- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Alright, hey, how's everyone doing?
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's not very loud.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: How's everyone doing this evening?
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: Alright, hey, I uh was told several times, uh, just make sure when I do the children's talk this time, let's not make anyone cry, and that'll be good.
- 0:21SPEAKER_00: So if you hear last time that accidentally happened.
- 0:24SPEAKER_00: So uh my name's Jason Brennan.
- 0:26SPEAKER_00: I'm the children's pastor here at Tobeka Bible Church, and if the kids want to come up here, that's fine.
- 0:32SPEAKER_00: If not, if they want to listen where they're at, that's fine.
- 0:35SPEAKER_00: But I will need a few volunteers, and I will tell you the volunteers will get candy.
- 0:40SPEAKER_00: So if I have a few, I'll just say the first couple kids that come up here.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: Oh, there we go.
- 0:47SPEAKER_00: You three right there.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: Stay behind, yeah.
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: You three come here.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: Say you uh, yeah, okay, you guys can come.
- 0:53SPEAKER_00: Miss Hildebrandt, you wanna come right here?
- 0:55SPEAKER_00: Okay, so you three, Apple Hands is in Hildebrandt.
- 1:00SPEAKER_00: Everybody else go past those cones right there.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Hi, how's it going?
- 1:04SPEAKER_00: Kylie, how you doing?
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: Good.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: All right, so I have we're gonna start, okay?
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: So if this this is supposed to be a kid's message, but it's really for the adults too.
- 1:18SPEAKER_00: So, adults, are you out there?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: Kids, are you out there?
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: Kids, are you out there?
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: Adults, are you out there?
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: All right, that's about equal volume, even though there's more adults.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: That's good.
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Okay, so one of my big convictions in life is that we need to hide God's word in our heart, right?
- 1:42SPEAKER_00: So we can follow God's command so we can know God more.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: And I believe that at first starts, it goes from your head to your heart.
- 1:50SPEAKER_00: Everyone say your head to your heart.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: So, one of my goals for my talk today is for everyone to start hiding God's word in their heart.
- 2:00SPEAKER_00: If you don't know this passage of scripture, uh, it is Proverbs chapter 1, verse 7.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Everyone say Proverbs chapter 1, verse 7.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: And we're gonna try to learn the very first part of the verse, and it goes like this the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 2:27SPEAKER_00: That was pretty good, and I didn't expect you to just do it right there back to me.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: That was really, really good.
- 2:32SPEAKER_00: Okay, but I want you to know is there's three main parts to that first verse.
- 2:38SPEAKER_00: Three main words, and then I'll do the connected words.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It's fear.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: Everyone say fear, fear, it's Lord, a little louder, Lord, and wisdom.
- 2:51SPEAKER_00: Alright, so I'm gonna say the and you're gonna say fear, okay?
- 2:55SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna say of the, and you're gonna say Lord, right?
- 2:59SPEAKER_00: And I'm gonna say it's the beginning of, and you're all gonna say the adults can do this too, it is wisdom.
- 3:05SPEAKER_00: Good, okay, ready?
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So the fear of the is the beginning of Wow, that was pretty good.
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: And I heard the kids a lot more than the adults, so we're gonna do it again.
- 3:19SPEAKER_00: Let's see if the kids can be louder than adults, but adults, you've got to try, okay?
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: All right, ready?
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: The of the is the beginning of all right, the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and the second part that we're not gonna learn, but I want you to remember that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: The second part is fools despise or fools hate wisdom and instruction.
- 3:48SPEAKER_00: So you have to be a foolish person to not fear God, right?
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And so I had a little bit of an object lesson here.
- 3:57SPEAKER_00: So one thing that my kids love to do at our house, maybe you guys know how to do this too, is we like to get these things called Nerf guns and play nerf wars.
- 4:11SPEAKER_00: Does anyone ever here play with nerf guns at your house?
- 4:14SPEAKER_00: Yes, okay.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Who in here uh back there likes Nerf guns?
- 4:18SPEAKER_00: Anyone?
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: Now, I tell my kids, because I want to protect their eyes, I tell them if you're gonna play with Nerf guns, you have to have what what?
- 4:30SPEAKER_00: What do you think I tell them they have to have?
- 4:32SPEAKER_00: Eyeglasses.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: And that's I have eyeglasses, but I tell them they have to have eye protection.
- 4:38SPEAKER_00: Right?
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, and so why would I have them do have wear eye protection?
- 4:43SPEAKER_00: Because I don't like them?
- 4:47SPEAKER_00: I heard lots of possible answers, but it's yes, I don't want them to get hurt.
- 4:51SPEAKER_00: That's right.
- 4:52SPEAKER_00: So I am we're gonna do a little game here with the Nerf guns, okay?
- 4:56SPEAKER_00: And Landon, there you go.
- 4:59SPEAKER_00: You got eyeglasses, good job.
- 5:02SPEAKER_00: Here you go.
- 5:04SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 5:06SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 5:07SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Alright, you have to put eyeglasses on because you don't have eyeglasses.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: No, no.
