• 0:40
Speaker 1: we're excited to be here. And I think we've got
• 0:42
Speaker 1: some cool stories today. I know that I've got one
• 0:45
Speaker 1: that I've been waiting to share for weeks that i'd
• 0:47
Speaker 1: look a forward to reading to you. I think it's
• 0:49
Speaker 1: really cool. But before we begin, just want to remind

Speaker 1: take a look at it. Letter producers take a look
• 1:01
Speaker 1: at it. If we like it, we'll read it on

• 1:15
Speaker 1: be selected to win ten thousand dollars. So with that,
• 1:21
Speaker 1: let's let me let me, let me get go on
• 1:24
Speaker 1: with your with this story I've got, I've got two
• 1:27
Speaker 1: or three, I think. I think what I want to
• 1:35
Speaker 1: do is, have you got stories for this one? Y'all
• 1:39
Speaker 1: have stories for this one? Okay? So I think I
• 1:42
Speaker 1: want to end with that one story you guys know about.
• 1:45
Speaker 1: So I'll read a couple and then we'll come back
• 1:49
Speaker 1: to that end on that one. Is that cool? Works?
• 1:51
Speaker 1: All right? So? I had an employee who'd show up
• 1:55
Speaker 1: every day in a cardigan and scarf thank you, sweating
• 2:03
Speaker 1: like crazy with a fan blasting on him. He loved
• 2:08
Speaker 1: dragging about, bragging about all the supplements and metabolism boosting
• 2:14
Speaker 1: drugs he was taking. Then the real chaos started. He
• 2:19
Speaker 1: got caught driving with no license, no insurance, and in
• 2:22
Speaker 1: someone else's car. The court banned him from driving for
• 2:26
Speaker 1: one year, so he just went out bought another car
• 2:29
Speaker 1: and kept driving anyway. Not long after, he vanished for
• 2:33
Speaker 1: three days because he'd apparently gone into a coma for
• 2:37
Speaker 1: all the stuff he was taking. Eventually, We had to
• 2:40
Speaker 1: fire him for his attitude, not for missing not for
• 2:44
Speaker 1: missing work because he was We fired him for his attitude,
• 2:48
Speaker 1: constant sick days and get this asking me to lie
• 2:51
Speaker 1: to the court so he could get his license back.
• 2:54
Speaker 1: Now he's trying to sue for unfair dismissal. Some people
• 2:59
Speaker 1: just don't quit this this cat, this person sounded like
• 3:04
  Speaker 1: complete chaos.
• 3:05
Speaker 2: And they don't like cardigans or scarves either.
• 3:08
Speaker 1: It's like, what should that have to do with these
• 3:10
Speaker 1: just look at the same exact thing. It's like this
• 3:13
Speaker 1: person wore Cartigian scarfs every day. It was really terrible.
• 3:16
Speaker 3: It's like, what, well, I love how he followed that
• 3:18
Speaker 3: with sweating like crazy with the fan is at his desert.
• 3:22
Speaker 3: Why are you like, why are you? Oh my god,
• 3:26
Speaker 3: you're really trying to make a statement.
• 3:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, all right. So you know, sometimes when you hire people,
• 3:36
Speaker 1: they just they just can't get it, you know what
• 3:38
Speaker 1: I mean? You ever had that where maybe not, but yeah, yeah,
• 3:44
Speaker 1: but uh you may have. You'll see it. Sooner or
• 3:46
Speaker 1: later someone will come through and hopefully not at not
• 3:50
Speaker 1: at be checks, but where you know, you really think
• 3:55
Speaker 1: they might be able to do it, and then they
• 3:56
Speaker 1: get there and they for some reason, they can't get
• 3:58
Speaker 1: the job, they can't do the work. So back when
• 4:02
Speaker 1: I worked at a sandwich shop, not me, but somebody
• 4:05
Speaker 1: submitted this. I trained this sweet girl who just didn't
• 4:10
Speaker 1: quite get it. We explained a hundred times, never mix
• 4:14
Speaker 1: bleach and ammonia, clean different parts of the bathroom at
• 4:20
Speaker 1: different times. Simple One One night, she decides to save
• 4:26
Speaker 1: time by mixing them together. Next thing I know, she
• 4:30
Speaker 1: burst into the kitchen eyes, red nose, bleeding, coughing uncontrollably.
