- 0:15Speaker 1: Good morning support lovers of folks. Then this is Kevin
- 0:22Speaker 1: Daley here standing in for Adidalks today. Had a little
- 0:28Speaker 1: text from Ady quite late last night. He's not feeling
- 0:32Speaker 1: too clever and do you know what? I was going
- 0:34Speaker 1: to have to day off as well. Still the show
- 0:40Speaker 1: must go on. We are a team. I'm just getting
- 0:50Speaker 1: over the flu. Well I hope I am anyway, but
- 0:52Speaker 1: it's nice to be in a studio, nice water studio
- 0:55Speaker 1: on a Saturday morning on your own, not spreading any Germans.
- 1:04Speaker 1: So today I'll definitely be making it up as we
- 1:06Speaker 1: go along because I've got those scripts on a Saturday,
- 1:11Speaker 1: I leave that up to Asia and then I just
- 1:13Speaker 1: chip in now and then, so stay with us anyway.
- 1:20Speaker 1: He owes me one night to get out and scrape
- 1:23Speaker 1: all the ice off the car while he's tapped up
- 1:27Speaker 1: in bed listening to me. Anyway, we're going to try
- 1:35Speaker 1: and check out all the local sporting fixtures. Don't travel
- 1:40Speaker 1: until you find out what's going on. But today it's
- 1:44Speaker 1: a special day. Actually it's the third round of the
- 1:47Speaker 1: FA Cup and we're going to talk about that and
- 1:50Speaker 1: talk about some of the old classy games that you
- 1:53Speaker 1: might remember. This is the best day of the FA.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Cup calendar in my opinion? Do you know what I love?
- 2:06Speaker 1: This is intro song If you didn't know who it is,
- 2:09Speaker 1: it's Booker T and the MG's time is tight. It's
- 2:13Speaker 1: a great tuned outstart, isn't it too? Saturday morning?
- 2:26Speaker 2: Okay?
- 2:26Speaker 1: So let's get the show on the road. From nineteen
- 2:30Speaker 1: ninety five? We got supergrass? All right, supergrass there nineteen
- 3:03Speaker 1: ninety five, all right, get you in the mood or
- 3:06Speaker 1: a Saturday morning. If you're still chucked up in bed,
- 3:09Speaker 1: stay there. It is bitter outside today. I got in
- 3:12Speaker 1: the car. Well what I do? I've got two keys
- 3:15Speaker 1: to the car, and I go out almost in mean pecharmers.
- 3:19Speaker 1: Start the car, lock it up and pull the heaty
- 3:22Speaker 1: one inside it, you know before lock it up, and
- 3:25Speaker 1: then go indoors and have a cup of tea and
- 3:28Speaker 1: when it's time come out, nice warm car. Is there
- 3:32Speaker 1: anyone we need a couple of bouncy songs on a Saturday,
- 3:34Speaker 1: don't we to kind of get you in the mood
- 3:37Speaker 1: before you go out. You've got to go out and
- 3:38Speaker 1: do some shopping sometime, you know. Okay, So today third
- 3:42Speaker 1: round of the FA Cup a classic date in the
- 3:46Speaker 1: calendar the day.
- 3:49Speaker 2: If you like Neutrals, look forward to there too.
- 3:51Speaker 1: You might not be playing, but we're always looking out
- 3:54Speaker 1: for the giants versus the minnows. So I'm gonna say
- 4:01Speaker 1: little called footfair. Okay, So last night unfortunately aston Villa
- 4:08Speaker 1: beat west Ham.
- 4:10Speaker 2: Today I'll just pick out some of the games.
- 4:12Speaker 1: There's lots of classic games, but I've just picked out
- 4:15Speaker 1: like tomorrow, we got Chelsea from the Premier Division are
- 4:20Speaker 1: playing Morecambe from Division Two. We've got Leeds United from
- 4:26Speaker 1: the Championship playing Harrogate and these teams are only fifteen
- 4:30Speaker 1: miles apart. So it's good for the supporters, it's good
- 4:34Speaker 1: for Harrogate who probably been living in the shadow of
- 4:37Speaker 1: Leeds for years and years. We've got Liverpool from the
- 4:41Speaker 1: Premier are playing Acrington Stanley. Come on, show your age
- 4:46Speaker 1: who remembers that advert with the milk? It just stands
- 4:49Speaker 1: in your mind, doesn't it. Anyway, Liverpool are playing Akinston Stanley.
- 4:54Speaker 1: They're from Afield Division two and they're less than fifty
- 4:57Speaker 1: miles apart.
