- 1:22show and this week's, so here now from November the sixth of nineteen forty
- 1:30nine is the case of the Unhappy Homicide. The Adventures of the Saint,
- 1:53starring Vincent Price, based on characters created by Leslie chargerments a non Familion from
- 2:06Books Magazine. From Motion Pictures, The Robin Hood of Modern Crime. Now
- 2:10come to radio, Darling Hollywood's brilliant and talented actor of him from Price The
- 2:17Same Waiter, Yes, waiter, Will you tell the chef of this unhappy
- 2:23restaurant that he'd make a better shoemaker? Get this miserableok, and catch It's
- 2:30called a salad. Don't but me something to take. Someone is waiting for
- 2:36you at another paper. I'll get back to him at once. Warn him
- 2:38against eating anything in this establishment. Tell him his life is in danger.
- 2:42There is something change about the gentleman. I think he has a gun in
- 2:46his pocket. More severe critic of food than I am. Well, tell
- 2:50the chef he better flee for his life. Do you wish to see the
- 2:52chef? No, he'll have to look out for himself, not the chef,
- 2:54the little man. Little prayer about it? Yuh ography. How do
- 3:07you do you wish to see me? Mister templar? My name is Potts.
- 3:10How do you do I need help? I'm the senior partner pots and
- 3:14Carter Jeweler's Extraordinary Extraordinary. Earlier this evening, mister Carter was killed. Too
- 3:21bad, mister Templar. It wasn't an accident. Oh he was murdered.
- 3:25Ah, I see, and the Plief they're picking you for Queen of the
- 3:28May. And you want me to prove you didn't murder Carter. Oh no,
- 3:31mister Templar, No, No, I want you to prove I did.
- 3:51It's no use, mister Templar, I did kill Carter. Why wouldn't
- 3:53the Polief believe you? Because they couldn't find the course? There's usually one
- 3:58around after a murder, you know some I restore this one. Dealing couss
- 4:01is a rather restricted profession. Where did you kill your partner in our establishment
- 4:05on Virshire Boulevard. That's the nice place for it. When earlier this evening
- 4:11and then you found the police from the shop, No, I couldn't bear
- 4:14the sight of Carter's body. I walked over to a nearby hotel and made
- 4:17my call from there, and then I returned to the shop. I didn't
- 4:20go into the back where the shooting had taken place. Yes, I waited
- 4:25for the police. They arrived, I told them what had happened and led
- 4:29them into the back. But when you got there, the coupared with bare
- 4:31Yes, with the temper no one had heard the shot. No, you
- 4:34see, it's a business neighborhood. It was evening, understandable. May I
- 4:39ask you a questions? Of course? Are you tired of living? Right
- 4:42up? Oh? Oh? You mean? Why am I so anxious to
- 4:46have the police leaving here? Because I shot Carter in self defense. He's
- 4:49a larger man than I am. He was threatening me with physical violence.
- 4:54I acted only in self defense. I think, well, I'll drop you
- 4:57at your home and miss parts. You've got a job. Yes, you've
- 5:00got to find your partner's body. But I ask yourself where you'd go if
- 5:02you were no, No, you wouldn't be going anywhere himself. You better
- 5:08spend some time thinking about your friends. One of them might have removed the
- 5:11costs in order to shield you. Or think of your enemies. Are you
- 5:14married? Yes? I am? Well anyway, an enemy of yours might
- 5:16have moved the body to make the killing look like well like premeditated murder one
- 5:20way or another. That's the part you've quite a bit to think about,
- 5:24haven't you. Well, My living room furniture is trouting or are you I'm
- 5:49Carter? Yes? Of hops and carter pots and corner One of us is
- 5:56in a bad way. Either you're dead or I'm crazy. I can assure
- 5:59you why I'm up there very well. I'll see a psychiatrist in the morning
- 6:01to headhands sleep. What does Pot walk with you? Hey, you've been
- 6:05hurting me, haven't you. I've been following Pots. What did he want?
