- 0:15SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 0:22SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 0:24SPEAKER_02: Dream, create, connect, just live it.
- 0:28SPEAKER_01: Welcome to another episode of the Life and How to Live It podcast with me, Dr.
- 0:33SPEAKER_01: Rocco.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: In today's episode, we will be talking about one of my favorite things, travel.
- 0:40SPEAKER_01: For me, I cannot imagine a life without travel.
- 0:43SPEAKER_01: In episode two of season one, I talked about my three components of a full life.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: They were connection, creativity, and experience.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: For me, travel contains all three of these components.
- 0:58SPEAKER_01: I am joined today by my co-host Pete, who loves travel as much as I do.
- 1:03SPEAKER_01: Pete, welcome back to the show.
- 1:05SPEAKER_01: Rock, thanks for having me.
- 1:07SPEAKER_01: It's great to see you.
- 1:08SPEAKER_00: Oh, I love this topic.
- 1:10SPEAKER_01: Yes, I know you do.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: And when, you know, when I was thinking about this topic, I was thinking how this would be a really interesting conversation because, you know, you and I have traveled a lot.
- 1:23SPEAKER_01: Sometimes we've traveled together, most of the time not.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: And we travel very differently.
- 1:28SPEAKER_01: And I think that there's something there for you know the listeners to kind of learn, you know, a little bit from you, a little bit from me.
- 1:36SPEAKER_01: Maybe your style is more their style.
- 1:38SPEAKER_01: Maybe the way I do it is what they would enjoy.
- 1:41SPEAKER_01: So what is it, Pete, that you love about travel?
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: You know, if if I had to rank it in a list right off the bat, I work a lot, I do a lot with family.
- 1:55SPEAKER_00: I mean, Rock, do you know anyone busier than me?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I do not.
- 1:59SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:00SPEAKER_01: I do not.
- 2:01SPEAKER_00: And when I have a trip or two or three on the calendar, it's something that I always have to look forward to.
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: It is a a finish line for me to get through the busyness, the craziness, the and uh it's all good, but it's just I know I have that in front of me.
- 2:20SPEAKER_00: So first and foremost, I use that as as a a point of I've made it.
- 2:25SPEAKER_00: I don't take days off at work, you know.
- 2:28SPEAKER_00: I I think I've you know talked about in an earlier podcast.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: I love work.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: I love going to work, I love being there, but I also like knowing that you know it's not a Friday off here, it's not a Tuesday off here, it's I've got a trip planned, and it's it it ha gives me such great uh anticipation for that.
- 2:48SPEAKER_00: So I'd say that's number one, but I'm gonna go number two.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: Another thing that I mentioned early on in a podcast was I love m meeting new people.
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: And as we we go through this podcast and we talk about our our our styles, our places we love to go, you will see a really distinct uh pattern with mine is I love going where there are a lot of people, you know.
- 3:12SPEAKER_00: And it's funny because you'll talk to people, oh, I love to go to you know, the a a cabin in the woods, I love to hike by myself, and you know, all things like all those are great, and I love those too.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: But my favorite is when I'm around just so many people that I usually I don't know.
- 3:29SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean that is you.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: That is you, I know you well, and it's hard to travel with you because you can't walk one block without you saying hello to somebody.
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I'm like, did you know that guy?
- 3:41SPEAKER_01: No, I don't never met him in my life.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: So isn't that true though?
- 3:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, it's very true.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: Absolutely love it, and you know, sometimes they're not reciprocal, they're not thinking, you know, I'm saying hi to this guy, but uh but I'm still gonna do it, you know.
- 4:00SPEAKER_00: Yes, you're you're undaunted, absolutely.
- 4:02SPEAKER_00: You know, really real quick, one of my favorite things, we went to um uh well, we go to New York City all the time, and we went to a small diner a couple years ago, and um me and my wife just sat with these two local people.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: You know, I asked if when the seat was taken, they were talking, they were you know elderly uh people, and I was like, Oh, and you mind if we join you?
- 4:23SPEAKER_00: And they're like, No, go ahead.
- 4:25SPEAKER_00: And we had the greatest hour and a half conversation, you know, and and things like that.
- 4:31SPEAKER_00: I don't recommend that for everyone, but for me right, for me, that's that's please don't try this at home, right?
- 4:38SPEAKER_01: Yes, so true.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: So, okay, so you love the like that feeling of anticipation.
- 4:46SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna I have a trip coming up.
- 4:48SPEAKER_01: You love the connecting with people.
- 4:50SPEAKER_01: Anything else?
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: I love learning new things, you know.
- 4:54SPEAKER_00: I love you know me, I love doing research.
- 4:57SPEAKER_00: I love knowing that even if it's some place that I've gone, you know, five, ten, fifteen times, the places I go, the places we go are such that it could be different every single time, right?