- 5:00Speaker 2: This must be the closest one.
- 5:01Speaker 1: Manchester City from the Premier Division are playing at Salford
- 5:05Speaker 1: City from a division two and they are just five
- 5:08Speaker 1: miles apart. Now, if you live in Salford and you're
- 5:13Speaker 1: a Salford supporter, it must be very tempting to just
- 5:18Speaker 1: drive five miles up the road and watch Manchester. See
- 5:22Speaker 1: it's tough for a team, a minnow team living in
- 5:25Speaker 1: a shadow of now a giant team. But I really
- 5:29Speaker 1: hope that Salford do well today and they get a
- 5:32Speaker 1: great support and show their neighbors what real football is
- 5:36Speaker 1: all about. Okay, so we've got this is a bit
- 5:40Speaker 1: interesting for the Kentish fans today. We've got Newcastle are
- 5:45Speaker 1: at home from the Premier and they're praying Bromley from
- 5:48Speaker 1: Division two. And it wasn't so long in fact last
- 5:51Speaker 1: year that Bromley were in the Nationwide League and they
- 5:56Speaker 1: won the playoffs. So that one's on at three o'clock
- 5:59Speaker 1: with BBS that's tomorrow. And the other one, the big,
- 6:03Speaker 1: big one that must stand out is a national league.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Tamworth are playing Premier League Tottenham Hotspur. Now Tamworth is
- 6:11Speaker 1: near Birmingham, so they're about one hundred and twenty miles apart.
- 6:14Speaker 1: The game's televised twelve thirty ITV one that's on Sunday,
- 6:19Speaker 1: but I've said it on Thursday. The sad thing about
- 6:22Speaker 1: this is that Tamworth won't get a chance to play
- 6:26Speaker 1: at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. They change the rules. There
- 6:31Speaker 1: must be a decision today Tamworth. Even if they get
- 6:35Speaker 1: to extra time, they've got to go to penalties. There's
- 6:37Speaker 1: got to be a result. So you know, the dream
- 6:40Speaker 1: of playing at a Premier League ground is gone, which
- 6:45Speaker 1: is a massive shame.
- 6:47Speaker 2: It kind of I don't know.
- 6:48Speaker 1: It's like a kick in the tee for tradition really
- 6:52Speaker 1: because a bit later on in the show, I've been
- 6:53Speaker 1: digging out some classic third round ties that have been
- 6:58Speaker 1: played over the years, and anyway we come to that shortly.
- 7:02Speaker 1: And also we've got who remembers back in nineteen seventy
- 7:06Speaker 1: nine what a third round tie that was. Again, i'll
- 7:10Speaker 1: tell you about that later. But the FA Cup always
- 7:13Speaker 1: used to be just Saturday afternoon three o'clock. Now it
- 7:17Speaker 1: spills onto Monday. There's even one game Monday evening a
- 7:21Speaker 1: Millwall from the Championship are playing National League Dagenham and Redbridge.
- 7:26Speaker 2: I mean it's good for TV.
- 7:27Speaker 1: It's on TV seven thirty, ITV to four, ITV four
- 7:32Speaker 1: and the two teams are just fifteen miles apart. So
- 7:37Speaker 1: it's basically a good local London derby. But there's the
- 7:42Speaker 1: actual third round. It started on Thursday and finishes on Monday.
- 7:47Speaker 1: But it's good for the punter if you're a TV
- 7:50Speaker 1: supporter and you want to just watch all the games
- 7:53Speaker 1: back to back. Were a great opportunity, right Okay. Now
- 7:57Speaker 1: during the week. I don't know whether it unnoticed, but
- 8:01Speaker 1: I didn't hear any of these songs.
- 8:02Speaker 2: There's a certain gentleman.
- 8:03Speaker 1: It would have been his birthday and no sorry, it
- 8:06Speaker 1: would have been the day that he passed away, tenth
- 8:09Speaker 1: of January twenty sixteen. And that gentleman made such a
- 8:13Speaker 1: name for himself back in the day, and his name
- 8:16Speaker 1: was David Bowie. So let's have a little tribute here
- 8:20Speaker 1: to David Bowie and a touch of starman.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Didn't know what.
- 8:35Speaker 1: Time it was that were.
- 8:39Speaker 2: I lean back on my razy.
