski?
- 53:11Speaker 7: I'm sorry, Mitch. Monday, yeah.
- 53:17Speaker 11: This was a while ago. Mitch punted a lot of
- 53:20Speaker 11: games in the National Football League.
- 53:22Speaker 5: He could flip the field.
- 53:24Speaker 3: I think he gets it off quickly.
- 53:25Speaker 2: I think the plus 50s have improved.
- 53:27Speaker 11: He's got different punts and different kicks that he uses,
- 53:42Speaker 11: and I think he's been pretty consistent.
- 53:44Speaker 5: I think the hang time's been pretty good.
- 53:48Speaker 8: Is that something that you guys are hopeful that it's
- 53:54Speaker 8: a short-term thing?
- 53:57Speaker 11: I don't think it's for the season, but I couldn't
- 53:59Speaker 11: tell you what short-term is determined by however many weeks
- 54:05Speaker 11: he has to be out, but I don't think it's
- 54:09Speaker 11: going to be– it wasn't going to be this week,
- 54:12Speaker 11: so we figured it was going to be at least
- 54:13Speaker 11: four games, so that's why we made the decision that
- 54:15Speaker 11: we made.
- 54:16Speaker 3: As far.
- 54:19Speaker 2: As your $ 250, 000 fine, how is that explained to you?
- 54:24Speaker 11: I don't have any comment. It was– those things are
- 54:28Speaker 11: supposed to be held in strict confidence, confidentiality, so I'm
- 54:33Speaker 11: not going to comment. Again, I'm not going to comment.
- 54:37Speaker 11: I can't.
- 54:38Speaker 2: Not supposed to.
- 54:39Speaker 3: Are you under the impression that could be rescinded with
- 54:41Speaker 3: good behavior?
- 54:42Speaker 5: I can't comment.
- 54:43Speaker 11: I think as best as to talk to the lead,
- 54:45Speaker 11: they seem to have plenty to say already about it.
- 54:48Speaker 11: So I, I just really, I would say this about
- 54:53Speaker 11: the officiating and I've said this numerous times.
- 54:55Speaker 5: It is.
- 54:57Speaker 11: The second hardest thing to do on Sundays is, is
- 55:00Speaker 11: officiate and they do a great job and it's not easy. Um,
- 55:05Speaker 11: and we have to understand, They're part of the game.
- 55:11Speaker 11: I think that they do, like everybody else, the best
- 55:15Speaker 11: that they possibly can. There's going to be bad calls
- 55:18Speaker 11: by coaches. There's going to be bad plays by players.
- 55:21Speaker 11: Once in a while, an official is going to miss one. Again,
- 55:24Speaker 11: how we respond to those things is critical. I enjoy
- 55:30Speaker 11: when they have conversations with me and can explain exactly
- 55:36Speaker 11: what it is that they saw or they follow up
- 55:38Speaker 11: with another official. And, you know, as long as I
- 55:41Speaker 11: get an explanation about what they saw, then I have
- 55:44Speaker 11: to be okay with that. And I would say for
- 55:46Speaker 11: the most part I am, and I like the ones
- 55:49Speaker 11: that are willing to communicate and say, hey, this is
- 55:50Speaker 11: what I saw. And they did it, and they're decisive
- 55:53Speaker 11: about it, and they're confident. And, you know, we can
- 55:56Speaker 11: always go back and second guess, but it's not an
- 55:59Speaker 11: easy job, and I think they do really good.
- 56:02Speaker 7: Even though the game was Thursday half of Monday?
- 56:09Speaker 11: There?
- 56:09Speaker 2: Why was that the choice?
- 56:13Speaker 11: Try to be aggressive. I mean, it's like something that
- 56:17Speaker 11: we felt like we want to continue to do. We'd
- 56:22Speaker 11: like to have better execution, but we've had a lot
- 56:28Speaker 11: of success doing that, so I don't want to be
- 56:32Speaker 11: a results-based analytics person here. We didn't get it, so
- 56:40Speaker 11: we shouldn't have gone for it. We've had a lot
- 56:43Speaker 11: of success with that, and that's something that we feel
- 56:46Speaker 11: like we can kind of work our way across midfield,
- 56:50Speaker 11: and once we're in that area, there's things that we like,
- 56:53Speaker 11: and we've done well there. It's disappointing that we weren't
- 56:57Speaker 11: able to get it, but I would imagine we'll still
- 57:01Speaker 11: try to continue to do it.
- 57:02Speaker 2: Obviously, drafted by Tennessee in 22, I just what was
- 57:07Speaker 2: it like working with him?
- 57:08Speaker 11: It was great. Malik was, um, you know, he's continued
- 57:12Speaker 11: to develop and, uh, that, that's the thing that, uh,
- 57:15Speaker 11: you know, I'm, I'm proud of him for, and I
- 57:18Speaker 11: know that he should be proud of himself to continue to,
- 57:21Speaker 11: to battle and go to green Bay. And, you know,
- 57:24Speaker 11: I try to stay in communication with him and tell
- 57:26Speaker 11: him congrats and that I'm happy for him. And then
- 57:28Speaker 11: he gets a deal in Miami and, you know, he's talented,
- 57:32Speaker 11: very talented. He's a, He's got a strong arm, can
- 57:35Speaker 11: throw at different platforms. He's a strong runner. I think
- 57:40Speaker 11: he's starting to see things a little quicker, a little clearer,
- 57:44Speaker 11: just as he's developed in the NFL.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Drake made several plays kind of off script the other night.
- 57:53Speaker 5: How valuable is that skill set for you guys?
- 57:56Speaker 11: I think you see it on the other side of
- 57:58Speaker 11: the game there offensively for Chicago. Just looking back and
- 58:05Speaker 11: the plays that Caleb made off script and certainly value
- 58:09Speaker 11: that from from Drake and his ability to extend plays.
- 58:12Speaker 11: And sometimes you can't block them all or sometimes you
- 58:15Speaker 11: don't block them very well at all. And sometimes somebody
- 58:18Speaker 11: makes play and Drake extends and either runs or keeps
- 58:21Speaker 11: his eyes down the field like he did a few
- 58:23Speaker 11: times there when we needed to have some plays.
- 58:27Speaker 2: How have you felt about AJ's performance in the run game?
- 58:31Speaker 11: Well, we know it takes all 11, and I wouldn't say,
- 58:34Speaker 11: you know, receiver's job is critical to be able to
- 58:38Speaker 11: protect the guy who has the ball and how well
- 58:39Speaker 11: they play without the ball. So I would say offensively
- 58:45Speaker 11: we have to do a better job, and that includes A.J.,
- 58:48Speaker 11: that includes the quarterback coming out with play fakes, and,
- 58:52Speaker 11: you know, that's what it takes in the run game.
- 58:55Speaker 3: It's Legal Seafood's Fresh Take of the Week.
- 58:58Speaker 15: Seafoods is giving fans a true taste of Boston this
- 59:06Speaker 15: season as the official seafood restaurant of the New England Patriots.
- 59:10Speaker 5: Pre-game or post-game, get the seafood you love at your
- 59:13Speaker 5: local restaurant today, LegalSeafoods.com. Paul, you got a fresh take
- 59:18Speaker 5: for us?
- 59:18Speaker 9: I'm completely unprepared, but I'll tell you I'm going to
- 59:21Speaker 9: come up with one off the top of my head.
- 59:22Speaker 2: Here's my fresh take. Get right game for the offense.
- 59:26Speaker 9: It's going to be an explosion against that overmatched young
- 59:30Speaker 9: Miami Dolphins defense. I think they're playing hard for Jeff Halfley.
- 59:34Speaker 9: They just don't have the horses yet, and they don't
- 59:36Speaker 9: have the experience. I think this is going to be
- 59:38Speaker 9: a career day for Drake May. That's my fresh take
- 59:40Speaker 9: of the day.
- 59:41Speaker 5: Okay. I love it.
- 59:42Speaker 2: I like that.
- 59:43Speaker 5: And it's Dolphins and seafood. There you go. Let's eat.
- 59:47Speaker 5: Let's eat Miami.
- 59:48Speaker 2: Because you often think of dolphin when you think of seafood.
- 59:50Speaker 5: Well, no. There is two types of dolphin, Paul. There's
- 59:54Speaker 5: the mammal dolphin and the fish dolphin. And fish dolphin
- 59:57Speaker 5: is very good to eat.
- 59:59Speaker 2: Now, which one is a porpoise?
- 1:00:00Speaker 5: That's a mammal dolphin.
- 1:00:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:00:03Speaker 5: That's a mammal dolphin.
- 1:00:03Speaker 8: I'm not eating dolphin.
- 1:00:05Speaker 5: Bottlenose. But mahi-mahi, I believe, is a type of dolphin.
- 1:00:10Speaker 8: Oh, so then I would eat dolphin.
- 1:00:11Speaker 5: Really?
- 1:00:11Speaker 2: I always thought that was tuna.
- 1:00:13Speaker 5: Maybe I'm wrong, but There is a fish that's a
- 1:00:16Speaker 5: dolphin that is very active.
- 1:00:18Speaker 8: I'm not sure.
- 1:00:19Speaker 2: Let's look it up.
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: Did you get the fried dolphin roll?
- 1:00:21Speaker 5: Let's look it up.
- 1:00:22Speaker 2: The fried dolphin roll.
- 1:00:24Speaker 5: I'm fairly confident that dolphin is a really good fish.
- 1:00:27Speaker 2: I always thought mahi-mahi was like a tuna.
- 1:00:30Speaker 5: It's a mahi-mahi.
- 1:00:31Speaker 2: This is going to be great.
- 1:00:32Speaker 3: The dolphin fish is also the mahi-mahi.
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: I did not know that.
- 1:00:36Speaker 2: But it's known as the dolphin fish, but it's its
- 1:00:39Speaker 2: own type of fish.
- 1:00:40Speaker 3: It's actually known as the mahi-mahi. Dolphin fish is its
- 1:00:42Speaker 3: real name.
- 1:00:43Speaker 11: Right.
- 1:00:44Speaker 2: Really? So it's called dolphin fish, but it's not a dolphin.
- 1:00:46Speaker 1: But it's good eating.
- 1:00:47Speaker 5: No, it's a dolphin fish. That's what it's called.
- 1:00:51Speaker 3: No, it's not the size of a dolphin, but the
- 1:00:53Speaker 3: fish is shaped like a dolphin.
- 1:00:54Speaker 5: The dolphins we, you know, flipper is the dolphin we know.
- 1:00:58Speaker 5: It's a, you know, porpoise. It's a dolphin with a porpoise.
- 1:01:05Speaker 13: Okay.
- 1:01:05Speaker 2: I see what you did there.
- 1:01:07Speaker 5: All right.
- 1:01:08Speaker 2: Anyway, big week for Drake Bay.
- 1:01:10Speaker 4: This is probably the worst pass defense in football that
- 1:01:14Speaker 4: they're playing on Sunday. Their tape against the Jets was.
- 1:01:18Speaker 5: Well, we'll talk about Miami tomorrow.
- 1:01:20Speaker 8: Oh, sorry.
- 1:01:21Speaker 5: We're not turning the page yet.
- 1:01:22Speaker 2: It smelled.
- 1:01:23Speaker 5: I want to get to our callers and emails at
- 1:01:25Speaker 5: this point.
- 1:01:25Speaker 2: It was really bad. Oh, yeah. Let's turn it over
- 1:01:27Speaker 2: to the listeners. They've been patiently waiting.
- 1:01:29Speaker 5: Yeah. So we'll start with... Let's see. Eric is in Pennsylvania.
- 1:01:34Speaker 5: What's up, Eric?
- 1:01:35Speaker 2: Eric.
- 1:01:38Speaker 5: Eric. See, you know, you try to go to them.
- 1:01:41Speaker 2: Not that patiently, evidently.
- 1:01:42Speaker 5: And they're just not ready. Disrespect. They're just not ready.
- 1:01:45Speaker 5: All right. What's trucking, Eldred? Eldred.
- 1:01:51Speaker 9: Hey.
- 1:01:53Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:01:53Speaker 11: Hey, fellas.
- 1:01:54Speaker 16: How y'all doing?
- 1:01:54Speaker 5: Good.
- 1:01:55Speaker 16: Hey, I just got a couple questions, and maybe y'all
- 1:01:58Speaker 16: could help me, especially the ball knower. Hey, okay. I
- 1:02:02Speaker 16: know we rank 30th on offensive line and run blocking,
- 1:02:05Speaker 16: but anybody want to blame Stevenson and– Henderson, you know,
- 1:02:08Speaker 16: Henderson do have a slight adjustment, a lineman that he
- 1:02:12Speaker 16: needed to adjust. But on those blitzes, I saw that
- 1:02:16Speaker 16: game again. They showed it again. I think it was
- 1:02:18Speaker 16: Sunday night or was it? Yeah, Sunday night, early Monday morning.
- 1:02:23Speaker 16: What a overpowered line and shootout. We don't have a
- 1:02:25Speaker 16: side adjuster like when pops see it, you know, hey, I'm,
- 1:02:29Speaker 16: you know, whatever for Drake May or maybe even A.J.
- 1:02:34Speaker 16: Instead of going down five yards and try to cut across,
- 1:02:36Speaker 16: make it do an end cut. They don't have no
- 1:02:38Speaker 16: sight adjustment like that when they see that, especially when
- 1:02:41Speaker 16: the corner's coming off the corner. And I leave it
- 1:02:44Speaker 16: at that, and I.
- 1:02:45Speaker 14: Take it off the air.
- 1:02:46Speaker 5: Okay, thanks, Eldrick.
- 1:02:47Speaker 2: They do have sight adjustments. Usually, you know, I think
- 1:02:54Speaker 2: that this is one of the things, and.