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: So one of the um my goals when we go to and I'll I'll you know New York City is we have to do something different every single trip.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: And when I say we, I'm I'm speaking for myself and my wife.
- 5:25SPEAKER_00: But uh you know how many times we're in we're from the area, you know, and but it's still easy to research and find something that is new.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: It could be a restaurant, it could be a club, it could be anything, but just find something new so I gain a new experience.
- 5:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, speaking of that, you you turned me on to something in New York that I had never known, you know, like as you kind of mentioned, you know, we grew up in the New York City suburbs and have been going to the city for our you know our whole lives.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: Um but there was this recommendation that you made about the uh New York City ferries.
- 6:06SPEAKER_03: Oh remember that?
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Yeah, oh absolutely.
- 6:09SPEAKER_00: I always lead with that with people because a lot of people didn't know it existed.
- 6:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah, what's it called?
- 6:14SPEAKER_00: NYC Ferry.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: NYC Ferry.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: And as a commuter ferry, but it you know, it's it it's great for convenience, but it's also great for sightseeing and and and seeing parts that you wouldn't see.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: I I was so glad when you said you did it because I think no one else has done it, uh, even though I suggest it all the time.
- 6:34SPEAKER_01: Well, hopefully one of our listeners will.
- 6:36SPEAKER_01: When you go to New York, look for the NYC ferry.
- 6:40unknown: Right.
- 6:41SPEAKER_01: It is a great way to take a boat ride.
- 6:44unknown: Right.
- 6:45SPEAKER_01: Very inexpensive.
- 6:47SPEAKER_01: You go all up and down the East River, and it's also convenient.
- 6:51SPEAKER_01: You know, it'll take you from like the what, like 96th Street or something, down all the way to the financial district.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: And you zigzag across the East River, you know, Queens, Brooklyn, and you you know, you see all the sites, at least on in that part of the city.
- 7:09SPEAKER_01: Um uh my wife Susan and I did that, and it was fantastic on a summer evening.
- 7:16SPEAKER_01: So that's a great discovery that you know you made that that we have uh used.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 7:22SPEAKER_01: So so what are what are some of your favorite places that you've been?
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: You uh you and Michelle.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, me and Michelle, okay, because I I I do have to say I you know previous career I traveled all the time.
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: I traveled all the time to um major league baseball parks and and that for work.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: But me and Michelle, there's three that we go that we go I want to say almost every year, if not sometimes twice a year.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Oh, or if you're talking New York City, four times a year.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: So our three top ones are um New York City, uh Las Vegas, which is is unique, and then Disney World.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: We're really big Disney fans.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: And and uh yeah, and it's and it's funny because you know there are people who travel and they love all uh we'll go anywhere, you know, especially if there's a beach or water or anything like that.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: We will definitely be going.
- 8:14SPEAKER_00: But um it's like going to a restaurant and ordering the same thing because you know you love it.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Um that's not for everybody, but it is for us, and we we choose places that have enough to do so that you're not doing the same thing all the time.
- 8:28SPEAKER_01: So those are so you have the same rule, like you said, for New York City, you always have to do something new.
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Do you have the same rule for Vegas?
- 8:36SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:37SPEAKER_00: And and you gotta remember, you know, I'm not the biggest, you know, what Vegas is famous for, that's usually not me.
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: What I'm for is I I love the shows.
- 8:47SPEAKER_00: I love being at whatever hour of the day and and and seeing people seeing activity.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: I just like watching, you know, as everything happens.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: We always do a different show, we always do different restaurants.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: We'll always have our our our favorites that we'll go to, but we'll always try something different.
- 9:04SPEAKER_00: And if you you notice with those places, it it's never ending.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: You've been all of them, you know that.
- 9:10SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: There's always something to do, there's always some entertainment, energy, energy, energy, yeah, for sure.
- 9:18SPEAKER_01: For sure.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: So, um, you know, for me, you know, the I mentioned at the top that, you know, travel is a way to connect, you know, and like connection is like one of those really important things for me.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: I um I would say I learned about this, you know, growing up because you know, we used to go to Italy when I was a kid, you know, and we started when I was like six and went, you know, several times during my young years, like adolescence and stuff.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: And what I learned, you know, because we were not tourists when we went to Italy, we were like going to visit relatives in a little like a small town.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: And I I got to appreciate this idea of just like connecting with a culture, you know, it's like it was my culture, yes, but you know, Italian American culture is a little different from Italy, like real, like the Italians.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: And so I got that sort of like love for connecting with the local people and what they do.
- 10:17SPEAKER_01: Um, I had a really um kind of pivotal experience in when I was about 20 or 21.
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: I backpacked with uh uh a friend of mine around Brazil, right?
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: And um, that was uh really something.
- 10:33SPEAKER_01: I mean, that was like bare bones.
