Latest / Foul Territory / Red Sox offseason to-do list w/Healey: Bregman offer, Duran trade?
Transcript
- 0:08Speaker 1: It is the Red Sox edition of the off season
- 0:10Speaker 1: to do List, and we bring in our friend Tim Healey.
- 0:13Speaker 1: You can see his coverage in the Boston Globe, Red
- 0:15Speaker 1: Sox beat writer, also a great follow on Twitter at
- 0:18Speaker 1: Tim b Heally. Tim is funny. I'll say it for him.
- 0:21Speaker 2: Tim.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Great to see you, and let's get to the off
- 0:23Speaker 1: season to do list. Can you lay out one, two,
- 0:26Speaker 1: and three. You have to only give us three options,
- 0:28Speaker 1: then we'll elaborate from there.
- 0:31Speaker 3: The Red Sox have to work cut out for them,
- 0:32Speaker 3: so it's hard to keep it to three. But number
- 0:35Speaker 3: one has got to be re signing Alex Bregman and
- 0:38Speaker 3: or figuring out what Alex Bregman's deal is. Absolutely big
- 0:43Speaker 3: player last year, important to keep him this offseason. Number
- 0:47Speaker 3: two is the number two starter, right They have Garrett Crochet.
- 0:52Speaker 3: That trade worked out magnificently for them last year. Now
- 0:56Speaker 3: if they can slot in someone behind Crochet of Brian Bao,
- 1:01Speaker 3: they need somebody at first base or DH so they
- 1:06Speaker 3: need more dingers. Honestly, Trevor Story led the team in
- 1:09Speaker 3: home runs and RBIs last year and that's not gonna
- 1:11Speaker 3: cut it in twenty twenty six. So that's number three.
- 1:16Speaker 4: Okay, well, Tim, I'm gonna start with Bregman. Uh no, duh, no, duh.
- 1:21Speaker 4: They need to resign Alex Bregman. Yeah, because he solidifies
- 1:25Speaker 4: the defense on the left side of the infield him
- 1:27Speaker 4: and story, he brings the bat in the middle of
- 1:29Speaker 4: the order. And the biggest thing that he did from
- 1:32Speaker 4: watching the Red Sox from Afar, he brought a presence,
- 1:35Speaker 4: a calmness, and a confidence to this team that they
- 1:38Speaker 4: had sorely been lacking for a few years. So yeah,
- 1:40Speaker 4: this is like the biggest, no duh thing, And I
- 1:44Speaker 4: get that's why it's number one, but they absolutely have
- 1:47Speaker 4: to do what it takes to sign Alex Pregnant.
- 1:50Speaker 3: Yeah, and it's gonna be interesting because they're gonna have
- 1:52Speaker 3: I would think a lot of competition right look around
- 1:55Speaker 3: the league. The Tigers always get mentioned for Alex Bregman.
- 1:59Speaker 3: The the Mariners are sending swars in the free agency.
- 2:02Speaker 3: The Blue Jays probably, I would think, are gonna have
- 2:05Speaker 3: a lot of money to spend coming off their October
- 2:08Speaker 3: run and don't have a long term answer at third base.
- 2:12Speaker 3: The Phillies are gonna have a fascinating offseason. You could
- 2:14Speaker 3: see them getting in the mix on this. The Yankees
- 2:17Speaker 3: are always a threat, so there are a lot of
- 2:19Speaker 3: teams that are really good fits for Alex Bregman. So
- 2:23Speaker 3: the question becomes to me, if you know Bregman's almost,
- 2:29Speaker 3: you know, very likely looking at a five to six
- 2:31Speaker 3: maybe seven year deal one hundred and fifty one hundred
- 2:34Speaker 3: and seventy five maybe pushing two hundred million dollars. Is
- 2:37Speaker 3: Craig Breslo going to be comfortable getting uncomfortable and doing
- 2:43Speaker 3: what it takes to sign Alex Bregman. I'm not one
- 2:46Speaker 3: hundred percent sure that he's willing to make that move
- 2:49Speaker 3: if that's the territory.
- 2:50Speaker 2: It gets too.