- 1:02:55Speaker 4: I love myself in this category as well, ultimate, we
- 1:03:00Speaker 4: can watch the film and we can break it down
- 1:03:01Speaker 4: and it's a lot of fun and it's cool.
- 1:03:03Speaker 2: We don't know the scheme. We don't know the play calls.
- 1:03:06Speaker 4: We don't know, uh, exactly what's actually going on, uh,
- 1:03:11Speaker 4: from that standpoint. And I, you know, I know Kurt
- 1:03:13Speaker 4: Warner put out a breakdown about site adjustments and all
- 1:03:15Speaker 4: this kind of stuff that they have site adjustments. Uh,
- 1:03:19Speaker 4: I think in this game, the bears did a good
- 1:03:21Speaker 4: job of popping out the rushers underneath a lot of
- 1:03:24Speaker 4: the hot routes that the Patriots were trying to run.
- 1:03:26Speaker 4: I guess you could make the argument that they need
- 1:03:28Speaker 4: to run better hot routes. Like they need to like
- 1:03:31Speaker 4: be more deceptive or, uh, you know, more multiple and how, uh,
- 1:03:36Speaker 4: who's running the hot route and all that kind of stuff. Um, but, uh,
- 1:03:40Speaker 4: they'd have all that kind of stuff. I think that
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: just from a, I guess, philosophical standpoint, they'd rather get
- 1:03:49Speaker 4: it blocked than throw hot against blitzes. So that's why
- 1:03:54Speaker 4: you see the split back formation and the seven man
- 1:03:57Speaker 4: pass protections and things like that. I think they would
- 1:04:00Speaker 4: rather try to adjust pre-snap the blocking to get hat
- 1:04:05Speaker 4: on hat versus Drake May staring down the barrel of
- 1:04:09Speaker 4: an unblocked blitzer and having to throw hot. But I
- 1:04:13Speaker 4: know that that was out there and I'm sure that
- 1:04:16Speaker 4: Drake May will get asked about it. Mike Rabel was
- 1:04:18Speaker 4: asked about it. And, you know, maybe they just need
- 1:04:21Speaker 4: to do a better job of executing.
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: Was that on the fourth down play right out of
- 1:04:24Speaker 1: the shoot when they got him with the corner blitz?
- 1:04:26Speaker 4: There was one specific one that they got him on
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: a free runner over the left side.
- 1:04:31Speaker 2: And A.J.
- 1:04:32Speaker 4: Brown was running a vertical. on the backside of the formation.
- 1:04:35Speaker 4: And there was a lot of space. If he had
- 1:04:37Speaker 4: run a curl, if he had run a slant, like any,
- 1:04:39Speaker 4: like anything else like that and cut off his route,
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: he was going to be wide open behind the blitz.
- 1:04:45Speaker 4: And he, he kept running up the field and that
- 1:04:48Speaker 4: brought out this whole, you know, why isn't he sight
- 1:04:50Speaker 4: adjusting and so on and so forth. So that's a
- 1:04:53Speaker 4: long winded answer, but the short answer is yes.
- 1:04:57Speaker 9: Remember when Brian Morey and when we used to have
- 1:04:59Speaker 9: the football games at Walpole Park South?
- 1:05:01Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:05:01Speaker 2: And we used to do the sight adjustment with Brian Morey?
- 1:05:03Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:05:03Speaker 2: He would be the quarterback, and you would give it one.
- 1:05:05Speaker 2: This was the sight adjustment. Hot route. Hot route. I
- 1:05:10Speaker 2: don't know what that means.
- 1:05:12Speaker 5: Sabah is in North Carolina. What's up, Sabah?
- 1:05:16Speaker 13: Hey there, guys. I got my T-shirt.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: I'm wearing it now.
- 1:05:20Speaker 2: Oh, good. Saw the pic.
- 1:05:21Speaker 5: Good. Great.
- 1:05:22Speaker 2: Thank you.
- 1:05:23Speaker 13: Thank you.
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: Thank you.
- 1:05:24Speaker 9: All right.
- 1:05:25Speaker 6: I got some things.
- 1:05:26Speaker 13: I was going to call right after the show, but
- 1:05:27Speaker 13: I'm like, I'm going to be angry if I call
- 1:05:30Speaker 13: after that game ended. So I'm calmed down a little bit,
- 1:05:33Speaker 13: but I'm still upset at one A.J. Clown, okay? He
- 1:05:37Speaker 13: is not helping his quarterback at all. And what I
- 1:05:40Speaker 13: don't like is the narrative, is even your coach, well,
- 1:05:44Speaker 13: we can't turn the ball over.
- 1:05:45Speaker 16: Well, you know what?
- 1:05:46Speaker 13: Caleb Williams took a sack he shouldn't have taken, and
- 1:05:49Speaker 13: his team bailed him out. Okay, so Drake throws an interception.
- 1:05:52Speaker 13: And does that mean they got to go 80 yards
- 1:05:54Speaker 13: and score a touchdown?
- 1:05:56Speaker 14: Is that what that means?
- 1:05:57Speaker 13: Like, he has to be perfect, but it's okay that
- 1:05:59Speaker 13: the defense can't tackle? I've never seen Gonzalez play a
- 1:06:02Speaker 13: game so poorly in my life. I think he may
- 1:06:04Speaker 13: have been sick. I'm going to give him a pass.
- 1:06:06Speaker 13: I mean, that guy Ellis missing of an assignment.
- 1:06:08Speaker 14: And then on the guy in the.
- 1:06:10Speaker 13: End zone, when you had him, you got to grab him.
- 1:06:12Speaker 13: And is he allowed to throw a pass into triple
- 1:06:16Speaker 13: coverage behind his right receiver? And his right receiver makes
- 1:06:19Speaker 13: the play. Drake Mays throws it in the hands of A.J.
- 1:06:22Speaker 2: Brown.
- 1:06:23Speaker 13: He does nothing with it. I don't understand what's going on.
- 1:06:26Speaker 13: It is getting late early. We got to start winning
- 1:06:29Speaker 13: these games. You notice I said we. Because everybody else
- 1:06:32Speaker 13: in the AFC has games they've won. If the playoffs
- 1:06:35Speaker 13: were today, the Patriots are not in it. You cannot
- 1:06:38Speaker 13: let these games go like this. This should have been
- 1:06:41Speaker 13: a victory.
- 1:06:44Speaker 9: I haven't seen a single person crap on Drake May
- 1:06:48Speaker 9: after that game. I don't know where this narrative is
- 1:06:51Speaker 9: coming from, but I've heard criticism of the defense. I've
- 1:06:54Speaker 9: heard criticism of the wide receivers. I've heard criticism of
- 1:06:58Speaker 9: going for fourth down in the first drive of the game,
- 1:07:01Speaker 9: which immediately put them behind. I haven't heard one single.
- 1:07:04Speaker 2: Person put this game on Drake.
- 1:07:06Speaker 5: It was a bad throw on the pick, but people
- 1:07:08Speaker 5: are saying, but besides that, Drake had a good game.
- 1:07:11Speaker 9: And I actually think they're being a little kind, because
- 1:07:14Speaker 9: I think he got really hot in the middle of
- 1:07:16Speaker 9: the game. I think he started kind of slow, and
- 1:07:19Speaker 9: he kind of fizzled at the end.
- 1:07:20Speaker 5: Yeah, but Caleb messed up toward the end.
- 1:07:23Speaker 13: It just got covered up.
- 1:07:24Speaker 5: Well, what I would agree with you, Sabah, is the
- 1:07:27Speaker 5: defense didn't, help out thing.
- 1:07:29Speaker 9: No, it was all Drake May. I think Evan said
- 1:07:31Speaker 9: it perfectly in the first hour of the show. It's
- 1:07:33Speaker 9: like everything in that game was basically on Drake May's shoulders.
- 1:07:36Speaker 5: Yeah, and Valentin from Switzerland would agree. He said, we
- 1:07:40Speaker 5: didn't lose the game because of Drake's pick. We lost
- 1:07:43Speaker 5: the game because we couldn't move the ball in the
- 1:07:45Speaker 5: fourth quarter when it mattered with the game on the line.
- 1:07:47Speaker 5: I find that more worrisome.
- 1:07:49Speaker 9: I would agree that that's more worrisome, but you lost
- 1:07:52Speaker 9: the game because you couldn't stop Chicago the whole night.
- 1:07:54Speaker 5: Yeah. I mean.
- 1:07:58Speaker 9: The game kind of unfolded the way a lot of
- 1:08:00Speaker 9: people thought. It was going to be a high-scoring game.
- 1:08:02Speaker 9: I think I picked 31-27.
- 1:08:05Speaker 2: It's 30-24, so we're in the neighborhood. They needed to
- 1:08:10Speaker 2: come up with a stop or two.
- 1:08:12Speaker 4: And not just a stop, like a stop that, like,
- 1:08:17Speaker 4: a complimentary football stop. Like stopping the drive after 13
- 1:08:21Speaker 4: plays in field goal range is to me is like, okay,
- 1:08:26Speaker 4: you stop the drive, but you had two opportunities on
- 1:08:29Speaker 4: the other side of the 50 to get off the
- 1:08:31Speaker 4: field on third down and you didn't stop the drive.
- 1:08:34Speaker 4: Then it's not just the field position.
- 1:08:36Speaker 8: It's the, it's the time.
- 1:08:37Speaker 2: Do you know what the time of possession was in
- 1:08:39Speaker 2: the fourth quarter? Six minutes in that 12 and a
- 1:08:41Speaker 2: half minutes.
- 1:08:42Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:08:43Speaker 2: To two and a half minutes.
- 1:08:44Speaker 4: It's not just the field position of getting the stop
- 1:08:48Speaker 4: on third and nine backed up. It's also the game
- 1:08:52Speaker 4: clock and how much time is left in the game.
- 1:08:54Speaker 4: So that being a 13-play drive, yes, it didn't end
- 1:08:57Speaker 4: in points because they missed the field goal. but that's
- 1:09:00Speaker 4: still like a big drive in the game that they
- 1:09:02Speaker 4: went on.
- 1:09:03Speaker 5: Carter in Indiana, first-time emailer, listening for a long time
- 1:09:07Speaker 5: as a Northwest Indiana resident. This past loss earned me
- 1:09:11Speaker 5: a lot of jeers from all the Bears fans around here.
- 1:09:14Speaker 5: I was glad we hung around, but the halftime buzzer
- 1:09:17Speaker 5: beater really made it look better than it was. I
- 1:09:19Speaker 5: feel as though Drake did good with ball security, but
- 1:09:22Speaker 5: just looks like he's suffocating sometimes out there, especially compared
- 1:09:26Speaker 5: to Caleb Williams this week. Also, the jump ball to A.J.
- 1:09:29Speaker 5: Brown upset me because it barely looked like he tried
- 1:09:32Speaker 5: for the ball, probably because of the ankle. Last thing
- 1:09:35Speaker 5: I want to ask. A few weeks ago, you were
- 1:09:37Speaker 5: talking about uniforms and the socks not being correct. Do
- 1:09:41Speaker 5: you guys remember the Zoltan Mesko sock gate fiasco? I
- 1:09:45Speaker 5: do not. I don't.
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: I remember Zoltan Mesko, but.
- 1:09:47Speaker 2: I do not either. I fail to remember that.
- 1:09:49Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:09:51Speaker 1: Can I ask a question about the defense, though, guys? Like,
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: I know we've talked about turnovers in the past, and
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: I just... I don't know what the answer is of...
- 1:09:58Speaker 1: Is there anything you can do to improve your takeaways?
- 1:10:02Speaker 2: Is it.
- 1:10:04Speaker 1: And I know, Ed, we've talked about it, and you've said,
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: you know, sometimes it's just streaky. The ball finds you sometimes,
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: and that's part of it, but... And I think about
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: the 2010-2011 teams that got a ton of takeaways, but
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: were terrible defenses.
- 1:10:14Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:10:15Speaker 1: So I just don't know what the truth is of
- 1:10:17Speaker 1: are you a bad defense if you don't force turnovers
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: or are you just kind of that's just kind of
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: the circumstance this year and you just have to keep
- 1:10:23Speaker 1: playing through it and maybe in important games you will
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: come through with them even though you haven't produced them
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: consistently because they get asked about it so much and
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: it's just there's no like we'll just do this. But
- 1:10:32Speaker 1: there's also part of me that thinks if you're a
- 1:10:34Speaker 1: good defense and you really are aggressive and you're forcing
- 1:10:38Speaker 1: teams into tough throws and tight windows and You're punching
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: the ball. I mean, I know they stress punching the ball,
- 1:10:43Speaker 1: that you're going to get those takeaways. So I just
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: am stuck thinking, does this reflect on this defense that
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: they just don't push the envelope enough and aren't, and
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: I don't want to use the word aggressive, it's just
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: they're not playing, turning the screws on the other team,
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: forcing them into mistakes, or is this just kind of
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: how it goes? In some years, you just don't really
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: get some. And it's not a referendum on how good
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: of a defense you are.
- 1:11:05Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:11:06Speaker 4: I think turnover, as I've said it multiple times, I
- 1:11:08Speaker 4: think being a turnover defense is so overrated. I think
- 1:11:12Speaker 4: it's very situational. It's very luck driven. Like you can
- 1:11:17Speaker 4: force fumbles and not land on the fumbles. And it's
- 1:11:19Speaker 4: not a turnover. If you don't recover it, you can
- 1:11:22Speaker 4: get a tip ball on, you know, that other team,
- 1:11:26Speaker 4: the tip ball goes right to one of their, their
- 1:11:28Speaker 4: defenders and gets picked off. But your tip ball drops
- 1:11:32Speaker 4: on the, in lands on the ground. And I'm not
- 1:11:34Speaker 4: saying that that's all that it is, but there's so
- 1:11:37Speaker 4: many bad bounces or good bounces, depending on which perspective
- 1:11:41Speaker 4: you're taking, that lead to turnovers. I think the one thing, though,
- 1:11:44Speaker 4: that is consistent with most teams that force turnovers is
- 1:11:48Speaker 4: pressure on the quarterback. When you're causing pressure on quarterbacks,
- 1:11:52Speaker 4: you're causing errant decisions, errant throws, things like that that
- 1:11:55Speaker 4: tend to cause turnovers. So if you're not getting pressure
- 1:11:59Speaker 4: on the quarterback consistently, then it's chaos. You need to
- 1:12:04Speaker 4: cause chaos to get turnovers.