- 5:11SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: Abel, you're you're all good.
- 5:13SPEAKER_00: Hey, Abel, how's it going?
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: Oh, you got a broken arm.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: That's no good.
- 5:16SPEAKER_00: Alright, okay.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: So if you do not have a nerf gun in your hand, you're gonna put the put them on.
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 5:22SPEAKER_00: If you don't have a nerf gun, take it a couple steps back because what we're gonna do is we're gonna give them a chance to earn some suckers, okay?
- 5:30SPEAKER_00: So, hopefully, it's not too windy.
- 5:32SPEAKER_00: Go back to the cones.
- 5:33SPEAKER_00: Gotta go back to the cones.
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: Go back to the beginning.
- 5:37SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 5:38SPEAKER_00: Here we go.
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 5:41SPEAKER_00: No, don't hit me.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Go back to the cones.
- 5:45SPEAKER_00: There's an orange cones.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: All right, Landon, do you want to go first?
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, go back to the cones.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: Alright, do you know how to just to cock it?
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: You gotta pull it down.
- 5:53SPEAKER_00: You got your glasses?
- 5:54SPEAKER_00: Everyone get back because it would be a really bad illustration if I say that God wants to protect us and I want to protect my kids by having eyeglasses, and then somebody gets hurt during the talk.
- 6:03SPEAKER_00: So that would be bad, okay?
- 6:05SPEAKER_00: So, all right, Landon, you got three shots, ready?
- 6:07SPEAKER_00: Let's try to hit one of those.
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: All right, let's everyone count down, ready?
- 6:11SPEAKER_00: Three, two, one.
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: Oh, all right, do another one, ready?
- 6:17SPEAKER_00: Ready, grow quick.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Three, two, one.
- 6:21SPEAKER_00: Oh, alright.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: All right, last one, ready?
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: Let's say, ready, aim, fire.
- 6:26SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 6:27SPEAKER_00: Ready, aim fire.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: Oh, you got my leg! Okay, very good.
- 6:32SPEAKER_00: Put it bring it back up here, okay?
- 6:34SPEAKER_00: All right, Kylie Joe, you ready?
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: Can you help your sister if she needs it?
- 6:38SPEAKER_00: She's got a mini mouse toy here that she's hard to cock her gun with.
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: So, um, alright, okay.
- 6:44SPEAKER_00: Are we gonna 3-2-1 or ready aim fire?
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: What do you want to do?
- 6:48SPEAKER_00: Okay, ready?
- 6:50SPEAKER_00: Ready! You ready you ready?
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: You gotta shoot though.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 6:54SPEAKER_00: Aim fire! Pull hard oh, so close.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: All right, pull it again, ready?
- 7:01SPEAKER_00: You got another try.
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: Ready! Oh, aim fire! Oh, did he not shoot?
- 7:10SPEAKER_00: Push the bull pushed the nerf dart in there.
- 7:12SPEAKER_00: Alright, one more time.
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: Okay, ready?
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: Ready, aim fire.
- 7:20SPEAKER_00: Oh, good j Oh! It grazed it! Did you see the move?
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: It was either the win or it grazed it.
- 7:25SPEAKER_00: Because Landon pushed it down and helped her aim it.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: Good job.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Oh, he shot two of them down.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Look at that.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:30SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: They got scared.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 7:32SPEAKER_00: Are you ready?
- 7:33SPEAKER_00: Last one.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: You ready?
- 7:35SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: Ready! Oh, Ichi was ready.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: Okay, shoot again, ready?
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: You gotta pull the bottom, you gotta cock it.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 7:42SPEAKER_00: Daxon will help you there.
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: Alright, yeah.
- 7:44SPEAKER_00: Daxon will help you do it.
- 7:45SPEAKER_00: He knows how to use those.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:47SPEAKER_00: Alright, ready?
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:49SPEAKER_00: Ready.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: Aim fire.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's so close.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: You're the closest one.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 7:54SPEAKER_00: Pull it again.
- 7:55SPEAKER_00: You gotta pull it again.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: Yep, you got it.
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: Pull it down.
- 7:58SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 7:59SPEAKER_00: Oh, you gotta push the dart in.
- 8:00SPEAKER_00: It's gonna shoot out.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 8:02SPEAKER_00: Okay, ready.
- 8:04SPEAKER_00: Aim fire.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: Oh, so close.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Alright.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: Will you bring the nerf gun here for me?
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: Alright, so you guys did a very good job.
- 8:13SPEAKER_00: Give them a round of applause for helping us out, and you guys get a sucker each.
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 8:18SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: Thank you very much.
- 8:20SPEAKER_00: There you go, Landon.
- 8:21SPEAKER_00: Alright, very good.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: So I've got a question for you.
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: I've got this Nerf gun.
- 8:30SPEAKER_00: If we don't have eye protection, would it be kind of scary to get shot in the eye with it?
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 8:36SPEAKER_00: But this Nerf gun is only this big, right?