- 2:51Speaker 3: But as we said, it's gonna be awfully important because
- 2:54Speaker 3: Bregman was important to them this past season.
- 2:57Speaker 1: A couple thoughts here and then, I think Kratz has
- 2:59Speaker 1: a thought or two about this as well. First of all,
- 3:04Speaker 1: no way the Tigers are going after him again. They
- 3:07Speaker 1: felt like it was personal. He turned down the most
- 3:10Speaker 1: overall money. That's just that's my take, and with some
- 3:12Speaker 1: people behind the scenes, I'm gonna throw that out there.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I think they were quite pissed off and they felt
- 3:17Speaker 1: like the message was sent that Detroit was not for him,
- 3:21Speaker 1: and they are like, thank you very much, We're not
- 3:24Speaker 1: going to help to drive up your price to so offseason,
- 3:26Speaker 1: just throwing that out out there. And then also I
- 3:29Speaker 1: wonder if we have owner John Henry or somebody else
- 3:34Speaker 1: involved THEO Epstein and friends that say, hey, Craig, this
- 3:39Speaker 1: might not check out on your end at this price,
- 3:42Speaker 1: but we still want to back Alex. Cora has more
- 3:45Speaker 1: influence as a manager than almost any other manager in
- 3:47Speaker 1: terms of front office moves. Your thoughts on all of that.
- 3:51Speaker 2: I agree.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I think any move of at this level ownership's going
- 3:57Speaker 3: to be involved John Henry, THEO. Alex Corer obviously has
- 4:01Speaker 3: the Bregman connection and will stump for Alex Bregman among
- 4:05Speaker 3: his other guys. So Alex Corer is not afraid to
- 4:09Speaker 3: make his voice heard in decisions.
- 4:11Speaker 2: Such as these.
- 4:12Speaker 3: So yes, when I you know, we talk about Craig
- 4:15Speaker 3: Breslow and his decision making and his philosophies and getting uncomfortable,
- 4:20Speaker 3: it won't be strictly a Craig Breslow discussion in conversation.
- 4:24Speaker 2: Totally agreed with that.
- 4:26Speaker 5: I imagined that yesterday Jim Bowden that free agency is a
- 4:30Speaker 5: lot about risk and like, don't know, don't know about
- 4:33Speaker 5: his history, how's he going to fit into the clubhouse? Check?
- 4:37Speaker 5: Check and check. So this has to be the most
- 4:41Speaker 5: This has to be the most slammed dunk for everybody
- 4:43Speaker 5: because Craig Breslo doesn't want to be.
- 4:44Speaker 4: Like, yeah, I'm the guy that got Bregman a deal.
- 4:46Speaker 4: How could you do that?
- 4:47Speaker 5: You saw what he did the year before. It's almost like,
- 4:50Speaker 5: how could you not do that? Because you saw what
- 4:54Speaker 5: he did with these young guys, with his production and
- 4:58Speaker 5: the fact that he's you know, he's built for Fenway.
- 5:02Speaker 2: Yeah, he checks all of the boxes.
- 5:05Speaker 3: At this time last year, Alex Bregman looked like he
- 5:08Speaker 3: checked all of the boxes and was exactly what they needed.
- 5:11Speaker 3: And then they flirted it was gonna happen, not gonna happen,
- 5:14Speaker 3: And it finally happened in February, right spring training was
- 5:18Speaker 3: getting going and that it worked out great, And yes,
- 5:21Speaker 3: Bregman had the injury and he s thirty two years
- 5:24Speaker 3: old now, I believe, and his second half wasn't that
- 5:28Speaker 3: good at the plate honestly, So sure I can see
- 5:31Speaker 3: some hesitations there, but you know, the fit which looked great,
- 5:35Speaker 3: actually is great, and he was the day one leader
- 5:39Speaker 3: of the team as soon as he walked in the room,
- 5:40Speaker 3: So losing him would set your way back in an
- 5:45Speaker 3: off season where you should be taking a big step forward.
