Transcript
- 0:16Speaker 1: Hey, Hurdler's Emily Abadi here bringing you another installment of
- 0:20Speaker 1: five Minute Friday. I've been getting a lot of really
- 0:24Speaker 1: great feedback on this segment lately, and that's good as always,
- 0:30Speaker 1: because for a while there I felt as though I
- 0:33Speaker 1: wasn't getting much of it and was just kind of
- 0:35Speaker 1: hoping that this was resonating with you. So, if you
- 0:39Speaker 1: do like what you listen to on these five minute
- 0:43Speaker 1: Friday segments, do not hesitate to let me know over
- 0:47Speaker 1: on social at Hurdle Podcast, at Emily a Body or
- 0:51Speaker 1: also over email. You can hit me up at Emily
- 0:53Speaker 1: at hurdle dot us. If you're new to five Minute Friday,
- 0:57Speaker 1: welcome the gist. Here. I share a little story, I
- 1:02Speaker 1: offer you a thought prompt, and I give you some
- 1:04Speaker 1: highlights from my week, some content pics, some things that
- 1:08Speaker 1: I'm digging to send you off into the weekend. So
- 1:13Speaker 1: this week I did something kind of it kind of
- 1:18Speaker 1: felt like a big deal. I threw out my scale. Listen.
- 1:23Speaker 1: I have been on a tear lately, and not like
- 1:26Speaker 1: the kind of tear where you're just like drinking yourself
- 1:28Speaker 1: into oblivion, although like believe me, I've had those moments
- 1:31Speaker 1: in my life, or like shopping like crazy. Although there
- 1:35Speaker 1: has been some of that, I have been on this
- 1:38Speaker 1: tear of decluttering and getting rid of things that just
- 1:44Speaker 1: don't make me happy. It started with I went to
- 1:47Speaker 1: visit my best friend in Rhode Island a few weeks back,
- 1:50Speaker 1: as I mentioned on the show, and her home literally
- 1:53Speaker 1: belongs inside of Architectural Digest. First of all, her home
- 1:56Speaker 1: itself is stunning, but the way she has decorated it
- 2:00Speaker 1: is perfection. Everything is minimalist and it's full of neutrals,
- 2:06Speaker 1: and everything in the home like has a very specific place.
- 2:10Speaker 1: It's like she's one of those people that if you say, hey,
- 2:12Speaker 1: do you have an iPhone charger? The iPhone charger is
- 2:16Speaker 1: not in a messy box of cords like I used
- 2:19Speaker 1: to have. It's actually like perfectly rolled up in this
- 2:22Speaker 1: one drawer off to the side by the right, and
- 2:24Speaker 1: she only has two. Clearly, you know we differ on that. Anyway,
- 2:30Speaker 1: I went to visit her, I came home and I
- 2:33Speaker 1: walked in my apartment and all I wanted to do
- 2:35Speaker 1: was just get rid of the bulk. And so it started.
- 2:40Speaker 1: It started with me deciding to get rid of the
- 2:43Speaker 1: IKEA bookshelf turned TV stand that I've had since twenty ten.
- 2:47Speaker 1: And then it went to me replacing the light above
- 2:50Speaker 1: my bed, and then it was getting rid of this
- 2:53Speaker 1: side table which didn't match the rest of my apartment.
- 2:55Speaker 1: And then it was ordering a new bookshelf, and then
- 2:59Speaker 1: it was replaced the dining room table that was given
- 3:01Speaker 1: to me by my old neighbors. Like, there were just
- 3:03Speaker 1: so many things in my home that felt kind of
- 3:06Speaker 1: pieced together but not super deliberate, and I wanted to
- 3:11Speaker 1: get deliberate, you get the idea. I just I needed
- 3:14Speaker 1: to make some changes. So the first part of the
- 3:18Speaker 1: purge was getting rid of like the bigger things that
- 3:21Speaker 1: didn't serve me. But then I started going through all
- 3:24Speaker 1: of the bins that I have in here, like just
- 3:27Speaker 1: like my storage solution, and I started finding all of
- 3:30Speaker 1: these things I haven't touched in years. Everything from a
- 3:34Speaker 1: Nike fuel band if you remember those Christmas cards from
- 3:37Speaker 1: my family, an MP three players specifically for swimming that
- 3:41Speaker 1: they don't make anymore, but was awesome when I used it.
