- 0:06Hello, what's your least favorite scary movie?
- 0:10I admire its purity, a survivor uncluttered by conscience,
- 0:14remorse, or delusions of morality.
- 0:17Welcome to What's Your Lead favorite scary Movie?
- 0:20The podcast where we talk about the good, the bad, the ugly and
- 0:24the absurd and all of our favorite.
- 0:25Family's favorite? Scary movies.
- 0:27Because we believe every horror movie rifely has his fan base.
- 0:30Even if we don't always get it. My name's Travis.
- 0:32My name's Jesse and we we're starting a new franchise, y'all.
- 0:36Yes, we are. Here we are.
- 0:38Yup, we're in space. Yup, we're in alien territory.
- 0:44That's right, we doing some sci-fi horror shit up in here.
- 0:48We're changing it up. We're shaking things up a tad
- 0:50bit. It's going to be good.
- 0:52And hey, you know what? Just as a little bonus thing, in
- 0:55case you aren't aware, we are doing Predator alongside this
- 0:59too. So that way, when we get to
- 1:01Alien versus Predator, it has meaning.
- 1:03Yeah, we have a. Proper crossover going on.
- 1:05We've already covered the first Predator movie, so you know, you
- 1:07can go ahead and listen to that now.
- 1:09But that's all going to start alongside this.
- 1:11But I'm excited. This is going to be cool.
- 1:12So excited. Can't wait for it.
- 1:15All right, just a couple quick announcements.
- 1:17We did do our final destination wrap up over the weekend, so
- 1:20long weekend. So go ahead and go check that
- 1:23out where we did our final rankings.
- 1:26We also did our to be or not to be on Dance of the Dead, so go
- 1:31check that out as well. Yeah, and that pretty much
- 1:34wrapped up our prom month coverage right there, because
- 1:37there's nothing prom about this movie at all, unless you just
- 1:42consider it a gathering of people.
- 1:45No dancing. Yeah, that I remember.
- 1:49Yeah, I, I don't, I don't know. Yeah.
- 1:52So, OK, are we ready to get into this?
- 1:54Thing we are. We are so ready.
- 1:56Let's fucking do it. Okie dokie.
- 1:59So Alien premiered May 24th, 1979.
- 2:04We are like a date. It is today we're recording.
- 2:09We are recording on the day that it premiered on so.
- 2:12Damn, how many years ago was? That 47. 47 years.
- 2:15Happy birthday, Alien. It's crazy.
- 2:18Yeah. It premiered at this Seattle
- 2:20International Film Festival and it had it's that wide release
- 2:24June 22nd, 1979. We watched it on our DVD.
- 2:29If you would like to watch it, you cannot stream it anywhere
- 2:32right now. It got removed from streaming
- 2:33services like it was just recently because I remember it
- 2:37was on HBO. It might show up in June.
- 2:40Don't know about that exactly. Yeah, but as of this moment, it
- 2:45can't be streamed. You have to rinse it if you
- 2:48don't own it. And you can rent it on Amazon,
- 2:50Apple TV, YouTube or a Fandango at home.
- 2:53Written by Dan O'bannon, who did the screenplay in the story, and
- 2:58also Ronald Shusset, who also did the story.
- 3:01Directed by Ridley Scott, music by Jerry Goldsmith and special
- 3:06effects team. We got a slew of people here to
- 3:09acknowledge. So off the bat, we have HR
- 3:12Geiger who did the alien design. Fucking crazy that they got
- 3:16Geiger to do it. Makes a lot of sense.
- 3:19Yeah, Carl Rambaldi, as he, he, the guy that did the alien, he
- 3:24brought it to life. Nick Alder and Brian Johnson
- 3:28were also special effects supervisors on there.
- 3:30And we had Christian Wolf Flamoy, who did the models.
- 3:34All right, because we did a lot of miniature stuff for the ship
- 3:38and all that, and it's all really cool.
- 3:40Starring Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, Tom Skerritt as Dallas,
- 3:44Ian Holm as Ash, John Hart as Kane, Veronica Cartwright as
- 3:49Lambert, Harry Dean Stanton as Brett, Yafik Kato as Parker and
- 3:55Bellagi Badajo as Alien. OK.
- 3:59Time for our favorite game on the show, Budget or bug Ted?
- 4:05I feel like this is 1. I should know, but I don't know.
- 4:07It's gonna be an interesting one.
- 4:08I'm gonna go with budget. Budget, this does meet the
- 4:12budget criteria. So new franchise feel like we
- 4:15need this and every time we start a new one, we have to go
- 4:17over what this means, yes. If you're tuning in for the
- 4:19first time because you're like Alien, anything that is under a
- 4:25$10 million budget, we refer to as Bug Ted.
- 4:27It was just a fun little typo we read online that we ran with.
- 4:30So Bug Ted is $1.00 to $999,999 and budget is 10 million and up.
- 4:38Yep. And this movie meets that
- 4:40criteria. It is an $11 million budget.
- 4:43Yeah, pretty big in 1979. Always opening box office was
- 4:473.5 million, OK, worldwide gross 109 million.
- 4:51Yeah, OK. Yeah.
- 4:53IMDb score 8.5. Fuck yeah.
- 4:56Fucking big fuck yeah. One of the biggest ones we've
- 4:58had. So I have three other movies
- 5:01from 1979 that released that we're going to compare it to.
- 5:03I have a theme and it is Curiosity Killed did not kill
- 5:09the cat, but it killed a lot of other people.
- 5:11I. Like that theme?
- 5:14So First off, we have Phantasm. OK?
- 5:17That is all you know about Little Boise, Old man being
- 5:21creepy in the graveyard and being like, what's that about?
- 5:23Yeah, what's? Going on there.
- 5:25Why? Where, How?
- 5:25When? So that came out March 28th,
- 5:291979 with a $300,000 budget, 11.9 million gross and a 6.6 on
- 5:35IMDb. All right.
- 5:37Movie #2 tourist trap. A lot of people go over there
- 5:41and be like, hey, what's this museum doing, doing over here?
- 5:43What's this? And they get killed.
- 5:48That movie, that movie. Jesse and I have made our
- 5:51thoughts on that pretty well known at this point.
- 5:53We don't care for it. It's OK it's fine I understand
- 5:56why people love it it's fine. I don't but it came out March
- 5:5916th, 1979. Three $150,000 budget worldwide
- 6:04gross of 4 million. Perfect. 6 out of 10 on IMDb
- 6:07all. Right.
- 6:08People like it and the final movie zombie 2 or just zombie
- 6:16the Uchio Fauci movie all right came out it premiered August
- 6:2125th 1979 curiosity in that one is where the fuck is my dad yeah
- 6:27I got to go to this island and get my.
- 6:28Dad Island full of zombies? Yeah.
- 6:31So that came out like I said, August 25th, 1979 budget of 410
- 6:36million lira dollars. Oh, it's Italian.
- 6:40Yep, worldwide gross 3 billion three billion lira, which
- 6:44translated to $1.9 million. It's funny that you, you know,
- 6:49the The thing is, where is my dad?
- 6:51What happened to my dad? And I'm wearing my Halloween 3
- 6:53shirt. Yeah, yeah.
- 6:55Oh, my guys were recording this. Yeah, the IMDb score for that
- 6:586.8 All right, I love that movie.
- 7:01So. Fucking I know you do.
- 7:03All righty, so got tagline. The one on the poster.
- 7:07Super iconic one. Oh yeah, in space, no one can
- 7:11hear you scream. That is a terrifying sentence.
- 7:15It is. Don't like it.
- 7:16I love it, but I don't like it. Yeah, it it makes me
- 7:19uncomfortable. It makes me feel things.
- 7:21And from there, it's like with the rest of the tagline, I got
- 7:24three others here. This one's OK.
- 7:26Sometimes the scariest things come from within.
- 7:30I, I thought that that was pretty good.
- 7:31Right now it's Alien, the 8th Passenger and a word of warning,
- 7:40dot dot .0. OK, yeah, Yep, that's it for
- 7:45taglines. OK, so it's time for us to do
- 7:47Fun Facts. Yeah, fun facts.
- 7:49There was so much shit about this movie, I can't talk about
- 7:52everything, so I'm going to talk about some things.
- 7:54OK, the facts you found the funnest, Yes.
- 7:58So this is really cool. I, I like the story of how this
- 8:01movie came to be. And we're going to take it all
- 8:04the way back to USC college where a little Dan O'bannon was
- 8:08working with another movie with a little John Carpenter.
- 8:12They made a movie called Dark Star, which this is perfect
- 8:16because I didn't know this, I was watching this movie thinking
- 8:19to myself, this is a movie that John Carpenter wanted to make.