• 4:34
Speaker 1: We had to call an ambulance for shut the place
• 4:37
Speaker 1: down early and air it out overnight. I've never worked
• 4:41
Speaker 1: in a sandwich shop, so I don't know the cleaning,
• 4:43
Speaker 1: but maybe people who do understand this is something you
• 4:46
Speaker 1: don't do mix this stuff. You'd think that would teach
• 4:50
Speaker 1: her a lesson. Nope, she did it again two months later.
• 4:55
Speaker 1: This was the same girl who once got sanitizer in
• 4:58
Speaker 1: her eye but refused to rints it out because it
• 5:01
Speaker 1: would ruin her makeup and.
• 5:06
Speaker 2: Scared dates. Goodness, scariest is a lot.
• 5:09
Speaker 1: I mean just say, I could see that you're like
• 5:12
Speaker 1: trying to blink it out with you know, and constantly,
• 5:15
Speaker 1: she constantly had to be reminded to wear Now, this
• 5:17
Speaker 1: is the one that got me of all of that.
• 5:20
Speaker 1: She constantly had to be reminded to wear gloves when
• 5:23
Speaker 1: making the sandwiches. She eventually was fired. Yeah, that sounds
• 5:30
Speaker 1: like one of those who just done right. She started
• 5:32
Speaker 1: out this right. She never had someone that just doesn't
• 5:34
  Speaker 1: get it.
• 5:34
Speaker 3: I won't even think about mixing those two days because
• 5:36
Speaker 3: just Alonia itself doesn't have water.
• 5:40
  Speaker 1: I've never worked I don't think I've ever worked with
• 5:41
Speaker 1: either one of them. Well maybe Bleach, but I don't
• 5:45
Speaker 1: think I would think about putting them together. But I
• 5:48
Speaker 1: think that the whole story what got me was can
• 5:50
Speaker 1: you imagine looking across the counter or someone making your
• 5:53
Speaker 1: sandwich and they reached their hand, just their bare hand,
• 5:56
Speaker 1: until whatever it started with it, You're like you you
• 6:02
Speaker 1: were not a good hire. You were not a good hire.
• 6:05
Speaker 1: Oh my gosh. All right, So let's who's next. Lindsay,
• 6:10
Speaker 1: all right, So let's let's hear it. Lindsay, what's up?
• 6:13
  Speaker 1: All right?
• 6:14
Speaker 2: So this first story says, back when I was doing interviews,
• 6:18
Speaker 2: I had a candidate who seemed totally normal, polite, put
• 6:21
Speaker 2: together resume in hand. Then in the middle of our conversation.
• 6:25
Speaker 2: She casually says, technically, I'm not supposed to be in
• 6:28
Speaker 2: the building. That might cause you to pause. It turns
• 6:34
Speaker 2: out someone on another floor had a restraining order against her,
• 6:39
Speaker 2: and she just passed it off like it was no
• 6:40
Speaker 2: big deal, just like she'd forgotten a parking pass, probably
• 6:46
Speaker 2: that first into her left.
• 6:48
Speaker 1: Side swipe left. But I think that I think interview
• 6:53
Speaker 1: blow up stories must be just listening to recruiters talk
• 6:58
Speaker 1: and hang out with each other, very very califul. Yeah sure,
• 7:01
Speaker 1: that's probably where a lot of the more so than
• 7:04
Speaker 1: even the bad higher it's so many that didn't get
• 7:06
Speaker 1: in because they just completely demolished their interview in a
• 7:10
  Speaker 1: bad way.
