- 0:07I'm your host, Brian Self. We hope this podcast encourages
- 0:10you to know Christ, grow in his word, and show his love to
- 0:14others. Let's dive right in.
- 0:15Welcome back to Tabernacle Talk. Today we are in Isaiah Chapter 9
- 0:19and we are just going to do verses one through 7 today.
- 0:24Isaiah 9 One through 7, We have been walking through God's
- 0:30prophecies to and through Isaiah about what would happen to the
- 0:37northern Kingdom of Israel and the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- 0:41The northern Kingdom of Israel had allied itself with its
- 0:44northern neighbor Syria or Aram to attack the southern Kingdom
- 0:49of Judah. God said that that was not going
- 0:51to succeed and instead God was going to bring the nation of
- 0:56Assyria over from kind of modern day Iran, Iraq area and was
- 1:02going to have them come through like a flood and totally take
- 1:06care of Israel and Syria. The southern Kingdom of Judah
- 1:12was not perfect either though, and they would also experience
- 1:17an exile and then an eventual bringing back to the land.
- 1:23So this is a little bit of what we read in the last portion of
- 1:29Isaiah chapter 8. I'm going to read from verse #19
- 1:36getting into our passage today. That way you can kind of get the
- 1:39the full picture. Verse 19 God says to Isaiah,
- 1:44when they say to you, inquire of the mediums and the Spiritists
- 1:48who chirp and mutter. Shouldn't the people inquire of
- 1:51their God? Should they inquire of the dead
- 1:55on behalf of the living, go to God's instruction and testimony.
- 2:00If they do not speak according to this word, there will be no
- 2:04dawn for them. There is no life outside of the
- 2:07Word of God. Verse 21.
- 2:10They will wander through the land dejected and hungry.
- 2:13When they're famished, they'll become enraged, and looking
- 2:16upward will curse their king and their God.
- 2:18They will look toward the earth and see only distress, darkness
- 2:22and the gloom of affliction, and they will be driven into thick
- 2:25darkness. These people that only consulted
- 2:29the dead or evil spiritual beings instead of looking to the
- 2:36Lord into His word, they will not experience any good life.
- 2:39Verse Chapter 9. Verse one.
- 2:42Nevertheless, the gloom of the distressed land will not be like
- 2:46that of the former times when he humbled the land of Zebulun and
- 2:50the land of Naftali. That's the northern Kingdom of
- 2:54Israel, he says. But in the future, he will bring
- 2:58honor to the way of the sea, to the land east of the Jordan and
- 3:03to Galilee of the nations. So all of this area that Israel
- 3:07was supposed to have from the Mediterranean and kind of over
- 3:13to the Euphrates or so was the land that God had said to
- 3:17Abraham. This is what they'll have In
- 3:20Deuteronomy, God reiterated, this is the portion of land.
- 3:23And in the book of Joshua, we read that they at that point had
- 3:28all of that land. So God says even though there
- 3:31was destruction and exile, I will bring people back and they
- 3:36will enjoy this nation again. Verse #2 Then kind of a poetic
- 3:42section. The people walking in darkness
- 3:45have seen a great light. A light has dawned on those
- 3:49living in the land of darkness. The gospel authors pick up on
- 3:54this thread and they recognize even Jesus going to Galilee.
- 3:59When Jesus goes east of the Jordan, He doesn't that in
- 4:03fulfillment of this that the ultimate light that Israel
- 4:06needed was not just to be back in the land and to have a better
- 4:11socio economic or a better political environment.
- 4:16What they needed was the light of God himself and of the living
- 4:21Word of God. Verse #3 You have enlarged the
- 4:25nation and increased its joy. The people have rejoiced before
- 4:29you as they rejoice at harvest time, and as they rejoice when
- 4:32dividing spoils. For you shattered their
- 4:36oppressive yoke and the rod on their shoulders, the staff of
- 4:41their oppressor, just as you did on the day of Midian.
- 4:43God has set them free from slavery, and He has destroyed
- 4:50the instruments that were used to harm them.
- 4:54Verse #5 For every trampling boot of battle and the bloodied
- 4:58garments of war will be burned as fuel for the fire.
- 5:03For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and
- 5:08the government will be on his shoulders.
- 5:12He will be named wonderful counselor, mighty God, Eternal
- 5:17Father, Prince of Peace. The dominion will be vast and
- 5:21its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of
- 5:25David and over His Kingdom to establish and sustain it with
- 5:29justice and righteousness from now on and forever.
