- 1:17Speaker 1: Welcome to the Favorites, the podcast from the Value and
- 1:21Speaker 1: Podcast Network. I'm Shad Moment, Chief Content Officer of the
- 1:24Speaker 1: Action Network. NBA playoffs are about to begin. I love
- 1:29Speaker 1: this time of year. It is going to be two
- 1:32Speaker 1: straight months of high intensity, defensive focused basketball with the
- 1:37Speaker 1: greatest athletes in the world showing it off. Later on
- 1:41Speaker 1: in the show, our friend Colin Cowherd, he was with
- 1:45Speaker 1: us last week. He's back again this week to talk
- 1:48Speaker 1: all things n B a variety of topics, along with
- 1:52Speaker 1: me and my co host Might BFF, my companion Mi
- 1:55Speaker 1: Compadre Professional Better Simon Hunter. Hello, saw Amen. Yes, great
- 2:01Speaker 1: time to be talking to NBA because my team, the Sixers,
- 2:04Speaker 1: are one of the best teams in the East. So
- 2:06Speaker 1: you know how exit I am for this season. Listen,
- 2:08Speaker 1: there's a lot of legacy defining moments on the line
- 2:12Speaker 1: for the Sixers. What's so interesting about the Sixers and
- 2:15Speaker 1: I'm sure kind will have a take about this. What's
- 2:18Speaker 1: so interesting about the Sixers is everyone celebrated the idea
- 2:23Speaker 1: of the process and Sam Hanky breaking this team down,
- 2:28Speaker 1: multiple years of tanking to get Joe l embiid, to
- 2:32Speaker 1: get Nerland's Noel, to get Ben Simmons right, and what's
- 2:40Speaker 1: that for? And oka for right? All these years of
- 2:45Speaker 1: taking to get a team that he was building in
- 2:48Speaker 1: the image of analytics right, all of a sudden he
- 2:53Speaker 1: gets fired. The team starts to develop around all the
- 2:57Speaker 1: players that he loved and he draft did. It's a
- 3:01Speaker 1: kind of a true success story. And then what's interesting
- 3:04Speaker 1: even after that is they bring in Darryl Maury, who's
- 3:06Speaker 1: the father of analytics in the NBA, and he's busting
- 3:10Speaker 1: the team up and going in a completely different direction
- 3:14Speaker 1: and going all in on a guy in James Harden
- 3:17Speaker 1: who isn't the player that was sort of the analytics
- 3:19Speaker 1: superstar when Maury had him in Houston. So the legacy
- 3:23Speaker 1: of this team is really about the process. But what
- 3:26Speaker 1: is going to define whether or not anything was successful
- 3:30Speaker 1: is going to be the connection between two superstars, which
- 3:33Speaker 1: is what it always is in the NBA. Yeah, it's
- 3:36Speaker 1: like you're on either side. You really wanted to fail,
- 3:39Speaker 1: you wanted to succeed, And I feel like we can
- 3:41Speaker 1: all agree that it did succeed. Like his whole little
- 3:44Speaker 1: plan of the NBA is just about having the superstar.
- 3:48Speaker 1: I want as many rounds and like clips and the
- 3:51Speaker 1: gun to shoot many times, like in the first round,
- 3:53Speaker 1: second round, just try to hit these guys. Little did
- 3:56Speaker 1: we know we're gonna get a guy that foot issues
- 3:58Speaker 1: and back problems. Third pick overall and Embiid. I think
- 4:01Speaker 1: he played fifty games in the first three years. That's
- 4:05Speaker 1: that's what it's all about. It's like you just take
- 4:07Speaker 1: these high risks where there's sure things, and the Marquelle Folts,
- 4:10Speaker 1: the Ben Simmons, I've seen all of them fall by
- 4:12Speaker 1: their waistide. So it's been um As a fan, it's
- 4:15Speaker 1: been interesting where it's like I remember those days of
- 4:19Speaker 1: just horrible basketball, Like literally they're playing G League guys
- 4:23Speaker 1: as are starting five, like guys that would not be
- 4:25Speaker 1: in the league without the sixers existing, like not even
- 4:28Speaker 1: bench guys. And to me, it's like, yeah, we've kind
- 4:32Speaker 1: of busted in every playoff thing. But as a basketball fan,
- 4:35Speaker 1: this is kind of what I like. It's like we
- 4:37Speaker 1: have a superstar. We're always in contention, we're always in
- 4:40Speaker 1: the news because we have the players that that to me,
- 4:43Speaker 1: is what it's all about, where you don't want to
- 4:44Speaker 1: be like the Knicks. The Knicks never have any real superstars.