- 10:35SPEAKER_01: You know, we were you know backpacking, we had very little, we brought very little money.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: My friend, who you know, I will not name his name on the show, but you know, he he's an adventurous person who was pretty fluent in Portuguese, and so you know, he found us some crazy places to stay.
- 10:56SPEAKER_01: Like we had uh, you know, hammocks that we would sleep in, and and wow, we would hang up a hammock, and for about, I don't know, four nights we slept in someone's chicken coop.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Oh my god.
- 11:08SPEAKER_01: On our hammocks, you know, and um, and that was another part of that sort of like growth of this idea, like travel is a way to connect with another culture with other people and what they do and stuff like that.
- 11:24SPEAKER_01: And and so that's that's one of the things I'm always seeking when I travel is like a connection with another culture.
- 11:30SPEAKER_01: So I like to travel internationally, although I've traveled all over this country and it and it's amazing.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: You know, our country is amazing.
- 11:40SPEAKER_01: You know, the other you know, thing like the creativity side of it is you know, I'm usually the one who plans trips for for my family, and I love to plan trips because it's part of my creative outlet, you know.
- 11:53SPEAKER_01: I I put a lot of uh time into figuring out where to go, you know, what to do.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: And you know, some way sometimes I'm I'm mapping it out like you know, hour by hour.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I've joked saying that, you know, it's like I live the trip twice, you know, I live it when I plan it and then when I live when I actually do it.
- 12:15SPEAKER_01: I would not advise planning your trip that much, because you know, and I'll say that will be one of my tips at the end is you know, don't overplan your trip.
- 12:24SPEAKER_01: But um, but part of like what I like to do is create a structure for the trip, uh like a skeleton for the trip.
- 12:31SPEAKER_01: And that's that's part of my creative outlet.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: And then experience, you know, it's like I have had like a treasure trove of experiences with my travel over the years, you know.
- 12:43SPEAKER_01: I I backpacked around Brazil, as I said, you know.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: I I've I've walked on the Great Wall of China, I've been to the Grand Bazaar in Istanbul, you know.
- 12:54SPEAKER_01: I've been to, you know, just recently I was on the cliffs of Moher in Ireland.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: I mean, this is you know, it's like those experiences to me are worth any money, they're worth everything, you know.
- 13:08SPEAKER_01: It's like they're they're not only memories, but they sort of they like kind of make me who I am.
- 13:14SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 13:15SPEAKER_01: And so so that's you know, that's what I love about travel.
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: That's amazing.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 13:22SPEAKER_00: I mean, to to to think just the experience is I mean, I as you're speaking and saying all this, I'm picturing it, you know, and I I I'm looking at the the the beauty of the colors and the terrain and the it's just amazing.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And look, I mean, uh when you did the the backpack in Brazil, that was many years ago, right?
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's still such a strong memory for you.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Oh, yeah, it was a very formative memory, you know, being there and doing all of that, you know, and and so you know, we one of the things I think we should mention is there's a lot of kinds of travel.
- 14:00SPEAKER_01: You know, we've mentioned backpacking, we've you know, there's backpacking trips, there's um romantic getaways, there's um, you know, there's like luxury travel, which is something I, you know, neither one of us do very much.
- 14:16SPEAKER_01: I don't do love, you know, every now and then I'll take I'll I'll splurge on on a hotel or something just for the luxury, but it's that's a kind of travel.
- 14:26SPEAKER_01: There's um hobby travel, like the baseball trips that that you and Tim and I do, you know, where we go see a city and see a ball game, you know.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: There's so many ways to travel.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:40SPEAKER_00: And and that's one of my favorite is when we do that.
- 14:43SPEAKER_00: You know, when we do our trips, right?
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we're three people in three different locations, and we always meet and it's for a common love of baseball, you know, and and and the city is our backdrop, you know, wherever we go.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: The restaurants there are our backdrop, but it's getting us together.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Remember for a time it was once a year, you know, we're so so busy, large families, everything.
- 15:10SPEAKER_00: But we knew for once a year, again, you know, it's something to look forward to that we get to go and sit through seven innings because some people can't make it through nine.
- 15:22SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: But we always catch the end of the game somewhere, so that's usually true on a radio or or the TV back at the hotel because we had enough time.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: So, yeah, you know, it's like I I was flying back from Ireland recently, and I sat next to this guy, and we we were talking, and you know, he goes to Ireland and uh you know the British Isles and with his friends and they golf, you know.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: You know, that's like this is there's a lot of ways to travel, there's no right way, it's just your way, whatever you like.
- 15:59SPEAKER_01: But but Pete, do you know what is the most popular country to visit in the world?
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: What would be your guess?
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: Okay, hold on, let me think.
- 16:09SPEAKER_00: All right, there are a lot of countries, so let me think.
- 16:12SPEAKER_00: Hold on.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: Um, no idea.