- 8:47Speaker 1: Okay, So I just want to give I think it's
- 8:50Speaker 1: only fair to give Sitting Born to mention. Now Sitting
- 8:55Speaker 1: Born in the FA Trophy and on the first of
- 8:59Speaker 1: February they they've gotten a way draw against South in
- 9:02Speaker 1: United Now the incentive anyway obviously is Wembley, but the
- 9:08Speaker 1: winners get six thousand pound and the losers get one thousand,
- 9:11Speaker 1: seven hundred and fifty. Now the capacity at roots Hall
- 9:15Speaker 1: is currently eleven thousand, five hundred, but the record attendance
- 9:20Speaker 1: back in nineteen seventy nine was again in the third
- 9:23Speaker 1: round of the FA Cup, when thirty one thousand and
- 9:27Speaker 1: thirty three people squeezed into roots Hall and they played Liverpool.
- 9:32Speaker 1: And do you know what, It was just by sheer
- 9:35Speaker 1: accident that I found a clip on YouTube of this game,
- 9:40Speaker 1: and before I started the clip, I didn't notice score.
- 9:44Speaker 2: Oh my word, what a great game.
- 9:46Speaker 1: It was a typical old English nineteen late nineteen seventies.
- 9:50Speaker 2: In the snow.
- 9:51Speaker 1: You know all that had been done with the pitch
- 9:55Speaker 1: is was they swept the Lons and probably the groundsmen
- 9:59Speaker 1: about our past two. Oh well, get out with the
- 10:01Speaker 1: broom and sweep the Lions. And the ball didn't go anywhere,
- 10:05Speaker 1: The ball got stuck in the snow.
- 10:07Speaker 2: We had people, I mean, world class players.
- 10:12Speaker 1: I've just got a few names here, Ray Clements, Graham Sooners,
- 10:15Speaker 1: Jimmy Case, McDermott, Hanson, fairclough Dale, Gleish, Kenny dal Gleish
- 10:21Speaker 1: he got the ball, normally he would turn on a sixpence.
- 10:23Speaker 2: He couldn't do a thing.
- 10:25Speaker 1: Ray Kennedy great goalscorer, and Steve Highway used to skin
- 10:29Speaker 1: wingers got nowhere and South End adapted to the conditions
- 10:35Speaker 1: and in the last five minutes of the game they
- 10:37Speaker 1: absolutely hammered Liverpool. But at the score Neil Neil, usual
- 10:42Speaker 1: thing that happens. But at least they got a chance
- 10:44Speaker 1: to go to anfield. They had their day. They went
- 10:46Speaker 1: to anfield and they lost free Neil, but there was
- 10:50Speaker 1: absolutely taking no prisoners. Then what a great memory for
- 10:53Speaker 1: South End supporters. So yeah, so that came from me
- 10:59Speaker 1: sort of chasing up FA trophy stuff and so good
- 11:04Speaker 1: luck to sitting Born on the first of February when
- 11:07Speaker 1: they play South End. That must be worth a little
- 11:09Speaker 1: trip down there. Actually, I think that'd be a pretty
- 11:12Speaker 1: good game. I love that track. That's Paul la Carle.
- 11:27Speaker 1: Where have all the cowboys got nineteen ninety six? Okay,
- 11:31Speaker 1: can't believe it's twenty two already, So we better crack
- 11:35Speaker 1: on and I've got some more stuff here about the
- 11:38Speaker 1: third round and I'm going to take you back now
- 11:40Speaker 1: over the years some of the giant killings that took
- 11:43Speaker 1: place in the third round this weekend are very many
- 11:49Speaker 1: years ago. So we're going to in no particular order
- 11:52Speaker 1: this Actually we're going to jump back to seventh of
- 11:55Speaker 1: January nineteen eighty nine when non league Sutton were at
- 12:00Speaker 1: home to Division One at the time, and now that's
- 12:04Speaker 1: eighty nine. Don't forget the Premier League didn't start till
- 12:07Speaker 1: ninety two, so Coventry were in the top flight and
- 12:11Speaker 1: it was only that I think it was year season
- 12:14Speaker 1: before they'd actually won the cup. Anyway, something beat them
- 12:17Speaker 1: two to one. So what weekend that must have been.
- 12:21Speaker 1: So this is I'll tell you about the most famous.
- 12:23Speaker 2: One of all.
- 12:24Speaker 1: You're all going to remember this way February seventy two.
- 12:29Speaker 1: It started off at home Newcastle, Newcastle two here for two.
- 12:35Speaker 1: In the replay, well, no one will forget that Ronnie
- 12:39Speaker 1: Radford long range strike to make it one all Malcolm
- 12:44Speaker 1: McDonald who was playing for Newcastle, and the cross come
- 12:47Speaker 1: over and he leaped head and bounds to not the
- 12:52Speaker 1: ball in to take the lead for Newcastle. But that
- 12:56Speaker 1: goal by Ronnie Radford made it one all. The crowd
- 12:59Speaker 1: went man run onto the pitch who can blame him?