- 4:48Speaker 1: I mean they have Porzingis for a cup of coffee
- 4:49Speaker 1: there and Mellow, But a lot of these teams they
- 4:52Speaker 1: just spin their tires at that five six seed where
- 4:55Speaker 1: they want to be the top seed or the worst
- 4:56Speaker 1: teaming basketball. To me, that's what I think he was
- 4:58Speaker 1: all about. So now we'll find out, right, we'll find
- 5:02Speaker 1: out once and for all which way works. Is it
- 5:06Speaker 1: a superstar tandem that can do it. It's a very
- 5:10Speaker 1: interesting time. You look at the top of the East,
- 5:12Speaker 1: the Bucks, the Heat who as the season wound down,
- 5:16Speaker 1: had that incredible clip of Houdonis Haslem and Jimmy Butler
- 5:20Speaker 1: and Eric Spoelstra going after each other. It's already hard
- 5:24Speaker 1: to remember. That was just phenomenal. You don't see that
- 5:27Speaker 1: in the NBA. And you got the Sixers like that's
- 5:30Speaker 1: clearly the cream of the crop. And then like in
- 5:33Speaker 1: that next year, the Celtics are a team right that
- 5:36Speaker 1: could bust through. The Bulls have probably proven that they're
- 5:39Speaker 1: not quite ready. They needed their full compliment. Uh, they
- 5:43Speaker 1: had too many injuries this year to really compete, So
- 5:46Speaker 1: this is a good shot for the Sixers. My only
- 5:48Speaker 1: fear as a fan is the nets Like Kyrie, we
- 5:50Speaker 1: all know he's gonna be back full steam the playoffs.
- 5:53Speaker 1: To me, of all the teams that we played, they
- 5:55Speaker 1: seem like they lllegit hate they hate us. I don't
- 5:57Speaker 1: know it's just because we're getting Ben in his back
- 5:59Speaker 1: or what, but I've watched him play a couple of
- 6:01Speaker 1: games down. The effort they put against the six Series
- 6:03Speaker 1: compared to these other teams they play, it was definitely
- 6:06Speaker 1: alarm and k D is awesome because every single day
- 6:09Speaker 1: it just seems like there's another clip on social media
- 6:12Speaker 1: of him trash tracking fans. Why he's playing it's honestly
- 6:17Speaker 1: Kadi against the world. Yeah, no, he's leaning into it
- 6:20Speaker 1: because for a while there he was going through I
- 6:22Speaker 1: think a lot of us go through in life where
- 6:24Speaker 1: it's like, why don't these people like me? People have
- 6:25Speaker 1: liked my whole life. Why does everyone hate me when
- 6:28Speaker 1: they would have done exactly what I did, which is
- 6:30Speaker 1: go to Golden State. And I love the Katie of
- 6:34Speaker 1: embracing the hate like he does not care. He'll tell
- 6:37Speaker 1: people how it is. I mean, one of my favorite
- 6:39Speaker 1: stories ever was he went on a date with a
- 6:41Speaker 1: girl and she asked him who the other girl was
- 6:43Speaker 1: behind him, and he said, that's my other day in
- 6:45Speaker 1: case this day doesn't work out. I feel like that
- 6:48Speaker 1: is Kadi to the max. That's his like attitude on everything.
- 6:51Speaker 1: So I love Katie. I've never heard that story. Yeah,
- 6:55Speaker 1: it's true story. So I did like a right, I
- 6:57Speaker 1: could tell all book about Katie and Kyrie that first
- 6:59Speaker 1: year for the Nuts and it's it's in there. It's
- 7:02Speaker 1: a great story about him bringing a girl with him
- 7:04Speaker 1: on a date to a date. See, that's so interesting.
- 7:07Speaker 1: Kobe went through the same thing, right. Kobe came in
- 7:09Speaker 1: the league and as a teenager and was trying to
- 7:13Speaker 1: be marketed as you know, this all American story and
- 7:17Speaker 1: this good looking guy and he's going to the problem
- 7:20Speaker 1: with Brandy and then he's prosecuted for rape. When he
- 7:25Speaker 1: comes out of that, the entire demeanor has changed. It's
- 7:29Speaker 1: almost like that moment freed him from trying to be
- 7:34Speaker 1: anything he wasn't. For the rest of his career, he
- 7:37Speaker 1: was a super aggressive, hyper competitive, able to be mean
- 7:43Speaker 1: to anybody he wanted to. And k D has sort
- 7:47Speaker 1: of had a transition from being someone who people wanted
- 7:52Speaker 1: to have this very specific demeanor into just being a
- 7:59Speaker 1: ruthless killer. Again, when you're just talking about it, made
- 8:02Speaker 1: me think of a Kobe. I know a lot of
- 8:03Speaker 1: people have said it, but it was just a clip
- 8:05Speaker 1: that I think. Darren Rebel is the one always retweets it.
- 8:07Speaker 1: But people were asking about him being too hard his teammates,
- 8:10Speaker 1: and he said the classic line of if they mind,
- 8:13Speaker 1: they don't matter, and if they matter, they don't mind.
- 8:15Speaker 1: And that was like Kobe's mentality of the whole thing.