- 16:17SPEAKER_01: No idea.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 16:19SPEAKER_01: When I say it, you'll probably be like, Yeah, okay, I get it.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: Um, France.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: France, France is the most visited country in the world.
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: Really?
- 16:27SPEAKER_01: 102 million people visit per year.
- 16:32SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 16:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: So that's that's amazing.
- 16:35SPEAKER_01: Obviously, you know, Paris is a big draw.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: People love going there.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: I've been to Paris.
- 16:41SPEAKER_01: I I think, you know, I'm really happy that I've been there.
- 16:44SPEAKER_01: You know, it's an incredible place, just incredible.
- 16:47SPEAKER_01: But there's also, you know, the south of France, the beaches, you know, the French Riviera.
- 16:53SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's people who travel but for like gastronomy, like they want to go to certain restaurants or they sure they want to see, you know, like wine regions, you know.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot of different appeals to great point.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Wow.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Number two is Spain.
- 17:09SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 17:10SPEAKER_01: Another country I've been to and highly recommend.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: I mean, I I love Spain.
- 17:15SPEAKER_01: It's like for a pretty small country, it has so many different cultures.
- 17:21unknown: Yeah.
- 17:21SPEAKER_01: You know, you have your Basque culture, you have your uh like gallego culture in Galicia, you've got like the the remnants of the old like Islamic culture in the south, and of course, the east, you know, you've got Catalonia, you know, so there's like a lot of history, a lot of different culture, great food, very it's the second most popular with like about 94 million visitors per year.
- 17:47SPEAKER_01: Unbelievable.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: And how is that how is the um the climate in that there?
- 17:51SPEAKER_00: Is that awesome?
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: The climate, the climate is hot, you know, like that would be a place you would you probably wouldn't want to go in August unless you really love heat, you know.
- 18:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'll stay here.
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: But uh, I've been there in like the late spring, and I've been there in the fall.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Like I was there in October.
- 18:10SPEAKER_01: I was there late October one year in Seville, and it's amazing, very comfortable.
- 18:15SPEAKER_01: It feels great, people are great.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: And the third most popular country is the US of A.
- 18:22SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 18:23SPEAKER_01: 77 million visitors.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Excellent.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: So much to see, like so much.
- 18:30SPEAKER_01: Like, name a few things.
- 18:32SPEAKER_01: Like you've we've both been everywhere in this country.
- 18:34SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we have been everywhere, and it's not always just the tourist spots.
- 18:39SPEAKER_00: Real quick, you know, when I was a kid, you know, and we talked about our our our families in an earlier episode.
- 18:45SPEAKER_00: Big for us back then, remember, because we lived outside New York City, big for us then would be going to, you know, um Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Hershey Park, Pennsylvania, you know, go to the you know, the water in Maine.
- 18:59SPEAKER_00: We used to love that.
- 19:00SPEAKER_00: We would go to Cape Cod, you know, so there's all different regions, all different communities, and it it's it's it's endless.
- 19:08SPEAKER_00: It really is.
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: I I'm just gonna be sad that I'm not gonna be able to in my lifetime get to all of the ones that I want to go to.
- 19:16SPEAKER_00: Because there are so many here.
- 19:17SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean it's a very good point, you know.
- 19:19SPEAKER_01: Life life is limited, and you have to kind of make some priorities of where you want to go.
- 19:25SPEAKER_01: So, so the most popular spots in the US, I I look this up.
- 19:29SPEAKER_01: So uh for the cities, it's New York, of course, uh San Francisco, Miami, uh, Washington, DC, New Orleans.
- 19:39SPEAKER_01: Those are your like top destinations, and and like if you look you think about it, they're all so different.
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: So different.
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: That's exactly what I was thinking when you said it.
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: I'm like, oh, the great food, the great, you know, and then you go to New Orleans and just the atmosphere, the music, the food, the they're all different, and they're all in the one country.
- 19:59SPEAKER_00: It's amazing.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: And and it's uh and I have been to all those.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: I think you no, I'm actually sorry.
- 20:06SPEAKER_01: I haven't been to Miami, believe it or not.
- 20:08SPEAKER_01: Oh, me neither.
- 20:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, me neither.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: We need to go.
- 20:12SPEAKER_01: That's a baseball trip, right?
- 20:13SPEAKER_00: There's a baseball team, we can definitely go there.
- 20:16SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you're right.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: Oh my gosh, out of all of those, yeah, and then for in the US, the like entertainment destinations, yeah, Orlando and Las Vegas, which you've we've both been to.
- 20:28SPEAKER_01: You've been to many times.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: Way too many.
- 20:30SPEAKER_01: And for nature, the top one is the Grand Canyon.
- 20:34SPEAKER_01: Oh, I love it.
- 20:35SPEAKER_01: And then there's uh Yellowstone and Yosemite, and and like you know, once you start talking national parks, my god, there's so much to see.
