- 0:00Time to talk to Michael Hoffer from Hoffer's High School
- 0:02Sports, who is with us on Tuesdays at this time every
- 0:04single week, and this is no exception.
- 0:06Mike, how are things? Things are good I I understand
- 0:10the summer is here. Yes, I've heard, but the sunburn
- 0:13on my arms from this weekend certainly gives me good
- 0:16indication of that, as does the potentially record temperatures
- 0:19today. I I bet you you're going to be
- 0:21very happy about that 'cause I'm sure you've been outside in the
- 0:24cold and rainy, you know, weather for too many of these
- 0:28games already so far in the spring.
- 0:30So I bet you you're looking forward to this.
- 0:32Definitely, yeah. I got absolutely soaked last
- 0:35Thursday, I think it was, and there've been plenty of cold,
- 0:38rainy, windy days. I'll, I mean, 88's a little
- 0:41much, but I'm not going to complain.
- 0:42It's better than the alternative.
- 0:43It's better than 38, There's no doubt about it, Mike.
- 0:48So let's talk a little bit about, I guess we'll start off
- 0:51with baseball here. So another very eventful week
- 0:54here. I would be remiss if I didn't
- 0:55mention that the Yarmouth Clippers are now above 505 and
- 0:58four looking good in class BI don't think they're going to
- 1:01threaten for the state. Title but.
- 1:02They are, they're coming together as a team and I don't
- 1:04think they're alone. There's a lot of other very
- 1:06interesting programs that are putting together cool seasons.
- 1:08So tell me a little bit about where we stand.
- 1:10You know, Class A, Class B. How are things going in baseball
- 1:12right now? Yeah, You know, it's interesting
- 1:15that you mentioned Yarmouth, what a great story they are, you
- 1:18know, a team that missed the playoffs last year and it's
- 1:21quietly putting together a coming of age, right.
- 1:24And you're right, they probably are a year or so away from
- 1:26serious contention. But it's always encouraging
- 1:29what, you know, when a team turns the corner or becomes
- 1:32competitive a little bit quicker than expected.
- 1:34So like kudos to them on their on their starts and we'll see
- 1:37just how far they can take it top.
- 1:39You know, Class A continues to be very interesting.
- 1:43We got a lot of contenders. Big, big game tonight.
- 1:46Looking forward to a good game under the lights tonight where
- 1:49South Portland goes to Gorham, the red riots undefeated,
- 1:53another big win yesterday where they held off on Eagle 1.
- 1:56Nothing. And they're going to get a test
- 1:58of the Gorham team that's playing really, really well
- 2:00right now. So you know, I'm kind of
- 2:02interested to be the first chance I get to see either team
- 2:05honestly. So you know, those are two of
- 2:07the top teams in my mind. There's many other servers
- 2:10having a fantastic season. They're they're not letting up
- 2:1321 runs the other day in a win over Portland.
- 2:16They've had a couple of big explosions this year where
- 2:19they've scored a ton of runs. So what a turn around story
- 2:22they've been this season. Thornton Academy really starting
- 2:24to put it together. And then you get seems like
- 2:26Falmouth and Scarborough locally, who who remain very
- 2:29competitive, haven't been winning as much as you might
- 2:32expect. But you know, it's it's just
- 2:34going to be one of those post seasons where, you know,
- 2:37depending on who's pitching, anyone can beat anyone.
- 2:40You have one bad inning this season could be over.
- 2:42You get hot at the right time, like Biddeford did last year,
- 2:45and you can go all the way. So like, you know, now the
- 2:48weather's getting nicer, I'd expect even more offense.
- 2:51And, you know, and a lot of these teams have really good
- 2:54pitching too. So it's a good time to be a
- 2:55baseball fan. It is indeed a good time to be a
- 2:58baseball fan. Can you go over quickly how the
- 3:01selection for the playoffs works, You know, like where the
- 3:04line is for teams to make it in or out.
- 3:06I know that's obviously different every year a little
- 3:08bit depending on records and what not, but how does they how
- 3:11do they structure it? So as we're kind of gearing up
- 3:13for that time of the year, you know, who and how should I be
- 3:17keeping an eye on this? Yeah, I think 67% of the teams
- 3:21make it in. So for instance, in class AI
- 3:24think there's 16 teams, I believe 11 teams make the cut.
- 3:28And then when that happens, you know, the top five, we get a buy
- 3:30right into the quarterfinals, the others playing a prelim.
- 3:33And that's either a good or a bad thing, depending how you
- 3:35look at it. Sometimes the team will come out
- 3:38of that preliminary round and win a game and and get red hot
- 3:41and go on a run like Biddeford did last year.
- 3:44Yeah, I think it's been a perfect world.
- 3:45You like to have as much rest as possible.
