Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Trust Me When I Say Good Things Take Time
Transcript
- 0:19Speaker 1: What's up, Emily. Here you are listening to five Minute
- 0:22Speaker 1: Friday from Hurdle. What an unbelievable week this has been.
- 0:27Speaker 1: I am feeling gosh, so lucky. I feel so lucky.
- 0:32Speaker 1: I feel grateful and so appreciative of everyone that has
- 0:38Speaker 1: reached out.
- 0:39Speaker 2: I'm feeling really excited for this next chapter.
- 0:41Speaker 1: And before I get into five Minute Friday to day,
- 0:44Speaker 1: I do want to explain what will be different on
- 0:48Speaker 1: the show so that you can have a full understanding
- 0:51Speaker 1: as a listener.
- 0:52Speaker 2: So nothing's changing here.
- 0:53Speaker 1: You're still getting content wise the same episodes on Tuesdays
- 0:57Speaker 1: and Fridays. What is changing is just the way that
- 1:00Speaker 1: the ads sound on your side, so you'll hear different ads.
- 1:04Speaker 1: Not all of them are going to be read by me,
- 1:06Speaker 1: and transparently. It's something that I really thought long and
- 1:09Speaker 1: hard about. It's a big reason why I waited for
- 1:12Speaker 1: such a long time to join a network, But when
- 1:16Speaker 1: this opportunity came to me, it felt really right for me,
- 1:20Speaker 1: and so I hope that as listeners you can have
- 1:23Speaker 1: compassion for the fact that, yes, the ads might sound different.
- 1:26Speaker 1: But I want you to know that I care so
- 1:28Speaker 1: much about you, and I care so much about giving
- 1:32Speaker 1: you content that matters, and I realized that I was
- 1:35Speaker 1: just so worried about upsetting the listeners, because the listeners
- 1:39Speaker 1: are my why there, You guys, are why I keep
- 1:42Speaker 1: showing up week after week without you.
- 1:44Speaker 2: Hurdle wanting to be a thing.
- 1:45Speaker 1: And what I came to realize is that I listened
- 1:48Speaker 1: to so many shows where this is a thing, the
- 1:52Speaker 1: ads are thing, and I just need to evolve and
- 1:56Speaker 1: know that as hurdlers, you will understand.
- 2:00Speaker 2: So thank you for understanding.
- 2:02Speaker 1: I've learned a lot in the past almost eight years
- 2:06Speaker 1: of podcasting, and this week the most resounding lesson is
- 2:11Speaker 1: that good things take time. I've been podcasting for eight
- 2:15Speaker 1: years and we are so inundated in this.
- 2:20Speaker 2: Highlight real world that we live in.
- 2:23Speaker 1: To see people where it looks like an overnight success.
- 2:26Speaker 1: Someone starts creating content on a Tuesday and by the
- 2:29Speaker 1: following Tuesday they have something like fifty one hundred thousand followers.
- 2:34Speaker 1: Everyone wants instant gratification. I won't sit here and say
- 2:37Speaker 1: that I didn't want instant gratification for a really long time.