- 20:45SPEAKER_01: There isn't you need many lifetimes to see the country.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: You're right, you do.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you do, and and that's the thing.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: And and what we were thinking it's so funny because Rockwin we were together, I think it was one it was last year, and we were talking outside.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: I was freezing even though it was a summer, and we were talking about you traveling to Italy and and this past trip you had that was coming up, and it really changed things with me.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: It really switched something in me.
- 21:12SPEAKER_00: Like I love going to work, I love doing all I do, but I also love exploring.
- 21:18SPEAKER_00: I also love going to see places that you know either I've never been or that I love to go.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: And I have to make that decision of pretty soon I've got to make that time to just say, you know what, the rest of the time is mine.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: You know, I don't want to be, you know, selfish about it, but whatever time I do have left, it's gonna be mine and and it will be spent in a train and a plane and a car somewhere going to see something, you know.
- 21:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, I know.
- 21:44SPEAKER_01: They're their life is all only has so much time.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: That is our greatest resource, our most important resource is time.
- 21:53SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 21:54SPEAKER_01: You know, time and money, but time is the most important and the most limited.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: You can You can potentially always make more money, but you cannot make more time.
- 22:05SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: It's so so true.
- 22:07SPEAKER_00: And as I get older, I I I feel that every day.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:10SPEAKER_00: But but yeah, and and there's ways to travel where if you don't have all that money, you can find ways to get places that you can do.
- 22:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Well, why yeah, why don't you mention something about that?
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: Because you are a really incredible budget traveler.
- 22:25SPEAKER_01: So do you have some tips on how to do that?
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: Well, you know, a few things.
- 22:28SPEAKER_00: You know, obviously I also, besides my job, do other jobs, you know, to help, and that's what you know goes towards my trips, you know, is is other, you know, endeavors of of jobs or or reselling or anything like that to help me pay.
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: But also, like say we're going to Disney World, right?
- 22:46SPEAKER_00: It's something we plan a year in advance.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: And we are always looking.
- 22:52SPEAKER_00: There are times where you can find the best deals.
- 22:56SPEAKER_00: We are not travelers where we're like, we can only stay here, you know, like when we go to Las Vegas or we go to Disney or something like that.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: We can only stay here.
- 23:05SPEAKER_00: Well, you know what?
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: If you look now on a package deal through like the airlines or hotels, you can get some amazing deals.
- 23:12SPEAKER_00: And on top of that, there's there's ones that we use, like currently, you know, where we're paying monthly, a very small, you know, portion of it monthly.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: By the time you get there, you feel like you're not even paying for the trip because you spread it out over so many months.
- 23:28SPEAKER_00: That's interesting.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 23:29SPEAKER_00: It's it's it's it's great.
- 23:31SPEAKER_00: And you know, and and the thing is we love even though we go to the same places, we love doing different things, like I said.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: So we'll stay at probably stay at eight different resorts, you know, or because at this point it's the greatest deal is going in November.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: You look at the months, you look obviously the weather.
- 23:50SPEAKER_00: Um, we're not opposed to heat, we're not opposed to cold, you know, where we just want to experience it.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: So you do yeah, like I said, I love doing research and I love finding ways to save because then we get more experiences by saving and paying overtime.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you know, s um you go to New York City a lot, and that is a very expensive city, especially for hotels.
- 24:17SPEAKER_01: Like, do you have any recommendations there on how to find deals at hotels?
- 24:22SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and and here's the thing you have to expand your thought process, right?
- 24:29SPEAKER_00: Like we wanted to go to New York City for Christmas uh last year, right?
- 24:35SPEAKER_00: So my goal, okay.
- 24:37SPEAKER_00: We want to be in the city, what's the most economical but convenient?
- 24:41SPEAKER_00: You know, it's not like I'm gonna take seven trains to get there.
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: We will pay, you know, for for an Uber if it means that's the best way to get from one place or another, you know, like a a ride share to get from one place to another.
- 24:53SPEAKER_00: But so we want to get to the city, hmm, okay, let's figure out is there a subway that gets you from Brooklyn to the city?
- 25:01SPEAKER_00: Is there one from Queens to the city?
- 25:03SPEAKER_00: What's the proximity?
- 25:05SPEAKER_00: Oh, the hotels are this much cheaper if you just go a little further out, but then do my homework.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: We were we were we loved when we went this past December.
- 25:15SPEAKER_00: We stayed in Brooklyn and we stayed in Diker Heights and very famous Christmas uh area, and found that you know what, where we're staying, what an amazing hotel, what a deal.
- 25:26SPEAKER_00: And there was an express bus right outside the door that took you to Manhattan, you know, so for like seven dollars we were in and out, back and forth constantly.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: But it takes doing research, you know, and a and taking time to figure out, you know, don't plan it if you're going in December, don't plan it in November.
- 25:45SPEAKER_00: You know, I look now to say, hey, okay, this is the best deal.