- 5:34The zeal of Yahweh of Heaven's armies will accomplish this, so
- 5:41want to stop there in Chapter 9. This is the crux of this
- 5:47particular portion of Scripture is God's promises to David and
- 5:53to His lineage that he would have someone sitting on his
- 5:58throne forever. As Isaiah remembers the
- 6:02prophecies of old and thinks about when God renews and
- 6:07returns his people to the land, what is going to stop the land
- 6:12from continually doing the God's people get in, they sin, they do
- 6:17bad, they have to be exiled. OK, I'm going to bring them
- 6:20back. Like what would stop that from
- 6:23being a constant cycle? Isaiah says it must be the son
- 6:30of David, the one who will reign forever.
- 6:32Now I'm going to look in verse number.
- 6:35I forget if it's the end of verse 6.
- 6:37Yeah, it is the end of verse 6. We're going to look at a few of
- 6:40these details and kind of look at all right.
- 6:43Why would Isaiah think that the son of David?
- 6:46Because even if you will, the son of David that's currently on
- 6:49the throne in Isaiah's day, Ahaz is not a good king.
- 6:53He is not a godly person. And So what would prompt Isaiah
- 6:59to give these incredible descriptions about this eventual
- 7:04son of David? Let's begin in the first part of
- 7:08verse number six. He says a child will be born for
- 7:11us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on
- 7:16his shoulders. So there's going to come one
- 7:20from the line of David that will rule forever.
- 7:22Therefore, he will be a child that is born.
- 7:26He will be a son because he's the king that reigns on the
- 7:29throne of his father David. And it says, and the government
- 7:33will be on his shoulders. He will be the one that is
- 7:36responsible for Israel. It will no longer be those
- 7:40sinful individuals, those wicked individuals that have been
- 7:43reigning over Judah. Instead, there's going to be a
- 7:47righteous 1. And because, if you will, Isaiah
- 7:51saw over the course of several different reigns and kings that
- 7:57none of them were ultimately good enough.
- 8:00None of them were perfect enough to change God's people or to
- 8:05change the direction of the nation into something good.
- 8:08That Israel could continue to be in the land if they behaved like
- 8:13they were during those reigns. And so there needed to be
- 8:17someone who was more powerful, who was greater than any
- 8:21generation of king that Israel had ever seen.
- 8:24Even as you think back to the reign of King David, that yes,
- 8:28he was wonderful guy, man after God's own heart, skilled
- 8:31warrior, sweet psalmist of Israel, but he was also the
- 8:36adulterer and the murderer. So there needed to be someone
- 8:39from the line of David that was better than David.
- 8:43So who could that be? How in the world could you have?
- 8:49This is such a wonderful truth. And even as I'm thinking through
- 8:54and reading through this, what a joy that I firmly, emphatically
- 9:00believe Isaiah believed that even the name of his son,
- 9:04Emmanuel, God with us, was not limited to God's presence being
- 9:10with Israel. Because God had already promised
- 9:13Judah is going to get exiled, so it must mean that God himself
- 9:20would come. Now I don't think Isaiah knew
- 9:23all of the specifics of that for no other reason, or if for no
- 9:28other reason than that the New Testament authors consistently
- 9:32refer to the incarnation as the mystery that was hidden from
- 9:36ages and from generations. But we read in the last portion
- 9:40of Isaiah Chapter 9 and verse #6 that he, this one, the reigning
- 9:46king, will be named wonderful counselor.
- 9:50Instead of being a wicked counselor.
- 9:52He was wonderful. He would guide them in the way
- 9:55that they should go. He would, if you will, give the
- 9:57good advice, the advice to follow the Lord and His way not
- 10:01to pursue his own ends. So he will be named a wonderful
- 10:06counselor. He would be named the mighty God
- 10:12He is 1 I don't know how much of this Isaiah understood as he was
- 10:17writing, but all of these titles together very clearly seem to
- 10:21communicate the exact same truth that we would read in Genesis 3.
- 10:26About the seed of the woman who would be able to crush the head
- 10:28of the serpent. About the one prophesied in
- 10:32Genesis 12. That would be the seed of
- 10:36Abraham, that in him all the nations of the world would be
- 10:40blessed. He would be the one in Daniel
- 10:43seven, that is the Son of man, the Messiah, the one that would
- 10:48reign over all of creation at the throne of God.
- 10:53And so here this child is in fact mighty God.
- 10:59Scripture also calls him the Eternal Father, and he is the
- 11:04one that in the best case, the best scenario, a father is one
- 11:10that loves, that cares, that provides for, that protects.
- 11:14And there would never be a stop to this Kingdom because of what
- 11:18God had already promised to David, that this one that would
- 11:22come from his lineage would reign forever.
