Latest / Traveler’s Tales / Bible Stories You Should Know: Elijah on Mount Carmel
Transcript
- 0:00There are places in this world where history feels heavy, places where the wind seems to
- 0:19whisper the stories of another age.
- 0:22One of those places rises above the Mediterranean coastline in northern Israel, a rugged mountain
- 0:27ridge called Mount Carmel.
- 0:30It was there that one lonely prophet stood against a nation that had forgotten God.
- 0:37Welcome to another edition of Traveler's Tales, produced by Enjoying the Journey.
- 0:41I'm your host, Greg Dowdy.
- 0:43On Traveler's Tales, we often journey back into the world of the Bible and take a closer
- 0:48look at the places, people, and moments that reveal the truth of God's Word.
- 0:54A special thanks to John Buckner, whose research and insight continue to help bring these biblical
- 1:01settings and stories to life for us.
- 1:05Today we journey to one of the most dramatic scenes in all of Scripture, a place where
- 1:11fire fell from heaven, where false religion was exposed, a place where God reminded His
- 1:18people that He alone is worthy of worship.
- 1:22Our story comes from 1 Kings chapter 18.
- 1:26The nation of Israel was in spiritual collapse.
- 1:30King Ahab and Queen Jezebel had led the people deep into idolatry.
- 1:35Altars to Baal covered the land.
- 1:37The worship of the true God had been neglected, sin had become normal, and truth had become
- 1:44unpopular.
- 1:45And into that dark hour stepped a prophet named Elijah.
- 1:50Elijah issued an astonishing challenge.
- 1:53He called for all Israel to gather on Mount Carmel along with the 450 prophets of Baal.
- 1:59There, on the mountain, the issue would finally be settled.
- 2:03The prophet stood before the people and asked one of the great questions of the Bible.
- 2:08How long halt ye between two opinions?
- 2:12If the Lord be God, follow Him.
- 2:14But if Baal, then follow him.
- 2:17What a question!
- 2:19The problem in Israel was not atheism.
- 2:22They still wanted religion.
- 2:23They simply wanted a religion that allowed them to worship God while also holding onto
- 2:29their idols.
- 2:30But God has never accepted divided hearts.
- 2:34And friend, the same is true today.
- 2:37God is not looking for partial devotion.
- 2:40He is worthy of complete surrender.
- 2:44The challenge was simple.
- 2:46Each side would prepare a sacrifice, but no fire would be placed beneath it.
- 2:51The God who answered by fire would prove Himself to be the true God.
- 2:56The prophets of Baal went first.
- 2:58Hour after hour they cried out.
- 3:01They leaped upon the altar.
- 3:02They shouted.
- 3:03They pleaded.
- 3:05Scripture even says they cut themselves with knives until the blood flowed.
- 3:10It was an exhausting display of empty religion.
- 3:14But still, nothing happened.
- 3:17No voice, no fire, no answer.
- 3:21Then Elijah stepped forward.
- 3:24On top of Mount Carmel stood an old altar of the Lord that had been broken down and
- 3:29neglected.
- 3:30The Bible says Elijah repaired it stone by stone.
- 3:35What a picture that is!
- 3:38Before the fire could fall, the altar had to be restored.
- 3:43And perhaps that is where some of us are today.
- 3:46The altar of prayer has been neglected.
- 3:49The altar of worship has been broken down.
- 3:52The altar of fellowship with God has been abandoned beneath the rubble of busy lives
- 3:58and divided hearts.
- 4:00Yet, thank God, what has been broken can still be rebuilt.
- 4:06Elijah prepared the sacrifice and then did something shocking.
- 4:10During a severe drought, he commanded that water be poured over the altar again and again
- 4:16until everything was drenched.
- 4:19Why?
- 4:20Because Elijah wanted everyone to know that when the fire fell, it could only be explained
- 4:25by the power of God.
- 4:27Then the prophet prayed one of the simplest prayers in Scripture.
- 4:31No screaming, no theatrics, no performance.
- 4:36Just simple faith in a mighty God.
- 4:40And suddenly, fire fell from heaven.
- 4:43The flames consumed the sacrifice, the wood, the stones, the dust, and even the water in
- 4:50the trench around the altar.
- 4:52Can you imagine standing there that day?
- 4:55The heat, the shock, the silence that must have swept across the mountain?
- 5:01And when the people saw it, they fell on their faces and cried,
- 5:05The Lord, He is the God!
- 5:07The Lord, He is the God!
- 5:10Mount Carmel became a monument to the power of God and the folly of idols.
- 5:16Interestingly, the mountain continued to hold significance throughout history.
- 5:21Even centuries later, during the First Jewish War, the Roman general Vespasian reportedly
- 5:26visited Mount Carmel seeking divine guidance before eventually becoming emperor of Rome.
- 5:33Ancient writers mentioned the mountain as a sacred place long remembered for its connection
- 5:39to prophecy and worship.
- 5:41But the greatest lesson of Carmel is not about Roman history or even dramatic miracles.
- 5:47It is about the God who answers by fire.
- 5:51Elijah was not trusting in emotion, popularity, or human ability.
- 5:58He simply trusted in the one and true living God.
- 6:02Old Scripture reminds us in the New Testament that Elijah was a man subject to like passions
- 6:08as we are.
- 6:10In other words, he was an ordinary man who believed in an extraordinary God.
- 6:16And that means the God of Carmel is still the same today.
- 6:22He still answers prayer.
- 6:24He still reveals himself.
- 6:26He still calls wandering hearts back home.
- 6:30Mount Carmel also reminds us that every person must eventually choose whom they will serve.
- 6:36Neutral ground does not exist forever.
- 6:39How long haunt ye between two opinions?
- 6:42That question echoes across the centuries.
- 6:45Will we trust the gods of this world, pleasure, success, self, materialism?
- 6:52Or will we trust the God of Elijah?
- 6:56Because in the end, only one God answers by fire.
- 7:02Thank you for joining me on today's journey.
- 7:04Stories like this remind us that the God who worked in ages past is still at work today.
- 7:11He desires to use our lives to shine the light of the gospel in this generation.