- 25:50SPEAKER_00: Um, and sometimes, like I say, we do an airline and hotel deal quite often, you know, and that saves us a lot of money.
- 25:59SPEAKER_01: Great, great tips.
- 26:01SPEAKER_01: And if um if people have not been to New York uh in December, you should go.
- 26:07SPEAKER_01: You know, you do have the risk of the weather, you know, you may get rain, you may get snow, you may get wind.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: But my goodness, the city is beautiful, like around Christmas.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: It's beautiful.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: You're so right.
- 26:20SPEAKER_00: And you can get all those weathers in the same day in New York, but it's so so worth it.
- 26:25SPEAKER_00: It's so magical.
- 26:26SPEAKER_00: I mean, obviously, I've been going for you know how many decades of my whole life, but it's still I feel like a kid every every Christmas when we go there and just see it, and just like I'm taking pictures of the same lights and trees and stuff like that, but I don't care.
- 26:41SPEAKER_00: I don't care.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: It is beautiful.
- 26:43SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it is.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Any uh any other travel tips, not necessarily just about e economic, but just tips in general?
- 26:51SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: And and uh this is not for everyone, but I travel light, you know.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: I I really do either a a work trip, uh personal trip.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I travel light.
- 27:02SPEAKER_00: I travel, I I try and be smart about it, you know.
- 27:06SPEAKER_00: I I like to dress nice on on travel days, you know, there and back.
- 27:10SPEAKER_00: There's no reason why they can't be the same, you know, you know, clothing for there and back, you know.
- 27:16SPEAKER_00: Um I also travel so that I know everywhere we go, uh there's a store you can buy whatever you forgot, or or if you need something else.
- 27:25SPEAKER_00: You know, don't overpack just for the sake that, oh, I need to have this.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: I no, you know what?
- 27:30SPEAKER_00: If you need it, you really could go and buy it.
- 27:33SPEAKER_00: And there are many times we do that.
- 27:35SPEAKER_00: We bought a coat this past November in New York City because it all of a sudden got really cold though it wasn't supposed to, you know.
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: So I I love to go with you know my backpack, maybe a little carry-on and always have something on me that if I need to obviously most people know this.
- 27:53SPEAKER_00: I uh if if a bag is lost late, you know, connections late, whatever, I always have what I need for a day in my backpack.
- 28:02SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so perfect.
- 28:03SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: How about you, Rock?
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, uh what you know the tips that I have is like the first thing that you need to think about is, you know, why are you taking the trip you're taking?
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: Like when you when you're planning your trip, why are you going and why is everyone else on this trip going?
- 28:22SPEAKER_01: You know, and try to be aligned with each other, you know, because if someone wants to see every museum in the city and the other one hates museums, you know, you you need to think about that beforehand, you know.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: And you know, and and and that's an important one if you're traveling with kids, you know.
- 28:39SPEAKER_01: I I went, you know, Susan and I took our four kids to Italy so many times when they were very young.
- 28:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:48SPEAKER_01: And I love museums, I love art and history and all this kind of stuff.
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: And you know, I just I knew that that was not gonna go well, right.
- 28:58SPEAKER_01: If you know, and so I I made plans to do things that you know the kids would also like that we could also enjoy.
- 29:06SPEAKER_01: So, you know, think about who's on this trip, you know.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 29:10SPEAKER_01: A tip that I have about like where to stay is um I have had very, very good experiences with Airbnb.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: Airbnb, um, you know, I know there are others, you know, other kind of like uh sharing kind of place websites, but I've only really used Airbnb.
- 29:32SPEAKER_01: And uh what I love about it is it gives you a lot more options uh when you're traveling.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: You know, you can if all you were looking at is hotels, you know, you have certain options.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Hotels tend to be in certain parts of the city that are like more central, more touristy, and and it's just a room, you know.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: And and what's nice about Airbnb is you can get a kitchen, you know, and and you can, you know, you could save some money by you know eating in your Airbnb, you know, it's especially if you travel with kids, you know.
- 30:05SPEAKER_01: It's really nice to have a a place that's bigger than a hotel room or two hotel rooms, a place where you can spread out, maybe have a living room, maybe you have a backyard, who knows what you have.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: Like I've had a many different Airbnbs.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: So consider Airbnb, you know, also related to that is there's a thing in Airbnb called Airbnb experiences, uh, which is not the accommodation, but it's like a local person who you can book to do something with.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Like they can take you on a like a walking tour of the city, they could like do like a food tour of the city.
- 30:45SPEAKER_01: When Susan and I went to Sicily a few years ago, we got a tour where this guy took us in his Land Rover out to some national park, like where we saw these mountains and stuff.
- 30:57SPEAKER_01: We got like way, we were in Catania, Sicily, and we got way out to this national park, and and he, you know, set up a picnic for us and stuff like that.