- 8:23I I could, I could just feel it, you know.
- 8:27But yeah, so they made that movie together.
- 8:29It was a student film. It involved like an alien thing
- 8:32there to, in the case of that movie, they use a spray painted
- 8:37beach ball and they just attach some claws on it.
- 8:40It was used for comedic effect. So it wasn't serious, but you
- 8:43know, low budget stuff like that.
- 8:45It left Dan O'bannon really wanting to make something with
- 8:49an alien that actually looked real.
- 8:51So that's where this all started.
- 8:53Started working on the script then and there.
- 8:55Then we had Mr. Shasik come along, who was at that time
- 9:00currently working on a movie that would become Total Recall.
- 9:04He was impressed with Dark Star, so he reached out to Dan O
- 9:07Bannon and he wanted to team up on the project together.
- 9:09So they ended up working on that.
- 9:10But midway through this right here, Dan O Bannon got contacted
- 9:15to work on a Dune adaptation that was being filmed over in
- 9:18France, I think it was Paris or whatever.
- 9:22So he went over there and he did that for six months.
- 9:25Unfortunately, the project fell through and this left Dan
- 9:29O'bannon homeless. Oh no.
- 9:32So he went back to LA and he started crashing on chess it's
- 9:35couch and they just continued to work on the script because he's
- 9:39like, I got to sell a spec script to get some money.
- 9:41So I'm going to do this. Let's do this right here.
- 9:44He had a problem though. He didn't know what to do with
- 9:47the second-half of the movie. He knew that he wanted to have
- 9:49the crew wake up in like the middle of mid flight or whatever
- 9:55and like have like the computer telling them to go do something,
- 9:57but they didn't know what exactly or what all was going to
- 10:00happen from there. And she also actually suggested
- 10:04that he take a movie that he was working on also and just use the
- 10:09plot of that for the second-half of the movie, which was
- 10:12basically it was like a war thing where like some gremlins
- 10:15with infiltrated a bunker. So they're like, let's just take
- 10:19that and move it to space. OK.
- 10:22And it's interesting. So like, they were having a hard
- 10:24time making this all like work, but then they made it quick
- 10:28here. I got a quote from Shustad on
- 10:30that right there, says Dan put his finger on the problem.
- 10:34What has to happen next is the creature has to get on the ship
- 10:37and in an interesting way. I have no idea how we could
- 10:41solve that. It can't be that it just snuck
- 10:43in. Then I think the whole movie
- 10:45will come into place in the middle of the night.
- 10:47I woke up and I said, Dan, I think I have the idea.
- 10:49The alien screws one of them. It jumps on his face and plants
- 10:52at seed. And that said, Oh my God, we've
- 10:54got it. We've got the movie.
- 10:56What dream? Was he having, You know, that's
- 11:01fucking crazy. So they were going around, they
- 11:04were pitching at the studios. They pitched it as Jaws in space
- 11:07because Jaws was a huge hit at the time.
- 11:10And, you know, yeah, you're trying to get your movie sold to
- 11:13as many people as possible. Now that I can see that Jaws was
- 11:16huge at the time. That could be Jaws.
- 11:18In space, yeah. I I could see it too.
- 11:21They nearly signed with Roger Corman, almost became a Roger
- 11:25Corman. Oh.
- 11:26Shit. Could have been a completely.
- 11:29Different movie. But they had a friend like,
- 11:31look, I think I can get you some better deals.
- 11:33So they shopped it around a little bit, had a connection
- 11:35with old 20th Century Fox over there and Fox really, really in
- 11:41the market for a sci-fi movie because we had another big movie
- 11:43that hit and run. This time it's Star Wars.
- 11:46Everybody's willing to capitalize on that right there.
- 11:49And Fox, they had no sci-fi scripts in there like on them
- 11:54right there on the table. So they're like, fuck it, let's
- 11:57roll the dice on this right here.
- 11:58Let's do it. Worked out well.
- 12:00Yeah, it did, and they nearly had Spielberg direct this, but
- 12:04he was already busy with other projects.
- 12:05Kind of glad it wasn't Spielberg.
- 12:07Yeah, me too. Again, it wouldn't have had the
- 12:09same. Horror effect that this one has.
- 12:12Although he has, you know, Jurassic Park, you know, and
- 12:16Jaws, obviously, obviously. So he's he's got some experience
- 12:18in that genre. They're just, they're more
- 12:21actiony horror as opposed to like, this.
- 12:24This is the most like, purely distilled horror.
- 12:27Yeah, version of this movie. I agree.
- 12:30So in the search of directors, they looked over at Ridley
- 12:33Scott, who had only made one film at this time, but they
- 12:35really liked it and they're like, hey, let's give him a
- 12:37chance. So that's how he got there.
- 12:40He got so bored waiting for them to finalize the budget for the
- 12:45movie that he storyboarded the entire movie, including like
- 12:48designs of costume, like the space suits and all kinds of
- 12:50shit like that. And like he sent that to them
- 12:54while they were doing that and they saw that and then they
- 12:56ended up doubling the budget just based off of his
- 12:59storyboards alone. So Scott actually wrote several
- 13:03pages of back story for the each character to help the actors
- 13:06actually have an understanding of them and get in character for
- 13:09everything, which I thought was kind of cool.
- 13:11I would be interested to read that and wonder if it's
- 13:13available. I did not do any searching of
- 13:15that myself. Now, I don't know if you found
- 13:18this in your background, but I swear I read somewhere that the
- 13:21script didn't specify if any of these characters were male or
- 13:24female. And so they just had folks read
- 13:27for the roles that they got, and that just ended up being, you
- 13:32know. I have a house cast.
- 13:34I've heard that too, specifically about Ripley.
- 13:36Like it was like a generalist role.
- 13:38I I didn't see that myself. And in fact, something that may
- 13:42contradict that is like they brought in pretty much
- 13:45exclusively women to read for Ripley.
- 13:48Interesting. Yeah, 'cause like they were.
- 13:50I was reading a thing that like Sigourney Weaver's like her
- 13:55screen test for that, like really, really stood out to
- 13:57them. But yeah, it was it was just
- 14:00women that they had for that right there.
- 14:02OK. I guess Speaking of that, this
- 14:03is a one thing that I was going to, like share later, but it was
- 14:06between her and Meryl Streep for the role.
- 14:09Dude, I know. Again, completely different
- 14:11movie right there. But yeah, they didn't give it to
- 14:14Meryl Streep because she was mourning, though, like, death of
- 14:16her husband or partner at the time, too, which I think it's
- 14:19kind of like, you know, maybe she needed a win, man.
- 14:23You know, like give her. Like Meryl Streep's doing fine
- 14:25without having. She's doing OK.
- 14:27She's doing OK. OK.
- 14:31So if you were wondering why did Travis not credit Jonesy in the
- 14:36cast here, it's because they had four cats play Jonesy.
- 14:40How did they get 4 orange cats into a space and not have the
- 14:43Dum Dums just constantly bonking heads together like coconuts?
- 14:47Movie magic. I have no idea how they made it
- 14:49happen, but they did. So I don't have one cat to point
- 14:52to for that role right there. All right, I do have an
- 14:55interesting thing. So as they were working on the
- 14:58movie, so Corny Weaver learned that she is allergic to cat.
- 15:03Oh. No, and she's also allergic to
- 15:05the glycerin that was used to make the fake sweat.
- 15:07Oh no. So this really sucks because her
- 15:11whole thing is she's saving the cat.
- 15:13And she's really sweaty while she's.
- 15:14Doing that, Yep. So instead they're like, she
- 15:18braved it, she toughed it out with the cat, but they went with
- 15:21a different thing for the sweat. Good for that.
- 15:24Yeah, wasn't a pleasant experience, but she made it
- 15:28through. Originally, it was going to end
- 15:31with Ripley escaping, and nothing was going to happen.
- 15:34Like it was going to, like, they get on the escape pod, That's
- 15:36it, It's over. But really, Scott really, really
- 15:39wanted there to be a fourth act in which she, like, has a
- 15:42confrontation with the alien on the space pod.
- 15:44So he negotiated a budget increase and a extra set of days
- 15:50to film that right there. And, you know, he won.
- 15:52He wanted it to end with the alien biting her head off and
- 15:56then recording the final log with her voice would have been
- 16:03really, really creepy. But the producers did not want
- 16:06that. They wanted the alien to die.
- 16:07So they vetoed that. OK, OK.
- 16:12Sorry, I have a thought, but I like that'll be better when we
- 16:14start. Discussing, OK.
- 16:16And just some final thing, just some additional cast.
- 16:18So I already talked about Meryl Streep being considered for the
- 16:22role. But another thing Harrison Ford
- 16:23could have been Dallas, but he turned down the role.