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: So what if I said, would you fear this Nerf gun more?
- 8:45SPEAKER_00: Or if you were gonna be afraid of a Nerf gun, would it be more like this one?
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Look at this one here.
- 8:53SPEAKER_00: Oh, there might bullet bear.
- 8:56SPEAKER_00: This is a 32.
- 8:58SPEAKER_00: I'll show you.
- 8:59SPEAKER_00: Look at this.
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: If I can find it, look.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Alright now.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: You got your your nerf bullets here on your shoulder, right?
- 9:06SPEAKER_00: It's 32 shot, fully automatic.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: Boop, boom, boom, boom, boom! Right?
- 9:15SPEAKER_00: But unfortunately, oh shh.
- 9:22SPEAKER_00: Oh, quiet.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, it takes six nine volt batter uh double D our double R D batteries, which I do not have in it.
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: It was just for an object lesson.
- 9:32SPEAKER_00: I wasn't actually gonna like shoot it.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: But if you if it did have bullets in it, wouldn't this one be a little more scary to go against than this little three-shooter?
- 9:41SPEAKER_00: Yes.
- 9:42SPEAKER_00: Okay, but there's even a more scary one.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: There's even a more scary one.
- 9:48SPEAKER_00: And so a couple years ago, my family got a new Nerf gun.
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: And this Nerf new Nerf gun has a special name.
- 10:02SPEAKER_00: It is called Rival.
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: And let me tell you about this.
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: This one has a clip, and it shoots balls, not darts, has a full clip.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: It has a safety.
- 10:15SPEAKER_00: So, and I saw how hard this shoots.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: Okay, so watch this.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:20SPEAKER_00: So watch this one.
- 10:22SPEAKER_00: This is what I was used to, okay?
- 10:24SPEAKER_00: And I'm not trying to hit anyone, but see how hard this one shoots.
- 10:28SPEAKER_00: Are you ready?
- 10:29SPEAKER_00: Okay, don't get hit.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 10:31SPEAKER_00: There you go.
- 10:32SPEAKER_00: You're right there.
- 10:33SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: So this one you have to fully cock, and I got the safety on.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: You cock?
- 10:41SPEAKER_00: Okay?
- 10:42SPEAKER_00: And are you ready to see how far it goes?
- 10:45SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:46SPEAKER_00: Now I'm gonna try to hit that tree back there, and this might be for adults.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 10:52SPEAKER_00: Does anyone know what kind of tree that is?
- 10:54SPEAKER_00: It's a biblical tree.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: It's a sycamore tree.
- 10:57SPEAKER_00: But ready?
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: Are you guys ready to watch?
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: It won't hurt anyone, I don't think.
- 11:01SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Three, two, one.
- 11:06SPEAKER_00: See how far it goes back there?
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 11:09SPEAKER_00: So it didn't quite hit the tree.
- 11:11SPEAKER_00: But this thing, let me tell you, it is a lot, lot, lot stronger than any other Nerf gun that I ever thought.
- 11:22SPEAKER_00: And so I made a rule with this gun.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: Thank you very much.
- 11:26SPEAKER_00: I made a rule.
- 11:27SPEAKER_00: You cannot shoot people with a rival gun.
- 11:32SPEAKER_00: Now, am I just no fun?
- 11:37SPEAKER_00: No.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: Why I the reason that I told my kids they couldn't shoot anyone with a rival gun was because they might get hurt, even with eye protection.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: But my son Daxon the other day came to me when I came home, he said, Dad, Dad, can we have Nerf guns with a rival gun?
- 11:55SPEAKER_00: And I was like, No, you know that's against girls.
- 11:57SPEAKER_00: He said, But I'll wear eye protection.
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: And I said, No, we're not shooting people with the rival gun because it hurts people.
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: But even if your older siblings, or if like for some reason, Angie and I wanted to have a nerf gun fight with a rival and we're adults and we decide that's what we want to do, I still, Daxon, wouldn't let you do it because I know you don't like to hear it, but you're smaller and it might hurt you more than it would hurt me.
- 12:22SPEAKER_00: Now, am I a mean dad for saying that?
- 12:26SPEAKER_00: Some would say yes, but the reason that I just say that is because of love.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: And the reason that the Bible tells us to fear God isn't because God is some scary, scary guy that wants to smite you.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: He wants to protect you, okay?
- 12:43SPEAKER_00: And he loves us enough to discipline us, he loves us enough to tell us that we need to fear him so that our lives will go better and that we can have a relationship with him.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: Who in here wants to have a relationship with God?
- 12:57SPEAKER_00: Okay, and one way to do that is to learn God's word.
- 13:01SPEAKER_00: So let's see if we remember Proverbs 1, 7.
- 13:04SPEAKER_00: Let's see if we can remember.
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: Are you guys ready?
- 13:05SPEAKER_00: This is the last part.
- 13:06SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: The okay, it's fear, love, or fear, Lord, and wisdom.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Ready?
- 13:14SPEAKER_00: The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: So let's be wise.
