Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Welcome to the Wired to Hunt podcast, which is brought
- 0:02Speaker 1: to you by First Light. I'm your guest host, Tony Peterson,
- 0:05Speaker 1: and today I'm joined by my good buddy Clint Campbell,
- 0:09Speaker 1: who is the host of the Truth from the Stand podcast,
- 0:12Speaker 1: a Brazilian jiu jitsu practitioner, badass guitarist, and all around
- 0:17Speaker 1: good dude who kills big public Land bucks. Surprise, surprise,
- 0:29Speaker 1: Mark Kenyon is off today. Now you might think he's
- 0:32Speaker 1: doing something cool with his time, like hunting public Land Bucks,
- 0:36Speaker 1: but our little buddy is actually in recovery. He got
- 0:38Speaker 1: hired to be the keynote speaker at the Flutter Festival,
- 0:42Speaker 1: which you probably think I'm making up, but I'm not.
- 0:45Speaker 1: This event happens down in South Carolina and is a
- 0:48Speaker 1: celebration of butterflies. So in preparation, Mark got a monarch
- 0:53Speaker 1: tattooed on his lower back. I can't remember what you
- 0:56Speaker 1: call a tattoo in that location, uh, but anyway, Mark
- 1:00Speaker 1: got one, and unfortunately he didn't let it. Heal very well,
- 1:04Speaker 1: and he went to a water slide with his kids
- 1:06Speaker 1: and it got infected. So please go to his Instagram
- 1:10Speaker 1: and wish him a speedy recovery.
- 1:12Speaker 2: All right.
- 1:14Speaker 1: Returning to the Wired to Hunt podcast today is Clint Campbell.
- 1:17Speaker 1: Clint is a Pennsylvania resident who spends all fall bow
- 1:21Speaker 1: hunting public land in a bunch of different states, and
- 1:24Speaker 1: he's really good at it. I love talking to him
- 1:27Speaker 1: for a lot of reasons, but a big one is
- 1:28Speaker 1: because his mindset and his approach to hunting goes way
- 1:32Speaker 1: beyond typical advice. This episode won't teach you how to
- 1:35Speaker 1: find a buck's bet or read a rub better. But
- 1:37Speaker 1: if you pay attention to what Clint has to say
- 1:40Speaker 1: and you follow his advice just even a little bit,
- 1:43Speaker 1: you will become a better hunter. I promise you not, Clint.
- 1:51Speaker 1: I can't tell you how good it is to see you,
- 1:52Speaker 1: buddy day Man.
- 1:54Speaker 3: You're looking good, dude, not looking at a day over
- 1:57Speaker 3: fifty three.
- 1:58Speaker 2: And now I'm just kidding, super super man.
- 2:04Speaker 3: I've been good, Man. Been busy this summer, as you know, man,
- 2:08Speaker 3: you know, life just seems it seems like as things go,
- 2:11Speaker 3: it gets busier and busier. You know, I would have
- 2:13Speaker 3: imagined as my daughter got a little older, you're out
- 2:16Speaker 3: of that constant care phase. She's a senior this year.
- 2:19Speaker 3: So we just did our first university visit, So that's wild.
- 2:24Speaker 3: And I thought things would maybe get a little easier,
- 2:26Speaker 3: a little slower whenever that happened, But it just it
- 2:29Speaker 3: gets more and more chaotic, fingers crossed, like I'll be
- 2:32Speaker 3: an empty nester next year, and I'm hoping then, like
- 2:35Speaker 3: maybe things that slept down a little bit.
- 2:37Speaker 1: So did you when you took her to it, because
- 2:41Speaker 1: you just took her to her first college visit just
- 2:43Speaker 1: got back yet? Was it like kind of getting hit
- 2:46Speaker 1: by a freight train realizing that that's like the phase
- 2:49Speaker 1: that's coming now.
- 2:52Speaker 3: I think it happened before we left, to be honest,
- 2:55Speaker 3: like knowing that it was coming over the course of
- 2:57Speaker 3: the summer. I think, truthfully, it was probably more when
- 3:00Speaker 3: we were getting ready to do our family vacation this summer,
- 3:03Speaker 3: because it had dawned on me that this is probably
- 3:07Speaker 3: the last year, maybe next year, just depending on what
- 3:10Speaker 3: her kind of work schedule and you know, when she
- 3:12Speaker 3: has to show up for school and stuff like that,
- 3:16Speaker 3: that this will probably be the last year that we
- 3:18Speaker 3: really take a focused family vacation where we're going to
- 3:20Speaker 3: plan on it with her in mind, you know, knowing
- 3:22Speaker 3: that she'll be with us, you know, next year, you know,
- 3:25Speaker 3: it may not be the case, just depending on what
- 3:27Speaker 3: we have have going on. So it kind of hit
- 3:29Speaker 3: me a little bit earlier. I kind of had to
- 3:33Speaker 3: have that moment where I was sitting by myself and
- 3:37Speaker 3: I was just kind of thinking that I need to
- 3:44Speaker 3: you know, as funny as this in cliches this sounds,
- 3:46Speaker 3: but I need to get okay with letting go and
- 3:50Speaker 3: that I've done my part and that she's, you know,
- 3:54Speaker 3: for lack of a better way to say it, she's
- 3:56Speaker 3: been a good soldier, and you know, now I need
- 3:59Speaker 3: to let her kind of go out and do her
- 4:01Speaker 3: do her thing right. And so I need to change
- 4:04Speaker 3: my perspective as her dad about what she needs from
- 4:08Speaker 3: me as opposed to what I can you know, what
- 4:11Speaker 3: I can do for her, right, it's what now? How
- 4:13Speaker 3: can I support her in helping her make those decisions? Not?
- 4:16Speaker 3: You know, And she and I have had that conversation
- 4:18Speaker 3: where I'm like, you're at a at a point in
- 4:20Speaker 3: your life where you know I can't do everything for
- 4:23Speaker 3: you anymore, and I can't fix wrongs as many wrongs
- 4:26Speaker 3: for you anymore as I used to be able to,
- 4:28Speaker 3: because you know, you make mistakes now at this point,
- 4:30Speaker 3: I was like, and they're a little bit more I
- 4:31Speaker 3: don't want to say detrimental, but they're a little bit
- 4:33Speaker 3: more consequences associated with some things, you know. And so
- 4:37Speaker 3: it just is a different it's a different way to
- 4:40Speaker 3: have to think about it. And so I've tried to
- 4:42Speaker 3: just more so focus on, you know, what does she
- 4:45Speaker 3: need from me to help her make those decisions and
- 4:47Speaker 3: make sure she knows I'm a partner with her and
- 4:50Speaker 3: all this as much as she wants me to be,
- 4:53Speaker 3: and I'm her biggest fan, you know. And so I
- 4:56Speaker 3: was like, I was like, and that's hard because I
- 4:58Speaker 3: as the dad. It's like I just want to pick
- 4:59Speaker 3: her up, you know, and carry her around still, you know.
- 5:02Speaker 3: So right, but that is that ship has sailed, And
- 5:04Speaker 3: so I think it's just a little bit of a
- 5:06Speaker 3: mindset shift, man, where you have to you know, the
- 5:08Speaker 3: reality is different, and so I have to live in
- 5:10Speaker 3: the reality of it and not in the not in
- 5:13Speaker 3: the what I wish it were still, you know, And
- 5:15Speaker 3: I think that's sometimes the hardest.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Part, right, you know.
- 5:18Speaker 1: I it hit me very very recently, you know, my
- 5:21Speaker 1: daughters are they just started eighth grade, and so I
- 5:25Speaker 1: wrote a piece earlier this week that'll drop any day now,
- 5:28Speaker 1: might be out by the tennis podcast is out for
- 5:31Speaker 1: The Mediator's site about you know, three non hunting decisions
- 5:34Speaker 1: I made in my life that made me a lot
- 5:37Speaker 1: better deer hunter.
- 5:39Speaker 2: And the third one was having kids. And you know, I.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Thought about it from the perspective of, you know, all
- 5:47Speaker 1: the young fellows out there listening to this, maybe some
- 5:49Speaker 1: young women.
- 5:50Speaker 2: I don't know how many young women we have listened
- 5:51Speaker 2: to this podcast, Probably a few.
- 5:53Speaker 1: But if you're young and you're listening to this and
- 5:55Speaker 1: you're at that stage where you might be starting a family,
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know, at some point in the next few years,
- 6:00Speaker 1: you know, a lot of the fear is like your
- 6:02Speaker 1: your time in the field's going to go away, right Like,
- 6:04Speaker 1: if I have a kid, I'm not going to be
- 6:05Speaker 1: able to haunt nearly as much. And like, you know,
- 6:08Speaker 1: it's like a real kind of it's like selfish, but
- 6:10Speaker 1: it's just very real, right, Like it's the same thing
- 6:12Speaker 1: like how can I afford having a kid? Like that's
- 6:13Speaker 1: a big thing that people deal with, and then all
- 6:16Speaker 1: of a sudden you just figure it out, you know,
- 6:18Speaker 1: But I keep thinking about that where finding out I
- 6:21Speaker 1: was going to have two kids at the same time,
- 6:23Speaker 1: I'm like, I'm never going to have any time out there.
- 6:26Speaker 1: And as soon as we had the girls, and you know,
- 6:29Speaker 1: the next the first season, real season I had because
- 6:31Speaker 1: they were born late in and they were born in December,
- 6:34Speaker 1: so the season was about over. But that following September,
- 6:38Speaker 1: you know, I remember having like a lot of anxiety
- 6:40Speaker 1: and being like, man.
- 6:41Speaker 2: I have really short out of state trips.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And at that point, you know, I was entirely a
- 6:46Speaker 1: freelance writer for magazines and websites and whatever, so I
- 6:49Speaker 1: was like, I got to kill a lot of shit
- 6:52Speaker 1: and I got to produce a lot of stuff I
- 6:53Speaker 1: just do.
- 6:55Speaker 2: And I remember being like, so, you know.
- 6:59Speaker 1: Kind of spun up at that, but also went out
- 7:02Speaker 1: on my first trip out to North Akota, only had
- 7:04Speaker 1: four days, killed a buck in the last like fifteen minutes,
- 7:07Speaker 1: and just like realizing, all, right, like this is possible,
- 7:10Speaker 1: and I had you know, you don't know it at
- 7:13Speaker 1: the time, right, but I was like shifting into this
- 7:15Speaker 1: like scout with real intention, like hunt with real intention.
- 7:20Speaker 1: Like I didn't have the time to just be like
- 7:22Speaker 1: I'm going to take a total flyer on this spot.
- 7:24Speaker 1: Or that spot, like I felt the like the pressure
- 7:27Speaker 1: to do things that were going to benefit me, like
- 7:31Speaker 1: not just like follow whatever balloon was blowing down the
- 7:34Speaker 1: alley and chase it.
- 7:35Speaker 2: For a while.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It was like you got to you have to like
- 7:37Speaker 1: work at this. And it really kind of changed my
- 7:41Speaker 1: entire mindset because that first season I went on a
- 7:44Speaker 1: tear and I was like, man, I killed bucks everywhere
- 7:48Speaker 1: I went. Just had one of those seasons, and it
- 7:50Speaker 1: was like part of it. I think I can give
- 7:52Speaker 1: credit to the fact that just literally having a family
- 7:57Speaker 1: changed how I viewed my free time and how I
- 8:01Speaker 1: had my free time to use.
- 8:03Speaker 2: And it's like a weird thing, you know.
- 8:05Speaker 1: I mean a lot of people are listening to this
- 8:06Speaker 1: who probably don't have a family or whatever they're gonna
- 8:09Speaker 1: it's probably like an unrelatable thing. But the thing that
- 8:12Speaker 1: I took away from that is, you know, you don't
- 8:15Speaker 1: have to go have some kids to have a to
- 8:17Speaker 1: be a better hunter. But doing something that allows you
- 8:21Speaker 1: to adopt that mindset of do this with intention and
- 8:26Speaker 1: you will just be better off has like it's fed
- 8:28Speaker 1: so much in my life deer hunting and not deer
- 8:31Speaker 1: hunting since then, and I know, you know, you're you're.
- 8:34Speaker 2: A busy guy.
- 8:35Speaker 1: You have a full time job, you're running troops from
- 8:37Speaker 1: a stamp podcast, You're rolling in BJJ like crazy, You're
- 8:40Speaker 1: doing a lot of shit.
- 8:42Speaker 2: I know that you sort of have that mindset too. Yeah.
- 8:45Speaker 3: I mean I think when you have whether it's kids,
- 8:51Speaker 3: like you said, you know, not advocating for people that
- 8:53Speaker 3: go right, don't have kids to become a better hunter,
- 8:56Speaker 3: but I think when you have things that vie for
- 8:58Speaker 3: your time outside of hunt, you know, or outside of anything,
- 9:02Speaker 3: doesn't matter what it is, if it's hunting, the thing
- 9:04Speaker 3: you're super into, if it's playing tiddley links, like, whatever
- 9:07Speaker 3: it is is your passion. Right, when you have something
- 9:11Speaker 3: that happens to you or you know that that kind
- 9:16Speaker 3: of comes into your life, it can be viewed in
- 9:19Speaker 3: one of two ways. And the way you view it
- 9:21Speaker 3: is really going to be what kind of determines how
- 9:24Speaker 3: you how you approach you know, or whether you find
- 9:26Speaker 3: success or whether you find failure, whatever the case is.
- 9:28Speaker 3: And that is if you see it as a a detriment, right,
- 9:33Speaker 3: like this is the thing that's going to take away
- 9:34Speaker 3: from Right, is one way that you can look at it.