- 31:07SPEAKER_01: It didn't cost that much.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: He was a local guy, yeah.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: And we got to look, you know, got to know him.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: He told us about places to go in the city, and you know, it was like that's incredible.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: And that that's an Airbnb experience, you know.
- 31:19SPEAKER_01: Once I went to Seville, and this is a recommendation I have is um if you're going to a place you've never been, try booking an Airbnb experience like a walking tour the first day you get there.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: Okay, because then you can get the lay of the land from a local.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: Oh uh, and these people go ahead.
- 31:40SPEAKER_00: No, so that sets you up for the rest of your trip there.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 31:43SPEAKER_01: So when I went to Seville, which I had never been to, I I did this walking tour, you know.
- 31:49SPEAKER_01: Uh the the person guiding the tour was uh, you know, a local young young man, like uh I think he was like a history graduate student at the local university.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: And so this was like a history of Seville walking tour slash, like, you know, at the end you go to a bar to have drinks with him, and and and they were like complete experience.
- 32:12SPEAKER_01: It was it was, it truly was.
- 32:14SPEAKER_01: There were like six other people on the tour, so I met a few people, which was fun, and I knew how to work walk around the old city of Seville by the time that night was over, including learning of a really good local bar slash restaurant.
- 32:29SPEAKER_01: That's so perfect.
- 32:30SPEAKER_01: So try that.
- 32:31SPEAKER_01: That's a uh I will.
- 32:34SPEAKER_00: That's awesome.
- 32:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and and so another tip I have is I was kind of alluded to earlier is like, you know, plan your trip, but don't overplan your trip.
- 32:43SPEAKER_01: Let let this trip breathe.
- 32:46SPEAKER_01: You know, sometimes the best thing you can do is just go for just walk around a city that you're visiting, just walk and things happen.
- 32:54SPEAKER_01: You meet people, you find a spot you didn't expect.
- 32:59SPEAKER_01: On the other hand, don't miss a once-in-a-lifetime experience because you didn't plan, you know, like you don't want you don't want to like go to Rome once in your life and not go to the Coliseum.
- 33:12SPEAKER_01: You have to plan for stuff like that.
- 33:14SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:14SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_00: So basically you're saying plan but over don't over plan.
- 33:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 33:19SPEAKER_01: Let yourself experience the trip.
- 33:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah, don't spend your whole trip taking 700 pictures.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 33:26SPEAKER_01: You're you're not immersed in your trip.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 33:29SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna look at those 700 pictures, and and believe me, nobody you know wants to see them.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Nobody cares.
- 33:36SPEAKER_01: Nobody cares.
- 33:38SPEAKER_01: So, you know, they're just gonna take a lot of they're just gonna take a lot of space on your phone, and it's like you are not a photojournalist, you're a person in experiencing a trip.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, uh another thing I'd recommend is I I do this in Italy a lot.
- 34:00SPEAKER_01: It's like uh ask local people where to eat.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: So like I'll be in a shop, you know, looking at something, maybe buying something, and as I'm checking out, I'll just say to the person behind the counter, you know, can you recommend a place, you know, like a real place to eat, not the tourist place.
- 34:21SPEAKER_01: Like, where would you eat?
- 34:22SPEAKER_01: Where does your family eat?
- 34:23SPEAKER_01: And they are usually very excited to share like a place, and and I've had found a lot of good spots that way.
- 34:30SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: We we we had a similar um experience with one trip um going out to Las Vegas, and uh we had a canceled flight in Phoenix, and so everyone was sitting there for hours and hours, you know, at the gate.
- 34:44SPEAKER_00: And so then everyone just started asking people questions of their favorite Las Vegas.
- 34:49SPEAKER_00: Okay, I want to know, you know, locally where would you go?
- 34:52SPEAKER_00: And then everyone just started giving their oh, really?
- 34:54SPEAKER_00: You know, oh I know the owner of that place, and it just kept going and going and going.
- 34:58SPEAKER_00: It it it was such a great community experience, and we've gone to quite a few of those places that people recommended years ago.
- 35:05SPEAKER_00: So we love it.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:07SPEAKER_01: And and so, you know, do that.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: You know, of course, the guidebooks are gonna tell you where to go, and and they're they'll be good places, but you know, you're gonna get a more authentic experience if you ask a local.
- 35:17SPEAKER_00: Love it.
- 35:18SPEAKER_01: Uh, and the last thing that I would say is that when you're traveling, and the and this is more for international travel, remember that you're you're in a real place, you know.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: It's not Epcot Center, you know, it's a real place where people live, people work, they raise their kids, they do they're not there to be like uh like in your photo, right?
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: You know, like the old lady sitting in front of her house.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: You know, don't just take a picture of her.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: She's not local color, she's not like colonial Williamsburg or something, you know.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: This is a real person.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Um I love that.
- 35:59SPEAKER_00: Yeah, someday people will be taking pictures of us.