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: Let's understand we should fear God, follow his ordinances, and listen to your parents too, because they were put into your house and under your uh to protect you from God, and he gave you parents, and then they give you rules.
- 13:37SPEAKER_00: Maybe you think, oh, it's just them trying to protect us and understand how to fear God.
- 13:41SPEAKER_00: Okay, can you do that?
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: Alright, all right, go back and run back to your seats and get ready for the bounce houses in about 30 minutes.
- 13:51unknown: Alright.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: Y'all hear me okay?
- 13:54SPEAKER_01: Alright, I heard a few people said yes, so I'm feeling positive about it.
- 13:58SPEAKER_01: Let me find something I can put my things on uh because I wasn't prepared.
- 14:04SPEAKER_01: Well, uh, how many of you guys are excited about barbecue?
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I hope that you are.
- 14:11SPEAKER_01: Um we had a great time.
- 14:13SPEAKER_01: We set up the barbecue last night around 5 p.m.
- 14:17SPEAKER_01: Uh, and so the guys back there, shout out to them, have been working all night uh to get meat done for us all.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, we're all pumped full of a lot of coffee.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: Um, I think I drank a whole pot myself plus a uh a bang energy drink, whatever that is.
- 14:37SPEAKER_01: Uh so I told Jason right before I came up here, uh, see, that was a mistake because now I'm starting to get the shakes.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: I told Jason, if I if I fall down and pass out, uh just come up here and pray for the food and send these people to lunch or dinner because it's that good.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: You're gonna wanna you're gonna wanna get it.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: But um I tell you about barbecue because I love barbecue.
- 14:57SPEAKER_01: Who doesn't love barbecue, right?
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Uh I I really love smoke, smoked meat, and I've always kind of lived by this sort of life philosophy that you can never have too much meat.
- 15:09SPEAKER_01: Because in the words of Alan Jackson, if anybody of you, any of you know the country singer Alan Jackson, there we go.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: Alan Jackson says that too much of a good thing is a good a good thing.
- 15:21SPEAKER_01: There it is.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: And and that was my philosophy towards meat.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Uh, how how could you ever go wrong with meat?
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: Right, except for I decided to go on a diet a couple years ago with my wife, where we uh primarily ate protein and fat.
- 15:37SPEAKER_01: I know that sounds weird.
- 15:39SPEAKER_01: But we got rid of the carbs, and we lived in Texas at the time, and so one of the uh best foods that sort of ticked our box of the high protein, high-fat situation was smoked brisket in Texas.
- 15:52SPEAKER_01: And so I'm thinking, all right, this is this is gonna be my life, and it's awesome.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: Uh so I'm eating brisket just about every day, and I had to learn the hard way that sometimes, in fact, too much of a good thing is not necessarily a good thing.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: Right, I didn't feel so well after I ate all that brisket, and instead of learning my lesson, like you think most people would at this point, uh I continued on in this diet and no longer eating brisket because I was sick to death of it.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: Uh, but uh I was starting to see results.
- 16:22SPEAKER_01: I was heading towards kind of the end of this diet that we preset for ourselves, and I started to dream about my favorite carby foods.
- 16:30SPEAKER_01: Uh for me it's pizza and cinnamon rolls.
- 16:34SPEAKER_01: Uh anybody pizza and cinnamon rolls, folks, here?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah?
- 16:37SPEAKER_01: Come on.
- 16:38SPEAKER_01: Come on, give it up.
- 16:39SPEAKER_01: Uh all right.
- 16:40SPEAKER_01: And so uh I I uh we got to the end of this diet, and Lindsay and I decided, okay, we hit our goals, we're gonna celebrate.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: And so we each got ourselves a large pizza, right?
- 16:52SPEAKER_01: And so I proceeded to eat the entire pizza, not having learned my lesson with the brisket.
- 16:57SPEAKER_01: And and you think I would have stopped there, but I didn't.
- 16:59SPEAKER_01: I was so excited to have carbs.
- 17:01SPEAKER_01: Uh, I went out and bought a uh roll of those uh, you know, Pillsbury cinnamon rolls.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: Pillsbury orange cinnamon rolls.
- 17:08SPEAKER_01: Anybody ever had those before?
- 17:09SPEAKER_01: Okay, so I ate the whole pizza, and then I proceeded to eat, whoa, to eat the entire roll of cinnamon rolls as well.
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I learned uh for the second time that sometimes too much of a good thing is not necessarily a good thing.
- 17:25SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Uh, and so had I heard this message and had I read the passage we're going to be reading today, uh, I might have learned this lesson a little sooner because today we're gonna be talking about what happens when a good thing turns into a bad thing.
- 17:42SPEAKER_01: Okay, so we're gonna be looking in the book of Proverbs.
- 17:44SPEAKER_01: So today we are starting a new series entitled Uncommon Sense, in which we're looking at for five weeks the book of Proverbs, various teachings in the book of Proverbs, um and looking at applications from them.
