Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Well, my name is Adam.
- 0:01Speaker 2: I'm Adam is Shilling, born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee
- 0:05Speaker 2: in the United States, seeing for a band called Orthodox
- 0:09Speaker 2: and coming over for our second time in a year
- 0:11Speaker 2: to Australia with Wage War.
- 0:14Speaker 3: And fantastic mate. Thanks for joining us today, Yeah, so
- 0:19Speaker 3: you say, very Orthodox hit Australia later this month as
- 0:21Speaker 3: part of Wage War it calls Me by Nagel, which
- 0:25Speaker 3: kicks off in Perth on July the thirtieth, before hitting Adelaide,
- 0:29Speaker 3: Melbourne and Brisbane and finishing in Sydney on August at seventh.
- 0:31Speaker 3: But not too long now, may do you packed it
- 0:34Speaker 3: ready to gain?
- 0:36Speaker 2: I just got back from a different tour two days ago,
- 0:38Speaker 2: so I actually just unpacked.
- 0:39Speaker 1: But I'll we go in the back soon.
- 0:44Speaker 3: No. Look, you were here last year with Straight from
- 0:47Speaker 3: the Path and you know only August Mate. So like
- 0:49Speaker 3: you say, it's twice in the space of the years.
- 0:51Speaker 3: So what's changed through the vans this last time You're Odia.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Not a whole ton has changed necessarily.
- 0:59Speaker 2: I think what it's been cool is that we got
- 1:01Speaker 2: out there about two months on the dot from our
- 1:04Speaker 2: last album releasing, and I think that that album has
- 1:09Speaker 2: done well enough for us and continue to grow itself
- 1:13Speaker 2: over the last year to where I'm actually excited. I'm
- 1:15Speaker 2: really excited to come back to these places a because
- 1:18Speaker 2: our first time many.
- 1:19Speaker 1: Of these cities was already as if we'd been there before.
- 1:21Speaker 2: But now being there and people have a experienced it,
- 1:24Speaker 2: we probably got did a decent job at getting people
- 1:27Speaker 2: to go and you know, actually listening to the music.
- 1:29Speaker 1: Before or I guess after we were there.
- 1:32Speaker 2: But I think now that the album has had time
- 1:34Speaker 2: to settle in and become familiar, I'm actually really excited
- 1:37Speaker 2: to get back and see what the reaction, how the
- 1:38Speaker 2: reactions differ from the first time.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So yeah, yes, at being invited, I over by wage
- 1:43Speaker 3: War as the main headline is nice. So what's your
- 1:45Speaker 3: relationship there with you guys?
- 1:47Speaker 2: We just did six weeks with them actually in the States,
- 1:51Speaker 2: ironically or coincidentally, I get confused on which one it is.
- 1:54Speaker 2: But when we were in Australia last year is when
- 1:57Speaker 2: we got the offer to do this spring tour that
- 1:59Speaker 2: we just did with them, and we did, you know,
- 2:03Speaker 2: mid April through the start of June with them for
- 2:06Speaker 2: the first leg of this world to where they're doing for
- 2:07Speaker 2: it calls me by name, but they're.
- 2:10Speaker 1: In terms of relationship. I mean they were.
- 2:14Speaker 2: It's been our first step into doing tours with bands
- 2:17Speaker 2: that have buses and playing these huge rooms, these beautiful theaters.
- 2:20Speaker 2: We've never done anything. We played shows in those formats,
- 2:23Speaker 2: but never done it consistently. And you know, you hear
- 2:27Speaker 2: all the time about the egos of different bands and like,
- 2:30Speaker 2: you know, you're not allowed to use this part of
- 2:31Speaker 2: the production, you can't do this, don't come in our
- 2:33Speaker 2: green room whatever. Wage War was literally like day one,
- 2:37Speaker 2: We're like, hey, come kick it, like do whatever you want.
- 2:41Speaker 2: You know, our place is your place whatever. They're like
- 2:44Speaker 2: apologetic about the say stage space because they had a
- 2:47Speaker 2: big production like drum Rise.
- 2:48Speaker 1: When they're like hey, like sorry, they're like, you don't.