- 16:27He got really annoyed really quickly being like pushed into
- 16:32the the Hon hole. True, but he ended up, I think,
- 16:35regretting it because he ended up working with Ridley Scott on
- 16:38another sci-fi movie, Blade Runner, just like a few years
- 16:40later at that point. So you know, he made it.
- 16:44He made it work. I think that guy's OK, too.
- 16:47I think he did OK. I think he's fine, yeah.
- 16:49I think he's OK with that alien. All right.
- 16:51And that's all I had room for on my sheet.
- 16:53There is so much more to go over with this right here, but we
- 16:57don't have the time or the resources to do so.
- 16:59So we're just going to get into it and share our thoughts of the
- 17:02movie now. And Jesse, that means you kick
- 17:04it off. What did you like?
- 17:06I mean, this movie is just damn near perfect.
- 17:10Like it's just so solid. It gets tense right from the
- 17:14beginning. I like that.
- 17:16This is not like we've got the scientist on board.
- 17:20He is a robot and we don't know that yet.
- 17:23So I like that we have plausible reasoning.
- 17:27I forgot that that was a twist, that even to the characters in
- 17:29the movie, I thought that they were aware that he was like a
- 17:33robot. Like, no, I, I remembered that
- 17:36that was a twist. I just like, because that's
- 17:40something that would come up in the later movies.
- 17:41It's like, why are scientists behaving this way?
- 17:44And I have thoughts about that, that we'll get to months down
- 17:48the line. But for this, it makes sense.
- 17:50They they have to do this. They have to do it as part of
- 17:53their contract. Nobody really wants to do it,
- 17:55but they've got to go investigate what appears to be a
- 17:57distress signal. And then things are happening.
- 18:00People are panicking. The science officer is okaying
- 18:02this. We don't know at this point that
- 18:04he's got nefarious, you know, motivations like just
- 18:09everything. The story.
- 18:10I like that they didn't force a way to get the alien on board.
- 18:14They let it come to them. They did that in a really,
- 18:17really like, well thought out way.
- 18:19Yeah, like. It's kind of insane that it came
- 18:21from him. Having a dream is like the alien
- 18:23fucks its face. Yeah.
- 18:25And like, I, I've read some really good articles like that,
- 18:29you know, are kind of dissecting this as like, like, like a
- 18:33metaphor for sexual assaults. Oh, OK.
- 18:37So those are if I remember, I'll try and find some of the
- 18:39articles and put them in the show notes, but if they're not
- 18:41there, don't be mad. Interesting.
- 18:43Yeah, I. Forgot, but yeah, I I thought
- 18:46that was really interesting. It's so tense.
- 18:48I like that the cat lives and I like that it's a whole, like
- 18:52it's a main thing. Everybody's trying to keep the
- 18:55cat alive. Yeah, yeah.
- 18:57And I think that's great. I like, it's just such a good.
- 19:01And you've got such a different cast of characters there.
- 19:05They all have personality traits, but they're subtle.
- 19:11Like we don't get them shoved in our faces.
- 19:13It's there in a way that a crew that has been working together
- 19:16for months. There's a cool thing that I was
- 19:18reading that like a lot of people appreciate about this
- 19:21movie, like Roger Ebert commented on it, but it's like
- 19:24that the crew felt real. And the reason that it felt real
- 19:28is because they cast it like age appropriate is, you know, like
- 19:31made a point that like I hadn't even really considered that kind
- 19:34of is like a thing for future movies of this too.
- 19:36But like a lot of these movies like thriller type movies tend
- 19:40to cast younger actors and. Or people that can pass as
- 19:44younger. Yeah, exactly.
- 19:45And, you know, like with this right here, I think like having
- 19:48that older crew, like Dallas is a dude in his 40s.
- 19:51So Courtney Weaver is the youngest one, and she's 28.
- 19:53Yeah, and it makes sense. Like that's this is, you know,
- 19:58it's it's, you know, a commerce job, but you know, it still
- 20:01requires specialized skills. I like the arguments that
- 20:04they're having about the bonuses and the pay structure.
- 20:07And you know, we've got a little bit of like that woven into
- 20:11this, which is great because this whole thing, spoiler for my
- 20:13Ugly is just kind of a fuck you to capitalism.
- 20:16It's weirdly grounded for a sci-fi.
- 20:19Yes, and it's just it, it isn't trying to be a space movie.
- 20:24It is just a horror movie set in space.
- 20:26And I think that is part of what makes this movie so good.
- 20:29It is tense throughout. You never know what's going to
- 20:33happen next, which keeps you on the edge of your seat and it
- 20:37ends in victory. But it's scary.
- 20:39And this is the thing I was going to say, 'cause I saw
- 20:40somebody talking about how the Xenomorph is like very playful.
- 20:45And I like that. That kind of mirrors Jonesy.
- 20:48Like he's got, like they're foils to each other, almost like
- 20:52Jonesy is a sweet little baby, but he needs protection because
- 20:55again, he's an orange cat. They've got it.
- 20:59They've got to get him. They've got a resume.
- 21:01He's got his special space cat carrier.
- 21:03And then you've got the Xenomorph, on the other hand,
- 21:07who is also like playful and conniving, but is mean and
- 21:13doesn't need anybody to look out for it.
- 21:15And it's trying to take these people out.
- 21:17And I find that just so fascinating to make the foil to
- 21:21our bad guy. A dumb cat.
- 21:26And it's great because like somebody was talking about the
- 21:28way it's like curled up in the escape shuttle at the end, very
- 21:32cat like. It is, yeah.
- 21:33You're. Right, very playful and it just
- 21:35like the way it pops out at her. Like God, how many times have
- 21:39our cats done that to us? You got to think also in the
- 21:42context here, this is your morph's a kitten.
- 21:44It's got kitten energy, you know, It's running around just
- 21:46playing with shit. That shit is Cordelia who is
- 21:48screaming at our door right now and.
- 21:50I'm sure y'all can hear it's, you made a comment last night.
- 21:55Like, like, you're like the cat. Like xenomorph is kind of like a
- 21:58cat. I'm like, Oh my God, Cordelia is
- 22:00kind of like a Xenomorph. Yeah.
- 22:02The way that she operates and runs around and just, like,
- 22:05attacks shit just out of the blue.
- 22:06You like that is like a fucking xenomorph for Cordelia.
- 22:10In this case, yeah, it's pretty. Cordelia But yeah, I just, I
- 22:16could go on all day about how excellent this movie is, but it
- 22:20it's just great. Yeah, For me, like this movie is
- 22:25it's so good at building tense moments and it's just a lot of
- 22:30slow dread. And it's that thing that you can
- 22:33relate to, like, but also like, it's very like extraordinary
- 22:38things. Like I love whenever they do the
- 22:41thing like where they like land on the planet and like they
- 22:44breakdown and the way that they handle it's all very like
- 22:46grounded and like realistic response.
- 22:48They're all like, well, it's just like fucking fix in there.
- 22:50Like we got a job to do type mentality, stuff like that.
- 22:53But like when the. Bonuses are on the line that is
- 22:56really the motivator for. That exactly, Yeah, yeah.
- 22:59And but when they're on the planet and the scale of
- 23:02everything, when they see that ship and they enter that ship
- 23:05and like they are so tiny next to that like skeleton that's
- 23:09sitting in the chair that is like.
- 23:11That has exploded from the inside out.
- 23:14Yeah, it is just fucking crazy. And the interesting thing I was
- 23:18reading about that is like to make that stuff look bigger that
- 23:22they actually use, I think is Ridley Scott's children, like in
- 23:25the space suits to like make them be smaller, you know?
- 23:29But it is so effective. It's like, I can't, I don't know
- 23:35what the phobia is, but it's like, it's like that phobia of
- 23:38like, you know, just like you see something like in the
- 23:41distance and it's like gigantic and like, guy, what is that?
- 23:45Come on, you're gonna look it up, OK?
- 23:49The fear of big things is called megalophobia.
- 23:52Megalophobia, an intense, irrational anxiety triggered by
- 23:54massive structures like skyscraper statues or dams,
- 23:57large vehicles, ships and planes, or vast natural
- 23:59phenomenon such as mountains, oceans and giant animals.
- 24:04It triggers that in me whenever I see that stuff right there I.
- 24:07Didn't see that. Yeah, it's just really, really
- 24:09horrifying. But I just, I like the whole
- 24:13crew here. Like it's a fun team of people
- 24:16to like follow for this. And it's just scary.
- 24:20Like I, I like that the alien stalks, you know, like it is
- 24:25such an effective horror movie character.