- 6:09Nothing? Really, he really wanted to assure me that he kills you.
- 6:13He what kills you? Shot you? To amplify an already unbelievable remark,
- 6:17he said that he must see him safe. Well eccentric anyway it mister
- 6:23kind of? The situation is rather bizarre. A man confesses to a murder,
- 6:27the police do not believe him. He comes to me and asks me
- 6:29to approve him a murderer. I leave him and find myself confronting the man
- 6:33he claims to have murdered. It doesn't make sense. Perhaps it's not intended
- 6:39to What do you mean? I suggest you go to the police, identify
- 6:43yourself to them, and ask complete protection for yourself. I don't need any
- 6:46protection. Pot wouldn't harm a fly, but you not a fly, my
- 6:49dear follow The possibility of Pots really doing me harm is something I can't take
- 6:54seriously. Why not go to the police anyway, I couldn't without exposing pots
- 6:57for ridicule, and you solstitute for your part is rather touching, especially since
- 7:01he accused you of being a thief, of fealing from the firm to be
- 7:06perfect. He that's that, and I have something to think about? Is
- 7:12something to fear? You know? Now a man has already confessed to your
- 7:16murder and you're still alive. If confession may have been moonstruck madness, it
- 7:21may have been profiting. Good night, mister Carter. Well hello, hello.
- 7:46The cars they put out nowadays have rare and wonderful gadgets attached to Pardon
- 7:51me, but I'm trading a fellow, a man named Carter. Do you
- 7:55know him? Do I know you? Or should I? What do you
- 7:58think a Carter's cabin as well? In sight? Just a moment, I
- 8:01take my eyes off the cap for a moment, and I should what's your
- 8:05name? I'm Simon. No, I only bought this car yesterday. Are
- 8:11you part of the standard of questment? No? I go with this luck
- 8:15models only. I'm so glad I said for the extras. Care what doesn't
- 8:18matter and on where we're going or what we do when we get there is
- 8:22a nice ciet. See. Hey, hey, wait a minute, that's
- 8:26the ignition key. I know you've got the key. Well may I borrow
- 8:30it? No, No, cart's cat is out of sight. So you're
- 8:35cute? This is and now, Simon, what are we going to do?
- 8:56I think? Oh, hello officer. Now this may be a residential
- 9:03neighborhood. But it is. It is, But that doesn't mean you should
- 9:07play house. Well, we weren't exactly paying house office. I were trying
- 9:13to persuade the lady to return my ignition key to me. That affect lady,
- 9:18give him back his ignition key. Oh I don't here you are.
- 9:24Thank you. Now you take that ignition key and stick it in a lot.
- 9:28That's right. Now you turn it so you're doing very nicely. Now
- 9:33you've pushed a little button over there. Oh charming. Now you shift the
- 9:39gear at the first you release the hand break. You're a bright boy.
- 9:45The next time you go out with a girl and make sure your ignition key
- 9:48isn't showing. Now step on the gas and get the heck. Got it?
- 10:05Simon? Are you angry with me for delaying me? Not? Especially?
- 10:11Where are you taking your jewelry? Oh? You really shouldn't. You
- 10:13don't know me well enough. Which jewelry or pots and cotta? You know
- 10:16the thing I should My husband was half of it. Uh Uh hot door
- 10:22cotta hot. They must have a nice assortment of stones. What makes you
- 10:26think so hot? Doesn't that in your late baby? Not in his own
- 10:31marriage. I'm not so sure that's a compliments, brute. Huh because he
- 10:35was a riot. There's a light in the back. Are you coming with
- 10:41me? No? Why not? You think you're a hobby might be there,
- 10:45I'm broody, all right, Just don't hatch anything. Oh there,
- 10:54open the door? Okay, okaymer, how right you are, miss Carter.