• 7:11
Speaker 3: It's so funny. I'm not supposed to be here.
• 7:14
Speaker 1: What Yeah, there's this girl upstairs. I'm not supposed to
• 7:19
Speaker 1: be within five hundred feet long story, don't worry, want
• 7:23
Speaker 1: to affect my work?
• 7:24
Speaker 2: Great, great grain follot, hard worker.
• 7:27
Speaker 1: Hard worker? Oh wow, all right, team player, Yeah for sure.
• 7:33
Speaker 2: All right. So second story, he says, back when I
• 7:35
Speaker 2: worked at an electronics retail store, I wasn't technically a manager,
• 7:39
Speaker 2: but I was respected like one. And there was this
• 7:41
Speaker 2: guy who'd been there six years management loved him because
• 7:44
Speaker 2: he was tough with customers and a great salesman. The
• 7:48
Speaker 2: problem was, whenever a new hire showed promise, he'd get jealous.
• 7:52
Speaker 2: He'd actually train them wrong on purpose, just so they
• 7:54
Speaker 2: looked bad and he could swoop up their sales. He
• 7:58
Speaker 2: even tried that with me. The difference was I double
• 8:00
Speaker 2: checked everything with other people, so his tricks didn't work. Eventually,
• 8:04
Speaker 2: I just pretended to listen and then dipped the job
• 8:07
Speaker 2: the right way. It got so bad that he started
• 8:11
Speaker 2: feeling speeding his lies to everyone, new hires, veterans, even managers,
• 8:16
Speaker 2: just to make himself look better. Finally, during a company
• 8:18
Speaker 2: wide meeting, I called him out. He was furious and
• 8:20
Speaker 2: wanted to fight. A week later he quit, claiming he
• 8:24
Speaker 2: landed a better job. But then the truth came out
• 8:26
Speaker 2: and he came crawling back. A year later, broke as
• 8:28
Speaker 2: ever grown man battle. Yeah, there's some some complex issues there,
• 8:36
  Speaker 2: some inferiority things.
• 8:38
Speaker 3: Yeah, there's that's a lot you own that bad to
• 8:41
Speaker 3: be better than that.
• 8:43
Speaker 1: I think there are there are, there are people there
• 8:45
Speaker 1: aren't people who sabotage thosey to me.
• 8:48
Speaker 2: It intimidated by you know, talent coming in, you know
• 8:53
Speaker 2: people with the shiny newlace.
• 8:55
Speaker 3: So you're training them incorrectly and thinking that age, thinking
• 9:01
Speaker 3: that you're supervisident. I have to find out about it.
• 9:03
Speaker 3: It is just weird to me.
• 9:05
Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't know. I think there are there are
• 9:08
Speaker 1: people who are just really bad for culture, and they
• 9:15
Speaker 1: sabotage people because it's always just about keeping, you know,
• 9:19
Speaker 1: instead of continuing to try to be better themselves, about
• 9:22
Speaker 1: trying to keep other people from being from being good.
• 9:25
Speaker 1: And you, as a manager, you got to be able
• 9:27
Speaker 1: to find these people and get him out of your
• 9:30
Speaker 1: organization because they that's real.
• 9:32
Speaker 2: They do that, and the true bad apple spoil the
• 9:34
  Speaker 2: whole bunch.
• 9:35
  Speaker 1: Yeah for sure.
• 9:36
Speaker 2: Yeah all right, so last one says back in the nineties,
• 9:42
Speaker 2: probably born. Then I worked to it through a tenth
• 9:47
Speaker 2: agency at this old business center. I replaced a god
• 9:50
Speaker 2: we'll call him Joe, who everyone swore was great.
• 9:53
Speaker 1: I love when they do that. We'll call them Joe, Sure, Denise, Bob.
• 9:59
  Speaker 1: Right away.
• 10:00
Speaker 2: I noticed that things didn't add up. One office said,
• 10:03
Speaker 2: Joe told them a computer was dead and needing needed.