- 24:27Changing. Yeah, changing as it's going
- 24:30through. It's just such an interesting
- 24:32concept, man, like and it was so well executed, the design of
- 24:36everything. Also one of my favorite things.
- 24:38I love the retro futuristic tech and I feel like this is the
- 24:42movie that people try and emulate when they go for it.
- 24:44Like back then, like when people were trying to do that like
- 24:49this. Like this movie has had like a
- 24:50lot of influence on like Dragon Ball designs for like futuristic
- 24:53stuff, you know, It's really, really cool and they did a great
- 24:57job. Like this movie is just so well
- 25:00put together, do you have anything bad to say?
- 25:04Nitpick OK, just a nitpick. And again, I understand that
- 25:08this becomes a challenge because the crew is supposed to feel.
- 25:12I guess lived in is the word you could use for it, but it makes
- 25:15it really hard to get the character name.
- 25:17Intros might not bother you as much if you're not taking notes,
- 25:21but. I didn't know Lambert for a long
- 25:23time. Yeah, and I only got half the
- 25:25names because of the captions. If they weren't on the captions,
- 25:29like showing somebody was seeing something, I wouldn't have known
- 25:31who it was. It took a while before anybody
- 25:33referred to people by their name.
- 25:35So that that's just a little little gripe that I know I've
- 25:39shared on the show before. And what do you do about it?
- 25:42It's kind of hard because you need to make those feel natural,
- 25:45like you don't want it to be, you know, you don't want it to
- 25:50feel forced. Yeah, And it definitely doesn't
- 25:52feel forced on this. But it also takes a while before
- 25:54we have like, set, OK, this is who this person is.
- 25:58This is who this is so. OK, I I'm struggling to think of
- 26:04anything myself to say that's bad about this movie.
- 26:07I I can't find anything that I would nitpick.
- 26:11I I hate that. I wish I had something I could
- 26:13say, but I I don't have anything I can say.
- 26:15It sucks. So what's the ugly?
- 26:19Capitalism, the the the mission. They're literally like anybody
- 26:24can be sacrificed, it's fine, just bring back the alien life.
- 26:27Expendable. It's that's fucked.
- 26:30Yeah, I know that. Is fucked.
- 26:32Yeah, that was the. Thing, and it's for the big war
- 26:34machine too, so there's an extra layer of a key to it.
- 26:39Yeah, that was a thing for me too.
- 26:40Just the fact that they forced them to like, do this shit.
- 26:43Like it was so calculated and they're so deceived by the whole
- 26:48thing because they just think, oh, just check out this random
- 26:51thing over here, you know? I think there's also something a
- 26:53little bit icky about the system being called mother.
- 26:56Like I feel like there's a psychological bit to it to make
- 27:01you not want to disobey the program.
- 27:04Maybe. Ship.
- 27:05Yeah, you could be on to something with that, I think.
- 27:09Like the whole fucking face hugger thing is just ugly.
- 27:12Holy shit. I I can't imagine a worse way to
- 27:16go. That is horrifying.
- 27:18Just the fact that they like, oh God, it's like it's spider like
- 27:22how did? He how did he not get glass all
- 27:25over his fucking face? That's.
- 27:27A great question. I have no idea.
- 27:29He didn't even. Maybe he did and the the face
- 27:33over just cleared it all off for him.
- 27:34He doesn't remember shit. Yeah.
- 27:37All right, absurd. At the end when she can't
- 27:42override the self detonation so she's just like fuck it, got to
- 27:47run to the shuttle, just got to hope that I can get past the
- 27:49alien and she takes Jonesy's cat care and just chucks it across.
- 27:54The Room. I'm like I get it but also damn.
- 27:58Yeah, I mean, we got to get out of here.
- 28:00Yeah, I get it too. For me it was when Ash called
- 28:05the as like the alien Kane's son.
- 28:08That's Oh my. God.
- 28:10You got hung up on that for a little bit.
- 28:12Kane's son. Like for the next few scenes,
- 28:15whenever it would pop up, you'd be like, there's Kane's son.
- 28:17Shut the fuck up. You're a robot.
- 28:18You don't know. You don't fucking know.
- 28:22I don't know, maybe mother is Ash's mother.
- 28:26I maybe, you know, maybe you're right yeah, I guess he probably
- 28:30does see it that way. Yeah.
- 28:32Also, Speaking of ash, ashes, sweat.
- 28:35What was that shit? I thought he was melting.
- 28:38I thought I like, I forgot I thought like the aliens like
- 28:40dripping like the acid on him and he was like coming on apart,
- 28:43but it's like fucking like fucking clay just rolling down
- 28:47his face. I'm.
- 28:48Not going to say what the sweat looks like, but I think we all
- 28:51know what it looks like. I think we all know.
- 28:56And that's, you know, not beating the allegations of the
- 28:59metaphor theory that I brought up.
- 29:00Really. I guess you're right.
- 29:02Yeah. And then the fact that on the
- 29:06ship they just spray fire with the flamethrower all Willy
- 29:10nilly, all over the walls, all over everything.
- 29:12But no, like, regard for the ship's well-being.
- 29:16And it it's fine, it doesn't hurt anything.
- 29:19I'm surprised that it doesn't create like an explosion in and
- 29:24of itself because. All the technology and shit.
- 29:27And like the, the pressurization and whatnot that must exist in
- 29:31the ship, you know, that's not, that's not fresh air, that's
- 29:34just moving about. Yeah, I just, I was really
- 29:37shocked that they're just so liberal with their flame usage.
- 29:41So it's a little shocking. And you know, it's funny because
- 29:44you mentioned John Carpenter earlier, but like, I really got
- 29:48so many thing vibes I did from it up to and including the
- 29:53flamethrower. Yeah, maybe he saw that.
- 29:55This movie, He's like, shit, I wanted to do that.
- 29:57I can't make it in space. Space is coming to Earth then
- 29:59God damn it made a good movie out of it at least.
- 30:04I think I know what we're both going to rate this.
- 30:06Yeah, me too. It's a 10.
- 30:07Of course. This is a fucking fantastic
- 30:09movie, man. How do you give it anything
- 30:11besides A10? I'm sure people do.
- 30:14Obviously the IMDb is only 8.5. Yeah, I've had to pull a
- 30:18negative review for this, so you know I'm.
- 30:20Interested to see what you were able to find.
- 30:21All right. So we have a 10 starting
- 30:23average. OK.
- 30:25Here we go. Let's fucking do it.
- 30:28So we start off, we get the THX logo which we just.
- 30:35It is the sound of so many, like childhood traumas, like all of
- 30:43the scariest movies I watched when I was younger that THX.
- 30:47And it's so weird. It's like it's a flex before the
- 30:50movie starts. It's like we can get this loud,
- 30:52OK? Like this is how big we can get.
- 30:55OK, I gotta tell this story real quick.
- 30:57So when IMAX first came around, it was getting real popular.
- 31:00We went to one during some downtime when we were away for a
- 31:05dance competition and Carolyn was super afraid of storms at
- 31:09the time. And IMAX used to love to flex
- 31:11their sound system but like playing a thunderstorm and
- 31:15Carolyn lost her fucking shit in the theatre.
- 31:18She was so scared of the fake storm.
- 31:21So IMAX, I guess it's pretty realistic.
- 31:23Yeah, I've never been to an IMAX movie, so I've never experienced
- 31:27that. I'm sure it'd be cool A.
- 31:28Lot of my dance competitions were in Nashville, so yeah.
- 31:32So OK, we have commercial towing vehicle, the Nostromo Nostromo.
- 31:38Nostromo. Nostromo, we have a crew of
- 31:40seven people. Cargo is refinery processing.
- 31:44We got 20 million tons of minerals.
- 31:47Mineral ore. Mineral.
- 31:48Ore, of course, returning to Earth.
- 31:51On the way to Earth. Yep, Yep, Yep.
- 31:53So a message comes through on the computer and we, we don't
- 31:56know what the message means just yet, but all of the sleep pods
- 32:00open and everybody gets out and they have what apparently is a
- 32:03terrible breakfast. Yeah, they're they're
- 32:05complaining about it, but man, I love some breakfast food so.
- 32:09Too, man. Some of it was just cereal.
- 32:11I was like, did the cereal get stale?
- 32:13I like some cereal. Cereal's great.
- 32:15And then they, they start talking about the bonuses cause
- 32:18Parker and Brett are making less than everybody else because
- 32:21they're quote UN quote, just like the service guys, the
- 32:25maintenance guys. Their job?
- 32:27Is just as important, Yeah. They're the only reason they get
- 32:30back in the yeah. So I'm, I'm on their side, but
- 32:34they're like, well, you should have negotiated it in your
- 32:36contract. Yeah.