- 1:12:06Speaker 9: I don't think necessarily it means you're a good or
- 1:12:09Speaker 9: a bad defense based on that, but I do agree
- 1:12:12Speaker 9: with Evan in that. If you consistently get pressure on
- 1:12:16Speaker 9: the passer, you're probably going to be okay in the
- 1:12:18Speaker 9: turnover margin because of the obvious. Look at how many
- 1:12:23Speaker 9: interceptions come because the guy had to throw it before
- 1:12:25Speaker 9: he wanted to.
- 1:12:28Speaker 1: Or it's late and the receiver can't quite secure it.
- 1:12:31Speaker 2: Guys in this league are so good.
- 1:12:33Speaker 5: Balls do get tipped.
- 1:12:35Speaker 9: The passers and the passing games in general, it's very
- 1:12:38Speaker 9: rare that you just have an errant throw that gets
- 1:12:40Speaker 9: picked off. You know, usually it's because a guy is,
- 1:12:44Speaker 9: you know, is causing the throw. Like, think about Mike
- 1:12:47Speaker 9: Vrabel hitting Kurt Warner in the Super Bowl in tie law,
- 1:12:50Speaker 9: being there to pick it off and run it back.
- 1:12:52Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. Anthony, I saw a lot of scuttlebutt about
- 1:12:56Speaker 5: the play calling from Thursday, but how much of it
- 1:12:58Speaker 5: was Josh calling run plays as opposed to Drake May
- 1:13:02Speaker 5: checking into run plays that look favorable based on the
- 1:13:05Speaker 5: defensive look?
- 1:13:08Speaker 8: Yeah, I mean, that's a tough one to answer.
- 1:13:10Speaker 2: Like.
- 1:13:11Speaker 4: There's all there's all sorts of different variables there. Like
- 1:13:15Speaker 4: sometimes they have to play calls in the huddle. They
- 1:13:18Speaker 4: have a run in the pass or a pass in
- 1:13:19Speaker 4: the pass or run in the run.
- 1:13:20Speaker 2: And he's canning.
- 1:13:21Speaker 4: He's alerting based off the defense like. You know, sometimes
- 1:13:26Speaker 4: you can pick up on some of that stuff on
- 1:13:28Speaker 4: the TV copy and stuff if you hear it or
- 1:13:30Speaker 4: if you see him signaling or something along those lines.
- 1:13:33Speaker 8: But sometimes you can't.
- 1:13:34Speaker 4: So it's kind of a hard question to answer of like,
- 1:13:37Speaker 4: you know, that third and sixth run on the opening
- 1:13:40Speaker 4: drive of the game where they ran it into the
- 1:13:42Speaker 4: pressure front and they didn't get it blocked. Like, was
- 1:13:44Speaker 4: that the play call or was that a checked run?
- 1:13:48Speaker 4: It sounded like it was the play call. that one
- 1:13:52Speaker 4: is always like a tough one to answer.
- 1:13:54Speaker 5: Canadian Mike in stinking Florida. I love you guys. Been
- 1:13:57Speaker 5: watching the show forever, but oh my God, I came
- 1:14:00Speaker 5: out of that game. Not too upset. In fact, I
- 1:14:02Speaker 5: thought if the bears had missed that field goal, I
- 1:14:05Speaker 5: was confident the Patriots are going to score for Thursday
- 1:14:08Speaker 5: night game where the home team typically has the edge.
- 1:14:12Speaker 5: I thought they played a decent game against a good team. However,
- 1:14:14Speaker 5: I tune in today and it's all doom and gloom.
- 1:14:18Speaker 5: Cheer up boys. We have the lowly dolphins coming up.
- 1:14:21Speaker 5: back to our winning ways, hopefully get some more bodies back,
- 1:14:24Speaker 5: and maybe A.J. Brown will get his head out of
- 1:14:27Speaker 5: his you-know-what. So in summary, Patriots are fine. Cheer up,
- 1:14:31Speaker 5: and A.J., wake up. Are we doom and gloom?
- 1:14:34Speaker 2: I don't think we're doom and gloom. No.
- 1:14:35Speaker 9: I give the Patriots a ton of credit for showing
- 1:14:38Speaker 9: that mental toughness that we talked about at the beginning.
- 1:14:40Speaker 2: Of the show.
- 1:14:41Speaker 9: I think they were on the verge of being in
- 1:14:44Speaker 9: real trouble in that game on a few occasions, and
- 1:14:47Speaker 9: to their credit, they made Chicago play 60 solid minutes.
- 1:14:51Speaker 2: And, and I think Chicago.
- 1:14:53Speaker 9: Was better in that Thursday night game, but the Patriots
- 1:14:57Speaker 9: stuck around that, you know, they get the kind of
- 1:14:59Speaker 9: the gift at the end of the half.
- 1:15:00Speaker 2: And then, you know, again, they fall.
- 1:15:02Speaker 9: Back behind by 13 and Drake may goes right down
- 1:15:04Speaker 9: the field and they get the rare and touchdown to
- 1:15:07Speaker 9: get back within six. They never let Chicago get comfortable
- 1:15:10Speaker 9: right down to the end where they're forced to make
- 1:15:13Speaker 9: a long 58 yard field goal to put the game away.
- 1:15:16Speaker 2: But, I can say all those things positively about the
- 1:15:20Speaker 2: mental fortitude that the Patriots showed.
- 1:15:22Speaker 9: And I can also say, I don't know, like they
- 1:15:26Speaker 9: basically scored 14 points in the game. I mean, they
- 1:15:28Speaker 9: were gifted seven at the end of the half and
- 1:15:30Speaker 9: they were given three at the end of the, in
- 1:15:31Speaker 9: the last minute when Chicago was up nine, like you
- 1:15:35Speaker 9: need more production than that.
- 1:15:37Speaker 1: It's just, I feel great about Drake May. I mean,
- 1:15:38Speaker 1: I think it's exciting to watch him every week. And
- 1:15:41Speaker 1: that to me is, is the first biggest piece of it.
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: But at the same time, they're four and three. And
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: now it's like, What kind of team are you going
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: to be? Are you going to be a team that's
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: going to streak to the playoffs in November and really
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: start putting it together? What's interesting to me is identifying
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: what can be fixed and trying to fix it, not
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: sitting here going, isn't this great?
- 1:15:59Speaker 2: We got Drake May.
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: That is great that you got Drake May, but you're
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: going to need a lot more if you want to
- 1:16:03Speaker 1: have a fun playoff.
- 1:16:04Speaker 5: That game in Munich should be interesting.
- 1:16:06Speaker 2: It's the Lions.
- 1:16:07Speaker 9: You know what I blame this on? I blame this
- 1:16:10Speaker 9: on the sudden groundswell after the Raiders game heading to
- 1:16:16Speaker 9: the Jets where The schedule wasn't tough anymore. The schedule
- 1:16:20Speaker 9: suddenly became easy.
- 1:16:21Speaker 2: Are we back? Because we just penciled in wins against
- 1:16:24Speaker 2: teams like Chicago because everybody in the league stinks except
- 1:16:27Speaker 2: for the Patriots. And this is what happens. Chicago's not
- 1:16:32Speaker 2: the best team in the NFC. They're not the best
- 1:16:34Speaker 2: team in.
- 1:16:34Speaker 9: The league, but they're pretty good. They won 11 or
- 1:16:36Speaker 9: 12 games. I think they won 12 games last year
- 1:16:38Speaker 9: with the playoffs. They lose in overtime in the divisional round.
- 1:16:42Speaker 2: That's a good team.
- 1:16:43Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:16:45Speaker 9: Like, I don't know why everybody just thought that was
- 1:16:48Speaker 9: a nothing game, that they had no chance to lose.
- 1:16:50Speaker 2: But a lot of people felt that way.
- 1:16:53Speaker 9: They convinced themselves that all those NFC North games are
- 1:16:55Speaker 9: not going to be difficult.
- 1:16:56Speaker 2: I think they're all going to be tough.
- 1:16:58Speaker 5: They certainly are.
- 1:16:59Speaker 8: I don't do moral victories.
- 1:17:02Speaker 2: I don't either.
- 1:17:03Speaker 8: Sorry.
- 1:17:04Speaker 5: Question. What are your thoughts on getting Henderson involved in
- 1:17:07Speaker 5: kick return? Seems like a great opportunity to get him
- 1:17:09Speaker 5: the ball in space, weaponize his speed, give him some
- 1:17:12Speaker 5: of those hits. that get him into the game a
- 1:17:15Speaker 5: la Kiner against the Jets. I don't mean this in
- 1:17:18Speaker 5: a mean way, but it's not as if he's some
- 1:17:20Speaker 5: prized possession who can't play on special teams.
- 1:17:23Speaker 2: I don't hate it.
- 1:17:23Speaker 5: Am I the only one who remembers that his first
- 1:17:25Speaker 5: touch in the NFL was kick return touchdown in the
- 1:17:28Speaker 5: first preseason game? I've been pounding the table for this.
- 1:17:33Speaker 5: For him going back to last season. Would love to
- 1:17:35Speaker 5: hear Vrabel's response to this question, and I'm somewhat surprised
- 1:17:39Speaker 5: that no one else has asked. I don't think Kyle
- 1:17:41Speaker 5: Williams is an answer back there. Give me kinder and
- 1:17:44Speaker 5: Henderson on kick return for a chance.
- 1:17:46Speaker 2: At X plays.
- 1:17:48Speaker 4: So he has been asked about it and we have
- 1:17:50Speaker 4: talked about it. And notoriously, the answer is that he's
- 1:17:55Speaker 4: a very important player for us on offense and we
- 1:17:58Speaker 4: don't want to risk injury for him on defense now or.
- 1:18:00Speaker 8: On special teams.
- 1:18:01Speaker 4: Now to the emailers point, he's not really doing much
- 1:18:05Speaker 4: on offense. So at this point, is he really this
- 1:18:07Speaker 4: like super valuable offensive player anymore?
- 1:18:10Speaker 2: I can hear the argument more now.
- 1:18:13Speaker 4: I would not put him in kinder both back there
- 1:18:15Speaker 4: because those are your two backup running backs that you're
- 1:18:19Speaker 4: both putting.
- 1:18:19Speaker 2: At risk like that. You have to think about the
- 1:18:22Speaker 2: injury risk.
- 1:18:22Speaker 4: Antonio Gibson blew out his knee, returning a kick last
- 1:18:26Speaker 4: year and missed the rest of the season with a
- 1:18:28Speaker 4: torn ACL. Like the players get hurt on the kickoff
- 1:18:31Speaker 4: returns and, So I think that that's where they're trying
- 1:18:33Speaker 4: to manage that situation. But like the emailer said, now
- 1:18:37Speaker 4: that Henderson is not giving you, you know, a ton
- 1:18:40Speaker 4: of spark on offense, it's I'm more open to it
- 1:18:44Speaker 4: than I have been in the past.
- 1:18:45Speaker 1: I would just say the injury, too. We don't know
- 1:18:47Speaker 1: how much of that is playing into this, If it
- 1:18:49Speaker 1: was all performance-based and he's not playing because of performance,
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: then I think it's a great idea. If he's kind
- 1:18:54Speaker 1: of banged up, we're trying to limit him a little bit,
- 1:18:56Speaker 1: then I would say let's wait before throwing him on,
- 1:18:59Speaker 1: which certainly with him on a kickoff return is going
- 1:19:01Speaker 1: to be a car crash.
- 1:19:02Speaker 5: I'd like to see it.
- 1:19:04Speaker 2: I'm not opposed to it.
- 1:19:05Speaker 5: But if people think his problem is vision, then... How's
- 1:19:08Speaker 5: that going to work out?
- 1:19:08Speaker 2: I mean, he wasn't great at it last year. I mean,
- 1:19:11Speaker 2: I know he took one back in the preseason. The
- 1:19:13Speaker 2: first time he touched it. Against Sonny's Cowash All-Stars. Never
- 1:19:15Speaker 2: done it before.
- 1:19:15Speaker 8: He did it in the Super Bowl, too, though.
- 1:19:17Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:19:17Speaker 8: He had a good one in the Super Bowl. Out
- 1:19:20Speaker 8: to the 40-something yard line.
- 1:19:22Speaker 5: What? No. He didn't?
- 1:19:24Speaker 2: No, I don't think that.
- 1:19:26Speaker 9: I don't think he looked great returning kicks last year
- 1:19:29Speaker 9: when he did it.
- 1:19:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:19:30Speaker 9: I mean, I'm not saying he didn't have any. Like,
- 1:19:32Speaker 9: Corey Kiner's had a couple of good ones, either. I
- 1:19:34Speaker 9: think the kickoff return game, in general, has been bad.
- 1:19:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:19:37Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:19:38Speaker 9: I think that's another part, to Evan's point about it's
- 1:19:41Speaker 9: all on Drake May's shoulders. I don't know where they
- 1:19:44Speaker 9: rank because I don't look at the minutiae, but I'll
- 1:19:47Speaker 9: bet you they're in the bottom five in average drive
- 1:19:49Speaker 9: start because they don't create any turnovers to get short fields.
- 1:19:55Speaker 9: And their kick return game, with the exception of that
- 1:19:57Speaker 9: Jets game, has traditionally been inside the 30.