• 10:06
  Speaker 3: To be replaced.
• 10:07
Speaker 2: I fixed it in five minutes with a free anti virus.
• 10:10
Speaker 2: Turns out Joe had been taking broken machines home for himself.
• 10:14
Speaker 2: He'd spend entire days fixing computers that didn't need fixing,
• 10:17
Speaker 2: And when I checked one that he'd wanted to take,
• 10:20
Speaker 2: I discovered why and what he'd been filling it with.
• 10:23
Speaker 2: Let's just say, very inappropriate downloads. Nice. That was the
• 10:29
Speaker 2: beginning of his downfall. Later, Joe came back to harass
• 10:33
Speaker 2: me for his old job.
• 10:34
  Speaker 1: When I wrote, I mean, I gotta stop. I got
• 10:37
Speaker 1: this up. That's the beginning of his downfall. Like, oh, yeah,
• 10:40
Speaker 1: we found all this stuff on his computers, but that
• 10:43
  Speaker 1: wasn't that we didn't so that wasn't Yeah, we didn't
• 10:46
Speaker 1: get rid of him for that stuff.
• 10:47
Speaker 2: So when she reported him, police got involved and found
• 10:51
Speaker 2: out he wanted He was wanted on other charges. I
• 10:54
Speaker 2: dug into his old computers, found records of his shady
• 10:57
Speaker 2: dealings and handed them over. The FED showed up the
• 11:00
Speaker 2: next day, took the machine, and Joe went to prison.
• 11:02
Speaker 1: For five years. Wow.
• 11:04
Speaker 3: Not to sound like poor Jeo typical or anything, but like,
• 11:07
Speaker 3: why does it always start with one day in the it?
• 11:12
Speaker 2: Yeah, I know, let's let's stop the profiling right now.
• 11:18
Speaker 2: This is like a they could go a whole nother
• 11:20
  Speaker 2: direction with that.
• 11:22
Speaker 3: We've had a bunch of stories that start like now.
• 11:25
Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I think for some reason, the nestling cat story. Still,
• 11:32
Speaker 1: when I heard that story, I imagined him being an
• 11:35
  Speaker 1: IT person.
• 11:36
Speaker 3: We always come back to this, it's.
• 11:39
Speaker 1: Our it's our Lindsay's our favorite story so far.
• 11:41
Speaker 2: It came out that he was right, No, crazy people
• 11:46
  Speaker 2: are crazy.
• 11:47
Speaker 1: They are great, great, all right, poor Joe.
• 11:51
Speaker 2: All right, but you guys, are you all right?
• 11:54
Speaker 1: What did you discover this week? I really I would
• 11:58
Speaker 1: love to see and I think some of our some
• 12:02
Speaker 1: of our advertising on LinkedIn and stuff like that, it's
• 12:04
Speaker 1: going to start going out this week that we're we're
• 12:09
Speaker 1: encouraging people to submit and telling people about the show
• 12:11
Speaker 1: and ask them the story. So I'm really hopeful we'll
• 12:13
Speaker 1: starting to see more submissions of well well written stories.
• 12:18
Speaker 1: Will be fun. That's going to be exciting when that
• 12:21
Speaker 1: when that's when that starts to ramp up.
• 12:23
Speaker 3: Yeah, I can't wait to read interesting that people send them.
• 12:26
Speaker 3: Did I get to read them before me?
• 12:28
Speaker 1: Yeah? Right, you get to read all of book the Selector.
• 12:34
Speaker 3: All right. My first story today is about six years ago,
• 12:38
  Speaker 3: I was managing a McDonald's in a small Ohio town.
• 12:43
Speaker 3: One high school kid constantly complained about working Fridays, but
• 12:47
Speaker 3: that's all I had, so he took the shift halfway.
• 12:49
Speaker 3: Since the night he looked off like he'd been like
• 12:52
Speaker 3: smoking or something. Then during the dinner rush, I catch
• 12:55
Speaker 3: him flinging a whole tray of burgers at the ceiling.