- 32:38So so Dallas goes and he chats with interface 2037.
- 32:42Is that the year that the 6th place I can't?
- 32:44I'm not sure I I don't know. It's probably further in the
- 32:47future I think. But he says, what's the story,
- 32:49mother? I like how he can be so casual
- 32:51getting the you get the. Details.
- 32:54Yeah, And so everybody else is logging into their systems.
- 32:58They're trying to contact traffic control because they're
- 33:01they were in hypersleep. You know, they're supposed to be
- 33:03woken up when it's getting close to being home.
- 33:06So that's why they're all excited and talking about their
- 33:08payday. They're all feeling good.
- 33:11Parker and Brett are downstairs. They're only getting half the
- 33:14bonus that is. Yeah, that's some shit.
- 33:17That is some shit and. Then Dallas gathers everyone and
- 33:21he's like, so I'm sure you guys realized we're we're not, we're
- 33:25not home. Oh, I don't know if you caught
- 33:27this, but they were trying to get your traffic control in
- 33:29Antarctica. Oh yeah, I think.
- 33:30So yeah, the thing, the thing. More, the thing intensifies.
- 33:35Yeah, the thing in thingifies. So mother intercepted a
- 33:40transmission. It sounded like like an SOS,
- 33:44Yeah, woke them up to check it out.
- 33:47And they all start arguing. So like, dude, we're fucking,
- 33:49we're towing ship, we're not rescue services, we're not
- 33:52anything like that. And the contract states that if
- 33:56they don't check out any kind of a transmission that mother deems
- 34:00important to check out, they don't check any kind of distress
- 34:03signal that qualifies as forfeiture of their shares.
- 34:07That's fucking sickening. Fuck fucked.
- 34:12Up. So they're like, we got to do
- 34:15it. Yeah, so they have a really
- 34:17rough landing. Three of the four cells are
- 34:18gone, the secondary loading units out.
- 34:20It's going to take about 25 hours to fix for Brett and
- 34:23Parker, who are getting half the amount of money that everyone
- 34:26else. The terrain of that area on the
- 34:28planet is so fucking bad. That's winds.
- 34:31It's cold. It's like also hot.
- 34:33I don't know because like the floor is lava.
- 34:36Well, not lava, but made from lava.
- 34:40And there's also like a bunch of shit in the air that makes it
- 34:42pretty much like unsustainable, like.
- 34:45Bretton Parker are downstairs. They're really unamused because
- 34:48Ripley comes down to check them out.
- 34:49She's third in command, I think. So she's, you know, doing what
- 34:54she's doing because the other, the two in front of her in line
- 34:58are going out on foot. So we have Lambert, Dallas and
- 35:03Kane that decide they're gonna go out 'cause the signal is
- 35:06within walking distance. So that's why they make this
- 35:09decision. They suit up and they go out,
- 35:11they find the ship and they are talking to Ash as they're going
- 35:16through. But they end up losing
- 35:18connection with him like it's going in and out and they do
- 35:22lose that that transmission link with him inside we find like we
- 35:27were talking about before. Big old skeleton.
- 35:29Big old skeleton kind of exploded from the inside out.
- 35:33That's creepy. It's.
- 35:35Fossilized too, so it happened a long time ago, whatever went
- 35:37down here. Meanwhile, on the ship, Ripley
- 35:40has looked at the transmission and how Mother has started
- 35:43translating it. It's not completely done, but it
- 35:45looks less like an SOS and more of a warning, which I think you
- 35:53know, when you were reading the tag lines, one of them said
- 35:56something about a warning. Yeah, I feel like that almost
- 35:59gives it away a little. Bit probably, yeah, a little
- 36:02bit. But you know something bad is
- 36:03going to happen in this movie, I guess.
- 36:06So Kane in the in the ship that they're looking through, he
- 36:11finds an area filled with eggs and it's kind of shrouded by a
- 36:15mist. And he says the mist appears to
- 36:16react if you like, touch it, get through it in any way.
- 36:19And then he immediately eats shit and falls through.
- 36:24So he he continues to walk around, he sees the eggs there
- 36:27and he goes over to 1. He these.
- 36:29Eggs are so creepy. The shells are like translucent
- 36:32so you can see the creatures. They're in there moving around.
- 36:34Yeah, it's really unsettling, but he's super fascinated by it
- 36:38and he's just like, checking it out.
- 36:40One of them opens up from the top.
- 36:42I would get the fuck away from there, but he's like, what's
- 36:45inside that? And it's a fucking facehugger.
- 36:49It just jumps out and attacks him, and I like that we're
- 36:52watching this in 2026 when we have the language to describe
- 36:55these creatures. Yeah, right.
- 36:57Yeah. So Dallas and Ash bring him back
- 37:00and they're demanding that Ripley open the the chamber and
- 37:05she's like, he's got a quarantine for 24 hours.
- 37:07And Dallas is saying this is a direct order, open the door, he
- 37:11won't make it if we can't get him to the Infirmary.
- 37:13And she says no protocols to quarantine him for 24 hours.
- 37:17Ripley was right. Ripley was goddamn right.
- 37:20Yeah, I mean, it's a it's a harsh call to make.
- 37:22It's harsh, but she was correct. Yeah.
- 37:25But Ash does it anyways. Yeah, so we got Kane on board
- 37:31and they've got him in the little first response area or
- 37:35whatever. They're tending to him.
- 37:37They can't get the thing off his face.
- 37:39It's. Just like stuck on there.
- 37:40It's stuck on there and they're worried it's going to kill him
- 37:42if they try and pull it off. They put him into like a
- 37:44scanner, X-ray, cat scan, whatever type of thing and they
- 37:48see that it seems to be feeding him oxygen.
- 37:51It's almost got him like intubated.
- 37:52It's in his throat. It's so fucking.
- 37:56I hate that so much. And they try to like cut it off
- 38:01or like try and get it but. Dallas says he'll take
- 38:03responsibility if something goes wrong.
- 38:05Yeah. And they try to, like, cut it
- 38:07and like, it just bleeds acid. And when that happens, it starts
- 38:11eating through the forest. So they're like having to track
- 38:14the acid. They're like, fine.
- 38:15What's? Their plan because they're like,
- 38:16he's going to get through the. Hole I thought that they had
- 38:18like a bin or something like catcher that was like, you know,
- 38:21something that like can like actually it was stand acid like
- 38:24things can and they they didn't. They're just, I don't know what
- 38:27the plan. Was.
- 38:28That's a whole plot line and Breaking Bad, right?
- 38:31Yeah, yeah. It's like a well, yeah, yeah.
- 38:37But it stops on its own. Yeah, it eats through a floor
- 38:40slash ceiling, but it doesn't get to the hole.
- 38:43Ash Ripley confronts Ash and she's like, why did you open the
- 38:47door? He goes well, as a direct order
- 38:49from Dallas. And then he says that the
- 38:52facehuggers went tough. Little son of a bitch.
- 38:54Yeah, well, it's really interesting here because like
- 38:56he's like, wow, I was just following an order.
- 38:58It's like, whoa, she's like, well, technically I was in
- 39:01charge because I was on the ship and you, you ignored my direct
- 39:05order and. She's also quarantined as part
- 39:08of policy and procedure. Yeah, this is interesting.
- 39:11After you know what happens because, like, he shouldn't be
- 39:14able to ignore those commands. Yeah, he should be programmed to
- 39:17know, like. But he's like, oh, I forgot you
- 39:20were in charge, like. And this is one of those things,
- 39:22you know, some movies, like when you find twist, it doesn't work
- 39:25as well on a rewatch. This just opens up more and more
- 39:29questions. Yeah, right.
- 39:30And it makes you appreciate so many little things so much.
- 39:33Better. So Ash calls Dallas.
- 39:37He's like, he need to come see Kane.
- 39:39And he's like, what's the update on him?
- 39:41He's like, it's just easier if you come see him.
- 39:43And so Dallas calls for a blue to come up, too.
- 39:45Face hacker's gone. It just left his body.
- 39:48I hate that. Yeah.
- 39:49That's terrifying. Nope, It's like when when you
- 39:53find a spider in the house and you go to go get a shoe to
- 39:56squish it and you come back and it's.
- 39:58Gone don't say that I don't want.
- 40:02That so they're looking around for it and it falls on Ripley.
- 40:08It seems dead. Ash wants to bring it back.
- 40:13He's like, it's clearly not a zombie.
- 40:16Like it's obviously dead and Ripley's like it bled acid.
- 40:20So I don't think you know if it's a zombie or not.
- 40:23Ash, maybe calm down. Also, this isn't goddamn
- 40:25protocol. We weren't even supposed to let
- 40:27Kane back on the ship for another like 20 hours.