- 8:17Speaker 1: It's like you were there with it, either burning the
- 8:20Speaker 1: ships with me or you're taking the ships back. So
- 8:23Speaker 1: I always will love that about Kobe. What one of
- 8:26Speaker 1: the questions we're gonna ask Calhard, you know, because he's
- 8:29Speaker 1: a really rich guy. And if he had five hundred
- 8:32Speaker 1: million dollars five million dollars to invest, would he invested
- 8:38Speaker 1: in mutual funds, would he invest it in crypto and
- 8:42Speaker 1: f t s sort of future digital currency type products,
- 8:47Speaker 1: or would he invested in a team. And if in
- 8:49Speaker 1: a team, which one? If he wants to realize the
- 8:52Speaker 1: most gain on that five hundred million dollars over say
- 8:56Speaker 1: the next ten to fifteen years would one What would
- 9:01Speaker 1: your answer be, I'm too smart for this question, because
- 9:04Speaker 1: immediately went like real nerdy on it. I was like,
- 9:06Speaker 1: I'd buy all the graph flight, all the nicola I
- 9:08Speaker 1: could get my hands on, because that's the future, right,
- 9:10Speaker 1: Everything's gonna be these batteries. Like that's if you watch
- 9:13Speaker 1: the news, you watch any network talking about finance, it's
- 9:16Speaker 1: all about electric all about the batteries and how that's
- 9:18Speaker 1: the future of everything. So to me, if you're trying
- 9:20Speaker 1: to make easy, quick money, it's it's always about natural resources.
- 9:24Speaker 1: I just like natural resources. To me, it's very simple
- 9:27Speaker 1: and it's basic, and some stupid like me can follow
- 9:29Speaker 1: stuff like the demand for wood that I know what
- 9:32Speaker 1: was gonna go up. No, but I knew there's gonna
- 9:34Speaker 1: be a high demand when they started building homes again
- 9:36Speaker 1: after pandemic ended. So that's one of the things where
- 9:39Speaker 1: if I had I just I just invest into natural resources.
- 9:43Speaker 1: To me, that's always the best return because they always
- 9:47Speaker 1: rise and fall with whatever the need is, and right
- 9:49Speaker 1: now the highest need in America it's surprisingly nickel, graph flight,
- 9:53Speaker 1: all these things that we don't really mind. If people
- 9:56Speaker 1: don't really know this, we're a huge export of these
- 9:59Speaker 1: these things America. Like, that's a big problem. So the
- 10:02Speaker 1: next couple of years, weep were gonna see it's gonna
- 10:03Speaker 1: get very different where they're gonna start upping up our
- 10:06Speaker 1: natural resources ability just because we don't want to be
- 10:09Speaker 1: dependent on Russia, we don't want to be dependent on China,
- 10:11Speaker 1: we don't be attending on uh, Taiwan. So that's one
- 10:15Speaker 1: of those things people need to start thinking about when
- 10:16Speaker 1: you're investing natural resources. Did you basically just say that
- 10:20Speaker 1: you made a huge purchase of companies that are would
- 10:24Speaker 1: producers and that paid off for you already? Uh, not
- 10:27Speaker 1: so much this year, but last year, Yeah, like say,
- 10:30Speaker 1: I invested heavily into wood companies. Uh, summer of it
- 10:34Speaker 1: was up like by that December, and it kept going
- 10:38Speaker 1: up through last year. It's only started to drop now
- 10:40Speaker 1: just because the housing markets coming down. But now that's again,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I'm not a smart person. I just watched a lot
- 10:45Speaker 1: of YouTube. Why don't you like when this happens. Why
- 10:48Speaker 1: don't you share this with me? I don't understand. I
- 10:51Speaker 1: give you to advince. I told you about by the
- 10:53Speaker 1: score it was gonna blow up the gambling company and
- 10:55Speaker 1: literally we know a company did not buying the score.
- 10:57Speaker 1: They went from being worth what it was at fifth
- 11:00Speaker 1: dollars to guy, Guy, you never said by the score.
- 11:05Speaker 1: You never said that to me. I said it to
- 11:07Speaker 1: you and p K at the bar in New York.
- 11:09Speaker 1: You know this for a fact. Oh you might have
- 11:12Speaker 1: said that. Yeah, that's true. P K, of course is
- 11:13Speaker 1: Patrick King. We look at me like I was crazy.
- 11:16Speaker 1: You're just like, NA, we don't know about that company.
- 11:18Speaker 1: We dude, I know the score. I'm saying. You guys
- 11:21Speaker 1: are like, I don't know about investing them them. All right, Well,
- 11:23Speaker 1: listen if you want to give me any any tips.
- 11:26Speaker 1: You know, I just gave you guys great ones, graph
- 11:28Speaker 1: Flight Nickel. Look into it all right, I'm writing it down.
- 11:32Speaker 1: You know what. Let's ask Howard is some of these
- 11:34Speaker 1: things he likes to play the market. We can ask
- 11:36Speaker 1: him what he would do with all his money. This

- 13:43Speaker 1: Mr Colin Calherd. He joined us previously. He's come back again.
- 13:47Speaker 1: He liked it that much. Colin Simon and I had
- 13:50Speaker 1: been discussing before you came on a lot of NBA topics.