• 12:58
Speaker 3: I send him outside to just to get him out
• 13:00
Speaker 3: of the way. Minutes later, the drive food girl freaks out.
• 13:04
Speaker 3: I lean out the window and there he is, stuck
• 13:07
Speaker 3: in a six foot drain. He dropped his keys, climbed
• 13:10
Speaker 3: in and kind of get out. Turns out on his break,
• 13:14
Speaker 3: he chugged eight beers at a party and came back.
• 13:19
Speaker 1: We had to haul him.
• 13:20
Speaker 3: Out of the drain hole, and I fired him on
• 13:24
Speaker 3: the spot. Honestly, he was lucky to walk away alive.
• 13:28
Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm wondering when he threw burgers to the ceiling
• 13:33
Speaker 1: why the firing didn't happen. It's like, hey, bro, yeah,
• 13:37
Speaker 1: let me go sweet would you clearly handling burgers for
• 13:40
Speaker 1: you and our burgers? Yeah, it's Friday night. No one
• 13:44
Speaker 1: wants to work off Friday night.
• 13:46
Speaker 3: I want to get ready for the midnight ritch of
• 13:48
  Speaker 3: people are here.
• 13:48
Speaker 1: And farm what they're doing see snow belt.
• 13:53
Speaker 3: Okay, here's another one. Oh, here we go. Back when
• 13:57
Speaker 3: I was the it guy, I got pulled into one
• 14:03
Speaker 3: of the strangest firings I've ever seen. An employee, we'll
• 14:06
Speaker 3: call him Raymond oh Oh was supposed to fly across
• 14:11
Speaker 3: the country for a big client conference. Tickets book, hotel,
• 14:15
Speaker 3: reserve meetings lined up, but when the event started, clients
• 14:18
Speaker 3: called asking where he was. He never checked into the hotel,
• 14:22
Speaker 3: never answered calls or emails, and vanished for a full week. Finally,
• 14:26
Speaker 3: I feel the conference ended. HR reached him. His excuse,
• 14:29
Speaker 3: he said, and I quote, I couldn't go.
• 14:31
  Speaker 2: I was kit.
• 14:33
Speaker 3: Kit that he said. Some guys grabbed him outside of
• 14:36
Speaker 3: a grocery store, held him for a few days, and
• 14:38
Speaker 3: then just let him go. When HR asked for a
• 14:42
Speaker 3: police report, he admitted he never filed one because they
• 14:45
Speaker 3: didn't really do anything to him. The kicker, his phone
• 14:51
Speaker 3: records showed he'd been making calls all week while he
• 14:54
  Speaker 3: was supposedly missing.
• 14:56
  Speaker 1: We fired him.
• 14:57
Speaker 3: Of course, he threatened to sue, claiming it was illegal
• 15:00
Speaker 3: to fire someone for being kidnapped. Never heard from him again.
• 15:05
Speaker 1: Didn't they all threaten the suit. Poor Raymond.
• 15:09
Speaker 3: Sorry he wasn't here yesterday. I was kidnapped.
• 15:11
Speaker 1: So there's Yeah, the stories, the absent tee stories are
• 15:18
Speaker 1: it's and it's weird. It's always the same person over
• 15:20
Speaker 1: and over and over again, and they always have you know,
• 15:22
Speaker 1: the stories just get kind of crazier and crazier. I
• 15:25
Speaker 1: bet that wasn't this first like absent tea story. He's
• 15:28
Speaker 1: just like he ran out of grandparents, he ran out
• 15:29
Speaker 1: of coles and hands. It all passed aways, you know.
• 15:34
Speaker 1: So now, yeah, so you had to had to do that.
• 15:39
  Speaker 1: Oh my gosh.