- 9:37Speaker 3: And if that's the case. I mean, I'm gonna have
- 9:38Speaker 3: less time to hunt, and I'm not going to be
- 9:40Speaker 3: able to do all the work I want to do,
- 9:41Speaker 3: and I'm not going to probably be as good as
- 9:43Speaker 3: I want to be. And you know, those are a
- 9:44Speaker 3: bunch of reasons, right or excuses maybe, or you can
- 9:48Speaker 3: look at it as it really just put a finer
- 9:51Speaker 3: point on the things that you need to focus on, right,
- 9:54Speaker 3: And and so you kind of go through this evaluation
- 9:57Speaker 3: process of what do I What am I doing that
- 10:00Speaker 3: I absolutely need? And what are the things that I'm
- 10:02Speaker 3: doing that are actually just maybe I enjoy doing them,
- 10:05Speaker 3: but they're not of a use to me, right, that
- 10:08Speaker 3: they're not things that I'm actually using, Right, And I
- 10:11Speaker 3: think you kind of go through that inventory, not just
- 10:13Speaker 3: in honey, but I think you go through that inventory
- 10:15Speaker 3: just in general. I mean, I'll be real honest. When
- 10:18Speaker 3: we had our daughter, there were friends I was just like,
- 10:21Speaker 3: not in a bad way, not that they weren't of
- 10:23Speaker 3: use to me, but it was just this isn't going
- 10:25Speaker 3: to serve me the way this relationship used to serve
- 10:28Speaker 3: my life any longer, right, And so it's actually going
- 10:31Speaker 3: to be a net negative for me. And if it's
- 10:34Speaker 3: a net negative for me, then it's a net negative
- 10:35Speaker 3: for my family, and I can't have it right. And
- 10:37Speaker 3: so that's a really kind of that's a very kind
- 10:39Speaker 3: of like mean way that I had to look at
- 10:41Speaker 3: it to a degree, right, But if you let it,
- 10:46Speaker 3: it really kind of sharpens you, because at least for me,
- 10:50Speaker 3: you know, I had that, you know, with with my daughter.
- 10:53Speaker 3: But then when I added in and I've talked about this,
- 10:55Speaker 3: when I added in jiu jitsu, that was another thing
- 10:58Speaker 3: that was kind of vying for my time. Love jiu jitsu,
- 11:00Speaker 3: like hunting in jiu jitsu are like my my favorite
- 11:03Speaker 3: things to do. You know. When I was a kid
- 11:05Speaker 3: growing up, the three things I loved to do was
- 11:08Speaker 3: play music, hunt, and wrestle. And I pretty much do
- 11:11Speaker 3: all three of those things pretty much every day something
- 11:13Speaker 3: related to all three of those things every day still,
- 11:16Speaker 3: you know. And so it was hard for me to say, like,
- 11:18Speaker 3: I'm going to give up this time to hunt in
- 11:20Speaker 3: order to do jiu jitsu or vice versa. And so
- 11:22Speaker 3: what I really had to do to get the same
- 11:25Speaker 3: type of fulfillment out of hunting that I wanted to
- 11:27Speaker 3: get out of it, is that I had to be
- 11:29Speaker 3: super intentional whenever I was in the woods. And part
- 11:32Speaker 3: of that lesson I learned on the jiu jitsu mats,
- 11:34Speaker 3: because you hit a certain point you know, and whatever
- 11:37Speaker 3: it is, and jiu jitsu was just where I really
- 11:39Speaker 3: learned the hard The hard lesson, I guess if you will,
- 11:42Speaker 3: was that you hit a certain point where you kind
- 11:43Speaker 3: of know enough information, and you hit that same point
- 11:46Speaker 3: in hunting where you know, you know how to read
- 11:49Speaker 3: rubs and you know how to you know how to
- 11:51Speaker 3: evaluate a scrape if it's worth hunting or not hunting,
- 11:53Speaker 3: or if it's in the right spot. You know how
- 11:55Speaker 3: to you understand terrain features and topography, and you know
- 11:58Speaker 3: you understand just say, you understand deer hunting in general. Right.
- 12:03Speaker 3: But the difference that takes you from you know, that
- 12:06Speaker 3: place to kind of sharpening yourself is like, how do
- 12:10Speaker 3: you look at things you know with with intention? Right?
- 12:14Speaker 3: And so for me, at least in jiu jitsu, it
- 12:16Speaker 3: was no longer just coming in and doing whatever the
- 12:18Speaker 3: coach was teaching that day. I needed to kind of
- 12:20Speaker 3: take my development in my own hands and come in
- 12:24Speaker 3: every day during a training session and have something specific
- 12:29Speaker 3: I wanted to work on to get better at. And
- 12:31Speaker 3: that was on me to figure out, right. I think
- 12:34Speaker 3: hunting is the same way. It's like you know yourself
- 12:36Speaker 3: better than anybody. What are the things that you need
- 12:39Speaker 3: to continue to work on. Do you need to shoot
- 12:41Speaker 3: your bow more? Do you need to maybe get in
- 12:43Speaker 3: the gym and drop a couple of pounds like so
- 12:44Speaker 3: you feel better? Right? Do you need to, you know,
- 12:48Speaker 3: spend more time map studying, Do you need to spend
- 12:50Speaker 3: a little bit more time with boots on the ground
- 12:52Speaker 3: or whatever it is. But the thing is, you don't
- 12:54Speaker 3: have time to do all of them right, right, So
- 12:57Speaker 3: you have to look at it with intention and go,
- 12:59Speaker 3: what of these things is actually going to serve me best?
- 13:03Speaker 3: And that's where you focus, right. And so I think
- 13:06Speaker 3: when you have added things that come into your life,
- 13:08Speaker 3: whether it's other hobbies, passions, whatever the case is, you
- 13:11Speaker 3: can either let it dilute all the stuff that you're
- 13:13Speaker 3: already doing, or you can let it enhance all the
- 13:16Speaker 3: stuff that you're already doing if you start to understand
- 13:18Speaker 3: and see the through lines of how they all kind
- 13:20Speaker 3: of connect, right, And so I think that that's just
- 13:22Speaker 3: a more positive way to look at it and I
- 13:24Speaker 3: think then you can kind of, for lack of remote
- 13:27Speaker 3: way to put it, you can kind of have your
- 13:28Speaker 3: cake and eat it too if you will.
- 13:29Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, I've started to think about it, you know.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I mean, maybe this is just the age or whatever,
- 13:35Speaker 1: but I just think that mindset matters almost more than anything, right,
- 13:41Speaker 1: And I think we sort of sell this image of
- 13:45Speaker 1: you know, scout this way in the mountains out in
- 13:47Speaker 1: PA and you'll kill public land bucks, or scout this way,
- 13:51Speaker 1: hunt this way in Kansas and you'll arrow a booner
- 13:53Speaker 1: on public land whatever. But really everybody's like on their
- 13:58Speaker 1: own personal journey, and I think that I think that
- 14:02Speaker 1: white tail hunting is really hard for a lot of
- 14:04Speaker 1: people because they don't know what they're trying to get
- 14:06Speaker 1: out of it yet, you know what I mean. Like,
- 14:08Speaker 1: I think they consume a lot of content and think, well,
- 14:11Speaker 1: like I want to kill big Bucks, and that's the
- 14:14Speaker 1: that's the direction I want to go.
- 14:15Speaker 2: And it's like, yeah, that's the direction everybody wants to go.
- 14:17Speaker 1: But really, like you see a lot of people who
- 14:19Speaker 1: get there where they can consistently kill them, and depending
- 14:23Speaker 1: on how they're doing it, a lot of the fire
- 14:25Speaker 1: will burn out pretty quickly because like once you get
- 14:27Speaker 1: it figured out, if that if like your goal is
- 14:29Speaker 1: just that you could just pick up an extra job
- 14:32Speaker 1: and get a great lease and maybe solve your problem right,
- 14:36Speaker 1: like you could you could maybe just do it that way.
- 14:38Speaker 1: And it's like that that to me, like it's not
- 14:41Speaker 1: that that's a bad thing, but that might not be
- 14:44Speaker 1: what you need, Like you might find that that goal
- 14:46Speaker 1: was wrong, like it wasn't.
- 14:48Speaker 2: It was kind of like hollow or whatever. And I
- 14:50Speaker 2: think the more that and more the more that people
- 14:53Speaker 2: do stuff where they're like why am I doing this?
- 14:56Speaker 2: Like what's you know, like you want to get in shape?
- 14:59Speaker 2: Why you want to look good naked? Great?
- 15:01Speaker 1: Like you want like okay, great, that's like a that's
- 15:04Speaker 1: like a start, Like right, you want to feel better
- 15:07Speaker 1: like you want to you want to like have more
- 15:09Speaker 1: energy when you're out in the woods or playing with
- 15:11Speaker 1: your kids, or you know, not be forced.
- 15:14Speaker 2: To medically retire when you're late fifties because you can't
- 15:17Speaker 2: do something or whatever, like what is it? Like?
- 15:19Speaker 1: The I think the more that we like focus on
- 15:21Speaker 1: that stuff because I really learned this lesson. I know
- 15:24Speaker 1: people get sick of hearing about you know, like fitness
- 15:27Speaker 1: in the outdoors or whatever. But when I started running
- 15:29Speaker 1: a lot, I did it because I could get a
- 15:33Speaker 1: lot of exercise in a short amount of time, essentially,
- 15:36Speaker 1: like you just gotta get your ass moving. What I
- 15:39Speaker 1: didn't realize what was that mental health wise? There was
- 15:43Speaker 1: literally nothing better for me to do. Like literally, if
- 15:46Speaker 1: I was having a bad day whatever for whatever reason,
- 15:49Speaker 1: if I force myself to go do that, I will
- 15:51Speaker 1: come out the other side and feel better. If I
- 15:54Speaker 1: start my day with that shit, my whole day will
- 15:58Speaker 1: probably be more smooth and I'll be less agitated and whatever.
- 16:02Speaker 2: It's like.
- 16:03Speaker 1: So when when we talk about all of this stuff,
- 16:07Speaker 1: and you talk about your music and you're you know,
- 16:09Speaker 1: rolling at the gym and all this stuff, there's like
- 16:13Speaker 1: a surface level look at it, kind of like the
- 16:16Speaker 1: surface level look of a lot of outdoor content is
- 16:18Speaker 1: just kill big bucks. But underneath it are all these
- 16:21Speaker 1: different pathways for the individual to follow to find their way.
- 16:25Speaker 1: And I love it seeing people who are confident enough
- 16:29Speaker 1: to follow those, Like I've been paying attention and you've
- 16:30Speaker 1: been shooting a trad bow a lot, which most people
- 16:34Speaker 1: modern hunters would look at this and go that is
- 16:37Speaker 1: the wrong direction. You should be going to a crossbow
- 16:40Speaker 1: because they're easier, right, But you're not doing that. And
- 16:43Speaker 1: it's because it's like you're just confident in a personal
- 16:46Speaker 1: journey now and you're like, well, this is for me
- 16:49Speaker 1: in my mindset, is just like I just need to
- 16:50Speaker 1: do this because of X, Y and Z, and it's
- 16:52Speaker 1: just like I think seeing that and seeing somebody like
- 16:55Speaker 1: you is just really important.
- 16:57Speaker 3: Yeah. I think speaking of the tret the trad bow,
- 17:01Speaker 3: you know that that was really one of those things
- 17:04Speaker 3: that it really just is giving me or I believe
- 17:09Speaker 3: that it will give me the type of experience that
- 17:11Speaker 3: have always kind of been looking for, right, because I
- 17:13Speaker 3: think a lot of people get caught up in chasing
- 17:15Speaker 3: an experience someone else has probably previously laid out for them,
- 17:19Speaker 3: you know, or that they've seen it somewhere, and that's fine.
- 17:21Speaker 3: I think somewhere times it gets get started, right. You
- 17:23Speaker 3: see it all the time in music. You'll see bands
- 17:26Speaker 3: that you know, you see them before they're anybody, and
- 17:28Speaker 3: you're like, oh, they kind of sound like Zeppelin, or
- 17:30Speaker 3: they kind of sound like this band, Like you can
- 17:32Speaker 3: clearly hear their influences, right, But as they go, if
- 17:35Speaker 3: they're talented, right, and they're decent songwriters and they own
- 17:38Speaker 3: their craft. All of a sudden you start to see
- 17:41Speaker 3: less and less of those influences and more and more
- 17:44Speaker 3: of who they are comes out, because one they just
- 17:47Speaker 3: get better at their craft, and two they start to
- 17:49Speaker 3: get the confidence to express themselves. Right, I don't think
- 17:53Speaker 3: that's really all that different than hunting at least right.
- 17:56Speaker 3: So for me, it was, you know, getting better at
- 17:59Speaker 3: my craft. And I kind of for a long time
- 18:01Speaker 3: thought there was a version of me that I was
- 18:03Speaker 3: kind of chasing to a degree, and it was probably
- 18:06Speaker 3: someone else's version. It was probably influenced by other guys
- 18:08Speaker 3: that I've probably had on my show that I was like,
- 18:11Speaker 3: this guy's a great hunter. I'd love to be able
- 18:12Speaker 3: to hunt like this guy, or do things like this
- 18:14Speaker 3: guy does. Or I want to be Andy May when
- 18:15Speaker 3: I grow up, you know what I mean, Like whatever
- 18:18Speaker 3: the case is, you know. And then as I kind
- 18:20Speaker 3: of went, you hone your craft, I honed mine, and
- 18:25Speaker 3: you start to care less about what other people's journeys
- 18:27Speaker 3: are and realize that they're not necessarily right for you,
- 18:31Speaker 3: and you start to think about, well, what is it
- 18:34Speaker 3: I want? Right, And then you become confident enough to
- 18:36Speaker 3: just go this is the thing that I want, right,
- 18:39Speaker 3: and so you go after it right. And so for me,
- 18:40Speaker 3: that's kind of what the trad bow has been. It's
- 18:42Speaker 3: like I want a certain type of experience and I
- 18:44Speaker 3: don't really I get it. I'm gonna have to probably
- 18:46Speaker 3: watch a big deer walk out of my life at
- 18:47Speaker 3: some point with it. I'm okay with that, right. It's
- 18:51Speaker 3: whether I kill that deer or not. A big deer
- 18:53Speaker 3: is not going to define me. And three people are
- 18:55Speaker 3: going to know about it. That's about it, you know.