- 13:54Speaker 1: Things I listened to, you know, I listened to your
- 13:56Speaker 1: radio show. Love your radio show. Consistent themes I hear
- 13:59Speaker 1: you talk out on the radio show. John Moran, his ceiling,
- 14:03Speaker 1: the ability to become a superstar playing in Memphis, Russell
- 14:07Speaker 1: rest Westbrook and his legacy. But the thing that I
- 14:10Speaker 1: want to talk about right now as we are heading
- 14:13Speaker 1: into the playoffs, Harden and n b How far can
- 14:18Speaker 1: the duo like this go when you're looking at them
- 14:21Speaker 1: versus the Nets, versus the Bucks, versus what's happening in
- 14:25Speaker 1: the West. Well, I think the move by the Mayor
- 14:28Speaker 1: of New York to lift certain mandates is actually significant
- 14:34Speaker 1: because historically you need two great closures in the playoffs.
- 14:39Speaker 1: That's why I don't buy Miami. Jimmy Butler is a
- 14:42Speaker 1: great athlete. He plays with great passion. He's not a closer.
- 14:46Speaker 1: He's just a great athlete. In February and March he
- 14:49Speaker 1: shot ten from three UM. He's under forty in the
- 14:53Speaker 1: fourth quarter since the trading deadline, so Bama to Bayou.
- 14:58Speaker 1: He can't get his own shot. He's an athlete. They
- 15:00Speaker 1: don't have any closers now because of the mandates lifted
- 15:03Speaker 1: by the Mayor of New York. I get Kyrie and
- 15:05Speaker 1: Kevin Durant, arguably the best small closer and big closure sport.
- 15:09Speaker 1: I don't love their team. I don't love their chemistry.
- 15:13Speaker 1: We all know how the playoffs were. Closers win, so
- 15:17Speaker 1: ambat and hardened. I get a perimeter closer and maybe
- 15:20Speaker 1: the best big closer in the sport. They're good. I
- 15:23Speaker 1: have my questions about Boston. Tatums a closer. Jalen Brown's
- 15:26Speaker 1: an athlete, He's a score, He's not a closer. So
- 15:30Speaker 1: last year is a great example of we thought Milwaukee,
- 15:34Speaker 1: we really liked all of us, liked them for about
- 15:36Speaker 1: three years, and we kept being disappointed. What happened? Oh
- 15:40Speaker 1: j honest in the finals hit fifteen and seventeen free throws.
- 15:43Speaker 1: He became a closer, and Middleton had a forty point game.
- 15:46Speaker 1: So Chris and Janice both elevated two more consistent closers.
- 15:51Speaker 1: They won the title. Um, I think Miami and Boston
- 15:58Speaker 1: are sucker bets. Listen, I've seen this Boston story, Jason
- 16:02Speaker 1: Jalen and Marcus Spark, Marcus Marr, I've seen it. It
- 16:06Speaker 1: has a ceiling because as good as Jayson Tatum is,
- 16:10Speaker 1: you know, you start doubling him, you trap him, get
- 16:14Speaker 1: the ball out of his hands. They don't have a
- 16:16Speaker 1: consistent other guy. So I think they're red hot. People
- 16:20Speaker 1: fall in love with him. I see a total ceiling. Um,
- 16:24Speaker 1: and the same with Miami. I just don't buy him
- 16:26Speaker 1: at all. I think Butler is alive wire. I think
- 16:29Speaker 1: he's inconsistent with a ball late Um. People confuse athlete
- 16:33Speaker 1: for closer. John Wall was a great athlete, Derrick Rose
- 16:37Speaker 1: was a great athlete. Westbrook was a great athlete. Never
- 16:40Speaker 1: trust him late shot clock, quarter game with a shot.
- 16:44Speaker 1: So you know that's my takeaway. Harden and m bid
- 16:48Speaker 1: just fine. I still think was if they didn't give
- 16:50Speaker 1: up Seth Curry and the deal, I'd like him way more.
- 16:53Speaker 1: I think they need one more. I don't trust Tobias
- 16:56Speaker 1: Harris big spot. I think Curry was a nice rotational piece,
- 16:59Speaker 1: kind of a Hattie Mills ability to just hit a shot. Um.
- 17:04Speaker 1: But I think they're good. I think we have a
- 17:06Speaker 1: history veteran playoff coach, dominant big guard that can score.
- 17:13Speaker 1: That's called the Lakers dynasty. I mean that we've seen that,
- 17:16Speaker 1: like right, like Doc and be Hardened, like we've seen
- 17:21Speaker 1: this for generations. They're gonna win a playoff series. I'll
- 17:24Speaker 1: tell you what the wild card is though with that
- 17:25Speaker 1: team is Maxie. That to me, that will be the
- 17:28Speaker 1: reason they'll get the championship, if he can step up
- 17:30Speaker 1: and be the big three like people keep proclaiming. That
- 17:33Speaker 1: to me is the difference because I've seen hard and
- 17:35Speaker 1: Wilt honestly, like I mean all year, I've seen like
- 17:39Speaker 1: all the players that I could not one of the Sixers,
- 17:42Speaker 1: it was him, and now I like them, Like I
- 17:44Speaker 1: like him on the Sixers and I like watch him
- 17:45Speaker 1: on the Sixers. I think it's well with that team.