- 36:03SPEAKER_00: I don't believe that will happen.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: But that's so true.
- 36:06SPEAKER_00: And and with that rock, you know, I always thought, and I'm sure this is common or or normal, but how many times I've gone on a trip, right, and be like, oh my god, I can so live here.
- 36:18SPEAKER_00: No, you can't.
- 36:19SPEAKER_00: You know, it's it's it's great for three days, it's great for the week.
- 36:22SPEAKER_00: You're doing touristy things and and just eating out and stuff like that.
- 36:27SPEAKER_00: People live there, like you said, people work there.
- 36:30SPEAKER_00: Very rarely do you, you know, when you say, I can easily live here.
- 36:34SPEAKER_00: No you can't.
- 36:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you really don't you don't even know.
- 36:38SPEAKER_01: No, you you don't even know what you don't know about a place like that, you know, when you go.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: And and you know, remember you're a guest, you're a guest there, and and and be be a good guest.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: Don't be that like you know, stereotypical ugly American when you travel.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Like appreciate, appreciate the people and and everything, and like, you know, I don't know, try, you know, tread lightly, yeah, is what I would say.
- 37:03SPEAKER_01: Good.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: Love it.
- 37:04SPEAKER_01: So yeah, any other sort of like recommendations or anything before we kind of close it up?
- 37:12SPEAKER_00: You know, I think we said a lot, and I think we said, you know, what matters to us and and what travel means to us.
- 37:19SPEAKER_00: I hope you you get the the fact that you know it it's really important to us.
- 37:23SPEAKER_00: It could be really important to you, and it's such a great thing to look forward to.
- 37:27SPEAKER_00: Like, like even simple, we're going to Cleveland on Monday, right?
- 37:33SPEAKER_00: And for anyone who knows from Buffalo, yeah, like three hours, you know, three hour drive, which is nothing.
- 37:38SPEAKER_00: But I can't tell you, it's breaking up an incredibly busy point in work, at home with our animals, and it's just something that I'm like, okay, you know, three hours here, I'm gonna go watch a a Guardians and Yankees game with my wife, get some dinner, and leave stay in a hotel, leave the next morning.
- 37:57SPEAKER_00: I will be refreshed, recharged.
- 37:59SPEAKER_00: But it's just something that is it's at our fingertips.
- 38:02SPEAKER_00: Um, we're doing it so it's not costing a lot at all, and it's just worth so much more to me than what it is costing me.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: Well, that that is a great point.
- 38:14SPEAKER_01: Um, and I you know, I want to yeah, I wanted to mention that.
- 38:17SPEAKER_01: I I I'm glad you mentioned that.
- 38:19SPEAKER_01: You know, the three-day weekend, the four-day weekend, that's a good trip.
- 38:24SPEAKER_01: That's a really good trip.
- 38:26SPEAKER_01: It doesn't have to be an exotic location.
- 38:28SPEAKER_01: No, what you need is that recharge, that like reset.
- 38:33SPEAKER_01: Just get away and don't turn it into a big thing, just go somewhere, yeah, and and just reset.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Absolutely.
- 38:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, thank you.
- 38:41SPEAKER_01: I'm glad you mentioned that.
- 38:43SPEAKER_01: So that's it for this uh portion of the program.
- 38:47SPEAKER_00: Now it's time for Dr.
- 38:48SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Dr.
- 38:50SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 38:54SPEAKER_01: Now it's time for Dr.
- 38:56SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex.
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: So Dr.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: Rocco's Rex this week is related to the topic of travel.
- 39:04SPEAKER_01: I recommend uh, if you're traveling to Europe, uh the Rick Steves guidebooks.
- 39:10SPEAKER_01: I think these books are uh a true truly a godsend.
- 39:15SPEAKER_01: I've used them for multiple locations, and what is great about Rick Steves books is his philosophy is that you know a good guidebook is supposed to help you to save money and time.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: So when you use his guidebook and you really kind of pay attention and plan ahead, as Pete said earlier, planning ahead is key, you can get tips on how to skip lines at museums.
- 39:42SPEAKER_01: Like you could stand online literally at the Vatican Museum for two hours to get in.
- 39:48SPEAKER_01: Those are two hours out of your trip.
- 39:50SPEAKER_01: Is that how you want to spend your time?
- 39:52SPEAKER_01: If you use the Rick Steves guidebook, you know, literally I have seen a line around the around a museum in Florence, the Academia Museum, and I walked to a door and walked in because I used this guidebook.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: I just walked in and I skipped that entire line and was able to enjoy my trip more.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: So, I mean, there's all other all kinds of other reasons.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: He has all kinds of like self-guided walking tours in his guidebooks, etc.
- 40:22SPEAKER_01: There's a lot of reasons to do it.
- 40:24SPEAKER_01: Check out a Rick Steve's book if you're going to Europe.