- 18:57Speaker 3: So it'll be like you, my buddy Chad and you know,
- 19:00Speaker 3: my buddy Wilson are probably like the only guys that
- 19:02Speaker 3: really talk to me about any year that I killed
- 19:05Speaker 3: past the week that I killed it, you know. And
- 19:09Speaker 3: so you know, that's what I'm really kind of after.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Like when you said, you know, you were talking a
- 19:13Speaker 3: little bit about you know why people what your what
- 19:17Speaker 3: your why is, and I thought that was really interesting
- 19:19Speaker 3: because the trad bow is really, you know, is an
- 19:23Speaker 3: expression of the why to a degree, but it's not
- 19:26Speaker 3: the why, you know. And I had this kind of
- 19:29Speaker 3: internal battle, I guess if you will, whether maybe it
- 19:34Speaker 3: was two years ago or something like that. It was
- 19:36Speaker 3: probably about the same time that I started training in
- 19:40Speaker 3: jiu jitsu. And you know, someone asked me at one
- 19:43Speaker 3: point why I was, you know, why I was doing that,
- 19:46Speaker 3: you know, or why I would want to do that.
- 19:47Speaker 3: I love grappling, number one, but you know, at forty
- 19:51Speaker 3: some odd years old, why would I start doing that
- 19:53Speaker 3: and put my body through that? And they were like,
- 19:55Speaker 3: and then we started talking about bow hunting. They were like, man,
- 19:58Speaker 3: that's kind of hard. Then we started talking about a
- 19:59Speaker 3: traditional bow and that's even harder. They're like, why do
- 20:01Speaker 3: you pick the like the hardest possible things to deal?
- 20:04Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:04Speaker 3: Like? And I started thinking about it. I was like, well,
- 20:06Speaker 3: maybe I just like things that are really hard, right,
- 20:09Speaker 3: Maybe I like the challenge. And I was like, I do.
- 20:14Speaker 3: I was like, but that's not If that were the case.
- 20:17Speaker 3: Once I met the challenge, then I wouldn't be interested
- 20:19Speaker 3: in anymore, right, because that's I like things that are
- 20:22Speaker 3: kind of continual, right, And so you know, what I
- 20:26Speaker 3: landed on and what I realized was is that and
- 20:28Speaker 3: this has been all my life because I started looking back,
- 20:30Speaker 3: like even when I was a kid and stuff like that,
- 20:32Speaker 3: and music was another example, like music's really hard, Like
- 20:35Speaker 3: that's what I did for a living for a while,
- 20:36Speaker 3: So why would you choose that as a profession at
- 20:38Speaker 3: some point? Right? Why would you choose to be an
- 20:40Speaker 3: archery hunter of all things?
- 20:42Speaker 2: Right?
- 20:44Speaker 3: And what I kind of landed on was that the
- 20:48Speaker 3: things that really motivate me or the things that I
- 20:50Speaker 3: feel like that are like those things that are like
- 20:52Speaker 3: buried in you that you can't explain, is that I
- 20:57Speaker 3: like things and seek things that have no possibility of
- 21:00Speaker 3: mastery ever, like you, And if anybody tells you they're
- 21:04Speaker 3: a master of it, you will one percent know that
- 21:06Speaker 3: they're full of shit, because there's it's just not possible. Right,
- 21:11Speaker 3: And so it's a kind of a weird way to
- 21:14Speaker 3: where everyone's always kind of like the same, Like there's
- 21:19Speaker 3: a hierarchy like in that, like you know a good
- 21:20Speaker 3: hunter from like someone who's maybe not as accomplished or whatever,
- 21:23Speaker 3: but does doesn't mean that person can't be. Right, you
- 21:27Speaker 3: know someone who's really good at jiu jitsu by your
- 21:29Speaker 3: rank of your belt, right, and that really just means
- 21:31Speaker 3: that person spent more time, right, But it doesn't mean
- 21:34Speaker 3: the person who's a white belt that just started yesterday
- 21:36Speaker 3: can't be a black belt or a fifty degree black
- 21:38Speaker 3: belt or whatever. Right just because someone just started playing
- 21:41Speaker 3: music today doesn't mean they're not going to be the
- 21:44Speaker 3: next Jimmy Page or the next John Lennon. They're not today,
- 21:48Speaker 3: but they could be, right, And so it's all those
- 21:51Speaker 3: things that you know, there's no possibility of mastery. It's
- 21:54Speaker 3: all endless, it's open ended, and it's really just about
- 21:57Speaker 3: your journey. And so that's what I kind of learned.
- 22:01Speaker 3: And I think that all the different things that I'm
- 22:02Speaker 3: involved in, you know, over time has kind of taught
- 22:05Speaker 3: me that. And that's that's ultimately, you know, where my
- 22:08Speaker 3: why kind of stems from is having something that there's
- 22:11Speaker 3: no possibility in mastery. So I'll never run out of
- 22:13Speaker 3: intrigue until I'm you know, in the ground, you know, hopefully.
- 22:18Speaker 1: I love I love how you frame that up, because
- 22:22Speaker 1: I so my daughters and I went down this weird
- 22:26Speaker 1: rabbit hole last winter of watching all these documentaries on
- 22:29Speaker 1: like mountain climbers and rock climbing and squirrel suit jumpers
- 22:32Speaker 1: and all these guys like crazy adrenaline sports shit right
- 22:35Speaker 1: like free solo Alex Hanold type stuff, and I just
- 22:38Speaker 1: the other night when I was running, I was listening
- 22:40Speaker 1: to Alex Hanold, who is the first dude to climb
- 22:43Speaker 1: l CAP with no safety equipment, which is crazy, crazy
- 22:47Speaker 1: three thousand feet straight up of just death after like
- 22:51Speaker 1: the first minute, it's just death, no matter what if
- 22:53Speaker 1: you screw up. Anyway, he was on Huberman's podcast, and
- 22:58Speaker 1: Huberman asked him a lot of questions about like, you know,
- 23:02Speaker 1: when you do something like that and you accomplish it,
- 23:06Speaker 1: like how do you find the next thing? And he
- 23:08Speaker 1: was like, there's always a whole bunch of the next
- 23:11Speaker 1: things like rattling around in my brain. It's not like
- 23:14Speaker 1: he's like, I have to do l CAP, that's it.
- 23:18Speaker 1: And then once I'm done, I start over and I
- 23:20Speaker 1: start thinking about this thing he's like. And then he
- 23:22Speaker 1: started explaining about like the little day climbs him and
- 23:24Speaker 1: his wife would do, and like, you know, there's this
- 23:27Speaker 1: like one move I couldn't master, this one spot where
- 23:29Speaker 1: it was like kicking my ass, And I think about
- 23:32Speaker 1: that so much, and I had I was just down
- 23:34Speaker 1: in Nebraska a little bit ago, hanging a bunch of
- 23:37Speaker 1: stands and putting up blinds for this hunt. We're doing
- 23:40Speaker 1: during the rut here with Steve and my cameraman is
- 23:44Speaker 1: a mountain climber, and so I never worked with the
- 23:47Speaker 1: guy before I met him. Super good shape, and I
- 23:49Speaker 1: looked at I'm like, what do you do? Like you
- 23:51Speaker 1: can just look at him and just tell he's like
- 23:52Speaker 1: doing something like and he's.
- 23:55Speaker 2: Like, oh, I just loved a rock climb.
- 23:56Speaker 1: And so I asked him so many questions and he
- 24:02Speaker 1: knew nothing about deer hunting. Great guy knew nothing. He's
- 24:06Speaker 1: from Idaho. He literally asked me, uh. At one point,
- 24:10Speaker 1: I put up a blind and he said, do you
- 24:11Speaker 1: have to get out of the blind to shootingmorer? Can
- 24:13Speaker 1: you stay in it? Like That's that was his pace
- 24:16Speaker 1: level of you know, deer hunting. He just doesn't know, right,
- 24:18Speaker 1: He just started. He hunted elk last year for the
- 24:20Speaker 1: first time because he started filming with us, and so
- 24:23Speaker 1: he he doesn't come to the conversation knowing anything about
- 24:27Speaker 1: what we do. And as I talked to him more
- 24:30Speaker 1: and more about his favorite climbs and the places he's
- 24:32Speaker 1: gone and the like close calls and all that shit,
- 24:35Speaker 1: I was like, this is just bow hunting on a
- 24:37Speaker 1: vertical cliff like that. It was the same kind of
- 24:40Speaker 1: thing where he was like, you know, he explained to
- 24:43Speaker 1: me because we started talking about free solo, and I
- 24:45Speaker 1: was like, it had never occurred to me how much
- 24:50Speaker 1: Alex had rehearsed and worked through like individual moves and
- 24:54Speaker 1: how many times he had climbed it with gear to
- 24:57Speaker 1: know every part. Like obviously when you hear that on
- 25:00Speaker 1: the outside and now you're like, oh, yeah, duh, you're
- 25:01Speaker 1: not going to just go up there blind. But it's
- 25:04Speaker 1: like a decade's long process, or it maybe a decade
- 25:07Speaker 1: or whatever. And I asked this guy, I was like,
- 25:09Speaker 1: do you have stuff like that where it's like it's
- 25:11Speaker 1: taking you ten years to you know, summit certain spots whatever.
- 25:15Speaker 2: And he's like, yeah, absolutely.
- 25:16Speaker 1: He's like, you fall all the time, and if you
- 25:19Speaker 1: fall one time, it's not a success. You have to
- 25:22Speaker 1: go up there and do this without falling. And he's like,
- 25:25Speaker 1: some of the things that I do take me ten
- 25:28Speaker 1: years to finish, but I'm always working on that and
- 25:31Speaker 1: something else and something else and some other move and
- 25:34Speaker 1: bouldering this way or whatever. And it's like it was
- 25:37Speaker 1: so fascinating to me because you would look at those worlds,
- 25:40Speaker 1: especially if you looked at like a you know, like
- 25:43Speaker 1: a TV hunt for white tails in like a typical
- 25:46Speaker 1: outfitted situation, you know, like the kind of hunt that
- 25:49Speaker 1: like the Western hunters would you know, tear us to
- 25:52Speaker 1: shreds over right, like the one they like to point
- 25:54Speaker 1: out where it's like that's not hunting, right. If you
- 25:57Speaker 1: look at that world especially, you'd be like, man, there's
- 26:01Speaker 1: no connection. There's no touch point between this and you know,
- 26:05Speaker 1: going up El Cap. But it's a mindset thing, and
- 26:09Speaker 1: it's like it's you know that kind of thing is like, yeah,
- 26:12Speaker 1: a lot of people have done this, right, Like a
- 26:14Speaker 1: lot of people have done this route in that route
- 26:15Speaker 1: and whatever, but it doesn't matter. Like a lot of
- 26:17Speaker 1: people have gone out into the woods in Pennsylvania and
- 26:19Speaker 1: killed one hundred and forty inches. That doesn't change your
- 26:22Speaker 1: arc at all. Like you still have to follow your
- 26:25Speaker 1: own path.
- 26:36Speaker 3: Yeah, you got to follow your own path. And and
- 26:40Speaker 3: I think at the outset you have to have an
- 26:43Speaker 3: understanding of how long something's going to take, or that
- 26:47Speaker 3: it that it takes time. I think that's the one
- 26:50Speaker 3: thing that doesn't matter what it's in, whether it's hunting
- 26:53Speaker 3: or anything else, is that we just don't afford ourselves
- 26:55Speaker 3: any time any longer. Everything is such a microwave situation.
- 27:00Speaker 3: You know. You take opening weekend of football just occurred, right,
- 27:04Speaker 3: and you see rookie quarterbacks, right, for example, the expectations
- 27:09Speaker 3: that they just come in and set the whirl on fire.
- 27:12Speaker 3: You know, from from day one, when if you go
- 27:16Speaker 3: ten years ago or fifteen years ago, or whatever the
- 27:18Speaker 3: case was, there was a concept of bringing a rookie
- 27:21Speaker 3: quarterback along. Right, there's an understanding that it takes time
- 27:25Speaker 3: to learn certain nuances of this game versus the game
- 27:29Speaker 3: that he played in college. Right, It's the same thing,
- 27:32Speaker 3: you know, whether you're talking bow hunting or whether you're
- 27:34Speaker 3: talking jiu jitsu, or whether you're talking you know, free
- 27:38Speaker 3: soloing or whatever the case is. Nobody starts, you know,
- 27:42Speaker 3: especially in those types of endeavors. You know, and unless
- 27:46Speaker 3: you live on a managed property, if you do good,
- 27:50Speaker 3: you know, good on you. I'm not not poo pooing that.
- 27:53Speaker 3: But for the public land guys out that are listening,
- 27:57Speaker 3: you know, nobody's starting, you know, like one hundred yards
- 28:02Speaker 3: ahead of you in that sense, right, they might feel
- 28:05Speaker 3: like they are starting ahead of you because maybe they've
- 28:07Speaker 3: been doing a little bit longer, and they know a
- 28:08Speaker 3: few more things than you might know, or they you know,
- 28:11Speaker 3: whatever the case is. But everyone's kind of starts at
- 28:14Speaker 3: the bottom rung in that regard. And I think that's
- 28:18Speaker 3: one of the things that always, you know, that I
- 28:20Speaker 3: find fulfilling, at least in bow hunting, is that when
- 28:25Speaker 3: I go out to a piece of public somewhere, and
- 28:26Speaker 3: no matter where it's at, whether it's in my home
- 28:28Speaker 3: state of Pennsylvania or whether I'm traveling to a plane state somewhere,
- 28:31Speaker 3: or you know, Ohio, Iowa, Missouri, like whatever state, it
- 28:37Speaker 3: is the piece of dirt that I'm walking onto. Anybody
- 28:40Speaker 3: who has a tag and is legal with a legal
- 28:43Speaker 3: weapon is starting the same place I'm starting. Like, we're
- 28:46Speaker 3: all doing the same We're all doing the same thing.