- 40:32So yeah, they're they're just checking and examining the
- 40:35corpse. He he really wants to bring it
- 40:37back. He's like, this is like a chance
- 40:39to, you know, examine alien life form, like for science's sake.
- 40:44And the scientist in me is like, I get it.
- 40:47I get it too. Maybe wait until you're back on
- 40:50Earth. Yeah, but also like the rule
- 40:53follower in ME is like protocols exist for a reason.
- 40:57Yeah, yeah, I get it. Yeah.
- 40:58So they take off. They're returning back to the
- 41:01mothership and the quarantine cane.
- 41:04Yeah, but it's kind of too late. Dallas, OK, is bringing the
- 41:08body, the supposed body, the shell, whatever, back.
- 41:12And when Ripley's like, dude, what the what the fuck?
- 41:15Like, why? This is not how any of this is
- 41:17supposed to go. Goes well, this is a science
- 41:20thing. I'm referring to the science
- 41:22officer, I guess. So like you trust your trust
- 41:26your cruise specialties. Like I get that.
- 41:29And she goes well. How well do you even know Ash
- 41:31and goes well, I've done five other trips with a different
- 41:33science officer. They replaced him two days
- 41:35before this one went out. So I don't know Ash at all
- 41:39basically. Sketchy.
- 41:41Yeah, should should make you go. Ship is fixed, they take off and
- 41:48then as they're flying about, they argue about what they're
- 41:51going to do with Kane and Lambert's like we are 10 months
- 41:55from Earth, like it's going to take us a while to get there.
- 41:58We need to figure something out. And Ash once again calls to come
- 42:02see Cain and he's like, it's just, it's just easier if you
- 42:05come see it just. Fucking say it.
- 42:06Just say. He's.
- 42:07Awake. Yeah.
- 42:08Why? Like you got to see this shit.
- 42:10Like he's just yeah, he's awake. He's the one to talk about Ash.
- 42:13For a Robot is pretty fucking theatrical.
- 42:16He really is. Yeah, guys.
- 42:18Man, man, Can you imagine if they had like written an AI
- 42:23movie back in 1979? If this team had written that,
- 42:26they would have been like AI, so creative, so great.
- 42:29Well, I mean, shit, look at 2001, A Space Odyssey, like
- 42:32giving AIA lot more credit than what we currently have going on.
- 42:37Yeah. This guy stinks.
- 42:40Kane is awake, he's talking. He can't remember anything that
- 42:43happened to. Him.
- 42:44He just dreamt that he was being smothered.
- 42:47He's hungry though. He hungry?
- 42:51Are we hungry? I guess fuck the quarantine.
- 42:55Yeah, so I mean, they're like, whatever, let's eat and let's
- 42:58get some cryosleep because we got 10 more months.
- 43:00So they start eating and everything is going pretty
- 43:03smooth, but then all of a sudden Kane starts to get tummy ache.
- 43:07He's like coughing, seems like he's seizing.
- 43:10They lay him out on the table and they're trying to figure out
- 43:12what to do and then. It's a little baby in.
- 43:18There and Ash says don't touch it and it runs off.
- 43:22It just scoots across the table. Yeah, it's so funny looking.
- 43:26Yeah, it's Cordelia. It is incredibly Cordelia coded.
- 43:30I just I wanna like do videos like little shots of Cordelia
- 43:34now and make like an artsy. Yeah.
- 43:37The quasi horror movie of her. Yeah, you could do it.
- 43:41So like they got that to deal with, but they're also.
- 43:44They have a space Viking funeral.
- 43:46Yeah, they got to deal with Kane's body, so they just shoot
- 43:49him out into space. Yeah, like anybody want to say
- 43:50any words? Nobody says anything.
- 43:53This man's last hours were being.
- 43:56Horrifying. Smothered by an alien, argued
- 44:00over by his crewmates if they were going to quarantine him or
- 44:03not, and then shot out without ceremony.
- 44:07What a rough way to go. Now they're like, we got to find
- 44:09this thing, it's on a ship somewhere.
- 44:12It's fucking freaky. So they split into two teams to
- 44:15go catch it. They have a little prod.
- 44:18They figure that the alien is going to want to defend itself
- 44:21because it's got so many defense mechanisms.
- 44:22So they're like, this should be effective enough that we can,
- 44:25you know, scooch it. Ash made a tracking device that
- 44:28detects micro changes in the air density.
- 44:31So they want to get it into an airlock and basically release it
- 44:33into space. That's their plan.
- 44:36Ripley, Parker and Brett get close to it.
- 44:39They are getting a feed on the tracker that it's in the locker
- 44:46and we have this whole build up. It's fucking Jonesy in the
- 44:51locker. Jonesy jump skater.
- 44:54I love it. Sweet little dummy.
- 44:57And he runs off, which because like they've got the net ready.
- 45:00Like their plan was they were going to catch the thing in the
- 45:02net and then get it towards the airlock.
- 45:05And instead Brett steps back in room.
- 45:07He's like, don't let Jonesy get away.
- 45:09And because he let Jonesy get away, he's the one that's got to
- 45:12be responsible for going and finding him.
- 45:14Yeah, so he's off on his own. He goes into a room where he
- 45:17thinks he is, but he finds some shed skin there.
- 45:21Yeah. So that tells us that the face
- 45:23hugger is not the first form that it comes out as, because
- 45:27clearly this thing went from the little baby that came out,
- 45:30turned into a face hugger and molted that skin.
- 45:32Yeah. So he continues his search and
- 45:38we've hear Jonesy hissing and he's hissing at the scene of
- 45:43Morph, which is fucking huge. It's it's just hanging down from
- 45:47behind Brett. Now.
- 45:48Brett doesn't realize that that's what the cat's hissing
- 45:50at. And he turns around and he looks
- 45:53up and that's a big motherfucker right there.
- 45:55And it grabs him and takes him away.
- 45:57So the rest are like, he could be alive.
- 46:00And I'm like, no, he couldn't. But then again, I've seen this
- 46:03movie a million times, so. Yeah.
- 46:06So they're like, all right, let's drive the Xenomorph into
- 46:09an airlock. It's already in the airlock and
- 46:12the airlock the the OR no, it's, it's in the vent, which they're
- 46:16like, OK, so the vent only has like another exit, which is the
- 46:19airlock. So let's go ahead and close off
- 46:21the entrance and we'll just kind of like push it that direction
- 46:26and then we'll ship it off into space.
- 46:28And this is where Ash refers to it as Kane's son.
- 46:30Kane's son. That's so fucking weird.
- 46:33In Dallas, he's trying to make sure that this plan seems
- 46:37reliable and mother has insufficient data to evaluate
- 46:40the plan. Yeah, All of a sudden, this
- 46:42computer's like, I don't know, can't compute.
- 46:44And I wonder if that's tied into like Order 937 or whatever the
- 46:48fuck it is. It was definitely intended.
- 46:50Like it was like it could have answered any of these questions,
- 46:52it just chose not to. So Dallas goes into the air
- 46:56shaft with the flamethrower, the lock is open, and everybody else
- 47:00is in position. Lambert tracks the Xenomorph
- 47:04into the third junction. Dallas goes in, but then the
- 47:07signal's lost. And this is so tense, like
- 47:10because how did the signal get lost?
- 47:12They don't know where it went. And then all of a sudden it
- 47:14reappears and it's so fucking close to Dallas.
- 47:17Yeah. And Lambert's like, you got to
- 47:19get out of there, you got to go. So he like, climbs down to the
- 47:22third level and turns around and yeah, it's right there.
- 47:26His signal's cut off, and all they find in that area is the
- 47:30headset and no blood, no sign of Dallas sucks.
- 47:37So Ripley says that they're going to carry on Dallas's plan.
- 47:39Lambert doesn't like that, and she's like, well, the shuttle
- 47:41won't hold for people, so we got to do something.
- 47:44Yeah. Ripley asks Mother what this
- 47:48order is about it and she it's the science officer special
- 47:52order. It's not for Captain's vision
- 47:54and she goes override that shit and finds out that the science
- 47:59officer had a special order to land and collect this Organism.
- 48:02The crew was considered expendable.
- 48:04This is the number one priority was to bring it back to Earth.
- 48:09So Ash realizes that she has found this out and he closes the
- 48:13door and they're fighting. They're going at it.
- 48:17And guess what? He is a really intense fighter.
- 48:20He's a weird fighter. He rolls up a magazine and tries
- 48:25to shove it down her throat. Like what the fuck is that?
- 48:28It's. Really effective.
- 48:29She's having a hard time breathing.
- 48:30You know what have been more effective?