- 2:51Speaker 2: Really have much room tonight. I'm like, bro, I'm good,
- 2:53Speaker 2: thank you for saying. But like it, I get to
- 2:56Speaker 2: play to like a thousand people in this gorgeous opuse.
- 3:00Speaker 1: I'm not complaining. And they're just.
- 3:03Speaker 2: Incredibly kind, incredibly accommodating, and you can tell that they're
- 3:06Speaker 2: like actually fans of the bands that they bring out
- 3:10Speaker 2: every night. At some point I look over I see
- 3:12Speaker 2: a member of the band somewhere watching, even if it's
- 3:14Speaker 2: just a song.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Yeah, they're just really genuinely great people.
- 3:19Speaker 2: And what was funny is we were making the joke
- 3:23Speaker 2: about like, man, I hope we get along with wager workers.
- 3:25Speaker 2: Imagine that, you know, we both think that one another sucks.
- 3:28Speaker 2: And then we got to go to Australia.
- 3:29Speaker 3: Together places the very people out of him maybe you
- 3:32Speaker 3: would have been fine. Yeah, and you guys are well,
- 3:38Speaker 3: and I end up you've built a reputation for your fervent,
- 3:42Speaker 3: visceral live shows. Mate, So how do you mentally prepare
- 3:45Speaker 3: to bring that level of raw aggression to the stage
- 3:48Speaker 3: night after night on the other side of the world.
- 3:53Speaker 2: I wish I had a more interesting answer, but I've
- 3:57Speaker 2: just Okay. This was something I was talking about the
- 3:59Speaker 2: other day. We were talking about how a lot of
- 4:03Speaker 2: bands now, because the crowds themselves are getting so interactive,
- 4:11Speaker 2: a lot of bands are so cool and nonchalant on stage,
- 4:17Speaker 2: and I just I just that was never even kind
- 4:21Speaker 2: of a goal of mine. Even if I could just
- 4:23Speaker 2: stand there and hand the mic out the whole time,
- 4:26Speaker 2: There's just no way.
- 4:27Speaker 1: That just was never something that was ever a part
- 4:29Speaker 1: of my goal.
- 4:32Speaker 2: It was just the bands I came up wanting to
- 4:34Speaker 2: that I idolized, was like slip Knot, who you know,
- 4:37Speaker 2: threw up in their masks and fought each other. Or
- 4:41Speaker 2: from there you've got you know, trash talk from California,
- 4:44Speaker 2: where the singer can't be bothered to even be on
- 4:47Speaker 2: the stage the whole time he has to be climbing
- 4:49Speaker 2: on top of people in the middle of the pit, whatever.
- 4:52Speaker 2: And so I guess I just always saw this genre
- 4:55Speaker 2: as like, this is chaos. We are delivering something for
- 4:59Speaker 2: you to react chaotically.
- 5:02Speaker 1: Chaotically is that a word?
- 5:03Speaker 3: It is?
- 5:04Speaker 2: Now we're creating chaos together, and I just I never
- 5:13Speaker 2: I just can't imagine playing the songs that we play
- 5:16Speaker 2: and not try to match that intensity. So it's not
- 5:20Speaker 2: even like anything I'm prepared for. It's just I don't
- 5:24Speaker 2: know a single way to do it Otherwise. We just
- 5:26Speaker 2: did a week of shows up to Hellfest, and I
- 5:29Speaker 2: have two ribs in my back that.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Sees from picking something too heavy up at work, and.
- 5:36Speaker 2: That didn't stop me from doing what I usually do
- 5:38Speaker 2: because I'm just like, oh, this is the part where.
- 5:40Speaker 1: I do this thing, and I'm not going to not
- 5:42Speaker 1: do it. I'm performing. That's what this is.
- 5:44Speaker 2: And so I just in terms of what do I
- 5:48Speaker 2: do to prepare, I just go play the show.
- 5:51Speaker 1: That's just the only thing that I know how to
- 5:52Speaker 1: do is I play the show.
- 5:53Speaker 2: And in terms of how do you prepare on the
- 5:56Speaker 2: other side of the world, our set time over there
- 5:59Speaker 2: is going to be like five am our time, so
- 6:02Speaker 2: I am going to be doing a couple more jumping
- 6:03Speaker 2: Jackson usual to get my blood running.