- 11:01What do you want? Let's go inside? I said inside, Well,
- 11:05come in. But I know you weren't expecting company, the houses,
- 11:09the net. What made you think I'd be here? I wasn't sure,
- 11:11but it was a possibility, so I came. Now that you're here,
- 11:15I'd like to take a look in that back room where the light is.
- 11:18Where the light and I'd rather suspect the vault tembler. I don't have the
- 11:22stamp. No, but I've got a feeling you're going to Let's get on
- 11:24with it, shall we. Let's both check. Wait a minute, you
- 11:31might understand, give me a chance to I don't want you to come in
- 11:35keep walking? All right? All right? But what are you idiot?
- 11:41If you think aby putting the lights out? You Claire? Where the light
- 11:48switch is near the back door? I got it? Oh, lying half
- 11:58a car the doorway and I'm a mid it's blood leaking out from under him.
- 12:09Let's take a look at the background. Uh huh yeah, back window
- 12:15leading to an alley. Than so much for that? Now? Can you
- 12:20worry about that when a man being dead? Men before? I don't care.
- 12:24The husband might. The police certainly would. Well, I gotta go.
- 12:31He's got a job notifying the police. They wouldn't like it if you
- 12:33didn't. What are you going to do? Live number A stle operator asked
- 12:39the police headquarters, tell them all me. I'm going to visit with a
- 12:43man who confessed to a murder before it was committed. Curious to see whether
- 12:46he's going to stick to that confession now that the murder is a d I
- 13:11want to see mister Pott at this a Yes, I'm peculiar. I want
- 13:15to see mister Pott is this dow? I'm sorry, but maybe you're agret
- 13:18counter good heaven, sir, you putting me aside. Tonight you win the
- 13:26badge for alertness. Now shut the door. Yes, sir, birth five,
- 13:30I refuse to not they usual, but you're young, big, and
- 13:33you look as if you've got muzzled. You let me push you as bad
- 13:37as if you were a doddering old man. Why my father was a butler
- 13:41before me, sir, and his father before him. We're accustomed to dealing
- 13:45with gentlemen. We must be quite a come down talking to me worth five.
- 13:48He's not at home? Say sure, quite, sir, mister look
- 13:52for him as though we didn't know he was out. But I assure you
- 13:54show me well he's not in the house. No, don't look those mug
- 14:15missus. Potts isn't in the house. I you knew that, sir before
- 14:18you looked. Tell me how did she feel about her house? I beg
- 14:22your father? All right? All right, you've given me the proper outraged
- 14:26response. What's your name? And Anderson make a speech? Well, my
- 14:33father or his father beforehand, and I'll bet you they own you exactly what
- 14:37cooked with the master and mister thirty you what cook? Well, mister Potts
- 14:41is a very fine man. Missus Potts is a very fine woman. And
- 14:46you take the high road and I'll take the low road. Hey, company's
- 14:50coming, I will take the low road. Butler, who am I?
- 14:54I don't know? So good? And tell the police all about me when
- 14:56they arrived, and they'll be here soon. It'll give them something to think
- 15:01about besides missus Potts and Anderson. Yes, sir, you think about something
- 15:05besides Missy's Potts too, something like murder, sir. Okay, it's only
- 15:28Simon, Hello, Simon, business as usual here at Pots and Carter.
- 15:33Yes, usual enough. I suppose with kartera lying in the morgue and my
- 15:35husband where nobody knows he's looking for him for him, then whom have they
- 15:41in mind for Carter's murdered Burglar's obvious? What happened last night? Someone was
- 15:45burgling the vall Carter supplied him. A burglar theory was a great and any
- 15:50pleasant aspect. It doesn't explain your husband's confession. Now, well, he
- 15:54was overworked, he was tired. I didn't know what he was saying.