• 15:40
Speaker 3: Okay, here's my last one for today. I hired an apprentice,
• 15:44
Speaker 3: we'll call him Billy, who loved to go out drinking
• 15:48
Speaker 3: on Payday one Friday morning, he didn't show up. After
• 15:52
Speaker 3: hours of searching, he finally wandered and wreaking of alcohol,
• 15:56
Speaker 3: claimed he had a flat tire, then got it repaired.
• 16:00
Speaker 3: When asked for the receipt, he broke down and admitted
• 16:03
Speaker 3: he just overslept. He got a warning for life.
• 16:06
Speaker 1: Wait, is it like normal to ask for the receipt
• 16:08
Speaker 1: on something like that? I was like, what, you asked
• 16:11
Speaker 1: for a receipt on a flat tyre not a good culture,
• 16:15
  Speaker 1: I think.
• 16:16
Speaker 3: Fast forward to the very next payday, same thing doesn't show.
• 16:20
  Speaker 1: This time.
• 16:21
Speaker 3: He calls in claiming he's at the hospital getting a
• 16:23
Speaker 3: wart frozen with liquid nitrogen. The only problem was that
• 16:28
Speaker 3: the treatment was only available on Tuesdays.
• 16:29
Speaker 1: And it was a fright.
• 16:31
Speaker 3: So not a good lie there.
• 16:35
Speaker 1: Well, what gets me is they looked into it. Hey,
• 16:37
Speaker 1: when do you get these treatments?
• 16:38
Speaker 3: Come on? When pressed, he gave the same. He gave
• 16:42
Speaker 3: the name of the nurse, who happened to be the
• 16:45
Speaker 3: girlfriend of one of his old coworkers, standing right next
• 16:48
Speaker 3: to the phone. That coworker confirmed she was home asleep,
• 16:53
Speaker 3: so Billy tried to cover it up by pretending to
• 16:55
Speaker 3: be her on the fall. At that point, the instructor
• 16:59
Speaker 3: had an off and send it straight up the chain.
• 17:02
Speaker 3: I left the company soon after. But let's just say, billied.
• 17:06
Speaker 1: My god, this Billy, the I T guy it didn't
• 17:09
Speaker 1: know is an apprentice, No, I T guy. Well, thank
• 17:16
Speaker 1: you for You're welcome, no gory, You're welcome. Stories this
• 17:21
Speaker 1: time you would enjoy it, you know, it's yeah, I am,
• 17:25
Speaker 1: I give you a break. Yeah you did, all right,
• 17:32
  Speaker 1: Here's this is a this is a story. I'll tell
• 17:34
Speaker 1: you guys, you know it didn't get submitted, but I
• 17:39
Speaker 1: put it together. This is a story that is a
• 17:43
Speaker 1: true story, that is really been I think inspired a
• 17:48
Speaker 1: lot of y in me when I read, when I
• 17:50
Speaker 1: when I became aware of the story. And at the
• 17:54
Speaker 1: end here I'll explain that this person and that has
• 17:56
Speaker 1: become very well known in our industry because of this
• 18:01
Speaker 1: person's sister. So picture a woman named Kathy Sue Weaver
• 18:08
Speaker 1: living her dream in sunny Orlando. It's two thousand and
• 18:13
Speaker 1: one and Sue's fifty two years old. A creative force
• 18:17
Speaker 1: with a smile that could light up a room. Born
• 18:19
Speaker 1: in Missouri in nineteen forty nine, she carved her own path,
• 18:24
Speaker 1: snagging a degree in interior design an NBA and a
• 18:27
Speaker 1: longtime career in banking. But her heart beat for art,
• 18:32
Speaker 1: so she left the suits behind, moved to Florida in
• 18:35
Speaker 1: nineteen ninety four, and built embroidery concepts from the ground up.