- 17:48Speaker 1: But yeah, it's about Maxie, like if Maxie can become again.
- 17:52Speaker 1: He's twenty one years old. But we see flashes, like
- 17:54Speaker 1: we just we talked about Jah. You see these flash
- 17:57Speaker 1: of these kids, these young kids where you can be like,
- 17:59Speaker 1: oh my god, I have ever seen that before. And
- 18:01Speaker 1: I told Chad with Max, I've never seen a player
- 18:03Speaker 1: for the six years like him since a I like
- 18:06Speaker 1: think about how long ago that was and now other
- 18:08Speaker 1: people are seeing it. We saw him put up what
- 18:10Speaker 1: was it, thirty points against the heat by himself when
- 18:13Speaker 1: the when the two big guys sat out. So yeah,
- 18:15Speaker 1: Maxie he might be getting that that reaching that level
- 18:17Speaker 1: right now. Yeah, they're trying, they're struggling to figure out
- 18:20Speaker 1: how to use Tobias Harris um. He's not a great
- 18:23Speaker 1: shot maker. He's a really nice athlete. He should be
- 18:26Speaker 1: a four on a championship team. So he maybe if
- 18:29Speaker 1: Max he's your three, Tobias is your four. That's a
- 18:31Speaker 1: real team. Um, yeah, Max, he's a fascinating player. Like
- 18:35Speaker 1: I didn't know how Heat and Harden would work, but
- 18:38Speaker 1: he is so twitchy and so active, and you know,
- 18:42Speaker 1: Harden has a weird style where he can be hard
- 18:46Speaker 1: to play off of MAXI kind of works with Harden
- 18:50Speaker 1: much quicker than I thought, Like Spencer, Dinwiddie and Luca.
- 18:54Speaker 1: It works much faster than I thought. You mentioned, Uh,
- 18:58Speaker 1: Derrick Rose mentioned Russell Westbrook. So here's a question. I
- 19:02Speaker 1: was asked the other day by my fifteen year old
- 19:05Speaker 1: son and his friends who are all serious, who pets
- 19:08Speaker 1: if you could have prime Westbrook or prime Derrick Rose,
- 19:12Speaker 1: Who do you take? Simon? You can answer, and Colin
- 19:15Speaker 1: will answer. Then I will answer Derek without thinking about it.
- 19:18Speaker 1: Derek was a better shooter, a better athlete, and a
- 19:22Speaker 1: better teammate. Like I'll never forget that clip of the
- 19:24Speaker 1: Austar game where Lebron James is doing them look at
- 19:26Speaker 1: Me kind of dance and Derrick Rows is like looking
- 19:29Speaker 1: at him like this, what is this dude doing? Like
- 19:31Speaker 1: I just I always love Derrick Rows. So I think
- 19:34Speaker 1: we're on the same page. If you never got hurt,
- 19:35Speaker 1: He's arguably one of the best players ever to play.
- 19:38Speaker 1: He also has which Westbrook has never had. He's got
- 19:41Speaker 1: good self awareness, Like he went to New York and
- 19:43Speaker 1: own the fact that, man, my game's changed, it's not
- 19:46Speaker 1: his vertical and was a really nice contributor to them Westbrook.
- 19:50Speaker 1: Still he still lives in this weird parallel universe where
- 19:56Speaker 1: he sees himself as a top ten player in the
- 19:58Speaker 1: league and like, dude, it's over. Like Mellow struggled with
- 20:02Speaker 1: that and then came to terms, Mello has been good
- 20:04Speaker 1: for the Lakers off the bench. Mellow came to terms
- 20:06Speaker 1: with I'm a bench guy. Um. Derrick Rose knew what
- 20:11Speaker 1: he was and what he wasn't. His issue was he
- 20:13Speaker 1: had a weird rotation on his jumper. He just he
- 20:17Speaker 1: didn't it just didn't have a great jump shot like
- 20:20Speaker 1: listen man, he had all the other tools. He just did.
- 20:24Speaker 1: He wasn't a great pure shooter. Wall in Westbrook aren't either.