- 13:03Speaker 1: Then extra time come along another name that will live
- 13:07Speaker 1: in the memory and the annals of football history. Ricky George.
- 13:12Speaker 1: He turned on what must have been a dust been lit.
- 13:15Speaker 1: It was so maddy and he hit the winner and
- 13:18Speaker 1: the crowd went ballistic. That was in nineteen seventy two
- 13:22Speaker 1: and sadly last year, last November, I think it was
- 13:25Speaker 1: Ronnie Radford passed away, but what a legacy he left.
- 13:30Speaker 1: Moving on to January two thousand and three, now Shrewsbury
- 13:34Speaker 1: Town were up against Everton and Shrewsbury Town were in
- 13:39Speaker 1: the bottom. They were right at the bottom of the
- 13:41Speaker 1: Football League and a young Wayne Rooney was playing for Everton.
- 13:46Speaker 1: But Shrewsbury scored the winner in the eighty ninth minute
- 13:49Speaker 1: and they beat him to one. There's so many goals
- 13:52Speaker 1: in the third round extra time, you know, eighty ninth,
- 13:56Speaker 1: ninetieth minute, you just on the edge of your see okay,
- 14:01Speaker 1: moving on to a ninety one. Now this is a
- 14:04Speaker 1: good one for Ishmian League followers. West brom Jalbion. We're
- 14:08Speaker 1: in Division two at the time and Ishmian League Woking
- 14:15Speaker 1: beaten four to two at the Hawthorns and I love
- 14:19Speaker 1: this because this always used to come up and this
- 14:21Speaker 1: sort of thing every year computer specialist Tim buzaglo Is
- 14:25Speaker 1: called a hat trick and whenever there was like minnows
- 14:27Speaker 1: against giants, it was always like, yeah, he's a blowuster,
- 14:30Speaker 1: he's electrician. Yeah, he can't stay after the game, he's
- 14:33Speaker 1: got a job to do. Such great grassroots stories. Moving
- 14:38Speaker 1: on to January ninety two, Wrexham played Arsenal at Rixham
- 14:44Speaker 1: Rerexham were rooted at the bottom of the four Division.
- 14:47Speaker 1: The Gunners went one nil up and Mickey Thomas scored
- 14:50Speaker 1: a stunning free kick to make it one all again.
- 14:53Speaker 1: I saw this on YouTube a few days ago. It
- 14:55Speaker 1: hit the back, it didn't break the back of the net,
- 14:57Speaker 1: I don't know. And then Steve Watkins went on and
- 15:01Speaker 1: they scored two to one and the Wrexham beat Arsenal
- 15:03Speaker 1: two to one. Now, AIDI will love this one if
- 15:06Speaker 1: you're listening, Ad, because I know that when Folkson went
- 15:09Speaker 1: to Wrexham, I think you told me Mickey Thomas made
- 15:13Speaker 1: you a cup of two?
- 15:14Speaker 2: Is that right?
- 15:17Speaker 1: So twenty nineteen, Newport County were in the fourth tier
- 15:21Speaker 1: of the English Football and they played Leicester City, who
- 15:24Speaker 1: are in the Premier Division and guess.
- 15:26Speaker 2: What, Newport beat them two to one.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Height for January twenty eleven, Stevenage, Now they've got a
- 15:33Speaker 1: great cup per pedigree. They were in the second division
- 15:37Speaker 1: of the English Football League and at home they beat
- 15:41Speaker 1: Newcastle Newcastle United, who were in the Premier at the time.
- 15:46Speaker 1: They beat them two to one. And then all right,
- 15:48Speaker 1: it's a big jump. But to twenty twenty three. They
- 15:52Speaker 1: played Aston Villa at Villa Park. Villa were leading with
- 15:56Speaker 1: two minutes to go. Villa had players sent off and
- 15:59Speaker 1: the was converted to make it one. Injury time, Den
- 16:03Speaker 1: Campbell made it two to one Stevenage and Stevenage will
- 16:06Speaker 1: rank fifty nine places below Aston Villa and they've beaten
- 16:10Speaker 1: two one at Villa Park. How good and romantic is that?