• 18:39
Speaker 1: Her hands wove magic state seals for capitol buildings, delicate
• 18:44
Speaker 1: wildlife patterns stitched on to belts. Her home was her haven,
• 18:49
Speaker 1: filled with the scent of blooming jasmine from her garden
• 18:52
Speaker 1: and the hum of her sewing machines. Sue was quiet,
• 18:56
Speaker 1: she was fierce, and she was living life on her
• 18:59
Speaker 1: term until one bad hire stole all of it. She
• 19:08
Speaker 1: called for a simple air duct cleaning, trusting the company
• 19:12
Speaker 1: to send someone safe. Instead, they sent a monster right
• 19:16
Speaker 1: to her door. Early that year, Sue hired Birdines, a
• 19:22
Speaker 1: well known Florida store, to clean her home's air ducks.
• 19:26
Speaker 1: It was a nothing job, the kind you barely think about.
• 19:30
Speaker 1: You trust a big name company to do it right
• 19:32
Speaker 1: for you, but they didn't. They sent two technicians, unchecked, unvetted.
• 19:39
Speaker 1: One was Jeffrey Allen Hefling, thirty eight years old, a
• 19:42
Speaker 1: man with darkness in his past. At twenty three, he
• 19:46
Speaker 1: pleaded no contest to say and and caging a woman
• 19:50
Speaker 1: in Sibonole County in nineteen eighty six, while still on probation,
• 19:55
Speaker 1: he forced his way into another woman's home, hit her
• 19:58
Speaker 1: with a gun, sayed her, robbed her, and made her
• 20:01
Speaker 1: wash away the evidence. He was handed a life sentence,
• 20:07
Speaker 1: but by nineteen ninety eighty was out living with his parents,
• 20:11
Speaker 1: working as a repairman and Birdines. They let him walk
• 20:16
Speaker 1: right into Sue's world. He didn't strike right away. He
• 20:22
Speaker 1: waited lurking in the shadows, planning his move. Six months later,
• 20:27
Speaker 1: Sue's sanctuary became his hunting ground. Hefling didn't act during
• 20:33
Speaker 1: the first visit. He was patient, chilling, calculated, likely using
• 20:37
Speaker 1: that duck cleaning job to map out Sue's home her life.
• 20:41
Speaker 1: Six months later, on August twenty seventh, two thousand and one,
• 20:45
Speaker 1: he came back. The air grew heavy that day. Sue
• 20:49
Speaker 1: was essayed, beaten, and unalived, and the place in the
• 20:55
Speaker 1: place that she felt the safest. Then, to erase his sins,
• 20:59
Speaker 1: Hefling set her bedroom on fire. Firefighters rushed in, dousing
• 21:04
Speaker 1: the flames, only to find Sue's body. In the records,
• 21:07
Speaker 1: it couldn't It could have passed for a tragic fire,
• 21:11
Speaker 1: but the truth clawed its way out because DNA left
• 21:14
Speaker 1: at the scene screamed Hefling's name, tying back to his
• 21:18
Speaker 1: prior crimes. On October third, two thousand and one, cops
• 21:22
Speaker 1: grabbed him at a therapy session in Orange County. He
• 21:25
Speaker 1: played dumb, denying he knew Sue, but the evidence was
• 21:28
Speaker 1: a noose. In March two thousand and four, he took
• 21:31
Speaker 1: a plea deal to avoid death row, admitting to first
• 21:35
Speaker 1: degree on aliving, essay, arson and burglary. Now he's caged
• 21:40
Speaker 1: for life where the sun never touches in. One simple
• 21:45
Speaker 1: background check could have kept Sue alive. One person doing
• 21:49
Speaker 1: their job right could have stopped this nightmare. So this
• 21:53
Speaker 1: tragedy cuts deep because it didn't have to happen. If someone, anyone,
• 21:57
Speaker 1: had taken a moment to check Hefflin's past, Sue's laughter
• 21:59
Speaker 1: might still fill her home. That's the weight of what
• 22:02
Speaker 1: we do. Every recruiter, every HR pro, every talent acquisition
• 22:07
Speaker 1: warrior who runs those screens, who dig into the details.