- 5:49Speaker 5: Kind of hit two parts here. You said a number
- 5:52Speaker 5: two starter. First, I want to know, are they getting
- 5:55Speaker 5: a second starter to go behind, to go behind Crochet
- 6:01Speaker 5: or do you think they are going to get an
- 6:04Speaker 5: actual number two starter, somebody who's not even in the
- 6:08Speaker 5: number one type of category. And doesn't that mean when
- 6:14Speaker 5: you add in a number two type of starter to
- 6:18Speaker 5: this abysmal defense, that it becomes more of a number
- 6:22Speaker 5: three type of starter. Wouldn't they be more suited to Yes,
- 6:26Speaker 5: add that Ace and then figure out their defense.
- 6:30Speaker 3: Also, yes, there's a lot going on there. But when
- 6:34Speaker 3: I say they should add a number two starter, I'd
- 6:37Speaker 3: mean somebody who will be their number two, not you know,
- 6:42Speaker 3: a traditional quote unquote or sort of more middling number
- 6:45Speaker 3: two starter. Garrett Crochet is, you know, one of the
- 6:48Speaker 3: top three at worst, top five pitchers in baseball. So
- 6:54Speaker 3: there's almost nobody, almost nobody available who will slot in
- 6:57Speaker 3: a head of Crochet. But if you can get a
- 7:00Speaker 3: co Ace or really the Kurt Schilling to the Pedro Martinez.
- 7:04Speaker 3: Then you're starting to cook with gas in twenty twenty six.
- 7:07Speaker 3: And that's what I mean when I when they say
- 7:08Speaker 3: number when I say number two starter. As far as
- 7:11Speaker 3: the defense add there's a lot to figure out, especially
- 7:14Speaker 3: on the infield. But their outfield defense was amazing and
- 7:18Speaker 3: their catching defense Narvaia's was very good.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Connor Wong was better than the year before.
- 7:22Speaker 3: So when you look at Trevor Story up the middle,
- 7:26Speaker 3: Marcelo Meyer playing second or third race, I would think
- 7:29Speaker 3: at this point the defense should be pretty good next year.
- 7:34Speaker 3: But there are a lot of question marks to figure
- 7:36Speaker 3: out they're infield wise all right.
- 7:39Speaker 4: And then the third one you mentioned is Adas slugger
- 7:40Speaker 4: first base, tch pe A Lonzo's on the market. I'm
- 7:43Speaker 4: just saying, And all the time when you talk to
- 7:45Speaker 4: Alex Cora, what does he say, they need right handed power,
- 7:47Speaker 4: Alex Bregman right handed power, Pete Alonso right handed power
- 7:51Speaker 4: because they got a lot of lefties right Rome and
- 7:53Speaker 4: Anthony and the whole crew. But Bregman and Alonso would
- 7:56Speaker 4: look nice, I mean something like that. So who's a
- 8:00Speaker 4: possibility and will they spend because kind of in the
- 8:03Speaker 4: John Henry post, twenty eighteen world post Mookie, bed Time Bloom.
- 8:08Speaker 4: They don't really want to spend on these guys. Instead,
- 8:11Speaker 4: they're look for internal or cheaper options. Will they actually
- 8:14Speaker 4: spend and go get the power they need?
- 8:16Speaker 3: It's that's a great question, And because they haven't spent
- 8:21Speaker 3: for more than a half decade now, at least not
- 8:25Speaker 3: among the elite spending teams, it's going to be a
- 8:29Speaker 3: question until they prove otherwise. So I would think, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 3: it's all It's all connected, right, the Bregmann question, the
- 8:36Speaker 3: first base DH question. If you bring back Bregman, I
- 8:41Speaker 3: kind of feel like that thirty million dollar AAV is
- 8:45Speaker 3: already baked into the twenty twenty six twenty twenty seven
- 8:48Speaker 3: projections because you had them for theoretically that three year deal,
- 8:52Speaker 3: and when you were looking at you know where your
- 8:54Speaker 3: payroll is going to be in the coming seasons, you
- 8:56Speaker 3: had them penciled in for that number. Adding another big
- 9:03Speaker 3: nine figure contract on top of that is maybe a
- 9:07Speaker 3: big ask for the red Sox of recent years, but
- 9:11Speaker 3: I think they can swing it, especially if you know
- 9:13Speaker 3: they don't have Giligo making twenty two million dollars a
- 9:15Speaker 3: year on the qualifying offer we'll see what happens there.