- 16:14Speaker 1: What memories those fans will have? And I hope that
- 16:18Speaker 1: some of those memories can be recreated again. Okay, so
- 16:23Speaker 1: it's time for call to al. Really, I've got one
- 16:26Speaker 1: more classic story. I've got to tell you about the
- 16:29Speaker 1: three third round of the FA Cup. But I'm going
- 16:32Speaker 1: to play this song now. I love this one is
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yusundor and Nina Cherry. It's called seven Seconds Now When
- 16:38Speaker 1: I had a guest in here once upon a time
- 16:40Speaker 1: at Kersey Hogbin.
- 16:42Speaker 2: This came up on the playlist and it's so funny.
- 16:46Speaker 1: Kirsty is a cold water swimmer and she said that
- 16:50Speaker 1: I was born to this song. So I thought she
- 16:54Speaker 1: was just like you know, I had an affiliation with it.
- 16:56Speaker 2: But she wasn't.
- 16:57Speaker 1: When her mum was giving birth, this song was actually
- 17:00Speaker 1: playing and it's it was such a funny moment on
- 17:05Speaker 1: the on the radio station.
- 17:07Speaker 2: So let's have a little listen back.
- 17:08Speaker 1: This is for you, Kirsty Us and Door and Nanny
- 17:10Speaker 1: Cherry and seven seconds Monday. There there we go using
- 17:38Speaker 1: Door and Nana Cherry's seven seconds. It was in nineteen
- 17:42Speaker 1: ninety four year Kersey Hogbin was born to that song exactly.
- 17:46Speaker 1: I love that story, right, So it's time to cast
- 17:51Speaker 1: your mind back to third round of the FA Cup
- 17:54Speaker 1: nineteen seventy nine. On Saturday, January the sixth, it looked
- 17:58Speaker 1: like a pretty straightforward extra Cheffer Wednesday from the then
- 18:03Speaker 1: third Division. We're playing Arsenal. Was the score one all
- 18:08Speaker 1: game one. Then on Tuesday, January ninth, it was a
- 18:12Speaker 1: replay back of Highbury Arsenal won Sheffel Wednesday one, two games,
- 18:17Speaker 1: Game three. Now, the game three was played at Leicester
- 18:20Speaker 1: on Monday the fifteenth, Arsenal two, Sheffer Wednesday two. What
- 18:27Speaker 1: so it went on Game four Wednesday, January seventeenth, once
- 18:33Speaker 1: again at Leicester, loads of goals. Arsenal three, Cheffer Wednesday
- 18:39Speaker 1: three January twenty second. Game five at Leicester, Arsenal finally
- 18:47Speaker 1: cracked it. Arsenal two, Sheffer Wednesday Neil. Now that year
- 18:52Speaker 1: Arsenal went on to win the final, beating mansester United
- 18:55Speaker 1: three games to two, and they played ten games including
- 18:59Speaker 1: the final and then back in those days, actually Jackie
- 19:02Speaker 1: Cholten was manager of Sheffiel Wednesday and I do believe
- 19:06Speaker 1: Terry Neil was the manager of Arsenal. Now imagine five
- 19:10Speaker 1: games over that period of time and now they've just
- 19:14Speaker 1: got to have a result on the very first game.
- 19:17Speaker 1: All right, one extreme to another, but at least give
- 19:20Speaker 1: the minnows a chance to play at a big club.
- 19:23Speaker 2: Now does anyone remember that?
- 19:25Speaker 1: I mean, I've come across it by a mistake, but
- 19:28Speaker 1: it did bring back memories. I'm not an Arsenal or
- 19:30Speaker 1: a Sheffer Wednesday supporter, but I do remember those classic
- 19:33Speaker 1: games and you must have imagine how.
- 19:36Speaker 2: Fit those players were.
- 19:37Speaker 1: They were playing in muddy boggie pitches, you know, And
- 19:43Speaker 1: now players are wrapped up in cotton wall, they play
- 19:46Speaker 1: on billiard tables, and I'm going off on one ear. Okay,
- 19:52Speaker 1: so what we've got now, we've got a bit of
- 19:53Speaker 1: an end people. I think to always love these end people.
- 19:57Speaker 1: Always thought they were very underrated, and so why not
- 20:02Speaker 1: have a little listen to them. Send people there, don't
- 20:14Speaker 1: look any further, have a Saturday afternoon in watch the chilly,
- 20:19Speaker 1: watch the sport. In the meantime, I've found this on
- 20:23Speaker 1: the playlist. I just don't pit to cheer you up
- 20:25Speaker 1: on this freezing cold Saturday, and hopefully I'll be back
- 20:29Speaker 1: on Thursday. I am too sexy for my love, too
- 20:32Speaker 1: sexy for my love.
- 20:34Speaker 2: Love's going to leave.