- 20:27Speaker 1: They think they are. Like Rose knew he wasn't. He
- 20:31Speaker 1: would rather score at the hoop. And because he's thin,
- 20:34Speaker 1: not frail, but thin, you get beat up. So like
- 20:38Speaker 1: I always liked Derrick Rose. I just he had a
- 20:41Speaker 1: flawed jumper and that's Okay, he just did. But he
- 20:46Speaker 1: was also like Derrick Rose in that m VP season,
- 20:50Speaker 1: did everything that Russell Westbrook has never been able to do,
- 20:56Speaker 1: got his teammates involved, made everybody better, took that team
- 21:00Speaker 1: on his back to the conference finals. Like the Westbrook conversation,
- 21:05Speaker 1: I always find it fascinating. You had a segment about
- 21:08Speaker 1: a month ago talking about chemistry, and to me, like
- 21:12Speaker 1: what going back to Embid and Harden, what they did
- 21:16Speaker 1: almost instantly was have chemistry that they needed one game
- 21:21Speaker 1: to prove it. And it's something that Westbrook and Lebron
- 21:24Speaker 1: have not been able to figure out in close to
- 21:27Speaker 1: seventy games. Now, now Westbrook is um You know, people
- 21:31Speaker 1: forget this about Westbrook. U c l A didn't know
- 21:33Speaker 1: what to do with him. They didn't know what to
- 21:35Speaker 1: do with them. They made him a two guard. He
- 21:38Speaker 1: couldn't shoot. He was seeing overwhelmingly as a defensive asset
- 21:43Speaker 1: at U c l A. They didn't And then you
- 21:46Speaker 1: know he went to Oklahoma City and go look at
- 21:49Speaker 1: his early numbers. They weren't quite sure what to do
- 21:51Speaker 1: with him. So he was just so profoundly hyper athletic
- 21:56Speaker 1: that basketball coaches fall in love with that he was
- 21:59Speaker 1: so bring me. I just I never bought into it.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Just John Wall Like, dudes, people can't keep up with you.
- 22:07Speaker 1: Slow down. You know, everybody loved Westbrook's assists. Nobody's ever
- 22:13Speaker 1: thought he's a great passer. He just had the ball
- 22:15Speaker 1: so damn much like Stephon Marbury nine assists. Did you
- 22:20Speaker 1: ever in your life say, oh, he's like magic, he's
- 22:22Speaker 1: a magician? Like I think Kobe Bryant was actually a
- 22:26Speaker 1: really clever passer, but he usually was the best outside
- 22:30Speaker 1: of shack. He was the best shooting option, so why
- 22:33Speaker 1: pass it? But like Westbrook averages more career assist than Kobe,
- 22:37Speaker 1: He's terrible pastor with bad hands. He can't catch well
- 22:41Speaker 1: with Westbrook. Also, what's interesting that there was a transition
- 22:44Speaker 1: where for a while, his motor and his competitiveness was
- 22:49Speaker 1: something that everybody loved about him. And I'm trying to
- 22:52Speaker 1: figure out when did it switch? When did sort of
- 22:56Speaker 1: when when he just became not as effective as a
- 22:58Speaker 1: player that people all sadden were turned off by the
- 23:01Speaker 1: same things that everybody loved. Well, I think when Kevin
- 23:05Speaker 1: Durant left, I think the truth was unveiled. You know,
- 23:08Speaker 1: I think Tyreek Hill with Toua. You know you're gonna
- 23:12Speaker 1: watch that and go wow. I saw Tyreek with Mahomes,
- 23:17Speaker 1: I see Tyreek with ta Oh. All those people on
- 23:22Speaker 1: the fence with Twa are gonna go oh yeah this
- 23:25Speaker 1: It doesn't They're not. They can't go deep as much.
- 23:28Speaker 1: So I just think once Kadi left, the truth came out,
- 23:32Speaker 1: and that the truth is he is a ball usage,
- 23:37Speaker 1: ball centric guard who's not efficient um is dared to shoot.
- 23:42Speaker 1: Most of his assists are simply off ball usage, not
- 23:46Speaker 1: the brilliance of passing or some sort of court vision. Um.
- 23:50Speaker 1: He just has the ball in his hands all the time. Now, Hardened,
- 23:54Speaker 1: interestingly has pivoted and is actually a much better passer
- 23:57Speaker 1: than I think we gave him credit for initially. I
- 23:59Speaker 1: think when he went Brooklyn, I was like, he's kind
- 24:01Speaker 1: of effective at this, He got people involved, didn't get
- 24:04Speaker 1: a lot of credit for it. But I do think
- 24:06Speaker 1: I do think Harden he has kind of pivoted to
- 24:09Speaker 1: a more um a fundamentally better distributor than he was
- 24:13Speaker 1: entering the league. At Arizona State and early in the
- 24:16Speaker 1: league he was just a score. But I think he
- 24:18Speaker 1: has the ability. I think he does have some self awareness.
- 24:20Speaker 1: He knows he's gonna high maintenance. Russell just doesn't get
- 24:24Speaker 1: that he is. But but Harden to me has evolved.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I think he has. I think he's become a better
- 24:29Speaker 1: team player that he gets credit for. If you're just
- 24:31Speaker 1: going to throw away this past season, like do you
- 24:34Speaker 1: look at Lebron is the greatest performer in modern playoffs?
- 24:39Speaker 1: In modern NBA history, like two for us, he is
- 24:43Speaker 1: arguably the greatest. I know people are going all the
- 24:46Speaker 1: time about it, but just going taking it away this
- 24:48Speaker 1: past season, just looking at the playoffs, do you think
- 24:51Speaker 1: he is the greatest modern performer? You know, it's always
- 24:54Speaker 1: been hard because Michael and Kobe had similar games sort
- 24:59Speaker 1: of magic and on. It's like trying to compare coconut
- 25:03Speaker 1: cream pie and brownies. Like they're both good, they're not
- 25:09Speaker 1: really the same thing. I mean, Michael was a score
- 25:12Speaker 1: to a fault. I mean with ghost teammates. Lebron's already magic.