• 22:12
Speaker 1: They're the ones standing between good people and really sometimes
• 22:17
Speaker 1: evil that walks among us. Sue's stories like a stark
• 22:21
Speaker 1: reminder that there's real darkness out there, and the work
• 22:25
  Speaker 1: of vetting isn't just paperwork. It's a shield, a lifeline,
• 22:31
Speaker 1: a way to keep sanctuary, sacred businesses, nonprofits, those things safe.
• 22:37
Speaker 1: Her sister, Lucia. Lucia didn't just grieve, She fought. She
• 22:42
Speaker 1: built a legacy to make sure no one else loses
• 22:46
Speaker 1: their sue to a bad hire. Sue's death left a
• 22:50
Speaker 1: hole in the world, but her sister refused to let
• 22:52
Speaker 1: it end with a fire and heart, she founded the
• 22:55
Speaker 1: Sue Weaver Calls commit to Always using screened, committing to
• 22:59
Speaker 1: all always using screened employees. She turned her pain into
• 23:03
Speaker 1: a movement, pushed the home service industry to wake up
• 23:06
Speaker 1: and prioritize safety. Her relentless work rippled across the field,
• 23:11
Speaker 1: inspiring companies to tighten their screening to honor the lives
• 23:14
Speaker 1: they touch. Because of her, countless homes are safe. Because
• 23:18
Speaker 1: of her, countless homes are safer today. So the Sue
• 23:25
Speaker 1: Weaver story, this story and stories like it, they like
• 23:28
Speaker 1: hit me right in my soul because you know, they
• 23:32
Speaker 1: remind me of why we do what we do every day.
• 23:34
Speaker 1: While we come to work as leaders, recruiters, HR pros,
• 23:38
Speaker 1: talent acquisition folks, you know your work isn't just a job.
• 23:44
Speaker 1: I believe it's also a calling. You know, you change
• 23:49
Speaker 1: and impact business culture, talent infuses and grows business help
• 23:56
Speaker 1: streams come true. But you also are out there at
• 24:01
Speaker 1: the same time protecting people at this at this and
• 24:06
Speaker 1: so I'm always thankful today that so many companies screen,
• 24:09
Speaker 1: and that there's HR pros and talent acquisition pros out
• 24:12
Speaker 1: there who take it very seriously. Uh, and this is
• 24:17
Speaker 1: a this story is like a reminder because I think
• 24:20
Speaker 1: and sometimes you can get where you're in the you're
• 24:24
Speaker 1: in the grind of hiring, and it becomes like a
• 24:28
Speaker 1: duty right and you it's a yeah, bit of you know,
• 24:31
Speaker 1: you you want to make it efficient, you want to
• 24:33
Speaker 1: make it fast, you want it to be good, and
• 24:36
Speaker 1: but you begin to you know, there's you need reminders
• 24:40
Speaker 1: that the work that you're doing is super important. It's
• 24:43
Speaker 1: one of the things that you know, I want all
• 24:45
Speaker 1: of our employees to know is that the work they
• 24:48
Speaker 1: do is worthy of their best efforts, because without it,
• 24:51
Speaker 1: best stuff happens. And Seue weaver story is a great
• 24:55
Speaker 1: reminder of that. So that's it for me today. But
• 25:01
Speaker 1: I've always I've always thought or it's made her story
• 25:10
Speaker 1: has always made a impression on it. One her sisters
• 25:14
Speaker 1: really impacted the screening industry and business across the country,
• 25:20
Speaker 1: pushing very very hard for screening. And I always say,
• 25:24
Speaker 1: we're in the prevention business, and so you never know
• 25:26
Speaker 1: what you're prevented because it didn't happen. But I'm betting
• 25:29
Speaker 1: Sue Weaver's death because of her sister's efforts has saved
• 25:33
Speaker 1: many more lives than her. So all right, but that's
• 25:38
Speaker 1: it for today. We appreciate it. We'd love to hear