- 28:49Speaker 3: The only thing that's going to kind of separate us
- 28:52Speaker 3: is one luck, because that's a big part of it,
- 28:56Speaker 3: you know, in two is your willingness to just deal
- 29:00Speaker 3: with the suck when it comes because it's going to right.
- 29:03Speaker 3: You have some of those gem hunts like I had
- 29:05Speaker 3: in the planes two years ago, where you show up
- 29:07Speaker 3: and you see the deer you want to kill, and
- 29:08Speaker 3: the second day you kill it, you know, but that
- 29:11Speaker 3: was three year. That was the third year two years
- 29:14Speaker 3: of eating a tag before that happened, right, And so
- 29:17Speaker 3: it's all that suck built up of enduring. That was
- 29:20Speaker 3: what led is what led to that. Right. Or if
- 29:24Speaker 3: you're climbing a mountain, right, you're using the gear to
- 29:27Speaker 3: climb so you don't make when you do make mistakes
- 29:29Speaker 3: that you have a safety net so you can learn
- 29:31Speaker 3: from the mistake. Right, And jiu jitsu, you enter tournaments
- 29:34Speaker 3: and you get beaten. When you're you know, you get
- 29:37Speaker 3: a little bit better, you win some tournaments, right, and
- 29:40Speaker 3: so it's all the same, it's all the same process.
- 29:43Speaker 3: But I think the important part of that as you
- 29:44Speaker 3: were kind of you know, talking about the mountain climbing
- 29:47Speaker 3: part of it, and I was kind of thinking, you know,
- 29:52Speaker 3: what is the what is that thing when you have
- 29:54Speaker 3: all these things rattling around in your head of when
- 29:56Speaker 3: you achieve one thing, like where do you go next? Right,
- 29:59Speaker 3: because a lot of people see that achievement is like
- 30:01Speaker 3: the pinnacle, like you you killed the deer you were
- 30:03Speaker 3: after you climb them ount and you wanted to climb,
- 30:05Speaker 3: or you won the tournament you wanted to win, or
- 30:07Speaker 3: whatever the case is. And the thing that I kind
- 30:09Speaker 3: of thought of that was kind of binds it all
- 30:12Speaker 3: together is that in every one of those scenarios, in
- 30:16Speaker 3: a person who's achieving those things at a decent clip
- 30:19Speaker 3: in those areas or whatever area it might be, is
- 30:22Speaker 3: that they're always looking to start over. Like That's actually
- 30:25Speaker 3: the appealing part is the starting it over again, right.
- 30:29Speaker 3: It's not sitting and looking at oh, look at me,
- 30:33Speaker 3: what did I Look what I just did? Right? There's
- 30:35Speaker 3: a little bit of time for that, and a little
- 30:37Speaker 3: bit of time for reflection about what I learned from it.
- 30:39Speaker 3: And sure, maybe you give yourself a pat on the
- 30:42Speaker 3: back and you enjoy the fruits of your labor for
- 30:45Speaker 3: a minute. But most people are always onto, what's the
- 30:49Speaker 3: next thing I want to tackle, you know, And for
- 30:51Speaker 3: a lot of us, it's what's the next new thing
- 30:53Speaker 3: I can tackle? Right, What's the next kind of state
- 30:57Speaker 3: I want to go to. What's the next type of
- 30:58Speaker 3: terrain that I want to hunt in? That's the next
- 31:00Speaker 3: type of habitat I want to visit. What's the next
- 31:03Speaker 3: species I want to chase? What's the next weapon I
- 31:06Speaker 3: want to use? You know, It's like all those variables
- 31:09Speaker 3: of what you kind of start thinking about, and you
- 31:11Speaker 3: just you get more excited of the proposition of things
- 31:14Speaker 3: being new than you do about the goal you just achieved,
- 31:20Speaker 3: because to me, like the exciting stuff is the stuff
- 31:22Speaker 3: you haven't that you don't know yet. It's the stuff
- 31:24Speaker 3: that you're going to figure out and the the way
- 31:27Speaker 3: it's going to test you and test whether or not
- 31:30Speaker 3: you're as good as you think that you are, right,
- 31:32Speaker 3: test the things that you know are they are they
- 31:35Speaker 3: as solid of tools as you think as you think
- 31:38Speaker 3: you have right And a lot of times you get exposed,
- 31:42Speaker 3: you know, and that's a lot of what happens. And honey,
- 31:45Speaker 3: when you go to a new state, or you know,
- 31:46Speaker 3: in jiu jitsu, if you go to a new gym
- 31:48Speaker 3: and you train with guys who have a different style
- 31:49Speaker 3: than you. Just happened to me this weekend in different
- 31:51Speaker 3: style man, and I learned some lessons about where I
- 31:55Speaker 3: have some holes I had need to fill. There was
- 31:57Speaker 3: a large MMA fighter from azerbaj On who was here
- 32:00Speaker 3: to for his fight camp that I learned some lessons from.
- 32:04Speaker 2: You know.
- 32:05Speaker 3: It didn't help that he went like two ten, you know,
- 32:07Speaker 3: and he's got me about about forty pounds, but he
- 32:09Speaker 3: was very skilled and it was a rough round, but
- 32:12Speaker 3: it was a very good experience because it just showed me,
- 32:15Speaker 3: like where where there was opportunity for me to continue
- 32:17Speaker 3: to grow, right, And there's a plenty of I have
- 32:19Speaker 3: plenty of places to grow. But just to kind of
- 32:21Speaker 3: look at that in the hunting sense, you know, when
- 32:23Speaker 3: you go to a new piece of public land, you
- 32:25Speaker 3: get your teeth kicked in, like man, that's like, that's
- 32:27Speaker 3: a great opportunity to figure out like areas that you
- 32:30Speaker 3: can sharpen yourself. Because if you sharpen those areas and
- 32:32Speaker 3: you patch those holes, like how much better are you
- 32:34Speaker 3: going to be?
- 32:35Speaker 2: Right?
- 32:36Speaker 3: And that's ultimately how you level up?
- 32:38Speaker 2: Right.
- 32:38Speaker 3: It is like when you find those deficiencies and you
- 32:40Speaker 3: figure out not always can you fill them, because sometimes
- 32:43Speaker 3: you don't have the capabilities to fill them. But what
- 32:45Speaker 3: you end up learning is how do I work with
- 32:47Speaker 3: that deficiency? What do I need to do to mitigate
- 32:50Speaker 3: the impact of that deficiency if you're not capable of
- 32:53Speaker 3: filling it? Right? And you can probably hear in my voice,
- 32:56Speaker 3: but that's the stuff I get excited about.
- 32:58Speaker 1: Well, I mean, I think, I think what you're saying
- 33:02Speaker 1: in a sort of a roundabout way, and I might
- 33:04Speaker 1: be wrong here, but there's sort of this concept I've
- 33:07Speaker 1: been thinking about a lot with white tail hunting lately,
- 33:10Speaker 1: is you know what what do like the Andy Mays
- 33:15Speaker 1: of the world share, Like what are the people who
- 33:17Speaker 1: are just like really good at it where you're just
- 33:18Speaker 1: like that guy can figure it out anywhere? And one
- 33:21Speaker 1: of the things, you know, I think a lot of
- 33:22Speaker 1: people look at it and like their drive. You know,
- 33:24Speaker 1: they scout constantly, blah blah blah. They're out there all
- 33:26Speaker 1: the time, you know, single minded terminator pursuit. And there's
- 33:29Speaker 1: like a component of that, right, Like they're gonna they're
- 33:32Speaker 1: gonna go more than the average person just they just are.
- 33:35Speaker 1: They're gonna winter scout more, They're gonna just there's gonna
- 33:37Speaker 1: be an extra level of work put into there. But
- 33:40Speaker 1: I think the big differentiator is comfort with failure.
- 33:45Speaker 2: Like I think about this.
- 33:46Speaker 1: I mean, I was having a conversation with this girl
- 33:50Speaker 1: who's writing for us now for the for the Meat
- 33:52Speaker 1: Eater site, and she's she's trying to go kill a
- 33:55Speaker 1: public land buck and so she just ran some stuff
- 33:57Speaker 1: by me and it was like, well, what if this
- 34:00Speaker 1: goes wrong?
- 34:01Speaker 2: And I'm like, well, you have a whole.
- 34:02Speaker 1: Season, like it's probably going to go wrong, you know, like,
- 34:05Speaker 1: well what if they don't come to the beans or
- 34:06Speaker 1: the beans or yellow or blah blah blah.
- 34:08Speaker 2: I'm like, that's just that's just bowhunting, man like.
- 34:12Speaker 1: But it's when you when you go through this enough,
- 34:15Speaker 1: you just realize like, yeah, like my plan is this,
- 34:17Speaker 1: and I believe in it because I'm doing it, and
- 34:19Speaker 1: when it doesn't work, which ninety nine percent of the
- 34:22Speaker 1: time it just won't, it's like, okay, well, I just
- 34:24Speaker 1: have to do something else.
- 34:25Speaker 2: And when you when you're you know, at home.
- 34:28Speaker 1: I think that's tougher for people because they feel like
- 34:30Speaker 1: they can sort of create a situation where failure is
- 34:33Speaker 1: less of an option or a.
- 34:34Speaker 2: Less likely outcome.
- 34:35Speaker 1: Maybe, but it's not because the woods are dynamic and
- 34:38Speaker 1: deer dynamic and things change all the time. When you go,
- 34:42Speaker 1: you know, you load up your truck and you head
- 34:43Speaker 1: out to Kansas or wherever, you're just like, I'm coming
- 34:47Speaker 1: into a place that's going to hand me failure mostly right,
- 34:51Speaker 1: And it's like I'm okay with that because I don't
- 34:53Speaker 1: I don't live here. I don't get to walk out
- 34:55Speaker 1: here and glass them over and over and over again
- 34:58Speaker 1: and figure out that they walk by that tree when
- 34:59Speaker 1: the winds out of the west or whatever. Like, You've
- 35:01Speaker 1: got to figure that out in real time. And I
- 35:03Speaker 1: think comfort with that failure is like sort of a
- 35:07Speaker 1: big differentiator between a lot of really good hunters and
- 35:11Speaker 1: a lot of people who are sort of struggling to
- 35:13Speaker 1: like hit that goal right. And when when you talk about,
- 35:17Speaker 1: you know, rolling with fighters who are like you know,
- 35:22Speaker 1: they're above you on the in the packing area, like
- 35:24Speaker 1: they just they're just better at it in every way
- 35:27Speaker 1: or whatever.
- 35:27Speaker 3: It's like they're better, they're bigger, they're stronger, they're faster,
- 35:30Speaker 3: they're younger, they're they're all the things right.
- 35:33Speaker 1: And literally every advantage out there, you go into that
- 35:35Speaker 1: and you go, I know I'm going to fail. You
- 35:37Speaker 1: pick up a trad bow and you know that on paper,
- 35:42Speaker 1: that's going to cost you some deer thin there's I mean,
- 35:45Speaker 1: it's just I've I've gotten better with this about filming
- 35:48Speaker 1: because I freaking hate filming hunts, especially white tail hunts.
- 35:52Speaker 1: But now I'm just like having an extra person with
- 35:55Speaker 1: me is going to cost me one or two opportunities
- 35:57Speaker 1: in every four or five six day trip for sure,
- 36:00Speaker 1: Like I just it still sucks, but you just have
- 36:03Speaker 1: to be like that's just the thing that's going to happen.
- 36:05Speaker 1: And what's just as important is I'm going to cost
- 36:10Speaker 1: me some opportunity during this hunt too, like I'm going
- 36:14Speaker 1: to make a decision or something that's just going to
- 36:16Speaker 1: screw this up. And it's like if you're kind of
- 36:19Speaker 1: doing that thing with intention, like we talked about earlier
- 36:21Speaker 1: in this stuff, and you're like, well, I know the
- 36:23Speaker 1: failure is going to be here, like I don't want
- 36:24Speaker 1: to fail, but it's just whatever. It's like a it's
- 36:27Speaker 1: a consequence of doing these hard things like eventually that
- 36:30Speaker 1: you just won't at some point and you'll hit that
- 36:33Speaker 1: goal or you'll kill that deer or you'll have that
- 36:35Speaker 1: great encounter, and it's like okay, like I'm not I'm
- 36:39Speaker 1: not immune to that failure again because that's coming again.
- 36:41Speaker 1: But it's like you just learn like, okay, well sometimes
- 36:44Speaker 1: you miss them, like sometimes you're just not paying attention
- 36:47Speaker 1: and they get in on you and they see you
- 36:48Speaker 1: and they run away, or you you get a little
- 36:51Speaker 1: lazy and you're like I'm going to set up here
- 36:52Speaker 1: even though the wind is not great, and then you
- 36:55Speaker 1: get busted and you're like, ah, yeah, like I failed,
- 36:57Speaker 1: big deal. I think I think doing hard stuff teaches
- 37:02Speaker 1: you that about all of these things and just makes
- 37:05Speaker 1: it like way more palatable overall.
- 37:09Speaker 3: Yeah, I think if you just kind of go into things,
- 37:12Speaker 3: you know, whatever endeavor, it is just knowing that that
- 37:17Speaker 3: failing part of it is the cost of doing business
- 37:20Speaker 3: flat out, that's just you just might as well like
- 37:23Speaker 3: write it in the check book as a deduction. Right,
- 37:25Speaker 3: it's gonna it's gonna happen. Right. And so I think
- 37:30Speaker 3: with that going back to like the Andy and like
- 37:32Speaker 3: what makes them those guys different, Like I've always kind
- 37:34Speaker 3: of thought for them to a degree, It's like I've
- 37:38Speaker 3: always kind of thought of it this way that it's
- 37:40Speaker 3: disciplining care they care enough about it to be disciplined, right,
- 37:44Speaker 3: And what is discipline really is doing the thing that
- 37:46Speaker 3: you don't really want to do when you need to
- 37:49Speaker 3: do it because you just know you have to.