- 2:41Speaker 1: That hasn't been my experience. Podcasting has just been one
- 2:45Speaker 1: small win after the next, and transparently. For a long
- 2:51Speaker 1: time in there, I felt like I was just getting
- 2:54Speaker 1: slammed with no but I kept trying things. I kept
- 2:58Speaker 1: failing forward. If you want to put in air quotes,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I knew that where there's a why, there is a way,
- 3:05Speaker 1: And my why has always been to help women, specifically
- 3:10Speaker 1: on their journeys to live healthier, happier, more motivated lives.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And over the course of the last eight years, I've
- 3:16Speaker 1: tried so many things. When I was determined to have
- 3:20Speaker 1: my own studio space, I sold a sponsorship to the
- 3:23Speaker 1: studio space so that I could afford to move into
- 3:26Speaker 1: a bigger apartment. I watched hours of videos on how
- 3:29Speaker 1: to do keynotes. I have studied for months on end
- 3:33Speaker 1: to become a certified professional coach, which we've talked about
- 3:36Speaker 1: on the show. You can like into it like coach,
- 3:38Speaker 1: because I wanted to be able to have smarter conversations
- 3:41Speaker 1: with my guests as they opened up to me and
- 3:43Speaker 1: got comfortable with me. I have traveled the world hosting
- 3:47Speaker 1: live shows and workshops, and I have been told so
- 3:51Speaker 1: many times that it's just not yet from speaking agents,
- 3:55Speaker 1: from managers, people that look at one metric like social media,
- 4:00Speaker 1: followers and they say, m I just don't think now
- 4:03Speaker 1: is the right time. But when I tell you that,
- 4:05Speaker 1: there is so much power and persistence. I knew and
- 4:09Speaker 1: still firmly believe that I have something to offer and
- 4:14Speaker 1: it was just a matter of time until the right
- 4:16Speaker 1: people came to the table. And this isn't the first
- 4:19Speaker 1: time that someone's come to the table and said, we
- 4:21Speaker 1: see what you have to offer. I will say that,
- 4:23Speaker 1: but it's the first time that it just felt so
- 4:26Speaker 1: aligned with what it is that I want to become,
- 4:30Speaker 1: who I am becoming, and where it is that I
- 4:32Speaker 1: want to go. I want to have conversations within the
- 4:35Speaker 1: woman's sports space. I want to sit at the table
- 4:39Speaker 1: and in rooms with so many of the women that
- 4:42Speaker 1: are already doing unbelievable work on behalf of this network.
- 4:46Speaker 1: At the beginning of this year, one of my good
- 4:48Speaker 1: friends reminded me of this. Honestly, I was having a
- 4:51Speaker 1: really hard time and her and I were out for
- 4:53Speaker 1: a walk and I said to her, I'm not sure
- 4:55Speaker 1: if I can podcast moving forward for much longer, Like
- 5:00Speaker 1: I didn't know if I was going to be able
- 5:02Speaker 1: to make it happen. And as we were standing in
- 5:05Speaker 1: the room, at this celebration on Tuesday night. She looked
- 5:08Speaker 1: at me and she said, you kept going, and that
- 5:11Speaker 1: is some inspiring stuff. And she's right, And I'm proud
- 5:15Speaker 1: of myself that I kept going. And I'm proud of
- 5:17Speaker 1: myself that I took those nose as information, not as Bible.
- 5:22Speaker 1: I took the nose that came my way as this
- 5:25Speaker 1: isn't the right opportunity for you, So now it's your
- 5:27Speaker 1: opportunity to seek out something else. There is so much
- 5:32Speaker 1: power in patience, and it's not an easy thing to exercise,
- 5:37Speaker 1: but that's when we get to lean into our people.
- 5:39Speaker 1: That's when we get to seek out support from the
- 5:41Speaker 1: people that care about us and our hearts and who
- 5:44Speaker 1: it is that we are and who it is that
- 5:47Speaker 1: we want to become. I'm so grateful for the family
- 5:50Speaker 1: and the friends and the peers and the mentors that
- 5:53Speaker 1: have guided me up until this point, and I firmly
- 5:57Speaker 1: believe that I'm still just getting started. For anyone who
- 6:01Speaker 1: feels like they're often in between a rock and a
- 6:03Speaker 1: hard place, I get it.
- 6:04Speaker 2: I felt like that.
- 6:05Speaker 1: For so many moments, during so many days over the
- 6:10Speaker 1: last eight years. For every whin that you do see
- 6:14Speaker 1: on social There are probably three to four moments that
- 6:18Speaker 1: feel like a loss, But I recognize now that the
- 6:22Speaker 1: almost eight years has taken for me to get to
- 6:25Speaker 1: this step in this journey, they weren't a delay, they
- 6:31Speaker 1: were a development period. I know that what I'm doing
- 6:34Speaker 1: now is better because I took that time to sort
- 6:38Speaker 1: myself out, to sort my business out, and to really
- 6:41Speaker 1: get firm on who it is that I am and
- 6:43Speaker 1: where it is that I want to go. Rejection is redirection,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and your experience is your leverage.
- 6:50Speaker 2: The things that I know now that I can bring to.