- 1:20:01Speaker 2: They haven't gotten much out of the kick return game.
- 1:20:05Speaker 5: No one's kicking it into the end zone because they're
- 1:20:06Speaker 5: not afraid of Usually our returns are short.
- 1:20:10Speaker 2: Of the 30.
- 1:20:10Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:20:11Speaker 4: Oh yeah. I, uh, the, the, the kickoff return in
- 1:20:14Speaker 4: general is a pet is, is like something that grinds
- 1:20:17Speaker 4: my gears, not just with the Patriots.
- 1:20:18Speaker 2: You don't like it. Uh, I don't like it either.
- 1:20:20Speaker 4: I don't, I think the lack of creativity and the
- 1:20:22Speaker 4: kick returns is like kind of sad.
- 1:20:25Speaker 2: That's all.
- 1:20:26Speaker 4: Like, I think that the way that the rule is designed,
- 1:20:29Speaker 4: the two returners back there, the line of scrimmage that
- 1:20:32Speaker 4: you're basically setting by having the, the two different teams
- 1:20:35Speaker 4: so close to one another, uh, they just kind of block.
- 1:20:39Speaker 4: They just kind of block the guy in front of them,
- 1:20:41Speaker 4: and there's no creativity.
- 1:20:43Speaker 2: There's nothing.
- 1:20:44Speaker 5: What I would do is I would move the line
- 1:20:46Speaker 5: of scrimmage up. So I would make the landing zone narrower.
- 1:20:50Speaker 5: I would move the line of scrimmage up closer to
- 1:20:52Speaker 5: where the returners are, and the kicker has to get
- 1:20:55Speaker 5: it over that line so that there's more of an
- 1:20:58Speaker 5: immediate impact for the runner, but... There's not as much
- 1:21:06Speaker 5: field that you have to gain in order to break one.
- 1:21:09Speaker 2: So what's the line that they line up on now?
- 1:21:10Speaker 5: Everything's closer. I think they're at the 30.
- 1:21:13Speaker 2: Yeah, 30, 35. I would move it to the 20.
- 1:21:14Speaker 2: Because the landing zone's the 20. So the landing zone
- 1:21:16Speaker 2: is the 20. Yeah. You know that. They have to
- 1:21:18Speaker 2: get it to the 20.
- 1:21:19Speaker 5: I would move the line of scrimmage to the 20.
- 1:21:21Speaker 5: You know? So just make that.
- 1:21:26Speaker 2: I would just, you know, go back to the way
- 1:21:27Speaker 2: they used to have kickoffs. Yeah. And just do it
- 1:21:30Speaker 2: that way.
- 1:21:30Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: I like that.
- 1:21:32Speaker 4: This thing, to me, is just a gimmick. My issue
- 1:21:36Speaker 4: isn't about the rules and the setup. My issue is
- 1:21:39Speaker 4: that I think teams are just so afraid of having
- 1:21:43Speaker 4: something catastrophic happen on a kickoff return, like they try
- 1:21:47Speaker 4: to do something cool and it ends up in a
- 1:21:49Speaker 4: turnover or something like that, that they just don't do
- 1:21:52Speaker 4: anything cool. So now the idea is just let's just
- 1:21:55Speaker 4: get the 30-yard line, and that's it. And it's like
- 1:21:58Speaker 4: that's just the line is.
- 1:22:01Speaker 4: You know, if we got the 30 yard line, that's
- 1:22:04Speaker 4: considered a good kickoff return.
- 1:22:06Speaker 2: And it's like, well, now. So now you're just kind
- 1:22:09Speaker 2: of it's just boring. Yeah, it's just it's just boring.
- 1:22:12Speaker 2: And there's no blocking schemes.
- 1:22:14Speaker 5: Nothing that the runners, the returners are coached to not be.
- 1:22:19Speaker 5: creative in their return. I rarely see a guy change direction.
- 1:22:23Speaker 5: It's almost like, just hit it.
- 1:22:26Speaker 4: Kickoff return in general is north-south. You don't want to
- 1:22:29Speaker 4: be dancing on a kickoff.
- 1:22:30Speaker 5: Return in general. You've got all that room, and you've
- 1:22:34Speaker 5: got the whole field. I don't know. It just seems
- 1:22:37Speaker 5: like the rare times that I do see guys try
- 1:22:41Speaker 5: to take it wide, they get a little bit more
- 1:22:43Speaker 5: than they would have if they just hit it up
- 1:22:45Speaker 5: the middle.
- 1:22:45Speaker 4: Yeah. I, that's all directional, like based off of where
- 1:22:48Speaker 4: the ball. Well, where the pocket is.
- 1:22:50Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:22:51Speaker 8: Uh, but like, I, I just feel like it's so vanilla.
- 1:22:55Speaker 4: Like I, I, I, you know, when I do watch
- 1:22:57Speaker 4: some of the, when I give up big ones or
- 1:22:59Speaker 4: have big ones, I do watch the, the all 22
- 1:23:02Speaker 4: of the kickoff returns. And like, it's all the same thing.
- 1:23:05Speaker 4: It's just man on man blocking, right? Kick returner right
- 1:23:08Speaker 4: up the gut. And sometimes you may, you crease it
- 1:23:11Speaker 4: and sometimes you don't. And it just seems to me
- 1:23:14Speaker 4: like there's missed opportunity there of like getting creative, not
- 1:23:17Speaker 4: just with the returners, but also the blocking schemes of
- 1:23:20Speaker 4: like ways to do different blocking techniques.
- 1:23:23Speaker 2: And things like that. And they just don't do it.
- 1:23:25Speaker 5: I remember when the first, when the rule first got implemented,
- 1:23:29Speaker 5: you know, it hadn't started yet. We were at, um,
- 1:23:32Speaker 5: I don't, I, it was some event and I was
- 1:23:34Speaker 5: sitting at a table with Ernie Adams. And I said,
- 1:23:37Speaker 5: you know, this new rule, I think it gives an
- 1:23:39Speaker 5: opportunity to do some creative things. And he immediately looked
- 1:23:43Speaker 5: up and like, you could see the light go off.
- 1:23:45Speaker 5: And then like, he didn't, he said, yeah, yeah.
- 1:23:49Speaker 2: He remembered he wasn't supposed to talk.
- 1:23:50Speaker 13: Right.
- 1:23:50Speaker 5: He wouldn't tell me like what he was thinking, but
- 1:23:52Speaker 5: a guy like that, I would think maybe he cooked
- 1:23:55Speaker 5: something up, you.
- 1:23:56Speaker 1: Know, has there been any, uh, I just want to
- 1:23:58Speaker 1: know what the information is since they changed the kickoff
- 1:24:00Speaker 1: to what the average field starting field position is like,
- 1:24:03Speaker 1: how has it dramatically affected?
- 1:24:05Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:24:05Speaker 1: You know, it's definitely better, a lot more advantageous towards
- 1:24:09Speaker 1: the 30, obviously, because.
- 1:24:11Speaker 8: It's short in the field significantly.
- 1:24:13Speaker 4: And like, I think that that, you know, there's like
- 1:24:15Speaker 4: a lot of people that are like, what happened to
- 1:24:17Speaker 4: like the 300 yard passing games and like all the
- 1:24:19Speaker 4: yards and stuff like that, that, each possession is on
- 1:24:23Speaker 4: a shorter and shorter field. So like there's less yards
- 1:24:26Speaker 4: to make, you know, like, so it's never thought of that,
- 1:24:30Speaker 4: that that's, I think a big part of it as
- 1:24:32Speaker 4: well as like, Now, like, they're returning it out to
- 1:24:35Speaker 4: the 30, the touchbacks to the 35. So, like, you
- 1:24:37Speaker 4: get a couple first downs, you're in field goal range.
- 1:24:39Speaker 4: Especially with some of these kickers. And the kickers drill
- 1:24:42Speaker 4: in 60-yarders and stuff like that. Like, it's no longer, like,
- 1:24:46Speaker 4: you need to put a drive together to get into
- 1:24:48Speaker 4: field goal range.
- 1:24:49Speaker 2: Like, you can get a couple first downs and be
- 1:24:51Speaker 2: in field goal range.
- 1:24:51Speaker 5: Russell in Florida, tough to lose, but understandable given the
- 1:24:54Speaker 5: injuries both sides of the ball in the short week.
- 1:24:56Speaker 5: That being said, Marcus Jones struggled in this game. and
- 1:25:00Speaker 5: it seems to be an ongoing issue outside of the
- 1:25:02Speaker 5: Bowers game. Do you think Elliott and Vrabel will look
- 1:25:05Speaker 5: to add depth to both sides of the ball?
- 1:25:07Speaker 2: Outside of the Bowers game?
- 1:25:09Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:25:09Speaker 2: Did he say?
- 1:25:10Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:25:11Speaker 5: Right. Well, I think maybe he's giving them a pass there.
- 1:25:13Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 1:25:14Speaker 7: Maybe.
- 1:25:14Speaker 4: But we're not going to give them a pass for
- 1:25:16Speaker 4: them having Colson Loveland on them in the red zone.
- 1:25:20Speaker 2: He is struggling a little bit.
- 1:25:21Speaker 5: Yeah, he is. If I were in the front office,
- 1:25:24Speaker 5: I'd be inquiring about Tariq Woolen from the Eagles. Jones
- 1:25:27Speaker 5: is in a funk and Davis has had trouble staying healthy,
- 1:25:30Speaker 5: especially considering his age. I also think if you're in
- 1:25:34Speaker 5: the mood to spend, maybe see what Quentin Nelson would
- 1:25:36Speaker 5: get from what we could, you know, how to get
- 1:25:39Speaker 5: him out of Indy. Yeah.
- 1:25:40Speaker 8: Requel on different positions.
- 1:25:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: Like to me, and we talked about this on the
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: post game show, I, and I get it. Like we just,
- 1:25:46Speaker 1: we've talked plenty about Marcus Jones, like great player. He's
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: always going to be five foot eight. There's going to
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: be times where teams get him on a tall receiver
- 1:25:53Speaker 1: and they're going to chuck it up.
- 1:25:54Speaker 2: I would see it more.
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: And I wouldn't say this is a trade thing, depth
- 1:25:58Speaker 1: at the safety position and not having to use him
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: as much on tight ends and having a little bit
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: more freedom to use him on defense rather than he's
- 1:26:05Speaker 1: your top nickel guy. This is our top package. If
- 1:26:07Speaker 1: you had a third safety that you liked similar in
- 1:26:10Speaker 1: a style to Marcus Jones that now you have a
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: little bit more package flexibility. I mean, like, you know,
- 1:26:14Speaker 1: Nick M and worry would be the prototype right now,
- 1:26:17Speaker 1: but You have those kind of guys. Now you can play, oh,
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: they got a small slot this week. We got Marcus
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: on him. They got a big tight end who really
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: moves like Brock Bowers. Now we got a tight end
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: we feel really good about at the line of scrimmage.
- 1:26:27Speaker 1: I think instead of trying to replace him at the corner,
- 1:26:30Speaker 1: I would say the answer to me is at the
- 1:26:31Speaker 1: safety position.
- 1:26:32Speaker 4: I'm not trying to absolve Marcus Jones or anything, but
- 1:26:34Speaker 4: I think Deuce nailed it. Like, this is a personnel
- 1:26:37Speaker 4: matching issue, not a Marcus Jones.
- 1:26:39Speaker 8: Like, Marcus Jones can't grow.
- 1:26:41Speaker 4: Like, he can't make himself bigger and go from 5'8
- 1:26:45Speaker 4: to 6'2.
- 1:26:45Speaker 8: It can't happen.
- 1:26:47Speaker 2: Trust me, if it could, I would try it. But
- 1:26:50Speaker 2: it can't happen.
- 1:26:50Speaker 4: So, like, this is just, I put the impetus on
- 1:26:53Speaker 4: the coaches. Like, you have to keep him out of
- 1:26:55Speaker 4: those matchups.
- 1:26:56Speaker 6: Mm-hmm.
- 1:26:57Speaker 4: And if you can't keep them out of those matchups
- 1:26:58Speaker 4: and I put the impetus on the front office to
- 1:27:00Speaker 4: find guys that can get them out of those matchups.
- 1:27:03Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:27:03Speaker 4: And Jalen Reed supposed to be that guy. It hasn't
- 1:27:05Speaker 4: really stuck. He gave up one play in five snaps.
- 1:27:08Speaker 4: He gave up a 22 yard catch to Loveland up
- 1:27:11Speaker 4: the seam. But like, they that's, that's the issue. It's
- 1:27:14Speaker 4: a personnel matching issue. It's, it's not necessarily like, is
- 1:27:17Speaker 4: it Marcus Jones's fault that they flex out Colson Loveland
- 1:27:21Speaker 4: in the red zone and he gets matched up on
- 1:27:23Speaker 4: a guy that it's got like a foot on him
- 1:27:25Speaker 4: in the red zone and he gets big boy for
- 1:27:27Speaker 4: a touchdown.
- 1:27:28Speaker 2: And he couldn't wait to attack. Right.
- 1:27:29Speaker 9: Like, but that, I agree with everything you guys are saying.
- 1:27:32Speaker 9: And that's, you know, Carlton Davis's absence. He's missed what
- 1:27:35Speaker 9: three of the last four games, something like that for
- 1:27:37Speaker 9: the last six or the last six. Now it's, it's
- 1:27:40Speaker 9: glaring because it, it's putting two smaller corners on the
- 1:27:44Speaker 9: field because Charles Woods is playing, you know, more than
- 1:27:48Speaker 9: he would.
- 1:27:49Speaker 2: And you kind of can't take Marcus Jones out now.
- 1:27:52Speaker 9: Like, and I agree with everything that the guy said
- 1:27:54Speaker 9: about the three-corner nickel look, right?
- 1:27:57Speaker 2: He's 5'8.