- 48:31Snapping her neck. He's a fucking robot.
- 48:34He's got the strength to do it. Clearly he's super strong.
- 48:38Parker comes in and intercepts before anything can happen,
- 48:41though, and he knocks Ash's head off.
- 48:45And there's not blood. And they're like, holy shit, Ash
- 48:49is a robot. And so they figure out that the
- 48:53company sent them basically, they, you know, they got their
- 48:57mineral war, but they're also collecting this alien for the
- 49:00weapons division. So they talked to Ash's
- 49:03disassembled body. They asked how to kill.
- 49:05He's like, you can't kill. It's a perfect Organism.
- 49:08That's why the company wants it so badly.
- 49:11He was like, I find it fascinating.
- 49:12I find it admirable in its purity.
- 49:16You know that opening quote that I read and he was like, And
- 49:19while I don't think you can kill it, you all do have my sympathy.
- 49:23No, no, it's a little bit extra because before he was, Ripley
- 49:26was trying to get like, OK, like what's our chances with this
- 49:29thing? And they're like, I we can't
- 49:30compute that. But like he's like, oh, and
- 49:32Ripley before I go because they were about to determine.
- 49:34I was like, I can't say for sure, but like regarding your
- 49:39question about like your all's chances, I won't say for sure,
- 49:42but you have my sympathies, I guess.
- 49:44An extra little fuck year before he knows he's about to get
- 49:47turned off. Dramatic fucking robot I have
- 49:49ever seen on the screen. Yeah, yeah, like.
- 49:51Well, besides C3PO. Yeah, that guy.
- 49:54'S a fucking drama queen. Yeah.
- 49:58So the plan? Blow up the ship, take their
- 50:02chances in the shuttle. Fuck it if it can only fit.
- 50:05Well, there's only three of them now.
- 50:06They're not bringing Nash's robot body with them.
- 50:08No. No, they don't need that.
- 50:11So they'll have 10 minutes. Once they pull the trigger,
- 50:13Parker and Lambert are gonna go get as much coolant as they can
- 50:16carry while Ripley preps the shuttle.
- 50:19And while she's doing that, she hears Jonesy.
- 50:21Jonesy. Jonesy.
- 50:22Yay, he and he really does scare her and she gets this carrier.
- 50:26You know what? Our cat should be grateful we
- 50:28got them these like fancy bougie lined and stuffed carriers so
- 50:34they can be nice and comfortable.
- 50:35They're ventilated. Even put their little initials
- 50:37on them. Yeah, I monogrammed them.
- 50:40Like they're so extra. And Jiangxi gets put into
- 50:44basically a large Tupperware. Like our cats don't know how
- 50:48good they have it. No, they're spoiled.
- 50:51So yeah, so she gets Jonesy into the Cat carrier.
- 50:55The Xenomorph is right in front of the Lambert, and this is a
- 50:59good example of flight fright Fight or freeze 'cause she
- 51:03freeze. Yeah, well, they've updated it
- 51:06to fight or flight or freeze. Oh, really?
- 51:07Yeah, there's developments. Yeah, yeah, that's been around
- 51:12for a while, all right. Should have learned about it in
- 51:15college. I just filled out with your
- 51:16psychology degree. Fuck that.
- 51:20But yeah, so she's frozen and Parker's like move and she's not
- 51:24moving. So basically the Xenomorph gets
- 51:26both of them. Yeah, 'cause he's trying to
- 51:28flamethrower and she won't get out of the way.
- 51:31Just get them both at that point, man.
- 51:33Like, I'm sorry, but like if she's choosing the, I mean,
- 51:35she's not necessarily choosing it, but you got she.
- 51:37Might move if she starts to get singed.
- 51:39Yeah, maybe a little bit. So Ripley, you know, she's like,
- 51:42well, guess we're just doing this then.
- 51:44So she pulls the switch to self destruct.
- 51:46She's got t -, 10 minutes, 5 minutes until not no longer be
- 51:51overridden. And that is going to be very
- 51:54important because like it mentions that and I was like,
- 51:56that's going to be, that's going to be a thing.
- 51:58Yeah, so she starts to make her way through, but she spots the
- 52:01Xenomorph and she backs away. It's basically blocking her from
- 52:04getting to the shuttle. Yeah, so she runs to go override
- 52:07the self destruct and she gets it just under the 5 minutes.
- 52:11That's frustrating. Yeah, it's then she's like
- 52:15trying to tell mother and mother's just like no, it's it
- 52:18was it took me a longer 5 minutes to override.
- 52:20Sucks to suck so she. She grabs A flamethrower and
- 52:24she's going to go get Jonesy. So she gets Jonesy and she makes
- 52:29her way to the pod and she like gets there with one minute to go
- 52:34and she makes the escape just in time before the in the.
- 52:38Strong mode ship explodes. She's a huge fucking explosion.
- 52:43That's like a galactic explosion.
- 52:44You know, we joke around about people being way too close to
- 52:47explosions. She was way too close to the
- 52:49explosion in space. Yeah, I just, I can't believe
- 52:52that thing exploded that hard. Like why?
- 52:54Why was it the like maybe it was the minerals that they were
- 52:56transporting like. I think it's also has something
- 52:59to do with, you know, the way space is like it doesn't have an
- 53:02atmosphere like Earth's. You know it's not going to
- 53:04travel the same way. Yeah, I guess it could be.
- 53:06Yeah. Well, anyway, she's relieved
- 53:09it's over with. She gets Jonesy out.
- 53:10And Jonesy, because he's able to wander around the ship now.
- 53:12Well, no. She's put them into the crowd
- 53:14chamber. Oh, that's right, they're.
- 53:15Going to go sleep, they're going to go night, night together.
- 53:18She's prepping herself when she like up against the wall,
- 53:21there's like all of this machinery and it's all like
- 53:24black and hard shelled and everything.
- 53:26And she's nearby pushing some buttons and oh hey, some of this
- 53:31machinery isn't machinery. Doesn't react to that.
- 53:38So she puts on a suit, quietly buckles herself into seat John
- 53:43Z, still in the cryopod. So he's good.
- 53:46And she opens up the door to the pod, opens it up, and does
- 53:53anymore of his whole 9. Because, again, tough little son
- 53:56of a bitch. And she prods it, you know, like
- 54:00they had planned. Yeah, yeah.
- 54:02Shoots it. And then once it's out, she
- 54:04closes the thing, uses the propellers because it's trying
- 54:07to hang on to the side and dislodges it from that.
- 54:11And she records a report she's the last remaining crew member
- 54:15of the Nostromo. Yeah, six weeks to arrive, and
- 54:19then she puts herself to cryo sleep and that's the movie's
- 54:23ending. Oh my God, I have chills.
- 54:26Yeah, talking about it. It's a really good.
- 54:28It's so scary. It's so scary.
- 54:30It's still a 10 out of 10. Like you.
- 54:34You can't get much better than this movie.
- 54:36No, no, it's a perfect. Well, it's not a perfect movie,
- 54:38but it's like like a fucking great movie.
- 54:41It is an amazing movie, so no changes what is how you rate it.
- 54:47Oh man, she was messing with the cats at the beginning.
- 54:50It was close to dinner time. And Talia like at one point
- 54:53jumped down from the couch. And usually when she does that,
- 54:55it's close, it's dinner time, so it's time to fed, get fed.
- 54:59And the cats ran to the kitchen and Talia turned around and
- 55:00jumped back over on the couch and she was fucking with them.
- 55:03Hardcore it was. Really funny.
- 55:04She liked the playful nature of the Xenomor.
- 55:06She's like, I can do that. Yeah, she then she sat on the
- 55:09couch and she, she washed it with us until it seems like
- 55:12maybe they're going to be she's with Jonesy and then she threw a
- 55:15tantrum cuz she's got cat sisters.
- 55:17She cared about them. So I think Talia also gives us a
- 55:2110. She likes it a lot.
- 55:24Zoe, who was her ultimate warrior.
- 55:27Jonesy, of course, you gotta choose a cat in this situation.
- 55:31Gotta be. Yeah, This is a hoot for
- 55:34Cordelia. Because Cordelia.
- 55:36She saw herself in that movie, yeah.
- 55:38She said that's me. Wait, or is it a holler?
- 55:40Holler's the good one. Holler's bad.
- 55:42That's in the holler. It's a hoot because it's a hoot.
- 55:44OK, Yeah, yeah, no, she, she sat next to me and just like watched
- 55:49the whole movie. She was like.
- 55:51She watches things, man. She really gets like she gets
- 55:53caught up in movies. Yeah, she like, she will just
- 55:56pop herself between us or like next to one of us and then
- 55:59cushion on the other side. She likes to be like enveloped
- 56:02when she's watching stuff. Maybe going over her head, maybe
- 56:05too advanced for her. A little kind of kid.