- 15:56These are fad that maybe maybe he's lost his mind something Yeah, I like
- 16:00that, or something better. The theory doesn't explain your husband's accusations against Carter,
- 16:07accusations of fact. I don't know anything about all then why you're acting
- 16:11the car last night? I was worried about my husband, about Gotter,
- 16:15and I always wanted to meet you. Why not the kind of thing I
- 16:22can about coldly? Like that, miss discuston warmly some other time? Right
- 16:30now? What about anderthon your butt? Then? I don't trust him.
- 16:32I know it's not done this year mistrusting, but this, but I have
- 16:34a feeding he knows more than he should, more than he should. Why
- 16:38don't you find out by discussing things with him warmly? I'm not so sure
- 16:45I like that. I'm not making friends today, just influencing people. I
- 16:49can't imagine what anison would I wouldn't know. Simulate your imagination by going out
- 16:53of the house now and working on him. You really think it's important,
- 16:56very important? I run along all right, but sure I'll lock up you
- 17:00go on the lady, No be at home starting up the turn. I
- 17:06mean you don't have to have a sin. Yeah there's the back door,
- 17:21m h locked and now the front door knocked? No yees? Now yeah,
- 17:34got your heap over there, Yeah, yest to take a care.
- 17:37I like my heap. Now, don't look now, but some little characters
- 17:41let the air out a couple of your tires. But then suppose we go
- 17:45for a ride in your cat thirty nine tall tower drive. Okay, hey,
- 17:52did you happen to notice the happy thanks to who deflated my tires?
- 17:56Sure? I noticed it? Why not? I'm under Oh well, why
- 18:00didn't you stop her? Mister? I'm a married man. That means I'm
- 18:04cautious for all I knew. Maybe you're the kind of fella likes your girl
- 18:07of the flator's tires for him. It depends on the circumstances. Caddy,
- 18:12not too early in the morning. Okay, next time, I'll know.
- 18:15You don't like a girl that deflates your tires for you in the morning.
- 18:18You don't think it's fun, No, I think it's murdered thirty nine felt
- 18:36car driver man? Okay, fall over here? Okay, I stop.
- 18:41Well, I should wait for him. We'll both wait for somebody to get
- 18:45to the hunt. No, for someone to leave it. Hey, hey
- 18:48miss it. Yeah, there's a guy leaving the house now getting into a
- 18:51car. Good and follow the car. Okay, too close? Huh?
- 18:55Not too close, there goes, Well, we go too Okay, going
- 19:00on a long trip, I ain't got too much gas in the tank.
- 19:03He's going on a very long trip, and yet I don't think he's going
- 19:07far. And space is relative, Kebby. Remember what Hamlet's been Well,
- 19:11I wasn't around at the time. I could be bounded by a nutshell.
- 19:15Yet count myself king of incident. Oh yeah, yeah, I remember it
- 19:18now? Were it not that I have a nice guy Hamlet? I want?
- 19:23I wonder does Anderson have that dream getting dark? I don't like these
- 19:40hills when it starts getting dark. Hey, a guy would trail and to
- 19:45turn off the road, drivate, driveing, pull up to it and start.
- 19:48Okay, the house is beyond the bend, quite near the road,
- 19:53Kebby. Yeah, I'm leaving you. Look, I want you to drive
- 19:57back to town since you hit a place with a phone called the police.
- 20:02Yeah, and tell him what to warm itself for a murderer. They can
- 20:06pick the murderer up here. Okay, pal don't love them? Where?
- 20:17Oh hello Anderson, fancy finding me here? Mister temper? Whatever would your
- 20:23grandfather say? What do you want? I'm admiring the country home of the
- 20:27pot. By the way, where is mister Pott? I don't know who's
- 20:32had a big friend. Stay away from that door, mansense. It looks
- 20:33like a charming door work too, mister Pott tied and gagged. I told
- 20:40you I don't accept it vice graciously, nor do I care for larger miss
- 20:45lantern jaws. But landon jaws are handy to hit. Now for you,
- 20:49mister Pott, or get the gag out of your mouth. You be better,
- 20:56don't rush it your hands nice time? Look out behind? Oh,
- 21:07hello Claire, Hello, so glad you propped in? You are? Yes?