- 18:00SPEAKER_01: And so I chose a passage today uh that I felt was somewhat unique, and that it's maybe not a proverb you've heard often, and maybe it's not a proverb you've heard preached often.
- 18:13SPEAKER_01: And so uh my goal today and choosing this proverb uh is twofold.
- 18:19SPEAKER_01: One, I want to help us apply it to our lives.
- 18:21SPEAKER_01: I think there's some truths in here that are going to really help some of us uh live out some of the truths in this book.
- 18:28SPEAKER_01: Uh, but two, this proverb illustrates, I believe, uh how we ought to approach the book of Proverbs.
- 18:35SPEAKER_01: It's a perfect proverb to understand how we ought to read the book of Proverbs in general and apply them to our lives.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: And just so this is gonna serve as kind of our pilot verse to how you will how I will suggest we read the book of Proverbs uh here on out.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: So we're gonna be looking at Book of Proverbs, chapter 25, verse 17.
- 18:59SPEAKER_01: And we'll just get on into it.
- 19:01SPEAKER_01: Uh the Proverb says this let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have his fill of you and hate you.
- 19:11SPEAKER_01: It's pretty simple.
- 19:12SPEAKER_01: I'll read it one more time since we don't have monitor up here and uh you can't follow along.
- 19:16SPEAKER_01: It says, Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house, lest he have his fill of you and hate you.
- 19:24SPEAKER_01: And so uh this verse has two pictures in it.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Uh it kind of has a negative implication that you can look at it, and it has a neg a positive picture or a positive way that you can look at it.
- 19:35SPEAKER_01: And so the negative picture is of a nagg who has overstayed his welcome.
- 19:42SPEAKER_01: And because he's overstayed his welcome at his friend's or his neighbor's residence, uh, that neighbor now hates him.
- 19:50SPEAKER_01: And that's not good.
- 19:51SPEAKER_01: So there's the there's the negative way to read this uh proverb, and that's totally valid, but there's also a positive aspect to this proverb, uh, and that's namely a friend who is there when necessary, and therefore that friend becomes valuable to his neighbor or to his friend.
- 20:10SPEAKER_01: Uh so these are the two ways you can view this proverb, but it's not meant to be read on its own.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: In fact, Proverb 25, 17 is actually paired with a proverb right before it in verse 16, and so this is what verse 16 says.
- 20:27SPEAKER_01: It says, if you have found honey, eat only enough for you, lest you have your fill of it and vomit it.
- 20:37SPEAKER_01: Okay, uh this is a picture, obviously, it's very clear.
- 20:40SPEAKER_01: Uh, somebody stumbles upon a honey, which I guess if you just stumble upon honey, you got other problems because there's probably bees present, but that's not part of the sermon.
- 20:49SPEAKER_01: Um but uh this person stumbles upon honey, and instead of uh enjoying this beautiful thing, he overindulges in it, and then he becomes sick, and he becomes sick and then vomits.
- 21:02SPEAKER_01: And this verse is a commentary or an illustration on how you're supposed to understand verse 17.
- 21:09SPEAKER_01: In other words, you're supposed to think back to a time.
- 21:13SPEAKER_01: For me, it was smoked meat and pizza and cinnamon rolls, think back to a time in which you over-indulged in something good, and that good thing became somewhat of a bad thing, and you vomited.
- 21:25SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 21:26SPEAKER_01: You're supposed to take that feeling into this next verse where it is not you who is sick, but rather it is your neighbor who is sick, and you are the smoked meat, pizza, and cinnamon rolls.
- 21:40SPEAKER_01: You are the thing making your neighbor sick, and so you're supposed to empathize with this feeling because you know what it's like.
- 21:48SPEAKER_01: And so the thrust of the of these two passages together is basically this.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: Bruce Walkie says in his commentary that the thrust is that familiarity breeds content.
- 22:01SPEAKER_01: Familiarity breeds contempt.
- 22:03SPEAKER_01: You might say this another way.
- 22:04SPEAKER_01: He said it another way, and I appreciate this.
- 22:07SPEAKER_01: He says that guests, like fish, stink after three days.
- 22:15SPEAKER_01: I think I just heard my wife amen somewhere back there.
- 22:18SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 22:19SPEAKER_01: I think probably most of you introverts are amening in your heart, not out loud, because of course you're introverts and you wouldn't do that.
- 22:26SPEAKER_01: Anyways.
- 22:27SPEAKER_01: I think the point is that even sometimes even something as sweet as honey, such as a friendship or neighborliness, can become loathsome in excess.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: And just like some of you are about to find out, uh, even something as good as smoked meat can become loathsome when overindulged.
- 22:49SPEAKER_01: And so also our relationships can also become loathsome with overindulgence.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: And so there's a few ways that we can approach applying this proverb.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: The first is an internal way, it's a more self-centered way of understanding and applying this proverb.
- 23:06SPEAKER_01: And the second way is a more externally focused way of applying and understanding this proverb.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: And so we're gonna look at each of those in turn.