- 3:44Speaker 1: Let's see here, Kapa Kapa Gama T shirt, like just
- 3:47Speaker 1: fold it up in a bin for no reason. So many,
- 3:51Speaker 1: oh god, so many mementos from past relationships, like the
- 3:55Speaker 1: notes that come when someone sends you flowers, or books
- 3:59Speaker 1: that were gifted to me, or photos and cards, just
- 4:04Speaker 1: so many things that felt heavy on me that I
- 4:07Speaker 1: just didn't need anymore, and so I did all this
- 4:11Speaker 1: cleaning out. I'm like standing in my living room with
- 4:14Speaker 1: these two large trash bags, and it felt literally like
- 4:17Speaker 1: a scene out of a movie. Like I'm standing by
- 4:19Speaker 1: my front door and I'm like looking back into the
- 4:22Speaker 1: apartment to see if I left anything that needs to
- 4:25Speaker 1: come down the four flights of stairs to the garbage
- 4:27Speaker 1: room with me, and I look across the room and
- 4:32Speaker 1: I see my scale peeking out from under my bed.
- 4:37Speaker 1: And it's so funny because I have had this scale
- 4:42Speaker 1: since before probably I started my weight loss journey, So
- 4:46Speaker 1: this means that I've had the scale I'm not even
- 4:49Speaker 1: getting maybe twelve years, and it is super faded, and
- 4:54Speaker 1: all of the branding was rubbed off, and it like
- 4:57Speaker 1: isn't anything special, and I'm not even sure if it's
- 5:00Speaker 1: entirely accurate anymore. I saw this scale out of corner
- 5:04Speaker 1: of my eye when I was looking across the apartment,
- 5:06Speaker 1: and I like walked over to it and I picked
- 5:09Speaker 1: it up and I just kind of felt what it
- 5:15Speaker 1: felt like to be holding that in my hands, if
- 5:18Speaker 1: it makes sense, like holding that scale not to say
- 5:21Speaker 1: that normally holding a scale would bring you any amount
- 5:24Speaker 1: of joy, but holding the scale in that moment, it
- 5:26Speaker 1: reminded me of so many things that I don't want
- 5:28Speaker 1: for my life, Like it reminded me of moments of
- 5:31Speaker 1: self doubt, and like so many times that I felt
- 5:34Speaker 1: like seeing a certain number was better than a previous number,
- 5:37Speaker 1: or the days that I would like go running and
- 5:39Speaker 1: come back in and weigh myself after the run to
- 5:41Speaker 1: see the progress I had made, although like that isn't
- 5:43Speaker 1: a realistic of any sort of positive progress. I thought
- 5:47Speaker 1: about the days that I was made to feel lesser
- 5:49Speaker 1: than because of what that thing said. And I was
- 5:52Speaker 1: just standing there and holding it, and I thought to myself, like,
- 5:55Speaker 1: I am so over that. And so I walked back
- 6:00Speaker 1: to the front door and I threw it in the
- 6:03Speaker 1: garbage bag, and it felt very empowering. It felt really empowering.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I walked down the stairs and I threw it away,
- 6:12Speaker 1: and I came back in and I thought to myself, Yeah,
- 6:18Speaker 1: that was the right thing. Now I'm not sitting here
- 6:21Speaker 1: nodding my head, thinking I'm not going to get another scale.
- 6:24Speaker 1: I will very likely, very soon probably get myself another scale,
- 6:30Speaker 1: but for now, it just felt really good to let
- 6:34Speaker 1: go of that burden, to let go of something from
- 6:37Speaker 1: my past, to move forward more positively into my future.
- 6:44Speaker 1: So I prompt for you this week, what is one
- 6:48Speaker 1: thing you can get rid of today that would make
- 6:51Speaker 1: you feel instantly lighter again? What is one thing you
- 6:55Speaker 1: can get rid of today that would make you feel
- 6:58Speaker 1: instantly lighter Highlights of the week. All of the links
- 7:02Speaker 1: to this stuff can be found in the show notes.
- 7:05Speaker 1: First things Up, listen to NPR's Life Kit how to
- 7:08Speaker 1: Vote by Mail a guide. Life Kit is a really
- 7:12Speaker 1: awesome podcast. I don't know if any of you listen
- 7:14Speaker 1: to it, but basically, it's a show from NPR that
- 7:17Speaker 1: covers everything that you could need to make your life easier,
- 7:20Speaker 1: like topics from COVID etiquette to how to get your
- 7:24Speaker 1: cold brew fix now that you're not commuting anymore. Whenever
- 7:27Speaker 1: I see new episodes pop into my feed, I think
- 7:29Speaker 1: to myself, like, Wow, that's a really helpful life topic.