- 9:18Speaker 3: That would sort of be a lot. But yeah, you
- 9:21Speaker 3: mentioned Pete A. Lonzo, he is the number one choice.
- 9:24Speaker 3: I'd say, I think he's exactly what they need. The
- 9:27Speaker 3: right handed bat, plays first base, can DH as much
- 9:30Speaker 3: as you want him to. Basically you can move some
- 9:33Speaker 3: other guys around those positions as merited, but him playing
- 9:36Speaker 3: basically every day, which is something that he does better
- 9:40Speaker 3: than almost anybody else in his career and Pencil Himan
- 9:44Speaker 3: for thirty five forty home runs, one hundred to one
- 9:46Speaker 3: hundred and twenty RBIs that's exactly what this Red Sox
- 9:50Speaker 3: team needs. Because yes, Alex korr talks about it all
- 9:53Speaker 3: the time. The right handed bat, the right handed power.
- 9:56Speaker 3: Bregman was supposed to be that and was that to
- 10:00Speaker 3: a degree, but in terms of offensive production, Alex Bregman
- 10:05Speaker 3: and Pete Alonzo are on different levels. The other guy
- 10:09Speaker 3: who gets mentioned is Kyle Schwarber. He's a lefty obviously,
- 10:13Speaker 3: so it's not quite the same. He's a little older,
- 10:15Speaker 3: maybe his contract will be shorter. And Alex Korra is
- 10:19Speaker 3: quite openly a big fan of Kyle Schwarber because of
- 10:23Speaker 3: his three months with the Red Sox in twenty twenty one.
- 10:27Speaker 3: That affection remains strong, so it wouldn't surprise me to
- 10:31Speaker 3: see interest strong interest there. But I think Peter A.
- 10:35Speaker 3: Lonzo is a better fit because of the right stuff.
- 10:37Speaker 5: And you said the nine figure contracts, Yeah, he got
- 10:42Speaker 5: rid of one. So if they don't, if they don't
- 10:44Speaker 5: sign another non figure contract, I'm not saying. I'm not
- 10:47Speaker 5: saying Bregman's included in that. I'm saying Bregman and someone else.
- 10:51Speaker 5: I think Red Sox fans and you can tell me
- 10:53Speaker 5: if I'm wrong. Red Sox fans would look at it
- 10:55Speaker 5: and go. So that was just a salary dump. We
- 10:58Speaker 5: were just trying to dump the rafi ever salary, which
- 11:00Speaker 5: would not be a good look, especially after clawing to
- 11:04Speaker 5: the playoffs with a younger team this year.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Yes, they, you know, in theory, should have that financial
- 11:11Speaker 3: wiggle room to maximize and on top of that, forget
- 11:15Speaker 3: the money. They never replaced Raphael Devers, the hitter at
- 11:18Speaker 3: the trade deadline, didn't add anybody to the lineup besides
- 11:21Speaker 3: Nathaniel Lowe and August and that was fleeting. So in
- 11:26Speaker 3: a sense, a Alonso or Schwarber would replace Devers and
- 11:31Speaker 3: that's something. That big bat hole remains a very big hole. So,
- 11:37Speaker 3: like we said at the outset, the Red Sox have
- 11:38Speaker 3: a lot of work cut out for them next the
- 11:40Speaker 3: next few months.
- 11:42Speaker 5: All Right, how about a trade piece. I want to
- 11:44Speaker 5: look at your team and say, Okay, does Jared Duran
- 11:48Speaker 5: fit into this future? Obviously lost to center field position
- 11:51Speaker 5: this year to a gold Glover Don Rafaela. Does excuse me,
- 11:56Speaker 5: does the trade of Jared Duran seem likely to add
- 12:02Speaker 5: some of these holes that you say they need to fill.
- 12:05Speaker 3: I think a trade of an outfielder is very likely.