- 6:52Speaker 1: The table I didn't have this knowledge seven years ago.
- 6:56Speaker 1: It is up to you to pick yourself up when
- 6:58Speaker 1: it feels hard, and trust me, it's going to feel hard,
- 7:02Speaker 1: But that adversity, those hurdles are what help you become
- 7:06Speaker 1: the person who you are supposed to be. My thought
- 7:10Speaker 1: problem for you this week, what is something that you
- 7:13Speaker 1: are consciously being patient on right now? What is something
- 7:17Speaker 1: that you are being patient on right now? And what
- 7:20Speaker 1: is your ultimate goal in exercising that patience? What is
- 7:24Speaker 1: something you're being patient about right now and what is
- 7:27Speaker 1: your ultimate goal by exercising that patience? And now a
- 7:33Speaker 1: listener question Hey, Emily Alexander, here quick question for you
- 7:37Speaker 1: when it comes to sneakers. Do you track your mileage
- 7:41Speaker 1: on your sneakers and how do you know when to
- 7:44Speaker 1: rotate or retire them. I've always done it based on feel,
- 7:47Speaker 1: but I feel like there's a firm number for this.
- 7:49Speaker 1: Thanks so much and really excited for this new chapter
- 7:52Speaker 1: of a hurdle. Alex all right, there are a few
- 7:55Speaker 1: like buy feel ways that you can know when it's
- 7:58Speaker 1: time to retire your sneak within the sneaker itself. If
- 8:01Speaker 1: the cushioning starts to feel flat, if the shoe is
- 8:04Speaker 1: overly flexible, if the mid.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Soul feels tough.
- 8:07Speaker 1: These are signature signs that's a shoe itself is starting
- 8:10Speaker 1: to really experience some wear in tear. You'll also be
- 8:14Speaker 1: able to see some physical wear and tear if you
- 8:17Speaker 1: look at perhaps the bottom the sole of your shoe
- 8:21Speaker 1: from a body POV. If your feet or your joints
- 8:24Speaker 1: are hurting more than normal, that is a big sign
- 8:27Speaker 1: that something is up there now. In terms of specific numbers,
- 8:32Speaker 1: it's a really wide range that people offer up for
- 8:34Speaker 1: running shoes. Specifically, they say that the general mileage guideline
- 8:38Speaker 1: is to replace them every three to five hundred miles.
- 8:41Speaker 1: But this really depends on things like your gate, how
- 8:44Speaker 1: hard are you hitting the ground, what surfaces are you
- 8:47Speaker 1: running on? All of that comes into play. I'm saying
- 8:51Speaker 1: I'll running a pair of sneakers for anywhere from like
- 8:54Speaker 1: five to seven months, and over that time, if I'm
- 8:56Speaker 1: running around twenty to thirty miles a week, I'm definitely
- 9:00Speaker 1: giving that sneaker a good time before I'm ready to
- 9:03Speaker 1: retire it. When it comes to training sneakers, that is
- 9:06Speaker 1: something that you can typically keep a lot longer, especially
- 9:09Speaker 1: if you're only wearing them inside of the gym, not
- 9:11Speaker 1: doing your commute to and from. So I've had a
- 9:14Speaker 1: pair of Nike Free met Cons, which is my go
- 9:16Speaker 1: to strength training sneaker gosh for at least a year
- 9:20Speaker 1: and a half, and with those, I really do look
- 9:23Speaker 1: for physical signs of wear. I'm taking a look not
- 9:26Speaker 1: only at the soul, but then also on the insul,
- 9:28Speaker 1: looking at the toe box and the heel. And remember,
- 9:32Speaker 1: when you look good, you feel good, and feeling good
- 9:34Speaker 1: is such an integral part to keeping that workout motivation going.
- 9:38Speaker 2: So sometimes you just got to treat yourself.
- 9:42Speaker 1: Last thing if you have any doubts on whether or
- 9:44Speaker 1: not the sneaker is still good, that's usually your indicator
- 9:48Speaker 1: that it's time to switch things up. Make sure you're
- 9:50Speaker 1: following along with hurdle over on social It's at Hurdle podcast,