- 3:47You like to line up your pitching as best as possible
- 3:50because, you know, in baseball you can't pitch the same guy
- 3:53every day. You know, in a perfect world,
- 3:55you have your ace go in the quarterfinals, a regional final
- 3:58and then the state final. So, you know, at least you can
- 4:00line it up that way. That's great.
- 4:02But yeah, so the answer your question is the top 2/3 of the
- 4:05teams get in. You know, I think there are,
- 4:08there are some regions where only 8 get in as others were
- 4:11upwards of a dozen or so do and they have multiple preliminary
- 4:14round games. But yeah, this is the time of
- 4:16year you start paying attention to the heel points early on,
- 4:19they don't make a lot of sense and you have teams that you
- 4:21don't expect near the top. But you know, as we go forward
- 4:24here, we're going to get a better idea of just, you know,
- 4:26who's lining up where, who has work to do, you know, who could
- 4:30conceivably get a home game, who can avoid a prelim.
- 4:33And these are all really important things.
- 4:34So you know that stuff that we'll be keeping an eye on here
- 4:37over the next couple of weeks. I hate to be a complete ignorant
- 4:41fool, but how do those points work?
- 4:43Like how are they awarded? I mean is it per wins?
- 4:46Is it like a complex formula? I always love this stuff,
- 4:50especially when I follow hockey because hockey is just the
- 4:52weirdest. But tell me a little bit about
- 4:54how they actually select that. I guess it's very complex.
- 4:57It's way beyond something I could ever explain, period, or,
- 5:00or explain in a 10 minute segment.
- 5:02But it's it, you know, it's who you play, who they played.
- 5:05It's all factored in together. So like strength of schedule
- 5:07kind of stuff kind of a little bit.
- 5:09Yeah, I mean, it's in a sense. And then it's supposed to all,
- 5:12you know, come together in a perfect world, everyone plays
- 5:15the same schedule and then, you know, the best teams would be
- 5:18determined that way. But you you factor in, you know,
- 5:21team is playing from other conferences.
- 5:23Sometimes the Class B team will mix in some A games and those
- 5:26are worth more. And you know, supposedly it's
- 5:28it's the most fairway. It's it's definitely beyond my
- 5:31understanding. So I wish I could give a better
- 5:33explanation. Maybe you have a caller call in
- 5:35and do a 5 second explanation but.
- 5:37That's not me, but it that a complex formula that no one
- 5:40understands is a perfectly fine answer.
- 5:42I think and everyone accepts yes.
- 5:45Before I leave baseball, is there any marquee matchups that
- 5:47you're really looking forward to this week or things that we
- 5:49should be keeping an eye on? I know we have a game today
- 5:51against Freeport. It'll be interesting to see
- 5:53whether or not they can keep rolling, which will be cool.
- 5:56Any others that are on the list that that you're really excited
- 5:58about? Yeah, I mean that you've got, I
- 6:01mentioned the go on South Portland game tonight.
- 6:03It's going to be huge for, you know, who's going to be at the
- 6:05top of class AS and tomorrow you've got a Greeley Cape
- 6:09showdown. They've been that last week with
- 6:11really one handily at home. But Rangers have really been
- 6:13struggling for the most part over the last couple weeks.
- 6:15Another loss yesterday to Poland like Cape.
- 6:18Would love some revenge over at their place.
- 6:20So looking forward to seeing those two teams tomorrow.
- 6:23Haven't had a chance to catch up with the Rangers yet so I'm
- 6:26really playing catch up on baseball this week Matt.
- 6:28It's just so many games I plan to cover here over the last few
- 6:31weeks have been rained out, so this is the time to get a crash
- 6:34course on some of these top teams.
- 6:35Indeed. So let's turn our attention to
- 6:37baseball's cousin, softball. How are things going on the
- 6:40softball side? And the same question, really.
- 6:42I mean, like, what have we learned about Class AB and some
- 6:44of these teams? Obviously, I think some of the
- 6:47juggernauts continue to roll and there's some very interesting
- 6:49stuff, you know, games going on and and awesome players.
- 6:52Tell me a little bit about what we're seeing.
- 6:55Yeah, I have been able to actually to see quite a bit of
- 6:57softball the last few days and, you know, class AS clearly
- 7:00services the gold standard. They have dominated everyone.
- 7:02They've played. They've played all the top
- 7:05contenders for the most part at this point.
- 7:07And you know, it's not just Addison Deroche throwing no
- 7:10hitters and striking out 17 every game, which is, you know,
- 7:13ultimately that helps. Amazing it's amazing, but that
- 7:16line up just they have no holes. They have a lot of girls top to
- 7:20bottom who who can hit and get on base and over the course of
- 7:23the multiple innings that's going to wear you down.
- 7:25The fascinating thing for me for classy S is you know who's the
- 7:28number two team and there's a lot of really good teams that
- 7:31are pretty even that are jockeying right now.