- 6:05Speaker 1: But it's not like it's just kind of at this.
- 6:08Speaker 2: Point, it's a little bit of a switch where we're
- 6:11Speaker 2: all smiles and bullshitting and joking in the back, and
- 6:14Speaker 2: then the moment the first note hits, it's just a
- 6:18Speaker 2: here we go.
- 6:19Speaker 3: So yeah, very nice. Nice. You mentioned in the past
- 6:23Speaker 3: that winning out of grow crowd is everything to get made.
- 6:25Speaker 3: So since your returning to a try out on a
- 6:27Speaker 3: massive platform supporting Wage War, what's your game plan for
- 6:31Speaker 3: maybe winning over the rooms that might be a bit
- 6:32Speaker 3: new to orthodoxy star around.
- 6:35Speaker 2: So that was something that was really cool with this
- 6:37Speaker 2: tour that we just did with Wage Wars. Like I said,
- 6:39Speaker 2: it was our first time with this demographic and so on.
- 6:42Speaker 2: Especially that tour package was us a band called Never
- 6:45Speaker 2: Tell in Wage War and Never tells very much the
- 6:49Speaker 2: verse chorus, verse format whatever. And we are very aware
- 6:52Speaker 2: that we are not the ballad band, we're not the
- 6:55Speaker 2: catchy chorus band, and so we just we know what
- 6:59Speaker 2: we do well, and what we do well is that
- 7:01Speaker 2: exact like intense visceral energy, and so we kind of
- 7:05Speaker 2: are just leaning into it because I'm like, if we
- 7:07Speaker 2: draw that back, if you don't like it to begin with,
- 7:09Speaker 2: if we draw that back, you're not gonna like it more.
- 7:13Speaker 2: So I'm just gonna give all of it that we
- 7:15Speaker 2: can to you. And if we don't like it, if
- 7:17Speaker 2: you don't like it, don't buy it to get to
- 7:18Speaker 2: the next show, somebody else will. And that's kind of
- 7:21Speaker 2: how we're approaching it.
- 7:23Speaker 3: It's any way tender, right, And so how do you
- 7:26Speaker 3: feel the aggressive, nisier and the atmosphere of your music
- 7:29Speaker 3: translates to the Australian hard core scene.
- 7:33Speaker 1: So this is my one.
- 7:36Speaker 2: This is such a funny thing to gripe about. This
- 7:39Speaker 2: is our second tour now in Australia and the rooms
- 7:44Speaker 2: are even bigger, and my one gripe is we haven't
- 7:48Speaker 2: gotten to play a true Australia Hardcore show. Everything we've
- 7:53Speaker 2: done is these huge, you know, bigger rooms, barricades packed
- 7:59Speaker 2: to the gills for this headliner. That neither of them
- 8:03Speaker 2: And this isn't disparaging, but like Wage War and Serve
- 8:05Speaker 2: for the.
- 8:05Speaker 1: Path are not hardcore bands.
- 8:07Speaker 2: Serve the Path may have started that, but towards the
- 8:09Speaker 2: end they were this alternative metal cored thing. And so
- 8:14Speaker 2: I my gripe is that I really want to I
- 8:18Speaker 2: want to get back over there at some point and
- 8:21Speaker 2: play the like dirty, scary, small stage rooms.
- 8:27Speaker 1: I want to get back and.
- 8:28Speaker 2: Play the things that we started out playing here because
- 8:32Speaker 2: I think that if we go over there and we
- 8:35Speaker 2: continue this, you know, only playing these big tours, which
- 8:40Speaker 2: is is a blessing, don't don't get it twisted, then
- 8:44Speaker 2: I don't think.
- 8:44Speaker 1: We get to really deliver the roots of what we are.
- 8:49Speaker 3: You don't get a personal touch because you know.
- 8:51Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, we can call for a bunch of different interactions,
- 8:55Speaker 2: but like there's something to be said of like you're
- 9:00Speaker 2: we're playing a stage where like if I want to,
- 9:01Speaker 2: I can pull you up to me, and like that
- 9:05Speaker 2: is something that you can't you can't really.
- 9:10Speaker 1: What's the word I'm looking for emulate on a launch
- 9:15Speaker 1: and so that's that's the one thing that I to
- 9:18Speaker 1: answer you.