- 23:14SPEAKER_01: And so the internal application, the more self-centered application of this verse looks at the negative picture of the verse.
- 23:21SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 23:22SPEAKER_01: It remembers a nagging friend who has overstayed his welcome and therefore he becomes hated.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: This is the picture that this application seeks to use.
- 23:32SPEAKER_01: And so the idea is that don't do that often.
- 23:38SPEAKER_01: Don't nag your friend to death lest they hate you.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: Don't stay too long in your neighbor's house lest they hate you and your reputation be tarnished, or your future be tarnished.
- 23:50SPEAKER_01: And so it's sort of a sort of a self-centered reasoning.
- 23:55SPEAKER_01: Uh I have a bit of a story that I'm actually somewhat hesitant to tell because it's extremely awkward for me, but I couldn't think of anything better.
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: So here we go.
- 24:02SPEAKER_01: Um I started dating my wife, uh, my now wife, we were married then, obviously, but I started dating her in 2011.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, and and we became very close very quickly.
- 24:14SPEAKER_01: Uh, and I became close with her family very quickly, and I would spend a lot of time uh at her family's house.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Uh I lived 45 minutes away, and Lindsay at the time still lived with her parents, and so I'd spend a lot of time there.
- 24:26SPEAKER_01: And sometimes when the weather was bad, because it's it was Iowa, and sometimes the weather is bad, um, they would say, Hey, why don't you just you know pull up a sleeping bag and sleep on the living room full floor or sleep in our you know guest bedroom, it'll be fine.
- 24:38SPEAKER_01: And so uh, you know, anytime you need a place to stay, you're welcome here.
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 24:43SPEAKER_01: And I said, Okay.
- 24:45SPEAKER_01: So I stayed.
- 24:46SPEAKER_01: Uh fast forward a few months.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: Lindsay takes off to college.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: She moves north about uh an hour away, but I'm still in Des Moines working.
- 24:56SPEAKER_01: And so Lindsay calls me one day because I was working late in Des Moines and she says, Hey, you remember my parents said you can stay with them anytime.
- 25:03SPEAKER_01: Why don't you just go stay with them tonight?
- 25:05SPEAKER_01: Because you know, you don't need to drive home late.
- 25:08SPEAKER_01: And so I said, Oh, that's a great idea.
- 25:09SPEAKER_01: So I kind of awkwardly went to her parents' house alone, and I I stayed the night, right, in the guest bedroom, and and then one night turned into two nights, uh, and then two nights turned into three months.
- 25:22SPEAKER_01: And it turns out I ended, I was just squatting in in uh her parents' spare bedroom awkwardly again.
- 25:28SPEAKER_01: I don't enjoy telling this story, especially because they're probably watching this right now, so this is gonna be about to get real awkward.
- 25:34SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh at one point Lindsay calls me from college and she says, Yeah, we need to talk.
- 25:44SPEAKER_01: Uh my parents called and and they need you to move out.
- 25:48SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, I was horrified.
- 25:51SPEAKER_01: I'm like, you gotta be kidding.
- 25:52SPEAKER_01: I I I had no idea things were going.
- 25:55SPEAKER_01: I mean, I could sense some tension, I could sense there was awkwardness because Lindsay wasn't around and I'm just hanging around their house.
- 26:00SPEAKER_01: I don't know how I didn't sense it, to be honest.
- 26:02SPEAKER_01: It was weird looking back, yes.
- 26:04SPEAKER_01: Uh, but I didn't sense it, but I was horrified because now it was very clear to me that I had overstayed my welcome.
- 26:12SPEAKER_01: I had misread this situation uh entirely uh and found myself in an awkward situation.
- 26:17SPEAKER_01: I was horrified because this was somebody that I was hoping to propose to soon.
- 26:25SPEAKER_01: And now her parents thought I was weird and thought I it was taking advantage of them, and I'm like, oh my gosh, they hate me, and now they're not gonna, you know, give me her hand in marriage.
- 26:34SPEAKER_01: And so that was a horrible thought.
- 26:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, but this is the self-centered reasoning that don't stay too long or somebody hates you.
- 26:40SPEAKER_01: That's a very literal application of this.
- 26:43SPEAKER_01: Um but the point is, any secular person can discern that truth, can they not?
- 26:50SPEAKER_01: Any secular person can look at, I mean, it's sort of common sense.
- 26:54SPEAKER_01: If you nag somebody to death, they probably won't like you anymore.
- 26:58SPEAKER_01: That just is common sense.
- 27:01SPEAKER_01: And common sense don't make really great sermons because we all kind of know these things already, and so uh this is the more internally focused application, but I think my proposition is the book of Proverbs was not intended to be implied self-centeredly.
- 27:18SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: That this that this passage isn't just about the common sense, but there's a a not so easily discernible truth that's actually behind this, that the average secular person can't read this and discern from, but God's people are to read this and to discern this next point, the external application of this text.
- 27:43SPEAKER_01: And this application, this externally focused application, primarily primarily looks at the positive picture, which is the picture of a friend who is there when necessary.