- 37:51Speaker 4: Right.
- 37:51Speaker 3: I'm sure there's plenty of times, you know, I'm sure
- 37:54Speaker 3: you you experienced this as well. You know I know
- 37:56Speaker 3: that I do. You'll be sitting somewhere and you're like, man,
- 38:00Speaker 3: I should probably take my stuff down and move two
- 38:02Speaker 3: hundred yards over there, because I just watched three deer
- 38:04Speaker 3: walk through this opening over here, you know, or this
- 38:06Speaker 3: creek crossing or whatever, and I know I should move
- 38:09Speaker 3: over there right be You're like, I just set all
- 38:11Speaker 3: my stuff up, I don't want to move right. Well,
- 38:15Speaker 3: the disciplined person goes and the Karen huff, which then
- 38:18Speaker 3: kicks in their discipline, says, I don't really want to
- 38:20Speaker 3: do this, but it's the thing that I should do.
- 38:23Speaker 3: Therefore I'm going to do it. And that's all the
- 38:25Speaker 3: conversation you have to have with yourself, and it's done right.
- 38:28Speaker 3: The undisciplined person, you know, is you know, probably not
- 38:33Speaker 3: going to make that move and is just going to
- 38:35Speaker 3: kind of sit tight and see what, you know, see
- 38:38Speaker 3: what happens that they'll pull their gearity end of the night,
- 38:40Speaker 3: you know, and watch ten more deer walk through that
- 38:43Speaker 3: opening and never make a move right. And to me,
- 38:45Speaker 3: that's the difference. That's what the guys like Andy has like,
- 38:48Speaker 3: they just do the thing that they got to do
- 38:49Speaker 3: because they know they've got to go do it right.
- 38:52Speaker 3: And then there's this kind of I guess this mantra
- 38:55Speaker 3: I started kind of living by, especially with travel hunting
- 38:58Speaker 3: just in general. Is that, you know, is that I
- 39:02Speaker 3: look at it like this, that my hunt doesn't really
- 39:04Speaker 3: start until something bad happens, Like that's when my hunt
- 39:10Speaker 3: actually starts, you know. And for example, going out to
- 39:14Speaker 3: Kansas two years ago, you know, I got a flat
- 39:17Speaker 3: tire in Ohio, I blew a tire out on the trailer.
- 39:20Speaker 3: And it was when I blew that tire out, I
- 39:22Speaker 3: thought to myself, was like, I'm probably going to kill
- 39:24Speaker 3: the biggest year of my life on this trip, you know,
- 39:26Speaker 3: because I was going to get there late. I had
- 39:29Speaker 3: to run and try to get get a tire fit
- 39:31Speaker 3: get a new tire. They didn't have the size. I
- 39:33Speaker 3: spent two days in Ohio going to tire stores trying
- 39:36Speaker 3: to find it an extra tire for my trailer. Finally
- 39:39Speaker 3: got one, got there. You know, rest of the history
- 39:42Speaker 3: ended up killing a deer. But it was at that
- 39:43Speaker 3: moment where I was like, this has no other option
- 39:46Speaker 3: other than to work out for me, because this the
- 39:48Speaker 3: hunt just started and I'm still on the road, right
- 39:51Speaker 3: And so I kind of tried to go into the
- 39:53Speaker 3: hunts that way now, where that when something bad happens
- 39:57Speaker 3: and it doesn't have to be bad but doesn't break
- 39:59Speaker 3: my way or whatever cases, I just think about it
- 40:01Speaker 3: and go, all right, it's actually starting. Now. Good, we
- 40:03Speaker 3: got that out of the way. Now we're ready to roll,
- 40:06Speaker 3: you know. And that was the same thing that last
- 40:07Speaker 3: year when I was hunting that big deer, and I
- 40:08Speaker 3: know we talked about that on this show that it
- 40:13Speaker 3: wasn't until you know, I screwed up one of the sits,
- 40:18Speaker 3: you know, where I was like, cool, now we're ready
- 40:22Speaker 3: like things, and now it starts, you know, And you
- 40:26Speaker 3: know that hunt didn't quite work out the way I
- 40:28Speaker 3: would have wanted it to. But I try to keep
- 40:31Speaker 3: that mindset that way. I don't ever let the things
- 40:34Speaker 3: that are not going my way be the things that
- 40:37Speaker 3: start to dictate how I react to like the rest
- 40:40Speaker 3: of the hunt. Right, And it goes back to that intention.
- 40:43Speaker 3: So every day I try to set an intention for
- 40:45Speaker 3: what I'm going out for, Like if I'm doing a
- 40:48Speaker 3: lot of scouting that day instead of like sitting, and
- 40:50Speaker 3: then it's like what am I looking for? And I'll
- 40:51Speaker 3: be very specific about what I'm trying to look for.
- 40:54Speaker 3: And it's just like not to be oheady, but it's
- 40:56Speaker 3: like when you're trying to find, you know, a mate,
- 41:00Speaker 3: when you look real hard, you never find them. When
- 41:03Speaker 3: you're never looking at all. It just happened to show up, right,
- 41:07Speaker 3: And so that's kind of the way I view hunting
- 41:08Speaker 3: to a degree, is that whenever I'm looking really hard,
- 41:11Speaker 3: say I'm trying to cut a track, and maybe I'm
- 41:13Speaker 3: not finding any tracks that day, and this is exactly
- 41:15Speaker 3: what happened to me. I was looking for tracks and
- 41:16Speaker 3: I couldn't cut a track, and then all of a sudden,
- 41:18Speaker 3: I found that deer's rub and I knew if I
- 41:20Speaker 3: could find one of his rubs, i'd find a bunch
- 41:22Speaker 3: of them because he had an identifying mark. And sure enough,
- 41:24Speaker 3: that's what I found, and then that's what I used
- 41:26Speaker 3: to track that deer down, right, So it wasn't And
- 41:29Speaker 3: it was because I went out that day and didn't
- 41:31Speaker 3: let the previous days of failing snowball into making that
- 41:35Speaker 3: day terrible. What I did was I just said, Nope,
- 41:37Speaker 3: today's this is the thing I'm looking for. And then
- 41:40Speaker 3: with that, you know, my aperture wasn't cloudy outside of that,
- 41:45Speaker 3: like focus point necessarily, and I was able to kind
- 41:47Speaker 3: of see things that maybe I wouldn't pick up otherwise,
- 41:49Speaker 3: and then you know, lo and behold, I found a
- 41:51Speaker 3: critical piece of intel that got me a lot closer
- 41:54Speaker 3: to him and put me in the right kind of
- 41:55Speaker 3: area to have an encounter.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Yeah, dude, I mean I think I think that one
- 42:02Speaker 1: of the things, you know, like there's an intangible you know,
- 42:05Speaker 1: we talk about Andy May all the time. He's kind
- 42:07Speaker 1: of it's almost kind of a joke to bring him
- 42:09Speaker 1: up because we always use him as the example for
- 42:11Speaker 1: like what you should aspire to, and I know he
- 42:14Speaker 1: listens to it and it's great. But one of the
- 42:18Speaker 1: things that like kind of on that point is like,
- 42:22Speaker 1: all right, you're driving to wherever your tire blows, like
- 42:25Speaker 1: that shit happens on those trips a lot, right, Like
- 42:28Speaker 1: something bad happens and you say that kicks off your hunt.
- 42:32Speaker 1: I think that enough experience out there teaches you that
- 42:35Speaker 1: those bad things are coming, and they don't have to
- 42:40Speaker 1: they don't have to be as negative of an influence
- 42:42Speaker 1: on your overall season or your week or your trip
- 42:47Speaker 1: as it's like easy to make them be right, Like
- 42:50Speaker 1: I think about I mean, I've had, you know, I've
- 42:53Speaker 1: had all kinds of stuff go wrong at home and
- 42:56Speaker 1: on different trips, and I think about some of them
- 42:58Speaker 1: were like, you know, I don't know. I think it
- 43:01Speaker 1: was twenty eighteen, buddy, and I drove all the way
- 43:04Speaker 1: down to southern Oklahoma, which is a haul from central Minnesota.
- 43:10Speaker 1: Right went to a place that I had pinned all
- 43:13Speaker 1: my hopes on.
- 43:14Speaker 2: You know.
- 43:14Speaker 1: It's like, I think it was like four thousand acres
- 43:17Speaker 1: of public land.
- 43:18Speaker 2: I'm like, Oklahoma's covered in deer. It's going to be great.
- 43:21Speaker 1: We get there, set up camp, you know, long drive,
- 43:24Speaker 1: fifteen hours whatever it is, and I mean, I cannot
- 43:28Speaker 1: find a deer, like I cannot find a track. I
- 43:31Speaker 1: can't find I'm not talking one forties. I'm talking like
- 43:35Speaker 1: a deer. And I ended up wandering around one day
- 43:40Speaker 1: for like five hours, stand on my back, whole thing.
- 43:44Speaker 1: Walked into this little oakmont and jumped a little buck
- 43:46Speaker 1: out of it, and there was like two little rubs,
- 43:49Speaker 1: and I was like, I'm going to sit here and
- 43:50Speaker 1: wait for him to come back because I have nothing
- 43:53Speaker 1: going on. And there's one tree and I look at
- 43:56Speaker 1: it and I'm like, all right, I can get up
- 43:57Speaker 1: into that tree and I put my first I stick
- 44:00Speaker 1: around the bottom and I look and it was it
- 44:02Speaker 1: had gotten kind of cool for cold for down there,
- 44:05Speaker 1: like whatever tempt that is. And there were these wasps
- 44:09Speaker 1: in this tree like it had like real thick bark,
- 44:12Speaker 1: and they were like hold up all over in there,
- 44:15Speaker 1: and I was like, I can't go up this tree.
- 44:16Speaker 1: I'm gonna die right like if it gets like five
- 44:19Speaker 1: degrees warmer, They're going to destroy me. So I left,
- 44:23Speaker 1: grab my stuff, and I had looked on the on
- 44:27Speaker 1: X and I saw a spot that had a little
- 44:29Speaker 1: stream flowing through it, like I'm gonna go over to
- 44:31Speaker 1: that spot to see if I can find something, maybe
- 44:33Speaker 1: I can kill something on water or whatever. And I
- 44:36Speaker 1: got there and it was sort of this like wash out,
- 44:40Speaker 1: little kind of like seep coming out of the hillside.
- 44:42Speaker 1: It was kind of cool, but I wanted to get
- 44:45Speaker 1: to the far side of it, so I had to
- 44:47Speaker 1: cross it. And it was, you know, a shallow no
- 44:48Speaker 1: big deal. But I stepped on these rocks that were
- 44:51Speaker 1: slippery and fell hard and had my bow in my
- 44:55Speaker 1: hand and slammed my bow against the ground. Arrows went flying,
- 44:59Speaker 1: and I'm like, okay, Okay, now I don't know if
- 45:01Speaker 1: I have a functioning bow like on this trip that
- 45:05Speaker 1: I'm you know, two days into fifteen hours from home.
- 45:09Speaker 1: So I grabbed one of my arrows and picked out
- 45:12Speaker 1: a little plant or something on the hillside where I'm like,
- 45:15Speaker 1: I'm gonna just shoot at it, and you know, this
- 45:17Speaker 1: broadhead will be screwed, but at least I'll know if
- 45:18Speaker 1: my bow is still on or not because I smoked
- 45:20Speaker 1: it on the ground.
- 45:21Speaker 2: I actually smoked it on rocks.
- 45:23Speaker 1: So I take a shot at this like little bush
- 45:26Speaker 1: on this hillside right like, just like, I was very
- 45:30Speaker 1: confident my bow was not going to shoot well, take
- 45:33Speaker 1: aim at it thirty yards away, shoot hit it just perfectly,
- 45:36Speaker 1: and there must have been a little rock or something
- 45:38Speaker 1: buried in there. My arrow just exploded. So I'm like, okay,
- 45:42Speaker 1: I can't find a deer. I damn near can cuss
- 45:45Speaker 1: myself on the side of this little creek. Slammed my
- 45:47Speaker 1: bow against the ground, just blew up an arrow. Still
- 45:49Speaker 1: can't find a deer, and ended up finding a dough in.
- 45:53Speaker 1: Two fawns down there that we're spending about four feet
- 45:57Speaker 1: of their time walking on public and the rest an
- 46:00Speaker 1: private so my buddies, my buddy and I, we called
- 46:03Speaker 1: an audible drove to northern Oklahoma. I've told the story
- 46:07Speaker 1: a million times. I go, I walk into a spot
- 46:11Speaker 1: I picked out and set up a stand and literally
- 46:14Speaker 1: grabbed a sandwich or something out of my pack who
- 46:17Speaker 1: was like noon heard something behind me. Dope came up,
- 46:21Speaker 1: shot her and I was like, I've spent ten minutes
- 46:25Speaker 1: on this public land in no I mean literally we
- 46:29Speaker 1: just showed up just out of the blue because we
- 46:31Speaker 1: got our asses kicked on this other spot for three days.
- 46:35Speaker 1: Killed that deer. The next morning, my buddy killed a doe.