- 9:18Speaker 2: I can't really answer your question truthfully because I haven't
- 9:20Speaker 2: got to truly experience the Australia hardcore scene yet as
- 9:25Speaker 2: it's intended to be.
- 9:27Speaker 3: So now, just say someone is coming along to see
- 9:30Speaker 3: Why Age War and they don't know too much about Orthodox,
- 9:32Speaker 3: So what three songs to you should they listen to
- 9:34Speaker 3: in order to get to know the band to be better?
- 9:38Speaker 2: Sacred Place one. If I describe myself to people, I
- 9:43Speaker 2: say that we're an alarm clock metal band. It's just
- 9:45Speaker 2: it's a bunch of weird sirens over heavy breakdowns.
- 9:49Speaker 1: So sacred Place for sure. I would say step Inside.
- 9:58Speaker 2: From the last record Becau because I think that song
- 10:02Speaker 2: encapsulates everything that that record does. And then probably head
- 10:12Speaker 2: on a spike because it it shows a lot of
- 10:16Speaker 2: our new metal and our hardcore influence all at once.
- 10:20Speaker 3: Yeah right, Speaking of your last album Brag, you released
- 10:23Speaker 3: that last year then it was called a d all
- 10:26Speaker 3: left open say, how was the reception? Metal? Did fans
- 10:29Speaker 3: gravitate here the way you hope they would?
- 10:32Speaker 2: It far surpassed expectations and like We've we tour enough
- 10:38Speaker 2: to know that when we release new music it's going
- 10:40Speaker 2: to do well, simply because we're not a band that tours.
- 10:44Speaker 1: A little bit, waits, puts on music, and then tours
- 10:46Speaker 1: a little bit.
- 10:47Speaker 2: We're always on the road, we're always growing it, we're
- 10:50Speaker 2: always reaching to new people. We're always trying to find
- 10:53Speaker 2: ways to do things, like Toward the Wage War, which
- 10:56Speaker 2: is a band that if you'd ask me before they
- 10:59Speaker 2: send us an all form like, yeah, we probably will
- 11:01Speaker 2: never tour with that band because categorically speaking, we don't
- 11:05Speaker 2: align on paper as well as we do in person,
- 11:12Speaker 2: but which we are always looking for ways.
- 11:13Speaker 1: To grow ourselves. So we knew it was going to.
- 11:18Speaker 2: Do well because the last tric it did well and
- 11:20Speaker 2: this one is objectively better. And but I think we've
- 11:26Speaker 2: kind of been fed humble Pie so many times that
- 11:28Speaker 2: we don't let our expectations get too high, and that
- 11:32Speaker 2: like we just we got, like I said, just blown
- 11:37Speaker 2: out of the water truly, from like the first show
- 11:40Speaker 2: up until you know, playing Hellfest a couple of days ago.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Like the reaction to these new songs are set is
- 11:47Speaker 2: predominantly new material, and nobody even complains that there's in't
- 11:52Speaker 2: the Old Ship, so it's it's a It's a really
- 11:54Speaker 2: cool change in the trajectory.
- 11:58Speaker 3: Yeah, were there any off that album that maybe went
- 12:02Speaker 3: down better live than you thought they would or maybe
- 12:04Speaker 3: weren't as quite as good as you thought they would be.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I do think I do think people should lose their
- 12:11Speaker 1: mind more.
- 12:12Speaker 2: When we played the song Dredweight. I think that song
- 12:14Speaker 2: is like a genuine just everything you could possibly do
- 12:20Speaker 2: to mash to something is in that song. There's just
- 12:24Speaker 2: so much opportunity, and I almost wonder if sometimes I
- 12:27Speaker 2: think maybe.
- 12:27Speaker 1: It's so heavy that people just don't know how to
- 12:29Speaker 1: react to it.
- 12:32Speaker 2: And then a song that I don't that I think
- 12:34Speaker 2: went over better than I anticipated would be.
- 12:40Speaker 1: Keep Your Blessings. It's so crazy in the beginning, it's so.