- 1:27:58Speaker 9: He's going to get matched up in tough matchups in
- 1:28:01Speaker 9: that if you don't have any options to fall back on.
- 1:28:04Speaker 2: So they need Carlton Davis back. At least that'll give
- 1:28:07Speaker 2: him some flexibility.
- 1:28:09Speaker 9: You know, maybe Del Pettis comes back and you start
- 1:28:11Speaker 9: using him a little more because, the Jalen Reed thing
- 1:28:14Speaker 9: kind of isn't really there.
- 1:28:15Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:28:16Speaker 4: This is why those players like Eamon worries, obviously the,
- 1:28:19Speaker 4: the prototype, you know, Kyle Hamilton, Derwin James, like these
- 1:28:23Speaker 4: guys are going higher and higher in the draft because
- 1:28:25Speaker 4: they're the 12 personnel kryptonite, like having a safety that
- 1:28:29Speaker 4: can cover tight ends that can hold up against the
- 1:28:31Speaker 4: run in the box. And at the point of attack
- 1:28:34Speaker 4: on the strong side, like those guys are now extremely
- 1:28:38Speaker 4: valuable players.
- 1:28:39Speaker 9: That to me watching watching that one of the first
- 1:28:44Speaker 9: you know i didn't watch a ton of it because
- 1:28:45Speaker 9: it was that game declared very quickly the other night
- 1:28:48Speaker 9: seattle kansas city i knew where that was going um
- 1:28:51Speaker 9: you could notice how much even worry means to the
- 1:28:54Speaker 9: like that was a different everywhere i mean Kansas City
- 1:28:57Speaker 9: scored three, the Patriots scored ten, like, whatever. But, like,
- 1:29:00Speaker 9: the difference to me was how Seattle looked. I thought
- 1:29:03Speaker 9: the Patriots had a much better feel for moving the
- 1:29:07Speaker 9: ball when they played Seattle than Kansas City did the
- 1:29:10Speaker 9: other night.
- 1:29:10Speaker 2: They couldn't move it at all.
- 1:29:11Speaker 8: They didn't even go.
- 1:29:12Speaker 2: To the red zone.
- 1:29:13Speaker 5: No.
- 1:29:13Speaker 8: First time in Mahomes' career to not have a red zone.
- 1:29:15Speaker 6: No.
- 1:29:16Speaker 5: Travis in West Virginia. This came up in the postgame show.
- 1:29:19Speaker 5: I'm very disappointed in Deuce for not knowing that Eldred
- 1:29:23Speaker 5: doesn't do long-haul trucking. Yeah. I thought he doesn't do
- 1:29:27Speaker 5: long haul. I thought it was more.
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: Yeah, that's what he said.
- 1:29:30Speaker 5: He's local. So, Travis, you need to listen.
- 1:29:33Speaker 2: No, that's what he said. That's what you just read.
- 1:29:35Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:29:35Speaker 2: He said he, I didn't realize.
- 1:29:37Speaker 1: He's disappointed that Deuce didn't.
- 1:29:37Speaker 2: Know that he doesn't do long haul.
- 1:29:39Speaker 5: I didn't know that he doesn't do.
- 1:29:40Speaker 2: That's what you said.
- 1:29:41Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 1:29:42Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:29:42Speaker 5: Yeah, he doesn't do long haul trucks.
- 1:29:44Speaker 2: No, that's what I was informed of.
- 1:29:46Speaker 5: I knew that.
- 1:29:46Speaker 2: Does he or doesn't? I don't know.
- 1:29:48Speaker 1: It's only local.
- 1:29:49Speaker 2: Clogs or clogs?
- 1:29:50Speaker 5: But they still give them the.
- 1:29:52Speaker 1: Like, you're still allowed to do that with the local trucking.
- 1:29:54Speaker 5: Well, all trucks have that horn.
- 1:29:55Speaker 1: Oh. Okay.
- 1:29:57Speaker 5: You know, they don't take it out because you're not
- 1:29:59Speaker 5: going long haul.
- 1:30:00Speaker 2: There's a little bit of douche privilege hanging through here.
- 1:30:04Speaker 2: I'm just interested in.
- 1:30:04Speaker 5: And I know that.
- 1:30:05Speaker 2: Right.
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: I just like the arm wrestling with the trucking world.
- 1:30:08Speaker 2: That's what interests me. Over the top.
- 1:30:10Speaker 5: Okay.
- 1:30:11Speaker 4: I have some trucking stories off the air.
- 1:30:15Speaker 9: Oh.
- 1:30:17Speaker 2: This guy. Rest stops?
- 1:30:19Speaker 5: No.
- 1:30:21Speaker 8: Friend of mine's dad.
- 1:30:24Speaker 2: On a long haul?
- 1:30:24Speaker 1: D-E-A.
- 1:30:28Speaker 5: Let's see. Rusty and Arlen.
- 1:30:30Speaker 2: Rusty and Arlen.
- 1:30:32Speaker 5: There's been a lot of discussion about the line, and
- 1:30:35Speaker 5: I feel like Wilson has been under the radar. Do
- 1:30:38Speaker 5: you feel like he's been a hit at center? His
- 1:30:41Speaker 5: whole thing in the draft was he was kind of
- 1:30:43Speaker 5: raw but had upside, right? Both in terms of run
- 1:30:46Speaker 5: and pass blocking.
- 1:30:48Speaker 2: I think Wilson's been okay. I think he's been okay.
- 1:30:50Speaker 5: I heard his name. Yeah, I was... I thought he was.
- 1:30:52Speaker 2: We did earlier.
- 1:30:52Speaker 1: I was kind of hard on him early. I mean,
- 1:30:54Speaker 1: and I, you know, I was waiting to pass judgment
- 1:30:56Speaker 1: on him. But I think he's been solid. It's just
- 1:30:59Speaker 1: hard because you're not seeing the production, you know? And
- 1:31:01Speaker 1: it's like, you look at, like, the pass block win
- 1:31:04Speaker 1: rates and the run block win rates, and he's up
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: there on some of those rankings. But, like, it just
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: doesn't translate.
- 1:31:08Speaker 2: You don't have a good run game.
- 1:31:09Speaker 1: So I'm like, that's great, but... What's going on?
- 1:31:12Speaker 5: What does it mean?
- 1:31:12Speaker 2: At the guard spots. I don't know how, like, to
- 1:31:14Speaker 2: evaluate him properly.
- 1:31:16Speaker 5: Because, like.
- 1:31:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 1:31:18Speaker 4: I mean, the guards have been such a revolving door that, like,
- 1:31:24Speaker 4: it's hard to sit here and say, like, that anything
- 1:31:27Speaker 4: on the interior is really working. I think the one-on-one
- 1:31:30Speaker 4: pass blocking has been pretty solid. You know, centers don't
- 1:31:33Speaker 4: get a ton of action on one-on-one pass blocking, but
- 1:31:36Speaker 4: he's been okay. And, you know, we'll see about some
- 1:31:40Speaker 4: of the other things when the whole rest of the league.
- 1:31:42Speaker 4: one good dominant run-blocking center is not going to make
- 1:31:45Speaker 4: you a good running game. So to have the results
- 1:31:48Speaker 4: really bear out, you need more than just that.
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: We did see Elijah Veritaker in the locker room. I mean,
- 1:31:54Speaker 1: he wasn't practicing or anything, but anytime you see those
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: guys around, I think it's semi-positive. Vrabel kind of playing coy, though.
- 1:32:00Speaker 8: He said it wasn't season-ending.
- 1:32:01Speaker 1: Didn't seem like it was season-ending, wasn't making any prediction,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: but love to get all these guys back after the bye.
- 1:32:07Speaker 5: Darius in Louisville. Uh-oh. Yeah, he's coming after you, Paul.
- 1:32:12Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 1:32:13Speaker 5: Not really worried about AJ or the loss to the Bears.
- 1:32:15Speaker 5: We'll be fine. We have a Drake that's an Avengers reference. Yeah.
- 1:32:19Speaker 5: I don't know if... Hulk. Matt got that.
- 1:32:21Speaker 2: We've got a Hulk.
- 1:32:21Speaker 5: One thing I'm noticing after years and years of watching
- 1:32:24Speaker 5: you guys is how hypocritical Paulie is. He hates when
- 1:32:28Speaker 5: other people say, if this and if that, but he
- 1:32:31Speaker 5: sure does love saying it. It could have been 31-7
- 1:32:34Speaker 5: if this happened, blah, blah, blah, but it wasn't, Paulie.
- 1:32:37Speaker 5: We still had a chance. If you like using hypotheticals,
- 1:32:40Speaker 5: then let everyone else use them without being an a-hole
- 1:32:42Speaker 5: about it.
- 1:32:43Speaker 2: That's true, and that's exactly what I said.
- 1:32:46Speaker 9: Despite all the things that happened in the game, the Patriots'
- 1:32:49Speaker 9: mental toughness gave them a chance and forced Chicago to
- 1:32:52Speaker 9: play a 60-minute game.
- 1:32:53Speaker 2: That's exactly what I said.
- 1:32:55Speaker 5: You did say that.
- 1:32:55Speaker 2: Despite all of those.
- 1:32:56Speaker 9: Things that went wrong and all the missed tackles and
- 1:32:59Speaker 9: all the struggles and the pick in the end zone
- 1:33:02Speaker 9: and all those, they didn't allow themselves to get blown out.
- 1:33:07Speaker 2: Flipped it on him.
- 1:33:08Speaker 6: I agree.
- 1:33:08Speaker 2: Flipped it on him. It's a positive. I didn't flip it.
- 1:33:11Speaker 2: That's what I said originally.
- 1:33:13Speaker 5: Dalton writes in from Illinois. I think Eli Raritan is
- 1:33:17Speaker 5: solidifying himself as the future tight end for the Patriots.
- 1:33:20Speaker 5: I enjoy seeing them run the two tight end formations
- 1:33:24Speaker 5: with him and Henry. Raritan is everything I thought Jacob
- 1:33:27Speaker 5: Hollister was going to become. Jacob Hollister?
- 1:33:29Speaker 2: I liked Cody Hollister better.
- 1:33:30Speaker 5: I think he might be kidding. I don't know. Thoughts
- 1:33:32Speaker 5: on his future?
- 1:33:34Speaker 1: Encouraging i mean it's bright you know i think he's
- 1:33:37Speaker 1: i just i just like when rookies are able to
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: play and contribute and look it hasn't been like overwhelming
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: production um but it's been really solid and i think
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: it's the same way i feel about uh akis you
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: know it's like really solid playing well getting a lot
- 1:33:51Speaker 1: of experience here as a rookie and i think these
- 1:33:53Speaker 1: guys are going to be part of the of the
- 1:33:55Speaker 1: equation i i keep adding though at the tight end
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: position i keep adding um But it's nice to see
- 1:34:00Speaker 1: Hunter Henry coming back, too. I think that's helped Eli Raritan.
- 1:34:02Speaker 9: What I don't know about Raritan is, does he project
- 1:34:05Speaker 9: as the top guy?
- 1:34:06Speaker 2: Yeah, to do it all. Now, not that Hunter Henry's
- 1:34:11Speaker 2: not known as a blocker. He's not the most physical guy.
- 1:34:13Speaker 9: But can he be a full-time number one tight end
- 1:34:16Speaker 9: down the road?
- 1:34:18Speaker 2: I agree with everything Mike said about his start. We
- 1:34:21Speaker 2: all thought he would be a contributor, and he is. Yeah.
- 1:34:24Speaker 5: You know.
- 1:34:25Speaker 4: notoriously slow developing position. I have bought this up several times.
- 1:34:30Speaker 4: And so he's on pace right now for four 75
- 1:34:33Speaker 4: and six touchdowns, which is like pretty good for a
- 1:34:36Speaker 4: rookie tight end. We'll see if he hits the, you know,
- 1:34:39Speaker 4: stays healthy and hits that. As a pass catcher, I've
- 1:34:42Speaker 4: been really encouraged. The run blocking, we'll see. The pass catching, though,
- 1:34:46Speaker 4: he's a mismatch. When they can get him on a
- 1:34:48Speaker 4: linebacker up the seam or across the field or whatever
- 1:34:52Speaker 4: the case may be, he's a mismatch. And you saw
- 1:34:55Speaker 4: it on Thursday night with the seam runs. You know,
- 1:34:57Speaker 4: I thought he was open both times.
- 1:34:58Speaker 8: I thought he could have had.
- 1:34:59Speaker 4: Touchdowns on both those plays with better ball on the
- 1:35:01Speaker 4: first one. So, that's encouraging. Every single week he gets
- 1:35:05Speaker 4: matched up on a vertical against the linebacker and he
- 1:35:07Speaker 4: wins the round almost every week.
- 1:35:09Speaker 1: It's another small sample example for me that Drake, Drake
- 1:35:13Speaker 1: likes to run with the tall dudes, you know, like
- 1:35:15Speaker 1: he likes those guys. He's, he's, he's finding those guys.
- 1:35:18Speaker 5: He's tall.
- 1:35:18Speaker 8: He's got good speed.
- 1:35:20Speaker 2: He's a good athlete.
- 1:35:21Speaker 4: He just, the run blocking is, I think a lot
- 1:35:25Speaker 4: of the things that we talk about with the run
- 1:35:27Speaker 4: game is, a lot of people focus on the backs
- 1:35:29Speaker 4: of the offensive line and the scheme, but the tight
- 1:35:32Speaker 4: ends blocking is just as important as a lot of
- 1:35:35Speaker 4: those things.
- 1:35:35Speaker 8: And they can't block the edges.
- 1:35:37Speaker 4: They can't block the edges with the tight ends. They're
- 1:35:39Speaker 4: asking poor Efton Chisholm to like get into a car
- 1:35:42Speaker 4: crash on every single time he goes in there. to
- 1:35:44Speaker 4: dig somebody out so uh that that's a big problem.