- 46:38Speaker 1: We got snowed in in a blizzard in Oklahoma, spent
- 46:42Speaker 1: like twenty four hours literally not leaving the camp because
- 46:44Speaker 1: it was wild, got out of that, went out, killed
- 46:47Speaker 1: a buck seven seconds before we had to leave, And
- 46:50Speaker 1: I just remember like most of that trip kicked my ass,
- 46:56Speaker 1: Like most of it was me just failing hard. But
- 47:02Speaker 1: it was like, I don't know, you're in a place
- 47:05Speaker 1: where there's like there should be good dear, you're just
- 47:07Speaker 1: missing something and you've had some bad things go on,
- 47:09Speaker 1: and I think, you know, I've seen this a lot,
- 47:13Speaker 1: like when I used to be at bowhun or I
- 47:15Speaker 1: used to have to do a certain amount of like
- 47:17Speaker 1: media hunts, you know those I don't I guess I
- 47:19Speaker 1: don't really even know if they're a thing now. They
- 47:20Speaker 1: kind of are, but they were big back then, right
- 47:22Speaker 1: because you could, you know, fly in a bunch of
- 47:25Speaker 1: dudes who edited magazines or whatever and get a bunch
- 47:27Speaker 1: of coverage out of it for the whole year or whatever,
- 47:29Speaker 1: wine and dine type shit. And I would see people
- 47:33Speaker 1: if it wasn't pretty easy. A lot of the people
- 47:36Speaker 1: in the industry were like they're sleeping in by like
- 47:39Speaker 1: day three, you know, like even on Turkey hunts and stuff,
- 47:42Speaker 1: And you're like, man, that's like that's just like the
- 47:44Speaker 1: opposite of how you approach it when it's hard, right,
- 47:46Speaker 1: Like you don't just give in. But like there is
- 47:48Speaker 1: an easy mindset, And I think people look at an
- 47:51Speaker 1: entire deer season and they go, you know, like I'm
- 47:54Speaker 1: not feeling it today or I don't think it's going
- 47:56Speaker 1: to be good tomorrow or right on down the line,
- 47:58Speaker 1: so like I have time later. But like we talked
- 48:01Speaker 1: about with you taking your daughter to her first college visit,
- 48:03Speaker 1: like time's gonna go away, buddy, Like that deer season.
- 48:07Speaker 1: That's like everybody's super excited that deer season is starting
- 48:10Speaker 1: right now for most of us, or you know, if
- 48:12Speaker 1: not now, very very soon in the next couple of weeks,
- 48:15Speaker 1: and then it's gonna freaking fly by. It's gonna be Christmas,
- 48:18Speaker 1: that's gonna be over. And so you don't you just
- 48:21Speaker 1: have to be like really aware of how you're treating
- 48:24Speaker 1: those failures and like how you're reacting to them. And
- 48:26Speaker 1: I know, it's like easy to sit here and talk
- 48:27Speaker 1: about them and be like, you're like, I'm sure that
- 48:30Speaker 1: I threw a temper tantrum on that Oklahoma a few times,
- 48:34Speaker 1: Like I'm sure, I'm sure I did, because it was
- 48:37Speaker 1: it was rough shit.
- 48:38Speaker 2: For a while.
- 48:38Speaker 1: But it's like, I don't know, you don't you just
- 48:43Speaker 1: don't quit, Like it's just like that's just like a
- 48:45Speaker 1: part of the thing. And I had a conversation with
- 48:48Speaker 1: one of my daughters last night because they she started
- 48:50Speaker 1: this three on three basketball league and she took a
- 48:54Speaker 1: you know, a fairly easy shot early in the first
- 48:56Speaker 1: game and missed it, and so then she wouldn't shoot
- 48:58Speaker 1: even when she was under and it's like she got
- 49:01Speaker 1: fed the ball she's playing post whatever, she should be
- 49:04Speaker 1: shooting right there. That's like there's no other option for
- 49:07Speaker 1: you that's better than for you to do a little
- 49:08Speaker 1: move and just take your shot. And but she's like
- 49:11Speaker 1: worried about missing again. And I was like, honey, when
- 49:14Speaker 1: we go deer hunting and we miss one, we don't
- 49:16Speaker 1: stop shooting at them.
- 49:17Speaker 3: Like shooter going to shoot, you know.
- 49:20Speaker 1: Like it's time to just square up and take another one.
- 49:24Speaker 1: But it's easy to get into that mindset of like
- 49:26Speaker 1: it's like I'm going to do less because it's hard.
- 49:29Speaker 1: It's like that's just not how that's not how you're
- 49:32Speaker 1: going to get anywhere with something like bow hunting.
- 49:34Speaker 2: This is just challenging.
- 49:36Speaker 3: Yeah, it's shooter gonna shoot. It's gona be my mentality
- 49:40Speaker 3: with the trad bow this year.
- 49:42Speaker 2: You know, so I forgot have you have you killed
- 49:44Speaker 2: dear with a tread bow before?
- 49:45Speaker 4: No?
- 49:46Speaker 2: Okay no.
- 49:47Speaker 3: I hunted one season with a trad bow very unsuccessfully
- 49:50Speaker 3: years ago. And that was kind of what cured me
- 49:53Speaker 3: of it a little bit for a long time, was
- 49:55Speaker 3: that I was like, I just don't think this is
- 49:57Speaker 3: going to be for me. But my mindset going into
- 50:00Speaker 3: this year is just you know, deer that get within
- 50:04Speaker 3: range are going to be in trouble of having some
- 50:06Speaker 3: carbon flung at them this year, you know. And I'm
- 50:09Speaker 3: going to try to start early with you know, as
- 50:11Speaker 3: soon as the season comes in from you middle of September,
- 50:13Speaker 3: Like I'm going to try to just try to put
- 50:15Speaker 3: blood on arrow as my goal, you know, as often
- 50:17Speaker 3: as I can. The one thing you mentioned, though, I
- 50:20Speaker 3: thought it was kind of funny, was you know, throwing
- 50:23Speaker 3: that temper tantrum when things don't go your way, right
- 50:26Speaker 3: cause I think I think sometimes people will misconstruct kind
- 50:29Speaker 3: of what we're talking about, which is like they might
- 50:31Speaker 3: take away from this conversation going, man Clinton, Tony got
- 50:35Speaker 3: it like like they're so dialed when they go in
- 50:38Speaker 3: like nothing gets them off course, right, That couldn't be
- 50:40Speaker 3: further from the truth. Right. It's like I'm an abject,
- 50:42Speaker 3: like I'm a complete mess a lot of times, you know.
- 50:45Speaker 3: But it's not that you don't let yourself have those moments,
- 50:49Speaker 3: because you have to have those, like when you're ticked
- 50:51Speaker 3: off and you need to cuss and kick something or whatever.
- 50:55Speaker 3: You know, there plenty of times I wanted to throw
- 50:57Speaker 3: my bow out of the tree or whatever the case is.
- 50:59Speaker 3: You know, you give yourself that moment, get it out right,
- 51:02Speaker 3: and then right back to business, like, right back to
- 51:04Speaker 3: what do I need to do? What's what's the next
- 51:06Speaker 3: thing I gotta do? Right, But if you don't give
- 51:09Speaker 3: yourself that chance to just kind of lose it, it
- 51:11Speaker 3: just festers and just it will just eat at you. Right,
- 51:13Speaker 3: you just kind of got to get it out and
- 51:15Speaker 3: move on the other part you were kind of talking
- 51:28Speaker 3: about where, you know, because you and I've talked about
- 51:31Speaker 3: this a little bit, you know, probably years ago at
- 51:34Speaker 3: this point. But there is a point that I do
- 51:39Speaker 3: believe that the more you press, the worse you the
- 51:42Speaker 3: worse off you are. Right, I think there is a
- 51:45Speaker 3: time and a moment, you know, where you're better off
- 51:49Speaker 3: maybe taking the next morning off right because maybe you're
- 51:52Speaker 3: just fatigued. You've been getting after it for however many days,
- 51:56Speaker 3: and it's you know, it's a little different if you're
- 51:58Speaker 3: on a three day hunt or maybe a five day hunt.
- 51:59Speaker 3: But some of the hunts that I go on, and
- 52:01Speaker 3: I know that you've gone on, that could be two weeks,
- 52:03Speaker 3: three weeks, whatever the case is. Where I'm just gonna
- 52:08Speaker 3: speak for myself. I can't do you know, the three
- 52:10Speaker 3: thirty four am wake up calls and you know, be
- 52:13Speaker 3: up at dark and up late getting back to camp
- 52:16Speaker 3: or whatever for three weeks straight and be on my game,
- 52:21Speaker 3: so to speak to where I know myself well enough
- 52:24Speaker 3: now that you know, I know, I have probably like
- 52:27Speaker 3: four consecutive days, maybe a fifth. If it feels real,
- 52:30Speaker 3: real good, like I'm close that I can just kind
- 52:32Speaker 3: of push myself and get through it. But if it's
- 52:35Speaker 3: not happening, I start to wonder a little bit. By
- 52:38Speaker 3: not when I say happening that I'm killing something, but
- 52:40Speaker 3: I'm just not in the game. Let's say, for like
- 52:44Speaker 3: four days, I start to question what is it that
- 52:48Speaker 3: I'm doing wrong? And is my fatigue starting to play
- 52:55Speaker 3: a factor in me making mistakes that I don't typically
- 52:57Speaker 3: make right? And so I try to I have that
- 53:00Speaker 3: internal dialogue with myself, you know, to make sure that
- 53:03Speaker 3: I'm I'm not the reason why things are getting mucked up, right,
- 53:06Speaker 3: or if it is, that I'm recognizing it and I'm
- 53:08Speaker 3: fixing it. But if I'm if I'm kind of burning
- 53:11Speaker 3: at both ends and I just ain't got the gas.
- 53:13Speaker 3: It's a lot of times, probably because I'm screwing it up,
- 53:16Speaker 3: or I'm just not paying attention, or I didn't see
- 53:17Speaker 3: that deer coming in because I was kind of dozing off,
- 53:19Speaker 3: or whatever the case is. That to me is like
- 53:20Speaker 3: a sign that, you know what, you're better off sleeping
- 53:24Speaker 3: in a couple extra hours tomorrow and then being ready
- 53:27Speaker 3: to go the next three or four days, then getting
- 53:29Speaker 3: up early and maybe screwing up the one chance you
- 53:31Speaker 3: might get.
- 53:32Speaker 2: Yeah, man, I'll tell you.
- 53:34Speaker 1: One of the lessons that I learned when I started
- 53:36Speaker 1: traveling a lot for deer hunting that has really stuck
- 53:38Speaker 1: with me is you know, like when you say that
- 53:41Speaker 1: and you you know, you kind of learn yourself and
- 53:43Speaker 1: you're like, I got four or five three thirty alarms
- 53:46Speaker 1: in me and then I need a I need a
- 53:49Speaker 1: morning or whatever. When you go at Western hunting sort
- 53:53Speaker 1: of accelerates that learning curve, right Or you're like when
- 53:56Speaker 1: you wake up in that bivsac elk hunting and it's
- 53:59Speaker 1: like days, you learn a lot about yourself, especially if
- 54:02Speaker 1: it's not going very well, like especially if it's not
- 54:04Speaker 1: going to be a bugle fest and you're like, you're
- 54:06Speaker 1: like that that can teach you a lot about who
- 54:09Speaker 1: you really are pretty fast. But one of the things
- 54:12Speaker 1: that sort of I guess I didn't see coming, but
- 54:14Speaker 1: I'm so glad I learned it was when I started
- 54:16Speaker 1: traveling a lot, especially, you know, I went to a
- 54:20Speaker 1: lot of places back then where you didn't have cell
- 54:21Speaker 1: phone receptions, so you were like you were just there,
- 54:25Speaker 1: like you had no distraction, you had no real touch
- 54:28Speaker 1: point to home, you know, like you know, might be
- 54:31Speaker 1: able to go drive somewhere and get reception or whatever,
- 54:32Speaker 1: but it was like an effort to do it, like
- 54:34Speaker 1: you just couldn't pick up your phone and do it.
- 54:36Speaker 1: What I realized was like I don't have anything else
- 54:39Speaker 1: to do, like literally, like I can. I can devote
- 54:42Speaker 1: my entire existence for the next four or five six
- 54:45Speaker 1: days to this task or this you know, pursuit or
- 54:48Speaker 1: whatever and get into a rhythm where it is so
- 54:52Speaker 1: much easier for me in a hunt like that. That's
- 54:55Speaker 1: like a six day hunt to wake up every day
- 54:56Speaker 1: and feel pretty good, even even though I'm in a tent,
- 54:59Speaker 1: even though like on paper, I shouldn't sleep as well
- 55:02Speaker 1: as I do at home.
- 55:03Speaker 2: But when I go.
- 55:04Speaker 1: Out for the day, I don't have that thought that
- 55:07Speaker 1: I could be back in the office working or I
- 55:10Speaker 1: could go pick the girls up.
- 55:11Speaker 2: From school or whatever.
- 55:12Speaker 1: It's like when you when you sort of like close
- 55:15Speaker 1: that stuff out of your life on those hunts, you
- 55:17Speaker 1: just realize like how much you sort of allow life
- 55:21Speaker 1: to bleed into this stuff at home.
- 55:23Speaker 2: And it's not like I'm not saying that. That's like
- 55:27Speaker 2: I don't even.
- 55:27Speaker 1: Know if you can control it really when you're at home, right,
- 55:29Speaker 1: like you can be more aware of it and you know,
- 55:31Speaker 1: take care of your home life a little better or
- 55:33Speaker 1: whatever and probably smooth that out some. But I think
- 55:37Speaker 1: it's easy to forget or easy to just not acknowledge.
- 55:41Speaker 1: You know, you're sitting here now dreaming about that rut
- 55:43Speaker 1: cation you're going to take right and it's like, yeah,
- 55:46Speaker 1: that's going to be great. But the odds of you
- 55:49Speaker 1: really unplugging for seven days in a row and doing
- 55:51Speaker 1: all days sits are pretty low because you'll be out
- 55:53Speaker 1: there at you know, eleven o'clock in the afternoon and
- 55:56Speaker 1: it's day three and you want to take a nap,
- 55:57Speaker 1: or you want to go do something else, or it's
- 55:59Speaker 1: too hot, too cold. It's like really easy to give
- 56:02Speaker 1: into that stuff and it's okay, But like once you
- 56:05Speaker 1: learn that, and that's I mean, that's one of the
- 56:06Speaker 1: things that I preach the travel game a lot, because
- 56:09Speaker 1: I think you just can't learn things about yourself and
- 56:13Speaker 1: your hunting style and what you really like without taking
- 56:16Speaker 1: yourself out of the environment that you're very, very used
- 56:18Speaker 1: to and just going to try something different. Once like,
- 56:21Speaker 1: you learn a lot about yourself and you bring those
- 56:24Speaker 1: lessons home with you, you know, to your to your home, farm,
- 56:27Speaker 1: your lease, whatever, and like that shit changes how you
- 56:31Speaker 1: approach everything.