- 12:45Speaker 2: Car bomb nuts, just odd time signature stuff, and it's
- 12:50Speaker 2: got a chorus which we don't really do, and it's
- 12:57Speaker 2: it's not really like a Mashi song, but it's got
- 13:02Speaker 2: a couple of parts in it that do lend for
- 13:04Speaker 2: a reaction. And I think that those moments, ironically are
- 13:08Speaker 2: like some of the biggest moments of our sets now,
- 13:11Speaker 2: And I think it's maybe it's because the song itself
- 13:13Speaker 2: is a build the whole time to those moments, but
- 13:16Speaker 2: I didn't really know how it was going to go live,
- 13:18Speaker 2: and I look forward to it every night for specifically
- 13:22Speaker 2: like these two parts, so.
- 13:24Speaker 1: It's it's awesome.
- 13:25Speaker 3: No, do you remember the first time I've heard one
- 13:28Speaker 3: of your songs played on the radio, and what song
- 13:30Speaker 3: was it? And way way.
- 13:33Speaker 1: I have not heard my song on the radio.
- 13:34Speaker 3: No, I would have to say, if you can fix that, way,
- 13:36Speaker 3: you're ready. Yeah.
- 13:37Speaker 2: I mean I don't really listen to the radio, to
- 13:39Speaker 2: be fair, It's not really my preferred medium for music.
- 13:43Speaker 2: I think that radio naturally is not going to sound
- 13:47Speaker 2: as good because of all the things he's got to
- 13:48Speaker 2: do to get to you.
- 13:51Speaker 1: But I would say, in my world, one of the
- 13:55Speaker 1: coolest things.
- 13:58Speaker 2: To just equate that answer, I guess something that I
- 14:01Speaker 2: have experienced would be like when Revolver used us as
- 14:05Speaker 2: like the cover image for one of their playlists, which
- 14:08Speaker 2: is kind of like the street side of radio or
- 14:11Speaker 2: the streaming format of radio basically, and that was such
- 14:15Speaker 2: a cool, like I can't believe this is happening. Revolve
- 14:18Speaker 2: Revolver magazine just made us on the same playlist as
- 14:22Speaker 2: Ghost were the first song and the cover artist. It's
- 14:25Speaker 2: just that was a pretty pretty astounding thing.
- 14:28Speaker 3: And remember something on that right, do you notice the
- 14:31Speaker 3: impact it has on the band them doing something like that? Look,
- 14:33Speaker 3: could you feel it for the next month or say
- 14:35Speaker 3: a bit a bit of grand song.
- 14:39Speaker 2: I think we've been at a point where we're so
- 14:42Speaker 2: busy and have so many plans that one of the
- 14:46Speaker 2: things that we have to try to be more cognizant
- 14:50Speaker 2: of is being present for the victories we obtain, not
- 14:55Speaker 2: solely focused on the ones we haven't won yet. And
- 14:58Speaker 2: so in that we uh, it's a good thing because
- 15:03Speaker 2: it's kind of like Michael Jordan said, you know, if
- 15:06Speaker 2: I couldn't learn anything about basketball, it's time to stop playing.
- 15:08Speaker 2: It's like, if we don't have anything to achieve, then
- 15:10Speaker 2: why are we doing it?
- 15:12Speaker 1: But it's one of.
- 15:14Speaker 2: Those things were like, man, that's really cool. I'm glad
- 15:16Speaker 2: that finally happened. Now, how do I now, what do
- 15:19Speaker 2: you need for this carne for us to bring our
- 15:22Speaker 2: gear to Australia? Now? What do we need for this
- 15:24Speaker 2: merch order? Who do we need to send an offer
- 15:27Speaker 2: for for this? If there's always so much going on,
- 15:30Speaker 2: for so many different things that it's hard to let
- 15:32Speaker 2: something live beyond its moment, but in those moments it
- 15:35Speaker 2: does feel very cool.
- 15:37Speaker 3: Yeah, right, Adam, Well, thanks very much for you Si.
- 15:39Speaker 3: I'm brother orthodox Ihea from July the thirtieth with Wage
- 15:42Speaker 3: War and Heaven's Gate tour kicks off in pers So
- 15:45Speaker 3: I'm gonna head down to the Brisbane so much so
- 15:47Speaker 3: I'll see you in there.
- 15:49Speaker 1: All right, sounds good, Chris, appreciate your