- 7:33Speaker 1: Hence the name Life Kit. Well, they put together this
- 7:36Speaker 1: really helpful episode explaining exactly how to vote by mail,
- 7:41Speaker 1: and I think it answers a lot of the questions
- 7:42Speaker 1: that I had that maybe I wasn't deliberately asking, So
- 7:47Speaker 1: I believe it will help you as well. Next up
- 7:50Speaker 1: order for yourself. It's called Long Distance. For many of us,
- 7:54Speaker 1: running has become even more of an outlet during the pandemic,
- 7:58Speaker 1: and Long Distance is a math magazine that's put together
- 8:01Speaker 1: by a good friend of mine, Jason and his friend Dewey,
- 8:04Speaker 1: and is now available for pre order. This magazine it
- 8:08Speaker 1: documents global running culture in twenty twenty during the pandemic,
- 8:13Speaker 1: and features writers and photographers from all around the world.
- 8:16Speaker 1: This is definitely something that you're going to want to
- 8:18Speaker 1: have on your coffee table. It again is available for
- 8:22Speaker 1: pre order, but we'll be shipping in late September early October.
- 8:27Speaker 1: The initial photos and the teasers that they put out
- 8:30Speaker 1: on social media about this, this looks dope. Up. Next
- 8:35Speaker 1: watch Selling Sunset. I know I'm so lame, I'm so predictable.
- 8:39Speaker 1: You can tell me. I get it. I finally caved
- 8:43Speaker 1: on this Netflix show. If you ask me, reality really
- 8:46Speaker 1: doesn't get much more like glam or real than this
- 8:51Speaker 1: and that sounds super silly to say, but the show
- 8:54Speaker 1: is about a group of real estate agents working for
- 8:57Speaker 1: a company called the Oppenheim Group in LA and they
- 9:00Speaker 1: just sell some of the most ridiculous houses. So it
- 9:04Speaker 1: gives me my HGTV fix, and it also gives me
- 9:08Speaker 1: my lame reality television fix, and that's why I think
- 9:11Speaker 1: this is a don't miss. They launch season three recently.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I'm still in season one, but I hear it only
- 9:17Speaker 1: gets better. So there's that last, but not least, I
- 9:21Speaker 1: want to talk up again Thrive Market. They're a new
- 9:24Speaker 1: hurdle sponsor, which is why I love to give them
- 9:26Speaker 1: a little bit of extra airtime. I talked about them
- 9:29Speaker 1: on Wednesday's episode. If you don't know about Thrive Market, basically,
- 9:33Speaker 1: they are an online marketplace that has a membership program
- 9:36Speaker 1: similar to like cost Go and where you get grocery
- 9:39Speaker 1: items for twenty five to fifty percent off the value
- 9:43Speaker 1: you might see inside your local grocery store. And they've
- 9:47Speaker 1: got all of the brands that I want to buy
- 9:49Speaker 1: but always hesitate because it is so expensive. When I
- 9:53Speaker 1: go to my local grocery store, it's stuff like Sun
- 9:55Speaker 1: Warrior Noon or gain Right Rice, Missus Myers. I swear
- 9:59Speaker 1: this so that I usually buy at my grocery store
- 10:02Speaker 1: for ten dollars is less than three dollars on the
- 10:06Speaker 1: Thrive Market website, and if you click over to the
- 10:08Speaker 1: show notes and sign up for a membership, you'll get
- 10:12Speaker 1: a free gift that's up to twenty two dollars. It's really,
- 10:15Speaker 1: in my eyes, a no brainer, especially if you live
- 10:19Speaker 1: in a major city. And that's it for this week.
- 10:22Speaker 1: I'm really, really really really can't even say really enough
- 10:25Speaker 1: amped for this coming Tuesday Night's hurdle session handling hurdle moments.
- 10:30Speaker 1: There are a few spots left. The hurdle session is
- 10:34Speaker 1: limited to only twenty live participants, so if you want in,
- 10:39Speaker 1: we're going to be talking about how to show up
- 10:42Speaker 1: to life's toughest hurdle moments with a positive attitude and
- 10:45Speaker 1: emerge on the other side of challenge a more optimistic
- 10:49Speaker 1: and better human. You know me, You know I'm all
- 10:52Speaker 1: about putting in the work, and that is exactly what
- 10:56Speaker 1: Tuesday Night is about. So if you have any more
- 10:58Speaker 1: questions about what that might look like, I feel free
- 11:00Speaker 1: to reach out to me in the DMS or over email.
- 11:03Speaker 1: I am more than happy to chat, and I'm excited
- 11:06Speaker 1: to say that we are now at over eight hundred
- 11:08Speaker 1: and thirty ratings and reviews in the iTunes store. We
- 11:12Speaker 1: have twelve days left of August. It's a lofty goal.
- 11:15Speaker 1: I'm aiming for that one thousand. So if you are
- 11:18Speaker 1: listening at this very moment, head on into the iTunes store,
- 11:22Speaker 1: do me a solid rate and review the show, and
- 11:24Speaker 1: that's it. Another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys next time.