- 21:12Remember I warned you about your butler. It was he who brought your
- 21:15husband here and tied him up. That's interesting. You should ask me why
- 21:21I suspected him. All right, I'll tell you. When I visited your
- 21:25house and met Anderson for the first time, we had a little chat in
- 21:29the course of which he remarked that I knew you weren't in the house before
- 21:32I searched him. Why because how did he know I'd seen you outside the
- 21:37house? And unless let me help you, do you feed mister standing?
- 21:41I will help restore the circular what so formal? Mister Kemper unless Claire,
- 21:48you told him. Why should I told him that? Obviously, because you
- 21:52and he were in on this little plot together to kill Carter and frame your
- 21:56husband for the murder, that she would inherit the business and the butler.
- 22:02You're shot. Timon was fantastically wrong, you're implying, Alison Kilcatta. No,
- 22:07no, He'll go to the gas chamberge excessively, do you Soca was
- 22:12shot from the back room. I was out front with you. You were
- 22:15at the front door. That's true. Carda was shot as we as he
- 22:18was going into the back room. His back therefore was two eyes. And
- 22:22yet if you remember he was shot in the back. Afterwards we remarked how
- 22:26he lay face uper with the blood coming out from underneath him, and a
- 22:30fool are you? Oh, dear dear, I was wondering how long it
- 22:34would be before you produced the pit. Mister Potts. Can you stand alone?
- 22:38I can't. I'm falling. If you, thank you, that's a
- 22:48good deal better. The police will be here shortly and that will be that
- 22:52relaxed. You've fallen to rise again. But your wife, I'm afraid,
- 22:57has deflated their last time. Now Here you are mister Potts in good health.
- 23:17Mister Templar, how could I have killed Carter and not killed him?
- 23:21Simplicity itself. Mister Potts, your gun had been carefully loaded with blanks.
- 23:25Carter pretended to be dead, But why should he have done that. Your
- 23:27wife must have persuaded him that by doing that he would escape going to jailor
- 23:30professed she'd have a hold over you. He's not a very nice woman,
- 23:34is she. No, with Carter murdered, she was preparing to have you
- 23:38disappear permanently. It would seem to the police that you've killed Carter and fled
- 23:42to the country. I can't thank you. Don't bother it with one but
- 23:47in the future, mister Potts, before you confessed to murdering anyone, he's
- 23:49sure you murder him. You have been listening to another adventure of the Saints,
- 24:06the robin Hood of modern crime, And now here is our star vincent
- 24:08pride. Ladies and gentlemen. Freedom is everybody's job. The Bill of Rights
- 24:14established our freedom and protects it. But freedom demands that each of us carry
- 24:18out our duties as a citizens, to vote in an informed way so that

- 24:26take an active interest in public issues. Remember, by making our form of
- 24:30government work better here, we strengthen democracy everywhere. Missus Linton Price inviting you

- 25:18all you Saint fans will be glad to know that the Saint's comic book
- 25:22are unclayed with all you sad You're announcer Merril Rudd is a mutual broadcasting system.
- 25:37Welcome back. I love that opening scene with the Saint complaining about the
- 25:41soup in the hands of a not as talented actor really could come off in
- 25:51a negative way, but it really just it feels good the way that it's
- 25:56worked in and pretty natural and really does up the Saint's character and give him
- 26:02momentum going into the story itself. And I enjoyed this thoroughly. Even though
- 26:06I figured the wife to be the murderer pretty early on, her entry into
- 26:12the shop was just way too suspicious for me. Well, that will actually
- 26:18do it for today. We'll be back tomorrow with Easy Money, and then
- 26:22join us back here next Monday for another episode of The Saint. In the
