A wildfire that destroyed the Grand Canyon Lodge also threatened North Canyon Creek — one of only two spring-fed streams on the Kaibab Plateau. Now, crews are racing against time to stop erosion before monsoon rains wash ash and soil into the creek and eventually the Colorado River. Using fallen trees and rock-log barriers, they’re trapping sediment to aid forest regrowth and protect meadows. The area shelters rare species like the Apache trout, Arizona’s state fish, which hasn’t been spotted since the fire — raising concerns for restocking.