- 27:55SPEAKER_01: And therefore that friend becomes valuable to his friend or valuable to his neighbor.
- 28:01SPEAKER_01: And so I think many people, if if we're honest, we tend to approach the book of Proverbs as a bit of a self-help book, as a book that we go to to fight for our own hopes and dreams, to fight to become a better person.
- 28:15SPEAKER_01: When in reality, the book of Proverbs is a lot more of a book that's giving you instructions on how to fight to be the image bearer of God.
- 28:26SPEAKER_01: It's a book about the character of God and practical wisdom on how you, as his image bearer, as one of his people, can live out his character in the world.
- 28:38SPEAKER_01: And we know that the Lord is not self-centered and arrogant, he rather is sacrificial and he's merciful and he's compassionate and he gives of himself at his own cost for the sake and for the good of others.
- 28:52SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 28:53SPEAKER_01: So this book is not about just let's go read Proverbs and find out how to have a better life.
- 28:59SPEAKER_01: But this book is about let's go read Proverbs and find out how to better represent our Lord, how to better represent the character of God.
- 29:09SPEAKER_01: And so this is very clearly uh illustrated in in verse 17 where he says, Let your foot be seldom in your neighbor's house.
- 29:18SPEAKER_01: Let your foot be seldom in this word seldom, if you look at the text behind the Hebrew text behind it, carries this idea of scarcity, of rarity, but of quality.
- 29:29SPEAKER_01: And so the idea is, it remember, this is not a negative command.
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: He does not say, don't do something.
- 29:35SPEAKER_01: Rather, he says, do this.
- 29:38SPEAKER_01: Go to your neighbor's house rarely, but when you go, allow it to be a quality interaction.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: In other words, add value to your neighbor's life.
- 29:48SPEAKER_01: This is sort of what makes it uncommon sense because self-help books out there, uh, you'll find everywhere in the world self-help books saying things like, uh, add value to people's lives.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: You know, become somebody that's valuable to other people, but the reasoning for it is so that you get to where you want to go.
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 30:10SPEAKER_01: Help people get to that where they want to go so that you can get to where you want to go.
- 30:15SPEAKER_01: And anybody can figure that out.
- 30:18SPEAKER_01: You want to get somewhere, be friendly to people and they'll help you get there.
- 30:22SPEAKER_01: That makes sense.
- 30:23SPEAKER_01: But God's people have a different motive.
- 30:26SPEAKER_01: God's people are to interpret this in a way that says, I'm not here, I'm not going to add value to my neighbor for my sake, but I'm going to add value to them so that they get to where they want to go.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: See, that's the character of God, and that's what we're called to as Christians, and that's what we're how we're supposed to read the book of Proverbs.
- 30:46SPEAKER_01: Uh so for me, uh, I was putting my in-laws in a very awkward position, uh, but I was very focused on the fact that they hated me, I thought, uh, because I was squatting in their house for three months.
- 30:59SPEAKER_01: Unwelcome, I guess, turns out.
- 31:01SPEAKER_01: Um, but it turns out there was another very awkward situation going on behind scenes that I was very unaware of.
- 31:08SPEAKER_01: Uh, see, my in-laws are a strong Christian family, and they were known as a strong Christian family in their neighborhood.
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: And they also knew what car I drove.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: And so when they're looking out the window and they see my car there overnight for longer stays, overnight all the time, not knowing that Lindsay was at college, minds begin to turn.
- 31:29SPEAKER_01: Does Lindsay have a stay-in boyfriend?
- 31:31SPEAKER_01: And I became a bad testimony for them and caused them to be a bad testimony to their neighbors.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: And I realized at this point that this was much bigger than me just not being liked by her family, which turned out not to be the case.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: They're very gracious.
- 31:47SPEAKER_01: Um, but it turned out to be a situation which I needed to do this for them, sacrifice for them for their sake, and for their reputation with their neighbors.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: And so this passage is about sacrificing for your neighbors for their sake, not just so they won't hate you, but rather so that you add value to their lives.
- 32:11SPEAKER_01: Uh, and so I understand that not all of us have neighbor issues, and that some of you are like, you know, some of you guys might have, you know, squatters living on your couch, and you're like, you know, listen to this.
- 32:23SPEAKER_01: Uh that's not everybody here, and I understand that.
- 32:26SPEAKER_01: Uh so I but I want you to see this principle that we've been talking about, that sometimes too much of a good thing is not such a good thing.
- 32:35SPEAKER_01: And I want to take that through and see how how can we take this idea of adding value to somebody's life for their sake and apply it to some similar situations for us.
- 32:44SPEAKER_01: And so I just kind of wrote down some thoughts of things that I felt uh might fit appropriately.
- 32:51SPEAKER_01: Uh, first thing I thought of was somebody who gives too much advice.
- 32:55SPEAKER_01: Anyone hear advice givers?
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: I know some of you out there, I'm an advice giver.
- 33:00SPEAKER_01: Uh it's not so good all the time.