- 12:09Speaker 3: And if you look at the outfielders the Red Sox have,
- 12:13Speaker 3: Jared Duran kind of feels like the odd man out
- 12:17Speaker 3: more than the other guys. And it will depend on
- 12:19Speaker 3: once the team, Once the Red Sox start talking to
- 12:21Speaker 3: other teams, who teams like and what they're willing to
- 12:24Speaker 3: give up, and that will shape a lot of this.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Because the Red Sox like Jared Durant and they'd be
- 12:29Speaker 3: happy to keep Jared Duran if they can make the
- 12:31Speaker 3: roster and the outfield work. So if some team wants
- 12:34Speaker 3: to blow them out of the water for will you
- 12:36Speaker 3: or bray you sure? Roman Anthony can go play red field,
- 12:40Speaker 3: but if somebody wants Jared Duran, then Roman Anthony will
- 12:42Speaker 3: play left. The wild card here is raf Fayela, who
- 12:45Speaker 3: is amazing at center.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Field, really streaky at the plate.
- 12:50Speaker 3: So I don't think they'll trade raf Fayela because as
- 12:54Speaker 3: an elite defender alone, his contract is really team friendly.
- 12:59Speaker 3: So you know, I think they'll keep Ralph Fayela. I
- 13:03Speaker 3: can't completely rule out that he's the one traded, but
- 13:07Speaker 3: you know, with going with Roman Anthony, Sadan, Ralph Fayela,
- 13:11Speaker 3: and then one of Duran and Abreu, that's a pretty
- 13:14Speaker 3: good outfield.
- 13:16Speaker 4: Hey how far how far behind are the Red Sox?
- 13:20Speaker 4: I mean, we saw the Yankees were in the World
- 13:21Speaker 4: Series two years ago, the Blue Jays are in the
- 13:24Speaker 4: World Series this year. How far behind are they? And
- 13:27Speaker 4: how much do you think in one offseason they can
- 13:29Speaker 4: make that jump? Because from what you're giving us, they
- 13:32Speaker 4: need a lot of help.
- 13:33Speaker 2: They do need a lot of help. They do need
- 13:35Speaker 2: a lot of help.
- 13:35Speaker 3: But I honestly think they can play in that top
- 13:39Speaker 3: tier in twenty twenty six if they make these additions right.
- 13:45Speaker 3: This year, for example, the standings were what they were
- 13:48Speaker 3: the Red Sox were not the best team in the division,
- 13:51Speaker 3: but I don't know that the Yankees were that scary.
- 13:53Speaker 3: And the Blue Jays, you know, ran the division the
- 13:56Speaker 3: whole second half and then made it to Game seven
- 13:57Speaker 3: of the World Series, So they deserve a ton of credit.
- 14:01Speaker 3: But are they gonna be that again in twenty twenty six?
- 14:04Speaker 3: I don't really know. So I think the Al East
- 14:07Speaker 3: is not necessarily there for the taking, but the Red
- 14:10Speaker 3: Sox are in prime position to make it awfully interesting,
- 14:15Speaker 3: especially with the right off season moves.
- 14:19Speaker 1: Tim last one for you, and this is more of
- 14:22Speaker 1: a coach in front office. Look at what's been going
- 14:25Speaker 1: on with the ball club. We have given them a
- 14:28Speaker 1: ton of flowers for how they've developed some really great prospects, right,
- 14:33Speaker 1: no secret talking about Anthony, talking about Meyer, etc. How
- 14:38Speaker 1: much of a hit do you think it will be
- 14:40Speaker 1: to the front office to lose someone like Paul Taboni,
- 14:43Speaker 1: who's now going to run the front office for the Nationals.
- 14:46Speaker 1: It sounded like he was basically the slam dunk to
- 14:49Speaker 1: be the guy under Greg Breslow for the long term,
- 14:52Speaker 1: and he chose to lead his own front office. And
- 14:55Speaker 1: if you want to mix this into I'm forgetting the
- 14:57Speaker 1: name on the fly here, but the new pitching coach
- 14:59Speaker 1: for the Mets that came over from the Boston side too,
- 15:01Speaker 1: So it sounds like people on teams and orcs are
- 15:04Speaker 1: starting to pluck away from them. Of course, Heian Bloom's
- 15:06Speaker 1: been gone for the last few years too. They let
- 15:08Speaker 1: him go, but he had a big say in who
- 15:10Speaker 1: they drafted, and that was a big deal for them too.
