- 1:44Speaker 2: Financial Service Group, Inc. P and C Bank National Association
- 1:48Speaker 2: Member FDIC. What are your thoughts on what we can
- 1:52Speaker 2: do to improve the K through twelve education system and
- 1:57Speaker 2: then eventually make college more affordable for people here in
- 2:00Speaker 2: the United States.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Yeah, you know, one of the things that we should
- 2:03Speaker 1: be looking at very quickly is I said when I
- 2:05Speaker 1: was running for president. I said this on the South
- 2:07Speaker 1: side of Chicago with a pastor in Court Brooks for
- 2:11Speaker 1: teaching preaching at his church, and I focused on the
- 2:15Speaker 1: fact that everybody in the country, say, people living in
- 2:21Speaker 1: poverty have quality education options on the table. If you're
- 2:26Speaker 1: the richest Americans, you send your kid to the premier
- 2:29Speaker 1: private school you can find. If you are middle income
- 2:33Speaker 1: or affluent Americans, you choose the neighborhood with the best schools,
- 2:38Speaker 1: and then you move into those neighborhoods. It's only the
- 2:41Speaker 1: poorest Americans who do not have quality K through twelve education.
- 2:46Speaker 1: One of the fastest ways for us to improve that
- 2:49Speaker 1: is to allow for some form of school choice to
- 2:52Speaker 1: be a part of the education apparatus in our poorest areas.
- 2:56Speaker 1: The good news is seventy two percent of African American parents,
- 3:00Speaker 1: sixty eight percent of Hispanic parents, about eighty percent of
- 3:03Speaker 1: Asian parents, and overall eighty two percent of blue collar
- 3:07Speaker 1: parents all agreed with some form of school choice. Rather
- 3:11Speaker 1: that's charter schools, private schools, some hybrid of public schools,
- 3:16Speaker 1: parochial schools. Giving the parent more choices will give the
- 3:21Speaker 1: kid the best chance to succeed in life. And that
- 3:24Speaker 1: is the fastest way for us to improve the plight
- 3:27Speaker 1: of K through twelve education. Classic example, before she passed away,
- 3:32Speaker 1: Senator Feinstein, myself, Corey Booker, and Senator Ron Johnson, four
- 3:37Speaker 1: of US two Republicans Democrats worked on a school choice
- 3:41Speaker 1: through the d C Opportunity Scholarship program that's been around
- 3:45Speaker 1: for decades. Four of us took that on as a
- 3:49Speaker 1: way of extending the life of it, and we've seen
- 3:52Speaker 1: tremendous success to those charter schools in d C. We
- 3:55Speaker 1: have some New York City has some strong charts is
- 4:00Speaker 1: called the Success Academy. What we've seen in both of
- 4:02Speaker 1: those examples is at the graduation rate for those kids
- 4:06Speaker 1: from high school is over ninety percent comparatively speaking, with
- 4:10Speaker 1: between forty eight and fifty four percent for the non
- 4:14Speaker 1: charter school students. Number one, number two college attendance is
- 4:19Speaker 1: about sixty percent higher comparatively speaking, and the grades obviously
- 4:25Speaker 1: reflect that as well. So it's fast way for us
- 4:28Speaker 1: to get there. On the higher education spent ten years
- 4:32Speaker 1: on the Education Committee, having been the kid who was
- 4:34Speaker 1: struggling in high school. And I'm sure you guys all
- 4:37Speaker 1: graduated cumlauting. I graduated, thank you all, lotting. So I
- 4:41Speaker 1: had to be at the bottom of the fifty percent.
- 4:43Speaker 1: That was where I found my unhappy self. But one
- 4:45Speaker 1: of the things I learned along the way was if
- 4:47Speaker 1: we're going to improve the opportunities of higher education, then
- 4:51Speaker 1: we have to look at community education as a real alternative.
- 4:55Speaker 1: So in South Carolina, Tennessee and many other states, you
- 4:59Speaker 1: can get your first two years of college paid for free,
- 5:03Speaker 1: go to a community college, and then in those states
- 5:07Speaker 1: your college credits transfers to Clemson University, or if you're
- 5:12Speaker 1: a smarter person like me, Carolina Game Cocks. As I'm
- 5:16Speaker 1: a fan, you can go there as well. To my
- 5:18Speaker 1: Clemson fans, I'm sorry you'll have too many national championships.
- 5:20Speaker 1: I just had to put a plug in for the
- 5:22Speaker 1: game costs, so you can go to some of those
- 5:23Speaker 1: schools and have a get a really good education and
- 5:26Speaker 1: pay half the price for your four years of education.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Second thing you can do is look at what we've
- 5:32Speaker 1: done for hbc USE. When we were in the midst
- 5:35Speaker 1: of COVID, we canceled the debt led by myself and
- 5:42Speaker 1: others on the team. We've canceled one point three to
- 5:46Speaker 1: one point four billion dollars of HBCU debt and then
- 5:51Speaker 1: took it to the highest level of funding in the
- 5:54Speaker 1: history of the country and made that funding permanent. Because
- 5:57Speaker 1: one of the things I recognize is if you want
- 5:59Speaker 1: to focus on making a profit, and that has to
- 6:02Speaker 1: be a part of the deal. Looking forward for our
- 6:05Speaker 1: community specifically, you have to make sure that the kids
- 6:08Speaker 1: are lifelong learners and those kids who are coming from
- 6:11Speaker 1: disadvantage communities disadvantaged schools have access to the type of
- 6:16Speaker 1: training to get up to speed so that you can
- 6:19Speaker 1: then have four good years of quality education. And so
- 6:22Speaker 1: we focused attention on some of those institutions that felt
- 6:27Speaker 1: a part of their mission was helping the underserved, and
- 6:30Speaker 1: so we focus on that. So those are two really
- 6:32Speaker 1: good ways of reducing the costs of education in our
- 6:36Speaker 1: nation long term. But let's just be honest. The person
- 6:40Speaker 1: who graduates from school today has about thirty five thousand
- 6:43Speaker 1: dollars of college debt. Thirty five thousand dollars of college
- 6:46Speaker 1: debt translates into about two million dollars of additional lifetime income.
- 6:51Speaker 1: That translates into a deal I would say yes to
- 6:54Speaker 1: if I couldn't do it any other way.
- 6:56Speaker 3: An illegal alien from Guatemala charged with raping a child
- 7:00Speaker 3: in Massachusetts. An MS thirteen gang member from Al Salvador
- 7:04Speaker 3: accused of murdering a Texas. Man of Venezuelan charged with
- 7:08Speaker 3: filming and selling child pornography in Michigan. These are just
- 7:12Speaker 3: some of the heinous migrant criminals caught because of President
- 7:16Speaker 3: Donald J. Trump's leadership. I'm Christy nom the United States
- 7:19Speaker 3: Secretary of Homeland Security. Under President Trump, attempted illegal border
- 7:24Speaker 3: crossings are at the lowest levels ever recorded, and over
- 7:28Speaker 3: one hundred thousand illegal aliens have been arrested. If you
- 7:31Speaker 3: are here illegally, your next you will be fine nearly
- 7:35Speaker 3: one thousand dollars a day, imprisoned and deported, you will
- 7:39Speaker 3: never return. But if you register using our CBP home
- 7:43Speaker 3: app and leave now, you could be allowed to return legally.
- 7:46Speaker 3: Do what's right. Leave now. Under President Trump, America's laws,
- 7:51Speaker 3: border and families will be protected. Sponsored by the United
- 7:55Speaker 3: States Department of Homeland Security.