- 56:32Speaker 3: I think, Yeah, in one hundred percent, and especially you
- 56:36Speaker 3: were dead on with the whole the Western hunt. Yeah,
- 56:41Speaker 3: especially when they're not bugling. How quickly you find out
- 56:44Speaker 3: what you're made of. There's nothing worse than like multiple
- 56:47Speaker 3: days of hiking mountains in silence, you know, to make
- 56:52Speaker 3: you to make you go crazy, but you know what
- 56:55Speaker 3: you're talking about, because it's a real thing, I think,
- 56:57Speaker 3: at least for me locally. And last year was a
- 57:00Speaker 3: big challenging and test being away from home as much
- 57:03Speaker 3: as I was, you know, and living you know, the
- 57:06Speaker 3: vagabond white tail lifestyle for as long as I did,
- 57:10Speaker 3: because that draw to come home because I was like, man,
- 57:12Speaker 3: my girls are only like two hours away. It's like
- 57:13Speaker 3: I could get back home, and I was coming home
- 57:15Speaker 3: like in between and like doing stuff with the family
- 57:18Speaker 3: and like catching rounds at the gym and like getting
- 57:21Speaker 3: a lift in and then running back and like I
- 57:24Speaker 3: was fried, not just from the hunting, but the juggling
- 57:27Speaker 3: of everything. And so there's definitely a real, a real
- 57:32Speaker 3: benefit to just traveling somewhere and knowing you're going to
- 57:35Speaker 3: be somewhere for six days where you can just kind
- 57:36Speaker 3: of lock in because you learned so much, just like
- 57:40Speaker 3: like you said about yourself, but you get a chance
- 57:43Speaker 3: to really kind of try things that maybe you don't
- 57:45Speaker 3: get the time to try because a lot of times,
- 57:48Speaker 3: you know, you you might have an idea of something
- 57:51Speaker 3: you want to do locally at home, but if you're
- 57:53Speaker 3: working on a livinging, like I go, I'm gonna hunt Saturday,
- 57:55Speaker 3: or I'm gonna hunt Sunday, and then I got to
- 57:56Speaker 3: work this day, and then I got this thing with
- 57:58Speaker 3: the family this day, and so you're just kind of
- 58:00Speaker 3: go into your bag of a game right where it's like,
- 58:02Speaker 3: what's the best stuff I can do, And that's only
- 58:04Speaker 3: the only things I'm going to do, But it might
- 58:06Speaker 3: not be the thing that's gonna work best in that scenario, right,
- 58:09Speaker 3: And when you travel and you're gone for six days,
- 58:12Speaker 3: it's like you kind of go through your bag of
- 58:14Speaker 3: a game kind of quick. You know, you're like, I'm
- 58:16Speaker 3: good at this, this and this, and I've already done
- 58:17Speaker 3: those three things. It didn't work. It's like, what am
- 58:19Speaker 3: I going to do now? And so now you go
- 58:21Speaker 3: to like things you're like, man, I was thinking about
- 58:23Speaker 3: doing this one time, said well let's try it, right,
- 58:26Speaker 3: So that's the it's like the experimentation part happens. And
- 58:29Speaker 3: that's a real thing. And in I think in pretty
- 58:33Speaker 3: much every endeavor of life to a general generally speaking,
- 58:36Speaker 3: and I see it a lot in like at the gym,
- 58:39Speaker 3: in that practice, because a lot of what you do
- 58:42Speaker 3: is you kind of level up and get better, especially
- 58:44Speaker 3: if you're training with people who maybe aren't as as
- 58:46Speaker 3: skilled as you, start to use your B and C
- 58:48Speaker 3: game versus them and play with things you wouldn't do
- 58:51Speaker 3: against someone who you kind of test yourself against it,
- 58:54Speaker 3: if that makes sense, right. And so at home, I
- 58:56Speaker 3: feel like you're kind of testing yourself because you know
- 58:58Speaker 3: it so well, right, So you're really kind of using
- 59:00Speaker 3: your a game stuff when you're on the road and
- 59:03Speaker 3: you're traveling and the environment is kind of a little
- 59:05Speaker 3: bit of an unknown. You go through your a game stuff,
- 59:07Speaker 3: but as soon as it doesn't work, you start to
- 59:09Speaker 3: think about what else could I be doing, and you're
- 59:11Speaker 3: way more it's a lot easier to say, man, it
- 59:16Speaker 3: just didn't work out. That was new terrain, a new
- 59:17Speaker 3: state for me. I've never been there before, never scouted it.
- 59:20Speaker 3: I just showed up and hunted it and it didn't
- 59:22Speaker 3: work out. So you're a lot more willing to accept
- 59:24Speaker 3: that failure of trying new stuff whenever the odds are
- 59:28Speaker 3: so stacked against you than you are of saying, man,
- 59:32Speaker 3: I tried stuff that I don't typically do on my home,
- 59:35Speaker 3: my farm or the public that I've hunted for twenty
- 59:37Speaker 3: years and it didn't work out, Because then you feel
- 59:38Speaker 3: a little bit less like I should have this figured
- 59:41Speaker 3: out already, right, And so I think it takes a
- 59:44Speaker 3: little bit of the pressure off you, which whenever you've
- 59:46Speaker 3: removed the pressure, I think then you really kind of
- 59:48Speaker 3: start to you start to really become the hunter you're
- 59:52Speaker 3: supposed to be. I think, at least I found that
- 59:54Speaker 3: in my experience and this year we're gonna tell. But
- 59:57Speaker 3: then there's the family component of it too, like how
- 59:59Speaker 3: do you keep the family happy and the balance like
- 1:00:02Speaker 3: when you're traveling and you're out right like that's a
- 1:00:04Speaker 3: touchy thing, and I'm gonna I'm going to test the
- 1:00:06Speaker 3: limits this year, I think because last year was a
- 1:00:08Speaker 3: lot right for the family. I was gone for like
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: whatever it was, like thirty five days. I slept in
- 1:00:13Speaker 3: the truck and trailer. And then this year, my plan
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: is to head out to the Midwest. I think like
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: the last week of I'll be there by the last
- 1:00:20Speaker 3: week of October. So I'll leave like the third week
- 1:00:23Speaker 3: sometime the end of the third week of October, and
- 1:00:26Speaker 3: my plan is to not come back until I kill
- 1:00:28Speaker 3: something or Thanksgiving, whichever happens first. So it's I'm gonna.
- 1:00:33Speaker 2: Work out shape, buddy.
- 1:00:35Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah, So we'll uh that's the that's the
- 1:00:39Speaker 4: one perk of the of the daughter having her driver's
- 1:00:42Speaker 4: license and being able to get herself to point A
- 1:00:43Speaker 4: to point B, you know, like she can do all
- 1:00:45Speaker 4: that stuff herself now.
- 1:00:46Speaker 3: So so we'll see, we'll see, you know, we'll see
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: how quickly I get a phone call, like hey, when
- 1:00:50Speaker 3: you're coming back. We'll see how that plays out.
- 1:00:52Speaker 1: I want, I want to back up a second, because
- 1:00:56Speaker 1: you know, when you're talking about going on the road,
- 1:00:58Speaker 1: and you know, like AGG game doesn't work out, it's
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: time to dip into the B game, because whatever, what
- 1:01:03Speaker 1: else are you going to do?
- 1:01:04Speaker 2: Right? I think I think that.
- 1:01:08Speaker 1: That is like one of the most understated things about
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: why traveling to hunts beneficial. And you know, I say
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: this all the time, right, like, you don't have to
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: go out of state. You don't have to draw that
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: I would tag like I look at my home state
- 1:01:20Speaker 1: of Minnesota, in the different environments I can hunt in
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: just in Minnesota, you know, I can go up into
- 1:01:27Speaker 1: the right and hunt big wood stuff where there isn't
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: an egg field for twenty five miles.
- 1:01:32Speaker 2: I can go.
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: Left, you know, north, south, whatever and hit grassland and
- 1:01:37Speaker 1: prairie potholes and cattails and places, you know, counties where
- 1:01:41Speaker 1: there aren't you know, a.
- 1:01:43Speaker 2: Whole section of trees in the whole freaking county.
- 1:01:45Speaker 1: Right, I go to the southeast, and it's like I
- 1:01:47Speaker 1: have two point zero with worst season structure. When you
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: go do something where you don't have the option to
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: go home, right, when you go do whatever trip that
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: is is a long weekend somewhere or something like that.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Not only do you do what you said where you're like,
- 1:02:05Speaker 1: I'm gonna just I'm gonna be gaming the shit because
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: I don't know what else to do and I have
- 1:02:09Speaker 1: to do something. You also don't have that option to
- 1:02:13Speaker 1: not go. And this is you know, I write about
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: this and I talk about this all the time, where
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: like modern white tail hunting advice, a lot of it
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: is predicated on not hunting. You're being smart by not
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: hunting now. You're being smart by not hunting mornings in
- 1:02:27Speaker 1: the early season. You're being smart by not pushing it
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: in mid October when you can just wait. And it's
- 1:02:34Speaker 1: just not good advice for a lot of people. For
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: some people. If you if you your primary goal is
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: to kill a big one, that is great advice. If
- 1:02:43Speaker 1: you have the farm and that's what you want, that's great.
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: But for a lot of people who are like, I'm
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: not I'm not killing the kind of deer I want, Like,
- 1:02:52Speaker 1: it's probably more important for you to get the woodsmanship
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: and go than it is for you to follow somebody
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: else's playbook who has an amazing phon and they can
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: run that strategy, right, So I think about that, like
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: when I go on the road and it's like eighty
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: five degrees and the winds out of the east and
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: everything sucks right, Like where if you're at home, you're like,
- 1:03:14Speaker 1: I am not hunting today, Like I'm going to do
- 1:03:16Speaker 1: something else with my time. They'll be more productive. When
- 1:03:18Speaker 1: you're on the road, you can't. So you're like, Okay,
- 1:03:20Speaker 1: how do I figure it out? Do I go sit water?
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: What do I do?
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: And you know as well as I do. I mean
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: fifty percent of the time you're out there, you hit
- 1:03:28Speaker 1: those kind of conditions where it's like, man, if I
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: was at home, I'd have a pretty good reason to
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: not do this. But when I'm on the road and
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: I have four or five six days, I don't have
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: that choice. So I got to make every sit count
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: and every day count. So you're like, how do I
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: make the most of this shitty situation or this weather
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: that's just working against me. When you're in a situation
- 1:03:51Speaker 1: where that's like that's just what you have to do,
- 1:03:53Speaker 1: Like you don't have the choice to go back and
- 1:03:55Speaker 1: work and get a few hours in or whatever, it's
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: like you really figure out out a lot about deer
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: and about nature and about other hunters and how they're
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: probably like the locals who are in the place that
- 1:04:09Speaker 1: you traveled to aren't going to go when it's eighty
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: five degrees in the winds out of the east, right,
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: You're gonna be the only one out there, and all
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: of a sudden you learn about stuff like that. And
- 1:04:17Speaker 1: I think for me personally, when I started traveling a lot,
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: hunting a lot of public land, I think not having
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: an out was maybe the best thing that happened to me.
- 1:04:26Speaker 2: I mean, there's like.
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: A lot of benefits to just showing up and being like,
- 1:04:30Speaker 1: I'm going to learn a new environment. I'm gonna learn
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: the deer here, and I'm gonna figure it out. All
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: that stuff's great, But also just not having an out
- 1:04:37Speaker 1: is huge because then you're like, I mean, you know,
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: like I'm kind of known for hunting water a lot, right,
- 1:04:42Speaker 1: I'm like, well, one of the reasons I hunt water
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: a lot is because I'm in a lot of places
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: where it's like I don't know what else to do
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: here that would maybe be as consistent as deer's thirst, right, So,
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: like you know, like it's not like some grand like
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: I don't have some like grand strategy. Like a lot
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: of times I'm like struggling and I want to be
- 1:05:03Speaker 1: around deer, and that's just one of the easier ways
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: to do it, especially on public where the food source
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: thing is often not as cut and dry, right, Like,
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: if I'm on a public land somewhere that has fields,
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: I'm almost never going to hunt them because everybody's going
- 1:05:18Speaker 1: to hunt them. So then you're like, well, am i
- 1:05:20Speaker 1: going to tap into this acorn drop or I'm going
- 1:05:23Speaker 1: to tap into this browse thing or is like something
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: that could work very well if you can find it,
- 1:05:27Speaker 1: but also could be really hard to find and work
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: in a short amount of time. So I'm like, well,
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: almost waters easier, so I'm going to start here. And
- 1:05:36Speaker 1: oftentimes when you're doing that, you're like, oh man, the
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: acorn drop is here. Now I have water and food.
- 1:05:43Speaker 1: Now I have something. But just not having that out
- 1:05:46Speaker 1: is huge.