- 25:17Speaker 1: I mean, you're seeing it this year. Lebron is like,
- 25:18Speaker 1: I wanna win the scoring title in my nineteenth year.
- 25:21Speaker 1: The only player that's ever been as good as long
- 25:23Speaker 1: as Lebron is Kareem and in his twentieth year, he
- 25:26Speaker 1: average fourteen a game and looked like an old wheelbarrel
- 25:30Speaker 1: down the floor. Lebron decided this year team stinks, I'm
- 25:34Speaker 1: gonna score eighties. Hurt. I mean, he's had fifty point games,
- 25:38Speaker 1: so Lebron not that he's been hide again. The most
- 25:41Speaker 1: valuable Lebron stat in his career, this is the one
- 25:44Speaker 1: that always jumps out to me. Lebron's junior year in
- 25:47Speaker 1: high school, he scored twenty six a game. His senior
- 25:51Speaker 1: year in high school he scored twenty seven. You and
- 25:54Speaker 1: I know he could have gone from twenty six to
- 25:56Speaker 1: fifty six. That told you everything about Lebron. It's never
- 26:00Speaker 1: been about scoring Lebron James High School twenty seven a game. Really, No,
- 26:05Speaker 1: He's always been about getting people involved. So to me,
- 26:08Speaker 1: he's he's magic. He's just a better athlete than Magic,
- 26:13Speaker 1: who was always a poor defender. I always think the
- 26:16Speaker 1: comparisons with Michael are virtually impossible. He's gonna win the
- 26:19Speaker 1: direct the longevity stuff. Michael was also because Michael had
- 26:24Speaker 1: a brother and Michael had a strong father figure. Michael
- 26:28Speaker 1: was really um was not passive aggressive. Michael was very
- 26:32Speaker 1: confrontational and very physical and very combative. You know, Lebron
- 26:38Speaker 1: was raised primarily by his mom. He didn't have a brother.
- 26:41Speaker 1: They're wrestling downstairs in the basement and and there there's
- 26:46Speaker 1: real value in that. Like I grew up with a sister,
- 26:48Speaker 1: not a brother. So I'm a lover not a fighter.
- 26:51Speaker 1: If you go to my high school, the kids that
- 26:52Speaker 1: were on the wrestling team and the tough guys they
- 26:54Speaker 1: all had brothers, are fought downstairs. They wrestled, they fought
- 26:57Speaker 1: over stuff. So Michael is a different personality, I mean
- 27:01Speaker 1: just genetically. He's much more physical, much tougher, much more aggressive.
- 27:06Speaker 1: You know. Lebron I think is a little bit, a
- 27:09Speaker 1: little more thoughtful, sometimes a little more get other people involved.
- 27:13Speaker 1: I think that's their personalities. And it sounds like I'm
- 27:17Speaker 1: trying to be a therapist here, but that stuff matters.
- 27:20Speaker 1: Like Lebron has really got Magic's personality. He really likes
- 27:24Speaker 1: to be collaborative with people, Like I know, guys in
- 27:27Speaker 1: Lebron circle, he shares the ball, you know, businesses, his
- 27:31Speaker 1: production company, He'll he'll pass the ball and get others involved.
- 27:35Speaker 1: You know, Michael's Michael's into Michael and you know, and
- 27:40Speaker 1: sometimes to a fault. Last question because I know you're
- 27:44Speaker 1: gonna sell the volume for I don't know, a billion dollars.
- 27:47Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sell it. I just sat it last night.
- 27:49Speaker 1: I'm not gonna sell it. No. I like it. I
- 27:52Speaker 1: like control. I don't want to give up to some
- 27:56Speaker 1: hedge fund schmuck. I'm not selling the company. You know what,
- 28:00Speaker 1: I think you're gonna change your mind. I don't know.
- 28:03Speaker 1: I like my team. I don't want to see. Here's
- 28:06Speaker 1: what happens. You sell it and then some guy or
- 28:09Speaker 1: gal come in and they just run rough shot over
- 28:12Speaker 1: all my values and all our teamwork. What if they
- 28:15Speaker 1: don't listen. We sold out almost exactly a year ago,
- 28:20Speaker 1: and you go through a process, you find the right
- 28:23Speaker 1: partner who ultimately you know offers you fair value that
- 28:27Speaker 1: you feel good about what your exit is going to be,
- 28:29Speaker 1: but also who you feel is going to align with
- 28:32Speaker 1: the direction that you want to go. If you want
- 28:33Speaker 1: to keep buying it, and you do that, and if not,
- 28:36Speaker 1: you don't sell it. But someone's gonna put a big
- 28:38Speaker 1: number in front of you, you're gonna sell it, and
- 28:40Speaker 1: that's gonna be the case. Yeah, but there's more that
- 28:44Speaker 1: whole big number thing. I think there's an a lure.