- 33:02SPEAKER_01: Uh, but if you're not an advice giver, chances are you have an advice giver in your life who gives you advice whether you want it or not.
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 33:10SPEAKER_01: And the thing is, advice givers can sometimes become like the boy who cried wolf.
- 33:16SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 33:17SPEAKER_01: They can they can give these gold nuggets of pieces of advice, but it's hidden by all the fact that they're giving you advice in all these areas of your life that you do not care to hear about.
- 33:27SPEAKER_01: And so by the time you get to those little gold nugget truths, you don't care because you've been ignoring them for the last three months.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: And so my ad my my implication, my application to those of you who are chronic advice givers like myself, would be this Let the advice that you do give to people be scarce.
- 33:53SPEAKER_01: Let it be rare, and when you give it, let it be truly valuable.
- 33:59SPEAKER_01: The implication of this practically is that naturally you do the doing this, you will listen more than you talk.
- 34:07SPEAKER_01: I have a problem with this.
- 34:10SPEAKER_01: Right?
- 34:11SPEAKER_01: But we would listen more than we talk, and when we do talk, we make sure that it is rare, well thought out, valuable, and therefore well received, and not just a clanging gong that causes them to be sick of you.
- 34:32SPEAKER_01: Another uh thought I had about this is evangelism.
- 34:36SPEAKER_01: Some of us get some of us get really fired up about sharing the gospel with people, and that's a great thing.
- 34:41SPEAKER_01: That is a great thing, and and but that sometimes we can get so excited about sharing the gospel with people, and we can become so urgent about making sure this person comes to know the Lord uh that we pester people with propositions constantly to believe, to the point where every interaction with them is, hey, believe the gospel, believe the gospel, believe the gospel.
- 35:02SPEAKER_01: But rather, what if you had a regul had regular interactions with that person in which you added value to their lives?
- 35:09SPEAKER_01: And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the gospel does not add value to their lives.
- 35:12SPEAKER_01: But what if you served them and helped them in ways that they needed that were few and rare?
- 35:19SPEAKER_01: And and then in a few scarce but valuable moments, what if you shared with them at those points the value of the gospel?
- 35:27SPEAKER_01: How much more powerful would that be?
- 35:33SPEAKER_01: So those are just some thoughts.
- 35:35SPEAKER_01: Uh if you if you take nothing away, ooh, yikes.
- 35:41SPEAKER_01: We'll fix this.
- 35:43SPEAKER_01: There we go.
- 35:44SPEAKER_01: I don't know what's happening.
- 35:46SPEAKER_01: Well, here's what's happening.
- 35:50SPEAKER_01: How are we doing?
- 35:51SPEAKER_01: We doing, we good?
- 35:53SPEAKER_01: Finished with this?
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: We're good.
- 35:55SPEAKER_01: You can hear me now?
- 35:56SPEAKER_01: Alright, we're good.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Alright.
- 35:57SPEAKER_01: Uh, let me say this.
- 35:59SPEAKER_01: If you take nothing else away from this sermon, uh, because you know what?
- 36:03SPEAKER_01: Sometimes too much of a good thing is not a good thing, and I'm sure you guys have had your fill of meat talking, especially smelling the smoked meat behind you.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: You're like, alright, come on, I'm getting sick.
- 36:12SPEAKER_01: Let's get to the meat.
- 36:13SPEAKER_01: I get it.
- 36:14SPEAKER_01: Uh so if you take nothing else away, uh, take this.
- 36:19SPEAKER_01: Be somebody who adds value to others' life.
- 36:23SPEAKER_01: Not somebody who makes their life more low the sum.
- 36:27SPEAKER_01: And don't do it so that you will get ahead in life.
- 36:31SPEAKER_01: Do it so that they get ahead.
- 36:34SPEAKER_01: Period.
- 36:36SPEAKER_01: Uh so let me just pray for us, real quick, uh, and then we can uh go get our fill of meat.
- 36:43SPEAKER_01: Hopefully not too much.
- 36:44SPEAKER_01: Alright, let's pray.
- 36:45SPEAKER_01: Uh, Father, we thank you for uh just this beautiful day that we can gather together as a church family.
- 36:53SPEAKER_01: Uh we thank you that we can come and share these unique experiences where we can bond and build camaraderie and build just a sense of the fact that we are part of something bigger than ourselves.
- 37:06SPEAKER_01: Lord, and we ask that you would help us to uh be better readers of your word, that you would help us to uh approach the book of Proverbs not not as a book of self-help to make our own lives better, that we'll but that we would see it for what it is, and that is to help us reflect you and to love others well, because you love us so well.
- 37:27SPEAKER_01: And Lord, we thank you so much for this opportunity to break bread together and have a meal uh together.
- 37:33SPEAKER_01: Uh Lord, so much fellowship is had over meals in your word, and and we look forward to having one together uh tonight.
- 37:40SPEAKER_01: So we ask that you would bless this time together in Jesus' name we pray.
- 37:43SPEAKER_01: Amen.
