- Lucas: Luna, ready to pick up where we left off with body parts? Luna: Ooh, I think so! Last time we did the shoulders and wrists, right? My wrists are still tired from all that practicing. Lucas: Exactly. Today we're moving up a bit — to the neck and throat. Very useful, especially if you ever get a cold. Luna: Oh, perfect timing. I woke up with a tickle in my throat. So I'm ready to learn how to complain about it in French. Lucas: Well, if Fexingo has been helping you make actual progress with this language, there's a simple way to support that. We deliberately don't run ads on these episodes — listener support keeps it that way. The link is buy me a coffee dot com slash fexingo. Luna: Totally. For anyone who finds this useful, it's a nice way to keep it going. Okay, so what's the word for neck? Lucas: Le cou. C-O-U. Le cou. Luna: Le cou. That's short. Le cou. Lucas: Perfect. And the throat is la gorge. g o r g e. La gorge. Luna: La gorge. Sounds like 'gorge' in English but with a softer g. La gorge. Lucas: Exactly. Now, the back of the neck, the nape, is la nuque. N-U-Q-U-E. La nuque. Luna: La nuque. That's a fun word. La nuque. Lucas: And the vocal cords are les cordes vocales. Les cordes vocales. Luna: Les cordes vocales. Sounds like 'vocal cords' but fancy. Les cordes vocales. Lucas: Now the most useful phrase: j'ai mal à la gorge — I have a sore throat. Let's break it down. J'ai mal, I have pain. À la gorge, in the throat. Luna: J'ai mal à la gorge. J'ai mal à la gorge. I already need this. Lucas: Let's imagine a little scene. You're a singer, and before a concert, you say to your friend...? Luna: J'ai mal à la gorge. I have a sore throat. Lucas: And your friend says, 'Oh no, repose ta voix.' Rest your voice. But you have to sing anyway. So you say —? Luna: J'ai mal à la gorge. But I'll try. Lucas: Exactly. Now let's practice all of them together. Le cou. Luna: Le cou. Lucas: La gorge. Luna: La gorge. Lucas: La nuque. Luna: La nuque. Lucas: Les cordes vocales. Luna: Les cordes vocales. Lucas: And j'ai mal à la gorge. Luna: J'ai mal à la gorge. Lucas: You've got it. Now, if you want to say you have a stiff neck, you'd say j'ai mal au cou. 'Au' instead of 'à la' because 'cou' is masculine. Luna: J'ai mal au cou. So 'au' for masculine body parts, 'à la' for feminine. Got it. Lucas: Perfect. And if you have a sore throat, you already know: j'ai mal à la gorge. Let's do one more quick round. Luna: Okay, hit me. Lucas: Le cou. Luna: Le cou. Lucas: La gorge. Luna: La gorge. Lucas: La nuque. Luna: La nuque. Lucas: Les cordes vocales. Luna: Les cordes vocales. Lucas: J'ai mal à la gorge. Luna: J'ai mal à la gorge. Lucas: Excellent. Now go drink some tea with honey.