- 28:48Speaker 1: You know what, Chad, I've said this, chase good management,
- 28:51Speaker 1: not money, because there's a sea of money out there.
- 28:54Speaker 1: There's not a lot of great management. Dude. I'm with you.
- 28:58Speaker 1: I am, I am the demon of everything you're. Simon
- 29:02Speaker 1: and I are not for sale. You'll take a check
- 29:05Speaker 1: and across the street for a nail. Simon and I.
- 29:09Speaker 1: You can't buy us because you're true Brits. That's the British,
- 29:14Speaker 1: that's right, Simon and College double Brits. Here we grew up.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Our genetics are based in a pub, shifty food in
- 29:20Speaker 1: a pub, A Northeastern guy with lobster sandwiches. Oh my god.
- 29:26Speaker 1: I am mid Western to my roots, to my core, Midwestern,
- 29:31Speaker 1: solid salt of the earth. Don't give me your British pretense.
- 29:36Speaker 1: Here's my question. Though you've got half a billion dollars
- 29:40Speaker 1: now billion, half a billion, five hundred million. Are you
- 29:44Speaker 1: investing regular mutual fund? Are you investing in some kind
- 29:49Speaker 1: of crypto? Are you investing in a team? You have
- 29:55Speaker 1: to think about it from the perspective of what do
- 29:57Speaker 1: you think will give you the most return over the
- 29:59Speaker 1: next ten years. Fifty million and an indexed fund a
- 30:04Speaker 1: combination of index funds twenty five million in cash four
- 30:09Speaker 1: hundred and twenty five million in team ownership, in which
- 30:12Speaker 1: I have to probably buy a team. Um like an
- 30:16Speaker 1: MLS team. There's no value in being a minority owner
- 30:20Speaker 1: in professional sports. It's the worst investment in the world
- 30:23Speaker 1: because you can't pull the money out and you have
- 30:25Speaker 1: no control. So s million, you know, fifty million and
- 30:30Speaker 1: just the index funds cash on hand. But I would
- 30:33Speaker 1: I would take probably eight percent. And now I couldn't
- 30:37Speaker 1: afford an NFL team, and I couldn't afford an NBA team,
- 30:41Speaker 1: but I probably I would probably try to be a
- 30:43Speaker 1: majority investor in an NHL or MLS team. Both goodbyes.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I like the MLS more because I like soccer more.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I would say college. I go back across the pond,
- 30:52Speaker 1: Premier League. You can easily be an owner of our
- 30:55Speaker 1: Premier League for four hundred million dollars. I'm telling you
- 30:59Speaker 1: they're like lead Unite. There's some rough places over there
- 31:01Speaker 1: you can get on the cheap. My wife asked me
- 31:03Speaker 1: this all the time. She goes, what do you make
- 31:05Speaker 1: of the stock market? You know, it's like thirty three,
- 31:07Speaker 1: And I said, well, look at look at Ukraine and Russia.
- 31:11Speaker 1: You know, look at some of the fundamental changes with
- 31:13Speaker 1: immigration in Europe, in the in the in the you
- 31:16Speaker 1: know the issues they're going through. I said, the wealthiest
- 31:19Speaker 1: people in the world are putting money only in two places,
- 31:22Speaker 1: our stock market and sports teams. You don't know what's
- 31:25Speaker 1: going to happen to governments, but you know the Red
- 31:27Speaker 1: Sox will be in Boston in twenty five years. The
- 31:30Speaker 1: world's wealth has come to our stock market because of
- 31:33Speaker 1: too much international volatility, and the pro teams Liverpool is
- 31:37Speaker 1: going to be there forever. You don't know what's happening
- 31:40Speaker 1: in this world today. So to me, outside of some
- 31:44Speaker 1: cash and some funds, I try to be an investor
- 31:47Speaker 1: in an MLS team. Eight years ago, two teams I
- 31:50Speaker 1: looked at. I talked to one of the owners in
- 31:53Speaker 1: Minnesota and he said, if you're not a majority owner,
- 31:56Speaker 1: it's a vanity play you'll never get. You know, you're
- 31:58Speaker 1: buying it for your kids in thirty years. And I
- 32:01Speaker 1: didn't think that was I don't understand like the stuff
- 32:03Speaker 1: I invest in, like real estate, I gotta play with
- 32:06Speaker 1: the stock market I get to play with. I don't
- 32:08Speaker 1: want to invest in stuff if I can't play with it,
- 32:11Speaker 1: and that's no fun, right. I'm with you, man. I
- 32:14Speaker 1: think that was a good answer, Colin. I like it.
- 32:16Speaker 1: I can't wait to find out what happens when you
- 32:18Speaker 1: turned down half a billion dollars for the Volume because
- 32:22Speaker 1: because because you know what you're you're just a guy
- 32:25Speaker 1: with British roots who just wants to continue to grow
- 32:27Speaker 1: your team. I get it. That's totally cool and we're listen.
- 32:31Speaker 1: We're honored to be a part of it. Thank you