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: Yeah, not having the out is I mean if it
- 1:05:50Speaker 3: forces your hand. Right when we were talking you know
- 1:05:53Speaker 3: earlier about the discipline, it kind of forces the discipline
- 1:05:56Speaker 3: to a degree, right, But the one thing you kind
- 1:05:59Speaker 3: of talk talking about, well, you know, people will make
- 1:06:01Speaker 3: an excuse, you know, or it'll be the reason why
- 1:06:04Speaker 3: they don't go hunt that day because of the bad
- 1:06:06Speaker 3: weather or it's warm, or whatever the case is. But
- 1:06:09Speaker 3: the one thing that's tried and true that if you
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: talk to anybody that's you know, a good hunter and
- 1:06:14Speaker 3: killed a lot of deer, however you want to qualify it,
- 1:06:16Speaker 3: the one thing the wall tell you for the most
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: part is time and seat. If you want to kill
- 1:06:20Speaker 3: deer like of whatever caliber, the more time you spend
- 1:06:24Speaker 3: trying to do it, the more likely you are to
- 1:06:26Speaker 3: do it right because there's those opportunities and those encounters
- 1:06:30Speaker 3: are are super fleeting, and you never know when they're
- 1:06:32Speaker 3: going to happen. Plenty of people have killed your own
- 1:06:35Speaker 3: bad weather days or warm weather days or whatever the
- 1:06:36Speaker 3: case is. I'm a great example, you know, Like I've
- 1:06:39Speaker 3: the biggest one I've killed was on an eighty degree
- 1:06:41Speaker 3: day right where it's like most people probably wouldn't hunted
- 1:06:44Speaker 3: that day. But I think the one thing too, talking
- 1:06:48Speaker 3: about mindset a little bit, that you know, I try
- 1:06:51Speaker 3: to I try to do I'm you and I are
- 1:06:54Speaker 3: similar in the way that like our minds like we're
- 1:06:55Speaker 3: both like we're both slightly pessimistic because we're very pragmatic, right, like,
- 1:07:00Speaker 3: like I see things for what they are, and I
- 1:07:01Speaker 3: don't make them out to be more or less than
- 1:07:03Speaker 3: what they are, right, But there is a little bit
- 1:07:06Speaker 3: of there. There are times, and it is helpful when
- 1:07:08Speaker 3: you can start to fool yourself a little bit in
- 1:07:11Speaker 3: being more positive because it because it does help. And
- 1:07:14Speaker 3: so especially on those travel hunts when I'm not getting
- 1:07:16Speaker 3: the weather that I want and the plan that I
- 1:07:18Speaker 3: have isn't playing out because I'm either I'm getting more
- 1:07:21Speaker 3: rain than I expected, or I'm getting more hot weather
- 1:07:24Speaker 3: than I expected, or I'm getting the wrong wind or
- 1:07:26Speaker 3: whatever the case is. Is that you know, it's just
- 1:07:30Speaker 3: like the you're when you're not looking for something is
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: whenever the thing that you really really want smacks you
- 1:07:35Speaker 3: in the face. Right. And so what I try to
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: do is I try to think about, Okay, this is
- 1:07:39Speaker 3: crap situation is how I think has how I understand
- 1:07:43Speaker 3: it in my pragmatic brain, right, But I try to
- 1:07:47Speaker 3: fool myself and say, how do I make this How
- 1:07:50Speaker 3: do I make this situation great? Like what would be
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: the thing that like would make this situation killer?
- 1:07:56Speaker 2: Right?
- 1:07:56Speaker 3: If it's hot to your point, like, man, this is
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: the best day to hunt water, best day right to
- 1:08:01Speaker 3: do that? Right? You know I'm not I'm getting super
- 1:08:04Speaker 3: high winds, right, And you know people have done studies
- 1:08:07Speaker 3: and deer typically like that, like sweet swat that ten
- 1:08:10Speaker 3: to fifteen, ten to seventeen mile per hour windish you know, situation.
- 1:08:14Speaker 3: But you're you're in the planes and you're getting thirty
- 1:08:15Speaker 3: mile p hour rippers for the next four days. Right,
- 1:08:18Speaker 3: It's like, it's like, awesome, how can I like, what
- 1:08:21Speaker 3: is the best situation for this thirty mile per hour
- 1:08:23Speaker 3: win for the next four days? It's like, well, probably
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: spot and stock them would be really good if you
- 1:08:28Speaker 3: can find one bedt if they don't want to move,
- 1:08:30Speaker 3: you've got the wind noise to your advantage, right, and
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: you've got a constant win that you can now play, right.
- 1:08:35Speaker 3: And so I try to Maybe it's as I get older,
- 1:08:39Speaker 3: I try to look I try to not be so pessimistic, right,
- 1:08:42Speaker 3: and I try to find like what is the opportunity
- 1:08:44Speaker 3: in this, And a lot of times that's where you
- 1:08:47Speaker 3: find your success because it's it forces you to think
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: a little bit outside the box. The deer maybe having
- 1:08:51Speaker 3: to do something different than what they typically are doing, right.
- 1:08:53Speaker 3: You're having to do something outside of what you typically
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: want to do right. And a lot of times, man,
- 1:08:59Speaker 3: you know, whether it's deer hunting or sports or whatever,
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: that kind of unexpected thing is kind of where the
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: magic happens a lot of times, right, And it's not
- 1:09:08Speaker 3: a mystery as to why, but it's I really think
- 1:09:11Speaker 3: it's because you've kind of forced, you know, the situation
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: out of your comfort zone and you had to kind
- 1:09:18Speaker 3: of remove the pressure and just kind of let it
- 1:09:23Speaker 3: come to you, right, however it's going to come to you, right.
- 1:09:26Speaker 3: Football game last night, I know I used two football analogies,
- 1:09:29Speaker 3: but like the Ravens and the Bills, right, like the
- 1:09:32Speaker 3: whole Like I've went to begs. I thought the game
- 1:09:34Speaker 3: was over, and I'll wake up this morning and find
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: that they kicked the field goal with time expiring to
- 1:09:38Speaker 3: win the game, and I'm like, dude, like that fumble
- 1:09:40Speaker 3: and like the whole ending of it, Like I thought
- 1:09:41Speaker 3: it was a crap ending to a game, but ended
- 1:09:43Speaker 3: up being awesome. Right, But they made it that way, right,
- 1:09:47Speaker 3: Opportunities fell, they made the best of it, you know,
- 1:09:50Speaker 3: and they and they had to comeback, you know, come
- 1:09:52Speaker 3: back win. And so I think that you know, when
- 1:09:55Speaker 3: you're hunting, when you kind of have those unideal circumstances,
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: if you just take a second step back and reframe
- 1:10:02Speaker 3: it to what does this situation present the best for
- 1:10:07Speaker 3: and then just go do that thing. Whether you've done
- 1:10:09Speaker 3: it before or not, whether you're experienced at it or not,
- 1:10:12Speaker 3: doesn't matter, because the worst case scenario is you're going
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: to learn something and now you've got that back pocket
- 1:10:17Speaker 3: from wherever you have that happen again, right, and then
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: you're a little bit more confident the second time, best
- 1:10:22Speaker 3: case scenario, you have to feel goal with time expiring situation.
- 1:10:27Speaker 2: Right, dude.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: So that podcast I brought up with Alex Hanold on
- 1:10:31Speaker 1: Huberman's podcast, Alex talked about how.
- 1:10:36Speaker 2: I think he's forty now.
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: He talked about how he doesn't have a lot of
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: surprises climbing anymore, but when he does, they're awesome. And
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: so it's like some move that he didn't think he
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: could make, or some pitch that he did a certain
- 1:10:48Speaker 1: way or something, and he said, you know, when I
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: was younger, like a lot of that shit happened and
- 1:10:51Speaker 1: it was awesome, and it like fueled me now I'm
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: more confident. You know, he's been there, done that, but
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: he's like that still happens, and you could hear it,
- 1:10:59Speaker 1: like like that's still driving him. And I think so
- 1:11:04Speaker 1: often we look at we look at like white tail
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: hunting is like there's a way to do this where
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: there won't be any surprises anymore, right, Like you'll figure
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: out the program to scout, or you'll figure out, you know,
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: a bed hunting strategy or a water hunting strategy, or
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: you'll get that property that you can curate until they
- 1:11:23Speaker 1: come out Halloween every year or whatever.
- 1:11:26Speaker 2: But that's fine, but like the surprises are what's fun.
- 1:11:30Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:11:31Speaker 1: It's like when you do go and it's eighty degrees
- 1:11:33Speaker 1: because you have to because you're twenty seven hours from
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: home and you have nothing else to do, and you
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: kill that dear or see it. That's like the fuel, right,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: and like we're it's hard to like look for that,
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: Like you can't just like you can't structure your hunting
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: really to find that other than just going new places
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: or trying the traad boat thing or something like that.
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: Like there are ways to do it, but like we
- 1:11:54Speaker 1: often retreat from that instead of just being like well,
- 1:11:57Speaker 1: here's the here's the scenario. I want to hunt. I
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: have time, so now I'm going to do something. And
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: like the more that you just do that, like the
- 1:12:05Speaker 1: more that you hunt. And I I know this is
- 1:12:08Speaker 1: I'm beating a dead horse here, but like that's one
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: of the things that bothers me so much about that
- 1:12:13Speaker 1: advice of staying out, staying out, staying safe just to
- 1:12:15Speaker 1: kill a big one. It's like your cost, You're gonna
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: cost yourself. Like in the short term, you might kill
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: a big one doing that, and that might be like
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: a that like might be a strategic means to an end, right,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: but overall, it's not making you a better hunter to
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: spend less time in the woods. Like it's just not
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: like you might be a more successful hunter. And and
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: I'm not saying, like, you know, picking your shots isn't
- 1:12:37Speaker 1: a good idea. Like a lot of us, even when
- 1:12:40Speaker 1: we can hunt, we do play it safe in certain situations,
- 1:12:43Speaker 1: Like I know that I will, especially if I'm on
- 1:12:45Speaker 1: the road and i only have like one thing going on,
- 1:12:47Speaker 1: like if the wind's not right or something, I'm gonna
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: sand bag it and play back. But I'm gonna do
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: something that I think will work still, right, you know,
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: and then you're gonna wait for the wind to turn
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: or the weather or whatever. And you know, sitting that
- 1:12:58Speaker 1: two three days out, but you're still in the game
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: doing something, and it's like when you're when you're doing that,
- 1:13:04Speaker 1: you're like, I'm being smart by not going there, but
- 1:13:06Speaker 1: I'm also being smart by going here because they can't
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: go there. And you know, like sometimes you surprise yourself
- 1:13:12Speaker 1: and you kill vig Onun and you're like, well, I
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: didn't need that other shit, you.
- 1:13:15Speaker 3: Know, right, Yeah, I think the surprise factor is I
- 1:13:20Speaker 3: think is is key. And for me, the further I go,
- 1:13:24Speaker 3: you know, in this in this journey, the more it becomes,
- 1:13:27Speaker 3: the more it becomes important, you know. I think going
- 1:13:31Speaker 3: back to the trad bow thing, right, because you're kind
- 1:13:33Speaker 3: of you know, you mentioned like you add things to
- 1:13:34Speaker 3: it to kind of like get the excitement, get the
- 1:13:36Speaker 3: new experience, get the surprise, right, And I would say
- 1:13:40Speaker 3: there's some of that with the with the trad bow.
- 1:13:42Speaker 3: I think the the unintended consequence I think for me
- 1:13:46Speaker 3: and Carry and maybe not unintended, maybe it was slightly intended,
- 1:13:50Speaker 3: is that I have to be a better hunter to
- 1:13:53Speaker 3: carry that thing, ye, right, Like I got to get
- 1:13:56Speaker 3: closer than I've ever gotten before. My shot selection has
- 1:13:59Speaker 3: to be better than it's ever ever been before. Right,
- 1:14:03Speaker 3: And those to me are like the exciting things, right,
- 1:14:06Speaker 3: Like it's like, how am I going to pull this off?
- 1:14:07Speaker 3: Like I don't know yet, you know what I mean, Like,
- 1:14:10Speaker 3: I'm not sure how it's going to play out, you know,
- 1:14:13Speaker 3: to your point, it's you know that the one that
- 1:14:16Speaker 3: I killed in the planes, that was a good one, right,
- 1:14:17Speaker 3: Like you know some people might want to try but
- 1:14:19Speaker 3: go back and replicate that, right, And so it's like,
- 1:14:21Speaker 3: how do I just continue to do that over and
- 1:14:23Speaker 3: over again? Right? But that's not like to me, that's
- 1:14:26Speaker 3: not the that's not the part that gets me excited.
- 1:14:29Speaker 3: What gets me excited is how do I make this different?
- 1:14:32Speaker 3: How do I how do I get the surprise factor again? Right?
- 1:14:36Speaker 3: Even if I'm hunting the same general areas, you're the
- 1:14:39Speaker 3: same units or whatever the case is. You know, for me,
- 1:14:42Speaker 3: it was, well, let's try to go back and do
- 1:14:44Speaker 3: that now, and let's do it with a long bow. Right,
- 1:14:46Speaker 3: Let's see if we can do that, Like, because if
- 1:14:47Speaker 3: I do be the surprise of my lifetime, you know
- 1:14:52Speaker 3: what I mean, like, if I can decoy one in
- 1:14:53Speaker 3: of that caliber and kill it with a long bow
- 1:14:55Speaker 3: and get like get sub fifteen you know, sub fifteen yards,
- 1:15:00Speaker 3: Like that's bananas, Like that will be just an incredible
- 1:15:04Speaker 3: experience and I will be. You will not find a
- 1:15:06Speaker 3: person more surprised than me if it happens.
- 1:15:10Speaker 1: I've killed a couple with trad bows in my life
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: and it has always been freaking awesome because of that.
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: Because you're like, yeah, it's just it is hard to
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: describe the level of.
- 1:15:21Speaker 2: Disadvantage it is when you're used to using a compound.
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: I mean, it's just it is a huge disadvantage, not
- 1:15:26Speaker 1: only just everybody thinks like you know, shot distance, but
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: also just like maneuvering in a tree, maneuvering in a
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: ground line, anything like that. When you think about a
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: you know, an average compound that might maybe like twenty
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: nine to thirty three inches axled axle, and then you
- 1:15:42Speaker 1: grab a freaking re curve, then you grab a long bow,
- 1:15:45Speaker 1: and now you're at like sixty inches or whatever they are.
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: You're like, it's a totally different thing. Like you can't
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: just shoot behind your tree now, you know, Like you
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: can't just set up on the ground here and have
- 1:15:56Speaker 1: your limb tips clear in everything. It's like a different thing,
- 1:15:58Speaker 1: and it's it feels pretty freaking good. Yeah, buddy, we
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: are out of time here. As always, it's so much