- 1:35:47Speaker 1: He's a willing blocker he sure is he is a.
- 1:35:49Speaker 4: Willing blocker and i feel bad for him because they're
- 1:35:51Speaker 4: literally like block this nickel who's inside of you in
- 1:35:55Speaker 4: the hole and you have to come up and you
- 1:35:58Speaker 4: have to insert and block him and it's literally like
- 1:36:00Speaker 4: their ass freaking car crash every single time so.
- 1:36:03Speaker 5: Good for him don and philly i'm okay with drake
- 1:36:06Speaker 5: may interception in the game played excellent other than that
- 1:36:09Speaker 5: there's another one that Killing Drake May.
- 1:36:12Speaker 9: I just don't think people... Nobody has. I actually think
- 1:36:15Speaker 9: they've been a little light on him. Based on the
- 1:36:17Speaker 9: first and fourth quarters.
- 1:36:18Speaker 5: I don't want a quarterback who is scared to make
- 1:36:20Speaker 5: a play, live and die by the gunslinger. Feels like
- 1:36:23Speaker 5: we have our own version of Josh Allen. That wasn't gunslinging.
- 1:36:26Speaker 2: We'll cross Quentin Nelson off the list.
- 1:36:29Speaker 6: Oh.
- 1:36:30Speaker 2: The rich get richer.
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: Adam Schefter reporting, Quentin Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks.
- 1:36:35Speaker 2: Colts are open for business.
- 1:36:37Speaker 5: Oh, that's... Wow.
- 1:36:39Speaker 2: I never thought it would make any sense.
- 1:36:40Speaker 9: I didn't think that the Patriots could make that move.
- 1:36:43Speaker 9: I'll be curious to see what the compensation is, but
- 1:36:46Speaker 9: I've got to think it's at least a day two pick.
- 1:36:48Speaker 9: Like a second or third round pick because he's in
- 1:36:51Speaker 9: the expiring contract and that's what he's going to get.
- 1:36:54Speaker 2: He's going to sign somewhere as a free agent, right?
- 1:36:56Speaker 2: He's going to be worth a third round comp pick, right?
- 1:36:58Speaker 8: Probably.
- 1:36:59Speaker 2: There you go.
- 1:37:01Speaker 9: My guess is it's going to be a second or
- 1:37:02Speaker 9: third round pick. Could the Patriots afford to trade a
- 1:37:05Speaker 9: first round pick for A.J.
- 1:37:06Speaker 2: Brown? And I know it's in the future. And then
- 1:37:08Speaker 2: maybe a second round pick for Quinton. I don't know.
- 1:37:11Speaker 2: I'm not telling you I would have said no. I'm
- 1:37:13Speaker 2: just saying I think you have to think about it.
- 1:37:14Speaker 4: And all the money that they already invested in the
- 1:37:16Speaker 4: guard and the offensive line in general. I know that
- 1:37:19Speaker 4: on winters in the contract year he's going to be
- 1:37:21Speaker 4: a free agent, but they have $ 25 million worth of
- 1:37:24Speaker 4: guards on injured reserve right now. So just from a
- 1:37:28Speaker 4: roster building standpoint... And you add $ 10 million for Quentin Nelson.
- 1:37:32Speaker 4: So now you're paying $ 35 million in guards on your team,
- 1:37:37Speaker 4: not to mention the investment of the draft capital and
- 1:37:39Speaker 4: all that stuff, too. Just from a roster-building standpoint, it's
- 1:37:43Speaker 4: one thing to go get a Greg Van Roten type
- 1:37:46Speaker 4: that's a veteran that's played the position.
- 1:37:48Speaker 2: Even that's probably more expensive than you want it to be. Yeah,
- 1:37:51Speaker 2: but at least that one I can be like, okay,
- 1:37:52Speaker 2: that's a.
- 1:37:56Speaker 2: You know, a guy that you hope can just be steady.
- 1:37:58Speaker 4: But to go out and make a splash like that
- 1:38:00Speaker 4: after you just signed Vera Tucker in free agency and
- 1:38:03Speaker 4: use first round picks and back to back drafts on
- 1:38:05Speaker 4: offensive linemen, it's just a lot.
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: I struggle on this. So I know the next two
- 1:38:09Speaker 1: weeks are being constantly trades and who should we trade?
- 1:38:12Speaker 1: I just I I don't know where to do it.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: I mean, I know you need to be. serviceable at guard,
- 1:38:17Speaker 1: and I think that that, you know, I wouldn't be
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: willing to overpay for that.
- 1:38:20Speaker 9: And I think they were serviceable at guard the other night.
- 1:38:23Speaker 2: That didn't destroy the game.
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: I don't see any position where I'm really willing to
- 1:38:26Speaker 1: give up and feel like, all right, that's going to
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: put them over the top. This is, you know, like
- 1:38:31Speaker 1: the young edges. I mean, you still got Harold Landry.
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: Is he going to come back? I mean, you know,
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: I'd rather have some of these young guys.
- 1:38:37Speaker 8: Yeah, 2027 third and a 2028 fifth.
- 1:38:39Speaker 2: Call Paul. Paul nailed it.
- 1:38:41Speaker 9: No, I just like, I was just, he's got to
- 1:38:42Speaker 9: be worth the third comp pick, right? If he signs
- 1:38:45Speaker 9: as a free agent. And I know that would be
- 1:38:46Speaker 9: in the future. Um, I just kind of said that
- 1:38:50Speaker 9: off the top of my head when you watched. Did
- 1:38:52Speaker 9: you feel like the guards sort of destroyed the game?
- 1:38:56Speaker 4: No, I actually thought Walter Rouse was promising. I thought
- 1:39:00Speaker 4: that his performance in the game was pretty... Penalty each, but... Yeah,
- 1:39:04Speaker 4: Pryor is what he is. He's slower-footed at this point
- 1:39:07Speaker 4: of his career, and he's sturdy.
- 1:39:09Speaker 2: He's got a good base to him.
- 1:39:11Speaker 4: He can move people on the line of scrimmage, but
- 1:39:12Speaker 4: he's not going to be a high-level pass blocker at
- 1:39:15Speaker 4: this point. Rouse is, you know, maybe they have a
- 1:39:18Speaker 4: little something there, like a Ben Brown type, like a
- 1:39:20Speaker 4: guy that can swing and play inside.
- 1:39:22Speaker 1: We interviewed him yesterday, first time we talked to him,
- 1:39:24Speaker 1: but really, really nice kid. I mean, really good head
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: on his shoulders, aware of everything that's going on. You know,
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: just one of those guys after you hear from him,
- 1:39:30Speaker 1: you're like, I want to root for this guy. Like,
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: he seems like he's invested in this.
- 1:39:33Speaker 4: He made a really good block on Kyler Gordon. The
- 1:39:37Speaker 4: guy over him dropped out of the rush and Gordon
- 1:39:39Speaker 4: blitzed from the slot, and he got his eyes out
- 1:39:41Speaker 4: to Gordon and put Gordon in the ground.
- 1:39:43Speaker 2: And I was like, good awareness, you know, of things
- 1:39:45Speaker 2: that are happening.
- 1:39:46Speaker 4: So I actually thought that he looked like somebody that, okay,
- 1:39:50Speaker 4: maybe he could be like a quality backup spot starter
- 1:39:53Speaker 4: type of player if he keeps on this trajectory.
- 1:39:55Speaker 7: Jeff?
- 1:39:56Speaker 1: This is funny how this all works now with ESPN.
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: Schefter announces it, then Pellicero's got the terms, but it's
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: Schefter and Rap Sheet. It used to be they were
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: all kind of competing for stories, and now it's like
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: any breaking news, they're all in on it.
- 1:40:10Speaker 2: Pellicero's by himself. Oh, right.
- 1:40:12Speaker 5: You take the first one, I'll take this detail, and
- 1:40:13Speaker 5: you take that detail.
- 1:40:14Speaker 1: But that's huge for him, right, just to get the
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: terms quick.
- 1:40:16Speaker 2: That's definitely the Schefter-Rapaport thing right now.
- 1:40:19Speaker 4: Pellicero's kind of kicking their butts. He's been getting a
- 1:40:22Speaker 4: lot of the scoops first.
- 1:40:24Speaker 5: Let's see. Jeff in Canada might be an unpopular opinion,
- 1:40:28Speaker 5: but I thought that was the best game Drake played
- 1:40:30Speaker 5: in the NFL. I like Paul. Don't count exhibition games
- 1:40:35Speaker 5: against the Jets practice squad. He threw a pick.
- 1:40:38Speaker 2: That's fair. That's fair. Like, this is a bigger spot,
- 1:40:42Speaker 2: so he gets more credit for it. That's good reasoning.
- 1:40:45Speaker 5: He threw a pick. Yes, it happens. See Tom Brady
- 1:40:47Speaker 5: in the fabled 2018 AFC Championship game. He threw two,
- 1:40:51Speaker 5: one in the end zone. I do notice May seems
- 1:40:54Speaker 5: to struggle with touch versus velocity in the red zone.
- 1:40:57Speaker 5: What is the best way to improve this? Is it
- 1:40:59Speaker 5: reps or play calls? P.S., I've already demoted Henderson to RB3.
- 1:41:05Speaker 5: Please pass this information on to Vrabes and Josh. I
- 1:41:08Speaker 5: think the velocity thing is confidence. He's just got to
- 1:41:11Speaker 5: be sure of his pass. Be sure of his decision
- 1:41:15Speaker 5: and just, you know.
- 1:41:16Speaker 8: I think I don't want to look too much into it.
- 1:41:18Speaker 8: I think he made a bad throw.
- 1:41:19Speaker 4: I don't know if there's, like, anything bigger than, like, it's,
- 1:41:23Speaker 4: he doesn't know how to wait the ball or anything
- 1:41:25Speaker 4: like that.
- 1:41:26Speaker 2: I didn't have a problem with that one.
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: I just think there's been a difference between the first
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: few game Drake and like that felt unsure and not
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: putting it in.
- 1:41:33Speaker 6: Now.
- 1:41:33Speaker 1: I didn't really see that last couple of games.
- 1:41:35Speaker 2: This was a bad throw. Yeah. It wasn't a bad decision.
- 1:41:37Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:41:37Speaker 8: He was trying to look off.
- 1:41:39Speaker 4: He was trying to look off the safety and then
- 1:41:41Speaker 4: kind of not like no look it, but kind of
- 1:41:43Speaker 4: just come back to it like quickly. And he just
- 1:41:45Speaker 4: didn't see where the linebacker was in relation to Raritan.
- 1:41:48Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 1:41:49Speaker 5: And like, I agree.
- 1:41:50Speaker 4: Didn't put the ball in the right place on the throw.
- 1:41:53Speaker 4: the best game of his career, I still feel like
- 1:41:56Speaker 4: was last year in Buffalo. And I'm not like that
- 1:41:59Speaker 4: one is going to be tough to top to me
- 1:42:01Speaker 4: because of the level of difficulty of some of the
- 1:42:04Speaker 4: throws that he made. I mean, the best throw of
- 1:42:06Speaker 4: his career is the one that digs on the sideline there.
- 1:42:08Speaker 4: I think that that is the best throw he's ever
- 1:42:10Speaker 4: made in the NFL.
- 1:42:11Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:42:12Speaker 9: And that was an amazing throw. And then he did
- 1:42:16Speaker 9: some of those things in like, got to have a
- 1:42:18Speaker 9: third down spots too.
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: Like, Yeah, shrugging the guy off.
- 1:42:21Speaker 9: But I like the emailer saying, like, you know, I'm
- 1:42:24Speaker 9: not necessarily counting when we're playing the JVs from the
- 1:42:27Speaker 9: Jets and we're throwing five touchdown passes in a half.
- 1:42:30Speaker 2: I agree.
- 1:42:31Speaker 5: The throw to Booty against Houston in the playoffs was
- 1:42:33Speaker 5: a good throw, too.
- 1:42:34Speaker 2: Yeah, but it was a better catch. In the game
- 1:42:36Speaker 2: as a totality, it wasn't there. Your guy with a one-hander.
- 1:42:39Speaker 4: Maybe it was just because the Buffalo game was kind
- 1:42:41Speaker 4: of the coming-out party, but... In Buffalo, prime time.
- 1:42:45Speaker 2: Consider the spot.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: They've won the division in the last, whatever, five years.
- 1:42:48Speaker 2: Outplayed Josh Allen. I thought he was pretty good in
- 1:42:49Speaker 2: the game.
- 1:42:50Speaker 9: I thought the third quarter, that touchdown drive in the
- 1:42:52Speaker 9: third quarter was exceptional.
- 1:42:54Speaker 2: I thought that was as good as I've seen him.
- 1:42:56Speaker 5: Sean from Spokane, Washington. Can you guys explain how the
- 1:43:00Speaker 5: Dallas Cowboys got six, most behind the Chiefs, which had
- 1:43:05Speaker 5: seven primetime games last season? In this season, the Cowboys
- 1:43:09Speaker 5: already have four primetime games through seven weeks, most in
- 1:43:12Speaker 5: the NFL. And then he goes into their record. So why?
- 1:43:16Speaker 5: Because they have a huge fan base.
- 1:43:18Speaker 9: And the league hates him and they want to give
- 1:43:19Speaker 9: him the primetime gains, which are harder to navigate.
- 1:43:22Speaker 5: I don't know about that, but it's ratings. It's all
- 1:43:24Speaker 5: about money. Whenever there's a question about why, it's money.
- 1:43:29Speaker 5: It's always money. The Cowboys have this huge, huge fan base,
- 1:43:34Speaker 5: second to none. And when they're on TV, people watch.
- 1:43:39Speaker 5: That's why. It's that simple.
- 1:43:40Speaker 9: And they're a polarizing team. People watch to root against you.