- 7:33Gorms maybe establish themselves nice come from behind win over
- 7:37Windham last night, very therapeutic win for the Rams.
- 7:41They hadn't beaten Windham in eight years and including they
- 7:43lost to Windham in last year's playoffs.
- 7:45So as a big win for them coming from behind, eight runs in the
- 7:48bottom of the sixth, Fun game under the lights there.
- 7:51They certainly stake their claim, as did Westbrook with a
- 7:5419 to three win at Scarborough yesterday.
- 7:56Shocking that they put up so many runs and one so easily.
- 8:00Four runs in the first and then five in the second, five in the
- 8:03third, five in the 4th and they're really seem to be
- 8:06clicking at the right time. South Portland's really put
- 8:08together a great year. Come from behind, walk off win
- 8:11over TA yesterday. So, you know, a lot of
- 8:14excitement there. I was still would not write
- 8:16Windham off. You know, Scarborough I think
- 8:19got off to a great start. They're going to bounce back.
- 8:22So those two through 7 teams, if you will, are really it's going
- 8:27to be an interesting battle is they jockey.
- 8:29You want to finish second, right?
- 8:31You get 2 home playoff games, you avoid service till the
- 8:34regional final even if you finish third, you can
- 8:36conceivably do that. But clearly right now the Stags
- 8:39are the team to beat. And I think Mordomic Valley,
- 8:40same thing goes in Class B South of defending champs there.
- 8:45And then of course, over to lacrosse.
- 8:47What's happening in the world of lacrosse that we need to be
- 8:50keeping our eyes on right now? We're getting to the, I think,
- 8:53interesting part of that season as well.
- 8:56Absolutely huge showdown today down in Kennebunk.
- 8:59We get a rematch of last year's state final Windham upset
- 9:02Kennebunk last year handed them their only loss.
- 9:05The Rams clearly look like the team to beat this time around
- 9:08and would love a little dose of revenge.
- 9:10So that'll be a good battle here this afternoon.
- 9:13And you know, you've got a lot of other teams looking really
- 9:16good to Thornton Academy with, with our athletes of the week
- 9:19this week. Sheriff is playing as well as
- 9:21anybody. Falmouth, Yarmouth also in the
- 9:24hunt there. So girls across, you know, a lot
- 9:27of exciting things going on. On the boys side.
- 9:29It still looks like TA and Falmouth are on a collision
- 9:32course. They don't play till June 2nd.
- 9:34So you know, neither team has been seriously tested yet,
- 9:37although Falmouth will get a very good Yarmouth team coming
- 9:39up here on Friday. I think Yarmouth's the third
- 9:42best team. They've moved up to Class A this
- 9:44year, really proved like they belong.
- 9:46So we've got some really exciting games, which is what
- 9:49you want. You want, right?
- 9:50You'd rather have these premier matchups toward the end of the
- 9:53season, regardless of what the sport is.
- 9:55You want your best games toward the end.
- 9:57They're great measuring sticks. They really get you prepared for
- 10:00playoffs. And, you know, we're going to
- 10:01have no shortage of those showdowns here coming.
- 10:03Up the Athlete of the Week was of course awarded yesterday.
- 10:07Let's make sure that that person gets all the recognition that
- 10:09they deserve. Who did you have this week for
- 10:12your Athlete of the Week? This year's select this week's
- 10:15selection sorry is Oceano Lamar of Thornton Academy girls
- 10:18lacrosse standout. She truly does it all.
- 10:21She can score some goals, but she's dominant in the draw
- 10:24circle and terrific on ground balls, setting up teammates, all
- 10:28the little things that help you win games.
- 10:29But she's really one of the premier players in the state.
- 10:32Only a junior had three goals and a pair of wins in each each
- 10:37win last week, including an absolute downpour at
- 10:39Scarborough, which I had the pleasure of standing outside
- 10:42for. So she's she's really come on
- 10:44her team's on a win streak. They have a big victory over win
- 10:47them with their credit, they've only lost to Kennebunk.
- 10:50They might be the second best team when all said and done, but
- 10:53this is a team that I think many people felt was still a year
- 10:55away. They are not.
- 10:57They are they're here. They're here to stay.
- 10:59And and she's a big reason why. So oh, Sheila Mark,
- 11:02congratulations to her. A lot of fun to watch and she's
- 11:06only getting better. All right, that's unfortunately
- 11:08where we're gonna have to end because we are out of time.
- 11:10Make sure you subscribe to Hoffers High School sports.com
- 11:13and check things out. I believe we got some polls
- 11:15dropping on team rankings here today, so make sure you check
- 11:19those out as soon as they drop and all the other good coverage
- 11:21that you see there every single week.
- 11:22Thanks a lot, Mike, and we will talk next Tuesday.
- 11:25Sounds good man, I look forward to it have.
- 11:27A good one.