- 56:06She's a baby, yeah, But she's soaking it in.
- 56:09Yeah. Yeah.
- 56:13Who did you relate to? Let's see, I think I related to
- 56:18the fucking guy like Parker and then for like being concerned
- 56:23about the like the money, like I'm doing this.
- 56:25I'm I'm getting paid for this shit.
- 56:27I'm putting just as much on the line as them.
- 56:31OK, I think I probably related to Ripley because I'm a rule
- 56:34follower. You are.
- 56:35And I would also make it a priority to get the cat.
- 56:39Yeah, I. Get it?
- 56:40It wouldn't like I would be like, no, get the fucking cat.
- 56:42Get the cat, Yeah. Yep, if anybody's making it
- 56:45back, it's the cat you guys are. Yeah.
- 56:47Like extra all right. What would Dom do?
- 56:54Man Dom against Xenomorph. Dude, Can you imagine him just
- 57:00like flying the spaceship super fast?
- 57:02Yeah, like that's not going to get him out of this jam.
- 57:05He would have fixed, he would have fixed the ship so much
- 57:08faster than Parker and Brett. Yeah, he would have.
- 57:11Yeah. I mean, he fucking knows this
- 57:12shit. He would have also ordered
- 57:14Ripley to fuck quarantine. He wouldn't have accepted the
- 57:18quarantine. So I think, you know, they
- 57:20figure out something bad is going on.
- 57:22But he he's fast, he goes fast. He found a way to make a tiny
- 57:27car that fits in the spaceship, so he's able to just track down
- 57:30the Xenomorph. You know what I think happens
- 57:32here, because this is how a lot of Fast and Furious movies go,
- 57:35because it's basically an anime at this point.
- 57:38It's a shonen. Yeah, Dom would see that the
- 57:44Xenomorph is Kane's son. That's family.
- 57:47That's family. You can't fuck with family.
- 57:49You. Can't turn your back on family?
- 57:50He accepts the Xenomorph, molds the Xenomorph into a fine young
- 57:55fellow and the Xenomorph. It ends with them having a BBQ
- 57:59back on Earth. You know what?
- 58:01You're right. That's what I mean.
- 58:02That's how that would go. Because I mean, enemy becomes
- 58:04friend. Yeah, he may have killed Kane,
- 58:07but you know what? Unfortunately, that's just the
- 58:10break sometimes. Sometimes.
- 58:11And nobody's really done in a Fast and Furious movie, except
- 58:14for Jesse. Yeah, that guy died.
- 58:20OK, so we don't do dream sequel for our franchise movies, but we
- 58:24are going to have a segment that I want to call What's the Story
- 58:28Mother? Because as I said, my mom, this
- 58:32is one of her favorite franchises and she was so
- 58:34excited when she learned that we were doing this.
- 58:37And she says she has thoughts on all of them.
- 58:39So it's like, what's your thought on this one?
- 58:40And she said, I'm completely blocked.
- 58:43It's one of my best, one of the best movies ever in any genre.
- 58:46That's it. Short and sweet.
- 58:48She was just so excited. She couldn't even get all of her
- 58:51words out. So it's just a perfect movie to
- 58:54her. I mean, yeah, it's one of the
- 58:56best movies. It's so good at being horror
- 58:58sci-fi like. It's just it's so strong all the
- 59:02way around, yeah. Man, they they did it with this
- 59:06one for sure. You really did.
- 59:07Really. Ridley Scott has this movie, I
- 59:09think for his career, yeah, he's put out some movies that people
- 59:12don't really care for. But he did Alien, Yeah.
- 59:16You know, So you can't, you can't argue that.
- 59:18Part of my problem with Ridley Scott is The Office, because
- 59:22Michael Scott's production company that he made for
- 59:24himself, Chris Scott. Yeah, yeah.
- 59:27All right. There's one thing we haven't
- 59:29done yet. We did not do a tackling.
- 59:31You got to do a tackling. In space, no one can hear you
- 59:36meow. Curiosity saved the cat.
- 59:46I liked that. Oh yeah, curiosity saved the
- 59:50cat. I like it.
- 59:51OK, All right, so now we got reviews.
- 59:56OK, so unfortunately we didn't get listener reviews for this
- 59:59one because we I've still been working on the announcement
- 1:00:03thing at this point. So, you know, I'm sorry.
- 1:00:07You all can jump in on the other movies whenever we get to them.
- 1:00:11So for this I had to pull a negative again, went to Reddit
- 1:00:16for this also, and this is somebody from three years ago
- 1:00:19said Alien was a disappointment. So this is what they have to
- 1:00:23say. So after years of postponing, I
- 1:00:26finally sat down and watched Ridley Scott's Alien.
- 1:00:29Now let me preface this by saying I'm not a old movie
- 1:00:32equals bad movie type of guy. Rear Window, Dracula 31, not the
- 1:00:3631st, 1:00, but 1931, The Godfather, and It's a mad mad
- 1:00:41mad Mad world are all in my top ten favorite films of all time.
- 1:00:45Furthermore, I like me a slow burn flick, something that takes
- 1:00:47its time, and while Alien has tremendous practical effects and
- 1:00:52the outshine much of what's being done in Hollywood today, I
- 1:00:55found the movie utterly boring. What most people seem to view as
- 1:00:59building atmosphere and tension I found sleep inducing.
- 1:01:02What was supposed to be tense was annoying, annoyingly slow,
- 1:01:06and what was supposed to be thrilling and hearth pounding.
- 1:01:09Hearth heart pounding had me yawning.
- 1:01:12I'm not trying to be mean, I suppose I simply don't get the
- 1:01:14hype after finally seeing this apparent masterpiece.
- 1:01:17He introduces far too many iconic movie staples to count.
- 1:01:20I'm not taking that away from him, but purely as an atmosphere
- 1:01:24LED horror movie I found out unremarkable.
- 1:01:27It also weirdly enough has some pretty baffling sound editing.
- 1:01:31Am I alone in feeling this way? What do you guys think of Alien?
- 1:01:34There was somebody like the first comment below was somebody
- 1:01:37agreeing. I didn't necessarily read that
- 1:01:39one, but apparently some people just don't really care for it.
- 1:01:41Find it, you know, not tense, but boring.
- 1:01:44I mean, I guess that's fair. I think the concept of space has
- 1:01:47always freaked me out a lot. Me too.
- 1:01:49Yeah. Well, not only that, but like, I
- 1:01:51like the like, where the fuck is this thing?
- 1:01:54And like, you don't know where it's at.
- 1:01:56And it's just kind of like hiding and it's tense and
- 1:01:58they're all looking for it. And, you know, like, those are
- 1:02:01things that I like about like, you know, Michael Myers, when
- 1:02:04he's like stalking, you know, it's just like, where is he?
- 1:02:06Where's he going to get him from this time?
- 1:02:08Like, you know, he's there. You know, he's watching.
- 1:02:10It's just like the looming threat.
- 1:02:12Just kind of like just knowing that that thing is there and it
- 1:02:16could pounce at any time is like, it gets me stressed out.
- 1:02:21Yeah, it works for me like that. That's a good formula for me
- 1:02:24with horror movies. Yeah, I think there's different
- 1:02:26things that trigger people's, like spooky sensor, so to speak.
- 1:02:31And, you know, for some people, like lizard brain tells you,
- 1:02:34like, threat is looming, be aware, you know, but that's not
- 1:02:38going to be necessarily the same for everybody.
- 1:02:41Yeah, some people are like, threat is looming, bring that
- 1:02:43shit on. Yeah, like some people are like,
- 1:02:45I want boom, boom, boom, go, go, go.
- 1:02:46That's scarier. No chance to breathe.
- 1:02:49Lizard brain wants rest. Yeah.
- 1:02:51So, you know, I mean, I definitely disagree, but I can
- 1:02:57see their perspective on it. Yeah, I can get it too, you
- 1:02:59know, like different strokes. And you know, it's not going to
- 1:03:02be for everybody, but it's for most people in this movie is
- 1:03:06just based off of what I've seen from everything else, you know?
- 1:03:10But you know, don't feel bad if you don't like it.
- 1:03:12Totally understand. All right, so that's going to do
- 1:03:16it for our first one of the Alien franchise.
- 1:03:19Yeah, it was a good time. I'm looking forward to doing
- 1:03:21Aliens. We're going to go James Cameron.
- 1:03:23More actiony, still a little horary, but you know, it'll be
- 1:03:26fun. I'm looking forward to it.
- 1:03:29But in the meantime, we want to shout out our patrons on the