- 11:25That we would read in the end of Genesis that there would come a
- 11:29ruler from the line of Judah who would reign over God's people,
- 11:33Israel, and so this would be an eternal and everlasting Father
- 11:38who would consistently care for them.
- 11:40I want to make one note here real quick.
- 11:42This is not declaring that there is not separate persons of the
- 11:47Father, the Son, and the Spirit here, even as this one that has
- 11:52prophesied to be Jesus is being called eternal Father.
- 11:56This is in relation to Israel, in relation to God's people.
- 12:00This is not in relationship to other persons in the Trinity.
- 12:04So though Jesus is eternal Father in his care and love and
- 12:09providing and protecting for us in Jesus's relation to if you
- 12:14will, God the Father that he Jesus is God the Son the father
- 12:21is God the father. So I just wanted to highlight
- 12:24that real quick. If you have any more questions
- 12:25on that like please ask that would be like a great over a
- 12:29meal or over a phone call via video can be kind of hard to
- 12:33make that more specific then it says so he'll be named wonderful
- 12:36counselor, mighty God, eternal Father, Prince of Peace into
- 12:40this war stricken crazy world that Isaiah is prophesying to.
- 12:47They needed someone who would rule and who would rule with
- 12:51Shalom, with rest, with peace, That was there.
- 12:56Verse #7 The dominion will be vast all over the world and all
- 13:01over creation. Jesus will reign, as the old
- 13:04hymn puts it. Jesus shall reign wherever the
- 13:07sun does successive journeys run.
- 13:09His Kingdom spread from shore to shore, till moons shall wax and
- 13:14wane no more, it says he. Oh, and its prosperity will
- 13:19never end. This coming Kingdom in which
- 13:21Jesus rules and reigns will be a wonderful time.
- 13:25There will be overflowing prosperity for every single
- 13:28person says he will reign on the throne of David and over his
- 13:32Kingdom to establish and sustain it with justice and
- 13:36righteousness. That when Jesus comes, he will
- 13:39do everything right and he will reign here on the throne of
- 13:43David. That ultimately the Kingdom that
- 13:45is to come is the continuation of this Kingdom of the people of
- 13:52God. That from the Old Testament,
- 13:55from the line of Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, all the way
- 13:59down to David. And that is, if you will, the
- 14:02the nation. Jesus has a national identity.
- 14:07It is not American, it is not British, it is not Canadian.
- 14:12His his national identity is that he is Jewish according to
- 14:16the flesh. Now, I do not have time to go
- 14:19into dispensationalism and covenantialism and all of the
- 14:22various ways in which that might work out, but suffice it to say,
- 14:27the goal of Jesus's Kingdom is justice and righteousness.
- 14:33It is right dealing with God and with others, and that where
- 14:38there needs to be people lifted up and helped, that would
- 14:42happen. And when there needs to be
- 14:43people that are punished, that will take place and Jesus will
- 14:47do that forever. And then what's the promise
- 14:50like? Why should anyone believe that
- 14:52God will send this child, This son says the zeal of Yahweh, of
- 14:58heaven's armies will accomplish this.
- 15:00It is God's passion that gave us Jesus.
- 15:04Jesus was not a reluctant gift from the Father.
- 15:08Instead, Jesus delighted to come for the joy that was set before
- 15:13him. And the Father eagerly gave the
- 15:15Son so that we who were formerly enemies of God, that we were
- 15:20alienated from him. We didn't seek him.
- 15:22We could be brought near by the blood of Christ.
- 15:26And what a joy. I hope that even as you know, I
- 15:29talked through some of the various aspects of who Jesus is
- 15:32and the coming Kingdom, that you have surrendered your life to
- 15:36Jesus. If you have never turned the
- 15:38keys of your life over to God to say God.
- 15:41I, I believe in Jesus and who he says that he is.
- 15:46I believe that he died, that he was buried, that he rose again.
- 15:49And I believe that he wants to be in charge of my life, and I
- 15:53will let him be in charge of my life.
- 15:54Now, if you have never surrendered to Jesus, today can
- 15:59be the day that you do so. And he is a very, very good and
- 16:03worthy God. He's the one that loves, that
- 16:05cares, that protects, that provides.
- 16:08And so there is no better, there's no better life than a
- 16:12life lived with this one, this coming king.
- 16:15And I look forward to to the day in which he returns and
- 16:19everything is made right and he establishes his throne with
- 16:23justice and righteousness forever.
- 16:25Thanks for tuning in and I hope that you have a wonderful day.