- 15:14Speaker 3: Losing Paul to Bony is a big deal for the
- 15:16Speaker 3: Red Sox, and it's an even bigger deal when you
- 15:19Speaker 3: zoom out a little bit and look at the other
- 15:22Speaker 3: highly regarded employees they've lost front office wise over the
- 15:26Speaker 3: past really month. Right to Bony was going to be
- 15:29Speaker 3: the GM. He is a guy who went from intern
- 15:32Speaker 3: to assistant GM in less than a decade, which is
- 15:35Speaker 3: very fast in baseball, as you guys know, and was
- 15:39Speaker 3: basically sort of a right hand man, inner circle kind
- 15:42Speaker 3: of guy for Craig Breslow, who apparently keeps sort of
- 15:45Speaker 3: a pretty small inner circle. So he went to the
- 15:48Speaker 3: National she's running the show. He brought with him two
- 15:52Speaker 3: Red Sox employees they really liked. Devin Pearson was director
- 15:56Speaker 3: of amateur Scouting. He's now an assistant GM under tabone.
- 16:00Speaker 3: Andrew Wright was the field coordinator and player development for
- 16:03Speaker 3: the Red Sox. Now he's a special assistant kind of
- 16:06Speaker 3: guy with the Nationals. Justin Willard, who you mentioned, director
- 16:10Speaker 3: of pitching for the Red Sox the last two years.
- 16:12Speaker 3: One of Craig Breslo's first hires around this time two
- 16:16Speaker 3: years ago, was a big part of building that pitching
- 16:19Speaker 3: pipeline that has yielded Peyton, Totley, Connolly Early and some
- 16:22Speaker 3: others who are on the way.
- 16:24Speaker 2: He's gone.
- 16:25Speaker 3: Now he's going to be you know, it's not official yet,
- 16:27Speaker 3: but sounds like the pitching coach for the Mets.
- 16:30Speaker 2: So these are all big losses. It all matters.
- 16:33Speaker 3: They lost their double A hitting coach to the Marlins,
- 16:36Speaker 3: to the major league staff. So it's interesting because, you know,
- 16:40Speaker 3: if all these guys are leaving for promotions by teams
- 16:45Speaker 3: that are you know, they're not exactly model franchises, but
- 16:49Speaker 3: they're franchises that are in theory, on the upswing and
- 16:52Speaker 3: trying to do things a smarter, more advanced and modern way.
- 16:56Speaker 3: Then it's sort of a compliment to the Red Sox
- 16:58Speaker 3: that teams want to hire away their guys but it
- 17:01Speaker 3: nonetheless is a little bit of a brain drain. And
- 17:05Speaker 3: you know, as much as we've talked about them having
- 17:07Speaker 3: their work cut out for them to build a twenty
- 17:09Speaker 3: twenty six roster simultaneously and especially throughout October, they've been
- 17:13Speaker 3: doing plenty of interviews and hiring searches for all of
- 17:16Speaker 3: these roles, which are important roles even if they're out
- 17:20Speaker 3: of the public view.
- 17:22Speaker 1: Good stuff. Yeah, great one to finish with. Tim will
- 17:25Speaker 1: be talking in the off season and crats to you again.
- 17:28Speaker 1: I know it's been several months now, but nice smooth transition.
- 17:31Speaker 1: I'm following you for Boston Red Sox coverage in the
- 17:34Speaker 1: Boston Globe. AJ, was that something good?
- 17:36Speaker 4: You want this so adam Monavinho would be go right
- 17:39Speaker 4: off the field and be a GM and.
- 17:41Speaker 2: Then you have to worry about all this stuff.
- 17:43Speaker 4: I mean, that's why when we talked about that yesterday,
- 17:46Speaker 4: that was I mean, not that he couldn't do it,