- 1:43:43Speaker 9: People like you, Fred.
- 1:43:45Speaker 2: My father.
- 1:43:45Speaker 5: That's true.
- 1:43:47Speaker 2: Your father? You don't like the Cowboys?
- 1:43:49Speaker 8: Can we go back to the Colts thing real quick
- 1:43:50Speaker 8: for a second?
- 1:43:51Speaker 2: Let's go back to the Colts.
- 1:43:52Speaker 8: Any interest in Grover Stewart?
- 1:43:54Speaker 2: Sure. Absolutely. Because I have a lot of interest in
- 1:43:57Speaker 2: Grover Stewart.
- 1:43:57Speaker 1: That's a position you could talk about.
- 1:43:59Speaker 8: If you want to finish out this defensive line.
- 1:44:02Speaker 4: and get a true nose tackle, run stuffer in the
- 1:44:04Speaker 4: middle of Milton Williams and Christian Barmore, I think that
- 1:44:08Speaker 4: would improve the defense on the margins quite a bit.
- 1:44:10Speaker 2: Just pillaging the Colts.
- 1:44:12Speaker 5: Well, apparently.
- 1:44:14Speaker 2: They're open for business. Schultz just said that DeForest Buckner's next. Yeah.
- 1:44:18Speaker 2: That he's getting... He's on the block, and he's going next.
- 1:44:20Speaker 9: I'd take him, too, but... Wow, Dante Moore will not
- 1:44:23Speaker 9: play for the remainder of the season. That's big for Oregon.
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I think he's a free.
- 1:44:27Speaker 2: Is he a free agent next year?
- 1:44:28Speaker 8: Josh Downs.
- 1:44:29Speaker 2: Josh Downs? Um... How do I think about that one?
- 1:44:32Speaker 8: Yes, they're all in the same class, him and Pop.
- 1:44:35Speaker 5: Bryn writes in, to set the record straight, he says,
- 1:44:40Speaker 5: Mahi Mahi is not a kind of dolphin. Dolphins are mammals,
- 1:44:44Speaker 5: but Mahi Mahi is a kind of fish. The only
- 1:44:47Speaker 5: connection is that Mahi Mahi are sometimes called a dolphin fish,
- 1:44:52Speaker 5: but it's only the name that has a connection. Again,
- 1:44:54Speaker 5: There are two different species that live in the ocean.
- 1:44:56Speaker 5: We all know that.
- 1:44:57Speaker 2: That's what Fred said.
- 1:44:58Speaker 5: We said one's a fish, one's a mammal.
- 1:45:00Speaker 2: I didn't know that.
- 1:45:01Speaker 5: We said that, Brent.
- 1:45:02Speaker 2: You learned that to me. You taught me that. I
- 1:45:05Speaker 2: love it. I always thought mahi-mahi was tuna.
- 1:45:09Speaker 1: That's ahi.
- 1:45:10Speaker 2: It's ahi tuna.
- 1:45:13Speaker 4: Mahi-mahi is very big in the Caribbean, so I've had
- 1:45:16Speaker 4: quite a bit of mahi-mahi in my life.
- 1:45:18Speaker 2: I don't eat any of it. It's very good.
- 1:45:22Speaker 5: You haven't had fish in a long time, Paul. Since
- 1:45:26Speaker 5: you were 10. No. No, seriously.
- 1:45:29Speaker 2: I've had it since then.
- 1:45:29Speaker 5: I thought you haven't. I have.
- 1:45:31Speaker 2: Why are you telling me what I haven't had?
- 1:45:32Speaker 5: Because I know you haven't.
- 1:45:34Speaker 2: You don't know everything about me.
- 1:45:35Speaker 8: What is the festival of fishes?
- 1:45:36Speaker 2: I know a lot. You do know a lot.
- 1:45:38Speaker 8: It's the seven fishes.
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: What is that seven fishes thing you guys do?
- 1:45:40Speaker 2: We don't do that.
- 1:45:41Speaker 5: Come on.
- 1:45:41Speaker 2: We don't do that in Christmas.
- 1:45:42Speaker 1: Mahi Mahi is not one of the seven fishes?
- 1:45:44Speaker 2: The seven fish are ravioli. Dolphin. Lasagna.
- 1:45:47Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:45:48Speaker 2: A little manicotti. It's the seven mammals. A little what? Manicotti.
- 1:45:56Speaker 5: What about tuna fish sandwich?
- 1:45:58Speaker 2: Oh, I love tuna fish sandwiches.
- 1:46:00Speaker 5: Oh, then you have fish.
- 1:46:01Speaker 2: I told you I've had fish since I was 10. Yeah.
- 1:46:05Speaker 5: But I think you'd like a good swordfish.
- 1:46:06Speaker 2: I also had like a swordfish steak as an adult.
- 1:46:10Speaker 5: Yeah. That's fish.
- 1:46:13Speaker 2: No, I know. I'm trying to explain to you I've
- 1:46:15Speaker 2: had fish since.
- 1:46:16Speaker 5: I was 10. But there's other fish you might like too.
- 1:46:17Speaker 5: If you like swordfish, you might like salmon.
- 1:46:19Speaker 2: I was at a wedding rehearsal dinner.
- 1:46:22Speaker 5: You don't like salmon?
- 1:46:22Speaker 2: I don't like salmon. You're going to like, just get
- 1:46:25Speaker 2: a steak.
- 1:46:25Speaker 5: Yeah. Yeah. Beef.
- 1:46:27Speaker 2: Better. It is better.
- 1:46:28Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:46:29Speaker 8: You're going to have like a... That's why I gravitate
- 1:46:31Speaker 8: toward that.
- 1:46:32Speaker 5: By the way, I won't name the steakhouse. Uh-oh. Because
- 1:46:35Speaker 5: when we're on the road, I usually eat at a steakhouse.
- 1:46:36Speaker 5: And I noticed lately that a lot of the steakhouses
- 1:46:41Speaker 5: are over-salting their steaks. Oh. And I think it's because...
- 1:46:45Speaker 5: People like flavor? I think they're trying to make them
- 1:46:47Speaker 5: last longer.
- 1:46:48Speaker 2: Oh.
- 1:46:48Speaker 5: And I think they're over-salted.
- 1:46:50Speaker 2: Great theory. Now, when you go to the steak... The
- 1:46:53Speaker 2: steakhouse is on the road. Do you go to local
- 1:46:56Speaker 2: places or do you go to chains?
- 1:46:59Speaker 8: Capital Grill.
- 1:47:00Speaker 5: No, usually try to go to the best steakhouse that's
- 1:47:04Speaker 5: a local place.
- 1:47:05Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:47:07Speaker 5: But once in a while, you can't find one. You
- 1:47:09Speaker 5: can never go wrong going to a Capital Grill.
- 1:47:11Speaker 9: I know, but you can go to a Capital Grill anywhere.
- 1:47:14Speaker 5: So when we were in Seattle, we went to this
- 1:47:16Speaker 5: place called The Metropolitan. I think that's what it was called.
- 1:47:19Speaker 5: It was like the place. And it wasn't that great.
- 1:47:22Speaker 5: I have to tell you, the ambiance was awesome. But,
- 1:47:26Speaker 5: you know, and then we went to a place in Chicago.
- 1:47:28Speaker 5: I won't mention the name.
- 1:47:32Speaker 2: But you threw the one from Seattle right under the bus.
- 1:47:34Speaker 5: Yeah, that's true.
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: It's far away.
- 1:47:37Speaker 5: Well, I don't want to get. Kat invited us, and
- 1:47:39Speaker 5: so she picked it. I don't want to.
- 1:47:42Speaker 2: I did go to a place in Charleston the last
- 1:47:44Speaker 2: time I was down there, like a couple weeks ago.
- 1:47:46Speaker 2: It was called Hall's Chop House.
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: Oh, that sounds good.
- 1:47:49Speaker 2: It was really good.
- 1:47:50Speaker 9: It was better food, but a very similar ambiance to St.
- 1:47:55Speaker 12: Elmo.
- 1:47:56Speaker 9: You know, like kind of that old school, like kind
- 1:47:59Speaker 9: of dark, different rooms. You kind of felt like you
- 1:48:02Speaker 9: had some privacy within... You know, a restaurant, but really,
- 1:48:06Speaker 9: really good.
- 1:48:06Speaker 8: What'd you get?
- 1:48:06Speaker 2: What'd you get, Evan? Chicago?
- 1:48:07Speaker 1: Did you get anywhere special?
- 1:48:09Speaker 2: Deep Dish. Yeah, we went to... Did you go to Uno's?
- 1:48:11Speaker 5: Did you go to the original one?
- 1:48:12Speaker 2: No. No, Luma Lattes?
- 1:48:14Speaker 4: We went to the other one, Pequod's? Yeah, because we
- 1:48:19Speaker 4: went to Luma Almanac.
- 1:48:20Speaker 2: Whatever it is.
- 1:48:21Speaker 4: We went there the last time. Drake May's rookie year
- 1:48:26Speaker 4: when we were in Chicago.
- 1:48:27Speaker 2: Big win.
- 1:48:29Speaker 5: Did you like it?
- 1:48:30Speaker 2: Yeah, it was really good.
- 1:48:32Speaker 5: Couldn't eat a lot, though, right? Very dense. No.
- 1:48:34Speaker 2: Couldn't.
- 1:48:35Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:48:35Speaker 2: It was very good. Now, with your gluten, can you
- 1:48:39Speaker 2: eat that?
- 1:48:39Speaker 8: Dairy-free.
- 1:48:40Speaker 5: Dairy-free.
- 1:48:40Speaker 2: Dairy-free.
- 1:48:41Speaker 5: Big, like... How do you have dairy-free deep dish?
- 1:48:43Speaker 8: Dairy-free cheese.
- 1:48:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:45Speaker 5: If cheese, it's not made out of.
- 1:48:47Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:48:48Speaker 8: It's made out of, like.
- 1:48:50Speaker 2: But they have these, like, big, like, cast iron, like...
- 1:48:53Speaker 2: They spit on it. Deep dish.
- 1:48:55Speaker 8: And they have, like, these handles... So that they can take.
- 1:48:58Speaker 4: Them out of the oven without burning themselves or whatever.
- 1:49:01Speaker 4: And they carry them around by the handle. So they
- 1:49:03Speaker 4: don't have to put their hands on the big cast
- 1:49:08Speaker 4: iron thing.
- 1:49:09Speaker 2: I can't have gloves.
- 1:49:12Speaker 4: And so they literally walk around with it like this.
- 1:49:14Speaker 4: And it's just like a clamp.
- 1:49:16Speaker 2: That sounds nice.
- 1:49:17Speaker 8: It's interesting.
- 1:49:18Speaker 2: That's cool.
- 1:49:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:49:20Speaker 2: Fred, here's your game. BYU UCF.
- 1:49:22Speaker 9: Yeah. Yeah.
- 1:49:25Speaker 5: Um, let's see, Adam in Louisiana writes in, uh, the
- 1:49:28Speaker 5: interception Drake threw to the bears was identical to all
- 1:49:32Speaker 5: the times he would throw at the back of the
- 1:49:34Speaker 5: linebackers last year and have Henry or Hooper come down with.
- 1:49:38Speaker 5: I remember him making that exact throw multiple times last year,
- 1:49:42Speaker 5: throw it at the linebackers back and hope he doesn't
- 1:49:44Speaker 5: turn his head. Evan praised it last year, but hated
- 1:49:47Speaker 5: it every time. All it takes is for the linebacker
- 1:49:51Speaker 5: to turn his head.
- 1:49:51Speaker 8: Well, this one was like woefully underthrown.
- 1:49:54Speaker 2: That's the difference.
- 1:49:57Speaker 4: It's true. The back is to the quarterback. You can't
- 1:50:00Speaker 4: see the ball. If you put it up and over
- 1:50:03Speaker 4: his head, but he didn't put it up over his head.
- 1:50:05Speaker 4: He underthrew it.
- 1:50:06Speaker 9: You could make an argument that this pass would have
- 1:50:09Speaker 9: fallen incomplete had the linebacker.
- 1:50:11Speaker 2: Not turned his head.
- 1:50:12Speaker 5: Oh, yeah.
- 1:50:12Speaker 2: No, it wouldn't have made it. Because I don't think
- 1:50:13Speaker 2: it would have reached him.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: It could have played by him, too, to get his
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: head around and make the catch.
- 1:50:17Speaker 5: Right.
- 1:50:17Speaker 9: And it may have been like if the linebacker doesn't
- 1:50:21Speaker 9: turn around and Raritan makes a play on the ball,
- 1:50:23Speaker 9: it may have created a penalty because he wouldn't be looking,
- 1:50:26Speaker 9: and now he's going to try to run through the defender.
- 1:50:28Speaker 2: He gets a penalty, but it wasn't going to get completed.
- 1:50:32Speaker 9: Those passes I think that he's talking about the tight
- 1:50:35Speaker 9: end was able to get his hands on around the linebacker.
- 1:50:38Speaker 2: Or over the linebacker.
- 1:50:41Speaker 4: Caught it over him. No matter what, he had to
- 1:50:45Speaker 4: put it up. Your tight end's 6'6. Put it up
- 1:50:48Speaker 4: above his head.
- 1:50:49Speaker 9: If he puts it up to the outside, now it
- 1:50:52Speaker 9: can't be caught by anybody but Raritan.
- 1:50:54Speaker 4: Back shoulder, up on the back shoulder was the perfect
- 1:50:57Speaker 4: place to put it. But anything above the guy's head,
- 1:50:59Speaker 4: it would have been catchable.
- 1:51:00Speaker 8: It would have been fine. Just underthrew it.
- 1:51:03Speaker 5: Thorder from Iceland. writes in.
- 1:51:05Speaker 2: Thor. Thor.
- 1:51:06Speaker 5: Yeah, got to put a pin in that one. Whatever
- 1:51:08Speaker 5: happened to our map with all the countries?
- 1:51:10Speaker 6: I don't know.
- 1:51:10Speaker 2: It's in the closet.
- 1:51:11Speaker 5: It's in the closet?
- 1:51:12Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:51:13Speaker 5: He has some criticism of Christian from L.A. Oh, easy.
- 1:51:16Speaker 5: He said, in the latest episode, Christian said, which is
- 1:51:21Speaker 5: not correct Icelandic. In fact, it isn't Icelandic at all.
- 1:51:26Speaker 5: To wish someone a happy birthday in proper Icelandic, you say,
- 1:51:29Speaker 5: til amming ju met af mi lit.
- 1:51:34Speaker 2: Of course.
- 1:51:35Speaker 5: Translation, congratulations on your birthday. Literal meaning, to happiness with
- 1:51:39Speaker 5: the birthday. So there. And to defend himself because he
- 1:51:44Speaker 5: knew this call was coming.
- 1:51:45Speaker 1: Icelandic fight.
- 1:51:46Speaker 5: Yeah. Christian in L.A. who does not know how to
- 1:51:50Speaker 5: speak Icelandic.
- 1:51:52Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:51:52Speaker 14: Apparently, whoever Thor there is, He doesn't sing happy birthday,
- 1:51:56Speaker 14: because when you're in Iceland and they sing happy birthday,
- 1:51:59Speaker 14: they do not sing congratulations on a good birthday day.
- 1:52:02Speaker 14: They say huna amalida, which translates into happy birthday to you.
- 1:52:06Speaker 5: I don't know. He's from Iceland, so I don't know.
- 1:52:09Speaker 2: It's right on brand now.
- 1:52:11Speaker 14: Huna amalida. You can say lots of different things.
- 1:52:13Speaker 2: Yes, you can.
- 1:52:14Speaker 14: Literally say congratulations on the birthday to you, but if
- 1:52:17Speaker 14: you are phonetically correct, you say happy birthday to you,
- 1:52:20Speaker 14: which is the same four words that we have phonetically.
- 1:52:23Speaker 14: It's just those specific words. Please feel free to look
- 1:52:25Speaker 14: it up. I always come with receipts. Anyway, hey, you guys.
- 1:52:28Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:52:30Speaker 7: Yes.
- 1:52:30Speaker 2: So on to.
- 1:52:31Speaker 14: The football stuff. One, for the kickoff return, if they
- 1:52:35Speaker 14: want to make the game exciting and they want to
- 1:52:38Speaker 14: prevent more injuries, take two people off of each team
- 1:52:41Speaker 14: off the field on the kickoff return. More space. You're
- 1:52:46Speaker 14: saving four guys the potential of injury, and you might
- 1:52:48Speaker 14: get an exciting play that makes them touchdowns. But that's
- 1:52:51Speaker 14: what I'm– My thing on.
- 1:52:52Speaker 5: The kickoff return.
- 1:52:53Speaker 14: As far as the game goes, yeah, let's give the
- 1:52:55Speaker 14: guys a pass. It was a pretty short week, and
- 1:52:58Speaker 14: they came and they showed heart, which is the most
- 1:53:00Speaker 14: important thing that they could do. Third thing, this guy
- 1:53:04Speaker 14: with the gun situation in Tennessee, bad decision. I don't
- 1:53:07Speaker 14: know if it says anything about his character. Obviously, Stoller
- 1:53:10Speaker 14: was willing to go to bat for him. Vrabel might
- 1:53:13Speaker 14: have coached him before.
- 1:53:14Speaker 2: This guy seems.
- 1:53:15Speaker 14: Like a big run stopper. Is there any chance outside
- 1:53:18Speaker 14: of the Patriot way and the whole culture thing that
- 1:53:20Speaker 14: we talk about now that Vrabel is, you know, hmm,
- 1:53:23Speaker 14: can we get this guy? And then my last thing
- 1:53:25Speaker 14: I got is this, and this is the most important thing.
- 1:53:28Speaker 14: How many more games do we give A.J. before the
- 1:53:30Speaker 14: conversation starts? You had the whole offseason, you had the
- 1:53:34Speaker 14: whole preseason, and now you've had the whole regular season.
- 1:53:38Speaker 14: if you can't catch the ball and you don't have
- 1:53:39Speaker 14: explosiveness after injury at his age, the conversation is going
- 1:53:43Speaker 14: to start. And the thing I fear with AJ Brown
- 1:53:46Speaker 14: is once the conversation starts, his head is going to
- 1:53:48Speaker 14: check out. I'll take it off the air.
- 1:53:50Speaker 5: Love you. What do you mean?
- 1:53:51Speaker 8: What conversation?
- 1:53:53Speaker 5: Well, that he's not, he's lost it.
- 1:53:55Speaker 8: Oh, I think that word people are already having that conversation.
- 1:53:57Speaker 2: Well, I think it's been, yeah, it got loud this way.
- 1:54:01Speaker 9: I think a lot of people, myself included, and this
- 1:54:03Speaker 9: is not, I know people say that I be hypocritical.
- 1:54:06Speaker 5: Um, I.
- 1:54:12Speaker 9: Came out of the Jets game very encouraged by how
- 1:54:14Speaker 9: open he was. And I was just saying, well, you
- 1:54:16Speaker 9: didn't catch the ball. And I'm not really worried about
- 1:54:18Speaker 9: that because the guys caught the ball his whole career.
- 1:54:20Speaker 9: I don't have the same enthusiasm after this game as
- 1:54:23Speaker 9: I did after the Jets game. Now, there's probably Mike's
- 1:54:26Speaker 9: point about five days later on a bad ankle. Maybe
- 1:54:30Speaker 9: he was less mobile than he was in the Jets game.
- 1:54:33Speaker 2: Absolutely.
- 1:54:34Speaker 9: But he did not create the same kind of separation
- 1:54:36Speaker 9: in this game. He was not really involved.
- 1:54:40Speaker 2: And I didn't like, to Christian's point, I kind of
- 1:54:42Speaker 2: agree with him.
- 1:54:42Speaker 9: I didn't like kind of the compete level on a
- 1:54:45Speaker 9: couple of the deep balls.
- 1:54:46Speaker 2: I thought, at least go up and try to make
- 1:54:48Speaker 2: a play on the ball. I'm hoping that in two
- 1:54:50Speaker 2: months he didn't lose it. Jaggi cornerbacks, I think, were
- 1:54:53Speaker 2: stride for stride with him.
- 1:54:53Speaker 5: He'll be better in this game. And then it'll be, well,
- 1:54:56Speaker 5: it's the Dolphins. He'll be better in this game.
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm trying to be patient with him. I think
- 1:55:01Speaker 1: the compete thing is valid. But two days, two games
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: in five days coming off an injury that we thought
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: might have cost him at least six. I mean, he
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: came right back. You know, I felt like, oh, this
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: is going to be at least six weeks. So, look,
- 1:55:15Speaker 1: I get it.
- 1:55:15Speaker 2: And it's murmuring.
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: And it should be. But the biggest games are still coming.
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: And I hope that A.J. Brown is going to get
- 1:55:21Speaker 1: back to the point that we saw him play this summer.
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: I know he's better than what he's put up the
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: last couple weeks. All that said, I do think the
- 1:55:27Speaker 1: compete stuff is something that that. I mean, she already
- 1:55:30Speaker 1: asked Vrabel directly about it. That's under the surface too.
- 1:55:33Speaker 4: I think the, uh, the catch point stuff is the,
- 1:55:36Speaker 4: like at this stage of his career, he has to win.
- 1:55:39Speaker 2: At the catch point.
- 1:55:40Speaker 5: Totally.
- 1:55:40Speaker 4: He's not going to be blowing by people anymore and,
- 1:55:44Speaker 4: you know, losing coverage like he was maybe four or
- 1:55:46Speaker 4: five years ago. So like now he's going to be
- 1:55:49Speaker 4: in contested situations and, He's extremely strong, and he's a
- 1:55:53Speaker 4: big dude, and he's got to be able to out-muscle
- 1:55:56Speaker 4: guys for the ball, not only on deep balls, but
- 1:55:59Speaker 4: also if there's a guy on his back, he should
- 1:56:01Speaker 4: be able to box him out on, like, an in-cut
- 1:56:04Speaker 4: or a curl and make the catch.
- 1:56:05Speaker 5: He's got to go get the ball.
- 1:56:06Speaker 2: That's why I worry about the ankle.
- 1:56:08Speaker 11: Yeah.
- 1:56:08Speaker 9: Like, can he explode to the ball, you know, as
- 1:56:11Speaker 9: you just put it, at the catch point?
- 1:56:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:56:13Speaker 9: Can he go up and explode, like, Mike and I
- 1:56:16Speaker 9: were watching that comeback, which was really his only catch
- 1:56:19Speaker 9: of the game in the regular part of the game.
- 1:56:22Speaker 9: And it took him a while to bottle down, turn,
- 1:56:25Speaker 9: and come back. So I know he's not healthy. That's
- 1:56:29Speaker 9: not the same guy I saw in training camp.
- 1:56:31Speaker 4: I do wonder if there's a world where they can
- 1:56:34Speaker 4: do what they did with Diggs last year and only
- 1:56:36Speaker 4: play him like 55, 60% of the snaps.
- 1:56:39Speaker 1: Yeah, we'll get Matt Collins, you know, we'll get Matt,
- 1:56:42Speaker 1: start to get some depth back. And then it's, I mean,
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: it's just, it doesn't feel like it's going to work
- 1:56:46Speaker 1: with AJ Brown and the little kids, right? Like, it's not,
- 1:56:49Speaker 1: it's not going to work.
- 1:56:49Speaker 2: Because, like, everybody's, like, talking about the run blocking and, like.
- 1:56:52Speaker 2: I don't care about that.
- 1:56:54Speaker 9: Does anybody criticize, like, Jackson Smith and Jiglip for not
- 1:56:57Speaker 9: springing the running game in Seattle? Like, if he was producing,
- 1:57:01Speaker 9: this wouldn't be an issue. He's not producing, and that's
- 1:57:03Speaker 9: why this is an issue.
- 1:57:04Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 1:57:05Speaker 5: Jack in an Abba, as far as steakhouses go, says
- 1:57:09Speaker 5: in Chicago it's got to be Gene and Georgette's. I've
- 1:57:11Speaker 5: heard of that place.
- 1:57:12Speaker 2: That's where the crew went.
- 1:57:13Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 1:57:14Speaker 2: The radio crew and some others went there. Yeah, I
- 1:57:16Speaker 2: know the spots.
- 1:57:17Speaker 5: Gene and Georgette's.
- 1:57:18Speaker 8: Their budget's a little high.
- 1:57:19Speaker 5: In Arbor, if you're wondering, it's the Chop House on
- 1:57:22Speaker 5: Main Street.
- 1:57:23Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:57:25Speaker 11: Where?
- 1:57:26Speaker 5: In Arbor, Michigan.
- 1:57:27Speaker 15: In Arbor.
- 1:57:28Speaker 5: In Arbor. In case we're there. Okay. Let's see. Who's this?
- 1:57:33Speaker 5: Jeff writes in, forget a new car. Paul needs a
- 1:57:36Speaker 5: new pair of shoes.
- 1:57:37Speaker 2: You like the hole?
- 1:57:38Speaker 10: Yeah.
- 1:57:40Speaker 5: That's just poor to me.
- 1:57:43Speaker 2: You have no more excuses. I don't want to put
- 1:57:45Speaker 2: your public info on it.
- 1:57:47Speaker 9: That ink is not dry just yet.
- 1:57:51Speaker 2: I got some things in the works.
- 1:57:52Speaker 8: I want to see a car.
- 1:57:53Speaker 2: I want a whole new wardrobe that fits. You're not
- 1:57:56Speaker 2: going to get a new wardrobe. It is what it is.
- 1:57:58Speaker 2: I wear quarter zips every day.
- 1:57:59Speaker 8: I don't care about the quarter zips.
- 1:58:01Speaker 1: They're wearing suits every day.
- 1:58:04Speaker 5: The pants.
- 1:58:05Speaker 2: The pants fit too. They would fit the old you
- 1:58:09Speaker 2: as well. No, they wouldn't.
- 1:58:12Speaker 5: You look more stylish.
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: Maybe a fedora.
- 1:58:17Speaker 5: You dress like Florence Henderson on the Brady Bunch. I mean,
- 1:58:20Speaker 5: they're mom pants.
- 1:58:21Speaker 2: This is what I'm... Taking fashion advice from this guy.
- 1:58:27Speaker 5: All right. That's going to be it for this edition
- 1:58:30Speaker 5: of Patriots Unfiltered. We'll be back tomorrow.
- 1:58:33Speaker 2: He's got crumbs on him. He's got stuff on him.
- 1:58:36Speaker 8: He's had crumbs on me.
- 1:58:37Speaker 5: The whole show, actually.
- 1:58:40Speaker 2: Just some tendy crumbs.
- 1:58:41Speaker 5: But that's what I do.
- 1:58:42Speaker 2: It is what you do.
- 1:58:43Speaker 1: It's part of his character.
- 1:58:44Speaker 2: It is part of your charm.
- 1:58:45Speaker 5: All right. We'll be back tomorrow at noon. More calls
- 1:58:48Speaker 5: and emails. We will turn the page to the Miami
- 1:58:50Speaker 5: Dolphins and talk about What a bloodbath that's going to be.
- 1:58:54Speaker 2: Big get-right game.
- 1:58:55Speaker 5: All right. We'll see you then.
- 1:58:58Speaker 2: Hey, this is Deuce.
- 1:58:59Speaker 1: Thanks for tuning into the show. If you really want
- 1:59:01Speaker 1: to help us, make sure you like us wherever you
